- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: The boys are all together again. Kyle Gibson, Lance Lynn,
- 0:15Speaker 1: as we set off on a brand new edition. I
- 0:19Speaker 1: got to tell you this. I'm in a guest room
- 0:23Speaker 1: on a crappy pullout sofa. You, Kyle, have wood paneling
- 0:27Speaker 1: behind you. And Lance has artwork. He's in a throne.
- 0:31Speaker 1: You look like you're the king, Lance.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I think it's clearly a difference.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, all my family's out of the house, so I
- 0:40Speaker 2: am the king right now. So that's why I can
- 0:42Speaker 2: use the office the way it's supposed to be used.
- 0:44Speaker 2: If not, I'm in a corner somewhere in the basement
- 0:47Speaker 2: trying to make sure we don't get interrupted.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Jim, that looks like a great couch, though.
- 0:54Speaker 1: No, that's crappy pull-out for guests. Have you ever had to.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Sleep on that couch? Have you ever had to sleep
- 1:00Speaker 2: on that couch?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yes, one time.
- 1:04Speaker 2: That's a yes.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We have a little housekeeping to take care of before
- 1:10Speaker 1: we get into the show. One of the panel was
- 1:13Speaker 1: late because they were making one egg.
- 1:17Speaker 2: That was you, Kyle.
- 1:18Speaker 1: What the hell is going on?
- 1:19Speaker 2: You were late.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Who makes one egg?
- 1:22Speaker 2: One egg.
- 1:22Speaker 3: All right, so since you're going to ask, you know what?
- 1:26Speaker 3: I'll just throw this right back at you, all right?
- 1:28Speaker 1: So.
- 1:29Speaker 3: My wife likes her eggs cooked where you just fry
- 1:33Speaker 3: them in the pan. You break the yolk so that
- 1:36Speaker 3: it's not, you know, over easy or over medium. And
- 1:39Speaker 3: I do one at a time so that they don't
- 1:40Speaker 3: scramble in the pan. So pushing up against the time window,
- 1:44Speaker 3: I had one of them done. And then I was
- 1:47Speaker 3: dropping the other one in the pan. Just took three
- 1:49Speaker 3: or four minutes. You guys think I'm late because of
- 1:51Speaker 3: one egg. No, like late because I couldn't get into
- 1:55Speaker 3: the system here, you know. I mean, geez, logging into
- 1:59Speaker 3: the internet here.
- 2:02Speaker 2: So you cook two eggs one at a time.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Correct.
- 2:07Speaker 2: In this instance, yes. Two perfectionists. Yeah, you're a perfectionist.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I get it. It makes sense.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 3: But just cook a little brunch for my wife, Jim.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So yeah, go ahead.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I told Jim before you got on, it's because your
- 2:21Speaker 2: slender build is why you eat one egg.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And I think the exact words were, well, he's built
- 2:28Speaker 2: like a pogo stick, so that's why he eats one egg.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I don't know. Listen. There we go. We're ready. Game on.
- 2:36Speaker 1: My father, Richard Hayes, great man, used to tell me,
- 2:40Speaker 1: if you're always early, you're never late.
- 2:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I'm going to leave it at that. Let's talk Cardinals baseball.
- 2:45Speaker 1: An off day today. They lost to the Giants again yesterday, 6-5-10.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Just want to get this out there on the seventh inning.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The Giants committed two errors. They walked two and hit
- 3:00Speaker 1: a batter. And the Cardinals were only able to muster
- 3:03Speaker 1: two runs, two gift runs, without getting a hit. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: in the end of the game, and Lance and I
- 3:09Speaker 1: talked about this in the last episode, Riley O'Brien gave
- 3:12Speaker 1: it up again, took the loss. So I'm going to
- 3:15Speaker 1: revisit this. Kyle, we'll get your take.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Lance, rethink it.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Because after the game, Ali Marmel said, look, it's his
- 3:22Speaker 1: first year. As a closer, Lance touched on this, there's
- 3:26Speaker 1: going to be an adjustment period, but he's not a kid.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He's 31 years old. So my question is, is there
- 3:32Speaker 1: a point as a closer, as a starting pitcher, where
- 3:37Speaker 1: the results are bad and the same thing keeps happening,
- 3:41Speaker 1: where psychologically you're going to damage the psyche? if you
- 3:48Speaker 1: keep doing the same thing and the results aren't different.
- 3:50Speaker 1: That's my question.
- 3:51Speaker 3: No, I don't think so. I think if you were
- 3:53Speaker 3: dealing with a guy that had just been called up, then,
- 3:56Speaker 3: excuse me, then, you know, maybe, but you're dealing with
- 3:59Speaker 3: a guy who, who has a few years under his belt.
- 4:02Speaker 3: He hasn't had any issues all year. He's had a
- 4:05Speaker 3: couple of blow up innings here and there, you know,
- 4:08Speaker 3: a few blown saves, but, For the most part, he's
- 4:11Speaker 3: been really, really good. I don't remember if he's still
- 4:14Speaker 3: leading the NL in saves, but he's a guy that
- 4:17Speaker 3: the Cardinals have leaned on all year long to handle
- 4:19Speaker 3: that ninth inning. So I think it's probably, in my mind,
- 4:23Speaker 3: just a little bit of end of the year, maybe
- 4:28Speaker 3: a little bit less adrenaline here and there.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It is interesting.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Really hot here in st louis um that's not an
- 4:34Speaker 3: excuse but i'm just saying like when you have less
- 4:37Speaker 3: adrenaline less energy you're not quite as fresh that stuff
- 4:40Speaker 3: gets you a little bit more so um you know
- 4:42Speaker 3: what i understand as you see on the screen here
- 4:45Speaker 3: his last 10 he hasn't been good um but you
- 4:48Speaker 3: factor in uh before that i mean he was in
- 4:51Speaker 3: a low three era and leading the nl and safe
- 4:54Speaker 3: so um it's been a bad stretch and For the
- 4:58Speaker 3: most part, unless your name is Mason Miller, Josh Hader,
- 5:01Speaker 3: or Yohan Duran, you go through these periods as a closer.
- 5:05Speaker 1: 37 saves, all-star appearance, tip of the cap to Riley
- 5:08Speaker 1: because most of the work has been really good. But
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you, Lance, with what he's seen,
- 5:14Speaker 1: now look, we're headed to the offseason, right? Could be
- 5:17Speaker 1: a long one if there's a lockout. But, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: the Cardinals understand where they are right now. Play out
- 5:22Speaker 1: the string, see what you have. But do you think
- 5:25Speaker 1: as they gather in the off season, they look at
- 5:27Speaker 1: Riley that he will be penciled into closer the closer spot?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Cause Lance, you.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Pointed out maybe the best way to handle this is
- 5:36Speaker 1: maybe get another like real leverage guy in there and
- 5:40Speaker 1: take some of the pressure off.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Well, I think you look at when he was great
- 5:44Speaker 2: this year, he had Jojo with him too. Right? So
- 5:47Speaker 2: I think all in all, if you're going to be a,
- 5:50Speaker 2: like locked down back in bullpen team, you need multiple
- 5:54Speaker 2: high leverage guys. And he's shown that he can close
- 5:57Speaker 2: and he's shown that he can do it at a
- 5:58Speaker 2: high clip throughout the year. I think all in all,
- 6:02Speaker 2: he might be like a little bit burnt right now
- 6:05Speaker 2: at the end of the year, which comes with your
- 6:07Speaker 2: first year doing it without having any other help since
- 6:11Speaker 2: the trade deadline. All those things kind of come together
- 6:15Speaker 2: at the end of the year right here. So I
- 6:17Speaker 2: think for the Cardinals, for him, It's the best time
- 6:21Speaker 2: to have this happen in a weird way because it's
- 6:25Speaker 2: finishing the season and you have to let him finish
- 6:28Speaker 2: this season because it's been so good. Try to get
- 6:31Speaker 2: him to 40 saves because that's a big number. I
- 6:35Speaker 2: think all in all, he's had a great year. As
- 6:38Speaker 2: a closer, as a reliever, your numbers get a little
- 6:41Speaker 2: crazy ERA wise because of, you know, one or two,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know, really bad games. But he has the numbers.
- 6:48Speaker 2: He has the stuff. You know, could we, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 2: want a little bit more? Yeah, but if you were
- 6:54Speaker 2: to sit here to start the year and say, Riley
- 6:56Speaker 2: O'Brien had 40 saves last year or this season, you're
- 7:01Speaker 2: going to be like, shit, that's awesome. So that's where
- 7:05Speaker 2: we're at. And that's my motto on it. Hopefully his
- 7:07Speaker 2: brain looks at it that way. He's been through so
- 7:10Speaker 2: much already just to get to this point. Mentally, yes,
- 7:14Speaker 2: bad stretches suck and they beat on you. But if
- 7:18Speaker 2: you can get him to 40 saves, And you look
- 7:20Speaker 2: up at the end of the year and he can go, man,
- 7:22Speaker 2: I got 40 saves last year. Mentally, he's going to
- 7:25Speaker 2: be fine next year. There's no other way to say it.
- 7:30Speaker 3: And the other thing is here, we talk about limiting
- 7:32Speaker 3: innings quite a bit, right? But we only talk about
- 7:35Speaker 3: it with starters. Why is it that we never talk
- 7:38Speaker 3: about relievers, right? Riley O'Brien last year, he had in
- 7:42Speaker 3: the big leagues 42 games and 48 innings. If we
- 7:45Speaker 3: just go off percentages, he's now at 62 innings and
- 7:49Speaker 3: 64 games. That's not quite 50% more, but, I mean, 40%,
- 7:53Speaker 3: if I'm going to do quick math here, that's like
- 7:57Speaker 3: taking a starter from 100 innings to 140 innings. I mean,
- 8:01Speaker 3: that probably would be within the realm of reasonable. So,
- 8:04Speaker 3: I mean, he's jumping up in games. He's jumping up
- 8:07Speaker 3: in innings. In the year before, he was at eight games.
- 8:11Speaker 4: All right.
- 8:11Speaker 3: So he's made a couple of big jumps here. And
- 8:13Speaker 3: I think let's keep that into consideration here when we're dissecting,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you know, his seven or eight worst outings. And one
- 8:20Speaker 3: thing that I did not realize probably had a little
- 8:23Speaker 3: bit recency bias. I didn't realize he'd only given.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Up five homers.
- 8:27Speaker 3: And most of these homers have been within the last
- 8:28Speaker 3: two weeks. So he's kept the ball in the ballpark. Yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 3: his walks a little bit high for a closer, you
- 8:33Speaker 3: might say, but he's done a really good job overall.
- 8:36Speaker 3: So definitely a hat tip. Like you said, Jim, he's
- 8:39Speaker 3: had a great year.
- 8:41Speaker 2: And remember this, he's never been a back-end leverage guy either,
- 8:44Speaker 2: like a true closer in the big leagues. With the
- 8:46Speaker 2: 20 innings increase, that even puts more pressure and more
- 8:50Speaker 2: on those innings than you can quantify in anything that
- 8:54Speaker 2: you can do. So I'm proud of him. And I
- 8:56Speaker 2: think he's had a great year. And I don't care
- 8:59Speaker 2: what it looks like at the end. He's had a
- 9:00Speaker 2: great year. As long as he's healthy when he's walking
- 9:02Speaker 2: into spring training next year, they're in a good spot.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Leverage innings are different than regular innings. No question about it.
- 9:10Speaker 2: They make you gray fast.
- 9:12Speaker 1: That's true. That's true. If there was another name for
- 9:16Speaker 1: this show, Cardinal Territory, it might be Libby Territory, because
- 9:19Speaker 1: we all like Libby, right? But it's been a rough one, right?
- 9:22Speaker 1: He's lost eight straight decisions. Hasn't won a game since July.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'm being honest about it. Yesterday, he was really good.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Didn't involve in the decision, but Libby was Libby. A
- 9:34Speaker 1: few walks in there, he said after the game, I
- 9:36Speaker 1: just wasn't falling behind in counts. But For Libby to
- 9:41Speaker 1: have a strong finish, how important is that.
- 9:44Speaker 2: For him, Kyle?
- 9:47Speaker 3: I think it's important, you know, just for his mindset
- 9:50Speaker 3: going into the offseason. You know, he's battled a lot
- 9:52Speaker 3: of unmet expectations and a lot of outside noise talking about,
- 9:57Speaker 3: you know, why is he still in the rotation? Why
- 9:59Speaker 3: are we giving the guy innings? He's not who we
- 10:01Speaker 3: want him to be. He's had to battle a lot
- 10:04Speaker 3: of that. So I think having, you know, whatever, how
- 10:06Speaker 3: many starts he has, or I guess it's just going
- 10:08Speaker 3: to be, you know, one, maybe two, you know, having
- 10:11Speaker 3: a good A couple here at the end would be
- 10:13Speaker 3: really big for him. You know, he might be able
- 10:16Speaker 3: to get to 160 innings here, 162, and that's a
- 10:20Speaker 3: good number as well for a starter. So the wins
- 10:23Speaker 3: and losses, yeah, you know, it's tough. But he's also,
- 10:25Speaker 3: you know, we've talked about it quite a few times.
- 10:27Speaker 3: He's got a lot of starts where he gave up
- 10:29Speaker 3: zero or one runs, one run, and didn't get anything
- 10:33Speaker 3: to show for it. So for his offseason, it'd be
- 10:36Speaker 3: really good to have three in a row and finish strong.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Lance, what about you? Ever have a season that didn't
- 10:42Speaker 1: go the way you wanted, but you finished strong? Or
- 10:44Speaker 1: maybe you had a good one where you had a
- 10:46Speaker 1: rough end of it? Because then you've got to sit
- 10:48Speaker 1: on it for the offseason. Or is that not really
- 10:50Speaker 1: even something you're thinking about?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Well, they can all go with you in a different
- 10:56Speaker 2: way coming offseason. I think for him in general, if
- 11:01Speaker 2: he can finish the year on a high note, that's
- 11:03Speaker 2: huge for any young a starter or a guy that
- 11:07Speaker 2: you're like going into arbitration and, and certain things, there's
- 11:10Speaker 2: a lot of different factors that will be a positive.
- 11:14Speaker 2: If he finishes the year strong, it has, you know,
- 11:16Speaker 2: multiple good starts to finish and has, has, has some
- 11:19Speaker 2: things to hang his hat on this off season. I
- 11:22Speaker 2: think in general, if you look at him as a
- 11:25Speaker 2: whole and he looks at his season as a whole
- 11:27Speaker 2: and can break it down, are you looking at how
- 11:30Speaker 2: can I figure out how to, you know, maybe it
- 11:33Speaker 2: was a third of his starts. Kyle, we got to
- 11:37Speaker 2: figure out what went wrong, right? And then if you
- 11:39Speaker 2: look at the 20 or so starts that went right, okay,
- 11:42Speaker 2: why'd they go right? So there's a lot of positives
- 11:46Speaker 2: that we can take from his season if we really
- 11:48Speaker 2: break it down the way that you should. So moving forward,
- 11:53Speaker 2: I think he's fine. I think there's some fine tuning.
- 11:56Speaker 2: There's some pitch mixing. There's some, you know, game planning,
- 12:00Speaker 2: just overall demeanor that, that can be, you know, changed
- 12:05Speaker 2: a little bit to make those 10 starts go in
- 12:08Speaker 2: a different direction. And it turns into five starts, right?
- 12:11Speaker 2: And then you look up and it's a, it's a four,
- 12:14Speaker 2: one ERA instead of a five, five, six, three. And
- 12:17Speaker 2: when you do that, that's when your, your, your win
- 12:20Speaker 2: losses go to five and 14 to 12 and eight.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And next thing you know, If you just did that
- 12:27Speaker 2: right there, that's five starts. We're talking about five starts
- 12:29Speaker 2: right now. If we just did that, we're talking about
- 12:33Speaker 2: him having a really good year. Or a real productive year.
- 12:38Speaker 2: So I think that everything can be misleading. Your bad
- 12:42Speaker 2: ones can be so bad that it can screw you
- 12:46Speaker 2: in every other category that you're looking at. But if
- 12:49Speaker 2: we break it down to what he's done, he's done
- 12:51Speaker 2: what he's needed to. Now, next year is going to
- 12:54Speaker 2: be the real... what can we learn from this to
- 12:58Speaker 2: make that huge jump next year, a la a Palante
- 13:01Speaker 2: that's happened this year. And that's where he's at. And
- 13:04Speaker 2: I think I would love to see his numbers right
- 13:06Speaker 2: now to Palante's last year, to be honest, because I
- 13:09Speaker 2: think I would be shocked if they're not in the
- 13:11Speaker 2: same ballpark, except Libby gets more, more case per nine,
- 13:15Speaker 2: which means he's got in their mind, more of a
- 13:18Speaker 2: chance to be even more elite and make the, the
- 13:21Speaker 2: jump that they hope that he makes.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting here. It's interesting here. If we look
- 13:28Speaker 3: since the All-Star break, this number surprised me. I think
- 13:33Speaker 3: as a whole, Cardinals fans would say, man, I mean,
- 13:36Speaker 3: Libby's had three good starts this second half. You know,
- 13:38Speaker 3: it's been really tough. He's had four starts where he's
- 13:42Speaker 3: given up five runs or more.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Earned.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And no other start, he gave up more than three.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So four of his 11 starts, he got five runs.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Seven of his 11, it was three or less. And
- 13:54Speaker 3: quite a few of those were one, two, or zero.
- 13:57Speaker 3: So I think it's just been an instance here where
- 14:00Speaker 3: if Libby can figure out how to limit some damage
- 14:04Speaker 3: and how to keep that big inning that's four runs
- 14:07Speaker 3: down to two, that's going to be a big deal
- 14:10Speaker 3: for him. And some of it, I think, could.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Be the walks.
- 14:13Speaker 3: You know, I'd say there's probably a few more walks
- 14:16Speaker 3: that he'd want to have for a guy that pounds
- 14:18Speaker 3: a strike zone and, like he said, gets ahead of guys.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And I know that's something that Dustin and these guys
- 14:23Speaker 3: talk a lot about. So probably start there. And then
- 14:27Speaker 3: I think it comes down to, in those big situations,
- 14:31Speaker 3: how can I figure out how to execute pitches a
- 14:33Speaker 3: little bit better?
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yes, tunneling.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Yes, sequencing.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Very important.
- 14:38Speaker 3: But how can I just execute this pips that's going
- 14:40Speaker 3: to get me out of this inning and keep this
- 14:42Speaker 3: from being four runs and keep it to one or two?
- 14:46Speaker 2: Good point.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Time for a quick break. Time enough to make one egg.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Just one. You're watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.

- 15:56Speaker 1: Welcome back. So you guys are right. If you're talking
- 15:59Speaker 1: about where Libby is this year compared to Palante last year,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and look at the season Palante's putting together. I think
- 16:04Speaker 1: that was your point, but, uh, Kyle, the numbers are
- 16:08Speaker 1: right there, right? They're very similar. Palante had a rough
- 16:11Speaker 1: year last year, turned around this year.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, when we look at innings, ERA, walks, whip,
- 16:18Speaker 3: it's pretty similar. You know, like Lance said, Palante doesn't
- 16:22Speaker 3: have the strikeouts per nine, but his ground ball rate
- 16:26Speaker 3: is insane. So, you know, that's probably why the ERA
- 16:29Speaker 3: stays pretty similar. He's able to erase some of these
- 16:31Speaker 3: walks and he keeps the ball in the yard. I
- 16:34Speaker 3: don't remember what Libby's home runs were, but Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 2: 27 to 21. There you go.
- 16:41Speaker 3: I mean, so, so there's where, you know, the lack
- 16:43Speaker 3: of strikeouts can kind of be evened up pretty crazy.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And I think it's definitely within the realm to think that,
- 16:49Speaker 3: you know, Libby can come back next year and have
- 16:51Speaker 3: a solid year and it'd be looking just like Palante
- 16:54Speaker 3: this year.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Let's talk about Leo. You're welcome.
- 16:57Speaker 2: That was just off the top of my head. That
- 16:59Speaker 2: was just off the top of my head. Thank you.
- 17:00Speaker 2: That's pretty spot on. You're welcome.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Thank you. I, by the way, I love the flowers
- 17:04Speaker 1: behind you and the artwork. You decorated that office beautifully.
- 17:08Speaker 1: My wife's good. Leo Bernal just keeps impressing. Yesterday, ninth inning,
- 17:16Speaker 1: game on the line, two outs, two strikes, singles home,
- 17:19Speaker 1: two runs to tie it. I just think the more
- 17:24Speaker 1: you see this guy, the more impressed you are because
- 17:27Speaker 1: he doesn't look like a young guy getting his first
- 17:30Speaker 1: taste of big league baseball. We've seen guys start fast,
- 17:34Speaker 1: have good offensive numbers, But he's ticking all the boxes defensively,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and he's calm, which I appreciate. So, Kyle, what do
- 17:41Speaker 1: you think the Cardinals have in Leo Bernal?
- 17:46Speaker 3: You know, when the situation happened with the hat going
- 17:53Speaker 3: sideways and Doug Eddings and everything like that, Leo Bernal's
- 18:00Speaker 3: reaction was, I feel like should tell us a lot, right?
- 18:05Speaker 3: He's a rookie as well, very new into his career.
- 18:09Speaker 3: And he's laughing at Doug Eddings. Like, is this really
- 18:13Speaker 3: what's going on right now? I mean, I think he
- 18:15Speaker 3: just has that calm demeanor about him and he's having fun.
- 18:21Speaker 3: And I feel like some catchers would have been like
- 18:23Speaker 3: straight face, like, oh man, the umpires, what's going on?
- 18:26Speaker 3: You know, you would see a little bit in their
- 18:28Speaker 3: eyes of, you know, very caught off guard. I think
- 18:32Speaker 3: Bernal's out there playing the game that he's been playing
- 18:34Speaker 3: his whole life, and he's having fun doing it. And
- 18:37Speaker 3: I think we've got a guy here that has a
- 18:40Speaker 3: chance to be pretty special.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And we talked, he's Yachty endorsed. He's Yachty endorsed.
- 18:47Speaker 2: That's huge. I mean, it really is. And we talked
- 18:50Speaker 2: about Yachty's standing around watching his post-game interviews and everything
- 18:53Speaker 2: that he's going. So I think, like you said, Kyle,
- 18:56Speaker 2: you know, and the good thing is he laughs at clowns.
- 19:00Speaker 2: when they do clown things. So he's got a good
- 19:02Speaker 2: sense of humor. It seems like, so those are always
- 19:05Speaker 2: fun people to play with and stuff like that too.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So when the, when the, when the, when the energy and,
- 19:13Speaker 2: and the production are all there, it's always something exciting
- 19:16Speaker 2: looking forward to. So I'm really looking forward to his
- 19:18Speaker 2: future and what, what he, what he's got to bring
- 19:20Speaker 2: to the table.
- 19:21Speaker 1: So we've talked about the Cardinals, just numerous prospects behind
- 19:28Speaker 1: the plate. I want to do, a segment to appreciate
- 19:32Speaker 1: Pedro Pajas, who's a solid catcher, right? He's never going
- 19:35Speaker 1: to hit 300. He's never going to hit 30 home runs.
- 19:38Speaker 1: But you talk to the Cardinal pitching staff. They love
- 19:41Speaker 1: the work he does behind the plate. They love his preparation.
- 19:45Speaker 1: He has a solid arm. Kyle, can we appreciate Pedro
- 19:49Speaker 1: Pajas on this?
- 19:50Speaker 2: Podcast, please?
- 19:52Speaker 3: I'm glad you brought him up. Pedro is one of
- 19:55Speaker 3: my favorite guys I throw to. He understands the game
- 19:58Speaker 3: plan and he understood it from a young age. And,
- 20:01Speaker 3: you know, I think we could probably take this graphic
- 20:05Speaker 3: right here and turn it into defensive stuff, and I
- 20:09Speaker 3: think we would understand exactly what he brings to this
- 20:11Speaker 3: ball club and why the coaching staff loves having him
- 20:14Speaker 3: back there. I don't think I realized in a few
- 20:19Speaker 3: years ago, whenever they expanded rosters a little bit and
- 20:22Speaker 3: gave 26– I don't know that you would see three
- 20:25Speaker 3: catchers on a roster without that. I kind of thought
- 20:29Speaker 3: it was going to be another position player for infield, outfield,
- 20:33Speaker 3: for base running, for bat off the bench. I would guess,
- 20:38Speaker 3: not sure here, just off the cuff, I wonder how
- 20:40Speaker 3: many teams are carrying three catchers and allowing one guy
- 20:43Speaker 3: to DH a little bit more and having this situation
- 20:46Speaker 3: like the Cardinals have. Because I think it's been helpful
- 20:49Speaker 3: for Pedro, and I think it's been helpful for those
- 20:51Speaker 3: pitching staff.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Kyle, Lance, what do you think of Pedro Pajas, a
- 20:58Speaker 1: guy who doesn't– look, the truth is around Major League Baseball,
- 21:02Speaker 1: baseball is littered with catchers that don't hit their weight.
- 21:06Speaker 1: I mean, to be honest, because a catcher that can
- 21:09Speaker 1: handle pitchers and play solidly defensively is really worth his
- 21:14Speaker 1: weight in gold. Two weight analogies.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Here's the reason why they say, because some of the
- 21:19Speaker 2: guys who cannot hit their weight are the best guys
- 21:22Speaker 2: to throw to. There's really no other way to say it.
- 21:26Speaker 2: And it's such a demanding position that that's why it's
- 21:29Speaker 2: so hard to find someone that can hit and do
- 21:32Speaker 2: everything the way that let's say Yachty did. And Yachty
- 21:36Speaker 2: grew into that when Yachty first came up, you know,
- 21:38Speaker 2: he wasn't a 265 hitter. He figured out how to
- 21:41Speaker 2: do that as time went on and learned and figure
- 21:44Speaker 2: out his way and Pedro has those same qualities of
- 21:48Speaker 2: catch and throw, work with the pitchers, do all those things.
- 21:51Speaker 2: So he has that aspect. As time goes on, you
- 21:55Speaker 2: never know what hitting does. Next year it could be 220.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Then it could be 240. Then it could be, hey,
- 22:02Speaker 2: he's a 250 hitter and he makes the big hit
- 22:05Speaker 2: and does the things he needs to. But he has
- 22:07Speaker 2: those qualities, so that's why I love him. Will he
- 22:09Speaker 2: get those opportunities? You just don't know here moving forward
- 22:12Speaker 2: because they have such great catching depth. But he's so
- 22:15Speaker 2: good behind the plate and so good late in games
- 22:18Speaker 2: when you need to bring him in that he is
- 22:20Speaker 2: such a great guy to have on your roster. And
- 22:23Speaker 2: when you have offensive-minded catchers that want to DH a
- 22:26Speaker 2: little bit more, get the opportunity to DH a little more,
- 22:29Speaker 2: he's huge to have as a part of your team.
- 22:30Speaker 2: So I love him. Kyle knows that. You know that.
- 22:34Speaker 2: He was great to throw to when I had him.
- 22:37Speaker 2: We had a great time. He thought I was absolutely
- 22:41Speaker 2: a joy to catch. So I love that, too. We
- 22:45Speaker 2: had so much fun.
- 22:47Speaker 3: He reminds me of Bobby Wilson. It's, it's a Bobby
- 22:50Speaker 3: Wilson type catcher, big league, Bob. Um, just you get
- 22:56Speaker 3: them behind the plate and he is the best there is.
- 22:59Speaker 3: He understands the game plan. And if he goes out
- 23:02Speaker 3: there and gets his, gets a knock every couple of games,
- 23:05Speaker 3: he's done what he wants to do. If he goes
- 23:07Speaker 3: out and puts up a shutout, he's the happiest guy
- 23:10Speaker 3: on the team. Um, Big League Bobby Wilson. Good comp
- 23:14Speaker 3: right there, I think.
- 23:16Speaker 2: The best thing is when Bobby Wilson's ice in his
- 23:21Speaker 2: fingers after a game, you know it was a good game, baby.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Those were hot today.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Let's be honest. Andrew Kisner, who had three hits yesterday
- 23:34Speaker 1: for the Giants, one of those guys, he came into
- 23:37Speaker 1: the game, and he might be better now with three hits.
- 23:40Speaker 1: He was hitting 160-something. And he bounced around because he's
- 23:44Speaker 1: a solid receiver. And those guys are hard to find.
- 23:47Speaker 1: So let me ask you this, Kyle. You have a
- 23:50Speaker 1: Ouija board there, maybe a crystal ball to look into
- 23:53Speaker 1: the future. But the Cardinals, they have a glut of prospects, right?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Because you got Crooks, right? Raniel Rodriguez is down there. Obviously,
- 24:03Speaker 1: Bernal looks like the front row. You still have Pahez.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Then you have Herrera, who's a catcher, DH hybrid. How
- 24:10Speaker 1: do you think the Cardinals handle all this? Because if
- 24:12Speaker 1: they're not going to find space for all those guys,
- 24:15Speaker 1: which is impossible, you got to deal something.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Probably depends a lot on how they feel about Bernal
- 24:23Speaker 3: catching 130, 140 games back there, especially with his defensive
- 24:30Speaker 3: ability and just how elite it sounds like it is.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I still think having Yvonne catch games is important for
- 24:39Speaker 3: the lineup and how it's structured. I still think, you know,
- 24:43Speaker 3: there's going to be days where Burley needs to get
- 24:45Speaker 3: off his feet and he needs to DH. I see
- 24:49Speaker 3: a real possibility here where Yvonne is doing some first
- 24:54Speaker 3: base and we work on that to have those guys
- 24:57Speaker 3: in the lineup together as much as possible and And
- 25:01Speaker 3: then I think you could end up with a three-way
- 25:05Speaker 3: DH first base catcher spot here with Bernal Herrera and Burley.
- 25:09Speaker 3: And I think that's a really good setup offensively and defensively.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Burley doesn't get the credit at first base he deserves.
- 25:17Speaker 3: And I think Yvonne, with his blocking ability and his
- 25:20Speaker 3: glove skills, I think he can go to first base
- 25:22Speaker 3: and work around that bag and not lose a whole
- 25:25Speaker 3: lot to... for the number of games he would be there.
- 25:28Speaker 3: So that's how I would work with it going forward.
- 25:31Speaker 3: And I love Pedro. Who knows what his future is
- 25:34Speaker 3: with the Cardinals? Obviously, the Cardinals have a lot of
- 25:37Speaker 3: catching depth in their system, and you just can't hold
- 25:39Speaker 3: on to it. So you either use the guys who
- 25:41Speaker 3: are in the minor leagues to get you a player
- 25:44Speaker 3: that's going to make your team better, or you have
- 25:47Speaker 3: to start cycling through some of these guys that you
- 25:49Speaker 3: don't think are going to stick with the big leagues
- 25:51Speaker 3: for you.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Burley's going to win a gold glove at some point.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Lance, what do you think?
- 25:56Speaker 1: The Cardinals might do with their, with their numerous catchers?
- 26:01Speaker 2: I will say catching current currency in the prospect realm
- 26:07Speaker 2: can usually land you something that you need when it's
- 26:09Speaker 2: time to go for it. So when they trade away
- 26:12Speaker 2: some catching currency, then they think it's, they're making their move.
- 26:16Speaker 2: So I think that would be what I'll wait and
- 26:18Speaker 2: see on. And I think that's, well, that will, by
- 26:21Speaker 2: that time we'll know who we, who's our guy, who's our,
- 26:25Speaker 2: or two guys, and then who's our depth piece or
- 26:28Speaker 2: our third catcher. So I think when the time comes
- 26:32Speaker 2: where one of those or two of those guys get
- 26:34Speaker 2: dealt in a package for a big league difference maker,
- 26:39Speaker 2: that's when that will happen. But until then, they're not
- 26:44Speaker 2: going to lose that currency because that currency's got a
- 26:46Speaker 2: good value.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Something similar to the Kybert Ruiz from the Dodgers to
- 26:52Speaker 3: the Nationals and the Scherzer-Trey Turner trade. He was the
- 26:57Speaker 3: main part of that trade if you're the Nationals.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Looking at it. Good point. Catching currency. New way, baby.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I like that. Get you what you need when it's
- 27:06Speaker 2: time to go.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Yep. Controllable young talent is the best currency in Major
- 27:12Speaker 1: League Baseball outside of owning a team. For a rebuild.
- 27:16Speaker 2: For a rebuild, yeah.
- 27:17Speaker 1: But if you're an owner, you have a lot of currency.
- 27:20Speaker 1: We're going to take a break here. Our last break,
- 27:22Speaker 1: you're watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network. I
- 27:25Speaker 1: said that for you, by the way.
- 27:28Speaker 6: Back in the day, Kratzy and I were looking for tickets.
- 27:30Speaker 6: It was so hard to find a seat or anything available.
- 27:34Speaker 6: You'd have to go online, and there was nothing there.
- 27:36Speaker 6: But now, with SeatGeek, they make it so much easier
- 27:39Speaker 6: for you. They have the Green Light Special. What does
- 27:41Speaker 6: that mean? It means when the green light is on,
- 27:43Speaker 6: you can get some of the best seats available.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Go to SeatGeek.
- 27:47Speaker 6: Kratzy understands how.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Easy it is.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I know you used to scalp your tickets, but look,
- 27:51Speaker 4: it's way, way better now because you get to just
- 27:54Speaker 4: go right on SeatGeek and find your postseason tickets. I'm
- 27:57Speaker 4: not even going to fast forward to the postseason. I'm
- 27:59Speaker 4: going to say the run to October because some teams
- 28:03Speaker 4: aren't in yet, so right now is the time to
- 28:05Speaker 4: get it, and those seats are available.
- 28:06Speaker 6: And it's playoff time, the best time for baseball. And,
- 28:09Speaker 6: of course, I have a code for you all. You
- 28:11Speaker 6: can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next set
- 28:15Speaker 6: of MLB tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% off MLB tickets
- 28:18Speaker 6: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 28:22Speaker 6: in the description to download the app and have the
- 28:24Speaker 6: code automatically added to your account so you can use
- 28:27Speaker 6: it later.
- 28:28Speaker 1: So something I didn't get to at the top of
- 28:30Speaker 1: the program because we had egg talk. But I did
- 28:34Speaker 1: want to mention that this podcast not only features former
- 28:39Speaker 1: Major League talent, but also has viewers and subscribers. I
- 28:44Speaker 1: don't know if he subscribes. that are former major league
- 28:48Speaker 1: talent pitcher in this case. But I was surprised during
- 28:52Speaker 1: the 06 reunion, just talking about things with Chris Carpenter.
- 28:57Speaker 1: And I mentioned that I did a podcast with you
- 28:59Speaker 1: two and he said, I watch it. It's really good.
- 29:02Speaker 1: A compliment from Chris Carpenter. And he said, he said,
- 29:07Speaker 1: those guys are really smart. And he said, Lance brings
- 29:12Speaker 1: up some good points. So Lance, I'll start with you.
- 29:15Speaker 1: The fact that, Chris Carpenter, one of the all-timers in
- 29:19Speaker 1: baseball and one of the toughest guys ever, a guy
- 29:22Speaker 1: who taught you, watches your podcast.
- 29:24Speaker 2: How does that make you feel? Well, when he says
- 29:27Speaker 2: I bring up good points, he's doing this to himself.
- 29:35Speaker 2: He might not have meant it that way, but he
- 29:39Speaker 2: is because like you said he was one of my
- 29:40Speaker 2: mentors and one of the people that helped me learn
- 29:43Speaker 2: the business of this game really quick and also understand
- 29:46Speaker 2: what I'm looking at game in and game out when
- 29:49Speaker 2: my failures happen when they didn't and stuff like that
- 29:51Speaker 2: so he was a big part of dealing with a
- 29:55Speaker 2: lot of that stuff early on in my career and
- 29:57Speaker 2: helping me get through those things so Yes, I appreciate it.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I'm glad he is enjoying it. But Chris, if you're watching,
- 30:04Speaker 2: give yourself one of these, brother, because I appreciate it all. And,
- 30:09Speaker 2: you know, you taught me the way and I've just
- 30:12Speaker 2: been able to keep rolling with it.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Does that put pressure on you, Kyle, that Chris Carpenter
- 30:17Speaker 1: is watching us maybe right now as we speak?
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's pretty cool to hear somebody of
- 30:23Speaker 3: his status and his knowledge of the game and all
- 30:26Speaker 3: he accomplished. You know, give us a little bit of
- 30:29Speaker 3: a compliment about what we're saying. Jim, I just, I
- 30:32Speaker 3: don't think you can, you know, you like to degrade
- 30:34Speaker 3: yourself for humor, but you just said this podcast has two,
- 30:39Speaker 3: you know, former major league players on it. You are
- 30:41Speaker 3: a current major league media person. So don't take away
- 30:46Speaker 3: from yourself there. You are actually in the big leagues
- 30:49Speaker 3: and we are not.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that means nothing.
- 30:53Speaker 2: You're like the Roger Clemens, though. You don't even travel anymore.
- 30:55Speaker 2: You're just a home guy. You're like the Roger Clemens
- 30:58Speaker 2: of media.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I'm getting old.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Good for you.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I'm getting too old. But that brings us to our
- 31:04Speaker 1: next topic. And to me, it's like teeing it up
- 31:07Speaker 1: for you guys. But yeah, as a media guy, I
- 31:11Speaker 1: got to be in the clubhouse. Now, there's some weird
- 31:14Speaker 1: things that go on in the clubhouse. I mean, like
- 31:17Speaker 1: there's like a little media horde. They stand together.
- 31:20Speaker 2: I don't.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I always just, you know this, I'll just come and
- 31:23Speaker 1: bullshit with you guys because I like to treat you
- 31:26Speaker 1: as people, right?
- 31:27Speaker 2: Yeah, or you're just way too fucking comfortable. But other
- 31:30Speaker 2: than that, yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's probably why I'm not on the road anymore.
- 31:34Speaker 1: And there's some guys that are like trying to listen
- 31:36Speaker 1: in or whatever. I always consider myself a guest in
- 31:39Speaker 1: the big league clubhouse because it ain't mine. It ain't mine.
- 31:42Speaker 1: But I'm just curious, like other sports have that. Like
- 31:47Speaker 1: in hockey, they have like a separate room where the
- 31:49Speaker 1: players are, and then they'll bring them in one at
- 31:51Speaker 1: a time. Media in the clubhouse. I'll go back to you, Kyle,
- 31:55Speaker 1: on this one, and then Lance can drop the hammer
- 31:58Speaker 1: because I know he's itching to. Media in the clubhouse.
- 32:01Speaker 1: It's your clubhouse. Part of it, I'll side with the
- 32:04Speaker 1: media on this, like players should be in there more.
- 32:07Speaker 1: It's good for the fans to hear from you. You
- 32:09Speaker 1: don't have to be in there all the time, answer
- 32:11Speaker 1: the same questions. But even before a game, once you
- 32:14Speaker 1: all pop by, give an interview, whatever. But how do
- 32:17Speaker 1: you feel about media in the clubhouse? Are they welcome
- 32:20Speaker 1: guests or do you want them out of there?
- 32:23Speaker 3: Free game in that media window, I think is perfectly fine.
- 32:28Speaker 3: I think sometimes that window is a little bit long.
- 32:31Speaker 3: I think in certain markets, you have media members who
- 32:35Speaker 3: are sitting there listening for tone, listening for conversations, trying
- 32:39Speaker 3: to dig up something. I don't really feel like St.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Louis was that way. My main argument and complaint about
- 32:48Speaker 3: media in the locker room was postgame, how long they lingered.
- 32:53Speaker 3: how much it takes away from, you know, the mood
- 32:56Speaker 3: in the clubhouse. I think players after the game, you
- 32:59Speaker 3: have the most adrenaline and most energy from a loss
- 33:02Speaker 3: or a win. And that's where I would really rather see,
- 33:06Speaker 3: have a room to the side. The media have their
- 33:08Speaker 3: list of players they want to talk to so that
- 33:10Speaker 3: they are asking the questions and moving on.
- 33:12Speaker 2: It's late.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Nobody wants to sit there and linger around. the waiting
- 33:15Speaker 3: if somebody's going to ask you a question. And I
- 33:18Speaker 3: think for the most part, media members that are talking
- 33:21Speaker 3: about the game know who they want to talk to anyways.
- 33:23Speaker 3: There's no point in standing there while guys are coming
- 33:26Speaker 3: in and out of the shower and just creating a
- 33:28Speaker 3: bunch of situations that really don't need to be there.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Now, Lance, you welcome this, right? You want more media
- 33:37Speaker 1: and more time in the clubhouse.
- 33:39Speaker 2: There is a time and a place, but the way
- 33:42Speaker 2: I see it is every day that you get and
- 33:45Speaker 2: shower and you get dressed for work, if I just
- 33:47Speaker 2: sat there and watched you the whole time, you would
- 33:50Speaker 2: be weirded out. And every time you got home from work,
- 33:53Speaker 2: you showered and got dressed. And I just watched you
- 33:56Speaker 2: the whole time and never spoke to you, but I
- 33:59Speaker 2: just watched you the whole time. I was in your closet,
- 34:02Speaker 2: in your bedroom, because that's what a clubhouse is. I
- 34:06Speaker 2: would tell you that you would call the fucking police
- 34:09Speaker 2: and tell me to get the fuck out. I would
- 34:11Speaker 2: promise you that. So to answer your question, If you
- 34:15Speaker 2: need to talk to me, I got no problem answering
- 34:17Speaker 2: your questions, but ask and I'll come meet you in
- 34:19Speaker 2: a place where you don't have to be around a
- 34:22Speaker 2: bunch of people in their closets or in their bedroom
- 34:25Speaker 2: because that's what it is.
- 34:28Speaker 3: That was so much better than I thought we were
- 34:30Speaker 3: going to get.
- 34:32Speaker 1: I like it. I did want to mention this real
- 34:35Speaker 1: quick and then we'll wrap it up. But when I
- 34:38Speaker 1: first met Kyle Gibson, he said, I know who you
- 34:41Speaker 1: are because I've seen that thing, that clip of you
- 34:45Speaker 1: and Lance going back and forth about the line drive
- 34:48Speaker 1: off his hat. And then I just, a young player,
- 34:50Speaker 1: I can't remember, one of the guys on the Cardinals
- 34:53Speaker 1: asked me, he said, I just saw you on YouTube
- 34:56Speaker 1: with Lance Lynn talking. He said, was that real? I go, yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 1: So that thing lives on in infamy. I wonder how
- 35:03Speaker 1: many views that has.
- 35:06Speaker 2: We've always had good banners, so that was easy. And
- 35:09Speaker 2: Let's get this after every game, a starter knows where
- 35:11Speaker 2: he's supposed to be and what he's supposed to do
- 35:13Speaker 2: and where we're doing it. I think you'll get more
- 35:16Speaker 2: out of players when they know when and where they're
- 35:18Speaker 2: supposed to be and what they're doing instead of being
- 35:20Speaker 2: bombarded after they just got done drying their back and
- 35:23Speaker 2: putting their underwear on. I promise you that. So that's
- 35:26Speaker 2: why I say there's after games. If you're like, Hey,
- 35:30Speaker 2: there's six guys that they got requested. Boom. You're out
- 35:34Speaker 2: that you get showered and then you just kind of
- 35:36Speaker 2: slowly go in and do your thing. that's what it is.
- 35:38Speaker 2: And the rest of the guys can actually sit there and, uh,
- 35:42Speaker 2: you know, not have to, uh, put their, put their
- 35:45Speaker 2: clothes on, um, with, you know, there's, you know, I
- 35:50Speaker 2: don't even, I don't even want to give the visual
- 35:53Speaker 2: pile knows exactly where I'm going with this. Um, but just, uh, well,
- 35:59Speaker 2: I think I can wet men in towels with people
- 36:03Speaker 2: right up against you because they're interviewing the guy that's
- 36:05Speaker 2: next to you and your thing. It's just not, It's
- 36:08Speaker 2: just not it, man. I don't know how else to
- 36:11Speaker 2: say it. I don't understand how it's still allowed, to
- 36:13Speaker 2: be honest with you.
- 36:15Speaker 3: There is nothing worse than if you throw, if you're
- 36:19Speaker 3: lucky enough to throw seven or eight innings and you
- 36:21Speaker 3: get your training work done and you're barely making it
- 36:23Speaker 3: to the high five line and then you want to
- 36:26Speaker 3: get showered, you want to look presentable for the media
- 36:28Speaker 3: and you're not just, you know, all crazy. There's nothing
- 36:31Speaker 3: worse than coming out of the shower. Understand that you
- 36:34Speaker 3: are the first one the media is talking to. They
- 36:36Speaker 3: will not talk to anybody else for the most part first.
- 36:39Speaker 3: And it's just 15 of them, 15 feet from your
- 36:42Speaker 3: locker and they all have to wait for you to change.
- 36:45Speaker 3: And you're just like, okay, can you guys go outside
- 36:50Speaker 3: for a second?
- 36:50Speaker 2: You know?
- 36:51Speaker 3: I mean, it's just like that. And then sometimes they
- 36:53Speaker 3: push away.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, your PR guy.
- 36:55Speaker 3: You know, Tuno would move them away. Hey, guys, let's
- 36:57Speaker 3: give you a little bit of room.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Oh, thanks.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Appreciate that. Give me another five feet here so I
- 37:01Speaker 3: can get out of my towel and.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Get dressed before I answer your personal questions.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Correct.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Or the best is when you get them in town
- 37:07Speaker 2: and say, hey, you get my back? My goodness. Give
- 37:10Speaker 2: me some room. Oh, goodness.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Well, this was a great episode. I hope everyone enjoyed
- 37:15Speaker 1: it as much as I did. That's going to do
- 37:18Speaker 1: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you
- 37:21Speaker 1: next time. Hopefully that one won't stuck.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Ask him if you've seen the new towel rack.
