- 0:21Speaker 1: I didn't think anything could make Mikey A smile today
- 0:23Speaker 1: because his Yankees were eliminated last night. But the sight
- 0:26Speaker 1: of Jabba Chamberlain has made Mikey A smile. I had
- 0:30Speaker 1: to go to the pen, Jabba. I needed a relief
- 0:33Speaker 1: pitcher because Taylor and Mikey A are unhinged.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They're out of control. They want to fire everyone.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Jabba Chamberlain joins us, legendary New York Yankee and an
- 0:44Speaker 1: old friend of mine and the show. And he won't
- 0:46Speaker 1: stop giving me shit about how bad I am at
- 0:49Speaker 1: getting back to him.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Love you, Jabba.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Anyway, talk these guys off the ledge, if you wouldn't mind,
- 0:54Speaker 1: because they want to fire Cashman and Boone and they're
- 0:57Speaker 1: pissed off at the Yankees, Jabba.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I don't know if there's a ledge that nobody's jumped
- 1:03Speaker 3: off of or has walked the plank per se, but Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 3: I honestly, like, I don't know the right answer. It's
- 1:09Speaker 3: obviously with all that's going on and the lockout looming,
- 1:12Speaker 3: you kind of wonder if they're really going to make
- 1:14Speaker 3: a decision. A lot of stuff this morning that we
- 1:17Speaker 3: read is that they're, you know, they're going to renew
- 1:20Speaker 3: their contracts and so on and so forth. Michael Kay
- 1:23Speaker 3: spoke yesterday on his show talking about, you know, Cash has,
- 1:27Speaker 3: you know, been to the playoffs. You have a chance
- 1:28Speaker 3: to go to the playoffs every year and this, that,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and everything. But to be the longest tenured GM in
- 1:33Speaker 3: all of, all of sports, all major sports, and to
- 1:36Speaker 3: not have won since 09. It's interesting to me and
- 1:40Speaker 3: listening to guys, obviously, that have been around the game
- 1:43Speaker 3: and understanding, like, is it a philosophy thing, as A-Rod
- 1:48Speaker 3: pointed out yesterday? Is it a personnel thing? Is it
- 1:53Speaker 3: the urgency to win? Is it complacency and satisfaction of
- 1:57Speaker 3: just getting there? I mean, four years in a row,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you've gotten beat on your home field. Watching other people
- 2:02Speaker 3: celebrate on your home turf, that's a kick in the,
- 2:05Speaker 3: you know, where, um, and it hurts twice, especially getting
- 2:08Speaker 3: swept at home. And, you know, obviously there's going to
- 2:11Speaker 3: be so many things you can look at. Like obviously
- 2:14Speaker 3: game two was an absolute, three errors and four hitters.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I don't know if I would literally have ever seen
- 2:21Speaker 3: that before. Um, not even in little league and, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: it's just, there's so many fingers that you could point, right.
- 2:27Speaker 3: But really where's the right one to point. I mean,
- 2:30Speaker 3: it's literally, there's been no change in the front office
- 2:33Speaker 3: for anything for 20 years.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Since I played, everybody's in the same spot.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Have they gone to the playoffs? Yeah. A hundred percent.
- 2:41Speaker 3: As judge said last night, it's like, we're the Yankees.
- 2:44Speaker 3: We don't expect to get here or expect to win.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So where, where does that change? Do you fire everybody
- 2:50Speaker 3: or do you figure out where you need to get better?
- 2:53Speaker 3: I mean, the philosophy of, Hey, let's put the ball
- 2:56Speaker 3: in play and make people pay. it's what the Rays
- 2:58Speaker 3: have done and why they've been the best team in
- 3:01Speaker 3: the AL East all year. And, you know, with names,
- 3:03Speaker 3: if you took the names off the Jersey, 95% of
- 3:06Speaker 3: baseball people wouldn't know who the hell half the Rays
- 3:08Speaker 3: are or 90% of them.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Right. Or most of the Yankees. I mean, Right.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Right. And I mean, you see what they tried to do,
- 3:17Speaker 3: switch it up, do this, that, and another thing. And
- 3:20Speaker 3: it's sometimes too little, too late, but I, I, Honestly,
- 3:24Speaker 3: I wish there was a right answer. Do you fire
- 3:27Speaker 3: the guys up top? Do you understand that getting there
- 3:30Speaker 3: is one thing, but you want to win? And especially
- 3:33Speaker 3: being in New York, being magnified by what it is.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And I mean, realistically, you're losing judges prime years, right?
- 3:41Speaker 3: And everybody's going to be like, oh, you should have played,
- 3:43Speaker 3: you should have played. But we saw that's the same
- 3:45Speaker 3: injury all these ACLs in basketball have been. And so
- 3:49Speaker 3: now you go put a 34-year-old judge out there, he
- 3:51Speaker 3: blows an Achilles, you're going to miss a whole nother year.
- 3:54Speaker 3: So you're damned if you do damned, if you don't,
- 3:56Speaker 3: if you bring them back, you lose with them. And
- 3:58Speaker 3: obviously they lost, but then he's trying to go first
- 4:01Speaker 3: to third on a ball in the gap and he
- 4:02Speaker 3: blows an Achilles and you leave them for the year.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Now who's fault's that?
- 4:06Speaker 5: Where are you?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Whose finger are you pointing at that? So there's so
- 4:09Speaker 3: many ways to look at it, but really when it
- 4:10Speaker 3: comes down to it, the Rays were a better team
- 4:12Speaker 3: and the Rays beat them. That's the long and short
- 4:15Speaker 3: of it. As much as the excuses, you look at
- 4:18Speaker 3: the guys that they ran out there. Obviously Rasmussen has
- 4:20Speaker 3: been one of the best pitchers in baseball and Baker
- 4:22Speaker 3: at the back end and, 90% of the guys in between,
- 4:25Speaker 3: you didn't know who the hell they were.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Right. But we don't play this game on paper. And
- 4:31Speaker 3: that's the exact reason.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Or else the Yankees would have won. We also don't
- 4:36Speaker 1: have enough fingers to point them at enough people. Go ahead, Taylor.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I have a feeling Taylor... I mean, we don't. You
- 4:41Speaker 1: guys want to fire everyone. You only have 10 fingers.
- 4:45Speaker 6: One person.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Oh, it's just one person. I want to fire one person.
- 4:47Speaker 2: You know what, Jabba, let me get out.
- 4:49Speaker 6: You're not counting toes, though?
- 4:52Speaker 3: No.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Let me get out of the way. Taylor cares about
- 4:55Speaker 1: this team more than anything, okay? He wants Cashman gone,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I believe. So if he has a finger to point,
- 5:00Speaker 1: it's going to be a Cashman.
- 5:00Speaker 2: But Taylor, go ahead.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Jabba, growing up, you were in my Mount Rushmore of
- 5:04Speaker 4: favorite Yankees growing up. It was probably you, Derek Jeter,
- 5:08Speaker 4: Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera. So for me, this is like
- 5:12Speaker 4: seeing your favorite cousin at a funeral where I wish
- 5:14Speaker 4: we were here meeting under better conditions. My biggest problem
- 5:18Speaker 4: with this Yankee team, Cashman and Boone specifically, they think
- 5:24Speaker 4: they are so much smarter than the fans where every
- 5:26Speaker 4: time we're listening to them talk, there's such hubris coming
- 5:29Speaker 4: from them. And it's like, Oh, we've got an ace
- 5:31Speaker 4: up our sleeve. Here's our ace up the sleeve. It's
- 5:34Speaker 4: Trent Grisham batting lead off. And it's like every, every
- 5:37Speaker 4: fan could have told you from the start, like he
- 5:39Speaker 4: goes over five. No fan is shocked by that.
- 5:43Speaker 3: No. I mean, if you look at it too, like
- 5:46Speaker 3: they look at the analytics, right? Look at his career numbers. Like,
- 5:50Speaker 3: if you're going to go based upon that, like you're
- 5:52Speaker 3: going to get what you're going to get. It's not
- 5:54Speaker 3: like this dude has been in the big leagues for two,
- 5:56Speaker 3: three years. Like there's, there's some at bats under the belt.
- 5:59Speaker 3: There's situations where if you want to look at the numbers,
- 6:02Speaker 3: look at them, that you're going to get what you're
- 6:04Speaker 3: going to get. Did he bet on himself? Did they
- 6:05Speaker 3: give him the qualifying offer? Yes. And, but what, what
- 6:10Speaker 3: did that entail? Like it didn't really entail anything in
- 6:15Speaker 3: what they were going to get out of switching the
- 6:17Speaker 3: lineup up. Right. Like, Really, what did that do? And,
- 6:21Speaker 3: you know, it was just to change things up. And
- 6:24Speaker 3: if you want to be analytical, then be analytical. Then
- 6:26Speaker 3: why the hell is he hitting leadoff? If you're looking
- 6:28Speaker 3: at the numbers and you're looking at league averages compared
- 6:31Speaker 3: to what he's doing and, you know, just the series overall,
- 6:35Speaker 3: you know, and you can point that finger too. But
- 6:38Speaker 3: at the end of the day, in the first two games,
- 6:40Speaker 3: when you have as many errors as you do hits,
- 6:42Speaker 3: you're not going to win any game. I don't give
- 6:43Speaker 3: a shit what you talk about. Like, that's just really
- 6:45Speaker 3: the case. And obviously they showed a little fight and
- 6:48Speaker 3: a little gumption in game three with, you know, getting
- 6:50Speaker 3: down and then fighting back and doing all that. But
- 6:54Speaker 3: like you said, there's, you got 10 fingers. What do
- 6:56Speaker 3: you point at? If you want to do this, then
- 6:58Speaker 3: what are you going to do? Like you have to
- 7:00Speaker 3: combat something. It's like when Booney, like I want Caviera
- 7:03Speaker 3: off the bench because he can do so many things
- 7:05Speaker 3: here and there. Then it's like, Oh, do we start
- 7:07Speaker 3: Volpe at third? Yeah. That's a perfect time to put
- 7:09Speaker 3: him at third in a playoff game. And he's never played.
- 7:11Speaker 7: Like it's, unbelievable, like to thinking that that one thing
- 7:18Speaker 7: is going to make a huge impact in what the
- 7:22Speaker 7: game is going to be.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Did, were you expecting maybe a hit or some, some
- 7:26Speaker 3: good at bats, but I mean, realistically, they weren't even
- 7:28Speaker 3: good at bats.
- 7:30Speaker 8: Jabba Stugatz wants to put a fair share of the
- 7:33Speaker 8: blame on Max Freed. And I look at this series
- 7:36Speaker 8: and I go, they couldn't hit, they couldn't string together
- 7:39Speaker 8: any hits. Their defense was terrible. So I, All the
- 7:43Speaker 8: pitchers were going out there thinking, I need to not
- 7:45Speaker 8: be good. I need to be perfect. Can you talk
- 7:48Speaker 8: about what that pressure is like when you know I
- 7:51Speaker 8: can't miss even a little bit?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Jabba, just to be clear, I wasn't asking him to
- 7:55Speaker 2: be perfect. Just be good. How's that sound? You know?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, good is relative, though. I mean, especially
- 8:02Speaker 3: with the playoffs when it's all hands on deck, no
- 8:04Speaker 3: matter what it is. But I think. it sucks because
- 8:08Speaker 3: you kind of put yourself behind the eight ball because
- 8:10Speaker 3: it's like, okay, I feel like I have to be perfect,
- 8:12Speaker 3: but at the same time, I still have to execute
- 8:15Speaker 3: my game plan and pitch to my abilities and not
- 8:18Speaker 3: try and do too much where sometimes you get in
- 8:20Speaker 3: your own way. And it just sucks because when you
- 8:22Speaker 3: have that feeling of your defense, obviously not playing great,
- 8:26Speaker 3: not getting timely hits, not doing the little things. I mean,
- 8:30Speaker 3: there was a couple of times where you saw You know,
- 8:32Speaker 3: we scored the first run. You got a guy over
- 8:34Speaker 3: a quality at bat that doesn't go in the scorebook.
- 8:36Speaker 3: You get a guy from second over to third with
- 8:38Speaker 3: less than two outs. You score a run. You know,
- 8:40Speaker 3: that's just kind of the way the baseball goes. But
- 8:43Speaker 3: as a pitcher, it's like when you get down 1-0
- 8:46Speaker 3: and it feels like it's 10-0, that sucks.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Because you just know it's like, okay, we're going to
- 8:51Speaker 3: get beat. Garrett in game one, right? It's a changeup.
- 8:55Speaker 3: One pitch. Did Rasmussen pitch great? Did Cole pitch good
- 8:59Speaker 3: enough to win? Yes. Yes. I mean, but when you
- 9:02Speaker 3: get no hit and then, you know, you try to
- 9:05Speaker 3: stretch a double into a triple when you ain't breaking
- 9:07Speaker 3: no speed records, Austin, I love you. You had a
- 9:09Speaker 3: great second half and you know, you had a decent
- 9:13Speaker 3: post season, but come on, man, you kill dirt sometimes
- 9:16Speaker 3: when you run, like let's, let's keep it at runners
- 9:18Speaker 3: in scoring position. You just broke up a no hitter.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Let's not in an unwritten rule. You don't make the
- 9:23Speaker 3: third out at third. Like we, I teach my kids
- 9:27Speaker 3: at like 10, 12 years old, like, Hey, these are
- 9:28Speaker 3: unwritten rules in the game of baseball, but, So there
- 9:31Speaker 3: was just a lot of physical errors, which sometimes I
- 9:35Speaker 3: can accept. But mental errors, it's tough to handle when
- 9:40Speaker 3: you're looking at guys in this realm of professional baseball
- 9:45Speaker 3: at the highest and the best that they are. And
- 9:47Speaker 3: in doing things, you're like, why are you making that throw?
- 9:51Speaker 3: You know the hitter. You have a card of where
- 9:53Speaker 3: you're positioned. You have everything that you need to succeed,
- 9:57Speaker 3: and then you still make these 10-year old bonehead plays
- 10:01Speaker 3: where it just sucks because then as a pitcher now
- 10:04Speaker 3: it's like okay i gotta pick them up and then
- 10:06Speaker 3: you try and do too much and then sometimes you
- 10:09Speaker 3: just can't get out of your own way because you
- 10:11Speaker 3: want to blow up you want to go in and
- 10:12Speaker 3: be like hey pull your head out let's go like
- 10:14Speaker 3: we're better than this but also you still want them
- 10:17Speaker 3: behind you and not wanting to kick you in the teeth.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Job but there seems like there's a just a huge
- 10:22Speaker 4: lack of accountability when it comes to this Yankee team
- 10:25Speaker 4: and then when you don't have the accountability I think
- 10:27Speaker 4: there's more things for the fans to get frustrated with
- 10:29Speaker 4: like The beards, for example, like the fact that we're
- 10:32Speaker 4: even complaining about the fact that Yankees have beards just
- 10:35Speaker 4: kind of shows how far removed we are from Yankee baseball.
- 10:39Speaker 4: My biggest problem, I don't know if you've seen this,
- 10:42Speaker 4: on this season of Survivor, Mike Pinsky, the assistant director
- 10:45Speaker 4: of baseball operations, he's on this season of Survivor, and
- 10:49Speaker 4: he left the Yankees in May because he said it
- 10:51Speaker 4: was his lifelong dream to be on Survivor.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yep.
- 10:54Speaker 4: George Steinbrenner would have never allowed somebody in the front
- 10:56Speaker 4: office to leave mid-season to film Survivor, right?
- 10:59Speaker 6: His job is agreeing.
- 11:02Speaker 5: No.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And I mean, I got the boss late, but it's
- 11:06Speaker 3: still like he was around and his presence was felt.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Like you knew, like if you got a look, you
- 11:12Speaker 3: knew there was something going on or he would show
- 11:14Speaker 3: up in spring training or whatever. I'll never forget. My
- 11:18Speaker 3: dad had came to spring training and of course my
- 11:21Speaker 3: dad always wanted to go see George and come up
- 11:24Speaker 3: and that was you know george obviously getting to the
- 11:26Speaker 3: end and he's still fiery as ever and they were
- 11:29Speaker 3: like hey do you know this is and he goes
- 11:32Speaker 3: what the hell are you talking about that's java's dad
- 11:34Speaker 3: now keep it moving let's go we got a game
- 11:36Speaker 3: and i was like whoa all right and it's you
- 11:40Speaker 3: know you hear these stories all the time and and
- 11:42Speaker 3: that's just who he was and it's it's crazy you
- 11:45Speaker 3: if this situation was going on and i i only
- 11:47Speaker 3: got to know george for a little bit of time
- 11:49Speaker 3: but you know, hearing the stories and, and all of the, Hey,
- 11:53Speaker 3: you're fired. And they just show up the next day
- 11:55Speaker 3: because George would forget and he'd have something else going on.
- 11:58Speaker 3: And some people just kept showing up for years on
- 12:00Speaker 3: years and yeah, they're still there. But it's interesting that
- 12:04Speaker 3: you haven't heard anything from how, and George would, I mean,
- 12:10Speaker 3: Derek was talking about in an interview where it's like,
- 12:13Speaker 3: he would come in, look you up and down and
- 12:14Speaker 3: just walk away. You knew there was going to be something.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Or he'd come in and he'd talk to you, but
- 12:18Speaker 3: he held you accountable, whether good or bad, it didn't matter.
- 12:23Speaker 3: And it's just that I'm not saying that all owners
- 12:28Speaker 3: are that way, but you would feel like there would
- 12:32Speaker 3: be some type of statement. And if I recall, I
- 12:33Speaker 3: don't think he made one last year either right away.
- 12:37Speaker 3: So I don't know if it's just, hey, we got here.
- 12:39Speaker 3: This is kind of our standard now. And this is
- 12:44Speaker 3: how we're going to play it. Or if it's just like, hey,
- 12:47Speaker 3: I don't know what I'm supposed to say, what can
- 12:50Speaker 3: I say type of deal. I think the accountability, obviously,
- 12:54Speaker 3: at the end of the day is the players, but
- 12:57Speaker 3: it's also to put the best product in the best
- 12:59Speaker 3: situation that you can on the field. And that accountability
- 13:03Speaker 3: comes to the front office and the stats guys and
- 13:05Speaker 3: all the other stuff. But when you get to the postseason,
- 13:07Speaker 3: it's on feel. It's letting your coaches, your manager understand like, hey,
- 13:12Speaker 3: you know what? He's got to come out now. He's
- 13:16Speaker 3: at the end. I don't care if it's four and
- 13:17Speaker 3: a third, six and a third, or hey, this dude
- 13:19Speaker 3: has a good matchup. I understand starting Grisham yesterday because
- 13:23Speaker 3: he was six or eight off Nick Martinez, right? So
- 13:25Speaker 3: you're playing the numbers game, but don't hit him lead off.
- 13:29Speaker 3: You got other opportunities. I mean, obviously Lombard has came
- 13:34Speaker 3: in and done some things. He had some errors, but
- 13:37Speaker 3: I think of all, he had some of the best at-bats,
- 13:40Speaker 3: didn't get the result of a Ben Rice and Austin
- 13:42Speaker 3: and those guys, but he had really good at-bats. And
- 13:45Speaker 3: throw him at leadoff. I mean, you're not going to
- 13:47Speaker 3: lose anything. Put Grisham down and switch it up and
- 13:52Speaker 3: maybe spark some things. But yeah, it's just the accountability
- 13:55Speaker 3: factor is you still have to go out and execute
- 13:58Speaker 3: and win, but it starts at the top and then
- 14:02Speaker 3: it's just a domino effect of understanding.
- 14:05Speaker 1: We're all playing the results. I've been doing it for
- 14:07Speaker 1: 20 years. I understand that.
- 14:09Speaker 2: But if you're 6 of 8 off a particular pitcher,
- 14:11Speaker 2: shouldn't you bat him leadoff? I mean, and you're trying
- 14:14Speaker 2: to generate runs?
- 14:17Speaker 3: I mean, yes and no. You're looking at just one
- 14:20Speaker 3: small sample size. Look at his sample size as a
- 14:23Speaker 3: leadoff hitter. And let's take the two. He has more
- 14:26Speaker 3: at-bats as a leadoff hitter than against Nick Martinez. I'm
- 14:29Speaker 3: going to take the one with the bigger sample size.
- 14:31Speaker 5: Fair.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Jabba, when it comes to- Hey, no, you can.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Say I'm right. That's okay.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Well, no, fair is saying you're right. That's what I did. Fair.
- 14:39Speaker 7: Yes.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:39Speaker 6: Hey, you know what?
- 14:40Speaker 3: I'll, I'll, I'll take an inch. I'm not trying to
- 14:42Speaker 3: take a mile.
- 14:42Speaker 2: No, no, no. I thought I made a good point
- 14:44Speaker 2: and I thought you made a better counterpoint. And I said, fair.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And then I got, you know, I was trying to
- 14:48Speaker 2: keep it moving. That's all. I mean, you were right, Jabba.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I mean, I gotta, I gotta get this in. I
- 14:53Speaker 3: can't cause I might be, I might not have any,
- 14:56Speaker 3: this might be all great.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Jabba, I forget if it was Jeter or A-Rod in
- 15:02Speaker 4: the post game, in the post game post show.
- 15:07Speaker 2: The post-game show, Taylor.
- 15:08Speaker 6: The post-game show. They were talking about the.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Volatility that comes with the lineup where every day you're
- 15:14Speaker 4: showing up to the stadium and you don't really have
- 15:17Speaker 4: a good feel of who's playing where, what position, where
- 15:21Speaker 4: you're going to be batting in the lineup. Do you
- 15:23Speaker 4: think there's any truth to that where it's tough for
- 15:25Speaker 4: these players to get into a routine when you have
- 15:29Speaker 4: so much unpredictability?
- 15:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they touched on it there too. And
- 15:33Speaker 3: then Curtis Granderson and J-Roll touched on it as well.
- 15:37Speaker 3: And physically, we can get ready at any time. Physically,
- 15:42Speaker 3: we know what our body needs, especially at this time
- 15:44Speaker 3: of the year. But mentally is the hardest thing. Because
- 15:48Speaker 3: if I'm coming in, I'm like, okay, do I do
- 15:50Speaker 3: this to prepare to come off the bench? Or am
- 15:52Speaker 3: I doing this to prepare to start? Because those are
- 15:55Speaker 3: two different things. And Booney came out and even said
- 15:59Speaker 3: he didn't tell Jazz he wasn't playing. Does that mean
- 16:02Speaker 3: he told Volpe as a younger kid? to mentally prepare, like, Hey,
- 16:07Speaker 3: I'm going to be starting at second. This is going
- 16:09Speaker 3: to go on. I think it's very important. I was
- 16:13Speaker 3: fortunate enough to play with managers that definitely did it
- 16:16Speaker 3: the night before always, or most of the time that
- 16:19Speaker 3: we were able to, you know, conversate with guys and
- 16:21Speaker 3: be like, well, I'm, you know, I'm down. I played
- 16:24Speaker 3: or as, as pitchers, it'd be like, Hey, you've pitched
- 16:26Speaker 3: four out of six, you know, you're down tomorrow. So
- 16:29Speaker 3: you can still prepare physically, but mentally I can kind
- 16:32Speaker 3: of just shut down because it's a long season. And then,
- 16:34Speaker 3: especially when you get to the playoffs, you know, you're just,
- 16:37Speaker 3: you're grinding. And I think it's, it's really important from
- 16:41Speaker 3: the communication factor of mentally being prepared on how I
- 16:45Speaker 3: get prepared to be the best version of myself at
- 16:47Speaker 3: that point. And if you don't give me that and
- 16:48Speaker 3: I'm showing up to the yard, like, well, I'm going
- 16:51Speaker 3: to have lunch and then I'm going to show up
- 16:52Speaker 3: and let's just walk in and see if I'm in
- 16:55Speaker 3: the lineup. I think that's tough. Because we know what
- 16:58Speaker 3: we need to do to physically get ready, but let
- 17:00Speaker 3: me mentally prepare because at this point, I need to
- 17:03Speaker 3: know because every out counts, every, am I two steps
- 17:07Speaker 3: shaded to the right? Am I playing more up the
- 17:09Speaker 3: middle against this guy? Let me go look at some film.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Let me go look at this stuff where essentially if
- 17:13Speaker 3: you're just throwing in and you're like, okay, you're in
- 17:16Speaker 3: group one because you're starting today. And you're like, well, okay, well,
- 17:19Speaker 3: let me scratch my head a little bit, see if
- 17:20Speaker 3: I can get some extra work in to prepare for
- 17:23Speaker 3: this mentally to be in the best position I can
- 17:26Speaker 3: be to help this team win.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Jabba, we've seen baseball move more towards the three-outcome style
- 17:32Speaker 4: of baseball, and nobody has leaned more heavily into that
- 17:36Speaker 4: than the Yankees. And if you look back to your
- 17:38Speaker 4: 2009 World Series team, Eight of the nine starters in
- 17:41Speaker 4: that lineup batted over 270. The Yankees don't have a
- 17:45Speaker 4: player on their roster batting 270. Is this baseball moving away,
- 17:50Speaker 4: or is this the Yankees kind of just digging their
- 17:52Speaker 4: heels in? Like, could you find eight players in a
- 17:54Speaker 4: lineup that could bat 270 in baseball today?
- 17:59Speaker 3: I mean, you only had eight total that hit over 300,
- 18:01Speaker 3: so grab all those guys. But of those guys, look
- 18:06Speaker 3: at them. How many guys are talking about launch angles?
- 18:09Speaker 3: Chandler Simpson didn't hit a homer all year and hit
- 18:11Speaker 3: over 300. So you're looking, Luis Uraz, he's going to
- 18:16Speaker 3: hit 300, but he ain't going to hit you 40 homers.
- 18:19Speaker 3: And that's all that's launch angle. It's all this other stuff. Like,
- 18:23Speaker 3: I mean, you bring up a great point. Everybody's like, oh,
- 18:27Speaker 3: they want to see home runs, launch angles. Is that
- 18:29Speaker 3: winning games? Is that really what winning games? I mean,
- 18:33Speaker 3: you obviously seen the Dodgers. They scored for the first
- 18:36Speaker 3: time yesterday without hitting a home run. And that's crazy.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And it, and it works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't work,
- 18:44Speaker 3: but I think the analytic part, I think there's a
- 18:49Speaker 3: space for it in some capacity, but then also baseball
- 18:52Speaker 3: is baseball. Like it's been baseball for a hundred years plus.
- 18:58Speaker 3: And you have guys that love to hit for average.
- 19:01Speaker 3: That's what they are. Is it sexy? Now you can
- 19:03Speaker 3: make a butt ton of money hitting 200 striking out
- 19:06Speaker 3: 200 times and and hit 40 to 50 homers, and
- 19:10Speaker 3: you're going to get paid. The odds of Chandler Simpson
- 19:14Speaker 3: getting a $ 100 million deal aren't great because they don't
- 19:18Speaker 3: see launch angle. They see him putting the ball in play,
- 19:21Speaker 3: hitting 300. Yes, he stole a bunch of bases. Did
- 19:24Speaker 3: he get thrown out a lot? Yes, but he's forcing
- 19:27Speaker 3: an issue. You have to be perfect to get him out.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Put the balls in play. What happened? Game two, errors
- 19:33Speaker 3: because they forced him to put it in play. You know,
- 19:35Speaker 3: going on contact with the runner on third, Lombard tries
- 19:38Speaker 3: to field before he gets it, boom, error, scores a run.
- 19:41Speaker 3: You know, there's just certain things that part of baseball
- 19:44Speaker 3: still needs to have that, where 270 back in the day,
- 19:48Speaker 3: you're like, oh, you had an okay year. 270 now,
- 19:52Speaker 3: everybody's like, damn, he can hit. And that's just, that's
- 19:57Speaker 3: the way the game has changed.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Melky Cabrera would be Joe DiMaggio in this lineup, huh?
- 20:03Speaker 2: Oh, 100%.
- 20:03Speaker 3: He's hitting leadoff for us.
- 20:20Speaker 1: All right, we have a game for you. It's called
- 20:21Speaker 1: One Table, and I'll get to it in just a second,
- 20:23Speaker 1: all right? But you are a big Nebraska fan, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: Nebraska plays Indiana this weekend, and I am wondering, do
- 20:29Speaker 1: you think there is a job of thing that Nebraska
- 20:32Speaker 1: is going to pull off the upset here?
- 20:33Speaker 2: And I can't believe I'm saying this.
- 20:35Speaker 1: We are living in a world where I'm asking you,
- 20:37Speaker 1: will Nebraska upset Indiana in college football?
- 20:42Speaker 3: Well, now, okay, the conversation, too, before I answer the question,
- 20:45Speaker 3: is Indiana a football school or a basketball school?
- 20:49Speaker 2: We've been asking everyone. You tell us.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, I still like the movie Hoosiers.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Yes, I think it's a basketball school forever. I don't
- 20:58Speaker 1: care how many national championships they win playing football.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I feel you. I wish I'm hopeful. I mean, obviously,
- 21:06Speaker 3: our schedule has been very, conducive to us winning games.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Michigan State was our toughest battle, and they're doggy doo-doo.
- 21:17Speaker 3: But I opened up at 9 1⁄2. It's at 7
- 21:19Speaker 3: 1⁄2 now, so obviously people are laying some money on Nebraska.
- 21:22Speaker 3: It's at home. It's an 11 o'clock game. We've had
- 21:25Speaker 3: a couple good upsets at 11 o'clock games. I think
- 21:31Speaker 3: it's going to be tough. I think we cover, but
- 21:35Speaker 3: I don't think we win.
- 21:36Speaker 5: All right.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Let's get to our game here, One Table. I'll explain
- 21:40Speaker 1: it to you afterwards. It's not that hard.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Give me the imaging.
- 21:45Speaker 5: There's one table left at the hottest spot in town,
- 21:48Speaker 5: and everybody wants it. Who's getting it, and who's getting
- 21:53Speaker 5: left outside? Greatness gets seated. Everyone else waits. This is
- 22:00Speaker 5: One Table.
- 22:01Speaker 1: All right, so it's New York City. It's Jabba's Steakhouse.
- 22:05Speaker 1: We did this with Sheffield yesterday. Jabba Steakhouse. There is
- 22:09Speaker 1: one table, and there is one seat at that table,
- 22:12Speaker 1: and two people are walking in at the same time.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Who is Jabba giving the table to? The seat to? Taylor,
- 22:18Speaker 2: take it away.
- 22:19Speaker 4: So, Jabba, the first one, Robinson Cano walks in. Nick
- 22:25Speaker 4: Swisher walks in. Who gets the table?
- 22:27Speaker 2: Robinson Cano. Wow. Didn't even think about it. Wow. You know. Yes.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That was easy.
- 22:34Speaker 2: That was an easy one. All right, Mikey A., go ahead.
- 22:38Speaker 8: Jorge Posada walks in.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Mariano Rivera walks in. Georgie.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Really? He's a catcher. I get it.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Sandman.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Wait, explain. Oh, you're a catcher. Yes.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and he used to pee on his hands. He's
- 22:52Speaker 3: a gamer.
- 22:52Speaker 2: What? Oh, yeah, he did. All right, Taylor.
- 22:56Speaker 3: And he is one person you do not want to
- 22:59Speaker 3: piss off. I can tell you that right now.
- 23:01Speaker 6: That's the second person to say that.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yes, why? Like, explain, please.
- 23:07Speaker 3: I saw him leave a golf ball-sized knot on Jesse
- 23:11Speaker 3: Carlson's head when he pissed him off. I thought he
- 23:15Speaker 3: was going to– literally, we cleared benches. I come off,
- 23:20Speaker 3: and he is– I mean, he's laying hammered down. And
- 23:23Speaker 3: I'm like– I'm screaming, and then all of a sudden,
- 23:25Speaker 3: somebody just lifts my big ass off, and I'm like,
- 23:28Speaker 3: who is behind me? And it was CeCe, so I
- 23:29Speaker 3: was like, all right, I'm out the way.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Come on.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Taylor, I mean, listen, no one has played the game
- 23:37Speaker 1: better than you. Everyone has to think about it.
- 23:39Speaker 2: They're torn. They're stressed.
- 23:40Speaker 1: They don't want the other person to be upset with them.
- 23:42Speaker 6: You don't care.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Java doesn't give a bleep. Go ahead, Taylor.
- 23:46Speaker 6: CeCe Sabathia walks in.
- 23:49Speaker 3: You don't even have to ask.
- 23:50Speaker 6: What do you mean? Derek Jeter walks in.
- 23:53Speaker 3: That's CeCe.
- 23:54Speaker 2: What? Wow.
- 23:56Speaker 6: You're kicking the captain to the curb?
- 23:58Speaker 2: I mean, and Rivera. I mean, it's.
- 24:03Speaker 3: That one's probably the toughest one. I mean, but it's just,
- 24:07Speaker 3: I mean, see Derek, Derek was great to me, um,
- 24:12Speaker 3: for reasons that I can't talk about, um, on air
- 24:15Speaker 3: off air. It's a great story, but, um, yeah, no, see,
- 24:20Speaker 3: it was just, we didn't even play together. And one
- 24:24Speaker 3: of our clubhouse guys, Skip, he was like, you would
- 24:27Speaker 3: love this kid and whatever. So I met CC like
- 24:29Speaker 3: my rookie year and He was just always generous and great.
- 24:34Speaker 3: And not to say Derek wasn't because he was too.
- 24:37Speaker 3: But it's just it was it was different. I did.
- 24:40Speaker 3: I did get yelled at by Derek because I didn't
- 24:44Speaker 3: invite him to my birthday party one time. But I
- 24:46Speaker 3: was like, you're not going to come out anyways. He goes,
- 24:50Speaker 3: I'm on the DL so I can come out now.
- 24:52Speaker 2: And I was like.
- 24:52Speaker 3: My bad, I'm sorry.
- 24:54Speaker 6: Just bring the rye carrot with you.
- 24:56Speaker 3: It was at my bar and restaurant. I was like,
- 24:59Speaker 3: I guess I am an asshole.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Sorry, my bad. You pissed off the captain.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Oh, God.
- 25:05Speaker 1: How about Jalen? I got one for him. CeCe Sabathia,
- 25:08Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Oh.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I don't know Jalen.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but listen, it's your business. You own the restaurant.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Who do you want sitting in that restaurant? Jalen Brunson
- 25:22Speaker 1: or CeCe?
- 25:24Speaker 3: Right now or?
- 25:26Speaker 2: Right this second.
- 25:28Speaker 8: CeCe would give it up for Jalen, though, right?
- 25:30Speaker 3: Yeah. I would Jalen for sure.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Your hesitation means Jalen Brunson. We get it. We understand.
- 25:35Speaker 3: I'm actually trying to get my guy from Nebraska basketball
- 25:38Speaker 3: with Jalen Brunson's agent.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Really?
- 25:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:43Speaker 2: You need help with that?
- 25:44Speaker 3: You don't help me with nothing anyway.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I couldn't help on that front anyway. You left it there.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I didn't know what to do with it.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you can help me getting on your show, but
- 25:55Speaker 3: I know that's few and far between.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I'm going to have you on more often. You keep
- 25:58Speaker 1: telling stories. I just want Posada stories. You come on
- 26:01Speaker 1: whenever the hell you want, and that Jeter story publicly.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Sato still denies that he flipped me off one time
- 26:07Speaker 3: when I shook him off, and he flipped me off.
- 26:10Speaker 2: You guys have another for him? I got one more.
- 26:13Speaker 2: All right, go ahead.
- 26:13Speaker 8: David Ortiz walks in.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Brian Cashman walks in.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Oh, boy. Wow, wow, wow.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Am I inviting them to dinner or peeing on them?
- 26:21Speaker 2: You got to give one of them the table. Listen,
- 26:24Speaker 2: they're both sitting around. Yeah, Big Papi. Wow. Cashman's not
- 26:27Speaker 2: getting a seat.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Literally, it was my dad's favorite player.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Wow.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Over his own son.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Yes.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Could Cashman walk in? Is there anyone in which you
- 26:38Speaker 2: would choose?
- 26:38Speaker 1: Can we present you with any scenario in which the
- 26:40Speaker 1: answer is Cashman?
- 26:42Speaker 3: We're booked.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 26:44Speaker 3: There's no tables available.
- 26:47Speaker 4: So, Jabba, this next one is not in New York.
- 26:51Speaker 4: This Jabba restaurant is in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Oh, I love it.
- 26:56Speaker 6: Eric Crouch walks in.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 26:58Speaker 6: Tommy Frazier walks in.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Wow. Who gets the table. Wow, wow.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Crouch. Wow.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Really?
- 27:04Speaker 6: Over a two-time national champion.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 27:06Speaker 2: What if I just did?
- 27:07Speaker 3: I did an event with Crouch. He's a great dude.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And he brought the Heisman.
- 27:14Speaker 3: The Heisman has its own carrying case. It's sweet.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yes. Now Mike Rozier walks in.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Mike Rozier, literally, we were staying at the Marriott Maquis
- 27:24Speaker 3: in Times Square, Carter and I, and I met him
- 27:27Speaker 3: and Johnny Rogers billions of times. And we're walking in,
- 27:31Speaker 3: and Mike Rozier, you've got to know Mike Rozier. He's
- 27:33Speaker 3: in a faux mink coat, hat, everything. He is himself.
- 27:38Speaker 3: And so I'm signing autographs or whatever. He comes up
- 27:40Speaker 3: to me and goes, who are you? And I go, sir,
- 27:44Speaker 3: I've met you a bunch of times. My dad works
- 27:45Speaker 3: at the stadium. He's the fat guy in the scooter
- 27:47Speaker 3: in the West Stadium. And I was like, I've met
- 27:51Speaker 3: you plenty of times. I went to Nebraska, blah, blah, blah.
- 27:53Speaker 3: And he goes, do you want my autograph? And I
- 27:55Speaker 3: was like, no, I'm good.
- 27:55Speaker 2: That is fantastic.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I love that you just go with a guy that
- 28:02Speaker 1: you like the most. That means the most to you.
- 28:04Speaker 1: You don't care about it. You're not a star bleeper. Jabba,
- 28:06Speaker 1: we love you, buddy. We have to run. I apologize.
- 28:09Speaker 1: We will, I promise you, do this more often, and
- 28:11Speaker 1: I will call you, I promise you, but it won't
- 28:13Speaker 1: be for another week.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I have a weekend coming up.
- 28:17Speaker 3: If it happens in a week, I'll do somersaults naked.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 28:20Speaker 5: Yes.
- 28:20Speaker 2: If Nebraska wins, I'll call you every day for the
- 28:22Speaker 2: rest of the time. How's that sound? You know what?
- 28:24Speaker 3: I wouldn't be mad at that. I'd probably tell you
- 28:27Speaker 3: to shut up and don't call me anymore.
- 28:30Speaker 2: We love you, buddy. You look great. It's great seeing you,
- 28:32Speaker 2: and thank you for doing this, man. You got it.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Take care, guys.
