- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, yeah, Shano, this was disappointing because Nebraska statistically dominated
- 0:05Speaker 1: this game. You run twice as many plays as the
- 0:08Speaker 1: other team. You shut down their running game. You own
- 0:12Speaker 1: field position for most of the second half. I keep
- 0:16Speaker 1: looking for the key reasons for the loss, and sometimes
- 0:20Speaker 1: you just don't win the game, and that's the case here.
- 0:23Speaker 1: That said, the kicking game is a problem.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, the kick, well, it's not just the kicker. I mean,
- 0:31Speaker 2: the snap was bad, the hold was bad, and the
- 0:33Speaker 2: kick was off-timed. I mean, there was only one field
- 0:37Speaker 2: goal attempt by Nebraska. It was a significant one that
- 0:39Speaker 2: would have put them up 13-3. And, yeah, the same
- 0:43Speaker 2: thing happened against Maryland as well with the snap, the hold,
- 0:47Speaker 2: and the kick. They've got an operation issue overall there.
- 0:50Speaker 2: It's not just Kyle Cunanan. who previously had missed a 52,
- 0:54Speaker 2: a 54, and a 55, which those are long kicks.
- 0:58Speaker 2: This was a 40 with the wind behind him. And
- 1:03Speaker 2: a five-yard penalty backed it up before that play, which was,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think, fairly significant, too, in the big picture of
- 1:11Speaker 2: that kick. You're right. They've got to figure this out.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Why are the snaps coming in hot? Why are the
- 1:17Speaker 2: holds coming down wrong? He's only kicked it seven times
- 1:21Speaker 2: this year, and three of them were really long kicks.
- 1:25Speaker 2: This was the first chip shot of that kind of
- 1:27Speaker 2: caliber he's missed in his career. Also, the extra point
- 1:30Speaker 2: against Maryland, he zoned back on that. They roughed the
- 1:33Speaker 2: snapper on that play, but he missed that extra point
- 1:35Speaker 2: in that game, too, which was the first missed extra
- 1:38Speaker 2: point of his career.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I've got him four for eight, but my numbers
- 1:42Speaker 1: may be off, too. It's easy to say Nebraska's secondary
- 1:47Speaker 1: got burned. Well, yes and no. It got burned on
- 1:51Speaker 1: two plays. But otherwise, I thought Andrew Marshall played pretty well.
- 1:56Speaker 1: He gave up the one long pass play to Charlie Becker.
- 1:59Speaker 1: It was a perfect pass, and Becker's one of the
- 2:01Speaker 1: best athletes in the Big Ten. Otherwise, he was really good.
- 2:04Speaker 1: On the other hand, Victor Evans seemed like a content-rich
- 2:08Speaker 1: environment for Josh Hoover. He gave up some catches, and
- 2:12Speaker 1: the safeties had an issue on the first long Nick
- 2:15Speaker 1: Marsh touchdown pass. What's your evaluation of the defensive backfield
- 2:19Speaker 1: right now?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Indiana had four catches of 35-plus yards. That's the
- 2:23Speaker 2: game in a nutshell. That's how they won the game.
- 2:26Speaker 2: 17 of their 20 points were produced on those four,
- 2:29Speaker 2: you know, three of those four catches. And the big
- 2:33Speaker 2: one was when Nebraska's up 17-6, it was going to
- 2:36Speaker 2: take something drastic to blow this game. What happened on
- 2:39Speaker 2: the first play, a simple kind of RPO play, the
- 2:44Speaker 2: slant route goes inside. and the corner allows that. The
- 2:49Speaker 2: safety's got to be there to just make a routine
- 2:52Speaker 2: tackle for a 10-yard gain, and the safety came up
- 2:55Speaker 2: and missed. So your corner gave the inside play there,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and then the safety, the last man in defense, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 2: either was trying to make a pick or a big
- 3:05Speaker 2: play and just completely whiffed, and that's 75 yards on
- 3:08Speaker 2: the first play at that point. I mean, You can't
- 3:11Speaker 2: have that. I mean, we had, you know, the run
- 3:13Speaker 2: defense has been playing so well all day that Indiana
- 3:16Speaker 2: had to just keep throwing the football to move the ball.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I mean, Nebraska completely shut down those two running backs,
- 3:23Speaker 2: Lee Beebe Jr. and Terrell Richard. And, you know, if
- 3:27Speaker 2: you told me what those numbers were going into the game,
- 3:29Speaker 2: what they were after, I'm like, Nebraska's going to win
- 3:31Speaker 2: this game. I was not expecting major breakdowns where simple
- 3:37Speaker 2: routine plays on the back end were going for 75.
- 3:41Speaker 2: On the second touchdown in the fourth quarter that won
- 3:44Speaker 2: the game for Indiana, Nebraska was in the wrong call.
- 3:47Speaker 2: They were in a true goal line defense call with
- 3:52Speaker 2: tons of extra heavy bodies in on the field. And
- 3:55Speaker 2: Indiana just lined up and ran a regular play. And,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know, there's three wide receivers wide open because Nebraska
- 4:01Speaker 2: played that situation as if they were almost at the
- 4:03Speaker 2: goal line.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's key. When you have a too-high safety look,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and this is a little bit in the weeds, that
- 4:08Speaker 1: is supposed to prevent things that happen. And Nebraska was
- 4:12Speaker 1: in a too-high safety look, at least on the March touchdown,
- 4:15Speaker 1: the first March touchdown, and the Becker toss in the
- 4:18Speaker 1: first half that led to their three-point field goal. But, yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 1: there are issues relative to Nebraska's technical capacity and just
- 4:27Speaker 1: technique in the defensive backfield. We have about another minute.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Big guy, Oregon. It's a dumpster fire. And Dylan Rialto
- 4:36Speaker 1: looked like an NAIA quarterback on Saturday. He was absolutely dreadful.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And they may not even use Dante Moore the rest
- 4:42Speaker 1: of the year. If you're Dante Moore, you're shutting down
- 4:44Speaker 1: college football because your NFL future is in jeopardy if
- 4:47Speaker 1: you have another concussion.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and then to add a matter to insult, we're
- 4:52Speaker 2: playing this game– at 11 o'clock at night. 11 o'clock
- 4:56Speaker 2: or 10 o'clock at night out there in Oregon. So
- 4:59Speaker 2: 10 o'clock Central Time kick, 8 o'clock local. Just, yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 2: this trip is not what we thought it was going
- 5:06Speaker 2: to be. I mean, I think at worst, this would
- 5:08Speaker 2: be a 6.30 NBC game, maybe a 2.30 CBS. Both
- 5:12Speaker 2: teams lost, and it dropped this thing into a– this
- 5:15Speaker 2: window wasn't even on the schedule. They kind of had
- 5:18Speaker 2: to create the window almost to say, hey, you know what?
- 5:21Speaker 2: We can't waste this matchup. We're going to just put
- 5:23Speaker 2: it on as late as possible so it gets an
- 5:25Speaker 2: exclusive window, and we'll see what happens. But just a
- 5:29Speaker 2: tough deal for all fans. I mean, even the Oregon fans.
- 5:31Speaker 2: That's a rough deal, 8 o'clock out there. Rougher deal
- 5:34Speaker 2: for here. Nebraska won't get back next week in this
- 5:37Speaker 2: game until 6, 7 in the morning, probably on Sunday.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That's right. All right, big boy. We've got a big
- 5:42Speaker 1: week because Nebraska needs to win this, and Oregon has
- 5:45Speaker 1: major question marks, so we've got a lot to talk
- 5:47Speaker 1: about throughout the week. That's the Husker Buzz report with
- 5:49Speaker 1: Sean every morning at this time. Remember, the Husker Online
- 5:53Speaker 1: pregame show is Friday night at 6 on 1110 KFAB.
