- 0:00Speaker 1: Back of the Yukon Football Coaches Show here on Learfield,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Mike Cristino, Jim Mora. A little bit later on, we'll
- 0:05Speaker 1: talk to Ben Morowski about offensive line play. Malachi McLain,
- 0:09Speaker 1: who was back in the lineup and did a nice
- 0:12Speaker 1: job against Ball State on the weekend. Well, let's talk
- 0:14Speaker 1: about that first, Coach, you have guys that you know,
- 0:18Speaker 1: get banged up as football, it's a collision sport. They're
- 0:20Speaker 1: missing can't play. Malachi McClain came back with a real burst,
- 0:26Speaker 1: didn't he. I mean number seven there, I think he
- 0:29Speaker 1: was in on nine tackles. I mean that had to
- 0:32Speaker 1: be rewarding in a sense for you as the coach
- 0:35Speaker 1: to see that happening.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I was really happy for Malachi coming back and
- 0:40Speaker 2: then playing as well as he did. Mike, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you and a guy misses. Really he missed three games
- 0:44Speaker 2: because he got hurt the first drive of that first game,
- 0:47Speaker 2: so he missed three games. And to me, it just
- 0:51Speaker 2: it says a lot about Malachi and how important this
- 0:53Speaker 2: is to him and the work that he's put in
- 0:55Speaker 2: to really understand this defense. You know, over the last
- 0:58Speaker 2: year and a half that he's been here. I love
- 1:01Speaker 2: him when he's on the field. I think he's a playmaker.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I think he's tough as hell. I think he's very
- 1:05Speaker 2: well respected. And you know, we've got a lot of
- 1:07Speaker 2: guys that have been nicked up and kind of miss
- 1:10Speaker 2: snaps in a game. We've had to have guys fill in,
- 1:13Speaker 2: but overall our health has been been pretty good, you know.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So yeah, but Malachai, you know, Malachai is a is
- 1:21Speaker 2: a tough son of a gun, you know, and you'll
- 1:25Speaker 2: you'll feel that and talking to him, I mean, this
- 1:26Speaker 2: stuff's really important to him.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Yeah, And also it says to me, I don't know
- 1:31Speaker 1: if you agree with us and now, but the responsibility
- 1:33Speaker 1: that players field at their teammates, right, you get banged up,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you're bruised, you're hurting, you're in pain. You know, obviously
- 1:39Speaker 1: the medical staff is going to tell you if you're
- 1:41Speaker 1: okay to play. But I feel listening to some of
- 1:44Speaker 1: these guys like that they feel a tremendous responsibility to
- 1:47Speaker 1: their teammates to be on the field and help each week.
- 1:50Speaker 3: With what Yukon football has become.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we talk about that word brotherhood and
- 1:56Speaker 2: being responsible to your teammates, and that's That's part of
- 1:59Speaker 2: it right there, you know, is playing for the guy
- 2:02Speaker 2: next to you, not just playing for yourself, and that
- 2:04Speaker 2: responsibility when you are dinged up a little bit to
- 2:07Speaker 2: do all you can to get yourself in a position
- 2:09Speaker 2: where the doctors say, yeah, you're ready to play, get
- 2:11Speaker 2: back out on the field. You know, not everybody takes
- 2:14Speaker 2: it as seriously as those that you know, you really
- 2:18Speaker 2: depend on. Those guys. It's just they're going to do
- 2:20Speaker 2: everything they can to try to get back on the field.
- 2:23Speaker 2: They're looking for reasons to get back on the field,
- 2:25Speaker 2: ways to get back on the field, rather than reasons
- 2:27Speaker 2: to postpone their you know, ability to get back on
- 2:30Speaker 2: the field. But those guys that really really love football,
- 2:33Speaker 2: like Malachi really loves football, they're going to find a
- 2:35Speaker 2: way back to the field, and their teammates respect that
- 2:38Speaker 2: and they respond to it.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yeah, no question about it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Mel Brown was out obviously shoulder surgery. Collar bone broke,
- 2:46Speaker 1: broke the other one of a couple of years ago.
- 2:47Speaker 1: He broke the other side, so he's going to be
- 2:50Speaker 1: out for a while, which puts a lot of pressure
- 2:53Speaker 1: on the running backs. And Cam Edwards I thought really
- 2:56Speaker 1: stepped up in a big way. I mean not only
- 2:58Speaker 1: with his production numbers yards.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But big plays. He seems to come up with runs
- 3:04Speaker 3: when you really need him.
- 3:05Speaker 2: He sure does. He's a tough, humbre man. He's a
- 3:10Speaker 2: tough dude, you know. He it's really important to him
- 3:14Speaker 2: as well, you know, and he demonstrates how much he
- 3:19Speaker 2: cares every friggin day because he gets beat up and
- 3:23Speaker 2: he just keeps going. And I think that as a team,
- 3:27Speaker 2: we feed off of his toughness and his resilience and
- 3:30Speaker 2: his will and he's fun to have on your team.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And you know, he shoulders the responsibility of you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: be in a little bit light now in that room,
- 3:39Speaker 2: although Victor and Oliver and MJ. I think are all
- 3:44Speaker 2: guys that are you know, really qualified to go in
- 3:46Speaker 2: and play well. But you know, you lose a guy
- 3:48Speaker 2: like Mel Brown and it's at o cliche. You know,
- 3:50Speaker 2: someone's got to step in. Well, you know, Cam stepped up.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Other guys have stepped in and stepped up, and we're
- 3:56Speaker 2: going to continue to run the ball. Well.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, A couple of things on the offensive side that
- 4:01Speaker 1: were interesting to me in the game against Ball State,
- 4:04Speaker 1: Joe Finano rolling out quite a bit.
- 4:06Speaker 3: We didn't see a lot of that in the opening
- 4:08Speaker 3: three weeks.
- 4:09Speaker 1: But he was rolling both ways and you know, look
- 4:12Speaker 1: like gonna maybe run, maybe throw that. Is that something
- 4:15Speaker 1: a little bit different that your Gordon Samus is maybe
- 4:18Speaker 1: incorporating into the offense.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Not No, I mean it's always been part of our package.
- 4:24Speaker 2: You know, you have a movement package every week. You know,
- 4:27Speaker 2: sometimes the situation dictates that you call it a little
- 4:30Speaker 2: bit more. I don't know that there was necessarily a
- 4:34Speaker 2: reason for it other and then maybe we were trying
- 4:35Speaker 2: to work the field, get the ball to Skyl or
- 4:37Speaker 2: get the ball to Ramello. That was a way to
- 4:40Speaker 2: do it. Sometimes it's coming off of play action, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 2: which we're maybe trying to misdirection with the defense and
- 4:46Speaker 2: get their eyes messed up. But I mean it's something
- 4:49Speaker 2: that we, you know, we work on, we do consistently.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I think anytime you complete a couple of those, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: people go okay and they like to move the ball
- 4:57Speaker 2: and you know, throwing incomplete and they don't necessarily notice
- 4:59Speaker 2: it you were rolling out. So I mean I would
- 5:02Speaker 2: say it's it's not anything new for us. It's it's
- 5:05Speaker 2: just another piece in the package.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I would think as a defensive player, that'd be
- 5:10Speaker 1: annoying because you've got to worry about you know, the
- 5:12Speaker 1: QB is going to pull it down and get yardage,
- 5:15Speaker 1: is going to throw.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Who do I cover? How do I cover them? How
- 5:18Speaker 3: long do I cover them?
- 5:19Speaker 1: That to me seems like that'd be a positive as
- 5:22Speaker 1: an offensive guy, but a negative is a defensive guy.
- 5:25Speaker 2: It makes it hard on the defense. You know, you
- 5:27Speaker 2: stretch them with wise and you stretch them vertically, and
- 5:31Speaker 2: you know you've got a quarterback attack on the line
- 5:33Speaker 2: of scrimmage with the run throw option, and you've typically
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, kind of spread their defense out a little bit.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Now the quarterback has to make good decisions whether the
- 5:41Speaker 2: run or throw it. Uh, your blockers have to do
- 5:43Speaker 2: a good job in terms of, you know, being able
- 5:45Speaker 2: to get him out on the edge. Uh, it's not
- 5:48Speaker 2: always going to work. People are gonna bring pressure and
- 5:50Speaker 2: things to try to combat that. But if you have
- 5:53Speaker 2: a smart quarterback, which we do, you know you can
- 5:57Speaker 2: do some of those things and and give them a
- 5:59Speaker 2: little time potentially to see things down the field. You know,
- 6:04Speaker 2: with our quarterbacks, we want them to if they decide
- 6:06Speaker 2: to run, we want them to run. But I don't
- 6:08Speaker 2: want them taking a bunch of hits, So get what
- 6:10Speaker 2: you can get in and get down and I think
- 6:12Speaker 2: Joe's done a nice job of that as well.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, Husky's two and two and they go to Buffalo
- 6:17Speaker 1: to play on Saturday. We'll be back to talk about
- 6:19Speaker 1: them and a little bit more about the Huskies and
- 6:22Speaker 1: ball State how they got their second win of the season.
- 6:25Speaker 1: This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Lear Fields.
