- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Divine Disappointments, Facing Pain
- 0:31and Sorrow at Work.
- 0:33And today we have a special guest, Claire
- 0:35Van Der Weel.
- 0:36Thanks so much for being with us, Claire.
- 0:37Yeah, thank you.
- 0:38I've known Claire for a long time.
- 0:40Actually, how long?
- 0:41What year did you get baptized?
- 0:43It was about 11 years ago.
- 0:4511.
- 0:45It's over a decade.
- 0:46Yeah.
- 0:47And Claire may share more about her story
- 0:49of kind of getting involved in church and
- 0:51faith.
- 0:52But I wanted to talk with Claire because
- 0:54she is right now in the middle of
- 0:56a big vocational shift in her life.
- 0:58So you have been the VP of marketing
- 1:01operations at Echo Gravity, which focuses on business
- 1:04to business marketing.
- 1:05But what are you moving on to now?
- 1:08I am sort of going through this big
- 1:11life pivot.
- 1:12We're going to be homeschooling our three kids.
- 1:14And also, we just trained to become a
- 1:16birth doula.
- 1:17So massive life pivot.
- 1:19Yeah, I bet that the club of former
- 1:24business to business marketing execs who are now
- 1:27birth doulas, it's like a small, small club,
- 1:29an elite group of people.
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:32Well, we'll get back to your story in
- 1:33a little bit, but just wanted to start
- 1:35with a question we usually ask guests, which
- 1:36is, since the title of the podcast is
- 1:38finding God at work, how do you find
- 1:40God at work?
- 1:41What's helpful for you just on an everyday
- 1:42work day to welcome God's presence?
- 1:45Yeah, I have to get up for my
- 1:47kids to be able to do that.
- 1:50It doesn't always work.
- 1:51It's not always perfect.
- 1:52But if I can get up before anyone
- 1:53else in the house wakes up, I can
- 1:54sit there, my cup of coffee, my Bible,
- 1:57my journal, and just have that quiet time
- 1:59with God, and just freely imagine him there
- 2:03in the room with me, then it sets
- 2:05the tone for the rest of the day.
- 2:07And I can kind of enter into work
- 2:08with that foundation and kind of go from
- 2:12there.
- 2:13So I usually have a little scripture verse
- 2:15on the background of my computer as well,
- 2:18that I'm always just in the back of
- 2:19my mind.
- 2:20So that's sort of the general.
- 2:23Yeah, yeah.
- 2:24Just something simple to pull you back during
- 2:26the day.
- 2:27That's great.
- 2:27That's great.
- 2:28So thinking about your story, before you got
- 2:31to this moment, you were a graduate of
- 2:34Augustana, right?
- 2:35Did I say that right?
- 2:36Augustana.
- 2:36I mixed up the on, the at.
- 2:38That's great.
- 2:39Augustana.
- 2:40I could start Augustana College.
- 2:42Augustana.
- 2:43And you were an English major, right?
- 2:45English and philosophy.
- 2:46English and philosophy.
- 2:47Okay, so how did you move from that
- 2:49experience into this marketing career?
- 2:51Yeah, well, I graduated in 2009.
- 2:53Oh, great time to graduate.
- 2:55Exactly.
- 2:55There weren't a lot of jobs.
- 2:58But I found just a random little job
- 3:00that was like 10 bucks an hour as
- 3:02an admin.
- 3:03And it happened to be for a staffing
- 3:04firm.
- 3:06And that role very quickly migrated into a
- 3:09marketing role, mostly because I had the writing,
- 3:11and they needed the writing for writing various
- 3:14marketing pieces.
- 3:16So it was fortuitous that it was in
- 3:19staffing, particularly because the place I ended up
- 3:22going and have spent the rest of my
- 3:24career is a marketing agency for staffing companies.
- 3:29So yeah, I've sort of, quote unquote, climbed
- 3:32up the corporate ladder, so to speak, I
- 3:35work for a small company, so it's not
- 3:36a big ladder.
- 3:37But yeah, I've just sort of learned and
- 3:40grown over the last 16 years of doing
- 3:42that.
- 3:43For sure.
- 3:44So kind of going through that experience, trying
- 3:46to get a job during the recession, you've
- 3:48got humanities degrees, you're a writer.
- 3:51How did you experience the journey of kind
- 3:54of becoming a more corporate worker and leaning
- 3:56into that as you got started in your
- 3:58career?
- 3:59Yeah, it was a lot of self education,
- 4:00which honestly, I think a lot of marketers
- 4:02are self learned.
- 4:03I mean, of course, you get a degree
- 4:05in it.
- 4:06But there's a lot of resources out there.
- 4:07There's a lot of associations, a lot of
- 4:09articles, books, all that kind of thing.
- 4:13And I came onto the scene right when
- 4:14there was a lot of new things going
- 4:16on anyway, like social media for the businesses
- 4:18was still a new thing.
- 4:21And so I could sort of learn along
- 4:23with everyone else in the industry.
- 4:27And yeah, I've had a lot of really
- 4:28great mentors who have helped me.
- 4:30I work in an agency setting for the
- 4:33last 11 years now.
- 4:35So every client that I work with is
- 4:37a little bit different.
- 4:38And I can try out new things.
- 4:39And it's been trial and error and self
- 4:43learning.
- 4:44But that's generally how I've grown over the
- 4:46years.
- 4:47Yeah, yeah.
- 4:48Now, since we know each other personally, I
- 4:51know that you had a pretty significant kind
- 4:53of coming to faith experience as an adult,
- 4:55I was wondering, what point in your career
- 4:58did that happen?
- 4:59And did that shape your experience of work
- 5:01in any way?
- 5:02How did your faith end up connecting with
- 5:04your career journey?
- 5:05Yeah, that's a great question.
- 5:07I came to faith about five years after
- 5:13I graduated college.
- 5:15My first husband passed away three years into
- 5:19our marriage, and we had an 18 month
- 5:21old son.
- 5:22And at that time, I was not a
- 5:24Christian.
- 5:24But after his death, I was very much
- 5:27seeking the meaning of life, all the big
- 5:30questions, as I was processing all that really
- 5:34raw grief.
- 5:36And ended up at a church where it
- 5:41just felt like home.
- 5:42I had asked a lot of questions and
- 5:43came to Christianity from a very intellectual and
- 5:47a miracle standpoint, but found a church that
- 5:50not only could answer those questions, but could
- 5:52also sort of bring it home for me
- 5:53that it was more than just that, it
- 5:56was about that relationship with God and the
- 5:59faith and the mystery and the love and
- 6:00all the subjective things that you cannot put
- 6:03an empirical equation behind.
- 6:06So yeah, my faith has grown ever since
- 6:08then.
- 6:09From a work perspective, though, I think that
- 6:11has been a very slow process.
- 6:14And I think God has slowly led me
- 6:16through that at a pace that I could
- 6:17handle.
- 6:18And it really wasn't until the last three
- 6:22or four years, where also I've worked closely
- 6:25with a spiritual director, just like, I don't
- 6:29know what it looks like to find God
- 6:30at work.
- 6:31I don't.
- 6:32Even if I am sitting down with a
- 6:34Bible before my kids wake up in the
- 6:36morning, I enter work and often feel very
- 6:39spiritually empty.
- 6:41So working with someone else who can help
- 6:45with that objective outside perspective really helped.
- 6:49And my faith has certainly grown stronger through
- 6:51that time, but has also opened up a
- 6:53lot of new doors and windows.
- 6:56So yeah, so as you were meeting with
- 6:58your spiritual director and shout out to spiritual
- 7:00directors and spiritual director in general, I'm encouraging
- 7:03people to embrace that tradition more.
- 7:07When you were having those conversations, what kind
- 7:10of questions were you asking?
- 7:11What kind of things would you say to
- 7:12your director about how work felt and what
- 7:16you were facing?
- 7:20Yeah, I'm trying to remember now.
- 7:21It's been a while.
- 7:24A lot of it was venting, if I'm
- 7:27being honest.
- 7:27As much as I love the people I
- 7:30work with and the work that I'm doing
- 7:32is engaging and all of that.
- 7:34And it's a flexible job, like all the
- 7:36perks of a really great job.
- 7:38But I just feel spiritually empty.
- 7:40It just doesn't feel as fulfilling as I
- 7:42want it to.
- 7:43And why does God have me here?
- 7:45Is it just because it helps me pay
- 7:47the bills?
- 7:48Is that the only redeeming factor here?
- 7:49And I can be generous with that money.
- 7:51And for a long time, that's really what
- 7:53I settled into.
- 7:55And I feel like I tried all the
- 7:58things to help me feel more spiritually grounded
- 8:01at work with the help of my spiritual
- 8:02director, whether it was lighting a candle, sort
- 8:05of inviting the Holy Spirit into my office
- 8:07space, more scripture verses, just little trinkets that
- 8:12would be that sort of grounding, tangible thing.
- 8:17But over time, it was kind of clear
- 8:21that God was calling me into something else.
- 8:23Yeah, so it sounds like it wasn't just
- 8:26a move away from this sense of emptiness,
- 8:29but also a move to some things that
- 8:31God was kind of putting on your heart.
- 8:33So how did you begin to feel that
- 8:35nudge or that call toward those things?
- 8:37Yeah, that was definitely something, an interesting experience,
- 8:40because for probably several years, three or four
- 8:43years, I was like, man, I just, if
- 8:45I could do something else, I would.
- 8:46But it was never the specific job that
- 8:49was the problem.
- 8:49As I mentioned, it was a great job.
- 8:52But I just didn't love it.
- 8:53I came home at the end of day
- 8:55feeling like, oh, I just want to be
- 8:57doing something else.
- 8:58But I don't know what that is.
- 9:00And it's not another job.
- 9:01What would I do?
- 9:01I'm stuck in this.
- 9:02It was a very like, downward spiral thought
- 9:05process.
- 9:06I just had to like, leave behind me
- 9:08at the end of the day to just
- 9:10be functioning.
- 9:13But as my middle child, he was in
- 9:16first grade during the last year.
- 9:20And he was thriving, but he wasn't thriving
- 9:25in a way that I felt would be
- 9:28sustainable for him just in public school.
- 9:31And I love our schools.
- 9:33Our schools have been great.
- 9:33My oldest son has been doing amazing.
- 9:36But with my middle child, I kind of
- 9:40encountered this question of, is this the right
- 9:43fit?
- 9:53And even start questioning this stuff, right?
- 9:55We needed my job financially.
- 9:58I started out at the beginning of last
- 10:00year saying, if we did something different, if
- 10:02we thought about the question of potentially homeschooling
- 10:05our kids, which felt to me as the
- 10:07only other option, it would take an act
- 10:10of God financially to be able to do
- 10:12that.
- 10:14It felt impossible.
- 10:17However, it still felt like this question that
- 10:19I was called to try and battle with
- 10:22a little bit.
- 10:24So I kept asking these questions, kept praying
- 10:28over it, kept talking to my spiritual director
- 10:31about it.
- 10:32My husband and I prayed over it together
- 10:34and journaled over it constantly.
- 10:38We got to a point in the year
- 10:40where it was like, well, maybe we should
- 10:42do our finances and see if it would
- 10:44be possible to do this.
- 10:48Because, you know, I mean, we have a
- 10:49pretty good handle on it.
- 10:50We budget every month, but we've never sat
- 10:53down and said, what would this look like
- 10:55if I totally left my job right now?
- 10:58This would be a really big deal.
- 10:59Is it even possible?
- 11:01And so we downloaded all the data.
- 11:04We fixed up this big spreadsheet and said
- 11:07like, oh, it is possible.
- 11:11It's not comfortable, but it's possible.
- 11:15And yeah, so it was very much this
- 11:20transition from, okay, not only am I quote
- 11:24unquote running away from something, but I'm running
- 11:26towards something else.
- 11:27And that felt like this massive shift for
- 11:29me.
- 11:29Like I'm not just looking for another job.
- 11:31That's not what this is about.
- 11:32As unhappy as I am, I would stay
- 11:34here if that was where I was called
- 11:36to be.
- 11:36But suddenly I felt this calling in its
- 11:38other direction and asking these questions and wrestling
- 11:42with the different tangible factors of it, the
- 11:46finances, the logistics, all of it.
- 11:49And yeah.
- 11:51Yeah.
- 11:52Yeah.
- 11:52I love how you said when you were
- 11:54doing that financial analysis, you realized, oh, it's
- 11:57not comfortable, but it's possible.
- 11:59Yeah.
- 12:00And that sense of calling is rarely comfortable.
- 12:03Exactly.
- 12:03God doesn't usually call us to do the
- 12:04most comfortable things.
- 12:06And so there's some risk in saying yes
- 12:08to something that you feel like is increasingly
- 12:10clear that God's in it, that he's doing
- 12:13it.
- 12:14And yet it still is that kind of
- 12:16taking the leap to say yes to it.
- 12:19How did you reach that point you and
- 12:21your husband, Mike, together of taking a leap?
- 12:26It was scary.
- 12:27There was a couple other things that were
- 12:28happening at the same time, though, as we
- 12:31were getting closer to maybe being like, yes,
- 12:33we should make this decision.
- 12:34But when should it be?
- 12:36Is it like next school year?
- 12:38Is it a year and a half from
- 12:40now?
- 12:40What does that look like?
- 12:42I found out that the doula I had
- 12:44had for my youngest two children was beginning
- 12:48to train doulas.
- 12:50In the back of my head, ever since
- 12:52my 13 year old was born, I had
- 12:54thought like in another life, I would be
- 12:56a midwife or a doula, but then I
- 12:58left it there.
- 12:59It's like, okay, that is not my calling.
- 13:01That is not my life.
- 13:01This is my life.
- 13:02I have an office job.
- 13:04And yeah, we got through this process.
- 13:07And to suddenly hear that she was doing
- 13:09this, it sort of came together like, oh
- 13:11my goodness, this timing is actually, it's so
- 13:14gone, right?
- 13:17So there was like, okay, like it wouldn't
- 13:20replace my income by any means.
- 13:21And that would not be the point of
- 13:22that job, but it would be a little
- 13:24extra.
- 13:25And also it would fulfill this whisper of
- 13:29a calling that I've had for years.
- 13:32So that was very cool to kind of
- 13:35go through that.
- 13:37And then besides that, there were just little
- 13:39things.
- 13:41We heard a sermon when we were traveling
- 13:43for spring break this year.
- 13:46And the sermon was deciding between the hard
- 13:49thing and the comfortable thing.
- 13:51And I left that church and we were
- 13:53visiting a church plant in Colorado and we
- 13:55left that church saying, oh, okay.
- 13:58That was for us.
- 14:00Yes, exactly.
- 14:01Yes.
- 14:02So just little things like that just kept
- 14:04coming up, meeting people who had similar stories
- 14:07or just hearing the right words or reading
- 14:11the right Bible verse.
- 14:12It just all sort of came together and
- 14:15making that final decision.
- 14:17Yeah.
- 14:17Praise the Lord.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:19So for our listeners in this series, we're
- 14:21talking about lots of different kinds of disappointments.
- 14:24Sometimes somebody feels stuck in a job, maybe
- 14:26like you, where it's like a golden handcuff
- 14:27situation where they do have privilege, they're doing
- 14:31okay financially, but there's just that feeling of
- 14:33emptiness.
- 14:34Other folks might be facing something much more
- 14:37pragmatically dramatic, like injustice in their workplace, discrimination,
- 14:40not being able to make ends meet.
- 14:43Either way, though, you can feel that sense
- 14:44of what do I do next?
- 14:46Like, how do I move forward?
- 14:48So what would you say to folks in
- 14:49either situation?
- 14:51How do you discern what God is really
- 14:52asking of you versus all the other things
- 14:55that you might look at as options?
- 14:56Oh, man.
- 14:58That's a really hard question.
- 15:02I would say prayer first and foremost, and
- 15:06be honest about it.
- 15:07Because like for me, I was like, oh,
- 15:08yeah, I'm praying about it.
- 15:09And I'm like, but am I really?
- 15:10Am I actually sitting down and talking to
- 15:12God and saying, this is what I'm happy
- 15:13about?
- 15:16What do you want from me?
- 15:17And what do I want?
- 15:18And does that align with what God wants?
- 15:23Otherwise tapping into people in your faith community,
- 15:29whether it's a spiritual director is so valuable,
- 15:33or some kind of small group or just
- 15:35mentors or spiritual mothers and fathers.
- 15:39Just constant prayer with people who can sort
- 15:42of be that outside perspective to help.
- 15:46For me, and I don't know how much
- 15:48this may help other people.
- 15:49But again, it was not, it had to
- 15:52be more than running away from something.
- 15:55When it suddenly pivoted to like, oh, there's
- 15:57an answer here that I can also put
- 16:00this in perspective and run towards something else.
- 16:03That's when it started to become much clearer.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:09One thing we've talked about with different guests,
- 16:12and just in my own episodes as well,
- 16:14is suffering is not abnormal in the Christian
- 16:17life.
- 16:18And sometimes our workplaces where that suffering shows
- 16:20up.
- 16:20So just because something's hard doesn't mean, oh,
- 16:23there's a problem here, I should do something
- 16:25else.
- 16:25And yet we can have the flip side
- 16:27of, oh, so the answer, the faithful answer
- 16:29is always just to grin and bear it
- 16:30just to grit it out.
- 16:31That's not actually wisdom either.
- 16:33You need to have that discernment of what
- 16:35is God really saying?
- 16:36Is he saying, stay here faithfully, I'll be
- 16:38with you in suffering.
- 16:40Or is he saying, I have something different
- 16:41for you.
- 16:42And I love how you emphasize the community
- 16:44piece that we can't actually come to that
- 16:46answer simply by ourselves.
- 16:48We need the help of the church of
- 16:49the Christian community to help us be sure
- 16:51we've discerned what God is saying and then
- 16:53to take the next step.
- 16:54So yeah, that's really beautiful.
- 16:57Well, I wish we had more time to
- 16:58keep talking about everything, but thank you for
- 17:00sharing just a little bit of your story.
- 17:02And Clay, would you be willing to just
- 17:03pray for anybody who may be questioning these
- 17:05things for themselves to close our episodes?
- 17:08Absolutely.
- 17:08Yes.
- 17:09Lord Jesus, I lift up anyone listening to
- 17:13this today who is struggling, who does feel
- 17:16spiritually unfulfilled or is facing just really challenging
- 17:20circumstances in their workplace.
- 17:23I pray that you will just surround them
- 17:24with community of people to help them discern
- 17:27the next steps, to help them hear God's
- 17:31word for them and just to surround them
- 17:33with your love and support and sense of
- 17:36peace as they go into their workday each
- 17:38day.
- 17:39In your name, Lord.
- 17:41Amen.
- 17:45Thanks for listening.
