- 0:04Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome.
- 0:06It's time now for car talk right here on K one. The one
- 0:09you trust, Brad Dunelson Studio, and Brad has always seems like you bring
- 0:13friends. Well, I like to bring friends. We love to have nobody
- 0:16wants to just talk about cars. Yeah, friends, cars are like a
- 0:21pathway to life. Right, it's venture and you know, work, play
- 0:26whatever it is, or to the Frank Phillips Home in this Yeah, that's
- 0:29right, come down givin now. We do have a guest here this morning.
- 0:35We've got uh, Michelle Sweeney from the historic Frank Phillips Home here in
- 0:40Bartlesville. Hello, Michelle, Hi, I'm glad to be here. It's
- 0:43great to have you. It's springtime at the at the home. And I
- 0:48know you guys are kind of famous for the best Christmas party in town.
- 0:52That's right. That's a great Sunday in December. All right, it's a
- 0:56great time. The holiday is correct, that's right. But this I mean
- 1:00year you're trying to get a get in a music on the lawn. Yes,
- 1:04and we like to have one in May. But you know May's weather
- 1:08is always iffy, so it was illy yeah, it was scheduled for tonight,
- 1:15but with the probability of rain and although it probably will clear off this
- 1:19afternoon, we have gone ahead and rescheduled it for next Thursday, Okay at
- 1:25six thirty. You know, we want people to bring their lawn shairs,
- 1:27a picnic, launch a blanket whenever. Wade Daniels is going to provide the
- 1:33music. He's got his keyboard, he'll sing some, he said, he's
- 1:37got some surprises for us. So looking forward to a good time. We
- 1:42just hope the weather holds that well, what cross our fingers. It's always
- 1:47a hit and miss this time of year in Olklahoma. We've had luckily.
- 1:52Last night storms weren't too kind of strophic around here, but I saw some
- 1:57out west because we did not put all the cars inside this Oh I mean,
- 2:02you didn't sleep last night. When I was gone to bed, I
- 2:07was thinking about it, listening to the thunder, and it was definitely it
- 2:12is speciful this time of year. I know it is for a lot of
- 2:15you guys too, but we're grass for everybody who's been a oh yeah by
- 2:17the storms. It's one of those awful things, but I know the weather
- 2:23we'll rebound we've got warm yeah, and coming up, we've got baseball tryouts
- 2:28tonight. I think are still happening as far as I know, so the
- 2:30dungeons Ford Indians will be trying out again our eighty fourth season. We're really
- 2:36about that. We haven't been around as long as the home, but now
- 2:42we're working on it. Yeah. Well, that's a great thing you do.
- 2:45It was the home built home was actually the original part of the home
- 2:47was built. Started in nineteen oh eight. I finished in nineteen oh nine,
- 2:52so it is well over one hundred years old now. The Phillips is
- 2:55when they lived there, did a couple of major renovations, one in ninety
- 3:00teen seventeen, but the most important one was the one done in nineteen thirty
- 3:04when they spend half a million dollars to add on and remodel the home.
- 3:08And so that's if you come and visit it, that's how you see it.
- 3:14That's one of the great things about the Christmas Party is just going in
- 3:16and exploring it seems Yeah, that's one of the times that we actually take
- 3:22down the ropes and just let people wonder. Otherwise behind the ropes with a
- 3:27guided tour. No, that's why I love that party. You know,
- 3:32yes, we enjoy doing that party. You know, we were very fortunate
- 3:38when the granddaughter gave the home originally to the state, that ninety five percent
- 3:44of everything in the home belonged to frankin chain because after that remodel in nineteen
- 3:49thirty, they took Jane had photos taken of all the rooms. So we
- 3:54have all the furniture place just like it was. So it's like stepping into
- 3:59nineteen and now. I mean it was part of the state for many years.
- 4:04Yeahound organization, right, so a few years ago and I'm sure everybody
- 4:14in town will remember whenever you know, it wasn't going to be torn down
- 4:16to the foundation Stepdad, and so yes, we're part of the Frank Phillis
- 4:20Foundation. We do operate separate from Woolrock, which a lot of people don't
- 4:26understand. We are. We have our own nonprofit. Wollarock has theirs.
- 4:30Okay, so you know we have a membership program. They have one,
- 4:34right, it is separate, and so it's separate. I mean, we
- 4:38do one of the benefits of being a member, right, and it's considered
- 4:43our annual fundraiser because we don't do a lot of fund raising and that's our
- 4:47fundraiser. But part of our mission at the Frank Phillips Home is to preserve
- 4:53the history of Frank and Jane and to be able to offer tours, especially
- 4:57events on different things. And so one of the things like this music on
- 5:01the lawn, we offer it free to the public. We do have to
- 5:04have sponsors because of course we have to pay the musician type of thing,
- 5:09and so some of the other events. But I mean, you know,
- 5:15people here in Bortos, you know they've been to it, you know,
- 5:16but because it doesn't change, but you need to come and see it,
- 5:23So we do these. Not everybody's visited. No, it gets so surprised.
- 5:27You know, I've driven by the home up and down Cherokee. You
- 5:30haven't any all these years, but never stopped. Plus all the new people
- 5:33did have moved it down over the last several years. Yes, you can
- 5:38also rent the facility, Yes you can. Yeah, we've had several weddings
- 5:43on the grounds. We've had a birthday party. Now. When Burtleswill's prom
- 5:48was earlier this year, we had like forty five people out there taking their
- 5:53prom pictures. If the weather was nicer, I would have expected a few
- 5:57graduation pictures. Maybe this weekend. It is graduation. Tomorrow night is the
- 6:01big night. But you're up on my house. I have a senior and
- 6:05it's a busy week and yeah, it's it's going to be a busy weekend.
- 6:12I'm sure lots of parties and things. Yeah, I imagine so,
- 6:15and hopefully everybody is safe and sound. I'm you know, some of the
- 6:20other events, like I said, we try to get back to the Bortlesville
- 6:24people and the residents here, so that's why we offer these free events like
- 6:29and we for the first time this year, we did that Easter egg hot
- 6:31Yeah. Did that go overwhelmingly? Well, I mean a whole lot more
- 6:35people than we expected, you know. Of course I worked with Kevin Hope
- 6:40and he said, Okay, we're gonna have to do something maybe a little
- 6:43different next year with it. Oh my gosh. We did not expect that
- 6:48many people to come, but it was good, you know. And then
- 6:53we're going to do pumpkin decorating and October and then we do the trick or
- 6:59treat. But you know, now the other thing, don't By the about
- 7:05a month, we will have our flags out right in the yard of the
- 7:11Olds home. It's something that was started I don't know fifteen twenty years ago.
- 7:16Used to we would line a lot of streets. Now we just basically
- 7:19do our block and a few of the houses around us. But I think
- 7:24it's something that people look forward to driving down Cherokee and seeing all it.
- 7:31We're so grateful that the Conical Phillip's New Hire program actually are the ones that
- 7:35come and they consider planting my flags. So I'm not out there having to
- 7:40do it, but get those young people out there. There's lots of volunteer
- 7:44opportunities at the home too. Yes, you know, most all of our
- 7:48tours are given by volunteers. We have no full time employees. There's four
- 7:53of us that are part time. I'm even though I'm the director, I'm
- 7:57considered a part time person and so I'm always looking for volunteers for something.
- 8:05There's always something that needs to be done. I mean it's you have a
- 8:09facility there and you got to maintain it and take care of it very clean
- 8:13and operational. I mean it's I mean, you know, it was such
- 8:16a well well, we appreciate that. You know, a hundred year old
- 8:20house does have things that kind of go wrong. Every once in a while,
- 8:26things you got to keep an eye on. We were so lucky because
- 8:31of where the tornado was last week. You know that we had no damage.
- 8:33We had no limbs down in the yard, and which I happened to
- 8:37be out of town. But it's like I had somebody checked and it's like
- 8:41no, and it's like, we're so grateful. I think I've got a
- 8:43big willow in the yard. The most part, we were lucky. And
- 8:46I mean it kind of went close to the dealership too, kind of between
- 8:50yeah and you guys, and you know, so the trees down look pretty
- 8:54scary over there, but luckily that's in the river bottom and you know,
- 9:00the dance wall, did it suffer some serious damage? Right anyway? Yeah,
- 9:07that I'm glad that the home didn't sustain any damage. That's a great
- 9:11news. Yeah. So next Thursday six to seven, No, we actually
- 9:18changed thirty to eight. Okay. We thought it might be a little bit
- 9:22better to go with the six thirty to eight o'clock timeframe. Okay, because
- 9:26at one time the forecast was going to be hot next Thursday, but now
- 9:28it's got rain again, so you know, it just changes constantly. So
- 9:33we're hoping for good weather. You know, if it's a little cool,
- 9:37wear a jacket. If it's hot, well don't take your clothes off,
- 9:41but you can just dress appropriate. Yes, yeah, it is graduation time
- 9:48and summer with all the big events outside. I mentioned the the baseball tryouts,
- 9:52this evening music on the lawn next week. We've got manufacturer sales events
- 9:56going on. SUV season for four and the summer starts here for Toyota.
- 10:01Great incentives and big cash discounts, rebates and low interest rates on a wide
- 10:07selection of vehicles and if we don't have it, we'll go find it for
- 10:11you. The inventory, it's kind of been low the last few years,
- 10:16but a lot of that's just because our car's turned so fast. Yeah,
- 10:20the Toyota's in particular are we really need to be sold out to keep earning
- 10:24them, and it kind of so we're constantly just pushing to sell all we
- 10:30can. And it's a great time to be in the Toyota business. We
- 10:33have great product on the ground. We just yesterday got a hundred seventeen ninety
- 10:37four. We've got Tacomasaquahia Venza RAV four four runner on the ground and more
- 10:43incoming. We've got on the forward side some great super duties now in stock
- 10:50and available F one fifty Explorer Broncos. So stuff that has been hard to
- 10:54get over the last few years is starting to percolate through there more readily and
- 10:58it's starting to be available. So if you've been on the sidelines because of
- 11:03interest rates and I'm just not being able to find what you wanted, that's
- 11:07starting to change a little bit, and we're excited about that at Dungeons.
- 11:11It's good. And we're also looking to purchase nice used vehicles. We've got
- 11:18a lot of demand for local cars that are in grid shape and well maintained
- 11:22that are a few years old. I just can't seem to get enough of
- 11:26those for people that are value conscious and looking for a good, good vehicle.
- 11:31And so if you've got something like that, we'll certainly take a look
- 11:35at it and give you a top dollar for it. We've got a really
- 11:39neat thing going on at the dealership for the brand new Toyota land Cruiser,
- 11:43which will be out. We should have our first one hopefully around the end
- 11:46of the month. They're seeing around the three first or so. And this
- 11:50is a land Cruiser has changed from it a couple of years ago they stopped
- 11:56building it for a bit, and you know, it's become the land the
- 12:00top of the line suv for Toyota. It started though, many years ago,
- 12:05as more of a jeep or bronco, like you know, outdoor vehicle
- 12:09meant to be rugged and used hard, and you know, it's kind of
- 12:13going back and being a little bit of both. Now. It's going to
- 12:16be a bit smaller than the old the most recent land cruisers and harken back
- 12:20to those original ones. A lot of great technology on it, coming with
- 12:24hybrid engines and all wheel drive and great technology like all the Toyotas have now.
- 12:31And you know, we've had a lot of inquiries about this over the
- 12:37last few months and hundreds in fact, and we resisted the temptation to just
- 12:43pre sell it, and you know, we've calls from all over the country
- 12:46and it's kind of you know, during COVID we got used to this because
- 12:50you know, just people would search and big calls from Pennsylvania and people want
- 12:54to buy a Wrap four or something. You're like, aren't there something between
- 12:58here and there? But anyway that the land cruisers like that sort of understandably
- 13:05because there's a real low supply and high demand, but we decided not to
- 13:09do that. We've got on our website a way for you to go in
- 13:11and apply for the chance to purchase this. You still have to buy it.
- 13:16You're not going to win the land Cruiser, but we're going to have
- 13:20a little contest, so to speak, and select the person who gets to
- 13:24buy this first edition model we've got. We've had a bunch of entries already.
- 13:28We're looking for creative entries, and you don't really want somebody who's going
- 13:33to use this vehicle locally and show it off, and or maybe as you
- 13:37had land cruisers before and or history with Toyota and Dungeus would be helpful to
- 13:43or maybe just you're a social media person and want to help us spark this
- 13:50story a little bit. I think that would be fun. We'll give people
- 13:52extra credit for posting on their favorite social media about the contest anyway, just
- 14:01trying to have fun with that. We've only got one at this point.
- 14:05They're only going to be about five thousand of these in our region, which
- 14:07is a five states including Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
- 14:13So that's not very many really, and so we may get a couple
- 14:18more this year, but I think over the next few years it's going to
- 14:22be a great vehicle. There's going to we'll be able to have them just
- 14:26be patient and so. And our sales team has a lot of information on
- 14:31that. If you want to give them a shout, they will happy to
- 14:35answer your questions on the land Cruiser contest. So that's pretty fun. I
- 14:41think it sounds like it. It's different. We like to be a little
- 14:46bit different done just and we have our simple choice, simple price and program,
- 14:54and you know that's a it's something which I don't I don't always explain,
- 15:00but I did spend some time recently looking at other dealers websites and these
- 15:03crazy things that they put on there. These are I must say, you
- 15:09know, truthfully, barsfeel dealers have got pretty straightforward stuff. You know,
- 15:13I'm not talking about people in our market, but in bigger cities, what
- 15:18you run into is a is dealers that price cars and then then the fine
- 15:22print down below you'll see something like a protection package or an ad advantage to
- 15:28say that you must pay. I've got a sample here all vehicle price are
- 15:33plus tax, title plate and dealer fees such as a fifteen ninety nine dollars
- 15:41blank protection package sixteen hundred dollars. It doesn't say at all what it is.
- 15:48I mean, this is an otherwise reputable dealer. I know them,
- 15:52they're good people, but that's they're raising the price sixteen hundred dollars, not
- 15:56being very clear about not being very clear about it. That is not simple.
- 16:00But you know, that's what I'm talking about, is trying to be
- 16:03as straightforward and simple about it. Give you what you want. You know,
- 16:07it doesn't mean I can change the numbers and magically right. And you
- 16:11know, to me, that's kind of magic there where they're misleading about the
- 16:18value price they'll sell the car for. And you know the protection package likely
- 16:22has some value to some folks, but you may not want all of that.
- 16:26It should be your choice whether you purchase it or not. That's that's
- 16:29how we look at it. We put all that information online so and you
- 16:33can go there work your own deal. It's the same price online on the
- 16:38lot on the phone. You can actually go in now and you know all
- 16:44that calculation the sales management has used to have to do to figure out you
- 16:48know how to structure your deo, put it, get it to a lender,
- 16:51what you know, calculate your payment, things like the term of the
- 16:55loan, the down payment, comparing cash lease and purchase options, as far
- 17:02as financing. All that now can be done at home basically, and you
- 17:07can change the down payment, the term of the loan. You can do
- 17:11what they call a soft pool on your credit, so it actually it doesn't
- 17:17submit your credit to the bureaus, which can cause a lower credit score if
- 17:22you have too many of those pulls. So it just presents it to them
- 17:27and they and it says this is what you would get and it's something available
- 17:32to the individuals. I can't do it for you, but you can go
- 17:37in and improve that and it'll actually give you an estimate of your actual payment.
- 17:41And so they don't We don't have to, you know, just ask
- 17:45all those questions. It makes it easier, simpler, much faster to purchase
- 17:49the vehicle. You know, we look to to try to get it done.
- 17:53I mean a lot of it as much as possible. You know,
- 17:56when when we can, you know, before even arrive and try to make
- 18:02it as fast as possible. We know time is so valuable the people these
- 18:07days, and I want to say you might be seeing me. Well.
- 18:11Good piqued a little interest there, that's good. Yeah, well, that's
- 18:17good to hear. The We have other events, you guys, I know
- 18:22this. You mentioned the pumpkin event. On October, you'll have another music
- 18:27on the lawn and in September is when we're scheduling it for. And then
- 18:33you have the ongoing tours and stuff all the time. Tell us about about
- 18:37that and what you need to make to make a reservation or anything and when
- 18:42or the well, we're open Wednesday through Saturday, okay, And our first
- 18:47tour starts at Ton and our tours are on the hour and they're just under
- 18:49an hour length, but they are guided tours. You know, you see
- 18:56the full house first floor through the third floor. But we also do what
- 19:00we call behind the scenes or a director's tour at nine o'clock Weddy Thursday Friday.
- 19:06That tour requires a reservation, okay, And that's the one you get
- 19:11to go into maybe clouse that's behind the ropes. You get to see the
- 19:14basement, maybe the attic, the upstairs of the other building, just a
- 19:18little bit more to it, and so so a lot of people that have
- 19:22taken the regular tour, they'll come back and take the other tour because they
- 19:26all want to see the basement. There's really not that much in that basement,
- 19:30but it is interesting to see. I mean, it's you know,
- 19:33and in the lovely Priced Tower. That's one of my favorite parts of the
- 19:37Price Tower in the basement. So you know, so you know, they
- 19:41get to see the basement, you know, but it's a twenty six room
- 19:45mansion with nine bathrooms. Wow, but you know, and that's one of
- 19:52our main sources of revenue is of course the admission fees on that and how
- 19:56much are the tours. The tours if you're on sixty five, they're ten
- 20:00dollars. If you're sixty five and older, they're eight. Okay, now,
- 20:04the director's tour, the behind the scenes toore is fifteen. So it's
- 20:07actually kind of a bargain, it sounds like. And it's about an hour
- 20:11and a half or ever how long you want to take it. Okay,
- 20:15So that one just gets you're really engaged with, right, and so we
- 20:18try to keep that group a little bit smaller. Our numbers, you know,
- 20:25we really hurt during the pandemic and our numbers are starting to finally come
- 20:27back. We're starting to get a few bus groups back. But on that
- 20:32director's tour, like I said, we can keep it under ten people.
- 20:37And that's on nine am Wednesday through Thursday, Friday, Thursday and Friday,
- 20:41well Wednesday, Thursday. We don't do them on Saturdays, and we do
- 20:47them at nine o'clock because we need to get out of the regular people's way
- 20:52and so, but it does require reservation, because tell you the truth,
- 20:56I'm not always there at nine o'clock. How do you make a reservation?
- 21:00Or call the number the three three six two four nine one and just tell
- 21:06the name. You know, it's best if they leave their name and a
- 21:08phone number. We can call them back, or they can do it through
- 21:11our websites. Okay, And I get those emails and I call them back
- 21:15or email them back and say yeah, I got you, dam and so
- 21:18sure. The website has all kinds of information volunteering and events and everything else.
- 21:23And then you know, of course we have a Facebook page and that's
- 21:26where you need to follow. Just like it says that the music has been
- 21:30rescheduled till next week. So well, that's that's great news. And and
- 21:37that'll be the next event is next Thursday, Yeah, six thirty eight on
- 21:41the lawn through your lawn chairs and a picnic and the whole family and music.
- 21:48I wouldn't say cats, but bring your dogs. Awesome. That'll be
- 21:53a lot of fun. We're getting ready in our summer. There's so much
- 21:59going on. Be next on the SunFest and Hot Street Party, Ben Jonson
- 22:03Days, lots of baseball down downtown at Dungeons Stadium. It should be a
- 22:08lot of fun and I know it's going to be hot, soy for that.
- 22:14The other stuff going on with the dealership, we've got our service offerings,
- 22:18our pick up and delivery and remote service on the forward side. These
- 22:23are great new ways to get your vehicle service where we'll actually come to you
- 22:29and pick up the vehicle and bring it back to you. So it's kind
- 22:33of cool. And on some services like over the air software updates and things
- 22:38like that, we have a little escape we can send out to the vehicle
- 22:41and actually do it there. And that way we don't have to do all
- 22:45that processing of the vehicle, get it to the technician in the stall,
- 22:49get it back to you. I mean, it saves a lot of time.
- 22:52It actually keeps the other work, the bigger jobs that need to be
- 22:56in the stalls, going faster too. We continue to have some types of
- 23:02work that back up just because we you know, just hiring people that are
- 23:07qualified to fix all kinds of vehicles is hard these days. And always looking
- 23:11for great young folks that are looking for an opportunity to get in a career
- 23:17like that learn were it's this time of year we've got people going into both
- 23:22the Ford and Toyota apprenticeships programs and you can go in and get actually get
- 23:27a scholarship, get tool bonuses where we help you purchase your tools. You
- 23:34make a commitment for a couple of years. The Toyota T ten program,
- 23:37you actually go to school for a couple of months, come back for a
- 23:41couple of months, get to work in the dealership with the certified Toyota Techs.
- 23:45By the time you get done with the program, you're a certified Toyota
- 23:49tech And you know, it really can be a great way to launch your
- 23:53automotive tech career. And we see a lot of guys that you know coming
- 23:59out of it and other fields to enter this because the vehicles are becoming uh
- 24:06so different. I mean there are essentially moving computers and electronic hubs. I
- 24:12will say, I do use board service, and you guys are wonderful at
- 24:15all. Only place my car ever goes is to board service. I said,
- 24:21you know, it's like you know, I said, check whenever,
- 24:23and they all call me and say, okay, you really need to do
- 24:26this or that, and I say, okay, that's great. So I'm
- 24:29glad to know they'll come and get it. They will know you need to
- 24:32ask him about that. There's some limits on that, but we'll well,
- 24:37we'll do I think that we can do. That's great. So just another
- 24:47great day here in Bartlesville. Hopefully the rain has let up. It looks
- 24:51like it stopped for a bit. We'll be out there at the dealership if
- 24:53you want to come out and see the team. We've got our great associates
- 24:57out there, profession salary, noncommissioned sales associates. And with every new vehicle
- 25:04purchased, it done just you also get this what's called a Zurich Shield Elite
- 25:08Plus and this is advanced ceramic technology that actually protects the paint of the vehicle
- 25:15and the interior surfaces of the vehicle too. It's a like a what was
- 25:21that old stuff we used to put in our genes to keep them from the
- 25:22water from getting in and stuff and still keeping stains off. You know.
- 25:26It's it's really a great product and we apply it the initial time for no
- 25:33cost. It comes free with you with your new vehicle. You can buy
- 25:37additional applications and some insurance that goes with it. That that extends through your
- 25:41life of ownership of the vehicle. So if you ever have a stain or
- 25:45something that happens to the paint caused by acid, rain or just getting dirty
- 25:51and stuff which does happen, it really can help protect the resale value of
- 25:56your vehicle. And it's a it's we think it's a really great product and
- 26:00so check that out too. We've got new thing from Ford which we've had
- 26:07a lot of people checking with rising prices on auto insurance. Yeah, Ford
- 26:12Antoyotta both have insurance programs and Fords is really easy to get a quote as
- 26:18you as you're buying your vehicle, you just hit this QR code. You're
- 26:23pretty much instantaneously good at quote on your insurance and that way you can just
- 26:29see if you're getting good prices. I know, I've seen our insurance rates
- 26:32at home go up pretty dramatically in recent years, and I know we haven't
- 26:37to deal with the insurance of cars on the lot and stuff. Just how
- 26:41that whole industry has become much more expensive, and it is. I'm sure
- 26:47it's quite a challenge for the insurance companies to navigate all these issues too.
- 26:52But at the same time, you want to keep your costs down. There's
- 26:55another way just to get a nice easy quote. So if you have an
- 26:57existing car, you know, this is not like something you get when you
- 27:00purchase. No, this is you can do it anytime and like say ten
- 27:04minutes, Yeah right, that's call me when I get back, or Cayl
- 27:11William he'll be out there. You know, we've got a few deliveries today.
