Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What Have You Done For Yourself Lately?
Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily here popping in to your feet with
- 0:20Speaker 1: another installment of five Minute Friday.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:25Speaker 1: This week, I feel like there was just not enough time.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I got back from a trip to Rhode Island, which
- 0:33Speaker 1: was just so relaxing, and admittedly, I know I've talked
- 0:36Speaker 1: on the show about never wanting to leave New York before,
- 0:40Speaker 1: this was the first time I came back to the
- 0:42Speaker 1: city and felt some kind of way A little bit. Now,
- 0:46Speaker 1: a few days later, I'm happy to be here. It's
- 0:50Speaker 1: starting to feel right again. But man, that first day back,
- 0:55Speaker 1: it was something. Anyway, this morning was something too, And
- 0:59Speaker 1: that's what I'm going to talk about for my little
- 1:01Speaker 1: share this week. If you are new to the five
- 1:04Speaker 1: Minute Friday segments, welcome a little insight here. I share
- 1:08Speaker 1: a story and then I offer you a prompt to
- 1:12Speaker 1: think about going in to the weekend and finish things
- 1:15Speaker 1: off with some highlights of the week. Whether those are
- 1:19Speaker 1: content pics, articles, Netflix movies, to watch podcasts, you get
- 1:25Speaker 1: the idea. So this week, I'm talking about this morning, specifically,
- 1:31Speaker 1: this sub thirty minute experience where I thought that I
- 1:38Speaker 1: was going to collapse. And it's so funny, right because
- 1:41Speaker 1: while it was happening in my head. I thought to myself,
- 1:45Speaker 1: this is exactly what you're not supposed to be doing.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Like rule number one of the pandemic is social distancing
- 1:52Speaker 1: is king, and rule number two of the pandemic is
- 1:56Speaker 1: do not push your body too hard. I've interviewed so
- 1:59Speaker 1: many experts that have told me this, but regardless, alas,
- 2:03Speaker 1: there I was testing my limits, and I persisted, and
- 2:06Speaker 1: I was about roughly one point two miles into a
- 2:10Speaker 1: five K that I was running very hard, and I
- 2:14Speaker 1: asked myself if it was time to call it. At
- 2:18Speaker 1: the time, no one knew what I was doing. I
- 2:21Speaker 1: didn't tell any of my friends that I was going
- 2:22Speaker 1: to run a five k. I didn't mention it on Instagram.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I hadn't posted yet for the day. I hadn't even
- 2:28Speaker 1: posted since the day before. And there I was on
- 2:31Speaker 1: the West Side Highway, running south at seven thirty four am,
- 2:35Speaker 1: wearing a barely worn pair of Next percents, going after
- 2:41Speaker 1: this fast five k. I looked down at my watch
- 2:46Speaker 1: and there I was at one point four miles, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: I knew that if I stopped, I could delete the
- 2:50Speaker 1: workout from my garment, right, which is always tempting when
- 2:53Speaker 1: you feel as though what you're doing just like isn't enough.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And honestly, in those moments, we're the only people that
- 2:59Speaker 1: doesn't think it's enough.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:02Speaker 1: But you know, I could have deleted the workout for
- 3:04Speaker 1: my garment and gone on with my day and everything
- 3:07Speaker 1: would have been fine, although I probably would have spent
- 3:09Speaker 1: part of it wondering like what if I just kept going?
- 3:12Speaker 1: And then I would have asked myself if I was
- 3:15Speaker 1: going to do it the next day or the next
- 3:17Speaker 1: day or whatever. So I know what you're wondering, Why
- 3:19Speaker 1: are you so concerned about doing this fast five k?
- 3:21Speaker 1: So I talked about this a few weeks back about
- 3:25Speaker 1: the group of other journalists that I run with sometimes
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'll bite not over the last six months in real life,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but we do different challenges every month, and this month
- 3:35Speaker 1: the challenge is to run a faster five k.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So today was the baseline five k.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So I'm out there and I'm running, and although I
- 3:46Speaker 1: know that I could delete this from my garment, I think,
- 3:49Speaker 1: of course that, man, it'll be great if I can
- 3:51Speaker 1: do this really well and we can all talk about
- 3:53Speaker 1: it and all the things. But then I started to
- 3:56Speaker 1: ask myself as I'm like huffing and puffing along the
- 3:59Speaker 1: West Side high Way, like why is it that I
- 4:01Speaker 1: want to do this? Why do I really care about
- 4:05Speaker 1: finding my fast And I've I've come.
- 4:07Speaker 2: To realize that that answer.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Is never really singular with sport at all. Like whether
- 4:15Speaker 1: I am going for a new merph personal best, or
- 4:19Speaker 1: lifting more weight than the week before, or just running faster,
- 4:23Speaker 1: every single goal I've ever set for myself has been
- 4:26Speaker 1: multifaceted and just bigger than being better. It's really about
- 4:31Speaker 1: what these goals represent, right, It's the willingfulness to get uncomfortable.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Let's say that again, the willingfulness to get uncomfortable in
- 4:42Speaker 1: these goals. I'm just proving to myself a time and
- 4:44Speaker 1: time again I'm worthy of this effort, and especially now
- 4:49Speaker 1: reflecting on this moment after hearing about the cancelation of
- 4:52Speaker 1: the London Marathon.
- 4:55Speaker 2: That's all I'll say about that.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It's like I can do things in my life that
- 5:00Speaker 1: are exciting and extraordinary that have nothing to do with
- 5:03Speaker 1: someone else's predetermined start and finish lines, and I think
- 5:07Speaker 1: that's pretty special. I'll also say this as I'm thinking
- 5:10Speaker 1: about running on the West Side Highway, and how I
- 5:13Speaker 1: almost decided to stop. When was the last time you
- 5:16Speaker 1: learn something from your success, right, Like we learn things
- 5:20Speaker 1: in the moments of adversity, in the challenge, in what
- 5:23Speaker 1: I like to call the hurdle moments, and sometimes the
- 5:26Speaker 1: quote unquote failures.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But the thing about the failures is that they bring
- 5:30Speaker 2: so much.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Opportunity to pivot, to learn, to try something new. At
- 5:38Speaker 1: that moment, I was wondering if I was in the
- 5:40Speaker 1: middle of a failure, but the reality was that I
- 5:43Speaker 1: was in the middle of this great lesson that look
- 5:46Speaker 1: at what happens when you just commit to yourself.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And I'm huffing again, and I'm puffing again, and I've
- 5:52Speaker 1: got this soaked bandana draped around my neck, and I
- 5:55Speaker 1: knew that I felt as though I had gone out
- 5:58Speaker 1: too fast. And then my haptic happened on my wrist
- 6:03Speaker 1: and I looked down and it said three point zero miles,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and I knew that I was almost done. And when
- 6:08Speaker 1: I was done, you better believe. I collapsed onto a
- 6:12Speaker 1: park bench, wondering if this was me about to get
- 6:15Speaker 1: the coronavirus. And I sat there and I recovered, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: I was proud. And that's why I do it right
- 6:24Speaker 1: for that moment. I don't do it for the social media.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I don't do it for the bragging rights. I do
- 6:30Speaker 1: it because it feels good. It feels really good to
- 6:34Speaker 1: be proud of me. And so my prompt for you
- 6:39Speaker 1: this week, what do you do because it matters to you?
- 6:44Speaker 1: And what do you do because you want to signal
- 6:47Speaker 1: something to other people? Again, what do you do because
- 6:50Speaker 1: it matters to you? And what do you do because
- 6:53Speaker 1: you want to signal something to other people? Shout out
- 6:57Speaker 1: to my good friend Clay for the suggestion. Highlights of
- 7:01Speaker 1: the week. Links to all of this stuff will be
- 7:04Speaker 1: in the link with the description to this episode in
- 7:06Speaker 1: the show notes. First up, listen Zach to the Future. Now.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I feel it's very hard to believe that Mark Paul
- 7:14Speaker 1: Gossler aka Zach Morris has never watched an episode of
- 7:17Speaker 1: Saved by the Bell, But apparently that's the case, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: so naturally he is joining this man who is writing
- 7:24Speaker 1: the series reboot for this new podcast.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I'm so serious. I can't even believe this is a
- 7:30Speaker 2: real thing, but I'm so grateful for it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Basically, in the show, they're going to revisit Saved by
- 7:34Speaker 1: the Bell and recap its most epic moments, and I
- 7:36Speaker 1: feel like in this time when we're all longing for
- 7:39Speaker 1: nostalgia and things that make us think of happier times,
- 7:43Speaker 1: this might be.
- 7:44Speaker 2: A home run.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Next up on the list, watch Uncorked on Netflix. I
- 7:50Speaker 1: find so much joy in the nights where I can
- 7:52Speaker 1: actually just enjoy sitting on my couch and looking for
- 7:55Speaker 1: something to watch. And I stumbled on this the other night.
- 7:59Speaker 1: It is a movie about a boy that decides not
- 8:02Speaker 1: to join his family's barbecue business and pursue his dream
- 8:06Speaker 1: of becoming a smallia, which I think is just such
- 8:08Speaker 1: a fun storyline and I really liked it, and so
- 8:12Speaker 1: I think that you should watch it.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And also the main actor is very attractive.
- 8:18Speaker 1: If that drives anyone to click on over to the
- 8:20Speaker 1: show notes and watch this movie.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Something worth reading.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Systemic racism can't be fixed without tackling it within Cycling.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Bicycling Magazine's cover story this month is absolutely wonderful. Huge
- 8:33Speaker 1: kudos to the team over there. Basically, it features fourteen
- 8:36Speaker 1: different stories from black people who love bikes and it's
- 8:40Speaker 1: again it's so impactful, highly highly.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Encourage you to read.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And they've really flushed it out over on digital, so
- 8:48Speaker 1: give it a look. See this next pick. I was
- 8:51Speaker 1: turned onto from the Whalebone Afternoon to Light newsletter, which
- 8:55Speaker 1: I am obsessed with. If you haven't checked that out,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I definitely suggest you give it a look as we well.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It's a downloaded app called Haha.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Again. The app is called ha Ha. It's great. Basically,
- 9:07Speaker 2: you open the.
- 9:08Speaker 1: App and you're greeted immediately with like a stint from
- 9:11Speaker 1: a comedy show. And I find myself so often during
- 9:14Speaker 1: the workday staring into space, and sometimes I just need
- 9:17Speaker 1: to snap back into the swing of things, and so
- 9:20Speaker 1: this has been a tactic that I have used over
- 9:22Speaker 1: the last twenty four hours to like have a laugh
- 9:25Speaker 1: and then get back to it again. The app is
- 9:27Speaker 1: called Haha. And last, but not least, I want to
- 9:30Speaker 1: give a shout out this week to the hurdlers who
- 9:33Speaker 1: took the hurdle session how to Start and Stay running.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I had so much joy.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Just talking about the sport with you, and I appreciate
- 9:41Speaker 1: your energy and your excitement. If you missed this week's
- 9:44Speaker 1: hurdle session, it is available right now on the Hurdle
- 9:47Speaker 1: website and again, the link to check it out is

- 9:53Speaker 1: three for all of you, and I hope that you're
- 9:55Speaker 1: liking it. As always, if you have any feedback on
