- 0:27we bring news, trivia, fun facts, and more just for curious
- 0:31kids like you. Today, we're going on a journey
- 0:34to one of the most famous and exciting places in the world for
- 0:37animals and nature lovers, Serengeti National Park.
- 0:41Grab your imaginary binoculars and safari hats because we're
- 0:45heading to East Africa to explore the wild wonders of the
- 0:48Serengeti. Let's start by figuring out
- 0:50where Serengeti National Park is.
- 0:53The Serengeti is in the country of Tanzania, which is located in
- 0:57the eastern part of Africa. Tanzania is known for its
- 1:00amazing wildlife, tall mountains, and beautiful lakes.
- 1:04The Serengeti covers a huge area, about 5700 square miles
- 1:10that's almost as big as the state of Connecticut in the
- 1:12United States. The park is so big that it can
- 1:15take several days to explore all its areas.
- 1:18The word Serengeti comes from the Maasai language, spoken by
- 1:22the Maasai people who live in this region.
- 1:24It means endless plains, and if you ever see pictures or videos
- 1:28of the Serengeti, it's easy to see why.
- 1:31The land stretches very far, with grasslands that seem to go
- 1:35on forever. There are also scattered trees,
- 1:38rocky hills, and winding rivers. So why do people all over the
- 1:43world talk about the Serengeti? One big reason is the animals.
- 1:47The Serengeti is home to some of the most famous and fascinating
- 1:51animals on the planet. It's one of the best places to
- 1:53see wildlife in their natural habitat, which means they live
- 1:57freely and aren't inside cages or enclosures.
- 2:00Let's talk about some of the animals you can find in the
- 2:03Serengeti. There are over 70 different
- 2:05kinds of large mammals and more than 500 species of birds here.
- 2:10Some of the most famous animals are known as the Big 5.
- 2:14The Big 5 are the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and
- 2:18Buffalo. These animals are called the Big
- 2:215 because they are the largest and most powerful mammals in
- 2:24Africa. Lions are the kings and Queens
- 2:27of the Serengeti. In fact, the Serengeti has one
- 2:31of the largest lion populations in the world.
- 2:34If you're lucky, you might see a whole pride of lions lounging
- 2:37under a tree or hunting together for food.
- 2:41Did you know a lion's roar can be heard from up to 5 miles
- 2:44away? That's almost as far as 88
- 2:46football fields lined up end to end.
- 2:49Leopards are also found here, but they are much harder to spot
- 2:52because they like to hide in trees or thick bushes.
- 2:56Leopards are strong and fast, and they often drag their food
- 2:59up into trees to keep it safe from other animals.
- 3:02Elephants roam the Serengeti in family groups called herds.
- 3:06These gentle giants can weigh as much as a small car and have
- 3:09trunks that help them eat, drink and even play.
- 3:13Watching a herd of elephants walking together is an
- 3:16unforgettable sight. There are also black
- 3:18rhinoceroses, which are very rare and protected in the park.
- 3:23Rhinos have thick skin and big horns on their noses.
- 3:26They like to eat grass, leaves and branches.
- 3:29The African Buffalo is another member of the Big 5.
- 3:33These animals are strong and can be found in large herds,
- 3:37sometimes hundreds at a time. Buffaloes use their curved horns
- 3:41to defend themselves from predators.
- 3:43But the Serengeti isn't just about the Big 5.
- 3:46It's famous for many other animals, too.
- 3:49Zebras with their black and white stripes, Grays in huge
- 3:53groups. Wildebeest, which look a bit
- 3:55like a mix between a cow and an antelope, are everywhere.
- 3:59There are also giraffes, with their long necks reaching high
- 4:03into trees to eat leaves. You might see hippos cooling off
- 4:06in rivers, crocodiles waiting for prey, and cheetahs sprinting
- 4:10across the plains. One of the most amazing things
- 4:13that happens in the Serengeti is the Great Migration.
- 4:16This is the largest animal migration on land in the world.
- 4:21Every year, over 2 million animals, mostly wildebeest but
- 4:25also zebras and gazelles, travel in a giant loop across the
- 4:28Serengeti and into a nearby park in Kenya called Maasai Mara.
- 4:33They move in search of fresh grass and water because the
- 4:35seasons change and some areas become dry.
- 4:39During the Great Migration, animals have to cross rivers,
- 4:42face hungry predators like lions and crocodiles, and travel long
- 4:46distances. It's a dramatic and dangerous
- 4:49journey, but it's also one of nature's greatest sites.
- 4:53Did you know the migrating animals travel up to 1200 miles
- 4:57in a year? That's about the same distance
- 5:00as walking from New York City to Miami.
- 5:02The Serengeti's weather changes with the seasons.
- 5:06There's a rainy season, when lots of grass and flowers grow,
- 5:10and a dry season, when water can be hard to find.
- 5:13The animals have learned how to survive by moving to different
- 5:16areas, finding water and working together in groups.
- 5:20Besides animals, the Serengeti is also home to many kinds of
- 5:24birds. You might see ostriches, which
- 5:26are the biggest birds in the world and can't fly but can run
- 5:30really fast. There are also colorful birds
- 5:32like lilac breasted rollers and secretary birds, which have long
- 5:36legs and eat snakes. Bird watchers come from all over
- 5:39the world to see the incredible variety of birds in the
- 5:42Serengeti. Now let's talk about the people
- 5:45who help protect the Serengeti. National parks like Serengeti
- 5:49are special places because they are protected by law.
- 5:52This means that people can't build cities, cut down lots of
- 5:55trees, or hunt animals there. Park Rangers work in the
- 5:59Serengeti to keep the animal safe, guide visitors, and make
- 6:02sure that the park stays healthy for plants, animals, and people.
- 6:06Many scientists and researchers also work in the Serengeti.
- 6:10They study animal behavior, keep track of the number of different
- 6:13species, and try to understand how nature works.
- 6:17For example, scientists might put small collars with radio
- 6:20transmitters on lions or elephants.
- 6:23This helps them track where the animals go, what they eat, and
- 6:26how they take care of their young.
- 6:28The Maasai people live near the Serengeti and have been there
- 6:31for hundreds of years. They are known for their
- 6:33colorful clothes and unique way of life.
- 6:36The Maasai raise cattle and goats and know a lot about the
- 6:39land and animals. Sometimes they work with Park
- 6:43Rangers and scientists to help protect the wildlife.
- 6:46Tourism is important for the Serengeti.
- 6:48Too. Many people from around the
- 6:50world visit the park to see the animals and beautiful
- 6:53landscapes. The money from tourism helps pay
- 6:56for conservation, which means protecting the plants, animals
- 6:59and land. Tourists can go on guided
- 7:02safaris where they ride in special vehicles and look for
- 7:05animals. It's important for visitors to
- 7:08follow the parks rules, like not feeding the animals and staying
- 7:11quiet so they don't disturb the wildlife.
- 7:14Did you know that the Serengeti is also a World Heritage Site?
- 7:18This means that the United Nations thinks it's one of the
- 7:21most important places on Earth for nature and culture.
- 7:24The Serengeti is protected so that people in the future can
- 7:28also enjoy its wonders. Let's recap what we've learned
- 7:32today. Serengeti National Park is a
- 7:34giant protected area in Tanzania, East Africa, known for
- 7:38its endless plains and huge variety of animals.
- 7:42It's home to the Big 5 lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and
- 7:47Buffalo, as well as zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, and many
- 7:51more. Every year, millions of animals
- 7:54take part in the Great Migration, traveling hundreds of
- 7:57miles in search of food and water.
- 7:59The park's weather changes with the seasons, and the animals
- 8:02move to survive. People like Park Rangers,
- 8:05scientists, and the Maasai help take care of the park.
- 8:08Tourists visit to learn about and support the park, and
