- 2:29Speaker 2: the matchup of the Utes and the Houston Cougars today.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Craig James is going to join us. Yes, that Craig James,
- 2:36Speaker 2: the Pony Express Award is handed out to the top
- 2:39Speaker 2: offensive duo in college football. Devin Dampier, Wayshawn Parker, Braden
- 2:44Speaker 2: Pagan are making the Utes candidates. Bear Bachmeier, L.J. Martin
- 2:49Speaker 2: on the watch list, along with Legend Glasker. So two
- 2:52Speaker 2: schools in Utah on the Pony Express Award list. Watchlist
- 2:56Speaker 2: and Craig James spearheads that.
- 2:58Speaker 1: So he's going to join us on the show today.
- 3:00Speaker 1: That'll be at noon.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Bill Riley, the voice of the Utes before that at 1130.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Airing our grievances at 130. And of course, coordinator's corner
- 3:12Speaker 2: on Fridays at one o'clock this week. It is the
- 3:14Speaker 2: defensive coordinator, Colton Swan. Looking forward to all of that
- 3:19Speaker 2: on the show today. Looking forward to seeing your pretty faces.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And of course, hearing what you have to say about
- 3:25Speaker 2: this Utah-Houston matchup. I've got to give a shout-out to
- 3:30Speaker 2: our guy Bryce on our sister station. You can hear
- 3:33Speaker 2: Bryce and Bianucci across the street, so to speak. And
- 3:37Speaker 2: Bryce this.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Week did some really good work, some really good.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Research on something that we've been talking about, pressure and
- 3:45Speaker 2: timing for the Utah Utes and the interruption or lack
- 3:50Speaker 2: thereof that they are causing to opposing quarterbacks. And Bryce
- 3:54Speaker 2: went and he kind of time-stamped all of the effective
- 3:57Speaker 2: throws for the University of Utah, both on offense and defense.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And kind of what you.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Expect, this team is really, really good against the pass if,
- 4:10Speaker 2: like Morgan said, you can force a quarterback to get
- 4:14Speaker 2: that ball out in something like.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Three seconds. the math changes a little bit.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Now, interestingly for the Utes, all these opposing quarterbacks, they're
- 4:26Speaker 2: trying to get the ball out quickly to avoid pressure,
- 4:30Speaker 2: to avoid sacks, to avoid having to move. The timing
- 4:35Speaker 2: on these routes typically wants the ball out of the
- 4:38Speaker 2: quarterback's hands in two, two and a half seconds. And
- 4:42Speaker 2: where teams are having a lot more success is actually
- 4:45Speaker 2: when they have to improvise. Because we've had issues with
- 4:50Speaker 2: a front four rush, finishing the play, not moving a
- 4:54Speaker 2: quarterback's feet, not flushing them out of a pocket, not
- 4:57Speaker 2: causing even a little bit of duress. They're doing a
- 5:00Speaker 2: good job of that. The pressure rate and the hurry
- 5:02Speaker 2: rate is not all that bad. It is the finishing
- 5:06Speaker 2: of the sacks that we've been complaining about all year,
- 5:08Speaker 2: and you heard Morgan Scali talking about and explaining the
- 5:11Speaker 2: numbers on and things like that. And in the Colorado
- 5:15Speaker 2: game specifically, and again, shout out to Bryce for doing
- 5:19Speaker 2: this leg work, In the Colorado game specifically, when Isaac
- 5:24Speaker 2: Wilson got the ball out quickly, he was not completing
- 5:27Speaker 2: his passes very effectively. That's where Utah's pass efficiency defense
- 5:31Speaker 2: really shows itself. When he was improvising and holding the
- 5:36Speaker 2: ball and scrambling a little bit, that's where the man
- 5:40Speaker 2: coverage breaks down. And I'm not telling you anything that
- 5:43Speaker 2: you don't know. I'm not telling you anything that Eric
- 5:45Speaker 2: Weddle wasn't discussing on the show yesterday when we joined him,
- 5:48Speaker 2: or when he joined us is a better way to
- 5:50Speaker 2: say that. But because the finishing rate of your blitzes and,
- 5:57Speaker 2: more importantly, your four-man rush is not up to par,
- 6:01Speaker 2: not up to the standard that, you know, Sac Lake
- 6:03Speaker 2: City has kind of set for the fan base year
- 6:07Speaker 2: over year over year, you're actually finding yourself in a
- 6:10Speaker 2: situation where, you know, the man coverage is something that
- 6:15Speaker 2: we have to start wondering about Weddle told us yesterday
- 6:20Speaker 2: that if it was his call, he would certainly incorporate
- 6:23Speaker 2: the man concepts, but he would make his base kind
- 6:26Speaker 2: of a two-shell defense and allow some more versatility in
- 6:30Speaker 2: the back end. You're married to, in some ways, this
- 6:34Speaker 2: man coverage philosophy in a defense that traces all the
- 6:38Speaker 2: way back to Fred Whittingham. And Colton Swan and company
- 6:41Speaker 2: are certainly going to tweak some things this week, and
- 6:44Speaker 2: they're going to do their best to not only get
- 6:46Speaker 2: home and get Connor Wegman to the ground, and to
- 6:49Speaker 2: hit him and to get hands into the passing lanes
- 6:51Speaker 2: from your defensive lineman if you can't hit him.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But they're going to have to figure out how to manage.
- 6:57Speaker 2: The situation that will arise probably four, five, six times
- 7:01Speaker 2: in this game where you've got a little pressure coming,
- 7:05Speaker 2: whether that's blitzes or a stunt that worked or whether
- 7:08Speaker 2: it's just your guys up front winning their man-on-man matchup, which,
- 7:12Speaker 2: let's be clear, hasn't happened enough this year. When Connor
- 7:18Speaker 2: Wegman finds himself under duress and he looks downfield, because
- 7:21Speaker 2: he will keep his eyes downfield, 20 touchdowns, two interceptions,
- 7:25Speaker 2: great yards per completion average for him. He's a top
- 7:30Speaker 2: three quarterback, I think, in this Big 12 conference, and
- 7:35Speaker 2: you'll see that on Saturday night in a dark mode game.
- 7:39Speaker 2: When he's under a little bit of duress or he
- 7:42Speaker 2: just realizes that that mental clock is starting to get
- 7:45Speaker 2: to three, four, heaven forbid, five seconds before somebody hits him,
- 7:51Speaker 2: he's going to look downfield. And if there is a
- 7:53Speaker 2: receiver open, he's going to drop the ball where it's
- 7:55Speaker 2: supposed to be. And guys probably are open when you're
- 7:59Speaker 2: four and a half, five seconds into coverage. But even
- 8:01Speaker 2: if they're not, what Connor Wegman is going to look
- 8:03Speaker 2: downfield and see is he is going to potentially see
- 8:07Speaker 2: defensive backs whose eyes are on their man, who are
- 8:11Speaker 2: not looking into the backfield, who are not wondering what's
- 8:14Speaker 2: going on, not wondering if the play is over. They're
- 8:18Speaker 2: listening for a whistle, right, and they're keeping.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Their eye discipline.
- 8:22Speaker 2: If Sharif Shah and Derek Odom and Colton Swan and
- 8:25Speaker 2: company have done the job the way that they're supposed
- 8:28Speaker 2: to do the job and they've gotten these guys away
- 8:30Speaker 2: from some of the bad habits that we really haven't
- 8:32Speaker 2: seen since week one, then their eye discipline is good.
- 8:36Speaker 2: The downside of that is that Connor Wegman is now
- 8:40Speaker 2: looking downfield and seeing that nobody has eyes on him
- 8:43Speaker 2: or that maybe there's one backer who has eyes on him.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And if he can beat that one man, which he's
- 8:49Speaker 2: athletic enough to do, which he's good enough to do,
- 8:52Speaker 2: now he can make a chunk play with his feet
- 8:54Speaker 2: because you've run the guys off in coverage.
- 8:57Speaker 1: This is the balance. This is the battle.
- 8:59Speaker 2: This is the strategic sort of back and forth that
- 9:03Speaker 2: Colton Swan is going to have to figure out with
- 9:06Speaker 2: Houston this week because they've got a quarterback. And by
- 9:08Speaker 2: the way, Devin Dampier does the exact same thing to
- 9:12Speaker 2: Houston's defense if they're overly committed to man coverage. or
- 9:15Speaker 2: if they don't have someone whose responsibility it is to
- 9:18Speaker 2: spy him and to green dog, as they call it,
- 9:22Speaker 2: from that backer position. If you're in a zone concept
- 9:26Speaker 2: or a man concept and there's nobody in your zone
- 9:31Speaker 2: or your man doesn't leak out of the backfield, he
- 9:33Speaker 2: stays in to block, and you're the backer who's assigned
- 9:37Speaker 2: to that running back and pass coverage, In most defensive calls,
- 9:42Speaker 2: as that play progresses into the one and a half,
- 9:44Speaker 2: two second mark, you're given the option, and it's not
- 9:48Speaker 2: really an option, you're given the duty of, all right,
- 9:51Speaker 2: that guy's not in the route combination, that guy's not
- 9:53Speaker 2: in the route structure, he's staying in the block, he's
- 9:56Speaker 2: chipping on Lance Holtzclaw or whatever, now I need to
- 9:59Speaker 2: find a seam. and I need to get myself to
- 10:01Speaker 2: the quarterback as that backer. It sometimes looks like a spy.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It's not really a spy. It's a linebacker who realizes
- 10:08Speaker 2: his pass coverage duty in a man concept is moot
- 10:13Speaker 2: because there's nobody there to actually.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Run out in the route.
- 10:19Speaker 2: What we're looking at is a Houston team that's got
- 10:22Speaker 2: a talented wide receiving core, that's got a quality run game,
- 10:27Speaker 2: but most importantly, has a quarterback that is going to
- 10:32Speaker 2: cause you problems if you are not at your very,
- 10:36Speaker 2: very best in this Utah football scenario.
- 10:39Speaker 1: That's what we're looking for.
- 10:41Speaker 2: You're looking at Colton Swan and company finding a way
- 10:44Speaker 2: to not reinvent the wheel, but to.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Get things done.
- 10:48Speaker 2: A little bit more uncomfortable for Connor Wegman. 877-353-0700.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Tell me what you think the best way to achieve
- 10:59Speaker 1: that is.
- 11:01Speaker 2: We have looked at a scenario over and over many
- 11:05Speaker 2: different years, many different combinations of players where this Utah
- 11:10Speaker 2: defense looks at it and says, all right, we might
- 11:15Speaker 2: be a little bit overmatched athletically against, like USC back
- 11:20Speaker 2: in the Pac-12, for example. But our concepts, our identity
- 11:24Speaker 2: defensively in pass coverage is to stay most of the time,
- 11:29Speaker 2: the vast majority of the time, in man.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Right?
- 11:33Speaker 2: And we're going to allow the safeties to help. We're
- 11:38Speaker 2: going to hopefully get home in a pass rush. And
- 11:41Speaker 2: you saw some guys cause problems with that. Caleb Williams
- 11:44Speaker 2: was really good. even though you ended up beating him, right?
- 11:49Speaker 2: Sam Darnold, when he was a freshman, you remember that
- 11:52Speaker 2: his college football debut actually happened at Rice-Eccles Stadium, and
- 11:57Speaker 2: you saw some of his ability to improvise and to
- 12:00Speaker 2: take what the defense gave him, and that's where Connor
- 12:04Speaker 2: Wegman is dangerous.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Now, obviously, the.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Flip side of this coin is this is exactly where
- 12:09Speaker 2: Utah's offense is dangerous as well, and that's why in
- 12:12Speaker 2: some of our conversations this week, I've said I think
- 12:14Speaker 2: this is going to be a potentially high-scoring game when
- 12:18Speaker 2: Utah takes on Houston on Saturday night.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I could see this one being.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Like a 42-41 type game. Right now, I haven't checked
- 12:28Speaker 2: the spread today, but the last time I looked, this
- 12:32Speaker 2: was a six-and-a-half point. Utes were six-and-a-half point favorites against
- 12:36Speaker 2: the number 14-ranked team in the country, which speaks to
- 12:41Speaker 2: what the Bryce Echols nighttime atmosphere looks like still. according
- 12:46Speaker 2: to the odds by DraftKings on ESPN, 6.5-point game. The
- 12:52Speaker 2: over-under is at 56.5. I'm tempted, for entertainment purposes only,
- 12:57Speaker 2: I'm tempted to say that I'm hammering the over on
- 13:01Speaker 2: that because both of these offenses can score. You're looking
- 13:05Speaker 2: at the number one scoring offense in the Big 12
- 13:07Speaker 2: in Utah versus the number two scoring offense in the
- 13:10Speaker 2: Big 12 in Houston.
- 13:12Speaker 1: And now six games.
- 13:14Speaker 2: In Utah's case, six games of tape for Houston to
- 13:17Speaker 2: look at and try to dissect and figure out where
- 13:20Speaker 2: the gaps are in their defense. And, of course, Utah's
- 13:23Speaker 2: got seven games of Houston tape this year where they
- 13:26Speaker 2: can do the same. And Houston's best analogy, the most
- 13:31Speaker 2: analogous matchup to the University of Utah on their schedule
- 13:35Speaker 2: so far is probably against Texas Tech. That was the
- 13:40Speaker 2: only loss of the Houston Cougars season. As I've said
- 13:42Speaker 2: several times this week, it came down to the very
- 13:45Speaker 2: last play of the game.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It was an inch and a half.
- 13:52Speaker 2: If Connor Wegman was 6'5, that's a score, and Houston
- 13:57Speaker 2: ties that game and we get into overtime. In that game,
- 14:03Speaker 2: Wegman was 27-38 for 283 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Houston also ran for 175 yards in the game, and
- 14:13Speaker 2: they split it between Makai Hughes, Rashawn Sanford, and most importantly,
- 14:18Speaker 2: in my opinion, Connor Wegman carrying the ball 13 times
- 14:21Speaker 2: in that game. I think about six of those, maybe five,
- 14:24Speaker 2: were designed runs. Now, Texas Tech got over, and Texas
- 14:28Speaker 2: Tech won that football game. Will Hammond had, you could
- 14:31Speaker 2: make an argument, probably one of the best games of
- 14:34Speaker 2: the year. He's had some struggles since then. And same thing,
- 14:37Speaker 2: Texas Tech... was able to sort of distribute the touches,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and they gave Cameron Dickey 16 carries, Jacoby Williams 7 carries,
- 14:48Speaker 2: Will Hammond carried the ball 5 times, and they ended
- 14:51Speaker 2: up with 168 yards.
- 14:53Speaker 1: So the reason I.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Bring up those numbers is that was a rock fight.
- 14:57Speaker 2: That was both teams throwing their punches offensively. That one
- 15:01Speaker 2: ended up being 28-26 at the end of it, and
- 15:05Speaker 2: Houston almost, just barely coming up short, against Texas Tech,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and I think that is the closest matchup, or that's
- 15:12Speaker 2: the closest picture you're going to get to what Houston
- 15:15Speaker 2: looks like against a team that is like Utah. Now,
- 15:19Speaker 2: Oklahoma State obviously did some nice things also. Another close
- 15:23Speaker 2: game for Houston. They won that one 35-32, and Utah's
- 15:29Speaker 2: only close game this year, as all of you are aware,
- 15:31Speaker 2: was against a Colorado team that most of us think
- 15:34Speaker 2: that should not have been close. The reason I'm not
- 15:38Speaker 2: telling you that Houston and Oklahoma State is a matchup
- 15:42Speaker 2: to look at is because I just don't think that
- 15:46Speaker 2: Oklahoma State, as a comparative to Utah, really kind.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Of holds the same comparative water.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Utah's defense is significantly better than Oklahoma State's defense when
- 15:59Speaker 2: it comes to a scoring perspective. Utah's offense is four
- 16:03Speaker 2: spots higher and three points better than Oklahoma State's offense.
- 16:07Speaker 2: If you're doing it this way, and it's probably not
- 16:11Speaker 2: the best way to do it, the common opponent math,
- 16:15Speaker 2: and that's how you're assessing whether or not Utah's equipped
- 16:17Speaker 2: to beat this Houston team, I think the better comparative
- 16:21Speaker 2: to look at is that Texas Tech game. And in
- 16:25Speaker 2: that case, Texas Tech came out on top. Maybe Utah's
- 16:28Speaker 2: able to come out on top as well. I'm seeing
- 16:31Speaker 2: a lot of pundits, a lot of predictors saying, giving
- 16:35Speaker 2: their favor to Houston in this game, and I think
- 16:37Speaker 2: that's somewhat reactive to what we saw from Utah against Colorado.
- 16:43Speaker 2: There were certainly some things put on tape in that
- 16:45Speaker 2: game that the Utes would like to have back. Houston
- 16:50Speaker 2: just above Utah in rush yards per.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Game, by the way.
- 16:54Speaker 2: They average 220.29, okay, 220 yards a game. Utah also
- 17:04Speaker 2: averages 220 yards a game, but Houston gets an extra.
- 17:14Speaker 2: 12 yards per game over what Utah averages so far
- 17:17Speaker 2: this year. So, again, we're talking about a mirror match
- 17:21Speaker 2: of sorts. Dynamic quarterback versus dynamic quarterback. Somewhat surprising run
- 17:29Speaker 2: game versus... I guess us here in Salt Lake City
- 17:32Speaker 2: are not all that surprised by the run game because
- 17:34Speaker 2: we thought Wayshon Parker was talented. The surprise in the
- 17:36Speaker 2: run game comes from how proficient and efficient the offensive
- 17:40Speaker 2: line has been. And we'll talk about who's available and
- 17:42Speaker 2: who's not when the injury report comes up. Part of
- 17:48Speaker 2: the question is, can you beat yourself?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Because Houston is a lot like you.
- 17:56Speaker 2: If you're fighting your twin brother, any of you out
- 17:59Speaker 2: there who have twin brothers, or maybe you've got that
- 18:02Speaker 2: friend or that cousin or the person who is most
- 18:05Speaker 2: like you. You're built the same. You've got the same taste.
- 18:09Speaker 2: You work out almost an equal amount. You played all
- 18:13Speaker 2: the same sports growing up. Both of you were all state.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Most of you were all region, whatever. When it comes
- 18:20Speaker 2: down to it, can you beat that guy? Can Utah
- 18:23Speaker 2: beat a team that is very much like itself? In
- 18:29Speaker 2: one hand, you're most prepared to take on a team
- 18:31Speaker 2: that has the similar offensive elements and similar defensive elements
- 18:35Speaker 2: to what you have because.
- 18:38Speaker 1: You've been practicing against that, right?
- 18:40Speaker 2: This defense, you've got to go all the way back
- 18:42Speaker 2: to camp now, but this Utah defense practiced against Devin
- 18:45Speaker 2: Dampier in spring ball, and they practiced against Bert Ficklin
- 18:48Speaker 2: in spring ball, and they practiced against those guys in
- 18:50Speaker 2: the early stages of fall camp. And when you look
- 18:53Speaker 2: at that, you say, all right, you know, I think
- 18:56Speaker 2: that we can– I don't think we can beat that.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I think defensively we can stop that because we have
- 19:01Speaker 2: some familiarity with that. The biggest advantage Utah has, I think,
- 19:06Speaker 2: in this game is when they've got the ball and
- 19:10Speaker 2: they're willing to throw. Now, we had this conversation with
- 19:14Speaker 2: Colton Swan and there was the, well, I'll let.
- 19:19Speaker 1: You listen to it.
- 19:20Speaker 2: We pre-recorded with Colton Swan and that's coming up on
- 19:23Speaker 2: the show But there's a conversation to be had about
- 19:25Speaker 2: how many offensive possessions you want to give Connor Wegman.
- 19:29Speaker 2: You want to give Houston. And to reduce those, you're
- 19:34Speaker 2: going to go strength versus strength. Utah's run game versus
- 19:37Speaker 2: Houston's run defense. And Houston's run defense is a heck
- 19:41Speaker 2: of a lot better than their passing defense. They are
- 19:43Speaker 2: 13th in the league in passing defense. So which choice
- 19:48Speaker 2: do you make?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Throw the ball. ball more.
- 19:50Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 19:52Speaker 2: At RealOC Sports if you want to get a hold
- 19:54Speaker 2: of me on Twitter. Offensive game plan wise for Utah.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Do you want to go strength versus strength or perceived strength,
- 20:04Speaker 2: maybe strength. Utah's passing game is a maybe strength. It's
- 20:07Speaker 2: not their most it's not the most obvious place that
- 20:12Speaker 2: you would go. But do you want to take that,
- 20:15Speaker 2: Devin Dampier's arm, and your wide receiving core against Houston's
- 20:20Speaker 2: defense that gives up 265 yards per game? I'll put
- 20:25Speaker 2: the poll question up on Twitter, 877-353-0700. Would you rather
- 20:29Speaker 2: see Utah try to pound the rock and take possessions
- 20:33Speaker 2: away from Connor Wegman and a proficient Houston offense, play
- 20:38Speaker 2: a little bit of ball control, dare I say, go
- 20:41Speaker 2: back to the Kyle Whittingham way of doing things, at
- 20:43Speaker 2: least on some level, or would you rather see them
- 20:46Speaker 2: attack the weakness in Houston's defense, which is their passing game?
- 20:50Speaker 2: And in that case, you've got to trust Devin Dampier's arm.
- 20:57Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Let me know what you would do if you're making
- 21:00Speaker 2: the decision. You're Morgan Scali.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Mac G.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Kevin McGibbon is going to call in the play calls,
- 21:05Speaker 2: but you're going to tell him the philosophy. I want
- 21:07Speaker 2: to speed this game up. I want to condense the possessions.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I want to ball control this thing. I want eight
- 21:14Speaker 2: minutes of possession in every quarter, and that means Wayshon
- 21:17Speaker 2: Parker grinding it out three and four yards at a time,
- 21:20Speaker 2: or I want to run up the score on these fools.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I want to take the top off that defense because
- 21:25Speaker 2: their secondary is their weakness.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Let me know what you think. We've got Bill Riley,
- 21:30Speaker 1: the voice of the Utes, joining us next.
- 21:31Speaker 2: We're off and running from Smith's Marketplace in West Jordan,
- 21:36Speaker 2: 90th South, just west of Redwood Road.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Come see us. We've got giveaways, ultimate tailgate passes. We've
- 21:42Speaker 1: got Smith's gift cards.
- 21:44Speaker 2: And I think maybe we have one more pair of
- 21:46Speaker 2: Utah versus Houston tickets.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I think we gave away one. Yes, we've got one more.
- 21:51Speaker 2: So you probably have about 15 minutes tops before that
- 21:55Speaker 2: thing is gone.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Come down and see us. Bill Riley next.
- 21:59Speaker 2: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 22:01Speaker 2: You're tuned to.
- 22:13Speaker 5: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 22:17Speaker 5: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show, coming at you
- 22:30Speaker 2: from Smith's Marketplace in West Jordan, Utah, 90th South, just
- 22:33Speaker 2: west of Redwood Road. Tim Ross, if you're out there listening,
- 22:39Speaker 2: you better bring flowers home for your wife when you
- 22:42Speaker 2: get back from work tonight or wherever you're at right now.
- 22:45Speaker 2: She came sprinting in here, had the Pepsi receipt, and
- 22:49Speaker 2: snagged a pair of tickets for you and a tailgate pass.
- 22:53Speaker 1: So you've outkicked your coverage there, buddy. You better make.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Sure that you express gratitude to your lovely wife for
- 23:01Speaker 2: running that errand for you and getting you a pair
- 23:03Speaker 2: of Utah versus Houston tickets.
- 23:05Speaker 1: The tickets are gone.
- 23:06Speaker 2: We still have tailgate passes, and we still have Smith's
- 23:09Speaker 2: gift card. So come by and see us just west
- 23:13Speaker 2: of Redwood Road on 90th South. The voice of the
- 23:15Speaker 2: youth is Bill Riley, kind enough to swing by on
- 23:17Speaker 2: a Friday.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Bill, how are you?
- 23:19Speaker 6: I'm doing great. How are things at Smith's?
- 23:24Speaker 1: You know, I love a good Smith's marketplace.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I think I probably go here about three times a
- 23:30Speaker 2: week at the downtown location. But it's great to be
- 23:32Speaker 2: out here in West Jordan, closer to the old stomping grounds.
- 23:37Speaker 6: Absolutely, positively. So glad to tell the people at Smith's
- 23:41Speaker 6: I said, hi, I will be in the Smith's tailgate
- 23:43Speaker 6: tent tomorrow night doing a little pregame.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And we do have some passes. So you can go
- 23:48Speaker 2: and heckle Bill Riley if you swing down here. and
- 23:51Speaker 2: grab a tailgate pass. The one pass is good for
- 23:53Speaker 2: you plus three, by the way, so don't be harassing
- 23:56Speaker 2: that you want three or four of them because one
- 23:58Speaker 2: gets four of you in.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Let's talk about this game, Bill.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Utah survives against Colorado, and I don't know that they
- 24:05Speaker 2: did much more than that. When you listen to the
- 24:07Speaker 2: coaching staff and the players talk about it, nobody is
- 24:10Speaker 2: happy with the win, and ultimately it is a win,
- 24:13Speaker 2: so you've got to be at least happy with that.
- 24:15Speaker 1: They improve to 6-0.
- 24:16Speaker 2: They're the number 10 ranked team in the country, and
- 24:19Speaker 2: before we get to a Houston matchup, Did we learn
- 24:22Speaker 2: anything meaningful from that Colorado game? In your mind, is
- 24:27Speaker 2: that anything close to what Utah football actually is, or
- 24:31Speaker 2: is that kind of the stinker game that you see
- 24:33Speaker 2: once or twice a year from every college football team?
- 24:37Speaker 6: Well, I think what we learned, Sean, was when you
- 24:40Speaker 6: have red zone opportunities and you want to beat a
- 24:43Speaker 6: team on the road, you should score touchdowns. Because as
- 24:46Speaker 6: Scali has said a couple of times, including the coach's
- 24:48Speaker 6: show with me, when you kick field goals, that allows
- 24:52Speaker 6: another team to stick around. The difference between being up
- 24:55Speaker 6: at half 13-0 and 24-0.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Is a huge deal.
- 25:00Speaker 6: If you're up 24-0 on Colorado last week, you pay
- 25:02Speaker 6: those two red zone trips off with touchdowns instead of
- 25:05Speaker 6: field goals. I don't know what the Buffs do coming
- 25:07Speaker 6: out of the locker room, but the Buffs get that freak, weird,
- 25:11Speaker 6: fluky touchdown where the running back was standing all by himself.
- 25:15Speaker 6: Then all of a sudden it's 13-7 instead of 24-7.
- 25:19Speaker 6: That's a huge difference. So I think to me the
- 25:22Speaker 6: big lesson to take away is when you have an
- 25:25Speaker 6: opportunity to put a team away, whether it's Colorado, whether
- 25:29Speaker 6: it's Kansas, whether it's Houston tomorrow night, take that chance.
- 25:33Speaker 6: Pay off red zone trips with touchdowns as much as
- 25:35Speaker 6: you can and not field goals.
- 25:39Speaker 2: We're looking at a Utah football team right now that
- 25:43Speaker 2: six weeks in, half a season gone, it ain't Sac
- 25:47Speaker 2: Lake City, not this year, right? They're not getting home.
- 25:51Speaker 2: They're not finishing even when they pressure. And good quarterbacks
- 25:55Speaker 2: can exploit things like that. Good mobile quarterbacks can make
- 25:58Speaker 2: your life miserable if you're playing man coverage and they've
- 26:01Speaker 2: got four and five seconds before they have to throw
- 26:04Speaker 2: because they're able to sidestep a rush or whatever. And
- 26:08Speaker 2: you and I have talked about this, I think, every
- 26:09Speaker 2: single week, and Morgan's been asked about it, and Colton
- 26:12Speaker 2: Swan's been asked about.
- 26:13Speaker 1: It every single week. Is this who they are?
- 26:16Speaker 2: Is this a team that you just have to adjust
- 26:18Speaker 2: to the fact that you're probably not going to have
- 26:21Speaker 2: a ton of QB hits and sacks this year?
- 26:24Speaker 6: Well, the hits are there a little bit. The sacks
- 26:26Speaker 6: aren't there. Here's what I will say. Is this going
- 26:28Speaker 6: to be one of those great 55-sack, sack-leg city teams? Well,
- 26:32Speaker 6: you're six games in. That's probably not.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Going to be the case. But.
- 26:38Speaker 6: You're a half step away about four or five times
- 26:40Speaker 6: a game from one of your defensive ends getting home,
- 26:44Speaker 6: or maybe a whiff away from grabbing a quarterback who's
- 26:47Speaker 6: on a scramble. I think they've been close to some sacks, Sean,
- 26:51Speaker 6: and maybe tomorrow night against Connor Wegman, they get a
- 26:53Speaker 6: couple of those home. But, yeah, this is not going
- 26:56Speaker 6: to be one of those traditional sack lake cities, front fours,
- 27:00Speaker 6: where you've got four or five guys with six, seven,
- 27:03Speaker 6: eight sacks, or maybe one guy with 12 or 13 sacks.
- 27:06Speaker 6: but they're not far away from getting some of those.
- 27:08Speaker 6: I think if you translate some of those pressures or
- 27:12Speaker 6: near misses into sacks, it changes the equation just a
- 27:15Speaker 6: little bit. But, you know, you're halfway home in the season.
- 27:19Speaker 4: This is kind of who you are.
- 27:21Speaker 6: You're getting pretty good pressure. You're just not getting home.
- 27:24Speaker 6: If you can get home a couple of times tomorrow night,
- 27:26Speaker 6: and maybe more importantly, don't because unlike some of the
- 27:29Speaker 6: other quarterbacks, Connor Wegman can beat you with his legs.
- 27:32Speaker 6: He's not going to go out there and run every time.
- 27:35Speaker 6: He ran for 44 yards on a play against Oklahoma
- 27:37Speaker 6: state last week. He is a very good athlete. He
- 27:40Speaker 6: is a dual threat guy. Maybe not in the same
- 27:43Speaker 6: sense of bird thick winter or Devin Dampier is, but
- 27:46Speaker 6: tomorrow night to me, it's about getting home, but maybe
- 27:49Speaker 6: more importantly, not letting Connor Wegman escape and make a
- 27:54Speaker 6: big play with his legs.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Well, I was about to ask you, right?
- 27:56Speaker 2: There's, There's a couple, I think, big philosophy questions, offensive
- 28:00Speaker 2: and defensive philosophy questions for this Utah versus Houston matchup. Defensively,
- 28:11Speaker 2: do you go with containment or do you try to
- 28:15Speaker 2: get home and pressure him? Do you want this team
- 28:20Speaker 2: to over-index on getting to the quarterback and solving that problem? Or,
- 28:26Speaker 2: like you just said, you maybe sacrifice a little pressure
- 28:29Speaker 2: and just say, we'll hang back and we'll maintain gap
- 28:32Speaker 2: integrity and we'll make sure that he doesn't hurt us
- 28:35Speaker 2: around the edges or slipping out. Because if you just
- 28:38Speaker 2: take on your block and you've got eyes on and
- 28:41Speaker 2: you potentially jump and try to bat a pass down,
- 28:43Speaker 2: there's still a huge play for the defense. So I
- 28:46Speaker 2: guess it's a safe approach or a risk approach when
- 28:49Speaker 2: it comes to your pass rush against Wegmans.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Well, I think you have to apply pressure. I just
- 28:53Speaker 6: think you do. The one team that beat them this year,
- 28:55Speaker 6: Texas Tech, was able to apply pressure. Connor Wegman is
- 28:58Speaker 6: an excellent passer, too, and he's got three really good
- 29:01Speaker 6: wide receivers and a pro tight end. You can't just
- 29:06Speaker 6: hope to just play contain on him. You have to
- 29:09Speaker 6: apply that pressure. But to your point, gap integrity, lane integrity,
- 29:13Speaker 6: try not to let him get outside because he's very
- 29:16Speaker 6: good at making plays, not just with his legs, but
- 29:19Speaker 6: but with his arm too outside the pocket. So I
- 29:22Speaker 6: don't know that there's a right answer here, Sean. I
- 29:24Speaker 6: think it's apply pressure, but keep an eye on him
- 29:27Speaker 6: at the same time and don't let him do that
- 29:28Speaker 6: because he can equally make a play with his arm
- 29:31Speaker 6: down the field. And I watched Oklahoma State last week.
- 29:33Speaker 6: He's very good at scrambling and making plays. So it's
- 29:36Speaker 6: not like you could pick one or the other because
- 29:38Speaker 6: you're gonna hurt you both ways.
- 29:41Speaker 2: On the flip side offensively you can go strength versus
- 29:45Speaker 2: strength here you can run the ball against a really
- 29:48Speaker 2: solid houston run defense or you could trust the arm
- 29:52Speaker 2: of devon dampier and try to exploit their defensive weakness
- 29:56Speaker 2: which is of course their secondary And, you know, if
- 30:00Speaker 2: you run more, this game gets a little bit shorter.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Connor Wegman doesn't get as many offensive possessions. If you
- 30:06Speaker 2: trust Devin Dampier's arm, I mean, we've seen that go
- 30:09Speaker 2: well and not go so well. So philosophically for the
- 30:13Speaker 2: Utah offense, if you're making that decision, are you attacking
- 30:17Speaker 2: the defense with the pass or are you letting way
- 30:21Speaker 2: Sean Parker eat?
- 30:23Speaker 6: I think, to me, Houston's given up 265 yards a game. Now,
- 30:28Speaker 6: they've got a lot of PBUs, but the teams have
- 30:30Speaker 6: trailed against them, too. They've had to throw the football.
- 30:33Speaker 6: So I think that you trust your quarterback in Devin Vampir.
- 30:38Speaker 6: And I don't think going after them through the air
- 30:40Speaker 6: is a bad thing. Now, Houston can get after you
- 30:42Speaker 6: a little bit with the pass rush, too. But I
- 30:45Speaker 6: think that, you know, you figure out what you can
- 30:47Speaker 6: do early. If you do decide to throw the football early,
- 30:50Speaker 6: that might open things up for way Sean Parker a
- 30:52Speaker 6: little bit later. Houston's got a pretty good run defense.
- 30:54Speaker 6: They're only giving up about 82 yards a game. But, again,
- 30:57Speaker 6: teams have trailed against them, so they've had to throw
- 31:00Speaker 6: the football quite.
- 31:00Speaker 4: A bit more.
- 31:02Speaker 6: I'm not opposed to trust it because, again, there's so
- 31:05Speaker 6: many weapons you can utilize in that pass game. Pagan
- 31:09Speaker 6: and Johnson and Andrews and Bray and Parker out of
- 31:12Speaker 6: the backfield and Creed Whittemore is beginning to emerge, too.
- 31:16Speaker 6: I'm not opposed to letting Devin Dampier drop back and
- 31:19Speaker 6: throw just a little bit tomorrow night to test it.
- 31:21Speaker 6: But I don't think you're ever going to see this
- 31:23Speaker 6: Utah football team when you've got a back like Wayshawn
- 31:25Speaker 6: Parker completely and totally abandon the run.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Bill Riley for another minute or two here on the
- 31:32Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show, talking Utah versus Houston, college game day
- 31:36Speaker 2: in town.
- 31:37Speaker 1: And look, it's still an amazing thing. The novelty may have.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Worn off a little bit for a certain part of
- 31:43Speaker 2: the fan base because, you know, if you've been around
- 31:45Speaker 2: for 20, 30 years, you've seen this circus roll into
- 31:48Speaker 2: town now a half dozen times or more.
- 31:51Speaker 1: But it is still a big deal.
- 31:53Speaker 2: They were in Provo last week and The fanfare was
- 31:56Speaker 2: incredible and all that stuff. Game day being here again
- 31:59Speaker 2: for this particular matchup, how does the team handle it?
- 32:04Speaker 1: How does the fan base handle it?
- 32:06Speaker 6: I don't think it impacts the team in one way, shape,
- 32:09Speaker 6: or form because they're so isolated from it. Maybe you
- 32:12Speaker 6: see Nick Saban and Pat McAfee come into practice today
- 32:15Speaker 6: for a little while, and there's a little bit more
- 32:17Speaker 6: pomp and circumstance when you're turning on the TV in
- 32:19Speaker 6: the morning when you get up. For me, this is
- 32:21Speaker 6: more about the fans, but it's also about the program
- 32:24Speaker 6: and the university, John. You've got a three-hour infomercial tomorrow
- 32:27Speaker 6: from President's Circle showing off your university and your football program.
- 32:32Speaker 6: That's where this is a big deal. Fans will come up.
- 32:35Speaker 6: Fans will watch it on TV. But it's the people
- 32:37Speaker 6: around the country and around the conference that get exposed
- 32:40Speaker 6: not just to the Utah football program, but to Salt
- 32:43Speaker 6: Lake City, but to Rice-Eccles Stadium, but to the university campus. That,
- 32:47Speaker 6: to me, is where game day is such a huge deal.
- 32:53Speaker 2: How painful is the absence of Kelvin Obott? Given the
- 32:56Speaker 2: context of the rotation on the offensive line in those
- 32:59Speaker 2: first two or three games, he is out in this one.
- 33:03Speaker 1: How badly does that hurt Utah?
- 33:05Speaker 6: I mean, I think it only really hurts you if
- 33:08Speaker 6: you suffer another injury in his place because for the
- 33:12Speaker 6: first two or three games of this year, they were
- 33:14Speaker 6: rotating offensive linemen through. And a guy like Salato Amoyai
- 33:20Speaker 6: has played a ton for Utah. So I don't think
- 33:23Speaker 6: it's a huge loss. It's not, say, like maybe if
- 33:26Speaker 6: a guy like Zerway Williams or Cedric Jefferson, your edge guys,
- 33:31Speaker 6: your tackles would go down. Kelvin is a really nice player,
- 33:35Speaker 6: and he's only going to get better and better. But
- 33:38Speaker 6: Utah's got some pretty good depth, especially on that interior
- 33:41Speaker 6: offensive line. So I'm not sure that it's a huge
- 33:44Speaker 6: deal tomorrow night.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I'm calling a soccer game tonight, and.
- 33:50Speaker 3: You've done a lot of that. I know you told
- 33:51Speaker 3: me that.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I have not.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Bestow upon me your years of calling soccer wisdom so
- 33:58Speaker 2: I don't make a fool of myself.
- 34:00Speaker 6: Well, is this a radio or a television call?
- 34:04Speaker 1: Television call.
- 34:05Speaker 6: Okay, well, don't over-talk. That's what I would tell you because,
- 34:10Speaker 6: as you know, with your PFL experience, the pictures kind
- 34:14Speaker 6: of tell the story of it. So don't feel like
- 34:16Speaker 6: you have to fill a lot of time and a
- 34:18Speaker 6: lot of air time and things like that. Kind of
- 34:21Speaker 6: like let the pictures go and try to– who's doing
- 34:24Speaker 6: color with you tonight?
- 34:27Speaker 1: Carla, former BYU soccer player.
- 34:30Speaker 2: She's done a bunch of Royals stuff, done a little
- 34:33Speaker 2: ASL stuff as well.
- 34:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I've worked with Carla before.
- 34:36Speaker 4: She's great.
- 34:38Speaker 6: Um, let her be the star a little bit. She's
- 34:40Speaker 6: a former player. She was a pro. She was a
- 34:43Speaker 6: great collegiate player. She got a lot of broadcast experience.
- 34:47Speaker 6: You know, I always say this in radio, the play-by-play
- 34:50Speaker 6: guy or gal is the star in television. You're a
- 34:54Speaker 6: little bit more of a traffic cop and you turn
- 34:56Speaker 6: it over to your, your color analyst. So just kind
- 34:59Speaker 6: of sit back. Harlow's a pro. She's done a ton
- 35:02Speaker 6: of it and, uh, let the game come to you, Sean,
- 35:04Speaker 6: let the match come to you.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I think not over-talking is going to be the hardest
- 35:09Speaker 2: thing I've ever done. I love hearing the sound of
- 35:11Speaker 2: my own voice so much.
- 35:12Speaker 1: But it's good advice. I appreciate you giving it to me.
- 35:16Speaker 6: No problem. I'm anxious to hear how it goes.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Yeah, me too. Me too. We'll see.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Chief Seahawks, we've got that game on the station. And,
- 35:27Speaker 2: you know, your Chiefs looking really good. Not as good
- 35:29Speaker 2: as my 49ers, but still looking really good. Seahawks the
- 35:33Speaker 2: defending Super Bowl champs I think are still very much
- 35:36Speaker 2: in the mix although the NFC West maybe not as
- 35:38Speaker 2: tough as I thought it would be this year what
- 35:40Speaker 2: do you make of that game?
- 35:42Speaker 6: Should be a good game traveling halfway across the country
- 35:45Speaker 6: if you're Kansas City big test for them probably the
- 35:48Speaker 6: best test of the year I'd say so far luckily
- 35:52Speaker 6: the Chiefs don't practice next to a power station so
- 35:55Speaker 6: they're in pretty good shape I mean Brock Purdy may
- 35:58Speaker 6: be out for the game Sunday for all you know
- 36:00Speaker 6: but Yeah, I think it'll be a really good game.
- 36:04Speaker 6: Seahawks haven't been quite themselves, and maybe it's the Kenneth
- 36:08Speaker 6: Walker III revenge game because the Seahawks made no real
- 36:11Speaker 6: effort to resign him, and I'm not sure that that
- 36:14Speaker 6: sat well with him. So it should be fun. Seahawks'
- 36:18Speaker 6: defense is pretty good, especially up front. The Chiefs' offensive
- 36:21Speaker 6: line is still a little iffy with Josh Simmons not playing,
- 36:25Speaker 6: but I think it should be a fun and entertaining
- 36:28Speaker 6: game on Sunday night.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Don't you?
- 36:30Speaker 4: I do.
- 36:31Speaker 1: I really do. All right.
- 36:33Speaker 2: This conversation every week is brought to you by your friends,
- 36:36Speaker 2: my friends, Preston and Garrett Handy, HandyLawUtah.com. Big firm experience,
- 36:42Speaker 2: small firm attention. Tell the people what they need to
- 36:44Speaker 2: know about Handy and Handy.
- 36:47Speaker 6: Well, they're great personal injury attorneys, and they're great people, too.
- 36:51Speaker 6: What they're going to do is listen to you, your family,
- 36:54Speaker 6: your loved one, whoever that might happen to be that
- 36:56Speaker 6: might need their assistance. And then they're going to advise
- 36:59Speaker 6: you the best way they possibly can. So if you
- 37:02Speaker 6: need a personal injury attorney, I would highly recommend going
- 37:05Speaker 6: and talking to Preston and Garrett because they're great people
- 37:07Speaker 6: to do great work. You can find them online at HandyLawUtah.com.
- 37:11Speaker 6: And maybe more importantly, they've got so much experience in
- 37:15Speaker 6: their back pocket, they're not going to steer you wrong.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Can you ever have too much night game at Rice
- 37:21Speaker 2: Echo Stadium?
- 37:22Speaker 1: Is there ever.
- 37:24Speaker 2: A situation where, like, okay, these late kickoffs are– we've
- 37:27Speaker 2: had too many of them already this year.
- 37:30Speaker 6: No, at home, certainly not. I got home at 4.45
- 37:34Speaker 6: in the morning from beautiful Boulder, Colorado last week. That
- 37:37Speaker 6: was a bit much. But I'll be in my bed
- 37:40Speaker 6: probably 1.30, quarter of 2. I don't think so. I
- 37:45Speaker 6: love a good afternoon game, an early evening game. But
- 37:49Speaker 6: when it's a big game, and tomorrow night's certainly a
- 37:51Speaker 6: huge game, Houston's really good. You make a case, by
- 37:55Speaker 6: the time it all shakes out, they've got a chance
- 37:57Speaker 6: to play in the Big 12 championship game. I don't
- 38:00Speaker 6: think you can ever have too many big night games
- 38:03Speaker 6: at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The juice and the energy is just different.
- 38:08Speaker 2: We'll be there for the blackout. Bill, have a great
- 38:11Speaker 2: call tomorrow night. Thanks for joining me, as always.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Thanks, Sean.
- 38:14Speaker 6: I'll talk to you soon. Have a great call tonight.
- 38:17Speaker 2: That's Bill Riley, voice of the Utes, brought to you
- 38:19Speaker 2: by Handy and Handy. Go to HandyLawUtah.com if you have
- 38:24Speaker 2: any questions.
- 38:25Speaker 1: All right.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Nickelback is coming to the Delta Center April 22, 2027.
- 38:30Speaker 2: We're giving away a pair of tickets every day this week.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Topical trivia, I got an injury update for you next.
- 38:36Speaker 2: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700.
- 38:38Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 38:49Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Craig James, SMU legend,
- 39:07Speaker 2: is going to join us next. The Pony Express Award
- 39:10Speaker 2: hands out their award yearly to the top duos, offensive
- 39:14Speaker 2: duos in college football. Utah's got candidates with Devin Dampier,
- 39:18Speaker 2: Wayshon Parker, Devin Dampier, Braden Pagan. Same thing down at
- 39:21Speaker 2: BYU with some of their offensive stars. So Craig James
- 39:25Speaker 2: in just a couple of minutes here. Injury report brought
- 39:27Speaker 2: to you by the Advocates. Personal injury attorneys who have
- 39:32Speaker 2: recovered over 500 million dollars total for their clients and
- 39:37Speaker 2: probably most importantly they do not get paid unless you
- 39:39Speaker 2: get paid so if you've been in an accident a
- 39:42Speaker 2: scooter accident a bike accident an automobile accident a motorcycle
- 39:46Speaker 2: accident something has happened to you at work Contact the advocates, utahadvocates.com.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Tell them OC sent you. They only get paid if
- 39:55Speaker 2: you get paid. The consultation is 100% free. You have
- 39:59Speaker 2: access to their legal team, their attorneys, 24-7, 365. And
- 40:03Speaker 2: if you do have a case, they're going to let
- 40:06Speaker 2: you know. They're going to help you build that case.
- 40:08Speaker 2: They're going to be your partners in getting you the
- 40:10Speaker 2: compensation that you deserve. And it's not just one attorney
- 40:14Speaker 2: helping you out. It is their entire legal team helping.
- 40:17Speaker 1: A whole team.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Dedicated just to your case and at their disposal the
- 40:22Speaker 2: entire decades-long history of their attorneys to lend their expertise
- 40:31Speaker 2: on whatever your case actually is. UtahAdvocates.com. The injury report
- 40:39Speaker 2: for the University of Utah... And I kind of stick
- 40:43Speaker 2: with the guys who are out because the questionable usually
- 40:45Speaker 2: ends up being someone who can actually play. But the
- 40:49Speaker 2: guys that are out are the names that you already
- 40:51Speaker 2: know are out. Kelvin Obot is out. He is not
- 40:55Speaker 2: going to be playing in this game. I think that
- 40:57Speaker 2: is a decently significant loss. But thankfully they have depth
- 41:04Speaker 2: at an offensive line position that usually people don't have depth.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Jam Wallace is out. He's only played one game for
- 41:10Speaker 2: the team so far. We talked about his case yesterday.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Linebacker Preston Pitts also out. Corner JC Hart, who gives
- 41:18Speaker 2: you some good depth at that position and plays a
- 41:20Speaker 2: lot on special teams, he is out for this game.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Damarian Thomas, defensive lineman at Houston, one of their best
- 41:25Speaker 2: defensive linemen, is out. Also, linebacker Jaden Yates out. They
- 41:29Speaker 2: have four other guys who are listed as probable, and
- 41:32Speaker 2: in a game this important, the guys who are listed
- 41:34Speaker 2: as probable are going to play. LJ Martin is still
- 41:38Speaker 2: out for BYU. Kyle Svarchuk, their starting offensive guard is
- 41:43Speaker 2: upgraded to questionable for this one, but that's a long
- 41:49Speaker 2: trip to Orlando, Florida for the Cougs, so we'll see
- 41:52Speaker 2: how their lineup looks against UCF. LJ Martin being the
- 41:56Speaker 2: biggest absence there, but we just saw them beat Notre
- 41:58Speaker 2: Dame without LJ in the lineup, so I don't know
- 42:01Speaker 2: how much of a problem that is. I think the
- 42:03Speaker 2: biggest question for BYU is not a player personnel thing,
- 42:06Speaker 2: it's Do you have the emotional bandwidth to play just
- 42:10Speaker 2: as well against UCF as you did against Notre Dame?
- 42:14Speaker 2: And even if you don't, is UCF good enough to
- 42:16Speaker 2: take advantage of a mistake or two and maybe a
- 42:18Speaker 2: letdown game and beat you?
- 42:20Speaker 1: Because the talent disparity between.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Where BYU is at right now and where UCF is
- 42:23Speaker 2: at right now is fairly significant.
- 42:26Speaker 4: 801-355-5550.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Call the advocates if you've been hurt or And maybe
- 42:34Speaker 2: you're just curious whether or not you have a case.
- 42:37Speaker 2: You did not deserve to be in an accident. You
- 42:38Speaker 2: do deserve to have an advocate fighting for what you
- 42:42Speaker 2: get and what you deserve. Utahadvocates.com, 801-355-5550. Craig James joins
- 42:51Speaker 2: us next. We'll talk about the dynamic duo in the
- 42:55Speaker 2: Utah backfield and the dynamic duo of Devin Dampier and
- 42:59Speaker 2: Brayden Pagan.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Who thought?
- 43:01Speaker 2: That we'd be talking about an elite wide receiver at
- 43:04Speaker 2: Utah football.
- 43:04Speaker 3: Isn't it nice?
- 43:06Speaker 2: Hour two next on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700
- 43:09Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM. We don't need no education.
- 43:15Speaker 5: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 43:18Speaker 5: best inside of your youth. Let's get back to OC
- 43:21Speaker 5: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 43:28Speaker 4: No dark sarcasm in the classroom.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Coming at you from Smith's Marketplace. Just west of Redwood
- 43:43Speaker 2: Road on 90th South. Come get some Taffy Town Taffy.
- 43:47Speaker 2: The gift cards and the tailgate passes and the game
- 43:49Speaker 2: tickets have all been claimed. But I still would love
- 43:52Speaker 2: to chat with you, have you come by. Say hello
- 43:55Speaker 2: before we get ready for a big Utah versus Houston matchup,
- 43:58Speaker 2: college game day in town. And this Utah team is
- 44:02Speaker 2: going to lean heavily on an offensive combination of Devin
- 44:06Speaker 2: Dampier and Way Sean Parker joining us to talk about
- 44:09Speaker 2: that and much more in the college football world. The
- 44:13Speaker 2: SMU legend, Craig James, kind enough to join us. NFL veteran,
- 44:17Speaker 2: longtime commentator. Great to have you on the show, Mr.
- 44:21Speaker 1: James. How are you?
- 44:23Speaker 7: I'm great, Sean. Thank you very much for having me.
- 44:25Speaker 7: I am pumped to watch this game this weekend. I mean,
- 44:29Speaker 7: Utah and Houston is going to be outstanding. It's one
- 44:31Speaker 7: of those games I wish I could be at.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Well, we'd love to have you come here to Salt
- 44:35Speaker 2: Lake City sometime soon, Craig, but if you don't mind,
- 44:39Speaker 2: I want to pick your brain a little bit about
- 44:41Speaker 2: kind of like a big picture question we have with
- 44:43Speaker 2: this Utah football team right now. 6-0, ranked number 10
- 44:47Speaker 2: in the country. Struggled a little bit with the Colorado
- 44:50Speaker 2: team that I don't think really should have caused them
- 44:52Speaker 2: any problems last week. But in those six games, it
- 44:56Speaker 2: feels like this Utah team hasn't played anyone even near
- 44:59Speaker 2: the caliber of Houston. So you've been through this at
- 45:03Speaker 2: every level of football. Halfway through a season with this
- 45:07Speaker 2: level of success and still not knowing 100% what you're
- 45:12Speaker 2: made of, what kind of dynamic does that create with
- 45:14Speaker 2: the coaching staff in this locker room Because you're going
- 45:17Speaker 2: to find out against Houston.
- 45:20Speaker 4: Oh, no question.
- 45:20Speaker 7: Houston is a good football team. But I think, Sean,
- 45:23Speaker 7: what we're finding in this new era of transfer portals
- 45:27Speaker 7: and stuff is that we don't really know who has
- 45:30Speaker 7: what until probably the middle of the season. And now
- 45:34Speaker 7: here's Utah, and this is a team that has everything
- 45:37Speaker 7: that looks great on paper. They're doing great with the
- 45:40Speaker 7: win chart. Now they're going to find out against a
- 45:42Speaker 7: good football team really who they are. And we've seen it,
- 45:46Speaker 7: the parity around college football. I was texting with Rhett Lashley,
- 45:50Speaker 7: the SMU coach, after the game last week and congratulating him.
- 45:54Speaker 7: And he just said, man, it's hard to win. And
- 45:56Speaker 7: it's true. It's hard to win football games on Saturdays
- 46:00Speaker 7: in college football nowadays. You just don't know who's going
- 46:03Speaker 7: to show up or not show up. And so this
- 46:06Speaker 7: is one of those telltale games for Utah and for Houston.
- 46:09Speaker 7: And I look forward to seeing it.
- 46:13Speaker 2: You're spearheading this effort on the Pony Express Award, and
- 46:17Speaker 2: I love the concept of where we're talking about not
- 46:20Speaker 2: just giving the honor to a person, an individual, a
- 46:23Speaker 2: wonderful quarterback.
- 46:24Speaker 1: A great wide receiver.
- 46:26Speaker 2: There's already awards for that, and there has been for
- 46:28Speaker 2: a really long time. The Pony Express Award decorates the
- 46:32Speaker 2: best dynamic duo, the best pair of teammates. In 2024,
- 46:37Speaker 2: Shador Sanders, Travis Hunter. Last year, and Utah fans are
- 46:41Speaker 2: going to be a little triggered by this. Jacob Rodriguez
- 46:44Speaker 2: and David Bailey, two defensive dynamos for Texas Tech that
- 46:48Speaker 2: made everyone in the Big 12's life miserable. If you
- 46:51Speaker 2: don't mind, take me behind the thought process of this
- 46:54Speaker 2: award and making sure that we have something unique, even
- 46:57Speaker 2: in the long line and the long history of trophies
- 47:00Speaker 2: handed out in college football.
- 47:02Speaker 7: Well, Sean, you know, Eric Dickerson and I were considered
- 47:05Speaker 7: the pony express at SMU, and our friendship that has
- 47:09Speaker 7: endured for nearly 50 years now, we got together and
- 47:11Speaker 7: started talking about an award that would recognize teamwork and
- 47:16Speaker 7: athletes who come together to make the team better. And
- 47:19Speaker 7: sometimes you have to be selfless in that activity, and
- 47:22Speaker 7: especially today in this world. We look at it as
- 47:26Speaker 7: kind of a we award in a me era award.
- 47:30Speaker 7: And it's really nice to be able to see and
- 47:32Speaker 7: reflect that that combination, like you mentioned, the two linebackers
- 47:36Speaker 7: last year at Texas Tech, they were voted on and
- 47:39Speaker 7: the award is voted on by current players from around
- 47:41Speaker 7: the country. And that's an honor. When I was voted
- 47:45Speaker 7: for the Pro Bowl in the NFL, and Eric as well,
- 47:48Speaker 7: you know, it came from the players. It meant a
- 47:50Speaker 7: lot to us. We feel like being able to find
- 47:54Speaker 7: the combination, the pairs, the duos out there. It could
- 47:58Speaker 7: be two safeties, two corners, two linebackers as it was
- 48:00Speaker 7: last year. And then you've mentioned here that Devin Dampier
- 48:05Speaker 7: and Wayshon Parker, Braden Pagan, he's in the mix. He's
- 48:09Speaker 7: also in consideration. So we're trying to find out, is
- 48:12Speaker 7: it Parker Pagan?
- 48:14Speaker 4: Which one is that?
- 48:16Speaker 7: This is the time of the year where the watch
- 48:18Speaker 7: list begins to whittle down because we can see who
- 48:21Speaker 7: the real combinations are out there.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I also love the fact that you do ask players
- 48:27Speaker 2: to vote on this. When Utah was in the Pac-12,
- 48:30Speaker 2: I loved the Morris Award, which is the offensive lineman
- 48:34Speaker 2: in the league and the defensive lineman in the league
- 48:36Speaker 2: cast a vote on who made their life most miserable.
- 48:39Speaker 1: It's an award that you.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Don't want to be giving to somebody else, but it's
- 48:42Speaker 2: an ultimate respect thing in my opinion. when you can
- 48:45Speaker 2: earn an award that is based on by your peers,
- 48:48Speaker 2: by your opponents, by your enemies, because they don't want
- 48:50Speaker 2: to honor you that way, but they just have to acknowledge, man,
- 48:53Speaker 2: this is the best dynamic duo.
- 48:55Speaker 1: I love that. I wish there was more of that, honestly,
- 48:58Speaker 1: in all.
- 48:58Speaker 2: The pre- and post-season awards that we keep handing out
- 49:00Speaker 2: to people because, look, I'm just a media guy now,
- 49:04Speaker 2: but I think a vote coming from me means a
- 49:06Speaker 2: lot less than a vote coming from an opponent that
- 49:09Speaker 2: you dominated in a game.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Well, but you know what, Sean?
- 49:12Speaker 7: You played and I played, and so we have a
- 49:15Speaker 7: feel for how hard it is to be a really
- 49:18Speaker 7: good player. But when you have the current guys that
- 49:21Speaker 7: are out there that have actually gone against some of
- 49:23Speaker 7: these players voting on the award, I think that's really
- 49:26Speaker 7: a good thing.
- 49:26Speaker 4: We've also– we're.
- 49:27Speaker 7: Adding a Legends of College Football Selection Committee, a part
- 49:31Speaker 7: of this committee. Marcus Allen, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, that
- 49:36Speaker 7: are going to be a part of the voting process
- 49:38Speaker 7: this year as well. So we're really trying to have
- 49:42Speaker 7: experts who appreciate what a tandem does for a team
- 49:47Speaker 7: and the teamwork in this era. Eric and I say
- 49:49Speaker 7: many times now that had we had the transferability back
- 49:53Speaker 7: in our time, one of us would have transferred. We
- 49:55Speaker 7: wouldn't have had to stick it out. And so we
- 49:58Speaker 7: fought through it, and because of that, it pushed each other.
- 50:01Speaker 7: We pushed each other, became better players. The team benefited
- 50:05Speaker 7: from it, and I think we did too long-term.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Craig James is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 50:11Speaker 2: Show talking about the Pony Express Award where Devin Dampier,
- 50:15Speaker 2: Braden Pagan, and Way Sean Parker, all in consideration for
- 50:19Speaker 2: the best, most dynamic duo ever. in college football down south.
- 50:23Speaker 2: You've got some guys from BYU who are also in
- 50:26Speaker 2: this conversation, and we just saw a really impressive performance
- 50:30Speaker 2: for Bear Bachmeier without L.J. Martin, who is last year's
- 50:34Speaker 2: best player on the team, Offensive Player of the Year
- 50:36Speaker 2: in the Big 12 Conference, and BYU got the win
- 50:39Speaker 2: without him in the lineup, and a lot of that
- 50:41Speaker 2: was the heroics of Bear Bachmeier, who scored on a
- 50:44Speaker 2: passing touchdown, on a running touchdown, and on a receiving touchdown.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Your thoughts on that win for BYU? And on Bear Bachmeier,
- 50:51Speaker 2: I mean, he might win the Dynamic Duo Award just
- 50:53Speaker 2: by himself, Craig.
- 50:56Speaker 7: There's the Bear and the Bear Bachmeier. I tell you,
- 51:00Speaker 7: I was glued to the TV watching that game. For me,
- 51:03Speaker 7: Bear Bachmeier is really all about college football. He exemplifies
- 51:09Speaker 7: what the heartbeat of it has meant for all of
- 51:11Speaker 7: these years. And there are a number of really good
- 51:14Speaker 7: players there. And it's just a matter of who's going
- 51:16Speaker 7: to team up with him and be the tandem and
- 51:18Speaker 7: the duo that represents BYU. They've got good linebackers on
- 51:21Speaker 7: that team. There are a lot of good combinations. and
- 51:24Speaker 7: so it's fun to watch them, but especially Barrett. His mentality,
- 51:28Speaker 7: the attitude that he has, it's contagious to the team,
- 51:32Speaker 7: and it was fun to watch.
- 51:34Speaker 2: I think talking to someone from SMU about this kind
- 51:38Speaker 2: of thing is probably right, because there's been this overwhelming
- 51:42Speaker 2: sentiment and maybe momentum in college football toward the SEC
- 51:47Speaker 2: and the Big Ten kind of controlling everything and and
- 51:51Speaker 2: boxing out teams, even really, really good teams in the
- 51:54Speaker 2: Big 12, and Notre Dame gets to be at the party,
- 51:57Speaker 2: but does SMU, oh, Miami gets to be there, but
- 52:00Speaker 2: does the rest of the ACC get taken quite as
- 52:02Speaker 2: seriously as everyone else? And obviously, being from the University
- 52:06Speaker 2: of Utah and watching their journey through the Pac-12 and
- 52:09Speaker 2: now in the Big 12 that have always been kind
- 52:11Speaker 2: of the also-ran sort of power conferences, I just wanted
- 52:15Speaker 2: your thoughts on the overall balance and the power structure
- 52:19Speaker 2: right now in college football as we're moving towards a
- 52:22Speaker 2: 2014 playoff now that it seems like nobody wanted and
- 52:26Speaker 2: you know the access to it should be increased but
- 52:28Speaker 2: is it only increased for the aforementioned big 10 and
- 52:31Speaker 2: the sec as a guy who came from a quote-unquote
- 52:35Speaker 2: smaller conference school i imagine your thoughts on it may
- 52:39Speaker 2: be similar.
- 52:39Speaker 1: To mine but i don't want to put words in
- 52:40Speaker 1: your mouth.
- 52:42Speaker 7: Yeah, no, probably so. I don't think the respect is
- 52:45Speaker 7: there that Utah deserves or an SMU. And, you know,
- 52:49Speaker 7: the big guys for years were the dominant guys out there,
- 52:52Speaker 7: Ohio State and Georgia and Alabama. And they were really
- 52:56Speaker 7: good teams. And we're not taking anything from them. But
- 52:58Speaker 7: you mentioned the word balance. And, Sean, that to me
- 53:02Speaker 7: is where right now the unknown, the parity, the balance
- 53:05Speaker 7: in college football is. is giving a chance to the
- 53:08Speaker 7: Utahs and the BYUs and the SMUs. They're named schools,
- 53:14Speaker 7: and they're really good schools, but it's like the SEC
- 53:18Speaker 7: and the Big Ten own everything, and I don't like
- 53:21Speaker 7: that part of it. And so, therefore, with the transfer
- 53:24Speaker 7: world that we have and the balance that is in
- 53:27Speaker 7: college football right now, It does give the chance for
- 53:31Speaker 7: if you have the 2014 playoffs for a 20th seeded
- 53:35Speaker 7: team to be a Cinderella. Not likely, but it's possible.
- 53:40Speaker 4: And I don't know.
- 53:41Speaker 7: I was an AP voter for a long time. And
- 53:45Speaker 7: on Sunday morning of this past weekend, I kind of
- 53:49Speaker 7: put my mind to it trying to think of what
- 53:51Speaker 7: would my ballot look like.
- 53:53Speaker 4: And it's really hard, really hard.
- 53:55Speaker 7: I used to know for sure the top three or
- 53:56Speaker 7: four or five teams, and then there were six through 12,
- 53:58Speaker 7: and then after that it was just throw them up
- 54:01Speaker 7: in the air. And I think we're in that throw
- 54:03Speaker 7: them up in the air era right now of college football.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Which I love. I love the unpredictability of it.
- 54:09Speaker 2: I love the fact that we can roll into a
- 54:11Speaker 2: weekend like we did last weekend and six of the
- 54:13Speaker 2: top ten teams are going to go down and an
- 54:15Speaker 2: unranked team is going to beat the number one team
- 54:17Speaker 2: in the country. That's part of what we love. about
- 54:20Speaker 2: college football, and I don't want that to go away.
- 54:23Speaker 2: And I know that, look, it's still a wonderful product.
- 54:25Speaker 2: It's still a great game, and there's a lot of
- 54:27Speaker 2: people who in the last few years, especially since the
- 54:30Speaker 2: transfer in NIL reality became harder to follow, there's some
- 54:34Speaker 2: people who are getting jaded to it and it's putting
- 54:36Speaker 2: a bad taste in the mouth. My question for you
- 54:39Speaker 2: is can we ever put that genie back in the bottle?
- 54:41Speaker 2: Is there a time, whether it's because of the Protect
- 54:43Speaker 2: College Sports Act passing or some similar legislation or maybe
- 54:47Speaker 2: the powers that be just get together and and make
- 54:50Speaker 2: reasonable decisions, are we ever going to get back to
- 54:52Speaker 2: a place where it's like, hey, you can transfer penalty-free,
- 54:55Speaker 2: but you can only do it one time.
- 54:57Speaker 1: You're going to get five years to play. You're going
- 54:59Speaker 1: to get NIL opportunities.
- 55:00Speaker 2: But it's not going to be pay-for-play, you know, this
- 55:04Speaker 2: 17-year-old high schooler who's been given $ 2 million or $ 3
- 55:06Speaker 2: million to commit to a certain place. Can we unring
- 55:09Speaker 2: the bell, or is this just the world we have
- 55:11Speaker 2: to live in from here on forward?
- 55:14Speaker 7: Now, the bell's rung. Jeannie did leave the bottle, and
- 55:17Speaker 7: you can't put her back in there. And I feel
- 55:20Speaker 7: like what we can do, though. is to try to
- 55:24Speaker 7: put some common sense guardrails around it. I'm okay with
- 55:29Speaker 7: most of what they're proposing, save and accept. If you're
- 55:33Speaker 7: going to restrict the amount of money that a player
- 55:35Speaker 7: can make, then you've got to do the same thing
- 55:38Speaker 7: to a college coach. Be balanced. If one gets limited,
- 55:43Speaker 7: the other one gets limited. I do like the one-time
- 55:47Speaker 7: transfer rule, the five-for-five. I guess I'm okay with that.
- 55:51Speaker 7: But the players have been floating these ships for years,
- 55:56Speaker 7: and I'm happy that the players are being compensated for it.
- 55:59Speaker 7: Ninety-nine percent of them will never play in the NFL.
- 56:02Speaker 7: These are their earning years. And so I think there's
- 56:06Speaker 7: good that's happening with it, and maybe, Sean, it does
- 56:10Speaker 7: create a new world of rankings out there so that
- 56:15Speaker 7: the smaller schools, the non-Big Ten and SEC powerhouses have
- 56:20Speaker 7: a chance. People will see how good Utah is. They're
- 56:23Speaker 7: going to see how good BYU is. They're going to
- 56:25Speaker 7: recognize that SMU, oh, you know what? They did wander
- 56:27Speaker 7: in the wilderness for 40 years, but they're back now,
- 56:30Speaker 7: and they can play. And so... I love the Big
- 56:33Speaker 7: 12 right now. It's a strong conference, and people are
- 56:37Speaker 7: going to see that. When Utah and Houston take the field,
- 56:40Speaker 7: that's going to be two offenses going at each other.
- 56:43Speaker 7: It's going to be fun to watch.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Craig James for another minute or two here on the
- 56:47Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show. Who's been the biggest surprise team for
- 56:51Speaker 2: you in college football this year, whether on the positive
- 56:54Speaker 2: or on the negative? I mean, Oregon was talking national
- 56:57Speaker 2: championship and can hardly get out of their own way.
- 57:00Speaker 2: And there's been a few surprises up and down.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Which one has stood out most for you?
- 57:05Speaker 7: Well, that's a good one there, Oregon, as a surprise.
- 57:08Speaker 7: And it shows you how you just don't know. I
- 57:13Speaker 7: was watching several quarterbacks. Unless you have a Trinity Chambliss.
- 57:18Speaker 7: for instance, at Ole Miss, who's just a difference maker.
- 57:22Speaker 7: Watching Josh Hoover play last week for Indiana, he's a
- 57:25Speaker 7: good quarterback, but he's not Mendoza. So if you don't
- 57:30Speaker 7: have that trigger guy, you're having a hard time being
- 57:34Speaker 7: one of the top two or three teams. And I
- 57:36Speaker 7: think the schools who've struggled, I'm surprised at Texas. Texas
- 57:42Speaker 7: has so many players. And here they are, you know,
- 57:45Speaker 7: win big and then go lose to two unranked teams,
- 57:48Speaker 7: two good unranked teams. But I think Texas and Oregon
- 57:52Speaker 7: probably have surprised me as much as anyone.
- 57:57Speaker 2: You just gave a nod to the Big 12 Conference.
- 58:00Speaker 2: Is this a year where we can finally, I don't know,
- 58:02Speaker 2: expect is a weird word to use, but that we
- 58:05Speaker 2: can hope for at the very least multiple Big 12
- 58:08Speaker 2: teams in a college football playoff? I mean, there's several
- 58:11Speaker 2: games left to play. But BYU's number two with a
- 58:14Speaker 2: huge win over Notre Dame. I think they can afford
- 58:17Speaker 2: to lose one, maybe two, and still be considered strongly.
- 58:20Speaker 2: If they don't win a Big 12 championship, and that's
- 58:22Speaker 2: Texas Tech or Utah or Houston, they obviously get an
- 58:26Speaker 2: automatic bid. But maybe a one-loss Tech or a one-loss
- 58:29Speaker 2: Utah or whatever, do they get consideration? Because so far,
- 58:33Speaker 2: the Big 12 has been sent the message, hey, your
- 58:35Speaker 2: champion gets in and nobody else.
- 58:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's terrible.
- 58:39Speaker 4: It's terrible.
- 58:40Speaker 7: I was disappointed last year that Miami got in. They
- 58:43Speaker 7: couldn't even win their own conference. Didn't mean they weren't
- 58:45Speaker 7: a good team. And here we are looking at the
- 58:48Speaker 7: Big 12, and your question, Oklahoma State's a good football team.
- 58:51Speaker 7: Surprise me. They're one of my surprise teams. Mestemaker is
- 58:55Speaker 7: really a good quarterback, and they're doing a good job there.
- 58:59Speaker 7: The Big 12 should have a minimum of two teams,
- 59:02Speaker 7: and there are three or four teams that are knocking
- 59:05Speaker 7: on the door right now. If it ended today, there
- 59:08Speaker 7: would probably be four teams that are in there. and BYU, Utah,
- 59:12Speaker 7: they're absolutely in the mix.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Are coaches.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Safer now because of the cost of doing business in
- 59:22Speaker 2: college football? Before NIL and before this arms race in
- 59:26Speaker 2: revenue share and paying your player, these athletic departments– Basically,
- 59:29Speaker 2: if they were going to flush money, it was going
- 59:31Speaker 2: to be on coaching contracts. And so schools were fine
- 59:34Speaker 2: with paying these enormous buyouts. Or alumni bases, you could
- 59:37Speaker 2: make a phone call to your billionaire donor, and you
- 59:40Speaker 2: could say, hey, we've got to get rid of this guy.
- 59:43Speaker 2: And if they agreed, they were willing to cut that check. Well,
- 59:46Speaker 2: now they've already cut checks to make sure you've got
- 59:48Speaker 2: the right offensive tackle and the right.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Quarterback and the right corner and everything else.
- 59:53Speaker 2: And, you know, the hot seat in college football is
- 59:55Speaker 2: always firing up right around now. But are these coaches
- 59:59Speaker 2: in 2026, are they safer than they've been in recent
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: years because it's already so expensive and they've got such
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: big buyouts and most programs can't afford it?
- 1:00:12Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: I'm not so certain they are safe right now. Mike Loxley,
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: you know, listening and watching his press conference, I mean–
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: Mike Locksley is a good coach, and Maryland fires him.
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: But he admitted, you know, I didn't adjust. I couldn't
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: make it happen with the NIL and the transfer world
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: here at Maryland right now. To much is given, much
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: is expected. And a lot of these egos who are
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: giving the money to Texas and Texas A & M
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: and the big schools that are giving the money, they
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: expect a return on their money. And the egos that
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: they possess is substantial. I think Steve Sarkisian is a
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: good football coach, but he's playing Ole Miss this weekend.
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: Can you imagine if Texas, with.
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: A $ 50.
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: Million roster, has three losses in a row? I don't
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: think that's forgivable. They're given a lot of money to
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: go perform. But it is really hard to determine if
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: you bring a guy in. Underwood at Michigan, I mean,
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: when they got $ 12 million invested in the guy reported,
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: a lot of money. And he's not the guy. And
- 1:01:22Speaker 7: so all of a sudden, you know, Michigan's, okay, they're struggling.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: So it's just you've.
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: Got to have the right guy at quarterback and the
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: supporting cast beneath him. And it's turning more into the
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: football or the NFL model than we've ever seen it before.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Well, you just brought up Underwood, and obviously that's a
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: story that Utah fans follow closely because Kyle Whittingham was
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: here for 21 years.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: He took the Michigan job.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: He took great players and coaches with him. And the narrative,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: whether it's correct or not, was that he's not allowed
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: to take Devin Dampier with him, thank goodness. He's not
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: allowed to take Bert Ficklin with him, thank goodness for us,
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: because Michigan has already invested in their guy. And whether
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: or not a head coach like Kyle Whittingham wanted Bryce
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Underwood to be his guy, I don't know the true
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: answer to that or not. It seems like the salary
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: that a player is being paid now factors in. Like
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: you said, at the NFL level it does, and now
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: it's factoring in in college football.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Craig, I'm not so sure that that's good for coaches.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: I'm not so sure that that's good for college football,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: and it's certainly not for guys like I used to
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: be on a roster that are buried on the depth chart,
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: and if you had any hope of mobility upward and
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: getting some playing time, you're not getting that now when
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: the guy above you at the top is making a.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Million bucks and they can't waste that money. I don't know.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: I don't know that this is good for college football
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: to have salaries be such a part of coaching decisions,
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: if they are.
- 1:02:44Speaker 7: Yeah, and they are. Obviously, he inherited that, and he
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: had to deal with it. It's almost like the personnel department.
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: I know they're all trying to hire these personnel guys,
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: and they have the general managers of these big schools.
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: They're evaluating the talent. Well, just because you have the
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: title of a general manager, do you really know who
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: can play? I mean, that's a very specific talent to
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: be able to look at an 18-year-old or a 19-
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: or 20-year-old and determine whether or not he can be
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: your quarterback or your left tackle or your linebacker or
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: your great running back. And so they may be hiring
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: these general managers, but, man, you know, when you make
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: a misfire on an Underwood, which has happened, boy, that's
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: detrimental to the program because you've got a lot of
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: money invested in that guy, and you've got to live
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: with it. And, you know, obviously it's one of those
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: deals they're going to try to overcome it, but it's
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: a challenge.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Before we let you go, the Pony Express Award given
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: out to the best dynamic duo in college football offensive
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: or defensive side of the ball doesn't matter devon dampier
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: braden pagan way sean parker all in consideration here as
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: are a couple of byu guys how can listeners here
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: how can fans here get behind this support the initiative
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: make it a bigger thing because like we already said
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: at the beginning of this conversation i love the concept
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: of not just giving it to an individual but recognizing
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: teammates and what they do for each other and for
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: their overall program how can we support the pony express.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: Award Oh, man, thank you, Sean.
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: You know, Eric and I are brothers in Christ, and
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: we will live in eternity together in heaven. And we
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: now want to recognize the guys that are coming through
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: the ranks right now and that are playing. We have
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: a PonyExpressAward.com site. You can follow us on social media, Instagram, X.
- 1:04:39Speaker 7: You know, we're starting to produce more content. This is
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: our third year of doing this, and we're trying to
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: take measured steps to make sure the award is solid.
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: and people getting behind it. We've had numbers of schools
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: where they've gone on and they repost the content that
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: we put out there, and that's the best way to
- 1:04:59Speaker 7: do it. And we really appreciate you letting us come
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: on and talk about it, and we look forward to
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: seeing how all these players respond.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Well, appreciate you giving us some time today to keep
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: up the good work. Hopefully we'll have you on again
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: sometime soon, Craig. Thanks very much.
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: Thank you, Sean.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: And you guys have a great weekend.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: It's going to be a fun one up at Rice
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Echo Stadium tomorrow night, 8.15 kickoff, blackout game, college game
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: day in town. So if you're a Utah fan, you're
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: committed tomorrow. 7 a.m., you've got to go up to
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: President's Circle. You've got to be loud and proud and
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: ready to make some noise in support of your Utes.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: And then, you know, schedule in a nap time, maybe
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: around lunch, a little siesta, and get out there to
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Rice Echo Stadium before kickoff, well before kickoff.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Make that place loud and crazy. When they get rolling.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: And while you're doing all of that, make sure that
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: you are supplied with the best, cleanest, healthiest meat in
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: the business from Southern Steer Bushers.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: 1705 North Redwood Road.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: It's about 20 minutes, 25 minutes from where I'm sitting
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: right now. 35-ish minutes from downtown Salt Lake City down
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: in Saratoga Springs. It's worth the trip. You can make
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: a phone call at 801-895-3101. Here's what I want you
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: to do.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Go down.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Tell Dan and Aubrey that, you know, you got the smoker,
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: you're ready to fire it up, you're going to be
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: there early for college game day, so you're waking up
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: at 5 a.m.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: You want something you can put on the smoker and
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: just have it there all day. So when you come
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: back for 5 p.m. dinner time, maybe you go back
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: at 4 p.m., you pack it into a cooler, you
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: let the brisket rest, whatever, you haul it up to
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: the tailgate at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Tell them you want something
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: you don't have to think about. You've already invested all
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: of your emotional intelligence in getting ready for this huge
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: game for Utah as they host Houston, number 10 versus
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: number 14 in the country. You've got to have a
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: meal that matches a game like that. So go down
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: there and say, hey, just take the work out of
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: it for me. What should I get? They're going to
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: hook you up with the marinated steak tips. They've got
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: the pre-made sides. They can get you the potato salad.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: They can get you the exact marinades and rubs and
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: everything you need. They can say, all right, trim this
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: much off this brisket, throw it on at this temperature
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: for this long, and by the time you roll out
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: of that college game day atmosphere and you get back
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: home hungry, it's going to be perfect for you.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: They've got the brats. They've got the dogs. They've got
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: the burgers.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: They've got every single thing you need, and it's ethically sourced,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: and it's not full of the chemicals. It's not full
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: of the hormones at some of these other places where
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: you're picking up your meat. Southern Steer Butcher, the best
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: in the business. Tell them OC sent you at 1705
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: North Redwood Road.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: 801-895-3101.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: It's a modern take on the old neighborhood butcher shop,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: and they do everything so incredibly well. Give it a
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: shot down there in Saratoga Springs. 1705 North, Redwood Road.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: The Daily Dump is next. It's the Sean O'Connell Show

- 1:08:44Speaker 2: We got cleaned out on the gift cards and the
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: tailgate passes, but we'd love to see you throw up
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: a go, Utes, and let's talk about it. Let's start
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: the Daily Dump brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: and Cooling. Look for the truck with the duck for
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: all of your home improvement needs. all those fixes, the
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: drain cleaning, the excavation. They really can handle it all
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: for you. We'll start with the PGA Tour leaderboard update
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: here in the Daily Dump down at the Bermuda Championship.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Leaderboard updates are brought to you by Uinta Golf, by
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Worldwide Golf. In-store, they've got free custom fittings. Add you
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: into golf, or you can shop online at worldwidegolf.com.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Get there.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: What's going on in Bermuda, James, or do we even know?
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: Because they might be lost. They could be lost. Some
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: guys are losing. I'll say that. There's only one winner, right?
- 1:09:35Speaker 8: Let's see.
- 1:09:37Speaker 9: Kensei Harada, Korean. He is tied for first with Chandler Blanchett.
- 1:09:44Speaker 9: Or Blanchette, maybe. Maybe got a relation to the wonderful
- 1:09:49Speaker 9: actress there. They're at 13 under. They're at the top
- 1:09:52Speaker 9: of the leaderboard. Seamus Power is in a group tied
- 1:09:55Speaker 9: for third at 12 under. One shot off the lead there.
- 1:10:00Speaker 9: Tied for sixth. Two shots off the lead at 11 under.
- 1:10:03Speaker 9: David Skins and Denny McCarthy. And then rounding out the
- 1:10:07Speaker 9: top ten, we've got the Smotherman, Austin Smotherman, Grayson Sig,
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: Ben Coles. Tied for ninth at ten under. Tony Finau
- 1:10:19Speaker 9: not playing in this tournament, but Zach Blair is. He
- 1:10:24Speaker 9: was off to a great start, if you remember, OC, yesterday.
- 1:10:27Speaker 9: He's not quite as good today. He's still got a
- 1:10:31Speaker 9: few holes left. He just threw ten holes here. One
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: under for the day after starting the day at six under.
- 1:10:38Speaker 9: So he's dropped down the leaderboard. He was top ten yesterday.
- 1:10:41Speaker 9: He's tied for 27th now at seven under, but he's
- 1:10:43Speaker 9: still got basically the whole back nine to try to
- 1:10:46Speaker 9: make up some ground. So that's our Utah guy, Zach Blair.
- 1:10:50Speaker 9: Still going to play the weekend, it looks like, but
- 1:10:52Speaker 9: not quite doing as well as he did yesterday.
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: But time to make up ground.
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: That's your PGA Tour leaderboard update from the Bermuda Championship
- 1:11:01Speaker 9: brought to you by Uintah Golf.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: They've got spooky good bag savings right now. At Uinta
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Golf on the golf bags. So if you're looking for,
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: you know, a present, Christmas is not that far away.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Or maybe you just want to take something extra special, trick-or-treating.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: You could fill a whole golf bag with candy. That'll
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: last you the year. Spooky good savings at Uinta Golf
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:11:25Speaker 9: Can you imagine having a golf bag? You know, the
- 1:11:28Speaker 9: pillowcase always felt like the hack. Fill up the pillowcase,
- 1:11:32Speaker 9: ride his kids. Imagine having a golf bag. to fill
- 1:11:36Speaker 9: up your candy going trick-or-treating.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: In that case, you're going to need one of those
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: little wheelie things, right? Because if you fill that up
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: with candy, it's going to be heavy.
- 1:11:44Speaker 9: Yeah, like a 10-year-old trying to lug that thing around
- 1:11:47Speaker 9: without the wheels.
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: Yeah, that'd be funny to see.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Utah Jazz home opener tonight versus the Pelicans.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: It's the first regular.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Season game in the newly renovated Delta Center. We've seen
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: what that looks like for hockey. We have not had
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: a regular season basketball game there. So I know they
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: had the open practice and they've had some preseason, but
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: now they're doing it in earnest against the Pelicans. It's
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: got to be a better game for the Utah Jazz
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: than their opener against Memphis on the road where they
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: lost by 20.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: But, you know, We're only two games in. James, are
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: you going to get a chance to go out to
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: this one?
- 1:12:28Speaker 8: I'm going to this one.
- 1:12:29Speaker 9: Excited to see what the basketball setup looks like with
- 1:12:34Speaker 9: half of the upper bowl newly renovated with the gondola seating.
- 1:12:39Speaker 9: It looks so great at hockey games. You and I
- 1:12:42Speaker 9: have both seen that. Can't wait to see what it
- 1:12:45Speaker 9: looks like in jazz games. And then hopefully, I mean,
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: they made me look like an idiot when I said
- 1:12:50Speaker 9: good Good news, this is going to be a blowout
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: win to start the season. They get blown out instead.
- 1:12:55Speaker 9: Hopefully they can make me look a little better tonight.
- 1:12:59Speaker 9: The Pelicans are not a good team, but they've got
- 1:13:01Speaker 9: some talent when they're healthy. So this is not a
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: game that you could really let up here. You're going
- 1:13:07Speaker 9: to have to play your best to beat the Pelicans tonight,
- 1:13:11Speaker 9: and hopefully they get that done.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: World Series game one also tonight. Tampa Bay at Milwaukee.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Coverage begins at 5, first pitch at 6 on your
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: home of the Major League Baseball postseason. Mizorowski thrown, is
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: that right, for the Brewers? So if you want to
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: know what a 104-mile-an-hour fastball looks like, that's your guy.
- 1:13:36Speaker 9: Well, and true to form with recent postseasons, really every
- 1:13:41Speaker 9: postseason in the last 10 to 12 years, the headline starters,
- 1:13:45Speaker 9: the stars that you expect like the Miz, Jacob Mizorowski,
- 1:13:51Speaker 9: you go in expecting him, okay, maybe they're going to
- 1:13:54Speaker 9: go six or seven innings. He's going to be over 105, 104,
- 1:13:58Speaker 9: 105 miles an hour the whole time. It's going to
- 1:14:00Speaker 9: be really exciting. He's going to shut them down. But
- 1:14:03Speaker 9: then the Miz is like most of the headline starters, again,
- 1:14:07Speaker 9: of the last 10 to 12 years, barely getting through
- 1:14:10Speaker 9: four innings. So we'll see if they can get some
- 1:14:12Speaker 9: length out of him, but also.
- 1:14:14Speaker 9: That's not that big a deal to teams anymore because
- 1:14:17Speaker 9: they'd rather go to their bullpen early because they like
- 1:14:20Speaker 9: their high leverage guys just going one inning at a
- 1:14:23Speaker 9: time for like four or five innings. So I like
- 1:14:26Speaker 9: the old school, like let's have the starter dominate, especially
- 1:14:30Speaker 9: if they're as talented as the Miz, but we'll see
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: how it goes. He's not had the greatest postseason. What
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: better time than the World Series to try to turn
- 1:14:39Speaker 9: that around?
- 1:14:40Speaker 8: And the Rays... Really good team.
- 1:14:42Speaker 9: Like, the Brewers getting all the headlines because they haven't
- 1:14:44Speaker 9: been here in forever, and they've had the best record
- 1:14:48Speaker 9: in the majors all year long. They just beat the Dodgers,
- 1:14:51Speaker 9: a juggernaut, right, back-to-back defending champions. But I've been saying,
- 1:14:56Speaker 9: whoever won out of the AL, it's going to be
- 1:14:59Speaker 9: like the Spider-Man meme, looking in a mirror at the
- 1:15:03Speaker 9: Brewers because the Rays and the Brewers play basically the
- 1:15:07Speaker 9: same game. They want good starting pitching. They have a
- 1:15:10Speaker 9: lockdown bullpen. They've got two great managers. They don't strike
- 1:15:13Speaker 9: out a lot. They put the ball in play. They
- 1:15:15Speaker 9: do a little more small ball, less home runs. So
- 1:15:18Speaker 9: I think this is going to be a really tight,
- 1:15:21Speaker 9: it could be a really exciting series starting tonight.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: I will be keeping an eye on the ratings, television
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: ratings for this series because Major League Baseball is... probably
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: going to go on tampa versus milwaukee but there is
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: that if you're a baseball fan you're going to watch
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: the world series so like i don't know i mean
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: it's not going to be yankees dodgers type numbers but
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: i think that it's a world series this is like
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: the casual baseball fan and i've slid further and further
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: into that category as i've aged but the casual baseball
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: fan this is the only baseball you watch this is
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: the only time you turn in for the fall classic
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: anyway um There are now five undefeated teams left in
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Division I football, including Utah and BYU. Heading into last night,
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: there were six, but James Madison was upset by a 4-2,
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: now 5-2, Appalachian State team, 34-31, and they fall out
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: of the top-ranked group of six school plays. That's Boise State, who,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: of course, has occupied that spot in college football many,
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: many times now. They are a one-loss, highly-ranked group of
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: six team, but that improves Boise State's playoff case if
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: James Madison is not undefeated. Of course, James Madison making
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: it all the way through would have put them into
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: the college football playoff most likely, but the Dukes upset
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: by App State last night, and App State just loves
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: pulling off upsets, man.
- 1:16:55Speaker 8: Yeah, they do.
- 1:16:56Speaker 9: Obviously, the Michigan one now about 20 years ago, they,
- 1:17:00Speaker 9: they beat Texas A & M a few years ago.
- 1:17:02Speaker 9: And I think Jimbo Fishers last year, um, and they
- 1:17:07Speaker 9: were Texas A & M was ranked.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: At the time.
- 1:17:09Speaker 9: They obviously didn't finish that season ranked hence the coaching
- 1:17:12Speaker 9: state coaching change, but yeah, they.
- 1:17:14Speaker 8: They love to make these upsets.
- 1:17:15Speaker 9: This is not quite as high profile cause it's a
- 1:17:17Speaker 9: team also in the Sunbelt, but, uh, it's not one
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: of the five undefeated teams in college football and a,
- 1:17:24Speaker 9: and a playoff team last year out of the Sunbelt.
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: So yeah, just another upset for app state. Uh, The
- 1:17:30Speaker 9: weird thing, James Madison, one of the six undefeated teams
- 1:17:34Speaker 9: in college football going into last night's game, yet unranked
- 1:17:38Speaker 9: in the AP poll. Boise State, the only group of
- 1:17:41Speaker 9: six team ranked at this time.
- 1:17:46Speaker 8: And they had the one loss.
- 1:17:47Speaker 9: It's probably because they showed really well for themselves against Oregon,
- 1:17:51Speaker 9: a power four team who had playoff aspirations at the
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: beginning of the season, right? But Again, great news for
- 1:17:59Speaker 9: Boise State that maybe their biggest rival in the group
- 1:18:04Speaker 9: of six range for a playoff spot this year has
- 1:18:08Speaker 9: a loss this early in the season.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: So we've talked about Connor Hellebook more than we'll ever
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: talk about another team's goalie. He demanded the trade from Winnipeg.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: Turns out he actually demanded a trade, asked for a
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: trade from Winnipeg. quietly behind the scenes a long time ago,
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: made it public and got suspended for it earlier this year.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: His suspension ends today. And Winnipeg decided since that marriage
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: is over that they had to move on from him.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: And you heard Buffalo was very, very interested. You heard
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: that the Mammoth were involved in some trade talks that
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: would bring Connor Hellebuck in, the former Vesna Trophy winner.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: The U.S.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Gold medalist, wanted to get out of Winnipeg. And he's
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: out of Winnipeg. He's going to the New Jersey Devils.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: And what the New Jersey Devils gave back for Connor
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: Hellebuck in.
- 1:19:05Speaker 10: This one, it indicates to me that I don't think
- 1:19:10Speaker 10: the Utah mammoth ever really wanted him that bad because
- 1:19:14Speaker 10: I thought that even with very little leverage, the way
- 1:19:18Speaker 10: that the Winnipeg jets kind of stood pat and weren't
- 1:19:20Speaker 10: just entertaining any offer to, to unload him.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: I thought that the price would be a little bit
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: higher than this. Winnipeg gets Nico Dawes or excuse me.
- 1:19:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: They get Nico Dawes goaltender from, from New Jersey, uh,
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: Forward Dawson Mercer, Nick Bukestad, who's a great player but
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: is on the wrong side of 33 now. A 2026
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: first-round pick named Alexander Command, which is just an elite name.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: And a seventh-round pick in 2027. A second-rounder in 2029. So, look, that's,
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: you know, that's one guy in Connor Hellebook. One goalie
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: who is... maybe past his very best, and you're getting
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: a lot back. Let's see, that's one, two, three, that's
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: six guys. But when you look at the production of
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Dawson Mercer, when you look at what Nick Bukestad is now,
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: not what he used to be, and obviously they think
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: highly of this Alexander command, and who knows what a
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: seventh-round pick looks like next year and what a 2029
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: second-rounder looks like. I mean, you can't even project out
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: that far if you have a brain like mine. This
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: is not a prohibitively expensive ask, and it's a price that,
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: to be kind of simplistic about it, Utah could have
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: paid had they wanted to bring Connor Hellebuck to Salt
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: Lake City. Ultimately, he's headed to Jersey, though. He reunites
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: with Jack Hughes, who he played with on Team USA,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: and the Hellebuck saga in Winnipeg ends this way with
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: him going to the New Jersey Devils. and the Devils
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: getting a bunch back, but more just like bodies and filler.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: You're trading away a potential league-best star goaltender for.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Bodies. Winnipeg didn't have a ton of leverage here, I guess. Also, I.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Guess I failed to appreciate the real reason behind why
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: Connor Hellbook wanted out of Winnipeg. Go read the articles, man. Like,
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: after he won an Olympic gold medal for Team USA,
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: he was not being treated very nicely in Canada, which
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: is crazy because, you know, Canadians are supposed to be polite.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: All right, we've got to take another break. Lee Sterling
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: is going to join us next, number one handicapper in
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: the business to pick the games of the weekend. And
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: then we've got Coordinator's Corner with Colton Swan shortly after that,
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: airing of Grievances coming up at 1.30 p.m. It's a
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Friday show, Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. If
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: you're listening.
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: To the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for the best
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: youth football coverage, here's O.C. from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: 800-400-9741, ParamountSports.com.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: That's how you get a hold of our next guest,
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: Lee Sterling, best handicapper in the business. If you're looking
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: for college football picks, pro picks, maybe you like to
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: play the ponies with the MMA world, the fight world
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: like I do, Lee Sterling of Paramount Sports. That's your guy.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: He joins us every Friday. He's with us now.
- 1:22:55Speaker 7: Hi, Lee.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: How are you, sir?
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: I'm good. I'm real good. Someone just called and asked
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: if I do Premier League soccer. I'm like, don't you
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: think I'm busy enough this time of year with baseball, hockey,
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: and basketball? So I've actually gotten a couple calls. There's
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: actually a possibility next year we might be doing soccer.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: You've got a UFC card coming this weekend. You've got
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: a full slate of college football. You've got the NFL.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: You've got the World Series tonight. You've got regular season
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: NBA basketball back. Lee, put some more stuff on your plate,
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: would you?
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: Okay, no problem.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the picks this week. Last
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: week was a wild one in college football, and I
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: don't know if that can happen two weeks in a row,
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: but maybe more upsets Bruin. Let's talk about a Texas team,
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, Arch Manning, back against the wall, and yet
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: still three-and-a-half-point favorites against Ole Miss.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: How do you see it?
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: I can see a scenario if– they fall behind this
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: Texas team. And I'm not talking about like, you know,
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: 20 to 14 or something like that. But if they're
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: down like 14-0 or 20 to 7, I think there's
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: a real possibility they're going to replace Arch here. So
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: they also got problems on the defensive end because Colin
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: Simmons may be the best defensive player in college football,
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: over 30 career sacks, only eight and a half sacks
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: the last year. three weeks. He's out for this game.
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: So Ole Miss is one of those teams coming out
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: of the bye week. They have been on fire, destroyed.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: Bandy up 42-3 at the half there. Shut down a
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: hot Missouri team. They got Kawan Lacy back now. He
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: got nicked up in the first half, came back and
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: played the entire second half. They got maybe the best
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: quarterback in college football. If he was two inches taller,
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: he'd be going top two, top three in the draft here.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: Wrong team favored, Ole Miss straight up 26-20. All right, I.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Think I agree with that one. Last week, BYU pulled
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: off one of the biggest wins in program history, at
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: least as far as the regular season is concerned. Game
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: day in town, Notre Dame. Number two-ranked team in the
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: country at that moment, and boy, did BYU take care
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: of business. Without L.J. Martin, they found a way to win,
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: and it came down to that very last play. Now,
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: forgive me. I hope you'll indulge me here. Pass interference, Lee.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: One second left on the clock.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: Or should we let it lie as it was?
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: Obviously, nothing's going to go back and change that, but
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: what was the correct football call there?
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: Well, interference first. He was mugging the guy. And second off, yeah,
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: there was one second to go. So give, though, BYU credit.
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: They were right there, and you can't let it come
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: down to one play. But I do think that they
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: should have made the call for interference. But that being said, BYU,
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: you've got to give these kids credit. They play hard. And,
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: I mean, their quarterback is not going to be denied– Now,
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: most people love UCF. I'm seeing right now over 71%
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: of the money is coming on UCF. The problem I
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: can't back them is their starting quarterback, Alonzo Barrett, from
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: James Madison, it looks like will not play. If he
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: doesn't play, and Keon Jenkins is a starter, he just
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: doesn't impress me either way, running or throwing very much.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: And how about this, Scott Frost? since day one at
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: Nebraska and now through his one-and-a-half seasons in the second
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: tenure at UCF. I mean, backing him is like setting
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: your money on fire here. I think BYU will find
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: a way to win and cover 28-20.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Six-and-a-half-point favorites are the BYU Cougs in that one. We'll
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: get to Utah-Houston, save the best for last. So jumping
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: into the NFL, the Rams, the preseason Super Bowl favorites,
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: they've had their struggles. They are four-point favorites overall.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: Against the Raiders.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: And if you had shown somebody this line in the preseason,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: they would have laughed at you.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: But the Rams have been worse than we thought. The
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: Raiders have been better than we thought. How do you
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: see this game?
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: So the Rams right now, I mean, injury-wise, I mean,
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: they're starting to almost resemble the Philadelphia Eagles. So they're
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: taking injuries at wide receiver, one of their best two
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: wide receivers done for a long time. They got some
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: injuries all along the defensive line, three out of four
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: starters done for a while. And then, you know, a linebacker,
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: a secondary, that special teams are a mess here. The
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: Raiders are literally like one or two plays every game
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: away from winning. So I think they're starting to put
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: it together here. I think the running game is starting
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: to come around and If they can pound the ball
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: and if they can take the lead, look out here.
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: Rams could be sitting at 2-5. Yeah, another wrong team favored.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: I like the Rams to pull the upset here 24-21.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: Seahawks Chiefs defending Super Bowl champs. The Chiefs is still
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: the Chiefs apparently and perhaps a Kenneth Walker revenge game
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: because Seahawks didn't seem to do much to keep him around.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: But the Birds are favored. Two and a half points
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: in this one. Do the Chiefs pull it off?
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: I think the Chiefs are up against it.
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: Why?
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: I think this is a must game here for Seattle.
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: They lose this game. They can pretty much kiss trying
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: to win the division goodbye. So they've got to win
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: this game here. San Francisco is starting to run away
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: with it. The Chiefs, they're undefeated. If they lose this game,
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: not that big a deal. It's not a division game.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: Their big game is next week. against Denver. So Seattle's
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: going to be game planning to stop Kenneth Walker. They
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: know him inside and out. I see some weaknesses in
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: this Chiefs team. I mean, they've got one receiver. That's it.
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: The rest of the other guys, these are guys they
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: picked up, guys that were on the practice squad. You know,
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: they're winning games like 19-3, 22-6 on field goals, and
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: now they're field goal kicker. He's leaking oil, so I
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: just can't back him here. If Sam Darnold could just
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: figure it out somewhat and not throw two or three interceptions,
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: I think they're the right side. Tough place to play, too.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: You're always going to get three, four, five illegal procedure
- 1:29:19Speaker 3: calls on offense. Just too loud there. So let's go
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: with Seattle. They win and cover 27-17.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: The game of the week, Broncos, Cards, and the Broncos
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: are favored 4.5.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: Yep. Anyone wants to get it for free. How about this?
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: I don't like this game. I love this game. I
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: think there's a clear right side. So if you want
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: to get this huge game, Broncos and Cardinals, just call 800-400-9741.
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: I'm going to give it to you for free. So
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: you want to get what I call a max wager release.
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: Broncos and Cardinals, call that number right now, 800-400-9741. 9-7-4-1.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: And I came up with an idea. I'm like, you know,
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: I know there's people that are doing football, UFC, maybe
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: a few doing a few other sports, but not enough
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: people doing most of them because we're winning at every
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: single sport. So came up with this first time ever
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: in 34 years. It's a promotion called the Super 7.
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: Seven days, I'm going to give you every selection in football, basketball,
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: and Baseball World Series, hockey, the UFC, the card from
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: Abu Dhabi is stacked, and we have two max wagers,
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: a 40 and a 50 unit play there included with
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: the seven plays, and all my player props for the
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: World Series, college football, and NFL. Seven days, it would normally,
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: if you bought everything individually, over $ 750, just $ 157. You
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: want to give us a try, good time this weekend.
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: Seven-day offer, the Super 7, just one place, ParamountSports.com.
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: All right, that brings us to the game of the week.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: College game day decided they wanted to stay in the
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: state of Utah back-to-back weeks.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Last week, Provo.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: This week, Salt Lake City, I drove past the campus
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: and saw the setup earlier this morning, Lee. Utah, six
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: and a half point favorites against the number 14 team
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: in the country in Houston. I really like Wegman. This
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: feels like a big number for me, but tell.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Me what you think.
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: I think game day is going to be lit. I mean,
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: I thought BYU, I thought the fans showed out, and
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: I think it's going to be as good or better
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: tonight this weekend, so wish I was there, but got
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: to be in the home office this weekend. But when
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: I look at this game, I think Utah's good, but untested. 6-0,
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: 5-1 against the spread. Haven't had the toughest schedule here.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: Now had to come back against Colorado, had to pour
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: on late against Iowa State and Kansas. Houston's played a
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: much tougher schedule. Now you look at their wins against
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: Oregon State. And Oklahoma State, those are quality wins. And
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: just that two-point miss at Texas Tech.
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: Talk about Connor Wegman.
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: He was not the guy at Texas A & M. But, boy,
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: is he coming on right now. I mean, last two
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: weeks played great. And 20 touchdown passes and six rushing
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: touchdowns this year. And Houston plays their best ball on
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: the road here. 6-0 against the spread the last six
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: on the road. And they have weapons everywhere. all over
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: the field. I think Utah is going to escape here, 31-28.
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: Devin Dampier just will will his team maybe to win it,
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: but six and a half. This feels like one of
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: those games, last team with a ball win. So I'm
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: going to take the six and a half, but I
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: can see Utah eking out a 31-28 win.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: Well, I don't need him to cover. I just need
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: him to win this one and prove to 7-0. But, yeah,
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: Houston's a good team. Also, Wegman, he doesn't turn the
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: ball over. You mentioned his touchdowns. He's only thrown two
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: interceptions this year, Lee. The kid can play football.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: It's wild.
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, the green light has come on. We talk about
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: that all the time with quarterbacks, and when a quarterback
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: finally gets it, and I think he feels finally comfortable
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: in his own skin. He's bounced around. He's had a
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: bunch of different coaches and coordinators, but I think right now,
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: I think he's playing great, and I think he's going
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: to be playing in the NFL. Maybe not as a starter,
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: but at least as a backup for many years to come.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Lee, enjoy the weekend. We'll chat again next week. Thank you, sir.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: Okay. See you, buddy.
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: Take care. 800-400-9741, ParamountSports.com. Lee Sterling, best in the business.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: I like that seven-day, seven-sport thing that he's doing.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: That's kind of cool.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: Gets you sprinkled in across the NHL, Major League Baseball, NBA,
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: little combat sports, and, of course, college football and the NFL.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: He thinks that Utah wins, but Houston covers. That's fine
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: by me. Colton Swan is going to join us next,
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Coordinator's Quarter, brought to you by Mountain Home Services, the D.C.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: And we prerecorded this conversation.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: I want you to listen when we get to the
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: point where we're talking about strategy and managing the number
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: of possessions because I think that comes into play and
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: is a big part of either winning or not against Houston.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Colton Swan next.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: It's the Sean O'Connell Show coming at you live from
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: Smith's Marketplace in West Jordan, Utah. ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: Let's dive into this week's matchup in the coordinator's corner
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: of the Sean O'Connell Show. OC chats with the coordinators
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: every week of the Utah football season. On your home
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN 700
- 1:34:51Speaker 5: and 92.1 FM.
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: Here on the Sean O'Connell show where we catch up
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: with one of the coordinators at the university of Utah
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: this week. It is defensive coordinator Colton Swan anticipating a
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: game day matchup against Houston. Looking back at a tough
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: one in Colorado, all of that and more here in
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: coordinator's corner brought to you by mountain home services on
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: Colton Swan. Welcome back. How are you, sir?
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: Good OC.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: How are you doing? All right, man.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: It was, it was a tight one in that second half,
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: especially against the Colorado Buffaloes.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Let's look back at it. Let's talk about it. What
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: were you seeing?
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: What were your guys seeing out there that made that
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: third quarter a little bit nerve wracking for all of
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: us watching?
- 1:35:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: And it's, we've got to find a way defensively to
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: close people out. You know, we'll have really good three
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: quarters in a game and then there will be a
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: quarter here and there that, you know, we are giving
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: up more than we want to. You look at like
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: the first half and I think they had 70 total
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: yards of offense. you know, zero points and stuff like that.
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: And you're sitting there going, so you got to, as
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: a coach, you're sitting there going, okay, is our mentality
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: changing on the defensive side? Is the lack of motivation,
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: you know, what's, what's causing this. So you try to
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: internalize that and figure out what's going on. And, and
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: you know, we've got to, we've got to be able
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: to close people out. You know, when you got them down,
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: you got to be able to hold them down and,
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: and keep them there. And so that's one thing that
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: we've really stressed and talked to the guys and, this,
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: this week and looking at it and review, I don't
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: wouldn't say it's anything that like Colorado, you know, threw
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: at us.
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: There was a few plays here and there that, okay,
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: they beat us on that. They beat us on that.
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: But majority of those explosive plays that happened in that
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: second half where things of, you know, that we let
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: them have, you know, not covering a guy here, you know,
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: not combo incorrectly here, not doing the things that we
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: should have done better and things that I felt like
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: we gave them rather than, you know, them taking from us.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I want to stay focused on the
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: fact that you guys won the game still undefeated, right?
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: 6-0 heading into a big matchup against Houston. And I
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: know that as a coach, it's hard to kind of
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: enjoy the journey while you're in it. There's so much
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: hard work involved. And even for players, that can be
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: the case. You know, what was the played ride? Like,
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: what was the, you know, the first meeting after that
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Colorado game, like for you and your guys, because it
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: was a win, but because the standard is, has been
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: set so high and the expectations are what they are.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: It feels like even the fan base didn't enjoy this
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: win for what it was a win.
- 1:37:44Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: That's very interesting, isn't it? Because you do, you get
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: used to winning and you get used to the expectation
- 1:37:51Speaker 4: and you get all these things. And so when it
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: doesn't come to fruition, you're like, it almost feels like, OK,
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: that was a letdown because we didn't kill him how
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: we thought we were going to kill him. You know,
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: we won, but we didn't kill him like we wanted to.
- 1:38:05Speaker 7: And so.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: It's a, it's a balancing act. It's a fine line
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: and it's, you know, that's the frustrating part is, is yeah,
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: you didn't play up to your expectations. You got the wind,
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: but you know, you want to, you want to, as
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: a coach, you want to do a great job of
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: sitting there going, okay guys, we won, but here's where
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: we can be better. And, and so, yeah, you're right. The,
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: the mojo and all that, the feel after the game was,
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: was not, like it should have been. And I think
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: our guys really understood that they watched the film and
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: they saw that, Hey, we didn't play as well as
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: we should have. And so I think the same Testament of,
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: you know, the, the mojo and the juice and energy
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: wasn't there with them as well.
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: We did see in this game a couple of timely
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: plays made on the offense and by your defense as well.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: When it got tight and when things maybe were a
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: little bit dicey, you know, Bobo came up with a
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: big interception. Creed Whittemore came up with a couple of
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: big catches. And I know it was far from perfect,
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: but for me as an observer, there's a silver lining
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: to be found in the fact that guys were making
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: plays when they had to make the plays, even if
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: it was nerve wracking and even if it got closer
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: than we wanted it to be. ultimately some big plays
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: were made in order to keep this on the right
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: side of the wind column.
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:39:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: That's, and that's huge. And when you're in those meetings
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: after the game with the defense, you're sitting there and going, okay,
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: these are the things we fixed, but look at what
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: we did do.
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: We play like this all the time. You're holding the
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: 70 yards and zero points in the first half, like,
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: like things like that. And, and that come up clutch
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: in big moments, like the interception that bubble had. I mean, that,
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: that was, that was a game changer. And so yeah,
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: you got to do a really good job of, you know,
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: not only teaching and coaching, but also freaking giving praise
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: when it's due and making sure the positivity is there
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: or else, you know, you do hang your head on
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: a win. And college football is hard, as you know, OC.
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: And you definitely want to have the mentality of when
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: you win, it's positive and it's good. And, you know, hey,
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: let's fix the things we've got to fix, but let's
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: move on as well.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: Rabbit Evans also with an interception in this game, and
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: we did because you're at the halfway point six games in.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: We did the lazy sports talk radio thing yesterday, and
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: I said, all right, who's the offensive MVP? Who's the
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: defensive MVP? Who's the breakout player to this point? And
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: Rabbit Evans, it was decided by the fan base, at
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: least the one that listens to my show, that Rabbit
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: Evans was your defensive MVP so far this year. And
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: I'm not going to ask you to name one individual player,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: but with respect to Rabbit, When you evaluate his play
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: and you see what he has done week in and
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: week out, is he at least in that conversation inside
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: the building as well as with the fan base?
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: No, no doubt. Yeah. From, you know, a coach's standpoint
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: and a coordinator's standpoint, he's, man, is he a guy
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: that he's got really good instincts. Excuse me. He, you know,
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: has the ability to find the ball. Whether he is
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: scraping on a fourth and one and, you know, fourth
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: and goal at the one, and making a tackle or
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: whether it's a seam route by the tight end in
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: the Colorado game, or, you know, just play after play
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: this kid makes he's got great vision, great instincts, and
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: he's doing a lot for us, you know, defensively he's
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: a utility knife as all those safeties are. But he does,
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: he does a ton of stuff for us. He can
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: play in the post. He comes down in the box. Uh,
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: he's very multiple in his, his style and, and man,
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: I couldn't agree with you more as far as just
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: what he's doing for our defense.
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: How did your, uh, your defensive front, how'd your defensive
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: line grayed out against Colorado? Much has been made of
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: the numbers associated with pressure and sacks and things like that.
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: Morgan gave a really thoughtful answer to a question about
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: it at his press conference.
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you heard that.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: Talking about how quickly the ball is getting out from
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: some of these opposing quarterbacks and things like that. But,
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: you know, we lose sight of some of the details
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: as fans and you just want big sacks and big
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: numbers like that.
- 1:42:13Speaker 8: But I'm asking you both.
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: I'm asking you with the whole picture in mind, how
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: those how that defensive front graded out.
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: Speaker 4 0 1 0. You know, first off Colorado's
- 1:42:25Speaker 4: offense line is really good, really talented players. I thought
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: that our defensive line played really well in all things considered,
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: you know, stopping the run, being able to defend the path,
- 1:42:38Speaker 4: stuff like that. I will say the ball, you know,
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: teams versus us, maybe because we are a high pressure team.
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: Like you look at Um, you know, our total calls
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: throughout the third down control down, stuff like that. Uh, we,
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: we are very high in our pressure rate, if that
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: makes sense. And so teams are, I think seeing that
- 1:42:57Speaker 4: and their max pro on, you know, they're not six
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: man pro and just with the old line in the back.
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: or scatting with that. They're, they're leaving a tight end
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: and we're seeing a lot of slide protections with seven
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: and sometimes eight man protections we saw versus Kansas. So
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: I think teams are really kind of sitting there going, okay,
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: this team pressures a lot. How can we combat that?
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: And we're getting a lot of, a lot of max
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: pro we're getting the ball out quite a bit. You know,
- 1:43:23Speaker 4: like you said, you know, do you and I want
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: more sacks? Absolutely. You know, we are doing some really
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: good stuff. We're getting our hands on the ball at
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: the line of scrimmage a lot, you know, when those
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: balls are coming out quick. But yeah, we got to be,
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: we got to continue to find ways to get to
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: the quarterback. That's the number one thing is being, you know,
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: disrupting him. and, and just be creative and, and having,
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: you know, guys turn loose, whether it's, you know, defensive ends,
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: D tackles, linebackers, just guys having the ability to get
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: to them.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: You defensive coordinator, Colton Swan is my guest here on
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell show coordinators corner brought to you by
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: our friends at mountain home services every single week. So
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: now we turn the page as an undefeated six and
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: O top 10 team in the country and rice Eccles
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: stadium night game. Again, this one will be a blackout.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: College game day in town, and it's a No. 14-ranked
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: Houston Cougars squad. The toughest test of the year on paper.
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: I think in a practicality, also probably the toughest test
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: of the year. And they do some really nice things offensively.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: They've got an excellent quarterback. So tell me what you're
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: seeing from Connor Wegman and all of his teammates in
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: that Houston offense.
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: Yeah, they do. They do a great job. Like you
- 1:44:34Speaker 4: mentioned already, they are extremely balanced. They've got, you know,
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: multiple plays from certain looks and just, you know, they
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: provide a lot of complex looks that can really kind of,
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: you know, look the same to a defender and they're
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: giving you a different type of play. the quarterback really
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: runs this offense. He could get rid of the ball
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: in the throw game really, really fast. I mean, I
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: don't know if we've faced the quarterback so far that,
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: you know, you look at the times of throwing the ball, he,
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: I mean, this kid gets rid of the ball really well.
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: So he knows where he wants to go with it.
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: He got to do a great job in disguise and
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: coverages because he has got a wealth of knowledge and picking,
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: you know, coverages apart. And, you know, the offensive line,
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: they run the inside and outside zone better than probably
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: we've faced anybody so far. And they work really well together.
- 1:45:28Speaker 4: They got really good backs. They got a kind of
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: lightning in the bottle type of running back. And then
- 1:45:33Speaker 4: they've got a bigger back that, you know, will hit
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: it downhill. I think the tight end that they got
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: is a very athletic guy, maybe one of the better
- 1:45:42Speaker 4: tight ends we've seen. So, you know, from an offensive standpoint,
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: really well balanced, well rounded. They run their system extremely well.
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: And like I said, everything kind of the focal point
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: is around that quarterback. He knows exactly what to do
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: with that ball. So it's a good challenge for us
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: and looking forward to it.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: Obviously you got to call your game and run your stuff,
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: but how much adjustment is there with respect to a
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: quarterback with his level of experience, his talent, things like that?
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: How much do you have to alter your game plan
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: based on the player personnel you're facing?
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: You definitely got to have an idea of what you
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: want to do from a coverage standpoint and trying to
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: throw a little bit of confusion his way, giving him
- 1:46:28Speaker 4: pre-snap looks, post-snap looks, moving your safeties around, moving your
- 1:46:35Speaker 4: corners around, definitely moving the front. So there's a lot
- 1:46:39Speaker 4: of adjustment going on. It's a fine line. Like I said,
- 1:46:42Speaker 4: you don't want to– Do too much of it or
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: you're tricking yourself. You've got to be able to align
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: and execute, and that's the number one thing in defense.
- 1:46:52Speaker 4: If you can get all 11 guys executing at the
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: same time, doing the correct thing, the odds of winning
- 1:46:59Speaker 4: drastically increase. And so it's a fine line in going
- 1:47:04Speaker 4: too far and trying to make things look, you know,
- 1:47:08Speaker 4: one way or trying to trick him. But game plan-wise, yeah,
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: you definitely have to, especially with a veteran quarterback like.
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: He is, Is there a magic number?
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: I'm looking at what Houston does offensively, and they're right
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: behind Utah with 39.3 points per game. When you watch
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: their film, do you say, all right, if we can
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: hold them to 27 instead of 39, we're going to
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: win this one? Is there anything like that in an
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: analytical numbers approach for you when you're calling this defense?
- 1:47:39Speaker 4: Well, I mean, we have our goals of, you know,
- 1:47:41Speaker 4: points per drive. What we look at from a defensive standpoint,
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: you know, a game from a defensive standpoint, an offense
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: that has the opportunity to score 10 times is going
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: to be different than our offense as an opportunity to
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: score 15 times. you know, so we look at how
- 1:47:58Speaker 4: many points we give up per drive is what we
- 1:48:01Speaker 4: looked at. We're always trying to stay around that 1.7
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: points per drive. And so, you know, if you're looking
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: at 10 drives, you're looking at 17 points, right? Because
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: sometimes an offense can have the ball and it fluctuates,
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: but on average from around.
- 1:48:17Speaker 7: 10 to 50.
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: So that that's kind of what we look at. But
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: when you look at total points, cause sometimes, you know,
- 1:48:24Speaker 4: when if you're looking at it statistically, like they're scoring,
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: you know, 39 points per game, well, their defense might
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: be accounting for you know, seven to 14 of those
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: points or whatever, if they're getting, you know, interceptions for touchdown,
- 1:48:37Speaker 4: stuff like that. So that's kind of why we look
- 1:48:41Speaker 4: at points per drive because it really isolates, you know,
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: what we do defensively. But the key is, yes, we
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: got to play team football defensively. we got to hold
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: them obviously to a manageable score that our offense can trumpet,
- 1:48:57Speaker 4: you know? And so, you know, if we're giving up
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: 40 points, you know, to Houston and our offenses happen
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: to score that much, it turns into a shootout and
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: the likelihood of winning is minimal. So you definitely want
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: to keep, keep an offense like this, you know, in
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: a low point region.
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: With that in mind, with the measurement being points per drive,
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: rather than just points per game, do you ever, walk
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: over to Mac G's office and say, Hey, can we
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: give them like two fewer drives this game?
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: Can we run the ball a little bit more?
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: Can we, can we see your coach, man? It's all
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: about time of possession. Exactly. Elongating those drives, you know,
- 1:49:35Speaker 4: not given obviously their offense and short field positions. stuff
- 1:49:39Speaker 4: like that. Like, you know, we've, we've had to defend
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: a couple of red zones where we're starting off in
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: the red zone and it's like, okay, if we can
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: hold them to a field goal, you know, that's, that's
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: the goal is, is obviously not giving up touchdowns in
- 1:49:51Speaker 4: the red zone. And so it's, it's, you're absolutely right. It's,
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: it's making, you know, an offense have to drive the
- 1:49:58Speaker 4: length of the field. It's making them to where they're
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: not getting into the red zone, stuff like that. So,
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: There's a, there's a lot that goes into that metrics and, and, um, you're,
- 1:50:07Speaker 4: you're exactly right. If the offense can hold onto the
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: ball for a long period of time, that minimizes the
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: amount of drives that they get and the opportunities of
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: them scoring.
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: You guys have done a good job.
- 1:50:17Speaker 8: Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: When, when you are put in a situation where you're
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: on a short field, uh, you know, there's, there's been
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: your defense, your defense is bowed up and they've made
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: plays and they forced field goals or even three, you know, even, uh,
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: forced turnovers on downs or things like that. Uh, How
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: do you coach those scenarios? I know it's practiced, but
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: when it happens in a game, how do you coach
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: those scenarios to the level of success that you guys
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: have right now?
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: A lot of what we focus on is mentality. I
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: would say, because a lot of people don't want to
- 1:50:50Speaker 4: be in those situations. And we call it firefighter mentality.
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: We associate it when something bad is happening and, you know,
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: the building's on fire and everybody's running out of the
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: building to get away from the danger, to get away
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: from danger. you know, something catastrophic that's happening.
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:51:09Speaker 4: And we're the firefighters that are actually running into the
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: building to save people, to save the situation. And so
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: we have that mentality is like, Hey, we want this. We,
- 1:51:19Speaker 4: this is on us. This is what we signed up for.
- 1:51:22Speaker 4: We signed up to defend a short field. We signed
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: up to defend, you know, offenses in the red zone.
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: Like this is, this is our job. This is our duty.
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: And I think when you start with that type of mentality,
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: they sit there and say, okay, we're going to win.
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: We have no choice. We're going to win. And so
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: just coaching to that mentality says a lot. And, you know,
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: guys executing. That's the biggest thing in defense. If you
- 1:51:47Speaker 4: can focus for six seconds and every all 11 guys
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: doing their job and focus for six seconds of every play,
- 1:51:54Speaker 4: then the opportunity to win grows immensely. And so that's,
- 1:51:59Speaker 4: that's really what I mean, you look at that second
- 1:52:01Speaker 4: half of the Colorado game, that's just lots of focus,
- 1:52:04Speaker 4: simple stuff, you know, that are longest play a 68 yarder,
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: a linebacker, you know, leaves his coverage man to man coverage.
- 1:52:12Speaker 4: Cause he takes his eyes off and, and we're about
- 1:52:15Speaker 4: to get a sack on him by rabbit. And you know,
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: Isaac Chuck's the ball up to a running back now
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: that's uncovered and he goes 68 yards for a touchdown.
- 1:52:22Speaker 4: I mean, it's like, okay guys, do you, you're losing
- 1:52:26Speaker 4: focus here.
- 1:52:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: Everybody, all 11 guys stay focused to execute. And if
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: you do that, the chance of wins, they're pretty good.
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: I wasn't going to mention it, but because you just
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: brought up the loss of focus thing, when Bobo's out
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: there in coverage and he's looking at the sideline with
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: a shrug and going, hey, what's the call? And Colorado
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: takes advantage of that to get the score. Do we
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: blame him for that or do we blame you for that, coach?
- 1:52:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:52:50Speaker 7: No, it's good stuff like that.
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: You know, it's okay. 10 guys have got the call
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: and getting lined up.
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:52:56Speaker 4: And what, what's the, what is the reason why one
- 1:52:59Speaker 4: guy can't get the call?
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: And we're all accountable. You know, what can a coach
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: do to help him?
- 1:53:05Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:53:05Speaker 4: What can a player do to, to help himself, you know?
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: And so that's, you know, why you go back and
- 1:53:11Speaker 4: figure out what's wrong and how it can, we can
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: do better. And like I said, it's just, yeah, 11
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: guys being, being focused on, on every play.
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: Last thing before I let you go, it is college
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: game day. It is a top 15 matchup night game, blackout,
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: all that stuff.
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: The stage is set.
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: How much do you have to combat, you know, the
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: human nature, the getting caught up in the hype and
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: the distractions and, Maybe a couple of your best players
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: are going to have to do an extra interview with
- 1:53:40Speaker 2: a broadcast crew or something like that. It's a break
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: in routine, even if it's not a break in routine.
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: How do you coach that?
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the battle. Stay in the moment. It's another game.
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: It's a routine. The process is the process. You just
- 1:53:59Speaker 4: respect it and do it and treat it that way
- 1:54:01Speaker 4: every day. Yeah, are you going to be pulled out
- 1:54:04Speaker 4: from your normal routine? Absolutely. But don't let the moment
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: outweigh what we're trying to get done. So it's definitely
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: a challenge for sure. It's a great opportunity. Like I said,
- 1:54:19Speaker 4: the kids deserve it. I mean, they put themselves in
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: a position to have opportunities like this. The expectations obviously
- 1:54:27Speaker 4: grow and the demands grow, but that's what we're playing
- 1:54:31Speaker 4: this game for. That's what we're doing it for.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: Do you like a night game better than a day
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: game as a coach?
- 1:54:37Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 1:54:40Speaker 4: I like the atmosphere during the game at night better.
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: I think it's a little more lively. I don't know,
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: just maybe when you're growing up and you're going to
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: high school games and stuff like that, they're at night,
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: and so you kind of get accustomed to that. So
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: they feel different to me than day games, but I
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: like the day games to get– Get in and get out.
- 1:55:07Speaker 4: It's to sit around for a night game all day
- 1:55:10Speaker 4: on Saturday, and it's nerve-wracking. So I would prefer the
- 1:55:17Speaker 4: day game as far as time goes, but I definitely
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: love the juice and energy of a night game.
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: Well, we're looking forward to more juice, more energy, and
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: another Utah win coming up against Houston, and that'll be
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: a big one.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: Coach, good luck. Have fun. We'll see you out there,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: all right?
- 1:55:32Speaker 4: Appreciate you, OC. Take care.
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: Colton Swan, Coordinator's Corner, brought to you by our friends
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: at Mountain Home Services. Utah defensively will have a tough
- 1:55:42Speaker 2: test against Houston, but it's a strength versus strength matchup.
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: Look at the numbers. Look at what Houston has done offensively.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: Look at what Utah has done defensively. That's the matchup.
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: That's the game right there. Big thanks to Colton Swan
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: for joining us, as always. Airing of grievances next on
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: You're tuned to.

- 1:56:20Speaker 7: The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: I got a lot of problems.
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: With you people.
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: Now, you're going to hear about it.
- 1:56:39Speaker 8: 877-353-0700.
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: Text us your grievance. Time for the airing of grievances.
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: Get it off your chest. Head into the weekend burden-free.
- 1:56:46Speaker 3: You know what?
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: You can come down to the Smith's Marketplace in West Jordan.
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: Just on the west side of Redwood Road, 90th South.
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: Come express your grievances in person. Air your grievance right
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: here on the air. 877-353-0700 or at Real OC Sports.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: Curtis has this grievance. Oh, we've heard this grievance before,
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: but it's getting worse. He says, hey, can we end
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: the expectation of tipping at counter service establishments where no
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: actual service is performed? I recently visited a business where
- 1:57:21Speaker 2: the employee held the card reader and asked aloud for
- 1:57:23Speaker 2: a tip, bypassing the typical discreet screen selection entirely. Declining
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: vocally made the entire transaction incredibly awkward. When did this
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: aggressive approach to tipping become the standard practice? I'm actually
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: prone to tipping if it's discreet, especially if a service
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: has been done. Look, if someone is verbally asking, like
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: you're at a counter service type place, and they flip
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: the iPad around and you can opt out, and if
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: they say, hey, please leave a tip. You are well
- 1:57:51Speaker 2: within your rights, if you don't want to, to say,
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: no thank you, I'm not going to. This interaction has
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: lasted 42 seconds, and I'm not going to tip you
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: for that.
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: You don't have to tip at a place like that.
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: If you're at a sit-down restaurant, you should be tipping generously,
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: because I've said this all the time. That extra 2%, 5%,
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: even 10%, that extra $ 5.
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: You're never going to think about it again.
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: But having worked in the service industry, when you get
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: great tips, when you walk away from your shift with
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: like an extra $ 40 that you didn't think you were
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: going to have, that's nice when you're in that position.
- 1:58:29Speaker 5: Curtis?
- 1:58:31Speaker 8: Sorry, keep going.
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: You can feel that way about it, Curtis. Go ahead.
- 1:58:34Speaker 8: For sure.
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: Go ahead, James.
- 1:58:35Speaker 9: I think also to your point about service industry, I
- 1:58:40Speaker 9: think delivery drivers are the other one that you should
- 1:58:43Speaker 9: tip all the time as generously as you can. Servers certainly, though,
- 1:58:49Speaker 9: because in Utah, that's all the money they get is
- 1:58:53Speaker 9: from tips, right? So that's– other places– They do a
- 1:58:58Speaker 9: better job with the wages for servers, and you should
- 1:59:01Speaker 9: still tip generously when you're in other states. But in
- 1:59:04Speaker 9: Utah especially is one of those states where it's like, yeah,
- 1:59:06Speaker 9: tip as generously as possible to your servers and stuff. But, yeah,
- 1:59:12Speaker 9: almost everybody else, like I just ignore the tip screen
- 1:59:16Speaker 9: at this point. And in my experience, even when it's
- 1:59:19Speaker 9: been awkward where you're at a food truck or something
- 1:59:22Speaker 9: and they're like, go ahead and hit yes or no
- 1:59:25Speaker 9: on the next screen, and you have to, while they're
- 1:59:28Speaker 9: looking at you, hit no. Like, I haven't gotten any
- 1:59:32Speaker 9: indication that they're taking it personally, that you're not tipping them.
- 1:59:35Speaker 9: So it'll be okay. It's annoying, but I've gotten to
- 1:59:39Speaker 9: a point where I'm just going to unapologetically say no
- 1:59:43Speaker 9: in most cases, except for those couple, too, that you
- 1:59:45Speaker 9: and I have mentioned.
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: Here's the thing, also.
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: I don't get bothered by people asking for something, because
- 1:59:52Speaker 2: I don't get bothered by people. I don't get bothered
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: by the fact that I have to say no. Now,
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: if they get bothered by my saying no, then they
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: shouldn't ask. That's how I feel about it.
- 2:00:02Speaker 8: A whole different situation.
- 2:00:04Speaker 2: On both sides of this transaction, it's like if you
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: want to ask, fine. I won't begrudge you asking. Just
- 2:00:08Speaker 2: don't begrudge when I say no. I will not be
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: exercising that option. And I am one that usually does
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: overdo it on tipping because I worked in the service industry.
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: But there's a line, and we've talked about it before.
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: 1466 is a great one.
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: Certainly a valid grievance. My phone thinks I have a problem.
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: It says, oh, see, my grievance is with my phone
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: listening to me. My wife and I were shopping, and
- 2:00:33Speaker 2: I'd say, we need to get some strawberry Cialis. She
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: finally burst out laughing and said, it's Celsius. Cialis is
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: for something completely different. Well, ever since then, YouTube has
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: been bombarding me with ads for performance enhancers, for male
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: performance enhancers.
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: Wink, wink.
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: My wife sees every one of them.
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: So apparently my phone can't tell the difference between an
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: energy drink and an ED drug, and now my wife
- 2:00:59Speaker 2: thinks my phone knows something about me that I don't.
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: That is hilarious that you thought that Celsius and Cialis
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: were the same thing. You got those two things interchanged,
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: and that your phone was listening to you and now
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: sends you targeted ads. Somewhere in your algorithm, it is
- 2:01:16Speaker 2: telling somebody that you have a performance problem, that you
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: have an issue that hopefully never strikes you. I wish
- 2:01:22Speaker 2: everyone well in that department.
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: That's tough, man.
- 2:01:26Speaker 9: And sticking with the Seinfeld theme of this segment every week,
- 2:01:30Speaker 9: airing of grievances, not that there's anything wrong with that.
- 2:01:32Speaker 2: Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- 2:01:34Speaker 8: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: It's like 50% of people deal with it, but the
- 2:01:39Speaker 2: fact that your phone just decided because you got it wrong,
- 2:01:42Speaker 2: that is hilarious.
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:01:45Speaker 9: And I do have a grievance against phones seemingly listening
- 2:01:49Speaker 9: to what you say, too, and getting bombarded with ads
- 2:01:52Speaker 9: that you didn't really ask for. You may have said
- 2:01:55Speaker 9: something one time, and all of a sudden it's like,
- 2:01:58Speaker 9: stop listening to me. I don't want to see all
- 2:02:00Speaker 9: these ads. So a valid grievance for sure. Also hilarious.
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: Grievance from 6052.
- 2:02:06Speaker 2: Out of all the coaches on staff, none of them
- 2:02:08Speaker 2: thought to call timeout when we failed to cover a
- 2:02:10Speaker 2: wide receiver on the goal line. This is obviously a
- 2:02:13Speaker 2: grievance that you've been festering on for the last six days.
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: That did happen when Bobo Chenault didn't get the defensive call.
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: And good recognition by Isaac Wilson and by Colorado to
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: snap the ball and throw it to an uncovered man.
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: Should have been fixed with an easy timeout call or
- 2:02:31Speaker 2: should have been fixed with the call getting in correctly
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: to every defensive player. We talked about that with Colton Swan. But, yeah,
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: if you don't get it in, go ahead and call timeout.
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: They didn't.
- 2:02:41Speaker 5: And.
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: Colorado scored a touchdown. Ultimately, no harm, no foul. Nothing happens, right? Like,
- 2:02:47Speaker 2: you win the game, it's okay. But still, grievance worthy,
- 2:02:51Speaker 2: I think.
- 2:02:54Speaker 3: 66-80.
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: My grievance.
- 2:02:56Speaker 2: Too many commercials and two longer games for college football.
- 2:03:00Speaker 2: NFL has it completely dialed. You know, this one, I'm
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: not trying to diminish your grievance, but it doesn't bother me, right?
- 2:03:12Speaker 2: I mean, Utah's game, the last, was it the last
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: home game when they had like a two-hour second quarter?
- 2:03:19Speaker 2: That was a little bit long. That was penalties, though.
- 2:03:22Speaker 2: That was something the referees needed to figure out.
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: That wasn't.
- 2:03:26Speaker 2: Something that the television or NCAA football at large did.
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: 3216 Bryce says, I went through the drive-thru at one
- 2:03:36Speaker 2: of the local burrito places this week and the worker said,
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: And the worker handed me a pen and the receipt
- 2:03:41Speaker 2: out the window to add.
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: A tip to the bill in the drive-thru. Oh, that's amazing.
- 2:03:48Speaker 2: Okay, so let me ask this. I am not a
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: coffee guy, all right? 877-353-0700, let me know.
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: I'm not a coffee guy.
- 2:03:55Speaker 2: There's a Starbucks right next to us here at the
- 2:03:57Speaker 2: Smith's Marketplace. We're in the little cafe, right? Like, typically
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: people tip their barista, right? Do you do that if
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: you're driving through?
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: I really don't know. I want to know.
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: I really don't know because I don't go like every
- 2:04:13Speaker 2: morning and grab my energy drink or my coffee or
- 2:04:16Speaker 2: my chai latte or whatever.
- 2:04:19Speaker 8: Let me know.
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: 877-353-0700. Agreements.
- 2:04:23Speaker 2: Can you guys stop saying my teams are going to
- 2:04:25Speaker 2: blow out other teams? Because every time you do, it's
- 2:04:27Speaker 2: either closer than it should be, a loss or a
- 2:04:30Speaker 2: blowout loss. So please stop doing it.
- 2:04:33Speaker 9: I feel like this one's very much directed at me.
- 2:04:35Speaker 9: I had a bad couple of games there. I had
- 2:04:38Speaker 9: a really bad prediction of the Utah-Colorado game, and then.
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: We know what happened.
- 2:04:42Speaker 2: That wasn't a bad prediction, James. All of us thought
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: that Utah was going to blow out Colorado. Everyone thought that.
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: We all thought that.
- 2:04:49Speaker 8: The result turned out a lot different.
- 2:04:51Speaker 9: And then, of course, I famously brought it up again
- 2:04:54Speaker 9: today about how wrong I was about the Jazz opener
- 2:04:57Speaker 9: against the Grizzlies.
- 2:04:58Speaker 8: So I apologize, Derek.
- 2:05:00Speaker 9: I hope that things go better in that regard for
- 2:05:03Speaker 9: our local teams.
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: This from Sam. Grievance.
- 2:05:08Speaker 2: Clueless shoppers are people clogging lanes of travel in stores.
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: You're in a grocery store right now.
- 2:05:14Speaker 7: I am.
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: I'm at Smith's. So look around.
- 2:05:17Speaker 2: Yeah, this actually happened while we were playing the Colton
- 2:05:19Speaker 2: Swan interview. I went and I wandered around and did
- 2:05:22Speaker 2: a little errand, picked up some things that we need
- 2:05:24Speaker 2: from Smith's.
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: Had to grab an onion, you know.
- 2:05:27Speaker 2: And, yes, there were people just, like, I had to
- 2:05:32Speaker 2: play Frogger with all the other cart pushers in the store.
- 2:05:34Speaker 2: So I'm with you. This just happened to me 10
- 2:05:37Speaker 2: minutes ago. It says, I was at a major warehouse store,
- 2:05:40Speaker 2: which I won't name. While I also don't know where
- 2:05:43Speaker 2: every item is in said store, if you're just standing
- 2:05:45Speaker 2: with an extra-wide shopping cart clogging the aisles in the
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: middle of the store, parked in the middle of the
- 2:05:49Speaker 2: frozen food area watching TikTok, you aren't doing this correctly.
- 2:05:54Speaker 2: Potential solution, if you're that clueless. I should be allowed
- 2:05:58Speaker 2: to channel my inner Mike Allstott and create a shopping
- 2:06:01Speaker 2: walking path in the A-gap.
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: Especially you, TikTokers. Sam, by all means, go Allstott. Try it.
- 2:06:08Speaker 3: Do it.
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: I want to see it.
- 2:06:10Speaker 2: Love that.
- 2:06:13Speaker 10: 7164.
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: Grievance.
- 2:06:15Speaker 2: Football games kicking off 30 minutes after it is supposed
- 2:06:18Speaker 2: to start.
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: This is an annoying thing.
- 2:06:21Speaker 2: And it happens, especially with the night games, and it
- 2:06:23Speaker 2: happens because You know, there's delays, and because the earlier
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: games run longer, maybe there's an overtime game or two
- 2:06:30Speaker 2: during the day. So when you're the back end of
- 2:06:33Speaker 2: the television schedule, like Utah has been so many times,
- 2:06:37Speaker 2: occasionally kickoff gets pushed back 15, 20, 30 minutes. Not
- 2:06:41Speaker 2: ideal when you're already getting home at 1 o'clock.
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: I get it.
- 2:06:44Speaker 2: But, guys, gals, night games at Rice-Eccles Stadium, you get
- 2:06:50Speaker 2: seven home games this year. Most years you get six.
- 2:06:53Speaker 2: Seven Saturdays. Seven fall evenings.
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: Totally worth it.
- 2:06:58Speaker 4: Incredible.
- 2:07:00Speaker 9: Let's not get spoiled. Get your nap in on Sundays.
- 2:07:05Speaker 9: That's what you got to do. You just got to go, okay,
- 2:07:07Speaker 9: I'm just going to take an extra large nap on
- 2:07:10Speaker 9: Sunday again.
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: Spoken like someone who's still got a child who naps, James.
- 2:07:14Speaker 8: That's a good point. Privileged perspective here, bro.
- 2:07:20Speaker 2: Nothing better, by the way, than laying down on a Sunday,
- 2:07:22Speaker 2: NFL game that you probably don't care that much about
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: when you've got a little baby, when you've got a
- 2:07:28Speaker 2: young one, and they fall asleep while you're asleep. They
- 2:07:31Speaker 2: lay on your chest and fall asleep. There's literally nothing
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: better than that. You get a little football. You get
- 2:07:36Speaker 2: a cuddle. You get a nap. Those three things put together,
- 2:07:40Speaker 2: I mean, I guess if you add some snacks in there,
- 2:07:42Speaker 2: it's better, but wow.
- 2:07:43Speaker 8: It's pretty great.
- 2:07:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:07:45Speaker 2: Hayden says this. My grievance is with myself. Why am
- 2:07:48Speaker 2: I so invested in football that I watched the fourth
- 2:07:50Speaker 2: quarter of the game last week in the desert camping,
- 2:07:53Speaker 2: occasionally screaming much to the disappointment of others with me?
- 2:07:57Speaker 10: Oh, Hayden.
- 2:07:59Speaker 2: Look modern technology is miraculous in that it can keep
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: you connected and you can watch these games kind of
- 2:08:06Speaker 2: anywhere and there's i mean there's nothing better but if
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: you're supposed to be out there enjoying nature unplugged under
- 2:08:14Speaker 2: the stars you probably should just watch the replay the
- 2:08:17Speaker 2: next day shouldn't you Still, I'm not going to air
- 2:08:22Speaker 2: a grievance at you. You can do it at yourself.
- 2:08:24Speaker 2: I'm not going to air a grievance at you.
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: Kelly says this.
- 2:08:28Speaker 2: Yes, tip your barista at the drive-thru. What's the difference
- 2:08:31Speaker 2: between being the barista and making your coffee and handing
- 2:08:33Speaker 2: it to you over a counter or through a window?
- 2:08:35Speaker 2: I don't know. So I guess, yeah, you would tip
- 2:08:37Speaker 2: them at the drive-thru. But then why aren't you tipping
- 2:08:40Speaker 2: the McDonald's worker?
- 2:08:42Speaker 9: Yeah, is that– so I'm also ignorant on this. So see,
- 2:08:45Speaker 9: as a non-coffee drinker myself, is that– Is that an
- 2:08:49Speaker 9: expectation for baristas that even though they're, from my perspective,
- 2:08:57Speaker 9: like you just said, what's the difference between that and
- 2:09:00Speaker 9: any other food you're getting at a fast food or
- 2:09:02Speaker 9: fast casual spot?
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: If I have to tip at Starbucks, then I should
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: also tip at Burger King.
- 2:09:07Speaker 9: I would think the same thing, but maybe there's some
- 2:09:10Speaker 9: kind of a reason for why there might be a
- 2:09:13Speaker 9: different expectation.
- 2:09:14Speaker 8: I'm open to that explanation, but that.
- 2:09:18Speaker 9: I personally, going into it with this level of ignorance,
- 2:09:22Speaker 9: I probably wouldn't tip my barista when I would get
- 2:09:25Speaker 9: a coffee, but I'm a non-coffee drinker, so I don't know.
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: They would be looking at both of us because we'd
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: both be like, what, are we supposed to?
- 2:09:33Speaker 8: I don't know. I don't know. Look at the person
- 2:09:35Speaker 8: behind us. Do you tip your barista?
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: They'd spit in your coffee the next time that you
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: didn't drink coffee.
- 2:09:40Speaker 8: That's what would happen. And then I would never do
- 2:09:42Speaker 8: it again.
- 2:09:47Speaker 9: 877-353-0700.
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: Officials throwing a flag on every kickoff of every football
- 2:09:52Speaker 2: game from Steve.
- 2:09:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: Is that happening?
- 2:09:56Speaker 8: I don't know if I've noticed it as much as Steve.
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: I haven't noticed it as much as him either. This
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: one is a real grievance-worthy story, 100%.
- 2:10:00Speaker 2: Shout-out to James for sending me this. Because earlier this
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: week you had the Madison Square Garden ring ceremony. Knicks
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: ended up losing the game. But you had the banner unveil.
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: You had the championship rings handed out. And several publications
- 2:10:27Speaker 2: picked this up. A lot of journalists did their homework
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: on this. Assistant coaches were handed boxes. Like the custom
- 2:10:37Speaker 2: dark blue with the orange ribbon box.
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: None of the assistant coaches.
- 2:10:43Speaker 2: If you go back and watch the ring ceremony, none
- 2:10:45Speaker 2: of them opened the box because they knew there was
- 2:10:47Speaker 2: no ring in there. That was all done as part
- 2:10:50Speaker 2: of like this pretend, hey, everyone's getting their rings right
- 2:10:54Speaker 2: now kind of thing. The assistant coaches for the New
- 2:10:56Speaker 2: York Knicks are going to have to wait to get
- 2:10:58Speaker 2: their rings.
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: Okay, fine.
- 2:10:59Speaker 2: That's probably a little bit annoying that the players who
- 2:11:02Speaker 2: already are the most privileged in the team, they get
- 2:11:05Speaker 2: everything first.
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: But, you know, they're the ones who actually won the ring.
- 2:11:08Speaker 8: Apparently not.
- 2:11:10Speaker 9: Uncommon for that to be the case, though. This article
- 2:11:14Speaker 9: in The Athletic mentioned a few other recent teams where
- 2:11:17Speaker 9: the assistant coaches got them later.
- 2:11:19Speaker 8: Okay, fine.
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 2:11:22Speaker 2: Here's where the grievance comes in, and this is the
- 2:11:24Speaker 2: most Jimmy Dolan-Nicks thing ever. So, like, players get the rings,
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: coaches get the rings, and then if you're a front
- 2:11:42Speaker 2: office guy, you also get a ring. Now, if you're, like,
- 2:11:45Speaker 2: the assistant regional scout, if you're the black troop of
- 2:11:50Speaker 2: the front office, you're getting a different ring, okay? You're
- 2:11:54Speaker 2: still getting a championship ring, but you're not getting the $ 200, 000
- 2:11:58Speaker 2: diamond-crusted ring. You're getting something that is still amazing, still cool,
- 2:12:03Speaker 2: but not quite as premium as as the one that
- 2:12:06Speaker 2: the players and the head coach gets, right? And then
- 2:12:10Speaker 2: if you're, like, working in the middle, you get a ring,
- 2:12:13Speaker 2: but you get something that's, like, you know, a crude
- 2:12:17Speaker 2: facsimile of the actual rings.
- 2:12:19Speaker 7: Still amazing.
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: Still cool that it gets recognized and celebrated. I think
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: it's great.
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: Like, imagine being, you know, a ticket account sales rep,
- 2:12:30Speaker 2: and you get a championship ring.
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: That's cool. Nothing more than that.
- 2:12:40Speaker 2: So what they did is they sent out all the
- 2:12:42Speaker 2: best companies who of course were wondering, oh my gosh,
- 2:12:48Speaker 2: we just won a championship.
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, this is amazing. I wonder if I
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: get a ring.
- 2:12:51Speaker 2: I wonder if in my position, if I'm like the
- 2:12:54Speaker 2: security guy on gate E, do I get a ring?
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: Right?
- 2:12:58Speaker 2: So they sent out an email with the headline, with
- 2:13:02Speaker 2: the tagline, with the subject line, Your championship ring is here, right?
- 2:13:09Speaker 2: And so people were going to click on this link
- 2:13:12Speaker 2: and put in their size and make their requests and
- 2:13:15Speaker 2: all that stuff.
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: But it wasn't real, James. I know you read this article.
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: It was a phishing test.
- 2:13:23Speaker 4: P-H.
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: Phishing test.
- 2:13:26Speaker 2: It was one of those stupid things that every corporate
- 2:13:29Speaker 2: entity does right now where they put a dirty link...
- 2:13:34Speaker 2: in an email that looks like it's legit, and then
- 2:13:37Speaker 2: you are now in trouble because you clicked on the
- 2:13:40Speaker 2: link and you didn't respect cybersecurity of the company.
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: Well, guess what? I can honestly say this.
- 2:13:47Speaker 2: Never once in my life have I clicked on a
- 2:13:49Speaker 2: link from like an actual phishing scam.
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: It's never happened in my entire life.
- 2:13:56Speaker 2: It's happened like four times where I've been tested by
- 2:13:59Speaker 2: my employer and clicked.
- 2:14:00Speaker 1: On a link and gotten the.
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: The reprimand associated with it.
- 2:14:07Speaker 2: Hey, now you have to take a 15-minute cybersecurity online
- 2:14:10Speaker 2: course because of it. Doing that and framing it and
- 2:14:15Speaker 2: phrasing it as like, hey, this is the link that's
- 2:14:17Speaker 2: going to get you your championship ring is absolutely cruel.
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: It's so messed up.
- 2:14:24Speaker 2: Jimmy Dolan, why you got such a problem with just
- 2:14:27Speaker 2: being a nice guy? You're a billionaire. Your team just
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: won an NBA championship. He's so paranoid and weird and
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: has like this whole security and cyber security obsession.
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: And he did this to his employees. Awful.
- 2:14:42Speaker 2: Grievance against Jimmy Dolan again.
- 2:14:45Speaker 8: He can't stop being a.
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: Jerk.
- 2:14:50Speaker 8: He just can't stop.
- 2:14:52Speaker 9: And Spence has been good about pointing this out that
- 2:14:56Speaker 9: he's always been this way. Even when When Dave Check,
- 2:15:01Speaker 9: Spence's dad, was part of the organization and he left
- 2:15:04Speaker 9: as it kind of transitioned to James Dolan being owner.
- 2:15:07Speaker 9: But even back then, he's been this kind of a
- 2:15:11Speaker 9: jerk all the time and just out of touch. This
- 2:15:14Speaker 9: is ridiculous. This is wrong. And it's not as wrong
- 2:15:18Speaker 9: as some of the other stuff with the cybersecurity stuff,
- 2:15:21Speaker 9: but this is like, you're going to do this to
- 2:15:23Speaker 9: your own employees?
- 2:15:26Speaker 8: It's ridiculous.
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Messed up. And the other thing in the article.
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: This one is very funny from Jordan. Grievance with insurance company.
- 2:15:36Speaker 8: Go ahead.
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 2:15:38Speaker 9: I was going to say, the other interesting thing in
- 2:15:39Speaker 9: the article is Adam Silver, I didn't watch the ring ceremony.
- 2:15:43Speaker 9: I was getting home when it was happening. But Adam
- 2:15:45Speaker 9: Silver apparently did not speak to the arena, which is
- 2:15:49Speaker 9: what the commissioner has done forever when they're having banner
- 2:15:54Speaker 9: raising or ring ceremonies in any sport.
- 2:15:57Speaker 8: He didn't speak.
- 2:15:57Speaker 9: He wasn't even in the camera shot during the ring
- 2:16:00Speaker 9: ceremony where he was sitting because of how much he
- 2:16:05Speaker 9: has been at odds with James Dolan. So I'm staying
- 2:16:08Speaker 9: tuned to see if there's going to be some kind
- 2:16:10Speaker 9: of thing, some kind of reckoning for James Dolan given
- 2:16:13Speaker 9: that that's the relationship with Adam Silver.
- 2:16:15Speaker 8: But anyway, moving on.
- 2:16:19Speaker 2: Jordan says this. Grievance with insurance company commercials. We know
- 2:16:23Speaker 2: who you are by now. We understand it's a comedy
- 2:16:25Speaker 2: hour competition. Between a gecko, an emu, and a chick
- 2:16:29Speaker 2: named Flo.
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: They all claim they will save you money.
- 2:16:31Speaker 2: I think they'll save us more money if they quit
- 2:16:33Speaker 2: spending enormous amounts of money on commercials and actually.
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: Pay on claims. You're probably right.
- 2:16:39Speaker 2: You're probably right.
- 2:16:40Speaker 1: I'm sure there's a lot of budget that goes into
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: those bad boys.
- 2:16:44Speaker 2: Insurance in general has become such a scam because they're
- 2:16:46Speaker 2: always trying to not pay out on everything.
- 2:16:49Speaker 1: Health insurance? I get so mad because they'll send you bills.
- 2:16:55Speaker 2: That you already paid, expecting that you're going to pay
- 2:16:56Speaker 2: it again.
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: All right. We'll read another grievance or two if we
- 2:17:02Speaker 1: have time.
- 2:17:03Speaker 2: But we've got to take our final break, and we'll
- 2:17:05Speaker 2: come back and give away Nickelback tickets. It's the Sean
- 2:17:08Speaker 2: O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. You're listening to
