- 0:11Hello, friends. It is shown here and thank you
- 0:16for joining me today on Maundy Thursday morning that why is it
- 0:21called Maundy Thursday? It's not because we're all sad
- 0:24and morning, but more Andy is a version of the Latin word mun
- 0:29data. I'm like a mandate and
- 0:31instruction and this is referring to not Luke.
- 0:35What we're going to read today. But John's version of today's
- 0:40events in John. Chapter 13 when Jesus says this
- 0:43is my commandment love one. Another as I have loved you and
- 0:48he washes their feet and today is the day, where we remember
- 0:53Jesus command to us. That we are to love and to serve
- 0:58each other. So when you hear the word more,
- 1:00Andy know that Jesus tells you to love one.
- 1:03Another, as he has loved us, and that is what we are going to
- 1:08hear all about today, as we read through this challenging and
- 1:14difficult to hear. But equally remarkable and
- 1:18impressive rating because this is the god who loves us and
- 1:23places himself in this position because he loves us. so join me
- 1:29friends, as we read together the incredible, Luke chapter 22
- 1:45The Festival of unleavened bread which is also called Passover
- 1:49was approaching the leading priests and teachers of
- 1:52religious law were plotting how to kill Jesus but they were
- 1:56afraid of the people's reaction, then Satan entered into Judas,
- 2:01Iscariot who was one of the 12 disciples and he went to the
- 2:06leading priests and captains of the temple guard to discuss the
- 2:09best way to betray Jesus to them.
- 2:12They were delighted and they promised to give him money so he
- 2:17agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
- 2:21So they could arrest him when the crowds weren't around.
- 2:26Now, the festival unleavened bread arrived, when the Passover
- 2:30Lamb is sacrificed, Jesus, sent Peter, and John ahead and said
- 2:35go and prepare the Passover meal so we can eat it together.
- 2:40Where do you want us to prepare it?
- 2:42They asked him. He replied as he went to
- 2:45Jerusalem. A man carrying a pitcher of
- 2:48water will meet you. Follow him at the house.
- 2:52He enters said to the owner. The teacher asks where is the
- 2:56guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?
- 3:01He will take you upstairs to a large room.
- 3:03That is already set up. That is where you should prepare
- 3:07our meal. They went off to the city and
- 3:10found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the
- 3:14Passover meal there. When the time came Jesus and the
- 3:19apostles sat down together at the table.
- 3:22Jesus said, I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal
- 3:27with you before my suffering Begins for.
- 3:30I tell you now that I won't eat this meal again until its
- 3:34meaning is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
- 3:38Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it.
- 3:41Then he said, take this and share it among yourselves for I
- 3:46will not drink wine again until the kingdom of God has come, he
- 3:51took some bread and gave thanks to God for it.
- 3:54Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to his disciples.
- 3:57Saying, this is my body which is given for you do this in
- 4:02remembrance of me. After the supper, he took
- 4:05another cup of wine and said this cup is the New Covenant
- 4:09between God and his people, an agreement confirmed with my
- 4:13blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.
- 4:18But here at this table sitting among us, as a friend, is the
- 4:23man who will betray me for it? Has been determined that the son
- 4:27of man must die, but what sorrow?
- 4:31Awaits the one who betrayed him? The disciples began to ask each
- 4:35other which of them would ever do such a thing.
- 4:40Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be
- 4:42the greatest among them. Jesus told them in this world,
- 4:46the Kings and great men lorded over there.
- 4:49People yet, they are called friends of the people but among
- 4:54you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among
- 4:58you should take the lowest Rank and the leader should be like a
- 5:02servant who is more important. The one who sits at the table,
- 5:07or the one who serves The one who sits at the table, of
- 5:11course, but not here for. I am among you as one who serves
- 5:17You have stayed with me in my time of trial and just as my
- 5:20father has granted me a kingdom. I now, Grant you the right to
- 5:25eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom and you will sit on
- 5:30Thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 5:35Simon Simon Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat, but
- 5:42I have pleaded in prayer for you.
- 5:44Simon that your faith should not fail.
- 5:48So, when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen
- 5:52your brothers, Peter said, Lord, I'm ready to go to prison with
- 5:57you and even to die with you. But Jesus said, Peter, let me
- 6:03tell you something. Before the rooster crows
- 6:06tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know
- 6:11me. And Jesus asked them when I sent
- 6:15you out to preach the good news and you did not have money a
- 6:19Traveller's bag or an extra pair of sandals.
- 6:22Did you need anything? No, they're applied.
- 6:26But now he said, take your money and a traveler's bag.
- 6:30And if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one for
- 6:34the time. Has Come For This prophecy about
- 6:36me to be fulfilled. He was counted among the rebels.
- 6:42Yes. Everything written about me by
- 6:44the prophets. Will come true.
- 6:46Look Lord. They replied we have two swords
- 6:49Among Us. That's enough.
- 6:52He said then accompanied by the disciples Jesus left the
- 6:57upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives there.
- 7:01He told them pray that you will not give in to temptation.
- 7:07He walked away about a stone's throw and knelt down and prayed.
- 7:11Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of
- 7:17suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done,
- 7:22not mine, that an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened
- 7:26him, he prayed more fervently, and he was in such Agony of
- 7:31spirit that his sweat fell to the ground.
- 7:34Like great drops of blood at last.
- 7:38He stood up again and returned to his disciples, only to find
- 7:41them asleep. Exhausted from grief.
- 7:45Why are you sleeping? He asked them, get up and pray
- 7:50so that you will not give in to temptation.
- 7:53But even as Jesus said, this a crowd approached led by Judas,
- 7:58one of the Twelve Disciples Judas walked over to Jesus to
- 8:02greet him with a kiss. But Jesus said Judas, would you
- 8:07betray the son of man with a kiss?
- 8:12When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they
- 8:15exclaimed, Lord, should we fight?
- 8:18We brought the swords and one of them, struck the high priests
- 8:21slave, slashing off his right ear.
- 8:24But Jesus said, no more of this. And he touched the man's ear and
- 8:29healed him and Jesus spoke to the leading priests the captains
- 8:33of the temple guard, and the elders, who would come for him?
- 8:37Am I some dangerous revolutionary?
- 8:40He asked that you come with swords.
- 8:42And clubs to arrest me. Why didn't you arrest me in the
- 8:45temple? I was there every day but this
- 8:49is your moment, the time and the power of Darkness Reigns So they
- 8:55arrested him and led him to the high priests home and Peter
- 8:59followed at a distance. The guards lit, a fire in the
- 9:03middle of the courtyard and sat around it and Peter join them
- 9:06there. A servant girl noticed him in
- 9:09the firelight and began staring at him.
- 9:12Finally. She said this man was one of
- 9:15Jesus followers, but Peter denied it woman he said I don't
- 9:20even know him. After a while, someone else
- 9:23looked at him and said, you must be one of them.
- 9:27No, man. I'm not Peter retorted about an
- 9:31hour later. Someone else insisted this must
- 9:34be one of them because he is a Galilean to.
- 9:38But Peter said, man, I don't know what you were talking about
- 9:43and immediately while he was still speaking, the rooster
- 9:47crowed at that moment, the Lord turned and looked at Peter.
- 9:52Suddenly the Lord's words. Flashed through Peters mind
- 9:56before the rooster crows tomorrow morning.
- 9:58You will deny three times that you even know me Peter left the
- 10:03courtyard weeping bitterly. The Gods in charge of Jesus,
- 10:10began mocking and beating him at blindfolded him and said,
- 10:14prophesy to us who hit you that time, then they hurled all sorts
- 10:19of terrible insults at him. At Daybreak, all the Elders of
- 10:24the people assembled, including the leading priests and the
- 10:27teachers of religious law, Jesus was led before this High Council
- 10:32and they said, tell us, are you the Messiah?
- 10:37But he replied if I tell you, you won't believe me.
- 10:41And if I ask you a question, you won't answer.
- 10:45But from now on the son of man will be seated in the place of
- 10:50power at God's right hand. And they all shouted.
- 10:54So are you claiming to be the Son of God and he replied, you
- 10:59say that I am. Why do we need other Witnesses?
- 11:03They said, we ourselves heard him say it.
- 11:17Jesus, we hear the story and our hearts sink.
- 11:23It's so hard to hear of you putting yourself In Harm's Way
- 11:26like this. But knowing your mission, you
- 11:31put your will to the side and you follow your father's will.
- 11:35Thank you for this incredible example for us.
- 11:40And thank you for the story of Peter who so boldly and so
- 11:44confidently, follows you all his life.
- 11:51And then denies you when it counts.
- 11:54We are like that to Jesus. We love you with our whole
- 11:59hearts and we fail you again, and again, just like you forgive
- 12:06Peter, thank you for your forgiveness, fast.
- 12:14As we follow you to that hill and Calvary.
- 12:18We thank you for your sacrifice for us.
- 12:21We thank you for the insane amount of love that you have for
- 12:25us. That draws you ever closer to
- 12:28that point? Not for your good but for our
- 12:33good so we can be with you. We are humbled by you, your
- 12:40majesty and your love for us. And it's in your Mighty and
- 12:46humbling name that we pray. I'm him.
- 12:49I'm him.
