- 0:32This is Laura Dirdo with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:34podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:37William Davis, president of the Illinois region of
- 0:39Deaconess, Illinois. William, it's a pleasure to have
- 0:41you on the podcast today. Hey. Good afternoon.
- 0:44It's a pleasure,
- 0:45pleasure to be with you, and, hello, everyone.
- 0:49Excellent. Well, I'm looking forward to our conversation
- 0:51because I know health care is just changing
- 0:52so quickly today, and there's a lot of
- 0:54cool things that you're doing at Deaconess, Illinois
- 0:56that we can share with our broader audience
- 0:58as well as get your perspective on the
- 0:59future. But before we do that, I I'm
- 1:01curious. Can you introduce yourself and just tell
- 1:03us a little bit more about Deaconess Illinois?
- 1:05Sure. No. Absolutely. And, again, thank you for
- 1:08having having me this afternoon, and happy New
- 1:11Year, everyone. It's gonna be a great year
- 1:12in in health care and across the country.
- 1:14So,
- 1:15Will Davis, a service president of, Deaconess, Illinois.
- 1:19So when we think of Deaconess, Illinois, think
- 1:21we've got four hospitals that we
- 1:24own, here in the Southern Illinois,
- 1:27area in the the communities.
- 1:29My role, is to to make sure that
- 1:32people in
- 1:33rural
- 1:34America, in in the regional communities that we
- 1:37are serving have access to high quality, compassionate
- 1:41health care that's close to home. And it
- 1:42it is more than just a kind of
- 1:44a tagline. It means kind of balancing the
- 1:46realities of of rural health care,
- 1:49with our commitment to growth, with our commitment
- 1:51to quality, and commitment to access
- 1:54so that at the end of the day,
- 1:56patients don't have to leave their communities,
- 1:58and they can get care they need right
- 2:00here close to home right here in Southern
- 2:02Illinois.
- 2:03I love that. You know? And and what
- 2:05an important message and
- 2:07mission to have. You know, it's serving those
- 2:10populations that really makes a big difference and
- 2:12making sure you have access to care in
- 2:14communities across the board. So,
- 2:16from your perspective, when you look back at
- 2:18the last year, what was the most important
- 2:19initiative that you led? What did you do,
- 2:21and what were the results?
- 2:23Man, that's a that's a big question.
- 2:25It's a great question.
- 2:27Couple of things I I will point out,
- 2:29and I this won't hit everything, so I
- 2:31apologize to my team if I if I
- 2:33do leave some of the things off. But
- 2:35I I'll tell you some of the big
- 2:36things that we are very proud of,
- 2:40really,
- 2:41centered around on expanding access to care here
- 2:44in Southern Illinois.
- 2:46And I'll say the the results were very
- 2:48real, and they were very local. So one
- 2:50of the major milestones that we launched
- 2:52was our our neuroscience
- 2:54services,
- 2:55which we did not have here,
- 2:57in in Marion.
- 2:59And, and so, really, we started seeing,
- 3:03patients in that program,
- 3:05mid,
- 3:06last year,
- 3:07and already nearly 700
- 3:09patients,
- 3:10been able to stay local,
- 3:13for the care that really previously they would
- 3:16have traveled outside of our region for. So
- 3:18that's 700 people who were able to receive
- 3:21advanced care close to home,
- 3:23close to their support systems,
- 3:26less destruction
- 3:27to their lives. And so we're proud of
- 3:29that.
- 3:30Another thing we did here in the region,
- 3:32was expanding our our imaging services.
- 3:35And so, we took on and did a
- 3:37pretty big project,
- 3:39around the the amyloid PET,
- 3:41and and, you know, plaque that plaque detection.
- 3:44And so we invested,
- 3:46and strengthened our diagnostic capabilities here to ensure
- 3:49that patients, one, they had access to advanced
- 3:52imaging locally rather than traveling, you know, those
- 3:55long distances,
- 3:56for for those services. And so that was
- 3:59a significant achievement.
- 4:00We were able to launch,
- 4:02there. And then the the the other one,
- 4:06is I don't wanna,
- 4:07eat up all of the time, but we
- 4:09we launched cancer care in in Mount Vernon.
- 4:13And I tell you if if for just,
- 4:15you know, thirty seconds on on this story,
- 4:17our very first patient,
- 4:19he was traveling a 160
- 4:21miles round trip for treatment.
- 4:24And so we we brought that into to
- 4:26Mount Vernon,
- 4:29brought in a a great team, a lot
- 4:31of training.
- 4:32And so he was able to complete,
- 4:35his,
- 4:36cancer treatments at that location, which was less
- 4:39than 20 miles 20 miles from his home.
- 4:43And so that's really what when we talk
- 4:46about expanding access, that's what it looks like.
- 4:48It's not just services on a paper,
- 4:51but it it's time. It's that energy. It's
- 4:53it's the stress that's saved,
- 4:55on on the pay on the patients and
- 4:57their families.
- 4:59So we've made significant
- 5:01milestones,
- 5:02bringing bringing this, and
- 5:05and all of that is expanding access, and
- 5:08it it's beautiful. And so we are have
- 5:11made, you know, meaningful progress as well on
- 5:13quality.
- 5:15We were just,
- 5:17announced,
- 5:17a LeapFrog b. And now
- 5:20the significance for,
- 5:22you know, our hospital one of our hospitals
- 5:25that that received that letter grading, they were
- 5:27previously a d.
- 5:28And, you know, we intentionally
- 5:31said that is unacceptable,
- 5:33and our communities deserve more. And, you know,
- 5:36we're very, very, very proud of that progress.
- 5:39That B now represents also to us,
- 5:42you know, the top rated,
- 5:45system in our area.
- 5:46But that is not a stopping point for
- 5:48us. We're we're gonna continue to drive improvement
- 5:52across the Illinois region,
- 5:54and the broader system. And so,
- 5:57while that that's,
- 5:59fun and and and exciting to celebrate, we
- 6:01know we still have work to do, and
- 6:03we're gonna get it done.
- 6:05Absolutely. That's great to hear and just a
- 6:07really impressive improvement across the board. And, you
- 6:10know, from your perspective, what made the difference?
- 6:12What did you focus in on and, really,
- 6:15I guess, level up in order to go
- 6:17from a leapfrog b to d?
- 6:19Oh, we went from a we went from
- 6:21a we went from a d to a
- 6:22b. And Yeah. Sorry. Sorry. I'll I'll cut
- 6:24that.
- 6:26What did you really
- 6:27I was gonna say we'd be having a
- 6:28different discussion if it went the other way.
- 6:32But, you know, it it's it's, you know,
- 6:34leadership,
- 6:36our our frontline teams, our physicians,
- 6:38all rolling in the same direction that says
- 6:41say, okay. You know, we're we're taking this
- 6:43serious, and we wanna be the top quality
- 6:46health care system in the in the area.
- 6:49And so, you know, one, it was understanding
- 6:51what is it gonna take to get that
- 6:53done?
- 6:54What are we getting graded on? Where are
- 6:55we where are we not performing,
- 6:58to the best of our abilities, and where
- 6:59do we need to make these improvements?
- 7:02And committing to do that,
- 7:05not just, you know, senior level
- 7:07management saying we're gonna do it and thou
- 7:09shalt, but everybody
- 7:11truly saying, no. This is this is we're
- 7:14getting on board, and we're gonna we're gonna,
- 7:16all hands on deck to to get this
- 7:18done. And so you saw the levels of
- 7:21commitment throughout the organization
- 7:23to make make the, make the improvements that
- 7:26were necessary.
- 7:28And and a lot of it focused on
- 7:30our patient experience, and that is something that,
- 7:33you know, I carried with me from my
- 7:34my first CEO opportunity in in Mount Vernon,
- 7:38throughout the region. And we took that facility
- 7:40to a five star facility,
- 7:42as well up there. And so just a
- 7:45a lot of hard work,
- 7:47but we we had nowhere to go but
- 7:49up. And so,
- 7:51you know, from that perspective, it made things,
- 7:54very clear what that we what we needed
- 7:56to get done.
- 7:57That's great. You know, and really helpful to
- 8:00understand. Thank you for going a little bit
- 8:02deeper there. Now Yeah. Looking ahead, what are
- 8:04some of your big priorities and headwinds for
- 8:062026?
- 8:07Wow. So,
- 8:09as we look forward to '26,
- 8:12of course, a major focus is preparing for,
- 8:15you know, the the financial and operational impact
- 8:19of,
- 8:21OBAMA,
- 8:23one big beautiful bill act,
- 8:25and and what that broader broader picture
- 8:29and what those Medicaid shifts, what that does,
- 8:33to us. And so that is I'm sure
- 8:35I'm I'm one of many, you know, administrators,
- 8:38health care, guys that are that are looking
- 8:41at that.
- 8:42And these changes,
- 8:43they require us
- 8:46to be very disciplined and to also be
- 8:49very proactive. We have to be both.
- 8:52A key priority
- 8:53for us is gonna be strengthen our our
- 8:55revenue cycle,
- 8:56making sure that we are effectively collecting on
- 9:01the work that we're already doing. We're already
- 9:03doing the work. Now we gotta collect on
- 9:05those dollars,
- 9:07making sure we're we're getting cleaner and more
- 9:09efficient at at those processes
- 9:11because it it's gonna be
- 9:13essential for us, you know, sustaining access to
- 9:16to services,
- 9:18in a in a already
- 9:20challenging reimbursement environment. So that that's definitely a
- 9:23priority.
- 9:24At the same time, you know, as a
- 9:26system,
- 9:27we're focused
- 9:28on AI and AI and technology, and not
- 9:32just as a buzzword,
- 9:34but we're we're talking about what
- 9:36tools
- 9:37do,
- 9:38we need to help us do our work
- 9:40better, to to help us do our work
- 9:42smarter and more efficiently.
- 9:44And so we're asking where these tools can
- 9:46be truly,
- 9:48used to enhance our care delivery and our
- 9:51operations,
- 9:53especially as we we navigate these financial pressures.
- 9:56So those are some of the things I'm
- 9:57definitely looking forward to,
- 10:00you know, in in 2026 and and that
- 10:02we're gonna be focused on with these potential
- 10:04headwinds.
- 10:06That makes a lot of sense. And I
- 10:08I know especially looking at some of that
- 10:10access to care, thinking about revenue cycle, thinking
- 10:12about technology,
- 10:14you know, where do you see the technology
- 10:17investments,
- 10:18making the most sense? What are you focused
- 10:20in on on some of those things? Because
- 10:21I know every health care dollar is precious,
- 10:23but,
- 10:24you know, there's a lot out there too.
- 10:26It can really be a a challenge to
- 10:28kind of sift through and weave through all
- 10:29the different potential solutions in getting to the
- 10:32place that really adds the most value to
- 10:34the overall organization. So how do you think
- 10:36about that with your c suite team and,
- 10:38keep everybody focused on the right things?
- 10:41Yeah. I I tell you, there's nothing really
- 10:44off the table on that discussion. And,
- 10:47you know, I'll I'll say, you know, we've
- 10:50had ongoing
- 10:51conversations
- 10:53that, you know, involve
- 10:55every area of the hospital saying, where can
- 10:58we deploy technologies to help us,
- 11:01be more efficient?
- 11:03Where can we deploy technology to,
- 11:06help,
- 11:07you know, our workforce
- 11:08and offset, you know,
- 11:10some of the shortage areas,
- 11:13and truly, you know, how do we enhance
- 11:16our our our workforce and our teams,
- 11:18using additional technology.
- 11:21I I think, you know,
- 11:24we're not using a narrow lens whatsoever.
- 11:28You know, right now, just truly trying to
- 11:30explore
- 11:31what it what what is out there that
- 11:33we can deploy. Can we deploy it very
- 11:35quickly? What's the ROI on it? And,
- 11:39identifying those, testing them out, and then, you
- 11:42know, quickly getting them out to the teams.
- 11:44And so,
- 11:46you know, I I would say that's kind
- 11:48of where we're at as a as a
- 11:49system and a a starting point.
- 11:52Alright. Helpful to understand it. I I love
- 11:55that kind of just continuing to focus in
- 11:57on whatever space makes the most sense at
- 11:59those that time.
- 12:00It seems like a really smart strategy.
- 12:02I think we've alluded to it a little
- 12:04bit, but just with some of the financial
- 12:06challenges,
- 12:07and shortages
- 12:08in the health care industry, what do you
- 12:09think the hardest thing will be that you'll
- 12:11have to do in the next year or
- 12:12so?
- 12:14Oh, man.
- 12:16These are these are some great questions.
- 12:19And I I'm gonna probably take a little
- 12:21bit of different approach on this. So
- 12:23one of the hardest, and I'll say one
- 12:25of the most important things
- 12:28we can do,
- 12:29I can do, as a leader because this,
- 12:31I cannot delegate. A lot of things a
- 12:34lot of leaders, we we'd like to get
- 12:35in this mode of delegation, but I I
- 12:38think one of the key things is truly
- 12:40providing hope.
- 12:43I I I'm I remember a, study Kaufman
- 12:46Hall did a survey on health care on
- 12:49the health care workforce,
- 12:50and what,
- 12:52was identified that people, needed most from leadership,
- 12:55the number one answer was hope.
- 12:58And that really resonated with me, as a
- 13:01as a leader.
- 13:03We have responsibility
- 13:04that comes with these roles. And to be
- 13:07honest,
- 13:08like, the challenges,
- 13:11and, you know, we have to keep, all
- 13:13those things in perspective. They're they're very real.
- 13:16You know? So people want truth. They wanna
- 13:18hear that. They wanna understand
- 13:20the realities that we're facing,
- 13:23but they also want reassurance
- 13:26like other difficult periods in health care in
- 13:29time such as COVID. We all remember COVID,
- 13:32that we are gonna weather the storm.
- 13:35And so the way we frame the future
- 13:38matters.
- 13:39I hope everybody listening understands my point. The
- 13:42way we frame the future
- 13:44in health care, it matters. Whether,
- 13:47we look at it as the glass is
- 13:49half,
- 13:51full
- 13:51or half empty,
- 13:53Our teams are listening. And so our job
- 13:56is to lead with transparency,
- 13:59steadiness,
- 14:00and confidence that we can come out on
- 14:02the other side of this thing stronger.
- 14:05I love that answer, and I think it
- 14:06it definitely,
- 14:08dovetails into so much of what we try
- 14:09to do here at Becker's. And so for
- 14:11that, you know, messaging with the team, understanding
- 14:14hope, they we're really being met with kind
- 14:17of this dual of, like, hey. Here's the
- 14:19reality of our situation, but we also can
- 14:21get through this. We can also do this.
- 14:24Are you doing anything differently this year to
- 14:26really bring that front and center, especially with
- 14:28your,
- 14:29c suite team in in managers, or is
- 14:32it something that you found out out in
- 14:33the past that you're going to continue to,
- 14:36focus on that works well to have that
- 14:38message and to keep people,
- 14:40really, you know, spreading that to their teams
- 14:42as well?
- 14:44Yeah. So
- 14:45in our in our region,
- 14:47you know, we we've now got a a
- 14:49regional structure, and I could spend a whole,
- 14:52probably podcast segment on restructure
- 14:55and, a region and building and culture change.
- 14:59And that's something that I I've focused on
- 15:01over the last,
- 15:03two years in this in this role.
- 15:05And, you know, now, you know, bringing these
- 15:08teams together,
- 15:09there's another level of of transparency,
- 15:13and, you know,
- 15:15bringing these teams to together to to jail
- 15:18and to, you know, share, hey, guys. Here's
- 15:21here's where
- 15:22the bar is at today.
- 15:25And, you know, coming together to to form
- 15:27solutions and say, alright. What do we need
- 15:29to do to to to overcome?
- 15:32And,
- 15:33you know, we're seeing a lot of growth,
- 15:35lot of rapid growth in our in our
- 15:37region.
- 15:39And it it that, you know, is to
- 15:41be celebrated, and it comes with its challenges,
- 15:44you know, that you gotta bring the staffing
- 15:46components with that. You gotta bring the equipment
- 15:48and technology up to date with that.
- 15:51And it's not a one man band over
- 15:53here. It's truly operating and functioning
- 15:56as a team and as a as a
- 15:58as a system,
- 15:59and truly utilizing the the resources to to
- 16:02the best of their our ability.
- 16:05And so
- 16:06we're we're doing a a a lot of
- 16:08that.
- 16:09I won't say,
- 16:11we're we're adding more meetings, but I'm actually
- 16:14trying to give the gift of time back
- 16:16to our teams.
- 16:18And,
- 16:20because we've got a lot of initiatives. We
- 16:22got a lot of objectives.
- 16:24And I've
- 16:25found that, when we tie everybody up in
- 16:28a meeting in meetings all day, it's a
- 16:30little difficult
- 16:32to get all that work done. And so
- 16:34it's truly trying to figure out, you know,
- 16:35how do I give that gift the time
- 16:36back to our teams to to carry out
- 16:38these these objectives and get our mission accomplished.
- 16:42Absolutely. That is helpful to understand. Thank you
- 16:45for digging a little bit deeper.
- 16:47Now before we wrap up, I wanted to
- 16:48think about growth as well. Where do you
- 16:50see some of the best opportunities for organizational
- 16:53growth over the next one or two years
- 16:55or so?
- 16:57Yeah. So, you know,
- 16:59the secret in in rural health care, growth
- 17:02opportunities
- 17:03in rural health care, they they remain consistent,
- 17:06but but crucial
- 17:07is recruitment, both for
- 17:10specialists,
- 17:11for primary care,
- 17:13continues to be a top priority for us,
- 17:17so we can maintain
- 17:18and expand access for these communities.
- 17:21We also see opportunity in the in the
- 17:24continued adoption for telehealth and for AI and
- 17:28for these technologies I talked about earlier, particularly,
- 17:32in ways that we support rural
- 17:34health care delivery,
- 17:37and how we can improve efficiency without losing
- 17:40that human connection,
- 17:41that that you have to have in health
- 17:43care.
- 17:44One area that's especially important,
- 17:47and somewhat to you unique in our our
- 17:50area,
- 17:51We've been challenged with,
- 17:53is OB and women's health services.
- 17:55We're in a in a OB desert here
- 17:58in in Southern Illinois,
- 18:00and addressing that gap is gonna be essential
- 18:03for long term health of our communities
- 18:06and,
- 18:07and ensuring that,
- 18:09you know,
- 18:11access to women's health care and services are
- 18:13are close to home. They they truly remain
- 18:16a key
- 18:17opportunity
- 18:17and
- 18:18and responsibility
- 18:21for our health care system,
- 18:23moving forward. So those are some of the
- 18:25things that we, will be focused on here
- 18:28in in Deaconess, Illinois.
- 18:31I love that. And, you know, expanding that
- 18:33access to care, bringing in more specialists will
- 18:35be truly
- 18:36helpful in transforming the health care system.
- 18:39And when you're thinking about just connecting, building
- 18:41out, especially in the OB space, women's health
- 18:43care,
- 18:44and and really anywhere else that you are
- 18:46looking for for specialists and those kinds of
- 18:48things,
- 18:50do you see being able to,
- 18:52I I guess, how are you continuing to
- 18:55bring in those folks and attract them,
- 18:57anything that is on the cusp for this
- 19:00coming year?
- 19:02Yeah. I I think we, as a system,
- 19:04really have kinda taken a a a step
- 19:06back at our approach when we talk about,
- 19:09you know, recruitment.
- 19:11And also,
- 19:13in addition to recruitment,
- 19:15directly, but partnerships,
- 19:18you know, with FQHCs
- 19:20and RHCs and things like that in the
- 19:22in the area.
- 19:23And so I I think, you know,
- 19:26having,
- 19:27you know, again,
- 19:29a a a very narrow lens that, you
- 19:30you know, are only gonna recruit this one
- 19:32way, which is is, you
- 19:35know, been an approach, but that is not,
- 19:37you know, moving forward. That's not the the
- 19:39the best way. And so, you know, we
- 19:41are expanding our our recruitment team,
- 19:44and and we're gonna be growing that,
- 19:47you know, when,
- 19:49we're all also looking at the way our
- 19:51site visits are are structured.
- 19:53What is the follow-up with,
- 19:55you know, the physicians after a site visit?
- 19:57What does that look like? What is the
- 19:59prep work prior to work? Additionally, of course,
- 20:03leveraging
- 20:04our physicians that work for us that have
- 20:06have ties with, you know, the schools and
- 20:08universities and these other programs and and saying,
- 20:12how how can we, you know, utilize, you
- 20:15know, this this army of physicians that we
- 20:17have to help us continue to to leverage
- 20:19and and,
- 20:20build those pipelines and partnerships. And so,
- 20:24you know,
- 20:25there's no one singular approach,
- 20:28when it comes
- 20:29to, you know, the the recruitment strategy.
- 20:32And and finding the, you know, physicians,
- 20:36APPs, the the caregivers that
- 20:39really love and wanna be a part of
- 20:41rural health care,
- 20:43because it's it's a special place.
- 20:45And I'm not just saying that because I
- 20:46live here, but truly, you know, practicing in
- 20:49in rural areas, you see some things you
- 20:51you thought you'd never seen, and it's exciting
- 20:54to to many,
- 20:55many caregivers,
- 20:57physicians, and APPs.
- 20:58And so we we wanna make sure that
- 21:00it's a a good fit for them and
- 21:03their and and their families as well and
- 21:05making sure we show those, those great things
- 21:08about our areas and these communities we serve.
- 21:11William, thank you so much for joining us
- 21:12on the podcast today. This has been a
- 21:14really inspiring conversation.
- 21:17I have learned a lot. Absolutely. I'm looking
- 21:19forward to seeing you as well at our,
- 21:21annual meeting. I know you'll be speaking on
- 21:22a panel, and we'll,
- 21:24you know, keep, this discussion going.
- 21:27Well, I I want I wanna say before
- 21:29I leave, I I love,
- 21:31you know, the platform that Becker's,
- 21:34is providing,
- 21:36you know, not just me, but health care
- 21:39in general and and continuing to, you know,
- 21:41bring such important
- 21:43topics to the forefront and everyone's attention, bringing
- 21:46light to those things.
- 21:47And,
- 21:48and so I think what what you and
- 21:51and your team is doing is beautiful. I'm
- 21:53looking forward to the to the conference coming
- 21:55up and
- 21:57the connections and and hearing, from my colleagues
- 22:00on on so many topics that we're all
- 22:02challenged with, but what are we all doing
- 22:04to, to overcome those things? And so I'm
- 22:06excited to, be a part of of that,
- 22:09speaking panel. So thank you all again for
- 22:11the invites.
