Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 59 for Friday, June 5th, 2015.
• 0:07
[upbeat music] Because of impending declarations of non-disclosure invention claims and other intellectual ownerships,
• 0:28
may I present a wholly original mil-toast greeting to you, the listeners to the Weekly Dose of Fat with your hosts, Sven and Gomez. Does anybody remember when our site was purple?
• 0:42
I barely remember [laughs] when it was purple. [laughs] Mr. Purple. Well, we'll be here in the studio taking calls from old school and new school fatbikers tonight. We're at 818-918-2453. Give us a call.
• 0:57
Tell us your vote for the best fatbike tire in existence. Current or past? Like, like- Ever- [laughs]... in existence. Exactly. Forever and ever. I mean- How many dwarf planets are there exactly? Or known planets?
• 1:16
Or dwarf planets. Trolled. So obviously we have Mr. JK Living in the studio. Hi. Stream of consciousness and yeah. Today's radio program is sponsored by the 100% Surly Instigator 2.0.
• 1:29
It's made from 4130 chrome moly steel, and has been known to make grommets go, "Whoa- Whoa- Whoa-... dude... dude. Dude, whoa. Learn more at surlybikes.com. Right on. So Mr.
• 1:45
JK, what can we expect on this week's show? Our special guest will be Tyler from Surly with his farewell address to the fatbike nation. [imitates trumpet] [laughs] Very nice.
• 2:03
I could be, I could go on forever. [laughs] The weekly dose of fatness or rapness or rapness and brapness. Michael McHogan is gonna share a dirty Kanza report with us. That was good on that one. Mm-hmm.
• 2:20
We're gonna pimp our radio promo contest, and we have links from all over the Interwebs. All right, lads. Beer stop up around the corner. Derby. Hey, Chris. Thanks for the suggestion.
• 2:37
We've got beer in the house, or on the beach, or wherever we are. [laughs] This week's beer is the pride of the Twin Cities, none other than Grain Belt.
• 2:48
We have both the 16-ounce Big Friendly can and the ever-popular 12-ounce bottle. Mm-hmm. It's got a very light color in that bottle. Like, what can you see through the can? [laughs] Awesome. [laughs] I can see awesome.
• 3:05
Let's, uh- You know, the- It's tasty as hell... the beer, the beer in the can tastes remarkably like the beer in the bottle. Does it? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I think it might have came out of the same vat.
• 3:15
Might have, up there in, uh, New Ulm, Minnesota. Yes. [laughs] No sorcery going on there. [laughs] Mm-mm. You know, it's one of those things where if you're drinking this all day, I kind of get used to it.
• 3:26
If you're switching from another beer, it's got kind of a sour? Yeah. Is that what I'm... Sour, sour taste? Yeah. It's a little more sour than- Yeah... the, um- Mm... Miller High Life that we, uh- Shared...
• 3:37
had the fluff with. A lot like water, that stuff. Yeah. But this is an- [burps]... American adjunct lager. What the heck's an adjunct lager? Well, it's a addition or not necessarily a real lager. A supplement.
• 3:51
A- [laughs] A supplement or a parasite or something. I'm not sure what... [laughs] Not- I know that my friend Ox, his wife always says that this beer gives him the wind like- [laughs]... one of Billy's business.
• 4:06
[laughs] Well- Well, as, as an audience member here. [laughs] Hallelujah, my brother. So- Yeah. [laughs]... you know, over at The Beer Advocate, it does score a 75, which is a little better than our fluffer beer.
• 4:18
[laughs] And, uh, 4.6 ABV. Oh, yeah. I don't think we have any IBUs. Maybe a sour, sour ex-girlfriend, but- Hmm... it's not a bitter. It's not bitter. Maybe that's what makes it an, an adjunct, is that sour taste.
• 4:33
Mm, maybe. It's not bitter, though. I can tell you that much. It's a thing that makes it more foamy, is what I- Yeah... half-read when I- Huh... half-looked. All right. Well- [laughs] We're, we're no damn- Definition...
• 4:44
we're no damn beer experts here- We're-... but we do tend to drink a little bit of it, so. I, I talked- And-... I talked to our, uh, former beer expert, Colin Ford, today. Nice. Did you talk about Grain Belt at all?
• 4:55
We did not. You know what? That dude is getting to test a new bike for us. Yeah. What's he getting? A Lenz Fatallack. I like the name. Fatallack. Dual sus- dual suspension- Right on... 29 plus.
• 5:11
Good guy for it, 'cause Colin can shred. Yeah. He's gonna tear it up out there in Denver on that bike for a few weeks, and we'll have a couple of reports on our new website, www.plusbikes.com. Right on.
• 5:26
So are we done with this beer talk yet? I don't know. You know, what's there to say about Grain Belt? That was such a weird Grain Belt. That was it. It's like these things just go down like water- True...
• 5:35
and, uh- Beer water. Truth. And beer water definitely has its place. I believe that's the first time I drank this beer w- had, was in Decorah, for sure. Could've been Platteville, though. Yeah?
• 5:45
Out, out in western Wisconsin or northeast Iowa, one of those two. The bar I used to walk past to get to, uh, school from K through, uh, six had a big, uh, had a, had a Grain Belt sign on, over the, over the walkway.
• 5:59
Did anybody ever invite you in? Oh, it was a really weird place, man. Yeah, the, our next door neighbor owned the bar with his brother, so, uh, just a couple blocks away. Right on.
• 6:09
But that smell of beer, stale beer, and, uh, I guess cigarette smoke [laughs] Probably... just stuck with me. I could like walk into another bar here in Milwaukee and be like, "Oh man, boomers."
• 6:21
[laughs] I lo- I love that smell. So this, this week's beer stop was sponsored by Uncle Dick's Bead Slip. You can check out more at uncledicksbikeshop.com.
• 6:33
Yeah, just brought a little, uh, it, Smell-O-Vision into radio there. [laughs] Kinda cool, huh? Smell-O-Vision- [laughs]... in stereo.
• 6:41

• 7:28
Hey, caller, who do we have here? Oh, this is, uh, Tyler. Tyler, welcome to the show, bro. Thank you. How's Tyler doing? Tyler's doing okay.
• 7:41
I mean, uh, it was a little rainy, but now it's sunny, so everything's pretty sweet. All right. You getting ready for the big going away party there? Yeah. Yeah. I am, uh, I...
• 7:52
Well, I wouldn't say I'm getting ready for it, but I'm, I'm doing whatever I can to prepare myself for whatever sort of drag me out into the woods and murder me sort of scenario I'll be looking at on my last ride day.
• 8:05
[laughs] We, we like to say scenario down here in the real world. [laughs] Oh, I'm sorry. Sorry. I'm sorry. Scenario. Scen- Is that better? No, that's perfect. So- You'll fit right in in California.
• 8:19
You're leaving the bike industry, and I was thinking today, since you're headed out to Hollywood,
• 8:26
you should maybe write a screenplay, call it Life in the Fat Line, like the greasy story of the liquor and [laughs] shenanigans behind the, the, uh, the fat bike gold rush of the Twin Cities. Wow.
• 8:42
It's almost like you're living inside my brain. [laughs] It- Practically writes itself. [laughs] Yeah, I mean, [laughs] a story like that- [laughs]...
• 8:52
there, there's clearly, at the very least, tens, if not hundreds, of people who are interested- [laughs]... in seeing a movie like that. Oh, yeah. Well, you gotta spice it up with like sex, drugs- Porn. [laughs] Porn.
• 9:04
[laughs] Yeah. Song. Start in the valley. Like, like, uh- Gotta go to the valley first... I think even, even with all the sex and drugs, I still think I'd only be a hundred.
• 9:11
[laughs] Well, one of the things I think is interesting about you moving out to the- There can only be so many retellings of me and Trevor having sex. [laughs] [laughs] Don't sell that story short, my friend. Right on.
• 9:26
[laughs] So o- one of the things I think might be interesting, I'm not sure if this is how it's gonna pan out, but you're moving to a place where, uh, they're actually behind the times for once.
• 9:35
Usually, the Midwest is a little bit behind the times from the coasts, and in this case, I think you're gonna find out there that people don't know even what the hell a fat bike is in a lot of cases, so. Oh.
• 9:44
Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. A couple... Uh, a year and a half ago, I made a trip to LA on a Moonlander, and I had a couple of dudes almost run me off the road in their car to ask me where I bought it.
• 9:55
You know, "Where the fuck do you get a bike like that? Holy shit, I want a bike," you know? [laughs] Like, full on run you off the road and then ask you where they can buy a bike like the one you're riding.
• 10:03
You gotta love rabid fans like that. Yeah, no crap. Yeah, it's hard to beat. It's hard to beat. But definitely, like people there, as far as beach riding goes, they have no clue.
• 10:12
They, they're still convinced there's no such bike as a bike that they can ride on a beach. Wow.
• 10:16
Well, Gomez and I had such a great ride in Monterey there that I would, uh, I'd recommend checking out that Pacific shore there on your bicycle if you can. Yeah, man, and you're s- I sure will. Just- I sure will.
• 10:27
I'm gonna be, uh, pretty close to Venice Beach, and I plan on exploring probably 100 miles in either direction. No doubt. That's killer. Gotta get to Mexico, too. Well, yeah. Just- [laughs] Shoulda...
• 10:39
I think there's a lot right there. I think that goes without saying. [laughs] Just for the bike, get it, dude. You know, I've, I've, I've read about the beach bikes before. I heard about them Spanish Fly.
• 10:47
[laughs] But I ain't never seen 'em. Oh. I ain't never seen them things. So, uh, I have a note here that says, "Tyler's love fest?" Care to make a comment on that? [laughs] Uh-huh. You got- Uh, [laughs]
• 11:03
I would just add two more question marks at the end. [laughs] It's sort of the kind of thing you have to see to believe. [laughs] But I'm a big dude, so lots of people can fit around me.
• 11:13
I'll just give you that as a f- as a mental image. All right. Well, I was thinking maybe, you know- And I've got, I've got hair, so I create friction, so it's hard to slide off. The last- [laughs]
• 11:23
The last time you were on the show, you know, you said that you had so much love for, for the fat bikers out there in the internet land, um, that I think that that's why I w- wrote that note.
• 11:34
It's all coming back to me in a rush of, uh- Oh, oh, oh, I probably did say that, but that was before the, that was before all the other fat bikes. Now I don't have any love for fat bikers anymore.
• 11:43
[laughs] Wait, am I allowed to say that? [laughs] Am I allowed to say that on this show? Never mind. I love all fat bikers. [laughs] This is a- I can't wait till Wednesday, the 10th of June...
• 11:55
this is a, an open forum for your thoughts. Yeah, I mean, what are they gonna do tomorrow? You're, you'll just walk in and your, your key fob won't work, right? That's-[laughs] QC load runner.
• 12:08
I always, I always check my email before I leave home to make sure my email's still working, and if my email's still working, then I go to work. Very good. But such a, that's a good way to look at it.
• 12:17
I, I think that you simplified the universe- And I think if-... for a lot of people. [laughs] Yeah. If your email's shut off in the morning for any random reason, that's a good reason to call in sick. You should.
• 12:27
[laughs] Call in sick until they, until they turn your email back on. Oh, no, no. That's a good morning to go in, slip, fall, break your elbow or twist your back- Ooh, I like this. I like this...
• 12:40
on your way to- Classic American dream... just like when you're, when you have your hand on the front door. No, that's why you keep your hand- Slip and fall. Ba-da, ba-da, bam...
• 12:48
you keep your hands in your pockets if you're starting to fall because you're definitely gonna break a bone. Oh. Oh. That is a good call. I got learned by that. Probably a nose or something. Nope, arm.
• 12:59
So Tyler- Our, our new segment, Bonko Squad. [laughs] How to, how to damage yourself intentionally.
• 13:07
It's a, it's a good thing you're leaving Surly because- I've always, I've always said to people that, that one of the major problems with fat bikes is they give you so much confidence and they're so easy to ride on trails, that it, it takes out the whole who am I gonna sue factor.
• 13:18
Mm-hmm. Yeah, true that. I'm gonna sue the, my cheek muscles hurt from smiling so much. [laughs] Peop- people see me on the trail and I'm sure they're like, "Wow, that guy liked me." [laughs] Or- Or, "No.
• 13:36
Look how, look how happy that boy looks." "He's kind of creepy." [laughs] Have you seen that, have you seen that sad old flirt out on the trail? [laughs] I know. All he does is- He's always got a big grin on his face...
• 13:45
smile at me. I think he likes me. So- I've got Trevor here with me. You wanna say hi to Trevor? Oh, sure. Trevor is, Trevor, it'll be his first time on the show. Trevor, it's first time on fatbike.com. Here it is.
• 14:00
Hey, Trevor. Hey. [laughs] Hi. How's it going, man? Oh, just feeling pretty randy here, standing next to Tyler, cracking a couple beers. What are you guys, what are you guys drinking for the beer segment of the show?
• 14:14
Uh, we're drinking Sierra Nevada Beer Camp, the very last six-pack available at my local store. Wow.
• 14:20
Speaking of beer camp, we have a new, uh, we have a new podcast that a couple of friends of ours are doing called Fat Camp.
• 14:26
You can catch that on, uh, June 13th, I think is our next episode, but, uh, those guys are not anywhere near as entertaining as we are, but they know a hell of a lot more than we do.
• 14:35
Yeah, they're gonna talk about- [laughs] They're gonna talk about how- At least about beer-... pump sizes... and being fat, or [can opening] both. Yeah.
• 14:41
[laughs] No, they actually ride their bikes, and they don't drink as much beer as we do, I don't think. [laughs] Oh. I think they even race their bike. Oh, the, you said the R word. Ooh. Race.
• 14:51
[laughs] We don't entertain racists around here. Uh- This is, uh, Minnesota. [laughs] No race here. Never mind, we do actually, once you get out of the city. That's- Are you feeling lucky tonight?
• 15:05
Is it, is that, would that be, like, a good thing to feel before a Dungeons & Dragons, uh, tournament, uh, like you're facing tonight?
• 15:14
Uh, well, well, Tyler and I are, are definitely feeling lucky because, you know, post-Dungeons & Dragons is when we get to cuddle and, uh- [laughs]...
• 15:21
talk about our, you know, healing spells and flaming swords with each other. Flaming swords. And bags of holding. Yeah. [laughs] Are, are there, are there- Oh, yes. Yeah.
• 15:31
It's all, it- It's all about the bags of holding... the bag of holding is bleeding full. [laughs] You can fit a fat bike in that bag of holding. Hmm. For Sue. You can fit a fat bike in a bag of holding. Yep.
• 15:43
Extra dimensional spaces work wonders- So one D10 roll for that one... with, uh, you know, if you plan to overpack for bike rides. Now you're s- you're gonna, you're s- No, you don't even have to roll for that shit.
• 15:53
[laughs] [laughs] So you're still gonna be- You just fucking keep on stuffing until the DM tells you that your bag is full. [laughs] You're, you're still gonna be at Surly, Trevor, right?
• 16:07
This is what we have for our actual fat bike rides. They're all like this, you know. You're not going anywhere, are you? [laughs] What's that? I said you're not actually, uh, you're not actually leaving Surly, are you?
• 16:15
No, no, no. I'm, I'm with you till the grim, bitter end. I'm gonna see this fucking brand into the grave. Atta boy. Which may be next year, so yeah. [laughs] You got, you got the one-year plan going. There you go.
• 16:30
There you go. Y- yeah, yeah. Lots of good things are looking good, you know. Well, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. We finally got rid of Tyler and [laughs] Yeah.
• 16:36
Well, so how long did you guys work together 'cause I know you've been a, been buds for a while. What's it been like working with him? Uh, uh, Tyler's been a breash of, uh, a, a breash, a, a breash of flesh air.
• 16:49
No, a breath of fresh air. Is that how that goes? [laughs] Or a breeze of fat air, maybe- [laughs]... is more like it.
• 16:59
No, like, Ty- Tyler's been fucking awesome to work with, and we are gonna be sorely missing him when he leaves, in all honesty. Yeah, me too. There, there are genuine tears coming to my eyes right now, by the way.
• 17:11
I, I'm gonna miss Tyler. Yep. He's good. Mm-hmm. You know, it'd be nice, though, we got a guy to visit in Southern California now, too. Yeah. Tyler actually said that he might- This is true, 'cause I- Go ahead. Go ahead.
• 17:22
Oh, he just said that he might do some writing for us when he gets out there. Yeah, some vogony poetry- It depends on... or something. Something where I would need to be- I'm on the road. I'm very Kerouac-ian...
• 17:33
[laughs] where I would need to be strapped to a chair, and then he would read the poetry to me. [laughs] Yeah.
• 17:41
You know, I think, I think a, a, a viewpoint from, from Southern California in a non-plastic dimension is, is what is, is what is needed. So I, I think that could work out quite well. Well, right on.
• 17:55
Anybody else there at the party that, uh, that we wanna talk to? Well, we could- No, we're the, we're the first people here... we could bring in somebody from- Bob's not here yet...
• 18:02
from the, uh, interwebs that's calling in and see, uh, see who wants to talk to, uh, Trevor or Tyler. Do, do, do, do, do, do, do. Do it Hey, welcome to the radio program.
• 18:15
We've got, uh, Tyler and Trevor from Surly on the line. Who am I talking to now? You are talking to an official rack tester. This is Evan, and I am currently riding my bicycle. [laughs] Wow.
• 18:29
Let me know if I need to stop. [laughs] Have you been riding it for the entire nine minutes you've been waiting? We are delaying the phone call. [laughs] I can, I can stop if I need to. Do I need to stop?
• 18:39
No, you sound all right. I was just wondering if you'd been waiting for the entire nine minutes while you were riding.
• 18:45
I've been trying to listen to the show, uh- Or riding for the entire nine minutes you've been waiting to... There you go. Sweet, sweet. Yeah, yeah.
• 18:52
So Evan, Evan is- As long as you're not texting, it's, it's totally cool. [laughs] No, no, just riding. I'm riding with, uh, one of my, uh, Flag bike, uh, constituents, Norm. Ah, Norm. I know that cat.
• 19:06
And, uh, we're just, uh... Yeah. We're just riding- Trevor, you'd like Norm. You probably know Norm, Trevor. No. He's a bike shop guy. Excuse me.
• 19:17
So Evan, what's- So I'm talking such to the Sur- Surly people, all I want to say is thank you because, uh, that Pugsley that I got, it's fucking badass. I, uh- Changed your life... found the bike of me, but.
• 19:35
Oh, you still there? Yep, still here. Yeah, Evan rides a purple Singlespeed Pug- Pugsley. I'm gonna stop. I feel like I can't hear anything. [laughs] Thank God. Okay. I almost got a dick punch there.
• 19:51
[laughs] Top of the hill. Well, we, uh- Beer stop. Beer stop coming up. Yeah, do you boys, you boys, you boys got a flask or anything? 'Cause we do. Yeah. Yeah. I guess I'm gonna dip into.
• 20:01
You guys should, uh, open a beer 'cause- Oh, damn it... looks like I'm on my, uh- We just barely made it back-... 300 beer... to my place in time to, to call in for this, so. Oh, it was a, it was a good- No, no...
• 20:11
good timing. So, uh- I, I, I love that Surly, that I haven't ridden any of my other bikes.
• 20:18
I mean, I've got a nice little old Squish 29er, and that thing hasn't come out of the stables yet this year 'cause, uh, I'm just having too much fun.
• 20:26
Yeah, if I had a nickel for every time I heard that story, that's, that's always, that's always a good one to hear.
• 20:32
Yeah, and, and not to mention that, uh, my buddies that I went out with, he was on a, what, a Giant Tran, some other full squish bike, and, uh, I was just... I was stomping on him. It was great.
• 20:43
[laughs] That's talent and a great bike. [laughs] All right, Evan. Hey, do you have a, do you have a- I give it to the machine... do you have a favorite tire of all time to, to tell us? A favorite tire?
• 20:57
I, I mean- Pan flat tire... it's the one that came with the bike right now. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, that one, uh, what, what, what is it? The Nard. That Nard is, uh, I, I think it's awesome. I use it in the snow.
• 21:07
I didn't have any problems with it. You use it on my mom. With... Use it on my mom. [laughs] Use it on the woman. You know, I like to- Everybody else's mom probably...
• 21:16
I like to pronounce that- You, you're using the four-inch on your mom or the five-inch on your mom? You gotta go four. Which meant like- You can't go, you can't go five on mom... you gotta go four.
• 21:24
No, mom can't take all five inches. No way, my mom- Well, admit- My mom likes the five. Yeah, which of course means Moonlander operational mode. [laughs] You can't go too far. Just labor.
• 21:36
So I like- What, like, what rating does this show have? Um, explicit. Explicit. [laughs] It, it, it has the one where everybody calls and says you guys are too drunk.
• 21:44
Yeah, somebody complained and, that we were too drunk last week, and I assure you, I have been more drunk than I was last week. Been way drunker than that.
• 21:51
There's absolutely no way I was the drunkest I've ever been last week. Yeah, no. But, well, you know that's true because there's no such thing. [laughs] All right. [laughs] Oh, dude, you can't start starting now, bro.
• 22:06
[laughs] What, what, Spud story? Apparently I can. Dude. It sucks. That looks like a cop. All right. It's like- [laughs] All right, boys.
• 22:17
I think he's looking right at me, and I'm drinking a beer right now holding a phone up to my face. Yeah, well, what, what else would you be doing- Uh-oh... besides riding your Surly? He's not moving. He's not moving.
• 22:28
You boys better disperse. Okay, here's what I would do in this situation. Leave. I'd, I'd flip, I'd flip the guy off and just see- I was just-...
• 22:35
just, just try to kind of see what mood he's in by giving him the finger real quick. [laughs] All right, well- I'm on the radio. Do you want to talk to him?
• 22:43
Thanks for being on the show and getting arrested on our show, man. Maybe we could raffle off that- That's why-... carbon frame for his bail. [laughs] Nice. Punched the microphone.
• 22:53
I find that a well-placed, uh, buck tooth face replaces a finger every, every day. Oh, there you go. You make a, you make a good solid buck tooth face to somebody and that makes them just as angry as a finger anyway.
• 23:05
Yeah. Oh, man. That is- Yeah, I have to, I have to get away from the finger. Kind of like Gary Busey? All right. I have to get away from the finger and spitting for some reason. I used to spit a lot. Oh, dear.
• 23:17
Get out of there. You know, when... Back in the day when I used to live in LA, my brother used to, my brother and I used to bark at people who yelled at us outside in their cars. Oh. Like a chihuahua or like a pit bull?
• 23:28
You bark like a dog. You bark like a big dog? Barking like a dog is really effective. [laughs] Depending on mood. [laughs] Hold on. [barks] My, my. Arsenio Hall days. [laughs] Scares,
• 23:42
scares the living shit out of people. You got empties too, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah, I got a couple empties with me. Am I still on the air? Yep. Yeah. You bet, buddy. Oh, shit. [laughs] All right, Evan. All right.
• 23:55
Well, I'm gonna start pedaling again. Nice roll. Thank you, guys, uh, for having me on, and just, uh, those bikes, Surly, fantastic. Just all around, I love it. Right on, Evan. Thanks for testing the rack for us too.
• 24:07
I appreciate it. We look forward to what you learn about it, and, uh, call in anytime. Yeah. All right, dudes. Yeah, we just did the swap, and, uh, looking forward to seeing how this thing handles everything.
• 24:16
All right, give Norm a- [sighs] Give, give Norm a sharp slap on the ass and go ride your bike. Tallyho. Tallyho. You got it. You got it. Tallyho. Tallyho. [laughs] Tallyho. All right, so- Tallyho...
• 24:31
so can we get Tyler on for, for his, like, his last final goodbye? We've had Tyler on for a couple minutes, man. Hey, Tyler. It's Gomez. How are you? [laughs] What you doing?
• 24:43
I was the guy, I was the guy barking a minute ago. Very good. I knew that was you. That was me barking.
• 24:48
So dude, do you have any- Yeah, I do have some, I do have some final, some final words of wisdom I'd like to share, which is always... No, wait. Never... No, wait.
• 24:56
Always carry a litter bag in your car, 'cause if it fills up, you can just throw it out the window. [laughs] Very good. Right down I-80 on the way to California. On the sweet way to Cali. All right, my man.
• 25:10
Well, we're gonna miss you, but, you know- We do have, we do have-... I look forward to hear- to riding with you again... we do have a phone number he can call anytime he needs a little pat on the back. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 25:18
You can call on the show. You can write. You can- As long as it's between the hours of 8:00 and 9:00 Central Standard Time... this isn't the end of Lord of the Rings.
• 25:24
It's not like he's [laughs] going to- Let's, all right, let's, let's write pop music and screenplays and, and stuff. [static] All right, see you later. [laughs] See ya. Thank you. Have a good one. So long. Bye.
• 25:37
Bye, bye, Tyler. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. We got Mike McColgan on the line. Oh, let's talk to Michael. No, we don't. Did he give up? Yeah, I think you do. No, we did. [laughs] Yes, we do. [laughs] Welcome.
• 25:54
Welcome, Mike. Welcome to the show, live. Yeah. I heard a beep-y thing, so that means I'm on the air now, right? That means you're talking- Yeah... live to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio.
• 26:02
How can we help you, Mike McColgan? [laughs] Well, I was just calling to say hi, see how you guys are doing. Just got done with Dirty Kanza on the Krampus. That's the DK 100. Yeah. That's why he's gone.
• 26:12
That is- DK, yeah... that is what a Krampus is super sweet at, is a long just flying ride like that. Yeah. It was, it was awesome. Yeah.
• 26:23
I- So- I suppose I theoretically could get a faster time on an ultra-light gravel bike, but I wouldn't have been having anywhere near on the downhills. Yeah. So what tires did you run?
• 26:35
I had, I just switched over to the Maxxis Chronicles. Maxxis Chronicles. So- How do they roll on the gravel?
• 26:41
They roll real nice, and I was, uh, the big decision maker was in, with the, uh, extra flat protection, 'cause the Flint Hills- Yeah... the gravel is known for shredding tires. Sure. Right on.
• 26:51
I did 100 miles, never, no flats, so that was, it was a tire of luck, but I'll take either/or. Is that race 100% gravel? Uh, maybe I guess 99.8, 'cause you start in town. [laughs] Yeah. But, but half the street. Yep.
• 27:08
[laughs] So yeah, you pretty much, I mean, you, you leave town, and it's all gravel. It's, uh, the guys doing the 200 are absolutely crazy. I'm hoping to be absolutely crazy in two years.
• 27:19
Are you, are you- Mike, you're half- I'm half crazy right now... so you're, you're in, you're a Link- you're in Lincoln, right? Is that where you're based? Omaha. Omaha, okay. So- 10 diff- You have a- 10 difference...
• 27:29
right, right. Well, 50 miles or whatever, right? Pardon me? How far is it? Yeah, about fi- about 50 mile. Right. Have you... So one of the guys that does, has done really well in the Dirty Kanza 200 is, uh, Steve Goetz.
• 27:42
I mean, he owns a shop in Des Moines called 30th Century Bicycle. Long-haired, hippie-looking guy in the old days. Looks clean cut these days. Good friend. Uh- Hey, Steve.
• 27:53
I hope you did all right if you were in it this year. So Michael, you know, I've heard a lot about this race, and why don't you tell us a little bit about what the Dirty Kanza is?
• 28:05
Like, where it's held and maybe explain some of the mysteries about it. It is, uh, Emporia, Kansas. So it's about four hours south of Omaha in the Flint Hills. So they have like the, the, the rock formations there.
• 28:22
They, like I said, they're known for shredding tires. This, this was the 10-year anniversary of the original Kanza, and as, as it's grown, they've gotten, given you a little more options to get more people into it.
• 28:34
Used to be strictly a 200-mile race. Now you can do 100, you can do a 50, or you can just do a quick little 20-mile jaunt. A lot of the support crews did that, and it's, it's pretty much you're on your own.
• 28:46
You gotta get from town to town carrying your own stuff. I mean, the true nature of a gravel race is, you know- Right, unsupported... you better have it on you or you're screwed.
• 28:56
[laughs] Or you can, or you can buy it at a, at a gas station, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and that's the one thing, though, with the, with this race, once you get out there, you're, you're out there. For us it was, uh,
• 29:10
57 miles to the first checkpoint, and you see a farmhouse here and there, but I didn't see any, I didn't see any signs of any other small towns- Wow... until I got to the small town Cottonwood Falls. How about cows?
• 29:23
Are there cows out there? [laughs] Oh, yeah. Yeah. I, uh- 'Cause I like to talk to cows when I'm on long rides. Yes. [laughs] They took us through private, they took us through private land, so there was no fencing.
• 29:32
So the cows were on the road. Oh. We're weaving through the crowd. We- like weaving through a crowd of cows. Right on. That sounds, sounds fantastic. And then at one point I started talking shit to the cows.
• 29:41
[laughs] So- Did they talk back? Now cow-ing is a cow. So, so here, Michael, not only are you a cage fighter, fat biker, Dirty Kanza rider, you're also a cowboy now. A co- a cow whisperer. I- Yeah.
• 29:55
Well, it was when- [laughs]... I was nice to the cows when they were not fenced in. Yeah. And I was about 85 miles into the race, and there was- Oh, no... a cow behind the fence, and they started,
• 30:05
they started mooing at me, so I started talking back to them. I was like, "You're gonna talk shit? I'm gonna- [laughs]... I'm not gonna take that." Yeah, you always just- I'll be nice- You always just have to say-...
• 30:13
until it's time to not be nice... you know, that's nice. Future steak. [laughs] Mm, delicious animal. I'm gonna eat you later. All right. Well, did you see any, uh, any of our friends on the- Uh, Adam-... on your trip?
• 30:29
Mr. Fatty Lumpkin himself was down there for Boo. Yeah. Making sure all his people had their particulars set, and, uh, our resident female sock tester, Ms. Andrea Cohen. There you go.
• 30:41
She had, uh, third place in her age group. Really? Right on. She, she's very fast. So you said you rode your Krampus. Did you see other Krampi and/or other fat bikes on the, on the route? Uh, yeah.
• 30:56
There was actually a surprising number. I saw two other guys on Krampus, Krampi, and, uh- [laughs]... but, uh, quite a few. The Mukluk was real popular. I just seemed to, I kept seeing the Salsa Mukluk over and over.
• 31:08
It's 'cause it's an adventure bike. Surprising fat bike. Yeah, it's Adventure By Bike or- Yeah, it's for adventuring on And, uh, and Joe Stiller- They gave up on, they gave up on- Joe Stiller did a 200 on Borealis. Oh.
• 31:20
Oh. Oh, yeah, 200. Oh, that sounds good. They, [laughs] they gave up on Ride and Smile, and then they went with Adventure By Bike. Right. Yeah. And that's- E- either way, though. Yeah.
• 31:32
Because why do we do- It's a good way... why do we this, why, [laughs] why do we, why do we do this- Get out your box of rad... show again? Because good people need better fat bikes. [laughs] Exactly.
• 31:42
You are good and crazy, you're out here riding and smiling. [laughs] Riding and smiling. And fat bikes need good people. Yes, on their fat bikes. And good people need fat bikes.
• 31:53
So Mike, do you wanna hang out on the line? I'm here. We've, we've got another caller. We're just gonna check in with the caller. You wanna hang out? We'll talk after, uh- Sure. Okay.
• 32:00
Let's see, let's see what we got going here. Sure. This is an interactive radio show. Hello. Yeah, it's POV time. [laughs] Yeah, hello. Yeah, hello? Hey, how's it going, eh? Welcome to Fat- I'm all right.
• 32:12
How you guys doing? I, I'm doing good. So are you calling from the, uh, from the Planet Earth to tell us the, uh, your favorite fat bike tire of all time? Uh, the ones with the spiders on them. You like the spider tires?
• 32:27
Those few. Ah, Innova spider tires. That is going old school. They roll nice, though. Yeah. I remember that from the olden days. Yeah. Yeah. They make cool tracks. Them spider tires. Yeah.
• 32:39
Yeah, that's what I'm all about. Cool, cool tracks. No, guys, what's up? This is, uh, Andrew Willoid. Andrew the Maker. Hey, Andy. ATM Handmade Goods. Andy. Dude, I know who you are. God, I sound weird. Sure do.
• 32:55
[laughs] I sound [laughs] Sure do. [laughs] Spider tires. Whoops. [laughs] Yeah. What's going on, guys?
• 33:06
Uh, we're just here talking with, uh, Michael Nicolet, and he did the Dirty Kanza 100 on his, uh, Krampus. I'm saying uh. Yeah? Sorry, I was, slap me every time I say uh. Uh. Got it.
• 33:20
[laughs] You're too far away, and I have these short [laughs] short little man arms. I know. [laughs] Yeah, that was, uh, that was a pretty, uh, pretty nasty, uh, event.
• 33:33
Yeah, that's what we didn't ask Michael about- I heard... is about the conditions. It was kind of muddy, right? It was a little muddy. It, it was deep. There was, uh, there was three miles of hiking.
• 33:41
[laughs] Three miles of hiking. Was it all in, all in one- That was like-... one pitch? Or was it- Yeah, in one section. [sighs] Yeah, you just came around the corner and you said, "Fuck," for about an hour.
• 33:53
[laughs] So [laughs] so that was just it. It was everybody's like, "Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck." Yeah. I, I hit it and- Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck... I, you know, everybody's on there.
• 34:04
60 yards into it, then I'm like, "Oh, this doesn't stop, so I'm gonna get off and walk now, too." So on the fat bike, could you have ridden? Thought it was gonna be super cool.
• 34:12
The, the shorter sections where some of the cross guys, it was like, you know, 20, 30 yards of mud. So I'm like, "Yeah, I'm, I'm just bombing through this."
• 34:18
I made it my goal to hit every mud puddle I could find on the course, and I think I was successful. I like to, I like to sometimes think- If you see the picture of my bike on Facebook...
• 34:28
that that's, when I'm, when I'm riding really poorly, that that's my goal, is to hit every rock on the trail. [laughs] If you look at the rock, you will hit the rock. That's how it goes sometimes. Yep.
• 34:39
So, uh, Andy, are you, are you still in the KC area? I am. Great, huh? I am. How's the scene there lately? I know that you guys lost Burnsy a while back, but what's, uh, what's the fat bike scene like in Kansas City?
• 34:53
Well, um, ever since Burnsy, Burnsy's gone, you know, it's, we pretty much don't ride anymore. Oh. [laughs] Now that Tyler's leaving Surly, I bet nobody buys a Surly anymore, either. [laughs] Oh, I don't know about that.
• 35:04
There you go. [laughs] Don't you, don't you hang out with, with Thad and go for rides? Uh, I see, I see Thad from time to time. Yeah. He, uh, he, uh, him and his Eight Lumens crew, you know, they, uh, they get down.
• 35:18
You know, they do their thing.
• 35:20
I am- I put on a race here, uh, in a couple, let's see, July, I think is when it is Well, Andy's gonna have to say that he rides his bike so I can say Surly's gonna sell some more bikes, otherwise this went horribly wrong.
• 35:33
[laughs] Oh. [laughs] Top of the hill. Oh. Oh, boy. Oh, there's an, there's an opener.
• 35:40
[bottles clink] So are you- Yeah, we're waiting for it to, uh, we're waiting for it to dry out here so we can actually ride bikes again. Yeah, you guys have had a lot of weather. So. It's been a wet spring. Yeah.
• 35:51
Sh- [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] There goes, there goes JK. It's not even, it's not even the- Beer and Irish tourism... beer, it's moist nose. Not even moist. Hey, yeah, I'll take one of those bottles.
• 36:03
You just go and get more beer. I know. I know. Are you guys- I know you have a beer vent... are you having a beer in here? I know I'm at tap out. Uh, no. I'm, I'm, uh, this is work hours right now, so, uh, not yet.
• 36:15
Are you- Yeah, you don't wanna sew your f- your, you don't wanna sew your finger to your testicle. So you're vodka? I haven't sewed my finger to anything yet being drunk, so. All right. Well, that applies.
• 36:25
There's always a first time. Exactly. Are you working on JK's bag yet? Uh, we have- Yeah, we, I'm wait- waiting on the template.
• 36:33
I got, uh, an email from him earlier today, uh, with a picture of the bike so we can kinda figure out what we wanna do for colors on it. Right on.
• 36:42
Well, it's, I mean, this is the whole idea of having you work with, uh, with JK, is that you guys are going through the whole process, so we really know how it works when somebody wants to order a custom bag.
• 36:52
Uh, especially for a bike- Right... like he has, which there's only like, I don't know, what, five of those bikes in the world probably. So it's not like it's a cookie cutter- Yeah... um, a bag that you can buy at Kmart.
• 37:03
You're actually gonna have to- No... totally customize this thing. So this is gonna be a fun, a fun thing, and we're gonna, you know, follow this and have a story about that on the old website here- Yeah... at one point.
• 37:13
Plus, we hope that it, that- Yeah, yeah... that he gives you some kinda challenge, that you do something, uh, something unique and- Well, he- And hopefully not illegal- Yeah, he wanted-... totally.
• 37:24
Well, he wanted a, he said he wanted a pocket on the inside for, I think he said a flashlight, but- Flask. Flask. Flashlight. Flashlight. [laughs] The flashlight and the- A flashlight...
• 37:35
the flashlight and then the flask. Kinda the combo platter. Right. If you wear those things- Those are those nights, you know, those nights [laughs] when you need both. It's- Oh, yeah. [laughs] Kerosene and a flashlight.
• 37:49
So, I mean, wouldn't you combine those into one product? That's what I'm saying, man. Yeah. Combine them into one pro- oh. [laughs] A flasklight? A fle- a flashlight. A flasklight. Oh.
• 37:58
[laughs] A flashlight that also fills with whiskey. Yes, if it was an auto-fill flask, that's where I'm headed. [laughs] I think there's a lot more, a lot more customers out there for that model.
• 38:08
This is where stream of consciousness, Michael, [laughs] just came in again. [laughs] No way, that's from, that's from Dave Gray's interview, where he said the s- 2020 Surly was gonna be a time machine- Oh, yeah... uh,
• 38:22
combination that produces intoxicating beverages and massages with a gentle touch. [laughs] So did your words. So I had no idea [laughs] what you just said. The content of that just went psh right over the head. Well.
• 38:40
Yeah. Sorry. Do you want me to repeat it? [laughs] I also wanted to, uh, I w- I wanted to, uh, ask you guys some questions too while I was on the phone with you.
• 38:49
Well, once these guys are done choking on their own vomit- [laughs]... we'll go ahead and s- Just- Go ahead and ask some questions... where. So what's the, uh, what's the deal with this Kenda Juggernaut tire?
• 39:01
The Juggernaut was a, an attempt to make a super light tire, and, uh- Yeah. How's it holding up? Uh, both of our samples failed on that tire. Yeah, they, well- Oh... here's, here's the thing.
• 39:12
They were really pushing the envelope to try and see what they could do, and I think they just kind of tore the, kind of the flap off of it, and now they have to go back, put the flap back on.
• 39:23
But, you know, if you're like an F1 team, where you can afford brand-new tires for every race, they're super light. They're v- actually ride pretty well, and, uh, you know.
• 39:32
Yeah, the tread actually was working really well. Yeah, it was, it was- But there was this, there was this, uh, bead failure that... And these were- Oh... proto- they were prototype tires. Right. And- Right...
• 39:44
they're back on the drawing board with that pro-level tire. The, the, uh, wire- I'm sure that they'll-... the wire-bead sports are actually out in the market.
• 39:56
Uh, you can buy them in a store now, and we did not test those. Right. They only sent us the pro-level really light ones. Right.
• 40:04
I mean, a- and understand that, that this thing was at 250 grams or better lighter than what any other tire was at the time, and that's a huge amount on a tire- Right...
• 40:14
the size of a, you know, a four-inch fat bike tire. There's not many places you can save weight, and I, I just, I, I- Yeah...
• 40:21
I really applaud 'em for kinda pushing the envelope, but I think now we're gonna gain, you know, 50 grams on the way back to durability or something.
• 40:28
Last time that I talked to them, they said that the, the, their next attempt was going to be about 825 grams, which is still 175 grams lighter than any tire than we've ever measured at, at, at our facility.
• 40:45
And, you know, to be fair, the guy that, the guy that failed the four-inch tire is one of the fastest guys in the Midwest and is very powerful. Still- Yeah... you know, I mean, he did push them to failure.
• 40:56
So here's a, here's a great product testing thing, and, uh, you know, it's great that Kenda's not afraid to try something that's not, you know, standard. Right. They really did. Right.
• 41:06
And it, it's not just the sidewalls where it was lighter. It, that tire was very, very thin on the actual tread. Uh, so- Yeah, that's kind of what I was wondering.
• 41:17
When I looked at them, that's where I thought, "Oh, man, this tire's gonna be more prone to flats," and everything else looked- Right... really well put together. But they ended up actually separating at the bead.
• 41:30
Mm-hmm. Uh, that's where the tires failed. And they will come back, but it's just been a while. Mm-hmm.
• 41:36
And, you know, this happened when this whole thing of, uh, the people at the docks, you know, that whole backup, this, the- Maritime... it happened during that time. So I, I haven't talked to them for a while.
• 41:50
They w- they were at Sea Otter. Sven beat me in the, uh- Sven... in the, uh- The Gold Sprints on the fat bikes... Gold Sprints on fat bikes. So- Cool.
• 41:58
They're, they're, they're all about fat biking and, and putting out tires. Right. But, uh, it's just not happening fast enough for, for a lot of consumers, that's for sure.
• 42:08
Well, and here's something to kinda take into consideration. Yeah. The second lightest fat bike tire out there right now, uh, is a, is a Surly Black Floyd, which is, like, 890 grams or something.
• 42:18
And, you know, yeah- Right... that thing's a l- got no tread on it, and it's, uh, it is a- Yeah, right... it's a little more flat prone than your average fat bike tire, but- Mm-hmm...
• 42:26
we did 320 miles on it in a 24-hour period, and, uh, when, when the Team A River West 24 fat bike team won that-
• 42:36
That was a- [laughs] There was only one flat and it took like, I don't know, 38 seconds to fix if, if you're kinda quick at it, so. Right, right, right.
• 42:43
Uh, but it, just- I- It's interesting that this thing was even lighter than a tire with no tread on it. [laughs] Lighter than most- Yeah... 29 plus tires that we- I figured it had to be pretty thin.
• 42:53
It, it absolutely was. I just have a, uh, I have one of those, uh, ONOne fat bikes. Mm-hmm.
• 42:59
And, uh, I have their floater tires on it, so they're kind of, uh, a little, little on the heavy side, so I figured, you know, maybe pick something up for summer riding, you know, that wasn't as aggressive.
• 43:12
Are you, are you riding trails mostly, beach, road? What, what kinda conditions are you riding in? Just trail. I would look at the Panaracer Fat B Nimble right now. It, it, it actually, it's a really...
• 43:25
It's a little bit smaller than, like, a four-inch fat bike tire, but the thing's got really good trail grip. It's light, it accelerates good, it has good rolling resistance. It's something- Yeah...
• 43:36
it, it's what's on our prototype bike we're testing right now that I... It, it's my favorite trail tire. Hey, number- Oh, oh... one tire I think right, right now is, for me, is the Dillinger.
• 43:48
Right behind that is the previous number one tire was the Hoosker Dew for trail riding. Both great ones, but- Right... Fat B Nimble's really pretty good. Yeah. And Fat B Nimble- And, and I came off riding-...
• 43:59
is an economical tire... yeah, and I came off riding- Right... Hoosker Dew as my favorite trail tire by far.
• 44:03
Had 'em set up tubeless on 50 millimeter rims, and they were my, for two years, that was my, my trail tire until the Fat B Nimble came out and I was forced, I was forced [laughs] to test them. Mm-hmm.
• 44:15
[laughs] And I actually think they're a pretty decent tire. And Hoosker's- So I have- Hoosker's run pretty light. True that, yeah. Yeah. Hoosker's are 1,200-ish. They're just, they're just so, so pricey.
• 44:27
Kind of, uh- True that... like more than my car tire. [laughs] Well, you know- Yeah... uh, here's the thing that y- [laughs]...
• 44:33
here's the thing you'll learn about, about fat bikes and tires is that, you know, saving that, that 30 or 40 bucks, the tire makes the bike. It's the whole thing about this size tire- Right...
• 44:44
is that the tire has to be the thing that works really well. You look at the geometry of the frame, not that much different than a mountain bike. You look at the components on it, all reliable stuff.
• 44:53
So what really makes 'em different is the, all the air volume and all that stuff has to work well together. So getting the best tire- Yeah... you can on even a shitty fat bike actually makes it ride pretty well.
• 45:03
Get a Wallgoose and put good tires on it or, you know- You can go up the hill at least. Yeah, and you will, you will find that the tire is m- 70% of, of the ride. So I would go ahead and, you know- Yeah...
• 45:17
find, get, get lightweight, uh, foldable, Kevlar beaded tires. It doesn't really matter what they are, a, an Ard or a f- a 45North tire. I might stay away... Well, they changed it.
• 45:30
So the Dillinger's the new version of the Escalator. That was a really thin wall. Um- Mm-hmm... but they don't make it anymore anyway, so basically the Dillinger is now the same tread pattern with a more durable carcass.
• 45:43
Um- Right... if you want something that you can go all season with, you could, you could get a, a, a studdable tire and run it non-studded in the summer and studded in the winter, and you know. Yeah.
• 45:54
Those ONOne tires, I don't know if you guys have ridden those, but they actually ride pretty nice. Uh- Yeah, we...
• 46:03
Because that's more of a, a, a British or European brand, I, I don't have any personal experience with them. Yeah, I'd love to get people's opinion on 'em, especially people that have ridden other tires. Uh- Right.
• 46:16
Yeah, these are the only tires that I've ridden, but I do have a friend of mine who's ridden three or four different tires, and he really liked the ONOne- Right on... floaters.
• 46:27
Um, but, uh, he sliced a sidewall and went to the middle on one, but we have a lot of, a lot of rocks here. Yeah, well, here's something- So I wanted to ask you guys, uh... Yeah, yeah, go ahead.
• 46:36
Well, I was just gonna say, you know, uh, slashing the sidewall on a fat bike tire is not that uncommon because there's so much surface area there. Right. And what we do- Yeah...
• 46:45
um, even on the tubeless tires we're running, is go to, I don't know what auto parts chain you have where you are, but we got O'Reilly's and AutoZone and- Yeah... there's Pep Boys out West.
• 46:55
You get like a car tire repair, um- Right... vulcanizing kit. Yeah. And that, that thing does a really good job of re... I've repaired slits in my tire that are, like, two and a half inches long with one of those things.
• 47:10
Right, yeah. And it's, and it, you know, it saves you $150 tire. You know, if it fails again- Yeah... maybe bad on me, but I've got a lot of miles on one now that had a really big hole in it.
• 47:20
So [laughs] you can, um, you can kind of... It goes on the inside of the tire. It vulcanizes- Yeah, yeah... right to the rubber. Yeah, right. So, you know, it's not just like putting a- Right...
• 47:29
a folded $100 bill in there when you get a flat on your mountain bike. It, and then you got the whole- Right, yeah. That's exactly what I'm talking about...
• 47:35
and then you got the wh- Oh, Gomez is back after the rattling of the- Yeah, and then-... the cans.
• 47:39
[laughs] And then you got the, y- you got that whole live long and prosper thing going when you got the vulcanizing on your tire. [laughs] Sorry, I had to come back and just make stupid joke.
• 47:52
What, what other question do you have? Oh, I was just gonna ask you what your guys' opinion was, um, what you guys are liking between the 27.5 plus and the 29 plus. I'm in, kind of in the market for a new trail bike. 28.
• 48:06
Yeah. [laughs] Plus. [laughs] I'm all for the 28 plus. Yeah. Well, I can, I can really only comment about 29 plus, uh, because that's- Yeah...
• 48:18
that's what we've primarily ridden in the plus bike, uh, genre right now. A lot of these bikes are just not even stateside yet. We're waiting to get- Right. Yeah...
• 48:31
test bikes that we can get real meaningful miles and side-by-side comparisons. I think that, that- There will be-- 29 plus is not gonna go away. No. A person who is six foot one- No...
• 48:45
or six foot two, uh, I think that that is tailor-made- Mm... for the taller American body. And I love 29 plus for urban assault, just- Yeah... stuff around town where you're- Brr...
• 48:59
y- y- you don't know what's gonna happen. Uh, you may hit some trails, you may hit some stairs, you may run over a bum or two or a, a, a- [laughs]... dilapidated bike. Yeah, right. I don't know.
• 49:10
They roll over stuff really well. But, uh- Okay... o- on a trail- And they're slightly forgiving for- Yeah... if- Just because you're drunk sleeping on the sidewalk doesn't make you a bum.
• 49:20
[laughs] No, but it makes- Just-... that I have to ride over you... for the record. Well, this is, this is interesting- It's like-... 'cause Mike, you're-- how tall are you, like six three? I'm five sixteen.
• 49:30
[laughs] Five sixteen. Five sixteen. So a tall guy like you- Fucking ass... a 29 plus, I mean, that y- you're a, y- you can really, you know, it just seems like it's kinda tailor-made for a guy your size.
• 49:42
Oh yeah, I love the Krampus. It's, it doesn't feel like it's, like, a big tire on me. It's, it's-- I'm seriously considering, like, possibly an ACR in the future as my touring bike, and then the Krampus- Mm-hmm...
• 49:54
is more my trail bike. Mm-hmm. I know the one thing I've heard from some guys that are really loving the idea of the 27 five plus is the, the one frame, multiple wheel sets. Right.
• 50:04
'Cause then you're talking same but higher height. Well, here, here's- 427 five plus...
• 50:08
yeah, but here's the thing about that, and I think this is where it gets really interesting, is the, the 27 plus, or.5 if you wanna put it in there, and a four-inch fat bike tire, these are very similar size, but the 29 plus- Mm-hmm...
• 50:21
and a five-inch fat bike tire are very similar size. So there are- No way, man. My 29 plus tire is way taller than my 100 mill or milli-- 100 millimeter by five fat tire. 100 millimeters. Millimeter. Millimeter.
• 50:37
Yeah, but, but you're- Millimeter... yeah, you're kinda spreading it out, right? You're doing the 100 millimeter thing. Right. That's kinda spreading it out and shrinking it down.
• 50:43
On a narrower rim, that tire kinda goes whoop. Yeah, but it's- It's like you ever see a drag racer take off from the starting line? Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah, I have.
• 50:50
That's kinda what happens to it when you narrow the tire down on a- Yeah... five-inch bike. Yeah. So. But I think that most people that run five-inch tires are on a 190 bike and they're running 100s. Yep. You know?
• 51:02
That, that, uh- Right... but maybe that's my paradigm. But you go to a, you go to a four-inch tire or a 27 plus tire, you're gonna drop the thing down like, uh, SA with the, with the hydraulics, man.
• 51:12
Just gonna go down to the ground. [laughs] But to get back to Andrew's question- [laughs]... about- Did, did Andrew, did Andrew actually have a question? [laughs]... what- We're just listening.
• 51:21
What we, what we thought about B plus is it shows promise. And here's-- I'm, I may be from Missouri and I say, "Show me," or, "I have to, like, I have to measure it myself." True that. I have, I have- Right.
• 51:34
[laughs] 'Cause neither of these guys are gonna measure it for me. [laughs] Oh, hell no. Fucking, Jesus. So, uh, I, I wanna see- No, and we all been asked...
• 51:45
uh, I wanna see if a B plus circumference is really two millimeters different than a 26 by four circumference. [laughs] Jake is timing over here. Everything you say sounds dirty, dude.
• 51:58
[laughs] If, if that's true, then we could have a fat bike that could be a four-season bike with two different sets of wheels, which would be like- Crap... I think that would be true.
• 52:12
Well, that would, th- the- Yes, I would be-... that would be a good thing for cyclists. [laughs] I feel kinda spoiled because I have at least four fat bikes available to me right now.
• 52:19
I know, it's just not everybody- I feel, yeah, I'm, uh- Not everybody is blessed like you... I'm living in unicorn land. I know. It, and I'm lucky because I have one fat bike and one plus bike, so you know.
• 52:30
I love unicorns. Not everybody has that. Yeah. But no, I was looking, I'm thinking about having a, uh, a frame built up by Burnsie. Mm-hmm. And, um, so I'm trying to...
• 52:44
I, I haven't ridden the 29 plus yet, but, um- You're a tall drink of water... I'm six, I'm six... Yeah, I'm six two, so I'm right there and kind of where it would be okay.
• 52:55
But I was thinking about doing a, like a 27.5 with, like, 140 mil fork on it, like a big fork- Mm-hmm... you know, which would bring the, bring the handlebars up. Yep, yep.
• 53:04
And, uh- That's, that's definitely a consideration because, uh, you know, on a 29 plus you really, that really raises the front end if you want that much travel. Right. A lot of the, uh- Right...
• 53:14
forks that are coming out for the, for the 29 plus are a little bit shorter travel- Yeah... than the, uh- Half an inch... yeah, right. Exactly. So that thing's not all up in your grill. Right.
• 53:27
You know, and I'm trying to get, I'm trying to get as, as enduro as possible, so, you know. Well, you know Burnsie, I think he, he, he, he listens to what you wanna do, and he's all about trying stuff- Right...
• 53:37
that is new and interesting. Yeah.
• 53:39
And I've ridden a couple of his bikes just briefly around the shop out there in Fort Collins, but he's got a good idea about how to make it feel playful and fun, and, and he's a single speed guy- Yeah...
• 53:51
so you know, you're gonna, you're gonna be able to, uh, get some power down to the rear end and make it work. Yep. I always like getting power to the rear end.
• 53:59
[laughs] So, uh, what my suggestion would be, just wait until mid-July and we- Yeah... start to get some of these bikes between some of our testers' legs, and that is when- Testers' legs. [laughs] And that is when
• 54:19
we will, uh, we'll, you know, have- You'll know... actual, factual, quantifiable data- All right. Well, that sounds-... that we can then tell you lies about. [laughs] All right, Andy. Good, good.
• 54:31
Well, you know, call in, call in anytime you want. Uh, we may know more than we know now in, uh, in, in, in a couple of weeks, but, uh, everything's kind of on its way in. Yeah, I've been in contact- All right...
• 54:42
with every, every B+ bike maker, so, you know, we may be sending you one down just to test for us for a day. Yeah. S- since one of those, uh, RFDs coming out with one that looks pretty interesting. Oh, the Sergeant.
• 54:55
Yeah, we're getting, we're definitely getting one of those to test. Oh, r- right now they're, uh- Yeah... they're, they're giving people an excellent deal on a really good fat bike. We've had- Oh, man. Yeah...
• 55:04
uh, our, our guy, our shop guy, Jim, the best wheel builder that I know, uh, rides an RSD Mayor as, as almost his daily bike. Every once in a while he throws a 29-plus in there. Yeah, I've seen them...
• 55:14
but, uh, they're really doing a great deal to, you know, I think, just move stuff through and- 1,399, man... 1,399 for a, for a Mayor fat bike. Uh, great price. Yeah, pretty ridiculous. You bet.
• 55:26
All right, Andy, thanks for calling in. All right, guys. Well, good talking to you. Yep. Okay. Talk to you soon. Bye. We're gonna,
• 55:33
we're gonna just, uh, check in with Mike real quick here and, uh- Mike, sorry we, we kind of like- Hola... split your, split your interview in two. Hi, Mike It was real muddy at that ride- Hi... wasn't it?
• 55:44
Yeah, there was, there was definitely, like I said, there was a couple long sections where I just got off and go through the slop.
• 55:49
But other than that, the current, like, all the little short sections, Cramped, Sandburg, Great, all the little flooded out roads, I just rode through them. There was
• 55:58
a couple people hiking through when I rode through, weren't too happy with me, but I had fun. It was, uh... [laughs] So- Aren't you happy with me? [laughs] So what's, what's next on your agenda?
• 56:10
Do you have another event coming up that you're, uh, you're kind of shooting for, or what do you got going on? There's a little gravel ride out in the middle of Nebraska that I'm gonna go do, and then there's, uh,
• 56:23
the only other thing I'm officially signed up for is Dakota 5-0. Oh, very good. Is that, is that that Mondragé deal? No, it's, it's on, uh, it's, it's in the Black Hills. So- Oh, right on. When is that?...
• 56:34
lots of elevation. Yeah. Yeah. Labor Day weekend. Ooh, Labor Day. Oh, I'm gonna be out there in a couple weeks. I'm gonna do some riding out there with my daughter. But, uh- Spearfish Canyon. Yeah...
• 56:44
is a really nice ride. She's- In the Black Hills... uh- Yeah, so it's gorgeous country up there. Uh, that's one been on my list forever. Took me 45 minutes to register. It's had some computer issues. [laughs] But, uh,
• 56:59
I was like, I'm like, "Crap, crap. Quick, refresh. Quick, refresh." And this is, so this is at the Dakota 5-0? Yeah. Very cool. Yeah, I heard Hugh Trace, who is recovering nicely.
• 57:12
We're hearing he had a pretty epic crash, broken hip. Oof. But yeah, really looking forward to that. There's this little thing called Gnome Fest in August. I don't know if you guys have heard of it. Yeah, yeah.
• 57:25
It's a- Saw it on Facebook... it's a big swinger thing, right? Yeah. Big old wife swap. [laughs] All... No, no, yeah, Gnome Fest. Wait, wait, we were supposed to swap?
• 57:40
[laughs] No, it was donation style. [laughs] You just took mine. [laughs] Well, yeah. I have nothing to say. All right, Mike, you got any closing comments?
• 57:57
We gotta finish this travesty out here somehow. [laughs] Bloody. [laughs] Uh, I'm good. You guys have a great night. Everybody stay fat. Right on, dude. Good luck at the Dakota 5-0, and, uh- Thank you...
• 58:11
you know, we'll, we'll keep on sending you some tests here, and you, uh, keep on rocking the free world. Right on, man. Thanks for all your help. All right. Bye. Thanks, guys. Bye.
• 58:21
We'll take a quick break, and we'll be right back. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Will Ross? Will Ross listens to Fat Bike Radio. Here's Sven and Gomez with your weekly dose of fat.
• 58:35
Hey, welcome back to the radio program. Here's Sven with a story about a fat bike unicorn.
• 58:41
The JK and I, along with a couple of other, uh, uh, Milwaukee locals did a pre-ride for the Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee that's coming up on the 13th of June.
• 58:51
Celebrating the underbelly, riding through the underbelly of Milwaukee. Yeah, it's kind of a slither. That's how it was proposed many times. Yeah.
• 59:01
It's- And, you know, this thing started o- this is the 31st year, so it's been going on a long time. And, um, the guy that originally did it is, uh, no longer really capable, 'cause he did it for 30 freaking years.
• 59:14
Right. So we gotta- He, he had some health, health issues. Yeah, for sure. And, uh, our buddy Jason from Trail Genius, um, kind of started filling in a couple years ago.
• 59:23
He was helping fill out, doing kind of pre this and pre that and, and, and the pre-ride, which is what we did on, um, uh, Sunday, is just check the route out, make sure there's not a bunch of, uh, obstructions, this and that, go to bars.
• 59:38
Alerting- Construction... alerting the places that like- Construction... "Hey, these amount of people are going to be coming here." Right. Exactly. So be prepared. And this'll be- You should know already, but...
• 59:48
It'll be like- This is one of those-... 400 people. Yeah. This is one of those magic events, though- True... that make, makes being a cyclist in Milwaukee- Just a hell of a lot of fun...
• 59:57
it just, it, uh, it, it's really the best thing ever. Yeah. And then we, we ride fat bikes, and I think that we were some of the first people that rode fat bikes.
• 1:00:04
I, I met you, at least I first noticed you, with a fat bike that you had from your 50th birthday- Yeah, there you go... I believe, the, the red Pugsley. There you are. 25 years ago. Oh, wait, I'm sorry.
• 1:00:16
[laughs] You're, you're... Yeah, right? You're... No, wait, your 21st birthday. [laughs] My 21st birthday.
• 1:00:23
Well- Yeah, so, you know, it's just one of those things that is rare and beautiful in cycling, people of all ages getting together, hanging out, riding their bikes.
• 1:00:34
Nobody cares jack shit about what brand bike you're riding or what kind of, what kind of chamois you got. It's all fun- They-... and good... they're intrigued, but not, not- Right... no judgmental.
• 1:00:48
"Oh, hey, and hey, and huh, uh-huh." Well, yeah. Right on. I like, oh man, I can't believe you warrior, whatever- They always have a movie theme- Right... and it's Animal House, so there's gonna be a lot of toga's.
• 1:01:02
House. House. House. Down by the hole. Yeah, I was looking at some of those. I don't know where you can get a college- College kid... sweatshirt. Oh, yeah. You know, they, they do sell that.
• 1:01:11
So one of the things about, uh, what [eagle screeches] Jason taking over is this thing started out as just eight guys, I think, or f- six guys in the first one, riding around Milwaukee, going to some dive bars. Okay?
• 1:01:23
We, we kept that going for 30 years. Jason's bringing back a couple of alt routes, although we're sworn to secrecy. Mm-hmm.
• 1:01:29
These are some routes where you may not wanna take your road bike on them, 'cause it is a fat tire tour, and not a fat bike tour, but there's been a proliferation of fat bikes in this, and the routes that we have planned are very fat bike friendly for the alt routes.
• 1:01:47
Very cool. So- Thank you very much... yeah, we'll check that out. And, and 29 and plus. Plus. Yeah, plus bikes too. And plus, and plus. Or even a mountain bike. I mean, really. Yeah, a mountain bike- Still...
• 1:01:57
I mean, I saw a road bike try. Or a BMX bike. Try, yeah. Just not a 20 centimeter, millimeter road bike. Fat unicycle might make a good choice. I'm not, I'm not gonna bring my, I'm not gonna bring the paddy wagon out.
• 1:02:08
I won't. You can't ride tri- [laughs] You can't ride tri-bars through any of this, unless you're on a fat bike.
• 1:02:13
But so one of the cooler things about the actual group of people that went out to do the, kind of the pre-route planning was everyone was on a fat bike or a plus bike. Yeah. The really cool thing was that I wasn't there.
• 1:02:25
[laughs] Yeah, that was, that was actually my first thing I was gonna say. [laughs] No, 'cause I was, uh... The ding, ding, ding, I'm coming through with my tricycle.
• 1:02:35
Well- Are we ready for the good, good, good, good ride? The good ride. So you know how somebody could become really cool?
• 1:02:41
They could win a fricking framed Alaskan carbon frame and fork just for [laughs] basically leaving us a phone message.
• 1:02:50
You, you, you think we're taking a fork out of our pocket and stabbing it in people's eyes and saying, "You gotta do this." No, y- all you have to do is- Our next contest- Just do, do, do it. Do it.
• 1:02:59
[laughs] Our next contest- Do it... will be easier So all you have to do- Just sneeze and then-... is call in to win. Yeah. [laughs] That's it.
• 1:03:06
We collect your phone number, so you don't have to leave your phone number like we said before. All you gotta do is tell us your name and be like, "Hey, uh-" Don Kosherek.
• 1:03:16
[laughs] This is Don Kosherek, and- I, I listen to those jerks Sven and Gomez at Fat Bike Radio. Right. That's all you gotta say. Or I love them so much- Or maybe just tell them how hard you're gonna ride us...
• 1:03:24
I wanna... Whatever, you know. So that's what you gotta do through the end of June. Yeah, June 30th we pick the- I expect-... we pick a winner... that the one guy that's sent it in so far- Yeah, we have one-...
• 1:03:37
may get some confrontation... we have one entry... cons- he's gonna get some confrontization. [laughs] No, he's gonna get some competition. I know. Exactly.
• 1:03:45
So those three syl- And Da- and by the way- Those three syllable words like don't- Dave Lunz, yours doesn't count 'cause it was incomplete, so. Yeah. Yeah, it's not a real one. No, it just has to finish it.
• 1:03:55
You can't laugh at the end and hang up. It just doesn't work. [laughs] All right. Well, we already had Michael. Now you know what we're into? Links. We're in Lancelot Links. Links. Links. Links. Links. Links.
• 1:04:07
It's that time of year when things are kinda changing out there. The times, they are a-changing. They are a-changing. Uh, we had, uh- But Ghost Kid and Bruce here are just always- Our stalwart ever, ever productive.
• 1:04:21
And then Poison Spider Bikes, man. Well, you've been out there. Yeah, I've been out there, for sure. I haven't been out there for 20 years, but if you want a fat bike now, they rent them. Oh, wow. That's pretty cool.
• 1:04:34
You know, we have a, a new member of the Bike Bike Ribbon test pilot program, David J. Glover. He's, uh, he works at a bike shop out there in Moab, Utah. Moab.
• 1:04:48
You might have seen David airborne on a, uh, ice cream truck on our site. And then apparently fat bikes are cacking, checking, catching on in the drive-by shooting capital of America, Albuquerque.
• 1:05:03
So- So we got this new thing called plusbikes.com. It's really the same old thing... I heard some, I heard some jerk started those, [laughs] that, that site up. [laughs] Oh.
• 1:05:10
D- have we talked about the guy that, like, left the comment, this douchebag guy? He actually- D-bag... left a com- D-bag, sorry. Does this stand for Doug? [laughs] Sorry, I jumped to conclusions. He's trash.
• 1:05:24
He claimed that we got- He's trash... too drunk and disrespected Katie Merchant, and, and by no means- And to be fair, his, his question was too drunk, question mark. [laughs] Question mark.
• 1:05:33
And I assure you, I have been much drunker. More drunker. More drunker before. I think. Uh- I think, I think we talked about this- I think, I think this-... at the beginning of the show. Really?
• 1:05:42
I don't know if we called out D-bag at the beginning of the show, but. So I'm s- I, I'm, I'm sorry that we offended you, sir, but, uh- I think I'm drunker this week than last week.
• 1:05:51
[laughs] Well, you haven't offended Tyler 'cause there is no offending Tyler. Indeed. Uh, we had- I like that was, we had a lot of good information. I thought that was a great interview. I thought so.
• 1:06:01
I, I thought we'd gone on- Yeah, maybe a-... fine, but, you know- Yeah, different interview... I'm sorry that we hurt your feelings, sir.
• 1:06:07
So yeah, those Plus Bike guys have some new stuff about the Fat Be Nimble 29 plus tire, the Surly Ring, S- Surly Ringley, Sun Ringlé. Mulefoot 50 SL- Mulefoot... 27 plus rims. Yeah, we got some rims.
• 1:06:21
Those are gonna be built up into a 27 plus wheel set, oddly enough. Yeah. And I know we're gonna use CX rays on it. I think we're gonna use I9 hubs, and they're going on a prototype, uh, Schlick- Schlick apron... bike.
• 1:06:36
Yeah, that's kind of a prototype of something. We have a, we just have a litany of 29 and 27 plus bikes coming in- Litany... coming into the test kitchen.
• 1:06:46
They just have to get on shore, and we need to get them to our test people, and then we're gonna have some data for you people. Data Mm-hmm So, you know, uh- That's hot...
• 1:06:56
I, I put, this is one of, I think, the first links I've put in that is not actually fat bike oriented. Although the bike that's in the video is fat tire sized for its kinda bike.
• 1:07:05
But Paul Price did a thing, I just thought it was great. You know, Paul from Paul Components. Paul's the best. Been around a long time.
• 1:07:11
It was just, I was thinking about going out and riding the Lost Coast of California with him, and I go, "Oh, I wonder what he's got up there." And I saw this, this video. I'm like, "You gotta check this out."
• 1:07:21
Didn't check it out. And so check it out. So, and, uh, we, our friend, uh, Olaf here has a link. He's got a, uh, Instigator, a 26-plus bike- Right, right... that he's gonna be, uh, riding around.
• 1:07:35
And, uh, did you know that our precious cherub, Olaf, is getting married? To the Instigator? Um- Or, uh- I think probably in Sweden they let you marry a bike.
• 1:07:47
[laughs] But, 'cause there's just open-minded people that basically be like, "Mind your own damn business. I'm gonna, I'm, I'm, I'm gonna marry this bike." My bike. But, uh,
• 1:07:59
there's an old saying, uh, about marriage in Swedish, and JK's [laughs] gonna share it with us.
• 1:08:07
[sings] De in ti hur fur ala shom bark arthon dir fur dur dee inda fling dar on da bone da boom doom doom doo ef ra ga hon. [laughs] Now it's- Hoo, hoo... now he's just singing. [laughs] You know-
• 1:08:26
That's supposed to mean, "All are not virgins that carry wreaths," i.e., bridal wreaths. Yeah. I said that part. There was a, there was a whole list of crazy Swedish sayings, so.
• 1:08:40
I said that part and then I went into the Muppet Show. Congratulations, Olaf. Congrats, man. [laughs] Sorry. Congrats. Naughty Dread, it has come to the time when we think surly, but these radio vibes
• 1:08:57
dank you. Aye-ra-ra. [laughs] That's- Good night, everyone. Yeah. And sweet dreams. Pleasant tomorrows. Yes. I'll be right here. You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's Weekly Dose of Fat.
• 1:09:12
Find us on the web at fat-bike.com/radio. We'll see you next time.
