- 0:00Yeah, I cried a lot this episode. And I think
- 0:02I know what part you cried at. I mean, it was
- 0:04multiple, but yeah, it was... There was one part
- 0:07that always makes me tear up. I was... Which
- 0:09we'll get to. Like, if someone's crying on screen,
- 0:11I'm gonna cry. No, I'm not like that. And also,
- 0:14no one cried on this. No, that's not true. Everyone
- 0:17cries in this episode. Yeah, Bay tears up. Everyone's
- 0:20doing really good cry acting in this episode.
- 0:23They are, they are. But I totally understand.
- 0:26I used to be so uncomfortable in movie theaters
- 0:28when something sad happened and people cried.
- 0:30And my friends were still weeping next to me.
- 0:32Uncomfortable because they were crying or because
- 0:35you weren't? Well, my family's not very emotive.
- 0:38So I think I was like, I don't know what to do.
- 0:40I remember specifically, I was watching... The
- 0:43Bethany Hamilton one. What's the name of that
- 0:46movie? Soul Surfer? Thank you. Soul Surfer. And
- 0:49she's talking about faith and the trauma of having
- 0:53a shark bite your arm off. Sure. And my friend next
- 0:56to me starts crying. And I was like, oh, I don't
- 1:01know what to do with that. It's okay that you
- 1:03didn't cry then because she's a TERF now. Yeah,
- 1:05she is a TERF now, so whatever. But I do just
- 1:08if someone's crying. I start crying. I guess
- 1:11I'm an empath. I don't know. Shut up. Did you
- 1:14cry when you found your implant? Oh my god. Monday,
- 1:17I'm home. I'm working all day. I'm doing errands.
- 1:20I'm folding laundry. And then I'm about to go
- 1:23to the gym and I'm like, wait, where the hell
- 1:25is my left processor? I don't know where it is.
- 1:29Which is strange because I've been doing this
- 1:31for 25 plus years. I understand how to handle
- 1:34implants and I know where I put them. But I cannot
- 1:37for the life of me find it anywhere. But I'm
- 1:39like, you know what? It's definitely in the apartment.
- 1:41Because the last time I used it was three hours
- 1:43ago. I'm going to go to the gym. Whatever. I
- 1:45come back. A and I do a deep search. We're flipping
- 1:50things over. We're flipping the mattress over.
- 1:52We're crawling on all fours. We're under the
- 1:55couch. And I'm getting desperate. I'm getting
- 1:58upset. If you'll remember from the first episode,
- 2:01a surgery, a cochlear implant surgery is
- 2:03$100,000. Not including speech therapy and follow
- 2:05-up. I think $11,000. is the actual implant,
- 2:10the external processor itself. And that's per
- 2:12ear. Jesus Christ. So clearly I was panicking.
- 2:16And Cochlear does have a once -in -a -lifetime
- 2:18warranty. But, like, again, it's once -in -a
- 2:21-lifetime. And I didn't want to use that once
- 2:23-in -a -lifetime warranty. Because I was like,
- 2:25it's in the apartment. Yeah. And it was. Did
- 2:28not find it all day on Tuesday I even asked
- 2:31you to come over because I was so desperate and
- 2:34I need another pair of eyes. And I was so cocky
- 2:36I was like I’m gonna find it. We're definitely
- 2:39gonna find it. And at the end you're like I’m
- 2:41so mad. I was so — it was really upsetting, learned
- 2:45that so many things in your apartment are made
- 2:47of metal. Yeah. Implant could stick to anything.
- 2:50Yeah you were like well it's magnetic so it could
- 2:52stick to whatever. There were so many options.
- 2:54I do feel we checked all the options. We did.
- 2:57We were blaming Piper. I know. I now feel so
- 3:00bad because Piper did nothing wrong. So yeah,
- 3:02the conclusion was it was on my desk the entire
- 3:05time and the same office desk in my home that
- 3:08I've been working on for the past three days.
- 3:10I'm working and it's... When did I text you? In
- 3:14the afternoon? Like 1 P.M. I've been at this
- 3:16desk for six hours. I think you have a ghost.
- 3:20And lo and behold, the implant is under this
- 3:22very flimsy piece of paper. Which we definitely
- 3:25moved. We moved stuff around on your desk. Anyways,
- 3:29yeah, I felt absolutely insane. I got no sleep
- 3:32the night before. What I really want to know,
- 3:34and I'm so sorry for that. I mean, I was stressed
- 3:37for you as well. I know you had a pit in your
- 3:38stomach. I'm on top of the world now. Everything's fine.
- 3:41Do we think if you somehow hadn't found it today,
- 3:44and we'll never know this, because Paolo was
- 3:46fully going to go over to your place tonight
- 3:47to look. I was going to have him come. Yeah.
- 3:49Do we think he would have walked into the apartment
- 3:51and been like, there it is on your fucking desk?
- 3:53I was thinking about that. I'm so glad you found
- 3:56it. Because to have a man come in and be like,
- 3:59that's my worst nightmare. And been like, it's
- 4:01been under this one piece of paper the entire
- 4:03time for the past two days. It is kind of the
- 4:06color of your desk. That's true. It's tan and
- 4:08my desk is like a light wood. Yeah. We flipped
- 4:11the mattress again. We flipped the mattress.
- 4:14We flipped the couch cushions. We were on all
- 4:17fours. I felt like performing telekinesis on
- 4:20Piper, my cat. I almost pitched, let's hire an
- 4:23animal communicator, like a psychic. One of the
- 4:26things I wanted to do was like, I think I'm going
- 4:28to hire like professional cleaners to come to
- 4:30the house and they'll do a deep clean and maybe
- 4:32they'll find it. At least we don't need to order
- 4:35a metal detector now. I know. Well, I do have
- 4:38the backup charger still coming. That's still
- 4:40good, I think. It's still good to have for emergencies.
- 4:43I need a backup charger for an old implant and...
- 4:47I stupidly was like, there's nothing I can do.
- 4:49And Dani was like, what about eBay? And it's
- 4:51true. It was on eBay for $50. Everything you
- 4:55could ever need. Becky from Oklahoma. She sent
- 4:58it my way. Thank you, Becky from Oklahoma. Remember
- 5:00when it was your birthday and I was like, you
- 5:03sent me like an American Girl doll birthday kit?
- 5:05Coconut. Yeah, the Coconut kit. It was just a
- 5:09photo. And I found it on eBay. Oh, I think I
- 5:13told you. Oh, but it wouldn't have arrived on
- 5:14time. It wouldn't have arrived on time. And I
- 5:15was like, I know Kara only cares about this for
- 5:18this one day. And if I give it to her after,
- 5:19you're going to be like, what even? But they
- 5:21had it. They had it. I was like, that's this
- 5:23is eBay is such a good resource. You guys, it
- 5:25hasn't been taken over by resellers the way
- 5:28Depop has. I bought my first American Girl doll
- 5:30On eBay. Did you not have American Girl as a
- 5:32kid? Or did your parents get it from eBay?
- 5:34I really wanted one and my mom was like, that's
- 5:36great. We're not spending $120 on a doll. And
- 5:39that's really smart. It took a lot of begging
- 5:41from my parents. Yeah. I did extra chores. They
- 5:45would pay me like 50 cents to do a chore. And
- 5:48then I bought a Samantha doll. 50 cents. I was
- 5:52six. I was barely doing chores, I think. But
- 5:56yeah, in a bidding war, I bought a Samantha doll
- 5:58for like $52. That's nice. Did you just have
- 6:01the Samantha doll? I just had Samantha until
- 6:04I was eight or nine. And then I got Julie when
- 6:08Julie came out. She's the blonde one, right?
- 6:10She's the one with the deaf best friend. Yes.
- 6:13What's the deaf best friend's name? Joy. But
- 6:16Joy didn't have a doll. No. Like, none of the
- 6:18best friends. Why would they? None of the best
- 6:20friends had the dolls. They only really existed
- 6:23in the books. Well, Molly had the friend Emily,
- 6:26and Emily was a doll. I think, like, the big
- 6:29ones, like, there were, like, a core couple of
- 6:31dolls. They weren't really the ones that I cared
- 6:33about, but there were a couple of dolls that,
- 6:35like, had more stuff than the other dolls. No,
- 6:38the only dolls I had are Molly and Emily. Oh,
- 6:40you had the two of them together? I had the two
- 6:42of them. Aww. But I bought them, my parents bought
- 6:44them for me at separate times. Emily was the British
- 6:46one that comes and stays with them during the
- 6:48war. And she comes and stays with them during
- 6:49World War II. Yes. She had a doll, really?
- 6:52I'm pretty sure, unless I bought a doll that
- 6:55just looked just like her, but she had freckles
- 6:57and a bob. That's Kit. No, it was Emily. I'm
- 7:01Gonna google right now, actually. We should know this
- 7:03because I've been spending a lot of time at the
- 7:05American Girl store, so I should be more educated.
- 7:08Oh, yep. There she is. Wow. Oh, she was cute.
- 7:12Yeah. I don't know that she's still in production.
- 7:15I did not see Emily when I was there most recently.
- 7:19I think I just like them because it was kind
- 7:21of gay. Yeah, I was going to say there was definitely
- 7:24some. They show the room. Some gay subtext. And
- 7:27they were kind of frenemies. Yeah. But then they
- 7:30bond. But then they bond. Because Emily's like,
- 7:32didn't her whole family die in the war? I
- 7:34think her family were all like war refugees,
- 7:37but they got sent to different places for some
- 7:40reason. Either way, she was not with her family.
- 7:42She was all alone. Her dad was definitely fighting
- 7:44in the war. Yeah. But I remember there's this
- 7:47one part where she's crying and Molly comes into
- 7:50her bed and the two of them cuddle. And I was
- 7:52like, oh my God. And then they explored each
- 7:54other's bodies. Basically, I was like, this is
- 7:57so hot. And they said, this will be continued
- 7:58in The Care and Keeping of You. Exactly. Do you
- 8:02want to get to the show? I do want to get to
- 8:03the show. The Persistence of Memory. Switched at
- 8:20Birth. July 11th, 2011. 7 -11 -11. Wow. That's
- 8:25a lucky combo of numbers. And this is a really
- 8:27fucking good episode. This is one of my favorite
- 8:29episodes of the series. Just a lot happens. The
- 8:33girls, I think, are getting along better. Daphne
- 8:36really... I think this is the most we learn about
- 8:39Daphne's journey as a deaf person and, like,
- 8:42the struggles of being deaf. Bay’s on the journey
- 8:45to find out who her bio dad is and also she gets
- 8:47to know Emmett more and we the audience get to
- 8:50know Emmett more. Yeah we do. And we fall in love
- 8:52with him. And it rocks. I love this episode. Yeah
- 8:55it's really sweet so — It also infuriates me sometimes.
- 8:58We'll get to it. Wait why does it infuriate you?
- 9:01Tell me. The school, with the teacher. Yeah. Yeah,
- 9:04I wrote a lot of just like, fuck this person. Exactly,
- 9:07that's the infuriating part basically. Yeah we
- 9:10open with Bay playing with like, Kid Pix. Basically.
- 9:15Basically. She's messing around with that photo.
- 9:18Of pregnant Regina. Yeah. And she's messing with
- 9:20the colors and... I totally remember, like, playing
- 9:25with pictures in the exact way that she is doing
- 9:28it. Yeah. Like, I went through that big phase
- 9:30in high school. But I wasn't using Photoshop.
- 9:32I think I used some extension that was on Facebook.
- 9:36To make my pictures saturated. Totally. Oh yeah,
- 9:40they had like a photo editor. Exactly. That's
- 9:42kind of what I was using. And that's basically
- 9:44what Bay is using. Except this has a fantastic
- 9:47zoom. Yeah. Because she is able to zoom right
- 9:50onto the parking pass. Yeah, for 2011. Crazy
- 9:53technology. Yeah, it's from the future. And then
- 9:56Kathryn comes in and says, Hey girl, Daphne
- 10:02made dinner. That apparently Bay didn't go to.
- 10:05Yeah, I guess Bay was doing her homework. And
- 10:07also, again, Daphne is cooking and feeding the
- 10:10family. Is no one cooking for her? No. And then
- 10:13Bay insults vegetarians. Vegetarians catch a
- 10:15lot of strays in this episode. That food looked
- 10:18great. It looked really good. I also really like
- 10:20tofu, though. But what didn't look good is Daphne's
- 10:23crimped orange shirt that she's wearing in the
- 10:25kitchen. And again, I did not notice, but I love
- 10:28your attention to detail. It's so bright and
- 10:31it's structured in a way that is confusing to
- 10:34me. Like, it's structured in a way, the texture
- 10:36of it, I'm like, that was never actually on trend
- 10:38ever. So I don't really know why. The way she
- 10:42dresses in this episode, she dresses like a forty
- 10:44-year-old woman. I know. Especially when she
- 10:46goes to the school, that's not doing her any
- 10:48favors. No, and she's so pretty. Why are they
- 10:51doing this to her? And then Kathryn’s like,
- 10:53have you ever taken a cooking class? And Daphne
- 10:56says, Carlton only offers home ec. My school
- 10:59did not have home ec. Did your school? My middle
- 11:02school had home ec, but I never took it because
- 11:05I always had to go see my teacher of the deaf. So
- 11:08I could never take any elections in middle school.
- 11:10But I think for middle school, once per quarter,
- 11:14you had different elective. And there was woodwork,
- 11:18there was home ec, or it was like family consumer
- 11:20sciences. That's what they called it. Oh, I mean,
- 11:23to be fair, I did not go to middle school. So
- 11:25maybe I just missed that. But yeah, in high school,
- 11:28we did not have any kind of like... No, I - In
- 11:31class. The way she's like, they only offer home
- 11:34ec. I'm like, girl, that's actually not standard
- 11:36practice these days. I think my high school offered
- 11:39Cooking electives. Okay, fancy. But also, this
- 11:43is different because now this time Kathryn
- 11:46is asking Bay if she's okay with it instead of
- 11:48springing it up on her like they did the first
- 11:50episode. Yes, technically, but Bay, she asks
- 11:54Bay - While Daphne is right there. Right in front
- 11:56of Daphne. She says, would you mind? I have an
- 11:58idea. Daphne's right here. Bay, wanna come? Yeah,
- 12:01she is kind of springing it on Bay. But Bay is
- 12:05actually very okay with it. And I think she's
- 12:07shown some character growth. She's supportive.
- 12:09She's welcoming to the idea. It might just be
- 12:12that she's so preoccupied with this dad thing
- 12:14that she doesn't really care that Daphne's like
- 12:16embedded herself more in the family. But I don't
- 12:19know. The two of them are just much nicer to
- 12:21each other than they were the past two episodes.
- 12:23And I think one of the things they bond over,
- 12:25honestly, is the fact that Toby is being a nightmare.
- 12:29Yeah, I guess nothing to bond you with your new
- 12:31sister, like your shitty brother. Because Bay
- 12:34leaves the kitchen and Toby's like, give me $200.
- 12:38And he grabs her arm. He grabs her tight. Violently.
- 12:42Yeah. It's spooky. It's scary. What's he going
- 12:46to do if he doesn't give Wilke the money? Is
- 12:48Wilke going to shoot him? Is he in the mafia?
- 12:50Well, we'll get into that later because I think
- 12:52kind of maybe, like not Wilke, but I think Wilke's
- 12:55mixed up with some bad people. Okay. I was just
- 12:58like, why is Toby scared for his life? He seems
- 13:01really freaked out. He is also just like, poor
- 13:04little rich boy. This is probably the most stress
- 13:06he's ever felt. That's true. And then, yeah,
- 13:08Daphne is getting ready to go to this cooking
- 13:10class. And she's like, they're not going to have
- 13:11spoons there. She's really stressed. Yeah, she's
- 13:14got measuring cups for some reason. She does
- 13:16not understand the vibe. Regina's like, by the
- 13:19way, the interpreter will meet you there. And
- 13:21Daphne's like, no! Yeah, Daphne gets very upset
- 13:25about the concept of an interpreter. She's like,
- 13:28I don't want access. I want to hear all your
- 13:30thoughts on this. I think it's fair to be like,
- 13:33my daughter's deaf and she's going to need access
- 13:35in this hearing school. She even says the school
- 13:38had already lined one up. Yeah. The school called
- 13:41her. Right, the school has met her before. Yeah.
- 13:43And you see later, they even hire the same interpreter
- 13:46from the first episode. Right, from her tour.
- 13:49Yeah. So. They've got a guy. They've got a guy
- 13:52on hand. Also, Buckner is a very wealthy school.
- 13:56Let them pay an interpreter. Yeah. But no, Daphne's
- 13:59like, I don’t want to be the weird girl. I don’t want to stand
- 14:01out. And that day, she does go to school, and
- 14:03I guess she sends the interpreter home. We don't
- 14:07even see the interpreter. No, she doesn't have
- 14:09one for the first class. Yeah. But she does have
- 14:12Bay showing her around the campus a little bit.
- 14:14And it's sweet. It's sweet, and Bay's being really
- 14:17supportive. Daphne is wearing a miniskirt and
- 14:20wedge heels. In the kitchen? Also in a space
- 14:23where everyone else is in a uniform. Because
- 14:27this is a private school. So she's the one person
- 14:30that gets to show off a real outfit. And that's
- 14:34what she went with. And that's what you chose
- 14:35to wear? You should be wearing closed-toed
- 14:37shoes in the kitchen. Yeah, safety first. Safety
- 14:40first, Daphne. Did she wear an apron? Because everyone
- 14:42else was an apron. I did not clock her apron.
- 14:45Everyone else had their own apron and it was
- 14:48like a unique looking apron. And then Wilke
- 14:50had the stud muffin apron. Wow, I totally missed
- 14:52that. Yeah, he had a stud muffin apron. It said
- 14:55the word stud and then it had a picture of a
- 14:57muffin. Do we think he bought that for this class?
- 15:00Yes. Speaking of Wilke, Toby gives him his money.
- 15:04Some of his money. But we don't know how much
- 15:06he owes because last episode we were kind of
- 15:09just guessing. But he owes Wilke 10 grand. 10
- 15:12grand. 10,000 smackaroos. Yeah, so he gives
- 15:15Wilke four grand and Wilke's like, what the
- 15:17hell? Wilke seems stressed. He said, I bet big
- 15:20on Notre Dame and I lost. Yeah, and he's basically
- 15:22like, I don't know what these other guys that
- 15:24I lost to are going to do to me. I mean, the
- 15:27twist is that he's just as much of a gambling
- 15:29addict as Toby is. He is. So, and then John is
- 15:33at a golf course. Having, like, a showdown with
- 15:36a board member from the hospital. Dale from the
- 15:38hospital, and Dale is trying to persuade John
- 15:41to settle. Basically saying, your daughter was switched
- 15:44At birth? Get over it. Yeah, he's like, obviously
- 15:46it wasn't our fault. What changes have we made
- 15:49to make sure it never happens again? I don't
- 15:51know. Yeah. Get over it. Lay off. Otherwise,
- 15:54we're gonna close the hospital, basically. We're
- 15:57gonna close the hospital, and also, I'm gonna
- 15:59threaten you. It's gonna ruin your life and your
- 16:01family's life. Mind you, the hospital has liability
- 16:04insurance. I'm assuming this is a large conglomerate
- 16:09hospital in Kansas City. This is not a small
- 16:13independent hospital. I don't know a hospital
- 16:15conglomerate in Kansas City or that area, but
- 16:18I assume it's one of those. Yeah, probably evil
- 16:21ones. And then the cooking class is happening
- 16:23and it's going about how you would expect it
- 16:26to go. Yeah, this kitchen looks like it should
- 16:28be on the set of Top Chef. Yeah. It's crazy.
- 16:31It's stunning. The teacher's like, we're going
- 16:33to make some burgers and fries. The British teacher.
- 16:36She's British? Yeah. Okay, good catch. I couldn't
- 16:39hear the accent. Which is kind of confusing because
- 16:41they said it's going to be taught by local chefs.
- 16:44What is like a fancy British chef doing in KC?
- 16:47Kansas City has a wonderful restaurant atmosphere.
- 16:51Oh, I'm so sorry to Kansas City. I didn't mean
- 16:53to slander. Have you been? No. Okay, well. I
- 16:57think they have, like, a big food scene, though.
- 16:59Every city has, quote, a big food scene. Okay.
- 17:02But they're taking the class, and she's doing
- 17:05lots of turning as she's talking. It's stressful.
- 17:09Daphne raises her hand, and she goes, how do
- 17:12you feel about black bean veggie burgers? Because
- 17:14she's vegetarian. And the teacher, instead of
- 17:17saying, I'm sorry, sweetie, can you speak up?
- 17:19She says, flappy wedgie burgers? Girl use your
- 17:24context clues. Yeah. Why on earth would that be
- 17:27what she said. Also like you are British and if
- 17:30she had said flappy wedgie burgers that sounds
- 17:33like something your people would have created
- 17:35so maybe don't say it like that. But all the kids
- 17:38are laughing at her and the teacher does not
- 17:40do anything to stop it. Yeah. Fuck that teacher.
- 17:42Fuck that teacher. Wilke’s nice about it though.
- 17:45He's her like sous chef. Her yeah her sous chef.
- 17:48He does take the opportunity to make a sexual
- 17:52joke about the secret to a good burger. Size
- 17:55matters. Size matters. But Daphne laughs. She
- 17:58likes it. Yeah, I like it too. That was kind
- 18:01of funny. But he's being accessible and funny.
- 18:03Meanwhile, Emmett's outside. He's waiting. I
- 18:06guess he's probably picking up Daphne after the
- 18:09cooking class. And Bay sees him. She was about
- 18:12to say his name, but then she was like, oh wait,
- 18:14reminder. I have to go up in front of him and
- 18:16wave. Ally. Ally. But this, I think, is their
- 18:19first time talking. I think just the two of them.
- 18:22Yeah. It's sweet. It's sweet. Yeah. She says,
- 18:26what's up? And they look at his photos. He took
- 18:30some very interesting, heavily saturated and
- 18:35edited pictures. Whatever. It's very 2011. It's
- 18:38very 2011. And then Bay shows him her very heavily
- 18:41saturated and edited picture of pregnant Regina.
- 18:44She's got, like, purple hair. Again, this was
- 18:46hard to look at because I have edited photos
- 18:50exactly like this as a 16 -year -old girl. And
- 18:53that was in 2016. So way less cool to do it then.
- 18:58Yeah, that's fair. But Emmett's like, that's
- 19:00cool. And he asks about the parking pass in the
- 19:03picture. And Bay’s saying, oh, yeah, don't
- 19:05know what that is, but I want to because I think
- 19:07it'll help me find out who my bio dad is. And
- 19:10Emmett offers his services. Yeah, he's going
- 19:13to help. And then, are we back in the cooking
- 19:15class? We're back in the cooking class. Yeah,
- 19:18they're using timers that make a little ding
- 19:20sound. Wilke and Daphne are frying up some french
- 19:23fries and whipping up a little aioli sauce. But
- 19:26Wilke and the teacher go speak somewhere. Okay.
- 19:30Here's my thing about this. Okay. I understand
- 19:32everyone. Well, not everyone, but the people
- 19:35in the class and Daphne both blaming Daphne,
- 19:38basically. Okay. I blame the teacher who is kind
- 19:42of flirting with Wilke. Daphne sends him to
- 19:44go get an egg for the aioli. And the teacher
- 19:47sees it as an opportunity. She pulls him off
- 19:49screen and is like, do you intend to let your
- 19:52partner do all the work? And then she pulls him
- 19:54aside and keeps him over there. And then Daphne
- 19:58is over there stuck doing all the work. Even
- 20:01if she could hear the timer, she's busy because
- 20:04she's doing the work of two people. So she doesn't
- 20:07have hands free to pull the fries out. No, she
- 20:10doesn't. It’s the teacher’s fault for.. being weird
- 20:12with Wilke, but also, didn't anyone give her a
- 20:15heads up that someone in the class is hard of
- 20:17hearing? Clearly not. Well, that's the school's
- 20:20fault. The school should have done that. That's
- 20:21really confusing that the school was like, we'll
- 20:24get you an interpreter, but we're not going to
- 20:25send an email to the teacher. The teacher should
- 20:27have kept an eye out, and also maybe the other
- 20:29students should have been a little considerate
- 20:31and been like, hey hon, just want to let you
- 20:32know your fries are done. Yeah, also you see
- 20:34smoke, just pull them out. You can just go pull
- 20:37them out yourself. But it's only when the smoke
- 20:39alarm starts blaring that the teacher and Wilke
- 20:42turn around. They're like, oh dear. And then
- 20:45she's mortified. That teacher's bad and she wants
- 20:48to sleep with Wilke. She wants that high schooler.
- 20:50I'm telling you. Fire her. Then the next scene,
- 20:53they're in the principal's office, I guess. And
- 20:55he's like, since there was a fire. No, there
- 20:58wasn't. There was just smoke. It was just smoke
- 21:01and it was fine. It set off the fire alarm.
- 21:03There wasn't a fire. No. And then he's like,
- 21:06for legal reasons, you're going to have to have
- 21:08an interpreter anytime you're on campus. What?
- 21:11Sorry. That's crazy. So schools are allowed to
- 21:14do this. Really? Yeah. So if the school believes
- 21:17you can’t access the curriculum or get school communication
- 21:21effectively without an interpreter, they can
- 21:24insist on providing one. Oh, I hate that. Yeah.
- 21:28But I think they have good reason. They're like.
- 21:30You could have burned down the school and you
- 21:33weren't able to effectively communicate. Was
- 21:35our teacher shitty? That's not a problem. It
- 21:37feels like they're throwing an interpreter at
- 21:40a much bigger problem. Exactly. I think all the
- 21:43teachers need a little DEI training. And also
- 21:45sensitivity training because then the principal's
- 21:47like, I get it. My daughter has a deaf friend.
- 21:50Literally, my granddaughter has a deaf friend.
- 21:53But she has a cochlear implant. Have you heard
- 21:56that? You dumb bitch. Have you heard of that?
- 21:59You should get one. Literally. Have you thought
- 22:01about it? Mind you, he doesn't know this woman.
- 22:03He doesn't know this girl. Hasn’t met her until today.
- 22:06Just a thought. Just gonna throw it out there.
- 22:08Maybe you should get brain surgery. It reminds
- 22:11me of when people say to me or they say to A like,
- 22:15oh, my friend’s, cousin’s, ex -husband’s, partner’s,
- 22:19great aunt has a dog who's deaf. You know? Oof.
- 22:24It's the same kind of vibe, like my granddaughter's
- 22:26friend has a cochlear implant. I don't know anything
- 22:28about her. Maybe, have you tried hearing? Have you
- 22:32have you tried it? And then yeah they go, go out
- 22:34in the hall and Kathryn cannot read the room.
- 22:36Did not pick up on the fact that that was inappropriate
- 22:38and is like, have you thought about it? Have you?
- 22:41It's really fucked up. And Daphne’s like, obviously
- 22:44yes. She means well but like, it's really satisfying
- 22:48when Regina yells at her later. I know. It's
- 22:50so needed. So yeah, then Emmett shows up back
- 22:54at Butner. But, Butner. No, more like BUTTner.
- 22:58Oh. Emmett's back and he's, he's found the literal,
- 23:03the car. Like not. He said, so I just got the
- 23:06license plate number. I don't know why you never
- 23:08think to do that. I do feel that he was a real
- 23:12hero. Yeah. And so I have to send you, I have
- 23:15to send you something. Oh, God. Okay. I already
- 23:18had a crush on him, but this episode really added
- 23:20fuel to the fire of my crush for Sean Berdy.
- 23:25Do you want me to narrate what's happening? Yeah,
- 23:28please do. Okay. So I used to watch this, God,
- 23:31all the time. Okay, so what I just received is
- 23:35a link for a YouTube video titled Enrique Iglesia’s
- 23:39Hero in American Sign Language, parentheses,
- 23:42Sean Berdy. And I'm getting an ad right now.
- 23:44Oh. For Renaissance classic boots. Oh. Are they
- 23:48cute? No, they're really ugly. Oh. Oh, skip ad.
- 23:51Oh, he's in the rain. He's looking. He's holding
- 23:56a woman. He's signing the song Hero by Enrique
- 24:00Iglesias. It's very blue. Yeah. The lights are
- 24:05very blue and it's very emotive and there's a
- 24:08lot of crying. Yeah, there's a lot of crying.
- 24:10And he's like the romantic lead in this music
- 24:13video. It's cute. You're so gay. You're like,
- 24:16this doesn't move me at all. Were you like, I'm
- 24:19in love with him when you watched this? Yes.
- 24:21Because to me, I'm looking at it and I'm like,
- 24:23this is a 15 -year -old boy. I can be your hero.
- 24:25And she's, yeah, I could see why. You're like,
- 24:28I want him to show up at my door and sign. I
- 24:31can be your hero. Yeah, that was the fantasy.
- 24:33While wearing a pink cable knit sweater. That
- 24:35was the fantasy. Do you think she knows sign?
- 24:37Or is she just like, this is cool? She's not
- 24:39signing back. No, yeah. It's just, like, a random
- 24:42actress, I think. She's just staring at him.
- 24:44Yeah. If someone shows up at your door, guys,
- 24:47signing, how much they love you, and that they'll
- 24:49be your hero, you should sign back. So, I think,
- 24:52as you'll watch further, not to spoil it, but,
- 24:54like, I think the premise of this video is that
- 24:56she has cancer. Jesus. And she, like, doesn't
- 25:00want to be with him. And he's like, no, I'll
- 25:03be there for you. But the only way that that's
- 25:05conveyed is later on you're going to see her
- 25:07with a headscarf on and no hair. Oh my god. Okay,
- 25:11I'm moving forward. Oh, she's petting the cat.
- 25:13I can kiss away the pain. I like the part also
- 25:16where he's riding his bike, but then he's signing
- 25:19at the same time. Because I thought it was really
- 25:21cool that he could ride his bike without handlebars.
- 25:24Oh, her head hurts. It's not her head. I think
- 25:27it's her wig. I think he's touching her head
- 25:29and she's like, don't touch my head because she's
- 25:31wearing a wig because she's sick. I think. I
- 25:33love that he's standing in the rain. Oh, he's
- 25:36got the little radio outside like a John Hughes
- 25:38film. Yeah. It's sweet. It's just a little silly.
- 25:42It's completely silly. I'm not watching it in
- 25:45earnest now. The comments are overwhelmingly
- 25:48positive. Yeah, it's sweet. It's cute. Okay.
- 25:52Sean Berdy, you're wonderful and sweet and hot.
- 25:55Anyway, Bay asks how to sign thank you in sign
- 25:58language. And he teaches her. And he teaches
- 26:00her. And I think the two of them ditch school.
- 26:02Yeah, they just fully ditch school. Yeah, she
- 26:05hops on the motorcycle. THE motorcycle. The motorcycle.
- 26:08If Sean and Kathryn found out, they'd be beside
- 26:11themselves. They would be dead. But whatever,
- 26:13because they go to the junkyard. Yeah, they're
- 26:15going to the junkyard. Daphne's back at Buckner.
- 26:19Do we think this class is every day? It seems
- 26:21like it, but that doesn't seem realistic. Yeah,
- 26:24but anyways, Daphne's back at the cooking class
- 26:26and she has her interpreter, Sam, again. Again,
- 26:29this is the interpreter, Paul Raci, who was also
- 26:31in the first episode as an interpreter. And Wilke
- 26:34is making light of the incident, but Daphne looks
- 26:36so sad. So sad. She looks like she's been kicked,
- 26:40like she's so downtrodden. Yeah, she looks like
- 26:42a sad little puppy. And it doesn't help that
- 26:45the girls behind her are being very mean and
- 26:48snooty. To which Wilke says my favorite line
- 26:51of his in this episode. He says, get back to
- 26:53your frittata, Clover. It's a welcome change
- 26:55from Liam's behavior in episode two. No, hell
- 26:59yeah. I think that's the best part of Wilke
- 27:01is like, he is not afraid to stand up for Daphne.
- 27:04He'd be like, get back to your frittata, Clover.
- 27:06Yeah. Instead of being like, guys, stop. Or being
- 27:09like, well, I didn't know if you wanted my help
- 27:10or not. He's just like, no, I'm going to help.
- 27:13Yeah. Fuck you. So that also makes Wilke slash
- 27:16Austin Butler really hot in this episode. And
- 27:19then he does immediately make a threesome joke
- 27:21about the interpreter. But yeah, the girls are
- 27:23being mean and the teacher says, hi guys, today
- 27:26we're making gazpacho, which is a dig. Yeah.
- 27:29She goes, which requires no heating at all. Yeah.
- 27:33Girl, fuck you. I hate this teacher so much.
- 27:36And she's also talking so slow. Obviously now
- 27:39the school has sent her an email and she's misinterpreting.
- 27:42how to deal with it. So she's like, I'm going
- 27:44to talk really slow. I'm not, we're not going
- 27:47to do any actual cooking. Nope. And Daphne sees
- 27:51the girls looking at her and whispering about
- 27:53her and says to Sam, are they talking about me? And
- 27:56he's like, okay. And he says, this is what happens
- 27:59when special needs charity cases are forced on
- 28:01the rest of us. And I will be burning down the
- 28:04cooking class and everyone in it. That's what
- 28:06I would do. That feels like reasonable. Yeah.
- 28:09Thank you. Bay Emmett. They're at the junkyard.
- 28:12Yes. First Bay's like, we're never going to find
- 28:15it at this junkyard. Two seconds later, they
- 28:18find it. Emmett's literally like, come this way
- 28:20with me. They have such good chemistry in this
- 28:22part. And I think it's in part because he can't
- 28:24hear how negative she's being. I think he signed,
- 28:27we’ve come all this way. Yeah. Let's look. I think
- 28:30that's what he signs. Yeah. And I'm glad that
- 28:34he pushes them to look because, yeah, they find
- 28:37the car right away. Yeah. And Bay goes in there,
- 28:40and it is pretty empty. Like, there's just, like,
- 28:43random stuff in there, but, like, she's looking
- 28:45for, like, something. Yeah, and she's frustrated.
- 28:47She's not really finding anything. She's upset
- 28:50because the empty car is a symbol for the empty
- 28:54parental relationships that she's currently having.
- 28:57Whoa. And the fact that she doesn't feel like
- 28:59either of her, either her real parents or her
- 29:02real parents, her parents or her bio parent.
- 29:06Singular. Is really showing up for her and supporting
- 29:08her. So she's looking for her father. And this
- 29:10tracks because she says to Emmett, like, it's funny
- 29:14because you are the best listener I know. Yeah.
- 29:17And he does this really sweet smile. My heart
- 29:21melted. Emmett’s got this, like, smize thing.
- 29:24He's so good at it. Tyra Banks is so jealous.
- 29:27Tyra's gonna come for you, Sean. You better watch
- 29:29out. What do they find in the car, though? Yeah.
- 29:31It's a guitar pick. Guitar pick. And then Emmett
- 29:34has a little, like, I just remembered. And then
- 29:37the two of them play, like, a little game of
- 29:38charades. It's funny because he's, like, half
- 29:41signing, half miming for her. Yeah, it's... She's
- 29:44bad at it. She's bad at it. I think, at least.
- 29:47He's like, when Daphne and I were kids, and it's
- 29:49so clear what he's saying. And she's like, when
- 29:51you were short? Obviously, it's when you were
- 29:53little. Yeah. What do you mean when you were short. He's
- 29:56mouthing the word little. He is. I mean, she's
- 29:58really bad at lipreading. Emmett's a really good
- 30:00communicator. He is. And she does say that. She's
- 30:03like, this is a rocking game of charades. Rocking
- 30:06game of charades. Yeah, but anyways, what Emmett
- 30:09eventually does communicate to her was, I remember
- 30:12when Daphne and I were short, were little, that
- 30:15Regina had a guitar case and Daphne and I tried
- 30:18to open it and she got really mad and she snatched
- 30:21it away. And if you want, Melody, my mother,
- 30:24and I have Regina's boxes in the garage and you should come over tomorrow. And I like how he signed tomorrow. He just pointed forward. Instead of the sign for tomorrow. I love that they are
- 30:35about to make some type of flirtation work. Those
- 30:39teenage hormones are strong. They do not speak
- 30:41any of the same languages. But he's also really
- 30:43enthusiastic to see her because he's like, come
- 30:45tomorrow. Yeah. You. Me. Tomorrow. I know. Are we
- 30:48meant to believe that Emmett doesn't have tons
- 30:50of hot deaf girls at Carlton trying to get with
- 30:53him? He's so cute. I think his eyes were on Daphne
- 30:57before. I guess so. And now he's like, here's
- 31:00the original Daphne. The OG Daphne. What if it
- 31:02was her? What if it was? So yeah. And then our
- 31:06Daphne's back at Buckner and she's really distressed
- 31:10and panicked and feels like everyone's staring
- 31:12at her. And so she walks into the road. But Wilke’s
- 31:16there and saves the day. He saves the day. I
- 31:19still don't feel like, realistically, I'm like,
- 31:21I don't feel like she would have walked into
- 31:23the road. No. Use your eyes. But whatever. I
- 31:27understand you're not paying attention. And I
- 31:29will confess, I have been stupid. And I've not
- 31:32looked both ways before I cross. And now I'm
- 31:34like, whoa, okay. I guess. She's also on a campus.
- 31:37I'm like, why is there a car there? Yeah, and
- 31:39that guy was speeding in the school zone. Then
- 31:42she comes home and Regina is sim-comming to
- 31:45her again. Yeah, I wrote that down. How well
- 31:47the Mission Hills ladies are tipping. Yeah, and
- 31:50Regina's like, I'm having a great time. I am
- 31:52rich. And Daphne's like, hey, why didn't you
- 31:54get me a cochlear? Conversation really shifts.
- 31:57And Regina's like, well, I like that she's open
- 32:00to the conversation instead of being like, because
- 32:02you're fine. Yeah. And that's it. But she's like,
- 32:05okay, let's talk about it. But she rightfully
- 32:07says, the school should accommodate you. I'm
- 32:09sorry you didn't hear the bell, but that's okay.
- 32:12You'll get a timer with lights. And then Daphne's
- 32:14like, well, I don't want to bring my own deaf
- 32:16things to school. Sure, I get it. I think at
- 32:19that age, you just do not want to stand out.
- 32:21No. In the slightest. Well, she clearly wants
- 32:24to stand out a little because of all the stupid
- 32:26outfits she's wearing. But I understand what
- 32:29you mean. Thank you. But then Regina rightfully
- 32:31says, like, girl, that's life. That's being disabled.
- 32:35You compensate and you work twice as hard. And
- 32:37then there's this interesting part where Regina
- 32:40was saying, like, if you get a cochlear implant,
- 32:43you're not going to be deaf or hearing. You'll
- 32:46be nowhere. Yeah, I wrote that down, too. And
- 32:49I felt very... conflicted because you're saying
- 32:52that you're not going to have any identity and
- 32:54I do think that was the sentiment in the deaf
- 32:56community regarding cochlear implants for a long
- 32:58time. Now thankfully they're more accepted and
- 33:01they're seen as like a tool for communication
- 33:03rather than something that needs to be fixed
- 33:06or something that's going to eradicate a minority
- 33:09group. Yeah. But also, Daphne is fluent
- 33:13in sign. Getting the cochlear implant is not just
- 33:16going to just make that go away Yeah. It's not
- 33:19going to just make her involvement in deaf culture
- 33:21and her presence at Carlton and go away. It's not
- 33:25the equivalent of, like, a four -month -old baby
- 33:27getting implanted. So, yeah. I did kind of resent
- 33:30when Regina was like, you won't be deaf anymore.
- 33:33You'll just be, like, nothing. Also because that's
- 33:35not for her to say. It is not for her to say.
- 33:38Not for Miss Regina Simcom Vasquez to say. Thank
- 33:41you. Yeah, I think it just had me thinking about
- 33:43the generational divide now regarding the perspectives
- 33:46on cochlear implants, because I think definitely
- 33:48the older generation of deaf people have a more
- 33:51negative view of cochlear implants. And I think
- 33:54if you wear cochlear implants, they see you as
- 33:56someone who's not really in the deaf community,
- 33:58as opposed to people who are younger. And then
- 34:01they're like, oh yeah, you're one of us. When
- 34:04was the technology invented? Do we think that's
- 34:06part of the reason? I am the first generation
- 34:08of children who was implanted. Okay, wow. Yeah.
- 34:12I find that older people, I would say like 50
- 34:15plus, are kind of weird about it. Well, they're
- 34:17kind of just like, like, it's not like I'm not
- 34:19invited to the events, but I think they kind
- 34:21of treat me as like, not one of them. Also, probably
- 34:25because I learned sign later. Like, they kind
- 34:27of dumb it down for me. And then I think the
- 34:30younger generation is like, yeah, you’re one of
- 34:32us. I have a cochlear implant too. It's a welcome
- 34:35change, I think. That doesn't have to be this
- 34:37black and white, either or thing. Yeah. It's a
- 34:40community. It's not a monolith. Yeah. But I also
- 34:43think that was the thing back then. I think that's
- 34:45what doctors recommended. Like, the kid learns
- 34:47one language and one language only. And it needs
- 34:50to be English, because English is... Those hearing
- 34:53-ass doctors. Yeah, those hearing -ass doctors.
- 34:55Like, English is the superior language, or spoken
- 34:58language is the superior language. But I think
- 35:00now research has shown that... It's more like
- 35:03a total communication approach. Any access to
- 35:06communication is the best thing ever. Yeah. Which
- 35:09makes sense to me. Any and all language. Any
- 35:11and all language. And signing is pretty fucking
- 35:15cool. So yeah, that was an interesting thing.
- 35:17And Regina's like, did Kathryn put you up to
- 35:20this? And Daphne's like, no, she just was asking.
- 35:23She was just asking. And Regina's like, it's
- 35:26okay. I won't tell her. And then immediately foes
- 35:28to talk to her. She says, no, no, it's fine. I think
- 35:31I would do that as a parent, though. Like, oh,
- 35:34okay, thanks for telling me. And then immediately
- 35:36be like, why the hell would you do that? Oh,
- 35:38for sure. Yeah. Of course I'm not going to tell
- 35:40her. It's fine. And then storms downstairs. And
- 35:43then go and punch her in the face. Yeah, exactly.
- 35:45And that's the right thing to do as a parent.
- 35:47It is. Yeah, Regina's, like, mama bear instinct.
- 35:50For once. For once. For once. This is really
- 35:53kind of her only thing that she gets like this
- 35:55about, actually. Like, she's very - But even
- 35:57in prior episodes, like - What was it? She said
- 36:00something a couple episodes about, like, it's
- 36:02up to you to advocate for yourself. Yes. Daphne's
- 36:05still a child. You should be doing some of the
- 36:07heavy lifting. So I think maybe Regina realized
- 36:09that. I think maybe Regina was like, oh, you're
- 36:11not going to advocate for yourself. You're just
- 36:13going to let Kathryn bully you into thinking
- 36:15about getting a cochlear. Yeah. So, yeah, she
- 36:18shows up and yells at Kathryn and is like,
- 36:22you got to fucking step up. Yeah, Daphne's done
- 36:25all the work. Why haven't you? Daphne’s learned
- 36:27to lipread. She's speaking. What have you done to
- 36:30meet her halfway? You haven't made any effort.
- 36:32The only effort she's made is like, hey, do you
- 36:34want to have brain surgery? Like, I'll pay for
- 36:36it. Yeah. Do you want someone to drill into your
- 36:39skull and have debilitating pain for several
- 36:42days and then go to many doctor's appointments
- 36:45and speech therapists for the rest of your natural
- 36:48life? But she's not going to Google how to say
- 36:51anything. No. So, yeah. She's like, learn ASL.
- 36:56For the love of God. Yeah. She grabs her hands.
- 36:59Yeah. She's like, use these. And I never forgot
- 37:01that. I remember seeing that as a kid and being
- 37:04like, whoa. So true. And I always remember what
- 37:06she said was, like, the sooner you learn ASL,
- 37:09the sooner you'll get to know this beautiful
- 37:11daughter you have. She said that you gave birth
- 37:14to. Yeah, you gave birth. Yeah, I did start crying.
- 37:16So. That makes sense. So they're having that
- 37:19interaction and then Bay. Sees Daphne. Daphne's
- 37:22all glum. Daphne's really down. I feel like in
- 37:26this episode, the light on Daphne's darker. Usually
- 37:30she's much more bright because she's kind of
- 37:32depressed and gloomy this episode. The light is
- 37:35darker. Yeah, no, you're so right. But Bay’s
- 37:38being really sweet here. She's like, no one cares.
- 37:40I didn't hear about the rumors at school. Yeah,
- 37:43and then she proceeds to explain all the stupid
- 37:45stuff that Buckner students have done just that
- 37:47day alone. And then, ugh. Daphne talks about
- 37:51her memories from hearing school and, like, her
- 37:54trauma. Yeah. And why she's feeling like that.
- 37:57It's so hard to listen to. It's really hard.
- 38:00And this is the experience of a lot of deaf people
- 38:02in the hearing world. And as I was watching this
- 38:07today, I was like, this is so interesting because
- 38:10Katie LeClerc probably did not experience this
- 38:13as a child. Yeah. I just think it... This would
- 38:16have been a time where it would have been so
- 38:18impactful to have someone who was actually, like,
- 38:22capital D deaf and maybe who had experienced
- 38:24something like that. Yeah. And not that you have
- 38:27to have the same experiences as the person you're
- 38:29acting as, but, like... No, but I understand.
- 38:33Thank you. But, yeah, I just... Because as I
- 38:35was watching her, I was like, but you still don't,
- 38:37like, get it. Mm -hmm. I don't know. But it is
- 38:41heartbreaking. She is saying, like... I went
- 38:43to hearing school and all the kids were horribly
- 38:45bullying me. They ostracized her. She didn't
- 38:48get any birthday cards. And they called her the
- 38:50R word. Horrible word. It's having a resurgence
- 38:53now. I hate it. Fuck that. Fuck that. And one
- 38:56day, she was walking home and some girls were
- 38:59picking on her. And little Emmett walked by and
- 39:02started to scream at them. Yeah. And said, don't
- 39:06you ever talk to her again. It's like a fairy
- 39:08tale. He grabs her hand and then they walk to
- 39:11his house with Melody. And she sees some sign
- 39:13for the first time. When she describes it, it
- 39:16is so emotional. It is. It gives me chills right
- 39:19now. I know, I also have chills. It's the first
- 39:22time she ever, first I've known any time she's
- 39:24ever heard him speak. And it's the first time
- 39:26she sees ASL. Yeah. Yeah, Melody takes her home.
- 39:29And then she gets Regina. She sits her down.
- 39:32She says, you have to learn sign language. and
- 39:35this is what's going to happen yeah and then
- 39:37obviously it changes Daphne's entire life. Absolutely
- 39:40and then I think also Bay is like oh Emmett rocks.
- 39:44There's tears in Bay's eyes but then there are
- 39:47also like it's also like beating hearts like
- 39:49she's she's like yeah in awe of this story. I
- 39:54want to pause this sort of like emotional thing
- 39:57that I'm feeling just for a minute because why
- 39:59the fuck was she eight years old and she didn't
- 40:01have access to any language Yeah, I don't know.
- 40:05It sounds like, yeah, when she went to the school
- 40:07and there was no interpreter, obviously. Probably
- 40:10did speech therapy. Through the school. She went
- 40:13to a public school. I mean, maybe, but she says
- 40:16to Regina earlier in the episode, I can read
- 40:19lips now. Yeah. Now. She's like, it won't be
- 40:22like when I was little. So there was a time where
- 40:25she was in school and she couldn't read lips.
- 40:28And she didn't have... access to sign language.
- 40:30So she went deaf at three, and then she didn't
- 40:33learn ASL until she was eight. So there was five
- 40:35years. Yeah, there were five years. Of severe
- 40:37language deprivation. Yeah. And so this is where
- 40:40sometimes I get, like, I'm mad. Like, I'm mad
- 40:43right now. But to be fair, so she lost her hearing
- 40:46at three, so she did know some English beforehand.
- 40:49But yeah, you're right, yeah. Five years of not
- 40:52hearing, but also, like, no communication. Yeah,
- 40:54or, like, communication that's so laden with
- 40:58struggle. And I think there's a lot of, in this
- 41:02show, a push to be like, Regina is just as good
- 41:06of a mother as the Kennishes. And I think that's
- 41:09like, what the fuck was she doing? I don't know.
- 41:12Like, I understand her being like. Well, she
- 41:14had hearing aids, but of course they didn't do anything.
- 41:16But her being like, well, of course I thought
- 41:18about the cochlear implant, but we didn't do
- 41:22it. I don't know. Which is fine. Which is totally
- 41:25fine. But you have to give her language. You
- 41:29gotta give her some form of communication. Also,
- 41:31if she learned about the cochlear implant, she
- 41:33must have talked to someone who also knew about
- 41:36sign language then, no? I mean, I know it's so
- 41:39pushed. I know that, like, even the audiologist
- 41:43world is, like, very hearing -centered. Yeah.
- 41:47And they're not, especially back then, were not
- 41:50propping up sign language. But had Regina never
- 41:52heard of sign language beforehand? Right. This is
- 41:55not explored in the show at all. No, that's my
- 41:58big gripe. This is a huge aspect that I feel
- 42:02would taint her relationship with Regina. Personally,
- 42:06it taints the way I look at Regina as a mother.
- 42:08I think this is a huge way that she failed Daphne.
- 42:11Absolutely. And they never talk about it. Never.
- 42:14I'm going to maybe assume that she had hearing
- 42:18aids. And she was probably doing speech therapy
- 42:21in school, maybe once a week, or maybe not at
- 42:24all. It feels like a very underfunded public
- 42:26school. And she kind of just sat in the front
- 42:29row and tried to guess what the teachers were
- 42:31saying. Yeah. But yeah, it's infuriating. Yeah.
- 42:35So it was like simultaneously, wow, what a beautiful
- 42:38story. This is the foundation of her friendship
- 42:41with Emmett. This is the foundation of her relationship
- 42:43with Melody. And then also, like, just what the
- 42:46fuck, Regina? I also wonder if Regina knew about
- 42:49ASL. Like, surely you must have. She must have
- 42:52knew, like, ASL was a thing, but she was like,
- 42:54whatever, I don't have time for that. And it
- 42:57wasn't until, like, Melody sat her down and,
- 43:00like, implored her. Like, you have to. Because,
- 43:03like, your daughter needs communication for the
- 43:05love of God. Daphne describing her, like, getting
- 43:08bullied and ostracized at school, like, sure,
- 43:10that's not totally Regina's fault, but you depriving
- 43:13your child of language. Feels like it leads to
- 43:16situations like that where she can't communicate
- 43:18with people. How is she going to tell people
- 43:20she's being bullied, for one thing? Right. How
- 43:23is she going to tell them to fuck off? How is
- 43:25she going to tell them to fuck off? How is she
- 43:26going to say she's not feeling safe? Yeah. Or
- 43:29she's struggling or anything. Or, like, if she's
- 43:31hungry or something. Something simple. It's infuriating.
- 43:34And I don't think this is something the show
- 43:37ever goes into. Like, what happens in these five
- 43:39years? Yeah, they're just lost. They're just,
- 43:42like, dark years. I don't know. It's kind of
- 43:45a miracle that Daphne is not as traumatized.
- 43:47She's actually being really chill and cool about
- 43:49everything, considering. No, I, yeah, I'd be
- 43:52mad. We're going to have to move on from that,
- 43:54I guess, because everyone else in the show has.
- 43:57Basically, yeah. Yeah. I'm mad. I'm a little
- 44:00worked up right now, but I'm okay. Oh, yeah,
- 44:02I feel heated. Where are we at now? Is it when
- 44:04Toby goes to Daddy? Yeah, Toby's like, Daddy,
- 44:08I'm in trouble. Yeah. It does seem like he's
- 44:13been down this road before. For sure. Because
- 44:15John, like, pulls out his pocketbook as he's
- 44:17lecturing him. But he doesn't say, get a job.
- 44:20Yeah. No. He just says, like, you need to be
- 44:23responsible for your decisions as he's writing
- 44:25the check. As he's filling out, like, Toby Kennish.
- 44:28And then he's like, how much are we talking about
- 44:30here? 1,000? 2,000? Don't tell me it's more
- 44:34than 3,000. And then Toby's like, never mind.
- 44:36Yeah, we haven't really mentioned it much in
- 44:38this episode, but Toby and Wilke are, like,
- 44:40teaming up to steal a test from Buckner. And
- 44:43sell the test for $1,000 each. Each test, yeah.
- 44:47Each test to students, which is a crazy cost.
- 44:49Which, if those students were smart, they would
- 44:51just buy one and then share it. But, like, whatever.
- 44:54I guess if they were really smart, they'd just
- 44:56study for their fucking test. But the point is,
- 44:58though, they gotta get into Harvard. Yeah, I guess
- 45:00so. He tells Wilke, like, I'm not going to back
- 45:03out of them stealing the test. And then clearly
- 45:05he goes to Daddy because he's hoping he's going
- 45:07to be able to back out of stealing this test.
- 45:09But yeah, he's too embarrassed and ashamed. Don't
- 45:13worry. I'm going to take care of this, but he's
- 45:15going to take care of it with crime. Full crime.
- 45:18Mission Impossible style heist in the school.
- 45:20It's too easy. Yeah. They just, like, steal a
- 45:23janitor key card. Just walks right in, takes
- 45:26a piece of paper that says chemistry test, and
- 45:29that's it. That's it it was so easy yeah and
- 45:33there were no cameras? I- 2011 i wonder. They
- 45:37say they're on to them later like Wilke says the
- 45:40teacher is on to us. Couldn't they look at the cameras?
- 45:41For sure okay okay. Anyways oh yeah after the
- 45:46um tear-jerking story from Daphne, Bay is like
- 45:50I actually do have to go. Yeah Emmett texts her
- 45:53to be like, come over and she's like, oh, okay.
- 45:56Shows up, yeah, literally. Oh, heart eyes.
- 45:58He opens the door with his beautiful little smile
- 46:00and she's like, oh my god, I wanna... And he's
- 46:03smizing. Yeah, I know. And so she’s like, kiss
- 46:05him. Go to the garage. Melody’s not there, I
- 46:08guess. And they find a briefcase and inside there's
- 46:12love songs for Regina, a cassette tape with the
- 46:15initials A .S. Okay, one step closer. Yeah, and
- 46:18then she opens another part of the briefcase
- 46:20and it's her birth certificate. Which is crazy
- 46:22to me that Regina didn't bring that with her.
- 46:25Yeah. But I guess it's because she didn't want
- 46:28the Kennishes just to find it. That's my guess.
- 46:30The birth certificate? Yeah. But she brings the
- 46:32guitar case, which, sorry, we know what's inside.
- 46:35I'm not going to spoil it. Very incriminating.
- 46:37But she doesn't bring her birth certificate?
- 46:39Her daughter's birth certificate? I don't know.
- 46:41Okay, whatever. Yeah, but anyways, we find the
- 46:44birth certificate and we find out her dad's name.
- 46:47It's Angelo Sorrento. And we find out that her
- 46:50and Daphne's birthdays are October 22nd, 1995.
- 46:54Libras. Slay. And I do think their 16th birthday
- 46:57comes up later this episode, so this does confirm
- 46:59that they are 15 at this moment. Yeah. Bay listens
- 47:02to the cassette, and she's like, this rocks.
- 47:05Hi, Dad. Immediately calls him Dad. Yeah, she's,
- 47:08like, playing it. Because it was songs for the
- 47:10baby. Yeah. She was the baby. She was the baby.
- 47:15It's really sweet. It's a nice connection to
- 47:17him. She feels very connected to him. She feels
- 47:19very connected to Emmett, who for some reason
- 47:21puts on a little pirate costume in the middle
- 47:23of them looking in the garage. They're having
- 47:25a little fun. It's cringe, but it's cute. It's
- 47:28very, like, TV show montage of someone trying
- 47:31on clothes and someone shaking their head and
- 47:33being like, nuh-uh. Exactly, except they only
- 47:35do it once. Only do it once. Yeah, they said
- 47:37we don't actually have a montage budget, but,
- 47:39like, let's have a little moment. I like how
- 47:41geeky he is, though, because he does make a net.
- 47:43He says, AS is Anakin Skywalker. I know.
- 47:46And Bay's like, I don't know what you just signed, but
- 47:47that's great, honey. It's really cute. Also,
- 47:50when Bay is dancing to the mixtape later, she's
- 47:52wearing an outfit that I don't hate. Ooh. You
- 47:55know, it's a great day for Bay. Yeah, it's a
- 47:57really great day for Bay. For once. For once,
- 47:59she looks good. She's got good music on. She's
- 48:04got a potential boyfriend coming her way. A very
- 48:07cute boy. She doesn't seem very sad about Ty
- 48:10in this episode, I will say. We've sort of really
- 48:12left that behind. I completely forgot about that.
- 48:14I wonder if the actor had to go. I thought you
- 48:17said he had to film something else. Did I say
- 48:19that? That sounds like something I would say.
- 48:21I thought it was something you would say. I'll
- 48:23look it up at some point. I think, yeah, I just
- 48:25feel like they really rushed his character out
- 48:28the door. Maybe because they liked Sean Berdy
- 48:30so much. And they were like, let's get him more
- 48:32in here. I don't know. But yeah, the next day,
- 48:36Daphne has baked the teacher chocolates. Petit
- 48:39fours. What is that? You're asking the wrong person.
- 48:41Okay. It looks like it's like little chocolate
- 48:43treats. The teacher is not deserving of those,
- 48:46but I guess she's just like put her game face
- 48:48on and this is how she. Yeah, but she says like,
- 48:51okay, this is what we're going to do. We're going
- 48:53to actually cook for once and you're not going
- 48:55to slow down. And I have the interpreter and I'll
- 48:57look at the interpreter if I need help. Yeah. And
- 49:00then she turns to Clover and says, I’d offer you
- 49:03one, but you might catch being deaf. Sick burn,
- 49:06Daphne. Sick burn. It was tough to watch. I'm
- 49:09proud of her, but I'm also like. It's just so
- 49:12after school special. I know. Just call her a
- 49:14bitch and get it over with. And Clover doesn't
- 49:16even seem fazed. She's like, all right. Yeah.
- 49:18Well, I think Clover is like too dumb to realize
- 49:20anything that's going on. And then back at the
- 49:23Kennish house, this whole episode, basically,
- 49:26John and Kathryn have been going back and forth
- 49:28since John was intimidated on the golf course.
- 49:31Right. About whether they should pursue the lawsuit.
- 49:33So then. John and Kathryn finally decide. It's
- 49:37sweet. John's like, I don't even want the money.
- 49:39I just want them to say that they're sorry. Which
- 49:41they will never do. Which they'll never do. The
- 49:43company will never apologize. No, legally. Because
- 49:45it puts them in the wrong. Yeah. But then they
- 49:48decide they're going to take the settlement offer
- 49:50because he just wants it to be done with.
- 49:52He realizes it's stressing out his wife and his
- 49:54family. So they call the lawyer. Hello, Mr. Lawyer
- 49:57or Mrs. Lawyer. It's Ms. Lawyer. And they say,
- 50:00we're going to take the settlement. She said,
- 50:01actually, the hospital wants to go to trial
- 50:03they think they found something and John and Kathryn
- 50:06are like I don't know what that's about and we don't
- 50:09know what that's about. But we do. TBD dot dot
- 50:11dot .Yeah and then Kathryn shows up to Regina
- 50:15and she's so sad she has a little sad face and
- 50:19she walks in. But then she signs! And she signs
- 50:22you're right I want to learn. And it's so sweet
- 50:26and Regina gives her a big hug and she's like
- 50:28it's beautiful I’m so proud and yeah It makes
- 50:32me tear up every time. Like, that is truly how
- 50:35I react anytime someone in my life learns sign.
- 50:39Like, even just a little bit. I'm like, oh, my
- 50:41God. I love it so much. Thank you. She's also,
- 50:44like, so, she's, like, embarrassed because she
- 50:46doesn't feel like she's doing it well. But she
- 50:48signed it perfectly. Yeah, she signed it great.
- 50:51Yeah. Keep it up, Kathryn. I know. She's the
- 50:54first one, but not the last. And not the last.
- 50:57Yeah, guys, this is how you can make other people
- 50:59feel if you want. And we have resources in our
- 51:01show notes. We do. It's in our show notes. If
- 51:03you're interested in learning. Yeah. And then
- 51:06Bay is looking up Angelo Sorrento. On SearchBerzerk
- 51:10.com. I'm glad you caught that. Because if you
- 51:13go on SearchBerzerk .com, which I did, it just
- 51:16takes you to the Freeform website. I guess
- 51:18they bought the domain. Oh, that's hilarious.
- 51:21Yeah. I love when shows do that. I think that's
- 51:24what you have to do if you show like a URL. Oh
- 51:27my god really? I think you have to have, you have
- 51:29to have it. Oh I thought that shows were just
- 51:32like doing that for cute marketing. No it's like
- 51:35well you can’t use that Google because, right, you
- 51:37don't have the copyright so usually they create
- 51:39their own and then they like keep the URL. Like
- 51:42when they um make a phone number, like, a real
- 51:45phone number, and then you call it, and, like,
- 51:47something from the show plays on the voicemail.
- 51:49Love that. Yeah, they did that in iCarly all
- 51:51the time. Yes. iCarly always had, like, fake.
- 51:54Yeah. It was always, like, close to Apple or
- 51:56something, or Google. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The pear.
- 51:59The pear stuff. The pear phones, yeah.
- 52:01Yeah. And then they text Emmett. And did you
- 52:04notice the phone interface on his Blackberry?
- 52:06Yes. And did you notice that it was frozen? No,
- 52:10I didn't clock that. Yeah, it's like a freeze
- 52:13frame as she's texting and then it like zooms
- 52:16in onto the phone. It's very weird. But she says,
- 52:19yeah, 45 Angelo Sorrentos in America, which
- 52:23seems very small. That does seem very small to
- 52:25me as well. And three in Missouri, again, also
- 52:27seems very small, but exciting. And then she
- 52:30says, one is mine. One is mine. And then Emmett
- 52:33gets that text and he's like sitting in his bed
- 52:35and he's kind of smizing. He's like, yeah. Yeah.
- 52:37Yeah, she's cute. She's texting me. I love it.
- 52:40And then we see Regina in her room and she opens
- 52:43the closet doors. And what's in there? The guitar
- 52:45case. Oh my gosh, the guitar case. Yeah. What
- 52:48is in that guitar case? What is in there? This
- 52:51is one of the best episodes of the series, in
- 52:53my opinion. I think it starts a great connection
- 52:56with Bay and Emmett. We all have heart eyes for
- 52:59Emmett, especially after learning that story.
- 53:01He's her hero. He can be her hero, baby. Thank
- 53:05you, Enrique. Kathryn has a little awakening.
- 53:07Long overdue already, but I love it. I can't
- 53:09wait for Angelo to show up because that actor
- 53:12is so hot. Sorry, I know. You're a lesbian. You
- 53:15don't care. Do you know that sexy Squidward?
- 53:18That's kind of what he reminds me of. Because
- 53:20he has the bone structure of Michelangelo's David?
- 53:23Yeah. Okay. He's got the lips. Yeah, he's gorgeous.
- 53:27He's a gorgeous man. He's in, um... I think Austin
- 53:30Butler's the hottest one of them all. Yeah. I
- 53:33don't disagree, but Angelo's so dreamy. I loved,
- 53:37I love this episode. I'm, like, shout out to
- 53:40Lucas Grabeel’s acting switch up, because I'm,
- 53:42like, kind of scared of him in this part of the
- 53:45show. Yeah. The last episode, too. Scared the
- 53:48hell out of me. I'm 17, and I'm scared of Sabrina
- 53:50Carpenter. That's how I feel. Mark's safe from
- 53:53Sabrina Carpenter. The outfits weren't even that
- 53:55bad in this episode. Except the open-toed shoes
- 53:57in the kitchen. I mean, that whole, yeah, that
- 54:00whole outfit was kind of a mess. But Bay is doing
- 54:01good. Bay is doing good. Bay also was not that
- 54:04annoying in this episode. Because, you know,
- 54:06I'm kind of annoyed by her usually. She was being
- 54:07very sweet to Daphne. I know. I wanted them to
- 54:10hug when they, like, have that emotional. You
- 54:12could tell. I feel like the actresses wanted
- 54:14them to hug, too. Just some great, some great
- 54:17cry acting in this episode. I think not every
- 54:20actor can, like, do a good, like, tear up as
- 54:22they give an emotional speech. And everyone does
- 54:25it so well in this. Yeah, that's true. The tears
- 54:28are flowing. I wonder if they had a tear stick
- 54:30on set or if those were all natural. Hopefully
- 54:32one day we can ask. We'd love that. Did you get
- 54:35the Visine? Let us know.
