- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is Jacob Emerson with the
- 0:02Becker's Payer Issues podcast.
- 0:04Thrilled today to be joined by Richard Green,
- 0:06who is the president of CleverCare Health Plan.
- 0:09Richard, thank you so much for taking the
- 0:11time to be with me on the podcast
- 0:12today. Thank you, Jacob. It's my pleasure.
- 0:15Absolutely. And, Richard, before we dive into everything
- 0:17we wanna talk with you about, can you
- 0:18tell us a little bit more about yourself,
- 0:20your background in health care, and what it
- 0:22is that you do today at CleverCare?
- 0:24Happy to. I'm the president of CleverCare health
- 0:27plan.
- 0:28CleverCare was founded to provide a culturally sensitive
- 0:31and competent Medicare Advantage health plan.
- 0:34We give members access to care that's delivered
- 0:37in their own language and with their own
- 0:39unique cultural traditions in mind. And we have
- 0:41a value based care model that essentially blends
- 0:41eastern and western.
- 0:54Moved into the role of president, where I
- 0:56oversee the day
- 0:57moved into the role of
- 0:59president where I oversee the day to day
- 1:01operations of the company as well as the
- 1:03financial strategy.
- 1:05Before,
- 1:06joining CleverCare,
- 1:08I
- 1:09really dedicated my career nearly thirty years to,
- 1:13financial and operations
- 1:15roles across both payers as well as groups.
- 1:19And most recently, I served as the COO
- 1:22and CFO of AppleCare
- 1:23Medical Management, which was one of the first
- 1:26acquisitions
- 1:27within OptumCare.
- 1:29Wonderful. Well, like I said, we really appreciate
- 1:31you taking the time to join us today,
- 1:33Richard. And I I wanted to get started
- 1:34by talking about some recent news from CleverCare.
- 1:38The company has just opened its its new
- 1:40flagship community center,
- 1:42and which is now the fourth CleverCare community
- 1:45center in California as I understand it. So
- 1:48talk to us a little bit about this
- 1:49new center and and what role your community
- 1:52centers play in in the overall growth and
- 1:55retention strategy at CleverCare and how you wanna
- 1:58measure their impact on on member experience, on
- 2:01outcomes,
- 2:02engagement. Give our listeners a full picture of
- 2:04of how you're thinking about this.
- 2:06Absolutely.
- 2:08You're right. The Rolling Heights Community Center is
- 2:10our fourth location, and our community centers
- 2:13are really at the heart of our mission.
- 2:16And these centers are part of how we
- 2:18invest in our members and deliver
- 2:20on our commitment
- 2:22of being a reliable partner.
- 2:25What makes the center special is that they
- 2:27blend eastern and western approaches to wellness.
- 2:30Our members can attend tai chi classes,
- 2:33participate in community classes on mental health
- 2:36and dental care,
- 2:38or come together for
- 2:40community
- 2:41building events that might include
- 2:43lessons on technology,
- 2:45book clubs, birthday celebrations.
- 2:48And we even have,
- 2:50found some talent within both our associates and
- 2:52our members with, live music. We like to
- 2:54do a lot of, sing alongs.
- 2:56Everything is offered
- 2:58in
- 2:59languages primarily spoken by our members
- 3:02covering, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Korean.
- 3:06The Rowland Heights Center,
- 3:08as I mentioned, is our fourth center joining
- 3:10our centers in Monterey Park,
- 3:12Westminster,
- 3:14and Koreatown.
- 3:16In 2024,
- 3:17our three
- 3:19legacy
- 3:19centers generated nearly four, 18,000 visits, which tells
- 3:23generated nearly four, 18,000 visits, which tells us
- 3:25our members are actively engaging,
- 3:27and we're seeing that engagement,
- 3:30translate into better satisfaction,
- 3:33better retention,
- 3:34and, you know, really increased connectivity with our
- 3:34members. These centers, are actively engaging, and,
- 3:37connectivity with our members.
- 3:39And
- 3:40these centers position us to deliver an exceptional
- 3:43member experience and build deeper, more meaningful relationships
- 3:46with the communities we serve.
- 3:48And these centers are places
- 3:51of connection and belonging, and that's
- 3:53a foundation of our growth.
- 3:55That's fantastic. And then it's amazing to continue
- 3:57to see to build out these community centers
- 3:59in the in the markets that you serve,
- 4:01Richard.
- 4:02I also wonder if, you know, I I
- 4:03wanna talk a little bit about, the the
- 4:05Medicare Advantage landscape more broadly and some of
- 4:08the news and trends we've been seeing this
- 4:11year,
- 4:11with with companies all over the country.
- 4:14We've as you know, we're seeing plans consolidate
- 4:17their offerings, tighten margins heading into 2026.
- 4:20So I wonder if you could explain for
- 4:22us how CleverCare specifically is navigating some of
- 4:25these industry headwinds while continue continuing to invest
- 4:28in in what you just talked about, these
- 4:29culturally tailored care and and community based services.
- 4:34Yes.
- 4:35We believe
- 4:36our combination of eastern and western medicine,
- 4:39along with teachers like the community centers resonate
- 4:42with the, with our community.
- 4:44And we're focused on investing and expanding
- 4:49much like our Rowan Heights Center, which just
- 4:52opened,
- 4:53as as a as a perfect example.
- 4:56We're able to do this because we've proven
- 4:58our model, which honors culture and tradition, delivers
- 5:02financial results.
- 5:04Since '23, we've more than doubled in size,
- 5:07growing to nearly 30,000
- 5:08members.
- 5:10As you alluded to, it's no secret
- 5:13that national payers have found the transition to
- 5:16value based care challenging.
- 5:18Outcomes based models
- 5:21tend to take time to deliver on cost
- 5:23savings,
- 5:24but we feel as though we're leading the
- 5:26way with a sustainable
- 5:28model that works.
- 5:29Central to our success
- 5:31is the trusted relationship
- 5:33we've developed with providers in our network.
- 5:37We ensure seamless claims processing,
- 5:41timely and accurate claims payments.
- 5:43And unique to CleverCare,
- 5:45our network
- 5:47includes 700
- 5:48directly
- 5:49contracted acupuncturists and other nontraditional
- 5:50specialists.
- 5:52We've also maintained stable and reliable benefits
- 5:55over the last couple of years, giving
- 5:57both our members and our brokers
- 6:00confidence in our commitment to them. That stability
- 6:03combined with our financial performance is what has
- 6:06allowed us to continue to invest
- 6:09in things like our community center while others
- 6:11may be pulling back.
- 6:13Sure. That makes a lot of sense. And
- 6:15and, clearly, CleverCare is a very unique health
- 6:17plan in terms of its, its offerings and
- 6:20benefits, and it's clearly working in terms of
- 6:22the growth you've seen in enrollment over the
- 6:24last few years, Richard. I wonder in that
- 6:26vein where you see the biggest openings for
- 6:29innovation or or differentiation
- 6:31in in Medicare Advantage over the next few
- 6:32years, whether that's in,
- 6:35growth in your benefit design, care delivery, member
- 6:37engagement.
- 6:38How do you continue to see CleverCare innovate
- 6:41in in the MA space?
- 6:43Sure. I think the biggest opportunity
- 6:45is exactly,
- 6:47what we've been doing at CleverCare
- 6:49is just continuing to create a model that
- 6:51blends eastern and western medicine
- 6:54while focusing on removing barriers and improving outcomes.
- 6:59In, benefit design, there's a real opportunity to
- 7:02reflect members' actual health traditions.
- 7:06As I mentioned earlier, our network includes 700
- 7:09directly contracted acupuncturists,
- 7:12and these aren't extras.
- 7:14In fact, for many people, they are core
- 7:16to how they approach
- 7:18health and wellness
- 7:19and help create a sense of real connection.
- 7:24In care delivery,
- 7:25being a reliable, transparent, and trustworthy partner matters
- 7:29and creates a foundation for better care delivery.
- 7:33And in member engagement, physical presence in communities
- 7:36through our centers makes a difference.
- 7:39Engagement,
- 7:40especially when delivered
- 7:42in our members'
- 7:44own language, is what drives better outcome.
- 7:47And the plans that will differentiate themselves are
- 7:49the ones that genuinely understand and serve their
- 7:52members' unique needs
- 7:54while maintaining
- 7:57financial stability to deliver on their commitments year
- 7:59after year.
- 8:01Absolutely. And and we're for sticking on that
- 8:03is our is our last question, Richard, in
- 8:05terms of some of the advice or final
- 8:07thoughts you would offer all the other insurers
- 8:09listening
- 8:13what what would you
- 8:14share with them? At first, I would I
- 8:17would say
- 8:18don't chase unsustainable growth.
- 8:21Build something that lasts through strong operational
- 8:24foundations,
- 8:25genuine relationships
- 8:28with the provider network,
- 8:30and a clear understanding of the communities you
- 8:33serve.
- 8:34The industry is at such a critical moment,
- 8:36so it's crucial to understand that sustainable growth
- 8:40requires a different approach than the past.
- 8:43Our approach is to focus on maintaining the
- 8:45stability
- 8:47that allows us to invest for the long
- 8:49term.
- 8:50And to that point,
- 8:52we're posed for continued growth in investing.
- 8:55And over the last few months, we've brought
- 8:57on a new chief information officer,
- 9:00vice president of operations,
- 9:02and vice president of sales, all seasoned leaders
- 9:05that understand Medicare Advantage. And that's the kind
- 9:08of investment that
- 9:11positions ourselves as well as others for sustainable
- 9:14successful growth.
- 9:16Wonderful. Well, Richard, I hope you keep us
- 9:18posted on the continued innovations and and growth
- 9:21at CleverCare.
- 9:22But I wanna thank you for taking the
- 9:24time to chat with us and and for
- 9:25sharing your insights about all the new stuff
- 9:27going on at the at your company. We
- 9:29really appreciate it.
- 9:31Thank you very much, Jacob. I appreciate the
- 9:33opportunity.
