Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hour number two of the next round presented by Hard
- 0:03Speaker 1: Rock Bets on Sport and State. We start SEC play
- 0:06Speaker 1: tonight with Arkansas Pine Bluff in Missouri. New quarterback situation there.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Oklahoma gets on the field tomorrow night and then the
- 0:14Speaker 1: rest of the SEC on Saturday and Sunday. Man, I
- 0:17Speaker 1: had a chance to hang out with Gene Chizik recently. Man,
- 0:20Speaker 1: this guy knows ball. I love to hear him talk.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Great motivator. What's his Twitter stuff? Chizdom? Yeah, words of Chizdom.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Words of Chizdom. Fascinating stuff.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Coach, did you give Dunaway some words of Chizdom? He
- 0:32Speaker 2: needed them. I hope you left him with some.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Well, here's the thing, Ryan. I went into the event
- 0:38Speaker 3: thinking I liked Jim. And then the event happened. And
- 0:44Speaker 3: now I'm not so sure. But he is funny. I
- 0:48Speaker 3: will tell you that. I love him. He did a
- 0:50Speaker 3: great job. We had a great event that night. So
- 0:54Speaker 3: we had a lot of fun.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It did not dawn on me that when I was
- 0:56Speaker 1: covering Gene Chizik's national championship run, He never knew I
- 1:00Speaker 1: was hosting the Nick Saban show at the same time.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yeah, he revealed that to me that night and it
- 1:06Speaker 3: took me back. It took me about a minute to
- 1:08Speaker 3: gather myself back together. But then I think we came
- 1:12Speaker 3: to a good place.
- 1:14Speaker 4: So, Coach, kind of a broad brush question here. we're
- 1:19Speaker 4: in such a weird time with college football, but like
- 1:21Speaker 4: Oklahoma State this weekend, Eric Morris, a first year guy
- 1:25Speaker 4: is breaking in 65 transfer first year players. Like how
- 1:29Speaker 4: much can you really, and some of those guys are
- 1:31Speaker 4: North Texas, so he brought those over with him, but
- 1:34Speaker 4: how much can you really know about your team when
- 1:37Speaker 4: you have this mass amount? It seems like every team's
- 1:40Speaker 4: bringing in 25 plus before you roll out week one.
- 1:43Speaker 4: How much do you really know?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great question. I remember when we were
- 1:48Speaker 3: at SEC Media Days, I didn't realize this, but we
- 1:51Speaker 3: had Ryan Silverfield on there from Arkansas, and he says
- 1:54Speaker 3: on air, we were doing an interview with him, I've
- 1:57Speaker 3: got 80-plus new players. That's mind-boggling to me. That's a
- 2:02Speaker 3: whole team. So using the example you just used, I
- 2:05Speaker 3: don't know the answer to that. I've never even remotely
- 2:09Speaker 3: been a part of anything that crazy. Now, I retired
- 2:11Speaker 3: after the 23 season. And it was becoming a very
- 2:15Speaker 3: transient college football landscape simply because NIL was growing. It
- 2:21Speaker 3: wasn't where it is now. But you could feel a
- 2:24Speaker 3: little bit of that. The roster's changing and guys slipping
- 2:29Speaker 3: in and out. But to have a wholesale 60 to
- 2:33Speaker 3: 80 guys on a roster, I don't know how you
- 2:35Speaker 3: know what your team looks like. And to be fair,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I don't think you know who your team is until
- 2:41Speaker 3: probably midpoint in the season. Because you have to go
- 2:44Speaker 3: through all of the emotions, right? All the highs, the lows,
- 2:47Speaker 3: the swings, the play good, the play bad. You know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: look at position groups. I'll use the offensive line as
- 2:54Speaker 3: an example. Offensive line, those guys, that group has to
- 2:58Speaker 3: play together for a long time to be in sync,
- 3:02Speaker 3: to be able to, you know, execute and do the
- 3:04Speaker 3: things they need to do. And I'll just use them
- 3:06Speaker 3: as an example. I don't know how you do that.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I mean, there's several teams in our league that that
- 3:11Speaker 3: are literally starting with five new guys. So it's an
- 3:14Speaker 3: enigma to me. It's definitely the challenge of the new
- 3:17Speaker 3: generation coaches that have kind of been raised up through this.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And that's the case they've got to crack, right? They've
- 3:26Speaker 3: got to crack the code for how they get their
- 3:28Speaker 3: team to be known early in the season because you
- 3:33Speaker 3: just don't know who they are, to be frank.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I really believe Alabama coach is the highest ranked team
- 3:39Speaker 1: with the most unknowns on offense. Tell me what you
- 3:43Speaker 1: see on Alabama's offensive side of the football. Are there
- 3:46Speaker 1: a lot of questions there for you?
- 3:50Speaker 3: There is, Jim. I mean, obviously, they're always going to
- 3:53Speaker 3: have talent. We know, you know, Kalen, I think, has
- 3:58Speaker 3: done a really, really good job in terms of, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 3: bringing in talent. that's never been a problem. I think
- 4:04Speaker 3: Nick passed the baton to him. He's done a good
- 4:07Speaker 3: job of that. But in this landscape, if you just
- 4:10Speaker 3: go back last year, the concern that, well, let me
- 4:13Speaker 3: rephrase that. What I'm going to be looking for, because
- 4:17Speaker 3: I see all these ESPN, you know, rankings and how
- 4:22Speaker 3: they come up with these, I don't know. You know
- 4:24Speaker 3: what I mean? That's an enigma to me. But anyway,
- 4:26Speaker 3: they're ranked really high in just about any poll you
- 4:29Speaker 3: look at, right? But The question would be to me
- 4:34Speaker 3: if it wasn't Alabama with all of the clout that
- 4:38Speaker 3: they have built up over the Nick Saban years and
- 4:40Speaker 3: even last year. And you can't take away what Kalen
- 4:43Speaker 3: DeBoer did last year going into Athens and beating Georgia
- 4:47Speaker 3: at Georgia, getting to the college football playoff. That's a
- 4:51Speaker 3: big deal. Now, to the Alabama people, that's not enough
- 4:54Speaker 3: because winning a national championship, it's that or bust, right?
- 4:58Speaker 3: But when you look at what he did last year
- 5:00Speaker 3: and then you look at where the weaknesses of the
- 5:02Speaker 3: teams were, they were weak on the offensive line. Well,
- 5:06Speaker 3: they lost essentially almost every single guy except one offensive
- 5:10Speaker 3: lineman that started like six games. Then you look at
- 5:13Speaker 3: a running game that they couldn't get going. They struggled
- 5:16Speaker 3: with that. I thought they were going to go in
- 5:18Speaker 3: and get a really, really productive tailback in the portal,
- 5:22Speaker 3: whatever it takes to get one. If you think about
- 5:25Speaker 3: the national championship teams that Alabama's had, I can't think
- 5:28Speaker 3: of one that could not run the football. And right now,
- 5:31Speaker 3: based on last year, they could not. So the offensive
- 5:34Speaker 3: line lost everybody. The running back room got one year older,
- 5:40Speaker 3: but they didn't add anything to that room. And now
- 5:45Speaker 3: you've got a new starting quarterback, which I love the
- 5:49Speaker 3: prospects of Keelan Russell. I really do, guys, because this
- 5:52Speaker 3: day and age when an offensive line is trying to gel,
- 5:57Speaker 3: You've got to have a guy that has escapability back there,
- 5:59Speaker 3: and he certainly has all that. So, yes, Jim, I
- 6:01Speaker 3: have question marks, but it's a really good coaching staff,
- 6:05Speaker 3: and they'll get it done.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Coach Gene Chizik with us. You'll see him on the
- 6:08Speaker 2: SEC Network throughout the week and weekend as we launch
- 6:12Speaker 2: week one of college football. Coach, if you're Tennessee coach
- 6:15Speaker 2: Josh Heupel, you're starting a true freshman quarterback, and you've
- 6:19Speaker 2: got an overmatched opponent in Furman, but the schedule gets
- 6:22Speaker 2: real after that. You've got to go to Georgia Tech next.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Texas is coming up in a couple of weeks. How
- 6:26Speaker 2: do you handle that? I mean, do you just say, hey, Furman,
- 6:29Speaker 2: I'm sorry you're getting a paycheck, but I got to
- 6:31Speaker 2: get my guy some confidence. He's just going to throw
- 6:32Speaker 2: all day. I mean, how do coaches that you've dealt
- 6:35Speaker 2: with generally handle that with a true freshman quarterback making
- 6:39Speaker 2: his first start?
- 6:40Speaker 3: Well, the goal at the end of the day is
- 6:42Speaker 3: to make sure that he's got confidence and that the
- 6:46Speaker 3: people around him believe in him. My guess is that
- 6:50Speaker 3: they have both of those already coming out of camp, right?
- 6:53Speaker 3: They're undefeated right now. So you start out with a
- 6:56Speaker 3: team like Furman where, more than likely, they're going to
- 6:59Speaker 3: be able to go up and down the field at will.
- 7:02Speaker 3: But remember, Tennessee's philosophy offensively, no matter what people think,
- 7:07Speaker 3: everything is about cutting their teeth on running the football.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Deshaun Bishop is back, right? They've got a run game.
- 7:14Speaker 3: They've always had a run game. I don't care who
- 7:16Speaker 3: the starting quarterbacks were. You can go back through the
- 7:18Speaker 3: test of time. Josh Heupel is old school, physical offense. Yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 3: I'm going to spread you out sideline to sideline. If
- 7:24Speaker 3: you don't cover out, I'm going to kick the ball
- 7:26Speaker 3: out there. But I'm going to create space and create
- 7:29Speaker 3: a running game. So that's really good for a young quarterback.
- 7:32Speaker 3: They will do that. He doesn't have to win the game, right?
- 7:36Speaker 3: But he's got to get enough in this game against
- 7:38Speaker 3: Furman where he feels great about passing concept. He feels
- 7:42Speaker 3: great about seeing the field. He feels great about his
- 7:44Speaker 3: escapability and get a feel for his offensive line. But
- 7:47Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you, this kid, if you go
- 7:49Speaker 3: back and you check his oil from high school– He
- 7:52Speaker 3: was something else now. I mean, he's a five-star guy.
- 7:55Speaker 3: He's a real deal guy. I want to say he
- 7:57Speaker 3: won two state championships. I want to say, guys, he
- 8:00Speaker 3: was like 30-something and two as a starter in high school.
- 8:05Speaker 3: And I remember seeing him in our camps at the
- 8:07Speaker 3: University of North Carolina when he was young, saying, this
- 8:11Speaker 3: dude is legit. So, It'll be interesting. And let's not
- 8:14Speaker 3: gloss over the addition of Jim Knowles on defense for Tennessee.
- 8:18Speaker 3: That was a huge deal as well.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Defense still wins championships going back two years ago or
- 8:24Speaker 4: three years ago. Michigan to Ohio State to Indiana, the
- 8:27Speaker 4: second best scoring defense last year in college football. The
- 8:30Speaker 4: best scoring defense last year in the SEC was Oklahoma.
- 8:33Speaker 4: A lot of people believe Venables. I mean, it was
- 8:35Speaker 4: so good. The offense was bad and they still went
- 8:37Speaker 4: to a college football playoff. and hosted a game there.
- 8:40Speaker 4: If I asked you as a defensive mind, who will
- 8:43Speaker 4: have the best defense in the SEC this year, it
- 8:46Speaker 4: would be?
- 8:48Speaker 3: Oklahoma. I'm just telling you now, they've got a lot
- 8:54Speaker 3: of returning experience. Kip Lewis at linebacker that kind of
- 8:58Speaker 3: runs the show. They got a really good solid core
- 9:01Speaker 3: of defensive linemen, especially the bigs in the middle. philosophically, guys,
- 9:06Speaker 3: in my time of being a coordinator for 20 whatever
- 9:09Speaker 3: years I did it, when we had really good defenses,
- 9:13Speaker 3: we were really solid, thick, and big in the middle
- 9:18Speaker 3: of the defense. And if you go to any sport,
- 9:20Speaker 3: you can go to baseball, you can go to basketball,
- 9:22Speaker 3: you can go to football. If you're big, thick, and
- 9:25Speaker 3: strong in the middle of your defense, then you've got
- 9:28Speaker 3: a chance to be good. They have a chance to
- 9:31Speaker 3: be as good on defense or better than regardless of
- 9:34Speaker 3: how many people they lost. And then it's all going
- 9:36Speaker 3: to come down to John Mateer and what this offense
- 9:39Speaker 3: looks like. They totally upgraded their receiving core. They kept
- 9:43Speaker 3: Isaiah Satania. And they got a defense that gives the
- 9:46Speaker 3: offense flexibility and some leeway to struggle some, right? But
- 9:51Speaker 3: I think if the offense is more explosive, John Mateer
- 9:54Speaker 3: is more like he was in the first third of
- 9:57Speaker 3: the season before he got hurt than I think you're
- 10:00Speaker 3: going to see a really, really dangerous Oklahoma team, but
- 10:04Speaker 3: Brent Venables is the best in the business.
- 10:06Speaker 1: When you throw in Byron Brown's tape, when you watch him,
- 10:10Speaker 1: what do you see?
- 10:12Speaker 3: I see a very athletic, good decision-maker, He can make
- 10:19Speaker 3: things happen off schedule, meaning when he's in trouble, he
- 10:25Speaker 3: can get out of trouble and he's a big body.
- 10:27Speaker 3: And the question that everybody asks is, can he take
- 10:31Speaker 3: what he did at South Florida and reproduce that in
- 10:36Speaker 3: this league? And I kind of have to chuckle at
- 10:38Speaker 3: that because my experience over the time, guys, I've had
- 10:41Speaker 3: seven first round quarterbacks on my teams over the years.
- 10:44Speaker 3: And what you see is, guys that just have the
- 10:48Speaker 3: it factor. And he has that. So you say, can
- 10:52Speaker 3: he make that translate into the SEC? Well, I think
- 10:54Speaker 3: he can. Could Trinidad Chambliss, could he do it? He
- 11:01Speaker 3: was at D2. He's a guy. He's a real guy.
- 11:06Speaker 3: He has the it factor. So I think Byron can
- 11:08Speaker 3: do that. He brought some really good receivers over with him.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Keyshawn Singleton, I think he brought with him and a
- 11:15Speaker 3: couple other guys offensively that I think are going to
- 11:17Speaker 3: be impactful. I love Jeremiah Cobb in the running game there, guys.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I think this can be a dangerous offense. It may
- 11:23Speaker 3: take him a while to gel and get some continuity there,
- 11:29Speaker 3: but I like what I see. I think he's confident
- 11:31Speaker 3: if he'll protect the football, which I have every reason
- 11:33Speaker 3: to believe he will, then I think they've got a
- 11:36Speaker 3: chance to be productive on offense. Look, you guys know
- 11:38Speaker 3: at Auburn, all they want is some hope. Just give
- 11:41Speaker 3: them some hope on offense, and I think you know,
- 11:43Speaker 3: in the Baylor game, we'll see. But I think that
- 11:46Speaker 3: Byron Brown, the way Alex runs the offense, the tempo,
- 11:50Speaker 3: the running the football, I think Auburn people have hope
- 11:53Speaker 3: after the first game.
- 11:54Speaker 2: One of the guys that, that frankly left the program
- 11:57Speaker 2: for several reasons, but one of those is because the
- 12:00Speaker 2: production just wasn't there in that offense was Cam Coleman.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And now he is at Texas and you marry him
- 12:06Speaker 2: with Arch Manning. And this seems like a marriage made
- 12:08Speaker 2: in football heaven coach. What, what, What do you expect
- 12:12Speaker 2: to see from Cam Coleman in this Texas offense?
- 12:15Speaker 3: I think you're going to watch him have a breakout year,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and I'm going to tell you why. It's not just
- 12:20Speaker 3: about Cam Coleman. I think it's well documented how talented
- 12:24Speaker 3: the young man is. Some of the catches he made
- 12:27Speaker 3: last year in what you could pretty much consider a
- 12:30Speaker 3: pretty abysmal offense, there were some catches that were head scratchers.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You're going, wow, did that guy just make that catch?
- 12:38Speaker 3: The great advantage that he has is not only that
- 12:42Speaker 3: he has Arch Manning, but I think what Sark did
- 12:45Speaker 3: is he did one of the best jobs in the
- 12:47Speaker 3: offseason of player procurement. He brought in and addressed the
- 12:53Speaker 3: weaknesses of his football team. They could not run the football.
- 12:57Speaker 3: They brought in two basically thousand-yard rushers that can share
- 13:01Speaker 3: the load. They brought in other wide receivers to be
- 13:05Speaker 3: able to go along with the ones they had on
- 13:07Speaker 3: their existing roster. where you can't say I'm just going
- 13:10Speaker 3: to double Cam Coleman the whole time. There's other really
- 13:13Speaker 3: good guys out there as well in those skill positions.
- 13:16Speaker 3: So you've got a Heisman worthy, at least discussion-wise, quarterback.
- 13:22Speaker 3: You've got a running game now that should be taken
- 13:24Speaker 3: to the next level because he addressed the problem. And
- 13:27Speaker 3: you've got more than one guy out there to go
- 13:29Speaker 3: along with Cam. So I think you're going to see
- 13:31Speaker 3: a big year. I think they're going to get him
- 13:33Speaker 3: the football, and I think he's going to probably show
- 13:36Speaker 3: you more of who he is as a player than
- 13:39Speaker 3: he ever had the opportunity to do at Auburn.
- 13:41Speaker 1: In your time at Auburn, you opened up with La Tech,
- 13:45Speaker 1: Arkansas State in the national championship year, Utah State, and
- 13:48Speaker 1: in the last year, Clemson in the game. really probably
- 13:51Speaker 1: should have won there to start off at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
- 13:54Speaker 1: How would you like to do it? If you were
- 13:56Speaker 1: a coach right now, would you like to have an
- 14:00Speaker 1: FCS or a Group 6 game, or would you like
- 14:03Speaker 1: to start out like Clemson and LSU are starting out?
- 14:06Speaker 3: Jim, that depends on the team I have, to be
- 14:08Speaker 3: honest with you. I could give you coach speak and go,
- 14:10Speaker 3: we want to go out there and we want to
- 14:11Speaker 3: play the best game we can in the opening series. No,
- 14:14Speaker 3: that's not what I want to do. I want to
- 14:15Speaker 3: do it based on my team. If I have an
- 14:18Speaker 3: older team, I have a veteran quarterback. We called it AAA. Anyone, anytime, anywhere,
- 14:24Speaker 3: bring it on. I love it. The bigger, the better.
- 14:26Speaker 3: You got me a situation where my quarterback position is
- 14:31Speaker 3: a little bit in question. My offensive line is in
- 14:33Speaker 3: question because we lost four out of the five guys.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Whatever those situations are. When I was a head coach
- 14:40Speaker 3: at Iowa State and Auburn, we ranged anywhere from 100
- 14:43Speaker 3: to zero on that. So if you're asking me, look,
- 14:47Speaker 3: the bottom line is when you're a head coach, it's
- 14:50Speaker 3: all about how many games you win or you get fired.
- 14:53Speaker 3: It's that simple, right? So I want a game that
- 14:57Speaker 3: I can win, and I don't want to open up
- 14:59Speaker 3: with somebody that I know has a veteran squad that's
- 15:02Speaker 3: extremely talented, and I don't have that. Why would I
- 15:05Speaker 3: want to do that? So that we can run out
- 15:07Speaker 3: in front of 90,000 people? I want to win. So
- 15:11Speaker 3: scheduling matters. I think that it depends on what type
- 15:15Speaker 3: of team you have. Every coach would love to open
- 15:17Speaker 3: up in a game like LSU and Clemson if you
- 15:21Speaker 3: have a team that you think right now is worthy
- 15:25Speaker 3: of that billing. And I've seen some opening games that
- 15:29Speaker 3: were big like that, and you got blowouts, and now
- 15:32Speaker 3: all of a sudden you're on your heels for the
- 15:34Speaker 3: next month trying to figure out what happened. So To me,
- 15:38Speaker 3: it could go either way, but for me, it's all
- 15:41Speaker 3: based on what kind of team I have coming back.
- 15:43Speaker 2: All right, before you go, Coach, Jim staying home tonight,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I'm staying home tonight, but Lance, Lance is considering driving
- 15:51Speaker 2: to Atlanta for Georgia Tech Colorado because he's never been
- 15:54Speaker 2: to Bobby Dodd Stadium.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Never been.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Never been. I believe you coached there with North Carolina,
- 15:58Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken. Is it worth the trip? Is
- 16:01Speaker 2: that a college stadium you're like, Lance, take an advantage
- 16:04Speaker 2: Thursday night, go to see Bobby Dodd?
- 16:07Speaker 3: Lance, I'm going to highly recommend it. I've played in
- 16:09Speaker 3: that stadium probably four times. We played in it when
- 16:11Speaker 3: I was at Auburn. It's different than most of the
- 16:28Speaker 3: SEC venues, just from size alone. But I would highly
- 16:34Speaker 3: recommend it. I would take the drive. I would go
- 16:36Speaker 3: over there. I'd embrace it. It's going to be a
- 16:38Speaker 3: great night. It's Colorado. They're going to have Dion. I mean,
- 16:42Speaker 3: it'll be a thing of beauty, and I would do it.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Well, it's going to be a fun weekend in Atlanta.
- 16:47Speaker 4: We've got Baylor and Auburn over there. Your former quarterback
- 16:50Speaker 4: is one of the captains in Cam Newton. When's the
- 16:52Speaker 4: last time you talked to Cam?
- 16:55Speaker 3: We– Texted back and forth right before they retired his jersey,
- 17:00Speaker 3: which was a few months ago. But we yeah, we
- 17:05Speaker 3: texted back and forth, me and him and his family
- 17:08Speaker 3: and mom and dad and everybody. But it's been a
- 17:10Speaker 3: while since I've actually spoke to him. He's he's got
- 17:13Speaker 3: a lot. He's got a lot of things going on,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and so do I. But, yeah, what a great opening
- 17:19Speaker 3: weekend for Auburn. This one ought to be fun, and
- 17:21Speaker 3: Cam will be right in the middle of it getting
- 17:23Speaker 3: them all going for sure.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I wish he'd gift you one of his hats. I'd
- 17:27Speaker 1: love to see you in one of Cam's hats. On
- 17:28Speaker 1: the SEC Network set.
- 17:31Speaker 3: You think I'd look okay on that game? Yeah, man.
- 17:33Speaker 1: You and Alyssa Lange, either one of you could pull
- 17:36Speaker 1: it off, I believe.
- 17:38Speaker 3: This Wednesday, me and Alyssa are on this upcoming Wednesday.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I might have to see if Cam can shoot me
- 17:42Speaker 3: one of those. And just for you guys, I'll put
- 17:45Speaker 3: it on there. And I'll take the heat for all
- 17:47Speaker 3: the laughs I get. But anyway, that's a good suggestion.
- 17:50Speaker 4: So is it even a question if I, because you
- 17:52Speaker 4: were on that staff with Vince Young winning that national
- 17:55Speaker 4: championship in 2005. If if I was like, you have
- 17:58Speaker 4: one of these quarterbacks in their prime in a big
- 18:01Speaker 4: college game, Vince Young or Cam Newton, I would assume
- 18:03Speaker 4: you would go, Cam, he won you a ring. I
- 18:05Speaker 4: guess both technically did, but is it pretty close?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Lance, that is a phenomenal question. Yes, it is very close.
- 18:13Speaker 3: It is very close. I'm going to tell you what,
- 18:15Speaker 3: those two guys are two of the most competitive human
- 18:19Speaker 3: beings I've ever been around in my life. And look,
- 18:24Speaker 3: There's there's guys that act like they want the ball
- 18:28Speaker 3: in their hand with the game on the line. These
- 18:30Speaker 3: dudes want to be the last one to touch the
- 18:33Speaker 3: ball to win or lose the game, period. That's how
- 18:37Speaker 3: competitive they are. They don't have it. They're pissed. And but,
- 18:43Speaker 3: you know, it's it's so close. What Vince did in
- 18:46Speaker 3: that game when I was a defensive coordinator at Texas
- 18:49Speaker 3: to take that game over. I've never seen anything like it.
- 18:53Speaker 3: But then I watched Cam take game after game after
- 18:56Speaker 3: game after game over. And you've got to remember, back
- 18:59Speaker 3: then in the Big 12, the competition wasn't like what
- 19:02Speaker 3: Cam had to go through in 2010. I mean, you
- 19:05Speaker 3: look at that schedule. You know, we won games by
- 19:08Speaker 3: three points, five points, kick a field goal, walk off.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I mean, all those things. Our games are all close.
- 19:13Speaker 3: And Cam was the reason. Look at the Alabama game
- 19:15Speaker 3: in Tuscaloosa. Cam was the reason we were able to
- 19:18Speaker 3: come back in those games. In the Big 12, they
- 19:21Speaker 3: were good, but guys, we're playing Colorado in the Big
- 19:23Speaker 3: 12 championship, and there's 10 minutes left in the third quarter,
- 19:26Speaker 3: and we're winning 70-3. Yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 2: It's a little different. In the championship game. In the
- 19:33Speaker 2: championship game. And Joel Klatt's looking through his ear hole. Yeah,
- 19:36Speaker 2: Joel Klatt doesn't even know which way he's up.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Coach, we appreciate the time. It is always good to
- 19:42Speaker 2: see you and catch up with you. And I know
- 19:43Speaker 2: you're excited like us that we kick it off for
- 19:45Speaker 2: real tonight. So enjoy it. And we look forward to
- 19:48Speaker 2: doing this again soon, hopefully.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Gentlemen, thank you for having me on. You guys have
- 19:53Speaker 3: a blessed day.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you too, Coach. Good to see you. Thank you.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That is Gene Chizik, former Auburn head coach, now on
- 19:58Speaker 2: the SEC Network. You'll see him all weekend long.
- 19:59Speaker 1: If you ever get a chance to hear him speak
- 20:01Speaker 1: at a banquet or something, he's really good. And he
- 20:04Speaker 1: tells a funny story. The only way they got Cam is–
- 20:09Speaker 1: He sent one.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Of his coaches. Cecil, right?
- 20:11Speaker 1: No, he sent one of his coaches to Blinn Junior
- 20:14Speaker 1: College to recruit a receiver. They needed a receiver. And
- 20:18Speaker 1: they came back, and they're like, the receiver's a no-go,
- 20:20Speaker 1: but I think we would want the quarterback. And they
- 20:23Speaker 1: looked at the numbers, and he was like, I know
- 20:26Speaker 1: he's at Florida, but I don't think I want the quarterback. Well,
- 20:29Speaker 1: he's driving back to Atlanta. Let's get him on campus
- 20:31Speaker 1: for a visit. And Chizik tells the story. He's like, OK,
- 20:35Speaker 1: he can come by, stop by the office, but make
- 20:38Speaker 1: sure he knows we're not offering him. We're not offering him.
- 20:42Speaker 1: And he says the coach walks in with Cam and
- 20:45Speaker 1: he stands up. And after he stands up, he's still
- 20:47Speaker 1: looking up at Cam and he's like. Hey, Cam, nice
- 20:50Speaker 1: to meet you. I'm Gene Chizzi. I want to offer
- 20:52Speaker 1: you a scholarship.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You're offered.
- 20:54Speaker 4: You're offered.
- 20:56Speaker 2: And you run a 4.5? That's funny because that's twice
- 20:59Speaker 2: that happened to Auburn. If you remember the way they
- 21:01Speaker 2: got Rudy Johnson, was it Daniel Cobb? They were there
- 21:04Speaker 2: looking at a quarterback. A quarterback at Auburn. God, I
- 21:08Speaker 2: cannot remember the name of the team. It was in Kansas. Hutchinson.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Hutchinson may be in Kansas. But they're there looking at
- 21:13Speaker 2: the quarterback, and somebody's like, what Rudy Johnson kid? He
- 21:16Speaker 2: runs up and down the field.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It was one of those bye weekends, I think, and
- 21:19Speaker 1: he was sending all the guys out, and somebody was
- 21:21Speaker 1: out at junior college at Blinn, and the guy's like,
- 21:23Speaker 1: that receiver, no, he's not.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Going to be there. But that quarterback's pretty good.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And he's like, make sure he knows it's not an offer.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It's not an offer. I will always say this about
- 21:31Speaker 2: Urban Meyer. It is crazy that he had it set
- 21:34Speaker 2: up to go from Tim Tebow to Cam Newton. Think
- 21:36Speaker 2: about that. If it had worked out for Urban Meyer
- 21:38Speaker 2: to go from Tim Tebow to Cam Newton, I cannot
- 21:42Speaker 2: think of a better quarterback succession in the history of
- 21:44Speaker 2: college football. Not even close. If you had those two.
- 21:46Speaker 1: You go look at that documentary on the Gators during
- 21:49Speaker 1: Urban Meyer and the Tebow years, how it ends. And
- 21:53Speaker 1: he talks openly, Urban does, about 2006. We won the
- 21:57Speaker 1: national championship. And he said afterwards, he's like, at that point,
- 22:00Speaker 1: I said to myself, man, that's it. Anything else is
- 22:03Speaker 1: gravy now. And he got into preparing for the next year,
- 22:07Speaker 1: and he realized, oh, no, it's just the opposite now.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Nothing else is gravy. That's the expectation now.
- 22:13Speaker 3: That's right.
- 22:13Speaker 1: We've got to win it every time now. And he's
- 22:16Speaker 1: just like Saban when Saban won it in 2009. We
- 22:18Speaker 1: won it in 2008, and I'm not even celebrating. I'm
- 22:21Speaker 1: in the locker room texting and calling recruits, and I'm
- 22:24Speaker 1: already working, and I'm having zero fun, and everybody's celebrating.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And then he talked about the devastation of losing Alabama
- 22:30Speaker 1: in 2009 and how he mentally had a mental breakdown.
- 22:34Speaker 1: You know, not mental, but a physical breakdown after that.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And that's how he ended up leaving Florida.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Headaches.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I think he said mixing alcohol and Ambien.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Ambien.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That's what it is.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Wake up in a bush.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Get you in a hurry there. Fascinating stories in college
- 22:51Speaker 1: football over the years. And hopefully we're starting the journey
- 22:54Speaker 1: in some other positive and entertaining ones this year, tonight,
- 22:58Speaker 1: with the games on the field that are, Being brought
- 23:01Speaker 1: to you by our friends at Hard Rock Bet. You
- 23:03Speaker 1: can get that sports app and enjoy all those tonight.

- 23:17Speaker 1: get $ 100 in bonus bets. Hardrock.bet backslash Clay. Hardrock.bet backslash Clay.
- 23:26Speaker 1: We'll talk to Clay Travis coming up around 1045. When
- 23:30Speaker 1: we come back, we'll look at some NFL news and
- 23:34Speaker 1: make some projection on a couple of more divisions and
- 23:37Speaker 1: more college football. All right here on the next round
- 23:39Speaker 1: presented by Hardrock Bets on Sporting State. Before Brown tells
- 23:43Speaker 1: us about XXXY. From the folks at Inside Carolina, on
- 23:49Speaker 1: three-side up there, North Carolina's basketball NIL, over $ 20 million
- 23:57Speaker 1: plus for their basketball roster. Now, you're talking about 11,
- 24:01Speaker 1: 12 players. Really, only seven or eight that play.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, $ 20 million is pretty significant, it sounds like. I mean,
- 24:08Speaker 2: you split that. Just on average over your seven best players,
- 24:12Speaker 2: and you're right at 3 million, just short of 3 million.
- 24:15Speaker 1: When Ohio State won the national championship in football, we
- 24:18Speaker 1: were going crazy about the $ 30 million roster in football.
- 24:22Speaker 1: And now it says 20 million plus for North Carolina basketball.
- 24:26Speaker 1: DeBonson was 5 million to BYU, right? Wasn't that the report? Yeah,
- 24:29Speaker 1: that was the report.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah, or six. Yeah, five or six. And then Yaxel
- 24:33Speaker 2: Lindenberg hinted that his was– 10 million, I think he
- 24:36Speaker 2: hinted at, or eight to 10 million. Yeah, but that,
- 24:40Speaker 2: you know.
- 24:40Speaker 4: The direction we're heading, can you see in back-to-college football,
- 24:46Speaker 4: a guy that instead of going in the draft as
- 24:48Speaker 4: a junior, university comes out, hey, we'll give you $ 10
- 24:52Speaker 4: million to stay an extra year.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, did that happen with Dante Moore at Oregon?
- 24:57Speaker 1: I mean, he was going to be a first-round draft pick.
- 24:59Speaker 2: It had to be something.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we've talked about it. You know, there was,
- 25:03Speaker 4: I still think Mendoza goes number one overall, but there
- 25:05Speaker 4: was conversation that Vegas maybe would have taken Dante Moore
- 25:08Speaker 4: number one overall. I don't know how, if that's the fact,
- 25:11Speaker 4: I don't know how you turn that money down.
- 25:13Speaker 1: By the way, Fernando Mendoza, yesterday the Raiders made Kirk
- 25:17Speaker 1: Cousins the starter. Fernando Mendoza becomes the first quarterback taken
- 25:23Speaker 1: number one overall, not to start week one since Baker
- 25:26Speaker 1: Mayfield with Cleveland.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I mean, I, So what is that? So that was 16, 17?
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yep.
- 25:33Speaker 4: So basically a decade.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Cam Ward, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow,
- 25:43Speaker 1: Kyler Murray.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Outside of Kyler, all those quarterbacks are pretty good. I
- 25:48Speaker 4: think Kyler's going to be better this year.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I was prepared to say, hey, good news for him.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I'd take Baker Mayfield's career, but now she listed those guys.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Probably would take Caleb Williams' eventual career over Baker. Certainly
- 25:58Speaker 2: would Joe Burrows. Bryce Young, to be determined.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence hasn't been.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence still. Trevor was really good last year.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Really good last year. All right, tell us about XXXY Browning.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Jennifer Say, she was a former national champion gymnast, former
- 26:12Speaker 2: Levi's brand president. She walked away from a corporate job
- 26:15Speaker 2: rather than say something she simply did not believe in.
- 26:18Speaker 2: When she walked away, she started XXXY Athletics instead. In
- 26:22Speaker 2: their words, they want to empower female athletes and take
- 26:24Speaker 2: a stand for fair competition. They call it the T
- 26:27Speaker 2: that launched a movement. It is real athletic apparel, not
- 26:31Speaker 2: just a slogan on a shirt. They got performance tops, tanks,
- 26:34Speaker 2: sports bras, leggings, shorts, training sets, hoodies, hats, graphic tees,
- 26:39Speaker 2: men's and women's. They've got it all right there. Worn
- 26:42Speaker 2: by athletes who've actually put something on the line. New

- 26:59Speaker 2: Find Nashville Balls gear there, too. Clay Travis Future WNBA franchise.
- 27:03Speaker 2: You get it right there. XXXYathletics.com. That is XX-XYathletics.com.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Hey, while we're talking a little NFL here, we started
- 27:15Speaker 1: yesterday with the NFC South. Let's do the AFC North.
- 27:18Speaker 1: NFC North today. AFC North for you guys.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Pick.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Give me the basement first, and then tell me who
- 27:26Speaker 1: the winner is.
- 27:27Speaker 4: I think the basement is Cleveland based on quarterback situation
- 27:30Speaker 4: right now, whether it's Deshaun or Shador long-term. I think
- 27:34Speaker 4: the deck is stacked against Todd Munkin. You lose your
- 27:37Speaker 4: best player, the best player in the NFL. I think
- 27:39Speaker 4: Jared Verst is going to be really, really good in Cleveland,
- 27:41Speaker 4: but you lose Myles Garrett. I would start with Cleveland.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Pittsburgh's not getting any younger. it looks like they've passed
- 27:49Speaker 4: their window. Obviously with Aaron Rodgers, the defense is getting
- 27:52Speaker 4: a little bit older. So it's a two-team race for me.
- 27:55Speaker 4: It's either Baltimore or Cincinnati. I feel like Baltimore, much
- 28:00Speaker 4: more consistent, obviously franchise. Lamar Jackson, something to prove coming
- 28:05Speaker 4: off that down year last year with the injury. And
- 28:08Speaker 4: Joe Burrow, you never know if you're going to get
- 28:09Speaker 4: him for a full 17. So Baltimore is the favorite
- 28:12Speaker 4: in this division. Cincinnati, there's a huge expectation. Their win
- 28:15Speaker 4: total right now is 10.5. So a lot of people
- 28:18Speaker 4: believe that, you know, they're going to be double digits
- 28:20Speaker 4: and back to the postseason. But even though it's a
- 28:22Speaker 4: rookie head coach, the offense wasn't great last year. I'm
- 28:26Speaker 4: going to stick with Baltimore.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Cleveland in the basement for me. I am going to
- 28:29Speaker 2: go with the only team that returns both head coach
- 28:32Speaker 2: and starting quarterback, and that's Cincinnati. Remarkably in that division,
- 28:35Speaker 2: every team's either got a new starter or a new
- 28:37Speaker 2: head coach, or in Cleveland's case, technically both, because Deshaun
- 28:40Speaker 2: Watson hasn't started in so long.
- 28:42Speaker 6: Yep.
- 28:43Speaker 2: So I am going to take Cincinnati to win this division,
- 28:45Speaker 2: but Cleveland to finish in the basement.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Cincinnati's my pick as well. Open up with my Buccaneers,
- 28:50Speaker 1: by the way, with a home game for Cincinnati. Healthy
- 28:53Speaker 1: at the beginning of the year. They'll be a nasty
- 28:55Speaker 1: out on week one. Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland for me
- 28:59Speaker 1: as well.
- 29:00Speaker 4: I think Burrow has a big year. I mean, I
- 29:01Speaker 4: drafted him as my fantasy quarterback. Then I got an
- 29:04Speaker 4: email that I got a D on my draft. Like
- 29:06Speaker 4: everybody else in my league is getting like A's and B's.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Daniel Jeremiah gave you a D?
- 29:11Speaker 4: I'm like, damn, how did I get a D? I've
- 29:12Speaker 4: never done fantasy before, so I probably will suck at this.
- 29:15Speaker 1: No, I mean, D can end up being champions.
- 29:18Speaker 4: I go tight and heavy. Just like the Rams run
- 29:21Speaker 4: their offense.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Interesting, yeah.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Tied in heavy.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Yeah, that 13-person.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Are you able to?
- 29:25Speaker 2: 13-person, yeah. It's tied in.
- 29:27Speaker 4: So you start one. I didn't even realize the whole format.
- 29:30Speaker 4: We start two quarterbacks.
- 29:32Speaker 2: So you draft it without knowing the format.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Two receivers.
- 29:34Speaker 2: That's how you get a D.
- 29:36Speaker 4: One tied in, two flex, a kicker, and a defense.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 4: But what I'm going to do is I'm going to
- 29:42Speaker 4: start one tight end, and both tight ends are going
- 29:44Speaker 4: to be my flex guys.
- 29:45Speaker 1: So you're going to flex two tight ends. Tight end
- 29:48Speaker 1: score touchdowns is to your point.
- 29:49Speaker 2: In the red zone.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Yeah, Colston Loveland, Harold Fanning Jr., and Tyler Warren. I
- 29:54Speaker 4: love my tight ends.
- 29:55Speaker 1: It's unique that you're doing a traditional fantasy league.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. Never done one. You're not going to
- 30:01Speaker 2: be the guy, though, and it's my pet peeve. You're
- 30:03Speaker 2: not going to come in on Monday morning telling me
- 30:05Speaker 2: what you need on Monday night football.
- 30:06Speaker 4: No, I promise you I will not do that. I
- 30:07Speaker 4: will tell you, I'm going to group text with people
- 30:08Speaker 4: I don't know. There's only two guys in this league
- 30:10Speaker 4: that I know. It's numbers, area coach from all over
- 30:13Speaker 4: the country, and they're all dogging my ass out, not
- 30:16Speaker 4: even knowing me. because i was asking about the free
- 30:19Speaker 4: age or the uh the waiver wire and they're like
- 30:21Speaker 4: you can have max transitions with that draft your transactions
- 30:23Speaker 4: with that draft you just had.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Oh so they're like you're so bad we'll let you
- 30:26Speaker 2: do whatever you want oh wow there'll be a if
- 30:29Speaker 2: he wins this thing there'll be a victory lap i could.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Probably yeah yeah but he he could uh he could
- 30:34Speaker 1: upset him as well too because one thing that i've
- 30:37Speaker 1: learned with fantasy football uh draft day is important but
- 30:40Speaker 1: You can battle back from what is considered to be.
- 30:43Speaker 2: A bad draft.
- 30:43Speaker 4: I mean, and who really knows?
- 30:45Speaker 3: Nobody.
- 30:46Speaker 4: I mean, Joe Burrow, again, could end up being the
- 30:49Speaker 4: MVP this year.
- 30:49Speaker 2: He could be, yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 1: NFC North, really quick.
- 30:52Speaker 2: This is the most competitive division. It's a tough one.
- 30:54Speaker 1: For me, I'll start since I went last last time.
- 30:56Speaker 1: For me, it's the Lions. Then I'm going to go Bears, Packers, Vikings.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I'm worried about the Packers' health. I'm right out of
- 31:05Speaker 1: the gate. Josh Jacobs on the commissioner's list. Parsons not
- 31:08Speaker 1: available maybe week one. So I'm going to put the
- 31:12Speaker 1: Packers third, but anybody top to.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Bottom good in this division. I agree. The worst team
- 31:16Speaker 2: in this division is going to be a really good team,
- 31:19Speaker 2: I think. I think the biggest wild card in this division, Lance,
- 31:21Speaker 2: you've mentioned it a couple times, is what does Kyler
- 31:25Speaker 2: Murray look like in Kevin O'Connell's offense? Most quarterbacks look
- 31:28Speaker 2: great in that offense. Kyler Murray has not had a
- 31:31Speaker 2: great career by any stretch of the imagination. Is this
- 31:34Speaker 2: a reset for him? If so, Minnesota can certainly win this.
- 31:37Speaker 2: If I were taking my hard-earned Benjamins, to Hard Rock Bets,
- 31:42Speaker 2: I would go with the Chicago Bears to win this division.
- 31:46Speaker 2: And I would actually take the Packers to finish in
- 31:49Speaker 2: the basement of this division.
- 31:50Speaker 4: OK, so the Bears win the division by a game
- 31:52Speaker 4: and a half based on the tie the Packers had
- 31:54Speaker 4: last year. The Bears pulled a lot of games out
- 31:56Speaker 4: of their ass. Now, I do think they could be
- 31:58Speaker 4: better in year two under Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams,
- 32:02Speaker 4: this direction he's going in. And the record could actually
- 32:04Speaker 4: be worse because it's such a competitive division. I could
- 32:07Speaker 4: see them easily 10 and 7. There's a huge expectation
- 32:10Speaker 4: for Detroit And I believe Detroit is going to win
- 32:12Speaker 4: the North. I mean, that win total is 10.5 right now.
- 32:16Speaker 1: But Aiden Hutchinson staying healthy is, you know, he's not
- 32:19Speaker 1: Joe Burrow-like yet on the entry, but him being out
- 32:22Speaker 1: there for 16, 17 games is very important.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Yeah, the back end of their defense, because Hutchinson was out,
- 32:28Speaker 4: I think that really affected them. And so, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 4: they lost a lot of high-scoring games last year. I
- 32:33Speaker 4: do think Minnesota is going to be much improved, but
- 32:36Speaker 4: much improved could be a game. I mean, I think
- 32:37Speaker 4: there's a lot of 9-8, 10-7 in this division. So
- 32:41Speaker 4: it's hard to put somebody in the basement. I guess
- 32:43Speaker 4: I would go Minnesota, but I could see any of
- 32:46Speaker 4: these teams in the basement. But I do think Detroit
- 32:48Speaker 4: is going to ultimately win the NFC North again.
- 32:50Speaker 1: According to The Athletic, Minnesota, the ninth worst quarterback situation
- 32:55Speaker 1: in the NFL. Browns first, Jets, Cardinals, Dolphins, Falcons, fifth
- 33:01Speaker 1: worst quarterback room, Saints, Colts, Titans, Vikings, and Panthers second.
- 33:08Speaker 1: As the 10 worst quarterback rooms.
- 33:09Speaker 3: In the NFL.
- 33:09Speaker 4: But as you move up, I don't know if you
- 33:11Speaker 4: have the whole thing.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I don't.
- 33:12Speaker 1: They just do the 10 worst.
- 33:13Speaker 4: But, like, that's not bad. If you get to Bryce Young,
- 33:16Speaker 4: a guy that started a home playoff game last year,
- 33:18Speaker 4: almost won it. It wasn't Bryce's fault that they didn't
- 33:22Speaker 4: win that game. I just think all the quarterback rooms
- 33:25Speaker 4: in front of the bottom 10 are pretty damn good
- 33:27Speaker 4: quarterback rooms.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Cut 19, Tyler, if you can. By the way, yesterday, yesterday,
- 33:35Speaker 1: the 49ers and the Rams started flying.
- 33:39Speaker 2: To their home opener.
- 33:39Speaker 4: You mentioned Miami on that.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Miami was the fourth worst. So they're still in
- 33:44Speaker 2: the air? They started flying. You make it sound like
- 33:46Speaker 2: this is a long flight.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I mean, it's, what is it, 15, 17 hours?
- 33:50Speaker 4: From there, I think it's 15.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Okay, 15, 17 hours. I don't know if this changes
- 33:57Speaker 1: the way you play the game or not, but defensive
- 34:00Speaker 1: end Keon White of the 49ers got asked yesterday before
- 34:03Speaker 1: they went out to the airport, his plan is, For
- 34:07Speaker 1: the flight to Australia, this is from the Bay Area
- 34:09Speaker 1: sports leader, NBC Bay Area.
- 34:12Speaker 3: What's your plan for the flight to get rest and
- 34:15Speaker 3: not feel crappy when you're in Australia?
- 34:18Speaker 5: I'm about to take like, I don't know if you
- 34:21Speaker 5: can OD on melatonin, but I'm going to try. Take
- 34:24Speaker 5: like five melatonin, go to sleep on the plane. As
- 34:27Speaker 5: soon as I wake up, I'm taking five more and
- 34:30Speaker 5: just keep rolling like that.
- 34:32Speaker 2: All right, can you OD on melatonin? Yeah, I mean,
- 34:34Speaker 2: he's a melatonin 5, 5 more.
- 34:35Speaker 1: You're not supposed to take too much.
- 34:37Speaker 4: I mean, I would go heavy indica. I'd probably take
- 34:39Speaker 4: 20 milligrams.
- 34:40Speaker 2: You can't OD on that, right?
- 34:41Speaker 4: No, you cannot. You cannot? And drink some heavy, heavy cab,
- 34:45Speaker 4: and then just kind of doze off.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Yes, you can take too much melatonin, but an overdose
- 34:49Speaker 2: is rarely... Life-threatening for adults.
- 34:53Speaker 6: Rarely.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Rarely.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Well, I mean, hopefully he wakes up by the game.
- 34:57Speaker 2: When do they play? Next Thursday?
- 34:58Speaker 4: Next Thursday, a week from tonight.
- 34:59Speaker 2: A week from tonight.
- 35:00Speaker 4: And I am so nervous about that game. I'll go
- 35:02Speaker 4: on to tell you, I'm probably going to have... Wait
- 35:04Speaker 4: a minute, that's not the Wednesday game?
- 35:06Speaker 1: No, Wednesday is the game in.
- 35:08Speaker 4: Yeah, Seattle and New England.
- 35:10Speaker 1: New England-Seattle.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Why did I think the Australia game was the Thursday?
- 35:13Speaker 3: No.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Wednesday night starts the season. Thursday's the Australia game.
- 35:17Speaker 4: By the way, 11 of the next 12 days we
- 35:19Speaker 4: have football.
- 35:20Speaker 1: That's right, 11 of the next 12. But you also
- 35:23Speaker 1: fly over the international date line, right?
- 35:25Speaker 2: Don't confuse me. I think it's a Friday morning game.
- 35:28Speaker 2: It is in Australia.
- 35:29Speaker 3: In Australia.
- 35:29Speaker 2: In Melbourne. They had to play it Friday morning, so
- 35:31Speaker 2: it could be Friday night.
- 35:32Speaker 4: But it is a 735 kick right here on Netflix.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 4: But I think we forget all those.
- 35:37Speaker 2: You may sound like we're on Netflix right now. Right
- 35:39Speaker 2: here on Netflix.
- 35:40Speaker 4: All those injuries last year for Kyle Shanahan, they still
- 35:42Speaker 4: won 12 games. They still won a playoff game against
- 35:45Speaker 4: the Eagles. They still beat the Rams in SoFi. They
- 35:49Speaker 4: always beat the Rams in SoFi. Sans the 2021 playoffs.
- 35:53Speaker 4: NFC Championship game. I just think this is going to
- 35:55Speaker 4: be a battle. I think people are already giving the
- 35:57Speaker 4: Rams to Lombardi, and I could see them easily start 0-1.
- 36:00Speaker 4: And if you start 0-1 with the schedule coming up, damn.
- 36:05Speaker 1: NFL starts Wednesday, and then Wednesday, Thursday. Is there a
- 36:10Speaker 1: Friday game the opening week?
- 36:12Speaker 2: In the NFL, no. No, okay.
- 36:13Speaker 1: So Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday, Monday to get the NFL season
- 36:18Speaker 1: started next week. Today's a big day. Greg Sankey actually
- 36:21Speaker 1: in person in Baton Rouge in the NFL players' back-to-college
- 36:26Speaker 1: case in their temporary restraining order. I told you yesterday
- 36:30Speaker 1: I don't think this will be a big deal by
- 36:32Speaker 1: the time we get to the LSU kick on Saturday.
- 36:34Speaker 1: I think the SEC will have this buttoned up and
- 36:37Speaker 1: LSU put in their place. But Sankey in person today
- 36:40Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge. We'll talk about what's going on with
- 36:43Speaker 1: the court, what are some options for the NFL. We'll
- 36:46Speaker 1: also talk about.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Everything else going on in college football with Clay Travis.
- 36:52Speaker 1: He joins us on the other side. TNR presented by
- 36:55Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bets right here on Sporting State. I'm looking
- 36:58Speaker 1: at pictures outside the courthouse in Baton Rouge there. Pete
- 37:01Speaker 1: Thamel showing us the scene in Baton Rouge as the
- 37:03Speaker 1: LSU SEC showdown continues. Court hearing starts at the top
- 37:08Speaker 1: of the hour here. So coming up at 11 central
- 37:12Speaker 1: Baton Rouge time.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I did think it was interesting that the attorney general
- 37:16Speaker 2: of the state of Georgia said, wrote the open letter
- 37:18Speaker 2: to Greg Sankey. Chris Carr. Chris Carr, thank you. I
- 37:21Speaker 2: would not have pulled that one. Wrote the letter to
- 37:24Speaker 2: Greg Sankey, basically telling him, please admonish LSU if they
- 37:28Speaker 2: move forward with this. Suspend them or expel them. Suspend them,
- 37:31Speaker 2: expel them, whatever you have to do. Use your power
- 37:34Speaker 2: to punish LSU if they go through with this. I mean,
- 37:36Speaker 2: that's an attorney general of a state that has an
- 37:39Speaker 2: SEC team.
- 37:39Speaker 1: A lot like Big 12 vibes that was going on
- 37:41Speaker 1: around the source with the attorney generals getting involved. It'll
- 37:45Speaker 1: be interesting. By the way, no punishment on Cincinnati. The
- 37:48Speaker 1: Sorsby case was deemed by the NCAA a level three violation,
- 37:53Speaker 1: isolated and limited. So no punishment for Cincinnati. We'll talk
- 37:57Speaker 1: to Clay Travis about the courtroom in Baton Rouge and
- 37:59Speaker 1: all the on the field stuff after LT tells us
- 38:02Speaker 1: about Clay Travis Law, one of the great sponsors here
- 38:05Speaker 1: on the next round.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, look, bad things happen. I mean, it's just
- 38:12Speaker 4: one of those things they just do.
- 38:13Speaker 2: It's the universe, man.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Accidents, they never wait for a good time. One bad moment,
- 38:18Speaker 4: a wreck, a fall, a doctor who wasn't paying attention,
- 38:21Speaker 4: and suddenly you're fighting an insurance company that does this
- 38:24Speaker 4: every single day. That's why Clay started Clay Travis Law.
- 38:27Speaker 4: He built a firm around one idea. People deserve someone
- 38:29Speaker 4: willing to pay attention, ask the hard questions, and push
- 38:32Speaker 4: back when things don't add up. experienced trial attorneys who
- 38:35Speaker 4: bring the fight to corporations and insurers based in Nashville,
- 38:38Speaker 4: trusted across the country.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Here's what they promise.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Honesty. They don't sugarcoat your case. You'll hear what it's
- 38:45Speaker 4: actually worth, not what you want to hear. The case
- 38:47Speaker 4: evaluation is free. No charge, no pressure, no hassle. Just
- 38:50Speaker 4: tell them your story. Go to ClayTravisLaw.com.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Call 877-222-4444.
- 38:53Speaker 4: That is ClayTravisLaw.com. No case is too big or too small.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Hey, look who's here. It's Clay Travis of Clay Travis Law.
- 39:04Speaker 2: What timing. What is up, Clay? How are you? I object.
- 39:08Speaker 6: I am sending out my story on the LSU versus
- 39:12Speaker 6: SEC drama legitimately as we speak.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Let me make sure I don't have any typos.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Okay, sportandstate.com is where you will find that. Sportandstate.com where
- 39:22Speaker 2: you find our show. Um, that's right.
- 39:24Speaker 6: Um, so I just hit, um, just hit it, uh, send, uh,
- 39:30Speaker 6: so it's up, I believe on the main page at
- 39:32Speaker 6: sport and state.com. So fire away. I imagine that is, uh,
- 39:36Speaker 6: I know it's crazy. that we have college football week
- 39:40Speaker 6: one here and we all wait for the offseason with
- 39:43Speaker 6: bated breath to see what's going to happen with our
- 39:45Speaker 6: favorite teams and, frankly, our favorite sport. And then the
- 39:49Speaker 6: biggest story on Thursday by far, I think, honestly, is
- 39:54Speaker 6: Greg Sankey is potentially going to be in a witness
- 39:56Speaker 6: chair and being cross-examined by LSU attorneys to try to
- 40:01Speaker 6: get players eligible for the biggest game, I think it's
- 40:05Speaker 6: fair to say, of the weekend. uh, LSU hosting Clemson
- 40:10Speaker 6: death battle of death valleys. Um, you know, I, I just, I,
- 40:15Speaker 6: there's so many angles here, uh, that I'm utterly fascinated.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 40:19Speaker 1: And doesn't it feel like though that the sec has
- 40:21Speaker 1: already won this? Do you think, do you think LSU
- 40:23Speaker 1: and the people that want to play NFL players have
- 40:26Speaker 1: a fighting chance or is, or is this thing already over?
- 40:29Speaker 6: Well, unless there's something that's happened in the last hour
- 40:33Speaker 6: i mean the guys are eligible right now.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Oh i know it just doesn't feel like that's going
- 40:37Speaker 1: to be the way the case ends it feels like
- 40:39Speaker 1: yeah i would be surprised if these guys play it
- 40:41Speaker 1: just doesn't seem like it's going to happen.
- 40:43Speaker 2: But this is a louisiana judge that's up for re-election
- 40:46Speaker 2: we know how this hearing's going today don't we i.
- 40:49Speaker 6: Look i mean so here is where i will dive
- 40:52Speaker 6: in i will be dispassionate lawyer clay giving both sides
- 40:56Speaker 6: of the argument, and then you can ask me what
- 40:58Speaker 6: I personally think. Let's start with LSU. Pretend that I
- 41:02Speaker 6: am representing LSU. You have a player that is told
- 41:06Speaker 6: by the NCAA that he does not have the ability
- 41:08Speaker 6: to play for a fifth year. We're just going to
- 41:10Speaker 6: use Daquan Wright, even though there are many players that
- 41:13Speaker 6: are involved, 15, 16, whatever the math is, in this
- 41:17Speaker 6: particular lawsuit. Let's just use Daquan Wright because it's easier
- 41:20Speaker 6: sometimes to focus on an individual. You finish your senior
- 41:24Speaker 6: year at Ole Miss. You have a pretty good year,
- 41:27Speaker 6: five touchdowns. I think it was around 600 yards receiving,
- 41:29Speaker 6: 39 catches-ish. I think I got that math relatively correct.
- 41:35Speaker 6: You do not believe that you're going to be given
- 41:37Speaker 6: an extra year to play college football. So you decide,
- 41:42Speaker 6: perhaps not as your chosen choice, to make yourself eligible
- 41:46Speaker 6: for the NFL draft. You aren't drafted. You go into
- 41:48Speaker 6: NFL training camps. It's clear that you don't have what
- 41:52Speaker 6: it takes to make at least the Cleveland Browns. A
- 41:55Speaker 6: judge then comes out with a ruling after all this
- 41:58Speaker 6: has taken place and says, actually, you were eligible. The
- 42:02Speaker 6: NCAA got it wrong. LSU offers you probably several hundred
- 42:06Speaker 6: thousand dollars to come back to college football to play
- 42:09Speaker 6: for your old coach, Lane Kiffin, on a team that
- 42:12Speaker 6: could contend for a national championship. You otherwise are not
- 42:16Speaker 6: going to make very much money playing football, probably. Would
- 42:20Speaker 6: you take the several hundred thousand dollars? The courts say
- 42:23Speaker 6: you are eligible, notwithstanding your particularly circuitous path back to
- 42:28Speaker 6: college athletics. And so that is the LSU argument. The
- 42:32Speaker 6: NCAA has said he's eligible. How does the SEC now
- 42:36Speaker 6: invalidate NCAA rules when the SEC is subject to NCAA guidance?
- 42:42Speaker 6: this guy is eligible right now. We don't believe that
- 42:46Speaker 6: you should basically strip away his eligibility citing SEC rules. Judge,
- 42:53Speaker 6: I forgot his last name, but Baton Rouge area judge,
- 42:57Speaker 6: that is the LSU argument. SEC argument is more existential,
- 43:00Speaker 6: I would say.
- 43:01Speaker 2: It is this.
- 43:03Speaker 6: If you permit a players to leave college, pursue NFL riches,
- 43:09Speaker 6: go through NFL training camp, NFL preseason games, If they
- 43:13Speaker 6: don't make the team, then you come back. Why would
- 43:17Speaker 6: every junior in college football not declare for the NFL
- 43:22Speaker 6: knowing that if you make the team, boom, you're going
- 43:24Speaker 6: to make a lot of money? If you don't, you
- 43:27Speaker 6: come back to college football and you make a lot
- 43:29Speaker 6: of money there instead. In other words, there is no
- 43:33Speaker 6: distinction between college and pro anymore. Effectively, we are then
- 43:37Speaker 6: saying that the NFL and college football are competing with
- 43:41Speaker 6: players directly. and that you can go from one to
- 43:45Speaker 6: the other without any hindrance or restriction. If this Daquan
- 43:49Speaker 6: Wright example follows through, then many other players will follow
- 43:54Speaker 6: as well. The exception then makes the rule, and you
- 43:58Speaker 6: end up in a situation where basically college football as
- 44:02Speaker 6: we know it no longer exists. And by the way,
- 44:05Speaker 6: this ruling would also apply to college basketball. Now, I
- 44:09Speaker 6: might also point out, as you guys well remember, but
- 44:12Speaker 6: others might not, we've already seen this in basketball with
- 44:15Speaker 6: Charles Bediako.
