Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. Happy for ride Day.
- 0:23We have a Friday Mini Scroll for you guys.
- 0:25This is random, OK, Like mini scroll on Fridays, anything
- 0:29goes. So bear with me.
- 0:30Let's just get into the stories for today.
- 0:32So the first story that I have for you guys is I need to talk
- 0:36about the Celebrity cruise. So many of you guys said yes,
- 0:39please talk about this cruise. I haven't even heard about it.
- 0:41OK, so tons of A Listers were on basically this like giant branch
- 0:46trip for Ritz Carlton's new super yacht this week.
- 0:50There were 450 guests and they left from Rome and it was two
- 0:54nights. The guests included Kendall
- 0:56Jenner, Sting, Orlando Bloom, Martha Stewart, Alex Earl, Ellie
- 1:00Goulding, Ricky Martin, Janelle Monáe, Naomi Campbell, Nina
- 1:04Dobrev, Sofia Vergara, Ashley Graham, Kygo, Tom Brady, and
- 1:09more. OK, so this cruise popped off on
- 1:13social media obviously, and I know it said it was like a brand
- 1:16trip, but basically it was like APR preview I guess.
- 1:19So the Ritz Carlton only has three of these.
- 1:22I think this is the third of like their super yachts that
- 1:24they have and its first paid cruise on this specific yacht
- 1:28set sail on July 3rd. So literally they did 2 days of
- 1:32VIP's PR preview and then it set sail with their paid guests.
- 1:37There wasn't really any drama. I feel like I kind of hyped it
- 1:40up or like made it sound like there was drama.
- 1:42There wasn't really any drama. People just liked following
- 1:44along. However, one thing did happen
- 1:48and that was that Alex Earl lost part of her veneer on the
- 1:51cruise. So she posted videos explaining
- 1:54that a piece of her veneer on her very front tooth cracked off
- 1:58during dinner on the first night.
- 2:00And then she posted a video the second day, like trying to use a
- 2:03nail file to shave it down so it wasn't so spiky and like looked
- 2:07a little bit better for night 2. She also said she regrets
- 2:11getting veneers out of like all of the work she's had done.
- 2:14That's the one thing she regrets the most.
- 2:16Also, the memes to come out of it is that Martha Stewart, she
- 2:19took pictures with literally everyone.
- 2:21Everyone was like she was the and Dom of like this cruise and
- 2:25she was just in every photo. Everybody wanted pictures with
- 2:28her. She was doing the most as usual.
- 2:30That is very Martha Stewart. The next word that I have for
- 2:33you guys is that YouTube is to crack down on quote UN quote
- 2:36unoriginal content. This is a little bit like mini
- 2:40tech coded, but you know, like I said, mini scroll on Fridays,
- 2:44anything goes. So YouTube has announced a new
- 2:47plan to crack down on AI generated content from accounts
- 2:50that are monetized. Now this is a huge problem,
- 2:54especially in like the video essay explainer space.
- 2:57I don't know about you guys, but I watch YouTube every single
- 2:59night and almost every single like deep dive or exploratory
- 3:03video that I click on from my recommended page.
- 3:06If it's not like someone that I subscribe to already, it's a
- 3:08random video that's recommended to me.
- 3:09I'll be like, Oh my God, this looks interesting.
- 3:11I'll watch it. It's almost always now and AI
- 3:15generated voice or the graphics and the video you can tell is
- 3:19all done by AI. So from July 15th, the platform
- 3:22will be updating its guidelines to be stricter with what it
- 3:25considers original content that is available to monetize Quote
- 3:30In order to monetize as part of the YouTube Partner Program,
- 3:33YouTube has always required creators to upload original and
- 3:36authentic content, the platform said in a new statement on July
- 3:4015, 2025. YouTube is updating guidelines
- 3:44to better identify mass produced and repetitious content.
- 3:48This update better reflects what inauthentic content looks like
- 3:51today. Now, I don't think this
- 3:53necessarily means those like AI voiced videos or the videos that
- 3:58are, you know, like AI graphics. Like I don't necessarily think
- 4:01it's going to crack down on that type of content.
- 4:03I think it's more about the channels itself and if a channel
- 4:07is bringing something like educational or entertaining to
- 4:09the platform rather than just like AI generated brain rot for
- 4:13views. On one hand, I'm like, yeah,
- 4:15this makes total sense and I like this strategy, strategy.
- 4:18And on the other hand, I'm like, is this just YouTube trying to
- 4:23save some money on its Adsense? You know, like, do I think that
- 4:26those videos should be monetized and rewarded like that?
- 4:30I don't know. But I do think it's an
- 4:31opportunity for YouTube to basically save some money in its
- 4:34ad revenue program. Because also there's tons, I
- 4:38mean, this is anecdotal evidence, but tons of anecdotal
- 4:40evidence out there from creators who say my video has been
- 4:44demonetized or like, I don't have monetization turned on on
- 4:46this video or whatever. And they say like, but ads still
- 4:50appear on my video. So another part of me is like,
- 4:53OK, so YouTube's going to save money from, you know, not having
- 4:56to monetize these videos that they can say don't seem to be
- 5:00like educational or entertaining.
- 5:02And they're just kind of like brain rot.
- 5:04But are they still going to show ads and just keep all the
- 5:07Adsense? Because that's apparently
- 5:08sometimes allegedly what they do on demonetized videos anyways.
- 5:13OK, the last story that I have for you guys, there is some
- 5:16bridal drama happening on Australian TikTok right now.
- 5:19And I feel like there's just always bridal drama.
- 5:22But honestly bridal content when it's like specifically calling
- 5:26out pops the fuck off. And I'm going to actually talk
- 5:29about my theories as to why, but here's the story.
- 5:31So a creator named Jade posted a video earlier this week sobbing,
- 5:35calling out a pretty reputable and high end bridal shop in
- 5:38Sydney and Paddington called the Ivory Room.
- 5:41So Paddington is the suburb in Sydney where it is.
- 5:44Jade said that she spent $15,000 on a wedding dress.
- 5:47She's 4 weeks out from her wedding, the dress is way too
- 5:50big, especially around the top and she was told that the
- 5:52alterations to take it in would cost her around $4000 and that
- 5:56because of like the beating and just the way that the dress is
- 5:59structured at the top, altering it could impact the integrity of
- 6:02the dress. Jade's point of her original
- 6:04video was basically that it's predatory for bridal shops to do
- 6:08this with like charging for alterations and not guaranteeing
- 6:11the integrity of the dress will stay in place with these
- 6:13expensive alterations, especially when they know that
- 6:16brides are so close to their wedding day so they don't really
- 6:18have another option. This video blew up.
- 6:22People went nuts for this video to the point where other women
- 6:27who have done like try on hauls or vlogs going to this specific
- 6:32bridal shop in Sydney and trying on dresses on TikTok literally
- 6:36over the years, OK. Like some of these videos are
- 6:38like years old. There are people going from
- 6:40Jade's video and they're going into these other people's like
- 6:43random people's like vlogs and stuff of them trying on wedding
- 6:46dresses and telling them to like delete this video saying like
- 6:49it's disgusting that they would keep this video up.
- 6:52Justice for Jade. It's so obvious that this random
- 6:56creator doing a try on haul at the ivory room like 3 years ago
- 6:59is being paid off by the ivory room to deflect from all the
- 7:03drama with Jade. Like it is wild.
- 7:06It is so wild the conclusions that people are jumping to and
- 7:08the fact that they're like telling these random people
- 7:11these random, like some of them are not even like creators.
- 7:13They're just like regular people that posted a vlog trying on
- 7:16wedding dresses when they were getting married.
- 7:17Like telling them to delete these videos and stuff because
- 7:20they had a positive experience at this bridal shop. 1 creator
- 7:23Alex Loney made a video actually talking about this.
- 7:26So she vlogged herself trying on dresses at the Ivory Room in
- 7:29February 2024. And now her comments on that
- 7:32vlog are filled with people calling her a paid plant for the
- 7:36bridal shop and telling her, like I said, it's disgusting
- 7:38that she would something positive about the shop amid the
- 7:42Jade situation, telling her to delete the video.
- 7:44It's wild. And she was like, I didn't even
- 7:46buy my dress from there, but I had a positive experience there.
- 7:49This vlog is literally like 18 months old.
- 7:51Leave me alone. So I'll get into why I think
- 7:54this happens in a minute. But to tie it all up, the owner
- 7:57of the Ivory Room responded Jay. Came and did her pick up and she
- 8:00was happy with the dress. We popped her in it, we took
- 8:03photos of her in it. We remeasured her bust, waist
- 8:06and hip again which showed a significant size reduction but
- 8:11she signed off saying she was happy with the dress, took the
- 8:14dress and it wasn't for another 4 weeks until we heard from her
- 8:18for the very first time that there was any concerns with the
- 8:20gown. We have been responding to her
- 8:23in regards to this and our first point of contact was of course
- 8:26to speak to the designers and we raised this query with them and
- 8:30they assured us that the dress was ordered as per size on order
- 8:34in November 2024. We then look through our own QC
- 8:37records again just to recheck to make sure we absolutely knew
- 8:40what we were saying was correct and we can see that yes, the
- 8:43dress arrived correct as ordered to the order in November 2024.
- 8:49We then had a look at her pickup form which had her photos from
- 8:52pickup and measurements from pickup, which we can see quite a
- 8:55significant measurement fluctuation.
- 8:59We then relate all this information to Jade and just let
- 9:02her know that unfortunately the dress has come as per order and
- 9:06that fluctuations in measurements are not a designer
- 9:09fault or an ivory room fault. It is something that the bride
- 9:12will just need to, you know, work through with her
- 9:15alterations. This is standard and expected
- 9:18and we've offered to assist her through the process.
- 9:21If she needs any help with the alterations, we've offered to
- 9:25give her other alterations to be able to go to if she wants a
- 9:28second opinion with that and we're just really looking to
- 9:32support her in what is a really anxious and nervous time.
- 9:36It should be really exciting. I think in general, what
- 9:39possibly has happened here is that there's not so OK, look,
- 9:42I'm married and when I was trying on wedding dresses, I
- 9:45actually got married in a jumpsuit from Revolve.
- 9:47But when I was actually trying on like real wedding dresses,
- 9:50you know, like it was very, it was made very clear to me that
- 9:53the bride pays for alterations, that there are some dresses that
- 9:57are designed so intricately and built in such a way that if you
- 10:00do get mass alterations, it will impact the dress and they would
- 10:04tell you like approximately to alter it.
- 10:05It will cost like this much. So I feel like there is a lot of
- 10:08miscommunication that happened. I think Jade was not expecting
- 10:11this, which is like a problem, like that's a problem that she
- 10:14was not expecting to have to pay so much money for these
- 10:17alterations and that the wedding dress she chose to be altered,
- 10:21it would possibly impact the integrity of the dress.
- 10:24That being said, now all the content regarding this has been
- 10:27deleted by Jade and the bridal shop and Jade posted saying that
- 10:32they agreed to talk about this in person and to archive all the
- 10:35content. OK.
- 10:36So I feel like this story is representative of a larger trend
- 10:39that we're seeing online around like call out culture in
- 10:42general. Like nothing will get you more
- 10:44support and more engagement than a video.
- 10:47So calling someone out for wronging you.
- 10:50And I actually just did one of these on my TikTok literally
- 10:53like 3 days ago and it's popping the fuck off.
- 10:55I talked about like a kind of a sexist experience that I had at
- 10:58a founders lunch and it wasn't even like that shocking, you
- 11:02know, of a video or like that shocking of a story.
- 11:05But it is going absolutely insane.
- 11:07And the algorithm obviously rewards like call out content,
- 11:10but it does like it tickles something inside of us.
- 11:12I think we like a villain moment.
- 11:15Like we like when things feel kind of black and white, right?
- 11:18Like, oh, you are right and you are wrong.
- 11:19And I think it makes sense to us.
- 11:21So I think this also works particularly well when brides do
- 11:25this, when they do like call out videos.
- 11:27First of all, weddings are so expensive and we all know that.
- 11:29So the emotional investment that like we have in the story
- 11:33already is so much higher than if you were like, oh, I went to
- 11:36some restaurant and I had a really shitty experience with
- 11:39the waitress and like the meal was trash or whatever.
- 11:41And you're like, OK, well, that was probably like a $30
- 11:44experience. You just feel like, OK, you were
- 11:46wronged. But like, at at what cost?
- 11:48Like, you know, like were the stakes that high for bridal
- 11:51stuff? Like, yes, usually it is quite
- 11:53high. But also it's like the one day
- 11:56that women are conditioned to believe is like the most
- 11:59important day of our lives. It's the day you get to be a
- 12:01Princess. You get to call all the shots.
- 12:03You get to be a bridezilla if you want to.
- 12:05Like, you basically get to do and say and be whatever and
- 12:09whoever you want. So I feel like for a lot of us,
- 12:13it might be subconscious that we inherently side with the bride
- 12:18in these scenarios because it feels so black and white to us.
- 12:21Like anything that stands in the way of a bride getting exactly
- 12:25what she wants on her wedding day, like it's the most special
- 12:28day of her life, we're told, you know, like, that is
- 12:31automatically wrong. And I'm not saying that was the
- 12:34case in this situation. I'm just kind of musing on why
- 12:36wedding specific call out content go so viral and kind of
- 12:39elicits such like a cohesive reaction from the Internet.
- 12:43And I do think we like to have an outlet, right?
- 12:44Like, we like a villain. We like to project our anger or
- 12:47whatever out onto someone, which is why general call out culture
- 12:51works so well. And of course, there is the
- 12:53element of, you know, you don't want to support a business that
- 12:56is doing wrong by its customers or whatever.
- 12:59So like there's of course that element of it too.
- 13:02But I think we're at this very interesting point in like call
- 13:05out content and what it does for us, like personally,
- 13:11collectively, emotionally, like why we're so obsessed with it.
- 13:16It's like the easiest type of content to truly like take off.
- 13:20Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 13:22Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 13:24Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 13:27Oh, there will be no mini on Monday because Oh my God, you
- 13:30guys are going to die for like the housewives fans on Monday.
- 13:34I am doing an IRL interview for the pod.
- 13:37I know we have some Bravo lovers.
- 13:38I know we have some that do not love Bravo, but I love Bravo.
- 13:41It's like my number one passion. OK, I'm doing an IRL interview
- 13:45with Whitney Rose, my queen of already done that.
- 13:47I did that last year and she was so much fun, like literally so
- 13:50much fun. And Teresa Judice, I get to meet
- 13:55Teresa in the flesh. An icon.
- 13:57No matter how you feel about Teresa, you cannot deny she is a
- 14:00Bravo Housewives icon. I'm gonna die anyways.
- 14:05So I have that on Monday. So I'm gonna focus on that, and
- 14:08then I will let you guys know how it all went on Tuesday.
- 14:11OK, bye.
