- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bear Smokehouse Barbecue at Hartford. Is the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show here on lear Field. Great to have
- 0:05Speaker 1: you with us, Bob Joyce, with Mike Cavanugh, Adam Jardino. Well,
- 0:09Speaker 1: we were going to save this for the second segment,
- 0:11Speaker 1: of course. There was a little incident that happened in
- 0:13Speaker 1: over time with about what a minute and a half
- 0:15Speaker 1: to go.
- 0:15Speaker 2: If that.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Minute, men had just come down the ice with a
- 0:19Speaker 1: chance to score kai Jian varias coming out of the
- 0:21Speaker 1: zone up the left side, and the lights start flickering
- 0:23Speaker 1: and then the lights go out as if you mass
- 0:25Speaker 1: had won the game. It was a big celebration and
- 0:27Speaker 1: suddenly play stopped. Should that be a penalty like a
- 0:31Speaker 1: delay of game type thing if you're throw like throwing
- 0:32Speaker 1: pucks on the ice and stuff like that. I mean,
- 0:34Speaker 1: it's you know, the closest thing I can think of
- 0:36Speaker 1: in hockey is when the power went out in Boston
- 0:38Speaker 1: for Game four of the eighty eight Stanley Cup Finals.
- 0:40Speaker 1: But the only difference was the lights ever came back
- 0:42Speaker 1: on for that game.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, the power went out. The power didn't go out there.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Someone shut the lights off. And I'm not saying it
- 0:50Speaker 3: was done purposely. It was probably an accident. What it
- 0:54Speaker 3: appeared like to me was they put the strobe lights
- 0:56Speaker 3: on thinking that you mass scored. I don't know why,
- 1:00Speaker 3: because it wasn't even close to going in and then
- 1:04Speaker 3: maybe someone panicked and you know, shot it off, hit
- 1:09Speaker 3: another button. I don't know. You know, it is what
- 1:15Speaker 3: it is. I'm not going to get too torn up
- 1:18Speaker 3: about it. It's just there's nothing you can do about
- 1:23Speaker 3: There's no rule in the book for you know, a
- 1:25Speaker 3: penalty for that. There is if you throw stuff on
- 1:28Speaker 3: the ice because of the fans, get warned, and if
- 1:30Speaker 3: it gets done again, then you're going to you know,
- 1:32Speaker 3: you get a delay of the game penalty.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But did you get a sense that the officials when
- 1:36Speaker 2: they huddled up after that, were they trying to figure out, Hey,
- 1:39Speaker 2: can is there anything to be done besides just redoing
- 1:41Speaker 2: just do a face?
- 1:42Speaker 3: No, I think they were. My take with the officials
- 1:46Speaker 3: was I just think they were confused. They had to
- 1:51Speaker 3: blow the whistle, the lights are out, you know, it's
- 1:53Speaker 3: a dangerous situation. And afterwards, you know, they came up
- 1:57Speaker 3: to me and they said they were very disappointed that
- 2:01Speaker 3: it happened, and they were going to report it, and
- 2:04Speaker 3: quite honestly, I wasn't even thinking about it when it happened.
- 2:07Speaker 3: At first I was, I said, what happened? Like why
- 2:10Speaker 3: did the lights go out? And then my mind just
- 2:12Speaker 3: shifted immediately to all right, there's a minute in forty
- 2:15Speaker 3: seven seconds left. We still we got to.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Figure out offensive zone face off?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, offensive zone face off? Who do we want out there?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Like those types of things I wasn't thinking about. We
- 2:24Speaker 3: just got screwed. Yeah, yeah, that wasn't That was the
- 2:27Speaker 3: last thing on my mind. That was still a minute
- 2:29Speaker 3: in forty seven seconds left. I didn't think there was
- 2:31Speaker 3: gonna be a penalty. I just thought there was. It
- 2:34Speaker 3: was unfortunate that it happened, so listen, we had plenty
- 2:38Speaker 3: of chances to score and not even have the game
- 2:42Speaker 3: in overtime. So but you know, Mike Rabel was pretty good.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, quite the weekend when you get to
- 2:52Speaker 1: the shootout, how do you determine who takes the shootouts?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Is there some sort of like you go through and
- 2:56Speaker 1: practice and you determine who's been good who hasn't.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah, we we do a shootout the Thursday usually before
- 3:05Speaker 3: every weekend before a game, and the guys that score
- 3:10Speaker 3: in that shootout are the guys I usually go with.
- 3:14Speaker 3: That's how we determine who goes. And sometimes it's like
- 3:19Speaker 3: we went with Shahan because Shahan had two goals against
- 3:21Speaker 3: that kid. He had scored on him in a shootout
- 3:24Speaker 3: last year, and he had scored on him in regulation.
- 3:27Speaker 3: So we started with Shahan because of that, because of
- 3:29Speaker 3: previous And sometimes it's just like when Houston Cartman went
- 3:34Speaker 3: against Harvard, Like he turned around and looked at me
- 3:36Speaker 3: and goes, I can beat this kid. And I love that. Yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 3: Like if a kid turns around and says to me,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I can beat this kid, all right, you're up next.
- 3:45Speaker 3: You know, some of it's based on that. In the moment,
- 3:49Speaker 3: I want to see a guy who's like, I think
- 3:52Speaker 3: I can beat this kid.
- 3:53Speaker 2: In baseball, you know, you strike out against a pitcher,
- 3:57Speaker 2: you see the guy walk to the man on deck
- 4:00Speaker 2: and give him kind of Hey, this is what the
- 4:01Speaker 2: guy's throwing. This is what I saw in the abat
- 4:03Speaker 2: Is there any of that in a shootout where.
- 4:05Speaker 3: They talk on the bench, But most guys just have
- 4:10Speaker 3: their move that they're going to go with. Yeah, but
- 4:16Speaker 3: you know the virtuosity that he plays that position with
- 4:19Speaker 3: Arabel was never more evident than the saving made on Blaze.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, he's he's really skilled and fluent goaltender.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he's six seventies that fluid, And that's
- 4:34Speaker 1: the scary part of it. I know, it's Utah should
- 4:38Speaker 1: be happy they have him.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I wish they signed him tomorrow, but I wish
- 4:44Speaker 3: they signed him last week. But no, he's he's an
- 4:46Speaker 3: excellent goaltender. And but we had our chances too that
- 4:53Speaker 3: where I thought we could have capitalized on. And that's hockey.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Like I said, I'm really happy with the way we
- 4:59Speaker 3: played and the amount of chances we generated. And if
- 5:03Speaker 3: we if we keep putting fifty shots on net, we're
- 5:06Speaker 3: gonna win a lot of hockey games. I know.
- 5:08Speaker 2: In a little bit we're going to talk to Tray
- 5:09Speaker 2: Scott and he had his first career goal actually the
- 5:12Speaker 2: first of the season that season. Yeah, I'm sorry, that
- 5:14Speaker 2: was my fault and talking to him, we're talking about him.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You said, oh, he's not the most loquation. How do
- 5:20Speaker 2: you navigate that as a on the recruiting trail. I
- 5:23Speaker 2: just find it interesting, you know, we think about these
- 5:25Speaker 2: guys when you're evaluating skills, but there's obviously the the
- 5:28Speaker 2: person component as well. So you know, having a guy
- 5:32Speaker 2: that you say, Okay, he's going to be a vocal leader,
- 5:34Speaker 2: this guy might be a little quieter. How do you
- 5:35Speaker 2: just navigate the the person while you're also trying to
- 5:39Speaker 2: navigate the skills.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Well, it's not like he's a mute. No, I don't
- 5:44Speaker 3: want to say that. You're saying, you know, Tabor heaslip
- 5:48Speaker 3: doesn't shut up. Yeah, exactly. It's great because he brings
- 5:52Speaker 3: so much energy to practice. And when I say that,
- 5:55Speaker 3: he does it in a good way. You know, he's
- 5:57Speaker 3: just it's natural to him to to be vocal all
- 6:01Speaker 3: the time. Not everybody has to be. So I wasn't
- 6:05Speaker 3: saying that as a knocko. No, No, And I think
- 6:07Speaker 3: the first thing you do is when you recruit somebody,
- 6:10Speaker 3: you obviously can they help our team as a hockey player?
- 6:15Speaker 3: And then when you meet them are they going to
- 6:17Speaker 3: fit in with our group? And Trey fits in extremely well.
- 6:22Speaker 3: He's he's an awesome kid, gets along with everybody, and
- 6:28Speaker 3: he at times he will speak up and lead. And
- 6:33Speaker 3: the other thing is he's only a sophomore. You know,
- 6:36Speaker 3: Ryan Taddle didn't say much as a sophomore, but they
- 6:40Speaker 3: grow into it. So I'm not saying that he's always
- 6:43Speaker 3: going to be like that. I believe that, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 3: as he grows older and he becomes a veteran on
- 6:49Speaker 3: this team, he will have a voice.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Well, you threw him into the Wolves last year. I mean,
- 6:53Speaker 1: he didn't start right away, and then once you got
- 6:55Speaker 1: him in, you couldn't take him out. And eventually he
- 6:57Speaker 1: got the keys to the power play. And I know
- 6:59Speaker 1: he went through some injury woes this season, but the
- 7:01Speaker 1: second half he's been pretty good, pretty darn good.
- 7:03Speaker 3: He's Yeah, he was definitely banged up the first half
- 7:07Speaker 3: of the year, and I think he's healthy now and
- 7:11Speaker 3: he's so much composure and with the pock up top,
- 7:15Speaker 3: you know, you need a quarterback on your power play,
- 7:17Speaker 3: and he does that really really well for us.
- 7:19Speaker 1: What about Kai, same type.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Kai's a little like Kai's Kai's loquacious. Yeah, Kai's very confident,
- 7:30Speaker 3: uh energetic, talks all the time. He's a little different,
- 7:36Speaker 3: but they're both effective. They're both effective in the way
- 7:39Speaker 3: they play. I thought that this past weekend was Kai's
- 7:43Speaker 3: best weekend that he's had this year. I thought he
- 7:46Speaker 3: was dynamite all weekend. He The thing about Kai is,
- 7:51Speaker 3: because of his size, everybody thinks he has to be
- 7:55Speaker 3: an offensive defenseman. You don't see many five eight defensemen
- 7:59Speaker 3: then aren't really offensive. His defense might be the best
- 8:05Speaker 3: on our team, Like that's his calling card, you can check.
- 8:08Speaker 3: I'm not sure, but he might lead our team in
- 8:10Speaker 3: plus minus because he defends. Oh, we'll look at we're
- 8:15Speaker 3: watching this right on ESPN right now.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, to the devil you made PTI.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Congratulation pill PTI and the other.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It says, what's the bigger gaff? The light or a
- 8:28Speaker 2: pace car? There was a half marathon and the pace
- 8:32Speaker 2: car led the person who was winning down a side
- 8:35Speaker 2: street and they ended up losing because they followed the
- 8:37Speaker 2: pace car down the wrong say the pace I would think,
- 8:40Speaker 2: so I'd be angry. Or if I was that.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Pace car, check to see if the pace car has
- 8:44Speaker 3: a fan duel account. Yeah, exactly.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, high is yes plus eight going into the past
- 8:50Speaker 1: week and plus eighteen, and Viking was plus sixteen.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and Kai's defense and nobody in our team closes
- 8:59Speaker 3: time and space better than Kai. His stick is elite,
- 9:03Speaker 3: his gaps are elite, and his competitiveness. When you watch
- 9:07Speaker 3: him go into a battle, it doesn't matter who it's with,
- 9:10Speaker 3: nest Saul. He went into a battle with Nestra Saul
- 9:13Speaker 3: and took him out and took the puck. He is
- 9:16Speaker 3: an outstanding defensive defenseman.
- 9:18Speaker 1: All right, we'll take a break. Get more than the defenseman,
- 9:21Speaker 1: because you know who's been laying the wood lately, Anthony Lane.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Samaki has been knocking some people around, and we talked
- 9:26Speaker 1: about that in the last Coaches Show and about your
- 9:29Speaker 1: expectations for him. We're live at Bear smoke House Barbecue.
- 9:32Speaker 1: A couple in a bits, we'll hear interviews with todm.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Muslik and Trey Scott. Back to Bears in a minute.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Here on Learfield, stay with us,
