- 0:00The best 50th birthday present ever in the morning.
- 0:03Yeah, a heart attack. On today's show we talk Pikes
- 0:07Peak, which somehow manages to carry on this year without us,
- 0:11and the new Corvette ZR1X, which we can agree will also carry on
- 0:16without us. I share where the bad RWB
- 0:20Porsches touched me and Dan shares why he still won't touch
- 0:23a Ford Bronco Raptor even with $10,000 on the hood.
- 0:28Lindsay's back from France again, this time from Lamar,
- 0:32where she ate ice cream with Jim Farley, talked podcast with
- 0:35Chris Harris, and watched a race.
- 0:38It's that car show. Hey, it is that car show.
- 0:43It's like 1000° in this garage in Denver.
- 0:46So I'm a little little shiny tonight, but how are you 2?
- 0:50Great. How are you?
- 0:52Other than being a little warm, I'm great.
- 0:53You just got back from Lamar, Dan.
- 0:55I know you've been running around like a crazy man out in
- 0:58LA. Did you have a break in?
- 1:02Because like I'm sure the last time we recorded, there was a
- 1:05second car in your. Garage.
- 1:07I hadn't noticed. What the hell?
- 1:09Yeah, so no more 88560 SL up on the rack.
- 1:13If you are listening, you are in the Denver area and you need a
- 1:17place to store favorite car. Man, you know you can't beat
- 1:22passive income, right? Like that's the best kind of.
- 1:26Income, right? It is, yeah.
- 1:29It doesn't get away right because it's it's it's.
- 1:31Above Yeah, yeah. So you can't be someone who
- 1:33wants to get your car out every day, but you know, if you're
- 1:35looking to to leave it for a few weeks at a time, you know, it's
- 1:38it's it's pretty perfect. But I do miss having the you
- 1:41know, the the the sights and the smells of an old Mercedes in the
- 1:44garage. You know, it's got, it's got,
- 1:47it's a certain something. It's, I don't know what you call
- 1:50it. Is it probably a French word?
- 1:52Miss Lemont or or horse hair or whatever?
- 1:57Right. Stuffed in the seat.
- 1:59You know that car sat here for nine months, 10 months.
- 2:03Yes, it was on a trickle charger, but started right away.
- 2:06You know, barely leaked any oil, you know, Barely.
- 2:09Any smoke? Startup, right?
- 2:12Try that with a brand new Mercedes.
- 2:15Yeah, he's German. They.
- 2:16Try that with your CLA 220. Imagine if it was British.
- 2:20Yeah. Is there a like a filter when
- 2:24someone applies to usual cars garage for storage?
- 2:27Like is it British? Is it Italian?
- 2:30No German? Oh please come and have a look.
- 2:31Yeah. I mean, I'd love to have a nice
- 2:33career GT up here. Hey, put it out into the.
- 2:37World, yeah, yeah. And it'll, it'll happen, it'll
- 2:39manifest, right? But yeah, so yeah, that's a
- 2:41little different, a little brighter in here.
- 2:43I guess that's true. But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:46It's just been crazy and I haven't even gone anywhere.
- 2:50Like I didn't go to France, but you did.
- 2:51Do you wanna? I went for the team, I went for
- 2:55all of us. Thank you, Lindsay.
- 2:57That's dedication. Yeah, I am a giver, if nothing
- 3:00else. It's it's tax deductible, which
- 3:02helps right And so all right, so tell us if you don't know we we
- 3:07obviously know this, but you just got back from Lamar and
- 3:09just. Got back from the 24 hours of
- 3:11Lamar. And you had Lamar, France.
- 3:13You had never been before. I had never been.
- 3:15This was my first time and we, I, Tori and I went together and
- 3:20my parents were there and there was a group of Ford and Shelby
- 3:23enthusiasts and we were able to be in the Ford suite.
- 3:26So that was a very nice part of the experience.
- 3:30But we started off, we won customs in Iceland because we,
- 3:33we flew from Seattle to Iceland and then on to Paris.
- 3:37And it was, you know, did basically an overnight flight,
- 3:41but it was only 6 hours. So we were a little bleary eyed
- 3:44when we got there. And we were going through
- 3:46customs and the agent was asking us, you know, where you are, you
- 3:49staying in Iceland, where you going?
- 3:50And we said, no, we're going to Lamar for the race.
- 3:52And he perked up and he said, you're my first people that are
- 3:56doing anything fun. You gotta like the Icelandic
- 4:00people. They're good.
- 4:01People so cute and we're like, did we just win customs?
- 4:04I think we did. This episode is sponsored by
- 4:06Iceland Tourism. Yes, she was also Bjork, but.
- 4:14Yeah, the swan dress kind of got in the way in the booth, but you
- 4:17know who's counting, let's be honest.
- 4:19And then, yeah, the first thing we saw in the Iceland airport
- 4:21was a big Stetson display. So I'm like this feels like we
- 4:24made a wrong turn to. Them.
- 4:25Oh wow, oh wow. Stetson and Filson, which may
- 4:28sound familiar to Dan. They're basically.
- 4:30Yeah. Yeah, so come get all your
- 4:32American outdoor and Western gear in Reykjavik.
- 4:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. You said it was hot as Hades
- 4:39there. It was the first.
- 4:41Couple days. No.
- 4:42And once we got to Paris and we stopped quickly at the Eiffel
- 4:45Tower, as one does, you know, on the way to Tours, which is where
- 4:48we stayed and there was some pretty interesting car spotting
- 4:52on the way there. We saw a fourth Gen.
- 4:54Camaro American. Didn't expect that.
- 4:57A little, little. Little little bit of pride.
- 5:00Well. We were like, Yep, Subaru
- 5:04Forester again. Not expecting to see that in
- 5:06Paris. In downtown Paris, several full
- 5:10size Ram trucks, which was. That's a weird flex if you're
- 5:13French. There was a lot, yeah.
- 5:15We were like, there's a lot that we were not expecting.
- 5:17One of them we saw when we were leaving on Sunday and it was
- 5:20towing a Porsche Motorsport trailer with the GTS inside.
- 5:23Well, at least they're towing with it.
- 5:25Right. We can't think about it, right?
- 5:27The French farmers love to protest.
- 5:29And is there anything better than parking a ram?
- 5:32That's your protest? Yeah, true.
- 5:35Did you drive to Lamont Lindsay from France?
- 5:38From Paris? OK, that's a pilgrimage in its
- 5:40own right, right? It is.
- 5:42I mean, it really made it part of the adventure and it let us
- 5:44stop in Paris proper and like see the Eiffel Tower quickly and
- 5:48all of that because obviously if you take the train like that's a
- 5:52set route, you're not, you know, you're not exiting.
- 5:54Yeah. So yeah, it was cool because we
- 5:57got to see more of the countryside and then we had more
- 6:00flexibility like on the race days as far as staying because
- 6:04the group we were with did have a shuttle because Tours is about
- 6:06an hour from Lamont. But yeah, it just let us kind of
- 6:10design our own trip, which was nice.
- 6:12So I. Was going to wear my Lamont
- 6:14T-shirt a few years ago when I was a younger man.
- 6:16My mother-in-law got me a Lamont T-shirt and she went to Fern the
- 6:18shirt and I put it on and it really looked like a French
- 6:21sausage in the thing. So that didn't happen, but I
- 6:24tried. Yeah, the thought was was was
- 6:27there, but that's as close I've ever gotten.
- 6:30The end you've been it sounds like.
- 6:32Yeah, yeah, I want. To say 2009, so a long, long
- 6:35time ago, but it used to be like 70,000 Brits used to go every
- 6:40year. I don't know this is still the
- 6:42same number. But yeah, it was a pilgrimage
- 6:44for sure. Yeah.
- 6:45There were a lot of British people there.
- 6:47When we went on Saturday, the guy that parked next to us
- 6:52actually had a, he had like AG 5911 Targa that was gorgeous.
- 6:57He's had it about 20 years and he's a restaurateur from Royal
- 7:00Tonbridge Wells. Actually, Dan, we start talking
- 7:02to him, British guy, he had driven over that morning, driven
- 7:06through the tunnel and he said it was amazing.
- 7:09And the car, his car was gorgeous.
- 7:11It had this amazing Plaid interior, you know, Plaid
- 7:13inserts, handmade shift knob. He wasn't sure what color it
- 7:17was. It was kind of like a deep ice
- 7:20blue metallic. It was just in amazing shape.
- 7:22But he's had it for 20 years. But yeah, a lot of British
- 7:25people, we did. So on Friday afternoon.
- 7:28They do. It used to be like the drivers
- 7:31parade through the town of Lamont.
- 7:33And so if you're at the track, you can take, they have like a
- 7:37local metro kind of tram. So we took that from the track
- 7:40into the town. And they've got the town all
- 7:43strung with, you know, banners and it's like a very big party
- 7:46atmosphere. There's they had a band and all
- 7:49kinds of, you know, booths and Aperol spritz and beer gardens
- 7:53and all that stuff. And it looked, if you've seen
- 7:55Ford versus Ferrari, they did a really good job of recreating
- 7:59the town with like the little Pennant banners over the and it
- 8:03was like, I mean, we felt like we were walking through the
- 8:05movie several times. And like the scene where Ken
- 8:08Miles wakes up and walks through, you know, there's the
- 8:10drunk guy outside his hotel and he says, well, I'm just going to
- 8:12go walk the track. Like when he comes out of the
- 8:15hotel, I think this is the town he's supposed to be.
- 8:17It's the town of Le Mans and it was very authentic.
- 8:20But yeah, we ended up going to see the parade.
- 8:23I think it's now called the Driver's party because it was a
- 8:25little I'm, I'm really glad we did it.
- 8:28It was a little anticlimactic from what I understand.
- 8:30I think it may have been more driver centric when you were
- 8:34there, Dan, but we ended up meeting a French police officer
- 8:38who had studied in San Diego. So that was very funny.
- 8:41And then made friends with some Danish people that were standing
- 8:44right with us who lived in the town where I grew up in Orange
- 8:47County in California. So you just never know who
- 8:50you're going to meet. Well, you met a few other folks
- 8:53too, right? I think you met one Chris Harris
- 8:55while you were there, who I'm hoping has a That car show
- 8:59sticker on the back of his phone now, but you tell me.
- 9:03Yeah, we were in the the Ford hospitality suite and I looked
- 9:06over and I went, Oh my God, that's Chris Harris.
- 9:09And he was eating with Jim Farley.
- 9:10And so then Jim had to come do something and Chris was there
- 9:14with someone else. And then he was by himself.
- 9:16And I was like, I'm just going to introduce myself and tell him
- 9:18I love the podcast. And so I went up and introduced
- 9:21myself. And at first he was a little
- 9:23wary. And then I said, I really love
- 9:24your show. You know, I have a podcast also
- 9:27and we talk about your show all the time.
- 9:28You got it in. I.
- 9:30Did and. And his face totally changed and
- 9:33he he was like, what? And he said, well, thank you so
- 9:35much for listening. And I said, yeah, we really, we
- 9:38love the format and how you moderate it.
- 9:40And he was like, oh, that's, that's really great.
- 9:43Thank you so much. So in a weird way.
- 9:47Because he drove in the Mustang Challenge.
- 9:48Oh that's awesome. Because they did.
- 9:50Ford flew all of the Mustang Challenge or they flew 40 of the
- 9:53Mustang Challenge cars to France to do 2 races before the 24 hour
- 9:59race started. And so he drove one of them with
- 10:02Sir Chris Hoy. And then Jim Farley was also
- 10:04driving in the race. And we have a family friend,
- 10:07Steve Vita, that we met at Laguna Seca when I was there for
- 10:11the Land Rover event in May. And my he was pitted right next
- 10:17to my dad in the paddock. So then he and his wife were
- 10:20there, so we got to see them. So yeah, that was really fun.
- 10:23And we got to go into the Mustang Challenge paddock where
- 10:27they had all the cars. We went in after the race, which
- 10:31was really interesting. And my family's been watching
- 10:33that series. So it was wild because I kept
- 10:36going. OK, I remember this car from the
- 10:37TV and I remember this significant on TV because the
- 10:40deliveries are so distinctive. They had one that was racing in
- 10:45the States that was fully chromed.
- 10:47I didn't see that one there, but but yeah, Jib drove in that.
- 10:51Chris Harris was there. And there's a gal who's an F1
- 10:56expert and commentator, Tony Cowan Brown.
- 10:58She was there and we've been, I've followed her on Instagram,
- 11:01but it was fun to meet her in person.
- 11:03And then some of our listeners may know Pinstripe Chris.
- 11:07He's an artist based in Orange County and he knows Paul Kramer
- 11:12from Auto Kennel very well. And he was actually in the suite
- 11:15doing a piece of the Mustang GTD like over the course of the
- 11:20weekend, like painting it. So he and his wife Katie were
- 11:22there. So it was great to see him.
- 11:24We were like, we didn't leave Costa Mesa.
- 11:25What's going on? And then Ed Lowe for Motor Trend
- 11:29was there. Cool.
- 11:30And actually, right when we got into Paris, we ran into Emmy
- 11:34Hall, who's a freelancer, and she's done the rebel rally and
- 11:38she's just kind of a badass all around automotive media gal.
- 11:42And yeah, ran into her right away.
- 11:44She was there with Genesis. So yeah, there were all kinds of
- 11:47people. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:49And you? And and I live there.
- 11:51Yes, I was there, yeah. They're back on their podcast
- 11:54right now talking about how they ran into Lindsay Josh, you know,
- 11:57so. The. $1,000,000 The $1,000,000
- 12:00question, did you stay up for the 24 hours?
- 12:03Almost, yeah, yes. So it was a very quick trip,
- 12:09just the way it worked out with my schedule.
- 12:11So because we realized we probably weren't going to be
- 12:14able to get back from tours to Lamont and then also leave on
- 12:18Sunday. So we ended up staying up till
- 12:22probably about four on Saturday. Well, Sunday morning, yeah, this
- 12:26old gal, I was like, there was a lot of coffee that day.
- 12:30It's. Just the youngest one on the
- 12:32show. Right.
- 12:33Mama's old bones. But yeah.
- 12:35And it's, you know, there was so much energy and it really was
- 12:41like, I didn't expect it to be as weighty as it was, but being
- 12:46there, you know, I've said this before, like Ford versus Ferrari
- 12:48is one of my favorite movies for a lot of different reasons, but
- 12:51I've really connected with it. And that was a lot of like the
- 12:54stories that I heard of my childhood.
- 12:57And obviously, Lamar is a huge part, if not the storyline in
- 13:00that movie. And it kind of hit me when we
- 13:03got there, like we're in the spot, like we're standing in all
- 13:06the places where all of those events happened, real events.
- 13:10And you could sort of feel like the weight and the significance
- 13:13of it. And it was, you know, it was
- 13:17just, it was very momentous and meaningful and just sort of
- 13:21like, you could definitely hear like the whispers of the past
- 13:24and feel all the layers and everything that's happened
- 13:26there. And, you know, Friday night, the
- 13:29race obviously starts Saturday afternoon.
- 13:32Friday night, we had the grandstands completely to
- 13:34ourselves. Like Tori and I were just
- 13:35walking around and he realized we could just walk into the
- 13:38grandstands. They were open and we did and we
- 13:41were the only ones there and it was just like, it was a really
- 13:44nice moment to take it all in and just sort of.
- 13:46The hell of a picture. Yeah, right.
- 13:49Right. He's got a good eye because all
- 13:51of a sudden he's like, wait a minute, I think we could do
- 13:53this. And there's nobody in the stands
- 13:55on either side. It was crazy.
- 13:57Yeah, yeah, that was very cool. Shout out to our friend Maurice
- 14:00at Horsepower Heritage, who just put out a great, I think it was
- 14:04an encore episode, but about the most tragic day at Le Mans and
- 14:08all that. And this is this is this all
- 14:10happened where you, I mean, there's that.
- 14:11That's got to like kind of hang heavy in the air, right?
- 14:13Well, that was the thing. And especially when we were in
- 14:15the stands, we were standing there and we realized like we
- 14:17could just look, you know, to our left, we were opposite the
- 14:20garages, but we could look. And we're like, that's exactly
- 14:23where the 1955 disaster happened.
- 14:25And all those people lost their lives and. 55. 1955 Well, I
- 14:30think it was, I think it was between 80 and 90 people were
- 14:34injured or killed, you know, and that like, and Mercedes pulled
- 14:39out and they didn't do the race for a long, long, long time
- 14:41after that because they felt so awful.
- 14:44And it was an interesting combination of, you know, sort
- 14:47of the magic of the event and just the wonder of getting to be
- 14:50there, period. But then also like all of all of
- 14:55the history there and you know, a lot of my upbringing was
- 15:00focused on around like the stories of the 60s and Carol
- 15:03Shelby and everything he contributed and just, you know,
- 15:0710 miles and everything he contributed and all of that.
- 15:11And then we didn't realize until we were there, we were looking
- 15:13something else up. I didn't, I hadn't put it
- 15:15together that Ken passed away two months after Le Mans.
- 15:18So that was kind of hanging heavy too.
- 15:20I mean, I didn't realize it was so close, but something that was
- 15:24interesting because, you know, I think a lot of people know what
- 15:28some people may not. One of the issues with the year
- 15:31that Ken raced and with Ford making them making him slow down
- 15:36so that they could finish all together.
- 15:38And then the wind was taken away from him because the the
- 15:42monitoring committee ruled that Bruce McLaren had started behind
- 15:46him. So he'd actually driven farther.
- 15:48So he'd actually won even though Ken was several laps up and the
- 15:53there are some sources that say Ken was still a lap up when they
- 15:56finished, so there should have been no question even though
- 15:58they drove physically together. This is why I like computers and
- 16:03computer timing. It's just well and so it.
- 16:06Seems wild. If Ken had been allowed to keep
- 16:09the win, he would have won Daytona, Sebring and Lamont in
- 16:13the same year. So we were looking it up when we
- 16:15were there. Other people have won all three,
- 16:18but nobody has done it in the same year.
- 16:20So he still would be the only person to win it in the same
- 16:23year. But what we realized when we
- 16:25were there, there's a driver who had one Sebring and Daytona, and
- 16:30he was driving this year and for a while his car was second.
- 16:34So we thought, is there a chance somebody's going to achieve it
- 16:37for the first time? And we're here.
- 16:39Yeah, yeah. Wow.
- 16:40And they didn't end up, but there was a lot of like current
- 16:44and past tie in which made. A movie, Yeah.
- 16:46Yeah. You know.
- 16:47Like made it much more layered than I was.
- 16:49Expecting. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:52Where were we? I guess it was Car week last
- 16:54year. We walked into a very special
- 16:55private collection and the collection mechanic comes out
- 16:58and wasn't it like Ken Miles's son or something?
- 17:02Peter Miles, Yeah. Yes, where?
- 17:05Where was that? Well, it was in Carmel.
- 17:07Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't want to see the name,
- 17:09but yeah, yeah, yeah. And it was surreal because.
- 17:13Yeah, you're like, wait a minute, We know.
- 17:16Yeah. I mean, he was out at Willow for
- 17:19the Shelby celebration in February, so I got to talk to
- 17:21him a little bit and he's nice man.
- 17:23Yeah, yeah, totally. Yeah, he's wonderful.
- 17:26That was a surreal cap or 2A surreal day of a surreal week.
- 17:29But. Yeah, 'cause he's trying to go
- 17:31like, well, that can't be the same Peter Miles and.
- 17:34I don't know enough like you to like like talk myself out of,
- 17:37you know, so it sounds epic. Would you have done anything
- 17:40differently? Did you miss anything you really
- 17:42wanted to do or see? Do you want to go back or is
- 17:45this like a once a decade thing or what?
- 17:47Do they still have the Ferris wheel?
- 17:49They do. Did you go on it?
- 17:51I did. Oh wow.
- 17:53Thanks to my fiance's encouraging heights are not my
- 17:57first choice, but I will say if heights bother you, I think
- 18:02you'd be fine on this. And it was an amazing way to see
- 18:07a really good chunk of the track.
- 18:09And we went we went late at night so you can see the
- 18:12headlights and I think that actually helps far.
- 18:15I think it helped because I think during the day it like it
- 18:18made them easier to see and so I think you could see farther
- 18:21maybe. But yeah, I mean, what?
- 18:24You know, it's like you can't go to Le Mans, not go on the
- 18:26Ferris. Right, right, you do.
- 18:28At the end. Yeah, we were going to sort of
- 18:29Chuck you off the call if you deserve now, right?
- 18:32And you're out. Yeah, no, of course.
- 18:34Is it still in the same place? Is it like the final chicane
- 18:36before the straight? There's two and we went on the
- 18:40bigger one. OK, when I was there, it was
- 18:43right by the final chicane before the start finish straight
- 18:47and I didn't do it the right time, but the the the perfect
- 18:51time to do it is sunset or sunrise.
- 18:53Yeah. Because you've got everything
- 18:55going on at that point. And I, or I could see, I mean,
- 18:59it'd be pretty cool if you could time it to be when the race
- 19:01finishes. Too.
- 19:01Yeah, right. It's like after you.
- 19:03After you. Yeah.
- 19:04You're like, no, no, by all means, no, no, please go.
- 19:07Yeah, it was, I mean, it was like a moment out of a movie
- 19:10because you're like, I'm on the Ferris wheel at Le Mans.
- 19:13Like come on, Whose life is this?
- 19:15Drinking champagne, I was going. To say that helps too, right?
- 19:18To get you. Not not as much.
- 19:20I actually that was much more moderated because I knew it was
- 19:25going to be a really long night, so there was a lot more coffee
- 19:28than champagne. Not to say we didn't toast to be
- 19:32the. 3rd I'm guessing you didn't sleep in a Chevy Equinox at any
- 19:36point during the. No journey.
- 19:40So you said what would I do differently next time?
- 19:42I would be sure that we get an equinox, that we could go sleep.
- 19:47Yeah, No, I think there were one thing that we did that was a
- 19:52must do if you and I don't know how you would get access to it
- 19:56because it was part of the group that we were with.
- 19:58But we had the chance to go watch the race from three
- 20:02different corners, Indianapolis golf and the first chicane on
- 20:08the most on straight and that was unreal, you know, and like
- 20:13so getting to watch from the suite where we could see part of
- 20:16the straight and then. Some of the curves right after
- 20:19that. So you could really see the cars
- 20:21in action. I mean, you could see like the
- 20:24driver skill and the power. You could see the downforce.
- 20:28You could see the way the cars were behaving.
- 20:30At one point, like one of the prototype cars kind of went like
- 20:32that. And it was like you could see
- 20:33the wind pushing down and like that was very intense.
- 20:38And then when we were at Indianapolis, they were under a
- 20:43full course yellow, so everybody had to slow way down.
- 20:47So it wasn't as exciting. But we also got to get a much
- 20:49better look at the cars themselves.
- 20:51So that was really cool. Yeah.
- 20:55I mean and getting to see golf Corner which is like a hard 90°
- 21:01right turn. So you see the cars come
- 21:04screaming up you can and we went at night.
- 21:06Yes, you the rotors. Glowing.
- 21:08Yeah, OK, that was my next question.
- 21:09Yeah, that's. Unreal.
- 21:11And you could really see, you know, some of them shoot planes
- 21:13out of these. Right, Right, right.
- 21:14That like it made it much more visible.
- 21:17Yeah. And yeah.
- 21:19I mean, and just to hear them coming up and it's, it's in, you
- 21:24know, there are a lot of trees. Like, I don't know if it
- 21:25qualifies as a forest, but there's a lot of trees.
- 21:28And so you'd hear them much sooner than you'd see them, and
- 21:31they come screaming out of the trees and then they have to slam
- 21:34on the brakes, go right. And so you'd see the fire, You
- 21:37could see the rotors. And then just to hear them
- 21:39accelerate and you know, that was the corner.
- 21:42I think that Dan Gurney invented the chicken shit breaking
- 21:45because they were trying to figure out how to not overheat
- 21:48the rotors And so. He's tell us about that.
- 21:50I don't know what that is. So he would lift like 300 yards
- 21:54before he would have started breaking, and he would let the
- 21:57engine slow the car down. Then he would break.
- 22:00I see. And then he'd accelerate out of
- 22:01the corner. But it let him, like, kept the
- 22:04rotors cooler and it let him, I think, get on the gas sooner.
- 22:08And so it gave them a competitive edge.
- 22:10Take some guts. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:12Look, I've seen interviews where he spoke about it and he's like,
- 22:16so yeah, like definitely not for the faint of heart.
- 22:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:22And, and they had, you know, like Aston Martin had a display.
- 22:26They had a Valtterini there and then Casa de Ferrari, you know,
- 22:31it's always lovely. They had a really visually
- 22:34impactful display that included a 499 P, an F80 and a 296
- 22:39special, and it was really beautiful.
- 22:43And then we got to see the 963 up close and the 97, the Count
- 22:48Rossi 917. Oh yeah, Which?
- 22:50Was like, that is a thing to behold.
- 22:52Yeah, just wild. Like you know, it's the only Rd.
- 22:57legal 917 ever made and it was there.
- 22:59Yeah, that's amazing. That's what I didn't realize
- 23:01until we got there, is there's a Porsche Experience Center at
- 23:03Lamar, OH. There is all right.
- 23:05Yeah. So they weren't doing the.
- 23:07Forget Pekla. Forget.
- 23:08I know I did. There it's.
- 23:12Yeah, it definitely. It's like if you can't go to the
- 23:14one at Lamar, forget it. Yeah, sounds like a hell of a
- 23:18trip. Sounds like an amazing trip.
- 23:20It was amazing. You had a good travel buddy
- 23:22with? You.
- 23:23I did, yeah. We traveled incredibly well
- 23:25together, which is very nice. Makes a big difference.
- 23:28All right, well, this is how you know this thing's forever
- 23:30because you just, you just drove a GT4 with buckets from Kansas
- 23:33City to Seattle and then turned around and went to the mall and
- 23:38all that and still have a smile on your face and.
- 23:41No fights. Yeah, Yeah.
- 23:42Well, you didn't have to sleep in a Chevy Equinox.
- 23:44But there wasn't even a Chevy Equinox.
- 23:46I did sleep. In the carbon buckets, that's.
- 23:48That's. Also talking about my sleeping
- 23:50escape. Yeah, Pike's Peak.
- 23:51What was that? That was It was Ford Edge.
- 23:54So this weekend is the anniversary.
- 23:56It's the one year anniversary of me sleeping in a Ford Edge at
- 24:00the top of a mountain. I did wonder where you were
- 24:03going with the Equinox. Well, I was going to segue
- 24:05because you know, that race is this weekend.
- 24:08So when you hear this, it'll be, I think the next day.
- 24:12And this is the first time in a couple three years that I
- 24:15haven't been going. I didn't go to Porsche Colorado
- 24:18Springs as drivers meet and greet and I I have a little,
- 24:23little confession. It's because I had 30 bags of
- 24:26mulch liver to my house and I threw out not only my back but
- 24:29my knee and I just was. And your dignity bill?
- 24:34And your your enthusiasm for getting in the car and driving
- 24:38hours? And hours yeah, yeah, I just, I
- 24:40was I was a broken man by big 30.
- 24:43So yeah, that's fair. Back one to the race this year
- 24:46either. I think it's going to be
- 24:48wonderful. I think the weather's going to
- 24:49be good. There's some cool cars, great
- 24:51drivers. It I felt a little bad.
- 24:52It was kind of like, you know, broke tradition, but, you know.
- 24:56Lots of every now friends. There sending pictures and
- 24:59stuff. You got to take a break, right?
- 25:00Like it's a it's a lot to dance, but that's all.
- 25:02We just, I'm not a the older I get, the tougher it is to get up
- 25:05early for that kind of stuff like 24 hours of Lamont, that
- 25:08might be tough. You know, and we did a lot more
- 25:11of the 24 hours than I was anticipating.
- 25:14Yeah. That's, but I think there is an
- 25:16element of like once you're there, it kind of hits you and
- 25:18you go like you have to just like take it, take full
- 25:22advantage of as much of it as you can.
- 25:24Yeah. Yeah, yeah, there's, there's
- 25:25that. And that's I guess why I always
- 25:26felt a little guilty about we would meet these people here,
- 25:29you know, in Colorado who had traveled, you know, from all
- 25:32across the globe to be here, right.
- 25:34You know, and I, I think I maybe was starting to take it for
- 25:36granted a little bit. So, so now I'll build up, you
- 25:38know, my sort of envy of not being there.
- 25:40Next I'll be rearing to go and I'll plan my mulch spreading way
- 25:44far in. Advance well in advance of Pikes
- 25:46P. Maybe they need that on the
- 25:48track or next to the track. You could get a job there.
- 25:51You can join the ground. Absorbent or whatever on the
- 25:54yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And of course, without Dan here,
- 25:57you know it's not quite the same.
- 25:59I know. Either nice knowing.
- 26:00Just going to sleep in the boot of your edge come.
- 26:02On Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who's going to wake me up at
- 26:041:00 AM when we don't have to wake up until 3:30 AM and make
- 26:07it up at the same time? But now I'm kidding.
- 26:09That's not my fault. Sounds like someone still owes
- 26:13someone a beer and it's yeah, nobody on this.
- 26:15It was a great time and it's a great event, but maybe next year
- 26:19we can all do it or something. And yeah, it'll be a little
- 26:21easier on the on the pocketbook right then.
- 26:23I'm excited to see how Roman Dumas does this year because
- 26:26he's gone like every year. Is it a super something?
- 26:30The fourth? Yeah.
- 26:31Yeah, this year he's. Doing the Super Mustang Mach E
- 26:35right? Yeah.
- 26:36Yeah, I thought maybe they were going to put him in the Ford
- 26:39Raptor now that it's $10,000 off, but that's.
- 26:43Yeah, it's not super right now is.
- 26:45That is that That's not going to push you over the edge, Dan.
- 26:48I think Ford have been listening to the the podcast to reduce
- 26:51their prices accordingly. Oh God.
- 26:53They're giving away everything, right?
- 26:55Like, you know, we have this pole star and we're happy with
- 26:57it, but I get this e-mail today from pole * saying oh, now we
- 27:00can get the pole *3 for the same price.
- 27:02You know why? Just bring it in, you know, and,
- 27:04and just upgrade, you know. Just straight across.
- 27:07Yeah, yeah, I think it was Matt Fair on the Smoking Tire was
- 27:10talking about one of his buddies picked up the new Acura.
- 27:13Is it the ZDX the same thing? It's like $2500 down and 2:50 a
- 27:18month and you're in the $75,000 car.
- 27:20Like, I don't, I'm still struggling to to figure out how
- 27:22this all computes, but you know, it's.
- 27:25Well, it's kind of like was it the was it with the Fiat 500 you
- 27:27could get for free for. Free.
- 27:29I mean, they're getting to the point where they're going to pay
- 27:31you to take one. And yeah, lots of, lots of folks
- 27:33in Denver. Yeah.
- 27:35You know, that's, you know, it's just deals like that don't don't
- 27:38exist, but. Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 27:42Well, OK, Speaking of Ford, there was 1 moment I have to
- 27:45share from them that I remembered.
- 27:47In the Ford's hospitality suite or drinking.
- 27:51Champagne no. Ford Champagne.
- 27:53No Ford Champagne, No. There was Ford ice cream,
- 27:55though. So at one point after the race
- 27:59started, we were, we were lucky to get seats along the railing
- 28:03upstairs. And like, Tori and I were
- 28:05sitting there and my parents were there, and we looked over
- 28:07and Jim Farley's right next to Tori, just eating his ice cream.
- 28:11All right, I love it. We're.
- 28:12Just chatting with him. I love it.
- 28:13And later, we were like, it was reminiscent of the moment in
- 28:17Ford versus Ferrari when Henry Ford is upstairs.
- 28:19Henry Ford, the second is upstairs in the suite.
- 28:21You know, he calls down to the garages for an update.
- 28:24Yeah. Is Jim just hanging out?
- 28:26He's like, yeah, just want to check out the race.
- 28:28I love that. Finished his ice cream, you
- 28:29know, gave us a flavor recommendation and then he's
- 28:31like, all right, have a great time, guys.
- 28:33Yeah, Yeah. Is that before or after you
- 28:34said, hey, Jim, we've got a podcast.
- 28:36That's right. Speaking of, you know, talking
- 28:39about four branded alcoholic beverages, you know about Ford
- 28:41Landia, right, Where they built these company towns.
- 28:44Henry Ford, I think it was. I think there was one in
- 28:46Michigan and there was one in Brazil where they basically
- 28:48built these company towns to like, you know, clear cut the
- 28:53forests, you know, their materials or whatever.
- 28:56But if Ford ever decides to to make a vodka, I think Ford
- 29:01Landia would be what they would have to.
- 29:03There you go. Yeah, I kind of.
- 29:04Figured out why the Ford familiar and I realized that I
- 29:08was thinking of Portlandia that Fred Armisen did a few years
- 29:11ago. I'm like, it's awful.
- 29:12I've heard that before. You know my Fred Armisen story,
- 29:15right? I don't.
- 29:16When I was in middle school, I went to see a local punk rock
- 29:20show at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Indiana and he was in a
- 29:23band called Trench Mouth that played.
- 29:26And so I have his his like demo tape from like 1991 or
- 29:29something. Get out.
- 29:31At least I think it was him do. You have the technology to play
- 29:34so. I think they're still around.
- 29:38Now that I say that, I think I actually have a car that will
- 29:40play a cassette tape. So should we need to?
- 29:42Do OK. Some sort of experiment?
- 29:45Take that out. We can connect the tape with the
- 29:47car. And here's some vintage Fred
- 29:49Armisen. Yeah, you're hanging out with,
- 29:52you know, Chris Harris and. I know.
- 29:57You know, and I'm, I'm, yeah. Reminiscing about Fred Armisen.
- 30:00No, I love it 14. But All right, guys, I got to go
- 30:03on a little bit of a tear here. Something happened this week
- 30:06where my algorithm started sending me a lot of reels on
- 30:10Instagram about RWB and do these are these these Porsches?
- 30:13Do we know about these? Yeah.
- 30:15What's? You don't have any friends at
- 30:16RWB either, either of you, do you?
- 30:18I. Don't.
- 30:19Well, we know an owner of one, don't we?
- 30:21OK all. Right.
- 30:22So, yeah, so let's let's get the unfiltered.
- 30:26Don't hold back, Ryan. And and then we'll just share
- 30:30this directly with our good friend who's got the RWB.
- 30:34Then we'll talk about who we've been funded deeply.
- 30:36So these have been on my radar for a lot, right?
- 30:38We've known about these. This is not a new thing, right?
- 30:41And I know, you know, any publicity is good publicity and
- 30:44all that, but I finally saw, I think it was a local guy, uh,
- 30:48Matthew scandomaniac and Instagram who, who sent me the
- 30:51one that pushed me over the edge.
- 30:52And then I, of course I saw more and more of these things, but
- 30:54this was a so RDB RWB Porsches, if you don't know, it's this,
- 30:59it's this Japanese guy who basically travels the world and
- 31:03for X number of dollars, word on the street, it's about 24 to
- 31:06$40,000 will come and take your. I think it's a nine 3964, 997 or
- 31:14does he do 996? I don't know.
- 31:15It's like 4 different models. That would make sense if he does
- 31:1799 sixes and he basically. Yeah, there's a Targa 996 Targa
- 31:21in Seattle. This isn't car.
- 31:22Friend car. OK, OK.
- 31:24But he did it on 9/6 at the museum, I think the Tacoma
- 31:27Museum, Well, that's a. Yeah, kind of a shtick, right?
- 31:32Like you have a car, you fly him in and it's like him in his
- 31:35sawzall and he just goes to work on your car and as far as I know
- 31:40he doesn't. Like performance art, almost.
- 31:42That's that's the thing, right? So, so you know What Car, if you
- 31:46see it because it's it's it's so RWB stands for, they call it in
- 31:53German Rauvelt, which means rough world, which I think is a
- 31:57a good name. But this guy is a character,
- 31:59right? Like he's dishevelled.
- 32:01He's got like hair that comes out to here.
- 32:02He wears pajamas. He always has like a Marlboro
- 32:05between his lips and he basically sits on the floor and
- 32:07just goes to town with this saw. And the video that pushed me
- 32:10over the edge was one where he was, he has these like trademark
- 32:15Fender flares, right? These extensions, right?
- 32:18And he, he just had like some like Home Depot, like glue and a
- 32:22tube that just haphazardly like splattering on this thing to,
- 32:26to, you know, and it kind of pissed me off because we've
- 32:30already got everyone else tearing up these cars, right?
- 32:32And I guess I'm a bit of a Porsche purist, but what I don't
- 32:35understand is like you, you can, you can get a singer, you can
- 32:37get a, a gun that works and get these cars, but the craft is
- 32:41there, right? They're obviously done well.
- 32:43They've done really, really well.
- 32:44And, and it's not just cosmetics, right?
- 32:46Like it's, you know, they're obviously performance
- 32:48enhancements. And, and, you know, and as far
- 32:50as I know, these cars, unless I think the owners enhance the
- 32:53performance in any way, these are just, you know, cosmetic
- 32:57exercises, their art projects, right?
- 32:59And I, I really hated how they look for a long, long time.
- 33:04I'm starting to sort of come around on them, I think because
- 33:06I've seen a few of them now. So you'll know one when you see,
- 33:08when there are a lot of copies too.
- 33:09But they have these big sort of fiberglass, I think, or molded
- 33:12plastic fenders. They've got the RWB or the the
- 33:15rough World in German, whatever it is on the on the on the
- 33:18window and. Well, I think one of their
- 33:21distinctive characteristics is a lot of visible rivets.
- 33:23A. Lot of visible rivets.
- 33:25That's kind of a love it or hate it thing, right?
- 33:28But yeah, I saw this video of him sort of doing this thing and
- 33:31it just sort of pushed me over the edge.
- 33:32And so I decided to dig a little deeper.
- 33:35And I think that's sort of the conclusion I've come to as well.
- 33:39Lindsay, you mentioned performance art and I, I think
- 33:41that's kind of what's going on, right?
- 33:43You, if you've got some money, you've got an extra 24 to
- 33:46$40,000 lying around. You invite this guy from Japan
- 33:49and all your friends and, you know, whatever, you, you watch
- 33:52them work, right? And.
- 33:53You have a very unique experience.
- 33:56That's, that's what it is. But do you want to drive these
- 33:59things? Because I mean, these things are
- 34:00not going to last, right? I mean, they're, they're
- 34:02literally glued together. You're adding weight, right?
- 34:06I mean, you're not adding any performance.
- 34:09I just, I feel like there's, and I thought, well, you know, maybe
- 34:14this is sort of the antidote to the Porsche perfectionism,
- 34:19right? Maybe that's what appeals,
- 34:20right? It's removing the preciousness
- 34:22and just like, hey, just have fun with it and get out and
- 34:26enjoy it. But yeah, to your point, I've
- 34:28never heard how they drive and. That's like the one thing no one
- 34:32talks. Yeah, and I think that's where
- 34:35it fears more like that's why it's much more or it's as much
- 34:38performance art as it is like a, a retrofitting or a like.
- 34:44I wouldn't consider it a resto mod because it's so surface I
- 34:49guess so cosmetic. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:51I mean, how much rest of modding can you do in two days?
- 34:54But right, yeah. Well, wasn't there a video was
- 34:57it last year where they showed them and they were like gluing
- 35:01the tow hook on and everybody was?
- 35:02All but that kind of sums it up right?
- 35:05Like. Well, there was some something
- 35:07later where they're like, obviously we don't normally do
- 35:09this like something happened, but of course it created a lot
- 35:11of discussion, you know, like in among among the car world of
- 35:16like clearly you can't do that. Speaking of tow hooks, I think
- 35:20it was your Tori Lindsay who posted was it Manti Racing
- 35:24wanted? Is it $450 for a nylon tow I.
- 35:28Believe it was 8. Hundred $800.
- 35:31Or there was one that was found that was 800 and we both choked
- 35:34and yeah, probably. Not so maybe if you sort of come
- 35:38come full circle with this, like where else can you get this kind
- 35:41of visual impact, if you want to call it that for, you know,
- 35:45right, yeah, mid 5 figures right on top of the price of the car.
- 35:48But do we, I mean, like I have a real sort of like, I don't know,
- 35:53base reaction to these things, Like I just they bother me.
- 35:57And I guess you can do whatever you want, right?
- 36:00But Dan, you're, you're suspiciously quiet.
- 36:03Well, I'm just wondering if we cancel because Lindsay and I,
- 36:05for your birthday, we're going to bring him in for the GT4.
- 36:09I know. Fortunately, that is not on his
- 36:11list. Do we?
- 36:13I think we're still within the cancellation.
- 36:14Period. We can.
- 36:16Yeah. I think we're good.
- 36:18The best 50th birthday prison ever.
- 36:20He doesn't mind. Yeah, a heart attack.
- 36:24And we're just, yeah, yeah, go out in the best way possible.
- 36:27You're in the garage. Yeah.
- 36:29Right, right. Yeah.
- 36:30I was just thinking when you were telling the story about
- 36:32the, the Ferris wheel at Lamar, like, you know, if you were
- 36:34gonna, you know, fall from a great height, you know, there,
- 36:36that's that's the place to. If this is how it is, if it's
- 36:39the Ferris wheel at Lamar, you could do a lot worse, yeah.
- 36:42I I mean, I'm trying to think there's really he's got no
- 36:45competitors, right, Because but this is like, I don't know, have
- 36:50you ever seen like a limo conversion like back in the days
- 36:53when they would limos aren't really those cars don't exist to
- 36:55convert really anymore so much. But when they used to convert
- 36:58like a Town Car or a Cadillac and basically would cut the
- 37:01thing in half and they just Weld some like, you know, 3 feet more
- 37:05frame or whatever and then just slop together.
- 37:07And it's just I think those are were built with much more care
- 37:10and precision than these things. And I just, I want to know.
- 37:13So I know we have a friend of the show who's got one.
- 37:15Like what's this thing three years later?
- 37:17Like, like, yeah, that's a good question.
- 37:19Are the pieces. Why do we think?
- 37:20I mean, because again, I kind of go back to, I think it's people
- 37:25that have pretty extensive collections.
- 37:27Yeah, is my sentence. Because it is, I think part of
- 37:31having it is the experience of having him come and do his thing
- 37:35in front of you and getting to have like sort of the
- 37:37comprehensive. Experience.
- 37:38Yeah, Yeah. But I don't think our friend,
- 37:41actually, I think he bought it once it'd been done.
- 37:45The reason he's got his, one of the reasons is that he does a
- 37:49lot of work for charity and I'll kids sick kids, right?
- 37:53And they love the visuals of that.
- 37:54Car. There you go.
- 37:56They actually love it so. But he's also got a singer,
- 37:58right? So right.
- 38:00I think we need to ask Eric to come on the show.
- 38:02Yeah, yeah, I think he'd be fun anyway to have on and but I do
- 38:06have to wonder like what are what's the resale on those?
- 38:08Because if you're starting with a car that's say A50 or $60,000,
- 38:11you know, 964993 or not, it wouldn't be a 993, but like A996
- 38:16or something, right. I mean, assume you're starting
- 38:18with a car that isn't perfect, right?
- 38:19You're probably starting with a car that you're a little more OK
- 38:22with cutting into with the Sawzall right?
- 38:25Like if the car is a $50,000 car and he you know, he's $30,000 to
- 38:30fly here from Japan and and you know, yeah.
- 38:32Is that an $80,000 car at the end?
- 38:33Is it a $180,000 car or is it a $30,000 car?
- 38:37Like how does that how does that translate?
- 38:39And I. Think you're going to have
- 38:40another heart attack, Ryan? Because these cars go up
- 38:43significantly in value like like hundred 200,000.
- 38:48Really. They're greater than the sum of
- 38:50their parts, huh? Yeah.
- 38:52Well, because it's so polarizing, like we've
- 38:55demonstrated, like love them or hate them, people have strong
- 38:59opinions and the people that like them really like him.
- 39:01Yeah, yeah, well, he's booked out for at least a year, so you
- 39:06won't be able to hire him in time for my 50th.
- 39:08Well, he's going to have an opening at your.
- 39:10Birthday. Apparently.
- 39:12Suddenly there's a window. Yeah, exactly.
- 39:14Could you like, do you have it in you to sit down with like a,
- 39:17with like a, you know, a torch or you know, a saw and like cut
- 39:21into something like that just like, because he doesn't like,
- 39:24you know, he doesn't draw anything out.
- 39:26He just sits down and starts cutting.
- 39:27So sometimes they're asymmetrical.
- 39:29It's like. I don't think.
- 39:31Physically, my arm could lift that to the, you know, to the
- 39:34sheet metal and I don't. Know I feel like it's kind of
- 39:38it's the same idea of like some people buy plates just to break
- 39:42them. I think there was something like
- 39:45I feel like. Where are these people?
- 39:48The Greeks the. Genius as well you must be.
- 39:50On. They're like rules schmools.
- 39:53I better. Throw.
- 39:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think there could be something
- 39:56freeing about it because you're taking out the preciousness.
- 39:59Yes, yes. And you're going.
- 40:01I'm going to do what I want and make this piece of art,
- 40:04basically. Yeah, that I can get in and
- 40:06drive if I want. But yeah, I mean, it's like
- 40:10you're you're giving. He's giving himself permission
- 40:13to do what he likes. And it's resonated with people
- 40:17more. People than just him.
- 40:20And I don't know, I mean, I think there's something cool
- 40:22about that. Just going like, hey, this is
- 40:24what I feel moved to do and I'm not going to go like, well, I
- 40:26can't. This is too important.
- 40:28Like, you know. More fun than banana duct tape
- 40:30to a canvas, right? Exactly.
- 40:32And I would argue that he's been influential, right?
- 40:34That he's, you know, that other people are sort of aping his
- 40:37style and and, you know, I just, maybe I'm just jealous.
- 40:40Maybe I want to be that cool. Maybe I want to wear my pajamas
- 40:42and fly the world with a cigarette in my mouth.
- 40:45It's just you questioning. All in my places.
- 40:47And you're like, had I known that being flown around the
- 40:50world in my PJ's was an option, I would have made some
- 40:52different. Choices fine, Ryan up.
- 40:57No, go ahead, Dan. I was just going to say I think
- 40:59his cars actually appear in some video games.
- 41:02Oh, really? That's another element of with
- 41:06the, Yeah, yeah. I mean, and big kids who still
- 41:09play video games too, obviously. Yeah, but I went to art school.
- 41:13I think I'm the only one on this this show that went to art
- 41:15school. And that was always the
- 41:16question, like, how do you make it bigger, right?
- 41:18You gotta, you gotta have to add that shock value.
- 41:20You have to do something that no one else has done right, And
- 41:24it's worth, you know what people will pay for it, right, your
- 41:26artwork. And so I, I maybe that's the way
- 41:28to look at it. You know, that this is, he's a
- 41:30performance artist. This is art.
- 41:32You know that, that it's, it's, I'm looking at it through the
- 41:34wrong lens, you know, and it wouldn't be the IT wouldn't.
- 41:39But of course I'm bothered by these people that like, you
- 41:41know, cut a car in half and put it on the wall too.
- 41:43Like there's something I I assign way too much like I don't
- 41:46humanity to these. Well, yeah, Well, now, OK.
- 41:50So let me offer a counterpoint to your perspective on that
- 41:53being done. So one of the cars that I
- 41:56learned to drive in was an 85 Bronco, as I have never
- 42:00mentioned before on the show. And when that car started to
- 42:04have like consistent problems to the point that really my dad was
- 42:08the only one that could drive it, we all sat around and none
- 42:13of us wanted to let the car go because that had been the car
- 42:17the bulk of mine and my siblings childhood, like all the family
- 42:20Rd. trips were in that car. We had all learned to drive in
- 42:23that car that had, it was my grandfather's car before we had
- 42:28it. So, so much history.
- 42:30And we were looking at it and my parents have like a blank like
- 42:33the back of the garage wall in the backyard.
- 42:35And we went, what if we cut the car off behind the front I know
- 42:41and mounted it to the wall and put a BBQ where the engine goes.
- 42:46Well. That's very SoCal of you.
- 42:49Up until that point, I was going to say it's like the old
- 42:51Labrador that you make a decision on whether to put it
- 42:53down or not, but you don't stuff it and put it on the wall, do
- 42:56you? Some people do.
- 42:58But you know what's hilarious? So that was and the car ended up
- 43:01being donated in 2005. So it's been 20 years at this
- 43:05point and my dad still says we should have done it.
- 43:09Now everyone wants him and they're paying up, you know, for
- 43:12these things. I know.
- 43:13Did you ever? Had our own Bronco BBQ.
- 43:16Do you ever have the show Wonder Years in the UK, Dan?
- 43:19Yes, with. French Savage, yes, and there
- 43:21was this. It's been years since I've seen
- 43:23this thing, but there was this wonderful episode where the
- 43:26whole family, they have a station wagon that they've had,
- 43:28they've all grown up in. Oh yeah.
- 43:29After 20 years, it's a Sunday Every, the whole family gets
- 43:32together, washes it, you know, that cleans it.
- 43:34They take it to the car dealership and the car
- 43:36dealership wants to give them like pennies on, you know, the
- 43:38dollar of what they think it's worth.
- 43:39And they end up keeping it, you know.
- 43:40Yeah. It's just, you know, that's
- 43:42there's a lot of whatever wrapped up in these, these
- 43:45inanimate objects, you know, and, and it's, I guess some of
- 43:48us are easier or have an easier time of making that separation
- 43:53then. Yeah, no, they, they definitely
- 43:58certain ones sort of worm their way into our hearts.
- 44:00They do. They do.
- 44:01Family and yeah, but it's interesting, Dan, that you said
- 44:05the part of the reason that our friend of the show has an RWB is
- 44:09because it resonates with kids. Because my only real experience
- 44:13with RWB was when my daughter and my dad and I got to go up
- 44:16and tour the part of the Galpin collection that's at GAS a
- 44:21couple years ago. And they have a nice shop and
- 44:25you can get basically like souvenirs and gas merch and that
- 44:28kind of stuff. And I told my daughter she could
- 44:30pick something and she chose a, an RC car that was a purple RWB
- 44:36Porsche. Wow.
- 44:38And so it again, resonated with her.
- 44:41There's something about it that definitely resonates with kids,
- 44:43which is interesting. And our friend of the show, you
- 44:46know you're willing to let us drive it.
- 44:48Maybe that's what we need to. There's a there's a magazine
- 44:51article in that, isn't there? Right.
- 44:53Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think there is.
- 44:54And you know what and and just to to pile on then we can move
- 44:57on. I guess it really depends
- 44:59heavily more heavily than usually than than it usually
- 45:02would on on the donor car, right.
- 45:04You know, if you start out with something, start with a 930
- 45:06turbo, it's going to be more exciting car rate maybe than
- 45:08than something else. But.
- 45:11Can I give a shout out, please? I wanted to give a shout out to
- 45:14Ryan Carl Media on Instagram. Yeah, because he gave us some
- 45:17really nice feedback and he basically said he loves
- 45:20listening to the show and, and I had to check he was talking
- 45:24about our show and he was. So yeah, Ryan, thank you and
- 45:28thanks for listening. Yeah, thanks man.
- 45:29Appreciate that. Yeah, yeah, he he does a, a
- 45:32great, I don't know what you want to call like a newsletter
- 45:35about cars and post it to Instagram and where he focuses
- 45:39on a a singular model and had a couple of discussions with him
- 45:42offline about just just cool cars and stuff.
- 45:46So I don't know. What do you know where Ryan is?
- 45:49He last time we chatted he'd been to Europe, so I don't know
- 45:52where he, I can't remember where he's based, but I know he's been
- 45:54to Europe. Can we play?
- 45:56Let's wind up Jorge for the next 5 minutes.
- 45:59I think I know what you're going to get at here, Dan.
- 46:01What could you possibly be working up to?
- 46:04Our friend Jorge Aquino of Tormenting Tarmac sent us a text
- 46:08and basically said, guys, if you talk about the new Corvette this
- 46:12week, I want in. I've got an opinion.
- 46:15This of course is the. Is it the ZR1?
- 46:19X ZR1X, which is a tribute to the father of the Corvette,
- 46:23which is Zora. So this is an all-wheel drive
- 46:28monster. It does notice 60 in under 2
- 46:32seconds. And I'm kind of thinking what's
- 46:35the point to be quite frank, because you know, they've
- 46:39already got the ZR1, which is super quick and you know, and
- 46:42all the rest. So obviously this is now
- 46:44all-wheel drive, which means it's even more, you know, stable
- 46:47on the roads and stuff. But it's like, does the world
- 46:50need another quick Corvette? Or does it need an all-wheel
- 46:54drive? One that feels.
- 46:55Very, it's a great one already. So the what's the name of the
- 46:59model? There's an electric the.
- 47:01E Ray. The E Ray thank you.
- 47:04So that is all-wheel drive already, but a pure ICE
- 47:07all-wheel drive is the new one. Well, I love that they're coming
- 47:11in so many flavors, right? Because I mean, even the
- 47:13standard Stingray is a very quick car right out-of-the-box,
- 47:17right? The 06 right there's the ZR1,
- 47:21you've got the E ray now you've got the ZR1 XI.
- 47:25Think it would have to be all-wheel drive with 12150
- 47:27horsepower And Dan sent me over a couple notes and I thought it
- 47:31says 12150 horsepower and sub 2 seconds zero to 16.
- 47:34I thought the next line was why isn't it faster?
- 47:37But you say you posit the question, why isn't it at Pikes
- 47:40Peak? Yeah.
- 47:42Because that would, I think, do quite well.
- 47:44Yeah, perfect. Pike's Peak car.
- 47:46I'm not sure if it's the perfect car for cars and coffee on a
- 47:48Sunday. Right, that is the ultimate
- 47:50Pike's Peak car. What?
- 47:51What do these things cost? They haven't announced it yet.
- 47:55OK, OK. But but the I think the ZR1 is
- 47:57like 145. Which is crazy.
- 48:00This is like this is supercar performance.
- 48:03Hypercar. Yeah.
- 48:04Or hyper. Well, that's what this new one
- 48:05will be. A hypercar, you know, performing
- 48:08car. So maybe we need to invite Jorge
- 48:11onto the show so he can show us the light, tell us why it's a
- 48:15cool car and why we should care about it.
- 48:17I think the problem with it was 117° in Phoenix today.
- 48:20I think it was into his head. Wow, I.
- 48:24Mean you can't argue with the the specs.
- 48:26Come on, you know. And and assumingly the price
- 48:29when it comes out. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:31I mean, you can't get a Porsche, you know, with that kind of
- 48:35horsepower at any price. You know, this is AGM.
- 48:38This is a Chevy. It's crazy.
- 48:41Yeah, that's, I don't know, I got nothing.
- 48:44Who is it for though? It's a good question.
- 48:48Track people, I guess it's got to be a track car, isn't it?
- 48:51But what track? Right.
- 48:53Yeah. I mean, that's so powerful.
- 48:56Like there's a lot of tracks that it would OverDrive, yeah.
- 49:00Yeah, and probably would be too noisy for as well.
- 49:03Yeah, we should be celebrating this.
- 49:04I mean, this is again golden would be what?
- 49:10I said, should we? Though I just hope they fall
- 49:13into the right hand. Oh hey, we need you.
- 49:15We need your help. Here we need you to be our
- 49:17Sherpa through this. I mean, he's welcome to make a
- 49:20case. I make no promises that I will
- 49:22change my mind. Skepticism.
- 49:25How would one of those be at the Bradford Racing School?
- 49:28Dan and. It'd begin on the drag strip.
- 49:30Yeah, yeah, it'd be so big on the drag strip.
- 49:33Yeah. Ultra cross?
- 49:34Not so much. It seems like it's so purpose
- 49:37built, which I guess you could argue about a lot of cars
- 49:40available these days, but just it seems like the number of
- 49:43people that could actually use it are so few.
- 49:46Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, Speaking of performancey
- 49:50things, the the new F-150 Lobo has been announced.
- 49:54Doesn't have 12150 horsepower, but has 400.
- 49:58Not bad. What do we like?
- 49:59Because you're, you know, this is kind of your, your zone.
- 50:03Lindsay, do you like these? I know I I'm going to plead.
- 50:07I was in France and I know nothing.
- 50:09About this Oh, you don't? OK.
- 50:11Did Jim not tell you you were thinking dogs out?
- 50:13We were too busy eating ice cream and watching very fast
- 50:16cars. I love that.
- 50:18Just the image of you sitting next to Jim Farley eating ice
- 50:21cream. It's it's it's it's.
- 50:24An Adam. Sandler Production You.
- 50:25Know, right? I love that image as well.
- 50:27Yeah, I'm a big fan. I could do it again this week.
- 50:31Right, right. But no, no real thoughts on
- 50:35this. So it's you know, it's what was
- 50:36the other one that came? It was at the Maverick Lobo.
- 50:39They did do, yeah. Yeah.
- 50:41But this is supposed to be like a historical successor to the
- 50:45Lightning. Yes, that's well, you're gonna
- 50:47have to go drive one and tell us which.
- 50:49Yeah, Lindsay, do some research and let us know what you think.
- 50:52Do we like the disc wheels? I saw a second Gen. lightning on
- 50:55the road the other day which is the.
- 50:57Second clear side. Yes, yeah, like step side or
- 51:00whatever. Yeah.
- 51:02Yeah, single cab, just like the first Gen.
- 51:05In red. In red were they?
- 51:06Were they all red? No, some were yellow, right?
- 51:09I don't know. I know a lot of them were red.
- 51:11Yeah. Yeah, First Gen. it was red and
- 51:13black. Yeah.
- 51:16And I think they made black ones second Gen. too, I think.
- 51:20But yeah, you don't see, especially that generation, you
- 51:22don't see very many of them. So definitely definitely turned
- 51:25my head when I saw it the other day.
- 51:28Well, you need to go investigate the new Lobo and get back to us,
- 51:30I think. I think Ford instead, now that
- 51:32you're buddies with Jim. Jim Prescar.
- 51:35I have the I have another show here, Friend of the show Travis
- 51:41Pastrana. What now?
- 51:45So Travis was involved with a Corvette and a jump.
- 51:50So Travis has got this, this place called Pastrana Land, and
- 51:56it's basically an adult playground for cars, bikes,
- 51:59canams, the whole lot. And he posted a video last week
- 52:02of Jim Duffy, who is a member of the Nitro Circus, which is
- 52:08Travis's group, and he jumped to Corvette C8 and managed to land
- 52:15it. And Jim is no stranger to
- 52:18jumping vehicles because he has the world record for limo
- 52:22jumping. Second, mention the limos
- 52:24tonight. Just.
- 52:24Say yeah, 3 for the the win, right?
- 52:28If you haven't seen it, The interesting thing for me is he
- 52:32only just makes it and he doesn't only just make it
- 52:35because he he lost confidence. The car actually stopped and the
- 52:41car cut off just before he's about to take off, so.
- 52:45So did Momentum launch him then? Yes, yeah.
- 52:50And he was, they've looked to the telemetry and everything and
- 52:53he didn't lift. So it was definitely a car
- 52:56feature. So they don't know why, but he
- 52:58made it. It's the good news and he's safe
- 53:00and well and everything else. But check out the video and
- 53:03Travis does some analysis on the video and.
- 53:06So what were they jumping it over?
- 53:08Just it was just two sets of mound, earth mound.
- 53:12From 1:00 to the. Other why are they called memo
- 53:14jumps? No, he, he, he's got the world
- 53:18record. Oh, and that's a separate thing,
- 53:19OK? Yeah, OK.
- 53:20He's got the world record for the the furthest you can jump a
- 53:23limo, and he did it. I see.
- 53:24OK. I thought he was jumping over
- 53:26the limos. Yeah, I see.
- 53:27I see. What kind of limo did he jump?
- 53:30We'll need to look it out and sorry, Jim York, we'll need to
- 53:33look it up and and come back to you.
- 53:35But it was interesting because I did some work with Duffy and
- 53:38York when they came to Dirtfish, so they actually went on a Co
- 53:44drivers course and yeah, so they actually competed in a round of
- 53:48the ARA. So the good guys, and I think by
- 53:52default they're friends of the show.
- 53:54Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I have if we need a
- 53:56third limo mention I have a story from.
- 53:58Here we go. Let's end on it because we're 55
- 54:01minutes, yeah. So when I was a freshman in high
- 54:04school, the winter formal dance was coming up and the group that
- 54:08I was going with, we were trying to figure out transportation.
- 54:11And, you know, limos were not cheap.
- 54:14And it turned out that one of my parents neighbors owned a limo.
- 54:19He's done a lot of cars for movies and that kind of thing.
- 54:21So he has a very interesting collection.
- 54:23And one of them was a Lincoln Town Car limo from the 80s.
- 54:29And so we called and asked if we could rent it from him.
- 54:32And long story. Just the car, not the car and
- 54:34driver car. OK.
- 54:37And he very generously loaned it to us, but my parents ended up
- 54:42being the limo driver. But did you make them wear the
- 54:45little hat? No, they did that on their own.
- 54:48Actually, yes. Black pants, white shirts, limo
- 54:53cap and yes, we had this brown Lincoln Town Car limo from the
- 54:5880s that was. Our chariot for the That's
- 55:00amazing. That's amazing.
- 55:01Was that because they wanted to be chaperones?
- 55:05As a parent myself, it's entirely possible.
- 55:07Didn't occur to me at the time. No.
- 55:09But grateful. Chauffeur, damn it.
- 55:13And like nothing like taking your parents to your.
- 55:17Dance. Do you have any limo experience?
- 55:20Not that I can share on this show that.
- 55:23Was until senior year, though, right, or whatever you call it
- 55:26in the Uki only have one limo experience that I can remember
- 55:29and that's when I was in college and we were all very excited.
- 55:32A group of my friends decided we're going to New York.
- 55:34We were living in Chicago at the time.
- 55:37A couple of friends I think of ours graduated and we're in New
- 55:40York. My sister was living in New York
- 55:41and so we probably flew whatever the equivalent of Spirit
- 55:44Airlines, you know, was at the time.
- 55:47But we, one of the girls in the, in the, the group had a part
- 55:50time job at a bank and they had a Christmas party.
- 55:53She won a free limo ride. It was one of these things,
- 55:55right? And it already seems a little
- 55:57suspicious. Not at all.
- 56:00So we gathered this apartment when this thing rolls up and I
- 56:03think it was like a funeral limo, right?
- 56:05Which is like a little different.
- 56:06It had 6 doors. It wasn't your typical, It was
- 56:09white, it had purple tint that was bubbling and it had a bullet
- 56:12hole in the back window. And I'll never forget that it it
- 56:16it. That's a nice touch.
- 56:18Yeah, put a it's like a wet blanket, you know, on the.
- 56:21Didn't have the the hearse swoop on it though.
- 56:25I don't know about that just. So maybe this was the limo that
- 56:30followed. Right, right, right.
- 56:31This is where the grieving family.
- 56:34It wasn't a wooden box. I think that would have been a
- 56:37hearse this was that may have been preferable, you know?
- 56:41Don't mind the bullet hole or the wooden box, Please see
- 56:44yourself. Yeah, and we're going to get the
- 56:45free limo the. Ice bucket is full.
- 56:48It's like when I was a kid and we Karate kid, the first Karate
- 56:51kid was in the movie theaters and, and in the lobby there was
- 56:54like the local Dojo set up a stand where you could win free
- 56:57karate glasses. And so of course, I send up two
- 57:00days later, I get this thing in the mail.
- 57:02You've won free karate classes, not realizing everyone wins free
- 57:05karate classes. So you know it's older and
- 57:09wiser, right? So.
- 57:10That's yeah. No, but that's you kind of have
- 57:12a little bit of the wondering. I never win anything.
- 57:15This is amazing. Dan McGinnis wins, wins things.
- 57:19That's true, except for our friend Dan McGinnis, who wins
- 57:21cards. Anyway.
- 57:23We've got some options for titles with this show so far.
- 57:26I've got a lot of visual rivets, Bronco barbecues.
- 57:33Yeah. Which sounds awful, right?
- 57:35Like you're grilling up a horse, right?
- 57:37Yeah, it's. Oh, and they do three karate
- 57:40lessons. And they do serve horse still in
- 57:45France. Absolutely.
- 57:46The French word for horse is cheval.
- 57:49So or Big Mac. Royale with cheese.
- 57:54Royale with the ball with cheese.
- 57:57Wow, yeah, you don't think about that.
- 57:59They do in Japan though too, so. They're yeah, they're France is
- 58:02not the only. One I just, yeah.

- 58:15menu. Don't worry, we got our own
- 58:17problems. Yeah, anyway, All right,
