- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to SEC football addiction sports talk. Jay on
- 0:04Speaker 1: with us, Tennessee and Auburn this week. We are presented
- 0:07Speaker 1: by prize picks. We're all new users who play a
- 0:09Speaker 1: $ 5 lineup and win get 150 in lineups. If they
- 0:12Speaker 1: use code HMA, Jay, I, before we talk about Auburn,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I talked about this a little bit on your show,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but Tennessee's defense came to play on Saturday and the
- 0:21Speaker 1: special teams did too. It was the offense that really struggled,
- 0:23Speaker 1: but through four games, one of them being against the
- 0:27Speaker 1: number one team in the country, You've got to feel
- 0:30Speaker 1: better about this defense than you did last year because
- 0:31Speaker 1: I knew you couldn't have felt much worse about it then.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Jim Knowles was obviously a really good hire. Coach Owings
- 0:39Speaker 2: obviously helped the team as well. It's a tougher team.
- 0:42Speaker 2: That was one thing. I was like, they're going to
- 0:45Speaker 2: pack this in in the second half. I felt that
- 0:48Speaker 2: because Texas was kind of leaning on us so big
- 0:51Speaker 2: time on defense. Our inability to move the ball, it
- 0:54Speaker 2: was only a matter of time before the defense got tired.
- 0:56Speaker 3: But they didn't quit.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Now, part of that was probably having 100,000 people with
- 1:01Speaker 2: the wind at their back. But the other part was
- 1:03Speaker 2: a really well-coached defense that they put so many weird
- 1:08Speaker 2: things on Arch Manning. He didn't know what was coming
- 1:11Speaker 2: and going.
- 1:12Speaker 3: He did not.
- 1:13Speaker 2: We were blitzing from all different angles. And that team,
- 1:17Speaker 2: we squared up against their offensive line in a major way.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's what kept them in it, right?
- 1:23Speaker 4: The punt return was big, obviously. You guys got it
- 1:26Speaker 4: from special.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Teams, too.
- 1:27Speaker 4: If the defense... I thought the defense played a.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:31Speaker 4: I know that last drive. Well, not the last drive,
- 1:33Speaker 4: but the drive that they had that.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Put them up 10, it just felt like the defense
- 1:38Speaker 1: was worn down there. But even after that, with five
- 1:40Speaker 1: minutes to go, they went out and got another stop,
- 1:42Speaker 1: or three minutes to go. They went out and got
- 1:44Speaker 1: another stop, where they could have very easily just packed
- 1:47Speaker 1: it in. I'll tell you, if the defense... would have played, like,
- 1:50Speaker 1: I thought they played an A type of game defensively.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And if they would have played like a C game
- 1:57Speaker 1: or a B game, Texas would have scored 30 points.
- 2:00Speaker 4: And so, yeah, I was very impressed with that.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And I think that'll help them throughout the rest of
- 2:04Speaker 1: this year as the offense tries to figure things out
- 2:07Speaker 1: with the freshman quarterback.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's, like I say, the big thing about this.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And we talked about this earlier.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's just When you go in with a true freshman,
- 2:17Speaker 2: I don't care if it's Peyton Manning, it could be
- 2:21Speaker 2: the greatest quarterback that Tennessee's ever known or FSU or
- 2:24Speaker 2: anybody else.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It's a big risk.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I don't care how talented the person is. It normally
- 2:29Speaker 2: takes two to three years of college play.
- 2:33Speaker 3: To get used to it.
- 2:34Speaker 2: That's what I've heard every expert discuss. And it's so
- 2:38Speaker 2: rare for the– who was the guy that played for
- 2:40Speaker 2: Clemson that came out that first year and they won
- 2:42Speaker 2: the national title?
- 2:44Speaker 3: Oh, Lawrence– Yeah, yeah, Lawrence.
- 2:47Speaker 2: He's the only one that I've ever seen come out
- 2:49Speaker 2: and really just like fished the water and just knew
- 2:53Speaker 2: exactly what to do.
- 2:54Speaker 3: That was so rare.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Typically, that does not happen, but here's the thing. This
- 2:59Speaker 2: offense should help him, and he's not going to face
- 3:01Speaker 2: that first round draft pick at every position. I watched
- 3:05Speaker 2: the film guy after the Tennessee, and he broke it down,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and it it almost made me sick watching it.
- 3:12Speaker 3: It was like, what can he do?
- 3:13Speaker 2: What can anybody do? Because we couldn't move their tackles.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We double teamed the guy a couple of times and
- 3:21Speaker 2: he didn't move. He just leaned into us and then
- 3:24Speaker 2: pushed him away and made the tackle. And I'm going,
- 3:27Speaker 2: a double team you couldn't push him? And they had
- 3:30Speaker 2: four dudes like that up there. And the film guy
- 3:34Speaker 2: kept going, that's first round pick. That's first round pick.
- 3:37Speaker 2: That's probably second round pick. And I'm going, That's $ 47. 5
- 3:40Speaker 2: million is what that is. Let's just know what that is.
- 3:45Speaker 2: That is stacking up cordwood of talent at $ 1 and
- 3:49Speaker 2: $ 2 million apiece.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Tennessee fans, do me a favor just really quickly. Make
- 3:54Speaker 1: sure you are subscribed to our audio podcast. I'm going
- 3:57Speaker 1: to link it in the description. You can listen on
- 3:59Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, wherever. Spreaker is the best one if
- 4:02Speaker 1: you can download that app, but I'm not going to
- 4:04Speaker 1: ask you to download an extra app. Just wherever you
- 4:06Speaker 1: are subscribed, to audio podcasts, make sure you add sec
- 4:10Speaker 1: football addiction to that list.
- 4:11Speaker 4: All right, back to Jay.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And you look at, you know, there's certainly like traps
- 4:16Speaker 1: on Tennessee schedule and we'll talk about Auburn here in
- 4:18Speaker 1: a second, but like they've got an opera, they're not
- 4:20Speaker 1: going to face a defensive line like they just saw.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And there's not another one in the country to be
- 4:24Speaker 1: fair with you.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Georgia's got a good one. You don't play them, but
- 4:27Speaker 4: the Auburn doesn't have that.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Arkansas didn't have that. Alabama's good, but they don't have that.
- 4:31Speaker 1: South Carolina certainly doesn't. Kentucky doesn't. A & M doesn't.
- 4:34Speaker 4: LSU's got a good defensive line. Vandy doesn't. So like,
- 4:38Speaker 4: I do think it sets up well. Now, you're going
- 4:40Speaker 4: to have to do other things well.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I'm not just listing off all those as wins or
- 4:43Speaker 1: short things, but in this Auburn matchup, how much does
- 4:47Speaker 1: Byron Brown scare you? I kind of gave you my
- 4:49Speaker 1: take on him over on your channel, so if you
- 4:51Speaker 1: guys haven't watched Sports Talk Jay's video, go over to
- 4:53Speaker 1: his channel and do that too, but just thoughts around
- 4:55Speaker 1: him and that offense.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think he's a guy who can hurt you, and
- 4:59Speaker 2: he's a guy that can hurt himself and hurt his team.
- 5:02Speaker 2: He's very much a double-edged sword, and he's going to
- 5:06Speaker 2: do some Fantastic things where you go, man, that guy
- 5:08Speaker 2: looks like an all-pro, and then he's going to make
- 5:10Speaker 2: some boneheaded moves that create turnovers. You go, what in
- 5:15Speaker 2: the world was that guy thinking? He reminds me a
- 5:16Speaker 2: lot of your quarterback in Ashton Daniels, a guy that's
- 5:20Speaker 2: got a lot of talent and doesn't seem to put
- 5:23Speaker 2: it all together half the time.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 4: People ask me about that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Ashton, you know, if I had told you that Ashton
- 5:29Speaker 1: Daniels was going to go into Bryant-Denny Stadium and throw
- 5:31Speaker 1: for 377 yards, you'd say, whoa.
- 5:34Speaker 4: That that's pretty good.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But if I'd also told you they had three picks,
- 5:37Speaker 1: he just said, Oh, that sounds, sounds more like, so
- 5:39Speaker 1: like you got, sometimes you gotta take the good with
- 5:41Speaker 1: the bad. He is dynamic with his legs too. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: he's a big kid that can, you know, run people
- 5:46Speaker 1: over at times. Now I'd like to see him in
- 5:48Speaker 1: the hole with Aaron Carter and see what ends up
- 5:50Speaker 1: happening there. But, uh, welcome to the, uh, welcome to
- 5:53Speaker 1: the sec if so. But, um, do you think against
- 5:57Speaker 1: a defense that's not quite as good or not, not
- 6:01Speaker 1: quite as good, not even close to as good, uh,
- 6:04Speaker 1: as Texas's was, you know, this Auburn team gave up.
- 6:08Speaker 1: What did they give up to Florida? 44 points. You
- 6:11Speaker 1: think the offense can find a little more success in
- 6:13Speaker 1: this game?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we'll be able to run the ball,
- 6:16Speaker 2: which is very important. If we don't run the ball,
- 6:19Speaker 2: we don't play well. That's every single time in a
- 6:23Speaker 2: hypo offense. You've got to be able to at least
- 6:25Speaker 2: get 150 yards on the ground. And if you're at 50, 60, 70, no,
- 6:30Speaker 2: you're probably going to lose that game. And that's very important.
- 6:34Speaker 2: And I think we'll be able to run the ball
- 6:35Speaker 2: some against Auburn. I think we'll get a decent amount.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's not going to be like we did against Georgia
- 6:40Speaker 2: Tech where we just ran over them.
- 6:42Speaker 3: That won't happen. But I think we'll get 150.
- 6:44Speaker 2: And that'll give enough time for our quarterback to have
- 6:49Speaker 2: at least three seconds. And that extra second and not
- 6:52Speaker 2: swiveling your head around because you know somebody's getting ready
- 6:55Speaker 2: to take your head off, that'll help a lot. And
- 6:57Speaker 2: I'm not saying Auburn's defensive line is a piece of
- 7:00Speaker 2: cake or anything because they're absolutely not But it's not
- 7:03Speaker 2: going to be a fire rate every single time either.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Thankful that it's not the Texas defensive lineup there.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Florida had just under, if not for kneel downs
- 7:13Speaker 1: and a reverse that didn't go anywhere, Florida had 250
- 7:16Speaker 1: yards of rushing against them. Jaden Ball went for 163,
- 7:20Speaker 1: which he is absolutely spectacular, and he's a different kind
- 7:23Speaker 1: of animal when it comes to being able to run
- 7:26Speaker 1: the ball. But they were very, I don't know what
- 7:30Speaker 1: to word you, complimentary. They had 250 yards passing. They
- 7:34Speaker 1: had 250 yards rushing as a team. They were very
- 7:37Speaker 1: even on that, Florida was, and Auburn struggled with that,
- 7:40Speaker 1: not knowing whether the run or the pass was coming.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I think Tennessee, the big question I have for you,
- 7:47Speaker 1: as good as Texas' offensive line, or I'm sorry, defensive
- 7:50Speaker 1: line was, you guys had a couple of guys, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: I didn't notice because I don't know the roster, obviously,
- 7:54Speaker 1: as well as you do. The guys that went out
- 7:57Speaker 1: for the O-line, did they come back in, or is
- 7:59Speaker 1: there an injury update on them for this week?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Mo, who is our guard, we'll see how that comes.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I don't know if he's going to play or not.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That really hurt us because our replacement wasn't very good
- 8:11Speaker 2: in that situation. It's hard to say. We won't know
- 8:15Speaker 2: for sure until tomorrow. We'll get our first injury report. And,
- 8:19Speaker 2: of course, then it'll change on Thursday and Friday. But
- 8:22Speaker 2: at least Wednesday we'll have a clue.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Will Josh put everybody as doubtful and then the next
- 8:28Speaker 1: day put them all as questionable and then the next
- 8:30Speaker 1: day put them all as probable and the next day
- 8:32Speaker 1: they're not even on the report on Saturday?
- 8:34Speaker 2: It won't be Lane-esque, but he does not like to
- 8:39Speaker 2: give out information unless he absolutely has to. He's going
- 8:42Speaker 2: to be very mum on it. So whatever's on there
- 8:45Speaker 2: will probably be somewhat accurate. I don't think he's going
- 8:48Speaker 2: to play a ton of games with it, but he
- 8:50Speaker 2: also is not going to tip his hand.
- 8:51Speaker 3: At all on anything.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Now, the injuries matter, but.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Does the offensive line worry you after that Texas game,
- 9:03Speaker 1: injuries aside, or is Texas just that good to where
- 9:06Speaker 1: you think this is still going to be a good
- 9:07Speaker 1: offensive line this year?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Or what were your thoughts on that?
- 9:11Speaker 2: You know, going into this, a lot of the experts
- 9:14Speaker 2: around Knoxville, Tennessee, the sports source to being one of them,
- 9:19Speaker 2: they were like, this offensive line concerns me. And, of course,
- 9:22Speaker 2: I was watching them get 290 yards a game and
- 9:24Speaker 2: running and going, well, maybe they're just being too nitpicky.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And then we go up against Texas and it just–
- 9:30Speaker 3: it's wide open.
- 9:31Speaker 2: It's like, okay, even– look, even David Sanders, who I
- 9:34Speaker 2: think is one of the best tackles in the country.
- 9:37Speaker 3: He was uncomfortable.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Even he got showed up a couple of times where
- 9:40Speaker 2: a guy just stripped his arms down and went right
- 9:41Speaker 2: around him. And Sanders was like, nobody does that.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Nobody.
- 9:47Speaker 2: And that guy did. He just took his hands and said, nope.
- 9:51Speaker 2: And then went right around him and sacked our guy. And,
- 9:53Speaker 2: you know, our quarterback's going, man, I need more than
- 9:55Speaker 2: two seconds, guys. Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 3: So, you know, I don't think there'll be anybody that
- 9:59Speaker 3: can do that.
- 10:00Speaker 2: To Sanders with Auburn. But, again, that's– they'll get– here's
- 10:04Speaker 2: the thing. They're going to make– every team is going
- 10:06Speaker 2: to make Faison beat Tennessee.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yeah. That's what they're going to do. Before– Beat them.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Some good games this weekend. Can Mississippi State stay hot
- 10:18Speaker 1: welcoming in Alabama this weekend? Kamario Taylor has been like
- 10:20Speaker 1: the story of the conference so far.
- 10:23Speaker 3: He's fun. I think Alabama will handle them.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I would watch that game, but TJ, I can't handle
- 10:30Speaker 2: the cowbell thing.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I can't handle it.
- 10:34Speaker 1: What's worse, the cowbell? Okay, here's a good one. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: didn't know we'd get to do this. What's worse, the
- 10:39Speaker 1: cowbell or Florida being good again?
- 10:44Speaker 2: Here's how I would list the most annoying things. Florida
- 10:47Speaker 2: being good again. Number two is the cowbell. Number three is....
- 10:56Speaker 1: Well, you better buckle up, because when we come to
- 10:58Speaker 1: your stadium in five years.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Oh, dude, I can't even believe it. I was watching
- 11:02Speaker 3: you guys the other day, and I was like, are
- 11:04Speaker 3: they going to do this every time? I forgot how
- 11:07Speaker 3: much they do the chop.
- 11:08Speaker 4: You should see how.
- 11:09Speaker 1: You can't see it because the screen cuts off, but
- 11:10Speaker 1: I'm ripped on the right side. Left side, not so much,
- 11:14Speaker 1: but it's a good calisthenic. Can Iowa take down Ohio
- 11:19Speaker 1: State this weekend?
- 11:22Speaker 3: No, absolutely not.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Florida has lost three of the last four at Missouri.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Can Drinkowitz do us one more solid or do they
- 11:32Speaker 1: just keep that train rolling?
- 11:34Speaker 2: I don't know what to think of Florida right now.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I'm kind of in shock. I did not expect this
- 11:38Speaker 2: to happen so quickly.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Not this fast.
- 11:41Speaker 3: I know. It's like, dang, at.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Least give me a season to prepare. And they go like,
- 11:46Speaker 2: you know, seven and five, eight and four, something like that.
- 11:49Speaker 2: and you think, okay, now I need to be worried.
- 11:52Speaker 2: But if they come in here and go 10-2, 11-1,
- 11:54Speaker 2: or something like that, that's obnoxious.
- 11:59Speaker 4: I think they beat Missouri.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I do too.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I think they're better.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I know that they kind of trip up at times
- 12:06Speaker 1: up there, but I think they win that. Tennessee-Auburn, how
- 12:10Speaker 1: much does Tennessee win by?
- 12:13Speaker 2: I like the seven points. It feels like 24-17. 27-20
- 12:18Speaker 2: type of game to me. I don't think we'll score
- 12:21Speaker 2: a ton. I think we'll score enough. And they'll get
- 12:25Speaker 2: some points on the board against us. I like them
- 12:27Speaker 2: scoring 20, us scoring 27.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I'm interested to see, we've seen this for a couple
- 12:33Speaker 1: of different teams in different spots. LSU goes on the
- 12:36Speaker 1: road to Ole Miss, loses a game that they were
- 12:40Speaker 1: in right at the end and then blow it against
- 12:42Speaker 1: a team that they really wanted to beat for their coach.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And then they came back and the next week just
- 12:47Speaker 1: demolished Texas A & M.
- 12:49Speaker 4: We've seen teams rebound.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Auburn did it. After losing to Florida, they go and
- 12:53Speaker 1: beat Vandy. I am very interested to see how Tennessee
- 12:58Speaker 1: responds to this. I want to know, because I do
- 13:01Speaker 1: think that defense is really good. I think the offense
- 13:03Speaker 1: is going to have a better day than it did
- 13:05Speaker 1: last week. But I don't want the one loss to
- 13:07Speaker 1: turn into two. I really want to see Tennessee come
- 13:10Speaker 1: out and respond. I think it's really easy. not to
- 13:15Speaker 1: take anything away from Tennessee's performance, but I think it's
- 13:17Speaker 1: really easy to get up for games when it's the
- 13:21Speaker 1: number one team in the country, when the president's in town,
- 13:24Speaker 1: when they've been drinking beers and eating jelly since 10 a.m.
- 13:28Speaker 4: In the stands. I think all of.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I don't want to say that playing football is easy.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I think it's easy to get your emotions up and
- 13:34Speaker 1: rise up for that game. Do you play with the
- 13:37Speaker 1: same intensity when an Auburn comes to town? Which, I
- 13:39Speaker 1: know that Auburn's still an SEC opponent. They're 3-1, just
- 13:42Speaker 1: like you are. But it's not... it's not the game
- 13:45Speaker 1: day is not there. It's not the same popping circumstance.
- 13:47Speaker 1: The whole nation's not talking about you this week. So
- 13:50Speaker 1: can you still get up and play? Cause if they
- 13:53Speaker 1: play with the intensity, especially defensively, I know the offense
- 13:57Speaker 1: was kind of lackluster, but if they play with that
- 13:59Speaker 1: kind of intensity defensively, Auburn will score more than 13
- 14:02Speaker 1: like that, you know, but that would be my question is,
- 14:05Speaker 1: do you let it drop off just a bit?
- 14:07Speaker 4: Is it, does your foot off the gas?
- 14:09Speaker 1: If Tennessee plays the way that they did, at least
- 14:11Speaker 1: with an effort standpoint, They need to execute better offensively.
- 14:15Speaker 4: They'll be just fine in this game. That's my big
- 14:16Speaker 4: thought for the Vols this weekend.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a 3-30 game.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I would prefer a 7, but 3-30 is nice.
- 14:23Speaker 3: They'll be ready. The fans will be ready. They like
- 14:25Speaker 3: this team.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Appreciate you, Jay. Appreciate our friends over at PrizePix.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Again, all new users who play a $ 5 lineup and
- 14:33Speaker 1: win get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they use code HMA.
- 14:37Speaker 4: We'll see you next time on SEC Football Addiction.
