- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on, everybody, It's Jeff.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I wanted to let you know we recorded this podcast
- 0:03Speaker 2: episode on Wednesday, October two, twenty twenty four, so by
- 0:07Speaker 2: the time you hear this, some things may have changed
- 0:09Speaker 2: here or there, but we hope you enjoy the show.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:47Speaker 2: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, eleven
- 0:51Speaker 2: years strong, actually eleven and a half years strong, if
- 0:54Speaker 2: we're being honest.
- 0:55Speaker 1: At this point, we got.
- 0:56Speaker 2: A great discussion coming your way with regard to the
- 0:59Speaker 2: world Philly sports and beyond as well. We're certainly gonna
- 1:04Speaker 2: be getting into what Pete Rose meant to us in
- 1:07Speaker 2: the game of baseball after his passing.
- 1:09Speaker 1: This past week got a ton of Eagles talk.
- 1:11Speaker 2: We're gonna be getting into being us, some listener feedback
- 1:13Speaker 2: to dive into. Then we're gonna get into some Flyers talk,
- 1:16Speaker 2: specifically with that that babe Mitchkoff continuing to shine in
- 1:19Speaker 2: the preseason. And then we got a new top three list,
- 1:22Speaker 2: the top three things we're gonna be looking for during
- 1:25Speaker 2: this Phillies postseason run. And since this is our Phillies
- 1:29Speaker 2: postseason preview show, we are going to have Eric Moritelli
- 1:34Speaker 2: from that balls out of here dot com. He's gonna
- 1:37Speaker 2: be joining us to dive into this Phillies team a
- 1:40Speaker 2: little bit more after Len and I get done talking
- 1:42Speaker 2: about him. Yes, Len's with us. I'm Jeff Warren, Mere
- 1:45Speaker 2: Len Hunsicker. How you doing, buddy? All right, Len's got COVID, folks,
- 1:53Speaker 2: bless his soul, hooray.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Not feeling too well? How buddy?
- 2:00Speaker 3: Expect that you asked that.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I know, I'm so used to doing it after eleven
- 2:03Speaker 2: and a half years. All right, how you doing?
- 2:06Speaker 1: It's like and.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Exactly why don't you go f yourself?
- 2:13Speaker 1: You got to do this ship? You don't have to
- 2:14Speaker 1: do it.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But like you're doing it with COVID, you sound stuffed up.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You sound stuffy.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I mean it kind of feels like more in my
- 2:22Speaker 3: chest at this point, like a couple of days ago.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I mean, I just like I just tested last night
- 2:30Speaker 3: or yeah, like last night and that's when I got
- 2:33Speaker 3: the positive test. But I had felt sick for a
- 2:34Speaker 3: couple of days before and that was there was a
- 2:36Speaker 3: lot of like nasal congestion then. So I mean I've
- 2:38Speaker 3: probably had it for a couple of days now, just
- 2:41Speaker 3: realized last night. But yeah, so yeah, it is what
- 2:46Speaker 3: it is. Nothing you can really do.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It's going around, sure is, and I got it.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Well, at least, you know what, at least you had
- 2:56Speaker 2: your vaccine.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'll tell you that. You know you're you're vaxed with.
- 2:59Speaker 3: It, right, Well, yeah, I mean yeah, I have that.
- 3:04Speaker 3: And you know I did it like the booster thing
- 3:07Speaker 3: one or two times. I haven't done.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Anything like over a year.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I don't know. Yeah, if it matters now at this
- 3:11Speaker 3: point or whatever, who knows.
- 3:13Speaker 2: My physician actually said it didn't matter. And this was
- 3:15Speaker 2: like last December. She's like, you are good. She's like,
- 3:18Speaker 2: you had it before, before you were vaccinated, then you
- 3:21Speaker 2: had the vaccine, then you had the booster. She's like,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you're gonna be good. She's like, you're gonna be fine.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So and so far, so good.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, apparently it doesn't apply in all cases. I
- 3:34Speaker 3: guess not, but I mean, yeah, you can still get it.
- 3:39Speaker 3: It just you know, I don't know. Whatever.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, I hope you feel better, buddy, I hope you
- 3:44Speaker 2: feel better. You know he's not feeling good right now.
- 3:46Speaker 3: It's Pete Rose, and he is one person I can
- 3:50Speaker 3: definitely say I'm doing better than that.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You are doing better than Pete Rose.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Honestly, when I got the news, we all got the
- 3:56Speaker 2: news this past week, just to get into this segment
- 3:58Speaker 2: to start the show, folks, there was part of me
- 4:01Speaker 2: that was sad and just because he didn't get a
- 4:05Speaker 2: chance to see himself get into the Hall of Fame.
- 4:07Speaker 2: If he ever does get into the Hall of Fame,
- 4:09Speaker 2: I have a feeling that at some point down the road,
- 4:11Speaker 2: because he has now gone, that it likely will happen.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But you know, like thinking about him and of course
- 4:18Speaker 2: what he've been to the game of baseball, like I
- 4:20Speaker 2: was thinking about it in the context len of like,
- 4:22Speaker 2: like there's Pete Rose the person, and then Pete Rose
- 4:26Speaker 2: the baseball player. I think the person, Pete Rose the person,
- 4:33Speaker 2: he's an easily forgettable type of guy. You know, he remained,
- 4:37Speaker 2: frankly a degenerate gambler to his dying day. There's no
- 4:41Speaker 2: need to rehash all the other problems that he had.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Like the person easy to forget, but Pete Rose the
- 4:48Speaker 2: ballplayer should never ever ever be forgotten. You know, I
- 4:53Speaker 2: don't think we should let his what do you call
- 4:57Speaker 2: what should we called his sins? You know, the the
- 5:00Speaker 2: downtrodden ways of who he was personally, like rob us
- 5:07Speaker 2: of what he meant to a generation of baseball fans,
- 5:09Speaker 2: like what he meant to kids and teenagers back in
- 5:12Speaker 2: the sixties, seventies and eighties who didn't have that much
- 5:16Speaker 2: athletic ability. And Pete Rose basically told us, as he's
- 5:22Speaker 2: sliding into first base with like reckless abandon that you
- 5:26Speaker 2: know what, if you don't have great athletic ability, you
- 5:30Speaker 2: work hard, you play hard, you have the chance to
- 5:32Speaker 2: still achieve some sort of greatness in this world in
- 5:35Speaker 2: some way, shape or form. And he did it with
- 5:37Speaker 2: the game of baseball, and he should never be forgotten
- 5:39Speaker 2: with that. And that's kind of what I've been thinking about.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I mean, look, yeah, not a great person, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 3: by any stretch of the imagination. But yeah, I mean
- 5:53Speaker 3: he should be in the Hall of Fame. It's your job,
- 5:57Speaker 3: as as when you go up to the plate, is
- 5:59Speaker 3: to hit the ball. And he did it more than anybody.
- 6:02Speaker 3: So and I know I've said that a couple of
- 6:04Speaker 3: times on the show, So you know, I don't know,
- 6:07Speaker 3: I don't know how you'll have a Hall of Fame
- 6:09Speaker 3: without the guy that had doesn't you know, without the
- 6:11Speaker 3: guy that's the most hits in history. It's kind of
- 6:14Speaker 3: insane to me. I mean, I know there's a there's
- 6:17Speaker 3: a you know, a character clause Ty Cobs in there.
- 6:20Speaker 3: He wasn't a great person? Is OJ in the Football
- 6:23Speaker 3: Hall of Fame?
- 6:24Speaker 1: I believe?
- 6:24Speaker 3: So okay, yeah, killed two people, you know, So okay,
- 6:29Speaker 3: let's let's you know, with the whole Oh, we can't
- 6:33Speaker 3: let him in because of that, you know, just stop,
- 6:36Speaker 3: you know and listen. From a Philadelphia fans standpoint, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 3: they don't win in nineteen eighty if he's not on
- 6:44Speaker 3: that team, because that was a team that had tried
- 6:47Speaker 3: for a couple of years to get over the hump.
- 6:49Speaker 3: And you know, there there is something to be said
- 6:53Speaker 3: for championship DNA, for having somebody that has won before
- 6:59Speaker 3: and that has been part of a winner and can
- 7:01Speaker 3: impart the lessons of a winner into a group that's
- 7:04Speaker 3: trying to get there. And he was that with the Reds,
- 7:06Speaker 3: with the Big Red Machine, and I really do believe
- 7:10Speaker 3: he does not that they do not win in nineteen
- 7:12Speaker 3: eighty if he's not on that team. So for that alone,
- 7:16Speaker 3: you know he's going to be remembered here in Philadelphia.
- 7:19Speaker 3: It was kind of weird. It's just kind of strange
- 7:21Speaker 3: that you have on the same day you have him
- 7:24Speaker 3: passing and then de Kemba Matambo. Yeah, who you know,
- 7:29Speaker 3: it's just weird. Hell, you know, one person all the time,
- 7:32Speaker 3: you know, probably the greatest you know, getting hits of
- 7:35Speaker 3: all time, and then you know you have maybe the
- 7:38Speaker 3: greatest shop blocker in NBA history and just two vastly
- 7:42Speaker 3: different people away from from their field. Yeah where you know,
- 7:47Speaker 3: you have Rose who we've talked about here, and then Matambo,
- 7:51Speaker 3: who is just known for you know, his generosity and
- 7:54Speaker 3: when what he meant to the people of Africa and
- 7:57Speaker 3: just the humanitarian work that he did. It's just a
- 8:00Speaker 3: weird juxtaposition to see that on the same day. Just
- 8:05Speaker 3: two vastly different people, great in their field, but just
- 8:08Speaker 3: two vastly different people.
- 8:10Speaker 1: That meant a lot to their sports.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah. For it to be that on the on the
- 8:14Speaker 3: same day is yeah, it's a it's a strange strange
- 8:19Speaker 3: thing there.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Really is.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you James Earl Jones passed away a
- 8:22Speaker 2: little over a week ago or so, and boy, everybody's
- 8:24Speaker 2: been dropping like flies here.
- 8:26Speaker 1: It's going on this week's weird.
- 8:28Speaker 3: It's not this week. I mean it's been James Jones
- 8:31Speaker 3: probably two or three weeks ago. Yeah, but it feels
- 8:33Speaker 3: like it has been happening like a lot, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 3: Chris Christopherson and and just you know, just going back
- 8:40Speaker 3: over the past couple of weeks. Yeah, it feels like
- 8:43Speaker 3: it's it's a lot. I don't I don't understand. I
- 8:46Speaker 3: don't know why, but uh but yeah, it's it's a
- 8:49Speaker 3: strange thing, there really is.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And uh, I just wanted to let folks know John
- 8:54Speaker 2: Amos too, by the way, who like, yeah, yes, dude,
- 8:57Speaker 2: I freaking loved him growing up in so many different roles.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And I know this was gonna be a Pete Rose segment,
- 9:03Speaker 2: but still like like that really got Yeah, absolutely a
- 9:09Speaker 2: lot of death going around. Oh boy, and somebody's got
- 9:11Speaker 2: COVID here, Jesus god. No, Well, I did what I
- 9:19Speaker 2: did want to. It's not gonna be funny, are you kidding?
- 9:23Speaker 1: No, I need you to do the podcast.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I'm aware.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I did want to let folks.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Know we're that conversation of you trying to get out
- 9:34Speaker 3: to do it every week. I'd love to see how
- 9:35Speaker 3: that goes, I.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Know exactly, Jesus.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Well, we're gonna move on to the next segment and
- 9:41Speaker 2: get into some Eagles, but I wanted to let folks
- 9:43Speaker 2: know we're actually gonna be getting into some more Pete
- 9:45Speaker 2: Rose talk on this podcast platform next Monday on the
- 9:48Speaker 2: Table Talk Interview show, we're gonna have author Keith O'Brien
- 9:52Speaker 2: on New York Times best selling author of Charlie Hustle
- 9:57Speaker 2: and h He's gonna come on talk about his book
- 10:00Speaker 2: about the rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and again
- 10:03Speaker 2: New York Times bestseller coming on the show next week,
- 10:06Speaker 2: talk about Pete Rose and what he meant to baseball
- 10:08Speaker 2: and just what his life was and what it meant
- 10:12Speaker 2: to Major League baseball. So we're gonna getting into that
- 10:14Speaker 2: on Monday. But now let's dive into when this Philadelphia
- 10:19Speaker 2: Eagles team that is absolutely reeling. They are in their
- 10:23Speaker 2: bye week and already early this season, we're starting to
- 10:26Speaker 2: feel like something has to give, whether it's the coach,
- 10:29Speaker 2: whether it's certain players, leaders on this team, leaders on
- 10:32Speaker 2: this team who aren't acting like leaders. There's a culture
- 10:36Speaker 2: problem going on here behind the scenes. Actually, I shouldn't
- 10:41Speaker 2: even say behind the scenes. It's not behind the scenes.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Darius Lay this past week going on Michael Parsons Freaking
- 10:47Speaker 2: Podcast and making fun of his colleague, his teammate CJ.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Gardner Johnson for messing up on the field giving up
- 10:59Speaker 2: touchdowns like this was happening. What's going to happen in
- 11:02Speaker 2: the locker room next week? It's amazing. Just we just
- 11:07Speaker 2: want to give our thoughts about this team and how
- 11:10Speaker 2: they're looking right now or not looking. There's a lot
- 11:13Speaker 2: of bag crap going on here, Lenn. There's a lot
- 11:16Speaker 2: of bag crap going on with this team.
- 11:18Speaker 1: There's no culture.
- 11:20Speaker 3: The post game and I tend to stay off Twitter
- 11:24Speaker 3: during Eagles games just because I don't need to hear
- 11:27Speaker 3: fifty million people's opinions on it. Yeah, but but I
- 11:31Speaker 3: don't know if so if I don't know if anybody
- 11:32Speaker 3: made the point. But listen, anytime you can get doubled
- 11:35Speaker 3: up by a team that had to do hurricane preparation
- 11:39Speaker 3: earlier in the week, you know, that's hell of thing
- 11:44Speaker 3: to get doubled up by a team that had to
- 11:46Speaker 3: you know, make sure families were you know, out of
- 11:48Speaker 3: the way of you know, water surge, and a great point.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Stuff like that. Yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 1: We actually didn't mention that on the post game. We didn't.
- 11:55Speaker 1: That's a great point.
- 11:56Speaker 4: My god.
- 11:56Speaker 3: I mean it did you know, it didn't hit Tampa directly,
- 11:59Speaker 3: but then the bands that did cause some some you know,
- 12:02Speaker 3: swellings storm so, I mean, I know, I think Baker
- 12:06Speaker 3: Mayfield had mentioned something about having to move his family, yes,
- 12:10Speaker 3: you know, into a hotel or something. So those guys
- 12:13Speaker 3: were dealing with that, and and Eagles didn't have to
- 12:15Speaker 3: deal with that. They just had to show up and play.
- 12:18Speaker 3: And uh, that was apparently too much.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It's not that this Eagles team is just playing soft,
- 12:25Speaker 2: because they certainly are. I feel like, and I heard
- 12:28Speaker 2: this earlier today and I thought, oh my gosh, genius
- 12:30Speaker 2: it might have been. It might have been our friends
- 12:32Speaker 2: over at the Lockdown Eagles podcast talking about how these
- 12:35Speaker 2: free agents, that how he has brought in the talent,
- 12:38Speaker 2: that he has brought in great talent, great talent. But
- 12:40Speaker 2: it's not like they're free agents. It's like their contract agents,
- 12:44Speaker 2: you know what I mean. It's like they're it's like
- 12:46Speaker 2: it's like they're they're here simply to you know, quote
- 12:50Speaker 2: do a job, but not necessarily come together as a.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Team in order you looking for is mercenaries.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Mercenaries more or less?
- 13:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he assembles these great teams and we're gonna get
- 13:07Speaker 2: to We're gonna get to it that aspect in a
- 13:09Speaker 2: bit here. But it it's so frustrating to see where
- 13:14Speaker 2: the culture is with this team. We thought, after the
- 13:17Speaker 2: collapse last year, Okay, we're gonna have a brand new coordinators.
- 13:20Speaker 2: There's gonna be some new vision. Nick Sirianni's just gonna
- 13:23Speaker 2: take care of the quote culture things. It hasn't been
- 13:27Speaker 2: taken care of Lynn, not at all, not at all.
- 13:30Speaker 2: You got Devin White tweeting out Levonte David stuff during
- 13:34Speaker 2: the middle of a game. Yeah, it's it's it's not good.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni didn't even know about it during his press conference,
- 13:41Speaker 2: which okay, he didn't know about it at the time.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I wonder if he's gonna do anything about that.
- 13:46Speaker 3: I don't want if that's a thing, like I mean,
- 13:49Speaker 3: if you know, you handled the reins of the offense
- 13:52Speaker 3: and the defense over a new coordinators and you're in
- 13:55Speaker 3: charge of culture and it's like this, then that's what
- 14:00Speaker 3: you're supposed to be doing. What's happening in here. So
- 14:04Speaker 3: I mean We've talked about it in our in our
- 14:07Speaker 3: text thread with our friends, you know, Eric mentioned something
- 14:10Speaker 3: about it, well, bye week's perfect time to fire them,
- 14:12Speaker 3: and you had said, you know, I think it's too
- 14:15Speaker 3: were on the season to do that, and I think
- 14:16Speaker 3: that the Eagles feel that way as well. I think
- 14:19Speaker 3: it's you know, but so, I mean, I don't think
- 14:22Speaker 3: he's going to get fired, you know, anytime soon. But
- 14:26Speaker 3: does he make it through the season. That's not even
- 14:28Speaker 3: close to guaranteed with the way things are go, and
- 14:31Speaker 3: especially if this kind of stuff keeps up, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 3: and you can just tell, like, uh like him. It hurts.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I mean, I mean you can tell Hurts doesn't like
- 14:42Speaker 3: him at all. You know. They they asked a question.
- 14:45Speaker 3: They's Hurts the question and there's like He's like, yeah,
- 14:47Speaker 3: we have our moments, which you know, and I get
- 14:51Speaker 3: it if he doesn't like sir But you know, that's
- 14:54Speaker 3: a that's the thing with Hurts too, of like, you know, Okay,
- 14:57Speaker 3: the coordinators went last time, and Sirianni's gonna go this
- 15:02Speaker 3: time if it all goes south, you know, and then
- 15:05Speaker 3: but Jalen, where's that target going to next? Once Sirianni's gone? Yeah, yeah,
- 15:10Speaker 3: so you know, just be careful and and that's and
- 15:14Speaker 3: I'm not letting Sirianno off the hook. He should be,
- 15:16Speaker 3: he should have, you know, that target on him right now.
- 15:20Speaker 3: But I'm just saying down the road for the future,
- 15:22Speaker 3: you know, you you better be that guy because right
- 15:25Speaker 3: now you're turning the ball over too much. But yeah,
- 15:27Speaker 3: with regard to Sirianni, I I just if he's not
- 15:31Speaker 3: fixing the culture, what is he doing here? What is
- 15:33Speaker 3: he bringing to the team? And for that, you know,
- 15:37Speaker 3: if it doesn't get fixed, then why would he be
- 15:40Speaker 3: here by the end of the season.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I completely agree with you. If it's not
- 15:44Speaker 2: going to get fixed, he's done.
- 15:45Speaker 1: He's done.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Seriously, Week ten at least, I could see him being gone.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But I do wonder how culpable Howie Roseman is in
- 15:56Speaker 2: this in this particular situation, especially from a defensive standpoint
- 16:01Speaker 2: where they've only had one decent defensive game, which was
- 16:04Speaker 2: against New Orleans Saints in their house. Got to give
- 16:07Speaker 2: him credit for it, But the fact of the matter is,
- 16:10Speaker 2: and everybody's talking about Bryce Huff as they should be,
- 16:14Speaker 2: but they're not going to bench a seventeen million dollars
- 16:17Speaker 2: a year player. They're just not going to do it.
- 16:20Speaker 2: They're not going to do it. But something has to
- 16:22Speaker 2: give in terms of the pass rush. And we got
- 16:24Speaker 2: some listener feedback from Patrick, who contacts us every now
- 16:29Speaker 2: and again, and we wanted to bring this up. So
- 16:31Speaker 2: he said in his email to us, great show guys.
- 16:34Speaker 2: If i'm Howie, I aim to fleece the Browns.
- 16:37Speaker 1: The Browns.
- 16:38Speaker 2: By the way, folks, who the Eagles are going to
- 16:39Speaker 2: be playing week six after this bye week, go get
- 16:42Speaker 2: Miles Garrett for the pass rush. His contract ends in
- 16:45Speaker 2: twenty twenty six, and they paid way too much for
- 16:49Speaker 2: that criminal Watson. The place is a dumpster fire there
- 16:53Speaker 2: and there is no way Garrett resigns there. My only
- 16:56Speaker 2: hesitation would be how Fangio uses his ends. He seems
- 16:59Speaker 2: to like edge guys versus defensive ends. I love what
- 17:05Speaker 2: Patrick is saying here. I don't know if, I don't
- 17:07Speaker 2: know if financially they have the bandwidth to do it.
- 17:11Speaker 2: But something has to give with regard to this pass rush.
- 17:13Speaker 2: When they are not getting to the quarterback. They're not
- 17:16Speaker 2: getting to the quarterback at all. I think they have
- 17:18Speaker 2: like five or six sacks on the season thus far,
- 17:21Speaker 2: after after four weeks of play, it's it's this is
- 17:25Speaker 2: not good.
- 17:26Speaker 3: This is what we could with regard to Garrett if
- 17:28Speaker 3: they play the Browns in two weeks. I don't think
- 17:30Speaker 3: the Browns are going to make a trade to the
- 17:31Speaker 3: Eagles to send their star defensive end to a week
- 17:36Speaker 3: they're going to play in two weeks, right, Not this
- 17:38Speaker 3: happen right next two weeks.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Trade deadline is November fifth.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I didn't know, and it was okay, but yeah, I
- 17:47Speaker 3: don't know, Like what do you give up? I mean,
- 17:49Speaker 3: I know he said the Browns and maybe that's easy
- 17:53Speaker 3: to easier to do now. I don't know how good
- 17:55Speaker 3: or bad the Browns you know, front office is, but
- 17:58Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I do have to wonder about, you know,
- 18:01Speaker 3: the cap and all that stuff, like how do those
- 18:04Speaker 3: numbers work out? You know? If I feel like, if
- 18:06Speaker 3: you're going to bring somebody like that in who does
- 18:08Speaker 3: make a decent amount of money, there's gonna have to
- 18:10Speaker 3: be a corresponding, big money move in order to clear
- 18:14Speaker 3: things up. I mean, you can't just you know, trade
- 18:17Speaker 3: a couple of draft picks to get Miles Garrett. You're
- 18:19Speaker 3: gonna have to, you know, move some salary around too, right,
- 18:22Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean not I'm sure would I love
- 18:25Speaker 3: him on the team, sure, absolutely, But you know again,
- 18:29Speaker 3: you know, okay, if we do get him, though, is
- 18:32Speaker 3: he going to be you know, tweeting, you know, retweeting
- 18:35Speaker 3: the Browns or whatever in a couple of weeks, or
- 18:37Speaker 3: you know, if they were to bring him in, is
- 18:40Speaker 3: he going to be on somebody else's podcast?
- 18:42Speaker 1: Right?
- 18:43Speaker 3: So, I mean, yeah, Miles Garrett's a hell of a player,
- 18:46Speaker 3: but that doesn't necessarily fix what's going on in the
- 18:49Speaker 3: Eagles locker room.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Absolutely, And see that's the point that I was getting
- 18:52Speaker 2: ready to get into. I wanted to read Patrick's email first,
- 18:55Speaker 2: but still like continuing with that initial discussion point, this
- 19:00Speaker 2: Eagles front office and Howie Roseman, they've shown that they
- 19:04Speaker 2: can build powerhouse teams, powerhouse teams and talented teams, but
- 19:09Speaker 2: then they get to a point land where they can't
- 19:11Speaker 2: sustain the success over extended periods of time. We look
- 19:16Speaker 2: at the Carson Wentz era now the Jalen Hurts era
- 19:19Speaker 2: here both are very similar. Both Carson Wentz Jalen Hurts
- 19:23Speaker 2: having a dominant season and then after that it tapers off,
- 19:28Speaker 2: It tapers off they can't sustain the success, and it
- 19:30Speaker 2: affects the offense, it affects the defense. We're seeing similarities
- 19:35Speaker 2: to this. So while we love what Howie Roseman does
- 19:39Speaker 2: for the most part during the offseason, and we have
- 19:42Speaker 2: basically since you know, especially the last Super Bowl a
- 19:45Speaker 2: couple of years ago, and of course they didn't win it. It
- 19:48Speaker 2: was a heartbreaker, but they haven't been able to sustain
- 19:51Speaker 2: that success like other teams perhaps have of course, like
- 19:54Speaker 2: the Kansas City Chiefs, like the San Francisco forty nine ers.
- 19:58Speaker 2: You know, they get to a certain en shalon these
- 20:01Speaker 2: teams and they can continue to sustain that success. The
- 20:03Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles have not been able to do that for
- 20:07Speaker 2: some reason. It leads me to believe that sometimes Howie
- 20:10Speaker 2: Roseman may be behind the ball on some things and
- 20:14Speaker 2: playing catch up. In a way, He's certainly going to
- 20:16Speaker 2: be playing catch up with regard to the pass rush
- 20:18Speaker 2: as we were just talking about, Lenn.
- 20:20Speaker 1: So, I don't know.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I think it's an interesting discussion point moving forward and
- 20:23Speaker 2: something for us to keep our eyes on here. And
- 20:25Speaker 2: it's more long term the fact that this front office
- 20:28Speaker 2: can build a powerhouse team, but they just can't sustain
- 20:30Speaker 2: success for longer periods of time.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I mean, to me, that's a that's a coaching thing.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I mean to me, you know, I mean, you know, okay,
- 20:38Speaker 3: how he's able to get all these guys, all this
- 20:40Speaker 3: talent into one area, which tells me he'd be great
- 20:43Speaker 3: like Madden GM or you know, fantasy football player. But
- 20:47Speaker 3: you know, you're dealing with real people and real personalities
- 20:50Speaker 3: that have to kind of come together, and that seems
- 20:53Speaker 3: to be worthy issue is getting getting the personalities to
- 20:56Speaker 3: come together and getting the coaches to you know, get
- 21:00Speaker 3: by in and multi cohesive unity. And it doesn't seem
- 21:04Speaker 3: like it seems like that's where the issue is. You know,
- 21:07Speaker 3: I mean, maybe you know, maybe they're maybe they're not
- 21:11Speaker 3: doing their due diligence in terms of, you know, like
- 21:14Speaker 3: the makeup of a player in terms of personality and
- 21:17Speaker 3: how they deal with adversity. Maybe they're just bringing in
- 21:20Speaker 3: talent guys that are kind of mentally soft. That's possible too,
- 21:23Speaker 3: and maybe that's on how if you want to, you know,
- 21:25Speaker 3: put it that way. But to me, I mean, it's
- 21:28Speaker 3: it's a coaching thing.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I'm telling you, After after what Darius Slay did this
- 21:33Speaker 2: week big sorry, big play Sleigh after what he did,
- 21:37Speaker 2: and he's he's not doing many big plays at all
- 21:39Speaker 2: this season. I don't know, man, I getting rid of
- 21:42Speaker 2: him would send a message I think to this team.
- 21:45Speaker 3: It might. I mean, I think he's been a little
- 21:51Speaker 3: overrated for very much in the past two or three years.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Okay, okay, I mean this season, of course. I mean
- 21:57Speaker 2: he's one of the I think he's one of the
- 22:00Speaker 2: top three, I should say, worst three cornerbacks in the
- 22:04Speaker 2: league in terms of giving up yards.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Maybe over the past. Maybe inconsistent is a word, because
- 22:09Speaker 3: he will have some really good plays and some really
- 22:11Speaker 3: good games and then other games where he's just getting burnt.
- 22:14Speaker 3: So it's just gonna I don't know, it doesn't feel
- 22:18Speaker 3: ever like truly consistent.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, whether it was going on Michael Parsons podcast,
- 22:23Speaker 2: which fine, you know what, in the offseason, do it
- 22:25Speaker 2: if you want, do it in the off season if
- 22:27Speaker 2: you want. But man, during the season, like, that's that
- 22:31Speaker 2: Eagles Cowboys rivalry. That's there, and that's there for it,
- 22:35Speaker 2: that's there with fans too, And how are you so
- 22:38Speaker 2: tone deaf when you have the type of game that
- 22:41Speaker 2: you just recently had and you're being criticized for it.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Of course, you know, then don't go on then, don't
- 22:46Speaker 2: go on Twitter. Just don't go on Twitter if you're
- 22:49Speaker 2: gonna be triggered. And then you just tweet out your
- 22:52Speaker 2: resume basically saying, oh, this is what I've done through
- 22:55Speaker 2: my career, six pro balls, I've had all these pass breakups.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Dude, you just got smoked. Don't give us your resume.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I don't know, man, it's like slay I am not,
- 23:06Speaker 2: as a fan, not too happy with.
- 23:08Speaker 3: It's softer than baby shit. Basically, that's kind of that
- 23:11Speaker 3: kind of reaction. I mean. And that's the thing, Like,
- 23:16Speaker 3: if this is a young guy, then okay, that's one thing.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I can certainly understand that because you know you're still young,
- 23:24Speaker 3: you have your head up your ear end, and you
- 23:26Speaker 3: know you don't know any better. But like he's been
- 23:29Speaker 3: in the league for how long now, he's a veteran player. Yeah,
- 23:32Speaker 3: Like I don't know, Like it's like one of those
- 23:34Speaker 3: guys that you know, you know, okay, like maybe like
- 23:38Speaker 3: a basketball player who's who put up fifty points and
- 23:41Speaker 3: he's trash talking the guy that's garden him and the
- 23:43Speaker 3: guy that's Garden him goes, yeah, like the scoreboard, my
- 23:45Speaker 3: team's up forty even though you're doing all this. Yeah, yeah,
- 23:48Speaker 3: it's just like that, Where's where's the awareness? Like, Okay,
- 23:52Speaker 3: if I feel like if I was in his shoes
- 23:56Speaker 3: and you know, my team just Scott smoked as a veteran,
- 24:01Speaker 3: if somebody said, hey, can you come on my podcast, like, hey, man,
- 24:04Speaker 3: I'm interested. Not this week, it's you know, there's it's
- 24:09Speaker 3: just bad vibes right now. It's a poor look for
- 24:13Speaker 3: me to go on your show this week after we
- 24:15Speaker 3: just got our asses handed to us. I mean that
- 24:18Speaker 3: that should be I don't know, man, that should be
- 24:21Speaker 3: easily apparent, and for some reason it's not. I don't
- 24:24Speaker 3: know why.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's disheartening to see where this Eagles team is
- 24:28Speaker 2: at and it's early in the season. They can write
- 24:30Speaker 2: the ship, folks, they can. I believe they can write
- 24:32Speaker 2: this ship. But it's going to take some leadership from
- 24:34Speaker 2: the coaches. It's certainly going to take some leadership from
- 24:37Speaker 2: the players.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Man.
- 24:38Speaker 2: They're really missing They're really missing Kelsey and Fletcher Cox
- 24:41Speaker 2: in terms of leadership on this team. So, Lenn, you
- 24:43Speaker 2: got anything else for the Eagles before we go to break.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Well, they can't lose this week, so that's good.
- 24:49Speaker 1: There we go.
- 24:50Speaker 2: If you are new to listening to the PSD podcast show,

- 25:20Speaker 2: out there, and uh, we're gonna take a quick break now.
- 25:23Speaker 2: We'll be back in just a bit. All right, Len,
- 25:26Speaker 2: we are back. I love watching this Flyers preseason at
- 25:32Speaker 2: this point. I have loved watching it because one hockey
- 25:36Speaker 2: is back, but two because of one metve Mitchkoff, who
- 25:41Speaker 2: is continuing to shine in this preseason. Dude, it's been
- 25:45Speaker 2: great watching this kid. It's incredible and like, I don't know,
- 25:49Speaker 2: I don't know where your thoughts have been going, perhaps
- 25:51Speaker 2: watching him on the ice. But I'm thinking to myself,
- 25:55Speaker 2: how well is this kid going to be able to
- 25:58Speaker 2: elevate others on his team? You know, I think we
- 26:02Speaker 2: remember back in the day when when Eric Lindross, I mean,
- 26:05Speaker 2: he was one of those guys he helped turn Leclaire
- 26:09Speaker 2: and Rendberg into one of the most lethal lines in
- 26:11Speaker 2: the mid nineties. You remember when Yager was in Philadelphia
- 26:16Speaker 2: for that one season. You could see the residual effects
- 26:19Speaker 2: that it actually had on Wing Simmons and Claude Drew
- 26:22Speaker 2: and Scott Hartnell at the time, Matve Mitchkoff. So far,
- 26:26Speaker 2: and I know it's the preseason, folks, I get it.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I know I'm excited about it. But he's got the
- 26:30Speaker 2: speed and the scoring ability that he could be really
- 26:34Speaker 2: good with just about anybody on the same line as him.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Travis Konnectney, he's been doing some good stuff with. I mean,
- 26:42Speaker 2: he's showing some chemistry with younger guys like Morgan Frost
- 26:44Speaker 2: and even even the rookie Jet Lachenko as well. He's
- 26:49Speaker 2: done well with Vetslake, Sean Coattoree. And let's say, I
- 26:52Speaker 2: gotta mention this too, man. You gotta love Coots taking
- 26:56Speaker 2: off the gloves in that preseason game with the Bruins
- 26:59Speaker 2: when the Bruins were screwing around with Mitch Cough. And
- 27:02Speaker 2: this is the preseason, for god's sake, and you hardly
- 27:05Speaker 2: see kots ever taking the gloves off and fighting, but
- 27:09Speaker 2: he did, and he did it for Mitch Cough. And
- 27:11Speaker 2: I was just like, man, freaking go, let's go here,
- 27:15Speaker 2: let's go. I love what the Mitch Cough vibe has
- 27:18Speaker 2: been so far during this preseason.
- 27:20Speaker 1: It's been really fun. Man.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's nice to get I mean because
- 27:25Speaker 3: that's the thing we we've talked about with the Flyers
- 27:27Speaker 3: for how long. Now it's just like, Okay, it's a
- 27:31Speaker 3: bunch of you know, at best second line guys and
- 27:35Speaker 3: third line guys, and it feels like everybody's playing a
- 27:38Speaker 3: lineup from what their true talent level is. And it's
- 27:41Speaker 3: nice to have someone here who's genuinely considered and not
- 27:46Speaker 3: just in Philadelphia, where, let's face it, no matter the sport,
- 27:48Speaker 3: we can tend to overvalue guys. You know, we see
- 27:51Speaker 3: him every day and we like, oh man, how come
- 27:54Speaker 3: the national media isn't talking about our guy as much
- 27:56Speaker 3: as and you know, and sometimes there's a reason why
- 27:59Speaker 3: the not talking about him as much. But it feels
- 28:01Speaker 3: like everybody you know around the NHL is talking about
- 28:05Speaker 3: this kid, and then you know he's in that that
- 28:08Speaker 3: conversation the top three people that are talked about for
- 28:11Speaker 3: the Calder Cup for for Rookie of the Year, you know,
- 28:15Speaker 3: in the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year. And
- 28:16Speaker 3: so you know, having someone who is genuinely considered not
- 28:22Speaker 3: just in Philadelphia but around the league as having elite
- 28:26Speaker 3: level skills, yes, it's fun. I mean it's fun to
- 28:29Speaker 3: have and I mean my interest in watching the Flyers
- 28:32Speaker 3: is so much greater than it was at this time
- 28:35Speaker 3: last year for that reason, Like, I can't wait to
- 28:38Speaker 3: see this kid play on a nightly basis.
- 28:40Speaker 2: It's gonna be so fun, dude, It's gonna be fun.
- 28:43Speaker 2: There's gonna be ups and downs. It's not gonna be perfect.
- 28:45Speaker 1: It's not.
- 28:46Speaker 2: It's not like he's going to be Eric Lindross right
- 28:48Speaker 2: out of the gate. There's gonna be a learning curve.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Well, and there's gonna be a learning curve. And there's
- 28:53Speaker 3: also you know, I hope people aren't expecting him to
- 28:56Speaker 3: drag you know, the Flyers into you know into the playoffs.
- 29:01Speaker 3: You know, in his rookie year, there's still listen, there
- 29:04Speaker 3: is more talent than there has been. And just by
- 29:07Speaker 3: the presence of Mitchikoff himself, it's a more talented team,
- 29:10Speaker 3: but you still need more around. I know, I've I've
- 29:15Speaker 3: heard people talking, and people are talking playoffs and that stuff.
- 29:18Speaker 3: This is still not a wildly talented team right there.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Still could stand to be a significant talent upgrade in
- 29:27Speaker 3: the forward core. I'm gonna keep saying that. And I
- 29:30Speaker 3: don't care if people are like, oh, you're just being
- 29:32Speaker 3: nakes or whatever. I'm sorry. It's it's getting better. And
- 29:36Speaker 3: just with Mitch Coffee in there, it's great, but it's
- 29:38Speaker 3: not there yet where it's good enough. Yet they still
- 29:42Speaker 3: have building that they need to do. So it's got
- 29:44Speaker 3: that's got to get better in that regard. So I'm
- 29:46Speaker 3: hoping people aren't. You know, if they're not, you know,
- 29:51Speaker 3: if they're if they get off their rough start and
- 29:53Speaker 3: like people weren't just like, well, what's this kid doing.
- 29:55Speaker 3: He's not. He's not you know, the savior of everything.
- 29:57Speaker 3: You know, he's not going to be. So get that
- 30:00Speaker 3: out of your head right now.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Absolutely, because hockey is a development type of game.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I mean, it's not going to be and.
- 30:06Speaker 3: It's not basketball.
- 30:07Speaker 2: It's not like he's going to be Cody right or
- 30:10Speaker 2: Jordan you know what I mean. Like, it's not going
- 30:12Speaker 2: to be like that, folks.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why people, you know, in basketball it is,
- 30:18Speaker 3: it's a team sport. But the individual can shine more
- 30:21Speaker 3: than any of the four major sports. Right The individual
- 30:24Speaker 3: shines more in basketball where you can you can dream
- 30:28Speaker 3: on that guy a little bit more than you can
- 30:31Speaker 3: in hockey or football or baseball, where there's so many
- 30:35Speaker 3: other more moving parts that you know have to be
- 30:37Speaker 3: working in order for your team to get to a
- 30:40Speaker 3: certain level.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Absolutely, but but I do have some faith here. Like
- 30:44Speaker 2: I initially said at the onset of this discussion and segment,
- 30:48Speaker 2: I think from what we've seen thus far, I think
- 30:50Speaker 2: he has the ability. I think Mattvey Mitchkov has the
- 30:53Speaker 2: ability to elevate others around him because we're seeing it
- 30:57Speaker 2: early on, we're seeing the glimpses of it.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Were seeing.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Small aspects of it here and there that can be
- 31:04Speaker 2: built upon in the future. Mitchkov is going to be
- 31:08Speaker 2: able to elevate others in the future, and that should be.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you're a Fires fan, That's what you should be
- 31:13Speaker 3: looking for this year is how he you know, vibes
- 31:17Speaker 3: with some of these other young players on the team.
- 31:19Speaker 3: How they work with each other. Okay, let's if he's
- 31:22Speaker 3: on a line with Tippett or if he's on a
- 31:24Speaker 3: line with Bobby Brink, you know, how are they working
- 31:27Speaker 3: together and how are those connections forming? That to me
- 31:30Speaker 3: is going to be the most fun thing to watch
- 31:32Speaker 3: this season.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Absolutely all right, Well that's going to do it for
- 31:36Speaker 2: our Flyers talk here. We weren't going to get into
- 31:39Speaker 2: any Union talk, but I think I think they lost
- 31:42Speaker 2: to Orlando. It's like two to one or something like that. Anyway,
- 31:47Speaker 2: what a disaster for that team. Boo. We're not going
- 31:51Speaker 2: to get into them, but what we are going to
- 31:52Speaker 2: get into some Philadelphia Phillies talk. Philadelphia Phillies going to
- 31:57Speaker 2: the postseason.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Len Oh, yeah again again it's a tradition.
- 32:03Speaker 3: I just watched, you know, the end of Game two
- 32:06Speaker 3: of the Brewers Mets series, and I thought I didn't know,
- 32:10Speaker 3: I didn't know if they reseeded after every round or
- 32:12Speaker 3: how it worked, but apparently they just get whoever wins
- 32:15Speaker 3: the Brewers Mets series. Yes, and the Brewers tied it
- 32:18Speaker 3: up at one game apiece tonight, so I guess Game
- 32:21Speaker 3: three for that will be tomorrow. And I think I'm
- 32:25Speaker 3: not one hundred percent sure when it's going to be played,
- 32:27Speaker 3: but at any rate, whoever wins that next game between
- 32:30Speaker 3: the Brewers and the Mets, that's who it's going to be.
- 32:31Speaker 3: For the Phils.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think it's going to start Saturday too, right,
- 32:34Speaker 2: is a Saturday.
- 32:36Speaker 3: I believe. So, Actually, I'm gonna just do.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Well, yeah, well, we've got our We're going to start
- 32:42Speaker 2: off our Phillies discussion folks with our new top three list.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Top three things that we're going to be looking for
- 32:49Speaker 2: during this Phillies postseason run, some things that are going
- 32:52Speaker 2: to be important to us. And I don't know if
- 32:55Speaker 2: you were able to pull that up, Lan, if are
- 32:57Speaker 2: they going to be starting on Saturday?
- 33:01Speaker 3: Well, okay, so tomorrow, Yeah, tomorrow they play It's New
- 33:06Speaker 3: York and Milwaukee, so that game will be uh, you know,
- 33:10Speaker 3: to to find out who's who's moving on to the
- 33:14Speaker 3: next round. And then it looks like yeah, Saturday, uh yeah,
- 33:19Speaker 3: it looks like it's gonna be four o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Yep, nice, nice, So we.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Got read October here, folks read October. But what are
- 33:29Speaker 2: the things that we here are going to be looking
- 33:31Speaker 2: for during this Phillies postseason run. I'd love to know
- 33:34Speaker 2: what you're going to be looking for as well, Philadelphia
- 33:37Speaker 2: Sports Table at gmail dot com, we'd love to hear
- 33:39Speaker 2: from you. Read your email on the show next week.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Len.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I have a list of three in no in no
- 33:46Speaker 2: real particular order. I know, we kind of go through
- 33:49Speaker 2: our top three lists, you know, like we start off
- 33:52Speaker 2: with three, two and one. But I'm just gonna like
- 33:54Speaker 2: read through mine if that's all right with you, and
- 33:56Speaker 2: then I'll let you read. We'll kind of just you know,
- 33:59Speaker 2: sift through at that way. For me, the first thing
- 34:02Speaker 2: that came to my mind is a guy who is
- 34:05Speaker 2: extremely underwhelming during the course of the regular season, but
- 34:09Speaker 2: I want to see how he's going to be able
- 34:11Speaker 2: to perform in the playoffs with a different mindset perhaps,
- 34:14Speaker 2: and that's Bryson Stott. I want to see how Bryson
- 34:17Speaker 2: Scott is going to perform and if he will perform
- 34:20Speaker 2: better in the playoffs than he did throughout the course
- 34:23Speaker 2: of the regular season. Look, we know last year, folks
- 34:27Speaker 2: that he had a great season. He slashed last year
- 34:29Speaker 2: two eighty three, twenty nine and four nineteen. Not too bad,
- 34:34Speaker 2: not too bad at all. This year, wow, two forty five,
- 34:39Speaker 2: three point fifteen and three fifty six. That was his
- 34:43Speaker 2: slash line in the regular season this year. Quite the
- 34:46Speaker 2: drop off and he had a six point I'm sorry,
- 34:49Speaker 2: a point six seven to one ops this year, So
- 34:52Speaker 2: len a drop off. Of course, as we know, we're
- 34:55Speaker 2: all disappointed, us fans are disappointed in what Bryson Scott
- 34:58Speaker 2: did during the regular season. But I'm gonna see if
- 35:01Speaker 2: he can perform better during this particular offseason. The energy
- 35:06Speaker 2: is different, of course.
- 35:08Speaker 5: Uh, the the moment itself is a different feel, a
- 35:14Speaker 5: different vibe of course, because it is the postseason.
- 35:17Speaker 1: There's so much energy.
- 35:19Speaker 2: So I'm gonna I'm gonna see what I'm gonna be
- 35:21Speaker 2: keeping my eye on on Bryson Stott. And after that,
- 35:24Speaker 2: my number two here is the lack of production at
- 35:28Speaker 2: the bottom of the lineup. What that's actually going to
- 35:31Speaker 2: mean for this team during these games. You know, we've
- 35:35Speaker 2: seen it time and time again, especially during the last
- 35:37Speaker 2: half of the season, that lack of production at the
- 35:39Speaker 2: bottom of the lineup has really has really hurt this team,
- 35:42Speaker 2: especially with runners in scoring position every now and again.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Number three for me is players actually stepping up for
- 35:51Speaker 2: each other. And what I mean by that is I
- 35:54Speaker 2: mean throughout this season, Len, there's been seldom a point
- 35:58Speaker 2: in time where the entire lineup off to the nine
- 36:00Speaker 2: hole has been hot at the same time. We really
- 36:03Speaker 2: haven't seen that, and of course I think it's unlikely
- 36:06Speaker 2: to happen throughout this postseason. But the Phillies are gonna
- 36:09Speaker 2: need their lineup to help cover for each other. They're
- 36:13Speaker 2: gonna need to help cover for each other every now
- 36:14Speaker 2: and then. If Kyle Schwarber isn't doing too well, then
- 36:18Speaker 2: you know what, Nick Castianus, he's gonna need to step up.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Or if Trey Turner's not doing well, maybe Alec Bohm
- 36:24Speaker 2: needs to step up a little bit more. Or going
- 36:26Speaker 2: back to Bryson Stott, maybe Bryson Stott needs to step
- 36:29Speaker 2: up a little bit more. Who's going to be helping
- 36:31Speaker 2: to cover for other people in the lineup. That's what
- 36:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna be looking for. So those are my three, Buddy,
- 36:37Speaker 2: and I don't know if you want to get into
- 36:38Speaker 2: any of them before we get into your top three.
- 36:41Speaker 2: But that's really what I'm gonna be looking for. Those
- 36:43Speaker 2: are my three things I'm gonna be looking at during
- 36:44Speaker 2: this postseason.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of remarkable the year that Stott has had,
- 36:49Speaker 3: I mean just to how far you know, he kind
- 36:52Speaker 3: of fell off. Yeah, you know, I mean it's a
- 36:54Speaker 3: guy that you know, Okay, he had this really good
- 36:56Speaker 3: year and he's young, and we're just expecting that leap
- 36:59Speaker 3: to contain you, you know, another year of growth, another
- 37:02Speaker 3: year you know in the league, more familiar, he'll be
- 37:05Speaker 3: even better.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean you.
- 37:09Speaker 3: You could have definitely made that case, you know, coming
- 37:12Speaker 3: in the season that you know, he's a guy that
- 37:13Speaker 3: you could look at as being an All Star, and
- 37:15Speaker 3: it just didn't happen. I mean maybe, and I know
- 37:19Speaker 3: you can't just you know, turn it on and off,
- 37:22Speaker 3: but you know, you hope that maybe. Okay, you look
- 37:25Speaker 3: at the stats. Everybody's everybody's numbers are back to zero.
- 37:28Speaker 3: It's the postseason. Yep, it's completely different. You know, you know,
- 37:32Speaker 3: all everybody's numbers are all they all get get set,
- 37:36Speaker 3: get you know, reved back to what they were. Yeah,
- 37:38Speaker 3: that's the word I was looking for that I could
- 37:40Speaker 3: not find. So yeah, maybe maybe that helps him. I
- 37:45Speaker 3: don't know, but he's got to be better than he
- 37:48Speaker 3: was in the regular season because I mean he really
- 37:52Speaker 3: lengthened that lineup and made it more formidable last year. Yeah,
- 37:56Speaker 3: and you know, he kind of ties in with what
- 37:59Speaker 3: you were saying and about the bottom of the lineup.
- 38:01Speaker 3: I mean, if he isn't you know, if he doesn't
- 38:05Speaker 3: get hot, I mean, if he remains struggling like he
- 38:08Speaker 3: has been all, you know, all year, then he just
- 38:11Speaker 3: becomes another guy at the bottom of the lineup that
- 38:13Speaker 3: isn't you know, isn't giving you what you need right,
- 38:16Speaker 3: and that just makes the lineup that much shorter, you know. Okay,
- 38:19Speaker 3: now we're down to four or five guys that you know,
- 38:22Speaker 3: we're confident with in the lineup, and then beyond that,
- 38:25Speaker 3: it's you know, what could be construed as easy outs.
- 38:28Speaker 3: You know, if you're not going to perform exactly.
- 38:30Speaker 2: And it's not gonna be able to cover, He's not
- 38:32Speaker 2: gonna be able to cover for people like I was saying,
- 38:34Speaker 2: you know my number three. You know, players stepping up
- 38:36Speaker 2: for each other. If if he's not producing, he's not
- 38:40Speaker 2: gonna be if they need if they just need him,
- 38:42Speaker 2: like if for some reason Kye Schwarber just isn't doing
- 38:44Speaker 2: well at the plate, and if Bryson Stott's not able
- 38:46Speaker 2: to help cover for him. I mean, that's it's it's significant.
- 38:49Speaker 2: It's gonna be significant during the postseason.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Yeah, no, absolutely, yes, we'll have to We'll see how
- 38:55Speaker 3: that goes.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Well, why don't you go through your
- 38:57Speaker 2: top three and we'll get into that a little bit here.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Well, the first thing, you know, I'm looking for. You know,
- 39:03Speaker 3: you look at the past couple of seasons in the
- 39:05Speaker 3: playoffs and the Phillies came in as a wild card
- 39:08Speaker 3: and they, you know, had their first round series and
- 39:11Speaker 3: they toppled the Braves, who were you know, who had
- 39:13Speaker 3: to buy, you know, winning the NL East. Now the
- 39:17Speaker 3: shoes on the other foot, now the Phillies have had
- 39:19Speaker 3: to buy. You know, does that cool them off at all? Oh? Yeah,
- 39:23Speaker 3: they you know, I know that they had a simulated game,
- 39:26Speaker 3: I believe today, but you know, they had that momentum
- 39:30Speaker 3: that they carried throughout the playoffs each of the past
- 39:32Speaker 3: two years at least to get to the you know,
- 39:35Speaker 3: the World Series. One year, the NLCS the next year,
- 39:38Speaker 3: you know, does that get extinguished a little bit or
- 39:42Speaker 3: are they able to kind of you know, keep a
- 39:44Speaker 3: rhythm and maintain things. That to me is going to
- 39:46Speaker 3: be the biggest thing. Okay, if they come into you know,
- 39:51Speaker 3: Game one of whoever it is between the Mets and
- 39:53Speaker 3: the Brewers, and they dropped Game one, You're going to
- 39:56Speaker 3: see a whole lot of people in the Philadelphia area
- 39:59Speaker 3: that are going to be soiling their pants a little
- 40:01Speaker 3: bit and going, oh boy, uh oh, what's happening? Yeah,
- 40:05Speaker 3: because you're i that panic is gonna send in real
- 40:08Speaker 3: quick if that happens.
- 40:09Speaker 2: And that's why Zach Wheeler is so important.
- 40:13Speaker 1: We're gonna get to having a bit with Eric More.
- 40:16Speaker 3: That's the main thing I'm looking forward to to seeing.
- 40:20Speaker 3: The other thing is, uh, number two is a guy
- 40:23Speaker 3: who was hot as hell the first half of the year,
- 40:26Speaker 3: made the All Star team and then just kind of
- 40:28Speaker 3: fell off. And that's Ranger Suarez. I mean, you want
- 40:31Speaker 3: four starters in the postseason, and you know, I know
- 40:35Speaker 3: that we were you know, okay going into that last
- 40:37Speaker 3: star of the season. How's he gonna look? Is he
- 40:39Speaker 3: gonna be somebody that we're confident in going into the
- 40:41Speaker 3: playoffs and he just got shelled. So now you got
- 40:44Speaker 3: two guys that you consider frontline guys and Wheeler and Nola.
- 40:47Speaker 3: You've got Christopher Sanchez. Sanchez who had a nice year
- 40:50Speaker 3: and okay, you know, I would prefer if he was
- 40:53Speaker 3: the number four guy, but with the way Suarez is pitched,
- 40:58Speaker 3: he he's not pitching like the number three guy right now.
- 41:01Speaker 3: He's got to find whatever, you know, magic he had
- 41:05Speaker 3: the first half of the year in the playoffs last year.
- 41:08Speaker 3: He's got to get back to being that guy because
- 41:11Speaker 3: as of right now, if he walks out there on
- 41:13Speaker 3: the mail, I'm nervous, you know, and how he's pitching
- 41:17Speaker 3: the second half, So he's a guy I'm gonna be
- 41:19Speaker 3: definitely watching. And then third, you know, as they go
- 41:22Speaker 3: through the playoffs, if they do, you know, make it
- 41:25Speaker 3: a little again into the next round and perhaps beyond that.
- 41:30Speaker 3: You know, they were cruising last year. They they they
- 41:32Speaker 3: could have been hotter, and then for whatever reason, halfway
- 41:36Speaker 3: through that NLCS against the Diamondbacks, it's like somebody just
- 41:40Speaker 3: cut the power and just the lights went out. Harper,
- 41:45Speaker 3: it happened with everybody. It happened with Schwarber. None of
- 41:49Speaker 3: those guys could hit it, just like they started throwing
- 41:52Speaker 3: off speed stuff. And these guys they look like, you know,
- 41:56Speaker 3: the guy from Major League when all he could hit
- 41:58Speaker 3: was fastballs and he couldn't hit a carve. That's what
- 42:00Speaker 3: the Phillies look like. They look like Pedro Serrano out there,
- 42:05Speaker 3: you know, in the second half of that series against Diamondbacks.
- 42:08Speaker 3: So can they avoid just everybody going cold at the
- 42:13Speaker 3: same time and the offense completely disappearing like they did
- 42:17Speaker 3: last year in the NLCS, because that happened and that
- 42:20Speaker 3: is something that they cannot survive.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Look, I want to go back really quick to what
- 42:25Speaker 2: you said about Ranger Swarez. Eric Mortelly and I are
- 42:29Speaker 2: going to be talking about it in a little bit too,
- 42:31Speaker 2: but I thought it was interesting. I mean, Rob Thompson
- 42:33Speaker 2: expressed his confidence in Suarez heading into this postseason. I mean,
- 42:37Speaker 2: he was very adamant about how he thinks that Ranger
- 42:41Speaker 2: Swarez gets some rest, he can absolutely bounce back and look,
- 42:45Speaker 2: the guy. The guy's been through some stuff this season.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Is his inability to stay consistent has been a factor
- 42:53Speaker 2: because from a health perspective, it really has. I mean,
- 42:56Speaker 2: we remember he was struck on his left thumb by
- 42:58Speaker 2: one hundred and six mile per hour line drive back
- 43:01Speaker 2: in early I think it was actually June first against
- 43:04Speaker 2: the Cardinals. He returned a week later, pitched pretty well
- 43:07Speaker 2: until the final day of the month, but then struggled
- 43:11Speaker 2: to the end of the first half and missed the
- 43:13Speaker 2: All Star Game with some back tightness, and then he
- 43:16Speaker 2: missed over a month with backspasms. The guy has had
- 43:19Speaker 2: quite a health journey this season, and I think if
- 43:24Speaker 2: there's one pitcher though, that can actually get back to it,
- 43:28Speaker 2: because he doesn't seem like he's ever phased by anything,
- 43:30Speaker 2: it could be Ranger Swarez. And I'm like, I'm holding
- 43:33Speaker 2: out that hope Land that you know what all that
- 43:35Speaker 2: he has been through from a physical standpoint this season,
- 43:39Speaker 2: that you know he's able to start that clean slate
- 43:40Speaker 2: we're just talking about, this is a clean slate postseason.
- 43:43Speaker 2: These guys reset in terms of their stats, just resetting
- 43:47Speaker 2: in terms of their psyche as well. If there's one
- 43:50Speaker 2: guy I think that's able to do, that's probably Ranger Swarez.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, we talked about the bye and
- 43:56Speaker 3: does that hurt the Phillies and all I mean, he's
- 43:59Speaker 3: a guy that you could easy say it could help
- 44:01Speaker 3: because he's the guy that could probably stand to you know,
- 44:05Speaker 3: you know, just have another couple of days off. It
- 44:08Speaker 3: could only help him. So hopefully, you know, with regard
- 44:11Speaker 3: to him, that it does end up help him.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a good top three list, buddy, that
- 44:15Speaker 2: was good. You got anything else here before I let
- 44:18Speaker 2: you go and we get to the interview.
- 44:19Speaker 3: This week, not sports related, just going to plug something
- 44:23Speaker 3: that I enjoyed it. Really people will if you live
- 44:28Speaker 3: in the Philadelphia area, you've heard of WXPN's University of
- 44:31Speaker 3: Pennsylvania's radio station. Every year they do a list eight
- 44:35Speaker 3: hundred and eighty five greatest whatever. I know you're a
- 44:38Speaker 3: big music list fan, Jeff, I definitely am as well.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Last year, for example, was like the eight hundred and
- 44:43Speaker 3: eighty five Greatest Songs by Women. This year's is going
- 44:47Speaker 3: to be eight hundred and eighty five greatest Songs of
- 44:49Speaker 3: the twenty first century. And you can go on their website.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I think it's WXPN dot org and you can, like
- 44:56Speaker 3: right now, you can do like your own top ten list.
- 44:58Speaker 3: It's it's listener. You know, it's listener. You know driven
- 45:01Speaker 3: you know, voting thing, so you put in your ten
- 45:04Speaker 3: and they tabulate them over the next month or so,
- 45:06Speaker 3: and then that usually gets played eight hundred and eighty
- 45:09Speaker 3: five song countdown gets played I think in early December
- 45:13Speaker 3: is when they do it. So yeah, you can go
- 45:16Speaker 3: on there right now. And I got to think about it.
- 45:18Speaker 3: I got to really think about what songs I'm going
- 45:20Speaker 3: to have in there. But yeah, so that's out there
- 45:23Speaker 3: if you want to do it.
- 45:24Speaker 2: I love you for this, buddy, I'm serious, folks. I
- 45:27Speaker 2: had no idea Leen was going to promo this, and
- 45:29Speaker 2: I mean it's music, it's lists. I love it.
- 45:33Speaker 3: I mean it's everything that our group of friends talking about.
- 45:36Speaker 3: So yeah, why wouldn't you.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I love it? All right, man, Well thank you for that. Yeah,
- 45:40Speaker 2: everybody go over to WXPN and let's get this done here.
- 45:46Speaker 3: And you can do that and listen. And that's like
- 45:49Speaker 3: even if you're I know, they have an app, so
- 45:51Speaker 3: if you don't don't live in the area, you can
- 45:53Speaker 3: still you know, listen to whatever app is on the
- 45:55Speaker 3: phone there.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Nice.
- 45:57Speaker 3: But yeah, so yeah, it's I don't know, I like
- 46:00Speaker 3: music list so I figured I enjoy it every year,
- 46:02Speaker 3: so I might as well just mention it.
- 46:04Speaker 2: And we love criticizing music lists too, and we'll do
- 46:08Speaker 2: that too, absolutely absolutely, all right, buddy, I'm gonna let
- 46:12Speaker 2: you go. Folks. We are gonna take a break, and
- 46:13Speaker 2: when we get back, we got more Phillies talk on
- 46:16Speaker 2: the way.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Stick with us.
- 46:18Speaker 2: All right, we are back. Let's get to more Phillies
- 46:21Speaker 2: talk here as this postseason for this team is almost underway.
- 46:25Speaker 2: It's what we're throwing down on the table and now
- 46:29Speaker 2: on the table joining us to continue with this Phillies
- 46:35Speaker 2: postseason preview. Absolutely love having him on the show. From
- 46:39Speaker 2: that Balls out of here dot com, we've got Eric Mooretelly, Buddy,
- 46:42Speaker 2: how you.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Doing, man, I'm doing well, Jeff doing well. Just waiting
- 46:46Speaker 4: for uh to see the Phillies' opponent's going to be here.
- 46:48Speaker 2: I know, I'm waiting with baited breath and I just
- 46:53Speaker 2: and the expectations are just so high for this team
- 46:55Speaker 2: at this point. I'm I'm kind of scared about it,
- 46:59Speaker 2: to be honest with you. I'm kind of nervous, you know.
- 47:01Speaker 2: But the expectations that we have on this team. You
- 47:05Speaker 2: read just about every article, Eric, you are talking to friends,
- 47:09Speaker 2: you're talking to family members and it's like, if it's
- 47:11Speaker 2: not World Series this year, then it was a failure
- 47:15Speaker 2: of a season. I don't necessarily think that, and there
- 47:17Speaker 2: are other people that don't necessarily think that.
- 47:19Speaker 1: But like the expectations are.
- 47:20Speaker 4: So high, Yeah, they're they're really high. I mean, you know,
- 47:24Speaker 4: when you're finished with the second best record in baseball,
- 47:28Speaker 4: people are going to have expectations. But you know, anything
- 47:31Speaker 4: can happen. We just saw, you know what happened recently
- 47:34Speaker 4: with the Astros getting knocked out early. Yeah, so Tigers
- 47:38Speaker 4: were a hot team coming in and that's all that
- 47:40Speaker 4: it really takes sometimes. So we just got to hope
- 47:42Speaker 4: that you know, this little layoff here and there isn't
- 47:45Speaker 4: going to hurt them or anything or slow them down,
- 47:47Speaker 4: and they're going to be able to get rolling as
- 47:49Speaker 4: soon as Saturday comes around.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right, Well let's continue. Len and I were
- 47:53Speaker 2: talking earlier. We had our top three list of things
- 47:56Speaker 2: that we're going to be looking for in terms of
- 47:59Speaker 2: this post season with this Phillies team. I really want
- 48:02Speaker 2: to get into some pitching with you right off the
- 48:04Speaker 2: bat here to talk about what we're gonna see here.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Zach Wheeler arguably has had his best season ever pitching
- 48:10Speaker 2: twenty twenty one was fantastic, of course, but right now
- 48:14Speaker 2: this season, the regular season, I should say two point
- 48:16Speaker 2: five to seven ERA, a zero point nine to six whip,
- 48:20Speaker 2: and six point three hits per nine innings. I mean,
- 48:23Speaker 2: fantastic by any stretch.
- 48:25Speaker 1: And the one.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Thing that he can't control, Eric is whether or not
- 48:30Speaker 2: he wins the cy Young But what he can control
- 48:34Speaker 2: is what comes next as one of the better postseason
- 48:36Speaker 2: pitchers the game of baseball has ever seen. So as
- 48:40Speaker 2: we're talking about Zach Wheeler thinking about what we are
- 48:42Speaker 2: going to see from him during this postseason. We know
- 48:45Speaker 2: how critical he is on the mound, but how do
- 48:48Speaker 2: you see Wheeler taking over during this postseason and what
- 48:52Speaker 2: momentum he can actually give this team?
- 48:55Speaker 4: Yeah, Jeff, I mean, I think when Wheeler's on the mound,
- 48:57Speaker 4: it's almost kind of like a must wing game, right,
- 49:00Speaker 4: don't want to waste one of his starts. He is
- 49:02Speaker 4: one of you know, he's been a dominant postseason pitcher
- 49:05Speaker 4: in the short time it's happened. But over sixty three
- 49:08Speaker 4: innings over the last two years, two point four two
- 49:10Speaker 4: ERA and an seven three whip, he's limiting. He limits
- 49:13Speaker 4: guys getting on base. You know, I know there's talk
- 49:16Speaker 4: about how he doesn't like the extra rest. There's nothing
- 49:18Speaker 4: he can really do here, so hopefully the extra ress
- 49:20Speaker 4: you know, helps him, helps him, you know, stay healthy.
- 49:24Speaker 4: But I mean, the team's gonna rely on him. They're
- 49:27Speaker 4: going to kind of go when he goes, and you
- 49:29Speaker 4: you can't waste a good Wheeler start, yes, you know,
- 49:32Speaker 4: poor offense or a bullpen implosion, so they kind of
- 49:35Speaker 4: really have to rally behind what you expect to be
- 49:38Speaker 4: a really good start from Zach Wheeler, assuming and assuming
- 49:40Speaker 4: you know it's gonna be Game one again.
- 49:42Speaker 2: He's going to provide that momentum for this team, I think,
- 49:45Speaker 2: right out of the gate. And then Aaron Nola he's
- 49:47Speaker 2: gonna have to continue with that momentum as well. And
- 49:50Speaker 2: of course we know Aaron Nola and what we've seen
- 49:52Speaker 2: over the years from him. It is up and down,
- 49:54Speaker 2: mostly ups in my opinion. But Zach Wheeler really is
- 49:58Speaker 2: key right out of the gate to giving the team
- 50:00Speaker 2: some momentum. But as we're moving along here, you know,
- 50:03Speaker 2: Rob Thompson expressed his confidence in Ranger Suarez heading into
- 50:07Speaker 2: this postseason. As you know, Eric and you know I
- 50:11Speaker 2: wish we all had that confidence here. Thompson thinks that
- 50:15Speaker 2: with some rest, Ranger can bounce back. Usually there's only
- 50:18Speaker 2: a need for you know, three starting pitchers, and the
- 50:21Speaker 2: Phillies are of course set there. But I'm wondering, you know,
- 50:25Speaker 2: if Ranger Swarrez is put into certain situations during this postseason,
- 50:29Speaker 2: I'm wondering, what kind of Ranger swar is you think
- 50:31Speaker 2: that we are going to see this postseason? What are
- 50:34Speaker 2: your thoughts here?
- 50:35Speaker 4: So it's a really interesting question because we've seen what
- 50:38Speaker 4: Ranger does in the postseason. We've seen you know, postseason,
- 50:41Speaker 4: regular season, doesn't matter. He is always as cool and
- 50:43Speaker 4: calm and collected as they come. You know, he has
- 50:47Speaker 4: had a rough second half, There's no two ways about that.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Uh.
- 50:51Speaker 4: Definitely makes you wonder a little bit how he's going
- 50:54Speaker 4: to be in a postseason situation. Uh, you know, he's
- 50:57Speaker 4: had rest, Like they gave him time after the All
- 50:59Speaker 4: Star break. He had the I think it was a
- 51:00Speaker 4: four arm issue, so he was he was shut down
- 51:02Speaker 4: for a little bit, you know, the velocity dip and
- 51:05Speaker 4: all that stuff. It kind of looks like he doesn't
- 51:08Speaker 4: have his best stuff right now. But it's happened to
- 51:10Speaker 4: him in years past, and he comes out and pitches
- 51:12Speaker 4: well in the postseason. Now, I was reading some stuff
- 51:14Speaker 4: that came out about the Interest Squad game today and
- 51:18Speaker 4: I think he went he had a really efficient two innings,
- 51:20Speaker 4: twenty one pitches, and Thompson afterwards said he looked really good.
- 51:24Speaker 4: So you know, now, again the stakes are less high
- 51:27Speaker 4: in a situation like that. But with Ranger, you know,
- 51:31Speaker 4: there's never a time where I'm nervous about the moment
- 51:33Speaker 4: getting to him because he just doesn't seem to ever
- 51:35Speaker 4: show that he's in a big moment, which is always
- 51:38Speaker 4: kind of, you know, fun to watch. But you know, again,
- 51:42Speaker 4: like talking about postseason success, he's been using a lot
- 51:45Speaker 4: of different roles before in the postseason. You remember the
- 51:48Speaker 4: beddle of the Bank game when he was called in
- 51:50Speaker 4: to close it out. He's been used to start, and
- 51:52Speaker 4: overall in thirty three and third innings pitch he has
- 51:54Speaker 4: like a one six two ERA and and a sub
- 51:57Speaker 4: one whip, So you know, it might be one of
- 51:59Speaker 4: the things where the extra time off could help him.
- 52:02Speaker 4: And you never really know what could happen in the postseason.
- 52:05Speaker 4: He could flip a switch, but I think the team
- 52:07Speaker 4: is going to rely on him because of the way
- 52:09Speaker 4: that it's set up. It looks like they're probably going
- 52:11Speaker 4: to need a fourth starter in the division series here,
- 52:14Speaker 4: and as we move on to, you know, the Best
- 52:16Speaker 4: of Seventh series, assuming they do move on, they're definitely
- 52:19Speaker 4: going to need him. So his contributions in the postseason
- 52:23Speaker 4: kind of need to be more on point with what
- 52:25Speaker 4: we've seen in the past rather than what we've seen
- 52:27Speaker 4: recently in the regular season.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Absolutely, again, folks, we're talking to Eric Moritelli from that
- 52:32Speaker 2: balls out of here dot com. He's a contributor over there. Eric,
- 52:35Speaker 2: Where can everybody else find you on the interwebs out
- 52:37Speaker 2: there on Twitter slash x. Think you're doing some stuff
- 52:39Speaker 2: for the Philly Sports Network too every now and again?
- 52:41Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, So on Twitter slash x, I am at
- 52:46Speaker 4: Eric Underscore Moritelli, And yeah, for Philly Sports Network, I've
- 52:49Speaker 4: been contributing some flyers work over there. So as baseball
- 52:53Speaker 4: season starts winding down and hockey season starts picking up,
- 52:57Speaker 4: I'll have more stuff going on over there too. So great,
- 52:59Speaker 4: seem great team of hockey writers over there as well.
- 53:02Speaker 2: Awesome, All right, Well, I still want to talk about
- 53:04Speaker 2: pitching here before we get into some batting and what
- 53:06Speaker 2: we're gonna see from guys like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber,
- 53:10Speaker 2: and Trey Turner. Because I'm generally happy. I think we're
- 53:12Speaker 2: all generally happy with what we've seen from this bullpen
- 53:16Speaker 2: this season. Of course, again there's been ups and downs,
- 53:18Speaker 2: mostly ups and positive trends with the bullpen. Arms reports
- 53:22Speaker 2: are that Spencer Turnbull he may also come back for
- 53:26Speaker 2: this postseason. We're not one hundred percent sure yet as
- 53:29Speaker 2: of us recording this, which I think would certainly be
- 53:32Speaker 2: an interesting aspect of what this bullpen may look like.
- 53:35Speaker 2: But I'm wondering, Eric, is there and under the radar
- 53:39Speaker 2: concern that you have with regard to this bullpen heading
- 53:42Speaker 2: into this postseason again, when the trends have been positive
- 53:46Speaker 2: here with this team a Ryan Kirkering of course has
- 53:49Speaker 2: had some struggles here and there as well. But is
- 53:51Speaker 2: there an under the radar concern that you have with
- 53:52Speaker 2: this bullpen?
- 53:54Speaker 3: I think a little bit.
- 53:55Speaker 4: And it's actually probably which is a bit concerning, probably
- 53:59Speaker 4: maybe the most important guy in the bullpen right now, Carlos. Yeah,
- 54:04Speaker 4: he had you know, he's not had like a blow
- 54:07Speaker 4: up game, but He just seems to allow a base
- 54:09Speaker 4: runner and struggle with command every now and then, which
- 54:11Speaker 4: is terrifying because it seems like he's getting the ninth
- 54:13Speaker 4: inning role just pretty consistently at this point. So, you know,
- 54:18Speaker 4: I trust a lot of other guys in his bullpen,
- 54:20Speaker 4: like Kirk Erring has been really good recently, strom Hoffman,
- 54:23Speaker 4: even Alvarado's kind of turns it out and it's coming
- 54:25Speaker 4: back from the restricted list. But yeah, I really like
- 54:30Speaker 4: where the bullpen's at. There's you know, the talk of
- 54:32Speaker 4: you know, having the twelve pitchers depending on what happens here.
- 54:35Speaker 4: Return Bull, you know, he hasn't really thrown. He was
- 54:38Speaker 4: erratic in his in the game today, so we don't
- 54:41Speaker 4: really know what we're going to see there, But the
- 54:43Speaker 4: other choices aren't great. It's gonna you know, it could
- 54:45Speaker 4: be Tylan Walker. Would I rather see an erratic Turnbull
- 54:48Speaker 4: than what we're pretty sure we're gonna get with Walker.
- 54:51Speaker 4: I don't really know, but I think, you know, the
- 54:53Speaker 4: biggest thing here is is when guys are going to
- 54:55Speaker 4: pitch in big spots.
- 54:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:56Speaker 4: We saw Josh Hater blow it in the final game
- 55:00Speaker 4: of the Wildcard series, and you know, he's getting paid
- 55:03Speaker 4: I think like nineteen million dollars a year, So it's
- 55:05Speaker 4: possible it can happen to anyone. But you know, you
- 55:07Speaker 4: really need to rely on the back end of this bullpen.
- 55:10Speaker 4: And I think, you know, we can all probably say
- 55:13Speaker 4: we trust Hoffman, strom Uh and even Kirkering to an extent,
- 55:17Speaker 4: but I think Estevez is while he you know, he
- 55:20Speaker 4: has the talent and he has, you know, kind of
- 55:23Speaker 4: the pedigree I think to be a really solid postseason closer,
- 55:26Speaker 4: he has not been there and he seems to kind of,
- 55:30Speaker 4: you know, make make make a sweat out the ninth
- 55:32Speaker 4: inning a little bit.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:33Speaker 2: Absolutely, I'm kind of you know, I wasn't playing on
- 55:35Speaker 2: bringing this up, but I'm kind of surprised Jeff Hoffman
- 55:37Speaker 2: hasn't got hasn't gotten like a contract extension.
- 55:40Speaker 1: Yeah, at this point. Has that been a.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Little surprising for you too, considering his consistency and what
- 55:46Speaker 2: he's done this season?
- 55:47Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I mean since he's come to the Phillies,
- 55:49Speaker 4: he's done nothing but but perform when act. Yeah, it's
- 55:53Speaker 4: one of the things where I'm kind of I wish
- 55:55Speaker 4: there was a contract extension in place, but I know
- 55:58Speaker 4: Dom Brows he kind of has that mindset of not
- 56:01Speaker 4: negotiating in season if it's up to the team to
- 56:05Speaker 4: bring it up. Hoffman's voice that he wants to stay.
- 56:08Speaker 4: So I wouldn't be surprised that they started talking after
- 56:10Speaker 4: this season was over. But either way, Hoffman, you know,
- 56:13Speaker 4: made himself a good amount of money these last two
- 56:15Speaker 4: seasons with the Philly Yes, whether he comes back here
- 56:17Speaker 4: or pitches elsewhere.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Absolutely, All right, Well let's get into some of the
- 56:21Speaker 2: bats here, because the pressure is definitely going to be
- 56:24Speaker 2: on a few batters in the postseason, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber,
- 56:29Speaker 2: Trey Turner. And while of course there will be pressure
- 56:32Speaker 2: on all of these guys batting to come out strong
- 56:36Speaker 2: and to remain consistent, you know, I'm wondering, is there
- 56:39Speaker 2: someone who has a ton of pressure on them who
- 56:41Speaker 2: isn't necessarily getting talked about enough in your opinion? Eric,
- 56:45Speaker 2: As we're looking at the bats and what they may
- 56:46Speaker 2: produce in this postseason.
- 56:48Speaker 4: So a guy that I was kind of looking at
- 56:51Speaker 4: is Alex Bone. He has reverly been getting talked about
- 56:54Speaker 4: a ton, but his final month of the season was
- 56:57Speaker 4: was really not good.
- 56:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 57:00Speaker 4: Yeah, the last month he hit like two seventeen. His
- 57:04Speaker 4: last fifteen games of the season, he hit I think
- 57:06Speaker 4: one seventy nine. So, you know, he had a really
- 57:09Speaker 4: good regular season for the Phillies, kind of a guy
- 57:12Speaker 4: that I think probably exceeded most expectations. So I think
- 57:16Speaker 4: because he was able to do that and kind of
- 57:18Speaker 4: helped sustain this offense, I think there is a little
- 57:20Speaker 4: pressure on him. If guys, you know, just to put
- 57:22Speaker 4: the ball in play, If guys like you know, Harper,
- 57:24Speaker 4: Turner and Sharber are are striking out a little bit
- 57:27Speaker 4: more or not getting on base, You're going to have
- 57:29Speaker 4: to supplement that offense somewhere. And I think Boem's a
- 57:33Speaker 4: big guy from there, another guy I think that they
- 57:36Speaker 4: need to kind of rely on. But I don't really
- 57:38Speaker 4: see it happening as Bryson Stott just because he has
- 57:40Speaker 4: not really had any sort of turnaround at all this season.
- 57:44Speaker 4: He you know, coming into the season, just as approach
- 57:47Speaker 4: to the plate, I always thought he was kind of
- 57:49Speaker 4: the one destined for the breakout season here, and it
- 57:52Speaker 4: just kind of never came to fruition, And every time
- 57:54Speaker 4: he thought he was starting to hit out of it,
- 57:55Speaker 4: he goes back into a plump. So I don't know
- 57:57Speaker 4: if we could say there's a ton of pressure in
- 57:59Speaker 4: because I think the expectations right now are kind of
- 58:01Speaker 4: at a lower point where I think with Boom, the
- 58:03Speaker 4: season he had puts higher expectations on him, but the
- 58:07Speaker 4: way he finished out the regular season could raise the eyebrows.
- 58:12Speaker 2: It's interesting you mentioned Bryson Stott because before you jumped
- 58:15Speaker 2: on and my co host Lenn and I were specifically
- 58:18Speaker 2: talking about we were doing our top three list of
- 58:21Speaker 2: what we're really going to be looking for during this
- 58:23Speaker 2: Phillies postseason here, and one of them for me was
- 58:26Speaker 2: Bryson Stott and whether or not he was going to
- 58:28Speaker 2: be able to at least perform a little bit better
- 58:31Speaker 2: than the regular season here in the playoffs. And quite
- 58:35Speaker 2: frankly too, another aspect of what this Phillies team I
- 58:39Speaker 2: think may need to do is that they're going to
- 58:43Speaker 2: need to cover for each other. They're going to need
- 58:45Speaker 2: to cover for each other. And it's something I said
- 58:47Speaker 2: earlier too, maybe maybe just to get your take on,
- 58:50Speaker 2: because not everybody in the lineup, you know, we haven't
- 58:54Speaker 2: gotten to a point where everybody's been hot at the
- 58:56Speaker 2: same time, right, So the Phillies are going to need
- 58:59Speaker 2: to cover for each other. Kyle Schwarber isn't necessarily doing
- 59:02Speaker 2: all that well, the Nick cassianis needs to step up.
- 59:05Speaker 2: If Bryson Scott is not doing all that well, you know,
- 59:07Speaker 2: Trey Turner needs to step up, or vice versa. I
- 59:09Speaker 2: should say, if Trey Turner's not doing well, Bryson Scott's
- 59:12Speaker 2: gonna need to step up, or Alec Bam may need
- 59:14Speaker 2: to step up, like you're talking about here. I think
- 59:17Speaker 2: the fact that this team is going to need to
- 59:18Speaker 2: cover for each other at times, perhaps in certain games,
- 59:21Speaker 2: I think that's a bit of an under the radar
- 59:23Speaker 2: storyline that we need to keep our eyes on.
- 59:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely, I mean everyone has kind of, you know,
- 59:29Speaker 4: their own little role, right. You have your superstars kind
- 59:31Speaker 4: of toward the top of the lineup, and just like it,
- 59:33Speaker 4: you know, just like every lineup that's constructed in Major
- 59:36Speaker 4: League Baseball, you have these role guys, right, Yeah, and
- 59:39Speaker 4: your superstars are not always gonna come through, right. We've
- 59:42Speaker 4: seen it happen before with all of our guys at
- 59:44Speaker 4: different points. So yeah, you really need to rely on
- 59:47Speaker 4: some of those back end players stepping it up. Like
- 59:50Speaker 4: a guy who I don't have any real expectations for
- 59:53Speaker 4: but think about how bad he heard us in the
- 59:56Speaker 4: postseason last year, specifically the NLCS against Diamondback was Johann
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: Rojas R. I mean, I don't believe anyone's expecting a
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: lot offensively from him, yeah, but just not striking out
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: in big spots, getting on base and making things happen
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: with his speed. So everyone has kind of a role
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: that they need to kind of fulfill because guys are
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: going to go into funks. It's just it's the way
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: baseball works. And you just hope that the Phillies are
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: you know, using this time because they kind of the
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: whole offense was really i would say unassuming the end
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: of the regular season. Really most of the second half
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: it was very up and down with the offense. So
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: hopefully this can kind of be like a reset button
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: and we can get some of these guys hot at
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: the right at the same time, because you know you're
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: going to see great pitching in the postseason. That's just
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: how it goes. That's how all these teams got here.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: And you can't have a bad offense against bad pitching
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: and then go into a postseason with dominant pitching and
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: have that same bad offense. So they got to change
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: their approach. They got to put the ball in play,
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: limit the strikeouts, and just try to get contributions from
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: as many guys as possible.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Yeah, slotely, if the bottom of the order has to
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: play some small ball, we'll have them do it. I'm all.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I'm all for it. I'm all for it, all right.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: So just some general questions here to finish out our conversation, Eric,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: because I've been thinking to myself where this team may
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: struggle the most. Have some ideas, but I want to
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: hear from you. Where do you think this Phillies team
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: is going to struggle the most in this postseason?
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: So I think if I had to put my finger
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: on it, I'm just right now. My trust in the
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: offense is very shaky. Okay, I hope I'm wrong because
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: we have the pieces there. It's just a matter of
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: getting it together and getting those situational hits. When you
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: get when you have first and third with with with
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: no out, you got to get a run in, like
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: when you have a leadoff double that guy has to score.
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: And how many times this season have we seen that
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: not happen? And in the postseason, you can't waste opportunities
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: like that, every run matters, and it's so much more
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: magnified than it is during a regular season game because
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: you know that one run could be know your ticket
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: home or it could be your ticket to the next series.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: So I think for me, if I was if I
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: was going to guess, I would think that if there's
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: gonna be a struggle, it's going to be the offense,
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: all right.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: And on the flip side of that coin, where do
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: you think this team is going to be absolutely dominant
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: during this postseason?
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: So I love our top three starters. I think you
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: got Wheeler, Nola, Sanchez. Any combination of that is just
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: is really good. It matches up with just about any
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: rotation in the playoffs right now in baseball. So you
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: put any of those guys on the mound, you give
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: this team a chance to win. Also, I love our
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: back end of the bullpen. Having like four or five
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: guys depending on people's trust in Alvarado right now is
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: just such a weapon to have. You know, we saw
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: last year how that kind of you know came back
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: to bite us. We were using Ryan Kirkering, who had
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: pitched three regular season major league innings in his entire life, right,
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: and he's getting put in these huge against the diamondback
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: he loses control, And obviously you can't be mad at
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: the kid. The kid's twenty two years old, does not
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: have a lot of experience. But then you have Craig
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Kimberle on the other hand, who has a ton of
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: major league experience and couldn't shut the door. So you
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: have what I think is probably the most effectively assembled
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: Phillies bullpen in a long time, and I'm really excited
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: about that because you have guys you can pull in
