- 0:04Speaker 1: because it's humid today or it's been humid, that's for sure.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I love this song, love this jam. And another guy
- 0:09Speaker 1: I love talking to is our good friend Andrew Larson.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Of course, Andrew comes to us from Larsen Home Services.

- 0:26Speaker 1: at six oh eight five three five forty three forty
- 0:28Speaker 1: three as mentioned. Joining us this morning is Andrew Larson. Andrew,
- 0:31Speaker 1: how are you doing this week?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Well? Do I ever say I'm doing bad?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I've never known you that is, Well, you've got kids,
- 0:40Speaker 1: so yeah, you got.
- 0:41Speaker 2: You never know? Yeah, you never know, right.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You never yeah, exactly, you never know what you're waking
- 0:46Speaker 1: up to each each morning. Well, it's great to talk
- 0:48Speaker 1: with you, and uh, Andrew. We're going to talk about insulation.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And I think a lot of folks often think insulation
- 0:54Speaker 1: and winter, but we're talking installation in summer for really
- 0:59Speaker 1: good reasons, aren't we.
- 1:01Speaker 2: We are you know, insulation insulation. The advertisements start coming
- 1:07Speaker 2: out more in the fall, and all the companies are
- 1:09Speaker 2: pushing it, and you know, and it makes sense. You know, insulation.
- 1:13Speaker 2: It's cold outside, this warm, fuzzy some cases, itchy blanket
- 1:20Speaker 2: wrapped around you, and nobody talks about it in the summer.
- 1:25Speaker 2: But what we know from our years of experience and
- 1:28Speaker 2: the thousands of insulation jobs that we've done and just
- 1:31Speaker 2: sheer home building science, is that insulation is actually more
- 1:35Speaker 2: important in the summer when it's hot than it is
- 1:40Speaker 2: in the winter, which is insane to a lot of people.
- 1:44Speaker 2: They don't it's hard to grasp. But insulation is rated
- 1:50Speaker 2: on in our value and where we live, in our
- 1:54Speaker 2: region it is. It's really recommended to have an our
- 1:57Speaker 2: value of insulation. And what our values see aands for
- 2:00Speaker 2: is the measure of how well or how slow I
- 2:05Speaker 2: should say, the transfer of heat is allowed to happen.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So the faster heat can transfer through the insulation, the
- 2:16Speaker 2: lower our value it's going to have. And we build
- 2:19Speaker 2: the our value up by putting more inches of insulation
- 2:23Speaker 2: in a space like an attic. And we all know
- 2:27Speaker 2: that well, So we got to talk about No, I
- 2:30Speaker 2: could get real scientific, I don't. I don't want to
- 2:33Speaker 2: get all nerdy but it's actually a funny story. I
- 2:37Speaker 2: was at school with a school with my daughter about
- 2:40Speaker 2: a year ago. She had to go in and do
- 2:41Speaker 2: a makeup makeup science lab and they were studying the
- 2:47Speaker 2: three ways of heat transfer, conduction, convection, and radiation. And
- 2:52Speaker 2: the teacher started talking about that and I was like,
- 2:53Speaker 2: that's cool, and he goes, nobody's ever said that before.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I was like, no, it's super cool. So then we
- 3:00Speaker 2: started talking about insulation. I said, we deal with every
- 3:02Speaker 2: I said, we deal with conduction, convection, and radiation every day.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And he's like, you still remember it from middle school.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I was like, no, I don't. I learned it when
- 3:10Speaker 2: I got older. I don't remember it. But anyway, what
- 3:15Speaker 2: happens in the summer is if anybody's ever stuck their
- 3:18Speaker 2: head up in the attic of their home in the summer,
- 3:20Speaker 2: it's one hundred and thirty one hundred and forty degrees, yes,
- 3:25Speaker 2: you know, we have ventilation from the sofa to the
- 3:27Speaker 2: top of the roof. It's meant to cool your roof.
- 3:29Speaker 2: It it really doesn't matter. When it's this hot, it's
- 3:34Speaker 2: going to be extremely hot in that attic. And what
- 3:37Speaker 2: happens is that if we don't have the correct OUR value,
- 3:40Speaker 2: which where we live it's recommended to have anywhere from
- 3:43Speaker 2: an R forty nine to an R sixty. We don't
- 3:47Speaker 2: do anything less than an OUR sixty because just why not.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I mean, it's just it doesn't make sense to skimp on,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know, a few inches of insulation, so in our sixty.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So what it's doing is it's stopping that one hundred
- 4:01Speaker 2: and forty degree attic. It's slowing the transfer of that heat.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Because I'd say, just the other day, one of my
- 4:08Speaker 2: reps was doing an estimate in a house and the
- 4:11Speaker 2: home owners like, yeah, he's like, are upstairs it gets
- 4:14Speaker 2: so hot, like we can barely use it in the summer,
- 4:16Speaker 2: And they had AC, but it couldn't keep up. They
- 4:19Speaker 2: set the AC at seventy two at night to sleep,
- 4:23Speaker 2: and those rooms upstairs were like seventy eight seventy nine degrees. Well,
- 4:28Speaker 2: they only had three inches of insulation in their attic,
- 4:31Speaker 2: which is roughly like a R two. I mean it
- 4:36Speaker 2: was super old and tore up so almost nothing. So
- 4:39Speaker 2: that ceiling up in their attic was like a radiant heater.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So that room they're trying to cool the seventy two degrees.
- 4:47Speaker 2: We hit the thermal imager. This is midday, so it's hot,
- 4:51Speaker 2: but we hit the ceiling with the thermal imager and
- 4:54Speaker 2: the ceiling was like ninety six degrees. Well, how's that
- 4:59Speaker 2: gonna work. It's never gonna work. You're never gonna cool
- 5:02Speaker 2: that room down. So if they had adequate insulation up there,
- 5:06Speaker 2: that just slowed that you've got. Now you've got seventeen
- 5:10Speaker 2: inches of beautiful I think, beautiful sewn, beautiful insulation separating
- 5:18Speaker 2: your drywall ceiling from the super super super hot attic.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And once we put that in there, that ceiling is
- 5:26Speaker 2: going to get back down to the tempt that we're
- 5:28Speaker 2: that we're looking to keep the room at. So, but
- 5:30Speaker 2: in the winter it doesn't work the same way because
- 5:35Speaker 2: in the winter we're heating the house, the heat rises,
- 5:39Speaker 2: You've already got a barrier of insulation up there. So,
- 5:43Speaker 2: because the difference between a convection or conduction heat loss,
- 5:48Speaker 2: which is what happens in the winter when we lose
- 5:50Speaker 2: our heat and radiant radiant slower, So like once all
- 5:53Speaker 2: that insulation heats up and your ceiling heats up, it's
- 5:57Speaker 2: really hard to cool it down. So we're it's a
- 6:00Speaker 2: slower process in the summer, but we need the insulation
- 6:03Speaker 2: to stop it. Now. In the winter, it's much more
- 6:06Speaker 2: important to have proper air ceiling, so we're keeping that
- 6:10Speaker 2: heat in the house and not letting it through stack
- 6:14Speaker 2: effect go out. So we try to educate people and
- 6:20Speaker 2: on the importance of it in the summer, because in
- 6:22Speaker 2: the summer our insulation slows way down. It's just nobody
- 6:28Speaker 2: thinks about it, but it's it's it's much more important
- 6:31Speaker 2: in the summer than it is in the winter. It's
- 6:34Speaker 2: pretty our insallation work in the winter.
- 6:37Speaker 1: It's and it's it's when you talk about that, it's
- 6:39Speaker 1: pretty amazing. I think that, and I get it. A
- 6:41Speaker 1: lot of us, you know, school was a long time ago,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and we tend to forget some of these things. And
- 6:47Speaker 1: it's pretty amazing to me when we when we think
- 6:49Speaker 1: about this stuff. A lot of this these concepts are
- 6:52Speaker 1: are really nothing. I was reading a story the other
- 6:56Speaker 1: day about I think it's called like the Caveman Method
- 6:59Speaker 1: for keeping your house cool. I saw a couple of
- 7:01Speaker 1: publications actually talking about it, and it was yeah, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: they're they're they're talking about really the Caveman method for
- 7:07Speaker 1: keeping your your house cool is is really sealing it in,
- 7:11Speaker 1: sealing it off from the eat kind of like a
- 7:13Speaker 1: cave keeps cool as much as you can do, like
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know, blinds and insulation and all that stuff. And Andrew,
- 7:18Speaker 1: when we talk about about these about these ways to
- 7:21Speaker 1: keep your house cool, there's there's obviously significant benefits. One,
- 7:25Speaker 1: your house is more comfortable. You mentioned you know, people
- 7:27Speaker 1: with especially upper spaces that tend to get tend never
- 7:30Speaker 1: to never to get fully cool. All that stuff that
- 7:33Speaker 1: comforts important. Keeping energy bills is low and important. But also,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and I don't know if it's ever been studied, and
- 7:38Speaker 1: you would know, is the idea of like your your
- 7:43Speaker 1: central air kicking in and turning off and turning back
- 7:46Speaker 1: on again. I can't imagine what that does to that system.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And you think about longevity and cost and efficiency, the
- 7:53Speaker 1: more you can reduce as far as overall taxing burden,
- 7:57Speaker 1: especially that on and off on those systems, it's really
- 8:00Speaker 1: going to prolong the life of those of those things,
- 8:02Speaker 1: which I don't know, I haven't had, thank goodness, knock
- 8:04Speaker 1: on wood, haven't had to replace a central air conditioning
- 8:08Speaker 1: unit or a furnace. I'm gonna guess those things aren't cheap.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And if you can put that it can be as
- 8:14Speaker 2: much as a new roof. Yeah, really expensive. Yeah, so
- 8:19Speaker 2: depending on how bigger house is, yeah, they can cost
- 8:21Speaker 2: as much as a roof. So yeah, we want we
- 8:24Speaker 2: want to cut down on that on off, on on
- 8:27Speaker 2: on off of all of our ace h VAC units.
- 8:31Speaker 2: But again, just remember we've got to look at the
- 8:35Speaker 2: way we lose and gain heat. In the summer, we're
- 8:37Speaker 2: trying to keep the heat from coming in and in
- 8:41Speaker 2: the winter we're trying to keep the heat from going out.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And it's two totally different processes and there's different materials
- 8:48Speaker 2: that work better for each instance. And with Larsen and
- 8:53Speaker 2: Larson Kenny Home Services, years of doing insulation and we
- 8:59Speaker 2: came up with the Ultimate Addict solution and it addresses
- 9:04Speaker 2: all types of weather in all seasons. There is absolutely
- 9:08Speaker 2: no better way to fix your addict than an Ultimate
- 9:13Speaker 2: Addict solution. It's a one and done. It is the
- 9:16Speaker 2: best way to air seal your addict. It is we
- 9:19Speaker 2: make sure to hit all of the critical details. Just
- 9:22Speaker 2: like a roof, We've got different things we need to
- 9:24Speaker 2: flash in your attic because there's different things mechanical pipes
- 9:28Speaker 2: that get hot, they have to be flashed properly, they
- 9:31Speaker 2: have to use metal on them. Some of them we
- 9:33Speaker 2: have to use different types of insulation that are one
- 9:37Speaker 2: hundred percent fire rated. We have to use fire cock.
- 9:41Speaker 2: So there's critical details that need to be taken care of.
- 9:44Speaker 2: But within the Ultimate Addic solution, it encompasses that entire attic,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and I mean, honestly, it's a travesty that once we
- 9:50Speaker 2: get done with the work, we pretty much seal the
- 9:52Speaker 2: attic off and nobody ever needs to go up there,
- 9:55Speaker 2: you know, unless you need a little storage. There's Ultimate
- 9:58Speaker 2: Addic solutions we can you that have storage platforms right
- 10:04Speaker 2: right next to the scuttle holes, so you can kind
- 10:07Speaker 2: of pop the popular you're at scuttle cover off and
- 10:11Speaker 2: you can keep stuff up there. So there's different ways
- 10:14Speaker 2: for us to do that, so it's not completely unusable.
- 10:17Speaker 2: But once we're done with your addic, it's done the
- 10:19Speaker 2: best way that it can be done. There is no
- 10:22Speaker 2: better way that it can be done.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And the great thing about working with you guys, Andrew
- 10:26Speaker 1: and the team at Lars Home Services, you can come
- 10:28Speaker 1: out and take a look and give people a full
- 10:31Speaker 1: assessment on this, and of course it make that decision.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And I know there's a lot of folks right now
- 10:36Speaker 1: going how can I talk to Andrew? How can I
- 10:38Speaker 1: pick up the phone? What do what's the phone number?
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'll give the phone number because it's six of eight
- 10:41Speaker 1: five three five forty three forty three. That's five three
- 10:44Speaker 1: five forty three forty three. People love hearing this stuff
- 10:46Speaker 1: and they love talking and working with you, Andrew, and
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's a great day to do that. As you mentioned,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you know the type of work that you guys do
- 10:54Speaker 1: when it comes to insulation, when it comes to really
- 10:57Speaker 1: sealing off, that's healing, keeping that high out and that
- 11:00Speaker 1: cold air in and vice versa in the winter months.
- 11:03Speaker 1: What an amazing solution it is with Larsen Home Services.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Great day to give Andrew and the team a call.
