- 0:00If you walked through a department store today and saw the name J.C. Penney, you might think
- 0:17of racks of clothing, sales, signs, maybe even a memory from years gone by.
- 0:24But behind that name is a man, a man who built an empire on one simple sentence of scripture,
- 0:31and then nearly lost everything because he misunderstood it.
- 0:37Listen again to the words of our Lord in Luke 6, 31.
- 0:41And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
- 0:47That verse became the foundation of James Cash Penney's life.
- 0:52I'm Greg Dowdy, and you're listening to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:58Some Christians in history are known by their name, but not by their story.
- 1:03Here on Traveler's Tales, we love bringing those untold moments to light, revealing how
- 1:08God worked through ordinary people in extraordinary ways.
- 1:14Born in 1875 in a small town in Missouri, young J.C. Penney didn't start with wealth.
- 1:21He started with something far more valuable.
- 1:24He was raised in a home where God was real, a praying mother, a father who preached the gospel.
- 1:31Faith wasn't something they talked about on Sundays.
- 1:34It shaped their daily lives.
- 1:36Those early impressions stayed with him.
- 1:39In 1902, with very little to his name, Penney opened a small store in Kemmer, Wyoming.
- 1:45But he wasn't just building a business.
- 1:47He was building it on a principle.
- 1:50It's called the Golden Rule.
- 1:52Treat people right, be honest, give value, do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
- 1:59And God blessed it.
- 2:00That one store became many.
- 2:03The Golden Rule chain was born.
- 2:06In 1913, it became the J.C. Penney Company.
- 2:10Success followed success.
- 2:12Wealth increased, influence expanded.
- 2:15But here's the turning point.
- 2:17By 1929, J.C. Penney was worth $40 million, and within a year, he lost it.
- 2:24The stock market crashed, his fortune vanished, his health broke, his spirit collapsed.
- 2:31And at that moment, when everything outward was gone, he came face to face with a truth
- 2:37he had long avoided.
- 2:39You can live by good principles and still miss a real relationship with God.
- 2:47J.C. Penney later admitted that he had been living off what he called spiritual capital,
- 2:51the faith of his parents, the influence of his upbringing, the residue of truth he had
- 2:57been given as a child.
- 2:59He had morality.
- 3:00He had ethics.
- 3:01He even had scripture.
- 3:03But he didn't have daily fellowship with God.
- 3:07And when life stripped everything away, he realized something powerful.
- 3:12The golden rule is not enough without the God who gave it.
- 3:17Through heartbreak and loss, the Lord brought him back.
- 3:21Penney experienced a true spiritual renewal, not just practicing Christianity, but personally
- 3:27walking with Christ.
- 3:29And God allowed him to rebuild.
- 3:31His business recovered.
- 3:33It grew again, eventually surpassing billions in sales.
- 3:38But more importantly, his life was rebuilt on something deeper than success.
- 3:44He learned to depend on God daily.
- 3:47He once said, it is absurd to pray on rising and consider that that takes care of one's
- 3:54relationship to God for the day.
- 3:56The challenge of living effectively makes it necessary to pray all through the day.
- 4:02In other words, he discovered what 1 Thessalonians 5.17 teaches, pray without ceasing.
- 4:08And also what John 15 reveals, that real life is found in abiding, living in constant fellowship
- 4:16with Christ.
- 4:17Here's the spiritual application for us today.
- 4:21There are many people today, just like J.C. Penney once was.
- 4:26Good people, moral people, principled people.
- 4:30People who know the right things.
- 4:32People who even tried to do the right things, but they were living on borrowed faith.
- 4:38Maybe it's the faith of their parents.
- 4:40Maybe it's the influence of a church.
- 4:42Maybe it's something they learned years ago.
- 4:46But listen carefully.
- 4:47You cannot live today on yesterday's walk with God.
- 4:51God does not want occasional attention.
- 4:53He desires continual, daily fellowship.
- 4:57It is not enough to pray in the morning and forget Him the rest of the day.
- 5:01It's not enough to live by Christian values without living in Christ Himself.
- 5:07The Lord is inviting us into something deeper, a real relationship, a daily dependence, a
- 5:15moment-by-moment walk with Him.
- 5:17So let me ask you, are you just practicing the principles?
- 5:21Or are you walking with the person?
- 5:25Are you living on spiritual leftovers?
- 5:28Or are you feeding daily on the presence of God?
- 5:32Because at the end of the day, success isn't measured by what you build.
- 5:36It's measured by whether you walked with God.
- 5:39The same God who restored J.C. Penney is ready to meet you right where you are today.
- 5:47Thank you for taking time to listen to Traveler's Tales today.
