- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone, and I am so excited to
- 0:23let you guys know that I believe as of today, our podcast is now
- 0:29available on video on Spotify. So if this episode is not a
- 0:35video episode for you on Spotify, then please know there
- 0:39was a glitch. I couldn't figure out how to get
- 0:41the video on Spotify yet, but I will work on it for tomorrow.
- 0:45But if there is a video, then I figured it out and we are live,
- 0:49which is really exciting. So if you guys like to watch the
- 0:52podcast now you will have two options, Spotify and YouTube.
- 0:56All right, let's just get straight into the store for
- 0:58today. So the first story that I have
- 1:00for you guys is that Tarte Cosmetics is facing backlash
- 1:04once again for gifting influencers, this time Hermes
- 1:08bracelets in a latest PR campaign.
- 1:12So Tarte Cosmetics is going viral again for APR campaign
- 1:15that swept TikTok last week. Tarte is still doing lavish
- 1:19gifting and trips for influencers.
- 1:22And last week they really stepped it up when they sent
- 1:24Hermes bracelets to select influencers in their PR packages
- 1:28among their new products. So this obviously rubbed some
- 1:32people the wrong way. And to be honest, I feel like
- 1:35any PR related things like gifting or trips or anything
- 1:38around tart now just rubs people the wrong way because of the
- 1:42Tarte Dubai trip and all of the controversy around that.
- 1:45I just think for some reason, even though lots of brands do
- 1:48brands trips, I mean, I understand tart strips are
- 1:51really lavish and over the top, but a lot of brands do brand
- 1:54trips. A lot of brands take influencers
- 1:56away. And I just think the reputation
- 1:59that chart developed on TikTok specifically because of Tarte
- 2:03Dubai, because of that like cultural moment that happened
- 2:06with Tarte Dubai. And just like the discourse
- 2:08around it, even though it was not anything different from what
- 2:12we've seen from Tarte in the past.
- 2:14It just it became this cultural moment and now that reputation
- 2:17is like seared in the collective hive mind of TikTok.
- 2:22So anything PR related that Tarte does with influencers,
- 2:26people just go absolutely insane.
- 2:29So chart they sent, like I said, these are mez bracelets.
- 2:33And of course people are like OK, it's a cost of living
- 2:36crisis. Like this is so tone deaf.
- 2:38However, then the controversy was taken up A notch when it was
- 2:43revealed that yes, a lot of influencers got these Hermes
- 2:46bracelets along with the new product, but some influencers
- 2:50got gold plated necklaces with their names on it.
- 2:54So not Hermes bracelets. Like nothing close to an Hermes
- 2:57bracelet. And then one influencer actually
- 3:00said that herself and some others got bags of candy with
- 3:04their PR instead. So everyone was like what the
- 3:07hell is going on? And now there's these, like,
- 3:10conspiracy theories around it. So the three main theories going
- 3:14around on TikTok about like why Tart would have done this, why
- 3:17they would have gifted some influencers something as lavish
- 3:20and expensive and shocking almost as like an Hermes
- 3:24bracelet. And then others like a bag of
- 3:25candy with their new product is number one.
- 3:28They gifted influencers who make them the most money, the Hermes
- 3:32bracelets. So whether that's influencers
- 3:34over the course of the year who have had like a campaign with
- 3:36them, like sponsored content where, you know, their links
- 3:39like popped off and they sold lots of product or influencers
- 3:42who consistently have affiliate links for Tart and they're
- 3:44making them the most money. And then, you know, the
- 3:47influencers who are making them less money got the bracelets and
- 3:50then the influencers who are making them the least money, but
- 3:52they still want to have a good relationship with them.
- 3:54They sent them the PR and they had candy in the PR box.
- 3:58The other theory is that it could be that the influencers
- 4:01that speak about Tart the most like organically, like use them
- 4:05in their get ready with me videos and stuff like use their
- 4:07products without being paid or without it being PR.
- 4:10You know, they gifted them Hermes bracelets and it kind of
- 4:13went down the wrong like that based on like how frequently
- 4:16these influencers are mentioning them and stuff like I am sure a
- 4:19brand like Tart where influencer marketing is like all that they
- 4:21do, I'm sure sure that they are keeping track of metrics like
- 4:26that. And then the third theory, which
- 4:28I think is the most unlikely is that Tarte did this.
- 4:31They chose intentionally to gift some influencers a lavish gift
- 4:35and others not so much because they knew that when these
- 4:39influencers unbox things on Tiktok, that it would be like
- 4:42this kind of controversy and this kind of shocking moment
- 4:45where was like, Oh my God, you know, Hallie got an Hermes
- 4:48bracelet and Ken got a necklace. Like, what's going on here?
- 4:52And I mean, if that is the strategy, it works.
- 4:55That is literally what everybody's doing.
- 4:57But I'm going to say that's probably not the strategy.
- 4:59I think they wouldn't intentionally be creating a
- 5:02strategy that would isolate or kind of harm their relationship
- 5:06with other influencers. I think it really was just based
- 5:09on metrics and sales is my opinion.
- 5:13OK, the next story that I have for you guys is that Amaya
- 5:16Collin has been accused of home wrecking her best friend and
- 5:21fellow influencer Sandra Shehab's relationship.
- 5:24OK, so Amaya and Sandra were besties and they started posting
- 5:29together around 2019. They're both beauty and
- 5:31lifestyle influencers. And Sandra actually competed on
- 5:34America's Next Top Model and her family has a lot of influence, a
- 5:38lot of ties to Hollywood. So because of that, Sandra had a
- 5:41bigger following and more influence at the time.
- 5:44So she really took Amaya under her wing and helped kind of
- 5:47build her career. So in 2019, Sandra started
- 5:50dating a man named Josh. And in 2020, Sandra and Josh got
- 5:55engaged. And that same year Amaya started
- 5:59dating Sandra's brother Adam. So this is now like an Amesh
- 6:05foursome basically. So now this week, Sandra has
- 6:09taken to TikTok to shed some light on what happened between
- 6:12the four of them as the couples have all split.
- 6:15So somebody wrote in her comments.
- 6:18They wrote, didn't Amaya Kalan sleep with your fiance and
- 6:21brother? And then she just like happened
- 6:25to respond and basically confirm this.
- 6:28She said Yep and her and my ex fiance are still together but
- 6:34they're scared to put it out there.
- 6:36He was actually my husband. To make matters worse.
- 6:39I should have put it out there and exposed her but I'm better
- 6:42than that. So now people are taking this to
- 6:44mean that first of all, Sandra and Josh got married secretly
- 6:48sometime after 2020. Obviously it seems like they
- 6:52split in 2021. I think that's when they
- 6:54publicly like made it clear that they were over.
- 6:57And so they obviously got married before 2021.
- 7:00So maybe like at the end of 2020, beginning of 2021,
- 7:02something like that, they got officially married.
- 7:05So they were officially married. And then her best friend Amaya,
- 7:08allegedly, according to her this TikTok comment, slept with her
- 7:12husband and they're still together.
- 7:14So this is a bit niche, but people are losing their minds.
- 7:18It's just that kind of like niche creator tea that just pops
- 7:23off on TikTok and then it's going to die in like 3 seconds,
- 7:26you know? So now of course, Amaya's TikTok
- 7:29comment section is filled with people asking her to address
- 7:32this. She has not addressed it yet.
- 7:35I don't think she will after this, but I'll keep you guys
- 7:38posted if she does. OK?
- 7:40The last story that I have for you guys is that the Euphoria
- 7:43founder has taken to TikTok to finally address shade 600.
- 7:48Fiona Kochan, the founder of the beauty brand Euphoria, has
- 7:51addressed the backlash her company received back in April
- 7:55when it released a foundation shade called Shade 600 that was
- 7:59revealed to be almost entirely blackface paint.
- 8:03So this shade was released after the brand faced criticism for
- 8:06its limited foundation shade range to begin with.
- 8:09And Fiona also made this insensitive video, which I feel
- 8:12like it's not getting enough attention around this story.
- 8:15The shade so obviously just had like no undertones and they
- 8:20actually didn't have a model. So they had a Swatch in the
- 8:23place of where a models photo would be, whereas all the other
- 8:27shades had a model associated with it.
- 8:29And people were kind of like, what the fuck?
- 8:31And then Fiona made this video like on the search, like on the
- 8:34hunt basically for somebody who would suit shades 600.
- 8:38And she made this TikTok video where she was like running
- 8:41around a mall and like swatching it and trying to like find
- 8:45random people that it might suit.
- 8:47And she ended up finding a guy And then they did this like
- 8:49photo shoot and he ended up being the face of shade 600.
- 8:53I don't know if it has ever been addressed, if that.
- 8:58I mean, I'm assuming that was part of the campaign.
- 9:00Like I don't think that that video was like in response to
- 9:03people being like, where is the model?
- 9:05Like, I think that they released the shade range and they
- 9:07released that imagery knowing that that would cause people to
- 9:12be like, where is the model? And then they could release this
- 9:14video off the back of it. I do think it was part of the
- 9:16strategy, but it's still very unclear, at least to me.
- 9:19But yes. So anyways, now Fiona has taken
- 9:21to TikTok several months later on Friday, to finally address
- 9:24everything. But a few months ago, we had an
- 9:27issue with one of our foundation shades, and what happened was I
- 9:31wanted to rush the process to create this straight extension
- 9:34so that it would align with another lawn.
- 9:36Because of that, there's just a series of missteps both on our
- 9:39process as well as how fast I was making our labs work where
- 9:43it just kind of snowballed into just this huge mistake.
- 9:47I just want to be clear, there was never any ill intent when we
- 9:50were creating any of the shades, but a few things did slip
- 9:54through the cracks. And for that I am genuinely,
- 9:56genuinely sorry. But this product really offended
- 10:00you guys. It really hurt you guys.
- 10:01And for that I will always be very sorry for doing that.
- 10:03In the past few months, I know you guys are probably wondering
- 10:06where have I been when all of this was happening?
- 10:08It was right as I was giving birth to my son and I knew that
- 10:11this was a very serious topic that required a lot of thought,
- 10:14a lot of learning, a lot of intention.
- 10:17And I just, I knew that immediately going out and
- 10:20talking to you as right as I was giving birth in that moment, it
- 10:24wouldn't have done this topic justice.
- 10:27Again, I am so sorry that my actions really offended you
- 10:30guys. Take full accountability for the
- 10:32issue. We've really used this time to
- 10:34really reflect as a company, to learn and to grow and ensure in
- 10:37the future like this never happened again.
- 10:40So this video did not go over well.
- 10:42I'll read some of the top comments, like the most liked
- 10:45comments. One comment says I think the big
- 10:47issue is you have not once said I am not proud of the product I
- 10:50released and I'm disappointed in the impact it had on this
- 10:53community. Also as someone who is a makeup
- 10:56brand, it doesn't seem like you enjoy makeup like at all.
- 10:58It's interesting how the word community has been said multiple
- 11:01times throughout the video but nothing about Euphoria is based
- 11:04in community. Saying quote this product really
- 11:06offended you guys is crazy too because as a makeup brand you
- 11:10should be offended by the product you put out.
- 11:12Someone else said way too little and too late, especially after
- 11:15the blatant gaslighting regarding the issue.
- 11:17I hope all the people that were defending this feel foolish.
- 11:20And someone else said ma'am we're dealing with YSL right now
- 11:23we don't have time for this. I actually don't think I spoke
- 11:27about that on a mini scroll, but YSL released this lavender blush
- 11:31that is so light. And the point of these blushes
- 11:36was they were claiming they were marketing them as you know, that
- 11:40they would suit like every skin tone.
- 11:43And even people with very light skin we're putting them on and
- 11:46they're like, this is too light even for me.
- 11:49So the fact that they're trying to say that this would suit any
- 11:52skin tone, including darker skin tones is like delusional.
- 11:56And anyways, it it caused a lot of uproar.
- 11:59I don't, I actually don't know why I didn't speak about it but
- 12:01I don't think I did on mini so I guess that's what this comment
- 12:04is referring to. But yes the comments are mostly
- 12:07just people being like this took way too long to address.
- 12:12It's been so many months, I guess I am surprised that they
- 12:16decided to address it this far on you know, I feel like
- 12:20sometimes the move for these big brands as if they don't address
- 12:23it right away, they just never address it.
- 12:25And sorry, I shouldn't say big brands because euth 4A is not a
- 12:28big brand in the scheme of beauty brands.
- 12:30But you know, it's a pretty well known brand.
- 12:33And yeah, I am actually surprised that they would bring
- 12:36this up again because I do think sometimes the mentality around
- 12:41PR, especially if you have APR professional that's helping you
- 12:44is just like don't say anything cuz then it will die.
- 12:47So if you bring something back up again, then that's starting
- 12:50the conversation all over again, which obviously it has, at least
- 12:53on this podcast. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 12:58today. Thank you so much for listening
- 13:00to Mini Scroll. Please remember to rate, review
- 13:02and subscribe, especially if you guys got this video on Spotify
- 13:06and you liked it. I really hope you guys will
- 13:08leave us a review. I'm trying to get to 500 reviews
- 13:11on Spotify. So please just hit that little
- 13:14star. It would mean so much.
- 13:16All right, guys, I love you and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 13:18Bye.
