- 2:03Speaker 2: Taylor Text three zero four nine three five five zero
- 2:05Speaker 2: zero eight want to tell you about a musical event
- 2:08Speaker 2: happening at West Virginia State University January the thirtieth at
- 2:11Speaker 2: the Wilson Student Unions. Let's start about six here to
- 2:14Speaker 2: talk about it. We've got to Madeline. Is that when
- 2:17Speaker 2: I pronounced that right, Madeline say, Okay, you're on radio,
- 2:19Speaker 2: so you have to say something okay, yes, Okay, you
- 2:22Speaker 2: got Madeline. And we also have Kylie Yes, and we.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Have Tabby Tabby.
- 2:29Speaker 2: All right, So first of all, let everybody to get
- 2:32Speaker 2: to know you, introduce yourselves, tell us what you're studying
- 2:35Speaker 2: at West Virginia State. How'd you get into this ill thing?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Anybody can start, go ahead. I think I think they're
- 2:39Speaker 2: electing you.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So go ahead.
- 2:42Speaker 5: I'm Madeline Bailey. I am a double major. I do music,
- 2:46Speaker 5: performance and communications with an emphasis.
- 2:48Speaker 3: In pr Okay.
- 2:50Speaker 5: So I started playing the flue when I was ten
- 2:53Speaker 5: and I've kept with it ever since. And I chose
- 2:57Speaker 5: communications and public relations because I enjoyed aspect of it.
- 3:00Speaker 5: When I was in high school, and I just thought
- 3:04Speaker 5: that planning this gala for the orchestra would kind of
- 3:07Speaker 5: combine the two. So the three of us thought it
- 3:08Speaker 5: would be a good idea, and we kind of stuck
- 3:10Speaker 5: with it ever since.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And that's one of the reasons why you're here, because
- 3:12Speaker 2: you folks reached out to me because you want to
- 3:14Speaker 2: get into the whole pr thing, and and and by
- 3:17Speaker 2: the way, and by the way, just I didn't plan this.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm actually drinking out of my West Virginia State coffee
- 3:20Speaker 2: mug today. Oh courtesy was my good friend Eric Cage,
- 3:23Speaker 2: the president out there when he was on the show.
- 3:25Speaker 2: One day, I was drinking out of a Marshall coffee mug.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And because I'm a well I went to hold on Now,
- 3:29Speaker 2: I went to Marshall, okay, and so I was drinking
- 3:31Speaker 2: and he said, he said, uh, you know you need
- 3:34Speaker 2: you need a West Virginia State coffee mug. And the
- 3:35Speaker 2: next time he came in, lo and behole. He comes in,
- 3:38Speaker 2: he hands me a West Virginia.
- 3:38Speaker 3: State Coffee boy fund to suck.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so he brought gifts. You guys didn't bring anything, right,
- 3:44Speaker 2: I brought my presence Okay, your's presence not with a
- 3:48Speaker 2: t right, all right, you're cut off.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You're not going back on again.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Okay, but but but the reason I wanted to bring
- 3:54Speaker 2: up the pr aspect of it, because of part of
- 3:56Speaker 2: what you're doing is is you need to get the
- 3:58Speaker 2: word out, so you contact you folks kind attacked me
- 4:00Speaker 2: and so we'd like to come on and talk about
- 4:01Speaker 2: this big event. So talk about your and I'll get
- 4:04Speaker 2: to the other two. I was just kidding, and talk
- 4:06Speaker 2: about your your musical experience when you start playing the flute.
- 4:09Speaker 3: What age I.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Started playing the flute to ten? I was blessed because
- 4:13Speaker 5: my parents let me have private lessons growing up. And
- 4:16Speaker 5: I always just thought the flu was a very cool instrum.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I'll say, what was it about the flute.
- 4:20Speaker 5: I don't know, it just I always loved it. I
- 4:22Speaker 5: always heard it in movies and things. And you always
- 4:24Speaker 5: saw people playing the flute the wrong way.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Usually in movies. It's so play it the right way.
- 4:29Speaker 2: They always do in movies, whether it's no matter what
- 4:31Speaker 2: the instrument is, guitar or whatever. My dad was a
- 4:34Speaker 2: pretty good guitarist, and it would kill him watching movies
- 4:37Speaker 2: when people were playing guitar, and they never moved their hands,
- 4:39Speaker 2: you know, they just especially on the neck of the guitar, like.
- 4:41Speaker 3: No, stop that stop that. So all right, and I
- 4:44Speaker 3: introduce yourself.
- 4:45Speaker 6: Well, my name's Kylie Hannah and I am a little
- 4:49Speaker 6: bit oven underachiever. So I'm just a communication But I
- 4:55Speaker 6: have been involved with music my entire life. I've been
- 4:59Speaker 6: singing for as long as I can remember. I play
- 5:01Speaker 6: a little guitar, not anything to shake a stick at.
- 5:05Speaker 6: But I am a part of our school's jazz band,
- 5:10Speaker 6: and our jazz band's going to be performing at our gala.
- 5:14Speaker 6: And it's just a really, really amazing.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Band.
- 5:19Speaker 6: I mean Scott Woodard puts it together and he absolutely
- 5:22Speaker 6: rocks it. I mean we have people who are students,
- 5:25Speaker 6: we have community members, we have professionals all in this band,
- 5:30Speaker 6: just like the orchestra, and it's just really an amazing
- 5:34Speaker 6: opportunity for people to grow, to learn, to have fun,
- 5:38Speaker 6: let loose a little bit, and it's just a really
- 5:42Speaker 6: cool environment and I've enjoyed getting to be a part
- 5:45Speaker 6: of it. So I just decided in my free time
- 5:49Speaker 6: I was going to be a part of something musical
- 5:51Speaker 6: on campus and that was that. And I've been best
- 5:54Speaker 6: friends with Maddie since high school.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So where would you guys go to high school?
- 5:58Speaker 6: We're both homeschooled.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Actually okay, yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but you went let's say so you went to
- 6:04Speaker 2: the same room in the same house.
- 6:07Speaker 6: No, no, we did this. We did the same curriculum.
- 6:09Speaker 6: That such a yeah, okay, but yeah, I love pr
- 6:14Speaker 6: and so I've really really enjoyed getting to put the
- 6:18Speaker 6: gala on and do a lot of the social media
- 6:21Speaker 6: we have. We're posting currently on two social media sites,
- 6:25Speaker 6: Facebook and Instagram, and we just are really enjoying getting
- 6:30Speaker 6: to put all of it together. We've been filming interviews
- 6:33Speaker 6: with all of the orchestra members and it's just been awesome.
- 6:36Speaker 2: All right, and you said you were a singer. What's
- 6:38Speaker 2: your favorite genre? What do you sing?
- 6:40Speaker 6: I mean, I'm a little biased, but jazz.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Okay, that's all right.
- 6:45Speaker 6: I definitely love anything Ella Fitzgerald, anything that can cold.
- 6:51Speaker 2: The classics, yes, classic. I just I just got into
- 6:54Speaker 2: jazz a couple of years ago. I'm a person that
- 6:56Speaker 2: loves music of all kinds, and I just got into
- 6:58Speaker 2: jazz a couple of years ago. And my favorite is
- 7:02Speaker 2: not any of those. John Coltrane. I'm a huge Coltrane fan.
- 7:05Speaker 6: Love.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I love Coltrane, all.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Right, and you are I'm Tabby, all right, Tabby, and
- 7:10Speaker 2: tell us about you.
- 7:11Speaker 7: I'm a music performance major and a communications miner.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:16Speaker 7: I play the trumpet. I started playing the trumpet when
- 7:18Speaker 7: I was in fourth grade. And I've always loved music.
- 7:22Speaker 7: So getting to put on an event like this and
- 7:24Speaker 7: be in college for music it it's really it's been
- 7:28Speaker 7: really fun, and it's been a really good experience, and
- 7:31Speaker 7: I'm excited for this gala. It's gonna be fun, all right.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And I will say something about this about the communications
- 7:37Speaker 2: program and all of the curriculum. You know that state
- 7:41Speaker 2: is amazing, but the communications program is really good. And
- 7:43Speaker 2: we've had a lot of folks that have come through
- 7:46Speaker 2: here that were part of that program. Hollywood. Jeff Patty,
- 7:48Speaker 2: who produced this show for many years. You know, you
- 7:51Speaker 2: guys know Jeff. Yeah, well, Jeff, of course, he works
- 7:53Speaker 2: on our sister station is ninety eight seven The Mountain
- 7:56Speaker 2: and also KWS on the on the weekends. And Jeff
- 7:59Speaker 2: and I have done each other for a number of years.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I hope he's not listening right because I'm gonna give
- 8:03Speaker 2: him a compliment. Jeff's class act.
- 8:05Speaker 3: He's a good dude.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I I I'm lucky to have him as a friend
- 8:09Speaker 2: and as a coworker too. But don't ever tell him
- 8:11Speaker 2: I said that. All right, doing, all right, let's talk
- 8:14Speaker 2: about the event. Let's talk about the event. It's January
- 8:17Speaker 2: the what thirtieth? January thirtieth, all right? And what are
- 8:20Speaker 2: people if they come out for? What are they going
- 8:22Speaker 2: to hear? What are they going to experience that night?
- 8:25Speaker 5: So we are having a bunch of things. We're having
- 8:28Speaker 5: live music by the jazz band. You'll hear her saying
- 8:30Speaker 5: she's very modest, but she has a gorgeous voice, and
- 8:33Speaker 5: she's not trained, she's she's got a gorgeous voice. So
- 8:36Speaker 5: you'll hear her saying, we have a bunch of people singing.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Our jazz band is incredible. We're going to have some
- 8:41Speaker 5: orchestra groups performed. This is the celebration of the ten
- 8:44Speaker 5: years of the orchestra, so we're wanting to honor all
- 8:47Speaker 5: the hard work that people have put in. We're going
- 8:49Speaker 5: to have food for everybody and a silent auction, and
- 8:52Speaker 5: we're going to have live dancing and live music and
- 8:54Speaker 5: we'll have some recorded music too, and for we'll have
- 8:58Speaker 5: a silent auction for people with a bunch of things
- 9:00Speaker 5: we can't let people know.
- 9:02Speaker 3: That's part of the part of the fun.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll have a little surprise for some people when
- 9:05Speaker 5: they get there. And we just want to have a
- 9:07Speaker 5: good time of people.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And it says it's a masquerade ball, tell you we're
- 9:10Speaker 2: doing the whole.
- 9:11Speaker 6: Yeah, so you can't come in unless you have a mask.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, and we're just one get.
- 9:17Speaker 3: A mask like that?
- 9:18Speaker 6: Well Amazon, you can get a mask on Amazon co Bucks.
- 9:21Speaker 6: I don't care what kind of mask you show up and.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Just hardcore about it.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:25Speaker 6: Well, we're going to have a photo booth like a
- 9:28Speaker 6: genuine red carpet so that people can take photos. It's
- 9:32Speaker 6: not going to be in vain, so you know, show
- 9:34Speaker 6: up looking absolutely stellar because your photo is going to
- 9:38Speaker 6: be taken.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Whether you like, whether you want it or not. Right,
- 9:40Speaker 3: So that's what you're saying.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Where can people get tickets online?
- 9:44Speaker 6: So we have we have links that are being posted
- 9:47Speaker 6: on all of those social media's. We have invites being
- 9:50Speaker 6: sent out on Facebook. You can register online RSVP.
- 9:55Speaker 5: So yeah, we have an event on Facebook. It's combined
- 9:59Speaker 5: with the WSU Music on Facebook and the West Vinia
- 10:02Speaker 5: State Orchestra on Facebook, and then the link is online
- 10:07Speaker 5: through the West Vinia State Foundation.
- 10:09Speaker 7: Okay, all right, it's listed as the name of the event.

- 10:43Speaker 2: eighty eight or Rich clin sixty six. That's Climb with
- 10:46Speaker 2: a K at gmail dot com. You know, part of
- 10:48Speaker 2: the show that we do, ladies, is we get text
- 10:50Speaker 2: to the show and someone read a text that you
- 10:52Speaker 2: that somebody text it okay, it says kids really should
- 10:55Speaker 2: get into music and marching band. Those were the best
- 10:57Speaker 2: times I had in junior high and high school football games,
- 11:00Speaker 2: conference parades, field show competitions. They would be surprised at
- 11:03Speaker 2: how many other favorite celebs were band geeks, including our
- 11:06Speaker 2: own Jennifer Garner, who played saxophone and the GW Patriots
- 11:10Speaker 2: marching band and she still plays.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Absolutely I totally agree. I think that marching band is
- 11:16Speaker 6: a really really cool thing. Ours is kind of small,
- 11:20Speaker 6: but we lead it with pride and we really really
- 11:24Speaker 6: show up for our football games. We have a pet
- 11:28Speaker 6: band going on for basketball games. I think that's getting started.
- 11:31Speaker 6: So we have a relatively small school and with that
- 11:34Speaker 6: comes sometimes not a whole lot of interest in certain
- 11:39Speaker 6: aspects because people just don't know that it's going on.
- 11:42Speaker 6: And so I think that's why as communication majors, we
- 11:46Speaker 6: tend to feel a little like, oh, but there's so
- 11:50Speaker 6: many things going on, how do people not know about this?
- 11:52Speaker 6: And so we try to create that movement in the
- 11:56Speaker 6: student body so that people know that these things are
- 11:59Speaker 6: going on, because a lot of people they just don't
- 12:01Speaker 6: understand that we've got a jazz band. We have a
- 12:04Speaker 6: pet band, we have a marching band, we have an orchestra,
- 12:07Speaker 6: we have we had a show band there for a
- 12:10Speaker 6: little bit, and I was a part of that as well.
- 12:12Speaker 6: And the only difference between jazz band and show band
- 12:17Speaker 6: was that show band had a real, real tall black
- 12:21Speaker 6: dude in front of it. And his name is Phil Washington,
- 12:25Speaker 6: and he oh swag for days.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Everybody knows Phil, yes, and Phil Washington is he's a gay.
- 12:32Speaker 2: But you see him on TV doing the lottery numbers
- 12:34Speaker 2: all the time, and he's very, very accomplished.
- 12:36Speaker 3: What do you guys hope to do? I'm gonna ask.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Him a personal question of all three. What do you
- 12:39Speaker 2: hope to do after graduation? We'll start with you, what
- 12:41Speaker 2: do you what do you do? You know which will
- 12:42Speaker 2: do after graduation?
- 12:43Speaker 7: I'd like to go into music marketing.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Okay, all right, all right, what about you?
- 12:48Speaker 6: Honestly I want to dabble in just about anything I
- 12:52Speaker 6: can get my hands in that's communications related. So I
- 12:55Speaker 6: really love broadcasting.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I'm taking notes here, by the way, just so you know,
- 13:00Speaker 2: because we're always looking for people. I'm all right, all right,
- 13:04Speaker 2: Jeff Jenkins, if you're listening, upstairs in the news department,
- 13:06Speaker 2: come down and talk to this young lady, or talk
- 13:08Speaker 2: to all three of them, but go ahead.
- 13:09Speaker 6: And I'm sorry, yeah, no, you're fine. I but broadcasting radio.
- 13:14Speaker 6: I genuinely, really, really love anything PR related, so I
- 13:18Speaker 6: think it would be so fun to uh a project,
- 13:21Speaker 6: manage and to put my hands into something that I
- 13:24Speaker 6: can really feel good about and you know, bigger causes
- 13:28Speaker 6: and something like that.
- 13:29Speaker 3: So what about you.
- 13:31Speaker 5: I am on the same lads these too. I've looked
- 13:34Speaker 5: into music marketing as well. But I love doing all
- 13:37Speaker 5: of the aspects of communications. I work for sports information
- 13:40Speaker 5: right now and I'm learning broadcasting and how to do
- 13:45Speaker 5: the audio and journalistic aspects of it.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Stephanie Poly is our producer and she can help with that.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Too, just so you know, yeah, I enjoy all of it.
- 13:54Speaker 2: But she went to Marshall, is that okay? I guess
- 13:58Speaker 2: all right, are gonna do? I'll let it slide all right.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Again, I thought I.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Turned your microphone off, all right, so appreciate all three
- 14:06Speaker 2: of you been there. Give us the dates of the
- 14:07Speaker 2: concert again. We'll have you on before then.
- 14:09Speaker 3: But give it.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Give us the dates of the big event again.

- 15:18Speaker 8: the dirty work to benefit corporate mega stores. Durbin's bill
- 15:22Speaker 8: could cut corners on your credit card security, putting your
- 15:25Speaker 8: personal data at risk. Big chain retailers and warehouse stores
- 15:29Speaker 8: want to inflate their profits, and Liberal Dick Durbin would
- 15:32Speaker 8: help them do it. Tell Senators say no to the
- 15:35Speaker 8: megastores and Dick Durbin paid for by the Electronic Payments Coalition.

- 17:18Speaker 2: Tony the Taylor.
- 17:20Speaker 11: How you doing, man, Good morning, happy thanksgiving them.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Dave backed that microphone down a little bit because I
- 17:25Speaker 2: you know, it's a couple of those communications.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Major.
- 17:27Speaker 2: We're a little soft speaking. We'll work on that, but not.
- 17:29Speaker 11: You, not me, not so spoken.
- 17:32Speaker 2: He heard you, you know, coming up out of South
- 17:34Speaker 2: Hills a minute ago. All right, so small Business Saturday,
- 17:38Speaker 2: and listeners know my opinions on this. We should always
- 17:40Speaker 2: shop small and locally when possible. Uh. But we'll get
- 17:45Speaker 2: in that a little bit later on. Tony, you have
- 17:47Speaker 2: been a big part of Small Business Saturday for some time.
- 17:50Speaker 2: You were telling me a story on the phone yesterday.
- 17:52Speaker 11: Twenty ten, we were the only store in West Virginia
- 17:55Speaker 11: to participate in Small Business Saturday. And it's an augur
- 17:58Speaker 11: ye of twenty ten, and then it's slowly picked up
- 18:01Speaker 11: and then it's become a big thing. Like Black Friday.
- 18:04Speaker 11: We don't participate in Black Friday. We give our employees
- 18:07Speaker 11: that day off. Givema today rest because from Black from
- 18:11Speaker 11: Small vis A Saturday until Christmas Eve.
- 18:14Speaker 3: It's full throttle to.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Let the roll aids kick in on the on the
- 18:16Speaker 2: day after. Well, and let's be honest, I mean, Black
- 18:18Speaker 2: Friday is not the big deal that it used to
- 18:21Speaker 2: be like twenty years ago.
- 18:23Speaker 11: Right, There's no when I was Cabby's Patch kids and
- 18:28Speaker 11: what you know, there's different crazy toys that I bought
- 18:30Speaker 11: when my kids were young. Yeah, but yeah, so there's
- 18:33Speaker 11: nothing really like that, and there's no more. I mean,
- 18:35Speaker 11: one hundred dollars television is like a normal price.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Now, yeah, yeah, but but I mean I just remember,
- 18:41Speaker 2: you know, what it used to be like, and I
- 18:43Speaker 2: was always working, so I you know, doing it one
- 18:45Speaker 2: doring in the morning show. My Black Friday was me
- 18:48Speaker 2: being on the air at you know, five point thirty
- 18:49Speaker 2: in the morning. But I can remember, you know, the
- 18:51Speaker 2: news reports how it used to be wild, and it's
- 18:53Speaker 2: not that way anymore. But small Bustus Saturday has just
- 18:56Speaker 2: continued to get bigger and big. I had the mayor
- 18:58Speaker 2: of Hurricane on the show on Monday, and then Hurricane
- 19:02Speaker 2: is a very very small town.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Okay, they go all out for it.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I mean, you can't walk down the streets of Hurricane
- 19:07Speaker 2: for their you know, eight nine businesses that they have,
- 19:10Speaker 2: and of course the Valley parks got stuff going on
- 19:12Speaker 2: and throughout Tays Valley, I know South Charleston saying everybody's
- 19:15Speaker 2: got stuff's a big deal.
- 19:16Speaker 11: And it's the second largest volume day in the Christmas season.
- 19:20Speaker 11: The biggest is always and always has been the Saturday
- 19:24Speaker 11: before Christmas, no matter where it falls with Christmas. Sometimes
- 19:27Speaker 11: it's Christmas Eve that still be the biggest retail day.
- 19:31Speaker 11: And the Christmas season again, it'st a short window.
- 19:33Speaker 3: This year.
- 19:34Speaker 11: We only have four saturdays to get it done this year,
- 19:39Speaker 11: two years back to back, so retail sales will reflect
- 19:42Speaker 11: that when they report them. Then sometimes we get five weeks.
- 19:46Speaker 11: Generally it depends just when Thanksgiving falls.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And here's here's one of the knocks that I hear
- 19:52Speaker 2: about Charleston. There's nowhere to shop, there's nowhere.
- 19:56Speaker 11: To Those are the people who never come to Charleston.
- 19:59Speaker 11: They I mean, they obviously don't. On my street. I'm
- 20:01Speaker 11: on a corner of Hale in Virginia. If you walk
- 20:04Speaker 11: two blocks north, there's every storefront is filled and full
- 20:09Speaker 11: of great little shops and restaurants. Capitol Street is not
- 20:12Speaker 11: a big retail center, but there's some great eateries there.
- 20:14Speaker 11: There's a couple of retail stores there. There are still
- 20:18Speaker 11: a couple of stores left in the mall here. But
- 20:20Speaker 11: then also you go just right up the hill there
- 20:23Speaker 11: and you have Bridge Road Shopping. Are great specialty stores
- 20:26Speaker 11: up there, fantastic. It's the way of retailing nowadays is
- 20:30Speaker 11: there's a mixture of online, small shopping areas and then
- 20:34Speaker 11: larger retail areas like South Ridge which is huge. Everybody
- 20:38Speaker 11: talks you know the hold the mall in Huntington, Well,
- 20:40Speaker 11: Huntington Mall wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the five
- 20:43Speaker 11: times as many stores that are on out parcels and
- 20:45Speaker 11: are surrounding it. It's just the way it is. People
- 20:48Speaker 11: just don't shop at enclosed malls anymore, just as fact.
- 20:51Speaker 2: And the interesting thing about that to me and Ian
- 20:54Speaker 2: we're talking to Tony the Taylor Paranzino about small business Saturday.
- 20:57Speaker 2: The interesting thing about that is is that you know,
- 20:59Speaker 2: you and I are roughly okay, no, you're a lot
- 21:01Speaker 2: older than me, but we remember the heydays of the
- 21:06Speaker 2: malls and it didn't have to be the town, so
- 21:07Speaker 2: it could be any mall across America and going to
- 21:09Speaker 2: the mall Fast Times at Ridgemont High. You know which
- 21:11Speaker 2: the movie that changed my life by the way, uh
- 21:14Speaker 2: I was actually yeah, well bb Kate's pool scene. That's
- 21:18Speaker 2: all I got to say about that single handedly propelled
- 21:20Speaker 2: me into puberty. But I but I will say that
- 21:24Speaker 2: the days of going People still go to malls, Okay,
- 21:26Speaker 2: they still do. However, the bigger we've gotten, the smaller
- 21:32Speaker 2: we've gotten, because there's people that still love to go
- 21:35Speaker 2: to these small shops, just like the ones you mentioned
- 21:37Speaker 2: in Charleston. And you do incredible business down there, but
- 21:40Speaker 2: you're still considered small business obviously, but you but you're
- 21:43Speaker 2: one though, and there are several others that have kind
- 21:46Speaker 2: of bridged that gap between Okay, you can still come
- 21:49Speaker 2: in and just look around, but you also do things online.
- 21:53Speaker 2: You also do things. You can do trunk shows and
- 21:56Speaker 2: things of that nature. So I think the successful business
- 21:58Speaker 2: in twenties twenty five tony about to be twenty twenty
- 22:01Speaker 2: six has got to kind of be a marriage of
- 22:03Speaker 2: all of them.
- 22:03Speaker 11: You have to be omni channel. If you're in retail,
- 22:05Speaker 11: no matter what size, I'm small to large. If you
- 22:07Speaker 11: have no internet presence, you're not in business. We have
- 22:11Speaker 11: a very robust online store and ship all over the
- 22:14Speaker 11: country eight or nine packages a day. We're one of
- 22:19Speaker 11: the larger, probably single store online retailers in the country
- 22:23Speaker 11: for men's clothing. I sold three Oxford suits online ship
- 22:27Speaker 11: to Massachusetts, one went to Pennsylvania.
- 22:29Speaker 3: And each are people that people. You need to realize.
- 22:31Speaker 2: These are people that in many cases don't have any
- 22:33Speaker 2: ties to this area. They're not from Charleston and said, well,
- 22:36Speaker 2: I still want to shop with Tony or whatever. The
- 22:38Speaker 2: people that just did the the Google machine search engine
- 22:41Speaker 2: and found.
- 22:41Speaker 3: You, you know.
- 22:42Speaker 11: And what's amusing to me sometimes is I recognize some
- 22:44Speaker 11: of the names I'm sending to. There'll be celebrities, there'll
- 22:48Speaker 11: be business type you I mean, other than me, other
- 22:50Speaker 11: than well, yeah, well you walk.
- 22:52Speaker 3: In the store.
- 22:53Speaker 11: Okay, that's truely, that's true with your on tarage.
- 22:56Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah.
- 22:56Speaker 11: But so it's just fascinating to me. But that's that's
- 22:59Speaker 11: the way it is, and it's it's fun and it
- 23:01Speaker 11: keeps us going, I mean, it really does. But again,
- 23:04Speaker 11: it used to be more than our own, than our
- 23:07Speaker 11: in store business, and now our in store business has
- 23:10Speaker 11: surpass because Charleston. Again, people are coming here. We have
- 23:13Speaker 11: to collect your data, have people moving here all the time,
- 23:17Speaker 11: and these are the people you want moving here, professionals
- 23:19Speaker 11: and it's fantastic and people can say no. But the
- 23:23Speaker 11: housing situation reflects that there's a shortage of houses. There's
- 23:27Speaker 11: sorties of reason there's a shortage of house. Yeah, and
- 23:29Speaker 11: people are moving here. And it's not just Charleston. I
- 23:31Speaker 11: mean it goes on down through the valley. Well, the
- 23:33Speaker 11: whole thing is Charleston. Yeah, people, this border thing is
- 23:36Speaker 11: going across the board, you know. I mean Charleston has
- 23:38Speaker 11: forty eight thousand people, then you cross over the river
- 23:41Speaker 11: and you got another thirty thousand added to they're really
- 23:44Speaker 11: are trading area is about six hundred and fifty thousand people.
- 23:48Speaker 11: Is our trading right now, which is the Metro Valley
- 23:51Speaker 11: and Logan we go to Pikeville. That's that's pretty much
- 23:54Speaker 11: if you're in retail that you're trading right.
- 23:56Speaker 2: We talked to Tony the Taylor appearing Zino about small
- 23:59Speaker 2: business Saturday, but showing five at Live broad to You
- 24:01Speaker 2: part by Live Healthy West Virginia presented by WVU Madison,
- 24:04Speaker 2: a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles. Check avalate this episode's WV
- 24:08Speaker 2: Metronews dot com unto the podcast menu. So what small
- 24:11Speaker 2: business Saturday look like for Tony the Taylor.
- 24:13Speaker 11: We have great promotions again. Quarter zips are hot. That's
- 24:16Speaker 11: the hot item. That's the that's the cabbage patch kid
- 24:19Speaker 11: appearently of Christmas twenty twenty.
- 24:21Speaker 2: But you're not gonna get a kidney injured trying to
- 24:23Speaker 2: find one.
- 24:25Speaker 11: We're doing a buy one, get one free on all
- 24:27Speaker 11: sweaters that day in store only on that but we
- 24:30Speaker 11: have outer wear at half price. We have great selection
- 24:32Speaker 11: of shoes. Got a special selection of Johnson and Murphy's
- 24:35Speaker 11: that are seventy nine ninety nine for a dress roof
- 24:37Speaker 11: you need a nice banner black dress jew some other
- 24:41Speaker 11: great deals going on. You can check our website at
- 24:44Speaker 11: Bestmaster Taylor dot com for that, and then we're ready
- 24:49Speaker 11: to go. Don't forget to come downtown for Holly Jolly
- 24:51Speaker 11: Browny on Friday of art Walk. We are not open
- 24:54Speaker 11: for this, but so I can go out and actually
- 24:56Speaker 11: enjoy it. Some great events we the holiday shopping Village
- 25:01Speaker 11: going on Slack Plaza and you know, don't forget to
- 25:04Speaker 11: stop in my buddy at Sam's Uptown for a nice
- 25:07Speaker 11: great meal and a cocktail and walk around pod. It
- 25:10Speaker 11: will be in effect and it would be a great time.
- 25:12Speaker 2: And again, you know, I had you on to talk
- 25:15Speaker 2: about your business because you're, you know, kind of up
- 25:16Speaker 2: to sponsored this show. But I also wanted you to
- 25:19Speaker 2: hit on the other businesses, which you've done, because it's
- 25:21Speaker 2: not just it's not just the Tony the Taylor Show.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I mean everybody else is everybody. Everybody's taking part of it.
- 25:27Speaker 2: And again that vibrant downtown and I think people kind
- 25:30Speaker 2: of you know, and Holly Jolly Brawley has been such
- 25:32Speaker 2: a big part of that over the last you know,
- 25:34Speaker 2: the last holiday seas.
- 25:35Speaker 11: I have to tell you Kevin Madison and Morgan Morrison
- 25:37Speaker 11: they work their tails off year round for this event
- 25:42Speaker 11: and every year they make it better and better and better.
- 25:44Speaker 11: And I'm pumped for the Drone show. The last year
- 25:47Speaker 11: was good. This year it's going to be spectacular.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a text here for you that says, uh,
- 25:53Speaker 2: how do you know measurements are accurate if you're going
- 25:55Speaker 2: by what someone posts on an online order.
- 25:58Speaker 11: Well, most things we sell online are belts, shoes, sports wear,
- 26:04Speaker 11: very rarely we get things that we we don't do
- 26:07Speaker 11: anything custom made online except for belts. We have custom
- 26:09Speaker 11: belts online and we call them and that's the way
- 26:13Speaker 11: it is, or I will go visit them. Most we
- 26:16Speaker 11: don't really sell custom shirts online. That's in it's impossible
- 26:19Speaker 11: to do uh accurately.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Well. And the great thing I think about about your
- 26:24Speaker 2: store is is people can go in there and they
- 26:29Speaker 2: can shop and not you know, you guys are experts.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You and Ryan, you know you do a great job.
- 26:34Speaker 2: And you go in and you know, okay, I gotta
- 26:37Speaker 2: I got a formal event coming up.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Help me.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And I know I've hung out at your store enough
- 26:43Speaker 2: to know that that you get a lot of that
- 26:45Speaker 2: people coming in or put somebody bringing a kid in
- 26:47Speaker 2: for a Christmas formal or something like that.
- 26:49Speaker 3: And and and they don't know. What they don't know
- 26:51Speaker 3: is that they.
- 26:51Speaker 11: Don't even weddings. You know, we do three or four
- 26:54Speaker 11: weddings weekend, which which is a huge business. We're probably
- 26:59Speaker 11: the largest Tuxiter place. And the thing, we're cheaper than
- 27:02Speaker 11: everybody else, and we do it better than everybody else.
- 27:05Speaker 11: So it's it's uh, you know, it's just fun. And
- 27:08Speaker 11: we interview you first, we just want to give you something.
- 27:10Speaker 11: We want to make sure you look good and feel
- 27:12Speaker 11: good when you leave. And am sure event that's important.
- 27:16Speaker 11: Look good and feel good.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Now you're a Charleston guy, I mean born, born, in bred,
- 27:20Speaker 2: and like what I always said, you're born and bred.
- 27:22Speaker 2: When you die, you'll be Charleston dead. But uh, talk
- 27:26Speaker 2: about people always want to look back on any town
- 27:29Speaker 2: Tony and they all want to say, well, this I
- 27:31Speaker 2: remember how it how it used to be.
- 27:33Speaker 3: And that's okay.
- 27:34Speaker 2: People have a tendency to look back through rose colored
- 27:37Speaker 2: glasses sometimes, you know, and it's not always like It's
- 27:39Speaker 2: like with music, you know, on the music of the
- 27:41Speaker 2: eighties was the best of all.
- 27:43Speaker 3: It really was, really was.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I mean we but we look about it and you know,
- 27:46Speaker 2: but but but but talk about what it was like
- 27:49Speaker 2: and there's still a lot of positive things going on.
- 27:51Speaker 2: But talk about growing up in Charleston East End kid,
- 27:53Speaker 2: and what what what Charleston was was like. And my
- 27:56Speaker 2: point is not to say it was better then than
- 27:58Speaker 2: it is now. I'm just saying it's just different.
- 28:01Speaker 11: It's just different. It's just the way it is. I
- 28:02Speaker 11: mean again, and my dad started the store in nineteen
- 28:06Speaker 11: seventy four and I had to go to work. I
- 28:08Speaker 11: was nine years old, and downtown was thriving. It was busy,
- 28:12Speaker 11: and it's where everything wasn't as like every downtown in
- 28:14Speaker 11: America was like that. And then the mall was built,
- 28:18Speaker 11: and Charleston was kind of on the forefront of building
- 28:20Speaker 11: them all downtown rather than out in the outskirts, which
- 28:23Speaker 11: sucked down life out of downtown. Well, this mall did
- 28:26Speaker 11: suck the life out of downtown just four or five
- 28:29Speaker 11: blocks away. However, we stayed downtown because we were downtown.
- 28:35Speaker 11: Store men don't go to shopping malls. And we thrived
- 28:39Speaker 11: and thrived and grew and grew and grew. And then
- 28:42Speaker 11: investment came downtown professionals building these buildings rehaving them, which
- 28:47Speaker 11: puts people down there. And then what happens. Restaurants open
- 28:51Speaker 11: up and service stores open up, and it's just a
- 28:54Speaker 11: part of retailing. Then mall started to decline in the
- 28:57Speaker 11: late nineties. It's just the reality of it all over America,
- 29:01Speaker 11: not just in Charleston. And then strips shopping centers started
- 29:05Speaker 11: opening up on the outskirts. If you go to Columbus right, Oh,
- 29:09Speaker 11: I go to go to Easton and go to Columbus.
- 29:11Speaker 11: That's not an indoor mall, it's an outdoor mall. And
- 29:14Speaker 11: the people who owned the Town Center when they sold
- 29:17Speaker 11: their portfolio, except for the Town Center because it was
- 29:19Speaker 11: heavily in debt. The group of the Australian Big Mall group,
- 29:23Speaker 11: every mall they bought, of the twenty four that twenty
- 29:26Speaker 11: five malls of twenty four they bought, they tore them
- 29:28Speaker 11: all down and turn them into outdoor shopping many downtowns basically,
- 29:33Speaker 11: And that's just the way it is. It's all over
- 29:35Speaker 11: the country. The Internet really, you know, I might have
- 29:39Speaker 11: hurt malls a little bit. However, what we see now
- 29:43Speaker 11: is people will shop on our store locally on the
- 29:48Speaker 11: internet and then come and pick it up in the
- 29:50Speaker 11: store and then augment their purchase. And a lot of
- 29:54Speaker 11: larger retailers are seeing that. If you're paying attention and
- 29:57Speaker 11: reading like the Wall Street Journal about retailing.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Well, and you're a person that is never shy to
- 30:02Speaker 2: give opinions, so I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you your
- 30:06Speaker 2: opinion of the town Center, the current State town Center.
- 30:10Speaker 11: Yeah, it is sad to me. What the other way
- 30:14Speaker 11: it will ever work? It just needs to be leveled
- 30:16Speaker 11: and rebuilt into an entertainment and arts district. You're right
- 30:20Speaker 11: beside one hundred million dollar facility. You need restaurants, you
- 30:25Speaker 11: need entertainment style stores. That's the only way I work.
- 30:29Speaker 11: People who want to buy and have all these ideas,
- 30:31Speaker 11: they're just clueless to retail. They have zero idea what
- 30:34Speaker 11: they're doing. We're thinking about. I like people who think
- 30:36Speaker 11: about it, but again their ideas are just shot.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Well.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I mean, it was originally, you know, and this has
- 30:43Speaker 2: gone back and forth. We've had a commissioner Silango and
- 30:46Speaker 2: the mayor and others on to talk about this that
- 30:47Speaker 2: originally we talked about taking the town Center and you know,
- 30:51Speaker 2: making it into an aquatic center, and then the funding
- 30:54Speaker 2: you know, kind of went away. And that's still it's
- 30:56Speaker 2: still got something's still going to happen there. But you
- 30:59Speaker 2: got to understand that that mall is owned by a
- 31:01Speaker 2: private company as it stands right now, and that private company,
- 31:06Speaker 2: as long as they're paying their taxes and as long
- 31:08Speaker 2: as they're not, there's no you know, there's not any
- 31:11Speaker 2: major issues there. Not really a lot of people can do.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I don't understand their business model. They've done this in
- 31:16Speaker 2: other places. The whole group is purchased malls and and
- 31:18Speaker 2: let them and just let them decline. That's what they
- 31:21Speaker 2: do for tax reasons. I suppose I don't know, and
- 31:24Speaker 2: I say that to say, I agree with you one
- 31:26Speaker 2: hundred percent. I am a supporter of something for that mall.
- 31:29Speaker 2: That's not I mean.
- 31:30Speaker 3: And these people that.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Say, Tony, well, if we just put a blank in there,
- 31:33Speaker 2: it was David Busters. Uh, you know, God Blest, one
- 31:36Speaker 2: of my former producers. If they just put a David Busters,
- 31:38Speaker 2: they saved them all. If we just put a you
- 31:40Speaker 2: know whatever. No, not one store is not going to
- 31:43Speaker 2: save them all. It's not about it needs to be
- 31:45Speaker 2: an entire, an entire entertainment complex. Because it's okay level.
- 31:50Speaker 2: But when you have these people that come in for
- 31:53Speaker 2: these big events like at It Shiney and whatever. They
- 31:55Speaker 2: may play a game at six o'clock on a Friday
- 31:59Speaker 2: night and not play another one till one o'clock on Sunday, Well,
- 32:01Speaker 2: what are they gonna do.
- 32:02Speaker 11: They're not gonna sit in the hotel room. They got
- 32:04Speaker 11: to have something. Come down to Tony the Taylor we do.
- 32:06Speaker 11: We get tons, exactly tons of direct business from these
- 32:10Speaker 11: soccer tournaments and softball tournaments and these large youth sports.
- 32:15Speaker 11: If I may talk about the sports complex real quick,
- 32:17Speaker 11: We're we're just waiting on a federal funding. We are
- 32:20Speaker 11: waiting Shelley Moore and at the time Senator Mansion. We
- 32:23Speaker 11: have an ear mark, and these guys in Washington can't
- 32:26Speaker 11: get their stuff together and to get a budget done.
- 32:29Speaker 11: And when it's done, the earmark will pop up and
- 32:31Speaker 11: we will get it and then we can finish. We've
- 32:33Speaker 11: done our part. The city of Charleston in the county
- 32:35Speaker 11: has done their part, and we're just waiting for your
- 32:38Speaker 11: congress people who are douless to do their part and
- 32:43Speaker 11: that then they we'll move forward. These things just aren't
- 32:46Speaker 11: built overnight. In the Aquatic Center, there's a reason they're
- 32:52Speaker 11: all nonprofit because they are abhorribly expensive and the maintenance
- 32:55Speaker 11: on them is out of control. Can see that and
- 32:57Speaker 11: every private one has obviously. I mean, just just do
- 33:00Speaker 11: a little reading and research. There's money pits because again
- 33:05Speaker 11: you're dealing with water. I think it'd be great, but
- 33:08Speaker 11: who's going to pay for it? Are you willing to pay?
- 33:09Speaker 11: Are you willing to pay more taxes to have that?
- 33:14Speaker 11: And nobody is they're not.
- 33:16Speaker 3: He's never shied with opinions. That's one of the reason
- 33:18Speaker 3: why you and I get along so well. I think.
- 33:20Speaker 2: All right, tell us, let's recap the small business Saturday again.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Your business is going to be closed tomorrow and Friday.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Will open up on Saturday. But there's a lot of

- 33:57Speaker 2: So what you're saying is you're going to suck more
- 34:00Speaker 2: my money out of my pocket?
- 34:01Speaker 11: Right, Actually, stopped by payroll and there's four check to me.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Well, you know you all right, I appreciate it. TEXTA
- 34:12Speaker 2: says weight You both said people are coming here to shop,
- 34:14Speaker 2: but we can't support them all.
- 34:17Speaker 11: Correct, because stores don't are especially stores don't located in malls.
- 34:21Speaker 11: That's right. But your business is good, that's huge. I
- 34:25Speaker 11: mean it grows every year. It grows every year. We're

- 39:11Speaker 2: Your name is certainly familiar to those of us. Run here,
- 39:14Speaker 2: but give those who may not know who you are,
- 39:16Speaker 2: give us your background.
- 39:17Speaker 14: Sure, born and raised in Charleston. Grew up, I guess
- 39:20Speaker 14: the first in South Charleston, then the West side, and
- 39:23Speaker 14: then I'm an Eastern Connall County product. Roots du last
- 39:27Speaker 14: class of DuPont High School. We shut it down.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Okay, they said, we're done.
- 39:31Speaker 14: I guess that's it. So yeah, so I've my roots
- 39:35Speaker 14: are in Charleston. We came back in two thousand and nine.
- 39:37Speaker 14: My wife is from Pittsburgh and she came back with you.
- 39:39Speaker 14: We had our son here, worked at the Charleston Daily
- 39:41Speaker 14: mel then when the Gazette and Daily Mail merged, was
- 39:45Speaker 14: the sports editor there, and then spent my last ten
- 39:48Speaker 14: years in collegiate athletics, first at Marshall University and for
- 39:51Speaker 14: the past fifteen months at the Mountain East Conference. So
- 39:53Speaker 14: I've been at the Division one, Division two level of
- 39:55Speaker 14: college athletics. So very non linear journey here. But I'm
- 40:00Speaker 14: back to you know, back home, you know. And uh,
- 40:03Speaker 14: I grew up running around Plaza East and going to
- 40:06Speaker 14: Capital Market when it was still a recycling facility, like
- 40:09Speaker 14: you know, so you know, I understand the history there
- 40:12Speaker 14: and the tradition and the nostalgia that comes with it.
- 40:15Speaker 14: And when I saw it, you know, I just I
- 40:17Speaker 14: went after it with Gusto.
- 40:18Speaker 2: What was it that made that made it appealing to you?
- 40:21Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean the the the you know, we we
- 40:24Speaker 14: we took my son there when he was you know,
- 40:27Speaker 14: when he was a toddler, and I you know, I think,
- 40:32Speaker 14: you know, convincing people that I'm not just a sports
- 40:34Speaker 14: guy was a thing that I was at least concerned about.
- 40:37Speaker 14: The the hiring committee seemedless concerned about it as I
- 40:40Speaker 14: went through. But you know, I'm a music guy, I'm
- 40:43Speaker 14: an arts guy. I love museums, I love food. You know,
- 40:47Speaker 14: my interests are varied. And you know, Capital Market for
- 40:50Speaker 14: us was you know, uh, you know, a cornerstone of Charleston,
- 40:54Speaker 14: and it's where we took you know, out of town
- 40:55Speaker 14: visitor outse That's where we you know, it's it's what
- 40:58Speaker 14: we wanted when we wanted to.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Showcase Charleston and what we were about. That's where we went.
- 41:01Speaker 2: I was gonna say because whenever people come to Charleston,
- 41:04Speaker 2: my experience has been and my wife's company would say
- 41:06Speaker 2: the same thing.
- 41:07Speaker 3: When they came to Charleston, they'd say.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Well, you know, we have time and evening, where do
- 41:11Speaker 2: we need to go? That was always number one. You
- 41:13Speaker 2: got to go to Capitol Marks.
- 41:14Speaker 3: One hundred percent.
- 41:15Speaker 14: So there's established brand there and I have an appreciation
- 41:18Speaker 14: for that nostalgia, the memories that people make, you know,
- 41:21Speaker 14: sorting through through pictures, I can see my son with pumpkins.
- 41:24Speaker 14: We went there and picked out our Christmas trees. You know,
- 41:27Speaker 14: when we lived in South Hills in Charleston, it was
- 41:29Speaker 14: always a big thing for me to have the hanging flowers,
- 41:32Speaker 14: you know, So my wife and I would go and
- 41:34Speaker 14: pick out the flowers, and you know, we'd go into
- 41:37Speaker 14: inside the Capital Market. We were there for an event
- 41:39Speaker 14: a few weeks ago, and my son wanted to go
- 41:40Speaker 14: in and get something from the sushi.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Garden, you know.
- 41:43Speaker 14: So like it's just it has everything, and it's everything
- 41:47Speaker 14: that I want Charleston to be and so to kind
- 41:50Speaker 14: of be a caretaker of it, like it's a really
- 41:52Speaker 14: big deal to me.
- 41:53Speaker 3: What is your vision for Capitol Market?
- 41:54Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean we want to grow. There's challenges there.
- 41:58Speaker 14: There's built in challenges as far as it being kind
- 42:00Speaker 14: of land locked on all four sides with parking lots
- 42:04Speaker 14: or Smith Street. But we want to grow, find ways
- 42:07Speaker 14: to grow, find ways to engage the community more and
- 42:12Speaker 14: create that next generation of people who care about the market.
- 42:15Speaker 3: You know.
- 42:15Speaker 14: That's you know, my son's thirteen years old, so I
- 42:18Speaker 14: want him to grow up and have children and that's
- 42:21Speaker 14: their destination on the weekends or the evenings or whatever.
- 42:25Speaker 14: So I want it to be a really family friendly
- 42:28Speaker 14: place and you know, a place where everybody goes like
- 42:30Speaker 14: you're saying, and kind of be that gem of Charleston.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Can you hang out with me here one second? Yeah,
- 42:36Speaker 2: because here's a shocker.
- 42:37Speaker 3: We went a little bit long with Tony the Taylor.
- 42:39Speaker 2: That's fine, imagine that Tony's worth it.

- 45:13Speaker 2: hundred miles radius. That he says independent stores within a
- 45:15Speaker 2: two hundred mile radius about nine. I was a little
- 45:18Speaker 2: high on that, So they're about nine or so within
- 45:21Speaker 2: a two hundred mile radius. Chuck McGill is here, the
- 45:24Speaker 2: new director of Capital Market. So we're getting into Thanksgiving
- 45:27Speaker 2: and Christmas, always a big time at the Capitol Markets.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Give us an idea of some things that are planned
- 45:32Speaker 2: for holidays.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Sure, yeah, I'm coming in at the right time the
- 45:35Speaker 3: bur months or the wrong time. No to look at
- 45:38Speaker 3: it that that's always.
- 45:39Speaker 14: My favorite time of the year. So I'm an October baby,
- 45:42Speaker 14: So I'm a fall guy.
- 45:43Speaker 3: I'm a winter guy. But we have the Feasts of
- 45:45Speaker 3: the Seven Fishes.
- 45:46Speaker 14: My first day is Monday, and we have an event
- 45:49Speaker 14: that night that's already sold out, Feast of the Seven Fishes.
- 45:52Speaker 14: That's a that's a huge deal. And then on the
- 45:55Speaker 14: tenth is the market mingle, the marry market mingle. So
- 45:58Speaker 14: that's the next big thing. You can go on cap
- 46:00Speaker 14: market dot net and get tickets stills for that one.
- 46:02Speaker 14: So those are our big events, and then you know
- 46:05Speaker 14: we're just getting you know, getting the market all festive.
- 46:08Speaker 14: I mean there's there's been people painting windows, and the
- 46:11Speaker 14: Christmas trees are there, and there's you know lights everywhere,
- 46:14Speaker 14: and of course, uh, you know we're gonna go judge
- 46:17Speaker 14: Christmas trees after this, you know, at Holly Jolly Brawley,
- 46:20Speaker 14: So we're involved with that and it's just a really
- 46:23Speaker 14: exciting time to you know, dive in with with two feet.
- 46:26Speaker 2: And you talk about and this is what Tony and
- 46:28Speaker 2: I were talking about a little earlier about Charleston really
- 46:31Speaker 2: becoming a holiday Christmas destination. I mean between Holly Jolly
- 46:37Speaker 2: Brawley and the Light the Night and just everything else
- 46:42Speaker 2: through the largest Christmas parade around that'll be next week,
- 46:45Speaker 2: and and what's going on at Capital Market and just
- 46:48Speaker 2: I mean there's so many things going on in Charleston
- 46:51Speaker 2: at one time for Christmas.
- 46:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 14: I got my my market email set up and the calendar. Candice,
- 46:57Speaker 14: the director of Market and Communications at the Capital Market,
- 47:00Speaker 14: started adding things to my calendar and I was like
- 47:02Speaker 14: flipping through and I was like, Okay, this event's that night,
- 47:05Speaker 14: this of the parades, this night, the market mingles, this night,
- 47:08Speaker 14: it's loaded. And I think that speaks well of Charleston
- 47:11Speaker 14: that there's always something going on and the synergy that
- 47:14Speaker 14: the market has with downtown and you know, there's there's
- 47:18Speaker 14: you know, trolley's going around taking you from place to place,
- 47:20Speaker 14: and there's vendors and there's music, and there's something to
- 47:24Speaker 14: do every night, you know, this weekend with the tree
- 47:26Speaker 14: lighting ceremony. So I think it's really cool the vibe
- 47:29Speaker 14: and the momentum that Charleston has, especially around the holidays.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Talking to Chuck mcguild again, who is the new director
- 47:34Speaker 2: of a Capital Market, I want to throw this in here,
- 47:36Speaker 2: this little promotion that we're going to be doing starting
- 47:38Speaker 2: next week. You can save up to sixty percent off,
- 47:42Speaker 2: says WV Bargains.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Won't be caught.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Save up to sixty percent off on items like certificates
- 47:46Speaker 2: to Eddie's Tyron Service, pest control services from Spotlight Pest Control, gas,
- 47:50Speaker 2: fireplaces from Fireside, and patio tent rentals from Quantum, sixty
- 47:53Speaker 2: percent off car detailing services from Oaks Citiado, Spa jewelry
- 47:56Speaker 2: certificates from pettit jwelry tax services from Penny Pincher, certificates
- 48:00Speaker 2: on bar furniture, and more items all across the valley
- 48:02Speaker 2: and across the state, really across state lines too in
- 48:06Speaker 2: our surrounding states where we have WVRC media properties. And
- 48:09Speaker 2: again it's going to kick off a next Monday. It'll
- 48:11Speaker 2: run through the fifth wv bargains dot Com. Wv Bargains
- 48:14Speaker 2: is a wv RC media promotion.
- 48:16Speaker 3: All right.
- 48:17Speaker 2: So we talked about some of the struggles of capital market,
- 48:20Speaker 2: mainly not of your own doing but or the market's undoing,
- 48:23Speaker 2: but just because you are kind of landlocked there. But
- 48:25Speaker 2: on your wish list, and I'm not saying these are
- 48:28Speaker 2: going to be promises from Chuck McGill, okay, but on
- 48:31Speaker 2: your wish list, what would you like to see?
- 48:34Speaker 3: I think I've been really encouraged.
- 48:36Speaker 14: So I've been in Huntington for nine years, but We've
- 48:38Speaker 14: come back all the time because Charleston's my home. My
- 48:41Speaker 14: mom and dad are here, my aunts and uncles are here,
- 48:43Speaker 14: cousins are here. And what I've seen from the downtown
- 48:47Speaker 14: and how you know, a rising tideless all boats situation,
- 48:50Speaker 14: so you get five Street and then you get Short
- 48:52Speaker 14: Story for example. I think having the area around the
- 48:57Speaker 14: market also lifted up benefit the market. Yeah, so I
- 49:01Speaker 14: think that's a very long term, ambitious goal. But with
- 49:05Speaker 14: the ballpark there and the light, the night and all
- 49:07Speaker 14: that brings and kind of the the natural flow to
- 49:11Speaker 14: the market, if if the area around the market was
- 49:14Speaker 14: also enhanced, I think that would benefit the market a lot.
- 49:18Speaker 14: With its proximity to the interstate and the you know,
- 49:21Speaker 14: the interchanges there and the easy on and off, I
- 49:24Speaker 14: would love to see that area kind of lifted up
- 49:27Speaker 14: like the Downtown's been listed it lifted up. But that's
- 49:28Speaker 14: a you know, very long way outside of my control
- 49:31Speaker 14: exactly exactly.
- 49:33Speaker 3: But that's why that's why we call it a wish list. Yeah,
- 49:34Speaker 3: you know, absolutely, And you're.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Talking about being in Huntington. I think it's amazing what
- 49:38Speaker 2: they have done with Pullman Square in Huntington because I
- 49:40Speaker 2: was a student at Marshall in the early nineteen nineties
- 49:43Speaker 2: and we all remember the super Block. It had been
- 49:45Speaker 2: talked about going back to the eighties. They're going to
- 49:47Speaker 2: build this big thing down and it was just promise
- 49:49Speaker 2: after promise broke. It and then loan thehold one day,
- 49:52Speaker 2: Pullman Square pops up and it has totally revitalized that.
- 49:56Speaker 14: Area absolutely, and that's a great blueprint for us to follow.
- 50:00Speaker 14: And I've watched that, you know, I went to Huntington
- 50:02Speaker 14: in twenty sixteen and was able to watch that kind
- 50:04Speaker 14: of evolve over the years.
- 50:05Speaker 3: So that's that's, you know, in in game, that would
- 50:08Speaker 3: be my top goal.
- 50:10Speaker 2: All right, well, Chuck, I appreciate you stopping by the show,
- 50:14Speaker 2: and I know you.
- 50:14Speaker 3: Can to do great things over there.
- 50:16Speaker 2: You got a great marketing director and Candice, but you
- 50:18Speaker 2: also got a great board of directors over there. Big
- 50:19Speaker 2: shout out to my man Steve Keith and there you
- 50:21Speaker 2: guys over there. So we'll let you get out of
- 50:23Speaker 2: here and let you go downtown and judge from Christmas
- 50:25Speaker 2: trees and we'll have you on a few more times
- 50:27Speaker 2: between now and Christmas, and of course you're always welcome
- 50:29Speaker 2: here throughout out the year. Appreciate you, man, All right,
- 50:31Speaker 2: thank you, Dave, All right, thanks a lot. We're going
- 50:33Speaker 2: to transition over talking to my man TJ. Meadows coming
- 50:35Speaker 2: up a talk line at the top. Hang out with
- 50:38Speaker 2: me just once. Can you give me like two or
- 50:39Speaker 2: three minutes because I need to talk to you a
- 50:41Speaker 2: little bit. Okay, but but I'm gonna turn your microphone off.
- 50:43Speaker 5: Now.
- 50:43Speaker 2: How's that all right?
- 50:45Speaker 3: DJ Meadows is here? What you got on talking?
- 50:47Speaker 2: It's the after show, buddy, that's what you stayed around for,
- 50:49Speaker 2: the after show, the after party.
- 50:52Speaker 15: A ten oh six E. Gordon Ghee joins us today.
- 50:57Speaker 15: You know, doctor Gee penned another commentary that was in
- 50:59Speaker 15: the Hill talking about college athletics.
- 51:02Speaker 3: He's been talking more now that he's not.
- 51:03Speaker 2: A president, which I really enjoy.
- 51:06Speaker 3: So we're gonna get into that with Gordon.
- 51:07Speaker 15: We'll probably talk Thanksgiving in a host of other things
- 51:10Speaker 15: as well with him. Bridget Lambert of the West Virginia
- 51:12Speaker 15: Retailers Association on Black Friday joins us at ten thirty.
- 51:15Speaker 15: Hobby's in at eleven six. He's got issues with what
- 51:18Speaker 15: the CDC has done about vaccine mornings courtesy of Robert
- 51:22Speaker 15: Kennedy Junior. So we'll talk about that and I'm sure
- 51:26Speaker 15: other you know, top like, there's nothing to talk about.
- 51:29Speaker 15: There's nothing going on that Hobby would want to opine about.
- 51:32Speaker 15: My buddy Mike McKenna has a great piece out. He's
- 51:35Speaker 15: a columnist for The Washington Times talking about Thanksgiving. We'll
- 51:39Speaker 15: speak with him on that. I want to pick his
- 51:41Speaker 15: brain on a few things Trump. You know, he used
- 51:43Speaker 15: to be He was in the Trump administration during the
- 51:45Speaker 15: first term, and so he's got that unique perspective as well.
- 51:49Speaker 15: I want to talk abouit about tariffs. I want to
- 51:51Speaker 15: talk about going after Comy and several other things with
- 51:56Speaker 15: Mike as well.
- 51:57Speaker 2: All right, now, programming note, there will be no local
- 51:59Speaker 2: show of mine tomorrow and Friday. I'll be back on Monday,
- 52:02Speaker 2: but Metro News Midday is coming up later today. We'll
- 52:04Speaker 2: have a best of Metro News Midday tomorrow and then

- 52:09Speaker 2: for Metro News Midday, I will be here. Speedy Bevans
- 52:12Speaker 2: Broadcasting legend will be my guest. Yeah, pretty cool, Pretty cool.
