  Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
• 0:39
Speaker 3: Me and Hollis Lewis, we have a couple of guests,
• 0:43
Speaker 3: a couple of young men that Hollis is going to introduce.
• 0:48
Speaker 3: And I will say this. I'm surrounded by.
• 0:54
Speaker 4: Three, I don't want to give you a young man.
• 0:57
Speaker 4: I don't want to include you in the young man.
• 0:59
Speaker 4: You can include me in that.
• 1:00
Speaker 3: But a group of G-Dub former athletes and current athletes.
• 1:05
Speaker 4: There you go. The real heel over here. Whatever, whatever.
• 1:10
Speaker 4: The real heel. See, that's one I've never heard.
• 1:13
Speaker 3: I don't even want to hear that again.
• 1:15
Speaker 5: Y'all the fake heel over there. All right, so we
• 1:18
Speaker 5: got G-Dub's quarterback, running back. I'm going to let you
• 1:20
Speaker 5: guys introduce yourselves. Start with Deshaun.
• 1:22
  Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
• 1:23
  Speaker 6: Deshaun Isabel, quarterback.
• 1:25
Speaker 4: Jaden Black, running back. Yes, sir. All right, so.
• 1:31
Speaker 4: An amazing start to the season. So we're what? I
• 1:35
Speaker 4: don't want to say we. Eight no. You can say we.
• 1:38
Speaker 4: I don't want to say we. So eight no.
• 1:41
Speaker 3: Tell me a little how you feel you got there.
• 1:45
Speaker 3: Like what did it take to get there?
• 1:49
Speaker 8: I think it was just like all of us coming
• 1:52
Speaker 8: on the same accord and then just us watching film.
• 1:55
Speaker 8: We live now and just everything, just our mindset of
• 1:59
Speaker 8: we need to all just win and we want to
• 2:01
Speaker 8: end up with that one goal of winning the state chip.
• 2:04
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 2:05
  Speaker 7: Yeah, man.
• 2:05
Speaker 6: We just, we put in the work during the summer
• 2:07
Speaker 6: and I mean, we just go into the mindset with
• 2:10
Speaker 6: everything that we're going to play as hard as we
• 2:12
Speaker 6: can and it should pay off for us no matter what.
• 2:16
Speaker 5: Now, Deshaun, you are, you transferred from, you played at Capitol.
• 2:19
Speaker 5: I think you was kind of part-time. You started a
• 2:22
Speaker 5: lot of games for Capitol last year and now you
• 2:24
Speaker 5: come in into GW.
• 2:25
Speaker 4: How has that transition been for you? I mean, it's good.
• 2:28
Speaker 6: As soon as I got there, they pretty much accepted
• 2:30
Speaker 6: me and they pushed me to the same limits I
• 2:33
Speaker 6: was pushed to when I was at Capitol. And it was,
• 2:36
Speaker 6: it was a, it was an easy environment to step in.
• 2:38
Speaker 6: Like it was a brotherhood.
• 2:39
  Speaker 4: Nice.
• 2:41
Speaker 3: So making that transition and, and like for somebody like me,
• 2:45
Speaker 3: it was, you know, it, I can't even imagine like
• 2:49
Speaker 3: leaving a place that I'm comfortable with.
• 2:51
Speaker 4: So how, like how, how long did it take you?
• 2:55
Speaker 3: I'll say, I don't know how long is the right thing, but,
• 2:58
Speaker 3: I would assume it takes you a while to get
• 3:00
Speaker 3: adjusted to a new system, a new school system, new people.
• 3:07
Speaker 4: Was there a challenge in that at all?
• 3:09
Speaker 6: I mean, sort of just with me being an underclassman,
• 3:11
Speaker 6: like I was just stepping in and at Capitol, I
• 3:14
Speaker 6: kind of like, I was also an underclassman there, but
• 3:18
Speaker 6: I had somewhat of a leader role. And now like
• 3:21
  Speaker 6: I was transferring to a new school where I'm, I'm
• 3:24
Speaker 6: used to being a leader and I, They still gave
• 3:26
Speaker 6: me the same treatment. I stepped in. I had to
• 3:28
Speaker 6: be a leader from the jump.
• 3:30
Speaker 5: Now, Coach Edwards, again, he's a little older now, so
• 3:33
Speaker 5: I'm sure he's calmed down maybe just a smidge.
• 3:37
Speaker 4: Maybe a smidge. But, you know, I played for Coach Edwards.
• 3:40
Speaker 5: I was his first class when he came to GW
• 3:43
Speaker 5: in 96. So we'll get to you in a minute.
• 3:47
Speaker 5: Let you answer this too, Jaden. But how was playing
• 3:50
Speaker 5: for Coach Edwards? Because he can be very intense at times.
• 3:53
Speaker 5: He can be very jokey at times. So it's always
• 3:56
Speaker 5: kind of you got to gauge that situation right.
• 3:59
Speaker 4: I mean, it varies.
• 4:01
Speaker 6: Like, of course, when it's not time to go to war,
• 4:04
  Speaker 6: he's playful and he's a nice guy. But when it's
• 4:09
Speaker 6: time for the Friday night, when them lights come on,
• 4:11
Speaker 6: he's serious. Like, it's no joke. And he was somebody,
• 4:14
Speaker 6: he was probably like the first person I got close
• 4:16
Speaker 6: with when I got there. He took me in immediately
• 4:19
Speaker 6: and treated me like I was one of his as
• 4:21
Speaker 6: soon as I got there.
• 4:22
Speaker 4: So I love Coach Edwards. Yeah, how about you, Jayden?
• 4:25
Speaker 4: I agree with what he said. Yeah.
• 4:31
Speaker 3: You know, and there's a, I think the trend in
• 4:35
Speaker 3: coaching is somewhat kind of going the other way to
• 4:38
Speaker 3: where coaches are not as, quote, forceful and may not
• 4:44
Speaker 3: be a yelling, screaming, not being trying to push you
• 4:47
Speaker 3: and trying to get the most out of you. I
• 4:50
Speaker 3: never really had played with a coach that was not
• 4:54
Speaker 3: that way. So I'm wondering if by any chance you
• 5:00
Speaker 3: would find yourself in a situation where there's a coach
• 5:02
Speaker 3: that– or let me just say it this way. How
• 5:05
Speaker 3: much do you appreciate the effort and the madness that
• 5:09
Speaker 3: comes with Coach Edwards?
• 5:10
Speaker 6: I mean, it's amazing. I always felt like if you
• 5:15
Speaker 6: was coached harder, you would play harder. That's just what
• 5:18
Speaker 6: it is with me.
• 5:20
  Speaker 4: Okay. Okay.
• 5:22
Speaker 8: I think if they– try to push you harder than
• 5:24
Speaker 8: they care about you a lot more than if they don't. Because, like,
• 5:29
Speaker 8: I know Coach Kearns and Coach Edwards, if they don't
• 5:31
Speaker 8: yell at you, either they're super mad or they just
• 5:34
Speaker 8: don't care about you.
• 5:36
Speaker 4: So that's what I like. He cared a lot about me.
• 5:38
Speaker 4: Because I got it a lot.
• 5:42
Speaker 3: And, you know, it's funny because I say that, you know,
• 5:45
Speaker 3: my coaches in college, Sonny Randall and then Homer Crittle
• 5:48
Speaker 3: at South Charleston– you know, I'm, quote, supposed to be
• 5:53
Speaker 3: a good player. Brother, there was never any time in
• 5:57
Speaker 3: practice did I ever think, or even in a game
• 6:01
Speaker 3: if I did something wrong, never was there like this, like, okay,
• 6:04
Speaker 3: it's going to be all right. It was yelling, screaming,
• 6:08
Speaker 3: and back in the day, grabbing your face mask and
• 6:11
Speaker 3: all those kind of things. And while a lot of
• 6:14
Speaker 3: those things are, quote, illegal now, I'll make the case
• 6:18
Speaker 3: that if you don't have a coach, that is that way, man,
• 6:24
Speaker 3: I don't know where the best of you come. I
• 6:26
Speaker 3: don't know where it comes from, because it's just hard
• 6:29
Speaker 3: not to give it all.
• 6:30
  Speaker 4: 100%. I agree with you.
• 6:32
Speaker 5: So 8-0 this season so far. What would you say,
• 6:36
Speaker 5: because you guys don't play defense, just offense, right?
• 6:40
Speaker 4: Just offense. One way.
• 6:41
Speaker 5: So what has been the strength? Because, again, we've seen
• 6:44
Speaker 5: the numbers you're putting up, Jay. We've seen the numbers
• 6:45
Speaker 5: you're putting up, Deshaun. What do you think you guys
• 6:48
Speaker 5: have done really, really well so far?
• 6:51
Speaker 4: I mean, we just like to ride the hot hand.
• 6:53
Speaker 6: Whoever's hot that night, we go out and we ride
• 6:55
Speaker 6: them for the game. And then we like to jump
• 6:59
Speaker 6: out on teams. And if we can get ahead, then
• 7:01
Speaker 6: we just try and share the ball around with everybody.
• 7:03
Speaker 6: And as long as everybody's happy, that means the intensity
• 7:06
Speaker 6: will never go down.
• 7:07
Speaker 4: I like that. I like that.
• 7:10
Speaker 3: And so both of you, do you both just play
• 7:16
Speaker 3: offense or do you play both?
• 7:19
Speaker 4: Offensive defense? We just play offense.
• 7:20
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 7:21
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 7:21
Speaker 3: So if you were to play defense, what would be
• 7:26
Speaker 3: your position that you would like to play?
• 7:29
Speaker 6: I mean, my whole life I was always a safety
• 7:31
Speaker 6: until I got to high school.
• 7:33
Speaker 4: Okay. I will probably be outside linebacker. There you go.
• 7:38
Speaker 4: He had to get some defenses. So who do we
• 7:41
Speaker 4: have coming up this week? Parkersburg South.
• 7:43
Speaker 5: Parkersburg South. So what are we looking to do? How
• 7:47
Speaker 5: was your assessment of them so far?
• 7:50
Speaker 8: Just really that we need to just run the ball
• 7:53
Speaker 8: and just our line's going to.
• 7:55
  Speaker 4: Be real good.
• 7:56
Speaker 8: It should be good. Just protect the ball, do what
• 7:59
Speaker 8: we need to do, and everything's going to be okay.
• 8:01
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 8:02
Speaker 5: And, again, that's this Friday, 7 o'clock at On the Hill,
• 8:07
Speaker 5: DW versus Parkersburg. And it's going to be alumni night
• 8:10
Speaker 5: too and senior night as well.
• 8:12
Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Night before the game, what's your prep?
• 8:19
Speaker 4: A lot of film.
• 8:22
Speaker 6: Just make sure you eat right, hydrate, and just make
• 8:27
Speaker 6: sure you stay in touch with all your teammates and
• 8:29
Speaker 6: make sure they're on the same page as you.
• 8:32
Speaker 8: I watch film with my dad, and then I take
• 8:34
Speaker 8: an ice bath, and then I go to my mom's
• 8:36
Speaker 8: house before the night ends. Because every morning before the game,
• 8:41
Speaker 8: I go to my mom's house and just listen to music.
• 8:44
Speaker 8: Just have a fun time before the game.
• 8:46
Speaker 4: I like that, I like that. Yeah, me too. Yeah,
• 8:47
  Speaker 4: I like that a lot. So I was a music
• 8:50
  Speaker 4: guy too.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: And I think there's a whole lot of players that
• 8:53
Speaker 3: do like to listen to music. I might be the
• 8:56
Speaker 3: only one that listens to slow music.
• 8:59
Speaker 4: You got it? I listen to slow music too. Yeah, see,
• 9:01
Speaker 4: because it calms you down. It does.
• 9:03
Speaker 3: Like, I don't need the hype, because it's already all
• 9:07
Speaker 3: through me already, because I already know we're getting ready
• 9:09
  Speaker 3: to play.
• 9:10
Speaker 4: So I need something slow and easy to bring me down. Yeah, 100%.
• 9:14
  Speaker 7: You know?
• 9:15
Speaker 5: So, again, you guys are both offensive players. So I
• 9:17
Speaker 5: want to talk a little bit about your offensive coordinator.
• 9:19
Speaker 5: He was actually I actually coached him when I was
• 9:23
Speaker 5: at GW. I coached after I moved back. So what
• 9:25
Speaker 5: has it been experience of.
• 9:26
Speaker 4: Playing for him? It's real good.
• 9:30
Speaker 8: He likes to connect with the players on a deeper
• 9:32
Speaker 8: level than just football. Like he's very loving and he'll
• 9:36
Speaker 8: text you and ask you about your day and actually
• 9:39
Speaker 8: about your grades before even football.
• 9:41
Speaker 4: So he's a nice coach. Nice person, too. I agree.
• 9:43
Speaker 6: Just to piggyback off what Jaden said. I mean, he
• 9:47
Speaker 6: soon as I like I said, I transfer from Capital.
• 9:49
Speaker 6: And like as soon as I got there, he was
• 9:51
Speaker 6: just like we snapped immediately. Like he more took me
• 9:55
Speaker 6: in as like a friend at first. And then the
• 9:57
Speaker 6: coaching side came and then he was.– then that's when
• 10:01
Speaker 6: the hard-nosed coaching came towards me, and then that's when
• 10:04
Speaker 6: I learned we would be all right.
• 10:06
Speaker 5: It's a funny story because I actually went to high
• 10:08
Speaker 5: school with his parents, and I ended up– we went
• 10:10
Speaker 5: to high school together, and then I ended up coaching
• 10:13
Speaker 5: him when I came back to GW and down. He
• 10:15
Speaker 5: look up, he's the offensive coordinator, wide receiver at Wayne State.
• 10:19
Speaker 5: So just one of those kids, very cerebral, and I
• 10:21
Speaker 5: think he's going to be really, really good moving into
• 10:23
Speaker 5: the future. Well, and I think guys like that, I think,
• 10:29
Speaker 5: learn the game, love putting it back out, giving it
• 10:33
Speaker 5: out to somebody else. And a lot of times, if
• 10:36
Speaker 5: they have just that right kind of personality, from the
• 10:40
Speaker 5: yelling to the– to just the general talking, I think
• 10:44
Speaker 5: they have a huge opportunity to be successful because, you know,
• 10:48
Speaker 5: you got two of your stars already, you know, talking
• 10:51
Speaker 5: about you in a good way.
• 10:53
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 10:53
Speaker 3: So, you know, I'd like to see that to be
• 10:56
Speaker 3: something that could grow even further.
• 10:58
Speaker 5: 100%. And, Deshaun, just from a quarterback perspective, like, you know,
• 11:03
Speaker 5: you– A dual-threat quarterback, so you can run the ball,
• 11:06
Speaker 5: you do a little bit of the zone read options,
• 11:08
Speaker 5: you can pass the ball. Has the game, like, at
• 11:11
Speaker 5: this point in your career, being a sophomore, having a
• 11:13
Speaker 5: lot of playing time as a freshman starting this season,
• 11:15
Speaker 5: has it slowed down for you a little bit?
• 11:17
Speaker 4: I mean, of course.
• 11:17
Speaker 6: Just, you know, you start getting out there and you
• 11:20
Speaker 6: play more, you get experience, then you just learn how
• 11:24
Speaker 6: to go with the situation, and then your mind slows
• 11:28
Speaker 6: down and you be out there and you just play.
• 11:30
Speaker 4: It's just the flow of the game.
• 11:31
  Speaker 7: Nice.
• 11:32
Speaker 4: I like that. I like that.
• 11:33
Speaker 5: And Jaden, you know, being what you did as a freshman,
• 11:37
Speaker 5: did you feel any pressure coming into this year to
• 11:39
Speaker 5: sort of match or supersede those numbers?
• 11:42
Speaker 8: I think there's always some type of pressure from everybody
• 11:45
Speaker 8: else or just from yourself. So, yeah, I felt a
• 11:47
Speaker 8: little bit of pressure. But honestly, just I went to
• 11:50
Speaker 8: the beach before the season started. So that doing that
• 11:54
Speaker 8: just took a lot of pressure off of me and.
• 11:57
Speaker 8: Just the coaches and my dad preparing me for the
• 11:59
Speaker 8: season just took a lot of pressure.
• 12:01
Speaker 4: See, I see how you go. You the relax, bro.
• 12:04
Speaker 4: Bro be relaxed. He listen to slow jams, going to
• 12:07
Speaker 4: the beach, he chilling.
• 12:10
Speaker 3: And I think that there's an interesting component to what
• 12:13
Speaker 3: it is that you do, you know, prior to the season,
• 12:18
Speaker 3: prior to a game. Like, to your point, listening to
• 12:22
Speaker 3: slow music, like you said, you know that's what you
• 12:25
Speaker 3: need to do because it's going to bring you down,
• 12:28
Speaker 3: slow you down a little bit.
• 12:30
Speaker 4: And it doesn't matter if you.
• 12:31
Speaker 3: Like fast music, you like rap, you like country, you
• 12:35
Speaker 3: like whatever. There's a reason and a justifiable reason that
• 12:39
Speaker 3: I think that some people, the public, I don't think
• 12:41
Speaker 3: really realizes how much music does for football as a
• 12:46
Speaker 3: football player to help you get yourself set and ready
• 12:50
Speaker 3: to go for a game. Do you think it is
• 12:53
Speaker 3: important for you to both of you? I'm asking this
• 12:56
Speaker 3: to both of you. It's super important that you have
• 12:58
Speaker 3: that music around or you would know what to do.
• 13:01
  Speaker 4: Am I right?
• 13:02
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 13:03
  Speaker 6: I mean, I usually during games, I'll be, I like
• 13:06
Speaker 6: to be serious. I don't like to play around at all.
• 13:08
Speaker 6: So I came up here to G dub. I go
• 13:11
Speaker 6: in the sideline. We go, we on defense. I see
• 13:14
Speaker 6: him over there playing around, dancing, all the music. I mean,
• 13:17
Speaker 6: it kind of just, It made me come out of
• 13:19
Speaker 6: my shell a little bit. And I started dancing with
• 13:21
Speaker 6: him a little bit at times and just enjoying myself
• 13:24
Speaker 6: on the sideline just to take myself away from the
• 13:27
Speaker 6: game just a little bit.
• 13:28
Speaker 5: Now, we often talk about on this show, we grew
• 13:30
Speaker 5: up in the era, obviously, where we didn't have the
• 13:32
Speaker 5: Internet and everything like that. So, like, you know, I
• 13:34
Speaker 5: can particularly remember in high school, you know, Saturdays and
• 13:38
Speaker 5: Sundays was like college football day, NFL football all day,
• 13:43
Speaker 5: you know, Mondays, all that. So, do you guys, like,
• 13:46
Speaker 5: watch a lot of football at college and NFL? Or
• 13:49
Speaker 5: is it something you more, like, highlights and then I'll,
• 13:52
Speaker 5: you know, I'll just worry about playing?
• 13:54
  Speaker 8: I'm more of a, I don't really watch until it's, like,
• 13:56
  Speaker 8: a big game. Like, I'm an O-State fan, so I
• 13:59
Speaker 8: don't watch until they get to the playoffs. Or, like,
• 14:01
Speaker 8: I like the Buccaneers, so I don't watch. Well, we
• 14:04
  Speaker 8: doing the bad.
• 14:04
Speaker 4: This year, but it's okay.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: That's because you're in the wrong conference. You shouldn't be
• 14:08
Speaker 3: in the conference with us, right?
• 14:10
  Speaker 7: I agree.
• 14:11
  Speaker 2: Yeah, we.
• 14:12
Speaker 6: I mean, I watch games at times, but like he said,
• 14:15
Speaker 6: I'm a guy who likes to watch his teams, and
• 14:19
Speaker 6: I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan, and we not looking too good.
• 14:23
Speaker 4: You inherited that, huh, from Pops? Yeah, yeah. You inherited that.
• 14:27
  Speaker 9: Grew up.
• 14:27
  Speaker 4: It wasn't a lot.
• 14:31
Speaker 3: Well, fortunately or unfortunately, I grew up a Browns fan
• 14:34
Speaker 3: because of my dad.
• 14:36
Speaker 4: That's even worse. It is. Bro, you got a couple
• 14:41
Speaker 4: more of those, bro. We're going to end the show.
• 14:44
Speaker 4: Y'all doing all right this year, though. Y'all doing all
• 14:47
Speaker 4: right this year, though.
• 14:48
Speaker 5: Well, I ain't worried about them now. I got the
• 14:50
Speaker 5: Vikings going. You Minnesota all day. They cut the check. Yeah.
• 14:56
Speaker 4: So tell me a little bit about what's your future goals.
• 15:01
Speaker 6: Man, we want to win a state championship three years straight.
• 15:04
Speaker 6: That's the only goal we got.
• 15:06
  Speaker 2: Love it.
• 15:07
  Speaker 4: Okay. Okay.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: Now, individual goal. What's your goal as a future athlete?
• 15:15
Speaker 3: It might not be athletics, but what's your goal?
• 15:20
Speaker 6: Just to go play at a D1 level, whether it
• 15:23
Speaker 6: be at football or basketball. I mean, I just want
• 15:27
Speaker 6: to play at a D1 level.
• 15:29
Speaker 4: Doesn't matter what sport, just as long as it's D1. Right.
• 15:33
Speaker 8: I want to go D1 in football and then maybe
• 15:36
Speaker 8: get my psychological degree.
• 15:39
Speaker 4: Okay. That's what my daughter's majoring in currently. That's nice, man.
• 15:43
Speaker 5: So what is something, because oftentimes we talk about, you know,
• 15:50
Speaker 5: especially if you like us, we play football since we
• 15:52
Speaker 5: was six, seven years old, all the way. He played
• 15:55
Speaker 5: in the NFL, obviously. I played all the way through college.
• 15:57
Speaker 5: and a lot of time your identity gets wrapped up
• 16:00
Speaker 5: in that. So what are some of your other interests
• 16:02
Speaker 5: outside of athletics and sports?
• 16:06
Speaker 6: I've been looking into taking a trade at Carver to
• 16:10
  Speaker 6: be an electrician.
• 16:12
  Speaker 4: Nice. That's awesome.
• 16:13
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 16:14
Speaker 8: If football don't work so, like psychology or getting a
• 16:18
  Speaker 8: trade in plumbing.
• 16:19
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 16:20
Speaker 5: Well, again, and I say that with the caveat, even
• 16:23
Speaker 5: if you're looking at psychology, It can always work out
• 16:26
Speaker 5: because we can always work in athletics in some capacity. So,
• 16:30
Speaker 5: you know, as far as a professional career, if that's
• 16:32
Speaker 5: not the path, you can work within the sports psychologist
• 16:36
Speaker 5: and doing different things in and around the sports. So
• 16:39
Speaker 5: it's always that little corny NCAA commercial. I went professional
• 16:42
Speaker 5: in something other than, you know, but you can also,
• 16:45
Speaker 5: you know, maintain and work within the sport and just
• 16:47
Speaker 5: grow in a different capacity.
• 16:49
Speaker 4: And there's the opportunity, you know, to.
• 16:54
Speaker 4: Actually be able to what I call a true give back.
• 16:59
Speaker 3: Being back home, you know, being able to do anything
• 17:03
Speaker 3: that can touch a athlete. Doesn't matter where he goes,
• 17:07
Speaker 3: who he is, who she is, what teams they play.
• 17:11
Speaker 3: There's just a place in there where every now and
• 17:12
Speaker 3: then the experience that you had, the experience that you have,
• 17:16
  Speaker 3: it's going to.
• 17:16
Speaker 4: Be worth somebody hearing, you know what I'm saying?
• 17:20
Speaker 3: So when you get done, whenever that is, Your story
• 17:25
Speaker 3: is going to be helpful to somebody, and you'll need
• 17:29
Speaker 3: to tell that story maybe more times than what you think.
• 17:33
Speaker 3: So make sure that you keep it documented. Make sure
• 17:37
Speaker 3: that you are fully aware of who you were, what
• 17:40
Speaker 3: you were thinking, what you wanted to do, how you
• 17:42
Speaker 3: wanted to do it, how it played out. Because you're
• 17:46
Speaker 3: going to need that. You're going to need that because
• 17:48
Speaker 3: you're going to have– you'll end up helping somebody more
• 17:51
Speaker 3: so than what you think right now.
• 17:55
Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yeah, man.
• 17:57
Speaker 5: Well, we appreciate you guys coming through. And tell them
• 18:00
Speaker 5: one more time the game, time, all that. Give them
• 18:03
  Speaker 5: the rundown.
• 18:05
  Speaker 8: It's Friday, 7.30 p.m.
• 18:08
Speaker 4: Against Parkersburg South at the Roohoo. There you go.
• 18:11
  Speaker 2: I love it.
• 18:11
Speaker 4: Pop out and see it. Pop out and see it.
• 18:13
Speaker 4: Pop out and see it.
• 18:14
Speaker 7: It's going to be a show.
• 18:16
  Speaker 3: Yo, yo, I guess we didn't have enough. I didn't
• 18:22
Speaker 3: see too much of this color already coming out.
• 18:24
  Speaker 7: So, all right.
• 18:25
Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll be right back. We're going

• 19:53
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen.
• 19:55
Speaker 3: Hollis, I appreciate you having those young men come in.
• 19:57
Speaker 3: It was a good chance to have a conversation.
• 20:01
  Speaker 4: With them, man.
• 20:01
Speaker 5: And I know we did that in the past a lot,
• 20:03
Speaker 5: talking about how we've kind of gotten away from that
• 20:05
Speaker 5: a little bit, but maybe that's something we need to
• 20:07
Speaker 5: you know, start doing again because it's always good to
• 20:09
Speaker 5: have the local guys and just, you know, their energies.
• 20:12
Speaker 5: I love their answers. You could tell they prepped. You
• 20:15
Speaker 5: know what I'm saying? I would have been coming here
• 20:17
Speaker 5: at that age with a bunch of ahs.
• 20:19
Speaker 3: Well, and to that, they're able, as nervous as they were,
• 20:24
Speaker 3: you couldn't even tell it like in the answers. You know,
• 20:27
Speaker 3: they answered it straightforward and, you know, and back in
• 20:32
Speaker 3: the day, man, like you said, stuttering and everything.
• 20:36
Speaker 4: You didn't have no sort of prep.
• 20:38
Speaker 5: So one other thing I wanted to talk about, and again,
• 20:41
Speaker 5: we don't talk about soccer on this show a lot,
• 20:44
Speaker 5: but there was a story from one of the, and again,
• 20:46
Speaker 5: forgive me, I don't know if it's the Premier League,
• 20:48
Speaker 5: it's one of the soccer leagues in Europe. And essentially
• 20:52
Speaker 5: what they do is that in addition to like sort
• 20:55
Speaker 5: of the regular season, they'll have like these tournaments. You
• 20:58
Speaker 5: know how like the NBA has like the NBA Cups,
• 20:59
Speaker 5: so they'll have these like Cups and different tournaments organized
• 21:03
Speaker 5: within the league or within the season. And within those cups,
• 21:09
Speaker 5: they'll have a wide range of teams. So to put
• 21:11
Speaker 5: it in context, American context, like, for example, it'd be like,
• 21:15
Speaker 5: you know, the Cincinnati Reds at the MLB level, and
• 21:18
Speaker 5: they would play against the power here locally. So the
• 21:21
Speaker 5: AAA and single-A major league teams would play... Well, yeah,
• 21:24
Speaker 5: I guess in effect. They would play... They could play
• 21:27
Speaker 5: the major league teams. They could play teams within the
• 21:29
Speaker 5: division and all that. So there was a team... And
• 21:33
Speaker 5: forgive me, I don't know the team's name, but they
• 21:35
Speaker 5: played the Arsenal. So this would be a team, and
• 21:38
Speaker 5: just to put it in further context, this team's payroll
• 21:42
Speaker 5: was about $ 3 million total. And the Arsenal's payroll is over,
• 21:47
Speaker 5: I think, a couple billion dollars. So that tells you
• 21:50
Speaker 5: the disparity in the levels in which they're at, right?
• 21:54
Speaker 5: So you're talking about internationally well-known players playing against essentially
• 21:59
Speaker 5: unknown local guys, in effect. And this team... This little
• 22:03
Speaker 5: farm team beat the big boys. So it'll be, again,
• 22:06
Speaker 5: like the power playing against the Cincinnati Reds and winning
• 22:10
  Speaker 5: that game.
• 22:10
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 22:12
Speaker 5: And we talked about this briefly on the show in
• 22:15
Speaker 5: times past. Do you think some– because we kind of
• 22:19
Speaker 5: have that with March Madness. where you have like the
• 22:22
Speaker 5: lower level division one teams playing against, you know, the
• 22:25
Speaker 5: Dukes and the Kansas and everything like that. But do
• 22:27
Speaker 5: you think something like that could work in a, in a, in,
• 22:30
Speaker 5: in like baseball or the NBA G league guys playing
• 22:35
Speaker 5: against the NBA? Do you think something like that could
• 22:37
Speaker 5: work in American sports?
• 22:39
Speaker 4: Um, I'm afraid to say football and basketball.
• 22:46
Speaker 3: And, and the reason why I would, I'm afraid to
• 22:49
Speaker 3: say like basketball, um, Because I think the talent level
• 22:53
Speaker 3: and the experience that NBA-type guys have over college or
• 23:02
Speaker 3: anybody in between is just unbelievable.
• 23:07
Speaker 4: And I think the same thing with football. Well, football's impossible.
• 23:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, because the physicality is going to be the thing.
• 23:15
Speaker 3: But if we just talk basketball.
• 23:21
Speaker 3: I think that the skill set doesn't have to be
• 23:24
  Speaker 3: that far apart.
• 23:26
Speaker 4: Like, there's also that younger thing. Yeah.
• 23:32
Speaker 3: You know, up and down the court. Can they get
• 23:35
Speaker 3: up and down the court? Yeah, that could be good
• 23:36
Speaker 3: or bad, I guess. That could be a good or
• 23:38
  Speaker 3: bad thing.
• 23:39
Speaker 5: Because I think about it in terms of, like, for example,
• 23:42
Speaker 5: I'm just saying just like college basketball, you know, and
• 23:46
Speaker 5: obviously college basketball is about to start. So they got
• 23:50
Speaker 5: some preseason stuff. So in about probably the next week,
• 23:53
Speaker 5: the season will start. And we know generally from like,
• 23:56
Speaker 5: you know, November to January, you know, it ain't really
• 24:00
Speaker 5: too much going on as far. They'll play like some tournaments.
• 24:02
Speaker 5: They'll have like the Maui Invitational. They'll have some other stuff.
• 24:05
Speaker 5: So what if there was a situation in which we'll
• 24:08
Speaker 5: just say, hey, we're going to lump everybody together. We're
• 24:10
Speaker 5: going to get some D3s. We're going to get some NIAs.
• 24:12
Speaker 5: We're going to get some Division IIs, some Division I's.
• 24:16
Speaker 5: We're going to throw y'all in. Just throw everybody in.
• 24:18
Speaker 5: And then from November to January, until y'all get into
• 24:22
Speaker 5: conference play, we're going to do just a big old
• 24:24
Speaker 5: tournament cup and just see who comes out of it.
• 24:28
Speaker 4: Do you think people will watch it? Yes, I do.
• 24:31
Speaker 3: I think to whatever level that you're at, let's just say,
• 24:36
Speaker 3: you know, whether it be Marshall or WVU or West
• 24:40
Speaker 3: Virginia State, You see, like, that fan base is going
• 24:44
  Speaker 3: to go crazy.
• 24:45
Speaker 4: They're going to go crazy. They're going to go crazy.
• 24:47
Speaker 3: And especially don't let one of those teams, even if
• 24:51
Speaker 3: they get stuck, and I'll say stuck, with a legitimate
• 24:57
Speaker 3: top team, you want to see.
• 25:00
Speaker 4: You want to see. And I think I personally, again,
• 25:03
Speaker 4: it'll never work in football. It just wouldn't.
• 25:06
  Speaker 5: But I think, like, a baseball, a basketball, possibly a
• 25:09
Speaker 5: soccer team, But I think basketball would be interesting. And
• 25:13
Speaker 5: I think, man, you would have some small, lower-level teams
• 25:17
Speaker 5: pull off maybe a victory or two.
• 25:20
Speaker 3: I think that possibly could happen because now you're talking
• 25:25
Speaker 3: about getting up and down the court.
• 25:27
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 25:27
Speaker 3: You're talking about shots. Is there a belief that... Can
• 25:35
Speaker 3: the older guy, older team, let's just say the youngest
• 25:40
Speaker 3: guy on the team could be, let's say, 35.
• 25:44
  Speaker 7: Wow.
• 25:45
  Speaker 4: Okay?
• 25:46
Speaker 3: And now your oldest guy for the college team might
• 25:52
  Speaker 3: be 22.
• 25:56
Speaker 4: Can they run them to death? Can they get up
• 25:59
Speaker 4: and down the court enough, fast enough? It's possible. I mean,
• 26:03
Speaker 4: that would be interesting, man.
• 26:04
Speaker 5: I just think, I think that sort of style, I
• 26:08
Speaker 5: can see why like a European, I can see the
• 26:11
Speaker 5: interest in that. And I think that, you know, we
• 26:14
Speaker 5: talk about, you know, viewership and different, again, now, NIL
• 26:19
Speaker 5: sort of changes things, but I think it would be,
• 26:21
Speaker 5: I don't know, I just think it would be interesting
• 26:22
Speaker 5: if we did something like that, particularly like in the
• 26:24
Speaker 5: preseason when nobody's watching. But I want to talk about
• 26:28
Speaker 5: basketball really really quick um because i want to bring
• 26:36
Speaker 5: you this schedule so mississippi valley state so this is
• 26:39
Speaker 5: the hbcu in mississippi so this is their off excuse
• 26:45
Speaker 5: me that they're out of conference schedule now we know
• 26:48
Speaker 5: similar to football you have money games and those money
• 26:51
Speaker 5: games you generally plan against um you know uh teams
• 26:55
Speaker 5: from getting paid to essentially lose.
• 26:58
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 26:59
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 26:59
Speaker 4: Beat up to get beat, to get beat up. Yeah.
• 27:01
Speaker 4: So that's it. And I lost it. All right.
• 27:03
Speaker 5: So this is the out of conference schedule. And I
• 27:06
Speaker 5: want to preface this by saying, these are our way games.
• 27:09
Speaker 5: And again, this is Mississippi Valley state in Mississippi. They
• 27:13
Speaker 5: go to Oklahoma. They go to Washington state. They go
• 27:18
Speaker 5: to Oregon. Then Oregon state. The number 12, Kansas. Then
• 27:24
  Speaker 5: New Mexico.
• 27:24
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 27:25
Speaker 5: Then go to Michigan. Then back to North Texas. Then
• 27:29
Speaker 5: back to UConn. Then Mississippi State. That's near the crib.
• 27:34
Speaker 5: Near Tulane. That's next door. Then Ohio State. Then Texas Tech.
• 27:40
Speaker 5: Then back to Baylor. Then back to Alabama State. Then
• 27:45
Speaker 5: they go into conference play. They can play Alabama State
• 27:48
Speaker 5: and Alabama A & M and all of them.
• 27:49
Speaker 7: Does this school just give free tuition to everybody? Every
• 27:53
Speaker 7: one of those is like million-dollar money games.
• 27:55
  Speaker 4: Brutal.
• 27:58
Speaker 5: Again, so I would imagine, to Matt's point, they're getting
• 28:02
Speaker 5: paid for each of these games. So it's probably maybe
• 28:04
Speaker 5: a couple hundred grand up to a million. Is it
• 28:07
Speaker 5: worth it to do that? This is the men's basketball
• 28:10
Speaker 5: team Mississippi Valley State schedule.
• 28:11
Speaker 4: Is it worth it?
• 28:13
Speaker 3: I'm going to say hesitantly, I'm going to say yes,
• 28:17
Speaker 3: because I'm thinking the only reason I could find a
• 28:20
Speaker 3: way to justify that being the case is we as
• 28:25
Speaker 3: the administration, coaches, and all that, we need money into
• 28:31
  Speaker 3: the system.
• 28:32
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 28:33
Speaker 3: So let's go get it at some point in time.
• 28:38
Speaker 4: Let's go get it.
• 28:39
Speaker 3: Let's sacrifice this particular season. We'll have them at a conference.
• 28:43
Speaker 3: It ain't the whole season. Yes, but I'm just saying.
• 28:48
Speaker 3: It might be the season now that you say that.
• 28:50
Speaker 3: It could be the season.
• 28:51
Speaker 4: Because, I mean, when you get beat up like that,
• 28:53
Speaker 4: like where is the confidence?
• 28:55
Speaker 3: Now, unless you're saying after every game, we didn't expect
• 28:59
Speaker 3: to win this game.
• 29:01
Speaker 4: You got to remember, we're building confidence. The program. But
• 29:04
Speaker 4: you're not going to tell the boys that. You ain't
• 29:06
Speaker 4: going to tell the boys that.
• 29:10
Speaker 3: How are you going to have that schedule and not
• 29:12
Speaker 3: let me know what I'm in for?
• 29:16
Speaker 7: You got to be eating filet mignon for the team
• 29:20
Speaker 7: meal every team meal after that.
• 29:22
Speaker 5: Because again, and again, these rankings can change. But let's
• 29:26
Speaker 5: see who they play in this preseason ranking.
• 29:29
Speaker 4: So this is based off last year.
• 29:31
Speaker 5: They played number 12 Kansas, excuse me, Arkansas, which they
• 29:36
Speaker 5: got my guy, what's my guy's name, the coach there,
• 29:38
Speaker 5: played the coach of Kentucky. I can't think of his name. Anyway,
• 29:42
Speaker 5: they got number 12, Arkansas. They play number 16, Michigan.
• 29:48
Speaker 5: They played number four UConn. They just won a couple
• 29:51
Speaker 5: championships in the last few years. And number 19 Texas Tech.
• 29:56
Speaker 5: This is a small, small– I think I want to say, yeah,
• 30:00
Speaker 5: this is a small Division I.
• 30:01
Speaker 4: They play in the SWAC.
• 30:03
Speaker 5: So this is a school that they normally– you know,
• 30:06
  Speaker 5: they're playing like Grambling in Alabama A & M. But
• 30:09
Speaker 5: I guess the question I have, and Matt, you can
• 30:12
Speaker 5: chime in, please. If you're going to play that many
• 30:15
Speaker 5: money games– At what point or at what level do
• 30:20
Speaker 5: you compensate those players?
• 30:22
  Speaker 4: So we're saying.
• 30:25
Speaker 5: You got to do this for the school because, again,
• 30:27
Speaker 5: that money just don't stay with the basketball program. So
• 30:31
Speaker 5: I'm sure they get maybe a nice cut out of it,
• 30:34
Speaker 5: but some of that money is probably going to be
• 30:35
Speaker 5: dispensed throughout the athletic department, right? I would say some
• 30:41
Speaker 5: of it. Maybe not all of it, but some of it.
• 30:43
Speaker 5: Then you still got to cover expenses as far as travel,
• 30:46
Speaker 5: which basketball is not like football. So you got a
• 30:48
Speaker 5: bag and a plane, you go. But at what point
• 30:51
Speaker 5: or what level should the boys be compensated? Should they
• 30:56
Speaker 5: get an extra check? Should they get, like you said,
• 30:58
Speaker 5: the filet mignon or something?
• 31:02
Speaker 3: I think that there needs to be something set. And
• 31:08
Speaker 3: let's just say at the end of the season, each
• 31:11
Speaker 3: player is going to get this. Based off because you
• 31:15
Speaker 3: played all because we because we played all these games
• 31:18
Speaker 3: and especially the senior who is basically sacrificing his senior year.
• 31:24
Speaker 4: I even think of it like that, you know, to.
• 31:27
Speaker 3: To to to attack all these teams and lose and
• 31:31
Speaker 3: knowing that you're going to lose even before you get there.
• 31:36
Speaker 3: You got to justify that to me some kind of way.
• 31:38
Speaker 3: I'm going to watch these games.
• 31:40
Speaker 7: Do they do this every year?
• 31:42
Speaker 4: No, not– I mean, again, maybe it's just something we
• 31:44
Speaker 4: haven't paid to before. Yeah, yeah.
• 31:46
Speaker 5: You know, because, again, we always think of it in
• 31:48
Speaker 5: football where you have like one or two little money games.
• 31:51
Speaker 5: We don't necessarily think about that in basketball, you know,
• 31:54
Speaker 5: in terms of this. And I'm sure there's always, you know,
• 31:57
Speaker 5: state of play, Marshall sometimes and different things like that.
• 32:00
Speaker 5: But you're not doing– this is extreme because not only
• 32:03
Speaker 5: are they playing all these good teams and higher level teams,
• 32:06
Speaker 5: They're traveling. So they're literally going from one side of
• 32:09
Speaker 5: the country to the next. They're literally going from Washington
• 32:13
Speaker 5: State to UConn to Ohio State to Texas. Ohio State
• 32:18
Speaker 5: to Texas, that's a trip, man.
• 32:19
Speaker 4: That's crazy. You know what I mean?
• 32:21
Speaker 7: I mean, because you get basically, what, a month and
• 32:24
Speaker 7: a half of out-of-conference play in basketball before you start.
• 32:27
Speaker 7: I mean, it's like late December before you start your
• 32:29
Speaker 7: conference play. Yeah. I mean, this could be a good
• 32:34
Speaker 7: recipe on how to kind of sort of shortchange the
• 32:38
Speaker 7: NIL situation. If you're a smaller school, you know you
• 32:42
Speaker 7: need money to get good players. I mean, this could
• 32:46
Speaker 7: be a good way to do it. I mean, you're
• 32:49
Speaker 7: going to recruit somebody and say, look, we're going to
• 32:51
Speaker 7: play a lot of these big-time Division I teams, and
• 32:54
Speaker 7: it may not be easy.
• 32:55
  Speaker 4: That's a good point.
• 32:56
Speaker 7: But you're going to get paid if you come here
• 32:58
  Speaker 7: and do it.
• 32:59
Speaker 5: And again, and this is for two months. So this
• 33:02
Speaker 5: schedule starts November 6th. And that last out-of-conference game against
• 33:07
Speaker 5: Baylor is December 29th.
• 33:09
  Speaker 2: Wow.
• 33:10
Speaker 4: So this is about 60 days of getting them hands. Yeah, yeah.
• 33:16
Speaker 3: And now, okay, so here's another question. And I thought
• 33:20
Speaker 3: of it as Matt was talking.
• 33:21
  Speaker 9: So.
• 33:26
Speaker 3: To the fact that we're going to get money for NIL,
• 33:30
Speaker 3: and we're going to bring some legitimate players in.
• 33:34
Speaker 4: Possibly. Possibly. With that money?
• 33:40
Speaker 3: And let's say you're out there somewhere, but I'm putting
• 33:43
Speaker 3: some money in front of you to get you to
• 33:45
Speaker 3: my– See, my problem is I don't think it's all.
• 33:48
Speaker 4: Going to go in-house. If it was in-house, I think
• 33:51
Speaker 4: it would be truly okay. Yeah. But I don't think
• 33:55
Speaker 4: it's going to be. Oh, it ain't going to be in-house.
• 33:56
Speaker 3: It's not going to be all in-house. It's going to
• 33:59
Speaker 3: be to get other players from other places. And when
• 34:03
Speaker 3: you do that, somebody got to go. Somebody got to go.
• 34:08
Speaker 4: I ain't think about it like that, but, I mean,
• 34:09
  Speaker 4: you're right, man.
• 34:10
Speaker 5: It's– To your point, I think what you're trying to
• 34:14
Speaker 5: say is basically we're going to do all this, we're
• 34:16
Speaker 5: going to play all these games for you to pay
• 34:18
  Speaker 5: somebody else.
• 34:19
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 34:21
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 34:21
Speaker 7: I'm curious about this, so I did a little bit
• 34:23
Speaker 7: of search here. So, like, for some of these buy-in
• 34:26
Speaker 7: games that they call them, like Nebraska, for example, they
• 34:30
Speaker 7: pay out $ 300, 000 for a game like that. Kentucky to
• 34:36
Speaker 7: Georgia Tech is like $ 150, 000 for a game. San Jose
• 34:38
  Speaker 7: State is like $ 180, 000. I mean, they're all pretty much
• 34:44
Speaker 7: like six figures, five, six figures.
• 34:47
Speaker 5: And see, to that point, and again, if we're talking
• 34:51
Speaker 5: about playing two months worth of games, so this would
• 34:54
Speaker 5: probably be rack up. You could probably rack up a
• 34:56
Speaker 5: couple million is probably what they're going to get, right?
• 34:58
Speaker 5: But this is why I say there needs to be
• 35:02
Speaker 5: a– when we talk about the Save College Sports Act,
• 35:05
Speaker 5: I talked about it earlier this week, there needs to
• 35:07
Speaker 5: be a revenue-sharing model built within it. So you don't
• 35:11
Speaker 5: have to do this because, again, this may work for
• 35:14
Speaker 5: basketball because, again, you're going to get beat up, but
• 35:17
Speaker 5: it's not like football where.
• 35:19
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 35:19
  Speaker 4: Physical. Yeah.
• 35:20
Speaker 5: If you take two or three money games, bro, you
• 35:22
Speaker 5: to your point, coach, you might be done for the season.
• 35:25
Speaker 5: You might get guys hurt. This might just be demoralized.
• 35:28
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 35:28
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 35:29
Speaker 5: So I think within that, although, you know, those are
• 35:32
Speaker 5: some pretty nice paydays and again to travel with basketball.
• 35:35
  Speaker 5: If you're getting a $ 300, 000 check, your travel may be
• 35:38
Speaker 5: only 20, 30 grand with basketball because it's not football
• 35:41
Speaker 5: and the guy's just got a bag and you can
• 35:43
Speaker 5: just go. So it could be some nice paydays. And
• 35:46
Speaker 5: I think to the further point, if you're going to
• 35:49
Speaker 5: do this to me, you got to figure out a
• 35:50
Speaker 5: way to keep it in-house, pay those guys, make sure
• 35:53
Speaker 5: they get a cut of that, and to figure out
• 35:56
Speaker 5: how you can keep as much money as possible within
• 35:58
  Speaker 5: the basketball program.
• 35:59
Speaker 3: Okay, so, and I think the challenge to that is,
• 36:04
Speaker 3: So let's say we got 15 players on the roster.
• 36:09
Speaker 3: Five of those, let's say seven of those, eight of
• 36:12
Speaker 3: those are guys that are getting money, that are getting
• 36:17
Speaker 3: legitimate money because they're starters, blah, blah, blah, blah.
• 36:20
Speaker 5: And they're in Mississippi Valley, so ain't nobody getting no
• 36:22
Speaker 5: legitimate money. Right. But they're getting some.
• 36:24
  Speaker 4: A little taste.
• 36:25
  Speaker 9: Right.
• 36:27
Speaker 3: And all of a sudden, though, you get in your
• 36:30
Speaker 3: hands this amount of money, You're not going to try
• 36:36
Speaker 3: to replace the backup guy.
• 36:40
Speaker 4: What you're going to do is you're going.
• 36:41
Speaker 3: To turn me as the starter into the backup guy
• 36:45
Speaker 3: and bring you in and pay you.
• 36:48
  Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean, that's a good point. But I
• 36:52
Speaker 5: think a trip like this, if we're going to say
• 36:54
Speaker 5: we're going to get beat up for two months, I
• 36:55
Speaker 5: think your first obligation, you got to just go ahead
• 36:57
Speaker 5: and break those guys off. The guys on the team
• 36:59
Speaker 5: got to get paid first. And then, you know, obviously
• 37:02
Speaker 5: you got to set yourself up for the future as well. Okay,
• 37:04
Speaker 5: so when you say, okay, so we play these games.
• 37:10
Speaker 5: You're going to cut me a check.
• 37:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, something. Okay, so you can't cut me a check
• 37:15
Speaker 4: to break even because.
• 37:19
Speaker 5: That defeats the purpose. That defeats the whole purpose. I
• 37:21
Speaker 5: ain't saying, like, you're going to get paid a lot. Again,
• 37:24
Speaker 5: I'm just saying you got to get something out of this.
• 37:26
Speaker 5: I don't think it's fair for you to, like you said,
• 37:31
Speaker 5: get all this money to not only, you know, help
• 37:34
Speaker 5: support the athletic department as a whole, but help support
• 37:38
Speaker 5: the future basketball team, which I as an eighth or
• 37:41
Speaker 5: tenth guy on the bench may not even be a
• 37:44
Speaker 5: part of, for real. So it's like I got to
• 37:46
Speaker 5: get something in my hands now to justify this. And then,
• 37:50
Speaker 5: you know, although just something. It ain't got to be
• 37:52
Speaker 5: a whole lot, but you got to get those guys
• 37:54
Speaker 5: something for this, for this two months.
• 37:56
Speaker 3: So let's just say that, okay, so they pay you
• 37:59
Speaker 3: because you're one of the main guys.
• 38:00
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 38:01
Speaker 3: And... Now they're looking at me and they're saying, well, okay,
• 38:06
Speaker 3: he got off the bench a few times and played
• 38:07
  Speaker 3: a little bit.
• 38:09
Speaker 5: What do we really want to give him? I don't
• 38:10
Speaker 5: think it works. I think it's just like it's got
• 38:12
Speaker 5: to be we're going to give you guys this. And
• 38:16
Speaker 5: I think everybody got to get something.
• 38:20
Speaker 3: I don't think that the sports system can ever be
• 38:25
Speaker 3: structured or will ever think about structuring it in a
• 38:29
Speaker 3: manner in which you got this much, so we're going
• 38:32
Speaker 3: to give you that much. I don't think it's ever
• 38:34
Speaker 3: going to– I think if they can save money and
• 38:37
Speaker 3: give me two and give you 20, they're fine.
• 38:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, but that ain't– I mean, that's just not equitable.
• 38:44
Speaker 5: Not with that schedule. Because, again, if I'm the eighth,
• 38:47
Speaker 5: tenth guy on the bench, hell, I still got to travel.
• 38:50
Speaker 5: I got to get up and I'm going to play
• 38:51
Speaker 5: because we're going to get beat up.
• 38:53
Speaker 3: But that's across the board. That's in any sport at
• 38:58
  Speaker 3: any given time.
• 38:59
Speaker 5: I understand that, but I'm just talking about in this
• 39:01
  Speaker 5: particular situation.
• 39:03
Speaker 4: Okay. So you're basically sacrificing us.
• 39:07
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 39:07
Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
• 39:08
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 39:08
  Speaker 4: I think so.
• 39:09
Speaker 3: And I think there still has to be a justifiable
• 39:14
Speaker 3: reason for For me to look down at the players who, quote,
• 39:19
Speaker 3: might not play that much and drop them something that
• 39:22
Speaker 3: is something that's going to make them happy, not just
• 39:27
  Speaker 3: something just so.
• 39:27
Speaker 4: They can go away. I'm just saying... I got you.
• 39:31
Speaker 4: If you give me, you got $ 200, 000.
• 39:34
  Speaker 3: They give me $ 10, 000.
• 39:38
Speaker 7: I got some numbers for you here. This is reported
• 39:44
Speaker 7: by a website called The Sideline. Mississippi Valley State By sports,
• 39:51
Speaker 7: football gets $ 1. 8 million. That gets 51% of the money
• 39:55
Speaker 7: down there. Men's basketball, $ 750, 000. So looking at individual players here,
• 40:00
Speaker 7: let's see here. There's 12 players listed. The highest is
• 40:05
  Speaker 7: paid $ 72, 000. The lowest is $ 52, 000.
• 40:06
  Speaker 9: Hey.
• 40:10
Speaker 7: So everybody's making at least $ 50, 000, and the highest is
• 40:12
  Speaker 7: about $ 20, 000 higher.
• 40:14
  Speaker 4: And again... And that's a good window. And that's a
• 40:17
  Speaker 4: good window.
• 40:18
Speaker 5: But I also think, on top of what you're paying
• 40:21
Speaker 5: with that, if you're going to do this to me
• 40:23
Speaker 5: for two months, I need a little extra. That's all
• 40:27
Speaker 5: I'm saying. If you're going to do this to me
• 40:29
Speaker 5: for two months, I need just a little bit extra.
• 40:32
Speaker 5: We got to put a cherry on top of that.
• 40:34
Speaker 5: But let's move on. I know we're about.
• 40:36
  Speaker 7: To go, but....
• 40:39
  Speaker 4: Deion.
• 40:41
Speaker 7: Talk about got to go.
• 40:42
Speaker 5: He's at Colorado this season, last season, essentially every season
• 40:49
Speaker 5: without Shador and Travis Hunter. It's been terrible. He don't
• 40:55
Speaker 5: know who to play at quarterback.
• 40:59
  Speaker 4: There was a.
• 41:00
Speaker 5: Report today about him kind of just being almost disrespectful
• 41:04
Speaker 5: to the history of Colorado football. Even last year when
• 41:09
Speaker 5: he put his son's jersey in the rafters and didn't
• 41:13
Speaker 5: retire other players who should have maybe been in front
• 41:15
Speaker 5: of him as far as Colorado football history. You know,
• 41:18
Speaker 5: is this a situation in which, you know, is Deion
• 41:23
Speaker 5: worth it anymore? Or is it just time to go
• 41:25
Speaker 5: at this point? It's definitely time to go.
• 41:28
Speaker 3: And the problem when you start talking about Deion is
• 41:36
Speaker 3: his expectation– from the sidelines, from the fans, from the money,
• 41:43
Speaker 3: from this and this and this. His expectation is, you're
• 41:47
Speaker 3: going to give me what I need and what I
• 41:49
Speaker 3: want because I'm this guy. And when you get into
• 41:54
Speaker 3: the system, the system doesn't, The system does not identify
• 41:58
Speaker 3: you as the guy.
• 42:00
Speaker 5: That's a heck of a way to put it, bro.
• 42:02
Speaker 5: That is a heck of a way to put it.
• 42:05
Speaker 5: It does not look at you and say, oh, that's
• 42:07
  Speaker 5: the dude.
• 42:08
  Speaker 4: I never thought about that. I mean, that's a life
• 42:11
Speaker 4: lesson right there. It doesn't look at you and say, oh,
• 42:15
Speaker 4: it's Deion. We got to do more for him. No,
• 42:17
Speaker 4: we don't. No, we don't. You know what you are?
• 42:22
Speaker 4: You are a coach. Until you prove it. You're a coach.
• 42:26
  Speaker 4: You're a head coach.
• 42:27
Speaker 3: And the head coach is in this window, and you
• 42:29
Speaker 3: don't get to get out of the side of that
• 42:30
Speaker 3: window because you Deion, because you play football.
• 42:34
Speaker 4: Go back and play pro. Go back and play pro football.
• 42:37
Speaker 4: If that's what you want, you want that kind of money,
• 42:40
Speaker 4: you want that kind of respect, go play. Yeah, man.
• 42:42
Speaker 5: I just think it's one of them situations in which,
• 42:45
Speaker 5: you know, it was a lot of hype.
• 42:47
Speaker 4: The rappers ain't on the sidelines no more.
• 42:50
Speaker 5: Ain't nobody coming to, you know, it's not little Gilly
• 42:52
Speaker 5: and little Wayne going to Colorado to check out the games.
• 42:57
Speaker 5: And it's just one of them situations where I think,
• 42:59
Speaker 5: you know, you came in with a talent pool. And
• 43:02
Speaker 5: now you ain't got the talent pool, and it's hard
• 43:04
Speaker 5: to recruit at Colorado. You don't have the money. Nobody's
• 43:08
Speaker 5: coming because it's you? Yeah, nobody's coming because it's you
• 43:10
Speaker 5: no more. And now, to your point, you a coach now.
• 43:14
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 43:14
Speaker 4: And that's it. And not a winning one.
• 43:18
Speaker 3: And look, I've been through that whole structure. And until
• 43:25
Speaker 3: you realize, like, you can say you think you can coach,
• 43:29
Speaker 3: and you might think you can coach.
• 43:33
Speaker 4: Coaching doesn't show up unless the numbers show up. Yeah.
• 43:36
Speaker 5: And I think, too, I know at my time coaching,
• 43:40
Speaker 5: one thing that I had to learn fast is that
• 43:43
Speaker 5: I had to learn how little I knew. Even, you know,
• 43:46
Speaker 5: I was, again, I just coached high school, middle school.
• 43:49
Speaker 5: And even though I had played at the collegiate level,
• 43:52
Speaker 5: I think, you know, I had to go back. It
• 43:54
Speaker 5: was so much I had to learn, not only just
• 43:56
Speaker 5: about X's and O's, But I had to learn to
• 43:59
  Speaker 5: manage personalities.
• 44:00
  Speaker 7: Yep.
• 44:00
  Speaker 4: And that's tough.
• 44:02
Speaker 5: And I had to learn to control my personality and
• 44:05
Speaker 5: to control my emotions and to communicate effectively. And to
• 44:08
Speaker 5: your point, as we were just talking about with the
• 44:10
Speaker 5: young men, you know, each generation is different and how
• 44:15
Speaker 5: they communicate is different maybe than the generation that you
• 44:17
Speaker 5: grew up in. So it's so much to coach and Again,
• 44:21
Speaker 5: inside the X's and O's and outside of the X's
• 44:24
Speaker 5: and O's. And not to mention, if you are a
• 44:26
Speaker 5: head coach, part of your duties and responsibility is to
• 44:30
Speaker 5: be a figurehead for the program. So that means you
• 44:32
Speaker 5: got to go out and do the speaking engagements. You
• 44:34
Speaker 5: got to raise the money. You got to snob with
• 44:37
Speaker 5: the alumni. You got to do all that.
• 44:39
Speaker 4: Yeah. And sometimes you.
• 44:41
Speaker 3: You didn't have anything to do with the offense other
• 44:45
Speaker 3: than you telling me this is what you're going to
• 44:47
  Speaker 3: try to do.
• 44:48
Speaker 4: And I say, okay, we can roll with that. You know,
• 44:51
  Speaker 4: try it out.
• 44:54
Speaker 3: At the end of the day, you're blamed for everything.
• 44:58
Speaker 3: And I'm not saying.
• 44:59
Speaker 4: That that's wrong. It is right. Because if you choose
• 45:02
Speaker 4: to be the head, then you choose to get your
• 45:05
  Speaker 4: head cut off.
• 45:07
Speaker 7: Well, don't you also need to learn– at a certain point,
• 45:10
Speaker 7: you just got to learn when to shut up. Yeah.
• 45:12
Speaker 4: I mean, it's like when you're big time and.
• 45:14
Speaker 7: You got all the talent pool around you, great. Get
• 45:17
Speaker 7: out in the media. Hey, look how good we are.
• 45:19
Speaker 7: And then if you got a bad year, just go
• 45:22
Speaker 7: back to your office because you're just drawing attention to yourself.
• 45:25
Speaker 4: Yes, and I think that's a hard thing for Deion.
• 45:28
Speaker 3: One, because he can't pass up the media because he
• 45:32
Speaker 3: feels like there's something he can say that's going to be, quote,
• 45:35
Speaker 3: maybe meaningful, funny, funny.
• 45:38
  Speaker 4: Whatever.
• 45:39
Speaker 3: But at this point in time, I don't think that
• 45:43
Speaker 3: the media is on his positive side. And now you
• 45:47
Speaker 3: can't run. Now you can't run. You got to keep
• 45:51
Speaker 3: showing up like you were showing up before.
• 45:53
Speaker 4: And it may just be a reality sitting.
• 45:54
Speaker 5: And again, I think also for somebody like Deion, it
• 45:57
Speaker 5: may be hard to say, hey, man, I might have
• 46:00
Speaker 5: to go to these coaching clinics and learn. I might
• 46:02
Speaker 5: have to go sit up under this coach. I might
• 46:05
Speaker 5: have to go to this coach and really sit down
• 46:07
Speaker 5: with him for a week and really learn and really
• 46:10
Speaker 5: sit down and soak all that game up. It may
• 46:12
Speaker 5: be hard for him to humble himself to that degree.
• 46:15
Speaker 5: Can you go and just be the DB coach?
• 46:19
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 46:19
Speaker 3: And teach the DBs some of the things that you
• 46:22
Speaker 3: used to do based off of what the system's going
• 46:25
Speaker 3: to be because you don't get to pick.
• 46:26
  Speaker 4: The system now.
• 46:27
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 46:28
Speaker 4: So now, you play man-to-man, they're playing zone. Can you
• 46:31
Speaker 4: teach the zone? Yeah.
• 46:33
Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's another part of coaching, too, is just
• 46:35
Speaker 5: being a flat-out teacher. If you ever look at, like,
• 46:37
Speaker 5: those Nick Saban documentaries, and he has a show out now,
• 46:40
Speaker 5: he was so detailed. I mean, it was just minute details.
• 46:43
Speaker 5: I mean, to just, to the way you, you know,
• 46:46
Speaker 5: wearing your socks to the size of the grass, and
• 46:49
Speaker 5: it was just, everything was just down to the millimeter. Yeah.
• 46:53
Speaker 4: And I think that's what it is.
• 46:55
  Speaker 7: And again.
• 46:57
Speaker 5: For somebody like Deion, who's probably a little bit more
• 47:00
Speaker 5: big picture, coaching can be difficult because it's all about
• 47:05
Speaker 5: those little minor details.
• 47:08
  Speaker 4: You're right.
• 47:08
Speaker 3: And all that he's looking at is at the end result.
• 47:12
Speaker 3: His expectation is the end result of winning. And winning
• 47:16
Speaker 3: not only because of my team. but winning because it's me,
• 47:20
  Speaker 3: it's Deion. I'm the guy who's here and we're going
• 47:23
Speaker 3: to win. If I'm here, we're going to win. And
• 47:26
Speaker 3: I could see that being part of the meeting with
• 47:28
Speaker 3: the players. And when you ain't winning, that don't work.
• 47:35
Speaker 7: I'm curious what both of you think on this. Do
• 47:37
Speaker 7: you think the media is tougher on college coaches than professional?
• 47:42
Speaker 7: The reason I ask, Bill Belichick, I mean, dude, won
• 47:47
Speaker 7: how many Super Bowls when he was at New England?
• 47:49
Speaker 7: I feel like the media doesn't give two you-know-whats about
• 47:53
Speaker 7: him now that he's coaching college. It's like, oh, Super Bowls, whatever.
• 47:56
  Speaker 7: Your team sucks.
• 47:58
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 47:58
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 47:59
  Speaker 4: I'll say this.
• 48:00
Speaker 3: I think if you're coaching in the professional ranks, nobody's there.
• 48:07
Speaker 3: The only person, the only media that's really worried about
• 48:10
Speaker 3: that is the media that's in that city or state.
• 48:13
  Speaker 4: Okay, yeah.
• 48:15
Speaker 3: But the Nationals all over the collegiate level. No matter
• 48:21
Speaker 3: what team you're on, no matter what coach you're coaching
• 48:24
Speaker 3: anywhere in the country, the media is going to be
• 48:28
Speaker 3: on you because you're the head coach of a college.
• 48:31
Speaker 3: And like I said, it's just different at the next level.
• 48:34
Speaker 5: And I think at the collegiate level, to your point,
• 48:37
Speaker 5: I would agree they probably are a little tougher on
• 48:40
Speaker 5: coaches because at the collegiate level, you pick everything.
• 48:43
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 48:44
Speaker 5: So you have full control of the program where if
• 48:46
Speaker 5: you're a head coach of the NFL, I think they
• 48:49
Speaker 5: allot you just a little bit of grace because you
• 48:51
Speaker 5: don't necessarily pick the players. You got a GM who
• 48:54
Speaker 5: is kind of in the way of that process.
• 48:55
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 48:56
Speaker 5: So sometimes you got to just coach with what you get. And,
• 48:59
Speaker 5: you know, you don't have full control over maybe the
• 49:01
Speaker 5: coaching hires all the time. So there's a little bit of,
• 49:04
Speaker 5: you know, things in which we're as opposed to college.
• 49:07
Speaker 4: You literally coach. got carte blanche over everything. You're the GM,
• 49:13
  Speaker 4: you're a mini AD.
• 49:14
Speaker 5: Particularly if you're talking about a football, excuse me, a
• 49:18
Speaker 5: program like football where you have so many moving parts.
• 49:20
Speaker 5: So you're at least a mini AD even within that confines.
• 49:26
Speaker 3: And I think a lot of coaches, specifically me, I'll
• 49:30
Speaker 3: speak to, at least for me, going into coaching, not
• 49:35
Speaker 3: fully aware of that whole structure that all of a
• 49:39
Speaker 3: sudden now I am in charge of. Or I have
• 49:42
Speaker 3: to find somebody to be in charge of it to
• 49:45
Speaker 3: do it who might not know how to do it either.
• 49:48
Speaker 4: But I want somebody I trust. I want somebody I know.
• 49:52
Speaker 3: And really, I think in that situation, it's just a really,
• 49:56
Speaker 3: really difficult. I think coaching as a whole is really,
• 50:00
Speaker 3: really a difficult situation no matter really what level it's at.
• 50:04
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
• 50:06
Speaker 3: All right, well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll get out of here,
• 50:09
Speaker 3: and we will be back again next week. Thank you.
