- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: another episode of the Season with Peter Schreger. We are
- 0:27Speaker 1: recording this on Halloween Tuesday morning. It is trade deadline
- 0:31Speaker 1: day as well, so we're not gonna get too much
- 0:34Speaker 1: into potential transactions or transactions that might happen, because by
- 0:38Speaker 1: the time you listen to this, it's gonna be already done.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But if you listen to this podcast, you know it's
- 0:42Speaker 1: been an ongoing couple weeks where I've been previewing and
- 0:46Speaker 1: giving out a little bit of information about my Celebrity
- 0:49Speaker 1: Jeopardy appearance. Now that it aired last Wednesday, the cat
- 0:54Speaker 1: is out of the bag and I promise not to
- 0:55Speaker 1: mention it every week for the rest of my life. However,
- 0:59Speaker 1: my two beautiful producers slash executives on this podcast are
- 1:04Speaker 1: both on with me now. Aaron Wankof's been the greatest
- 1:07Speaker 1: producer in the game, and Jason English, who is in
- 1:09Speaker 1: that studio every single week with us, is from the
- 1:12Speaker 1: iHeart team. I wanted to open up the phones and
- 1:15Speaker 1: open up the lines and allow you guys to more
- 1:18Speaker 1: or less ask me anything you might have as questions,
- 1:20Speaker 1: but also serve as a press conference of sorts. I
- 1:22Speaker 1: will start with this though for the listener who has
- 1:26Speaker 1: not watched the episode. It was myself, Mira, Sorvino, and
- 1:31Speaker 1: Adam Rodriguez, who is an actor. We went down to
- 1:34Speaker 1: the final Jeopardy question. Servino had a small edge on me.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I bet just about everything and Sorvino bet everything and
- 1:44Speaker 1: we both got it right and she won. I will
- 1:47Speaker 1: give you some behind the music though now as I
- 1:49Speaker 1: think it does pertain to some of your questions, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: we'll get into all of it. If you watched, you
- 1:54Speaker 1: might want to rewatch it so we can get to
- 1:56Speaker 1: the nitty gritty depending on Aaron and Jason's questions. But
- 2:00Speaker 1: here is the backstory of Final Jeopardy if you watched.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So we go into the last couple questions and Servino
- 2:08Speaker 1: got like a one thousand or a fifteen hundred dollar
- 2:13Speaker 1: question and like a five hundred dollars question, so it's
- 2:14Speaker 1: a big point swing of like two thousand dollars and
- 2:17Speaker 1: she had, I want to say, like a thousand dollars
- 2:21Speaker 1: lead on me going into it. It was you know,
- 2:23Speaker 1: it might have been like nine thousand to eight thousand
- 2:26Speaker 1: whatever it is. Now she had twelve thousand, so it
- 2:28Speaker 1: was twelve thousand to like eleven hundred. So she was
- 2:32Speaker 1: up by like a thousand on me. And I'm like,
- 2:35Speaker 1: give me something because I was rolling, I was in
- 2:37Speaker 1: the zone here. I'm like, give me a topic that
- 2:39Speaker 1: I know I can bet it all for and I
- 2:40Speaker 1: can get it right. The topic comes up and it's
- 2:44Speaker 1: tween Lit. My heart sinks. Here's the process of how
- 2:50Speaker 1: it works in real life, just as you see on TV.
- 2:53Speaker 1: You get that final topic, they give you thirty seconds
- 2:58Speaker 1: to write in your wager. So she's up a thousand
- 3:03Speaker 1: on me. I'm like tween Lit. I'm like, like, they
- 3:06Speaker 1: couldn't give me Arizona Cardinals wide receivers. They couldn't give
- 3:11Speaker 1: me like nineteen eighties Van Damn movies. I would have
- 3:14Speaker 1: been money with anything, anything US history. I would be
- 3:17Speaker 1: good tween Lit as much as I'm a pop culture guy.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It is a blind spot. And as I look over
- 3:24Speaker 1: and I would like the Jeopardy producers to hear this,
- 3:27Speaker 1: Mira Cervino has multiple teenage children sitting in the first
- 3:32Speaker 1: row of the crowd, and she looks over to them,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and I get like a thumbs up from them that
- 3:36Speaker 1: they're encouraging her. I'm like, oh, so like any tween
- 3:39Speaker 1: lit of the last ten years. She knows. So my
- 3:43Speaker 1: brain starts scrambling and I'm not intimidated. But I'm also like,
- 3:47Speaker 1: who wrote the Twilight books. I'm like, damn it, who
- 3:50Speaker 1: wrote the Twilight books? I'm Abrams. I knew it. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: was like, it's like Abrams that. I'm like, who wrote
- 3:57Speaker 1: the Hunger Games? I didn't read any of these books.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I've never read any of these books. I'm like, Hunger
- 4:01Speaker 1: Games Collins, Suzanne Collins, this is just walking by a
- 4:05Speaker 1: Hudson News every week for five years, going to two
- 4:11Speaker 1: different NFL games, going to LA being delayed, walking through
- 4:14Speaker 1: Hudson nudes. Then I'm like, all right, what the It's
- 4:18Speaker 1: Edward and Richard or Edward and Charlie. Who are the
- 4:21Speaker 1: two Vings?
- 4:22Speaker 2: It's Edward and Jacob and it's Stephanie Meyers. It's Stephanie.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Stephanie Abrams. Like the Georgia political like in the Democratic
- 4:32Speaker 1: Party shows you how smart I am. I'm glad I
- 4:34Speaker 1: didn't get local election politics either. Thanks for correcting me.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I would have gotten that one all along. So Stephanie Abrams,
- 4:41Speaker 1: we see, is that her name, Stephanie Abrams, the one
- 4:43Speaker 1: down in Georgia? Can we look that up? Or is
- 4:45Speaker 1: that wrong?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Stacey?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Stacey Abrams? Okay, what was the guy?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Stephanie Abrams is a news actor meteorologist on the Weather Channel.
- 4:56Speaker 1: There you go, yeah, shout out to Stephanie.
- 4:59Speaker 3: That's great.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Just like everyone asked me, who'd you go up against
- 5:02Speaker 4: its celebrity Jeopardy, and I said, meet Lacunas for the
- 5:05Speaker 4: first two weeks, and it was actually Mira Servino.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Not great with names.
- 5:11Speaker 4: I'm like me Lacunas. They're like, really, Mila Cunis. It
- 5:15Speaker 4: was Mira Servino.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Anyway, Serveno's got these kids, and I'm like, I don't know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know, so I just said I'll bet just about everything.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I think. I bet seventy two hundred. I had eleven hundred.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And I see her smiling, and I'm like, she knows this.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So we get to it. The question is and I
- 5:32Speaker 1: don't know if the word for word, but basically it
- 5:34Speaker 1: was like this tween literature author later said she regretted
- 5:39Speaker 1: not calling her famous book just Margaret as opposed to
- 5:42Speaker 1: the long title, and I'm like, are you there, God, Margaret,
- 5:45Speaker 1: that's probably wrong, but I'm like, that's Judy Bloom. I
- 5:47Speaker 1: know Judy Bloom. I know Tales, what fourth grade? Nothing,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I know super Fudge. I'm like, hell yeah, I go
- 5:53Speaker 1: seventy two hundred dollars. I'm already in pop committed. Who
- 5:56Speaker 1: is Judy Bloom? I have enough time where I could write,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know, hello, Melon Betty, my kids. I've always wanted
- 6:01Speaker 1: to do that. I was on cloud nine here, but
- 6:05Speaker 1: then I look over and Serveno Slash Kunis Slash whoever
- 6:08Speaker 1: had already written her answer, and it's just like staring
- 6:12Speaker 1: off into oblivion. I'm like, so then they come to
- 6:15Speaker 1: me and it's like, all right, Peter, did you have
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know the correct answer? I'm like, who is Judy Bloom? Hello,
- 6:22Speaker 1: Melon Betty? And he's like, that is correct. Jennings by
- 6:25Speaker 1: the way, a mensch loved this guy. He's like, that
- 6:27Speaker 1: is correct, Peter, how much did you wager? Seventy two hundred?
- 6:31Speaker 1: And you want to say hello to Melon Betty? And
- 6:34Speaker 1: I said good night, guys, good night, Melon Betty, my
- 6:37Speaker 1: two kids, and like that was cool, great, got that
- 6:39Speaker 1: in now, I'm like a competitor in me. As much
- 6:42Speaker 1: as I want everyone's charity to do well, and I
- 6:44Speaker 1: want to, I want Servina to fall in her face.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I want her to come out here and be like,
- 6:49Speaker 1: who's another teen literature person? JK.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Rowling?
- 6:53Speaker 1: I wanted to see something. I want her to get something.
- 6:56Speaker 1: She comes out and she's like, who is Judy Bloom?
- 6:58Speaker 1: And she is right? And she bet it all so
- 7:01Speaker 1: she was nervous about me, which I liked. She bet
- 7:04Speaker 1: twelve two hundred. So I can go to sleep at
- 7:07Speaker 1: night knowing I played a great game. I also can
- 7:10Speaker 1: go to sleep knowing that even if I wagered all
- 7:12Speaker 1: of mine eleven thousand, she still would have won because
- 7:15Speaker 1: she met all of hers. In closing, Michael Davies, the
- 7:18Speaker 1: executive producer who also works at Sony and has a
- 7:22Speaker 1: million other shows, Watch What's Happening Live and Good Morning Football,
- 7:24Speaker 1: all these things. He has put in this thing for
- 7:27Speaker 1: Jeopardy Now where you can go online and look up
- 7:30Speaker 1: the stats how many times you've buzzed right, how many
- 7:33Speaker 1: times you got here was the backbreaker for me, if
- 7:36Speaker 1: you noticed, and we'll get through it. The first first category,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I didn't even get a buzzer in. I was in
- 7:44Speaker 1: a two thousand dollars hole from Go where both Cervino
- 7:48Speaker 1: and Rodriguez had the buzzer down. The buzzer will screw
- 7:51Speaker 1: me up. I finally got the rhythm down, but I
- 7:53Speaker 1: buzzed in on. I got nineteen questions right, Aaron Jason,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I only got three questions wrong my entire jeopardy experience,
- 8:04Speaker 1: nineteen right, re wrong. Two of them happened to be
- 8:09Speaker 1: daily doubles, so I got burned on those where I
- 8:13Speaker 1: got them wrong, and we can go through them the
- 8:15Speaker 1: correct answers. I don't know if you asked me twenty
- 8:17Speaker 1: times if I would have gotten either one of them.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I have no regrets on those, but the one that
- 8:21Speaker 1: really screwed me. There was some question about funguss at
- 8:26Speaker 1: the end, and it says something with the internet and
- 8:30Speaker 1: a web, and these guys both answer, and it was
- 8:33Speaker 1: fifteen hundred dollars and they both answer wrong. And if
- 8:35Speaker 1: I had just stayed quiet and not guessed anything, I
- 8:40Speaker 1: would have had a nice three thousand dollars swing. I
- 8:43Speaker 1: probably would have wanted the final jeopardy with the most points.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I probably would have won the entire thing because I
- 8:47Speaker 1: got Final Jeopardy right, but there was this like like
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'm feeling it. I was hot. I felt like Michael
- 8:52Speaker 1: Jordan against Utah, like I'm like I can't miss right now,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and this is like Cliff Robinson and the Blazers, and
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm just shrugging to the crowd because I'm so hot.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I buzz in and I'm like, what is the dark web?
- 9:04Speaker 3: And everything?
- 9:04Speaker 2: It's a great answer.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Every It was about fungus and a web, and everyone
- 9:10Speaker 1: in the crowd like gasped because you know, on the
- 9:12Speaker 1: dark web it's like porn and like child like disgusting things.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I don't even know what the dark web is, but
- 9:18Speaker 1: I'm like the dark web and he's like, sorry, that's incorrect.
- 9:21Speaker 1: The answer was wood wide web, which I don't know
- 9:25Speaker 1: what that even is. I mean, this is Celebrity Jeopardy.
- 9:27Speaker 1: We're domba, like, what are you doing with wood wide web?
- 9:30Speaker 1: I got it wrong. It cost me fifteen hundred dollars.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I was in a funk after that, and I'll be honest,
- 9:37Speaker 1: if I didn't buzz in, I probably would have won
- 9:41Speaker 1: Celebrity Jeopardy. I have no regrets. I did it so
- 9:45Speaker 1: I got nineteen right, three wrong. Sorvino got like twenty
- 9:49Speaker 1: six right and like seven wrong. So she was quicker
- 9:53Speaker 1: on the buzzer. So if I had like twenty two
- 9:56Speaker 1: that I even got a chance to answer. She had
- 9:58Speaker 1: thirty three. She was quicker on the buzzer around like
- 10:00Speaker 1: eleven of them. So I will take my hat and
- 10:03Speaker 1: I will I will do hats off to mirror Servena.
- 10:06Speaker 1: She kicked my ass in Jeopardy at the last second,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and she did so by being better on the buzzer.
- 10:12Speaker 1: She was a worthy opponent. I am proud of her.
- 10:15Speaker 1: We have not said a word to each other since
- 10:17Speaker 1: and watching it back, she had kind of a snide
- 10:20Speaker 1: comment after I guessed who is Debbie Gibson, like she
- 10:23Speaker 1: was surprised that I would know Debbie Gibson. Mira, please, well,
- 10:27Speaker 1: you were starring in Oscar winning films. I was in
- 10:29Speaker 1: my shag carpet den of a computer room down in
- 10:32Speaker 1: free On, New Jersey, listening to not only Debbie Gibson,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but to Tiffany, to Sina Easton, to Blinda Carlisle, to
- 10:39Speaker 1: the Bengals. I go deep on pop music. That was
- 10:44Speaker 1: my experience. We can ask all the questions. We got
- 10:46Speaker 1: about five minutes until our guest comes on, So I'll
- 10:50Speaker 1: start with you on a press conference. I will call
- 10:52Speaker 1: on you guys, ask me anything. We'll start. We're gonna
- 10:55Speaker 1: start with you, Aaron. What is your first question about
- 10:57Speaker 1: the Jeopardy experience.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So, mister Schrager, when the categories are shown and they're revealed,
- 11:04Speaker 2: which was the one that a gave you the most
- 11:08Speaker 2: anxiety and the one that be you were like, I got.
- 11:11Speaker 1: This, okay, most anxiety was Nobel Prizes. Didn't know what
- 11:16Speaker 1: we're talking about, the Peace Prize, didn't know if we're
- 11:19Speaker 1: talking about like some scientists. And sure enough, one of
- 11:22Speaker 1: the daily doubles was about the Nobel Prize for science
- 11:27Speaker 1: or something, and it was like this this city. I
- 11:31Speaker 1: guess do you remember the.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Question where this? What city is it? Are they awarded
- 11:35Speaker 2: in it?
- 11:35Speaker 1: But it wasn't where they awarded in?
- 11:37Speaker 6: Wasn't it like it, where's the newest prize awarded in
- 11:41Speaker 6: this Scandinavian?
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Yes, I wouldn't have gotten that one. Jason.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I was I'm like Scandinavian, so I'm thinking Helsinki. I'm thinking,
- 11:51Speaker 1: like I got what's Norway? And I didn't have it,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and I'm like, is Denmark? And I was like, I'm
- 11:58Speaker 1: gonna go Denmark. I'm gonna say Copenhagen, which sounds like
- 12:01Speaker 1: an elegant city, great city, and I had just been
- 12:04Speaker 1: watching The Bear and that restaurant. What's the restaurant like Noma?
- 12:08Speaker 1: Is that what it's called. It's like the fanciest restaurant
- 12:10Speaker 1: in the world, and I think it's in either Copenhagen
- 12:13Speaker 1: or Amsterdam. I was like, what is Copenhagen, feeling like
- 12:16Speaker 1: it was chance. The answer was what is Oslo? And
- 12:19Speaker 1: I'm kicking myself. I'm like, of all the daily doubles,
- 12:21Speaker 1: why do I get one in Nobel Prizes? So that's
- 12:23Speaker 1: a great question. The one I felt most confident in
- 12:26Speaker 1: was the EI E I Oh.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You did so well in that yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And I cleaned up bro And it was basically pop
- 12:34Speaker 1: stars who have those letters or pop bands yeah songs
- 12:39Speaker 1: And I got one there in the Gemina bottle from
- 12:43Speaker 1: Christina Aguilera One direction and Debbie Gibson. Kicking myself afterwards,
- 12:47Speaker 1: they said, which Madonna's greatest hits is? E? I E,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I Oh? And I'm thinking about Madonna's greatest hits and Honestly,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'm thinking of the movie what was it Truth or Dare?
- 12:58Speaker 1: And I'm thinking, is it called Truth or Dare? It
- 13:00Speaker 1: doesn't make sense, and like it was around the same time,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and of course it's the Immaculate Collection, which I had
- 13:05Speaker 1: that two CD in my bedroom and I'm kicking myself.
- 13:09Speaker 1: But no regrets.
- 13:09Speaker 6: That was a hard one because they didn't give you
- 13:11Speaker 6: a ton of letters in that one either.
- 13:14Speaker 1: No, it was just like blank, all right, Jason, what
- 13:16Speaker 1: do you got?
- 13:17Speaker 3: All right?
- 13:17Speaker 6: So I don't often request to come on the podcast here,
- 13:21Speaker 6: but I felt this is important. My favorite thing about
- 13:23Speaker 6: this show is when you go deep with coaches gms
- 13:27Speaker 6: about their origin, how they started making copies, cut breaking
- 13:33Speaker 6: down film.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I feel like you have a.
- 13:36Speaker 6: Similar Jeopardy story where you were a viewer and then
- 13:41Speaker 6: you were playing on the Commodore at sixty four for sure,
- 13:46Speaker 6: and then you were you got to read a clue?
- 13:48Speaker 6: Was that last year?
- 13:49Speaker 1: That was last year I got to read a clue?
- 13:51Speaker 1: It was like this NFL quarterback went from the forty
- 13:54Speaker 1: nine ers to the Chiefs and then beat the forty
- 13:56Speaker 1: nine ers the first time they played who is Joe Montana?
- 13:58Speaker 1: All right? Go on?
- 13:59Speaker 6: So that for most people, that would have been enough Jeopardy,
- 14:04Speaker 6: that's the pinnacle. But this season Celebrity Jeopardy, the advanced analytics,
- 14:11Speaker 6: I think.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Are going to back up your claim, your your.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Strong candidate, second place finish, acquitted yourself.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Well, solid showing.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I don't I'm getting to a question.
- 14:22Speaker 6: I'm getting to a question.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I love your question. You're like me on these podcasts.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I don't want to end there.
- 14:28Speaker 6: I think that we've got a lot of influential sports
- 14:31Speaker 6: media and media people who listen to this show. Michael
- 14:35Speaker 6: Davies your your friend.
- 14:37Speaker 1: He doesn't listen to this, but go on.
- 14:39Speaker 6: We can forward him the bar, this clip, this part
- 14:42Speaker 6: Sports Jeopardy. Why isn't there Sports Jeopardy? And why aren't
- 14:46Speaker 6: you the host? This should be on six hundred markets
- 14:49Speaker 6: across the world.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Jason, it's a great question. I'll go even more specific.
- 14:53Speaker 1: The NFL the most powerful brand in the business. Jeopardy
- 14:57Speaker 1: the most powerful game show. I think we could just
- 15:01Speaker 1: do NFL Jeopardy and it would be a huge hit.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Throw it on the NFL network instead of re airing
- 15:05Speaker 1: a preseason game from twenty fourteen or showing some crappy
- 15:09Speaker 1: you know, reair of a game that we haven't throw on,
- 15:13Speaker 1: just episode after episode. We could bank hundreds of these
- 15:17Speaker 1: and it would do really well. I think people from
- 15:20Speaker 1: the NFL network, in the NFL media, you know, conglomerate
- 15:23Speaker 1: that that employs us, listen to this. I'm not trying
- 15:27Speaker 1: to say it's the biggest no brainer in the world,
- 15:29Speaker 1: but it wouldn't cost much. I would do it with
- 15:31Speaker 1: such joy. We could bank four hundred. Now here's my
- 15:35Speaker 1: question to you, though, because I'll spin it on you.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I think it's a no brainer. Do you have current
- 15:41Speaker 1: NFL personalities as the guests or do you have the
- 15:48Speaker 1: most hardcore football fans as Jeopardy contestants? Or do you
- 15:52Speaker 1: like have like Sean mcva verus Kyle Shanahan versus Nick
- 15:55Speaker 1: Sirianni Jason your thoughts.
- 15:59Speaker 6: I think I'd want some personalities in there. So you're
- 16:03Speaker 6: the host, are we bringing on play show?
- 16:07Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 16:08Speaker 1: No, no, no, I just said coaches, Like we have
- 16:10Speaker 1: coaches and gms, and you have owners and you have
- 16:13Speaker 1: some players. But like then you got to really sort of,
- 16:16Speaker 1: you know, narrow it down to the current day. But
- 16:18Speaker 1: I was thinking, like, you know, let's have an owner's
- 16:21Speaker 1: edition let's have NFC West coaches Pete Carroll goes up
- 16:24Speaker 1: against Sean McVay, who goes up against Kyle Shanahan. Do
- 16:27Speaker 1: you want to go that cerific because there's a way
- 16:29Speaker 1: to do that or is it just the smartest celebrity fans,
- 16:32Speaker 1: the guys and gals who live and breathe this thing,
- 16:35Speaker 1: and you can go real deep and be like, who
- 16:37Speaker 1: were number twenty five for the Denver Broncos in the
- 16:39Speaker 1: late seventies. It's like boom, who is you know, Haven Moses?
- 16:42Speaker 1: You know, like, do you want that?
- 16:44Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:45Speaker 6: I think I think I want that. I think it
- 16:47Speaker 6: would be too difficult to to get the coaches, get
- 16:51Speaker 6: the g you know, get your buddies who you know
- 16:55Speaker 6: no football Like, you can't just always be like we
- 16:59Speaker 6: when you guys do that good morning football game, or
- 17:01Speaker 6: you just show pictures of old quarterbacks like that could
- 17:04Speaker 6: be the one hundred dollars rat yes, and then and
- 17:08Speaker 6: move on and get that the elite level. Who are
- 17:12Speaker 6: you inviting on in this first first season sweeps week?
- 17:16Speaker 6: Who we got Aaron Rodgers is a guest, Tom Brady's
- 17:19Speaker 6: a guest, and Peyton Manning's a guest. That's your first episode, the.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Three, the three intellectual quarterbacks, the three you know, smartest
- 17:27Speaker 1: Jeopardy guys. I would have all those guys on. Then
- 17:29Speaker 1: I would go sports media style. I would have Collinsworth
- 17:32Speaker 1: versus Aikman versus Oh I don't need herb Street he
- 17:37Speaker 1: I think NFL like voices who Romo. I would go
- 17:42Speaker 1: Romo versus Collinsworth versus Aikman and have Greg Olsen. You know,
- 17:46Speaker 1: maybe if one of those guys is not available or
- 17:49Speaker 1: whatever it is, with slide Greg and like, that's how
- 17:51Speaker 1: I would look at it, and then you can have
- 17:53Speaker 1: Eisen versus Turrico versus you know, James Brown. I don't know.
- 17:59Speaker 1: There's a million ways to go about this thing, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: I think it's a great idea. Again, the IP is there,
- 18:04Speaker 1: the NFL is there, and I don't want to give
- 18:06Speaker 1: any more away because someone listening is gonna probably take
- 18:08Speaker 1: it and Rich Eyes and Linda posting it instead of me.
- 18:11Speaker 2: All right, I got one more for you on your
- 18:13Speaker 2: final quick one of all the nineteen questions you got right,
- 18:17Speaker 2: which is the one you're most proud of?
- 18:19Speaker 3: Great?
- 18:20Speaker 1: Great question. I took a few guesses that were right.
- 18:23Speaker 1: One of them was the two bridges connecting or the
- 18:26Speaker 1: bridge that connected two peninsulas. It was like the upper
- 18:29Speaker 1: and lower peninsula this state, and it was what is Michigan?
- 18:31Speaker 1: And that was a complete shot in the dark. Another
- 18:33Speaker 1: one was a fungus question. It was early on it
- 18:35Speaker 1: was like this fungus in it. I was just like,
- 18:37Speaker 1: I don't know any fungus, but it's a two hundred
- 18:38Speaker 1: dollars question. What is mushroom? And they're like, that's correct,
- 18:42Speaker 1: and I pretend like I knew what it was. I
- 18:43Speaker 1: didn't know what it was. And then I took a
- 18:46Speaker 1: wild guess on the veal one and it was like
- 18:49Speaker 1: this type of veal is named after a famous musician
- 18:52Speaker 1: who did it my way, and I'm like, oh, that's Sinatra.
- 18:54Speaker 1: So I didn't know and I originally said what is
- 18:57Speaker 1: then I changed it to who is I was. I
- 18:59Speaker 1: was in the zone. I had an amazing experience. And
- 19:01Speaker 1: like I said, the producers were great. Everyone was great.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And it's over and you know, my son got to
- 19:08Speaker 1: watch it. He was proud of me. My wife got
- 19:10Speaker 1: to watch it. I think she was into me for
- 19:11Speaker 1: the first time in like a year. So it was cool.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I got text from I got text from so many
- 19:16Speaker 1: people that I had not heard from in years, but
- 19:20Speaker 1: also people that I didn't even think would be Jeopardy
- 19:22Speaker 1: watchers who didn't know I was going to be on
- 19:23Speaker 1: the show. It really meant a lot. And if you
- 19:26Speaker 1: do know me and you didn't text me, I also
- 19:28Speaker 1: remember that as well, because that's just how I lived
- 19:30Speaker 1: my life, you know what I mean?
- 19:34Speaker 2: It just you know, no beef held there, right, Yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Yeah, We've got a great guest, as you see in
- 19:41Speaker 1: the title here. In a second, we're going to get
- 19:43Speaker 1: to him. But real quick, it's Halloween today and I
- 19:46Speaker 1: dressed as Al Davis on the show, and I like
- 19:49Speaker 1: watched forty five minutes of Al Davis interviews just to
- 19:53Speaker 1: like get down the affect and the Brooklyn yet also
- 19:55Speaker 1: get the walk right. And it felt great. You'll appreciate this.
- 19:58Speaker 1: They blow dry, They did the blow dry of the hair,
- 20:02Speaker 1: but then they slicked it back. It was like a
- 20:04Speaker 1: concrete like slab on my head. I had the white
- 20:07Speaker 1: on white satin with the with the amazing white pants.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I had chains, I had pinky rings, I had the
- 20:13Speaker 1: whole thing. So we get done with the show, I
- 20:16Speaker 1: take it off and I'm like all right time to
- 20:19Speaker 1: go back to Brooklyn. I, you know, take a subway back.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I get back off the subway, look at and I
- 20:25Speaker 1: realized I never removed the rings of the necklaces. So
- 20:29Speaker 1: I'm sitting there with this crazy hair, regular clothes and
- 20:35Speaker 1: pinky rings and a necklace that was like a big,
- 20:38Speaker 1: gaudy silver necklace. I almost got myself pickpocket. I don't
- 20:41Speaker 1: know what I was thinking I was on the subway,
- 20:44Speaker 1: but yes, that was my experience. And then later today
- 20:47Speaker 1: I'll be trick or treating and I gotta be honest,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I kind of want to get back in that Al
- 20:50Speaker 1: Davis gear. I kind of liked embodying Al Davis. It
- 20:52Speaker 1: felt kind of good. Aaron, are you trick or treating?
- 20:55Speaker 1: Do you do this as a man with no children
- 20:57Speaker 1: at the moment? Do you still engage?
- 21:00Speaker 3: Yes?
- 21:00Speaker 2: We did two parties this weekend now just like yeah,
- 21:05Speaker 2: very active we can for me. And also just like
- 21:08Speaker 2: last year, I remember you asked me what I was
- 21:10Speaker 2: doing for Halloween.
- 21:11Speaker 1: As like Beethoven symphony or something like.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I went to the dog Halloween costume contest.
- 21:17Speaker 1: How was it?
- 21:18Speaker 2: I did it again this year and it was incredible.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I love that I was I think, I was telling
- 21:24Speaker 2: Shane afterwards, I have never felt more strong. I was
- 21:27Speaker 2: like it was like rooting for a sports team. There
- 21:29Speaker 2: was one dog in particular I wanted to win, and
- 21:31Speaker 2: they did win.
- 21:31Speaker 1: What did the dog go?
- 21:33Speaker 2: As David Byrne in the oversized suit?
- 21:37Speaker 1: It was making sense?
- 21:40Speaker 3: It was so good.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and like, I truly have never loved a costume
- 21:45Speaker 2: like that. And then I went as Carmi from the Bear.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Yes, dude, great, Why Carmie?
- 21:51Speaker 6: Why not?
- 21:51Speaker 1: Why not still have my temporary tattoo on? Nice? Why
- 21:55Speaker 1: not Richie? Too deep cut? You like Carmi?
- 21:58Speaker 2: I had the equipment for Carmi a little bit easier,
- 22:02Speaker 2: I think.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I would have I would have gone.
- 22:05Speaker 1: It was his name, fac Hodagan. What was his name,
- 22:08Speaker 1: Mattie Matheson? What was his character? He was great? I
- 22:10Speaker 1: love him in the back. All right. One more thing
- 22:14Speaker 1: I have This year, I've been in devouring books on
- 22:18Speaker 1: my flights to LA and back. I've read the Michael
- 22:21Speaker 1: Lewis book about SBF. I've read the Isaacson one on Musk.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I'm reading all the stuff that's out. I'm I have
- 22:30Speaker 1: to make a recommendation everybody read the John Stamos memoir.
- 22:36Speaker 1: It just came out. There's been a lot of press
- 22:38Speaker 1: about some of the things he says about his marriage
- 22:40Speaker 1: to Rebecca Romaine. Don't be sidetracked by that being what
- 22:44Speaker 1: this is. This is a true Hollywood story. He goes
- 22:47Speaker 1: from a kid working the griddle at his dad's Greek
- 22:51Speaker 1: diner in I want to say, like Irvine, California, to
- 22:56Speaker 1: being a soap opera star in the eighties on General Hospital,
- 23:00Speaker 1: to then going to full House, to then a movie
- 23:04Speaker 1: career to then er and all the way in between.
- 23:07Speaker 1: He's got stories about hanging with Don Rickles and Frank Sinatra,
- 23:13Speaker 1: and his relationship with Saggot and Dave Coolier and the
- 23:16Speaker 1: Olsen twins, and then there's some really like honest and
- 23:20Speaker 1: vulnerable stuff about marrying a woman who at the time
- 23:24Speaker 1: was a model, and then after he married her went
- 23:27Speaker 1: on to be the swimsuit Model of the Year Starr
- 23:30Speaker 1: in the X Men movies and had a giant, giant
- 23:33Speaker 1: career while his career kind of the took to the
- 23:36Speaker 1: back burner. And I thought Stamos in this book is
- 23:38Speaker 1: incredibly He's vulnerable and basically says she emasculated him and
- 23:41Speaker 1: her career was such a force in his world that
- 23:44Speaker 1: you know he couldn't live with it. And then he
- 23:47Speaker 1: goes into what he discovered on her and how do
- 23:50Speaker 1: you lift yourself back up? But like, great stuff about
- 23:53Speaker 1: him and his father's relationship, great stuff about him and
- 23:56Speaker 1: Saggot's relationship. I gotta tell you, I didn't expect to
- 23:59Speaker 1: be crying at the end of a John Stamos memoir,
- 24:03Speaker 1: but that is my recommendation to all of you. Stamos
- 24:06Speaker 1: is new. I don't even have the name of it. Aaron,
- 24:07Speaker 1: do you have the name out there, because I'd like
- 24:09Speaker 1: to pass it along.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Yeah. His memoir is called if you would have told me.
- 24:14Speaker 1: If you would have told me, it's fantastic. So everyone,
- 24:17Speaker 1: I promise you will not be disappointed. My favorite book
- 24:19Speaker 1: of all time is a memoir. It's Andrea Agassi's Open
- 24:23Speaker 1: I also think Matthew Perry's Last Year Very Appropriate Now
- 24:26Speaker 1: was incredibly well written and well done and great stories
- 24:30Speaker 1: and tragic in its own way. Another celebrity memoir I've
- 24:34Speaker 1: always suggested to people if you want to read a
- 24:35Speaker 1: good one is The Kid Stays in the Picture, about
- 24:38Speaker 1: Robert Evans. And then another one that is not as
- 24:41Speaker 1: well known. Rob Lowe had a really good one about
- 24:44Speaker 1: a decade ago, and his life is even crazier than anybody.
- 24:48Speaker 1: It's with what he went through as far as celebrity
- 24:51Speaker 1: and fame goes. So all that to get to another
- 24:54Speaker 1: book author, a guest who was on here to talk
- 24:57Speaker 1: about a very cool project he's doing, but figure we'll
- 24:59Speaker 1: do a little deeper dive with him. An idol of mine, truly,
- 25:03Speaker 1: Dan Patrick joins us next. He's a hero of mine.
- 25:11Speaker 1: He's still the top of his game, and he's become
- 25:14Speaker 1: a friend and a guy that I really really do love.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Has got a new book out also, it's called The
- 25:19Speaker 1: Occasionally Accurate Annals of Football. It's with a co author,
- 25:24Speaker 1: Joel H. Cohen. But the guest on the season with
- 25:27Speaker 1: Peter Schrigger this week, it is an honor, mister Dan Patrick,
- 25:30Speaker 1: Welcome to the show.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Are you nervous a little bit? Okay, don't be. You're
- 25:35Speaker 5: used to being asked questions or now you're doing the asking.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah, let's break the fourth wall here. Like when your
- 25:43Speaker 1: guys first asked me to come on as a guest
- 25:45Speaker 1: to your show, it was almost like being asked to
- 25:48Speaker 1: host starting a live or something. I was like, this
- 25:50Speaker 1: is I've been watching you, listening to you for much
- 25:54Speaker 1: of my life and also throughout my career, and you'd
- 25:57Speaker 1: always had everyone else, the Peter Kings and the other sports.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Right now, I was like, oh, I got the call
- 26:01Speaker 1: up to the big leagues, and I just never wanted
- 26:03Speaker 1: to myself when I was on your show. I just
- 26:05Speaker 1: wanted to always do a he's did enough job where
- 26:07Speaker 1: I can get asked back. And now I feel like
- 26:09Speaker 1: Seinfeld that the Today's Tonight's Show with Johnny I would
- 26:12Speaker 1: get the callback. And I've probably gone on like eleven times,
- 26:14Speaker 1: so it's really crazy for me to be interviewing you
- 26:17Speaker 1: right now.
- 26:18Speaker 5: I didn't know that's the goal to not yourself, but
- 26:21Speaker 5: hopefully you achieved your goal. But no, I like enthusiasm.
- 26:26Speaker 5: I like somebody who's different. You did your homework. The
- 26:29Speaker 5: Good Morning Football is a fun show, and you know
- 26:33Speaker 5: that's that's what you want. You want guests that get
- 26:35Speaker 5: your show. They can play along, and you certainly have
- 26:38Speaker 5: and that's why you know we enjoy having you on
- 26:41Speaker 5: and Kyle Brandt as well. You know, it's just getting
- 26:45Speaker 5: fun people on saying interesting things.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I appreciate it. So I'm sure you think I just
- 26:51Speaker 1: grew up watching Sports Center, but I actually before that, Like,
- 26:55Speaker 1: I don't think people realize that CNN had a powerhouse
- 26:58Speaker 1: of a sports department and program like I used to
- 27:01Speaker 1: watch I think it was Nick Charles and one of
- 27:04Speaker 1: the Cellini brothers who.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Was at VINCE or whatever it was Vince, but it
- 27:07Speaker 5: was Fred Hickman and.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Fred Hickman and Nick Charles, right, and I would watch
- 27:12Speaker 1: them every night on their CNN show, and then on
- 27:14Speaker 1: the Sunday nights they would have an NBA show at
- 27:16Speaker 1: like ten thirty and it was and it had Stephen A.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Smith on it before, like Steven A. Smith was like
- 27:21Speaker 1: this national guy. But this is like mid nineties, early nineties,
- 27:24Speaker 1: and you were the dude in the late eighties early
- 27:27Speaker 1: nineties on that network that I fell in love with you. Then,
- 27:30Speaker 1: does the CNN Sports era of sports TV just get
- 27:35Speaker 1: completely overlooked in an ESPN like you know world that
- 27:39Speaker 1: we're in right now.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Yes, And I think that at the time when we
- 27:43Speaker 5: had CNN Sports, we were a better sports department than
- 27:46Speaker 5: ESPN was because we had talent. We also had really
- 27:51Speaker 5: good writers journalists. Because you had to at CNN, not
- 27:55Speaker 5: to say you didn't have it at ESPN, but I
- 27:56Speaker 5: don't think that was a priority. I think entertainment was
- 27:59Speaker 5: a priority there. And when we did our show, Nick
- 28:04Speaker 5: and Fred were as good as any team who's done it.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 28:07Speaker 1: What was the show called? Do you remember what it
- 28:08Speaker 1: was called?
- 28:09Speaker 3: Just CN in Sports Tonight.
- 28:10Speaker 1: To be in Sports Tonight, and I was always like
- 28:12Speaker 1: Sports Center or CNN Sports Tonight, and then CNN Sports Tonight.
- 28:15Speaker 1: We never talked about.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Anymore, no, And there were a lot of there's a
- 28:17Speaker 5: lot of talent that came through there, and Dan Hicks,
- 28:20Speaker 5: Hannah Storm, Vince Cellini, Gary Miller, Dennis Dummler, Nick and Fred.
- 28:27Speaker 5: Those were the people that were there when I was there,
- 28:30Speaker 5: and a lot of people behind the scenes went on
- 28:32Speaker 5: to do great things. The person who started it was
- 28:35Speaker 5: Bill McPhail, who was the first president of CBS Sports back.
- 28:41Speaker 5: You know, he put on the you know, the greatest
- 28:43Speaker 5: game ever played with the Giants and the Cold Cults. Yes,
- 28:47Speaker 5: and he was there for the first instant replay and
- 28:50Speaker 5: you know, so he was a legendary figure. His brother
- 28:52Speaker 5: was the American League president McPhail. His dad, I think
- 28:58Speaker 5: owned the Yankee. I mean, it was great to talk
- 29:00Speaker 5: to Bill, and he ran the sports department, and I
- 29:03Speaker 5: just remember I was there for five years and I
- 29:06Speaker 5: didn't even have an agent. And what happened was I
- 29:09Speaker 5: had lost out on a weekend job in Dayton, Ohio.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I thought I was going to get it.
- 29:14Speaker 5: They gave it to Ken Kettering, who was a better
- 29:17Speaker 5: looking guys first time, like the reality hit of Oh
- 29:20Speaker 5: they may not hire the best guy, but they hired
- 29:23Speaker 5: the best looking guy, and he was. He even thought
- 29:27Speaker 5: I was going to get the job. So I'm devastated.
- 29:29Speaker 5: I'm twenty seven. I'm thinking I'm never going to get
- 29:31Speaker 5: into TV. I was doing radio morning drive radio, and
- 29:35Speaker 5: I go to Atlanta. A former girlfriend was down there
- 29:38Speaker 5: and she said, you should come down here. CNN's hiring.
- 29:41Speaker 5: I go, I couldn't get a job in Dayton, Ohio,
- 29:44Speaker 5: and now I'm going to get a job at CNN.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Ted Turner's not hiring me.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Yeah, So I go in.
- 29:49Speaker 5: I bring an audition tape, an audition tape that didn't
- 29:53Speaker 5: get me the job at Channel two and Date, and
- 29:54Speaker 5: I thought, okay. So the last day I'm there, I
- 29:58Speaker 5: don't even know the process. Peter of how to get
- 30:01Speaker 5: an interview. I have no coaching, know nothing, and I
- 30:05Speaker 5: walk in and I go to the front desk, just
- 30:07Speaker 5: like anybody else who could walk in. I said, hey,
- 30:11Speaker 5: is the person in charge of sports here? And they go, well,
- 30:15Speaker 5: who are you looking for? I go, I don't know
- 30:17Speaker 5: who's who's the head of sports? Is incredible and they go,
- 30:20Speaker 5: hold hold on, yes, I have a gentleman out here
- 30:23Speaker 5: and he wants somebody, uh in sports, and I believe
- 30:27Speaker 5: he has a resume TEP and then they go. She goes, uh,
- 30:32Speaker 5: just leave the tape and somebody will get back to you.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I go, well, I'm going back home. And then she
- 30:37Speaker 5: she called back to the sports department, goes, who.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Is this woman that's this is the light changer. This
- 30:43Speaker 1: is unbelievable.
- 30:44Speaker 5: He's going He's going back home. He wants to know
- 30:46Speaker 5: if somebody can look at it. So they said back,
- 30:48Speaker 5: she goes, where are you going? Are you driving back home?
- 30:52Speaker 3: Like?
- 30:52Speaker 5: How far away? I said, I'm going back to Ohio.
- 30:55Speaker 5: She calls back and says he's going back to Ohio.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Bill McPhail happened to be from Columbus, Ohio, come on,
- 31:02Speaker 5: and he said, have him come back because I said, oh,
- 31:05Speaker 5: I'm going back to Dayton, Ohio.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I go back.
- 31:08Speaker 5: I meet him and he puts the tape in and
- 31:11Speaker 5: he watches three and a half minutes, three and a
- 31:14Speaker 5: half of five minutes, and then he popped it out
- 31:17Speaker 5: and he goes, when can you start?
- 31:19Speaker 2: Dan?
- 31:19Speaker 1: I'm about to cry. I love this story. I've never
- 31:21Speaker 1: heard this. Have you told the story anywhere? This is incredible.
- 31:24Speaker 5: I've mentioned it. But I got hired to do headline sports. Sure,
- 31:31Speaker 5: I'm making eighteen thousand. I took a ten thousand dollars
- 31:34Speaker 5: pay cut to go to CNN. But I wanted to
- 31:37Speaker 5: do sports, and I'm doing it and I'm not even
- 31:40Speaker 5: on camera.
- 31:40Speaker 3: I'm doing headline Sports. But I loved it.
- 31:43Speaker 5: You know, I'm editing all the highlights, voicing it, and
- 31:45Speaker 5: then you you know, get it over to headline News.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Six months later, Keith Oberman leaves the New York bureau
- 31:53Speaker 5: at CNN to take a job in Boston, and my
- 31:56Speaker 5: boss says, have you ever been to New York? I said, oh, yeah, Now,
- 32:00Speaker 5: I had never been to New York. I'm from a
- 32:03Speaker 5: small town in Ohio. I've never been to New York.
- 32:06Speaker 5: And then they go, well, would you be interested in,
- 32:09Speaker 5: you know, being the New York Bureau reporter, replacing Keith,
- 32:13Speaker 5: and I said, yeah, I took the job. I went
- 32:18Speaker 5: and I stayed in the Downtown Athletic Club, which is
- 32:21Speaker 5: where they met. So I stayed there for three months.
- 32:24Speaker 5: I was only supposed to stay for a month, but
- 32:26Speaker 5: I was so nervous that I didn't. I didn't have
- 32:29Speaker 5: enough money to get an apartment in New York, and
- 32:32Speaker 5: so I said, can I stay a couple extra months?
- 32:34Speaker 5: And then I did at the DAC, and I remember
- 32:40Speaker 5: that I finally got an apartment. I made eight hundred
- 32:42Speaker 5: dollars a month and my apartment was five point fifty.
- 32:48Speaker 5: So I wasn't really killing it, but I was. I
- 32:51Speaker 5: was covering New York, Boston, Philly, d C. Any story
- 32:57Speaker 5: that came up. So I'm covering Larry Bird against the
- 33:00Speaker 5: Lakers in the NBA Finals. I'm covering Billy Martin with
- 33:03Speaker 5: the Yankees. I'm there with the eighties World Series with
- 33:07Speaker 5: Bill Buckner in the met I got to cover so
- 33:10Speaker 5: many great events just by being up there, and you know,
- 33:15Speaker 5: it really changed my life.
- 33:16Speaker 3: And I met my wife at CNN.
- 33:18Speaker 1: That's incredible.
- 33:20Speaker 5: And I don't encourage people to lie, but you don't
- 33:25Speaker 5: always have to tell the truth.
- 33:26Speaker 3: How about that?
- 33:27Speaker 1: And I do you think there's a message there though,
- 33:29Speaker 1: because you went to Dayton, you know, I went to Emery,
- 33:33Speaker 1: which is not exactly a hotbed for sports. I think
- 33:36Speaker 1: there's an impression amongst young people in our industry that
- 33:38Speaker 1: you have to go to Syracuse or Northwestern or USC
- 33:41Speaker 1: and there's a path. There isn't a path. You have
- 33:45Speaker 1: to be cunning. You've got to be flexible. You got
- 33:48Speaker 1: to be willing to in my case right for any
- 33:50Speaker 1: blog that would have you, and in your case move
- 33:52Speaker 1: to any city. You have all these students now at
- 33:56Speaker 1: the Full Sell like, what is your message to them
- 33:58Speaker 1: as far as getting into the.
- 33:59Speaker 5: Door, Well, what I wanted to do at Full Sale
- 34:02Speaker 5: University and they have the Dan Patrick School to sportscasting.
- 34:05Speaker 5: Your degree is in sports. Your bachelor's degree is sportscasting.
- 34:09Speaker 5: We want you to understand, you know how tough. This
- 34:12Speaker 5: is what you need to know. We want to give
- 34:14Speaker 5: you the answers before the test. But as I tell
- 34:17Speaker 5: all these students, I can get you over the wall.
- 34:20Speaker 5: Are you running when you get over? Are you walking?
- 34:22Speaker 5: Are you crawling? Because this is a. It's the most
- 34:25Speaker 5: competitive job field in America in my opinion, because everybody
- 34:29Speaker 5: thinks they can do it. Like they all sit there
- 34:31Speaker 5: and go I could do I could talk sports, Okay,
- 34:34Speaker 5: you can. What do you do after fifteen minutes when
- 34:37Speaker 5: you run out of things to say? But I tell
- 34:40Speaker 5: my students, we're going to get you ready. But it's
- 34:42Speaker 5: up to you when you go in there being professional
- 34:46Speaker 5: understanding ins and outs. You may not be on camera,
- 34:49Speaker 5: there's nothing wrong with, you know, being behind the scenes.
- 34:52Speaker 5: And I brought Gus Ramsey with me, who worked with
- 34:54Speaker 5: me at ESPN for over twenty years, and we hire
- 34:58Speaker 5: people who have been in the business. You get hands
- 35:01Speaker 5: on experience. There there is no faculty that is better
- 35:05Speaker 5: and has more experien pence than mine because we have
- 35:07Speaker 5: over two hundred factor in my experience. Then all the
- 35:11Speaker 5: people I worked with at ESPN assignment desk, reporters, producers,
- 35:15Speaker 5: you're hearing it from the people who actually did it.
- 35:18Speaker 5: And that's what I wanted them to understand. This is
- 35:20Speaker 5: the business. If you're lucky, this can be your job.
- 35:24Speaker 5: But there's a your full time your first job is
- 35:27Speaker 5: being a student at full sale university because there's no
- 35:31Speaker 5: frat parties, there's you know, it's it's not socials, it's
- 35:34Speaker 5: none of that.
- 35:35Speaker 3: You're showing up.
- 35:36Speaker 5: This is your first job, and you know it gives
- 35:39Speaker 5: them that dosa reality of how tough this is going
- 35:43Speaker 5: to be. And our job is to make it look easy.
- 35:46Speaker 5: That's why, like I wanted to do it. When I
- 35:48Speaker 5: saw Bob Constance, I go, yeah, that looks easy.
- 35:51Speaker 3: It's not.
- 35:52Speaker 5: It's those who can do it really well make it
- 35:55Speaker 5: look easy and fun. You can never have a bad
- 35:57Speaker 5: day at Sports Center. No one would let you have
- 35:59Speaker 5: a bad day, because how can you have a bad day.
- 36:01Speaker 5: You're doing Sports Center. But you can have a day.
- 36:05Speaker 5: It's just you can't let anybody know because that was
- 36:08Speaker 5: the dream job years ago.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Absolutely so much so that there was an ESPN reality
- 36:14Speaker 1: show called ESPN Dream Job And guess who stood online
- 36:18Speaker 1: with two hundred people in front of the ESPN Sportszone
- 36:21Speaker 1: in Atlanta in Buckhead and guess who. My first break was.
- 36:26Speaker 1: I wait in that line and I was wearing a
- 36:29Speaker 1: shirt that said that said I just want to meet
- 36:31Speaker 1: Bill Clement And it was the most random, like ESPN
- 36:34Speaker 1: person I could think of, the hockey guy I get
- 36:39Speaker 1: in there, I'd never done any broadcasting. They give me
- 36:42Speaker 1: a quiz and I got the quiz all right. I
- 36:44Speaker 1: got ten out of ten. And then I got pulled
- 36:46Speaker 1: aside by Howie Schwab and Al Jaffey and Howie Schwab
- 36:50Speaker 1: was the reacher and they said, what do you want
- 36:52Speaker 1: to do? I said, I'll do this show, sure, but
- 36:55Speaker 1: all I want to do is write for ESPN dot com.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm a huge Bill Simmons fan. I love Ralph Wilie,
- 36:59Speaker 1: I love the writing. I loved reading The Hunter s
- 37:03Speaker 1: Thompson at the time I was writing for ESPN dot com,
- 37:05Speaker 1: like I love it. I just want to chance to write.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And then they led me to a different department who
- 37:10Speaker 1: were the editors on the website, and it all happened
- 37:12Speaker 1: because I wore a terrible T shirt but stood out
- 37:15Speaker 1: and waited in that line. And that was the job
- 37:18Speaker 1: for me. Dream job for you. You go from CNN,
- 37:22Speaker 1: then you get to ESPN. I have to imagine you
- 37:25Speaker 1: go to Bristol. It's not a huge, bustling metropolis, it's
- 37:28Speaker 1: a campus. I have to imagine there's a lot of ego,
- 37:30Speaker 1: a lot of testosterone. What's the pecan order? When Dan
- 37:33Speaker 1: Patrick shows up to Bristol, Connecticut in the late eighties
- 37:36Speaker 1: early nineties.
- 37:37Speaker 5: I got there late eighties, March of eighty nine, okay,
- 37:41Speaker 5: and Chris Berman was he was basically their Mount Rushmore.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Yep.
- 37:47Speaker 5: I mean it was Chris and he probably deserved two
- 37:50Speaker 5: heads up there on Mount Rushmore, Tommy's and Bob Lee
- 37:54Speaker 5: and I got there and look, I thought what we
- 37:58Speaker 5: did at CNN was better than what they did. So
- 38:00Speaker 5: I didn't go in there intimidated from the standpoint of
- 38:03Speaker 5: I don't know if I'm on equal footing. Now people
- 38:06Speaker 5: have to understand where Chris Berman was back then. I
- 38:09Speaker 5: mean without Chris you don't have a ESPN, you just
- 38:12Speaker 5: and Bob and Tom you just don't. Because they were
- 38:16Speaker 5: doing it, we didn't, you know, they probably didn't know
- 38:18Speaker 5: who's watching, how many people, like, what place they had
- 38:21Speaker 5: in somebody's life.
- 38:23Speaker 3: But I got there. They made me observe for three months.
- 38:28Speaker 1: You didn't get on air until three three months watching.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Them, and I would and I kept saying, I can
- 38:34Speaker 3: do this. I know what I don't I've done it before.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 5: And what happened was I would come in and Chris
- 38:40Speaker 5: Berman would call me the Charlotte observer.
- 38:42Speaker 3: He'd go, it's this Charlotte observer.
- 38:46Speaker 5: And all I did is I would sit there from
- 38:48Speaker 5: like five in the afternoon until midnight watching them put
- 38:53Speaker 5: together you know, Sports Center. They had everybody wrote their
- 38:57Speaker 5: own scripts. And in the right corner, so we had
- 39:00Speaker 5: this wall of monitors, so all these games are up
- 39:04Speaker 5: there in the in the bottom right corner was porn.
- 39:08Speaker 5: So Porn was playing after management.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Spice Network just on.
- 39:13Speaker 5: He scrambled, and I just remembered it was right there
- 39:17Speaker 5: in the right corner. All these games are going on
- 39:19Speaker 5: and porn is in, you know, the right, bottom right
- 39:22Speaker 5: corner of it. And I go, I'm not at CNN anymore.
- 39:27Speaker 5: And I was going to do my first show, and
- 39:32Speaker 5: I don't know who was going.
- 39:33Speaker 3: To anchor with me.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Who's anchoring with you?
- 39:35Speaker 5: Chris Berman had just done the eleven o'clock. He stayed
- 39:40Speaker 5: and said, I'm doing your first show. Hell yes, And
- 39:44Speaker 5: I was so honored by that because he stayed. And
- 39:50Speaker 5: I just remember he was so loud when we got
- 39:52Speaker 5: on the air, and I even said that, I go, man,
- 39:56Speaker 5: you're loud, and he goes, you can always go back
- 39:59Speaker 5: to CNN, and I was like, all right, let's go.
- 40:03Speaker 3: I'm all in with this.
- 40:05Speaker 5: But the fact that Chris and I never forgot that,
- 40:08Speaker 5: I thought it was a wonderful gesture. And then soon
- 40:11Speaker 5: after that I started doing the eleven o'clock with Bob
- 40:13Speaker 5: Lee and stayed doing the eleven for fifteen years, and
- 40:18Speaker 5: then decided that I wanted better hours to be a
- 40:22Speaker 5: better father and husband and did the six o'clock Sports
- 40:26Speaker 5: Center the last three years.
- 40:27Speaker 1: A quick anecdote, and tell me if this lines up
- 40:30Speaker 1: with but he was larger than life at ESPN, and
- 40:33Speaker 1: he's still larger than life. We're at the Super Bowl
- 40:35Speaker 1: two years ago in LA and Kyle Brant and I
- 40:37Speaker 1: are like at SOFI Stadium on the outside campus, like
- 40:42Speaker 1: outside the stadium. Everyone's going into the stadium. We're on
- 40:45Speaker 1: the outside and a golf cart pulls by it and
- 40:48Speaker 1: this guy's wearing a I mean, and again my memory
- 40:51Speaker 1: might make it even like it's like a tall tail,
- 40:53Speaker 1: like it's Paul bunnyan or something, but a giant straw
- 40:56Speaker 1: hat in a golf cart, and I just had to
- 41:00Speaker 1: I'm like Chris Berman, and without even hesitation, he tips
- 41:04Speaker 1: the cap and just bows at us.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:08Speaker 1: And then I've been in airports with him. You could
- 41:11Speaker 1: have Leo DiCaprio, you could have you could have Margot Robbie.
- 41:16Speaker 1: The line of people who line up to say hello
- 41:18Speaker 1: to Chris Berman is unlike anything I've ever seen, and
- 41:21Speaker 1: he's larger than life.
- 41:23Speaker 5: He's probably the first guy who connected with people so
- 41:27Speaker 5: personally because it was every night. And think about when
- 41:31Speaker 5: you watch TV at night, are you in somebody's bedroom,
- 41:34Speaker 5: their living room. I mean there is a shared intimacy
- 41:39Speaker 5: to that that he's kind of in my room with me.
- 41:42Speaker 5: He's taught you know, people would say they felt like
- 41:44Speaker 5: they knew me because I was always in their house.
- 41:47Speaker 5: They could hear my voice, and that's the power of ESPN.
- 41:50Speaker 5: But Chris is the first guy nationally who was able,
- 41:54Speaker 5: I think, to connect with people every single night, and
- 41:58Speaker 5: you know, that made him endearing to so many people.
- 42:01Speaker 1: So then eventually you and Olberman link up, and I
- 42:04Speaker 1: will tell you we called it the Big Show, and
- 42:08Speaker 1: it felt like rock and roll. Honestly, that these two
- 42:11Speaker 1: guys were, you know, the ones in the back of
- 42:13Speaker 1: the class while everyone's in a suit and tie. It
- 42:16Speaker 1: was the two of you guys making little underhanded comments.
- 42:19Speaker 1: You had inside jokes you had jokes with the viewers,
- 42:23Speaker 1: and you guys just hit it off in such a
- 42:24Speaker 1: way that at that time in my life, I'll just
- 42:27Speaker 1: you know, everything's personal with me because I'm an egomaniac,
- 42:30Speaker 1: So I bring it back to me. It was Saturday
- 42:33Speaker 1: Night Live, and it was the era of Sandler and
- 42:35Speaker 1: Myers and Farley and Spade and those guys, and then
- 42:39Speaker 1: it was you guys on Sunday nights, and it was
- 42:41Speaker 1: like Saturday Night and Sunday Night. Those were my dudes.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Did it feel that way?
- 42:46Speaker 6: No?
- 42:46Speaker 1: When you were doing it, did you realize the impact
- 42:48Speaker 1: you were making on an entire generation?
- 42:50Speaker 5: We later we did. But you have to understand. Management
- 42:54Speaker 5: did not encourage us. They didn't want us to call
- 42:58Speaker 5: it the Big Show. They were worried, and you know,
- 43:02Speaker 5: a former boss of mine said, we don't want another Berman.
- 43:04Speaker 3: We don't want somebody.
- 43:05Speaker 5: Who we can control larger than the brand. Yes, and
- 43:08Speaker 5: they were worried about that, and I understand that. But
- 43:12Speaker 5: Keith and I we just sort of said, Okay, we
- 43:15Speaker 5: have to do this in a clandestine way.
- 43:17Speaker 3: That's why we had inside jokes. That's why it was sneaky.
- 43:20Speaker 5: It was never overt and I think it made for
- 43:23Speaker 5: a better show. It's like, you know when I used
- 43:25Speaker 5: to listen to Howard Stern, when you couldn't say certain
- 43:28Speaker 5: words or you couldn't show something, it made it even
- 43:31Speaker 5: more impactful. It's like, oh my god, now I can
- 43:34Speaker 5: visualize that we weren't allowed to be in front of
- 43:39Speaker 5: the product. It was you had to be sort of
- 43:42Speaker 5: pick your spots have fun with it. But Keith was
- 43:46Speaker 5: such a wonderful team player that he wanted to make
- 43:50Speaker 5: a great show every single night, every single night. And
- 43:54Speaker 5: we never took it for granted. You never mailed anything in.
- 43:57Speaker 5: It was every night and you wanted to entertain each
- 44:00Speaker 5: other that we never knew what you were going to write.
- 44:03Speaker 5: I never looked at his scripts, he never looked at mine.
- 44:06Speaker 5: Probably sixty to seventy percent of the show was AdLib
- 44:10Speaker 5: and we only had three camera people and a floor director,
- 44:14Speaker 5: and you were trying to entertain them, and we thought
- 44:16Speaker 5: if we made them laugh, then maybe the people who
- 44:19Speaker 5: were watching. But we never really knew the impact until
- 44:24Speaker 5: a little bit later on, and then Keith was only
- 44:26Speaker 5: there for I think five years.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but it was it was magic.
- 44:31Speaker 5: We never ever ever discussed why it works or let's
- 44:36Speaker 5: change something. It never we would type our scripts. Keith
- 44:40Speaker 5: would usually type his in forty five minutes, it would
- 44:42Speaker 5: take me three hours, and then we would get together.
- 44:47Speaker 5: They didn't want to they didn't want to pay for
- 44:49Speaker 5: a makeup artist, so we had to put our own
- 44:51Speaker 5: makeup on in the bathroom at ten thirty at night,
- 44:54Speaker 5: and then we'd be on the air at eleven and
- 44:58Speaker 5: then we go our separate ways. But when we got
- 45:00Speaker 5: to ESPN, we were doing a show. But that was
- 45:04Speaker 5: really the only interaction that we had. But I liked
- 45:07Speaker 5: it because we didn't waste things.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Meet Kyle Bran, I do the same thing. We don't
- 45:13Speaker 1: ever reveal. I didn't even know what he's doing is
- 45:15Speaker 1: Halloween today, Like we don't ever reveal anything. Yeah, for
- 45:17Speaker 1: the air, say for the air, I.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Like the surprise element of it. But it was live,
- 45:22Speaker 5: and there's something about doing live. But also we would
- 45:26Speaker 5: do the highlights and the fact that we were on
- 45:28Speaker 5: at eleven o'clock at night. Let's say a game ended
- 45:31Speaker 5: at eleven o'clock or eleven oh seven. They'd have to
- 45:34Speaker 5: edit the highlights and then bring them in. We hadn't
- 45:36Speaker 5: seen them sure, so you're getting a shot sheet. Yeah,
- 45:39Speaker 5: they give me a shot sheet, they bring it in.
- 45:41Speaker 5: I'd be I can't tell you the number of times
- 45:43Speaker 5: I'd be on camera. So I'd be reading the prompter
- 45:46Speaker 5: here and I go and Cleveland hosting Milwaukee, and Kenny
- 45:49Speaker 5: Lofton is having an incredible streak. You know, he's nineteen
- 45:54Speaker 5: games in a row. I'm reaching out over here off
- 45:56Speaker 5: camera to get and let's go. Let's go to Cleveland,
- 46:00Speaker 5: you know, Municipal Stadium, boom, And then I looked down
- 46:04Speaker 5: at the shotsheet and then we start the highlights. Yeah,
- 46:07Speaker 5: and just the rush that you would have such a
- 46:11Speaker 5: though it's live and there'd be names on there, spelling henmanship,
- 46:17Speaker 5: and you'd just go, you know what. And that's why
- 46:20Speaker 5: we came up with catchphrases because it allowed you to
- 46:24Speaker 5: cheat a little bit. So if there was Greg Maddox tomorrow,
- 46:29Speaker 5: you know, three to one to Mark McGuire gone, and
- 46:31Speaker 5: then I would pause because then I could look on
- 46:34Speaker 5: the shot sheet and go, McGuire's thirty second of the year.
- 46:38Speaker 5: You know, he's got ninety four RBIs and the Cardinals
- 46:41Speaker 5: leave five three. So it allowed us to kind of
- 46:44Speaker 5: gather and then you could look at the shot sheet
- 46:47Speaker 5: and it just kind of helped. And then after a
- 46:49Speaker 5: while we sort of mocked ourselves with let's come up
- 46:53Speaker 5: with catchphrases that are so stupid because of them, it
- 46:57Speaker 5: was cow Hide joy Ride and I remember, okay, it
- 47:01Speaker 5: was a home run, and I was like, that's a
- 47:03Speaker 5: cow hide joy ride. And I remember keep going cal
- 47:07Speaker 5: like he even said it on the air. It's like,
- 47:09Speaker 5: cal height, what what? And I just I got the
- 47:14Speaker 5: biggest kick out of We wanted to make each other think, laugh,
- 47:20Speaker 5: you know, whatever emotion you could get out of somebody.
- 47:23Speaker 5: If it was a serious story, you know you wanted
- 47:26Speaker 5: you wanted that. But you know it worked. And I
- 47:30Speaker 5: remember when he left, I said, you'll never have this again.
- 47:33Speaker 5: He had gotten I think he had gotten bored. I
- 47:35Speaker 5: think he wanted a different lifestyle and he went to
- 47:38Speaker 5: Fox and I just said, you'll never get this ever again.
- 47:41Speaker 5: And you know he realized that soon after, and I
- 47:44Speaker 5: never got it back again. I had wonderful people to
- 47:48Speaker 5: anchor with, but there was nothing like that with anybody else,
- 47:53Speaker 5: just because man, when you're on that wire and there's
- 47:56Speaker 5: no net and you know you can trust that person,
- 47:59Speaker 5: you know you really build a bond, and we certainly
- 48:03Speaker 5: had that.
- 48:03Speaker 1: It's special, But then you guys crossed into like beyond
- 48:08Speaker 1: just Sports Center here, I mean the commercials which you
- 48:10Speaker 1: guys dubbed this is Sports Center. But then I think
- 48:13Speaker 1: a major moment for like back now every rapper has
- 48:17Speaker 1: athletes in their videos, and every musician is dating and
- 48:20Speaker 1: a half. It wasn't necessarily the case when you guys
- 48:22Speaker 1: were on that Hooty and the Blowfish video. That was
- 48:24Speaker 1: major for everyone, Like that was major. Can you take
- 48:26Speaker 1: us through the impetus and the genesis of that story.
- 48:29Speaker 5: Well, I'll go back to the this is Sports Center
- 48:32Speaker 5: ad campaign because that started after Keith and I got
- 48:36Speaker 5: scolded for basically trying to secede.
- 48:41Speaker 3: From the union.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Like hey, well you guys, you know, we were a
- 48:45Speaker 5: hot air balloon that was tethered, but we were still
- 48:47Speaker 5: drifting pretty high up, and I remember we got called
- 48:50Speaker 5: in and management yelled at us, I mean really yelled
- 48:54Speaker 5: at us, and I remember they didn't they wanted us
- 48:57Speaker 5: to stop calling at the big show. We wanted every
- 49:00Speaker 5: time you go to break when you're teasing things, we
- 49:02Speaker 5: want you to end with this is Sports Center. And
- 49:06Speaker 5: I remember when we came out of the meeting, and
- 49:10Speaker 5: Keith famously said, I'm shell shocked. I mean, I'm like,
- 49:13Speaker 5: I can't lose this job. I got three kids. And
- 49:17Speaker 5: so Keith goes and I go, well, yes, they're not
- 49:21Speaker 5: going to fire us. We'll say this is Sports Center.
- 49:25Speaker 5: I go, okay, So this is in the afternoon. We
- 49:27Speaker 5: have to do a show that night. I mean, imagine
- 49:29Speaker 5: how we feel we just got aired out by manager.
- 49:32Speaker 1: I've had those talks.
- 49:34Speaker 5: We get there doing the show, we go to break
- 49:39Speaker 5: after like eighteen minutes, and then you know, coming up
- 49:42Speaker 5: Da da da, and Keith goes this and Smarts Center,
- 49:48Speaker 5: and I go, all right, it's on right there. And
- 49:53Speaker 5: then they created the ad campaign. So I go to
- 49:55Speaker 5: my boss, John Walsh. I go, why don't we promote
- 49:58Speaker 5: Sports Center? He goes, we don't need to. I said,
- 50:00Speaker 5: you promote all these other shows, you know, NFL Countdown.
- 50:03Speaker 5: And then he said, all right, we'll do an ad
- 50:06Speaker 5: campaign and it was called this is Sports Center. We
- 50:09Speaker 5: couldn't get any athletes to show up because you have
- 50:12Speaker 5: to go to Bristol, Connecticut.
- 50:13Speaker 3: They don't pay you.
- 50:15Speaker 5: They gave you a like a donation stipend of two
- 50:19Speaker 5: thousand dollars for charity.
- 50:21Speaker 3: And I called Grant Hill.
- 50:22Speaker 5: I called a lot of people, but I called Grant
- 50:25Speaker 5: Hill and Jason Kidd, and I said, would you like
- 50:27Speaker 5: to be in a commercial co Rookies of the Year,
- 50:29Speaker 5: Let's go, I know, and you know it turned out
- 50:34Speaker 5: they both were like, well, where do we have to go?
- 50:36Speaker 5: And I go Bristol, Connecticut. What do we get paid?
- 50:39Speaker 5: I go, well, you don't get paid, and thank god
- 50:42Speaker 5: they did it. So Grant played the piano in the lobby.
- 50:46Speaker 5: When I have a bad show, he's, you know, the jacket,
- 50:49Speaker 5: the jacket over my shoulder. And then and then Jason
- 50:52Speaker 5: Kidd we went to a helipad and he was getting
- 50:56Speaker 5: out of a helicopter with his videotape of his game
- 51:01Speaker 5: and here were his highlights, and then he was telling
- 51:04Speaker 5: us what highlights those were the first two and then
- 51:06Speaker 5: after that everybody wanted their own Sports Center commercial. And
- 51:11Speaker 5: then I think because hooting the blowfish they had just
- 51:15Speaker 5: broken with hold my hand yep, I actually ran into
- 51:20Speaker 5: we crossed paths at the Masters. I've known those guys
- 51:24Speaker 5: for it's twenty nine years now, but they were too afraid,
- 51:30Speaker 5: nervous to say allow to me and I didn't see
- 51:32Speaker 5: them there, but they said, you know, we walked by you,
- 51:35Speaker 5: and I think it was the ninety four Masters, and
- 51:38Speaker 5: they reached out and said would we like to be
- 51:41Speaker 5: in the video. And I don't know if Keith was
- 51:43Speaker 5: aware of them or how aware I was, and I
- 51:47Speaker 5: knew he was going to have Dan Marino and some
- 51:49Speaker 5: other people, and then we became friends, so i've been.
- 51:54Speaker 5: My fortieth birthday, I went to Europe with them for
- 51:58Speaker 5: eight days, traveling around with them London, Scotland and Ireland
- 52:02Speaker 5: doing the shows, first time they'd been over there as
- 52:04Speaker 5: a band. And the fiftieth they came to my house
- 52:08Speaker 5: and performed. And then my sixtieth I went with some friends,
- 52:12Speaker 5: my brothers and Darius and we went to Pebble Beach.
- 52:15Speaker 5: If I'm around when I'm seventy, I'm not sure what
- 52:18Speaker 5: I'm going to ask them to do, but they'll probably
- 52:21Speaker 5: you know, at least Darius is going to be involved
- 52:23Speaker 5: in it because he's he's been around for a long time,
- 52:25Speaker 5: good friend.
- 52:26Speaker 1: So cool. Then you get the connection with the Sandler
- 52:29Speaker 1: guys and you're in probably like a dozen Sandler.
- 52:32Speaker 5: Movies, twenty I think twenty or twenty one movie. It
- 52:35Speaker 5: sounds that sounds, you know, pretentious that I don't know
- 52:38Speaker 5: how many movies, but it's I think it's twenty I.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Mean, and it's not just you, it's the Danet's, it's
- 52:43Speaker 1: all the guys.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Yes, well, he's extremely loyal as.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Oh I can imagine. I mean, look at their guys
- 52:50Speaker 1: in his movies, all of them.
- 52:51Speaker 5: Yeah, he goes, Danny, once you're in, you're in, and
- 52:53Speaker 5: I you know, it's like a mob family, Like you're in,
- 52:56Speaker 5: you're in for life.
- 52:57Speaker 1: What was what was the first movie you did with him?
- 52:59Speaker 5: I did water Boy, okay, and then I told him
- 53:03Speaker 5: I didn't want to play myself like once again hell arrogant,
- 53:07Speaker 5: Like all good, I don't want to be myself and
- 53:09Speaker 5: he goes, all right. Sandler goes, you're Danny mcpatrick. You're
- 53:13Speaker 5: going to be a police officer and wear a mustache.
- 53:16Speaker 5: And I'm in the longest yard and I'm a police
- 53:19Speaker 5: officer wearing a mustache, and uh, we try to arrest
- 53:23Speaker 5: Sandler at the beginning of the movie.
- 53:24Speaker 1: I remember, I remember all of what was the that's
- 53:28Speaker 1: that's my boy, that's my boy.
- 53:30Speaker 5: I go, Yeah, he wanted me to be a sort
- 53:34Speaker 5: of a Jerry Springer type guy talk show host and
- 53:39Speaker 5: just go with it. I'm on stage with Dave Matthews,
- 53:42Speaker 5: Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman. I mean, he's he's been very
- 53:46Speaker 5: very generous. I don't know if it's to the detriment
- 53:49Speaker 5: of the you know, finished product, but he's been very
- 53:52Speaker 5: very generous through the years. And he wrote the forward
- 53:54Speaker 5: to this book. He didn't even know what a forward was,
- 53:58Speaker 5: because I said, Sadman, can you write the forward to
- 54:02Speaker 5: this book?
- 54:03Speaker 3: Danny? What's a forward?
- 54:04Speaker 5: I said, you know, the beginning the book, and you know,
- 54:07Speaker 5: you kind of write whatever. He goes, what am I
- 54:10Speaker 5: writing about? I said, you can write about your love
- 54:13Speaker 5: of the Jets, all right? Can I write about how
- 54:15Speaker 5: much I hate the Patriots? I said, yeah, yeah, go ahead.
- 54:18Speaker 5: He goes, how long is it going to be? I
- 54:19Speaker 5: go just go until you stop up? And he goes, Okay.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Next day he sends me his forward, the draft, and
- 54:29Speaker 5: then he goes there, hopefully that's what you need and
- 54:32Speaker 5: I said, awesome, Sam Man, it'll be great. And then
- 54:36Speaker 5: the next day he texts me he said, Danny got
- 54:39Speaker 5: to take Tom Brady's stuff out. You know, I hated
- 54:43Speaker 5: tom Brady because he was with the Patriots. But I
- 54:45Speaker 5: don't want to say I hate Tom Brady now, okay,
- 54:47Speaker 5: And then I said, yeah, we'll take it out, don't
- 54:49Speaker 5: worry about it. So it's about his love of the Jets,
- 54:52Speaker 5: growing up in New Hampshire, being a Jets fan.
- 54:55Speaker 3: So good.
- 54:56Speaker 1: They say that his sets, like when you're filming is
- 54:59Speaker 1: he's so hospitable, he's so gracious, and it really is
- 55:02Speaker 1: as fun as it looks, and a lot of times
- 55:04Speaker 1: it's in some pretty cool locales. Do you have a
- 55:06Speaker 1: good story about where you went from one of these movies?
- 55:09Speaker 3: Well, I went to Hawaii.
- 55:10Speaker 5: That's for just go with it, right, that was just ya,
- 55:13Speaker 5: just go with it. And and it was a big part.
- 55:16Speaker 5: I mean I had a big part. And I'm on
- 55:18Speaker 5: stage with Aniston and Kidman and I remember the night
- 55:23Speaker 5: I got I shot part of my scene. And then
- 55:28Speaker 5: Nick Schwartzen, the comedian Minnesota guy. Yeah, so Schwarty shows up.
- 55:33Speaker 5: He's in the movie. But he goes, uh, Danny, we're
- 55:37Speaker 5: going drinking tonight and I'm gonna drink you under the table.
- 55:40Speaker 3: And I said, I said, Nick, don't do that.
- 55:43Speaker 5: And he's like, okay, yeah, you know, I said, I said, Schworty,
- 55:48Speaker 5: I'll crush you. Well, he didn't believe me. I walk
- 55:52Speaker 5: into the bar. It's a Tommy Bahamas bar in Hawaii,
- 55:57Speaker 5: and he gets me a mind eraser that is in
- 56:02Speaker 5: a tall glass and he goes and I said, I said,
- 56:06Speaker 5: what are we doing?
- 56:06Speaker 3: He goes, We're downing these.
- 56:09Speaker 5: I said, wait, we're gonna take down the whole and
- 56:12Speaker 5: he goes, yeah, And so I down a mind a
- 56:16Speaker 5: racer and then next thing I know, there was another
- 56:18Speaker 5: one that came over, and then another one came over
- 56:21Speaker 5: and I go, I said, Schwarty, you know what, I
- 56:25Speaker 5: owe it to Sandler to be ready to go tomorrow.
- 56:27Speaker 5: And he goes, oh, are you being you want to?
- 56:29Speaker 5: And I go all right, I said, look, if you die,
- 56:33Speaker 5: you asked for this. This is self inflicted. Well we
- 56:37Speaker 5: kept going. Next morning, nobody knows where Schwarty is. Afternoon,
- 56:45Speaker 5: nobody can find Nick Schwartzen. Later in the evening, nobody's
- 56:49Speaker 5: heard from Nick Schwartzen. I'm getting ready to shoot my scene.
- 56:55Speaker 5: Schwartzen comes in, looks horrible, disheveled. Best yeah, I mean
- 57:00Speaker 5: he doesn't want to go to begin with, but he goes, hey,
- 57:05Speaker 5: come here, come here. You can't tell Sandler, you can't
- 57:10Speaker 5: tell I said, what.
- 57:11Speaker 3: The principal or big brother daddy.
- 57:14Speaker 5: He got so messed up he fell asleep in the
- 57:17Speaker 5: uh sand trap at the golf course across from the hotel. Incredible,
- 57:23Speaker 5: lost his keys, lost his cell phone and uh no,
- 57:27Speaker 5: he didn't lose his key, lost his cell phone so
- 57:29Speaker 5: nobody could get in touch with it. But he comes
- 57:31Speaker 5: in and he might have just gotten out of the
- 57:33Speaker 5: sand trap. I just remember, I said, I said, shorty.
- 57:37Speaker 5: He goes, You're right, I won't do it again. The
- 57:39Speaker 5: next night we went out. He didn't have a drink. Yeah,
- 57:43Speaker 5: you know.
- 57:43Speaker 3: We went south to a sushi place.
- 57:45Speaker 5: But Sandman will always say, look, just don't make don't
- 57:48Speaker 5: make the newspaper, don't make the newspaper doing anything.
- 57:51Speaker 3: And then we went out with Dave Matthews.
- 57:54Speaker 5: First night I was there and I'd never met him,
- 57:57Speaker 5: and yeah, wicked sense you humor. But he didn't know
- 58:00Speaker 5: he knew no sports.
- 58:02Speaker 1: He doesn't know like South African, like cricket or right.
- 58:04Speaker 3: Don't you think he knew No, No, I don't think
- 58:06Speaker 3: he knew anything.
- 58:07Speaker 5: Now Ertie L's guy, but he he goes, yeah, I
- 58:12Speaker 5: guess you're the sports guy. I go, yeah, I'm Sandler
- 58:15Speaker 5: would always introduce me as the sports guy to Anniston. Hey,
- 58:19Speaker 5: this is Danny's the sports guy. Kidman didn't care. She
- 58:22Speaker 5: couldn't care less about me. But I'm sitting down at
- 58:26Speaker 5: a large picnic table at a restaurant and I went
- 58:29Speaker 5: to I'm across from Dave Matthews and I reach out
- 58:33Speaker 5: to shake his hand. I knock my beer over into
- 58:36Speaker 5: his lap and he goes, wow, that's quite an introduction.
- 58:40Speaker 5: And he was. He was great. He was so much fun.
- 58:45Speaker 5: Like he would always walk up to me and he goes,
- 58:47Speaker 5: you're pretty tall. How tall are you? Well, they in
- 58:51Speaker 5: the movie there's a scene where he says something about
- 58:54Speaker 5: that guy up there on stage is pretty tall. Yeah,
- 58:57Speaker 5: it was just Sandler left it in there. Uh. Aniston
- 59:01Speaker 5: was wonderful, spectacular, funny, gorgeous, nicole kidmun had just had
- 59:07Speaker 5: a baby, and she was in incredible shape. But she
- 59:10Speaker 5: was an actress. Yeah, I know that's a thing like
- 59:12Speaker 5: I couldn't. I couldn't go over there and seek So
- 59:15Speaker 5: I was trying to prevent them from figuring out too
- 59:20Speaker 5: soon that I didn't know how to act. That was
- 59:22Speaker 5: my goal, and it didn't take long before Kidman's you know,
- 59:26Speaker 5: sizing me up and realizing this guy is not an actor.
- 59:29Speaker 5: Anniston may have been a little more generous, but I thought, God,
- 59:32Speaker 5: if I ever get a loan with Kidman, I'm not.
- 59:34Speaker 3: Going to have anything to say.
- 59:36Speaker 5: Well, I'm thinking, I'm not going to be, you know,
- 59:38Speaker 5: off the set, you know, talking to her. I'm in
- 59:40Speaker 5: the green room of sorts for actors who were ready
- 59:44Speaker 5: to do their scene or waiting to do their scene.
- 59:46Speaker 5: I walk in and Sandler's bulldog is in there, and
- 59:51Speaker 5: you know, some sporting eventison, So I said, got Sandler's
- 59:54Speaker 5: Bulldog with me, and Nicole Kidman walks in. Well, it's
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: one of those where you walk in a room and
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: you hope somebody doesn't see you and then they walk
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: back out. But she walked in and then we made
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: eye contact, so she had to stay. So she comes
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: over and sits down. Nothing's being said, it's it's it's
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: excruciatingly quiet, and I just and my daughter said, hey,
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: if you ever want to bring up something an icebreaker
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: for Nicole Kidman, I've got one. You know, I'm born
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: on the same day as her daughter, and I'm thinking, Okay,
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: if I ever need it, it's in my back pocket. Well,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: first thing I say to her is, hey, you know
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: I have my daughter is born on the same day
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: as your daughter.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: And she goes, Oh, that's wonderful.
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: That's it, that's it. We we had, we had nothing,
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: we had nothing. Well, a couple of days later, Keith Urban,
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: her husband, comes to the set.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: He sees me. He wants to talk about the.
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: Yeah, and her look on her face is like, you
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: know this guy and all you want to do is
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: talk about Tennessee Titans. But Sandman does have you know,
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: it's it's usually good locations and fun people, and it's
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: you get things done, but it's you know, you're having
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: fun along the way.
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: That's really important.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: We only have a few more minutes, but they want
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: to ask you a couple couple other quick ones here,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: because the Sandler connection is one thing. But you've also
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: been on The Simpsons before, and I think that's a
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: good segue to the book. How does this book come
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: together and you're experience to the Simpsons, what's the connection.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: Joel Cohen, who co wrote this with me, is one
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: of the head writers on The Simpsons and he reached
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: out to me and said, hey, we have an episode
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: where we need an announcer and it's Homers involved in
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: a rock skipping contest and yeah, and so I said, oh,
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: I'd be honored. I'd love it, and he said, all
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: you know, I'll set up the script and we'll do
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: us some kind of moment here where we recorded. I
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: go okay, and he goes, you know, while I have you,
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: how do we fix the Jets? And I go, well,
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: how much time do you have? And he goes, no,
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: I think I can fix the Jets. And then he
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: brought up the butt fumble.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: Why is it?
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: You know, all the blame goes to Mark Sanchez and
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: not the offensive lineman who was blown up by Vince Wilford.
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: So these were things that were bothering him. And then
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: you know, he would talk about the Patriot mascot hat
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: the Patriot like all of these things. He goes, I
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: don't have an outlet like you do, and I go
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: and then I threw a couple of things back at him,
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: and then it was I liken it too. It was
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: verbal tennis match where we're just throwing things back together,
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: and he said, I'm going to write these down. He goes,
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: would you want to write a book? And I'm thinking sure,
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: like yeah, and then I didn't realize but he said
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: he sent some stuff back. He goes, all right, this
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: is what you said this when I said, and I
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: think we got somebody who will publish this book.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: And I go, what, whoa why? What? I go?
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: Does America need this? He goes, well, football books are
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: always serious. They're about men, they're about you know, integrity,
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: the Yeah, they're gladiators. And he said, let's just have fun,
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: you know, like, let's talk about Ken Stabler smoking bacon
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: wrapped cigarettes like you know, that's his diet. Let's let's
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: compare Tom Brady's diet to Ken Stable. I said, all right,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: I said I I And he goes, we don't have
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: to be accurate. That's you know, it's the occasionally accurate.
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: So we're not burden by truth. We don't, but we
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: we do represent every team. We look at the decades,
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: we look at football, what it'll be like in twenty
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: seventy three.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: And it was just it was just fun.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: He's an extremely bright guy and it just made the
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: process so much more enjoyable. And then I do the
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: audio version so if you want to bedtime story, I
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: can read this to you.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: And that was a fun problem.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: Like we have something on Nipplegate with Justin Timberlake, and
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: there were two of them that I and Andy Richter
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: wrote a story. Part of the chapter Conan's Sidekick. And
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: then Joel started telling his friends. So his friends go, hey,
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: I got it. I got a story. So I mean
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: I was like, I can't turn this down. I'm going
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: to write a book, but everybody else is going to
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: write the book for me. And you know, we just
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: sort of there was nothing that was off limits. We
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: just thought there would be something. If something was funnier,
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: then we took out something. But it was it's been rewarding,
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: it's been enjoyable, and you know, Joel has become a
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: friend as a result.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: And it's in black and white, right, and it aesthetically
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: looks really cool. Yeah, I love that.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: We do like the Wizinator Ontario Smith.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember on Tara Smith Vikings running back. Couldn't
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: do that airport, that's unfortunate.
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: We fix we fix penalties. Uh, let's see things you
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: don't bring to a tailgate. We made the Immaculate Reception
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: a sermon we do talk about.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: We have people who critique me in the media if
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: I'm any good, and so there's trash talk. I mean,
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: there's there's there's quite a few things in the book,
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: but it's it's meant to be tongue in cheek, but uh,
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: and hopefully people take it that way. But it was
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: and every team is represented, and some of the best
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: players who have played for these teams. We have fun
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: at their expense.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Uh. In closing, I got this podcast here as like
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: a second or third gig, and I love it. It's
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: like my own name on it. It's the first thing
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: I've had that. It seems like everyone's got a podcast.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Everyone thinks they can be Dan Patrick. You've seen the
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: explosion of podcasts, and you know the explosion of McAfee
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: and you name it. Now there's you go on your
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Twitter feed and it's a different young woman touting gambling
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: tips and it's her own show. Like it's everywhere. It's
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: become an explosion of talent facing like here's my takes
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: on this and that, and there's an audience for it.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Did you ever imagine it could explode like this and
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: our industry would go down this direction?
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: Well, yes and no, because if you could do a
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: twenty four hour, seven day a week sports channel, and
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: then another twenty four hour day, seven day a week
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: sports channel, and then another, then yes that the explosion
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: could be there because there's only so many radio outlets
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: for people. Now, you give them an opportunity to have
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: their view of a certain sport or sports or whatever
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: it might be. I just worry that and it's going
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: to sound like, get off my launch, Oh, let's go,
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: I'm trying the same boat journalism. Yeah, that's because everybody thinks,
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: where in the mid nineties got to have a catchphrase
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: to be a sportscaster, now have to have a hot
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: take to be a sportscaster podcaster. I just want to
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: make sure that because a lot of people will be
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: loose with language. They'll say, you know, I'm hearing or
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: and I'm hearing gets left out where Peter Schreger says,
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: you could say, hey, I'm hearing, and then all of
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: a sudden it's no Peter Schreger says that the Raiders
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: are moving on from Devonte Adams. Sure they don't listen
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: all the way and therefore it becomes his story. And
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: I always caution, my students, have a source. Don't be
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: afraid to have a second source. When we were on ESPN,
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: we had to have two sources if you had a story.
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: And as crazy as this is going to sound, I
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: was on vacation with my wife and sitting next to
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: us was Tony Dungee's agent, and he said, hey, did
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: you hear that Tony's going to get the Tampa Bay job?
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: And I go no, he said no, I'm on vacation,
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: and I thought, well, let me call into the assignment desk.
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: I called him the assignment desk and they it might
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: have been Steve Perrisman was the guy maybe, and I
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: just remember he needed another source.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: You're like, god, no, no, no.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: The agent just but I couldn't tell him that I'm
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: getting it from the agent because the agent said, don't
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: attach my name, and I'm going I have an unbelievable source.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: And then he said I need a second source. They
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: got a hold of Andrea Kramer, and Andrea was able
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: to confirm it, and then Andrea, I think, broke the news.
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: But I'm like, I'm on vacation.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: I don't even know what this news.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: I'm not an insider.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: I'm telling you, hey, Tony's gonna get the job with
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: the buccaneer, and I just remember, it's like, Holy, I
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: don't want to work this hard at a story I
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: won't get credit for.
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: I don't want credit for it.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: I want credit for But you know, I caution those
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: who do it that don't don't be afraid if you're
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: going to say something that you have something to back
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: it up, because everybody can do the following. Oh, you know,
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: a source told me. Why don't have to tell you
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: my source? But you hope that people are still going
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: through the process. And look, I came up with CNN,
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: and this is the way you did it, and I'm
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: going to go out that way. You can't be loose
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: with Oh I'm hearing.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Well. I feel fortunate enough that I spent twenty years
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: having to do sources and that by the time I
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: say something on air, you're not questioning that process. A
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: lot of times now, I see people saying stuff on
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: air online I don't know who this person is. I
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: don't even know what this Twitter handle is. I don't
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: know where to believe it or not, and the check
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: marks are all ascue, so I can't. So it's very complicated,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: especially you know when it talks to off season stuff
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and trades and numerous because then I'll hear from the
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: GMS and coaches and be like, I read this from
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: this Twitter feed. I'm like, I don't I don't know
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: who that is. I don't even know who the person
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: is behind that. Someone said it, well, this is the
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: era of anonymous reporters.
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: Yeah, that's another thing where you're going, I don't know,
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: I don't know who the reporter is, but they're breaking
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: this story on Tom Brady and then you have to
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: follow that story and then you have to figure out
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: is it true or not?
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: And it's a real person.
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: Yes, and if somebody has an opinion. We had Rick
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: neuheiseel on and I said, where's Jim Harbaugh on a year?
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: He said he'll be in the NFL. Well, that's just
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: his opinion. It's not like he's reporting that. That's not
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: Bruce Feldman saying, yes, it's Rick Neuheisel said he thinks Jim.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: But that's how it.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: When we think that people go, they'll obviously know that Hey,
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: I'm saying this in jest or I'm just telling you
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: something that's my opinion. It becomes you know, the truth,
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: and then it's out there and then all of a
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: sudden people run with it and you're like, hold on,
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: like you can't bring it back. And I hope that
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: people who do this understand you can have a hot take.
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: I like to have an informed take. It may not
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: be hot, but if it's warm, great, I hope it's accurate.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: More importantly, you're amazing.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: You're awesome. I feel like we could do a part
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: two and we haven't even talked about your interview prowess.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: And we can do a part two whenever you want to.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: People do it, So appreciate your time. Guys, everyone who's listening.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: The Jamie Jamie's pregnant.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Jamie's prego.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: She told us that a couple of weeks ago. We're like, okay,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: that's amazing, and she's like, but I don't know how
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: to reveal to the audience. So today on Halloween, she
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: dresses Rihanna, who of course performed the Half of Me,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: and then she kind of dropped the bomb on the
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: audience and is like and yeah, just like Rihanna, I'm pregnant.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: And they're like, okay, Yeah, she's awesome by the way, Yeah,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: amazing teammate.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: I never met her, and I've talked to Kyle before,
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: and uh, you know, his angry runs are epic. Yeah,
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: I worry that he's Yes, something's going to happen, He's
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: not a something's gonna burst.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, Dan Patrick. Such a thrill. Thank
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: you so much for doing the show.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Man, Peter, thank you, and I'll be watching.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: Aaron Dan Patrick as good as advertised, maybe better? Was
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: that not awesome? Yeah?
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: I didn't. I don't think I've heard him speak so
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: casually and openly about like a bunch of historical not historical,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: but like the glory days of Sports Center, and like
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: that was I loved it.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting. There was that giant ESPN book that
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: James Andrew Miller wrote, and I'm maybe Patrick shared that
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: in there. But like when he starts talking about the
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: stuff with bosses and the bigger than the brand, that's
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: all news to me. Yeah, I'm gonna I'm a big fan,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: you know, like it's a thrill for me. Obviously I
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: was s geeking out. I felt like Chris Farley, like
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: what was it? Like, you know, he's talking to Paul McCartney.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: That was it. The book I'll get, I'll read, I'll
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: probably listen to it. I like Dan's voice, I'll listen
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: to it. But that was cool, and this podcast was cool.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: And as we wrap up, we got to do our
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: weekly sponsor and this is with Uber Eats, our peeps,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: it's time for Delivering Results presented by Uber Eats, and
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: this week's Delivering results winner is Jamiir Gibbs. I was
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: like a proud papa watching Jamiir after I hyped him
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: all of August as a number one running back, as
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: a fantasy guy, as the person you need to be following,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: as the guy that is going to make the Lions
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: a contender out of nowhere. With Montgomery hurt, he gets
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: the Lion's share that carries. Finally, and Monday Night's win
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: over the Raiders one hundred and eighty nine yards from
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: scrimmage jumped into the crowd. Kyle Brandt, my co host
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: on Good Morning Football, had a good one. He said,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: that's called the Ford pickup. You know got the Lambeau Leap,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: That's the Ford pickup delivering results. He's our winner this week.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: And that was delivering results by Uber Eats. Where you
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: can get almost almost anything, the official on demand delivery
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: partner of the NFL order now on behalf of Aaron
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Wan Kaufman on, behalf of the great Dan Patrick On,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: behalf of Jason English, who made his second appearance on
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: the Microphones from iHeartRadio. He's a very very very vocal
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: part of this podcast in the direction it goes, and
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: all in good ways. As far as all the guys
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: in LA we meant to say it, Aaron. Oddly enough, Shepherd,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: you did not hold up their end of the bargain.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: They lost. But Arizona, which is the secondary team where
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: our executives Jason Kleinman and Matt Schneider are proud alums,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: they did a major upset victory on would they beat
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Washington or was it Oregon State? They beat a massive
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: number eleven team, so they did their job. But the
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Shepherd guys and my man Ernie McCook just didn't get
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: the job done. So we got one out of two
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: this weekend, real quick, Aeron, I think think I might
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: go to USC Washington. It's homecoming at USC in Kingsbury.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: Kingsbury invited me to go as a guest to his
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: but if I'm being completely honest. I probably am not
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: gonna go. Seems like a lot of work. I gotta
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: If I go to a college football game, I got
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: a drink and then I get to there and it's
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: like I'm always constantly checking my phone, Like I want
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: to go home. I've got a show in a four
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: am wake up. Maybe I'll tell Cliff I'm gonna go
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: and I'll just lie to him and watch it on TV.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: How does that sound?
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: No, you can't do fat.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: He doesn't know. He's gonna be busy. I don't even
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: know what his job is with the USC. He's like
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: involved with the offense, but he's not the offensive coordinator.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: He's not the head coach. But not I would only
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: go for the pregame and just say hello to him,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: and then I would peace. But I do want to
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: see Kayleb Williams warm up and Pennix too. All Right,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: I'm wasting too much time. Thank you everyone for listening.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: It's Halloween. I'm gonna go trick or treat uh enjoy yourselves,
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Please be safe and we'll see you next week. The
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the NFL
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: and partnership with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts from iHeartRadio, visit
