- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Just a couple weeks after an historic
- 0:09Speaker 2: meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Mark
- 0:13Speaker 2: Carney on the French islands of Saint-Pierre-Miquelon, the federal government
- 0:17Speaker 2: is strongly encouraging the French government from abandoning its proposal
- 0:21Speaker 2: to launch an exploratory snow crab fishery. Fisheries Minister Joanne
- 0:26Speaker 2: Thompson took to social media yesterday to express her disappointment
- 0:30Speaker 2: with the proposed fishery beyond the 200-mile limit on the
- 0:33Speaker 2: extension of Canada's continental shelf. She says Canada and France
- 0:37Speaker 2: have well-established ways of working through fisheries issues, and while
- 0:41Speaker 2: Canada and France met at NAFO's annual meeting last week,
- 0:44Speaker 2: the matter was not raised by French officials at the time.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Thompson says DFO is working with Global Affairs Canada on
- 0:51Speaker 2: next steps, and she's disappointed that France intends to take
- 0:55Speaker 2: that action unilaterally. A flight from Dubai to Israel in
- 1:00Speaker 2: which the co-pilot attacked the captain in the cockpit is
- 1:03Speaker 2: raising a lot of concerns. The plane dropped 17,000 feet
- 1:08Speaker 2: in about two minutes, a terrifying situation. Passengers intervened, going
- 1:13Speaker 2: into the cockpit to rescue the otherwise doomed aircraft. The plane,
- 1:18Speaker 2: which reached speeds of 700 miles per hour, was close
- 1:21Speaker 2: to tearing apart. The flight landed safely in Saudi Arabia.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The federal government has announced a new initiative to attract
- 1:29Speaker 2: more people from the Francophone community to the province. Nearly $ 350, 000
- 1:33Speaker 2: has been set aside for the project over the next
- 1:37Speaker 2: two years. The money will be used to create pathways
- 1:41Speaker 2: for those who speak French and who are bilingual to
- 1:44Speaker 2: come to this province, which government says will help with
- 1:47Speaker 2: population growth and labor market needs. There will be targeted
- 1:51Speaker 2: overseas recruitment as part of the program, with the aim
- 1:53Speaker 2: of attracting people in the fields of education, early childhood education,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and health care. Provincial Francophone Affairs Minister Lynn Paddock believes
- 2:02Speaker 2: people will want to move from French-speaking countries like France
- 2:05Speaker 2: and Belgium to Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 2:08Speaker 1: What we've found with the organizations that are here supporting it,
- 2:14Speaker 1: if you're welcoming and if you put supports in, people
- 2:17Speaker 1: will stay. When we had the discussion on immigration and
- 2:22Speaker 1: Francophone nationally, ultimately it's about employment. And if people have
- 2:28Speaker 1: a job that they can come to, then they can
- 2:31Speaker 1: build a life.
- 2:33Speaker 2: There's a slew of provincial government announcements set for today.
- 2:36Speaker 2: VOCM's Richard Duggan breaks down where they will be and
- 2:40Speaker 2: who will be there.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The premier is on the west coast today for a
- 2:43Speaker 3: pair of events. Tony Wakeham's first stop will be in
- 2:46Speaker 3: Stephenville for an announcement about fire protection vehicles and equipment.
- 2:50Speaker 3: That's taking place at the town's fire department beginning at
- 2:52Speaker 3: 10 a.m. Then at 1.30, the premier, along with Health
- 2:55Speaker 3: Minister Jody Wall, will be at the Cornerbrook Community Health
- 2:58Speaker 3: Center for an event focused on long-term care. Meanwhile, several
- 3:02Speaker 3: other announcements are happening today in various parts of the province.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Minister Wall will hold an event to talk about the
- 3:07Speaker 3: expansion of addictions treatment and recovery services at the Humberwood
- 3:10Speaker 3: Treatment Center in Cornerbrook at 10.30 this morning. Labrador Affairs
- 3:14Speaker 3: Minister Leila Evans will be in Nain for an infrastructure
- 3:17Speaker 3: announcement taking place at noon at the Sandbanks Building. And
- 3:20Speaker 3: Forestry Minister Pleeman Forsey and Environment Minister Andrea Barber will
- 3:24Speaker 3: announce funding at the Volunteer Fire Department in St. Anthony
- 3:27Speaker 3: at 4 p.m.
- 3:29Speaker 2: A sexual assault trial is set to begin for Nova
- 3:32Speaker 2: Scotia-based actor Mike Smith, best known for playing Bubbles on
- 3:36Speaker 2: the TV comedy Trailer Park Boys. Smith has pleaded not
- 3:40Speaker 2: guilty to one count of sexual assault that stems from
- 3:43Speaker 2: an alleged incident in 2017. The actor was charged in
- 3:47Speaker 2: October of 2025, but court documents do not provide details
- 3:51Speaker 2: of the allegations. The documents show that Smith has been
- 3:55Speaker 2: ordered not to communicate with or visit the female complainant,
- 3:59Speaker 2: whose identity is protected from publication. Music and L-Week kicks
- 4:04Speaker 2: off in St. John's today. The four-day event is a
- 4:07Speaker 2: celebration and showcase of the local music scene. It all
- 4:11Speaker 2: starts with an awards gala at the convention center tonight
- 4:14Speaker 2: where there are 117 nominees up for awards in 36 categories.
- 4:19Speaker 2: There will also be performances at venues across the downtown
- 4:23Speaker 2: as well as workshops and panel discussions today through Sunday.
- 4:28Speaker 2: The Newfoundland contestant on MasterChef Canada may have had her
- 4:31Speaker 2: time cut short, but she is looking back on the
- 4:34Speaker 2: experience fondly. Rebecca Abbott, a 38-year-old Gander native, was eliminated
- 4:40Speaker 2: from the program Tuesday night in the second episode.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I felt amazingly blessed. I feel like I represented myself,
- 4:46Speaker 4: truly who I actually am, a jokester, and wear my
- 4:49Speaker 4: heart on my sleeve and a big crybaby at times.
- 4:52Speaker 4: But I'm just so proud. I can't believe someone with
- 4:54Speaker 4: anxiety such as myself who struggles daily and two very
- 4:58Speaker 4: small kids was able to do it all and just
- 5:00Speaker 4: show everyone that moms are good at things too.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And that's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
