- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his Word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James chapter 1 verses 9 through 11.
- 0:20James 1, verses 9 through 11. And this book is written by
- 0:25James or Jacob, the half brother of Jesus.
- 0:29He was one that was one of kind of the leading pastors or elders
- 0:34in the church at Jerusalem. And he's writing to people that
- 0:38would once have been part of his congregation but had been
- 0:40scattered all across the Roman Empire.
- 0:43And he's writing to them some practical things that they need
- 0:46to know for their walk with the Lord.
- 0:48And today in verses 9 through 11, we're going to get really
- 0:52like an upside down own view of our life and our circumstances
- 0:57that I think will be a challenge to you and I and something that
- 1:01will help us as we recognize who God is and what he is doing in
- 1:06our lives. Let's read together.
- 1:08Let the brother or sister of humble circumstances boast in
- 1:13his exultation, but let the rich boast in his humiliation,
- 1:18because he will pass away like a flower of the field.
- 1:22For the sun rises and together with the scorching wind dries up
- 1:27the grass. It's flower falls off and it's
- 1:30beautiful appearance perishes. In the same way, the rich person
- 1:34will wither away while pursuing his activities.
- 1:39OK, what's going on here? Is this just some, you know,
- 1:42anti money diatribe? What in the world's going on?
- 1:45Well, first let's look at verse #9 and remember how the book
- 1:50started off. If you'll recall, the very first
- 1:53thing that James said is considerate.
- 1:55Count it all joy when you fall into various trials and
- 2:00temptations. So these are people that even as
- 2:04he says in verse #1 these are to the 12 tribes scattered abroad
- 2:09throughout the Roman Empire. So to these people in tough
- 2:12circumstances, he says, let the brother of humble circumstances
- 2:16boast in his exaltation. Here, James tells these
- 2:21believers that when you are in a low circumstance here, the word
- 2:29humble, you would see this elsewhere in scripture.
- 2:31This would be like low social status or relative inability to
- 2:36cope. This would be someone lowly,
- 2:39undistinguished, or of no account.
- 2:42This is someone that is not special in the eyes of those
- 2:46around them. No one's looking at this person
- 2:48and going, Oh, yes, they're, they're a really important CEO.
- 2:53They're just a great investor. This is the world's best, this
- 2:57or that. This is just a person who is
- 2:59lowly and undistinguished, and no one thinks much of that
- 3:02person. And God says the person in that
- 3:05type of situation has been exalted by God.
- 3:08OK, in what way has this person been exalted by God?
- 3:12Well first and foremost in the fact he or he describes this
- 3:15person as a brother. This would be the Greek word
- 3:19Adelphi. This means the person that knows
- 3:22Jesus as their savior. Jesus was the Adelphi of James,
- 3:27and here you are brothers and sisters with every single
- 3:32believer in Christ in the world today.
- 3:34And so one that knows Jesus, even when they are looked down
- 3:40on by the world, when they do not appear to have much
- 3:44financial wealth or security, that person is viewed as exalted
- 3:51by God. Because if you will in the
- 3:53economy of heaven, what matters is not your 4O1K or your earthly
- 4:00bank account and said, what matters is your relationship
- 4:04with Jesus. This is the same type of thing
- 4:06that we would read in the Beatitudes in Matthew chapter 5.
- 4:10And we'll, we'll head back to the Sermon on the Mount several
- 4:14times in our study in James, because James has this on the
- 4:19brain as he's walking through these.
- 4:21So Matthew 5 says, blessed are the poor in spirit, for the
- 4:27Kingdom of heaven is theirs. The people that are worn down
- 4:32and if you will kind of bankrupt just in their energy that they
- 4:37bring, that even their spirit is poor.
- 4:41God says the Kingdom of heaven belongs to you.
- 4:43You are exalted even though you are one of God's children.
- 4:47In humble, lowly, undistinguished circumstances or
- 4:52in verse #5 of Matthew 5. Blessed are the humble or the
- 4:55meek, for they will inherit the earth.
- 4:58Those that are in lowly positions, God is going to give
- 5:02them everything. We would also look at the end of
- 5:07Matthew chapter 6 where Jesus would say, therefore I tell you,
- 5:12don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you
- 5:14will drink, or about your body, what you will wear.
- 5:17Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing?
- 5:22Consider the birds of the sky. They they don't sow or reap or
- 5:25gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
- 5:29Aren't you worth more than they? Can any one of you add 1 moment
- 5:34to his lifespan by worrying? And why do you worry about
- 5:37clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of
- 5:41the field grow. They don't labor or spin thread.
- 5:44Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was
- 5:48adorned like one of these. If that's how God clothes the
- 5:52grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the
- 5:56furnace tomorrow. Won't he do much more for you,
- 5:59you of little faith. So I could continue on there in
- 6:04in the Sermon on the Mount. But I think that gives us a
- 6:06little bit of the picture of what James is saying here, that
- 6:10those that feel the the hurt and the emptiness of this life and
- 6:18in the kind of dog eat dog world that we live in, realize that
- 6:22God is lifting you up and he is lifting you up to his presence.
- 6:27That you are a joint heir with Christ.
- 6:30That everything that belongs to the Son of God belongs to us
- 6:34now, and we will one day inherit it in full.
- 6:38And so we can be glad even in needy circumstances, because our
- 6:44sustenance, our daily living does not come from this world,
- 6:49it comes from our heavenly Father.
- 6:51And so we need to boast even in our difficult circumstances.
- 6:57Verse #10 Then James says that the rich need to boast as well,
- 7:02but they need to not boast in their exultation or in the fact
- 7:06that they are great in the eyes of God.
- 7:09Instead he says let the rich boast in his humiliation because
- 7:13he will pass away like a flower of the field.
- 7:17OK well this should bring to mind.
- 7:18I literally just read those verses from the end of Matthew 6
- 7:22where Jesus was talking about the flowers and he says don't
- 7:25worry about your stuff because God cares even for the flowers
- 7:30that are here one day and gone the next.
- 7:32And if God cares for the flowers, how much more does he
- 7:35care for you? He says here for these rich
- 7:39people, He says you need to be glad in the fact that your stuff
- 7:45is temporary. You are not going to have it
- 7:48forever. And so instead of trying to
- 7:50cling onto and hold onto your riches for as long as you can
- 7:55and trying to amass as much stuff as you can, he says
- 7:58rejoice when you lose stuff, rejoice when you're 4 O 1K tanks
- 8:04a bit. You can rejoice here in this
- 8:06circumstance. Perhaps some of those that would
- 8:09have had riches in Jerusalem or in Judea or in Galilee, and as a
- 8:13result of their faith in Jesus, they lost those things and they
- 8:18had to flee. Whether from persecution from
- 8:21Saul of Tarsus, the Pharisee who turned into Paul the missionary,
- 8:26whether it was because of the persecution from Herod or from
- 8:30the other Jewish religious leaders of the time, whatever
- 8:34their circumstances were that they were being humiliated, that
- 8:37they were losing out on their worldly goods.
- 8:40James wants them to know that's not the loss of who you are.
- 8:44You don't have to if you will feel like you are dying just
- 8:49because you're losing stuff, he says.
- 8:51Instead, you are getting back to what God views as most important
- 8:57in your life, That though the flower is there and it fades
- 9:01away, God loves and cares for and provides for the flower in
- 9:06the moments when it has all its petals and in the moment when
- 9:09winter comes and it has faded away.
- 9:11God still has a love for the flower, and God still has a love
- 9:15for these rich individuals. And so don't find your identity
- 9:20in your riches, find your identity in your God.
- 9:24Verse #11 For the sun rises and together with the scorching wind
- 9:30dries up the grass. It's flower falls off and it's
- 9:32beautiful appearance perishes. In the same way, the rich person
- 9:37will wither away while pursuing his activities.
- 9:42Even as we would read in I believe it's First Timothy
- 9:44chapter 6 that Paul commands Timothy command those that are
- 9:49rich in this world that they would not be high minded that
- 9:53they wouldn't just be thinking about their materials and think
- 9:56great things about themselves. Instead he says, I want you to
- 10:00have them focus on what they can give to others, how they can
- 10:04bless and benefit other people, not on what they can do for
- 10:08themselves. And so here as well, James is
- 10:11saying, just as surely as winter comes or the here, the the
- 10:17summer comes and burns up the grass and and the flowers, the
- 10:21plants and all of the beauty that it had goes away.
- 10:24He says rich people realize that what you have is so temporary,
- 10:30so you cannot live for the money, you cannot live for the
- 10:34job, you cannot live for all of the stuff.
- 10:38It's all going away. So don't rejoice in your things.
- 10:43Don't rejoice in the exaltation that you have on this earth.
- 10:46Instead, rejoice in your humiliation that one day it's
- 10:49all going to be gone. What part will you play in where
- 10:54your money goes? You get to choose.
- 10:56Am I going to give my money, if you will?
- 11:00Is it going to go to the Funeral Home and is it going to go to
- 11:04taxes and is it going to go to paying off my dad's?
- 11:08Is it is my money while I have it, is it going to be spent on a
- 11:12great life for me or is it going to be spent in investing in the
- 11:15Kingdom of God? I was talking with even our
- 11:19church elders the evening before.
- 11:21I'm recording this and we were talking about our own personal
- 11:25giving and the fact that we are able to be a part of what God is
- 11:30doing in our local congregation right now through our giving.
- 11:34And we could hoard our finances, but then we would not get to see
- 11:39God do incredible, amazing things through our money.
- 11:44And I want to encourage you all. I don't often do this, but if
- 11:49you have been given financial means by the Lord, don't just
- 11:54lay up for yourselves treasure on earth where moth and and rust
- 11:59destroy, and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for
- 12:03yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
- 12:07destroys, and where thieves don't break in and steal.
- 12:10For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- 12:14And if, if you're like, OK, well, where do I give?
- 12:17If you have a local congregation, give to that local
- 12:20church. If you're like, I don't really
- 12:22have a local congregation, we have so many ministry needs at,
- 12:28at Tabernacle, I'll just throw our name in the mix and you can
- 12:32give it any time at tbces.sex.com/give.
- 12:37tbces.sex.com/give. And if this podcast has been a
- 12:42blessing to you, that's not going right into my wallet.
- 12:44Like my, my salary is not based on how many, you know, podcast
- 12:50listeners or, or viewers that I have.
- 12:54It's not determined by, you know, if there's greater and
- 12:57greater and greater money being given to the church, that
- 12:59doesn't affect me in my day-to-day.
- 13:03Frankly, for me, I've been praying that God would bring
- 13:07along another staff member, another pastor that would be
- 13:11able to join me and my fellow elders at Tabernacle in the work
- 13:14that we have here, especially to be able to minister to children
- 13:19and youth and parents. And so I am praying that our
- 13:24church family as we're all giving together and as God
- 13:28brings in new people and God's forwarding the work that we
- 13:32would be able to financially support a family.
- 13:35There was 1 gentleman that even reached out a few months ago
- 13:39that was looking for a full time position and absolutely like
- 13:44amazing guy and had a, had a background of ministry work and
- 13:52of ministry education and experience that I was like, wow,
- 13:55this is amazing. And I so wish, oh man, I wish we
- 13:59could bring this gentleman on because God has used him in some
- 14:03incredible ways. And I believe that God will use
- 14:06him in some, in some incredible ways.
- 14:07And so even for our church, I'm praying like Lord, would you
- 14:11help us not to be focused on building our Kingdom?
- 14:14Would you help us to be focused on building your Kingdom and on
- 14:17enabling your people to do the work of the ministry?
- 14:21And so I say all of that to say this, we we would love if some
- 14:26more people were joining us in the work in in supporting God's
- 14:31work here at Tabernacle. And if God leads you to help out
- 14:35in that way, just know that it's going to good gospel causes,
- 14:39it's going to the the word of God and the gospel of Jesus and,
- 14:43and the proclamation of salvation going out honestly,
- 14:47all across the world now through Tabernacle talk.
- 14:49It's going out in our little corner of the world.
- 14:53And I'm so excited to see what God is continuing to do in and
- 14:58through our church. So kind of in summary of what
- 15:00we've learned today, I took a little bit of a rabbit trail,
- 15:03but thank you for for sticking with me even through that.
- 15:06When we're in difficult circumstances, rejoice knowing
- 15:10that God thinks the world of us. And though the world doesn't
- 15:13think anything of us, we are joint heirs with Jesus.
- 15:16And so we can rejoice even in our humble circumstances because
- 15:20God is lifting us up. And when we have things in this
- 15:24world, don't hold on to, don't love the things, love Jesus.
- 15:29And so that way one day when all of the stuff is gone and when
- 15:33you have passed off the scene, you have laid up for yourself
- 15:36treasure in heaven, not just treasure on this earth.
- 15:40Hope there'd be an encouragement to you today.
- 15:42I know today was a little bit of a weird episode, but glad to be
- 15:45able to spend this time with you.
- 15:47Hope that you have a wonderful day.
