- 0:33bench. They'll be at the fair.
- 0:34Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain broadcasting from the Iowa State
- 0:38Fair today, but Sean is back after parental leave and good to
- 0:42have him back in the building. Well done, Lucas Strain
- 0:44navigating those waters for the last couple of weeks.
- 0:47Coming up on our program in about 20 minutes.
- 0:50We'll get Tom Caker in advance of Hawkeye Football Media Day.
- 0:54That gets underway this afternoon.
- 0:56So we'll get Tom in early this morning or early this afternoon.
- 0:591220 some Hawkeye topics with Tom Caker coming up at 12:20.
- 1:05Look forward to hearing from Thomas.
- 1:08That gets under way here with Kirk Ference.
- 1:11What'd you say, 145? I believe so, yeah. 1:45 Then we
- 1:14will hear a couple of minutes from Mitch Holtis.
- 1:18He's not available to join us Live Today as the team is
- 1:20travelling to Arizona where they will play tomorrow night.
- 1:24Chiefs about a three 3 1/2 point favorite as they will play their
- 1:27starters. That, by the way, will be one of
- 1:30the questions that comes up in the chicken coop giveaway.
- 1:33We'll do that after we hear from Mitch about 10 minutes or so
- 1:36before 1:00, give you an opportunity to win a either a
- 1:40$50.00 gift certificate from the chicken coop or 20 wings.
- 1:43You know the drill. If you haven't played in the
- 1:45last 30 days, you're eligible to do so and we'll give you the cue
- 1:48to call here. All coming up, about 1451240512
- 1:5350 somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 1:55Travis Hines covers Iowa State for the Des Moines Register.
- 1:58He will be in Dublin. So we'll talk to Travis Hines,
- 2:02recap the week with the Iris Iowa State related topics and do
- 2:07that at 1:00. And then Mike Palm off to Vegas.
- 2:11We will go. I'll get the latest on comings
- 2:15and goings in Vegas with point spreads, etcetera, get they
- 2:18updated on the numbers as far as the contest.
- 2:20And by the way, if you want to get kind of a feel for what
- 2:24Survivor means on any given Sunday, this is the second
- 2:29straight year that the camera crews have been at Circa over
- 2:33the football season on Sundays. Last year to kind of chronicle
- 2:36the ups and downs, the sweats, the highs and lows.
- 2:39And it's a really good series. Admittedly, I've not got to this
- 2:43year's, but last year's was very well done.
- 2:45I will get to it. But if you want to just see what
- 2:48we're talking about and just kind of the the ebbs and flows
- 2:52and what goes into a massive contest, it's going to be of $20
- 2:56million in Survivor this year. Maybe a tad short, maybe a tad
- 2:59more, but somewhere around that number. vsin.com is where you
- 3:03can find it on. It's on YouTube.
- 3:05You said yesterday, Trent. Yes, on the V sin page.
- 3:07On the V sin page at YouTube, so on on their Twitter account,
- 3:10etcetera. On circus Twitter account, I'm
- 3:12guessing you can find it there as well or certainly be directed
- 3:15to the right spot. Trump will make some plays of
- 3:18his plays of the day before we turn things over to the boys at
- 3:22the fair. Coming up at 2 off the bench
- 3:25with Sean and Lucas. So kind of a light night in
- 3:27sports Last night certainly was baseball wise.
- 3:30There was only one night game, so I found myself on the NFL
- 3:34Network watching the Ravens and the Colts.
- 3:37Well done. Thank you.
- 3:38By the way, that was a money line play, he said.
- 3:41Tell the points I don't need them.
- 3:42Let's go. Plus 250.
- 3:44Plus 250, so nice hit on the on the Ravens.
- 3:47It was it was a fun game. I watched most of it last night.
- 3:51Higgins getting involved late in the game tackling machine that
- 3:54he was in Iowa City and on the Big 10 stops in his career
- 3:58certainly seems to carry that over, at least in preseason game
- 4:01#1 you know what's stands out to me as I watch him on the field?
- 4:04Just the size difference. He's little, isn't he is?
- 4:06Yes. It didn't strike me in the Big
- 4:0910 last year. No, it for whatever reason right
- 4:12in shrink. No, not at all.
- 4:13But the other dudes at that level, they're just.
- 4:16Both him and Nick Jackson both. Him and Nick Jackson, bigger,
- 4:19stronger, faster at that level. And Higgins was, you know, doing
- 4:23what he always does, sticking his nose in there, getting
- 4:25involved and making some plays in the game last night.
- 4:27Did you watch much of that game? Little bit flipped it on,
- 4:30watched the beginning so I was actually here until.
- 4:33Doing what? Football season, dude, I got
- 4:36work to do. Oh yeah.
- 4:37High school Scotch what not next week the following.
- 4:39A couple weeks away from that, but yeah, I mean, I got 20
- 4:41proposals to put together and trying to set up meetings and
- 4:44all that stuff. So it's a busy time.
- 4:45So I was well, right where I was where he saw me when got in the.
- 4:49Prize You beat me to work this. Morning I This is the time.
- 4:51Well, you took your wife's Mustang, so yes, you beat a lot
- 4:54of people to work with that bad boy.
- 4:55My God. You got to see that thing in
- 4:57action. My God I ran over a lady who saw
- 4:59that leaving TVA couple weeks. Ago, it was not going to be
- 5:02pretty. No, not at all.
- 5:03But yeah, so it's a busy time. So I had it on, but I really
- 5:06wasn't watching closely. It was a perfect night, though.
- 5:09No baseball to speed, none the outside of my Marlins bed.
- 5:12They're up 6/2. Oh, did you blow that?
- 5:14Yeah. 8-6 yeah, cool. Yeah, regular's easy.
- 5:17Yeah but 2 + 250 on A on the NFL pre season got you.
- 5:20Got you. Well, yeah, got back on the good
- 5:22side of things. But yeah, overall, watching it,
- 5:26you know, Anthony Richardson, I just wanted to see him help, you
- 5:29know, just. Go ahead and block that dude off
- 5:31the edge. Yeah, I mean, he got jacked up.
- 5:34That would have been, I mean, remember back in the day, ESPN,
- 5:37was that that guy? I think it was. 90 yeah, I think
- 5:39it was a former kid from Michigan yeah, coming off the
- 5:42edge just untouched, unblocked. Yeah yeah, yeah, and just just
- 5:46buried them so we'll see where it goes.
- 5:48Daniel Jones may have won the starting job last night for you
- 5:51fantasy players will it cult quarterback going fantasy
- 5:54drafts. I guess you probably got to at
- 5:55some. Point right?
- 5:56You don't have to, no. I mean, it depends on your
- 5:58league and the way it's set up, but you're probably not.
- 6:02No, it's a back, back, back up in case both of your guys are on
- 6:04buys that week. If don't do that, just wait.
- 6:08Don't don't wait to waste a roster spot with that, go
- 6:12forward. Yes, go for the 7th running back
- 6:15or wide receiver on your roster and hope that you can hit a
- 6:18lottery ticket there. Do not sit until week 12 because
- 6:21you're going to need a quarterback that we just see
- 6:23who's available at that time and go back.
- 6:25After week 11 and pick somebody up for that week, I guess.
- 6:28Is there any hope at all for Anthony Richardson?
- 6:30Is it just done? You know, I watched the Denver
- 6:32game, that was the only time I saw the Colts play last year and
- 6:35and he made a couple of just head scratchingly bad, bad
- 6:38throws. But there were sometimes, but
- 6:41you know, I kind of felt like that about other quarterbacks in
- 6:44the past. But you know what?
- 6:44You can't have the amount of bad, you can't you, you have to
- 6:48be. I mean, the, the margin fair is
- 6:50so slim that if you make a couple of mistakes, it's, you
- 6:53know, you maybe get by with one. But when they start to add up as
- 6:56they did in that game, no, I don't.
- 6:58I'm starting to think that this was a wasted pick.
- 7:00And I thought it was going to be a good player and throw the ball
- 7:02a mile, you know, that cuts through the air.
- 7:05You can hear it when it's when it's in the air.
- 7:06And that always moves a quarterback up in my book.
- 7:09But anyways. Great athlete.
- 7:11Yeah, he is not a very good. Quarterback.
- 7:13No, I don't think he is. So I watched what I thought was
- 7:16a really good quarterback last night.
- 7:18I can't get enough of this series any given Saturday.
- 7:21I know you'd like it. Absolutely love it.
- 7:24It just kind of backs up my feelings toward that sport and
- 7:31it it's, I mean, I, I still think the NHL by an inch is my
- 7:34favorite sport, but if The Jets didn't come home, it would have
- 7:37been the college football. It just, it's the one thing I
- 7:40wish I feel like I missed out on by not growing up in here in
- 7:46Iowa in particular or anywhere, because it just means so much to
- 7:51people that go to those. I understand it and thank God
- 7:54for it because we wouldn't have jobs without it.
- 7:57I don't believe, I truly believe the college sports move the
- 8:00needle here, but it's just it just kind of magnifies watching
- 8:04that series and what it means and the pressure on these
- 8:07coaches. And I'm not saying there's more
- 8:09pressure on SEC coaches than there is on any other power for
- 8:13conference coaches and just the players.
- 8:15But watching Pavia and watching Nick Saban when he was asked
- 8:18about, you know, road stops in the SES, is there any place
- 8:22that's easy to win on their own? Well, yeah, Vanderbilt.
- 8:25And then to watch Alabama go into Vandy as a three touchdown
- 8:29favorite and lose last year. I mean, I know what I knew what
- 8:32the outcome was going to be. Yes, right, right.
- 8:34These games have taken place yet I found myself in the tear
- 8:37rundown. But just because what it must
- 8:39have meant at the time to be a fan of Vanderbilt or a player or
- 8:45just, you know, the the brunt of joke after joke after joke and
- 8:49finally able to slew Goliath. And not just beat any number one
- 8:54team, beat Alabama. Beat Bama, right, Bama.
- 8:57Beat Bama who just just toys with you, who laughs at you.
- 9:01When you went to center field for the coin flip, they were
- 9:03laughing at the Vanderbilt players.
- 9:06Clark Lee, a kid that grew up in National.
- 9:08Not root for him. Grew up going to games as GM
- 9:11their buddies and that was general manager and they're
- 9:14working together to build this thing up the way that they
- 9:18Vanderbilt Diego Pavia was like this he was this very deep down
- 9:23if you were into gambling Twitter he was the guy that was
- 9:26talked about a ton when he was at New Mexico State.
- 9:28Here's this little guy, he was arrested, 59, but he's at New
- 9:30Mexico State, right? But you watched him play where?
- 9:33Was he before that New Mexico School of Mines or something?
- 9:35It was he has a junior college and that's why he's hoping for
- 9:38more eligibility that those JUCO years won't will not count
- 9:42against him paid. Young man, I hope I hope it
- 9:44works out for you. Because it's not going to happen
- 9:45at the next level. No, it's no. 59 quarterbacks?
- 9:48No, not going to happen. There, he doesn't have a strong
- 9:50enough arm, Fisher. I mean, you love his, you love
- 9:52his gamesmanship, but boy, the series train.
- 9:55You know what? I'm I'm going to give Hard
- 9:59Knocks another chance on Tuesday.
- 10:01Yes, they get one more. They get one more, but I'll have
- 10:06I'll, I'll have any, any given Saturday cranked up on the iPad.
- 10:09If it's if it's kind of letting me down a little bit because
- 10:13this is so much better. The behind the scenes stuff and
- 10:16the fact that they're moving throughout the SEC.
- 10:19Oh, it's so I wish the big 10, I wish the Big 12 would do
- 10:22something like this. Oh, I would be.
- 10:23Oh, you didn't love it? Especially people who wish we
- 10:27wouldn't talk about it because it doesn't move their needle.
- 10:31But then they would see what it what what we talked about when
- 10:34it was the SEC in the spotlight. It is so well done.
- 10:37What who did it? This isn't a Omaha production,
- 10:40is it? It's not Peyton Manning's
- 10:42company. I mean, it's on Netflix.
- 10:44So I don't know if that if it's Netflix production, whoever's
- 10:47behind it. And was the availability the
- 10:51teams were able to provide the access to.
- 10:56I mean, I don't would would Matt Campbell do it?
- 11:00No, I don't think he would. I mean he would have to be
- 11:02forced. Would Kirk Ference do it?
- 11:04Yes, he would now. He would.
- 11:06He would now. 20 years ago? No.
- 11:08Not a shot in hell, no. McCartney would, yes.
- 11:11McCartney would. Yes.
- 11:12He absolutely. Would yeah, that carnival
- 11:13Barker, he would have been the 1st.
- 11:15But you know what? And I'll always give him credit
- 11:16for this because he, he knew that his program needed
- 11:21attention and not bad attention. Mm hmm.
- 11:23And he was willing to do whatever, take on whatever radio
- 11:25show, whatever time, as long as you want.
- 11:28And he would always, you know, at the at the end of the
- 11:31interview, lie and say, God, I love your show.
- 11:33Guys, never lose the door show ever.
- 11:36Dad, love your show. Yeah, I just got a kick out of
- 11:38that. But but Ference would now I
- 11:40don't think Campbell would be good.
- 11:41Goddess, good TV and I can't wait to watch somebody said a a
- 11:46a tweet, a tweet to us earlier and said wait till you see
- 11:50episode 5. I don't even know what it.
- 11:51Is yeah, I don't. I have to look that far ahead to
- 11:53see which one that one is phenomenal.
- 11:55And Arkansas is good too 'cause we both like Sam Pittman and the
- 11:58pressure on him to to win and coming up with the money to the
- 12:02buyout anyways, so. The production of this it comes
- 12:06from a place called Box to Box Films.
- 12:09It means nothing to me. Same until I started reading a
- 12:12little bit more. These are the ones that put
- 12:14together the documentary Inside the PGA Tour Full swing.
- 12:18I got a ton of buzz. I watched a few episodes.
- 12:20I did not see that it was good. You will.
- 12:22Netflix production as well. It was on Netflix, yes.
- 12:26Here's one that might hit you up because you like the production
- 12:29you saw so far. 3 episodes. It's unbelievable.
- 12:31How about this documentary that they did race for the Crown?
- 12:34The high stakes world of Triple Crown racing.
- 12:37Yeah. I think I've how many episodes
- 12:40are there? I don't.
- 12:40Know I just said just have. Some time I think I might have
- 12:42watched it, but this is unbelievable.
- 12:44Yeah, they've done Tour de France, they've done inside MLS
- 12:47and this latest one inside the SEC.
- 12:50Well, for my money, that's as good as it's going to be.
- 12:52Speaking of horse racing, if you're out at Prairie Metal,
- 12:54stop by and say hi to me. This.
- 12:55Weekend. Oh yeah, working hard this.
- 12:57Weekend hard? Well, the track handicapper, his
- 13:00name is John Hernandez. I know he shows up on on Sean's
- 13:03shows periodically with Lucas. His daughter's getting married.
- 13:06What was he going to say? No, right?
- 13:07Yep. No, I'm not going to help you
- 13:10out. Here, figure it out.
- 13:11Not with me. Not with me.
- 13:13I'm going to stay home and do nothing this weekend again, as I
- 13:15always do. So congratulations to John,
- 13:18whose daughter's getting married.
- 13:19But I'll be I don't think they've been in the paddock.
- 13:21She's going to be a little warm. The old man might play pull a
- 13:23little. Some AC.
- 13:25Yeah, a little card and then do it inside anyways.
- 13:28So a really good baseball weekend, Trent.
- 13:31I think it's highlighted at least tonight by the Dodgers and
- 13:34the Blue Jays. And I say that for no other
- 13:36reason than the pitching match up because you don't see very
- 13:39many of these, right? This is an all timer.
- 13:42Max Scherzer going up against Clayton Kershaw.
- 13:44Kershaw was really good in his last start.
- 13:47Scherzer was it was good in his last start.
- 13:50You know what kind of is personified when you watch some
- 13:53of these guys who've been around for a long time?
- 13:56We think that they've been as good as they've, you know, we've
- 14:00seen in some time, we may never see another pitcher win 300
- 14:05games. Justin Verlander is the active
- 14:08leader in Major League in wins this year in the majors, he's at
- 14:12263 and Scherzer is 218. I mean, that's fifty wins.
- 14:17Not quite, but you get my point. But but there's no way Verlander
- 14:21other things are going to get to 265.
- 14:24But we may never see another pitcher win 300 games in his
- 14:27career. We might not see a guy get to
- 14:29250. We may not.
- 14:30After the guys that we may not that have wins already under
- 14:34their belt, belt, when you go through and you look at some
- 14:36guys that have been around for a long time, they got 152 career
- 14:40wins like. This, this, these two dudes
- 14:43here, they're going to face off against each other tonight are
- 14:45two and three. Scherzer has 218, Kershaw 217.
- 14:50Speaking of that, Garrett Cole is 4th on the list at.
- 14:53At how many is he? Is he hit 200 yet?
- 14:56153 yeah, he's 34, by the way, and he's coming off another
- 15:01major injury. Let's go a little bit.
- 15:04Let's try to find somebody in their 20s.
- 15:06How about? How about?
- 15:07And find ski well, Ski doesn't win games.
- 15:09This team sucks. Exactly, I'm looking for my
- 15:12first guy in their 20s still. That's on a good team.
- 15:15Just that is in their 20s period.
- 15:17That's the end of the conversation.
- 15:19In their 20s. I have gone now 40 deep.
- 15:23I found somebody. Oh what teams he play for the
- 15:25Brew Crew. Who is it?
- 15:28Freddy Peralta Freddy Peralta is 29.
- 15:31He is the first guy to show up in this list with how many
- 15:34active wins? 66 career victories?
- 15:39Nobody's getting to 200 again. Give me the list of 300 recent
- 15:43three hundreds. Is it on there?
- 15:45No, this is just an active list. This is just guys active career.
- 15:47Well, we know that there's nobody on that list, but it's
- 15:51been a while, isn't it? Been a while since we've had a
- 15:53300 win pitch Maddox. Yeah, maybe.
- 15:56I'm going to Google it. I worked their Google machine
- 15:58too. All right, you get that going.
- 16:00I'm just, I'm baffled with 66 victories leading the 20 year
- 16:04olds right now. And I believe, oh, we also got
- 16:09Logan Wave, who's 28 and he's got 65 in his career.
- 16:12That's it. Everybody else is 30 years old
- 16:14or older. Lucas Giolito, he's got 69 in
- 16:18his career. Let's go for some veterans that
- 16:21have been around for a long time.
- 16:23How many career wins does Rich Hill have?
- 16:29I don't know, 90 does he Not even.
- 16:32You could have said 150, you could have said 42.
- 16:35Wouldn't be surprised, all right?
- 16:36Here's the list of guys that people would know.
- 16:38I'm not going to give you a PUD Glavine, who pitched in the
- 16:401800s. Sounds like my uncle.
- 16:43Rodger Clements, 354. He achieved that milestone in
- 16:462003. Steve Carlton, the lefty in
- 16:501983. Some of you remember him, of
- 16:52course. Nolan Ryan, Don Sutton, Phil.
- 16:54Necro Tom from Seaver. Where's Maddox?
- 16:59He's on the list. I know he's got it. 355 Maddox.
- 17:02He's one head of of, of Roger Clements, Tom Glavin, and the
- 17:12last guy to do it, if I'm looking at this right, was Randy
- 17:16Johnson 2009, 2009. He's he fund his final game.
- 17:23That was game #303 we won't see another one.
- 17:27We will not see a 300 game winner.
- 17:30Nope, we might not see a 200 game winner.
- 17:32You. Will hear from Tom Keikert when
- 17:34he joins us next. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 17:36Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 17:38Network. I'm Mary Condon, welcome back,
- 17:46Iowa Sports Radio Network. Still to come this hour, we will
- 17:49hear from Mitch Holtis, his two or three minute report on the
- 17:53Chiefs as they board the plane here to Arizona, take on the
- 17:56Cardinals. That'll come up here in about
- 17:581215 minutes or so, Give you an opportunity to win some grub
- 18:02from the chicken coop as well. Three locations throughout
- 18:04central Iowa. Let's talk some Hawks.
- 18:06Tom Caker joins us as we are about an hour more than an hour
- 18:12away from the start of media day.
- 18:13Kirk Ference meets the media 1st and then off they go to talk to
- 18:17players. Hello, Tom Keckert, How are you?
- 18:20I'm doing well, just pulled into Big Grove here, going to have.
- 18:25A nice little. Little bite to eat with my my my
- 18:28friend pet anger before we go over to media day.
- 18:31That's awesome. Keep him in line.
- 18:33I mean, he can't be slugging beers before he goes to media
- 18:35day. He's a media member now.
- 18:36Come on, anger. I know, I know, I know, I know.
- 18:39So we're just we're just kind of chilling out.
- 18:42Yeah, that's good, good. Good to see.
- 18:44Well, I guess what, what, what's the question that lingers in
- 18:48your mind, Tom is as you know, maybe Ference will address it or
- 18:52not. I'm sure you'll have an
- 18:53opportunity to ask them what's the, what's the one question
- 18:56that that you want would like to hear maybe a little clarity on
- 19:00maybe a little insight too. What's what's kind of out there
- 19:02for you, boy? That's a great question.
- 19:06Last year it was like the suspension stuff or whatever.
- 19:09Yeah, you know, it's a little wild.
- 19:11Still the wildest thing, but yeah, I would guess probably
- 19:18open jobs. What job I know he'll have, as
- 19:21always, his pat answer. Boy, you know, every job is open
- 19:25really. But you know, if Logan Jones
- 19:27loses it boys being it'd be something, you know, just he
- 19:30kind of dances around it. But what's the corner
- 19:33competition? I mean, we all saw the video.
- 19:35So, you know, and they strategically put out a positive
- 19:40video for for for Sean Lee the the next day, which was nice of
- 19:45them to do. But I think defensive back, you
- 19:49know, in the interview he had on the the fight for Iowa podcast
- 19:55thing that they did the other day with Dolph, he mentioned
- 19:59defensive tackle being up in the air.
- 20:00I'm curious about that position because he said Jeremiah Pittman
- 20:03still done healthy. So you know who is, who's going
- 20:07to get reps there besides Aaron Graves and then.
- 20:11You kind of mentioned linebacker, so I'm curious about
- 20:14what's going on there too. So I think there's there's some
- 20:17stuff mainly on defense and then, you know, the offense less
- 20:20tackle. I'm curious about.
- 20:23I haven't seen and again, we get these little clips and we look
- 20:27at the blankets. There's a pruder film, but but
- 20:31it's is, you know, I haven't seen both Stevens in anything
- 20:37and there's been a little bit of rumbling that maybe one of the
- 20:40offensive lineman is dinged up and so maybe we'll get some
- 20:44clarity there too. Oh, boy.
- 20:46And as we look at them tomorrow, of course, open practice, the
- 20:49only real look that we're going to get at this team, you know, I
- 20:52was just hopeful more than anything.
- 20:53Well. Monday Big 10 networks there.
- 20:55Right, but the one that we actually get, not the ones that
- 20:57the big 10 network and cut and dice, we get our eyes on
- 21:00something and I just want to see five offense alignment out
- 21:03there. Well, Stevens is out and you're
- 21:05moving people over. Maybe Bryce George is then
- 21:07playing guard instead of tackle and it just it's going to lead
- 21:10to well, what we do anyway. A lot more speculation.
- 21:13It doesn't look like tomorrow, at least with the offensive
- 21:15line. Then we're probably probably
- 21:16going to get many answers. Tom, is that fair?
- 21:18Yeah, I think I, I'm curious what he's going to say about any
- 21:22potential people missing or no guys are just temporarily out or
- 21:28if it's long term. I kind of my sense is just
- 21:31talking to a few people that if anybody's out, it's, it's more
- 21:35short term than long term and it's just kind of being careful
- 21:39and camp. And so I, I don't suspect that
- 21:43there's any alarm bells yet, but frankly, probably good for guys
- 21:48like Clayton Jones to get. I'm with the ones, you know, or
- 21:52maybe my Solinsky gets a shot there or, you know, Bryce
- 21:56George, somebody like that. I think they'll be OK.
- 22:00But it's just it's interesting what's going, you know, just
- 22:03because we read into everything these these days because we
- 22:06don't have access. So we're looking at every little
- 22:09grain of of video to to to find out if we can figure something
- 22:13else out. I'm I'm anxious to read the
- 22:16reports on Mark Gronowski, you know, see him for the first time
- 22:19and see how the what the receivers are doing.
- 22:22If he's you know, if he maybe is picked out a favorite or
- 22:26something, maybe a favorite target at this point.
- 22:28I'm anxious to see him. What happened to McNamara?
- 22:31What did he get hurt in this practice two years ago?
- 22:34Right. It was right.
- 22:35Two years ago, Oh boy, took off in the middle of practice and
- 22:40went down in the heap and everybody went.
- 22:43There was a collective groan, groan like, oh, no.
- 22:47And then, you know, they it was obviously hindered him early on
- 22:52and then, you know, eventually gets hurt again.
- 22:54And it's just, yeah. Those were the days it did not
- 23:00go well. The Iowa quarterback position
- 23:02since Nate Stanley left this and you know, I although you know
- 23:07what? I'm with you.
- 23:10Say it. Say it.
- 23:12Wasn't terrible. He wasn't.
- 23:14He got worse and then he got hurt and and then it was just
- 23:19sort of got messy. And he answered every single
- 23:21question. I give him a hell of a lot of
- 23:23credit for that. He did.
- 23:24He stood in there and took all it took.
- 23:26Every AB absolutely stood in there.
- 23:29Better. Than Kate McNamara running away
- 23:32from the team and quitting. Yeah, Fairpoint and nobody will
- 23:34ever commits me that he did not quit on that team a year ago.
- 23:37That's where Spencer Petrus gets credit, the football side of
- 23:40things. Hard to do, hard to do.
- 23:42Well, we're into here and now, you know, one thing that I've, I
- 23:45guess maybe stumbled upon here in the last week or so talking
- 23:48about Gronowski and Tom, as you know, I have my daily podcast
- 23:51and we're looking for content locked on Hawkins every single
- 23:55day. So sometimes you're repeating
- 23:58yourself doing that every single day, no?
- 23:59Way. Really.
- 24:00Talking Gronowski, though, you know what's the running ability?
- 24:03I went back and watched a it was like a condensed version of a
- 24:05full game. It was like cut down to 30
- 24:07minutes and watching him in the game, I think he only ran it
- 24:10like 10-11 times. But it's not just he's physical.
- 24:14We knew that he's a big dude. He's got some wiggle to him.
- 24:17I I think the running ability just as a whole, maybe we forgot
- 24:22about her, has been unrepresentative and, and coming
- 24:24off that shoulder injury, I guess that might be a question
- 24:26too. Is he ready to take that
- 24:28pounding now physically? Because that's one of his
- 24:30stronger attributes, running the football.
- 24:33I think if you're going to ask Tim Lester how much he wants
- 24:36Mark Granowski running, it's going to be not much.
- 24:40But I think if you ask Granowski, because we did like,
- 24:44yeah, I'll go get I'm, you know, if that first reads not there,
- 24:47I'm willing to talking under my shoulder and get those 3 or 4
- 24:51yards and I need to get on 3rd down and short to get the first
- 24:54down and get the chains moving again.
- 24:56So I think he's more than willing to do that.
- 25:00I think there might be a little bit of a tug of war with him and
- 25:04Tim Lester, but I don't think Lester's opposed to it.
- 25:07I've, you know, I've thrown out the old bridal Leonard
- 25:09comparison since since he arrived.
- 25:12I think that's an apartment comparison.
- 25:14But then I looked, I was like, wait, how much did Riley Leonard
- 25:18run? So I wrote a piece this week
- 25:20about the expectations this year statistically for for Gronowski.
- 25:25Ryan Leonard ran for 900 yards last year.
- 25:27I was like holy cow, Iowa hasn't had a guy run over 400 since
- 25:31Brad Banks had 4/20. 3 Has it been that long?
- 25:35And and Gronowski averaged just about it was 397 as last three
- 25:40years at SBSU. So I think that's probably a
- 25:45realistic number for him is around 400.
- 25:47And if he did that, that would be boy, that would be a positive
- 25:50for the Iowa offense. And just to have a guy who can
- 25:52extend plays. He saw that one clip of him
- 25:56rolling out and throwing on the run when when the last time we
- 25:58saw that confidently done by an Iowa quarterback.
- 26:02It's been it's been a minute. It's been a family probably
- 26:05since that was really an executed play and he hits, you
- 26:08know, Weege on the sidelines and perfect spot.
- 26:11And I, I, I think I think we're in for some, some good times
- 26:16with this quarterback. I really do.
- 26:17I think he's, I think nationally he's going to get some talk
- 26:22fairly early, especially if they go to Ames and win and he plays
- 26:25well there. You mentioned Kaden Weichen,
- 26:27obviously back as a kick returner, punt returner after he
- 26:30what he did a season to go. He's on all the watch list, as
- 26:32you'd anticipate, but in the spring we heard one of the ways
- 26:35that he was going to come back or was assurances that they were
- 26:38going to try to use him at least a little bit more offensively.
- 26:42A wide receiver room, though, that has Reese Vanderzee and
- 26:44Jacob Gill and healthy Seth Anderson and Sam Phillips coming
- 26:47in out of Chattanooga and Howard and KJ Parker, who we've heard
- 26:50are there going to be many reps available for him.
- 26:52What have you heard about his fall practice and if they're
- 26:55going to find a role for Weegin in the offense?
- 26:58Yeah, I think he's been really good.
- 27:00Parker's been really good. Vanderzee obviously saw the
- 27:03video highlight of him. He's been he's been solid.
- 27:07You know, Kirk admitted in the the thing with golf, that's the
- 27:10first couple days Mark was a little shaky, you know, just
- 27:13kind of shaking from the rust off.
- 27:15And and that would make sense. I mean, he hasn't been out there
- 27:18in 1111 since the end of the South Dakota state season.
- 27:22So it, you know, he's got a little rust, didn't do spring
- 27:24ball. So he's stepping up a little bit
- 27:27here and and, you know, and now he's he's adjusted and I think
- 27:32pretty comfortable offensively and, and developing that
- 27:35chemistry. You know, he went on that trip
- 27:37with, I think it was Trent, you'll have to come in.
- 27:40I think it was Gil Parker, Phillips and Ostrenka I think
- 27:45were the guys that went with. But was it Texas?
- 27:48OK. Yeah, with, with to work with
- 27:51Jeff Christensen. Oh, sure, yeah.
- 27:54Of all people, Yeah. Really.
- 27:55The Jeff Christensen? Yeah.
- 27:57Of all people, Jeff Christensen. Yeah.
- 27:59Holy cow. Can't shake them.
- 28:00You can't shake them. You know, you used the word
- 28:03expectations earlier. Tom is this, and I hate to say
- 28:06it, phrase the question this way because I don't think that the
- 28:10the expectations were unfair when it came to Xavier Wamp.
- 28:12I mean, Trent, you said you ever seen a player like this in high
- 28:15school? No.
- 28:15And you've covered high school football for a long time.
- 28:17He covered as much found as anybody I'd I think.
- 28:20Both sides of the ball and and did so effectively.
- 28:25What, what kind of years do you expect from him or is this the
- 28:28year that Tom, that he comes close to those lofty
- 28:31expectations? I think so I, you know, just
- 28:34talking to him the spring, it's felt like playing strong safety
- 28:39was like asking him to play left-handed and he just was
- 28:42never comfortable with it to the level that that you would hope
- 28:46he would be. And, and now he's, he's at 3 and
- 28:50he feels comfortable and, and I think we're going to see a
- 28:54really good year from him. I think he's going to have, you
- 28:57know, 5 or 6 interceptions and, and I think it's going to make
- 29:01some big plays for the Iowa defense this year.
- 29:04And, and yeah, I, I think he and Enteringer potentially we'll see
- 29:09where Enteringer ends up if it's strong safety or cash, but I
- 29:14think that back end is going to be pretty fun to watch,
- 29:17especially thin trainers back there.
- 29:19Full circles. We started talking a little bit
- 29:21about the linebackers and one thing that I heard is feels like
- 29:25Jade Harrell is going to be that guy in the middle.
- 29:26Don't sleep on Montgomery. That was something I was told
- 29:28the other night, which I found interesting.
- 29:30But that aside, do you anticipate, I mean they've moved
- 29:34to, it's not full time, but they go cash what 70% of the time,
- 29:3880% of the time that they're going to rely on that even more
- 29:42because of the questions that linebacker that they like
- 29:44Luckmer, they obviously like the other two safeties we just
- 29:47talked about with Enteringer and Wampa that we see even more cash
- 29:50this season. You know, I asked Phil this
- 29:55summer, I said how much did you guys run cash last year?
- 29:59And he said 80% of the time, I don't know.
- 30:03I don't know if they can go any higher and then and, you know,
- 30:07unless they did it full time, but I think it's it's probably
- 30:12something where they're going to go cash about 80% of the time.
- 30:15And, and I think that's the way they like it.
- 30:19I think that's the way college football is going in.
- 30:22And they'll, you know, there'll be some teams or some situations
- 30:26or third and short, they'll bring in an extra linebacker and
- 30:30Rex Ross will get some time. But yeah, I'm really curious
- 30:33about the middle linebacker. The Montgomery thing was made
- 30:36sense too, because I, you know, that video clip the other day, I
- 30:39saw Montgomery was out there, middle linebacker.
- 30:41So I think he's given a little push right now.
- 30:46I know they're super high on excited about Preston Reese too,
- 30:49so that's another guy to watch. And we'll watch it and we'll
- 30:52read it about it at hawkeyereport.com, part of on
- 30:55three media day coverage today and the Kids Day tomorrow.
- 31:01And away we go. Tom Caker, you got a busy
- 31:03weekend ahead of you. Tom, thanks for doing this.
- 31:05We'll keep up to date at hawkeyereport.com.
- 31:08OK. Thanks guys.
- 31:09Thank you, Tom. Appreciate you coming on.
- 31:10Talk to you next week. Take care.
- 31:13Tom Kakert hawkeyereport.com Bennett Sturtz got engaged.
- 31:16Yes, saw that. Can I ask a question Sure it's
- 31:19not just related to him? Because it was.
- 31:21If you've seen the picture, you saw where he got engaged.
- 31:23Beautiful lake. Yeah, Lake McBride.
- 31:25Lake McBride's nobody around his fiance kind of shocked.
- 31:30Yes, yes. He's down.
- 31:33Does the photographer 10 feet away not kind of tip it off?
- 31:36So I. You get my point.
- 31:38Yes, I I've seen this done similar.
- 31:40Millions of times, yes. And.
- 31:42You're all alone except for the photographer.
- 31:44Well, normally the photographer is hiding somewhere.
- 31:47Really. Yes, that is normally how it's
- 31:50done. Now it's not possible at all
- 31:52places. The guy or the gal with a big
- 31:53camera around their neck? Yeah.
- 31:55Well, and it doesn't anymore. It doesn't have to be a big
- 31:57well, that's. True.
- 31:58I OK, that's showing my age. That's a fairpoint.
- 32:00Come on, old Miller. Yeah, that's.
- 32:02But it just cracks me up all the time.
- 32:04Just the They're so surprised. Except 10 feet away, away from
- 32:08me, there's that person with the camera.
- 32:09Like my cousin, he proposed to his wife in Central Park in New
- 32:12York. Well, that's easy because
- 32:14there's. Millions of people.
- 32:15Right, right. Yeah, That's a little bit
- 32:16different. And he did the whole thing and
- 32:18he had the. So where's the lake that he got
- 32:20engaged over? Bio City?
- 32:21Yeah, but what's it called? Lake McBride.
- 32:23McBride, It's awesome. Is it deep?
- 32:25Yes. We used to really flip jump in
- 32:27there all the time, yeah. Really.
- 32:28Can you fish? Yeah.
- 32:29I'm sure Orville Reservoir and cool area over there.
- 32:34There are other things outside of central Iowa, no, in our
- 32:37great state. Come on.
- 32:39I know you like to go past Iowa City as you cross the border to
- 32:41Illinois and go antiquing. Antiquing.
- 32:45And a few other things. We'll take a time out, we'll
- 32:47come back and we're going to hear from Mitch Holtis, but it
- 32:50just cracks me up. And I'm not picking on Bennett
- 32:51Sturtz, just. But it's just a beautiful lake.
- 32:55If you're clear the scene, who is this person that keeps
- 32:58following Mountain? You know, and it's just you and,
- 33:01and there's this other person with the camera.
- 33:03Walking up the trail, why is this person following nearly 15
- 33:06feet behind us? Best of luck to you and your and
- 33:10your fiance, Bennett, and have a good year.
- 33:12And on the hardwood, I'm guessing he will.
- 33:14Miller and Conn, We'll come back.
- 33:15Hear from Mitch Holtis, the voice of the Chiefs daily.
- 33:18Chiefs training camp reports on tape today with Mitch.
- 33:21That's next. We're on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 33:23Network. All right, welcome back, Miller
- 33:26and Condon. 1st 4 callers. If you'd like to play for the
- 33:29chicken coop giveaway, now is your opportunity to do so.
- 33:32Three locations in central Iowa, 515-284-5966, 515-284-5966 Well,
- 33:40we line you up. Here's Mitch Holtis as daily
- 33:42Chiefs training camp report. Papa John's Central Iowa sponsor
- 33:46that chicken coop right now. 515-284-5966 Here's Mitch.
- 33:50It's a travel day today for the Chiefs as we all head to Phoenix
- 33:53and play preseason game #1 tomorrow, tonight against the
- 33:56Cardinals. Here's your checklist for things
- 33:58to listen for and watch for in this game.
- 34:01One, obviously the offensive line, especially rookie left
- 34:04tackle #71 Josh Simmons and 2nd year left guard who's moved
- 34:08inside number 76 Kingsley Sumatiya.
- 34:11The Cardinals have a really, really good defensive front.
- 34:14It's going to be a big test, but also pay attention throughout
- 34:16the game. The Chiefs have to find good
- 34:18depth on the offensive line, something they did not do a year
- 34:22ago. The second area to focus on is
- 34:24the red hot battle at white and receiver.
- 34:26There are 14 wide receivers in camp.
- 34:28The team will probably keep only 6 #2.
- 34:31Taekwon Thornton's been a camp darling, but how will he do
- 34:34tomorrow night in a game? And he's in a battle with kick
- 34:37returner Nico remigio #81. Remember his 63 yard kick return
- 34:41in the playoffs? A sneaky wide receiver to watch
- 34:44number 89 Jason Thornly. He looks like Otis Taylor
- 34:48wearing that number when he breaks the huddle.
- 34:50He's been spectacular this week in camp.
- 34:52Tight end, we all know about Travis Kelce and Noah Gray, but
- 34:55who's next On the defensive side?
- 34:57It's a battle for spots in the secondary.
- 34:59For example, Joshua Williams is in his fourth year.
- 35:01He's got 2 Super Bowl rings, 9 post season wins, and right now
- 35:05he's trying to play his way on the team.
- 35:08Young players will be under scrutiny like rookie cornerback
- 35:11#20 Noel Williams and #30 Christian Roland Wallace in his
- 35:15second year. Finally, pay attention to every
- 35:18kick return by both teams. The new rules tweaked this year
- 35:22are going to determine games. The Chiefs need to be stellar in
- 35:25return returns and in coverage. It's the Valley of the Sun, it's
- 35:28preseason game #1 and I'm Mitch Holtis, voice of the Chiefs.
- 35:32There is Mitch Holtis, the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, Papa
- 35:35John's Central Iowa sponsor. Those Mitch will be back with
- 35:38this next week. I look forward to a catching up
- 35:41with him and finding out what went right, what went wrong,
- 35:44etcetera, etcetera with the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 35:47He joins us every single day throughout the Chiefs training
- 35:51camp, kind of one of those rites of passage in the month of
- 35:55August. Chiefs are 3 1/2 point favorite.
- 35:57So that's going to come up in the chicken coop giveaway as we
- 36:00switch gears to the chicken coop.
- 36:01Steve and Tom, you're all set to go here.
- 36:03Trent's lining up the other two contestants as we speak.
- 36:07The tiebreaker for both of you, it's going to be Mets Brewers.
- 36:12They've got a three-game series. I don't think these two teams
- 36:14have played. They certainly haven't been in
- 36:16Milwaukee obviously since the Mets ended the Brewers season
- 36:21last year with that dramatic home run when they were down and
- 36:24as we know ended the radio career of 1.
- 36:28Bob Euchre, who sadly would pass away before the season started
- 36:32this year, Steve, Tom, Grant and Matt in that order.
- 36:36Three locations for the chicken coop, 60th and Ashworth, West
- 36:38Des Moines on Oral Labor Rd. just South of the DMAC campus
- 36:42and 12725 Meredith Drive in Urban.
- 36:46Half off wings all month long. It's extended, extended it
- 36:50through August, through all of August, half off both bonin and
- 36:53boneless wings at the chicken. That's that's, that's huge.
- 36:55And they're so good. They're my favorite wings.
- 36:58Hello Steve, How are you? Awesome.
- 37:00How are you? Guys, good.
- 37:01Scherzer versus Kershaw tonight, Jays versus the Dodgers in LA.
- 37:06Who do you want? Kershaw.
- 37:10The Cubs. Sorry, that's OK, That's all
- 37:12right. Cubs Cards three-game series in
