- 0:57Hello folks. My name's Darryl and I'm an
- 0:59alcoholic, and I'm just going to tell a little bit of my story
- 1:04and hope that it'll help someone in the long term.
- 1:08I started my drinking very young.
- 1:11I was my first drunk, was 12 years old at my sister's wedding
- 1:16and I all I really remember is being the center of attention
- 1:24for a little while and then I'm lying in the back seat of the
- 1:28family car vomiting into the gutter and my father looking
- 1:33over me with disgust. But the problem was I really
- 1:38enjoyed it and I loved the attention that I got.
- 1:41You know, I just felt at home and from there my drinking went
- 1:47on to my early teens or mid teens and then we used to go out
- 1:54with all our mates and we'd we'd buy grog on a Saturday night and
- 1:59and drink. And reflecting on that, I can
- 2:04see now that my alcoholic behaviour was already starting
- 2:08to show, where my friends would have a drink and they would go
- 2:13back and enjoy the night, where I would stay there and I would
- 2:16finish the bottle of whatever it was that we were drinking.
- 2:21And I progressed there too, My late teens where I'd finished,
- 2:27left school and got a job and left home and got a flat and and
- 2:33I'd made it, you know, I could, I could drink whenever I wanted
- 2:37to, as much as I wanted to and wasn't accountable to anybody.
- 2:41And I I then went on to my 20s and my drinking only ever
- 2:53progressed, you know, and my behaviours became unacceptable
- 3:00to to most people. I couldn't guarantee my
- 3:04behaviour and I lost a lot of family, friends, relationships
- 3:12through alcohol because I would always choose, always be given
- 3:17an ultimatum by a partner or family friend and to stop
- 3:21drinking. And I would choose to drink and
- 3:25and leave them out of my life. And then there came trouble with
- 3:30the police in my 20s, couple of DUI's, couple of urinating in
- 3:40the street, all that sort of rubbish behaviour that I carried
- 3:44on with and and you know, always in fights and and arguments in
- 3:50pubs and pubs and wherever I was drinking, I got to about 36
- 3:59years of age and my drinking had be kept progressed more.
- 4:03So I I was in more and more trouble, less and less friends
- 4:08starting to lose material things and then the judge decided that
- 4:16it probably a good idea if I went to a A.
- 4:19So at 36 years of age I went to a A and I had to do six weeks.
- 4:27So I went there and told everyone that I was an alcoholic
- 4:31and and that I was there for help.
- 4:35But that was that was only to tell.
- 4:40It was only a fast I'd I didn't. I didn't want to stop drinking.
- 4:44And I always made sure that I went to the bottle shop before I
- 4:48went to the meeting because the bottle shops were closed at 9:30
- 4:52when the meeting finished. And I'd go home and drink and
- 4:56you know and I and I'd done things like getting a sponsor
- 4:59and things like that. And we didn't live in the same
- 5:02town. And we'd I had to call him every
- 5:05day and I'd be drinking wine while I'm telling him how well
- 5:09I'm going with my sobriety and and everything was just a lie
- 5:15and I made an excuse to get out of going to a A after the court.
- 5:22The court stuff had finished and and that led me to another 10
- 5:28years of hell. And I drank harder and harder
- 5:32each time and and I just couldn't, couldn't stop.
- 5:37And I was just a top up drunk. I would get up in the morning
- 5:41and have a few wines and until I've we fell asleep and then I'd
- 5:46wake up and I'd go again and then it was just an absolute
- 5:50nightmare you know and and my drinking progressed to a stage
- 5:56where I was having seizures and the DTS in the morning and the
- 6:02vomiting and and all the rest of it and I just didn't know what
- 6:07to do. So one morning I woke up and I
- 6:14was having a few wines and and this moment of clarity came came
- 6:20to me that I needed help and I I actually made a phone call and
- 6:25and with a community health unit in the small town that I grew up
- 6:29in. And and I was put into a detox
- 6:38where I they offered me Valium to come down off alcohol and I
- 6:45and I refused to have that and and I had another seizure while
- 6:50I was in the hospital and so I had to stay another couple of
- 6:54days but during that time my caseworker was able to secure me
- 7:01a position you know rehab and on the 14th of of December 2009 I
- 7:16went into that rehab and I I didn't know what to expect I was
- 7:21full of fear and and of the unknown and it turned out to be
- 7:29the best thing that ever happened to me.
- 7:31I I ended there and I thought well I'm going to give this the
- 7:33best shot I possibly can and and I booked in there for six months
- 7:38and and done the program and and it was mandatory to do 5 AI
- 7:45meetings per per week which I did and it it didn't worry me at
- 7:51all because I'd had that taste of a a a little bit earlier in
- 7:55my life And and I went there with an open mind and and
- 8:02willingness to to listen to people and I really liked what I
- 8:08what I heard and what I seen. You know there were people there
- 8:12that were they were well spoken well dressed had good jobs had
- 8:19sobriety you know and and I I remember the first meeting that
- 8:23I went to there and I was sitting in the back row and I
- 8:27was I was still very cloudy in the mind and and shaking down
- 8:34the back with the DTS and and and this guy got up and said
- 8:39yeah keep coming back it just gets better.
- 8:42And I thought to myself at the time, I can remember thinking
- 8:45that this blokes, this blokes must be a rocket scientist, say,
- 8:49I couldn't get any worse, you know.
- 8:52But I kept going back and it did keep getting better and better.
- 8:55And and during my stay at Freeman House, I, I got involved
- 9:03in a A. And I I wondered what these
- 9:06people had, you know, to hear people that were 30 years, 20
- 9:11years, even 10 years sober, you know, was amazing to me because
- 9:15I I couldn't go 10 minutes without a drink.
- 9:18And I just hung in there and I hung on to the people that were
- 9:23there who loved me back to life. And they were always welcoming,
- 9:28welcoming. And they showed me certain
- 9:32suggested certain things that I do to try and maintain sobriety.
- 9:36And I done those things and I was able to stay sober in this
- 9:44town where the rehab was. And and I thought to myself,
- 9:49well, this is pretty good, I'm going to hang out here for a
- 9:51while. So I ended up doing five years
- 9:54in Armidale just to get the strength that I needed, you
- 10:00know. And and I'd done that through a
- 10:02lot of AA meetings, talking to a lot of Alcoholics about how they
- 10:08recovered. You know like it's it was it was
- 10:15a really truly inspiring time in my life and I just kept going
- 10:21and going and going and life got easier and life got better and I
- 10:25didn't have to tell lies anymore and I had money in my pocket and
- 10:29and other people were just so so beautiful and loving and and
- 10:38from there I I left the rehab after six months and I got a job
- 10:45and held that down and that with no problems.
- 10:48I didn't have to ring up telling lies about why I wasn't coming
- 10:52in today or what had happened in my life.
- 10:54I think I told someone couple of employees in the past that my my
- 10:59mother had died three times and and that probably didn't go over
- 11:03too well but but yeah just that that security that I had in not
- 11:09having to hide anything including who I was.
- 11:13You know I I drank because of fear and Alcoholics Anonymous
- 11:17took that fear away. I was able to get into a
- 11:24relationship and hold that relationship.
- 11:26I didn't have to make a choice between alcohol and and my
- 11:31partner and we ended up getting married and and then we moved
- 11:37from Armidale. We went on a little trip with a
- 11:41few Alcoholics up to up to Darwin and we came back and we
- 11:46were lucky enough to be able to purchase a house on the coast
- 11:51and and I'd already built one in sobriety you know the house at
- 11:55AA Built's what I call it because all the members just
- 11:59came along and helped and and it was it was so good but was a bit
- 12:04bloody cold in you know. But also we moved to the coast
- 12:08and and everything again just fell into place employment you
- 12:13know we had a place to live. We were able to really enjoy our
- 12:18life and and that's what sobriety is about enjoying life.
- 12:22You know, like I was able to just just to get that
- 12:30understanding about alcohol had defeated me and that and that it
- 12:35was a real ball and chain around my leg.
- 12:37And without that I wasn't a bad person.
- 12:39You know, Alcoholics are not bad people.
- 12:42They're sick people trying to get well and out.
- 12:45Through Alcoholics Anonymous I achieved that and I I haven't
- 12:49picked up a drink since 2009 and haven't needed to, haven't
- 12:55wanted to. It's it's a it's quite a miracle
- 12:59but I go today but I do do the I practice the things that the old
- 13:05timers and had taught me. You know I I've got a Home group
- 13:10and I've I do service and I've got a sponsor and all those
- 13:15things that are suggested I just followed them and I still do
- 13:20that today. You know I was able to to find A
- 13:26and have true faith and and trust in a power greater than
- 13:30myself and and what he she or it is I don't know.
- 13:35But at all I know is that it works and it makes my life so
- 13:39much better. You know that spirituality, you
- 13:43know, there's there's no religion in AI.
- 13:45It is simply spiritual. And you know we move on from
- 13:51there. And I'm I'm, I'm able to now do
- 13:58these trips that I'm on now. I'm standing on the Murray
- 14:02Bridge at a place called Bury in SA with A tag along of people
- 14:10with the Royal Alcoholics and we're having an absolute ball,
- 14:14you know, and and that freedom that's been given to me by not
- 14:19picking up that first drink is just incredible.
- 14:23You know To be able to go where I like what I like and do what I
- 14:27want without having to look over my shoulder for police or or
- 14:32having to drive the back roads because I'm, I've been on the
- 14:36piss and I can't. I can't go on the main roads
- 14:40because I'll get pulled up for sure.
- 14:42You know and and just that freedom and and choices I can
- 14:46make in my life today. You know, like it's it's just a
- 14:51a great feeling to not have to be shackled by alcohol.
- 14:56There is a solution if you're out there and and you're you're
- 14:59struggling with this this addiction.
- 15:02It isn't because it it is a disease.
- 15:05It's and, you know, mental obsession and physical allergies
- 15:10to alcohol and some people just can't handle that.
- 15:13And I'm one of them. And I'm just able today to
- 15:18maintain my sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 15:21And it doesn't take much time out of my my week, you know,
- 15:28each day is about 5 or 10 minutes.
- 15:31And then I go to a couple of meetings a week just to stay in
- 15:35touch, just to remind myself of how what it was like back then
- 15:40and what it's like today. And I can assure you that today
- 15:44is much better than what it was like back then because it it
- 15:49wasn't much of A lie. Sitting on the lion's chair
- 15:52getting drunk every day and and all the dishonesty that went
- 15:57with that. You know, like I don't tell.
- 16:00I don't have to tell lies today and then cover that up when I
- 16:04get found out by telling another lie.
- 16:06I just, I don't have any of that stuff in my life.
- 16:09It is just so serene and beautiful you know and to be
- 16:15able to do this stuff for with other people that understand the
- 16:20way I feel is a great thing and that that support that we get
- 16:24from Alcoholics Anonymous and the members of Alcoholics
- 16:28Anonymous is just simply incredible.
- 16:31I can go to any town in any country around the world and I
- 16:35can find if I'm if I'm struggling I can find someone
- 16:39that can help me. You know, I I don't, I don't go
- 16:42away from AAI stick to exactly what's written in what we call
- 16:48the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous and that is where my
- 16:51recovery came from. And it still does today.
- 16:54That first 164 pages, that's all we've got to read.
- 16:57That's all we've got to practice.
- 17:00You know it's not a big effort and and we maintain what we
- 17:05have. You know, like our first step
- 17:08tells us that we're powerless over alcohol in our lives to
- 17:11become unmanageable. And if I can take the first part
- 17:16of that step, I am powerless over alcohol and I don't pick up
- 17:19that first drink. Then that unmanageability
- 17:23doesn't come into my life because I'm able to deal with
- 17:26things as they come up. I'm not leaving it and leaving
- 17:29it. And then the bank's knocking on
- 17:30the door and and the employer's knocking on the door ringing up
- 17:35and all that sort of stuff. I just don't pick up that first
- 17:39drink and then I don't have any problems in my life, you know,
- 17:43and and yeah, I life on life's terms.
- 17:47There's always going to be a little bit of something
- 17:49happening here and there, but I can deal with that And I don't
- 17:54have all the answers all the time.
- 17:56But there's always someone that I can ring up and get advice and
- 18:01and just slow down, take a breath and then make a decision
- 18:06based on on reality. Not what my head tells me
- 18:11sometimes because a lot of the time my first thought is not my
- 18:15best one. So that's why I have a sponsor
- 18:19and I have people around me and Alcoholics Anonymous that kind
- 18:22of advise me on what they think I should do.
- 18:25And then I make an informed decision.
- 18:27You know and and it's that simple.
- 18:29It's it doesn't have to be hard. Alcoholics Anonymous is not
- 18:32hard. It's actually a privilege.
- 18:35So for me I'm very grateful alcoholic and and I I just keep
- 18:46doing what I need to do on a daily basis.
- 18:49I keep it very very simple and the first decision I have to
- 18:53make every day when I get out of bed is I'm not going to pick up
- 18:57that first drink today. And then if I'm struggling, I
- 19:02contact a member, I ring up someone or I get myself to a
- 19:07meeting and doesn't seem quite that bad.
- 19:11You know that one of the first things I was told in sobriety.
- 19:15If I'm struggling, pick up the phone before you pick up that
- 19:18first drink and that can probably save your life.
- 19:23You know someone will come and see you or you or they'll talk
- 19:26me down to to reality again you know so so whatever happens, you
- 19:33know doesn't matter if your bum's on fire.
- 19:36Don't pick up the first drink, ring someone up.
- 19:39Ask for help. That was one of the hardest
- 19:41things I had to do was ask for help.
- 19:43I'd never asked for help in my life but when I did that help
- 19:47came and I became teachable and and through the members of a a,
- 19:55oh if I've been able to stay sober.
- 19:57So guys if you're you know, if you're struggling with this
- 20:00stuff just put your hand up and say OK I need some help.
- 20:06Give Alcoholics Anonymous a go. And what do you got to lose?
- 20:10You know, I never had I I'd already lost most things in my
- 20:15life. I had material stuff, but I had
- 20:16no life. So that help came when I asked
- 20:21for it. And that's one of the biggest,
- 20:23hardest things I've ever had to do, is ask for help.
- 20:26But when I did, it came, and it came freely and lovingly from
- 20:31the members of Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 20:33So if you're struggling, make that phone call, get to that
- 20:38meeting and see how you go. You got nothing to lose.
- 20:42All the best, folks. Bye.
