- Kiki George: What happens when a mysterious death sends a family and an entire school looking real suspicious? This is the Minor Mischief Podcast asking Londs County, Georgia to stop playing in our faces about Kendrick Johnson. Welcome back. Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back. Welcome back to the Minor Mischief Podcast. I'm your host and homegirl for the time being, Mrs. Kiana Mir, and thank you for hanging out with me. Although I came to realize that this is our 19th episode. So if you're a regular now, I'm your homegirl for real. So today's case, I'm not gonna lie. Upon hearing this story for the first time, it pissed me off. And, you know, as time goes on and over the years, you know, you kind of go on, life goes on, other things happen. But every once in a while, I'll see things about this case and this story. And every time I see or hear this story, I want to drive down to Georgia and start making noise and asking questions. Because there are so many unanswered questions, so many pieces that don't make sense. And if it were God forbid, your child or mine, we would not rest until justice was served. So I wanted to share the story to number one, raise awareness because let's be honest, stories fall in and out of the headlines all the time, like I mentioned before, but also to bring back to our minds this case because this family is still seeking answers. And there may be someone out there with the exact answers that they need that is willing and unafraid to speak on it. So I'm gonna skip the pleasantries this week. But I promise I'll be back to cackling next week when we talk about another crazy teenager that has gone off the deep end. Our eyes are on you, Mackenzie Sherilla. I kid, I kid. She stays catching strays. This story, like I said, is so convoluted. It's so many things going on. I'm gonna try to tell it as linear as possible. So please stay with me because there's gonna be a lot of this was said, but this wasn't said, and this happened, and this this happened. So I That's your warning. It's a little story's a little crazy, but buckle up and hold on tight. Without further ado, let's get into it, shall we? We shall. For today's story, we are heading over to Valdasta, Georgia. Valdasta, Georgia. Let me tell you something. I, you know, I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and I had an aunt that lived in Florida, in Palm Coast. And we would take that drive from New York to Palm Coast. And then during my middle school years, we lived in Smyrna, Georgia. So we would drive from Smyrna to Palm Coast. And I always remember passing Valdasta. And I just remember every time we drove through Valdasta, like you ever drive through somewhere and get the ick. And this is no shade to the people of Valdasta. This is really no shade to you all. But you ever drive past someplace and you're just like, like my my spirit just I don't like it here. That was me and Valdasta, Georgia. Now Valdasta, Georgia, aka Title Town or Winter Town, as the locals call it, because they're known for their local high school victories. And I'm not going to lie. If I was from a place that was goaded in sports, I would be so, y'all would be sick of me. I would be so ignorant. Like you would not be able to tell me nothing. Especially if I was a part of the winning team. I don't care if I didn't score a single basket or nothing. Is that do you score baskets? I don't know. Make a dunk? I don't oof. This is bad. I would just never shut up about it. Now Valdosta, Georgia is home to about 55,000 residents and it hosts things like Wild Adventures theme park. Valdasta is also known as Azalea City because of its annual spring bloom festival. And I guess that's kind of like the cherry blossom festival, blooming in DC. My allergies would go crazy. I would simply just never get out of bed. Valdasta is also home to the Moody Air Force base. Apparently, Valdasta is still very much unequal among all races and all classes. So in Valdasta, some of the white residents still refuse to be served by black waitresses. Some of the white residents still refuse to go to black cashiers, patronize black owned businesses, things of that nature. Valdasta is also known for the inequality of the punishment of crimes. You see, if a white teenager in Valdasta and a black teenager in Valdasta are both seen doing the same crime, the white teenager in Valdasta is more likely to receive less punishment for the crime than the black teenager, even though they were doing the exact same thing. Valdasta was also the scene of the lynching of Mary Turner and her baby. And if you're familiar with the Mary Turner case, I'm going to give you the Cliff Notes version, but I'm going to be up front with you. This case is one of the most egregious racially charged killings that I have ever heard of. So in 1918, there was a young lady. Her name was Mary Turner. She's a young black woman and also a resident of Valdasta, Georgia. She's eight months pregnant and her husband gets lynched by an all-white mob. And so she's like, No, I'm not gonna stay silent about this. I'm going to protest. Like what you guys did was wrong. So she peacefully protested and publicly condemned the killing, just saying, like, you guys should be held accountable for killing my husband. And for that, they targeted her. Just days after Mary started bringing awareness to the killing of her husband, a mob found her near the Florida, Georgia border, and they decided to make an example out of her. They killed her. But before they did, they cut her unborn baby out of her stomach and stomped it to death in front of her. What happened was deliberately brutal, deliberately heinous, deliberately callous, and intended to send a message and instill fear in the black community of Valdasta. Her death was retaliation. Period. It was meant to silence her. It was meant to punish her and being a black woman speaking out in a system that did not allow it. And today, Mary Turner's story is remembered not only for the horror of what was done, but for her courage. Because even knowing the risk, she chose to demand d justice, even though she paid for it with her life. And if you think the climate in Valdasta, Georgia has changed since then, I'm here to tell you that 100 years later, in 2018, on the centennial anniversary of Mary Turner's killing, her memorial was shot up by white supremacists of Valdasta. So yes, just eight short years ago. Two years before COVID, they decided to desecrate Mary Turner's memorial site. Simply because she's a black woman. In the very same year, Valdasta made headline news again when the workers of the local Jimmy Johns were photographed wearing white clan attire. And yes, that happened in this day and age. Now I do love me some Jimmy Johns bread, but y'all don't have to worry about me ever again. So now that we have a little backstory on Bass Accords, Valdasta, Georgia, we are introduced to Kendrick Lamar Johnson. Not to be confused with Kendrick Lamar Duckworth. Kendrick Lamar Johnson was born on October 10th, 1995. his birthday's the day before my hubbies. And you know I love me in October, baby. So Kendrick was born in Valdasta, Georgia to his parents, Kenneth and Jacqueline Johnson. And they, I guess, are native because I know that they said they've been in Valdasta all the all their lives. So I don't know if like They were born anywhere else, Kenneth and Jackie, but they said they had been in Valdasta their entire lives. And I do swear I feel like every black family has a Jackie. I can't prove it, but I really would like someone to do some numbers on that because I feel like every black family has a Jackie. Kendrick does have two older siblings, an older sister named Ken Yeta and a brother named Kenneth Lamar Johnson Jr. Fun fact all of the Johnson siblings have the initials KJ. And it stands for King Jesus. I did also find it cute that all of their names start with Ken, Kendrick, Kenneth, and Ken Yeta. Kendrick was described as someone who was very motivated. He was a star athlete who was very dedicated to his craft and loved sports. Football was his favorite sports. And I I'm led to believe that was his passion. Like he loved football. And he did basketball and track in the offseason to stay fit and to stay conditioned and to continue moving so that. You know, he'll be ready for the football season in the fall. Kendrick was said to be very family oriented as he enjoyed spending time with his family, going to the mall, and going out to eat. Which I'm not gonna hold you. That is my kind of time. Going out to eat is one of my favorite things to do. Some sources say that he was an honor student, while other sources say that he was more athletic than academic, but he did pass all his classes. Either way, he loved sports. was no issue in school and loved his family deeply and dearly. Let's head on back to 2013. Now it's January 10th, 2013, which is a Thursday. It's the day after school returns from winter break. And I don't know about you guys, but I get post holiday depression. Because once you return to work and school in January, you pretty much know you're locked in because it's not really going on until the spring, you know? So it's a cool winter day and we find Kendrick at school. He Attends Lounds County High School, which is one of the local high schools in Valdasta, Georgia. So just to give you guys a little backstory on the landscape of Londs County High School, I guess they've done some renovations on it. And so it has two gyms. There's an old gym and a new gym. In the old gym, like students kind of hang out there between classes. They store a bunch of gym equipment in there. Sometimes they'll go there for like little practices and things like that, but it wasn't the mostly used gym. PE and stuff likely took place in the new gym. But the old gym, they still had access to it. They still did things in there, but that was just not the primary gym at the time. So, like I mentioned, the old gym does have old gym equipment in there. And apparently a lot of the students would leave their belongings there between classes to prevent from paying locker fees. And I read a comment under a Reddit post while I was researching this case. And they were just like, okay, are locker fees common now? And I'm just like, I had locker fees. I graduated high school in 2007. my gosh, next year's gonna be 20 years. Jeez. I don't, I'm not that old, y'all. I'm really not. But I graduated high school in 2007. And even back then, we had to pay for lockers. And it was me and my five locker mates against the world. Okay. I don't even know who paid for the locker. I just know we used to hang out at it and eventually I started keeping my things in there. But we shared. It was like six of us. We were in that locker deep. But yes. You do have to pay for lockers. My son's school charges for lockers. And I know a lot of schools post-COVID don't even offer the ability to use lockers anymore. So it's Thursday, January 10th, 2013. It's a school day. There's a lot of commotion. Kids are in and out of class. The day is going on. And Kendrick, after third period, he decides to walk into the old gym to retrieve a pair of gym shoes because apparently that's, like I said, where they kept their stuff. So surveillance catches Kendrick walking into the old gym at about 1 30 p.m. And then he walks to an area of the gym with no surveillance and he is never seen alive again. So Thursday evening comes, Jackie's home, and she's just like, that's really weird. I haven't heard from Kendrick. He's not home and he's always like the thing about having children is you know your kids. Even though they will do some things that will surprise you and you would be like, I wasn't aware you were this dumb in the head, you have a good sense of what your kid would do. So if your kid is always home on time, it is safe to say my kid should be home by now. So Jackie's home and she's just like, That's weird. I haven't heard from Kendrick. He would have called or texted and said he, you know, if he had to go somewhere and needed to be home late. And so she calls his bus driver, which I'm going to be honest. This is one of the things I love about a small town because in what world do you know you could just pick up the phone, call the bus driver, be like, Hey, you see my kid? Not in my world. I don't love him enough to live there. But I do love the sense of community that a small town does bring. So Jackie calls the bus driver and she's just like, Hey, Kendrick is not home. Have you seen him? And the bus driver's just like, Well, no, he was not on the bus. I figured he stayed after school for a game or something, but no, he hasn't been on the bus this afternoon. And so Jackie's just like, okay, thank you. I'm gonna see if I can find him. So then she hangs up with the bus driver and she calls Ken Yatta. And she's just like, Ken Yeta, have you heard from Kendrick? Like, he's not home. He wasn't on the bus. And, you know, I haven't seen or heard from him. And Kenyetta's like, no, I I haven't seen or heard from him either. And that's really weird. You're right, mom. Like, we should have seen or heard from him by now. She hangs up with Ken Geta and then she calls Kenneth Sr. Now, Kenneth Sr. is an over-the-road truck driver. So during the time of this story, he was actually in New York because he was, you know, traveling for work, as he does. But Kendrick calls him every single day without fail. And so Jackie calls Kenneth and she's just like, babe, have you heard from Kendrick? Like, this is strange. I haven't seen or heard from him. And he's just like, No, I haven't heard from him. And that's weird because I he always like he would have called me by this time. Like I, you know, I've been a little busy today or whatever. Cause but Kendrick does usually call me by this time. So Jackie then goes to Kenyetta and she's like, Something is wrong. We need to go find him. So Ken Yetta's like, Yeah, I agree. let me go grab my purse and my shoes. let's go just ride by the school, see if he's there, see if maybe he got hurt, like. Because at this point, they're just like, something is wrong. None of us had heard from him, and he should have been home by now. So it's getting dark outside now. Jack and Ken Yetta go driving around. They can't find Kendrick. And so they finally return home. It's close to midnight. She calls Kenneth Sr. Again, and she's like, We drove by the school. We drove downtown. We checked all the bus stops. He is nowhere to be found. And so Kenneth like, Call the police. Jackie calls the police and an officer shows up to the home, takes Jackie's statement, and he's just like, I'm sure he's fine. Like he's just probably out with some little fast tail girl. This was like verbatim. This is not be being silly, because I know I be silly a lot on this show, but this was verbatim. He said he's probably just out with some little fast tail girl. Jackie is a saint, because I would punched him in his face. I would have rocked his world. Cause who are you talking to? And so Jackie is just like, Well, what makes you think that's what happened? And he's just she's like, Where did you get this information from? Like, why aren't you taking this seriously? And he's just like, Chill out. He's a 17 year old boy. He probably up in some, you know, taco, and he'll come back home. Okay. So the officer leaves, ca Jackie is back at home and she's just like, My baby's dead. Yeah. She said by the time she went to lay down that night, she was like, He's dead, because I would have heard from him by now. And he is not here. Kenneth starts driving south and he said that when midnight came, like when Jackie called and, you know, called the police and everything, and she called him and was like, Yeah, I called the police, da da da da. He said he pulled over. And he just went and laid in the bed of his truck because he also they did not discuss this. Like neither one of them like said like I think he's dead. But they both described like feeling like he's gone. He would not do this. He knew better and in his life he had always done better. He would not miss curfew for anything in this world. So they both did not sleep a wink that night because they felt in their heart and soul that something was wrong. The next day, Jackie and Kenetta head out to the school as soon as it opened in the morning. They barreled into the front office and they're just like, hey, have either of you seen Kendrick? Have you heard anything? Has anyone mentioned anything? Has anyone said anything? And so the front office staff is just like, no, we haven't seen or heard anything, but here's what we can do. Let's print up some flyers, get it around town. We can print them up in color. We can batch print them on our big printer over here. And I can get them to you. And that way we can start putting up flyers, just kind of raising awareness to the fact that we cannot find him. And so Jackie's like, Yeah, that'll be super helpful. Thank you. And so the office staff gets to work. They're doing the flyers, they're helping Jackie try to put everything together. Two female students were sitting on one of the mats in the old gym at the same time. And they look over and they're just like, Girl, is th are those socks sticking out of that mat? And the other girl is just like, Those do look like socks. Why would socks be sticking out of a mat? And so they're looking at it and they're just like, Okay, somebody's playing a prank. Let's walk a little closer. And so they climb up on the bleachers and they're walking, you know. Going out to the mat to see what the heck is going on. And they look inside and see that Kendrick's body is inside the mat. And so they panic and they're just like, heck no. And they run and they tell one of the teachers, like, there's there's a body in the mat. Like someone is in that mat. So the teacher's like, what the heck? So the teacher runs over, him and like six students, I think it was, and they they're pulling. Moving mats out the way and they're pulling that mat. So they pull it down and they pull Kendrick out. And while this is happening, one of the students calls nine one one. Kendrick was found in a pool of blood and viniment, and they said that the smell coming from his body was intense. And I do have questions on that, 'cause how long does it take a body to decompose? I mean, that seems kind of soon. But I mean, I don't know anything about this and I don't want to Google it because my search history is my search history. But yeah, I'm curious to know. Anyway, meanwhile, back at the office, Jackie and Kenyetta look around and they're just like, there's a lot of commotion going on right now. And so Jackie is just like, hey, what's going on in that gym? And they're just like, we don't know, but I think something's going on. I think they found a student or something in there. And Jackie's just like, that's my son. You need to let me back. there and they're just like, Well, no, we can't let you back there 'cause, you know, like security reasons. And Ken Yattti was just like, The hell you not. And she walks back to the gym. The door was closed though and it was locked. So she could not get in and no one would let her in because she was not a student of the school. I watched the documentary called Finding Kendrick as part of my research for this case. It's it's a good it was it was very informative. It's probably about an hour and forty-five minutes long. And it just details like the case and the family and all that stuff. It's on Apple TV. And Kendrick Senior, he said when Jackie called him and told him that they would not let her back to the gym, he said I would have gone to jail that day. Because there was nothing but God that could have kept me from busting down that door and getting in that gym. And I'm not gonna hold you. I feel like he would have. It's not funny, but I truly do feel like he would have. so Jackie and Kenetta are trying to figure out what's going on back at the gym. And Jackie goes to one of the school resource officers and she's just like, I need you to tell me what is going on. And they're still just like, yeah, we think they found like a student, a body back there. And she's like wailing. Like she is she collapses. She's on the floor. They eventually go get a wheelchair to kind of prop her up in. And so as she is breaking down, officers arrive on the scene. And Jackie is, I mean, screaming because she knows, like she's just like, I know that is my child. And so the officers arrive at the scene and Jackie is sitting there in the front hallway wailing and screaming. And sc school is still going on. There's no official lockdown. There's no code red. There's nothing. And so she's wailing. There's all this commotion because they're in between classes. The kids that found Kendrick are freaking out. There's so much going on. Officers walk up to Jackie and they're just like, Girl, why are you crying? This is not me. I'm not trying to be funny. This is literally what happened. And they're like, Don't you think you're doing a bit much? Like, we don't even know who the body belongs to. And Jackie looks at the officer and she's just like, has anybody else in this town been reported missing? And they look at her kind of with a face like, okay, you okay, you got a point. And she's like, That's my child. I know that's my child. And they never let Kendrick's family back to the gym to see his body. They put him in a body bag. First of all, They rolled him back up in the mat, took pictures of him, put him in a body bag, and sent him out to be autopsied immediately. Okay. So shortly after finding Kendrick's body, police they come out to the family. They don't even let them see him. They go out to the front where they're at. By this time, it's Jackie Kangetta, Jackie's sister, and whoever else they call. And They're just like they show Kenyeta a picture. And they're just like, Is this him? And Ken Yeta then verifies, yes, that is my brother. And so they're just like, okay, we don't suspect any foul play. We just think, you know, he got stuck and couldn't get out. And but, you know, we'll send him for an autopsy and you know, we'll call y'all, whatever. Whew, chia. Kendrick's family was unable to see his body until after the medical examiner performed an autopsy and Kendrick's body was released from the crime lab for them to see. By this time, Kendrick Sr. makes it back. He drove back home from New York and he said when they got to the lab and they zipped the body bag down from Kendrick, his entire face was bruised and swollen. It's black, blue, purple. all over. His head was lumped up and his body wasn't even put in the body bag properly. His arm was laying on top of his head. The pictures are available online. And it is the real picture, if you can stomach it, because it was very hard for me to look at. And I feel like that image is burned into my head at this point. But Kendrick looked very similar to the way Emmett Till looked in the picture that circulates about him. The open casket funeral that his mother had for him. His body looks, his face is I mean, he looks like he was beat down. So let's break this down. We're gonna do a quick recap because I know a lot just happened. I'm a little familiar with gym mats because my son is a wrestler. I have watched him and his team roll and move gym mats consistently since his sixth grade year. The gym mat in question is six feet tall. Kendrick is 5'10. The diameter of the opening of the gym mat when rolled up is 14 inches wide. Kendrick's shoulders are 19 inches wide. Kendrick is a 17 year old boy. If Kendrick fell in the mat, even if he flailed around good enough, the it was likely that he could have knocked the mat over. Also, it would be physically impossible for him to fall into the mat the way that he did, the way that he was found. I honestly would have loved to see someone with a similar build as Kenneth. Esc sorry. I would honestly love to see someone with a similar build as Kendrick wedge themselves into a mat that was rolled up. Like I really do feel like as a part of the investigation, they should have rolled a mat, had someone place shoes in there and had someone try to fish them out. Someone with the exact same build as Kendrick tried to fish it out. And I would love to see how that works. So, quick recap. Kendrick goes to school, doesn't come home that night. Nine one one is called. They do nothing. Family goes out to the school. Kendrick's body is found. Family is not allowed to see Kendrick until he's released from the crime lab. All right, we're all caught up. So when Kendrick's body was found, there was a pool of blood and vomit found underneath his head. The shoes that he went in to get were underneath him, but they were spotless. The shoes that he allegedly went in for were spotless. The shoes that he allegedly went in for were spotless, but there was a pool of blood and vomit underneath him. There was also another pair of shoes just kind of tossed on top of him. And there was blood on a shoe a few yards away from him. And there was blood on the wall close by the mat that he was found in. The medical examiner processed Kendrick's body and listed on Kendrick's death certificate that Kendrick died from positional asphyxia. When questioned, the medical examiner told investigators that this is her theory and this is what she believes happened. The problem with this statement is that theories do not belong on death certificates. Facts belong on death certificates. And if the medical examiner was unsure. But thought that Kendrick died from positional asphyxia, she should have listed his cause of death as undetermined. Londs County Coroner Bill Watson made a statement as to the inconsistencies with the way Kendrick's body was found when he examined it. He found it odd that the students and teacher that removed Kendrick's body from the mat, but when he arrived, Kendrick's body had been rolled back into the mat and repositioned. He also found it odd that per Georgia law, whenever a body is found, the coroner is to be notified immediately. And he was not notified until later. He ended his statement with saying that the crime scene, in his opinion, had been compromised. However, after the story aired and his quote was released to the nation, he sent an email to the interviewer stating, quote, I would appreciate it if you would destroy this interview with me. I do not want this to be shown whatsoever. I feel like our situation should not be aired. Other inconsistent evidence include that the sneakers found close to Kendrick was never tested. The blood on the wall found close to him was tested and allegedly came back as not belonging to Kendrick. When investigators were asked if they knew who the blood belonged to, they said no. Now it was it was a a large splatter of blood. It really was. I feel like I would have questioned it. If I walk if I was an investigator and I was processing a crime scene and it looks suspicious to begin with, but there's this large blood splatter on the wall. Not directly next to, but fairly close to where this person accidentally died. I would want to know who that blood belongs to. If it does not belong to him, who does it belong to? That would be my question because I feel like that would kind of help me figure out what the heck was even going on. But I digress. They tested the blood, it did not belong to Kendrick. They're saying that it doesn't matter who it belongs to, it's not Kendrick, so it's irrelevant. There was also a gray hoodie close by to Kendrick with blood stains on the cuff that also was not tested. Kendrick's body was also twisted into the mat in a way that was not consistent with someone falling into the mat. His legs were kind of mangled, and what the exam what the coroner said is that there is no way that his legs should have twisted like that if he was stuck. If he was able to move his legs in that way, he would have been able to kind of wiggle himself around. Additionally, several students wrote letters saying that they never climb the mats to retrieve their shoes. They always tilt the mats, lay them on their sides, and just pick the shoes up from the floor. The most damning piece of evidence, though, is that when the FBI requested surveillance from the gym, hours of footage was missing. The camera right outside the gym was still recording, but According to school officials, the time on that camera is incorrect and did not match the time to the cameras inside of the gym. So you could be looking at two pieces of camera footage, but you couldn't tell what came first, what came last because the time was inconsistent. One thing I have noticed since covering true crime cases is that why do we even bother with cameras? Cause when we need them, they don't be working. They are never working. It's neither here nor there. Kendrick's funeral, I believe, was held on January twenty-nint, twenty thirteen. I may have that date wrong because there was so much there was so much going on around his burial. But we'll get into that later. If that date is incorrect, I apologize. I found that on a site, but it very well could be incorrect. But he's his funeral was held in January 2013. Hundreds of supporters came out. To go to his funeral to support his family. And he was laid to rest at a burial site. I believe it's called Sunset Something, but I did not write it down. I apologize. but there was just a lot of just crazy things going on around his burial. After Kendrick's funeral, his family demanded answers. Jackie took the picture of Kendrick from the crime lab and began. Posting it on the internet over and over and over and over and over. She said that she wanted to post it so much because she wanted everybody to see what her son looked like and realize that he would not have looked like that if he had accidentally suffocated to death. After his funeral, they started protesting downtown. They were going down to city halls, asking questions, asking for a response. They were there were protesters marching from Atlanta to Valdasta. Mind you, Atlanta and Valdasta are nowhere near each other. It's a f that is it's a far drive. So I couldn't imagine. But they were doing it. They marched miles and miles. They protested on street corners. They did silent sit-ins. They locked hands and wrapped around the court building. There were even protesters just, I mean, they were. Everywhere. The protesters, however, were not very well received. Kendrick's aunt said that people will walk past them yelling, How can you protest so much? Go get a job, you low life. And she's just like, I have two jobs, but I'm gonna show up for my nephew. She said they were just tormented and just yelled at, and just you people. You people don't have anything better to do. She said, she said like they were very nasty to her. The sheriff, the sheriff department, they kept trying to shut them down. They kept telling them to move. Like they just continued showing up. They were protesting at the courthouse. They were holding hands in front of the doors, sitting on the floor in the courtroom. Like they were doing anything that they could to get attention to Kendrick's case. They were threatened with jail time and they were just like, bring it on, baby, because what you're not finna do is forget my son. And eventually Kenneth and Jackie were arrested for the protest, but they posted bail and they said that the protest did exactly what it set out, what they set out for it to do, which was bring attention to their son's case. In June 2013, Kendrick's body was exhumed and his family hired a private forensic pathologist. You guys have no idea how many takes it took to. The word private private forensic pathologist is punching me in my throat right now. Like I'm just I'm having a hard time with it. But they hired a private forensic pathologist in Florida named Dr. Bill Anderson to perform a secondary autopsy on Kendrick's body because they were just like, We don't believe nothing that y'all are saying because you have lied so much. It's kind of like when your man cheat on you so much and it's like, I hear what you're saying. But I don't believe you were at a funeral at eleven PM on a Tuesday night. That's what they were like. We need, we need just we need answers. And so they send Kendrick's body down to Florida. Dr. Bill Anderson is performing this autopsy. And he said before he even viewed Kendrick's body, he read through the report of the death certificate. And he said that he immediately noticed alarming things. He said he noticed on the state's finding that it was reported that his lungs had no fluid in them. They also took Kendrick's lungs and weighed them. Because apparently, and this was news to me, when you do an autopsy of any kind, you take the internal organs out, you bag them, and then you process them individually. Once you're done, you place them all back in the body and sew the body back up, but they stay in the bags. So on the report. The weight of Kendrick's lungs were listed as normal. So I can't remember what he said, but like let's say, and this is inaccurate, I know don't come from me the comments, but let's say your lungs are two pounds each. He said that on the report, the lungs were both two pounds each. If Kendrick died from positional s asphyxia or suffocation, his lungs would have filled with fluid because as you're laying upside down and as you're suffocating. There's more pressure on your lungs and they begin to fill with fluid because there's no air. And so they would weigh heavier than usual. And his lungs were normal. His lungs were listed as normal on the medical report. And he is just like red flag. He could not have suffocated if his lungs were not damaged. So then he gets Kendrick's body and he's just like, all right, let's listen to it. Let's look at your lungs, you know, because what the heck? So he opens him up and he was in sheer disbelief at what he saw. All of Kendrick's internal organs had been removed and his body was stuffed with paper. And not only was his body stuffed with paper, his body was stuffed with like ads, like coupon ads, newspapers, his completely all of his organs. From his head to his pelvis were gone. Dr. Anderson said that in 40 years of practicing, he had never seen anything like it. And so he called, I guess there's like a chief forensic pathologist. I don't know if it's regional or national or whatever, but there's like, you know, it's the higher up, the powers that be or whatever. And so he calls and he's just like, I just received a body and it's filled with paper. And they're just like, I have never, with all of the cases that I have overseen, heard anything like that. Dr. Anderson said that there was also hemorrhaging found near Kendrick's jaw, near his carotid sinus. And he said the only way that that would happen is if Kendrick was hit in that area and began to bleed, which would align with the finding of Kendrick dying from blunt force trauma, which lines up with the way he was positioned, the crime scene, the blood found, etc. So he calls Kendrick's family and he's just like, I have something to tell you guys. And they're just like, okay, what's going on? And he's just like, all of Kendrick's body, like all of his internal organs, are gone. And they're just like, I beg your finest pardon. So they call down to the medical examiner's office and they're just like, where the hell are my son's organs? And they tell them that, you know, they were so badly damaged and decomposed. We just incinerated them. I would be in jail. I would be in jail. I would be in jail. Cause what do you mean? And you did that and you didn't even tell me. You didn't even give me the option. And what does it matter if his internal organs are decaying, baby? His whole body is decaying. He smelled when they found him. I would I would have been down there. Jesus. Okay. All right. We're getting off track. On October 31st, 2013, a federal attorney named Michael Moore was assigned to Kendrick's case. And he did this big press release and was just like, I'm going to oversee this case. Something in the milk ain't clean. I'm going to bring justice to this case. I'm going to help this family. And I am going to see to it that Kendrick's Johnson death is not in vain. And so he made this big statement and Kendrick's family is on the corner protesting as usual. And they get a call and they're just like, my gosh, this is great news. Like, thank you. Thank you so much. After attorney more became involved, this is when the theory involving the Bell brothers surfaced. So, quick little backstory. Of course, like I said earlier, Kendrick is an athlete. And there are these two brothers that also go to Lowndes County High School. And their father is a prominent, highly decorated FBI agent named Rick Bell. And I'm gonna say y'all's name, and I wish y'all would say something about it because they have soon people, they have sued people for saying their names in the past. But guess what? Brandon and Brian Bell and Rick Bell. Brandon and Brian Bell and Rick Bell. I'll say it again because y'all ain't gonna touch me. Anyway, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I might redact that or I might not. We'll see. So the Bell brothers, Brian and Brandon Bell, they're the sons of this highly prominent, highly known, highly respected, highly decorated FBI agent named Rick Bell. And they had beef with none other, none other than, hmm, you guessed it, Kendrick Lamar Johnson. So Apparently they were on a school bus and they were going to like this sporting event. I don't know if they were playing or if they were going to see if it was a field trip. I'm not sure of that part. But they were going to this Ford sporting event and they were on a school bus. And so Brian apparently, he's kind of like a jokester, a prankster. But you know those like jokesters and pranksters when it's just like, this is not funny. And if you touch me again, I'm gonna punch you in your face. He was more that kind than that's funny. Like Get my notebook off the ceiling. Thank you. but he was just, you know, he just did these rambunctious, just belligerent things. And people were just used to it. It's just like, you know, just Brian being Brian. So they're on the bus. Kendrick is sitting. Brian is sitting behind him. And Brian decides it would be funny to grab Kendrick's dreads and like push his head down. And so Kendrick had a friend, I can't remember his name, but he was like toward the front of the bus. And he said, Brian pulls Kendrick's dreads and he's like pushing his dead head down, like, yeah, Kendrick, you know, I got your dreads. And they said Kendrick wiggled out and rocked his shit. Like Kendrick beat his ass. He beat his ass. And after the fight, the fight gets broken up, they're pulled over. Brian is allowed to continue on with the game. So the bus leaves. Brian is on the bus. Kendrick gets sent home in a deputy squad car. Okay. Valdasta, Georgia. So Kendrick confided in his father after the fight. He's just like, Dad, like things are weird with these guys. Like he was telling him one time, he's just like, one time the older brother, Brandon, came up to and is just like, You think it's over? It's not over. Is not over and it'll never be over. And then he said one time he was out like a game or something, and the father, Rick Bell, came up to him and is just like, I don't feel like this fight was fair. Why don't you come on over to our house and let's try it again? First of all, Rick, why would you be in in children's business? It's one thing, like I would understand that, like if and I say I would understand very, very loosely. Because for me, if my child is being an asshole. And you get your ass beat, you know, it's just it is what it is. Like you just gotta take it because you started with him. But also, I do understand that there are some parents who don't see their kids as doing anything wrong, who are just like, you know what, I'm gonna go press charges. That still would have been the wrong thing to do, in my opinion, but I would have been like, it would have made more sense than you saying, yeah, come on over to our house and let's do, let's have a redo. It that doesn't make sense. It also doesn't make sense that you are an FBI officer. Like, why are you involved in children's business? It just like, you know, it didn't make sense to me. But so these things are going on and Kendrick confides in his dad. And so his dad's just like, Well, what did you say when he told you to come over to the house? And Kendrick is just like, Dad, I just looked at him like he lost his damn mind and I walked off. Rick denies that this conversation ever happened. It was also said that Brian's behavior changed after Kendrick's death. Like he just would like there were ways that he would always walk, that he stopped walking. He stopped like just he just was different. He was just different. And he would just go out of the way to do things that were different. Take that how you want. I don't I I don't know Brian, so I can't say like he used to joke around and now he doesn't. I don't know. They just said that he was weird after that fight. So, as you know, the investigations are going on, everyone is being questioned. All of the students at the school are being questioned, especially after attorney Moore takes over the case. He's like, I'm talking to everybody. Like, I need to know what the heck is going on. So he pulls 120 students, questions all of them. He's questioning staff. They're questioning, you know, everybody. And the only two people that refuse to Be questioned and lawyered up immediately were Brandon and Brian Bell. Also, as the investigation was going on, all of the witnesses admitted to one thing. They said that Rick Bell came to all of them. No stern no stone left unturned. And they said they didn't feel threatened necessarily. Like he wasn't like, I'm gonna kill you if you talk to the police. He didn't like, he wasn't threatening. But they all admitted to feeling just very uneasy with him talking to them. So like he would let's say Susie Homemaker is scheduled to talk to the police in the morning. The night before Rick Bell pays her a visit. Hey, Susie. Hey, Rick, what's going on? Yeah, I hear you're talking to the FBI tomorrow. Yeah, well, you know, they called me down or whatever, but yeah, you know, I'm just gonna tell them what I know, which is not much. Yeah, okay. Just make sure you tell them you don't know just make sure you tell them you don't know much. Or you didn't see what happened. Okay, this is weird. I mean, I'm just gonna tell them what I know, which is not much. Okay, but when you say you don't know much, how how much is not much? You know, like he would do stuff like that. and there was also a waitress that came out and she said when she was scheduled, Rick came to her restaurant over and over and over. And over. And she just, it got to the point where she was just someone needs to follow me to my car because I don't feel safe. So in the midst of all of this, the Bell's home was rated as part of the investigation. Like the they came in tactical gear and they flipped that house upside down. Now, the Bell family say that they feel like it's it was completely unnecessary, but one thing that we know because we're true crime people at this point. Is whenever a search warrant is issued, there has to be probable cause. Whenever a search warrant is issued on a highly prominent, highly decorated FBI agent, there has to be probable cause. Take that how you want. In November 2013, Kendrick's body was exhumed again. And Dr. Bill Anderson looks at his body again. And so What he did this time, and he's just like, you know what? I want to, I want proof. Because he went back to them and told them, like, Kendrick died from hemorrhaging. This is blunt force trauma. And they told him he didn't know what he was talking about. They're just like, You've just been the Johnson family got in your head with all of their conspiracy theories. So he said, Okay, bet. I'm gonna have concrete evidence this time. So he went and he examined Kendrick's body, like with a fine-tooth comb. And he took samples and he made slides of All of the things that he found that were consistent with blood with blunt force trauma. He said, even the way your blood congeals after you pass, if you die of natural causes, it happens one way. If you die of trauma, it happens a different way. And he said he laid it all out in slides, like scientific proof that Kendrick was murdered and submitted them to investigators. And he was told that they don't want them and that he better not share them with the public. Good thing he doesn't listen because he did share them with the public. So in 2014, a hundred and twenty people were called to testify in front of a grand jury because at this point everyone in the town is talking. There are people at parties just like Kendrick was definitely murdered. There are people who were just like, I know who did it, I know what happened. And there was one story in particular where there was like this dude's brother who was drunk. And like completely spilled the beans and was like, I'm tired of holding in this secret. I know who killed Kendrick. So all of those people who are just like Kendrick was murdered. We know what happened. This is what we've heard. We heard it was them. Da-da-da-da. All of them were called in front of a grand jury. And every last one of them recanted their statements. Every one of them was just like, I was drunk that night. I don't really know what I'm talking about. I, you know, you know, we're just, it's just gossip. Just gossiping. I have no factual founding to this. Every last person that was called said that they were lying, or they were making stuff up to sound like they knew what they were talking about, or they were just drunk talking. Every last person out of 120. In 2015, the attorney in charge of Kendrick's case resigned without notice. He just came in one day and was just like, you know what? I've I've fought the good fight. I'm good. After attorney Moore's resignation, all of his cases were given to his successor, minus Kendrick's case, which was sent to an attorney in Ohio. Attorney Moore ended up moving to a private firm in Atlanta, and on June 20th, 2016, the Department of Justice informed Kenneth Sr. that all charges were going to be dropped and that the case was going to be closed due to not having evidence to charge anyone. In this phone call though, they did admit to Kenneth Sr. that they're pretty sure Kendrick was murdered. They just don't have the wherewithal or bandwidth or evidence to pro to prove it. And they can't figure out who did it. And so the case was closed. Kendrick's family refused to sit quietly. They filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Lowndes County Board of Education, plus the superintendent and the principal at Lowndes County High School. And the claims, baby, they were heavy. According to the lawsuit, Kendrick wasn't just a victim of some tragic accident. His family says that he was violently attacked, left seriously injured, in pain, and under extreme emotional distress before ultimately losing his life on January 10th, 2013. Now The suit doesn't point fingers at a specific person. It does not spell out exactly who was involved, but it did suggest that there was a racial element behind what happened. The bigger focus, though, is on the school system because Kendrick's family argues that the school officials dropped the ball big time. The civil suit claimed that school officials were negligent and violated Kendrick's constitutional rights, specifically his rights to equal protection. And here's where it gets even more concerning. The family said that this is not an isolated situation. They basically brought up the fact that Kendrick had been dealing with harassment because remember, from the time the fight happened to the time that Kendrick died, the Bell family did not leave him alone. Like they would just do little things, kind of like push up on him, brush up on him, say little things, do little things. And especially with Rick talking to him, I r I was about to say I really wish he would have like filed a restraining order or something, but honestly speaking, what would it have done? I'll get into that in my final thoughts. So they're just like Kendrick's been being harassed. He has, you know, th he's been going through all this thing ever since this fight. And they brought up the school bus incident. And so they did Eventually named Brian Bell, and they said that he had a specific pattern of provoking and attacking Kendrick, sometimes right in front of school staff. And even after they notified the school of the fight, even though they fussed about that and the fact that Kendrick was driven home in a squad car and Brian continued to go on with the game, they said that the school failed in basic safety responsibilities, like properly supervising students and keeping their surveillance systems actually working. The civil suit, however, was placed on hold. While attorney more investigated the case. And unfortunately, after he resigned, nothing came of the civil suit. They tried to refile the suit, and every judge, there were seven judges in Lowndes County, Georgia. Every judge recused themselves from presiding over the case, leaving the Johnson family up the creek without a paddle because there was no judge available to try their case. The Bell family did eventually counter sue the Johnsons. And they said that Kendrick's parents spread damaging claims online and in the media about their involvement in his death. And they didn't ask for an apology. They sued the Johnston family for one million dollars in damages. They also firmly deny having anything to do with Kendrick's death at all. The countersuit went as far as to say that the accusations made by the Johnston family have no legal footing, calling them unsupported and lacking any real evidence. According to Wikipedia, Georgia judge Richard Porta ruled that the Johnson family was wrong, and them and their attorney had to pay more than $292,000 in legal fees to the respondents of their civil suit, stating, quote, the testimony shows that they had no evidence to support their claims that the Bell brothers killed Kendrick or that any of the other defendants engaged in a conspiracy theory to conceal or the cause of manner or Of Kendrick's death. There's a published interview of Brian Bell, and the interviewer the interviewer is asking him, like, hey, now that we've talked, look me in my eyes and tell me that you did not kill Kendrick Johnson. I'm not gonna say he's lying. I really want you guys to look this up and see it for yourself. But the way that he looked, I was just like, you don't look like you're being truthful. You don't look like you being truthful. He just, I don't know. His eyes, he just, his eyes are so dark. And people who have like dark eyes, I just, mm-mm. Mm-mm. But anyway, so he's asked this question, and Brian looks at the interviewer straight in his eyes, and he says, I did not. I did not even see Kendrick that day. I would never have hurt Kendrick. He was my friend. Fun fact though. So the FBI, after they closed this case. They typed up a report. I don't know how like investigative work goes, but they typed up this long report with all of their findings and all of the things that they searched and looked. Now, the version of this report that is made to the public is heavily redacted. Like it basically says nothing. But the independent filmmaker that made the documentary Finding Kendrick Johnson. He was able to do some digging and found the unredacted version of that report. And in the report was a piece of evidence that no one had seen before. Basically, so you know how I said that the cameras inside the gym was missing footage, and the camera outside of the gym, the time was wrong. So apparently, as part of the FBI's report, they followed Kendrick and Brian. throughout the school the entire day on the surveillance cameras. Like they took all of the footage they could find and traced where Brian was and where Kendrick was throughout the day. Kendrick walked around with this bright, like when I tell you it's flu like bright, fluorescent, it's not neon yellow, but it's like if you know what an Invicta watch box looks like, it's like a bright, gaudy yellow. And so they're combing through the footage and the filmmaker, he's just like He's looking at Brian's footage and he's like, There goes that damn yellow folder. So the proof was right in front of him that not only did Kendrick see Brian, I mean, not only did Brian see Kendrick that day, Brian was standing directly behind Kendrick, looking at him in this footage. So it's just like you the proof, you're lying. Because you said that you had not seen him, you had not been near him, you had not walked near him, you had not talked to him, smell him, touched his dreads, nothing. And here we have you on surveillance directly behind him. And the the guy said the only way that he noticed it is because that folder was so freaking bright. And the all of the like in the redacted report, none of that is there. In addition, he's just like, okay, maybe this footage was there, but they didn't see it. It details on the very next page of the report Brian Bell seen standing directly behind Kendrick Johnson. But they said that he was never near him. Cool, cool, cool. So the further gag is the initial investigator on the case comb through the surveillance video, and he said that those frames that the filmmaker found. were never given to him. He was just like, had I seen this, this would have been totally different. Irregardless, wait, irregardless, it's not a word. Regardless, nothing came of that either. On March 10th, 2021, the case was officially reopened by Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Polk. She put up a $500,000 reward. it's a he. I thought Ashley was a lady. Okay, so he put a $500,000 reward of his own cash. I'm sorry, Ashley, for information leading to the conviction of anyone who killed Kendrick Johnson. According to Ashley, he and two other investigators poured through the case for 13 months before coming to this conclusion that they knew that what the forensic pathologist, what the family, what everybody was saying that Kendrick was murdered, they were just like, we looked over the evidence for 13 months and we also agree. Something in the milk is not clean. So they finally, they're just like, let's reopen this case. I put up my own money, $500,000 to anyone who can help me solve this case. And in January 2022, without a word, without a statement, without anything, that investigation also was closed with no charges filed. So Sheriff Polk did release a finding saying, quote, There was no homicide, no cover up, no conspiracy in the January 2013 death of Kendrick Johnson. It was simply a tragic and bizarre accident. He also stated that he would not be claiming that there was something wrong with the original investigation or that the original investigation's conclusion of an accidental death was wrong. He also went on to say that he does not consider the case to be a homicide and that the two brothers named previously, Brandon and Brian Bell, were not suspects. Finally, in March of 2026, the family of Kendrick Johnson filed a $10 billion federal lawsuit, accusing the judges, the ones that were recused, and the authorities of Lowndes County of covering up Kendrick's death. The lawsuit alleged that judges were that the judges that oversaw the case in that grand jury hearing were part of a conspiracy to falsify reports and dismiss the evidence pointing to the murder rather than an accidental death. As initially ruled. Unfortunately, a federal judge looked at that paper and was just like, girl, sir, his death was an accident and closed it. And now they're back where they started. To date, Kendrick's case does still remain closed, with the cause of death still being listed as positional asphyxia. And those are the facts in the case of Kendrick Johnson. Where are they now? In April 2015. In April 2015, Kenetta found herself in the headlines after she was shot in her lower back outside of a local convenience store. So apparently she's in the car with one of her friends and he was sitting directly behind her holding a gun and it accidentally discharged and shot her in the back. Charges were not initially filed in this case, but eventually charges were filed against Irvin Robinson. I don't know if he was ever officially arrested. I did not find his arrest record. It may be out there, but somebody please wrap Ken Yeta in a bubble, wrap Kenneth C senior in a bubble, wrap Kenneth Jr. in a bubble, protect Jackie at all costs. Like protect them at all costs. Like this is too much. Let us all join hands and virtually pray for the Johnson family because protect them at all costs. In 2015, Kenneth Sr. admits to receiving a call from the Department of Justice. Stating that Rick Bell was being investigated for obstruction of justice and corruption in the case of Kendrick Johnson. He was eventually told, though, that they refused to fire him or press charges against him, but they will pressure him to resign. And a few weeks later, spoiler alert, Rick Bell did officially resign from the FBI. Kenneth was also told that they were pretty sure, once again, that Kendrick's case was a homicide, but they just don't have enough evidence to prove it. Even though it's been 13 years, Jackie and Kenneth Johnson still continue to fight for the justice of their son Kendrick. There is a Kendrick Johnson memorial page on Facebook run by the family where they post updates. So if you're interested in continuing to follow this case as I am, I'm gonna be seeing what they post on the page. Which brings me to my final thoughts. I have been waiting for my final thoughts. Since I started this episode, because, you know, I try to be integral. I want to give you the facts. And even though the facts of this case are so convoluted, I wanted to stay as close to the truth as humanly possible. But now that I'm in my final thoughts and I have given you the facts of the case, I can talk trash. Do y'all think Brandon and Brian Bell did it? I am led to believe that they did. Because out of all of the students of the school, everybody talked. Everybody talked to investigators. They were the only ones that lawyered up immediately. They didn't say nothing to nobody. And it's kind of like this thing where it's like this unspoken truth, like, yeah, we know they did it, but we can't prove it. But I feel like there is enough. I feel like there's enough. I feel like there's enough. And even if there's not enough evidence to charge Brandon and Brian Bell. There's enough evidence to say this was a homicide. Or even if there's not enough evidence to say this was a homicide, there's enough as there's enough evidence to say this was not positional asphyxia. There's plenty of evidence. Where are his organs? Where are his organs? Why didn't y'all tell them that y'all removed that boy's organs? Why is everybody saying one thing and then coming back? I think that. Attorney Moore was bothersome, but Sheriff Ashley Polk, like literally going into it. There were so many people that just went into it, like, no, this is BS. We know it's BS. We're gonna investigate this and we're gonna find the truth. And then within a year, okay. It you're right. He suffocated. What were we thinking? Huh? Like, I just the bothersome part to me about this case is it does not make sense. And you guys keep trying to tell his family to make it make sense. And they we like they can't. You cannot tell me. You can't pee on my back and call it rain. I'm sorry. And the fact that this is just carried on and carried out, this is just I hope you guys I hope I did a good enough job in telling this story because like I said, this case was so hard to follow. For everything that was done, there were so many retractions, so many things redacted, so many news links that you would click on that don't exist. Just so much stuff. First of all, I believe in conspiracy theories. I think that I believe in conspiracy theories. I could go down I can go on a tangent, but I truly do believe that nothing that we see physically is as it seems. I believe we are lied to regularly. But this, I feel like everybody, like law enforcement, the FBI, local agents, local news, I feel like everyone is just like, Johnson family, you got your answers, give it rest. But the truth of the matter is if you guys gave them answers that made sense, they would lay back. They would be done. If you guys gave them Even if you said, even if this was just a cold case, like we know he was murdered, we just cannot prove it. We don't have sufficient evidence. I feel like they would still be fighting for the truth and for answers, but they would understand that okay, there isn't enough evidence. And then we can go from there, but at least acknowledge the fact that he did not suffocate. He didn't. Even if you don't think he was murdered, acknowledge the fact that he was he did not suffocate. Acknowledge the fact that that ME's report was BS. Acknowledge the fact that why would seven judges recuse themselves from even hearing the case of a wrongful death lawsuit? They didn't even want to hear it. Like everybody in everybody that was involved can sincerely burn in hell. The entire Ben Bell family burn in hell. Fire upon your box side. Law enforcement of Valdasta and Lowndes County, y'all can go right behind them. And I pray that there's Vaseline on, I mean, gasoline on your eyelids. Go to hell. All of you. You owe that family answers. And I I, Johnson family, I don't know if y'all will ever listen to this. I'm a small time creator for now. But I'm praying for y'all. And I sincerely pray that you all do not depart this earth without justice for your son. I truly do. I don't want it to be like George Stinney's case, where it was like a hundred years later and everybody that mattered died. And then his great, great, great, great grandnieces and nephews were the ones to say, finally, justice for our uncle. No. May that not be his story. I pray sincerely, sincerely. That you all get the answers that you're looking for. And I pray that there's justice in this case because you cannot tell me. You cannot tell me that he was not murdered. The Bell family can burn in hell. The little drunk boy at the party that was just like, my gosh, he confessed to me, but I just I go to hell. Go to hell. All of you. Because the fact that anyone can sit there, he was 17 years old. He was a sophomore in high school. He had his entire Life ahead of him. For anybody that would cover up the fact that someone brutally murdered this boy, you deserve to burn in hell. And if you're listening, I hope that my voice just condemns you so much and convicts you so much that you're just like, I gotta say something and I don't care what happens. Y'all can all go to hell. I will repent later, but y'all can all go to hell. Sincerely. Burn. And that's the end of this episode. Y'all can all go to hell. What a Tori Lane's daddy said, as sure as heaven meets the earth, rotation will crumble. Valdasta, I hope y'all crops dry up, except for the people that were not involved. I'm going to keep it cute next week. Reese this case and the Parkland case has done numbers on my emotional state. And I think I just need to get back to crash outs. Just so, like the next few weeks, I just gotta do cases of like just stupid crash-outs. So please bear with me because this I lost sleep over this. I hope they get the answers that they deserve.
