- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 119 once
- 0:20again. We are in verses 17 through 24,
- 0:24verses 17 through 24. We mentioned as we began Psalm
- 0:30119 that Psalm 119 is made-up of 22 sections, and in each of
- 0:36those sections there are several verses, and all of the verses
- 0:40within that section start with the same Hebrew letter.
- 0:45So it goes all the way, if you will think A-Z through the
- 0:50Hebrew alphabet and all of the different sections.
- 0:53We have, you know, 27 letters in our alphabet.
- 0:56The Hebrew people had 22 letters in their alphabet.
- 1:01And all of the sections talk about the Word of God and
- 1:06different ways in which the psalmist thinks about the Word
- 1:08of God, what the Word of God does for them, their passion
- 1:14about people that don't follow the Word of God.
- 1:18All of that is included in this. So we're going to be learning
- 1:21more about Scripture today as we look at verses 17 through 24
- 1:26that all start with the Hebrew letter gamel.
- 1:31So this is one section of Psalm 119 that especially focuses on
- 1:37encountering difficulties with the Word of God in mind.
- 1:43So I think this will be helpful probably for me, definitely for
- 1:47me, even if it's not helpful for anyone else.
- 1:50But I hope that it's a blessing to you as well.
- 1:52Let's begin reading. Deal generously with your
- 1:56servant so that I might live. Then I will keep your word.
- 2:01Open my eyes so that I may contemplate wondrous things from
- 2:06your instruction. I am a resident alien on Earth.
- 2:10Do not hide your commands from me.
- 2:13I'm continually overcome with longing for your judgements.
- 2:19You rebuke the arrogant, the ones under a curse who wander
- 2:23from your commands. Take insult and contempt away
- 2:28from me, for I have kept your decrees.
- 2:32Though Princess, sit together speaking against me.
- 2:35Your servant will think about your statutes.
- 2:38Your decrees are my delight and my counselors.
- 2:43So here, as I've mentioned, each time there's some different
- 2:46words that are used to describe God's word.
- 2:50So in verse 17 you have your word or verse 18 your
- 2:55instruction, verse 19, your commands, verse 20, your
- 2:59judgments, verse 21, your commands again, verse 22 your
- 3:04decrees, verse 23 your statutes, and then verse 24 your decrees
- 3:10once again. And so here it's different ways
- 3:13to think about the word of God. It is what He speaks.
- 3:16It's His message to us. It is His instructions for how
- 3:20we ought to live our lives. It's His judgement as the judge
- 3:25of all the earth and the one who will do what is right and the
- 3:28one who calls us to do what is right.
- 3:31He is the one that commands us, that instructs us to go in the
- 3:34correct way. It's the statutes, It's the
- 3:36things that are pillars of how we are to behave as people, as
- 3:43those living on God's green earth, so to speak.
- 3:47So let's begin in verse #17 He says, deal generously with your
- 3:52servant so that I might live, then I will keep your word.
- 3:57He says God let's let's make a deal.
- 4:00You have me live because right now I'm encountering difficulty
- 4:04with people and I am fearing for my life.
- 4:07But God, as you keep me alive, if I'm alive, then I am going to
- 4:11be keeping your word. God, I will do what you say for
- 4:14as long as I am alive. As I think about maybe the way
- 4:19that people often try and reason with God, like God, if you have
- 4:26me get married in this next year, like I find my spouse in
- 4:30this next year, well then I'll give my life to you or God.
- 4:34If you have me win the lottery, then I'll, you know, be generous
- 4:37or something to you. Here the psalmist just says,
- 4:41God, keep me alive and I will keep your word as long as I am
- 4:47living. And I don't know, that seems
- 4:49like a pretty great deal that might be there.
- 4:53And what a joy that it is God that keeps us alive moment by
- 4:56moment. He gives the breath in our
- 4:59lungs. He allows our heart to keep on
- 5:01beating. He gives us the nutrition that
- 5:03we need. He gives us shelter.
- 5:06He gives us clothing and I think of so many people in our world
- 5:10right now that do not have some of those amenities, some of
- 5:15those necessities to life. And so I want to encourage you
- 5:19as the Lord prospers you, if you've got, you know, 17 coats,
- 5:23you can probably do without 5 or 10 of those coats maybe.
- 5:27And so you might be able to give to someone else that is in need
- 5:32as God deals generously with you, deal generously with
- 5:35others. You can be the hands and feet of
- 5:37Jesus providing for people's needs that they can say, yeah,
- 5:40God gave me this jacket through one of his hands.
- 5:44He gave me this jacket through one of his servants.
- 5:49Verse #18 This solemist that is endangered and just wants to say
- 5:55like God, keep me alive and as long as I'm alive, I am keeping
- 5:58your word. He says, open my eyes so that I
- 6:02may contemplate wondrous things from your instruction.
- 6:06There's so many great words and pictures even just within this
- 6:09one verse. He says, open my eyes.
- 6:12There's a great old song. Open the eyes of my heart.
- 6:14Lord, I want to see you, to see you high and lifted up, shining
- 6:19in the light of your glory. Pour out your power and love as
- 6:22we sing, holy, holy, holy. And so this is the cry that the
- 6:27psalmist here has. He says, God, I don't see things
- 6:31from your word or I don't see things in this world in the way
- 6:36that I should be. I am not seeing how incredible
- 6:40and wondrous your word is or what life with you is like, what
- 6:46following and obeying you, what that results in.
- 6:50So God, would you open my eyes? I can think of the story of
- 6:54Elisha and his servant, as the king of Syria was incredibly mad
- 6:58at Elisha, as God had told Elisha a couple different times
- 7:03about the battle plans that Syria had, and so Israel had
- 7:06thwarted Syrian battle plans against them.
- 7:10And so finally, the king of Syria came with an army and
- 7:13surrounded the town where Elisha and his servant were in.
- 7:17And as the servant looked out, he was incredibly scared.
- 7:21But Elisha looked out and he was not scared.
- 7:24And he prayed that God would open the eyes of his servant.
- 7:28And as God opened, if you will, the spiritual blinders off of
- 7:32the servant's eyes, he saw that there was an even larger army of
- 7:38angels surrounding the king of Syria and all of his forces that
- 7:43were surrounding the city. And so as he could see
- 7:46spiritually what was happening that God was protecting that God
- 7:49was the one that he has more might, he is stronger, he's got
- 7:53a bigger army that there could be confidence placed in the
- 7:57Lord. And so this is what I pray God,
- 7:59would you open my eyes so that I can see how incredible you are
- 8:03that when I'm reading through Psalm 119 and these verses 17
- 8:07through 24, then I'll start with the letter Gamel that I'm not
- 8:11just doing it so that I can, you know, satisfy like an OCD thing.
- 8:16I've got to finish all of book 5 of of Psalms.
- 8:20I don't want it to just be that I I don't want to be doing this
- 8:22just because it's a habit. I want to be in the word of God
- 8:27and contemplate, think about over and over again and go.
- 8:32I never thought about this aspect of it before this thing
- 8:35before. I want to contemplate wondrous
- 8:38things from the instruction of God.
- 8:40Would you pray each and every time that you are reading the
- 8:43word of God, listening to the word of God, maybe sitting under
- 8:46preaching that you would say, God open my eyes so that I can
- 8:50contemplate wondrous things from your instruction.
- 8:55Verse #19 He says I'm a resident alien on earth.
- 8:59Do not hide your commands from me.
- 9:02One could definitely picture David writing this in his
- 9:05wilderness wanderings as he was running from Saul who was king
- 9:09over Israel. And there were many people that
- 9:12wanted David dead and they were pursuing him.
- 9:14The Philistines wanted David dead and they were pursuing him.
- 9:17And he could echo with here the psalmist, or if he was the one
- 9:22that wrote this particular Psalm, he would say, I don't
- 9:25have a home here. I'm just a resident alien.
- 9:28And everywhere I go, it's not really the place that I'm going
- 9:31to be putting down roots and raising generations of my family
- 9:34on. And so he says, God, I don't
- 9:37have a home here on earth. I want a home in your word that
- 9:41when I hear from you, I go, yes, this is what I was made for.
- 9:46I can rest here. I can find my identity and my
- 9:50purpose and my joy. Not in a country or nation, but
- 9:56in the word of God. So he says don't hide your
- 9:58commands from me. He says I don't know where I'm
- 10:00living. I don't know where I'm staying
- 10:02forever, but I do want to know what you have for me.
- 10:05God. Do you want to know what the
- 10:06commands of God are for you? Sometimes people want to know
- 10:10the things that God has not made known and like will not make
- 10:14known to you. Emphatically, you have a 15 year
- 10:18old that they're like, God, show me who my spouse is going to be.
- 10:21Or you might have someone that is getting out of college and
- 10:24they're like, God, show me the company that I'm going to be
- 10:28working for. And certainly it's not a problem
- 10:30to ask God for that. But we ask God questions about
- 10:34the unknown, but we don't always ask God.
- 10:37God, would you remind me? Would you if you will strike my
- 10:40heart when I am sinning against you, when I am not treating
- 10:46others well, when I'm being unkind, when I am being maybe
- 10:50unfaithful in idolatry against you, that I love something else
- 10:53more than I love you? Would we ask that God not hide
- 10:57his commands from us? That we say, God, I want to know
- 11:01what you want me to do and I will obey whatever it is that
- 11:05you have for me. Verse #20 He says, I'm
- 11:08continually overcome with longing for your judgments.
- 11:13That he goes, man, I, I really wish I knew what God wanted me
- 11:18to do. He says I want to hear from God.
- 11:21The times in my life where I have maybe through sickness or I
- 11:29don't really know that it's ever happened during the time of
- 11:31travel for me. But when I haven't been able to
- 11:35be at church for a while, when I haven't been able to join with
- 11:38God's people. Here's some preaching, here's
- 11:41some teaching from the word of God.
- 11:43Man, by the end of that time, like right before I'm actually
- 11:47able to get back into the swing of things and I'm like, man, I
- 11:51really, really miss hearing about the Lord.
- 11:54I miss hearing the encouragement and the testimonies from other
- 11:57people about who God is, what he's doing for them.
- 12:00I really want to hear about God. And this is the heart of this
- 12:05psalmist that he says, I'm continually overcome with
- 12:08longing for your judgments. Do you miss the word of God when
- 12:14you're when you're not reading it?
- 12:16Or is it like, Oh, yeah, I guess it's been like four or five
- 12:18days. Yeah, I guess I should, I should
- 12:21get back to it. Or do you have a continual
- 12:24overcoming longing for the word of God?
- 12:28Verse #21 Here the psalmist talks to the Lord and he says
- 12:32you rebuke the arrogant, the ones under a curse.
- 12:37A person that is proud is a person that is not walking in
- 12:40the grace and humility and empowerment and gifting of God.
- 12:44A person that is proud is living under a curse.
- 12:47You can think about James chapter 4.
- 12:49For God resists the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
- 12:54And if you're not under grace, then you are under a curse.
- 12:58And so may we eschew pride in our life.
- 13:01We are nothing special. The Lord is someone special, and
- 13:05so may we value God, may we value his people, that we are
- 13:10not better than any other person on this planet.
- 13:13It doesn't matter what their difficulties, what their foibles
- 13:16are so mean. We walk in humility, not in
- 13:19arrogance. I want to walk in the blessing
- 13:21of God, even if it means that I have to eat some humble pie.
- 13:26I'd much rather do that and be under the blessing of God's
- 13:29grace than be under the curse of being.
- 13:33Scripture would say, you know these six things the Lord hates?
- 13:37Yes, seven are detestable to him.
- 13:39They're an abomination to him. And the very first one is a
- 13:43proud look. And so may we not have arrogance
- 13:48and pride. Instead, may we like, well, kind
- 13:52of reverse of what the arrogant ones are doing in this verse.
- 13:55He says, who wander from your commands instead of wandering
- 13:58away from the commands of God. This isn't this word wander.
- 14:02It's not even like an intentional, I'm going to choose
- 14:05to say no to God. It's unintentionally.
- 14:08I'm just wandering away from the commands of God.
- 14:10May we say no, I have to pursue the commands of God.
- 14:14That's my mission each and every day because I don't have the
- 14:19know how. I don't have the wisdom to go
- 14:22through this life in the way that I should.
- 14:24The only one who knows how I should live my life is the Lord.
- 14:28And so I'm going to seek after His commands.
- 14:31Don't wander away from the commands of God.
- 14:33Pursue the commands of God that I want to know it.
- 14:35And I've got that longing that is there for God's commands.
- 14:40Verse #22 he says, take insult and contempt away from me, for I
- 14:46have kept your decrees here. Insult and contempt.
- 14:51This is the solemus. Enemies is just heaping up
- 14:55insults against this person in ways in which they despise him,
- 15:01that they have contempt for him. As a pastor I get this all the
- 15:06time. I was telling one of my friends
- 15:08the other day they were like, hey, you know, like how?
- 15:11How often there there was something that had come up and
- 15:15they were like, oh, I, I didn't know you, you knew about that.
- 15:18And I was like, oh, to be honest with you, about every two weeks
- 15:22I, I hear about something that someone's unhappy with me or
- 15:26said something that was kind of slanderous about me.
- 15:29And this verse is an encouragement for me.
- 15:32The answer to the attacks of mankind is not like, OK, let's
- 15:38return it back on their head. No, it's God.
- 15:42Would you help me to keep your decrees?
- 15:45And then God, as I'm following you, you know who I am.
- 15:49And so you deal with these people.
- 15:51If there's something that I really do need to change, then
- 15:53wonderful. Like that goes back to humility.
- 15:56Let me walk closer with Jesus because he's my aim.
- 16:00But if there is undeserved insults and contempt that I
- 16:04haven't earned, then God would you take it away?
- 16:07You are the just one. And so God may you, if you will
- 16:12let God be the God of vengeance. I'm just going to focus on my
- 16:15relationship with the Lord. Verse 23 though princes sit
- 16:21together speaking against me. And certainly here one could
- 16:24think of Saul as he is considering speaking against
- 16:27David and not the king of Gath, but some of the other Philistine
- 16:34kings right before Saul dies. And then David becomes king over
- 16:40Judah. Right before that, the king of
- 16:43Gath says, oh, yeah, David is super great.
- 16:48And he's like gone on all of these missions for me.
- 16:50He didn't know that David was actually like secretly fighting
- 16:54for Israel and against the king of Gath.
- 16:57But the king of Gath didn't know that because David didn't leave
- 17:00like he had. He had total battlefield
- 17:03victory. And so there was no one to come
- 17:05back and like tattle to the king of Gath to say, oh, no, like
- 17:10David did this or that for Israel and not for us.
- 17:14And the other Philistine kings, as the king of Gath said, hey,
- 17:17let's bring David and his men to fight against Saul and the
- 17:21children of Israel. The other Philistine kings were
- 17:23like, there's no way we are not bringing David.
- 17:26Like, do you remember the songs that they used to sing?
- 17:28Saul is slain as thousands, but David his 10s of thousands,
- 17:31we're not bringing David. And so here I can think of David
- 17:35riding this, these Princess, these kings of the Philistines
- 17:37sitting together speaking against David.
- 17:40He says, your servant will think about your statutes.
- 17:43I've heard the phrase before, and this is probably, this isn't
- 17:47exactly what verse 23 is saying, though it's similar in some
- 17:51respects. So small people talk about
- 17:53people, big people talk about ideas.
- 17:57And the thought there is when you blame an individual for
- 18:01stuff versus hey, here's a better way to think about
- 18:04something, here's a better process versus Oh, well, so and
- 18:08so is just that way or so and so really dropped the ball on this
- 18:13or man, I just really hate so and so versus people that have a
- 18:18better outlook on life. They're talking through ways of
- 18:23improvement and better processes and leadership, things that
- 18:27they're learning. That's a better way to live your
- 18:29life rather than complaining about people.
- 18:32And here I can kind of see a little bit of where some of the
- 18:35truth of that statement could even come from.
- 18:38That is, Princess, speak against David or whoever the psalmist
- 18:42is. The psalmist says, I'm not going
- 18:44to bother thinking about them. I'm going to think about your
- 18:47statutes. Your attention is always better
- 18:49served by focusing on the word and way of God rather than on
- 18:55people that you don't like. Always 100% of the time, I
- 18:59promise you. Then verse 24, this portion of
- 19:03the Psalm ends. Your decrees are my delight and
- 19:07my counselors says God, what you say I am super happy with.
- 19:11As I think about your worship, as I think about following you,
- 19:15as I think about being faithful to my spouse, as I think about
- 19:19honoring my parents, as I think about speaking the truth to
- 19:22other people, as I think about respecting other people's
- 19:25property, as I think about respecting life, that it belongs
- 19:30to others. And as God is the one that has
- 19:33given life, God is the one that should take life.
- 19:35It doesn't belong to me. And so I don't harbor hatred or
- 19:38a desire for other people to be gone from the world or from my
- 19:42life. If instead I am operating
- 19:45according to God's decrees as I delight in the decrees of God,
- 19:49he says, your decrees are my delight and my counselors.
- 19:52When I need to know what to do, I'm not turning just to other
- 19:57humans. I'm turning to the perfect word
- 20:01of God. And the word of God tells me how
- 20:04I should behave, how I should act, what I should think even.
- 20:08And so as I do that, the Word of God shapes the way that I
- 20:13experience difficulty even with other people in life.
- 20:17If I'm scared for my life, if people are insulting me as
- 20:21others dislike me, as I don't feel like I have a settled
- 20:25place, I can find a settled. Place in the word of God and
- 20:30when I don't have human counselors, I have the word of
- 20:32God to counsel me. And I can have a great longing
- 20:35for the judgments of God and not focus on how great I am and puff
- 20:40myself up with arrogance and be under a curse as a result.
- 20:44Instead, I can experience grace as I listen to scripture.
- 20:49I hope that this portion of Scripture was an encouragement
- 20:53to you. Next episode we're going to be
- 20:55in verses 25 through 32 and looking forward to that time
- 20:59together. Thank you for tuning in.
