- 0:00Speaker 1: To ask about this and other things around Major League Baseball.
- 0:04Speaker 1: We're joined by Bob Nightingale, senior columnists for the sport
- 0:07Speaker 1: for USA Today.
- 0:08Speaker 2: He's been covering it for a long time.
- 0:09Speaker 1: He and I covered the America League West together back
- 0:12Speaker 1: in the early two thousand when I was covering the
- 0:13Speaker 1: A's for the secondment will.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Be and Bob Knight now joined us right now in
- 0:16Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Highline. Hello, sir.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And Greg, I have been well, how have you been
- 0:24Speaker 1: in this new season and where are your travels taking
- 0:27Speaker 1: here lately?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yeah? Pretty much out West and only a couple of
- 0:34Speaker 3: times San Francisco, about to go to Chicago and might
- 0:39Speaker 3: do the Vegas Series two coming up once the A's
- 0:42Speaker 3: and Brewers.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Okay, so let me ask you about this piggybacking the
- 0:46Speaker 1: Mariners are doing with Castilla, at least Castillo and Bryce Miller.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They have six healthy starters.
- 0:51Speaker 1: They're trying to do it in five spots by putting
- 0:54Speaker 1: Miller in Castillo, by pitching him on the same day
- 0:56Speaker 1: and alternating who starts who relieves. Have you ever seen
- 0:59Speaker 1: that is done successfully or otherwise in Major League Baseball?
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, it's been, It's been done yeah, you see it
- 1:09Speaker 3: more in spring training actually than the regular season. But yeah,
- 1:13Speaker 3: I mean that's a you know, pretty miss extended version
- 1:16Speaker 3: of the opener when a guy goes win or two
- 1:18Speaker 3: winnings and a guy comes comes in. You know, we
- 1:20Speaker 3: see that a lot, but we don't really see it
- 1:25Speaker 3: with two veteran pitchers like this, particularly in Castillo's thing.
- 1:30Speaker 3: So you can create, you know, ruffle some feathers and hey,
- 1:34Speaker 3: when you know, despite what people say, wins mean a
- 1:37Speaker 3: lot to where stars and for Castillo, you know, Crew
- 1:40Speaker 3: is along and about to get a win to his
- 1:43Speaker 3: career total. And how that taken away, you know, give
- 1:46Speaker 3: me very frustrating.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Do you see this as sustainable between these two guys
- 1:50Speaker 1: that results say the same and or could you see
- 1:53Speaker 1: they have to make a change and can't let Kestillo
- 1:55Speaker 1: at his status at thirty four, three time All Star,
- 1:58Speaker 1: twenty four million dollars pitcher, he's they're going to have
- 2:00Speaker 1: to do something with him, either start him or try
- 2:02Speaker 1: to trade him, or what would they would do with him?
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you got to do either, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 3: start her and trade him or you say, you know what,
- 2:11Speaker 3: you're a long man in a bullpen. You know, the
- 2:13Speaker 3: Damacs just did that with Brandon Fott and then he's
- 2:16Speaker 3: been a regular in the rotation. Me is a lanket,
- 2:20Speaker 3: but you know, he's not better than the other five guys.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And I think you know, with Castillo's saying, they may
- 2:25Speaker 3: tell him, hey, pitch better and we'll not someone else
- 2:28Speaker 3: to the bullpen. But you're our guy for now. You
- 2:32Speaker 3: hate to You hate to trade him just because something
- 2:35Speaker 3: always happens to pitchers. You know, someone can go, someone's
- 2:38Speaker 3: gonna start struggling, someone can get hurt. So you know,
- 2:42Speaker 3: it's not like you can move that contract anyway. You'll
- 2:44Speaker 3: be giving them away, and you know they certainly don't
- 2:47Speaker 3: want to do that.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Bob Nightingale, senior columnists in Major League Baseball for USA,
- 2:53Speaker 1: joining us on the Beacon Plumbing hotline. Sir, what is
- 2:56Speaker 1: surprised you, Bob about the early season? Players or disappointments
- 3:01Speaker 1: are surprised or maybe teams and and you look at
- 3:04Speaker 1: the American League and the Rays have really jumped out
- 3:08Speaker 1: in the American League East, but that's out of it.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The Cleveland's gotten hot lately. The Yankees have been there
- 3:13Speaker 1: since the start of the season. Now the Rays have
- 3:14Speaker 1: overtaken him, but the rest of America League has been
- 3:16Speaker 1: very mediocre. And then in the National League Dodgers, Padrey
- 3:20Speaker 1: is trying to keep pace with the Dodgers again, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: now the Cubs are reeling. I don't know how much
- 3:26Speaker 1: you've looked into the ten game losing streak for the Cubs,
- 3:29Speaker 1: but what if you say, is still at the most
- 3:31Speaker 1: of you for two months into the season.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, on the on the positive side, it
- 3:37Speaker 3: certainly the Rays and Saint Louis Cardinals and the Cordinals
- 3:40Speaker 3: are in a full scale rebuild. I mean game away
- 3:43Speaker 3: guys and wayland Own Sun and Gray and uh, you
- 3:47Speaker 3: know Donovan. Uh, you know they trade a him at
- 3:49Speaker 3: least to get someone back return. So you know, I
- 3:53Speaker 3: don't know how long it will last for Saint Louis,
- 3:55Speaker 3: but been a huge, huge surprise, and then the flip
- 3:59Speaker 3: in I think, you know, the big storylines have just
- 4:00Speaker 3: been how bad the mess have been with the biggest
- 4:03Speaker 3: payroll in baseball, and how bad the Tigers have been.
- 4:06Speaker 3: The Tiger's been so bad, you know that when Scuba
- 4:10Speaker 3: does come off the Angel list, they're gonna have no
- 4:12Speaker 3: choice but to trade them in. Uh. And he'll be
- 4:15Speaker 3: one of the most you know, coveted guys in the
- 4:18Speaker 3: trade deadline, simply maybe going back to c c Sybatthew days,
- 4:21Speaker 3: going to Washing Brewers.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Bob, what struggling contender do you think is most likely
- 4:27Speaker 4: to turn their season around in the second half and why?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Well, I certainly think Seattle turns it on and they
- 4:36Speaker 3: just have too much talent, too much pitching. I think
- 4:39Speaker 3: they pull away from the the A's. You know, Texas
- 4:44Speaker 3: has been a big disappointment. Uh. Yeah, I thought it'd
- 4:47Speaker 3: be kind of a showdown between the Rangers and Mariners.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So I still think the Mariners, you know, pull this out.
- 4:54Speaker 3: We'll see if the Rangers getting better. But I think
- 4:57Speaker 3: it's you know, I just think the A's are one
- 5:00Speaker 3: year away. Uh. I think in the Al Central, I
- 5:03Speaker 3: think that thing's over. I think Cleveland wins it. I
- 5:06Speaker 3: still think the uh you know, Rays aren't give me
- 5:09Speaker 3: aggressive the trade deadline. You know, the Yankees will be
- 5:12Speaker 3: and then the uh you know, nationally West, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 3: Dodgers again, the Potters are playing over their heads for
- 5:18Speaker 3: a long time. You know, Diamondbacks are playing a lot
- 5:21Speaker 3: better now, but yet you know, they played the thirteenth
- 5:24Speaker 3: straight games now against the Giants and Rockies. So just
- 5:27Speaker 3: you know, beating up to the worst teams and to
- 5:29Speaker 3: the worst teams in baseball, you know, the Brewers. You know,
- 5:32Speaker 3: every year everybody picks the Cubs win that thing, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and every year the Brewers brus get the last laugh. Uh.
- 5:39Speaker 3: In Atlanta's back to being Atlanta again. I mean a
- 5:42Speaker 3: powerhouse in Atlanta, maybe the best team in baseball.
- 5:45Speaker 4: From your conversations with folks around the league, do the
- 5:49Speaker 4: Settle Manners still have the reputation of that legitimate contender
- 5:53Speaker 4: or are some executives starting to question whether this core
- 5:56Speaker 4: can actually break through?
- 6:01Speaker 3: Well? Yeah, I mean at least you know last year,
- 6:03Speaker 3: you know, gaming hope, like okay, one game away from
- 6:05Speaker 3: the uh games of.
- 6:06Speaker 2: The World Series.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Uh, you know, they do have the same you know,
- 6:11Speaker 3: a lot of guys at the same position, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 3: say right field and stuff. You don't need that you know,
- 6:15Speaker 3: many guys. Uh, so you know, everybody needs bats. It
- 6:19Speaker 3: seems like so I think at some point they you know,
- 6:21Speaker 3: trade away one or two of those guys the trade deadline,
- 6:25Speaker 3: you know, and get what they really want.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:29Speaker 3: They could certainly use another back end closer to go
- 6:31Speaker 3: with you knows, uh that way you can you know
- 6:34Speaker 3: mix a match you know back there and uh yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 3: right now on paper, and you would say the Yankees
- 6:41Speaker 3: are you know, the heavy favorite to get to World
- 6:43Speaker 3: Series the American League. Uh, you know they got raised
- 6:46Speaker 3: in Cleveland and Seattle, so probably put Le's chances that
- 6:49Speaker 3: you know, fourth at this juncture. But with their with
- 6:53Speaker 3: their starting rotation, you know they can they can scare
- 6:55Speaker 3: anybody to come postseason.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Is Bob Nightingale, Senior Baseball call Major League Baseball commiss
- 7:01Speaker 1: for the US today joining us in the Beacon plumbing hogh,
- 7:03Speaker 1: And I'm gonna go back to Terrek Scrubel.
- 7:05Speaker 2: You mentioned the Tigers twenty one and thirty four.
- 7:08Speaker 1: That's nine out of ten, ten games back of the
- 7:11Speaker 1: Guardians who've caught fire in the Central. You've already declared
- 7:14Speaker 1: the Guardians that race is over in the Central. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: you said when Scruble comes back, it sounds like sooner
- 7:20Speaker 1: than anticipated that they're gonna have to trade him. And
- 7:23Speaker 1: that's from you knowing that his contract was just for
- 7:25Speaker 1: one year, the thirty record thirty two million dollar arbitration
- 7:28Speaker 1: that he won the former Seattle U star Terrek Scrubele is,
- 7:33Speaker 1: do you think that's the only alternative for the Tigers.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You don't see him resigning in Detroit, and you don't
- 7:38Speaker 1: see the Tigers making any kind of return to where
- 7:41Speaker 1: they were last year to get it even close to Cleveland.
- 7:43Speaker 1: You think it's a FATA complete that Scooble gets traded.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I do. I just you know, they've been playing so bad,
- 7:51Speaker 3: and Casey Maiz has been fine in the rotation, but
- 7:54Speaker 3: Jack Flaherty has struggled, and so as the restaurant rotation.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Berl Anderslan made one start. So no, I think they're
- 8:01Speaker 3: gonna have to face the reality here. And uh, you
- 8:03Speaker 3: know they're going to have to have him start a
- 8:05Speaker 3: few times for every to watch him. I'm sure they'll
- 8:08Speaker 3: be very careful, you know, keeping his workload down, you know,
- 8:12Speaker 3: maybe starting you know fournings at the time, five innings
- 8:15Speaker 3: here and there, that that sort of thing. But no,
- 8:17Speaker 3: I think they get recoup anything. You know, they got
- 8:20Speaker 3: to move Schooba. Remember when they gave him that, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 3: when he lost the or when the Tigers lost the
- 8:26Speaker 3: arbitration hearing. You'll never once they make a counter offer.
- 8:29Speaker 3: They haven't tried to resign him to a to an
- 8:33Speaker 3: extension in more than two years, so I think they
- 8:36Speaker 3: know that there's zero chance of them retaining him.
- 8:39Speaker 2: What kind of haul would Terrek Scouble get in a
- 8:41Speaker 2: July trade deadline deal?
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they got to get least, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 3: probably two of a team's top fifteen prospects and you
- 8:52Speaker 3: know a third guy along the way. I mean, it's
- 8:55Speaker 3: just a uh, you know, probably a pure rental and
- 8:59Speaker 3: uh and you know you're getting him pretty much for
- 9:01Speaker 3: the for the postseason. So okay, we'll have this guy
- 9:04Speaker 3: in the top of the rotation. So you can see
- 9:06Speaker 3: teams like the uh, you know, the Yankees and Blue Jays, Dodgers,
- 9:11Speaker 3: Podreys are the four teams that that stand out you
- 9:14Speaker 3: talk to different teams that would probably be the most
- 9:16Speaker 3: aggressive trying to get them. The Pods, you know, new ownerships,
- 9:21Speaker 3: you know they'll they're only take on their money. But
- 9:23Speaker 3: the Padres just hardly have any prospects left from all
- 9:26Speaker 3: the moves they made.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Hmmm, that's something to watch. Trek Scoogle.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Let's see when he gets back, first of all, if
- 9:32Speaker 1: he gets back, and how he plays after that. Bob Night,
- 9:34Speaker 1: Noil USA today joining us in the Beacon Plumbing hotline
- 9:36Speaker 1: here in ninety three point three KJR FM Sarry, you've
- 9:39Speaker 1: covered ball for day or two. What do you think
- 9:41Speaker 1: of the ABS pitch challenging system?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Do you like it?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Does it worked better worse than you thought? What do
- 9:47Speaker 2: you think of it?
- 9:50Speaker 3: It's probably I thought. The only thing at all like
- 9:52Speaker 3: is you know, the uh. I think they should have
- 9:54Speaker 3: some kind of buffer zone in there. I mean, some
- 9:56Speaker 3: of these pitches are you know, missing like a uh
- 9:59Speaker 3: you know, harnt of an inch like you like really
- 10:02Speaker 3: and you know, overturned the same as the son misses
- 10:04Speaker 3: by you know, uh, you know, three or four inches. So,
- 10:08Speaker 3: but you know, the crowd seems to like it. I
- 10:11Speaker 3: like having just too.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Uh.
- 10:13Speaker 3: You know, for a team, you got use some strategy
- 10:15Speaker 3: behind it.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I used to, don't.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I just hope they don't go to a full ABS system,
- 10:18Speaker 3: and I'm sure it's going to come one day. Yeah,
- 10:21Speaker 3: I still have to have the human elements in the game,
- 10:23Speaker 3: but it's a uh yeah, it's good, particularly for late innings. Uh,
- 10:27Speaker 3: you know, making sure that the call the calls are right.
- 10:29Speaker 3: The umpires want to make sure the calls are right too,
- 10:32Speaker 3: so I think we'll see less challenges as the season
- 10:35Speaker 3: goes on because his umpires are going to use to
- 10:37Speaker 3: the new strike zone.
- 10:40Speaker 4: I'm curious on Dan Wilson, as you can imagine, he's
- 10:43Speaker 4: been getting a lot of discourse, as I'll say, around
- 10:48Speaker 4: the team. What's the league wide perception of Dan Wilson
- 10:51Speaker 4: so far these in the first two months of the season.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, not much discussion on him. I mean
- 10:58Speaker 3: obviously a h you know, you know, a rookie, rookie
- 11:02Speaker 3: type manager and uh, you know, did did well last year,
- 11:05Speaker 3: so people, uh do'll give them a lot of credit
- 11:08Speaker 3: for that. But you know, like these piggyback things and
- 11:11Speaker 3: things like that, you know, that's all done by the
- 11:13Speaker 3: uh you know, front office and collaboration with everybody else.
- 11:16Speaker 3: So it's not like, you know, he's the one, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 3: just just setting this on his own, you know, even
- 11:22Speaker 3: lineups it's like, you know, done with a lot of input.
- 11:25Speaker 3: And that's that's not just Seattle, that's that's everywhere.
- 11:28Speaker 4: And how much responsibility should Dan Wilson get realistically for
- 11:33Speaker 4: the Mariners offensive inconsistencies versus the actual player talent.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Well then you probably you know more more responsibility or
- 11:44Speaker 3: blame on the hitting coaches that are working with those guys. Uh,
- 11:48Speaker 3: you know, you see all the time. I mean, here's
- 11:49Speaker 3: a you know, Cubs going through ten game losing streak.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You know they're hitting like one twenty with runs a
- 11:54Speaker 3: screen position. It's not the hitting coaches at the play,
- 11:56Speaker 3: that's the players. So I mean sometimes just a new
- 11:59Speaker 3: boy East helps, but you know it's usually not, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 3: it's not the managers. It's more one of the coaches
- 12:06Speaker 3: on that staff. Don't shake, you know, shake things up.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You mentioned Trek Scruble, the potential of him being on
- 12:12Speaker 1: the trade market if he does come back from his
- 12:14Speaker 1: surgery and pitch as well for the Tigers that are
- 12:17Speaker 1: seemingly out of it at the bottom of the American etcentral, Bob,
- 12:20Speaker 1: who else would be the prime catches in a July
- 12:23Speaker 1: trade market? Who do you expect to be become available?
- 12:26Speaker 1: And you know Jerry Depoto and the Mariners they are involved.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Say what you will, but they get Randy or Rose Arena,
- 12:32Speaker 1: Luis Castillo, they make deals in July. Who do you
- 12:36Speaker 1: think they could have their eyes on and who might
- 12:38Speaker 1: become available here in a month or two.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Well, the best you know, best pictures would be you know, uh,
- 12:44Speaker 3: you know Robbie Ray along with Scooble. I don't think
- 12:47Speaker 3: Logan Webb would be available, but I don't rule it out.
- 12:50Speaker 3: If the Diamondback struggle, you will be Merrill, Kelly Za
- 12:55Speaker 3: Gallon maybe even in what or what rigus Uh you
- 12:59Speaker 3: know some player wise, I just don't think anybody's gonna
- 13:02Speaker 3: take on that contract of a damas Or or or
- 13:05Speaker 3: a devers Or or a Matt Chapman. I just don't
- 13:09Speaker 3: see it. Uh. You know, the Kansas City will have
- 13:13Speaker 3: you know, their stars available, like Seth Lugo that sort
- 13:16Speaker 3: of thing. But you know there's not that one guy
- 13:19Speaker 3: like a schoobl out there, you know, position player wise,
- 13:22Speaker 3: you know, you know, like a Juan Soto you know
- 13:24Speaker 3: back a few years ago that's suddenly going to change
- 13:27Speaker 3: it change a team, state, or you know, be be
- 13:30Speaker 3: that big of a impact difference.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Bob Nightingale USA today, He's been doing it for a
- 13:36Speaker 1: long time and doing it well. He appreciate you joining us,
- 13:38Speaker 1: sir and Wednesday in the Major League Baseball season.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Take care all right, my pleasure, Thank you guys. Bob
- 13:44Speaker 2: Nightingale USA. Today I covered ball with him back in
- 13:47Speaker 2: the early two thousands.
- 13:49Speaker 1: He's been Arizona. He was a Potters beat writer for
- 13:52Speaker 1: the La Times for a while I was in Kansas City.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Now he's been a long time senior calumnist for US Today.
- 13:57Speaker 1: And he brings up to Terry Scoogle. I mean that
- 14:00Speaker 1: would tilt the balance of power to whoever might acquire
- 14:04Speaker 1: him if he does come back. He came back from
- 14:07Speaker 1: a surgery that was unique in his elbow, in his arm,
- 14:11Speaker 1: pitching arm, and there's talk of him coming back soon
- 14:15Speaker 1: and like within a month or so, perhaps being back
- 14:17Speaker 1: on the mount, which at the time it was almost
- 14:19Speaker 1: as if he was a season enning injury early in
- 14:21Speaker 1: the spring. But Bob's point is at twenty one and
- 14:25Speaker 1: thirty four, ten games out in the last place in
- 14:28Speaker 1: America in Central he thinks the Tigers are done. He
- 14:31Speaker 1: said to Cleveland won the division, that race is over.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Even though Chicago twenty seven and twenty seven are within
- 14:37Speaker 1: shouting distance of Cleveland right now, but he says the
- 14:40Speaker 1: Tigers are done. And that deal, Remember he got the
- 14:43Speaker 1: scoobl got the largest arbitration award ever thirty two million
- 14:48Speaker 1: dollars for one year and Bob Nightingale. That's just making
- 14:50Speaker 1: bringing up the point. The Tigers haven't shown no interest
- 14:53Speaker 1: in renegotiating or extending or given him any offer in
- 14:57Speaker 1: the last two years, and this is while he was
- 14:59Speaker 1: ascending to a young top of the sport pitcher. So
- 15:02Speaker 1: the supposition would be the Tigers who won him back
- 15:06Speaker 1: to potentially trade him after a couple starts. He mentioned Toronto,
- 15:10Speaker 1: he mentioned San Diego with new ownership spending money. He
- 15:13Speaker 1: mentioned the Dodgers because they're the Dodgers. He mentioned the
- 15:15Speaker 1: Yankees because they're the Yankees, Chris. That would change everything.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Toronto's been lurking there after their World Series appearance last
- 15:22Speaker 1: year and they're currently in third place near five hundred
- 15:24Speaker 1: in the America Yeast, But that would change everything to
- 15:27Speaker 1: the Blue Jays.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Is that a form of cheating or am I jumping
- 15:30Speaker 4: the gun a little bit too much? They That would
- 15:32Speaker 4: be some serious firepower. But again, I do believe that
- 15:36Speaker 4: the Mariners are better than the Blue Jays. If they
- 15:40Speaker 4: get Scoogle, okay, makes things interesting, but I would still
- 15:43Speaker 4: have the Mariners being better. Granted they haven't played to
- 15:46Speaker 4: that level yet, but I'm anticipating that to change. Over
- 15:50Speaker 4: the next month or so when guys are healthier. It's
- 15:53Speaker 4: more I just think they're just in a rut right now,
- 15:56Speaker 4: and I don't know how many more excuses I can
- 15:58Speaker 4: make for this roster to play to their level of
- 16:02Speaker 4: where they were last season. It's not like they're having
- 16:05Speaker 4: a hangover. They're just not playing good baseball offensively, and
- 16:08Speaker 4: they're still having errors on the defensive side of things.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Pitching is yet again saving them. So whatever teams do
- 16:14Speaker 4: around the league doesn't really concern me. Obviously, the Yankees
- 16:17Speaker 4: are of concern. If the Blue Days do get screwgled,
- 16:21Speaker 4: that would be like, Okay, that's a challenge. But I
- 16:23Speaker 4: would still take the Mariners in a seven game series.
- 16:26Speaker 4: And maybe I'm crazy for thinking that right now in
- 16:28Speaker 4: May going into June, but I just like this roster
- 16:31Speaker 4: where it is, And I know Bob Nightingale mentioned maybe
- 16:34Speaker 4: for the trade deadline they go get another reliever.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Or something of that.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Potentially that would help, it wouldn't hurt. You can never
- 16:40Speaker 4: have enough relievers on this roster. So maybe we'll have
- 16:44Speaker 4: Bob back on closer to the trade deadline to see
- 16:47Speaker 4: if he has a name that could come in and
- 16:49Speaker 4: really solidify this pitching staff, and obviously offensively, we would
- 16:53Speaker 4: assume they'd be playing their best ball of the season.
- 16:57Speaker 1: What's interesting about Toronto and everyone's burying their They've had
- 17:00Speaker 1: problems with their closer, they had injuries. They are twenty
- 17:03Speaker 1: six and twenty nine. That's almost the same.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Exact record as the Mariners.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Manners are twenty seven and twenty nine going into their
- 17:09Speaker 1: game today against the A's. The Blue Jays are playing
- 17:12Speaker 1: right now against Miami. They're twenty six and twenty nine,
- 17:14Speaker 1: but they're in the wrong division. They're nine and a
- 17:16Speaker 1: half back in the America League East. Because Tampa Bay
- 17:19Speaker 1: is sixteen games above five hundred. The Yankees are eleven
- 17:22Speaker 1: games above five hundred. They're still two and a half back.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Of course, the Mariners are at the right division. They're
- 17:27Speaker 1: two games under five hundred, yet a half game out
- 17:30Speaker 1: because the A's are at first place at twenty seven
- 17:32Speaker 1: and twenty eight. Logan Gilbert starting in about forty five
- 17:36Speaker 1: minutes time down in West Sacramento against the A's and
- 17:38Speaker 1: the finale of that road trip in series, and the
- 17:41Speaker 1: Marriages are going trying to go for the sweep against
- 17:43Speaker 1: the A's that would put them, improbably in first place,
- 17:46Speaker 1: But Chris, how often have we talked it's just a
- 17:48Speaker 1: four or five or six game winning streak away from
- 17:50Speaker 1: the Maritor's being in first place, And this.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Was the perfect opportunity to get rolling, sweep the Athletics,
- 17:56Speaker 4: and go from there. They can they easily, not easily?
- 17:59Speaker 4: Can they get a ten game winning streak. I think
- 18:03Speaker 4: this team is capable. Maybe it's asking a lot right
- 18:05Speaker 4: now considering how they've been playing, but at some point
- 18:09Speaker 4: they got to hit, They got to get rolling and
- 18:11Speaker 4: start to see some consistencies from this entire roster, from
- 18:16Speaker 4: the pitching all the way through the defensive side of things.
- 18:19Speaker 4: So I'm intrigued to see a what they do today
- 18:24Speaker 4: against the Athletics and moving forward right because if they
- 18:28Speaker 4: have a setback today, within my goodness, it's the same
- 18:30Speaker 4: story with this team.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Two steps forward, one step back, yeah, or one step forward,
- 18:34Speaker 1: two steps there. Arizona comes in this weekend. To Chris's point,
- 18:37Speaker 1: what's next after this? They go three games of Arizona,
- 18:40Speaker 1: three games against the Mets, who've been absolutely atrocious with
- 18:43Speaker 1: the roster and the salary or the roster size or
- 18:46Speaker 1: excuse me, size of contracts. They have three against the
- 18:49Speaker 1: Mets next week. Then they go at Detroit, who we
- 18:51Speaker 1: just talked about was buried in the bottom of the
- 18:53Speaker 1: Al Central at Baltimore at Washington. That's the seat the
- 18:57Speaker 1: Mariners next week and a half two weeks. Can they
- 19:01Speaker 1: make their run? It wouldn't take much of a run
- 19:03Speaker 1: to sword at the top of the American League West
- 19:05Speaker 1: the way it's going right now. Up next to come
- 19:07Speaker 1: a dodge Tex line four nine, four to five one.
- 19:09Speaker 1: A lot of opinions on what you would do with
- 19:11Speaker 1: this piggybacking situation of Castillo and Miller. We'll talk on
- 19:14Speaker 1: text line next. You're a part of the show on
- 19:16Speaker 1: ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back to the show,
- 19:21Speaker 1: The Great Best Show with Chris their Kid. We're on
- 19:22Speaker 1: every day every weekday from ten am until noon. We
- 19:26Speaker 1: talked about the Seahawks OTAs they continue the next couple
- 19:29Speaker 1: days at team headquarters in Renton, and they have three
- 19:32Speaker 1: days voluntary OTA practices next week, then the only mandatory
- 19:37Speaker 1: work of the entire offseason three days veteran mini camp
- 19:41Speaker 1: June eight, nine, and ten, and then they're off till
- 19:43Speaker 1: the end of July and start a training camp. We've
- 19:46Speaker 1: talked about the Mariners and they're piggybacking.
- 19:49Speaker 2: We talked to Bob.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Nightingale USA today about that. He says, yeah, this is
- 19:54Speaker 1: more like spring training. That's something you try to do,
- 19:56Speaker 1: but not something you do with two veterans starting pitchers
- 19:59Speaker 1: what the Mariners are doing with Louis Castillo and Bryce Miller.
- 20:03Speaker 1: The Mariners are in Sacramento. They play this afternoon against
- 20:06Speaker 1: the A's with a chance at first place. A win
- 20:07Speaker 1: would put the Mariners in first place, despite the fact
- 20:10Speaker 1: they would still not beat to five hundred. That's what
- 20:12Speaker 1: the American League West is Logan Gilbert is starting for
- 20:15Speaker 1: the MS. We're talking about the NBA playoffs and the
- 20:17Speaker 1: fact that the Knicks are awaiting the winner of the
- 20:20Speaker 1: Thunder now at three to two on the Spurs, and
- 20:22Speaker 1: the Western Conference Finals.
- 20:23Speaker 2: In the NHL, the Stanley Cup Finals have one entrant.
- 20:28Speaker 1: The Vegas gold Knights swept the Colorado Avalanche, the best
- 20:30Speaker 1: team in the NHL regular season, right out of the
- 20:32Speaker 1: Western Conference Finals Game four tonight in the East, Montreal
- 20:36Speaker 1: is hosting Carolina, trailing that series to the Hurricanes two
- 20:40Speaker 1: games to one. You know what time it is in
- 20:41Speaker 1: the music means it is time to be a part
- 20:43Speaker 1: of the show. That the Koma Dodge text Lin and
- 20:44Speaker 1: a lot of opinions Chris on this piggybacking by the Mariners.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Let's get things going for the three to six to soho,
- 20:52Speaker 4: why can't the Mariners do a six men rotation until July?
- 20:55Speaker 4: Then see what offers they get in exchange.
- 20:59Speaker 2: For a bat. That may be the best solution.
- 21:04Speaker 1: It may not be best for the all parties, including
- 21:08Speaker 1: the five other starters, but it would be the best
- 21:10Speaker 1: for Castillo for sure.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I don't think you want to trade any of the
- 21:14Speaker 2: other ones.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Because of the fact that their youth and they're under
- 21:17Speaker 1: club control and contract for multiple years. But at twenty
- 21:21Speaker 1: four million, that's that's tough to move, least Castillo unless
- 21:24Speaker 1: you're just having him start. So that maybe that's the
- 21:27Speaker 1: way Chris, and have five days rest between starts. That's
- 21:30Speaker 1: gonna change everybody's routine, though that's so far. That's why
- 21:33Speaker 1: they haven't done.
- 21:34Speaker 4: It all, right from the four to two five Yankees
- 21:37Speaker 4: already have two top left handed starters. They aren't going
- 21:41Speaker 4: after Scrowgle Toronto makes sense because Rogers just wants Cable viewers.
- 21:45Speaker 4: I just don't know what they have to trade. Okay, Tigers,
- 21:51Speaker 4: that probably is a miss. Yeah, Toronto makes I think
- 21:54Speaker 4: it is Tigers. Yeah, no, no, Toronto doesn't have enough
- 21:57Speaker 4: to trade.
- 21:57Speaker 1: What is at the point of the textras yes, okay, yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 1: Scooble's going to command the top, as Bob Nightingale said,
- 22:04Speaker 1: school is going to command the top top of your
- 22:07Speaker 1: farm system, to top fifteen in your system.
- 22:09Speaker 2: As as he said, this.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Is from the two oh six. The Mariners will get
- 22:16Speaker 4: the Blue Jays in divisional round, and I'm taking the
- 22:18Speaker 4: Mariners to win that in seven six games. Look at
- 22:22Speaker 4: that early hot take and even predicting the number of games.
- 22:27Speaker 4: I could be crazy, but you know, sue me. Hey,
- 22:31Speaker 4: guys from the three six. So this is Jeff just
- 22:33Speaker 4: letting you know that sports radio out here in Detroit
- 22:35Speaker 4: is also stating that the Tigers are done and we'll
- 22:38Speaker 4: be trading screwball as soon as possible to get the
- 22:41Speaker 4: biggest return.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Thanks Jeff.
- 22:45Speaker 1: And actually, you know, if as soon as possible would
- 22:48Speaker 1: be after as Bob's point is, you got to come
- 22:50Speaker 1: back from the injury one, which is no shirt thing.
- 22:52Speaker 2: He's going to be pitching brilliantly as soon as he
- 22:54Speaker 2: starts back again. Two.
- 22:56Speaker 1: You gotta let him start for a couple starts to
- 22:57Speaker 1: build his market up for him. But yeah, between all that,
- 23:03Speaker 1: as soon as possible, might not be till July or
- 23:06Speaker 1: end of July.
- 23:06Speaker 2: And then you wait. If he is pitching, well you
- 23:09Speaker 2: wait and then you wait for that best offer.
- 23:11Speaker 4: So it could be a while for sure before Schooble
- 23:14Speaker 4: would move from our guy Keith out of the two
- 23:17Speaker 4: five three at the Mariners went for school, well, we
- 23:21Speaker 4: possibly see the ultra rare double piggyback, probably seven starters.
- 23:28Speaker 2: They'd have to trade one of their starters to get Schooble. Yeah,
- 23:31Speaker 2: the ultra rare double piggyback. That's funny, Keith. One piggyback's
- 23:37Speaker 2: not enough for Keith.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Now from the four two five, if you want to
- 23:42Speaker 4: improve the team, you have to accept this team will
- 23:44Speaker 4: lose two out of three of their young pitchers. At
- 23:47Speaker 4: least the young pitchers only have trade value, and Luis
- 23:50Speaker 4: Castile is an affordable four to five starter for the
- 23:53Speaker 4: lat for at least three seasons and has no trade value.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Plus they need to move the surplus right field and
- 24:00Speaker 4: second baseman guys. If you accept Emerson Young, or if
- 24:05Speaker 4: you accept Emerson Young or your second shortstop in second
- 24:09Speaker 4: base for the next five years, then Donovan or JP
- 24:12Speaker 4: must be traded and whoever remains becomes a utility player.
- 24:16Speaker 4: We need a real closer pushing everyone else down, a
- 24:19Speaker 4: power hitting third baseman. All the parts need to be moved.
- 24:23Speaker 4: That's an interesting take.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I don't know that they need to move away from Donovan.
- 24:27Speaker 1: He's hurt, but he's been really good when he has
- 24:30Speaker 1: played Emerson, Emerson and Young looked like the future at
- 24:35Speaker 1: shortstop and second base. To his point or her point, yes,
- 24:39Speaker 1: I would push back on Luis as an affordable starter
- 24:41Speaker 1: at twenty four million a year if he's the fourth
- 24:45Speaker 1: or fifth best guy or now sixth best guy. So
- 24:50Speaker 1: far this year he's been the sixth best starter. He's
- 24:52Speaker 1: making twenty four million dollars. That's not a value. That's
- 24:54Speaker 1: not affordable either, And his lack of affordability is why
- 24:58Speaker 1: it is really hard to trade it. And some people
- 25:01Speaker 1: think you can't trade him, and you certainly can't trade
- 25:03Speaker 1: him if he's in the bullpen, which is the whole
- 25:05Speaker 1: point of this conversation.
- 25:06Speaker 2: We've had.
- 25:08Speaker 5: A little bit of NFL.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Regarding the Seahawks from Nico to three to six oh,
- 25:12Speaker 4: do you think some of the missing players could be
- 25:13Speaker 4: fabricated drama for the team because they're not gonna have
- 25:16Speaker 4: any real drama to give Hard Knocks, or that they'll
- 25:19Speaker 4: do something similar to make their Hard Knocks season interesting.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Thanks Nico.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I don't think they're thinking three things about not even
- 25:27Speaker 1: one thing about Hard Knocks.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I don't. It's a non factor in the building. I
- 25:32Speaker 2: can tell you that for now.
- 25:34Speaker 1: When it starts, it'll be a factor that they have
- 25:36Speaker 1: cameras in their meetings and in the locker room and
- 25:39Speaker 1: off the field, and McDonald won't like any of it.
- 25:41Speaker 1: He's gonna try to keep everything close to the vest
- 25:43Speaker 1: and in house and protect the culture that he has.
- 25:48Speaker 1: John Schneider's already said, we're gonna be try to be cordial.
- 25:51Speaker 1: We're gonna try to be accommodating without giving away anything,
- 25:54Speaker 1: revealing anything, So they're gonna be coy. I don't think
- 25:58Speaker 1: the players are gonna do any shenanigans or anything to Yeah,
- 26:02Speaker 1: hard Knocks is not Yeah, it's not a disruption. I
- 26:06Speaker 1: can tell you that, especially not now.
- 26:10Speaker 4: From the three six oh Joe from Kitsap might just
- 26:14Speaker 4: be the few here, but seems like Jerry calls a
- 26:18Speaker 4: lot of the shots and loves Dan being a new
- 26:20Speaker 4: manager and can implement his plans. This piggybacking is just
- 26:24Speaker 4: another one to go along with platooning horrible right handed
- 26:27Speaker 4: hitters and stipulations on how the bullpen gets used. Seems
- 26:33Speaker 4: to me a lot of the hate Dan gets are
- 26:36Speaker 4: from what Jerry calls.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I agree with some of that. I certainly think this picking.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I've already said the piggybacking was there's no way that
- 26:46Speaker 1: Dan Wilson, a first time manager, said let's go do
- 26:48Speaker 1: this and told the Poto no way, no, no, no way.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And I don't think Dan Wilson is all that the
- 26:57Speaker 1: genesis of the handedness and the analytics driven misdecisions that
- 27:02Speaker 1: he makes Hunter Joe for Luke Rayley.
- 27:06Speaker 3: I mean.
- 27:07Speaker 2: No, I think that's top down driven. I think the
- 27:10Speaker 2: texture has a point there.
- 27:13Speaker 4: All right, a little NBA This is from the two
- 27:17Speaker 4: PHO six Chris. If you think this type of play
- 27:20Speaker 4: is good for the NBA, you're a casual product.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Is awful casual? That's like a modern day insult right now.
- 27:27Speaker 5: That's not an insult.
- 27:28Speaker 4: I think maybe what SGA is doing getting favorable whistles
- 27:34Speaker 4: that could be considered not good. But overall, the entire
- 27:41Speaker 4: conference is on fire. Like you have two elite teams
- 27:45Speaker 4: playing their best basketball of the season with an opportunity
- 27:47Speaker 4: to go to the NBA Finals.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Okay, but tell me this the product itself.
- 27:51Speaker 1: When I if I say I meant to gym on
- 27:53Speaker 1: the treadmill, and I'm that the volume turned down and
- 27:55Speaker 1: i can see the game at a distance and I'm
- 27:57Speaker 1: just watching the game from a thirty thousand of view.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I see five players run to the three point line
- 28:03Speaker 1: on a fast break. I see dudes pulling up and
- 28:06Speaker 1: hoisting up threes on one on.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Two fast breaks. I see isolation.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Plays everyone getting out of the lane and one on
- 28:12Speaker 1: one dribbling. I don't see plays. I don't see five
- 28:16Speaker 1: man rotating and moving away from the ball. And I
- 28:20Speaker 1: don't even see picking rolls that much anymore.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Would would you at.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Least agree that the game has so is so different
- 28:28Speaker 4: in the last five years because the game is not
- 28:30Speaker 4: predicated around an offensive oriented thing. It's like you have
- 28:36Speaker 4: such elite players and shot makers they can get their
- 28:39Speaker 4: own play, which is what the Spurs have now. Granted,
- 28:43Speaker 4: there are sets. You'll watch coaches out of a time out.
- 28:47Speaker 4: You'll see a set run out of a maybe their
- 28:51Speaker 4: first play of the game is a set. But for
- 28:52Speaker 4: the most part, when you have someone that can create
- 28:56Speaker 4: their own shot without picking rolls and all these other things,
- 28:59Speaker 4: and you can just rotate and move a couple of
- 29:02Speaker 4: spots and you have an open three, you're gonna take
- 29:04Speaker 4: that versus okay, let's create this play.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Now.
- 29:08Speaker 4: There are times I think teams really lock in and
- 29:10Speaker 4: do that. Okay, see and the Spurs are great examples.
- 29:12Speaker 4: There are times where one of the coach will draws
- 29:15Speaker 4: something out of a time I'm like, wow, it was
- 29:16Speaker 4: a really great play for you name a player. But
- 29:19Speaker 4: for the most part, if I have an MVP caliber
- 29:22Speaker 4: guy and it's not an issue he can do this
- 29:27Speaker 4: for thirty so minutes, I'm going to give him the ball.
- 29:31Speaker 5: And allow him to maneuver and create shots.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Because there are games where Sga he is a pass
- 29:36Speaker 4: first person and creates for chet Homer, who I think
- 29:38Speaker 4: played really good last night, but they're not drawing sets
- 29:41Speaker 4: for him. He's getting rebounds, getting extra possessions. So I
- 29:44Speaker 4: think it's the point that you made it about the
- 29:46Speaker 4: game advancing. It's not as simple as well, this is
- 29:51Speaker 4: a really good defense. You've gotta draw something up and
- 29:53Speaker 4: create this matchup opportunity for our best player. Whereas oh,
- 29:57Speaker 4: I could just let Sga bring the ball up court
- 30:00Speaker 4: and he's going to decipher and pick and choose how
- 30:02Speaker 4: he wants to attack the spurs.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Oh, Victor's gonna play in the paint. That's cool.
- 30:05Speaker 4: I'm gonna attack the paint and kick it out to
- 30:07Speaker 4: a three point shooter or you name it. So the
- 30:10Speaker 4: game is just changed dramatically. The defenders can't put their
- 30:14Speaker 4: hands on people no more so. Now what does that mean, Well,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I can go to the paint more so. It's kind
- 30:18Speaker 4: of a give and take. And now you're seeing it's
- 30:22Speaker 4: dunks are three pointers though, I mean, it's like going
- 30:24Speaker 4: to Green Lake watching an NBA game. Well, if you
- 30:26Speaker 4: go to Green Lake, a lot of these guys can't
- 30:28Speaker 4: even do what these players are doing.
- 30:30Speaker 1: But I mean, I'm just talking about the style is
- 30:32Speaker 1: push up threes and dunks? Is that change like watching
- 30:35Speaker 1: a Green Lake pickup game? It's changed tremendously. It's to
- 30:39Speaker 1: me if the product's terrible. But I'm you and I
- 30:42Speaker 1: have differed on the NBA for years. I'm not going
- 30:44Speaker 1: to go on and about that, but I just mean
- 30:47Speaker 1: the actual approach to the game. That's That's kind of
- 30:50Speaker 1: what I was getting here. I think it starts with
- 30:51Speaker 1: just the players you have on the court. It's it's
- 30:54Speaker 1: so much easier just to not draw anything. Just go
- 30:56Speaker 1: play ball. Kind of like I think we talked about
- 30:59Speaker 1: this no.
- 31:00Speaker 4: I talked about with Ashley about not getting in your
- 31:02Speaker 4: own way and trying to do things.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Just go play ball. I think that's what the NBA
- 31:06Speaker 5: coaches are now doing.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Just go play ball.
- 31:08Speaker 4: Yeah it might look different in terms of threes and dunks,
- 31:12Speaker 4: but you know what that's doing. It's entertainment at the
- 31:14Speaker 4: end of the day. And I know a lot of
- 31:15Speaker 4: fans that are okay with that, are entertained to that magnitude. Now,
- 31:19Speaker 4: if you're a person that loves defense and loves plays,
- 31:22Speaker 4: this league is not going to be offering that so much.
- 31:26Speaker 4: There's only a handful of teams that runs sets a
- 31:29Speaker 4: lot of times. There are still teams that do it,
- 31:32Speaker 4: but the sets are few in between. Every now and
- 31:36Speaker 4: then you'll see a set for Victor, but for the
- 31:37Speaker 4: most part, it's creating matchup nightmares when you have a
- 31:40Speaker 4: guy seven to five that can do any and everything
- 31:43Speaker 4: a point guard can do. This is from last one
- 31:46Speaker 4: for me. This is from the two h six. Oh
- 31:51Speaker 4: actually yeah. Cheenie Seattle Studs begin their twenty twenty sixth
- 31:55Speaker 4: season with a four game series versus the Medford Rogues
- 31:58Speaker 4: and Medford oregonf are three time NBC World Series champions
- 32:02Speaker 4: in twenty thirteen, fifteen to nineteen.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 32:05Speaker 4: I want to say the name is Elisa. I hope
- 32:06Speaker 4: I'm saying that right. Shout out to the Chenie Seattle Studs.
- 32:10Speaker 2: They're named after Chenie, a company owned by Ben Cheney.
- 32:14Speaker 5: Yeah, we talked about it. I think two years ago
- 32:15Speaker 5: we did the show.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Yep, we did.
- 32:17Speaker 1: There are a Summit Pro summer college team. I think
- 32:21Speaker 1: they play their games at UPS, the University of the
- 32:24Speaker 1: Google On. Yeah, they play their games at UPS University
- 32:28Speaker 1: of Puget Sound and thank you. There's others around Seattle's
- 32:32Speaker 1: a team in West Seattle plays at West Seattle from
- 32:35Speaker 1: a player I coached at University Prep who is now
- 32:37Speaker 1: at Linnfield College. Zach Hampson is going to play for
- 32:39Speaker 1: that team in West Seattle this summer, and there are
- 32:43Speaker 1: leagues around the northwest, teams around the northwestitude exactly that.
- 32:46Speaker 2: So thank you Realisa uh Fortune five says.
- 32:50Speaker 1: The Wilson conversation with Castille and the dugout the other
- 32:52Speaker 1: night and Sacramento just shows the level of dysfunction in
- 32:55Speaker 1: the Mariner organization.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Two five three. Way to Greg's eyes, go at OTAs,
- 33:01Speaker 2: what should I look for? That's a good question.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I look for how the because the OTAs are the
- 33:06Speaker 1: first chance of the rookies being on the field running
- 33:08Speaker 1: plays with the veterans. And I look at Jennari and
- 33:12Speaker 1: Price and how he's working in with the offense, and
- 33:14Speaker 1: I work at the wide receivers and how often Sam Darnold's.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Throwing to the rookie ride receivers as Last year, for.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Instance, I watched a lot on how much Elijah Royal,
- 33:25Speaker 1: the rookie tight end, was getting targeted with the number
- 33:27Speaker 1: one offense. It's an indicator of where they feel the
- 33:31Speaker 1: new guys are fitting into their plans and so on.
- 33:34Speaker 1: So you go across the board and you look at
- 33:36Speaker 1: Clark on defense and Neil on defense, and how much
- 33:40Speaker 1: are they integrating with the system that Mike McDonald has
- 33:43Speaker 1: for their veterans, or are they sitting off to the
- 33:45Speaker 1: side and barely getting in with the twos and threes
- 33:47Speaker 1: and that kind of thing. And that's what OTAs are
- 33:51Speaker 1: for integrating the rookies into the system and seeing how
- 33:54Speaker 1: ready they are so that by training camp the coaching
- 33:57Speaker 1: staff has an idea, Okay, this is how we can
- 33:59Speaker 1: array this. But he seems to be catching onto the
- 34:01Speaker 1: playbook here.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And so on. That's that's what I look for when
- 34:04Speaker 2: I go to TYS. That's a good question. Yeah, I
- 34:07Speaker 2: hear you.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Four two five. Donovan is not a third baseman, and
- 34:09Speaker 1: it's been failing at largely. He's not a true third
- 34:11Speaker 1: base and we know that he's a second baseman and
- 34:13Speaker 1: Cole Young has been lights out. You're not moving Cole
- 34:16Speaker 1: Young out of second base, so you need to put
- 34:18Speaker 1: Donovan as an utility roll in the outfield. But hey,
- 34:20Speaker 1: road blaz just came back. Looked good last night on
- 34:23Speaker 1: base three times Roadblason right field.
- 34:26Speaker 2: I mean, what are you gonna do?
- 34:27Speaker 1: You're gonna put Donovan out there with Roadblay's healthy again,
- 34:30Speaker 1: So it appears third base is where Donovan will stay
- 34:33Speaker 1: when he comes back because you're not moving Cole Young
- 34:35Speaker 1: and now you got cold Emerson up. Excuse me? Emersonem
- 34:38Speaker 1: to play shortstop with what do you do with JP?
- 34:40Speaker 1: Crawford blah blah blah. And that goes back to Crawford
- 34:43Speaker 1: volunteering to work out a third base because he knows
- 34:46Speaker 1: his livelihood is placed in Seattle's lineup?
- 34:50Speaker 2: Is that's that's Big.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Four?
- 34:54Speaker 1: Five says Julio is the next Dave Parker down to
- 34:56Speaker 1: the eyes Dave Parker nineteen seventy reference. We are family
- 35:01Speaker 1: from my childhood. Okay, the mayor Maple Valley. I think
- 35:07Speaker 1: he might be taping an interview. I'm not sure, but
- 35:10Speaker 1: he is outside. He probably will be joining us next.
- 35:12Speaker 1: His show is from twelve until three, Dave Softy Maar
- 35:15Speaker 1: and Dick Fang three until seven.
- 35:16Speaker 2: All that's coming up at ninety three point three kJ RFM.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Greg Best Show with Christopher kid
- 35:35Speaker 1: Live on ninety three point three kJ RFM. We are
- 35:37Speaker 1: pleased to be joined by Ian Fornest straight out of
- 35:40Speaker 1: taping nineteen interviews.
- 35:41Speaker 6: You guys been popping out there. We don't run around.
- 35:43Speaker 6: We got a lot of stuff going on today?
- 35:44Speaker 2: How are you?
- 35:44Speaker 6: What's going on? I'm sey, Yeah, I see you sick?
- 35:47Speaker 6: What the hell it's it's may. Nobody gets sick.
- 35:49Speaker 2: And yeah, I know on planes without sleep to the
- 35:51Speaker 2: East coast. Ye got me sick.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:53Speaker 6: Say he went to Shelanne in a one day excourageon
- 35:55Speaker 6: my wife. It's aggressive and my wife's idea. It was aggressive.
- 35:59Speaker 6: Six hour on trip of driving. Yeah, ended up there.
- 36:02Speaker 6: You missed a spirited ota yesterday.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yeah, twenty five years of covered OTAs, I kind of
- 36:06Speaker 1: could skip one.
- 36:07Speaker 6: I think you were fine. I think you were fine.
- 36:09Speaker 6: Of course McDonald had him in the rain, yeah, which
- 36:12Speaker 6: I thought was And we had tyle kadon afterwards yesterday,
- 36:16Speaker 6: and I asked him about that because in the past
- 36:18Speaker 6: Pete would bring him inside. Of course they were inside,
- 36:20Speaker 6: and I'm driving in yesterday to get to the facility,
- 36:23Speaker 6: and it's like that misty, Hey, it feels like October
- 36:28Speaker 6: forty nine fifty one degrees, like first of all, feels
- 36:31Speaker 6: like football. Well that's cool, but I'm like, one hundred
- 36:33Speaker 6: percent they're gonna be inside.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Yeah, nope.
- 36:36Speaker 6: And I thought about that, and I was like, this
- 36:38Speaker 6: is we deal with this during the season. Why aren't
- 36:40Speaker 6: we gonna do it? I always thought they did it
- 36:42Speaker 6: just because they want somebody slipping falling, you know, but
- 36:47Speaker 6: you could do that anywhere, right, So, and that grass
- 36:49Speaker 6: is pristine. Those guys do such an job that it's
- 36:52Speaker 6: not like that's a problem. And by the time practice
- 36:55Speaker 6: was over it was kind of partly sunny.
- 36:57Speaker 2: So whatever.
- 36:57Speaker 1: It's all part of McDonald's through not around. That's what
- 37:00Speaker 1: his mentality is. Yeah, he just doesn't care. No, he's
- 37:05Speaker 1: he's got a multimillion dollar indoor facility and doesn't use it.
- 37:08Speaker 6: No, they use it for interviews, hanging super Bowl, hanging
- 37:13Speaker 6: super Bowl banners. I heard Softy and Faine were talking
- 37:16Speaker 6: about this yesterday, and you would know just from how
- 37:20Speaker 6: many hits you get on the paper and the website
- 37:22Speaker 6: and all those things. They were talking about how this
- 37:26Speaker 6: super Bowl championship and this team is just doesn't draw
- 37:30Speaker 6: the same fire, excitement, interest as the first go around.
- 37:34Speaker 6: And I was trying to think about that driving around.
- 37:37Speaker 6: What do you think locally, nationally, locally locally? I felt
- 37:42Speaker 6: it last year and I looked at it from a
- 37:44Speaker 6: different standpoint, you know, the first time, first two super
- 37:46Speaker 6: Bowl trips with Pete. I was there, and so I
- 37:49Speaker 6: didn't really watching it and being around and people want
- 37:52Speaker 6: neighbors and everything. I felt a massive amount of excitement.
- 37:56Speaker 1: And I think being around here more than a day,
- 37:58Speaker 1: anyone who's been around here more than a day. Everyone
- 38:00Speaker 1: has been around here since the first Super Bowl Championship.
- 38:04Speaker 1: There'll never be another first ever, right, and even this
- 38:08Speaker 1: parade day, I didn't feel the fervor that I felt
- 38:10Speaker 1: that I agree that day.
- 38:12Speaker 2: I agree twenty fourteen. But maybe maybe their point is
- 38:17Speaker 2: that the personalities are not as relatable.
- 38:20Speaker 1: They don't have a legion of Boom, they don't have
- 38:21Speaker 1: Richard Sherman, they don't have Cam Chancellor Earl Thomas. I
- 38:25Speaker 1: think this team might be more likable from a fan's perspective.
- 38:29Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 38:29Speaker 6: It's funny you say that. I'm going to bring that
- 38:32Speaker 6: up today because I had a conversation with someone yesterday
- 38:35Speaker 6: and I don't even mention who it was, media or otherwise,
- 38:39Speaker 6: and just about the likability factor. How easy these guys
- 38:43Speaker 6: are to deal with. But there is no impending implosion
- 38:48Speaker 6: coming right Like.
- 38:49Speaker 2: That doesn't seem to be. No nobody's like, where's.
- 38:52Speaker 6: Mine, Where's mine?
- 38:53Speaker 2: That's exactly.
- 38:54Speaker 6: Even Witherspoon, who's you know, like Keys needs to get
- 38:57Speaker 6: a deal done.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Anyway, there's no story.
- 39:00Speaker 6: But he's there yesterday of course, right like that. I'm
- 39:03Speaker 6: gonna tell you right now, that guy's name is Richard Sherman,
- 39:06Speaker 6: Earl Thomas cam Chancellor, the exact same situation. In no
- 39:10Speaker 6: way he's on the field.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Cham Chanceller didn't show up till week three.
- 39:12Speaker 6: He wanted it after they row and two right, and
- 39:15Speaker 6: so Earl stood around with his arms folded and stood
- 39:17Speaker 6: behind everything all through training camp. It's a very different dynamic.
- 39:22Speaker 6: I guess this team very different dynamic than.
- 39:24Speaker 2: The first one.
- 39:25Speaker 1: It is, and they are more bought in to the
- 39:28Speaker 1: collective than they were then. I think that comes from
- 39:31Speaker 1: Mike McDonald. I think Pete Carroll championed the individual. Mike
- 39:35Speaker 1: McDonald champions the team. And I'm not saying Carol was wrong.
- 39:38Speaker 1: He's in Mount Rushmore of Seattle sports figures history went
- 39:41Speaker 1: to two super Bowls one one. But McDonald values the
- 39:45Speaker 1: collective and he's got players now who say, oh this worked,
- 39:49Speaker 1: we won a super Bowl championship doing it in this
- 39:51Speaker 1: new coach's way. Let's listen to this guy and I
- 39:55Speaker 1: think the difference is that just that individual Pete Carroll,
- 39:58Speaker 1: team collective Mike mc donald both got Super Bowl championships,
- 40:02Speaker 1: and but I think that that buy in is what's
- 40:06Speaker 1: unique to this dam.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree.
- 40:07Speaker 6: I would agree it's Uh, we'll talk a little bit
- 40:09Speaker 6: about that today and college college sports are Senator Maria
- 40:13Speaker 6: Cantwell on with Ted Cruz, whoa Marie Campbell and Ted
- 40:18Speaker 6: Cruz coming together to put a bill, a bipartisan college
- 40:20Speaker 6: sports bill.
- 40:21Speaker 2: I know, like.
- 40:24Speaker 6: Really that when you look at it on the surface,
- 40:27Speaker 6: wakes makes way too much sense.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Which means it won't get past correct one hundred percent.
- 40:33Speaker 6: Uh, we'll go through that a little bit.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Uh.
- 40:34Speaker 6: If they missed it yesterday our Tylecott interview, man oh
- 40:37Speaker 6: man was he He was fun. And then they brought
- 40:41Speaker 6: up Justin and Andrews brought this up. They said, who
- 40:45Speaker 6: does tylecottas sound like? So we're gonna we're gonna play
- 40:48Speaker 6: the title Cootty Interview in the one o'clock hour and
- 40:50Speaker 6: then at two o'clock we're gonna we're gonna we have
- 40:52Speaker 6: I think he sounds a lot of our listeners said
- 40:54Speaker 6: he sounded like one person. They thought he sounded like
- 40:57Speaker 6: somebody else. Both foot ball coaches, So we'll play those
- 41:02Speaker 6: all three side by side. Nettle comparison game coming up
- 41:04Speaker 6: at two o'clock as well today, So coming up.
- 41:07Speaker 1: That's Ian, that's Anderson Hurst, that's Jessamond McIntyre. Coming up
- 41:11Speaker 1: to next, Greg Bell, the News Tribune and Christopher Head.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Thanks for listening. We'll do it again tomorrow ten to noon.
- 41:16Speaker 1: End's up next on ninety three point three k JRFM
