Transcript
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abaddi bringing you five Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It's been a week, huh.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I feel like this week I was not really productive
- 0:28Speaker 1: at all. I mean, I feel like I'm in this
- 0:31Speaker 1: holding pattern where I'm getting everything done that I need
- 0:34Speaker 1: to get done, but I'm not exceeding the status quo.
- 0:38Speaker 2: And I know that.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It's okay and I have to have some grace with myself,
- 0:42Speaker 1: but it just it feels a little bit, you know
- 0:47Speaker 1: what I mean that our feeling. That's how I feel anyway.
- 0:52Speaker 1: For five Minute Friday this week, I'm talking about my
- 0:55Speaker 1: great love New York City.
- 0:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yesterday a friend of mine, she reached out to me
- 1:04Speaker 1: and she told me in a text message that she
- 1:07Speaker 1: was going to hopefully sublet her apartment at the end
- 1:11Speaker 1: of July and move back to where she's from in Portland.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And I didn't really know how to respond. I mean,
- 1:19Speaker 1: it's a conversation that I've heard a lot lately, especially,
- 1:23Speaker 1: I mean since the beginning of the pandemic, so many
- 1:26Speaker 1: of my friends, you know, have been either leaving the
- 1:29Speaker 1: city temporarily or making the move out of the city,
- 1:33Speaker 1: possibly for good. And it's been really interesting because their
- 1:39Speaker 1: decisions have me asking myself what it is that I
- 1:43Speaker 1: want and time and time again. When I come back
- 1:46Speaker 1: to this question, where do I want to be? I
- 1:51Speaker 1: just I think about New York in all of its glory.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I think about the magic that it has. I think
- 1:57Speaker 1: about that here you can literally be whoever you want
- 2:00Speaker 1: to be, whenever you want to be them, even in
- 2:03Speaker 1: a pandemic. I mean, let's reflect first on my pre
- 2:06Speaker 1: pandemic life. Right, Like, I could literally go to a
- 2:09Speaker 1: hot yoga class at lins Den and I could be
- 2:13Speaker 1: there next to celebrities. I could take a quick shower
- 2:17Speaker 1: and then be at a rooftop bar in minutes, overlooking
- 2:21Speaker 1: the Empire State Building like it was no thing, just casual.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I could go bouldering in Central Park and run over
- 2:30Speaker 1: one of three different bridges. I think to Brooklyn, and
- 2:34Speaker 1: I could go surfing at Rockaway and eat great tacos,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and all of that can be done in the same city.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I think about the magic that is walking out of
- 2:45Speaker 1: my door in the morning and I don't know where
- 2:48Speaker 1: he lives, but the same man is wearing a dress
- 2:51Speaker 1: shirt and pants, and he knows my name, and he
- 2:53Speaker 1: says Hi, and he tells me to have a good day.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I mean, I think about New York, and I think
- 3:00Speaker 1: about all the great stuff that has happened since I've
- 3:02Speaker 1: moved here. I think about running the marathon four times.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I think about the crazy interaction which was going for
- 3:09Speaker 1: my dream job and walking into the editor in chief's
- 3:13Speaker 1: office itself and telling her that I might not know
- 3:15Speaker 1: everything that I need to know as listed for the opportunity,
- 3:20Speaker 1: but I was going to do that better than anybody
- 3:22Speaker 1: else that walked in there, and the next day getting
- 3:25Speaker 1: a call and them telling me that I got the
- 3:26Speaker 1: job I got. I think about going out in the
- 3:29Speaker 1: meatpacking district on a Tuesday until three am, and I
- 3:32Speaker 1: think about first dates, and there have been a lot
- 3:36Speaker 1: of them, and I think about the really good ones, right.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I once went on a first date with a guy
- 3:42Speaker 1: that ended with Canoli's sitting on Grand Street, And when
- 3:46Speaker 1: we were having a beer post Connoli, we were sitting
- 3:49Speaker 1: in this small Italian restaurant bar kind of thing, and
- 3:53Speaker 1: the three piece band was playing at Last by Edda James,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and he kissed me, Like what kind of New York
- 3:58Speaker 1: moment is that? I think about coming into my own
- 4:03Speaker 1: here and you know, it's not lost on me that
- 4:06Speaker 1: a lot of the things that I'm talking about, it's
- 4:07Speaker 1: like they can't happen right now. You know, life is
- 4:10Speaker 1: different now, and while like New York is the city
- 4:15Speaker 1: that never sleeps, I go outside and I feel a
- 4:18Speaker 1: little bit like she's resting now.
- 4:20Speaker 2: But the magic is still there.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Right When I talk to people about what it feels
- 4:26Speaker 1: like to be here right now, it feels like everything
- 4:28Speaker 1: is different, but still everything is the same. My heart
- 4:31Speaker 1: still feels the same. When I walk out the door
- 4:33Speaker 1: of my apartment, I still feel like there is so
- 4:36Speaker 1: much more for me to do here. I feel like
- 4:39Speaker 1: I am my best self here. And trust me, I've
- 4:42Speaker 1: had the opportunity to go a lot of really great places,
- 4:46Speaker 1: a lot of them. But when I walk down the
- 4:48Speaker 1: block after I've eaten dinner and I see the people,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and for a second I close my eyes, it's like,
- 4:54Speaker 1: in my gut, in my heart, in my soul, I
- 4:57Speaker 1: know that I'm still in the place that I'm suppose
- 5:00Speaker 1: to be.
- 5:01Speaker 2: It's funny. Last night I was laying in my bed.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I've been watching every single episode of Sex and the
- 5:06Speaker 1: City from season one. Can't believe I'm saying this, but
- 5:09Speaker 1: I've actually never done this, so it's been a little
- 5:11Speaker 1: quarantine project of mine. And I'm finally on season five,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I think so. In the episode, the girls are talking
- 5:18Speaker 1: about this idea that we all only might get one
- 5:21Speaker 1: or two great loves, and they're worried because they're wondering
- 5:24Speaker 1: if they've wasted these great loves or whatever. And that
- 5:27Speaker 1: night they go to a party with a bunch of
- 5:28Speaker 1: sailors that are in town for fleet week, and Carrie
- 5:31Speaker 1: has this fun interaction with a really really cute sailor
- 5:35Speaker 1: by the way, who I may or may not have
- 5:37Speaker 1: googled this actor's name today, and the sailor tells Carrie
- 5:41Speaker 1: that New York isn't for him, and in her like
- 5:45Speaker 1: closing monologue, she says that maybe her great love, after all,
- 5:51Speaker 1: is New York City. And I just thought that it
- 5:54Speaker 1: was so appropriately timed for me, such a sap, because
- 5:59Speaker 1: if you ask me right now, if there was anywhere
- 6:02Speaker 1: in the world that I would want to be, like,
- 6:04Speaker 1: where is that?
- 6:06Speaker 2: To be honest, it's still right here at home in
- 6:11Speaker 2: New York.
- 6:13Speaker 1: So my prompt for you this week, if you could
- 6:17Speaker 1: be anywhere with anyone right now, where would you be.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I just smiled after I said that out loud because
- 6:26Speaker 1: I was thinking about who I would want to be
- 6:28Speaker 1: with and it made me.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Feel like I should tell this person that. Okay.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Highlights and of course all of the things I'm mentioning,
- 6:36Speaker 1: the links to them are in the show notes. First
- 6:39Speaker 1: things first, speaking of New York, the New York or
- 6:42Speaker 1: Nowhere confetti capsule collection.
- 6:44Speaker 2: If you follow me on Instagram, you've seen that I have.
- 6:47Speaker 1: A lot of no Lita, New York or Nowhere art
- 6:50Speaker 1: around my apartment and right now they just launch a
- 6:53Speaker 1: capsule collection and celebration of Pride and it's a lot
- 6:56Speaker 1: of my favorite prints, just jazzed up in all the
- 7:00Speaker 1: remote colors. And the proceeds from the sales of these items,
- 7:05Speaker 1: which include prints, it's postcards, sweatshirts, t shirts, proceeds will
- 7:10Speaker 1: be donated to the Trevor Project. If you've never heard
- 7:13Speaker 1: of the Trevor Project, it's a leading national organization providing
- 7:16Speaker 1: crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and questioning young people under twenty five. So definitely give
- 7:27Speaker 1: that a look. Read Cleo Wades Where to begin? I
- 7:32Speaker 1: think This book came out last year. I've had it
- 7:34Speaker 1: for a while now. I keep going back to it
- 7:36Speaker 1: because it's on the desk on my bookshelf. And she
- 7:40Speaker 1: writes on the back cover that the words in this
- 7:42Speaker 1: book are what stopped me from walking away from the
- 7:45Speaker 1: problems of the world during tough times. And I really,
- 7:48Speaker 1: really really feel that I pulled this quote out today.
- 7:52Speaker 1: There is not a single conversation that kindness cannot make
- 7:56Speaker 1: infinitely better. I think that right now a lot of
- 8:00Speaker 1: us are having hard conversations, and sometimes those conversations can
- 8:04Speaker 1: have disagreement, and I think what's important to remember is
- 8:07Speaker 1: that although you may not agree with people, that doesn't
- 8:11Speaker 1: mean that you need to stop being a kind human.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Just a highlight worth pointing out. Next up, I'll listen
- 8:20Speaker 1: to share with you a podcast this week, how to
- 8:21Speaker 1: Make Journaling Work for You from Life Kit by NPR.
- 8:25Speaker 1: You know, I'm a huge fan of journaling. I feel
- 8:27Speaker 1: like I talk about it all the time of the podcast.
- 8:30Speaker 1: For me, it's looked very, very different over the years.
- 8:33Speaker 1: But this episode from life Kit, it's a really popular
- 8:36Speaker 1: health and fitness podcast in the iTunes store. It's only
- 8:38Speaker 1: thirteen minutes and it offers up a ton of benefits
- 8:42Speaker 1: to the practice that are literally undeniable, as well as
- 8:45Speaker 1: actionable tips to help you get started. Two of the
- 8:48Speaker 1: prompts that they offer this week that I thought were buzzy,
- 8:51Speaker 1: what's missing from your life that would make you smile more?
- 8:54Speaker 1: And in the vein of Hurdle, if there was something
- 8:57Speaker 1: you could tell your younger self, what would that be.
- 9:01Speaker 1: One last highlight this week doctor Darien Sutton. I talked
- 9:04Speaker 1: to him for the show a few months ago now,
- 9:07Speaker 1: right when the coronavirus pandemic began. He is just a
- 9:11Speaker 1: wealth of knowledge and literally I have been so refreshed
- 9:15Speaker 1: and uplifted by his positivity during this time, but also
- 9:18Speaker 1: just so grateful for what he has to offer. He's
- 9:21Speaker 1: constantly bringing up new studies. His Instagram is super informational
- 9:26Speaker 1: and I think you guys should really just give it
- 9:29Speaker 1: a look. If you haven't already subscribed to the Weekly Hurdle,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you can find all of these highlights and more in there,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and I highly encourage you to do so. Also in there,
- 9:40Speaker 1: this week, I'm talking about two deals that you need
- 9:43Speaker 1: to know about. The first is the best of Beam.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You've heard me talk about Beam CBD here on the
- 9:48Speaker 1: show before. They just released a best of Beam offering
- 9:52Speaker 1: which is basically a grab bag of their essentials that
- 9:57Speaker 1: I swear by. It's only twenty nine dollar even though
- 10:00Speaker 1: it's a fifty nine dollars value. So if you've been
- 10:03Speaker 1: skeptical on CBD you want to try some of this stuff,
- 10:06Speaker 1: but you don't want to splurge for the full sized options,
- 10:08Speaker 1: this is a great place to get started. You can
- 10:11Speaker 1: use the code Hurdle at checkout for fifteen percent off
- 10:14Speaker 1: of your order.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Today again, head on over.
- 10:16Speaker 1: To BEAMTLC dot com and use the code Hurdle at
- 10:20Speaker 1: checkout for fifteen percent off. And last, but not least, today,
- 10:24Speaker 1: four Sigmatic is having a huge, huge, huge summer sale
- 10:28Speaker 1: that I cannot hype up enough. Basically, there's up to
- 10:31Speaker 1: fifty percent off some of their most popular products, including
- 10:34Speaker 1: two of my favorites, which are the peanut butter protein.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Literally I swear by this, I almost have it every
- 10:40Speaker 1: single day, as well as their.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Chaga mushroom coffee.
- 10:46Speaker 1: If you use the code Hurdle at checkout, you can
- 10:48Speaker 1: get an extra fifty percent off the sale. So really,
- 10:52Speaker 1: it is such such such a steal. If you use
- 10:56Speaker 1: protein regularly. I highly encourage you to try theirs. What's
- 11:00Speaker 1: different about this versus what you might already be using
- 11:03Speaker 1: is it also has mushrooms and adaptogens that can help
- 11:07Speaker 1: with things like focus and clarity and help you get
- 11:10Speaker 1: rid of stress and just in my mind, a total
- 11:13Speaker 1: no brainer.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And that's all for this week.
- 11:16Speaker 1: A huge shout out to all of the hurdlers running
- 11:18Speaker 1: in the one Million Miles for Justice Challenge. We're up
- 11:21Speaker 1: to one hundred and twenty five participants.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Y'all are the best.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I'm so happy to stand alongside you and fight for
- 11:31Speaker 1: what is right and show up for a great cause.
- 11:33Speaker 1: For more details on that, of course, as always in
- 11:36Speaker 1: the show notes, another hurdle conquered.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time,
