- 0:00Back with Gino as the Huskies get set to play in the Big East tournaments.
- 0:03Stuff to play either Providence for the second straight time, or team we
- 0:08haven't seen since December, the Butler Bulldogs. And that'll be an eleven thirty
- 0:11broadcast to Fisk and myself from Ohegan Sun Arena. Boy, you talk about
- 0:16the dichotomy of that. You know, you just saw Providence Saturday and you
- 0:20haven't played Butler since December. I thought Austin's team, after what they did
- 0:24against Yukon back in December, I thought they might be pretty good in league
- 0:27play. It took them a while to get going. But here they are
- 0:30with a chance to get a win in the biggest tournament. Play guys on
- 0:34Saturday. I know, it seems like forever ago that we played them,
- 0:37and I thought, wow, these guys are much improved. You know,
- 0:41they certainly look like a completely different team. They shoot the ball great,
- 0:50obviously, and you know, but changing the culture and you know, adding
- 0:57your own culture, it takes time, you know, And here too,
- 1:03I wouldn't be surprised if they if they win, I wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:07Providence wins. I mean, it's it's a game that's winnable by either team,
- 1:11and yeah one we just saw one. We have to go into the
- 1:17archives and find those find those videos. But that time of the year,
- 1:23you know, you really can't predict right, right, and and it's been
- 1:29a while since you've played a team in the last game of the season,
- 1:30and then your first opponent is the same team you played. I think Saint
- 1:34John's in the early nineties is the last time you did that. But I
- 1:37imagine it's a lot easier though, to prepare for an opponent. Let's say
- 1:40it is providence to prepare so you just saw them. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:44obviously that would be that would be the easiest thing for us. The fact
- 1:51that it was just last week weekend, but you know, the whole week
- 1:59leading up, you don't know who you're going to get, and then you
- 2:02don't know. You have an idea your bracket. You try to predict,
- 2:07but you really can't. So you know, Friday will be the first time
- 2:12that we'll practice where we actually know our opponent and have a pretty good idea.
- 2:16You know how this is all going to start? Yeah, I know.
- 2:20I think it was two days off, two days of practice, one
- 2:22day off, and then practice. Again, what's practice been like this week?
- 2:24Getting ready knowing that you had a few days at least kind of relax
- 2:29and get ready for the postseason. Yeah, it's been good. I mean,
- 2:34obviously rest is a premium right around now, but at the same time,
- 2:38you know, you have to get your work done. So the Tuesday
- 2:44and Wednesday we were able to let get our legs back, you know,
- 2:50get up and down the floor, get going, and and then Friday will
- 2:54start with the scouting reports, but just try to touch on a bunch of
- 3:00things that we think we're going to need, things that maybe we saw towards
- 3:06the end that there was some slippage, you know, But mostly it's let's
- 3:12get our legs back and let's fine tunes some things and things just want to
- 3:19play, you know, nobody wants to really spend a lot of time at
- 3:21practice this time of the year. Well, they're gonna have twelve days to
- 3:23do that after Monday. Let's hope to get to Monday. What about defensively,
- 3:29Gino down the stretch here a couple of games Villanova for good stretches.
- 3:32It was really there. Obviously, the first three quarters of the Providence game
- 3:36was really good, where do you think it is right now going into postseason
- 3:38play defensively with this group, you know, you look at the stats,
- 3:44you look at the numbers. I think it's been really really good, pretty
- 3:46consistent all year long. In the league. We're kind of limited as to
- 3:54what we can do, how much we can do. We have to play
- 3:59a certay. Yeah, you can't press much anymore. No, there's no
- 4:02there's no such thing as pressing. You know. We we have to play
- 4:09in a way that keeps us out of fout trouble, conserve some energy.
- 4:15And yet at the same time, you know, we've got to we got
- 4:18to get stops. And I think of all the teams that we played this
- 4:24year in a league with maybe very few exceptions, I don't think anybody's gotten
- 4:30their average, you know, whatever their average. And you know, I
- 4:31don't think anybody's you know, like gotten to that or wait or more than
- 4:36that. So I think the defense has probably been the most consistent part of
- 4:41our you know, of our team general. The third senior, of course,
- 4:44is Nika, who currently is tied with Renee for fourth in the old
- 4:47time assist list Saturday. I mean, she could pass not only Renee,
- 4:51but pass Gen to get in the top three. What is Nika's legacy going
- 4:56to be here at Yukon if she decides not to come back. I would
- 4:59say her her biggest you know impact, the image that people are gonna the
- 5:08lasting image that people are going to have, Amnika's passionate approach to the game,
- 5:15her her fiery leadership, her ability to inspire her teammates, the crowd.
- 5:29I I think she became a fan favorite really quickly because I think our
- 5:36fans can relate to that. You know that chen Risotti Jamel leads Shay rev
- 5:46kind of toughness, in your face kind of mentality, you know, And
- 5:54and that's been you know, that's been consistent all four years. And and
- 6:00each year she's gotten better as an offensive player. But the driving, the
- 6:05driving force, you know, on our team, I think that's how she'll
- 6:10be. She'll be remembered for sure. And of course the diving place she
- 6:13made in the fourth quarter going for the loose ball when she didn't have to.
- 6:15I mean that's a trademark here at Ukon. But that's Nika to a
- 6:18tea. Oh yeah, that's Nika to a tea. She doesn't give up
- 6:26on any place. She she loves conflict, you know, she loves the
- 6:31the challenge out there. Pretty good example that I think she took an elbow
- 6:40to the side of the head Saturday and came out. I mean during the
- 6:46you know, they were looking at it, the officials, and I asked
- 6:48her, you know everything all right, you know you're gonna be good,
- 6:51and she looked at me like why are you even asking? You know,
- 6:54like for some people that's like you're out a week. For her like this
- 7:00is how I play, so leave me alone. And you you just can't.
- 7:03You can't put a value, you know, on something like that final
- 7:08second with Gino. As we continue on the Wells Fargo, you kind of
