Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Spiritual Experience Gets Watered-Down or Lost As It is Transcribed into the Mental Framework
Transcript
- 0:01Human beings are essentially dependent on their mental
- 0:04perception. In order to function in the
- 0:07world. This mental perception frames,
- 0:10what we see how we experience it, and our interpretation.
- 0:16We'd us try to transcribe anything provided to us by our
- 0:20senses or provided directly to the mind without Reliance on the
- 0:25senses into a mental framework. It is similar to the idea that
- 0:31we try to translate one language into another, where the one
- 0:35language has heavy inflection inference and subtle meanings
- 0:40that are not truly captured in the language into which it has
- 0:44been translated. Something is lost in the
- 0:48translation. Similarly, there is a Divergence
- 0:53between the mental framework of The Logical, sequential,
- 0:57analytical intelligence and the creative comprehensive and
- 1:02combining intelligence thus, it is virtually impossible for The
- 1:08Logical intellect to understand and pick up all.
- 1:12That is being communicated, through a work of art.
- 1:16Or a piece of music, for instance.
- 1:20This provides a background for understanding.
- 1:22The difficulty, the mind has in perceiving understanding
- 1:27interpreting and communicating the truth and essence of
- 1:32spiritual experiences which require a different type or form
- 1:36of understanding, then that provided by the mind.
- 1:41For this reason, many people have deep spiritual experiences,
- 1:45wind up, having them in a state of deep inward Focus.
- 1:49A trance state of samadhi or else.
- 1:53They may describe what they can as a type of dream state.
- 1:58In these cases, there are simply no bridge between the spiritual
- 2:03experience and the mental framework, which provides the
- 2:07everyday, understanding of the individual.
- 2:10And thus, the experience cannot be explained or held by the
- 2:14mind. Additionally, the attempt to
- 2:17transcribe the experience into a mental framework, winds up
- 2:22Shifting, the focus from the spiritual where the experience
- 2:26actually occurs to the mental, where it is, simplified and
- 2:31stored, as memory without the power of the original
- 2:36experience. The mother writes quote, for
- 2:41most people, an experience exists, only when they can
- 2:44explain it to themselves. The experience in itself,
- 2:49contact with a certain force, a widening of Consciousness
- 2:54communion with an aspect of the Divine, no matter what
- 2:58experience. And opening of the being the
- 3:02breaking down of an obstacle crossing over a stage opening,
- 3:07new doors, all these experiences, if people cannot
- 3:12explain them to themselves in so many words and materialize them
- 3:17and precise thoughts. It is as though these did not
- 3:21exist, And it is just this need for expression.
- 3:26This need for translation, which causes the greater part of the
- 3:30experience to lose its power of action on the individual
- 3:34consciousness. How is it that you have a
- 3:37decisive definitive experience that for instance, you have
- 3:43opened the door of your psychic being you have been in communion
- 3:47with it, you know what this means and then it does not stay
- 3:54it is because it does not have a sufficiently tangible power,
- 3:58unless you can express it to yourself.
- 4:01The Experience Begins for, you only when you are able to
- 4:04describe it. Well, when you are able to
- 4:08describe it, the greater part of its intensity and its capacity
- 4:13of action for the inner and outer transformation has already
- 4:17evaporated there, it may be said that expression.
- 4:22Explanation is always a coming down.
- 4:26The experience itself is on a much higher plane.
- 4:31And quote, reference SRI aurobindo, and the mother
