- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Witt, and today we have very
- 0:06Speaker 1: special guest comedian, writer, actor, producer. And the best part
- 0:12Speaker 1: I have to add, well it's not the best part,
- 0:14Speaker 1: but the part that intrigues me the most that I
- 0:16Speaker 1: did not know is puppeteer Ay and I like, literally
- 0:21Speaker 1: when he said puppeteer, I was like, yeah, is that
- 0:25Speaker 1: what I think it is? Yeah, So I'm very excited
- 0:27Speaker 1: to have a comedian CP in the building.
- 0:30Speaker 2: What's going on? But thank you all for having me. Man.
- 0:33Speaker 2: First of all, I'm a big fan of the show,
- 0:35Speaker 2: believe it or not, like because I'm greedy to know
- 0:38Speaker 2: what everybody else be eating, you know what I'm saying,
- 0:40Speaker 2: And it's like, man like, so I'm excited to be
- 0:43Speaker 2: here and bring my little dish.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you're like really rolling out the cooking part of
- 1:11Speaker 1: this dish before you announce what the dish is. I
- 1:14Speaker 1: will have to I do want listeners to know I
- 1:16Speaker 1: actually tried to get CP from the concept of this show.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I think I tried to get you, So it has
- 1:23Speaker 1: to have been almost two years to get you. Just
- 1:26Speaker 1: to let you know, and then I had to tap
- 1:27Speaker 1: the husband and be like, come on, man, come on man,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know, and then I think one day we're having
- 1:33Speaker 1: a bad day and he's like shot me a text
- 1:35Speaker 1: like you see, I reached out to see pe for you,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and I was like.
- 1:39Speaker 2: He did, he did? He was like me and my wife. Man,
- 1:42Speaker 2: he ran down the man. I'm familiar with that. I
- 1:45Speaker 2: just I just it was, you know, I'm excited reaching
- 1:48Speaker 2: out to me, man, But I'm excited to be here too.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I was really And then I stayed on top. Did
- 1:52Speaker 1: you notice? I was like, you're gonna be here, You're
- 1:54Speaker 1: gonna be here. I tried to guilt you in two
- 1:56Speaker 1: I don't know if you caught that.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I tried to throw it a little bit manipulation on
- 2:00Speaker 1: the last.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Nah, I was gonna be I just came off the road.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So the date was perfect. I was, I was, I
- 2:07Speaker 2: set it time to be here. So I'm here.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I'm excited to have you. So what are you going
- 2:12Speaker 1: to be cooking me today?
- 2:15Speaker 2: I call this my shrimp fried ramen noodles. Okay, all
- 2:20Speaker 2: right now, this dish man, I was, you know, this
- 2:23Speaker 2: is like when I first started cooking, right, It's like
- 2:27Speaker 2: one of the things that I used to practice cooking,
- 2:31Speaker 2: because noodles give you like a good base, and so
- 2:33Speaker 2: you could like doctor them up and learn how to
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know, like really set your taste buds off with noodles.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Really was noodles and eggs, so like different kind of
- 2:43Speaker 2: alets and different kind of noodles was like how I
- 2:46Speaker 2: learned how to put stuff together. And you could use
- 2:48Speaker 2: that kind of technique on any food. Yeah, you know
- 2:51Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Just you know, you gotta have a
- 2:52Speaker 2: base and a way to season it up.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So yeah, when you said ramen, I usually actually, anytime
- 2:58Speaker 1: I guess is romen because it is the number one
- 3:00Speaker 1: broke to broke dish uh in period. So every time
- 3:06Speaker 1: romy comes up, I'm like, unless you're doing something crazy
- 3:09Speaker 1: with it, is not welcome on the show. Come try again,
- 3:11Speaker 1: give me another dish. But I was really I had
- 3:15Speaker 1: a low bar set for you in my mind, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: then you came here and you're pulling seasonings and you're
- 3:20Speaker 1: choosing sauces, and I said, oh, snap, he's really about
- 3:24Speaker 1: to cook for me. So this is this is legit.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So since it's legit, move on up out to see it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Get in the kitchen. All right, all right, So what
- 3:34Speaker 2: I like to do is I like to start with
- 3:40Speaker 2: my little bass so like I'm my little shrimp sauce.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Right, so I do like you don't start boiling the
- 3:46Speaker 1: water versus.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I guess I can't start boiling the water.
- 3:49Speaker 2: My bad. This is an electric stuff I usually got
- 3:51Speaker 2: to Yeah, so it's the top.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what you're doing. Just so you know
- 3:55Speaker 1: my history on the show. People know this is I
- 3:57Speaker 1: burned guest dishes. So if I give too much and
- 4:00Speaker 1: put your welcome to shut me up, yeah, because I'll
- 4:03Speaker 1: be like nah, nah, it should be good, and they'd
- 4:05Speaker 1: be like, nah, it's burning. So now I like try
- 4:08Speaker 1: to not get involved in the cooking process.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Okay, so this you know, like okay, so let me
- 4:16Speaker 2: let me back you up. My dad was a chef
- 4:19Speaker 2: in like like strip clubs and like uh like bars
- 4:24Speaker 2: and ship back in the day, right he was. He
- 4:26Speaker 2: was a nigga making the steak bites and the you
- 4:28Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, you know, the little wings and stuff.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And then my mother is a caterer. And so my
- 4:36Speaker 2: mom caters to this day and she is a pastry
- 4:39Speaker 2: chef for uh some of the major casinos downtown in Detroit.
- 4:45Speaker 2: She actually just retired.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Are both your parents own Detroit?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yes? Wow.
- 4:51Speaker 1: First of all, this is why this host cooking process
- 4:55Speaker 1: of your life snuck up on me, because you had
- 4:57Speaker 1: secret aces in the hole. You had your parents right now.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Did they meet because they were both into cooking?
- 5:04Speaker 2: No, they met when they were thirteen.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh wow, they've been together like their whole lives.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Uh, they've been they've been known each other the whole
- 5:13Speaker 2: They're not together. Oh yeah, yeah, but you know they've
- 5:16Speaker 2: been you know, yeah, they were kind of like really
- 5:20Speaker 2: good friends, you know what I'm saying. Of course they
- 5:22Speaker 2: were a boyfriend and girlfriend back in the day. But
- 5:23Speaker 2: then also you know, they they were just young, so
- 5:26Speaker 2: they went through that whole you know, just trying to
- 5:29Speaker 2: find me, you finding you, you know, but they made
- 5:32Speaker 2: me and I was pretty dope. Now I'm gonna I
- 5:34Speaker 2: got the butter going.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I like how you use a lot of butter. Yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 1: that's my type of.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Well, yeah, this butter is gonna be the base. So
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, in this sauce, we don't just use the
- 5:43Speaker 2: ray of noodle packet saucecye. That's the thing. We know
- 5:46Speaker 2: we're not worried about that that packet sauce. Yeah, yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 2: this is our this is our sauce. I'm putting some
- 5:51Speaker 2: onions in this butter. Start getting these onions to saute. Okay,
- 5:57Speaker 2: someone provided some excellent corn. I'm gonna start doing this corn.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yes that I'm gonna wait to add the corn because
- 6:02Speaker 2: I went to, uh, I don't want no corn in
- 6:04Speaker 2: my shrimp.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Just so y'all know, I was the one that added
- 6:07Speaker 1: the corn. Uh Cep set Cep said vegetables that I
- 6:11Speaker 1: just said, oh, that must mean corn, and he was
- 6:13Speaker 1: like corn. I'm at onions and I was like, oh.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Okay, I'm adding a little bit of garlic powder just
- 6:20Speaker 2: to this. I'm gonna have some missed garlic too, but
- 6:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna add some creole seasoning.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:26Speaker 2: So now this is this is when I called this
- 6:29Speaker 2: a broke dish. This is just what I was making.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You know, my mom was at work. Uh you know.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It was certain stuff that she would trust me to
- 6:39Speaker 2: cook without burning the house down, right, the stuff that
- 6:42Speaker 2: I was allowed to mess with. And I was you know,
- 6:45Speaker 2: the noodles, the little pepper in there.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But you were making ramen noodles like this when you
- 6:50Speaker 1: were a kid.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, after a while, I started like, you know, the
- 6:54Speaker 2: more the shrimp, uh whatever we had. So if you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: like my mom would make like her little shrimp Alfredo
- 7:02Speaker 2: and stuff like that. She had a great poster she
- 7:04Speaker 2: used to make. Before all the hood rats was making
- 7:06Speaker 2: it as they number one, This mom Deuce was doing
- 7:09Speaker 2: it for real. Get this girl. I can hear this
- 7:11Speaker 2: fresh girl that's gonna be fire on this shrimp and
- 7:15Speaker 2: so well. She would have these little bags of these
- 7:16Speaker 2: little shrimp, you know, and I would sneak a couple
- 7:19Speaker 2: and you know, yeah, like make my little I love
- 7:22Speaker 2: shrimp fried rice, right, but I hate it making rice.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I still do to this day.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I hate making.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I hate making rice.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I don't know why that it alone.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I like to manipulate, you know what I'm saying. I like,
- 7:31Speaker 2: I like to cook, and.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I hate making. You know what I hate making worse
- 7:35Speaker 1: than rice is the jasmine rice. I'd be so nervous.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna mess it up.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Man. My wife is that's her. That's her department, the rice.
- 7:42Speaker 2: So when they want rice, I'm adding this shrimp. These
- 7:45Speaker 2: are the little baby shrimp. These are little shrimp abortions.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I don't even know where these shrimps. Shrimp never staw
- 7:49Speaker 2: the light a day, you know what I'm saying. These
- 7:51Speaker 2: trimp ain't lived with fifteen to twenty minutes.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I don't even know how they devein. Those little baby shrimps.
- 7:58Speaker 2: They ain't got no vein. These are shrimps.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I mean, like peel it and stuff.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Ohous, some little shrimp embryo. These ain't never.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So you up in here, saltage. This is definitely not
- 8:09Speaker 1: what I imagined eating ramen with you would look like. Really,
- 8:13Speaker 1: And the fact that you're saying that we're not gonna
- 8:15Speaker 1: use the ramen package.
- 8:16Speaker 2: We are going to use the ramen pack. We're not
- 8:19Speaker 2: gonna submerse it in the water. We're gonna get this going.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It's gonna be almost like a I don't want to
- 8:26Speaker 2: call it like a roof, but you know, just like
- 8:27Speaker 2: a little base. And we're gonna add water to this,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and they add the season into this, then add our
- 8:32Speaker 2: noodles over.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Here, so it's gonna be like dry, almost.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Gonna be dry. Yeah, exactly. Not so much.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You like Chinese food.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I love China.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I love Chinese.
- 8:41Speaker 2: We had a Chinese food restaurant on seven Mile Telegraph
- 8:43Speaker 2: called China One. M h. I'm pretty sure it wasn't
- 8:47Speaker 2: authentic Chinese food, but man, that shit was fied.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Is it as good as New York Chinese?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah? No, I think that the best Chinese food I've
- 8:56Speaker 2: ever had was in Saint Louis. Really. Yeah, they got
- 8:58Speaker 2: the best Chinese food out here.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Really.
- 9:01Speaker 2: DC got some good Chinese food too, But York louis
- 9:07Speaker 2: New York. Problem. Like, man, y'all, just y'all don't ever
- 9:10Speaker 2: have to leave there. Y'all think everything y'all.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Do is the best pizza. We got, the best Chinese,
- 9:14Speaker 1: we got the best everything.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Detroit Stole pizza is fired.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I've had it. I'm be honest.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, but it must be a New York thing, because
- 9:23Speaker 1: I promise you ain't nothing messing with our pizza. Every
- 9:25Speaker 1: time I go to Detroit, they try to say, oh, no,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I wasn't impressed with your pizza.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna let this come to a little simmer, I
- 9:33Speaker 2: will say.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Though, when I go to Detroit, my ignorant self is
- 9:36Speaker 1: still obsessed with eight miles, so I'm always like, show me,
- 9:39Speaker 1: show me, where eight mile is and he'll just point
- 9:41Speaker 1: and be like, there it is.
- 9:44Speaker 2: In there too. Get that going for real?
- 9:47Speaker 1: Up, So take me back to like what's going on
- 9:51Speaker 1: during this ram and time? You're at home cooking alone?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Man? So I'm an only child, so I don't have
- 9:57Speaker 2: any siblings, right, I'm coming home from school.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Single parent, household.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Single parent man. My mom was single, you know.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But both parents were in your life.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know, like you know, my dad was
- 10:12Speaker 2: doing his thing. He was across town. He was in
- 10:14Speaker 2: a place called Brightmore. I'm making this dish. I'm in
- 10:18Speaker 2: sixth grade right at this point, I'm walking to school
- 10:21Speaker 2: or taking the city bus. You know, I got a
- 10:24Speaker 2: food stamp. I go to the corner store, give me
- 10:27Speaker 2: a twenty five cent pack of gum or a twenty
- 10:32Speaker 2: five cent bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You could do that with food stamps. Back then, I
- 10:36Speaker 1: thought food stamps was only was limited more than because
- 10:39Speaker 1: that was.
- 10:39Speaker 2: The real stamps. And then you would get a seventy
- 10:45Speaker 2: five cent real back. Put fifty cent on the bus.
- 10:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, I'm gonna get some of
- 10:50Speaker 2: this corner here. Do you smell that it smells good.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He secretly been hanging on the corner, so you should
- 10:57Speaker 1: have seen he put a little bit of corn in there,
- 10:59Speaker 1: like a like a mouthful.
- 11:02Speaker 2: But I tell you about corn in our next podcast
- 11:05Speaker 2: that we do. I don't want to spoil everybody, you
- 11:08Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And so you you making food as a sixth grader.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Home watching Power Rangers, Okay, you know what I'm saying,
- 11:17Speaker 2: rushing home to see what's about to happen.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I love Powers Range was so dope that.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It was like our real soap opera. You know what
- 11:25Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 11:27Speaker 1: So at this point, do you even know that you're
- 11:30Speaker 1: into comedy yet? What's going on in your life?
- 11:34Speaker 2: One? In my life, I've changed schools a lot. Well,
- 11:36Speaker 2: you got a single mom. You know she didn't she
- 11:38Speaker 2: didn't buy a house or like I order, we were
- 11:40Speaker 2: renting a lot. So I mean changing schools, changing neighborhoods,
- 11:45Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Trying that down a little bit.
- 11:47Speaker 2: It's starting to staw tell a little hard, changing hoods,
- 11:53Speaker 2: changing rules to the hood. And so you know, being
- 11:56Speaker 2: funny was kind of like a way to kind of
- 11:59Speaker 2: like make some friends and kind of getting motherfuckers off
- 12:03Speaker 2: my back. You feel me like, you know, just like
- 12:07Speaker 2: you Tray, we don't have a lot of gangs as
- 12:09Speaker 2: it pertains to like bloods and cribs is just like neighborhoods,
- 12:13Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, And so you know, you shit,
- 12:15Speaker 2: I was. I was new to every neighborhood and so
- 12:19Speaker 2: that was you know, that was kind of like a.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Was it like a more natural protective mechanism or was
- 12:25Speaker 1: it just like a did you like did you know
- 12:28Speaker 1: you were you were also being funny to survive?
- 12:32Speaker 2: Well, I started to like being funny, right, I started
- 12:34Speaker 2: to like what it got me? Like, you know, girls
- 12:37Speaker 2: was laughing, and you know, it was just it was
- 12:40Speaker 2: people wanted me to be in the friend group. Hey CP,
- 12:43Speaker 2: come well, Chris Pole, come sit with us, Cause I
- 12:45Speaker 2: wasn't CPA, Chris Pole, come sit with us. You know,
- 12:49Speaker 2: da da da he funny man. I got fourth hour
- 12:51Speaker 2: for him. And it just became like, you know, then
- 12:54Speaker 2: I started roasting people because people was into that. They
- 12:58Speaker 2: really wanted to see me roast people. And I started
- 13:00Speaker 2: to kind of like almost like you know, I just
- 13:05Speaker 2: learned how to how to kind of fall into that
- 13:08Speaker 2: acceptance for myself, like I liked how it felt. I
- 13:14Speaker 2: liked how it felt when people thought I was funny,
- 13:16Speaker 2: and you know, I would I would start, people will
- 13:22Speaker 2: start saying like, man, you should be a comedian even
- 13:24Speaker 2: when he was kids, right, and it's like that's like
- 13:26Speaker 2: positive reinforcement. That's why I don't let nobody speak bullshit
- 13:30Speaker 2: over my kids. You know what I'm saying, Like, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 2: it's only possibilities, right, you know, I they and gymnastis
- 13:35Speaker 2: you could be a gymnast. Because it was little stuff
- 13:37Speaker 2: like that that was like I'm asking my mom, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 2: for like Richard Pryor tapes and Eddie Murphy tapes. She's
- 13:43Speaker 2: so excited because that's her level of comedy. She likes that.
- 13:47Speaker 2: So me and her and my dad, we would you know,
- 13:49Speaker 2: I would watch it with my dad. I watch it
- 13:51Speaker 2: with my mom. I would get tapes for Christmas. You know.
- 13:55Speaker 1: But this is while you were young.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I was young, young, nine years old, and so because
- 13:59Speaker 2: I first started being funny in like fourth grade, that
- 14:01Speaker 2: was that was when it started to really hit. Like
- 14:04Speaker 2: that's when I started being like ooh, I was at
- 14:05Speaker 2: a new school. I had just left left a private
- 14:08Speaker 2: school and went to a public school, so the curriculum
- 14:11Speaker 2: was like super easy, and it was just like I
- 14:14Speaker 2: got enough time to be fooling around and I started
- 14:17Speaker 2: making kids laugh a lot.
- 14:18Speaker 1: But you weren't would you consider itself like a class
- 14:21Speaker 1: clown funny or were you just.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Like so, I wanted to be class clown bad right?
- 14:26Speaker 2: Like I remember, I remember one time I went to
- 14:29Speaker 2: this new school for eighth grade. It was a school
- 14:31Speaker 2: for the gift that we have this meat test in
- 14:35Speaker 2: Michigan in the seventh grade. And I took my meat
- 14:38Speaker 2: test and I got a ninety eight percent on I
- 14:39Speaker 2: was super smart, you know. And so they moved me
- 14:43Speaker 2: to a school kind of like for the gifted. And
- 14:47Speaker 2: I was there for one year and I won class clown,
- 14:49Speaker 2: and I was just it was just important to me
- 14:51Speaker 2: that I got a class clown, because you know, it's
- 14:54Speaker 2: just like you hear about the mock election, and that's
- 14:56Speaker 2: what you want to be. You know what I'm saying.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I wanted to be class clown. Looking back, that's stupid,
- 15:01Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying a little bit.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Why do you think so?
- 15:03Speaker 2: I mean, well, I get it, I trust me.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I was a class I was voted class loudest, but yeah,
- 15:08Speaker 1: basically class clown. I mean, all the teachers signed my
- 15:11Speaker 1: yearbooks like please, whatever you do, don't get into the
- 15:13Speaker 1: entertainment business and go to college. And of course I
- 15:16Speaker 1: didn't really take their advice, but whatever, so I think
- 15:21Speaker 1: they knew. I went to college for like two years
- 15:25Speaker 1: and then I dropped out. But I dropped out to
- 15:28Speaker 1: pursue a company that I was building.
- 15:30Speaker 2: At the beause. You know how you like some of
- 15:33Speaker 2: your onions to be a little crisp.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I like all my onions to be grilled, but mixing.
- 15:38Speaker 2: With the with the so you had a little crunch
- 15:40Speaker 2: to them too.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That's what the corn is for.
- 15:43Speaker 2: The corn is not for the crunk.
- 15:44Speaker 1: The corn has an extra texture to him.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I'm telling you, how do these shrimp smell to you?
- 15:49Speaker 1: Everything smells good. I see a lot of white onion
- 15:52Speaker 1: in there, though, so I'm nervous for you. By the way,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I'm very honest about the dish. So if it's like okay,
- 16:00Speaker 1: wun be like okay.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I feel I was in sixth grade, God Jesus Christ, great, but.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I thought you could make us now.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I make this now with bigger shrimp. You know what
- 16:09Speaker 2: I'm saying, and a different kind of ions. But this
- 16:12Speaker 2: is all a sauce. Still don't remember. I still got
- 16:14Speaker 2: to pour some water in there.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I love how authentically real you're keeping this dish. So
- 16:18Speaker 1: I'm judging sixth grade CP right now.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is what he was doing. Okay
- 16:24Speaker 2: about this little cholesterol he was so?
- 16:28Speaker 1: Okay, So is your parents supporting the idea of you
- 16:31Speaker 1: wanting to become a comic or are you voicing it yet.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Officially supporting it? For sure? Okay, I'm starting to add.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You sound like my daughter when you said that's what
- 16:42Speaker 1: we say in my house all the time.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, my grand dad used to say that that's
- 16:47Speaker 2: my mom. Pick that ship up.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So they're supporting it. You're watching the the tapes of
- 16:57Speaker 1: all the iconic comedians. Is there any particular comedian that
- 17:02Speaker 1: you identified with the most at that time?
- 17:05Speaker 2: Growing up? Ed Murphy at that time? Right, I think
- 17:10Speaker 2: that Richard Pryor was a little freer than I think
- 17:16Speaker 2: I was ready to be at that time. You know
- 17:19Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Just you know, as a young person,
- 17:21Speaker 2: I'm like, what the hell is going on? He talking
- 17:22Speaker 2: about all kind of crazy shit? You know what? I'm saying.
- 17:27Speaker 2: So it was like, you know, Eddie Murphy was cool though,
- 17:32Speaker 2: Like you know what I'm saying, Like women wanted to
- 17:34Speaker 2: fuck Eddie Murphy and dudes wanted to be him at
- 17:37Speaker 2: the same time. You dudes, we wasn't really hating on Eddie,
- 17:41Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Look like it's gonna be wet, right, But yeah, it
- 17:44Speaker 1: looks extra liquidity, almost like a soup. But but you
- 17:48Speaker 1: said there's gonna be just noodles in there, So this
- 17:50Speaker 1: is right. Okay, So what's the next milestone for you?
- 17:57Speaker 1: Middle school? High school? What age do you actually leave Detroit.
- 18:03Speaker 2: College? Oh?
- 18:04Speaker 1: Did you go to college?
- 18:05Speaker 2: Yeah? I went to college.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Okay, Now you go to college. What do you go
- 18:11Speaker 1: to college for? If you were trying to be a comedian?
- 18:13Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing, like, you don't actually think you
- 18:16Speaker 2: can be a comedian, right, it doesn't start like that.
- 18:20Speaker 1: So you had you done any shows or anything before college?
- 18:23Speaker 1: So you just went straight from high school to college.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I went straight from high school, toky, I had done
- 18:27Speaker 2: know comedy shows. I would do stuff in school, right,
- 18:31Speaker 2: I was a part of the drama club, right, so
- 18:34Speaker 2: I would like, you know, do plays in school and
- 18:37Speaker 2: they would be hilarious. You know, people come down for
- 18:39Speaker 2: the for the assembly and they watch them. You know
- 18:44Speaker 2: I was killing them in those you know, I was
- 18:47Speaker 2: in the drama.
- 18:49Speaker 1: At that point. Did you know what it would take
- 18:51Speaker 1: to be a comedian?
- 18:52Speaker 2: Not at all? And as a matter of fact, like
- 18:54Speaker 2: I said, I wasn't even I didn't win class clown
- 18:56Speaker 2: in twelfth grade, which hurt my feelings. My friend still
- 19:00Speaker 2: laughing at me to this day. I was really hurt.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Like I got home from school and I was like
- 19:04Speaker 2: punching the air, like, uh, like he would get a
- 19:07Speaker 2: junior Are you serious?
- 19:11Speaker 1: It was that important to.
- 19:12Speaker 2: That important to me? But you know I wasn't. I
- 19:15Speaker 2: was in all honors classes, and you know those kids,
- 19:18Speaker 2: they saw more in me than to be class clown.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I'm like, fuck, y'all, I want to be class clown.
- 19:22Speaker 1: But what did did you get voted something?
- 19:24Speaker 2: Know?
- 19:24Speaker 1: Did you get like.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Class voted anything? Oh?
- 19:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you went home pissed.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I was pissed, Like wow, but I was cool with everybody,
- 19:31Speaker 2: but I wasn't best dressed, you know what I'm saying.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Like my mom, you know she was, she was doing
- 19:35Speaker 2: her best. You know what I'm saying like, I mean,
- 19:38Speaker 2: one time she bought me this, this race car jacket.
- 19:42Speaker 2: It was really popular back in the day, the race car.
- 19:44Speaker 2: They'd be like cheerios and you know what I'm talking about.
- 19:48Speaker 2: First day I got it word to school, a nigga
- 19:50Speaker 2: robbed me. What gunpoint?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Gunpoint at what you were in high school?
- 19:57Speaker 2: Chool? Oh?
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Detroit's dangerous, man. I'm sorry. Like even even like
- 20:02Speaker 1: I'll watch like the Detroit News channel on social media,
- 20:05Speaker 1: which is probably the wrong thing to watch. But all
- 20:07Speaker 1: you see is like the Coney Island horror stories and stuff.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Add a little bit of hot sauce.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Mmm, did were you afraid to tell your mom about
- 20:18Speaker 1: the jacket?
- 20:21Speaker 2: A little bit? I'm sorry. We got a few different
- 20:25Speaker 2: kinds of hot sauces and a damn we just use
- 20:29Speaker 2: a little bit of this about you. I usually use
- 20:33Speaker 2: Frank's hot sauce back in the day.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Oh oh, is that why you were looking at that?
- 20:39Speaker 1: By the way, uh, if CP ever goes to your house,
- 20:41Speaker 1: he does check expiration dates on all food, just so
- 20:44Speaker 1: you know.
- 20:44Speaker 2: We be we be out here killing ourselves in old
- 20:46Speaker 2: ass peanut butters and ship We don't need that. We
- 20:48Speaker 2: check your day.
- 20:49Speaker 1: You don't die from that.
- 20:50Speaker 2: You know that right, got slow? You don't die that day.
- 20:54Speaker 1: My rule, as long as there's no mold and as
- 20:56Speaker 1: long as you can eat around the mold, you're safe.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I know. That's old school. That's very old school. That's
- 21:02Speaker 2: old school. That's like back when that's like famine. That's
- 21:07Speaker 2: like you ever watched Walking Dead and they just walk
- 21:09Speaker 2: up in somebody house and started taking their talent afs
- 21:11Speaker 2: like any people died two years ago, you know what
- 21:14Speaker 2: I'm saying. But it's like at that point.
- 21:15Speaker 1: You would actually think that though, what about that they
- 21:20Speaker 1: died two years ago before you take the tilt off.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I'm just saying, it's like, god damn, you ain't check
- 21:24Speaker 2: the date. Like you know what I'm saying. Like my
- 21:27Speaker 2: granddad used to have batteries from the eighties, Like you
- 21:29Speaker 2: throw them as in there, like they need batteries about
- 21:31Speaker 2: to blow up.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I come from that era. I'm one of those
- 21:36Speaker 1: people that like, maybe we can stick the batteries in
- 21:37Speaker 1: the freezer and maybe they'll live longer.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So you see this disc right here.
- 21:42Speaker 1: It looks great, by the way, So this is just.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Some this is like this is what a sixth grader
- 21:46Speaker 2: does in trying to learn how to cook, and luckily
- 21:49Speaker 2: my mom and my dad were cool enough to let
- 21:51Speaker 2: me try a little shit like this. Now I would
- 21:54Speaker 2: do something like I would even put a little bit
- 21:56Speaker 2: of cheese in this, like some gouda or whatever we had.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I was thinking you were gonna say, parmesan.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Oh a parmesan for show. Oh okay, okay, do we
- 22:05Speaker 2: have any permis on here?
- 22:06Speaker 1: I think so you're hilarious. We're gonna throw the commercial
- 22:10Speaker 1: because CP needs parmesan and we're back.
- 22:15Speaker 2: So you're like I said, I usually we use parmesan,
- 22:17Speaker 2: and that's why I brought some right here. Uh and
- 22:22Speaker 2: it's fresh too today. Say it's twenty twenty four, so
- 22:24Speaker 2: this is we can be heavily. You're whole heavy handed
- 22:26Speaker 2: with this.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I love that you be checking the dates. You are
- 22:30Speaker 1: heavy handed for real with it.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I mean, I don't play when they're kind of my
- 22:33Speaker 2: table at Ali Lawdon, I'd be like, may you aren't
- 22:35Speaker 2: finna get tired, bros, I'm gonna have you streading that
- 22:37Speaker 2: bitch until they turned to an eraser.
- 22:39Speaker 1: All right, you actually don't even like Olive Garden. Surprisingly
- 22:43Speaker 1: you know you know what it is. It's because someone
- 22:45Speaker 1: told me that Olive Garden they really just reheat the food.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I heard they don't cook there.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I heard that too.
- 22:51Speaker 1: So Ever, since I heard that, like every dish to me,
- 22:54Speaker 1: all I keep thinking is microwaveable TV dinners, and I
- 22:57Speaker 1: just don't mess with microwaveable TV di.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I didn't put a lot of house sauce on here,
- 23:02Speaker 2: and we'll let you sauce it to you. So your liking,
- 23:05Speaker 2: thank you?
- 23:05Speaker 1: Oh this looks good. Hey, guys, this is this is
- 23:10Speaker 1: his this you know bad. When we first started, we
- 23:12Speaker 1: used to have the overhead cam. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 1: it used to be on top of My team would
- 23:17Speaker 1: hate me every time they'd have to put it in.
- 23:19Speaker 1: They'd be like, I hate this part. I'd be like,
- 23:21Speaker 1: we need it. We need the overhead shot.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Necessary to get that overhead shot porn created that. It
- 23:28Speaker 2: looks good.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I could see where the baby shrimps should be the
- 23:31Speaker 1: big shrimps.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But you know what, you wouldn't have as many. You
- 23:34Speaker 2: have about five six shrimp in there. You feel me
- 23:37Speaker 2: you should have done the whole thing shrimp in there.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I thought about that, but then it would have just
- 23:41Speaker 2: been like.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Ricey noodlely shrimp for the taste test one.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah, takes a little kick in there. It's a little
- 24:08Speaker 2: kick in there.
- 24:10Speaker 1: This actually doesn't remind me of Ramen at all, because
- 24:12Speaker 1: you completely transitioned it. I don't know if that's because
- 24:17Speaker 1: I was sucking on the cop drop, but this does
- 24:20Speaker 1: not remind me of Ramen. The only thing that reminds
- 24:23Speaker 1: me of Ramen is the noodle. I'm impressed.
- 24:27Speaker 2: It's like a little shrimp fried rice passed me Parson juice. Ooh,
- 24:32Speaker 2: there you go. Get heavy handed with it.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Yeah, when it comes to butter and cheese, I'm heavy handed.
- 24:39Speaker 2: That's that. New York and y'all love pasta.
- 24:42Speaker 1: We love Yeah, I mean we love y'all love cards.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna New York is like a card.
- 24:48Speaker 2: You go to New York you want to homemade cereal?
- 24:51Speaker 2: Like god damn yep. It taste a girl.
- 24:54Speaker 1: They can hear this is delicious, you can. You know,
- 24:58Speaker 1: if we were trapped in a hut, homeless, I'll be
- 25:01Speaker 1: your little bunker pal.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I appreciate it. You know what I'm saying, Ship bat
- 25:07Speaker 2: Watch Power Rangers. You know what I'm saying.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I think there's a chance I put too much parmesan
- 25:14Speaker 1: on it, but.
- 25:14Speaker 2: You change the texture.
- 25:16Speaker 1: No, I think I just took a bite of too much,
- 25:18Speaker 1: but this is delicious. I would have ever thought to add.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Onions the corn. I mean, you know, I can barely.
- 25:26Speaker 1: There's like three pieces of corn.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Is a favorite GMO.
- 25:32Speaker 1: GMO, Okay, I'm over it.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Back to your business.
- 25:38Speaker 1: So what do you go to college for.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I go to college for initially for veterinary science. Right.
- 25:51Speaker 1: You wanted to be a vet I.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Wanted to be a zoologist, right. I love animals. I
- 25:57Speaker 2: still love animals to this day. And I got animals,
- 26:00Speaker 2: and so I went to Michigan State and that's one
- 26:05Speaker 2: of the biggest schools for that, a lot of agriculture
- 26:08Speaker 2: and stuff like that. And then I saw that there
- 26:12Speaker 2: was kids there who came from farms and stuff who
- 26:14Speaker 2: was a lot more advancing and a lot more dedicated
- 26:17Speaker 2: than I was. And I'm just a kid from the
- 26:19Speaker 2: city who like cats and dogs and city and just
- 26:22Speaker 2: like sticking their hand up Kyle's asses, you know what
- 26:24Speaker 2: I'm saying. I was like, whoa, this is too advanced
- 26:26Speaker 2: for me. I just want to I want to see
- 26:28Speaker 2: pit bulls, and you know what, I'm.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Saying, but you said a zoologists wouldn't didn't you expect
- 26:32Speaker 1: to see some kind of foreign animals?
- 26:34Speaker 2: I did, But I think I just I was I
- 26:37Speaker 2: was more romanticizing the idea that was cool. Put it
- 26:40Speaker 2: like this, Mike Tyson, like tigers, right, he don't need
- 26:43Speaker 2: to be no zoologist. I just need to get rich
- 26:45Speaker 2: and get a tiger. That's all it bought down.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And you discovered that in college.
- 26:49Speaker 2: While in college, and I moved to engineering, right because
- 26:52Speaker 2: my mom and my whole family, they worked at Chrysler
- 26:56Speaker 2: and they always just to be like, man, the engineers
- 26:59Speaker 2: make the most money and it don't have to do anything,
- 27:01Speaker 2: so we want you to be that. I'm like, I
- 27:04Speaker 2: guess I don't want to do nothing with my life.
- 27:06Speaker 2: But I mean, you know what I'm saying, Like, so
- 27:09Speaker 2: I tried engineering. I didn't like it.
- 27:10Speaker 1: That's a lot of math, right, yeah.
- 27:13Speaker 2: And a lot of just being a loan like engineers
- 27:15Speaker 2: working loan a lot. So I was like, man, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 2: I have some love for that. I have a little
- 27:21Speaker 2: bit of engineering in me. You have a little bit
- 27:22Speaker 2: of lawyer in me. I wanted to be a lawyer at
- 27:24Speaker 2: some point. I didn't go to law or anything or
- 27:26Speaker 2: pre law, but I found a digital media arts and
- 27:30Speaker 2: technology like broadcast media, and I was like, this is it, like,
- 27:34Speaker 2: you know, like learning how to do the camera work
- 27:36Speaker 2: and the editing and the lighting. Because I felt like
- 27:39Speaker 2: I had the talent to be the talent and you
- 27:40Speaker 2: can't teach that. But if I can learn everything else
- 27:43Speaker 2: about the business, I can get my degree in that
- 27:45Speaker 2: and at least put myself close enough to the game
- 27:47Speaker 2: to be able to strike if I ever needed to
- 27:49Speaker 2: be able to do it. So that's what I did.
- 27:53Speaker 2: So I graduated super high up in my class, like
- 27:56Speaker 2: top fifteen, like number twelve. It was a big deal.
- 28:01Speaker 1: From college.
- 28:02Speaker 2: That is a big deal, so used to from my college,
- 28:05Speaker 2: not from the college that year, but from my specific major.
- 28:09Speaker 2: I was one of the top fifteen students. I directed
- 28:12Speaker 2: a movie that got into a film festival. You know.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I did some stuff that I really fell in love
- 28:19Speaker 2: with the business of show business. And then when I graduated,
- 28:24Speaker 2: I started writing commercials. I started actually I was working
- 28:27Speaker 2: in the mail room of an advertising agency, trying to
- 28:31Speaker 2: work my way up to be a writer, and I
- 28:33Speaker 2: finally did it. And then I by that time I
- 28:38Speaker 2: was doing comedy at night.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Oh you were actually going out and trying doing shows.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Because that time, I'm dealing with college.
- 28:46Speaker 1: And what was that experience for you? Like, was your
- 28:50Speaker 1: first time up? Take me to your first time? Did
- 28:52Speaker 1: you do good on your first time? Did you bomb?
- 28:54Speaker 2: I got a standing ovation my first time, and that's
- 28:57Speaker 2: what That's what gave me, like a conference zero on
- 29:00Speaker 2: an addiction to the that was like, ah, you know
- 29:03Speaker 2: what I'm saying, so much so that the very next
- 29:09Speaker 2: show I got, I bombed and it wasn't enough of
- 29:13Speaker 2: a downer to quit to drown out the up. I'm like, nah,
- 29:17Speaker 2: I still feel good and that last one fuck that.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I'll figure it out. But yeah, I hadn't want to
- 29:23Speaker 2: do it my whole life. My mom came and she
- 29:26Speaker 2: saw it was good for her to see it, and
- 29:28Speaker 2: it was it was like, you know, every teacher like
- 29:29Speaker 2: he talks too much, he jokes around too much, so
- 29:32Speaker 2: it was everything. All of that was like it all
- 29:34Speaker 2: came to like a c you know what I'm saying.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I mean, And I'm sure she felt that. When I
- 29:40Speaker 2: graduated college with all of those accolades, he was pretty
- 29:43Speaker 2: like ecstatic then, But this is something different. This is
- 29:46Speaker 2: something like, you know, this is like our shit, Like
- 29:49Speaker 2: my mom has a crazy sense of humor, Like you
- 29:51Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, like this is what we do well.
- 29:54Speaker 1: I mean being a college graduate, how do you break
- 29:57Speaker 1: to your mom that, okay, I graduated from college and
- 30:00Speaker 1: broadcasting right and then, but a side note, I also
- 30:05Speaker 1: I'm interested in doing stand up is a part of
- 30:08Speaker 1: her having conversations with you, like, well, what are you
- 30:10Speaker 1: gonna do for money? Because being in comedy, obviously there's
- 30:14Speaker 1: like a broke phase right.
- 30:15Speaker 2: My grandparents where my granddad was, my aunts, everybody was concerned.
- 30:19Speaker 2: My mom was kind of like, you know, she just
- 30:26Speaker 2: I think she knew once I graduated college, it was
- 30:30Speaker 2: like I did what I could do for them, you
- 30:35Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. It was like, you know, whatever
- 30:37Speaker 2: I do with my life, now, y'all gonna have to
- 30:40Speaker 2: just roll with it. Like I graduated.
- 30:43Speaker 1: College, you did whatever their bars were for them, and
- 30:46Speaker 1: now you get to do what you want from me.
- 30:49Speaker 2: I feel like that was the most responsible way to
- 30:52Speaker 2: be a kid and pay them back for raising me.
- 30:55Speaker 2: It was like, look, I did the thing, Like let
- 30:58Speaker 2: me alone. I did the thing, and everybody can't do
- 31:01Speaker 2: the thing, and everybody doesn't do the thing.
- 31:03Speaker 1: No, a lot of people don't.
- 31:04Speaker 2: And I was the president of my fraternity, but I
- 31:07Speaker 2: gave them a lot to be proud of. But I
- 31:08Speaker 2: needed something for me to be proud of myself, and
- 31:11Speaker 2: you know, I had to. As long as my mom
- 31:13Speaker 2: had my back, I was good. I think if my
- 31:14Speaker 2: mom would have discouraged me, I could have quit. But
- 31:18Speaker 2: my mom was like, you know, you can do it.
- 31:20Speaker 2: My mom saw me get the stand in ovation my
- 31:22Speaker 2: first time. She was there.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Oh, she was there on the first one. I was
- 31:24Speaker 1: going to ask you what she had the first one
- 31:26Speaker 1: or the second one.
- 31:27Speaker 2: She's at both?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Oh, she was at both. So then what was the
- 31:29Speaker 1: conversation going home with her? And the only reason why
- 31:33Speaker 1: I asked so much about your mom and your dad
- 31:35Speaker 1: is because to me, it gives me a real full
- 31:38Speaker 1: picture of who you are. But I'm just curious that
- 31:41Speaker 1: conversation going home? You said it didn't from the second show,
- 31:44Speaker 1: you didn't. It didn't kill it because the first one
- 31:46Speaker 1: you did amazing.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Bo well she was. She asked me, are you sure
- 31:49Speaker 2: this is what you want to do? Like she brought
- 31:53Speaker 2: all my cousins and some of my aunts because I
- 31:55Speaker 2: had killed so hard the first time. She was like,
- 31:57Speaker 2: oh he's got it. Yeah, I gotta see that, you know,
- 32:00Speaker 2: whatever they came. I don't drink, so people brought me drinks.
- 32:05Speaker 2: I have fans. I murdered. Oh wow, like people who
- 32:10Speaker 2: were at the broad Hey, man, oh you back man?
- 32:12Speaker 2: This guy man, he good? What you drinking. I didn't
- 32:16Speaker 2: know what I was drinking. I didn't drink. I'm like,
- 32:18Speaker 2: give me your hinde again. I saw the commercials. I
- 32:20Speaker 2: didn't know, got fucked up off a brew and a half,
- 32:26Speaker 2: went up there and forgot my jokes and I was
- 32:29Speaker 2: just trying to roast people and it just was not funny.
- 32:32Speaker 2: And the guy after there got up there and just
- 32:36Speaker 2: allged me out in front of my family. You know.
- 32:39Speaker 2: And this is back when, like I was, I've always
- 32:43Speaker 2: ever since, ever since I pledged Kappa, my jeans got
- 32:45Speaker 2: a little tighter like I like it to. You know,
- 32:47Speaker 2: I was wearing nice fitted jeans before niggas was doing it.
- 32:52Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. So Seven's and all of that.
- 32:55Speaker 2: I was getting them tailored loud. You know what I'm saying.
- 32:57Speaker 2: I was we was those guys. You know what I'm saying, so,
- 33:01Speaker 2: look at this, Jeeves, he's gay as fun in front
- 33:05Speaker 2: of my family, roasted me. I'm like, oh my god.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So your conversation with your mom going home? She starts
- 33:12Speaker 1: to question, you know, whether this is something you you
- 33:15Speaker 1: want to.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Right then, you know, I went up to her. How
- 33:18Speaker 2: did I do? She's like, not good, not good? What
- 33:21Speaker 2: happened to your jokes? What did you do?
- 33:24Speaker 1: Did she know that you had drank a little bit?
- 33:27Speaker 2: Nah? She just you know, she just you know, she's
- 33:30Speaker 2: always been supportive, but that day.
- 33:32Speaker 1: You know, well, it's but I will say this, it's
- 33:35Speaker 1: so important that she was honest with you in that
- 33:38Speaker 1: moment versus the opposite. So that relationship, I can see
- 33:43Speaker 1: why you trust her guidance because she can keep it
- 33:46Speaker 1: real even when you know it doesn't make you feel
- 33:49Speaker 1: that great.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Yeah, she tells me, I don't like that joke. Shit,
- 33:55Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, you know, with all due respect,
- 33:56Speaker 2: but yeah, she uh, you know, she's always had my
- 34:04Speaker 2: back about it. My dad is just so impressed with it.
- 34:08Speaker 1: It's like, wow, you know, do you feel like by
- 34:12Speaker 1: letting your lights shine and pursuing and following the rules
- 34:16Speaker 1: that they had guided do you feel like that allows
- 34:18Speaker 1: them to let their light shine or other people's light shine.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and it puts a lot of pressure on the
- 34:23Speaker 2: other kids. And here in my family, I'm the oldest,
- 34:26Speaker 2: so it frees them because now their parents can see
- 34:30Speaker 2: that swinging for the fences could possibly get you everything right.
- 34:34Speaker 2: But then also it's like, you know, Chris finished college
- 34:38Speaker 2: and he did all you could.
- 34:40Speaker 1: You know, It's like they'd be like, why did you
- 34:42Speaker 1: leave that bar so high?
- 34:43Speaker 2: Right? You know what I'm saying, Head out to my
- 34:46Speaker 2: you know, my little cousins there. You know, they're geniuses.
- 34:48Speaker 2: They did all that shit, They did their ship and
- 34:50Speaker 2: you know, they got their big dreams and they're doing it.
- 34:53Speaker 2: But I think that I made a sharp left for
- 34:57Speaker 2: my family and they were like, oh wait a minute,
- 34:59Speaker 2: somebody is doing something different, and you know, it's set
- 35:02Speaker 2: it up.
- 35:03Speaker 1: And then also like I've been to Detroit, Uh that
- 35:06Speaker 1: place I describe it. I don't even think you can
- 35:09Speaker 1: describe Detroit. You really have to experience it because when
- 35:12Speaker 1: I go there, I'm like, how does anyone see their
- 35:15Speaker 1: way out? Outside of television? Would be like I could
- 35:17Speaker 1: imagine the only way maybe sports, But but I'm just saying,
- 35:22Speaker 1: like that environment is so there's like it's it's it's
- 35:27Speaker 1: a weird thing to me. It's so unstable because like
- 35:29Speaker 1: one block it's like houses, the next block it's a bomb.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Look like it hit it.
- 35:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 35:34Speaker 1: It's just I mean maybe if I grew up there,
- 35:37Speaker 1: I would understand it more. But coming from bigger cities
- 35:39Speaker 1: like New York and l A, I'm like, yo, how
- 35:42Speaker 1: do you possibly see yourself getting out of Detroit?
- 35:46Speaker 2: It's very simple. You learn and not take anything for granted.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I think that watching my kids grow up here in
- 35:52Speaker 2: LA it's like, oh, they got it made. You know.
- 35:56Speaker 2: They can leave their campus and go to lunch, or
- 35:58Speaker 2: they can go outside and switch class asses. And like
- 36:01Speaker 2: school was different. We were in the in the school building,
- 36:05Speaker 2: you couldn't leave. It was like a like New York.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I've seen New York schools like like a jail, like
- 36:10Speaker 2: a precine. Yeah. Yeah, you know, it's like it's cold,
- 36:15Speaker 2: and you know, we don't have a lot of light
- 36:19Speaker 2: shined on us, and so it's not a lot of
- 36:21Speaker 2: attention on us. So the bad ship can excel, but
- 36:25Speaker 2: the good ship can excel too.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I mean so many successful people that come
- 36:30Speaker 1: out of Detroit. You have your uh, what's that Detroit
- 36:34Speaker 1: a clothing line that's always very prominent. It's like Detroit
- 36:37Speaker 1: over everything or something everybody. By the way, I've tried
- 36:42Speaker 1: to get him on the show, so Tommy, yes, I've tried. Actually,
- 36:46Speaker 1: I think I seen him when I was in Detroit
- 36:48Speaker 1: and I had Darius pull over the car, like yo,
- 36:50Speaker 1: I need to try to lock him in. But but yeah,
- 36:54Speaker 1: you guys have had so many successful young entrepreneurs come
- 36:58Speaker 1: out of Detroit. I feel like Detroit is really making
- 37:02Speaker 1: its own name for itself even.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Can I tell you some real shit. Yeah, we don't
- 37:09Speaker 2: have a lot of old people in a way like
- 37:12Speaker 2: New York. Y'all got a lot of old heads who
- 37:14Speaker 2: are tied into the what it is. And Detroit is open, open,
- 37:20Speaker 2: like our old people are not in the way of
- 37:25Speaker 2: you know, you got a couple of little baby gatekeepers
- 37:28Speaker 2: here and there trying to but it's like no, like
- 37:31Speaker 2: this is Detroit is like young niggas can run this.
- 37:34Speaker 1: It feels like it. It feels like y'all are taking over.
- 37:37Speaker 2: And so if you're doing good, then you are able
- 37:41Speaker 2: to connect with people who want to do business with Detroit.
- 37:43Speaker 2: They they don't have to go through anybody. It's just you.
- 37:46Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, It's just you. They ain't
- 37:47Speaker 2: got a highly ad DJ so and so or get
- 37:51Speaker 2: the hook up through it. No, it's just you. And
- 37:53Speaker 2: you know, ain't no middle man. All that bread is you,
- 37:56Speaker 2: and all that shine is you. You know what I'm saying, Like,
- 37:58Speaker 2: we are raised to be businessman and stand on business
- 38:02Speaker 2: whatever it is, whether it's street business, clothing business. You know,
- 38:06Speaker 2: we show business. We stand on business as at a
- 38:09Speaker 2: at a young age. You know what I'm saying, Like,
- 38:12Speaker 2: you know, you got killers that's fourteen and fifteen years old,
- 38:15Speaker 2: and so it's like, you know that means that you
- 38:17Speaker 2: got people who have peers that are fourteen and fifteen
- 38:21Speaker 2: year old killers. When I was in sixth grade, niggas
- 38:24Speaker 2: was still in cars.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Yeah, well you said, even just hearing you got robbed
- 38:28Speaker 1: a sixth gradeed like, no.
- 38:29Speaker 2: No, I got robbed in eleventh thro eleventh.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Grade at even eleventh grade at gunpoint is.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Walking to school, Yeah, walking to the school. So I
- 38:39Speaker 2: was so excited to wear this jacket. Right. First of all,
- 38:41Speaker 2: let me start out there. I had to beg. My
- 38:42Speaker 2: mom jacket was like three seventy five, which is like
- 38:45Speaker 2: at that time, four thousand dollars.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah to a brew one hundred and seventy five years dollars.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Right, My mom, she wanted me to be you know,
- 38:55Speaker 2: she wanted me to be swaggy, you know what I'm saying.
- 38:57Speaker 2: You know, you know women like a kind of certain dude,
- 39:00Speaker 2: and you know they you have a son, you want
- 39:02Speaker 2: him to But she just couldn't afford a lot, and
- 39:04Speaker 2: I started to know not to ask for a lot,
- 39:06Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. I just I just knew,
- 39:08Speaker 2: like you know, you know, my homeboys told come back
- 39:10Speaker 2: with the new JS, and man, that's cool. Man, you know,
- 39:13Speaker 2: it's just not my time, you know what I'm saying.
- 39:15Speaker 2: You know, I had to be responsible. I was the
- 39:18Speaker 2: man at the house. I was heating up the car
- 39:20Speaker 2: in the morning. I had to move the car sometime
- 39:22Speaker 2: twelve years old and moving the car for her to
- 39:24Speaker 2: go to work. And I was still walk to school.
- 39:26Speaker 2: And so you know, she bought me this jacket. It
- 39:30Speaker 2: was a big deal for her because I was a
- 39:32Speaker 2: responsible kid and she wanted to do something to show
- 39:35Speaker 2: me that, you know what I'm saying, I appreciate it. Yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying.
- 39:38Speaker 1: You know, she's keeping up and exactly.
- 39:41Speaker 2: And I had to Chevrolet when it was black said
- 39:43Speaker 2: Chevrolet on the front. So the dudes they had passed us.
- 39:49Speaker 2: I noticed my h we walking and they kind of
- 39:51Speaker 2: like a half a block up there, pulling to the
- 39:53Speaker 2: like a driveway to block us. So that's weird. They
- 39:59Speaker 2: blocking them. Him go around the car, go around the
- 40:01Speaker 2: car to dude, and the passing the sea gets out,
- 40:03Speaker 2: the car comes around faces me. It was so crazy,
- 40:08Speaker 2: you know what it is. My homeboy just kept walking.
- 40:12Speaker 2: It was almost like he was talking to me. I stopped.
- 40:15Speaker 2: He just kept talking to me like he just kept walking.
- 40:19Speaker 2: I'm sorry. And my man put a put a little
- 40:21Speaker 2: nickel plated a little like a little twenty two twenty five.
- 40:24Speaker 2: It wasn't done crazy. He was a dweb. You know
- 40:26Speaker 2: what I'm saying in my stomach, man, I mean me
- 40:28Speaker 2: blasted asked for his jacket, nigga. I'm like, oh, man,
- 40:32Speaker 2: I was scared. I had had my big Time or
- 40:34Speaker 2: CD in the pocket. I was big on cast money
- 40:38Speaker 2: back then. My big timer CD uh in the pocket,
- 40:41Speaker 2: and I had my house keys in the in the
- 40:43Speaker 2: in the other pocket, and I just remember like taking
- 40:47Speaker 2: my jacket off and shaking it. Some of my house
- 40:49Speaker 2: keys came out on the ground, so how to pick
- 40:51Speaker 2: them up? Because I went to Nigga to have my
- 40:53Speaker 2: keys and you know what I'm saying. And then I
- 40:55Speaker 2: just gave it, Nigga my jacket.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Did you lose the CD?
- 40:58Speaker 2: Of lost the CD? And never got that bad? You know?
- 41:00Speaker 2: Of course I downloaded it later and uh they they
- 41:04Speaker 2: got in the car and dipped and I called back
- 41:06Speaker 2: up to Rob and Nigga, I just got robbed? Is
- 41:08Speaker 2: that for real? Yeah, nigga, you know what I'm saying.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Soup black and White, Rob Robins hilarious shout outs to
- 41:17Speaker 1: Robot Rob.
- 41:19Speaker 2: And so Rob or not.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Being robbed?
- 41:24Speaker 2: Well, I mean, what was he gonna do though, you
- 41:25Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. And then you also learned to
- 41:27Speaker 2: mind your business, right. I could have been selling drugs
- 41:30Speaker 2: and my man wanted to buy something or whatever, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 2: not to pay attention to people's stuff, you know what
- 41:35Speaker 2: I'm saying. So robbing no whole ass. Now I'm gonna
- 41:37Speaker 2: give him the benefit of the doubt and say he
- 41:39Speaker 2: ain't no you know.
- 41:40Speaker 1: And so that was nice how you had his back
- 41:43Speaker 1: just now.
- 41:44Speaker 2: And so I I got to my consulor's office, who
- 41:46Speaker 2: at the time, my conflor was my cousin, because I
- 41:49Speaker 2: remember I told you that that I went to that
- 41:51Speaker 2: school for the gifted and I won class clown in
- 41:54Speaker 2: eighth grade. That school allowed me to get into a
- 41:57Speaker 2: like a gifted high school called cast Tech, like one
- 42:00Speaker 2: of the schools of choice in Detroit. But when I
- 42:03Speaker 2: got in there, I'm fresh off the class clown campaign
- 42:06Speaker 2: and I'm going dumb pulling the fire alarm. I'm dancing.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Oh you're pulling fire alarms. Oh my god, they didn't
- 42:12Speaker 1: invote to class clown.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I had to know. This is in ninth grade, right,
- 42:16Speaker 2: But it's a different school I got. I got kicked
- 42:18Speaker 2: out of that school. So my mom was very hurt.
- 42:22Speaker 2: And so that's another thing. You buy me this jacket, man,
- 42:24Speaker 2: that you forgive me for getting kicked out of that
- 42:25Speaker 2: school and embarrassing the family. You know, it's a big
- 42:28Speaker 2: deal to go to that school and everybody telling everybody,
- 42:30Speaker 2: you know, you know Chris up in cash now, Yeah,
- 42:33Speaker 2: we just trying to keep his grades. I was in
- 42:36Speaker 2: that bitch I had sixty five absences. I was like,
- 42:39Speaker 2: I was leaving class, going to different seniors. So the
- 42:42Speaker 2: seniors be like, come on, that's the guy that can
- 42:43Speaker 2: roast real good. Pull me into the lunch. I'm roasting
- 42:46Speaker 2: in lunch. I didn't realize I'm doing it every day
- 42:49Speaker 2: for months, right, and so kicked out. I had to
- 42:55Speaker 2: go to this hood school since why I got ribbed
- 42:57Speaker 2: at the hood school, and so you know, it's just
- 43:00Speaker 2: I have to beg my mom to you know, I'm
- 43:03Speaker 2: gonna be safe. And then I wasn't safe, and so
- 43:05Speaker 2: I had to go to my concert's office and call
- 43:07Speaker 2: my mom and tell her she was hysterical, which that
- 43:10Speaker 2: kind of made me sad, like because I how mad
- 43:14Speaker 2: and sad she was, and to feel like she felt helpless,
- 43:18Speaker 2: like dang, somebody could have shot you for some shit
- 43:20Speaker 2: I bought you and I know better, and I didn't
- 43:23Speaker 2: trust my judgment and I let you think you know everything.
- 43:26Speaker 2: People are killing people for these clothes. I'm like, fuck,
- 43:29Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So and then you know,
- 43:31Speaker 2: it's just I just remember, like, right, man, I'm gonna
- 43:37Speaker 2: start buying my own shit, like I don't want her
- 43:39Speaker 2: to be, you know, like, once I felt it, I'm
- 43:41Speaker 2: all right, cool, I don't need to be asking my
- 43:43Speaker 2: mom for shit. I'm sixteen, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 43:46Speaker 2: I got a job. I got I started working that Victoria's.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Secret as your first sixteen year old.
- 43:53Speaker 2: No, no, no, my first sixteen hundred was a target.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Okay, but how'd you end?
- 43:58Speaker 2: Me and my boy Marcus, We went to the mall
- 44:01Speaker 2: and so we just like, you know, let's feel like
- 44:03Speaker 2: some applications and shit. And so we feel in our
- 44:06Speaker 2: applications and uh, we go off in victorious because this
- 44:09Speaker 2: is a young girl and at the desk, so we're
- 44:11Speaker 2: going to like, what up, what's up with you? We
- 44:13Speaker 2: flirting heavy widders. He's like, y'all stupid. What I'm like,
- 44:17Speaker 2: We're trying to we feel like, you know, She's like,
- 44:19Speaker 2: we get out of here. I'm trying to get a job,
- 44:37Speaker 2: just saying it. Oh yeah, she gave with both applications,
- 44:39Speaker 2: y'all fell out applications then, and then so we had
- 44:42Speaker 2: to interview, like a couple of days later we went
- 44:46Speaker 2: and so Marcus went to the interview too, and I
- 44:48Speaker 2: guess he couldn't believe it because He's like, Nigga, I'm
- 44:50Speaker 2: not being to work here for real now I've been
- 44:52Speaker 2: working this bit.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say, it's actually pretty smart for
- 44:54Speaker 1: a guy. I never even thought of that.
- 44:56Speaker 2: I was all I did was stock the lotions. So
- 44:59Speaker 2: that would be in a bad listen to the radio
- 45:00Speaker 2: and they'd be like, we need pairless pair and uh
- 45:04Speaker 2: strawberry yogurt cream and I run out with just litt
- 45:08Speaker 2: the lotion or that you know, we're getting low. I
- 45:10Speaker 2: was season those over the holiday break, so I would
- 45:12Speaker 2: stock the shelves, and you know, I just I started
- 45:17Speaker 2: dressing a little like I had my little Gucci loafers
- 45:20Speaker 2: and you know what I'm saying, Like I was the plug,
- 45:22Speaker 2: Like you know, I had the little hookup. I had
- 45:24Speaker 2: a little discount. You know what I'm saying. I saw
- 45:27Speaker 2: some shit in there that I was like, oh my god,
- 45:29Speaker 2: my eyes. You know what I'm saying, you know, the
- 45:31Speaker 2: old lady titties and shit, and you know what I'm
- 45:33Speaker 2: saying it just like you know, I saw girls in
- 45:36Speaker 2: there getting fitted for their first brawl, like girls I knew,
- 45:40Speaker 2: like we the same age. I'm like, oh shit, she
- 45:41Speaker 2: getting them titties fitted you know what I'm saying. I
- 45:45Speaker 2: saw like pooring stars and strippers coming in there getting
- 45:47Speaker 2: stuff that they would order from the catalog, and then
- 45:49Speaker 2: we get sent to the store, you know what I'm saying.
- 45:51Speaker 2: So they be in a back trying it on, and
- 45:53Speaker 2: that shit be looking like God, dangn I'm a little
- 45:56Speaker 2: young nigga. You know what I'm saying, Like, oh shit,
- 45:59Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. You know, it was a
- 46:03Speaker 2: cool job, man. I would bring stuff with my aunties
- 46:06Speaker 2: and my mom for Christmas, you know what I'm saying,
- 46:08Speaker 2: the little sets and stuff for like the perfume. I
- 46:11Speaker 2: worked there for like six seven months.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Hilarious. Let's fast forward back to you deciding to move
- 46:19Speaker 1: forward with your comedy career. How long did it take
- 46:22Speaker 1: for you to start actually materializing it into like a
- 46:26Speaker 1: career that could fund your life.
- 46:30Speaker 2: So I was coming to work late every day because
- 46:34Speaker 2: I was out late at night at the clubs, and
- 46:38Speaker 2: I had been doing some big shows around the city,
- 46:40Speaker 2: and my reputation was just getting out and I was
- 46:42Speaker 2: really smart, and so that comedy was coming across. It
- 46:45Speaker 2: was just I was a young, fresh comic, you know,
- 46:48Speaker 2: and so.
- 46:49Speaker 1: And you were staying in Detroit doing clubs. Not you
- 46:52Speaker 1: didn't leave yet, right, I was in Detroit.
- 46:53Speaker 2: I had never left. I had never been.
- 46:55Speaker 1: You never went to New York or anything to test down?
- 46:57Speaker 2: Okay no. And so I just remember, uh like coming
- 47:07Speaker 2: to work one day and I had just sold this
- 47:09Speaker 2: commercial for Walmart and it was like a big time
- 47:13Speaker 2: Christmas commercial and everybody was excited about it. So you
- 47:16Speaker 2: know my boss who now his name was the Tabio Samuels.
- 47:20Speaker 2: He now runs Oh I know him.
- 47:23Speaker 1: He was on our show.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah, he's the CEO of the Vault. But the Tabio
- 47:27Speaker 2: was my boss back then. Oh you were at the Global.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, he told us about that agency.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Okay, so a lot of stars came out of the
- 47:37Speaker 2: agency too. Just they were really good at finding young,
- 47:40Speaker 2: uncultivated talent and they just grew us. So the Tabio
- 47:44Speaker 2: told me, like, look, we lost Scope. You know, the
- 47:48Speaker 2: recession was hitting in hard. It's like, oh a oh nine,
- 47:51Speaker 2: we lost Scope from Walmart. They don't need our team
- 47:53Speaker 2: to be this big. We need to let somebody go.
- 47:56Speaker 2: It's not you, because you're killing it, but we also
- 47:59Speaker 2: know that you don't do one be here and you
- 48:00Speaker 2: starting to blow up in your comedy thing or whatever.
- 48:04Speaker 2: You can save somebody else's job. Right. It was a
- 48:07Speaker 2: girl on my team who just got married, you know.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Other people was you know, had kids and shit, and
- 48:12Speaker 2: I'm like, shit, i can get out of here, and
- 48:14Speaker 2: they're gonna give me a nice severance package and then
- 48:16Speaker 2: they're gonna let me get full unemployment. So for like
- 48:19Speaker 2: two and a half years, you know, I walked out
- 48:22Speaker 2: of the area with a nice goodbye package. Plus I
- 48:25Speaker 2: was getting paid like eight hundred bucks every two weeks.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I just started blowing up, traveling to colleges and I
- 48:32Speaker 2: would open up for like Willis Kleefood here, and I
- 48:35Speaker 2: just started I started like making a name for myself. Wow.
- 48:40Speaker 1: So that two and a half years brought you time
- 48:42Speaker 1: to just focus, just focus on that. By the time
- 48:44Speaker 1: the two and a half years were up, with dedicated focus,
- 48:48Speaker 1: it was enough to support yourself.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yeah, by the time I'm gonna tell you like this,
- 48:52Speaker 2: So the two and a half years, by the time
- 48:53Speaker 2: the two and a half years come up, now I'm
- 48:55Speaker 2: a new dad. Right. The last day that I got
- 48:59Speaker 2: my last check, my viral videos shit Detroit Niggas say
- 49:03Speaker 2: went viral and from that day forward, comedy been paying
- 49:07Speaker 2: all my bills.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Wow.
- 49:08Speaker 2: From that day forward, it was like Valentine's Day twenty twelve.
- 49:12Speaker 2: From that day forward, it was like I went viral
- 49:17Speaker 2: on world Star and YouTube and back then I was
- 49:20Speaker 2: a big, super huge deal.
- 49:22Speaker 1: And then were you receiving checks from those videos or
- 49:26Speaker 1: were you.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Just yeah, I was getting tests from those videos and
- 49:29Speaker 2: I was just getting booked. But then also, you know,
- 49:32Speaker 2: I wasn't a one trick pony, so I started doing
- 49:34Speaker 2: a puppeteering around that time. So I came out with
- 49:36Speaker 2: Reggie Bow, and Reggie Bow was a puppet that was
- 49:39Speaker 2: representing regular Weed at the time, and so it was
- 49:42Speaker 2: just something else to go viral on besides the shit
- 49:45Speaker 2: Detroit nigga say. And then it became like, oh, this
- 49:47Speaker 2: guy has stuff. And then producers from Hollywood started calling me,
- 49:52Speaker 2: and that's when I started selling TV shows wow.
- 49:57Speaker 1: As and then you're so as a producer slash.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Or yes, wowah producer slash writer. And then of course
- 50:04Speaker 2: I would act on them if they you know, I
- 50:06Speaker 2: shot a couple of pilots and you know, they would
- 50:09Speaker 2: go or they wouldn't go. You know what I'm saying.
- 50:11Speaker 2: It depends, Uh, nothing really went, because even when it
- 50:14Speaker 2: did go, it would get canceled. It's just how the
- 50:16Speaker 2: game goes. But that money was enough to you know,
- 50:20Speaker 2: you get into this producing game and you're selling shows.
- 50:24Speaker 2: First of all, you got to have thick skin, and
- 50:26Speaker 2: you got to have more than one idea because if
- 50:27Speaker 2: your idea doesn't go, you dead in the water. Right, So,
- 50:31Speaker 2: you know, I learned how to have thick skin. I
- 50:33Speaker 2: learned how to maneuver this IP. I use IP like
- 50:36Speaker 2: real estate. You know, some shows I'm gonna fix up
- 50:39Speaker 2: and I'm gonna want to live in. It's gonna be
- 50:41Speaker 2: want to be my show. Other shows you just sell
- 50:43Speaker 2: it and then somebody else's in, you know, and it's
- 50:46Speaker 2: just like that's where I built up my family is
- 50:51Speaker 2: that's what we sustain off of. You know what I'm
- 50:54Speaker 2: saying was that it was the shows. Right. Well, now
- 50:57Speaker 2: I understand.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Now you during those twenty a half years you start
- 51:03Speaker 1: to get out of Detroit. It sounds like, right, what
- 51:05Speaker 1: was that pivotal moment where well, I guess when you left,
- 51:09Speaker 1: you knew that there was no turning back, right.
- 51:14Speaker 2: No, So, like what happened was, you know, during that
- 51:19Speaker 2: two years I started really getting my name hot in Detroit,
- 51:24Speaker 2: and then I started doing the viral video and I
- 51:27Speaker 2: did that one viral video. At the end of that
- 51:28Speaker 2: two years after that, I was really hot in Detroit.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Now I'm famous in Detroit. Right now I'm starting to
- 51:35Speaker 2: do the radio. So now I became a radio personality first.
- 51:39Speaker 2: So that's what got me to all the celebrities and
- 51:41Speaker 2: everybody would come through the city. I would be able
- 51:43Speaker 2: to have a one on one with them on the air.
- 51:46Speaker 2: And then my good friend Tone Foster, he I asked him, like, Yo,
- 51:56Speaker 2: give me your ride to Chicago. Bro, I didn't have
- 51:58Speaker 2: a car. They give me right of Chicago. Man. They
- 52:00Speaker 2: got this auditions for this show called Empire, and they
- 52:03Speaker 2: sent me down there for auditions. My boy drove me
- 52:06Speaker 2: down there, did the audition, and I got the role,
- 52:10Speaker 2: and I had to move to Chicago, so I had
- 52:12Speaker 2: to leave the radio station. So now I'm living in
- 52:14Speaker 2: Chicago shoot an Empire, and I'm going up in the
- 52:17Speaker 2: Chicago comedy scene. And now I'm blowing up in that scene.
- 52:21Speaker 2: And it's like, oh shit, like I'm good in two states,
- 52:25Speaker 2: Like I'm good in Yeah, I'm good in Illinois. So
- 52:29Speaker 2: now it's like well, in the middle of that, you know,
- 52:33Speaker 2: producers are still reaching out to me. I ended up
- 52:35Speaker 2: selling the show.
- 52:37Speaker 1: How do you get on the radar where they're saying
- 52:39Speaker 1: and you're able to sell shows because you booked a
- 52:42Speaker 1: role as an actor? But where do you Where does
- 52:44Speaker 1: the pivot come in where you get the opportunity to
- 52:46Speaker 1: sell a show.
- 52:47Speaker 2: So it's a crazy bunch of ways to do it.
- 52:50Speaker 2: But back then, there wasn't a huge amount of online
- 52:53Speaker 2: YouTube creators, right, and so the ones that were out
- 52:58Speaker 2: there had had a spotlight on them because you know,
- 53:01Speaker 2: they were trying to show the the power of this
- 53:06Speaker 2: new medium, like you can go to YouTube and you
- 53:08Speaker 2: can So they were scouring YouTube for these guys, and
- 53:11Speaker 2: so I just was one of those guys who was
- 53:12Speaker 2: you know, they liked my mix of I'm doing the
- 53:16Speaker 2: you know, the skid that I'm doing another skit, you know,
- 53:18Speaker 2: me and my boy Ron Taylor doing the skit that
- 53:20Speaker 2: I'm doing a skit with Darius and Jeff Horse and
- 53:24Speaker 2: all these guys. And then I did Reggie bo and
- 53:31Speaker 2: then that had them like, wait, he has a puppet,
- 53:34Speaker 2: And so I started getting calls and so one guy
- 53:37Speaker 2: called me and was like man, I you know, I
- 53:38Speaker 2: could take you to Martin Orence. Man, I could have
- 53:41Speaker 2: you a part of the crew, and I'm all right.
- 53:43Speaker 2: The other dude me was like, I can show you
- 53:46Speaker 2: how to produce and own your own content with networks,
- 53:49Speaker 2: and I'm like, shit, I'm rolling with that. And so
- 53:52Speaker 2: that's what he did. Shout out to him. His dude
- 53:54Speaker 2: name was Chip, and he taught me how to write.
- 53:58Speaker 2: And you know, he was a producer on I Can't
- 54:00Speaker 2: Get a Hill back in the day. So he knew
- 54:02Speaker 2: people and so, you know, I like any business, you
- 54:07Speaker 2: get to network, right, and so you build tryads, which
- 54:11Speaker 2: is like somebody introduces you to a person, and so
- 54:17Speaker 2: the three of y'all have a connection through the person
- 54:19Speaker 2: who introduced you. And so Chip would introduced me around
- 54:22Speaker 2: town of these people and then I started like having
- 54:26Speaker 2: stuff to bring them, like I got this idea and
- 54:29Speaker 2: then that's dope. And then we would work and start
- 54:31Speaker 2: building the ideas and he would get the meeting set.
- 54:34Speaker 2: And I'm really good at pitching because I just was
- 54:37Speaker 2: selling commercials and so it's crazy how your whole story
- 54:44Speaker 2: lends itself to the next chapter. I was writing and
- 54:46Speaker 2: selling commercials and I had to pitch thirty seconds to somebody, you.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Would do it like how when you watch it on
- 54:52Speaker 1: TV and the person stands in front of the room
- 54:53Speaker 1: and that was you.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Well yeah, well, I mean, I'm just trying to visit me.
- 54:56Speaker 2: It'd be on like a video call with like our
- 54:59Speaker 2: clients that are somewhere else, and I'm running down the
- 55:01Speaker 2: schematic and it's gonna be like this, and then the
- 55:03Speaker 2: little girl says that's just fad mark, and everybody like,
- 55:06Speaker 2: oh right, And so pitching thirty seconds is hard as hell,
- 55:13Speaker 2: way harder than pitching thirty minutes. So now I'm getting
- 55:16Speaker 2: these rooms and I'm like and then page two and
- 55:20Speaker 2: they're like okay, and it's like I'm learning that, like
- 55:24Speaker 2: everything I learned in that process before, I'm using it
- 55:27Speaker 2: here and it's killing.
- 55:29Speaker 1: It's like God had like a whole plan, People.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Had a plan for me. And what happens is then
- 55:35Speaker 2: you look up and a lot of people who are
- 55:37Speaker 2: just new into the game don't have these kind of
- 55:40Speaker 2: pitching skills, and then a lot of people who've been
- 55:42Speaker 2: in the game don't have fresh ideas. So now here
- 55:46Speaker 2: I am a person with fresh ideas and a way
- 55:49Speaker 2: to pitch where I can really do it, and I'm
- 55:52Speaker 2: just selling show after show. Like I looked up and
- 55:55Speaker 2: I sold like eleven shows, and I'm like, oh shit,
- 55:59Speaker 2: like I just keep I just sold one like two
- 56:02Speaker 2: weeks ago, you know what I'm saying. Like, I'm just
- 56:04Speaker 2: saying like right, but that's what I do. And so, like,
- 56:07Speaker 2: you know, it became like I'm getting more popular for
- 56:10Speaker 2: this than the stand up. People are respecting me for me,
- 56:13Speaker 2: and I had to Now I'm living in hollywoods I
- 56:15Speaker 2: live in Detroite, Chicago. Now I'm in Hollywood. And I
- 56:19Speaker 2: started doing comedy in Hollywood, and then I'm blowing up.
- 56:23Speaker 2: And that was like, now we got three states where
- 56:27Speaker 2: I'm good, and so, you know, blowing up in Hollywood,
- 56:31Speaker 2: you know. And then I've even done it in New York.
- 56:34Speaker 2: I lived in New York for seven months, blew up
- 56:36Speaker 2: in New York, and I did it in Atlanta. I
- 56:38Speaker 2: went to Atlanta for a couple of months, blew up
- 56:40Speaker 2: in the little Atlanta comedy scene. That was it. So
- 56:42Speaker 2: then it just became like I'm good and I just
- 56:45Speaker 2: need to just be like I'm good, you know what
- 56:46Speaker 2: I'm saying. And so the fight was to make sure
- 56:49Speaker 2: that I could still do my stand up in the
- 56:51Speaker 2: midst of doing all of this producing that I've been doing.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Yeah, how do you do that?
- 56:57Speaker 2: I just be tired, you know what I'm saying.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Like, if you had to choose now between producing, writing,
- 57:05Speaker 1: and your comedy out of all them, which is the
- 57:08Speaker 1: job that gives you the most.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Fulfillment stand up because that's personal, right, acting because of
- 57:16Speaker 2: what I can do from my family. Like when I act,
- 57:19Speaker 2: you know, it's like it's that's like the big, big,
- 57:22Speaker 2: big money. You know what I'm saying.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Oh, I would think selling the shows was the biggest money.
- 57:25Speaker 2: I'm selling the shows is the second biggest money. Acting
- 57:28Speaker 2: is the first. Okay, yeah, Like because you just you know,
- 57:31Speaker 2: like I'm talking about real acting, like not like guest starring.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Like like I started on like Love Life, where I
- 57:37Speaker 2: did ten episodes and it's HBO, and it's like you're
- 57:40Speaker 2: number four on the call sheet, Like you're like, you know,
- 57:44Speaker 2: top five priority for this HBO show. Like it's life
- 57:47Speaker 2: changing kind of money. Producing is like you finally getting
- 57:51Speaker 2: six figures. You know what I'm saying, It's okay, we're
- 57:53Speaker 2: doing it. And then you produce a lot you know,
- 57:55Speaker 2: you can add it up. But acting is like bam,
- 57:57Speaker 2: you're here. You know what I'm saying. So what I
- 58:00Speaker 2: a like to do is do stand up and have
- 58:02Speaker 2: them pay me like I'm acting.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Okay, well I think that that can't be too far
- 58:06Speaker 1: around the corner for you.
- 58:07Speaker 2: I don't think so, but I have to you know,
- 58:09Speaker 2: you got to have know what's around the corner. You
- 58:11Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. But I mean the production part
- 58:15Speaker 2: of it. It's just as a creative it's a little slow.
- 58:21Speaker 2: I'll be like, you know, shows take two years to
- 58:23Speaker 2: come out, and I'm like, I'm ready for to come out,
- 58:26Speaker 2: and I'm getting older.
- 58:27Speaker 1: And you know, well, when they buy the show, why
- 58:29Speaker 1: are you still waiting for it to come out? But
- 58:32Speaker 1: is it not just a smooth one done, shake hand
- 58:35Speaker 1: transaction or they keep you on as a writer.
- 58:38Speaker 2: So they buy the show. When you sell a show,
- 58:40Speaker 2: you sell a concept, they want to buy that, right, Okay,
- 58:43Speaker 2: so oh we like that, we want that. Okay, cool,
- 58:46Speaker 2: we'll give you. Let's say, we'll give you two hundred
- 58:48Speaker 2: grand to do that. Okay, we need the script rope,
- 58:51Speaker 2: we need the Bible designed, we need to you know,
- 58:54Speaker 2: the concept and all of that outlines everything, and then
- 58:59Speaker 2: we'll side if we want to do this show.
- 59:03Speaker 1: After they've given you two hundred k. Yeah, okay.
- 59:06Speaker 2: So it's like that's why you got to have thick skin,
- 59:08Speaker 2: because you can't be glued to it because once they
- 59:10Speaker 2: say no, we're good, it's over.
- 59:12Speaker 1: What do you mean it's over?
- 59:13Speaker 2: It's over like they bought that from you.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Oh oh, meaning like it's it gets dead in the ground.
- 59:19Speaker 2: And then you can go to somebody else and say, hey,
- 59:22Speaker 2: if you guys like it, you guys can pay them
- 59:24Speaker 2: two hundred grand and they'll sell it to you and
- 59:27Speaker 2: then you can work with me on it. Why you
- 59:29Speaker 2: have to get it and turn around? But they like,
- 59:31Speaker 2: we bought this and we paid for it. Yes, so
- 59:33Speaker 2: it's ours, but we don't want.
- 59:34Speaker 1: It, damn. So But when you had mentioned that, you
- 59:39Speaker 1: sometimes you'll be waiting around, like when is it going
- 59:41Speaker 1: to drop? Why do you have that part? Like why
- 59:44Speaker 1: what are you waiting for? If you've gotten paid.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Waiting to get green lid, right, you're waiting for it to.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Start, Like why do you get another check? Once it starts?
- 59:53Speaker 2: That's when you start that two hundred thousand You get
- 59:56Speaker 2: that now every episode. Oh so they pay you one
- 59:59Speaker 2: time for this is what you get. Now you're like,
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: I want this ten times. Hell yeah, you know what
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I'm saying. I wanted twenty times. I want it for
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: you exactly. You know what I'm saying. So that's what happens.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: So now it's like you get a taste and then
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: it's gone. And so for some people that's it. Yeah,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: they never do that again, right, they help you budgeted it.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: Good for me, it's like I need to do it
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: over and over and over again. This show is about
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: this and so the thing is like a lot of
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: people don't have enough good shit to go right back
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: to them and be all right, but check this one out.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: This one starts a little boy and you know, and
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: they like, nah, you had one and it was good
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: and that's it me. When they see me coming, they're like, oh,
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: what do you got for a CP? You know what
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: I'm saying. And it's like and it bodes well for
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: me because just because it didn't go doesn't mean that
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: they don't respect your writing or respect how you think.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: So then they'll call me like, hey, these other people
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: they sold the show, but they need help with their pitch.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Or they need help with their can you you know,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: we'll pay you to come in and help them, and
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: then there's money in that too.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Now I'm just curious. With everything you've learned about the
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: entertainment business in the his and those, do you feel
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: like you are good with managing money or do you
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: kind of still.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Look at I don't like, I don't think. I'm just
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I think that I talked to my mom about this
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: the other day, and it's like she was like, I
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: didn't raise you to be good with money. And we
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: have to figure out how to break that curse in
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: our family of money just coming through us. You know
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: what I'm saying. We need to figure out how to
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: build our generational wealthware. And we're doing things like we
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: invested in some French bulldogs and now you got puppies
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: and so you know, that's like one of our investments
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: that we did together that we're seeing come back and
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: dividends because it's like, wow, like this is how it goes.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: You know, you have to invest your money. You can't
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: just buy everything you like. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Because there was a point where I'm like, well, I'll
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: sell another show and then I'll sell another show, and
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: then I just sell another show. Oh we need that,
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: sell another show. But then the problem is then we
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: have a strike. Yeah, and the strike is like.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: The strike is taken forever by the way.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: So now it's like, oh shit, like I can't sell
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: another show.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: But even during the pandemic, were you coasting fine?
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Yeah, during the pandemic, I was able to, like I
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: still have my puppeteer fan base, so like they still
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: like Reggie bo has a whole following and merch and
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: all of that. But then also I just I just
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: really got into my creative bag. Like a lot of
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: my friends who do comedy and people who are just
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: in the business, they need the industry. All I need
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: is is my own setup because I have my degree
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: in so I'm setting up my own I have my
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: own studio, you know.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you have your background. Is it's almost like your
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: I definitely say I'll call it God's plan more than anything,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: because everything that every milestone you hit, even by holding
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: true to what your family wanted, that level of integrity
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: kind of blessed you indefinitely.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Because I mean, like the skills that I got
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: from college, the network, Like I said, I was a Kappa,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: so like you know, now I mean I am a
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: new So now I got all that network plus the
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: stuff that I really learned, and it's one of the
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: best colleges in the world. So now it's like I
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: have that vast network of professors who are proud of me,
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: and I got this person who wants to do this
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: for you, and it's just like, yeah, everything works and over.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: During the pandemic, I just woke up one day and
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: it was like, get to work. I got on Amazon,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: ordered the whole studio. It was like eight hundred bucks.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Did some cheap like they were looking like those but
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: they were cheap, you know what I'm saying, A couple
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: of cameras that already had some try pods. I got
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: a backdrop blue screen. I ordered a table and a
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: chair and I just set it up and I was like, Hey,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: it's me and I'm here and I don't know what
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: I'm doing here, but this is what I was told
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: to do. And now it just wow. And you know
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Like, so.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: So would you say, I mean, based on this conversation,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and have you cracked the budget nutshell or like how
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: to master your finances.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Yet yes, I have. I just you know, like it's
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: a lot of work to undo years of being in debt,
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, like paying off stuff, you know,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: just like I'm the lighters at the end of the tunnel,
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like, you know, the lighters
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: at the end. You have kids, and it's just like daw,
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: they just bleed money, you know what I'm saying, Like
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: you know, and it's just yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: No, I get it.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: I I I got better with money after I think
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: I was like twenty three and I got liens on
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: all my stuff from the State of California.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: And that's when I was like taxes and I was like,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: let me get one on one winning account. And then
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: like really kind of asked all these questions and I
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: started to like really sit down, like you know, usually
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: you're handing your taxes to account you just five minutes,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: get in and get out. Now me, I was like, no,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: we're gonna teach me what I was doing wrong to
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: end up in a situation where you know, the state
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: is gonna repoll my car. How was the State of
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: California gonna repossess my car like that? Doesn't even make sense.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: But the State of California, I had to learn at
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: a very young age, was way more dangerous than the irs.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: The irs will like make payment plans, but State was like,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: you pay me all my money up front, and we don't.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: We don't want five dollars today. We want all our money.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: And then when we get all our money, we remove
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: all the lians. And that's when I was like, Okay,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you know, I'm a I'm a school up and handle
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: my money differently. And then when I bought my first house,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: that was another learning lesson where it was like, wait,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: the bank wants to know why I was moving money
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: from this account to this account and what was this
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: purchase and that purchase. Because when I every time I
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: had a business, I would mix up all my funds.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh, well, you know, CASHUW problems, and
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: before you know it, after hitting my head a couple
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: of times. Now I may true j not just by nationality,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: but I am an obsessively and Darius knows that's like,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: I'm so good with money and I still I give
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: out credit. I brag about it because I do believe
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: you have really great credit. Your job in life is
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: to gift other people with it, but also teach them.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: But I give away and.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: I don't mind.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: So when you have someone like I have an eight
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: hundred and fifty eight FIGHTO, and I'm proud of it.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: But if say, if you have say seven six hundred
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: fight oh, all I would do is say, you know, CP,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: give me your information. I'll add you to one of
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: my cards. By me doing that, I'll probably give you
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: one hundred points just off that.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: So I give out all my friends. I give them credit.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I'm very invested in there, and they all call me
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: when they're having money issues, cause I'm like, yo, there's
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: no reason to be prideful about it. Like you see
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: me go broke a hundred of times. But it was funny.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Yesterday I bought a car.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: That's business.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but I bought a car yesterday, and afterwards I went,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: you know, I had to run an errand with my daughter.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: I was talking to a friend and I was like, man,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: you know the guy before me, it took so long
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: for me. It took like thirty minutes. And he was saying, like,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: you know, when he buys all his vehicles, one he
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: put it under his name. I'm like, why the f
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: would you ever put a vehicle under your name? It's
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: a liability. It ruins your debt to income racio on
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: at all this list, but one of the things I
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: realized is like the failure to manage money and to
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: understand credit really holds you back. The reason why I
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: was able to buy a car with virtually nothing down,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: no income checks, nothing, was because I had the fight
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: out score of f you give me my car, you
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: know attitude and even when I said, uh.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: But doesn't your score go down every time you do
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: stuff like that.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: No, so your score you have like up to four
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: inquiries a year that you can get, but it dips
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: your score a little bit. The things that ruin your
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: score is really your debt to income ratio and your
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: ability to pay off debt. So I believe in paying
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: off all debt within thirty days, and the only debt
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: that I like to keep is assets. And then anything
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: that's a liability needs to go under a company because
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: you can write it all off. You know, like cars
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: with the exception of Darius's new Chevy Caprice or whatever,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: like you could keep that car because it's appreciating, But
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: the regular cars that depreciate. They need to be under
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: your company. Everything needs to be under your company. You
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: got school and then yeah, and then I also I
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: live on a modest salary, and then I put all
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: my companies as anes corp. And then I draw to
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: a draw on the profits at the end, which I
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: think everyone swears by LLC, LLC law escorpse are the best.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Like I remember my accounts for five years saying like
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: escorp escort, but in my brain I was so ashamed.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I would be like, well, they probably just wanted me
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: to spend more money. And it was a simple filing.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: It didn't even cost me any money. It was they
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: just turned the C into the S. And I was like,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I saved so much money. I was like, you're so stupid.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Ho, why didn't you just tell them to do it?
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: But my ignorance was like was like, yeah, escorp es
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: corp is the best way. And then I also I
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: love this because if you're buying real estate, if you
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: do an escorp and you set yourself as an employee
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: if you're self employed, they count your income after tax
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: if you are employed, which if you get on a
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: d P under your escorp, you're employed, then you get
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: the best of both worlds. You get to buy a
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: home based on your income before tax, so you can
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: buy more home. So like there's different tricks where you're like,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: wait and as an as corp. You can do both.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: So I love it.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm gonna bet suhit me up.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: I love it in Darius, obviously, could you imagine being
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: married to someone that's like, how did you spend that money?
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: From Detroit? We from theded Like we just we just
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: get a dollar to spend a dollar.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: That's how he is. And let me tell you something. Nothing.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: The second I hear been a mall, I'm like, get
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: the out of the mall, you know, And I get it.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: He's he's a comic. But I'm like, if your checks
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: were all getting written into your corp, you know, sure,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: But these clothes I can't. We can't do nothing with
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: them because you're not Your paperwork isn't brand.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: What do you mean? So if they were paying him
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: to his company, then the clothes that he buys, he
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: get everything.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: So everything I buy is written off. I what I
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: do is I put everything on my Amax. Which is
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: a cool cheat is that most of these credit cards
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: are breaking. Get down for you. So at the end
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: of the year, you just get your AMX spreadsheet because
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: they do it for you, turn it into your account,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: and then just write off everything on there because it
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: breaks it down versus you having to keep tabs on it.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Look this this whole podcast financial lesson. But but no,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I would love to collabse. I love sharp, I love
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: talking about budgeting and financial literacy, and I get every
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: time I drop a little snippet on my personal page,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: I'll get dams from everybody like please drop more, and
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: I'm like, I will go. But yeah, it's definitely especially
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: like in the state of California, if you are self employed,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: like to just Comedian CP, you're gonna get taxed more.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: But you're on an escort, so you're being taxed right,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: But the goal is the liabilities go on to court
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: assets home.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Are you stuck, Like, let's say my car is are
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: my name? Can I just switch into my company at anytime?
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: No, but there's still a way. So like what I
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: was doing, not like.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: A car note like talk about a car you just
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: cash out.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: You cashed out a car in your own name. Maybe no,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: you got to buy that because if you buy a
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: car cash out fifty percent right off the top is
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: tax right off. So if you bought a car for
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: one hundred k, fifty k.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Right off the top for my company, or it's for me,
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: for your.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Company, for you, it's I don't think you get as
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: many benefits. Like I just bought this car. I just
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: switched it to my name, and the dealer had the
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: nerve to catch a little attitude and I was just like, bru,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: either you switch it to my name. And then here's
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: the funny thing. So the way insurance works, you know,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: it's a little tricky. So I was telling Darius at
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: like seven in this morning, guess what I did. So
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: the insurance company, the dealer wanted like the insurance to
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: come out a certain way, and they sent me a PDF.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: And luckily, you know the computers now you could just
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: edit it. And they wanted to lay out a certain way.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: So I had the insurance, but they just wanted it
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: to lay out without my name or Dariu's name on it.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: So I just went and edited the PDF and sent
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: it to the dealer and got it approved. I was like,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I'm gangster like you. There's probably was like, what are
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: you even talking about?
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Exactly. That's that's how I get down. I would. I mean,
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: but like, yeah, yeah, I mean.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: The insurance is legit, but they want to see it
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: laid out a certain way. It's like, Yo, I'm not
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: even gonna argue with you. I'm not gonna argue with
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the insurance company. Y'all can agree, y'all don't want to
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: talk to each other. I'm gonna edit this. What do
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: you want? You want? My name's gone edit and send
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: it in. And but but truthfully, a lot of people
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: don't spend enough time talking about money and how it works.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: And in the state of California, we're being taxed so
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: hard that you have to be smart with it.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Man, I gotta get you with my wife. Man, she
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: would love this conversation.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: She would until you go to the mall and then you'd.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Be like, oh, I mean you could. I spend too
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: much good damn time with tomorrow. Anyway, that's my problem.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: I need to get out of there. Yeah.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: So, what advice would you give to someone coming up
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: in the game specifically from Detroit And matter of fact, no,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: we're not gonna specific from Detroit, but a young person
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: coming up in the game pursuing to be a class
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: clown but doesn't really know what their journey is gonna
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: be and being.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: Broke so young is in there in high school?
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Yeah, a young person.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: I mean, if you're in high school, I would say
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: I was, you.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Know, let's not do high school. Let's do like thirty
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: because I think my demo's thirty.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: And above got you thirty, that's even better. I would say,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: you know, get a YouTube channel. Start your YouTube channel
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: and one or two subscribers all eesn't matter. Start your
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: YouTube channels. You have a place to land your media
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: thats not a social media platform. And then repost your
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: stuff to your Instagram first of all, just to start right.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: You want to people are going to catch fire to
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: you one day and they weren't gonna go and they're
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: gonna want to go back and look at what you've done.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Never stop moving, Never stop moving, never stop learning. Learn
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: everything that you need to know about what it's gonna
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: take to make you shine. Right. So, you need to
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: learn how to be your own cameraman. You need to
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: learn how to light yourself. You need to learn how
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: to like just practice like doing all of the things
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: that that you want somebody else to do. It for
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: you and who you want to hire and all of that.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: You got to do it yourself first period, Like you
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: have to be your first client. You have to be
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: your first everything. Like, so don't expect people to just
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: buy into your shit because you saying that you want
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: to do it. Unfortunately everybody says that and everybody wants
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: to do it. So you have to be the first
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: person to be your first everything. You got to be
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: your first manager. You gotta be okay with that, right,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Like with the more people you get to buy in,
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: the less you have to do it and the more
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: rest you can get. But in the meantime, you gotta jump.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: You cannot be lazy. I can't be lazy with it.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: You have to do it, like whatever it takes. And
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: it's kind of like, we know what it takes, we
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: just need somebody to tell us. But you don't need
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: nobody to say. You know exactly what you're supposed to do.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: But now, what would you say if they're like, well,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: I'm okay, what if I do it and a year
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: or two years in we don't have like one hundred followers,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Do I give up then? Or do I keep going?
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: No? Don't you know I mean like it depends on
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: how important it is to you. Right, So, like after
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: two years of being in it, you have enough content
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: where you can start to assess yourself. You know, where
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: did you see strength, Where did you see weakness? Where
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: did you see the most success? What do people like
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: about you the most? And then start to accentuate those
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: things and keep going, like you don't blow up until
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: you blow up. Everything is practiced until then. So it's
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: like you just you got to settle into the fact
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: that it's going to be a journey and fall in
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: love with the journey of it. Like, if you can't
