- 1:08Speaker 3: The live transmission has begun, and we're into the final
- 1:12Speaker 3: hour of hell.
- 1:32Speaker 9: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown's Attack of the
- 1:34Speaker 9: Killers soundtrack. I'm Brian, and this week marks the last
- 1:38Speaker 9: episode of 2014. And since this past year has been
- 1:41Speaker 9: the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain, traditionally the Pearl anniversary,
- 1:46Speaker 9: I thought we would put.
- 1:46Speaker 10: Together Pearl Rain.
- 1:48Speaker 9: A special retrospective of Prince's monumental soundtrack. So for most
- 1:52Speaker 9: of this past year, I've been planning and working on
- 1:55Speaker 9: this episode, finding new versions of the songs and talking
- 1:58Speaker 9: to different people about the soundtrack, and the more I
- 2:01Speaker 9: worked on it, the more material I had. So much
- 2:04Speaker 9: so that I saw we could easily do two different
- 2:07Speaker 9: episodes and assemble two completely different versions of the soundtrack.
- 2:11Speaker 9: So that's what we're doing here, finishing up the second
- 2:14Speaker 9: half of this epic musical journey. Now, if you haven't
- 2:17Speaker 9: listened to the other half, feel free to go back
- 2:19Speaker 9: a few episodes and you'll find Volume 1, where I
- 2:22Speaker 9: sat down with Jacqueline and Nick and we discussed, very frankly,
- 2:25Speaker 9: our thoughts on Prince and his amazing music. But this
- 2:28Speaker 9: time we're going to go out in the world and
- 2:30Speaker 9: talk with a lot of different people about our soundtrack.
- 2:33Speaker 9: One of the main places I talked with people was
- 2:35Speaker 9: at the 30th anniversary party for the movie put together
- 2:38Speaker 9: by Allison Longmire and the people over at Art FM.
- 2:41Speaker 9: They run a great independent radio station that you can
- 2:43Speaker 9: actually check out online at ArtXFM.com. But at that event,
- 2:47Speaker 9: there were obviously quite a few Prince fans on hand,
- 2:50Speaker 9: and several singers and musicians who performed their own versions
- 2:54Speaker 9: of the songs after they showed the movie that night.
- 2:57Speaker 9: So I talked to quite a few of them, who
- 2:58Speaker 9: we will check in with throughout this episode. Plus, I've
- 3:01Speaker 9: talked to several of our special guest co-hosts who've been
- 3:04Speaker 9: on the show this past year. So we'll also get
- 3:06Speaker 9: some comments from them as we go along as well.
- 3:09Speaker 9: All that having been said.
- 3:10Speaker 10: Let's get started.
- 3:12Speaker 11: At my signal, unleash hell.
- 3:15Speaker 9: Now, I talked with our friend Joe that night at
- 3:17Speaker 9: the Purple Rain event, and we talked about getting that
- 3:19Speaker 9: event started, so I thought he would be a good
- 3:21Speaker 9: way to kick off this episode.
- 3:32Speaker 10: All right, so give us your name, sir.
- 3:34Speaker 12: I'm Joseph Dukowitz.
- 3:36Speaker 10: And you are the Master of Ceremonies tonight? That's true.
- 3:38Speaker 12: I am the Master of Ceremonies tonight.
- 3:41Speaker 9: The question of the night is, what was your first
- 3:43Speaker 9: memory of Prince? Where did he enter your life?
- 3:46Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 3:47Speaker 12: That was a long time ago. It's a fuzzy memory now,
- 3:50Speaker 12: and much of it's not. Is this a family program?
- 3:53Speaker 9: We've covered that earlier. We're trying to get people to
- 3:56Speaker 9: curse as much as possible, really. So feel free to
- 3:58Speaker 9: go to town.
- 3:59Speaker 13: Oh, geez.
- 4:00Speaker 12: Well, I can't really do that, but I will say
- 4:02Speaker 12: that it was probably somewhere in around 1984, 83. I
- 4:05Speaker 12: think this was right before Purple Rain. And my specific
- 4:12Speaker 12: memory is Purple Rain was now a thing. So this
- 4:17Speaker 12: is 1984. Jump back here.
- 4:18Speaker 10: You might want to edit all this.
- 4:20Speaker 13: The rambling.
- 4:21Speaker 12: And I remember watching something like Star Search or an
- 4:24Speaker 12: equivalent show. And there was a lady on the show
- 4:28Speaker 12: who was there doing her very best impression of Prince.
- 4:32Speaker 12: And she had a Prince tattoo, like, on her neck.
- 4:36Speaker 12: This was kind of during a time where that's not
- 4:37Speaker 12: something that unless you're in prison, you probably would do.
- 4:40Speaker 10: Yeah, it was a different world in 84.
- 4:42Speaker 12: And the host of the show is like, wow, you're really,
- 4:45Speaker 12: really pretty, you know, taken with Prince. And she's like,
- 4:49Speaker 12: I hope he sees this and he'll marry me. And
- 4:53Speaker 12: I was really, at that point, as a 13 or
- 4:55Speaker 12: 14-year-old person, I was really impressed of just the dynamic
- 5:00Speaker 12: relationship vortex of energy that Prince would pull people in
- 5:04Speaker 12: with and I felt that too and it's like wow
- 5:07Speaker 12: well if it doesn't work out with Prince and that
- 5:09Speaker 12: lady maybe that lady could hook up with me so
- 5:13Speaker 12: that never worked out and that's the true story that's
- 5:15Speaker 12: probably the most memorable experience in the early years with Prince.
- 5:20Speaker 10: Is it ready to roll?
- 5:22Speaker 12: It is show time alright thank you very.
- 5:24Speaker 10: Much it's time to kick off the show let's do that.
- 5:27Speaker 14: Dearly beloved We are gathered here today.
- 5:31Speaker 10: To get through this thing called life.
- 5:35Speaker 14: Electric word life, that means forever, and that's a mighty
- 5:38Speaker 14: long time. But I'm here to tell you, there's something else.
- 5:42Speaker 14: The afterworld. A world of never-ending happiness. You can always
- 5:49Speaker 14: see the sun, day or night. So when you call
- 5:56Speaker 14: up that shrink in Beverly Hills, you.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Know the one.
- 5:58Speaker 15: Dr.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Everything will be all right.
- 6:00Speaker 14: Instead of asking how much time you have left, ask
- 6:03Speaker 14: how much of your mind, baby. Because in this life,
- 6:07Speaker 14: things are much harder than in the afterworld.
- 6:08Speaker 10: In this life, you're on your own. And if the elevator.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Tries to break you down, go crazy. Punch a higher floor.
- 6:34Speaker 10: Would you live it in?
- 6:36Speaker 15: Take a look around you At least you got friends.
- 6:40Speaker 13: Said cry my own.
- 6:42Speaker 15: Lady For a friendly word She picked up the phone
- 6:47Speaker 15: Dropped it on the floor It's all.
- 6:50Speaker 16: I heard We gonna let the elevator.
- 6:53Speaker 17: Break Cause down I know Let's go It's going crazy
- 6:57Speaker 17: It's getting nuts.
- 7:01Speaker 16: We're all excited We don't know.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Why Maybe it's cause We're all gonna die And when.
- 7:07Speaker 6: We do.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Let's go crazy.
- 7:35Speaker 13: Let's get nuts.
- 7:38Speaker 14: Look for the purple man out.
- 7:43Speaker 13: To report us in the truck. Let's go.
- 8:13Speaker 3: We're gonna let the enemy break us down Let's go
- 8:17Speaker 3: crazy Let's go crazy Let's go, let's go, let's go Doctor,
- 8:24Speaker 3: everything will be alright Gonna make everything.
- 8:33Speaker 18: Go wrong Girls.
- 8:37Speaker 3: And frills and daffodils will kill Big tough children Let's go.
- 9:44Speaker 9: Yes, if you were paying attention at the end of
- 9:46Speaker 9: Volume 1, you heard Jacqueline hint at that band. She
- 9:49Speaker 9: seemed rather perplexed at the fact that Incubus had done
- 9:52Speaker 9: a cover of Let's Go Crazy. A little strange, but
- 9:55Speaker 9: I went with that one specifically because, if nothing else,
- 9:58Speaker 9: they deliver on the guitar solo. which is kind of
- 10:00Speaker 9: essential if you're going to cover Let's Go Crazy. Speaking
- 10:03Speaker 9: of Prince as a guitarist, at the live event, I
- 10:06Speaker 9: talked with Craig, one of the featured guitarists on.
- 10:08Speaker 10: Hand that night, and asked him his thoughts on just that.
- 10:20Speaker 10: All right, so could you tell us your name? Oh,
- 10:23Speaker 10: Craig Wagner.
- 10:25Speaker 9: You just did a pretty impressive solo there.
- 10:29Speaker 10: What are your thoughts on Prince as a guitarist, I suppose?
- 10:31Speaker 10: I love Prince's guitar playing.
- 10:33Speaker 19: In the same way, I kind of love Zappa's guitar
- 10:36Speaker 19: playing and everything that had this own character. It kind
- 10:39Speaker 19: of came out of Hendrix, but it had its own
- 10:42Speaker 19: direction after that. I mean, sonically, it was coming from
- 10:44Speaker 19: that point of view. But he's such an amazing musician,
- 10:48Speaker 19: you know?
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 10: All the subtle stuff he does.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Like a signature sound that not every guitar player can have.
- 10:55Speaker 10: Yeah, you know.
- 10:56Speaker 19: Yeah, I mean, I love his guitar playing always. I
- 11:00Speaker 19: actually wish I'd heard more of it on his records,
- 11:03Speaker 19: you know. But on this album, you hear probably about
- 11:07Speaker 19: as much of it you do on any other one.
- 11:09Speaker 19: Let's Go Crazy and this tune and, you.
- 11:11Speaker 17: Know, so.
- 11:13Speaker 9: Yeah, that guitar solo on Let's Go Crazy is amazing too.
- 11:16Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 11:18Speaker 9: How technically challenging is his compared to other guitars?
- 11:23Speaker 10: I mean, it's definitely up there, man.
- 11:26Speaker 19: You know, he's a top-notch guitar player, especially in, like,
- 11:31Speaker 19: the kind of blues rock, kind of, you know, post-Hendrix
- 11:35Speaker 19: kind of vein, right?
- 11:37Speaker 20: To me, anyway.
- 11:49Speaker 9: So now we're going to go to one of those
- 11:50Speaker 9: extra special guests I mentioned earlier. Before we head into
- 11:53Speaker 9: the next song, we're going to talk with none other
- 11:55Speaker 9: than Miss Lisa Loeb.
- 11:58Speaker 10: Are you a Prince fan?
- 11:59Speaker 21: I'm a huge Prince fan.
- 12:01Speaker 18: I will say, though, that I like the music from
- 12:03Speaker 18: his movies better than the movies. Like, I am obsessed
- 12:06Speaker 18: with the Under Cherry Moon soundtrack album.
- 12:09Speaker 10: Oh, my God.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 12:10Speaker 21: But it was hard to watch the movie.
- 12:13Speaker 9: It's a strange movie but I'm actually doing a special
- 12:16Speaker 9: episode on the it's the this year is the 30th
- 12:19Speaker 9: anniversary of Purple.
- 12:19Speaker 10: Rain which is kind of staggering but but.
- 12:23Speaker 9: Yeah I'm trying to have people kind of pick their
- 12:25Speaker 9: favorite songs or like from Purple Rain.
- 12:29Speaker 18: I'm trying to think what else is on Purple Rain
- 12:30Speaker 18: oh my gosh oh there's so many great songs on
- 12:33Speaker 18: this album Take Me With You is pretty great yeah
- 12:41Speaker 18: It has those slightly out-of-tune bells.
- 12:43Speaker 13: And things like that in it.
- 12:44Speaker 10: Well, that's the duet one, too.
- 12:47Speaker 9: To me, she's got a weird delivery on that, so
- 12:49Speaker 9: I think you need to re-record that now.
- 12:51Speaker 21: Oh, interesting.
- 12:52Speaker 10: Interesting.
- 12:53Speaker 21: That's a good choice.
- 12:53Speaker 10: That's a good idea.
- 12:55Speaker 21: Yeah, I do love Take Me With You. I think
- 12:56Speaker 21: it's one of my favorites off of that. It's so great.
- 12:59Speaker 3: ¶ ¶ I can't disguise.
- 13:14Speaker 16: The pounding in my heart It beats so.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Strong It's in your eyes What can I say?
- 13:26Speaker 13: They turn me.
- 13:27Speaker 3: On I don't care where we go I don't care
- 13:34Speaker 3: what we do I don't care, baby.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Just take me with.
- 13:45Speaker 16: You Come on, touch the place in me It's calling
- 13:49Speaker 16: out your name We want each other oh so much
- 13:56Speaker 16: Why must we play this game?
- 13:58Speaker 3: Don't care where we go I don't care what we
- 14:06Speaker 3: do I don't care pretty baby, just take me with you.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I don't care if you spend the night at your mansion.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I don't care if you spend the night on the town.
- 14:32Speaker 3: All I want is to spend.
- 14:35Speaker 1: The night together.
- 14:37Speaker 3: All I want is to smell the light in your
- 14:45Speaker 3: arms To be around you is just so right You're
- 14:51Speaker 3: sheer perfection You.
- 14:55Speaker 16: Drive me crazy and drive me home And I just
- 14:58Speaker 16: can't break off the connection.
- 15:03Speaker 3: I don't care where we go, I don't.
- 15:07Speaker 13: Care what we do.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I don't care pretty baby, just take me with you.
- 15:19Speaker 3: I don't care where we.
- 15:20Speaker 13: Go, I don't care.
- 15:23Speaker 3: What we do. I don't care pretty baby, just take
- 15:30Speaker 3: me with you.
- 15:48Speaker 9: And that was Charlene Spiteri's version of Take Me With You.
- 15:51Speaker 9: Now I know I was going to have to work
- 15:53Speaker 9: that one in there because I was a big Texas
- 15:54Speaker 9: fan all the way back to their first album. And
- 15:57Speaker 9: I thought it was interesting in more recent years that
- 16:00Speaker 9: Charlene had done not just a solo album, but a
- 16:03Speaker 9: solo album that was strictly songs from movies. So not
- 16:06Speaker 9: only was it great to find out she's covered Take
- 16:08Speaker 9: Me With You, but there's some other interesting songs on there,
- 16:11Speaker 9: so I'm sure we will return to that solo album
- 16:14Speaker 9: in future episodes.

- 16:49Speaker 3: Don't you lay no evil down on me.
- 16:52Speaker 7: You're gonna burn in hell.
- 16:54Speaker 22: Hear no evil, don't you lay no evil.
- 16:58Speaker 16: I'm Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, writer, star of Strangeland, radio, TV,
- 17:04Speaker 16: you know me, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 17:08Speaker 23: Yeah.
- 17:25Speaker 9: All right, so next up as we lead into this
- 17:26Speaker 9: next track we're going to talk with Sarah and Jackson
- 17:29Speaker 9: from the Ladybirds. Now, you've heard me mention them on
- 17:32Speaker 9: a previous episode. They are a great band. Check them
- 17:34Speaker 9: out if they're playing near you. But that night, they
- 17:36Speaker 9: were hanging outside the venue with me, and we talked
- 17:39Speaker 9: quite a bit about our man of the hour, Prince.
- 17:55Speaker 3: It's kind of annoying when a guy can sing higher
- 17:59Speaker 3: than you effortlessly.
- 18:02Speaker 10: Prince is a special, special guy.
- 18:04Speaker 11: He's very special.
- 18:05Speaker 3: I'm not thinking he's a boring guy.
- 18:08Speaker 21: I'm a little bit, like, boring for Prince.
- 18:10Speaker 10: He's, yeah.
- 18:11Speaker 9: So I figured if you got in trouble with girls,
- 18:13Speaker 9: I remember when we watched the movie and did the episode,
- 18:15Speaker 9: I pointed out, like, how is he not, like, how
- 18:17Speaker 9: does he... hook up with all these girls when truthfully
- 18:20Speaker 9: like he can wear.
- 18:21Speaker 10: Clothes skinnier than theirs and they'd be like screw you
- 18:25Speaker 10: buddy I'm out of here like.
- 18:27Speaker 9: You stole my jean yeah like some of the pants
- 18:30Speaker 9: he wears in this movie I'm just like he's tiny
- 18:33Speaker 9: like maybe like I don't I don't want to go
- 18:35Speaker 9: out with a guy that's skinnier no screw you buddy
- 18:38Speaker 9: all right so we're here with back with Sarah previous
- 18:42Speaker 9: guest from the West Fest episode hi there would you
- 18:47Speaker 9: like to introduce your partner I.
- 18:49Speaker 21: Would love to.
- 18:49Speaker 24: So, I'm Sarah Swain from the Ladybirds, and this is
- 18:52Speaker 24: my partner in crime and the bass player for the Ladybirds,
- 18:56Speaker 24: Jackson Swain.
- 18:56Speaker 11: Hey, babies.
- 18:59Speaker 24: He's also the awesome door dude for this 30th anniversary
- 19:04Speaker 24: Purple Rain fun party. And we're going to be singing
- 19:08Speaker 24: a song a little bit later, too. So, we're batting
- 19:10Speaker 24: down the hatches for a big old night.
- 19:12Speaker 9: So, I guess the question for... for the night is what,
- 19:15Speaker 9: where was your first interaction with Prince? What was the
- 19:17Speaker 9: first time you remember seeing this guy, I guess, crazy character,
- 19:23Speaker 9: whatever he is that, cause I remember seeing him that
- 19:25Speaker 9: first time and being like, I don't know how to
- 19:27Speaker 9: process this.
- 19:27Speaker 11: I don't know what it is.
- 19:28Speaker 10: So yeah. What is this guy doing?
- 19:30Speaker 9: Like he's, he's very strange, but I was a small child. So,
- 19:33Speaker 9: you know, we were confused anyway.
- 19:34Speaker 10: So what, I don't know. What was your first, uh,
- 19:37Speaker 10: remembrances of Prince?
- 19:39Speaker 24: That's a great question. Well, Prince is certainly a lot
- 19:41Speaker 24: to take in. especially for a child. We're all kids
- 19:44Speaker 24: of the 80s. But the first song I remember of
- 19:47Speaker 24: his is definitely Raspberry Beret.
- 19:50Speaker 21: But I don't really recall the music video.
- 19:52Speaker 24: So I just kind of, you know, it was more
- 19:54Speaker 24: auditory and less visual, even though there's a lot visually
- 19:58Speaker 24: there when that finally did roll around. Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 21: But yeah, Raspberry Beret was my jam.
- 20:03Speaker 9: It's sort of a cartoon.
- 20:05Speaker 10: It's live action, but it feels sort of like a cartoon,
- 20:08Speaker 10: that video.
- 20:09Speaker 21: Everything about him feels a little like a cartoon.
- 20:11Speaker 10: You might have a point there.
- 20:12Speaker 24: It's just too, it's so cool and perfect. It's like,
- 20:15Speaker 24: can't be real life, you know? Another, well, so Little
- 20:19Speaker 24: Red Corvette is another one of my favorites. The raspberry
- 20:24Speaker 24: and the red go well together.
- 20:26Speaker 10: He does have a color thing, doesn't he?
- 20:28Speaker 16: Mm-hmm.
- 20:28Speaker 24: And with the purple, yeah, yeah. He's got a really
- 20:31Speaker 24: good color palette. They say that purple is the color
- 20:33Speaker 24: of royalty, so... He is Prince. Yeah, yeah, obviously.
- 20:37Speaker 21: It's a good choice.
- 20:38Speaker 10: At some point, will he, like, graduate up?
- 20:40Speaker 9: Will he end up being king somewhere, like, when he's
- 20:42Speaker 9: 80 or 90?
- 20:43Speaker 10: Yeah, I don't know.
- 20:44Speaker 24: The etiquette on that. Because, like, you know, Elvis is
- 20:46Speaker 24: the king. Well, the king of rock and roll. Prince, actually,
- 20:49Speaker 24: I do feel like he should be king of what
- 20:51Speaker 24: would you even say his particular.
- 20:53Speaker 21: Genre is, like.
- 20:55Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 20:56Speaker 21: Grind pop, sexy grind pop with lace cuffs.
- 21:00Speaker 9: I don't know, because then Michael started trying to, like,
- 21:03Speaker 9: horn in on that area. Because I remember before, like, years,
- 21:06Speaker 9: but kind of before he went into that, like, shutdown mode. But, like,
- 21:09Speaker 9: those last 10 or 15 years, at some point he
- 21:11Speaker 9: declared himself the king of rock, pop, and soul.
- 21:14Speaker 21: Oh, you can just call all those genres.
- 21:16Speaker 10: I was like, that's all. I mean, you are a
- 21:18Speaker 10: lot of crossover, Michael. I'll give you that. But I
- 21:20Speaker 10: was like, that's a bold statement.
- 21:22Speaker 21: That is bold. Yeah, very bold.
- 21:24Speaker 24: I feel like James Brown might have something to say,
- 21:26Speaker 24: although he's the godfather.
- 21:28Speaker 9: So, yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 24: There's enough titles. Really, there are enough titles to go
- 21:31Speaker 24: around for everyone, I guess, as long as we can
- 21:33Speaker 24: get creative.
- 21:34Speaker 10: Everybody just needs to make up a new thing for them.
- 21:36Speaker 10: The viceroy of rock and roll.
- 21:38Speaker 21: Yeah, nice. That's perfect.
- 21:40Speaker 10: Patented.
- 21:41Speaker 21: Yeah, that's right. TM, trademark, bam, done.
- 21:45Speaker 10: Copyright pending.
- 21:47Speaker 8: Nice.
- 21:48Speaker 10: We go into all the stuff.
- 21:49Speaker 25: Absolutely.
- 21:50Speaker 10: Memories of favorite songs.
- 21:52Speaker 21: I think that's a great question.
- 21:54Speaker 24: Yeah, and I wish I had some really super vivid
- 21:58Speaker 24: flashbulb tableau where it's.
- 22:00Speaker 21: Like I was here and then the lights dimmed and bam, explosion.
- 22:05Speaker 24: But it was just kind of growing up. I was
- 22:06Speaker 24: born in 1980. Do the math.
- 22:09Speaker 21: I don't like math. It grew up me either boring.
- 22:12Speaker 24: But so when you grow up with something, it's kind
- 22:14Speaker 24: of just the norm, like when you know something was
- 22:16Speaker 24: around before you were. So it was just like, yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 24: prince androgynous like he's so ladylike and sexy i don't
- 22:24Speaker 24: understand how i'm feeling but i love all these songs
- 22:26Speaker 24: you know can't.
- 22:27Speaker 9: Argue that here's the question the old school purple rain
- 22:31Speaker 9: question did you have it on cassette tape.
- 22:33Speaker 24: Oh my sister did so she's a little bit older
- 22:35Speaker 24: than me and always got to the cool stuff a
- 22:37Speaker 24: little before i did um but that was good so
- 22:40Speaker 24: it just like all the cool things were just waiting
- 22:42Speaker 24: for me once i was ready so shout out to
- 22:45Speaker 24: dr amy wendell bam Is she still.
- 22:48Speaker 10: Listening to it, you think?
- 22:50Speaker 3: Hopefully.
- 22:52Speaker 10: Did you have it on cassette tape? Are we going
- 22:54Speaker 10: back that far for you?
- 22:56Speaker 11: Yes, we had the Purple Rain cassette in my home
- 22:59Speaker 11: for sure.
- 23:00Speaker 18: Yes.
- 23:01Speaker 9: And aside from the one you're performing tonight, do you
- 23:03Speaker 9: have a favorite track?
- 23:06Speaker 11: Well, I mean, that's hard. I mean, Darling Nikki, that's
- 23:11Speaker 11: what we're performing. I mean, I love that. I definitely
- 23:14Speaker 11: love that one. I mean, I think probably.
- 23:16Speaker 10: The.
- 23:16Speaker 26: Beautiful Ones is like one of the most amazing songs.
- 23:20Speaker 11: It's so dramatic and, you know, it's so intense.
- 23:23Speaker 26: I've always had a soft spot for that one.
- 23:25Speaker 15: Baby, baby, baby What's it gonna be?
- 23:38Speaker 3: Baby, baby, baby.
- 23:45Speaker 15: Is it harvested me?
- 23:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 22: Don't make me waste my time.
- 23:55Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 15: Don't make me lose my mind.
- 24:01Speaker 13: Baby.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Baby, baby, baby.
- 24:06Speaker 27: Ah.
- 24:11Speaker 13: Can't you stay.
- 24:12Speaker 22: With me tonight? Baby, baby, baby.
- 24:24Speaker 15: Don't my kisses please you right? You are so hard
- 24:32Speaker 15: to find. Beautiful ones that hurt you every time.
- 24:46Speaker 3: If I told you.
- 24:50Speaker 22: Baby That I was in love with you, love with
- 25:10Speaker 22: you Baby, baby, baby Oh, if we got married I'd
- 25:18Speaker 22: be so.
- 25:19Speaker 28: Down for that.
- 25:22Speaker 15: You make me so confused, oh Beautiful ones, you're all
- 25:33Speaker 15: we seem to lose.
- 25:39Speaker 22: Baby, baby, baby, baby.
- 25:50Speaker 13: Listen to me, baby. I want to be the only
- 25:57Speaker 13: one you'll run to.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 22: Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 24: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 29: Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 16: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 23: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 16: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:06Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:06Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 27: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 23: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 30: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 30: Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 22: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 30: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 16: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 25: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:24Speaker 9: Candace is actually from Nashville, but relocated to New York City,
- 26:28Speaker 9: and in November of 2013, she sat down at a
- 26:31Speaker 9: piano at Capitol Studios and sang one song.
- 26:36Speaker 10: One song.
- 26:37Speaker 9: She was so impressive in that one song that Blue
- 26:40Speaker 9: Note Records president Mr. Don Was offered her a record
- 26:43Speaker 9: deal on the spot.
- 26:45Speaker 10: Rightfully so, I might add.
- 26:47Speaker 9: And if that wasn't enough, Prince himself heard her doing
- 26:50Speaker 9: a cover of Sam Smith's song.
- 26:51Speaker 10: Stay With Me online.
- 26:53Speaker 9: and ask her to perform at Paisley Park for his
- 26:56Speaker 9: own Purple Rain 30th Anniversary Celebration. Which was probably about
- 27:00Speaker 9: as cool as this one, but either way, that's quite
- 27:02Speaker 9: an honor. Candice is currently working on her debut solo
- 27:06Speaker 9: album to be released in the spring of 2015, and
- 27:09Speaker 9: I would say to look for it. She definitely made
- 27:11Speaker 9: that song her own and took it in a completely
- 27:13Speaker 9: different direction. Tone down the angstiness that kicks in towards
- 27:16Speaker 9: the end of the original, but without sacrificing any of
- 27:19Speaker 9: the soulfulness. In fact, maybe adds a new, different layer
- 27:23Speaker 9: to it. It's a great version of that song.
- 27:25Speaker 31: This is the kind of music that tells me to
- 27:27Speaker 31: go out there and free somebody!
- 27:29Speaker 9: And as we head into the next song, let's check
- 27:31Speaker 9: back in with Craig. Of all the ones here, what
- 27:34Speaker 9: is sort of your favorite track on that album?
- 27:36Speaker 19: I mean, I love When Doves Cry a lot. There's
- 27:38Speaker 19: that one little, what is it called? There's this one
- 27:41Speaker 19: little instrumental thing. It was like that tune that his
- 27:44Speaker 19: dad wrote.
- 27:45Speaker 10: What was that? That's the end of Computer Blue. Yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 10: Computer Blue. I love that tune.
- 27:51Speaker 27: Computer Blue.
- 28:16Speaker 17: Until I find the.
- 28:23Speaker 6: One that's wrong.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 29:49Speaker 9: Yes, Computer Blue, as I've mentioned on several previous episodes.
- 29:53Speaker 9: Possibly my favorite track on the album, definitely my favorite
- 29:56Speaker 9: hidden gem on the soundtrack, and Truthfully, the only original
- 30:00Speaker 9: song off that soundtrack that I've played.
- 30:02Speaker 10: On the show before. Very first episode, Computer Blue was
- 30:05Speaker 10: on there. Because it's awesome.
- 30:07Speaker 9: But not covered as much as all the other songs.
- 30:10Speaker 9: I found many, many versions of pretty much every other.
- 30:13Speaker 10: Song on the soundtrack. But not Computer Blue. There were
- 30:17Speaker 10: only a handful of songs.
- 30:19Speaker 9: We'd already played the Of Montreal version off Purpleish Rain.
- 30:22Speaker 9: So it's like it was kind of hard to track
- 30:23Speaker 9: down another version of Computer Blue.
- 30:26Speaker 10: So that was Randy.
- 30:28Speaker 9: A Swedish punk rock band from an album called Purple Pain,
- 30:32Speaker 9: which is kind of doing something similar.
- 30:33Speaker 10: To what we're doing here if everything we were playing
- 30:36Speaker 10: was from Swedish rock bands. Yes, the entire soundtrack is
- 30:40Speaker 10: done by bands in Sweden. Purple Pain. It was hard
- 30:45Speaker 10: to track down, let me tell you.
- 30:46Speaker 9: So if you find yourself a copy out there, go
- 30:48Speaker 9: ahead and pick it up because they are hard to
- 30:50Speaker 9: come by in this country.
- 30:52Speaker 13: How do you use a magazine?
- 30:53Speaker 1: I was getting to that.
- 30:56Speaker 9: Alright, so now we're at the most infamous track on
- 30:59Speaker 9: the album. And more so than all of the hit
- 31:01Speaker 9: singles off this soundtrack, this was the song that everybody wanted.
- 31:05Speaker 10: To talk to me about.
- 31:06Speaker 9: So along the way here, we'll check back in with
- 31:08Speaker 9: Sarah and Jackson from the Ladybirds. We'll also check in
- 31:10Speaker 9: with Simon, Mark, and Thomas from the band The Wands,
- 31:13Speaker 9: who we had on earlier this year. But first up,
- 31:16Speaker 9: we're going to kick off this very different version of
- 31:19Speaker 9: the song, done by Talisman, with a little intro and
- 31:22Speaker 9: a dramatic lyrical reading from Zach and Shane.
- 31:26Speaker 10: the band Houndmouth.
- 31:28Speaker 9: Does anyone have any thoughts on this album right here
- 31:31Speaker 9: Purple Rain it's the 30th anniversary is it really yeah
- 31:36Speaker 9: that's kind of scary I think wow can I see that.
- 31:39Speaker 27: I think that Purple Rain is just one of the
- 31:42Speaker 27: best albums of all time and I don't think of
- 31:44Speaker 27: it in a movie sense because I listen to the
- 31:47Speaker 27: album all the way through before you know before you
- 31:49Speaker 27: see the movie so I just think of it as
- 31:51Speaker 27: like a piece of musical art not as something accompanying
- 31:54Speaker 27: a video And every song in there is just fire.
- 32:00Speaker 6: Matt and I used to cover Purple Rain. We were
- 32:02Speaker 6: in this little Motown thing for a while, and we
- 32:04Speaker 6: used to cover Purple Rain. Is it Darling Nikki that
- 32:07Speaker 6: was the one that they couldn't even play on the
- 32:09Speaker 6: radio because it was so fucking.
- 32:11Speaker 10: It's the racy one.
- 32:12Speaker 11: Yeah, I like that. Why don't you quote us some lyrics?
- 32:16Speaker 10: From Darling Nikki?
- 32:17Speaker 9: Some grinding going on.
- 32:20Speaker 10: There's a magazine. You're going to read these two lines.
- 32:25Speaker 6: Her loving will kick your behind. She'll show you no mercy,
- 32:29Speaker 6: but she'll show enough, show enough, show you how to grind.
- 32:35Speaker 11: Nice.
- 32:36Speaker 6: Darling Nikki. This is like when it was cool to
- 32:39Speaker 6: write Instead of T-O-O, the number two.
- 32:43Speaker 10: I think that was just his thing.
- 32:44Speaker 16: Was it?
- 32:45Speaker 10: I don't know that anybody else could pull that off.
- 32:46Speaker 6: There's a lot of numbers, like for a good time.
- 32:48Speaker 10: He also uses an I. Die for you. He uses
- 32:51Speaker 10: an I.
- 32:51Speaker 6: Yeah, and the letter U is, yeah. That's why I
- 32:54Speaker 6: sound like a jackass reading it just then. I promise
- 32:56Speaker 6: I'm not illiterate. It's just tough to read Prince's shorthand.
- 33:00Speaker 9: Well, again, if it was anybody else, wouldn't you kind
- 33:01Speaker 9: of call him out for that? But it's Prince, so
- 33:03Speaker 9: you're like, no, he can do that. Right, yeah, well,
- 33:05Speaker 9: he can pretty much do whatever you want.
- 33:23Speaker 7: A girl named Nikki.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I guess you could say she was a sex fiend.
- 33:28Speaker 16: I met her at a hotel lobby, masturbating with a magazine.
- 33:32Speaker 15: She said, how'd you like to wait some time?
- 33:35Speaker 13: And I could not resist when.
- 33:37Speaker 11: A slow little Nikki cried.
- 33:50Speaker 23: She took me to a castle I just couldn't believe
- 33:54Speaker 23: my eyes She had so many devices Everything and money
- 34:00Speaker 23: combined She said sign the name on the dining line
- 34:04Speaker 23: The lights went out Nickel.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I can't tell you what you did to me. I'm
- 34:21Speaker 1: on my.
- 34:21Speaker 21: Body, but never be the same.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Oh, Nikki, with a little kick, you're behind.
- 34:26Speaker 13: She'll show you.
- 34:28Speaker 23: No mercy, but she'll shine up, shine up, shine up. Yeah,
- 34:34Speaker 23: she'll show you how to grind.
- 34:46Speaker 13: Woke up the next morning, and Nikki wasn't there.
- 34:51Speaker 23: I looked all over, and all I found was a
- 34:54Speaker 23: phone number on the stairs. It said, thank you for
- 34:58Speaker 23: a funky time.
- 35:01Speaker 13: Call me up whenever you want to cry.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Yeah, Nikki!
- 35:18Speaker 13: Oh, come back, Nicky, come back.
- 35:22Speaker 22: You tiny little grinch want.
- 35:31Speaker 3: To grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind. That's it,
- 35:38Speaker 3: that's it, that's it. Hold on, I got to go.
- 36:06Speaker 24: I guess we're kind of covering my favorite track, which
- 36:10Speaker 24: is Darling Nikki.
- 36:11Speaker 21: I was like, let's do the dirtiest one.
- 36:13Speaker 10: The infamous Darling Nikki.
- 36:16Speaker 24: Yes, so that's the one Jackson and I are duetting on.
- 36:18Speaker 24: We thought it would be fun for people to see
- 36:21Speaker 24: a married couple duet on Darling Nikki.
- 36:24Speaker 9: I'm putting together a special. We're coming up on the
- 36:27Speaker 9: anniversary of an album. I wanted to see your thoughts
- 36:29Speaker 9: on this album right here.
- 36:30Speaker 13: Oh, no.
- 36:32Speaker 10: Oh, yes. Does anyone have any feelings about this album?
- 36:35Speaker 10: I love it.
- 36:36Speaker 9: They want to hear the frightening thing. It's the 30th
- 36:39Speaker 9: anniversary of this release. It scares the hell out of them.
- 36:43Speaker 9: We're trying to put together sort of a retrospective on it.
- 36:45Speaker 9: One of the first records I ever bought, just side note,
- 36:48Speaker 9: not specific to that, but one of the first records
- 36:51Speaker 9: I ever bought, I was eight years old. Yeah. Had
- 36:54Speaker 9: my mom take me to a Tower Records, or I
- 36:58Speaker 9: think it was Tower Records, whatever it was, and had
- 37:00Speaker 9: her buy me that Prince's Diamonds and Pearls.
- 37:05Speaker 6: Nice.
- 37:06Speaker 10: Did it have the fancy sticker on the front? You know,
- 37:09Speaker 10: I don't remember. That's the one I.
- 37:11Speaker 9: I just remember, like, I was eight years old, really
- 37:14Speaker 9: into that song, Get Off. That explains how things have
- 37:19Speaker 9: worked out, doesn't it?
- 37:21Speaker 10: It does explain.
- 37:22Speaker 9: And for some reason, my mom was like, absolutely.
- 37:25Speaker 13: We can go get that record.
- 37:27Speaker 10: That's how we get up.
- 37:29Speaker 32: That's how we get up.
- 37:31Speaker 10: That was the first time I'd seen that movie. I
- 37:34Speaker 10: fucking was laughing my ass off.
- 37:36Speaker 32: The last scene where he walks off the stage and
- 37:39Speaker 32: everyone's got a single tear in their eye.
- 37:42Speaker 9: It's one of those, we re-watched it a couple years ago,
- 37:44Speaker 9: and you want to make fun of it the entire time.
- 37:47Speaker 9: It's very silly, but then he gets on stage, and
- 37:49Speaker 9: you kind of can argue with him.
- 37:51Speaker 32: I've never seen Prince before, but I've heard his shows
- 37:54Speaker 32: are fucking awesome.
- 37:55Speaker 10: I've heard they're mind-blowing.
- 38:00Speaker 9: A friend of mine ran into Prince one time and
- 38:03Speaker 9: said that he was the tiniest person he's ever met.
- 38:07Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 9: Really kind of almost like a.
- 38:11Speaker 10: Like an ethereal hobbit.
- 38:14Speaker 32: Have you ever watched the, I think it was a
- 38:17Speaker 32: tribute to George Harrison?
- 38:18Speaker 10: Did you ever see that live show that they did?
- 38:21Speaker 32: Prince came out and played guitar on While My Guitar
- 38:25Speaker 32: Gently Weeps. At the very end, he throws his guitar up,
- 38:29Speaker 32: and the way it's shot, it's like the guitar never
- 38:32Speaker 32: comes down.
- 38:32Speaker 10: And he just walks off stage, it's like, oh my god,
- 38:35Speaker 10: that was amazing. It's badass. Again, everything Prince does is
- 38:38Speaker 10: kind of badass.
- 38:39Speaker 9: Yeah so i mean you you had to have been
- 38:41Speaker 9: i i saw you on stage earlier at some point
- 38:43Speaker 9: you're on the ground sort of writhing around you can't.
- 38:46Speaker 10: I mean that's my jig there's a little prince in
- 38:47Speaker 10: there right i mean.
- 38:50Speaker 9: There's some inspiration right absolutely oh no any any specific
- 38:56Speaker 9: song you guys liked or uh darling nikki of course
- 39:00Speaker 9: see that's what i remember again as as a child
- 39:03Speaker 9: more or less and listening to that and I don't.
- 39:05Speaker 10: Even know if I fully got it. I don't know
- 39:07Speaker 10: if I still figured it out, actually.
- 39:09Speaker 9: Yeah, that song was oddly way too sensual for me
- 39:13Speaker 9: to really comprehend what was going on. Especially as massively
- 39:19Speaker 9: popular as that album got, to have such a weird,
- 39:22Speaker 9: erotic song jammed in the middle of it there. The
- 39:24Speaker 9: rest are all stuff they're playing on TV and the radio.
- 39:26Speaker 10: And then, oh wait, get to this track. Guess what?
- 39:28Speaker 32: What what record was that uh little red corvette that
- 39:31Speaker 32: was before that actually.
- 39:32Speaker 9: That was 1999 yeah i almost want to take prince's
- 39:35Speaker 9: hand and just kind of give it a little smack
- 39:37Speaker 9: like dirty boy You take Prince's hand, I don't think
- 39:40Speaker 9: that's what's going to happen.
- 39:42Speaker 10: You might end up with a baby.
- 39:44Speaker 11: Or blueberry pancakes.
- 39:46Speaker 10: You guys want some pancakes? He does make really good pancakes.
- 39:50Speaker 13: I've heard.
- 39:53Speaker 9: Yes, as I said, that version was done by Talisman,
- 39:56Speaker 9: who were a Swedish hard rock band.
- 39:58Speaker 10: Again, we go back to Sweden.
- 40:00Speaker 9: Obviously, the Swedish people love Prince, but who doesn't, really?
- 40:04Speaker 8: Why don't you just love Prince?
- 40:06Speaker 1: More than life itself.
- 40:07Speaker 9: So now we're coming up on the biggest hit single
- 40:09Speaker 9: of the album. Certainly one of the best known and
- 40:11Speaker 9: most recognizable songs on the album, both then and today.
- 40:16Speaker 9: Still gets a lot of airplay even today. And we're
- 40:18Speaker 9: going to lead into it with Sharon from Art FM,
- 40:21Speaker 9: who has a great personal story as her tie-in to
- 40:23Speaker 9: the grandiose personal narrative that is When Doves Cry.
- 40:27Speaker 10: All right, that's it. Tell them your name.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Hi, I'm Sharon Scott.
- 40:37Speaker 9: And what is your favorite song from Purple Rain?
- 40:41Speaker 4: Is this a trick question?
- 40:42Speaker 9: They're all kind of awesome, but, you know, everybody has
- 40:45Speaker 9: their weird personal take on it.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I think on the album, Prince doing the songs, I
- 40:52Speaker 2: would go with When Doves Cry. Yeah. You know, I
- 40:55Speaker 2: had like a secret knot. It was our passcode to
- 40:58Speaker 2: the fort when we were kids. So, you know, kind
- 41:01Speaker 2: of nostalgic.
- 41:02Speaker 9: That's a good tie-in there. And still holds up 30
- 41:05Speaker 9: years later.
- 41:06Speaker 10: It's pretty impressive.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it is pretty impressive. So I think we all
- 41:09Speaker 2: enjoyed it then, enjoy it now.
- 41:11Speaker 3: I gave.
- 41:13Speaker 28: You a picture of you.
- 41:25Speaker 13: And I engaged in a kiss. Sweat of your body
- 41:37Speaker 13: covers me.
- 41:39Speaker 31: Can you, my darling, can you picture this?
- 41:44Speaker 13: Dream, if you can, a courtyard.
- 41:47Speaker 31: Oceans and violets and bloom.
- 41:52Speaker 13: Animals strike curious poses. They feel the heat, the heat
- 41:58Speaker 13: between me and you. Touch, if you will, my stomach.
- 42:04Speaker 31: Feel how it trembles inside You've got the butterflies all tied.
- 42:12Speaker 13: Up Don't make me chase you Cause even those half-pride
- 42:17Speaker 13: Can you just leave me.
- 42:18Speaker 31: Standing Alone in a world that's so cold Maybe I'm
- 42:26Speaker 31: just too demanding Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold.
- 42:33Speaker 13: Maybe I'm just like my mother.
- 42:37Speaker 31: She's never satisfied, never satisfied.
- 42:43Speaker 13: With each other.
- 42:46Speaker 31: This is what it sounds like when the dogs cry.
- 42:54Speaker 13: Don't cry.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Don't cry.
- 42:58Speaker 13: Don't cry.
- 42:59Speaker 3: Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't cry.
- 43:02Speaker 13: Don't cry. I ain't joking, woman. I've got your ramble.
- 43:37Speaker 30: I'll leave you when the summer comes.
- 43:46Speaker 13: Leave you when the summer comes along.
- 44:13Speaker 3: .
- 44:21Speaker 12: .
- 44:24Speaker 13: So dig if you will this picture of you and
- 44:36Speaker 13: I engaged in a kiss.
- 44:53Speaker 9: Now that song is one, when I first came up
- 44:54Speaker 9: with this concept, I knew I wanted to work that
- 44:57Speaker 9: version in there. If you remember back to Volume 1,
- 45:00Speaker 9: Jacqueline mentioned that, when doing a cover song, you don't
- 45:03Speaker 9: want to do it just like the original artist. Ideally,
- 45:06Speaker 9: you want to take what's good about the original, and
- 45:08Speaker 9: weave it in there with what you do best as
- 45:10Speaker 9: a performer. And possibly no song hits that balance as
- 45:14Speaker 9: well as that.
- 45:15Speaker 10: Version of When Doves Cry by Damien Rice.
- 45:18Speaker 27: Purple Rain reminds me of another soundtrack that's also a favorite.
- 45:23Speaker 27: I've got to say the Romeo and Juliet, the Baz
- 45:26Speaker 27: Luhrmann one, because they have that kid Quentin Tarver who
- 45:29Speaker 27: comes in and does When Doves Cry with the really gospel,
- 45:34Speaker 27: churchy version.
- 45:35Speaker 10: It's just fantastic.
- 45:37Speaker 9: And yes, I want to acknowledge the Quentin Tarver version
- 45:39Speaker 9: on the Romeo plus Juliet soundtrack.
- 45:41Speaker 10: It is great as well.
- 45:43Speaker 9: In fact, I specifically didn't work it in because I've
- 45:46Speaker 9: already played that one. Once again, back on the very
- 45:49Speaker 9: first episode of Attack of the Killer soundtrack, I worked
- 45:52Speaker 9: that one in there. So go check that one out there,
- 45:54Speaker 9: along with a bunch.
- 45:55Speaker 10: Of other great songs from that very first episode.
- 45:59Speaker 7: Want some music for your ears? Doo-Wop Shop makes it
- 46:02Speaker 7: easy to rent for any event, business meeting, or special occasion.
- 46:06Speaker 7: From PA systems to karaoke machines to just about anything
- 46:08Speaker 7: that makes noise, you can rent it from the Doo-Wop Shop.
- 46:11Speaker 7: In Louisville, find them either at their Highland store at
- 46:14Speaker 7: 1587 Bardstown Road or in the East End at 2915
- 46:18Speaker 7: South Hurstburn Parkway. And look for them online at DooWopShop.com.
- 46:22Speaker 7: Doo-Wop Shop. We're serious about music.
- 46:27Speaker 27: We was hitchhiking down a long and lonesome road.
- 46:34Speaker 10: All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon in
- 46:40Speaker 10: the middle of the.
- 46:41Speaker 6: Road and he said hey this is KG of Tenacious
- 46:46Speaker 6: D and you're listening to Movie Meltdown with Brian oh.
- 46:51Speaker 9: Yeah Now in the shadow of that last track, it
- 47:03Speaker 9: would be hard for someone to do something similar, but
- 47:06Speaker 9: equally different and impressive.
- 47:09Speaker 10: And yet I give you Kush. I don't know much
- 47:12Speaker 10: about the band.
- 47:13Speaker 9: In fact, there are several different bands out there with
- 47:15Speaker 9: that or a similar version of that name. So I'm
- 47:18Speaker 9: not going to claim anything more than in digging around
- 47:20Speaker 9: through a lot of other covers out there. And believe me,
- 47:23Speaker 9: there are several different dance club mix kind of versions
- 47:27Speaker 9: out there like this one going on behind me right now.
- 47:30Speaker 9: But none of those really stood out. And then I
- 47:33Speaker 9: came across this version from a band listed as Kush.
- 47:37Speaker 9: That's all I know, but that's all I need to know.
- 47:40Speaker 9: It's a different take on the original, but it's pretty great.
- 47:43Speaker 10: And here's our friend Carly with an intro. Is that
- 47:46Speaker 10: your favorite track on the album, Purple Rain?
- 47:48Speaker 13: No, actually.
- 47:51Speaker 33: Let's see.
- 47:52Speaker 29: I'm kind of a big fan of I Would Die
- 47:55Speaker 29: For You. I'm pretty into that.
- 48:15Speaker 4: I'm not a woman, I'm not a man I'm something
- 48:20Speaker 4: that you never understand Never beat you, I'll never lie
- 48:27Speaker 4: And if you leave her I'll forgive you by and
- 48:30Speaker 4: by Yeah, you, I would die for you Darling, if.
- 48:37Speaker 1: You want me to Yeah, you, I would die for
- 48:42Speaker 1: you Not your lover, not your.
- 48:49Speaker 17: Friend I'm something that you'll never comprehend.
- 48:54Speaker 1: No need to worry, no need to.
- 48:57Speaker 17: Cry I'm your Messiah and you're the reason why Yeah, you,
- 49:04Speaker 17: I would die.
- 49:06Speaker 3: For you Darling, if.
- 49:08Speaker 17: You want me to Yeah, you, I would die for.
- 49:13Speaker 3: You Thank you. fire when you are cold.
- 49:40Speaker 4: I make you happy when you are sad. I make
- 49:44Speaker 4: you good when you are bad. I'm not a human,
- 49:50Speaker 4: I'm a dove. I'm your conscience, I'm love.
- 49:56Speaker 17: All, all, all I really need is to know that
- 49:59Speaker 17: you love me. I would die for you Darling if
- 50:08Speaker 17: you want me to, yeah you I would die for
- 50:15Speaker 17: you Darling, if you want.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Me to Yeah, you.
- 50:20Speaker 17: I would die for you Oh, darling, if you want
- 50:25Speaker 17: me to Baby, you.
- 50:28Speaker 1: I would die for.
- 50:30Speaker 3: You Yeah, you I.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Would die for you.
- 50:40Speaker 4: If you want me to, darling, you.
- 50:44Speaker 1: I would die for.
- 50:45Speaker 4: You Yeah, you I would die for you Darling, if
- 50:55Speaker 4: you want me to, baby, you.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I would die for you.
- 51:09Speaker 9: Alright, so we're here with the organizer of this Purple
- 51:12Speaker 9: Rain themed event.
- 51:14Speaker 10: Where did you get this specific idea?
- 51:17Speaker 25: Well, I've been a fan of Prince for literally 30 years.
- 51:23Speaker 25: And it is the 30 year anniversary of the film.
- 51:25Speaker 25: I recall seeing it in middle school, and it really
- 51:29Speaker 25: pretty much blew my suburban mind. And I've loved Prince
- 51:33Speaker 25: ever since. I'm a DJ for Art FM, and I've
- 51:37Speaker 25: been doing that for about a year. And I saw
- 51:39Speaker 25: it as a really great way to benefit Art FM
- 51:42Speaker 25: as a fundraiser. So I approached Tim Barnes, who is
- 51:45Speaker 25: the program director of Art FM, as well as the
- 51:48Speaker 25: owner of Dreamland, and asked him if we could show
- 51:50Speaker 25: the film here. And it evolved from there.
- 51:53Speaker 7: Very cool.
- 51:54Speaker 10: And what is your song of choice off this monumental soundtrack?
- 51:57Speaker 10: What's your favorite?
- 51:59Speaker 25: I would have to say I Would Die For You.
- 52:02Speaker 25: I'm torn between that and Baby I'm A Star. But
- 52:04Speaker 25: then again, Purple Rain is pretty great too.
- 52:07Speaker 9: And yes, that was in fact the host of the
- 52:09Speaker 9: live event, Allison, throwing around a little Prince love.
- 52:12Speaker 10: Now that's a weird phrase.
- 52:14Speaker 9: Anyway, in Volume 1, you heard me say that Mariah
- 52:17Speaker 9: is arguably the biggest or at least the most mainstream
- 52:20Speaker 9: artist to have covered a Prince song from Purple Rain.
- 52:23Speaker 9: But I'd say our next entry outranks her, at least
- 52:25Speaker 9: in the annals of rock and roll. And to get
- 52:28Speaker 9: us into it, we have Rick with another personal backstory
- 52:30Speaker 9: of the album, the movie, and the next song.
- 52:33Speaker 3: Hey Brian, it's Rick.
- 52:52Speaker 20: The good times had by all.
- 52:54Speaker 10: Definitely. What was your favorite track on the album? Oh,
- 52:58Speaker 10: Baby I'm a Star.
- 52:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:01Speaker 10: Do you have.
- 53:01Speaker 20: I don't know it now, but.
- 53:04Speaker 9: Do you have specific fond memories of that song?
- 53:06Speaker 20: Well, the whole album in general. I can remember, you know,
- 53:10Speaker 20: Showcase Cinemas, when it first premiered, my friend Renee and I,
- 53:16Speaker 20: no longer with us, bless her heart, but snuck in
- 53:19Speaker 20: a 12-pack, sat there, watched the whole movie, and We
- 53:22Speaker 20: had to be strategic about popping a top of opening
- 53:26Speaker 20: the beer. It wasn't allowed, but great show, great time.
- 53:31Speaker 7: Oh.
- 53:32Speaker 10: Luckily, there's a lot of loud music and songs. You
- 53:35Speaker 10: can cover up the opening.
- 54:18Speaker 13: Hey, look me over.
- 54:22Speaker 21: Tell me, do you like what you see?
- 54:24Speaker 13: Hey, I ain't got no money. Honey, I'm rich with personality.
- 54:31Speaker 30: Hey, hey.
- 54:35Speaker 3: Check it all out Check it all out Baby, I know.
- 54:38Speaker 17: What it's all about Before the night is through You
- 54:42Speaker 17: will see my point of view Even if I have
- 54:46Speaker 17: to scream.
- 54:46Speaker 3: And shout Baby, I'm a star.
- 54:51Speaker 17: You might not know it now But baby, you'll find
- 54:55Speaker 17: out I'm a star And I wanna stop Until I reach.
- 55:02Speaker 16: The top Sing it!
- 55:03Speaker 13: We are Hey, take a listen.
- 55:10Speaker 8: Tell me, do you like what you did?
- 55:12Speaker 17: If it don't turn you on, just say the word
- 55:16Speaker 17: and I'm gone.
- 55:17Speaker 10: Honey, I know there ain't nothing wrong with your ears.
- 55:21Speaker 3: Hey, check it out.
- 55:25Speaker 21: Better look now, I guess it might be too late.
- 55:28Speaker 13: My look's gonna change tonight.
- 55:30Speaker 21: There's gotta be a better life.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Take a picture, honey. I ain't.
- 55:39Speaker 6: You might not.
- 55:40Speaker 3: Know it now, but baby, you'll find out I'm a star.
- 55:45Speaker 10: Oh, I don't want to.
- 55:48Speaker 3: Stop till I reach the top.
- 55:55Speaker 13: We are the stars.
- 55:56Speaker 3: Everybody say, nothing comes too easy.
- 55:58Speaker 21: When you got it, baby, nothing comes too hard.
- 56:00Speaker 3: You see what I'm all about?
- 56:02Speaker 32: I got a dream and a shot.
- 56:05Speaker 3: Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby.
- 56:16Speaker 29: Oh, you might not know it now.
- 56:18Speaker 10: Maybe you'll find out.
- 56:59Speaker 6: Maybe you'll find.
- 57:02Speaker 3: Out I'm a star. I don't want to stop.
- 57:13Speaker 13: You don't need to stop.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Uh-huh. You got it?
- 57:14Speaker 30: Is that it?
- 57:15Speaker 3: We're going to wind it up? Hey, baby. Oh, honey.
- 57:21Speaker 16: Oh, oh.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Star. Star.
- 57:27Speaker 9: Yes, that was in fact Tina Turner covering Baby I'm
- 57:30Speaker 9: a Star. Again, there's a pretty straightforward message in those lyrics,
- 57:33Speaker 9: and an icon like Tina certainly knows how to own
- 57:36Speaker 9: up to that.
- 57:36Speaker 7: What a.
- 57:41Speaker 11: Weird record.
- 57:42Speaker 9: It's a lot of different stages. Again, I think that
- 57:46Speaker 9: was kind of showcasing him at that point of how
- 57:49Speaker 9: that wide array of stuff that he actually can do,
- 57:52Speaker 9: that you have these guitar solos that kind of put
- 57:55Speaker 9: metal guys to shame. And then like later he's doing
- 57:58Speaker 9: a cheesy duet moment. And then later he's doing stuff
- 58:01Speaker 9: that's just total funk. And so he's just got such
- 58:05Speaker 9: a wide.
- 58:06Speaker 24: He's a renaissance man. He's not a one trick pony.
- 58:09Speaker 24: And then that really, I feel like that carries over
- 58:12Speaker 24: into his whole persona. You know, you think you've got
- 58:14Speaker 24: them all summed up with being like effeminate and squealing
- 58:18Speaker 24: and looking great and looking better in skinny jeans than
- 58:21Speaker 24: any lady does. You know, but then he's, like, riding
- 58:23Speaker 24: on his motorcycle and getting, like, passionately angry. And, you know,
- 58:27Speaker 24: he's just, he's a really, he's a complex character, Brian.
- 58:31Speaker 24: He's a complex man.
- 58:33Speaker 10: That's what those hissy fits mean.
- 58:34Speaker 21: That's what the, yeah.
- 58:36Speaker 13: No, they're manly.
- 58:37Speaker 21: They're not hissy fits.
- 58:37Speaker 10: A few of them are kind of hissy fits.
- 58:40Speaker 16: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:41Speaker 13: B-I-T-C-H.
- 58:43Speaker 26: Brian, I wish that you could see, I wish that
- 58:45Speaker 26: you could tell the folks how awesome it looks inside
- 58:49Speaker 26: here right now.
- 58:49Speaker 11: Show the listeners.
- 58:50Speaker 30: Yeah.
- 58:51Speaker 11: It's very, very fucking cool.
- 58:53Speaker 13: Oh, shit.
- 58:54Speaker 21: No, he said it's all good. F-word's good.
- 58:55Speaker 24: Yeah, the decoration inside is amazing. There are Prince posters.
- 58:59Speaker 24: He is looking very sexy in his man thong.
- 59:04Speaker 26: I'm not sure if you guys know, which record did
- 59:08Speaker 26: that come in, that famous one?
- 59:09Speaker 11: Where he's in the shower like this in his man panties?
- 59:13Speaker 10: That one's really old. I think that was even pre-' 99,
- 59:15Speaker 10: wasn't it?
- 59:18Speaker 27: Maybe.
- 59:18Speaker 10: It's like, what is that one, the one right before that?
- 59:21Speaker 10: I think Controversy, wasn't it?
- 59:22Speaker 11: Controversy.
- 59:24Speaker 7: Sweet.
- 59:24Speaker 9: Cause that was the first one that feels like he
- 59:26Speaker 9: got like a pretty decent budget too.
- 59:28Speaker 10: Like you can see like at that point he started
- 59:30Speaker 10: with it.
- 59:30Speaker 9: Cause those early ones he's like probably in his house doing,
- 59:33Speaker 9: I mean, he plays every instrument on those early albums
- 59:36Speaker 9: and like he's recording it himself.
- 59:37Speaker 10: He's editing. So it's like, it feels like controversy is.
- 59:40Speaker 9: The first one where it feels like he probably got
- 59:42Speaker 9: a real studio and they threw a little money at him.
- 59:44Speaker 10: So they probably paid for that really weird photo session.
- 59:47Speaker 9: Can you only imagine the photo session that was, And they're.
- 59:50Speaker 11: Like, are you ready?
- 59:51Speaker 10: Are you sure?
- 59:52Speaker 21: Are you ready?
- 59:54Speaker 10: Do I have to take? All right, fine. This better
- 59:58Speaker 10: be cash. I'm not taking a check from you, buddy.
- 1:00:00Speaker 26: Well, my point is that's like on the wall right
- 1:00:06Speaker 26: when you walk into the door here.
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: See, but next to it is the Purple Rain, like
- 1:00:11Speaker 9: the poster. It's not like it's the fancy one sheet.
- 1:00:13Speaker 9: It's like the one that you bought at Spencer's Gifts
- 1:00:16Speaker 9: that I probably bought at Spencer's Gifts.
- 1:00:18Speaker 32: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:19Speaker 10: It's him with that bologna on the motorcycle. Yeah, it's
- 1:00:22Speaker 10: pretty awesome.
- 1:00:23Speaker 21: It's quintessential.
- 1:00:24Speaker 11: It's pretty awesome.
- 1:00:25Speaker 9: You need it to be a 12-year-old in 1985.
- 1:00:27Speaker 10: I just think.
- 1:00:32Speaker 26: It's just super interesting. The record, sonically, is just so
- 1:00:37Speaker 26: weird and cool. I was around in 1984, but definitely wasn't... picking.
- 1:00:48Speaker 11: Apart the tracks of Purple Rain yet.
- 1:00:53Speaker 10: You've spent every day since then doing it.
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:00:55Speaker 26: It's just so weird and cool. I imagine people didn't
- 1:01:00Speaker 26: know what you know. I imagine it really blowing minds
- 1:01:03Speaker 26: when it came out.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Dude, I serve a society by rocking, okay?
- 1:01:07Speaker 11: I'm out there on the front lines liberating people with
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: my music.
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: Yes, that was a little more Prince Talk with Sarah
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: and Jackson. A big thank you to them. They were
- 1:01:14Speaker 9: a lot of fun to hang out with that night.
- 1:01:16Speaker 10: Okay, so we're.
- 1:01:16Speaker 9: Closing in on the end of the album here. But first,
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: I wanted to head back to our segment with Carly.
- 1:01:21Speaker 9: She actually performed her own version of the closing track,
- 1:01:24Speaker 9: and I talked to her just a few minutes afterward.
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: So I wanted to get her take on performing such
- 1:01:29Speaker 9: a milestone in music history.
- 1:01:33Speaker 10: What was your name? Carly Johnson. And you just did
- 1:01:39Speaker 10: Purple Rain.
- 1:01:39Speaker 9: I guess the real question is, 30 years later, how is.
- 1:01:42Speaker 10: It that it's still that powerful a song?
- 1:01:45Speaker 13: Man, I don't know.
- 1:01:46Speaker 29: I think you're going to have to ask Prince that question.
- 1:01:48Speaker 29: That guy is serious with his same chords over and
- 1:01:52Speaker 29: over again, but still epic, epic song. I was a
- 1:01:55Speaker 29: little nervous about doing it with just a guitar player
- 1:01:58Speaker 29: and not having the full gospel singers in the background
- 1:02:01Speaker 29: and the drums and bass and whatnot.
- 1:02:05Speaker 13: So.
- 1:02:05Speaker 29: I was pretty intimidated myself, but it was an honor
- 1:02:08Speaker 29: to do it.
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: Prince is an intimidating guy. He's way too talented for
- 1:02:13Speaker 9: any human being.
- 1:02:14Speaker 29: Absolutely, and if you've seen him on Arsenio lately, which
- 1:02:17Speaker 29: is the last few days, that will also confirm exactly
- 1:02:20Speaker 29: what you just said.
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: And he might not be a human being because he
- 1:02:23Speaker 9: refuses to age 30 years later.
- 1:02:26Speaker 10: That's very true.
- 1:02:27Speaker 29: I firmly believe he is a musical alien.
- 1:02:30Speaker 10: May very well be, actually.
- 1:02:32Speaker 21: I completely agree with that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 9: I've kind of been asking everybody what their first exposure
- 1:02:37Speaker 9: to Prince was, what your first Prince memory was.
- 1:02:40Speaker 21: That's a tough one.
- 1:02:41Speaker 29: Honestly, I would have to say, so I'm turning 30 in.
- 1:02:47Speaker 10: A couple weeks. Also your Pearl anniversary.
- 1:02:50Speaker 29: So it is also my Purple Rain anniversary. So obviously
- 1:02:53Speaker 29: I didn't see it when it came out. I was
- 1:02:55Speaker 29: a twinkle in someone's eye or I just popped out.
- 1:02:57Speaker 29: But honestly, I think my biggest memory of Prince is
- 1:03:02Speaker 29: at some point when I was much younger. hearing about
- 1:03:05Speaker 29: the controversy about him switching his name to a symbol.
- 1:03:09Speaker 29: And then I kind of delved a little deeper to
- 1:03:12Speaker 29: find out who the hell they were talking about. And
- 1:03:14Speaker 29: then I was like, oh, well, he could kind of
- 1:03:16Speaker 29: get away with that.
- 1:03:18Speaker 10: He's an artist.
- 1:03:20Speaker 21: Yes, he is.
- 1:03:21Speaker 11: Formerly known as.
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: However, he came to his senses.
- 1:03:24Speaker 13: I never meant to cause you any sorrow. I never
- 1:03:31Speaker 13: meant to cause you any pain.
- 1:03:33Speaker 10: Alright, this is it.
- 1:03:34Speaker 9: We're going to round things out here, just like the
- 1:03:37Speaker 9: soundtrack does, with THE Monster Ballad. And as I mentioned
- 1:03:41Speaker 9: along the way, there were a few artists and covers
- 1:03:43Speaker 9: that I thought of right off the bat that I
- 1:03:45Speaker 9: knew I wanted to include. But this is the one
- 1:03:48Speaker 9: that goes back the furthest. Years ago, I ran across
- 1:03:51Speaker 9: a live version of Purple Rain done by Martin Sexton.
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: Now I think I was already familiar with him, probably
- 1:03:57Speaker 9: from his song and album Black Sheep, but I really
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: remember taking to his cover of the Imposing Prince song.
- 1:04:03Speaker 9: I even added it to a mix CD I was
- 1:04:04Speaker 9: making at the time, and I drove around listening to
- 1:04:07Speaker 9: that thing for years. It really stuck with me. And
- 1:04:10Speaker 9: even though I specifically went out of my way on
- 1:04:13Speaker 9: all the other songs I've chosen to dig up studio
- 1:04:16Speaker 9: versions of the songs. I mean, tons of people out
- 1:04:18Speaker 9: there have probably thrown a Prince cover in their lineup
- 1:04:20Speaker 9: at some point. I was trying to track down people
- 1:04:23Speaker 9: who were serious enough to go out of their way
- 1:04:25Speaker 9: to record their versions in a studio. But when it
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: came time to round out this year-long, two-volume journey... I
- 1:04:33Speaker 9: thought Martin was the way to do it. And technically,
- 1:04:36Speaker 9: it is from one of his official releases, just a
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: live release. It's from his 2008 album, Solo, we get
- 1:04:42Speaker 9: a live version that's slightly different than the one I
- 1:04:45Speaker 9: heard years back, but equally as impressive. And actually, it's
- 1:04:49Speaker 9: sort of fitting that this song is the one track
- 1:04:52Speaker 9: with a live audience. I think this song, more than
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: any on the soundtrack, allows the performer to connect with
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: the audience. Go to any live show and do a
- 1:05:01Speaker 9: decent version of the song, and I bet everybody in
- 1:05:04Speaker 9: the room will react. Some of them may start off
- 1:05:06Speaker 9: rolling their eyes, but I bet before the song is over,
- 1:05:09Speaker 9: they'll be fighting the urge to sing along. It's an anthem,
- 1:05:12Speaker 9: not just for that generation in 1984, but for everyone
- 1:05:16Speaker 9: who's discovered that soundtrack since then. It continues to be
- 1:05:19Speaker 9: just that, an anthem, even 30 years later. So thank
- 1:05:24Speaker 9: you to all of you for coming along with me
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: on this musical odyssey through the last three decades, and
- 1:05:29Speaker 9: thank you to everyone who talked with me over the
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: last year. I was glad to get a chance to
- 1:05:33Speaker 9: share in your memories and have you be part of
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: these episodes.
- 1:05:37Speaker 10: It's been a lot of.
- 1:05:37Speaker 9: Fun, and I look forward to putting together more interesting
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: conglomerations of music in the coming year. So with that,
- 1:05:43Speaker 9: I will remind you, Get a Life will provide an
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: epic soundtrack.
- 1:05:51Speaker 30: I never meant to cause you any sorrow Never gonna
- 1:06:06Speaker 30: cause you any pain Only wanna one time see you
- 1:06:12Speaker 30: laughing Only wanna see you laughing in.
- 1:06:18Speaker 13: The purple rain.
- 1:06:20Speaker 30: Purple rain, purple rain Purple.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Rain, purple rain.
- 1:06:32Speaker 30: Purple rain, purple.
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: Rain Only wanna see you laughing in the purple rain
- 1:06:46Speaker 8: Only wanna be your weekend lover.
- 1:06:52Speaker 30: Only wanna be some.
- 1:06:53Speaker 33: Kind of friend Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:01Speaker 30: The woman I could never steal you from another It's
- 1:07:07Speaker 30: such a shame that our friendship had to end Purple rain,
- 1:07:13Speaker 30: purple rain.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: Purple rain, purple.
- 1:07:20Speaker 30: Rain Purple rain, purple rain.
- 1:07:32Speaker 13: The only one.
- 1:07:33Speaker 30: To see you laughing in the purple rain.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Honey, I know, I know that these times are changing.
- 1:07:46Speaker 17: And I know it's time we all reach out for
- 1:07:49Speaker 17: something new, and.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: That'd be you too.
- 1:07:53Speaker 10: You say you want.
- 1:07:55Speaker 13: A leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind.
- 1:07:58Speaker 30: Maybe we ought to close it.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: And let us guide you.
- 1:08:02Speaker 30: Through the purple rain, purple rain, purple.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Purple rain, purple.
- 1:08:19Speaker 33: Rain Only wanna see you bathing in the purple rain.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: Guitar solo Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:09:59Speaker 30: I never meant to cause you any sorrow. I never
- 1:10:05Speaker 30: meant to cause you any pain.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: All I ever wanted was to see you laughing in
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: the pouring rain. In the pouring rain. It's pouring rain
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: and I'm tired. It's cold and rain outside, but I
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: don't mind. All I ever wanted was to see you.
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: All I ever wanted was to see you. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, yeah. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Thank you, brothers and sisters.
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
- 1:11:18Speaker 10: Peace and love be with us all. Thank you.
- 1:11:38Speaker 21: Wow, impressive. Prince would be proud.
- 1:11:41Speaker 10: Prince would be proud, I think.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Don't think anyone expected that dramatic of an end to
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: the show.
- 1:11:48Speaker 10: So it was fantastic.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: And plus, tonight the purple rain. The sky was kind
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: of purple and this crazy storm, lightning going everywhere.
- 1:11:55Speaker 18: I feel like it was on, I don't remember if
- 1:11:57Speaker 18: I saw it in the theater or if I saw it.
- 1:11:59Speaker 9: I think mine was cable and it felt really strange. Yeah,
- 1:12:04Speaker 9: it's such a weird.
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: I believe it was Little Red Corvette.
- 1:12:13Speaker 21: It's pretty sexy.
- 1:12:15Speaker 24: You know, most movies, most feature length motion pictures you're
- 1:12:18Speaker 24: going to see are like so, are often really like Hollywoodized,
- 1:12:22Speaker 24: you know, so it's like this band that, you know,
- 1:12:25Speaker 24: it's like these actors pretending to play guitars, you know,
- 1:12:27Speaker 24: maybe like it's just like a little more canned, you know.
- 1:12:30Speaker 10: Wait, Zac Efron can't play guitar?
- 1:12:32Speaker 21: Wait, ouch, vision shattered.
- 1:12:34Speaker 24: Actually, we don't know.
- 1:12:35Speaker 21: Yeah, I have no idea.
- 1:12:37Speaker 10: All right, I'll get Zac on the phone.
- 1:12:38Speaker 22: Hold on.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: Did you see Prince tonight?
- 1:12:42Speaker 10: Like mystically in the universe. Wasn't he here? There was someone.
- 1:12:48Speaker 10: He looked a lot like Prince.
- 1:12:51Speaker 13: I think it was him.
- 1:12:52Speaker 10: I think he was here. I'm pretty sure. The spirit
- 1:12:54Speaker 10: of Prince is with us all.
- 1:12:56Speaker 25: All the time.
- 1:12:57Speaker 13: Always. Wherever we go.
