Transcript
- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, and across the interwebs.
- 0:15Tyler Johnson: From me is.
- 0:16Tad Eggleston: That didn't come through at all.
- 0:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it still didn't. Let me do it for you.
- 0:23Tyler Johnson: Okay, there we go.
- 0:25Tyler Johnson: That was better. I have, for our listeners, I have earbuds in right now, and my.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: They probably have their own noise canceling, too, so…
- 0:35Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah.
- 0:36Tad Eggleston: And there's a certain amount of noise cancelling in…
- 0:40Tad Eggleston: in Zoom, and now Tyler's gone, so I'm just filling space while Tyler's gone. He just dropped out on me. This is episode 252 of…
- 0:52Tad Eggleston: of, 22 panels, which will hopefully continue to,
- 0:58Tad Eggleston: To be… oh, Tyler's back, fantastic.
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: So we don't even have to pause anything, much less edit anything.
- 1:06Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: Continue into news of note now, with Tyler back.
- 1:10Tyler Johnson: Just one second. I'm back. Here's what happened. Normally, because you said noise canceling, so I was like, oh, I should see if that's on or off. So I hit…
- 1:20Tad Eggleston: But that's for the… that's for the… the… like, you can't turn off the noise canceling for the microphone, you can only turn it off for the…
- 1:29Tyler Johnson: Yes, and what happened is, since I'm connected to a Zoom call right now, the controls of my earbuds have changed. This one, this disconnected me from you.
- 1:40Tyler Johnson: When I went tap, 10…
- 1:42Tad Eggleston: with your headphone. Yep.
- 1:44Tyler Johnson: When I tapped it, that's when it hung up on you. I was like, oh, that was the wrong move.
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: So, so,
- 1:52Tad Eggleston: a couple of pieces of comics news, one of which I didn't know was comics news until earlier today.
- 2:00Tad Eggleston: 2000AD's printer went out of business, which meant that this week's 2000AD didn't actually go out.
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: They're hoping to be back on schedule next week, but that's gotta be interesting when, like.
- 2:14Tad Eggleston: The printer that makes your books just suddenly shutters, and you don't get…
- 2:21Tyler Johnson: No warning, just like… See, that's really crappy, because, like, guys, like, 2000AD, you know, they're counting on their books every month, and without at least a month's notice…
- 2:32Tad Eggleston: weekly.
- 2:33Tyler Johnson: You got a truth.
- 2:34Tad Eggleston: is weekly.
- 2:35Tyler Johnson: Weekly, so…
- 2:36Tad Eggleston: So I don't know how far in advance they're able to print those.
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah, it's gotta be interesting when they suddenly go out of business and they gotta scramble.
- 2:46Tad Eggleston: Next piece of news, and the one that I didn't know was comics-related until I was today years old.
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: Feminist icon and founder of Ms. Magazine, Gloria Steinem, passed away this week.
- 3:01Tad Eggleston: I'd kinda known that she was a vocal admirer of Wonder Woman.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: I did see an article today that, that, like, she may have been involved in
- 3:14Tad Eggleston: there was a brief period, in part because of the feminist movement, where Wonder Woman didn't have her superpowers?
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: They'd made her into, like, liberated woman of the era.
- 3:27Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay.
- 3:28Tad Eggleston: Apparently, it was, at least in part, Gloria Steinem saying that, like.
- 3:34Tad Eggleston: the original Howard's Wonder Woman is, is like…
- 3:39Tad Eggleston: A powerful figure that… that… that brought the powers back.
- 3:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 3:45Tad Eggleston: Also, the very first issue of Ms. Magazine had Wonder Woman featured on the cover.
- 3:53Tad Eggleston: But what I discovered TODAY, it was today years old.
- 3:58Tad Eggleston: When I discovered that she was the first
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: assistant to Harvey Kurtzman on Help Magazine.
- 4:08Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 4:08Tad Eggleston: And when she left, Terry Gilliam took over.
- 4:13Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 4:16Tyler Johnson: And then…
- 4:17Tad Eggleston: Talk about insane… insane…
- 4:21Tyler Johnson: Pedigree.
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: Well, just, like, those are your assistants?
- 4:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 4:26Tad Eggleston: Gloria Steinem, and then Terry Gilliam?
- 4:28Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 4:29Tad Eggleston: And he hired Robert Crum. Unfortunately, by the time Crum got there, The magazine had been canceled.
- 4:37Tyler Johnson: Yay.
- 4:38Tyler Johnson: So, I gotta tell you a funny Robert Crum story. Sure. I… I ordered one of his books in for my store.
- 4:47Tyler Johnson: And I think it was called, like, The Beauty and Art of Our Crumb, okay? And I put it on the shelf, and all was.
- 4:55Tad Eggleston: I hope on a high shelf?
- 4:58Tyler Johnson: Well… We're getting there. I, I,
- 5:06Tyler Johnson: It came… well, it came in plastic, I unplasticed it, put it on the shelf, okay? No, not a high shelf.
- 5:15Tyler Johnson: And then a fan of, Robert's work found the book and said, hey.
- 5:22Tyler Johnson: are you sure you want this out here? And I said, yeah, I mean, I know his work's kind of racy, but it's not that.
- 5:30Tyler Johnson: that bad.
- 5:32Tyler Johnson: And he said, okay, and then he handed me the book. He said, you should look. And that book was more racy than other R-Crum stuff.
- 5:43Tyler Johnson: And I… I now have it in my glass case, and if you ask, I will get it out for you.
- 5:51Tad Eggleston: I mean, we were talking about Mark Russell and Shannon Wheeler's Got Is Disappointed in You off-air. Yeah, yeah. Did you know that Robert Crum.
- 6:02Tad Eggleston: did an incredibly faithful adaptation of the book of Genesis.
- 6:07Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 6:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 6:09Tyler Johnson: That's cool.
- 6:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 6:12Tyler Johnson: That's really…
- 6:13Tad Eggleston: They're Bible in comics form. Genesis is all crumb. Crumb did Genesis one.
- 6:18Tyler Johnson: Check that out.
- 6:19Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 6:19Tyler Johnson: But yeah, so I, the beauty and art, or art and beauty of, our crumb is now in my case.
- 6:26Tyler Johnson: I… I am completely on board with still selling it, knowing how… Right.
- 6:31Tad Eggleston: Right. I wouldn't expect you not to want to sell it, but…
- 6:35Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 6:36Tad Eggleston: Having it in reach of the 5-year-olds is a different thing.
- 6:39Tyler Johnson: But here's the thing, that book is pretty pornographic, so…
- 6:42Tad Eggleston: I believe it.
- 6:44Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: I believe it. Like, loving rockets, particularly Beto stuff, shouldn't necessarily be on a…
- 6:53Tad Eggleston: on a low shelf, and if you ever get birdland in.
- 6:57Tad Eggleston: definitely shouldn't be on a low shelf. Yup.
- 7:03Tyler Johnson: So, what kind of week has it been, Tad?
- 7:07Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been? It seems like the new strategy from the White House is, hey, look over there!
- 7:17Tyler Johnson: Yell…
- 7:18Tad Eggleston: Anyway, new to order this month!
- 7:20Tyler Johnson: You're just gonna go. Anyway… You just did a hey look over there to me.
- 7:25Tad Eggleston: I mean, doesn't that feel like how it is lately?
- 7:28Tyler Johnson: Yes, it is, yeah.
- 7:31Tad Eggleston: Initial orders are due on September 24th.
- 7:36Tad Eggleston: Ec Artists from the Abyss, number 1. This looks super cool.
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: And the first one will feature Chris Condon and Charlie Adlard. From the depths of the endless abyss.
- 7:52Tad Eggleston: EC Comics and Oni Press proudly present the first in a new series of one-shot celebrations, spotlighting the boldest and bloodiest talents from EC's new class of caustic cartoonists. Take it from us, they really put the ill in Illustrator.
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: Our first victim? Comics legend and Eiser Award-winning artist Charlie Adlard.
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: For the first time between two covers, Survey Adler's punishing portfolio of uninvited resurrections, souls sold cheap, and spectacular sadistic horrors as illustrated in the immortal EC Comics Manor.
- 8:28Tad Eggleston: With lots of
- 8:29Tad Eggleston: Lots and lots of red, naturally. Plus, a brand new, never-before-told tale, reuniting Adlard with acclaimed writer and fellow survivor of the Tormentor's Rack.
- 8:42Tad Eggleston: Chris Condon. This is sure to be the most murderous mag you'll read all winter. Shovel and lime not included.
- 8:51Tad Eggleston: You know, I…
- 8:53Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna buy these anyway, but this one specifically, I'm very excited about.
- 8:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, what it sounds like is that most of it's reprinting stories from other recent EC comics, but collected by the artist, so that's kind of cool.
- 9:10Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and Charlie.
- 9:10Tad Eggleston: And I love that they're also giving you a new story.
- 9:14Tad Eggleston: So, I'm looking forward to this. There are definitely a number of artists that have done a bunch of their EC stuff, so I hope that we, like, get to see a David Lapham one, or a Cano one, that sort of thing.
- 9:28Tyler Johnson: Well, I want to talk about Exquisite Corpses, Lone Gunman. I've been loving this series anyway.
- 9:36Tad Eggleston: I need to get ca- I need to get caught up.
- 9:38Tyler Johnson: So, yeah, I mean, imagine the world's most powerful people have a game, where assassins kill each other in an unsuspecting town, okay? So, and it's just crazy, like, the bets that are going on.
- 9:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's like… it's like every year, they have to decide who's gonna be in charge. Elon Musk…
- 10:00Tyler Johnson: But, yeah.
- 10:01Tad Eggleston: Okay, yeah, but Elon Musk, Sam Altman, mohammed bin Salman… Yeah.
- 10:11Tyler Johnson: It is…
- 10:12Tad Eggleston: Vladimir Putin, we're talking just the richest people in the world. We're not talking the people that are necessarily automatically assumed to be the most powerful people in the world. And the way they decide…
- 10:24Tad Eggleston: Is… they put serial killers in a town.
- 10:28Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 10:29Tad Eggleston: And have them fight it out.
- 10:31Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 10:32Tad Eggleston: This is just such the weirdest and most twisted and wonderful.
- 10:36Tyler Johnson: So, here's me up.
- 10:38Tyler Johnson: This is Lone Gunman by Porn Sag piece she showed Alberto Ponsicelli, Giordi Belair, from Image. In this can't-miss follow-up to the first Exquisite Corpses series, Laura and her fellow survivors, Xavi and Jason, have attempted to carve out an existence with her winnings.
- 10:59Tyler Johnson: Far away from the evil machinations of the 13 families. But, two years after the unfathomable events unleashed in their hometown, and Laura's game-winning performance as the last gunman, all that they did to survive still haunts them. Now the agency of the Golden Mask refuses to stay silent, and their lives are in danger once again. Final order cut off for

- 12:35Tad Eggleston: Snow become themselves hunted by a masked vigilante. A power struggle breaks out inside snow between the Deep State Old Guard and its death squad vanguard. Gladio Unit. Who is the masked vigilante calling themselves the dialectic? Postured as a Marxist force of history?
- 12:56Tad Eggleston: What is their relationship to the community's liberation?
- 13:00Tad Eggleston: And it's violent suppression by Snow, with powerful art by Italian superstar Antonio Fusso, No One Escapes the Dialectic is an unapologetic, provocative, and boundary-shattering new ongoing comic series for the age of permanent crisis.

- 24:09Tyler Johnson: Red Dude Patrol, I will agree.
- 24:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, and I, and I believe our all-planned is ongoing series, so, so, like…
- 24:18Tad Eggleston: A good trio of debuts there.
- 24:21Tad Eggleston: But my big… well, and also, like, the Weird Al book was… Solid.
- 24:27Tyler Johnson: I sold out of that almost instantly.
- 24:30Tad Eggleston: I would imagine.
- 24:31Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I ordered the, original cover and then the variant, kind of a lime green background with Clark and Bruce in Hawaiian shirts. That… both covers sold out.
- 24:44Tad Eggleston: Boom.
- 24:44Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 24:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:46Tad Eggleston: But the books I love the most this week, A Ghost Are Made of Angry Ghosts from Oliver Mertz and Alex Diotto. Did you read this?
- 24:55Tyler Johnson: No, but I know what it is.
- 24:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:58Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 24:58Tad Eggleston: This is… this is up your alley.
- 25:01Tad Eggleston: This is one that I've been…
- 25:02Tyler Johnson: It's my.
- 25:02Tad Eggleston: Read a few more times. It's got some very punk rock sensibilities, and…
- 25:08Tad Eggleston: it's just, like, weird in cool ways. Yeah.
- 25:14Tad Eggleston: I think the first time ever that I get to say I can see the influence, artistic influence, of four kids walking to a bank, and it's like… it's…
- 25:24Tad Eggleston: It's both amazing to me.
- 25:29Tad Eggleston: that it's the first time that I've really seen somebody who I felt like took a,
- 25:37Tad Eggleston: took… took influence from that, because it's such an amazing book, and I'm just so happy to see some of that vibe again, even though it's a completely different story from that.
- 25:48Tad Eggleston: And it actually uses a lot of art styles, depending on what it needs to do. I just… I like this book a lot.
- 25:55Tad Eggleston: I'm certain that I'll find an excuse to book club it, or reach out to Oliver, or… yeah. This… this will not be the only time that a ghost… our mate of angry ghosts gets talked about on…
- 26:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I mean, once I… once I read it, it's on my list, it just handles.
- 26:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:09Tyler Johnson: had, very little time. Right. But, your third one I have read, and it's amazing. Yeah.
- 26:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah. My second… my second one was really good, too. Superman the Stranger, number one from Wes Craig. Yep.
- 26:24Tad Eggleston: It both takes you back to, like, 20s, 30s era Superman, where his powers came on slower and weren't completely there.
- 26:36Tad Eggleston: And kind of tells a different story. In this version, he's, An orphan.
- 26:43Tad Eggleston: So he doesn't have the whole Ma Paw Kent thing. He grew up in an orphanage, and therefore has…
- 26:52Tad Eggleston: has… has some different sensibilities. I'm really interested to see what Wes winds up doing with it. I thought it was a really, really solid
- 27:01Tad Eggleston: debut, and as you said, Crowbound from Jeff… Jeff Lemire and Dustin Wen.
- 27:06Tad Eggleston: When they get together, it's always awesome.
- 27:10Tyler Johnson: Yeah. The cover was super cool with this book. The white was very stark, and the image in the middle
- 27:18Tyler Johnson: I don't know, it just is so eye-catching that even if you aren't a fan of Jeff Lemire, or,
- 27:26Tad Eggleston: How can you not be a fan of Jeff Lemire? How can you not be a fan of Dustin Wen? And really, how can you not be a fan of when they work together? I know, but if you're.
- 27:36Tyler Johnson: Just walking by it, I mean, it catches your eye.
- 27:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 27:40Tyler Johnson: Which I love. So, the one-piece raise, Tad, are you moving forward in this?
- 27:46Tad Eggleston: I didn't manage to move forward this week. I moved forward last week.
- 27:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah. They didn't move forward this week.
- 27:52Tad Eggleston: Okay. Have you read any more One Piece? Are you gonna suddenly jump in and say, yeah, I got to Chapter 800 this week?
- 28:00Tyler Johnson: No, but I will be reporting in soon about the One Piece trading card game.
- 28:06Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's right, they've got a trading card game coming up.
- 28:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and we happened to snag some for our store, and we'll see how well it sells, so…
- 28:14Tad Eggleston: Well, also, like, you should try to play it, and tell us if it's actually a…
- 28:21Tad Eggleston: A game that plays well, or if it's really just a collectible.
- 28:25Tyler Johnson: Oh, speaking of games, have you heard of the game Hero Clicks?
- 28:30Tad Eggleston: I know of Hero Clicks, I've never played.
- 28:33Tyler Johnson: So, we yesterday hosted the Midwest Regional Hero Clips Tournament at our shop.
- 28:39Tad Eggleston: Nice!
- 28:41Tyler Johnson: Which was a lot of fun. And then Lucas, my partner in the shop, he will be judging worlds this week, down in… or this week, this month, down in Tennessee.
- 28:52Tad Eggleston: Cool.
- 28:53Tyler Johnson: Yeah, so, anyway, HeroClicks is a little off the beat path, but, yeah, great responsibility this week.
- 29:00Tad Eggleston: We're gonna talk some Godzilla, and we're gonna talk some Image in the 20s, and you didn't bother to fill in your part, so I don't know what you're gonna be talking about.
- 29:08Tyler Johnson: Oh, I, I think,
- 29:10Tad Eggleston: You texted it to me, but I'd have to pull that up.
- 29:14Tad Eggleston: You didn't fill it into the rundown. It just says, fill nothing. Tyler, nothing.
- 29:20Tyler Johnson: Nothing.
- 29:21Tad Eggleston: Tad, Starship Godzilla, and Geiger.
- 29:25Tyler Johnson: Okay, well, here's the thing. For Godzilla, there was one that was more middle-aged graphic novel, and honestly, yeah, middle grade, sorry, middle-aged would be us.
- 29:42Tad Eggleston: They're pretty much all middle-aged, except for the one that's middle grade.
- 29:46Tyler Johnson: Yeah, middle grade, okay, so…
- 29:49Tyler Johnson: This one I liked because I'm kind of sick of seeing Godzilla in all of the contemporary stuff that I read, so I went towards Monster Island Summer Camp. It's an IDW, publication, sorry.
- 30:04Tyler Johnson: I think it's fun. Peaceful Art Camp gets just, you know, taken over.
- 30:10Tyler Johnson: but this corporate management kind of thing.
- 30:17Tyler Johnson: What did you… have you read it before?
- 30:20Tad Eggleston: I haven't. I haven't. That's why I was… I was waiting to hear from you, you to tell me about it, because… Okay, yeah. …cos it sounded cool.
- 30:28Tyler Johnson: Yep. So, like I said, it's an art camp that, you know, it's been kind of taken over this suspicious corporation kind of thing, and it's turned into an extreme sports, quote-unquote, like, nightmare. I mean, it's horrible.
- 30:45Tyler Johnson: But anyway,
- 30:51Tad Eggleston: Who are our… who's our art team on that?
- 30:54Tyler Johnson: Boy.
- 30:56Tad Eggleston: I'm trying to look it up.
- 30:59Tad Eggleston: Maybe I'll let you look it up while I… I did Starship Godzilla from…
- 31:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:03Tad Eggleston: and… and Oliver Ono.
- 31:06Tad Eggleston: And… and it definitely had…
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: Had that cool space smuggler, cowboy… You know, it's just like…
- 31:20Tad Eggleston: It's like, Godzilla was in it, and he was a space monster, and… and part of the… the… the…
- 31:30Tad Eggleston: Storyline was built around…
- 31:39Tad Eggleston: what's the word I'm looking… looking for? It was built around, both stealing and… and… and selling kaiju eggs.
- 31:48Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 31:48Tad Eggleston: But… but again, it was essentially… that was… that was, like, the backdrop
- 31:55Tad Eggleston: Well, and their ship is built like a Mechagodzilla. That was kind of cool.
- 32:00Tad Eggleston: But overall, that was the… You know what?
- 32:05Tad Eggleston: That's crazy!
- 32:08Tad Eggleston: We had the same artist for our two books.
- 32:11Tyler Johnson: Really? Ono? Yeah. Or whatever his name is?
- 32:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Oliver Ono was…
- 32:16Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 32:16Tad Eggleston: as well. Yep. Rosy night.
- 32:20Tyler Johnson: I had Rosie Naish, who'd you know?
- 32:22Tad Eggleston: I had Chris Gooch, who you know, because he did In Utero.
- 32:27Tyler Johnson: Yes, the, the, yeah.
- 32:31Tyler Johnson: It's gone.
- 32:32Tad Eggleston: So I enjoyed just the, you know, it's probably…
- 32:37Tad Eggleston: My story was probably… not quite officially YA, but could be YA, particularly because the protagonist was…
- 32:45Tad Eggleston: The youngest character in the book, and part of it was… like…
- 32:50Tad Eggleston: Her disappointment in reminding her elders that, like, morals are allowed to trump money, but also, like, learning that sometimes people disappoint you for…
- 33:04Tad Eggleston: exactly good reasons, but not bad re… you know, I mean… Yes.
- 33:08Tyler Johnson: I do know, yeah.
- 33:09Tad Eggleston: When you're a parent, when you have to take care of people, when you have responsibilities, you sometimes have different lines for…
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: What's okay and what's not.
- 33:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Wow.
- 33:23Tyler Johnson: Everything is fluid. I mean, it's all…
- 33:26Tad Eggleston: Which actually isn't… is… that was another theme in the… the Superman…
- 33:32Tad Eggleston: stranger… Yeah. …is, like, he's sitting there going, I want to make a difference, but am I really making that? Like…
- 33:41Tad Eggleston: Fighting criminals who are only trying to feed their families?
- 33:47Tyler Johnson: Right.
- 33:47Tyler Johnson: What was cool about the book that I read, Monster Island Summer Camp, was the…
- 33:53Tyler Johnson: idea that Godzilla, like, is like a baby kaiju, called Manila in this story, and…
- 34:01Tad Eggleston: Very cute on the cover.
- 34:03Tyler Johnson: Yes, I just really love…
- 34:06Tyler Johnson: the idea of bringing these kind of, universal monsters to younger people… Yeah. …that may not…
- 34:19Tyler Johnson: may not seek them out, because, well, these… these Godzilla movies have been around for 100 years.
- 34:27Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's another one that I've liked, but haven't… I read it when it came out, was there was the Godzilla Skater Die by Louis Joyce. Yeah.
- 34:37Tad Eggleston: That one was fun.
- 34:40Tad Eggleston: Have you… Godzilla Heist was fun.
- 34:43Tyler Johnson: You know, the last couple of years when they've been putting him out?
- 34:46Tad Eggleston: I've been reading… I have been sucked into way more of them than I thought I was gonna be.
- 34:52Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 34:53Tad Eggleston: I mean, I've been… I've been reading all of the Godzilla vs. America books, and I've been reading all of the Godzilla Monster Piece Theater books.
- 35:03Tad Eggleston: But, like…
- 35:06Tyler Johnson: Why is this…
- 35:07Tad Eggleston: Ethan, Ethan Parker and… I mean, I think it started because…
- 35:12Tad Eggleston: I think last year was Godzilla's 75th anniversary?
- 35:15Tyler Johnson: 75. Oh, I was off. I said.
- 35:18Tad Eggleston: I think.
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: No, because Godzilla is a distinctly posed… Hiroshima thing.
- 35:24Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 35:26Tad Eggleston: I think, actually, literally post- Hiroshima, because… I mean, post-World War II, obviously, but I think…
- 35:32Tad Eggleston: I think as the only country ever to have a nuclear bomb dropped on them.
- 35:40Tad Eggleston: Godzilla and, and, like, kind of the Kaijus…
- 35:45Tad Eggleston: We're an outshoot of that. And if somebody knows more, wants to correct me, or fill me in more.
- 35:51Tad Eggleston: you know, 22panelspodcast at gmail.com.
- 35:55Tyler Johnson: probably true.
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: But, but that, but that's, that's my… that's… that's always…
- 36:01Tad Eggleston: kind of read it, is that, that, like, Ew.
- 36:06Tad Eggleston: happens. I mean, cause… cause you look at… I mean, I guess…
- 36:11Tad Eggleston: I don't know if they're called kaiju or not, but, like, they've had weird creatures going back…
- 36:17Tad Eggleston: Forever, like, like, there's the… The various creatures that pop up in in…
- 36:25Tad Eggleston: like Usagi Yojimbo, that are various…
- 36:28Tad Eggleston: Spirits or demons or whatever, that aren't just those…
- 36:33Tad Eggleston: creatures because it's Usagi, but they would be if they're in similar stuff.
- 36:39Tyler Johnson: Yes, Dan Sakai's really good about including that kind of lore into his…
- 36:44Tad Eggleston: But that was all, like, small size. I think it became big as kind of the… nuclear age.
- 36:52Tad Eggleston: What if he took that Kaiju and dropped a bomb on it? It would get bigger! Yep.
- 36:59Tyler Johnson: Probably will. I've just never been a fan of Godzilla in general.
- 37:04Tyler Johnson: But this was a good book, the summer camp one. It was this girl going to art camp, this corporation took over, she kind of becomes friends with this baby kaiju, and I won't spoil it, but that's the main hits right there, you know?
- 37:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I, until recently, was similar, and I still haven't, like, gone back and watched…
- 37:27Tad Eggleston: Like, the movies and stuff yet?
- 37:30Tad Eggleston: But, like, enough creators that I love you know, Tim Seeley, God, but
- 37:41Tad Eggleston: Ethan Sheridan, or, I'm sorry, Ethan Griffin and
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: Can it be? Yeah, Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan.
- 37:50Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 37:53Tad Eggleston: Frank Thierry, Chris Gooch, Tom Scioli, you know, the most recent Monsterpiece Theater was by Kyle Baker.
- 38:03Tad Eggleston: you know…
- 38:05Tad Eggleston: So, again, enough… enough people whose work I really appreciate have been doing Godzilla stuff lately that it's like, okay, I need to at least explore what they're doing and see…
- 38:17Tad Eggleston: See what this is all about.
- 38:19Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 38:21Tad Eggleston: It's kind of like I wound up reading G.I. Joe when Kelly Thompson wrote a book, you know?
- 38:27Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 38:27Tad Eggleston: Aquaman, because Ram V wrote a book, you know?
- 38:32Tad Eggleston: When, when, when…
- 38:33Tyler Johnson: Uncle Man, come on.
- 38:34Tad Eggleston: No, his Occamen series was pretty good. And this is where I also have to remind myself, was it… I think it was…
- 38:44Tad Eggleston: And, like, I didn't at the time, and I think I still may need to, because…
- 38:56Tad Eggleston: Kelly Sue DeConnick wrote a run on Aquaman, and I just can't imagine Kelly Sue ever not writing something amazing.
- 39:07Tyler Johnson: rates.
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 39:10Tyler Johnson: I agree, I just really don't like the character.
- 39:13Tad Eggleston: Well, I understand.
- 39:14Tyler Johnson: It has nothing to do with any of the writers, but…
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: But, you know, I mean, I've found that there's almost no character that I dislike so much that, like, the right writer can't make a story that I love.
- 39:27Tyler Johnson: Interesting. I…
- 39:28Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 39:29Tyler Johnson: Yes, but it's… I don't think that's true for me. I think… Oh…
- 39:36Tyler Johnson: I think Aquaman is so boring to me.
- 39:40Tyler Johnson: that I just won't read it.
- 39:43Tyler Johnson: Okay, you know what? I take that back. Jeff Lemire got me to read Animal Man, so I will… I would.
- 39:51Tad Eggleston: You didn't like Morrison's Animal Man?
- 39:54Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 39:55Tad Eggleston: Wow!
- 39:56Tyler Johnson: So, I will, I will… if… if Jeff Lemire rates Aquaman, I will read it.
- 40:03Tad Eggleston: You know, the first Flash I read was because Jeff Lemire… well, not quite. I think I've read a little bit other Flash, but Jeff Lemire got me to read some Flash.
- 40:13Tyler Johnson: Oh, really?
- 40:15Tad Eggleston: He's doing the absolute flash. So what was your image from the 20s pic?
- 40:21Tyler Johnson: Golden Rage.
- 40:23Tad Eggleston: Oh, you did Golden Rage!
- 40:25Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 40:26Tyler Johnson: Did you…
- 40:27Tad Eggleston: I think Phil was doing Golden Rage.
- 40:30Tyler Johnson: Did he? Well, he's not even here.
- 40:32Tad Eggleston: Well, he's not here, so it doesn't matter, but…
- 40:35Tyler Johnson: If he chose it, if he chose it, sorry, Phil.
- 40:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 40:38Tyler Johnson: you lose. Golden Rage, I read, right?
- 40:43Tyler Johnson: It's kind of in a near-future society, I don't know, what'd you say?
- 40:48Tad Eggleston: in range.
- 40:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and we're women who are deemed, like, useless, mostly because they're older.
- 40:55Tad Eggleston: Old.
- 40:56Tyler Johnson: infertile, you know, or, you know, barren. They're… they're shoved off to some remote island, you know.
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: Generally.
- 41:06Tyler Johnson: You remember the, the, the Christmas movie where the, the Island of Misfit Toys? Yeah.
- 41:14Tad Eggleston: And I can't even remember… I'm going to check to see if the tagline
- 41:20Tad Eggleston: Is… is what I think it is.
- 41:24Tad Eggleston: And if it's not, I'll just… I'll tell you what I think of with Golden… keep going. I'm just…
- 41:30Tyler Johnson: Oh my god.
- 41:31Tad Eggleston: a short rattle.
- 41:32Tyler Johnson: You know, so it's this island, right, where the women are dropped off and they're left completely to themselves, and you end up with this community where they must both make friends, bake desserts, but also fight to the death sometimes.
- 41:48Tyler Johnson: You know, just for survival. It's, it's really fun.
- 41:54Tad Eggleston: Not the tagline, the blurb from Kelly Sue Deconnock.
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: Okay. Battle Royale meets the Golden Girls with dashes of Agatha Christie and Logan's Run.
- 42:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, that's pretty close. I would say yes.
- 42:08Tyler Johnson: Artist was, Lauren Knight. She did the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, comics.
- 42:14Tyler Johnson: It was really good.
- 42:18Tad Eggleston: This is also one where you can go back, Christy Williams and Lauren Knight have been on twice to talk about Golden Rage, and they brought, Sophie Dodson, the colorerer, the second time, so…
- 42:30Tyler Johnson: Oh, they did? Yeah. I think she was an ank girl, Sophie Dobson.
- 42:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 42:36Tad Eggleston: So, so, so we, we, we have definitely had some golden, golden rage talk here on 22 Panels. Such a good book.
- 42:44Tyler Johnson: It's…
- 42:45Tad Eggleston: Such a good book.
- 42:46Tyler Johnson: It's just like, what the… You know, just the premise of it alone. Okay, you know, in today's society, the way that the MAGA movement is going, and what they would like to see for women, I can imagine that, sure.
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: Oh yeah, no.
- 43:03Tyler Johnson: But…
- 43:03Tad Eggleston: Too… too real, both in terms of the… I mean, it's kind of like Bitch Planet. It's too real, both in terms of the idea that somebody could try it, and in terms of the idea that it might not work out the way they think it will.
- 43:18Tyler Johnson: Right?
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: Because it…
- 43:21Tyler Johnson: Oh, man.
- 43:22Tad Eggleston: It turns out that little old ladies can be badasses.
- 43:26Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah. Reminds me of this comic that's out now, Tigress Island.
- 43:31Tyler Johnson: Have you read that? Have you been.
- 43:32Tad Eggleston: I have. Patrick Kindland and EPHK?
- 43:35Tad Eggleston: Good stuff. Good stuff.
- 43:37Tyler Johnson: Similar per… not really similar permits, but women… women on an island that they need to be tough to get
- 43:46Tyler Johnson: out of there.
- 43:47Tad Eggleston: So the one I read, when Kyle Starks was on.
- 43:52Tad Eggleston: He talked about the stuff that Jeff Johns has been doing recently, his own little universe.
- 44:02Tad Eggleston: that I hadn't… I hadn't really given enough attention to.
- 44:06Tad Eggleston: Because Chef Johns isn't always my thing. But Kyle… when Kyle Starks speaks highly of something, and you need to pick an image book from…
- 44:15Tad Eggleston: the 20s, that's part of the Humble Bundle, it's… it's a good reason. So I read the first volume of Geiger from… from Geoff Johns and… and Gary Frank.
- 44:24Tyler Johnson: It's the original one from, like, probably almost 10 years ago now.
- 44:28Tad Eggleston: Not that long, because it's part of the 2020s.
- 44:32Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 44:35Tyler Johnson: Yeah, true, but Geiger has been out a while.
- 44:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, I think they're up to 3 volumes of it now, so it's gotta have been a little while, but…
- 44:48Tyler Johnson: The current run of Geiger is its… is a Volume 2.
- 44:53Tad Eggleston: The first issue of Geiger came out… And…
- 45:06Tad Eggleston: You said it's… the current run is… is Volume 2?
- 45:10Tyler Johnson: Well, I know you see, like, there… there's three… I mean.
- 45:14Tad Eggleston: Okay, the 6 issues I read…
- 45:17Tad Eggleston: Cause it looks like there was… there was…
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: Those 6 issues, an 80-page giant, a 2-page ground zero, and then the ongoing that's going on now.
- 45:28Tad Eggleston: But the 6 issues that I read.
- 45:30Tyler Johnson: Yes, that's what I'm… that's what I was asking, is it that?
- 45:33Tad Eggleston: came out in 2021, and yeah, that's what I read.
- 45:37Tyler Johnson: Okay, cool.
- 45:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Damn.
- 45:39Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, it was a, it was a cool premise. It's like the, the…
- 45:45Tad Eggleston: post-nuclear Holocaust world, like, the one guy who'd been under radiation treatment, like, wound up with superpowers rather than…
- 45:54Tad Eggleston: Rather than not being able to go on outside, and there's… there's some family stuff going on, and… and some…
- 46:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 46:04Tyler Johnson: I think it's cool. I read that original, small volume, you know? And I thought, I thought it was awesome in its premise.
- 46:15Tyler Johnson: that this guy has been exposed to radiation. You know, usually it's guys coming out of their bunker, and they're like, oh, the world didn't get.
- 46:24Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:24Tyler Johnson: as I thought. You know, but in this case, this guy got… this guy got it hard, and so… but he survived.
- 46:31Tyler Johnson: And,
- 46:33Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, and those are just… I mean, what we mentioned are just two of an absolutely stacked image in the 20s.
- 46:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 46:44Tad Eggleston: Mega Bundle. I mean, it's got both volumes of Little Monsters. Speaking of… Jeff Lemire and Dustin Wen.
- 46:52Tad Eggleston: It's got Enzuelo, it's got four volumes of Sacrificers, it's got Haha, Sad Clown Stories from Maxwell Prince and Martin Mrazzo, it's got both volumes of Free Planet, it's got both volumes of Assorted Crisis events, it's got Dust to Dust, it's got, I think.
- 47:10Tad Eggleston: 4 volumes of Blood Squad 7?
- 47:13Tad Eggleston: Four volumes of Adventure Man.
- 47:16Tad Eggleston: Two volumes of something epic, Sunburn, Under York, first volume of Dork.
- 47:22Tad Eggleston: Tin Can Society Swan Songs, also from…
- 47:26Tad Eggleston: Maxwell Prince and Martin Mrazzo, Jonathan Hickman's Decorum, fish flies from Lemire.
- 47:33Tad Eggleston: You'll Do Bad Things that you talked about recently, from Tyler Boss.
- 47:39Tad Eggleston: you know, the Golden Rage that we just talked about, James Tyen's World Tree, just, I…
- 47:47Tad Eggleston: First two volumes of Exquisite Corpses.
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: First volume of Bug Wars, 8 Billion Genies, 3 volumes of That Texas Blood.
- 47:58Tad Eggleston: This is just… this is one of the more, 4… 3 volumes of Forged? 3 or 4 volumes of Forged. I think 3 volumes. First volume of Escape.
- 48:09Tad Eggleston: This is, like, just far and away one of the… Image has put out a number of great humble bundles, and this one, like, takes the cake in terms of how absolutely stacked it is. Yeah, I agree. With really good books.
- 48:27Tyler Johnson: Right? I agree. It had a ton of stuff in it.
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: Absolutely worth the $25.
- 48:34Tyler Johnson: I mean, he… And I… I didn't buy it, because honestly, I own most of that. I've been…
- 48:43Tad Eggleston: I own a lot of it, but I have a tendency to buy them anyway, A, because I max out what I give to charity.
- 48:50Tad Eggleston: and, and B…
- 48:52Tad Eggleston: like, it's nice to have digital copies, it's nice to have them legally, and I like to support the idea that these things should happen.
- 49:02Tad Eggleston: But they're also DRM-free digital copies, so I can then turn around and share them with Tyler and…
- 49:08Tad Eggleston: Bill, and I mean, they're really useful to have when we're doing book clubs, because I can go, hey, who wants to read this? Can't get your hands on it, let me send you a PDF.
- 49:16Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 49:19Tyler Johnson: You're… you're gonna build… I can see you someday, building that database of digital comic books, that you will be the global hub for this, for digital comic books, because you will have… you will be the Netflix of digital comics, because you will… right?
- 49:39Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 49:40Tyler Johnson: Nobody else is doing it better. I mean, honestly, who else is doing digital comics better? I mean, I do like, I do, I do like,
- 49:50Tad Eggleston: I like Global Comics, I like.
- 49:51Tyler Johnson: global.
- 49:52Tad Eggleston: The IHE Bomb. Yeah.
- 49:54Tyler Johnson: Do not really.
- 49:55Tad Eggleston: Sweet is okay.
- 49:59Tad Eggleston: Global Comics is definitely my preference right now.
- 50:01Tyler Johnson: I can see people using Tad.
- 50:07Tad Eggleston: I gotta get the license, don't get me in trouble, Tyler!
- 50:11Tyler Johnson: Oh, we haven't built the app yet.
- 50:14Tad Eggleston: Right, right, all right. So, books we hope will be spectacular,
- 50:19Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 50:21Tad Eggleston: It's, like, really good week next week.
- 50:25Tyler Johnson: I bet.
- 50:25Tad Eggleston: Really? Okay.
- 50:27Tyler Johnson: You have this as your, you know it's number one, but I'm about to read it, is ch-ch-ch-ch.
- 50:33Tad Eggleston: Got shoe number 2?
- 50:34Tyler Johnson: Chachu.
- 50:35Tad Eggleston: first one?
- 50:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yes.
- 50:37Tad Eggleston: So good.
- 50:37Tyler Johnson: Yes, I agree. But I haven't read number 2, so it's all… it's sitting in my pile at the store.
- 50:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, that… Defiant, the story of Robert Smalls, is finally coming out. Rob Edwards, Sean Damian Hill, Alex Patterson, it's kind of had a long and winding road, so I got to read a preview of that, I think, like, a year ago, for an interview that never quite came together.
- 51:05Tad Eggleston: But it was really good. Shout out to a friend of the podcast, Larry Stahl, his Midwest Man of Power is finally coming out in exciting comics number 62. Got delayed a little bit.
- 51:17Tyler Johnson: Marie and I have also become friends.
- 51:20Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 51:21Tyler Johnson: Sorry, he's my friend first. No, I'm kidding, he's not.
- 51:24Tad Eggleston: Yay, hey!
- 51:25Tyler Johnson: No, no, Larry, if you're listening,
- 51:29Tyler Johnson: Yeah, we'll talk soon. I gotta… we… he was at… we were chatting about getting him to our Comic-Con here in September.
- 51:36Tad Eggleston: Oh, nice!
- 51:37Tyler Johnson: Yeah, but…
- 51:38Tad Eggleston: at SuperCon.
- 51:40Tyler Johnson: It's SuperCom, but we were too late to the game. No room left for poor Larry.
- 51:46Tad Eggleston: Anyway, keep that.
- 51:47Tyler Johnson: Oh, Tad, sorry about that.
- 51:48Tad Eggleston: Forever, from Brian Box Brown, we gotta reach out to him, have him back. He was really fun to talk to. Yeah.
- 51:56Tad Eggleston: Of the Earth, number 5, from Chris Condon and Charlie Adler, and Andrew Eric. I mean, it's like, Chris Condon and Charlie Adlard are coming up over and over again. I haven't read all of this, but Fanagraphics sent me a physical copy, so I was able to flip through it, and even if the story
- 52:13Tad Eggleston: doesn't live up to my expectations. The art is so fucking good that it still qualifies as spectacular. The Queen of the Cosmos trilogy from Barbara Willie Mendez.
- 52:24Tad Eggleston: And of course, Starhench Book 2, Kiss for Atticus No. 3 from Leigh Ann Sharp. Those are all the ones I KNOW
- 52:32Tad Eggleston: are spectacular.
- 52:33Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:36Tyler Johnson: Now.
- 52:37Tad Eggleston: These next three, I'm only pretty sure will be spectacular. Six of us, number one, from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez-Walta at Dark Horse, bringing back together the Vision Team. Forever Home from Sammy Cavella and Christian Ward at Oney.
- 52:52Tyler Johnson: That one…
- 52:53Tad Eggleston: Beautiful.
- 52:54Tyler Johnson: That one looked… the cover, like, I saw the cover and went, yep, that goes into my pile. Yep. And they say, don't judge a book by its cover, but that one, I'm like, that sounds great.
- 53:04Tad Eggleston: And then, issue number 5 of Sarah Gailey and Hainings' Neighborhood Watch. I have been adoring This story…
- 53:12Tad Eggleston: So… Can't remember if this is the final issue or the penultimate issue.
- 53:18Tad Eggleston: Certainly.
- 53:19Tyler Johnson: you know next week. Next week.
- 53:21Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I don't remember if I reordered, or ordered number 6 or not.
- 53:25Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 53:26Tad Eggleston: So, Phil's not here for an all-new Giant Trade Waiter pick,
- 53:31Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 53:31Tad Eggleston: You wanna pick one?
- 53:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, I've got 5 in the collections and graphic novels, plus the Defiant and the Forever and the Queen of Cosmos trilogy are all graphic novels, rather than…
- 53:46Tad Eggleston: They're the ones that I'll speak to.
- 53:48Tyler Johnson: Hmm…
- 53:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, if you don't want to pick one… You pick one.
- 53:51Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna pick one for you, because I am, like…
- 53:56Tyler Johnson: I was put on the spot, it was so…
- 53:59Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna tell you that I feel like this is totally up your alley. I think you're gonna wanna read Queen of the Cosmos comics trilogy from Barbie, Barbara Willie.
- 54:07Tyler Johnson: I agree, that's all.
- 54:08Tad Eggleston: It's got, like, psychedelic, cool, alternative, underground-type art.
- 54:15Tad Eggleston: Here, let me go quickly pull up the… The… the write-up on it.
- 54:23Tad Eggleston: So, so, so that, like, I, I…
- 54:27Tad Eggleston: Give it… give it its proper props.
- 54:34Tad Eggleston: And here, I'll share my screen so you can see what we're… We're talking about, too.
- 54:44Tad Eggleston: So here it is. Barbara Willie Mendez Masterpiece of Hallucinogenic Storytelling.
- 54:51Tad Eggleston: Queen of the Cosmos comics trilogy, collected for the first time in a single volume.
- 54:57Tyler Johnson: It looks great, you know.
- 54:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 54:59Tyler Johnson: Psychedelic colors, the mushrooms.
- 55:01Tad Eggleston: Mendez chronicles women's creator's psychedelic journey through biblical tableau, modern life, and into a fantastical, interstellar future, weaving in her own intimate stories of being an artist, mother, and grandmother, especially in the never-before-published third volume.
- 55:18Tad Eggleston: Inspired by Jewish mysticism, Mendez presents a creation myth shaped by feminine cosmic consciousness with new, immersive worlds and a radical reimagining of this one.
- 55:31Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 55:33Tyler Johnson: That's pretty sweet.
- 55:34Tad Eggleston: This feels like it's a Tyler book. I think I'm gonna love it too, but it feels like it's.
- 55:38Tyler Johnson: The queen character in the middle has kind of a Christ pose going on. Right. You know.
- 55:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah, the artwork looks amazing, so I might just read it just based on that, judging another book by its cover.
- 55:53Tad Eggleston: But there you go.
- 55:54Tyler Johnson: Well, that's pretty sweet. That's gonna… I'm gonna buy that, for sure.
- 55:57Tad Eggleston: So.
- 55:58Tyler Johnson: Oh, look at that.
- 55:58Tad Eggleston: without that Phil guy, we… we were out in a… in a… Reasonable amount of time.
- 56:04Tyler Johnson: Well, that, and we had our rundown ready to go.
- 56:09Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's always a bonus. Yeah, we were just ready and done.
- 56:13Tad Eggleston: That was a bonus. That was a bonus.
- 56:16Tad Eggleston: Also, we did the, hey, look over there.
- 56:19Tyler Johnson: No.
- 56:21Tyler Johnson: I was about… you got, you got… you got me on that one, that was funny.
- 56:26Tad Eggleston: You wanna take us out?
- 56:28Tyler Johnson: Yes, I do. Alright guys, thanks for listening. This has been 22Panels. We will catch you guys after the next page. See ya!
