- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! Ready for episode 56? Luna: Yes! I've been practicing from last episode — those adjectives were fun. But today I have a request: I keep getting colds, and I want to be able to tell a Dutch doctor how I feel. Lucas: Oh, that's a great practical topic! Let's learn some phrases for describing symptoms. Perfect timing too — it's that time of year. Luna: Exactly! So where do we start? Lucas: The most basic thing you can say is 'Ik ben ziek.' That means 'I am sick.' Let's break it down: 'Ik' means 'I', 'ben' means 'am', and 'ziek' means 'sick'. So, 'Ik ben ziek.' Luna: Ik ben ziek. Ik ben ziek. That's pretty straightforward! Lucas: Perfect! Now, if you want to be more specific, you can say what hurts. For example, 'Ik heb hoofdpijn' — 'I have a headache.' 'Hoofd' is head, 'pijn' is pain. So 'hoofdpijn' is headache. Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. That's a mouthful! Ik heb hoofdpijn. Lucas: You've got it! Another common one is 'Ik heb koorts' — 'I have a fever.' 'Koorts' means fever. Try it. Luna: Ik heb koorts. Ik heb koorts. That one's shorter. I like it. Lucas: And if you're coughing, you can say 'Ik hoest.' That's 'I cough' or 'I am coughing.' Just 'Ik hoest.' Luna: Ik hoest. Ik hoest. So 'hoest' is like 'hoist' but with an 's'? Lucas: Close! The 'oe' is like 'oo' in 'boot'. So 'hoest'. Luna: Got it. Ik hoest. Lucas: Now, the doctor might ask you 'Waar doet het pijn?' — 'Where does it hurt?' 'Waar' means where, 'doet' is does, 'het' is it, 'pijn' is pain. So: 'Waar doet het pijn?' Luna: Waar doet het pijn? Waar doet het pijn? That's a good question to know. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a mini conversation. Imagine you go to the doctor. You say: 'Ik ben ziek.' The doctor says: 'Waar doet het pijn?' You say: 'Ik heb hoofdpijn en ik hoest.' Luna: Okay, let me try. Ik ben ziek. Waar doet het pijn? Ik heb hoofdpijn en ik hoest. Lucas: That's perfect! You just had a doctor's visit in Dutch. Luna: Oh, that feels good. But what if I also have a fever? Can I say 'Ik heb hoofdpijn en ik heb koorts'? Lucas: Absolutely. You can combine them: 'Ik heb hoofdpijn en koorts.' You can drop the second 'ik heb' to make it smoother. Luna: Ah, like 'I have a headache and fever.' Makes sense. Ik heb hoofdpijn en koorts. Lucas: Yes! And remember, you can use 'Ik ben ziek' as a general statement. Let's review all five phrases one more time. Luna: Sounds good. Let's go through them slowly. Lucas: First: 'Ik ben ziek.' Luna: Ik ben ziek. Lucas: Second: 'Ik heb hoofdpijn.' Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Lucas: Third: 'Ik heb koorts.' Luna: Ik heb koorts. Lucas: Fourth: 'Ik hoest.' Luna: Ik hoest. Lucas: And fifth: 'Waar doet het pijn?' Luna: Waar doet het pijn? Great! I think I can handle a doctor's visit now. Lucas: You sure can! And if you ever need to say 'I have a cold', that's 'Ik heb een verkoudheid.' But that's for another episode. Luna: Ooh, saving that for later. Okay, I'll practice these. Thanks Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. And listeners, keep practicing these phrases. Next time on Fexingo, we'll build on this. Tot ziens! Luna: Doei!
