- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 21st of January. Which would you believe is
- 0:19Hugging Day? Yes, today is the day that
- 0:21everyone celebrates hugs, going around hugging people.
- 0:25I'm not sure this is something we we do so much after COVID.
- 0:28Is it just randomly hug people? I know at the end of worship on
- 0:32Sunday, people leaving the church, shaking my hand as I
- 0:35left and I thought blind me. That's a lot of hand shaking.
- 0:38I'm so used to fist pumping and you know, working in a hospital,
- 0:40so aware of infection control, particularly post COVID.
- 0:44Man, a lot of physical contact like that makes me a little
- 0:48uncomfortable. So maybe we can call this fist
- 0:52bumping day. No, give your loved ones a hug.
- 0:56Give them a squeeze, tell them you love them.
- 0:58Yeah, we can always do that. But fist bumps and hugging and
- 1:02handshaking aside, we are here to sit down with Jesus and hear
- 1:07some more of his teaching. And today he is going to be
- 1:11teaching about forgiveness and faith and he's going to be
- 1:14healing and talking about the coming of the Kingdom.
- 1:16And boy, so much to cover. So how about let us just sit
- 1:21down and take a deep breath, let go of whatever it is that today
- 1:27has a hold on us for. Put it all down and open our
- 1:32hearts ready to hear what our Lord and our Saviour and our God
- 1:36has to share with us as we read together Luke chapter 17.
- 1:52One day Jesus said to his disciples, there will always be
- 1:56temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who
- 2:00does the tempting? It would be better to be thrown
- 2:03into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck, and to
- 2:07cause one of these little ones to fall into sin.
- 2:10So watch yourselves. If another believer sins, rebuke
- 2:14that person. Then if there is repentance,
- 2:17forgive even at that person wrongs you 7 times a day, and
- 2:22each time turns again and asks forgiveness.
- 2:25You must forgive. The apostle said to the Lord,
- 2:29Show us how to increase our faith.
- 2:32The Lord answered, If you had faith even as small as a mustard
- 2:36seed, you could say to this Mulberry tree, may you be
- 2:40uprooted and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you.
- 2:45When a servant comes in from ploughing or taking care of
- 2:47sheep, does his master say, come in and eat with me?
- 2:52No, he says, prepare my meal, put on your apron and serve me
- 2:56while I eat. Then you can eat later.
- 2:59And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was
- 3:02told to do? Of course not.
- 3:05In the same way, when you obey me, you should say we are
- 3:08unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.
- 3:13As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border
- 3:17between Galilee and Samaria. As he entered a village there,
- 3:2110 men with leprosy stood at a distance crying out.
- 3:25Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. He looked at them and said, Go
- 3:30show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were
- 3:34cleansed of their leprosy. One of them, when he saw that he
- 3:38was healed, came back to Jesus shouting praise God.
- 3:42He fell to the ground at Jesus feet, thanking him for what he
- 3:46had done. This man was a Samaritan.
- 3:50Jesus asked, didn't I heal 10 men?
- 3:53Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give
- 3:56glory to God except this foreigner?
- 3:59And Jesus said to the man, stand up and go, your faith has healed
- 4:04you. One day the Pharisees asked
- 4:09Jesus, when will the Kingdom of God come?
- 4:13Jesus replied, the Kingdom of God can't be detected by visible
- 4:17signs. You won't be able to say, here
- 4:20it is or it's over there, for the Kingdom of God is already
- 4:23among you. Then he said to his disciples,
- 4:27The time is coming when you will look to see the day when the Son
- 4:30of Man returns, but you won't see it.
- 4:34People will tell you, look, there is the Son of Man, or here
- 4:38he is, but don't go out and follow them.
- 4:40For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end
- 4:44to the other, so it will be on the day when the Son of Man
- 4:48comes. But first the Son of Man must
- 4:51suffer terribly and be rejected by this generation.
- 4:56When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah's
- 4:59day. In those days the people enjoyed
- 5:02banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time
- 5:05Noah entered his boat and the flood came and destroyed them
- 5:08all. And the world will be as it was
- 5:11in the days of Lot. People went about their daily
- 5:14business, eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and
- 5:18building, until the morning Lot left Sodom.
- 5:22Then fire and burning sulphur rained down from heaven and
- 5:25destroyed them all. Yes, it will be business as
- 5:29usual right up to the day when the Son of Man is revealed.
- 5:33On that day, a person out on the deck of a roof must not go down
- 5:37into the house to pack. A person out in the field must
- 5:40not return home. Remember what happened to Lot's
- 5:44wife. If you cling to your life, you
- 5:46will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.
- 5:52That night, two people will be asleep in one bed, one will be
- 5:56taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding flour
- 6:00together at the mill. One will be taken, the other
- 6:03left. Where will this happen, Lord?
- 6:06The disciples asked. Jesus replied.
- 6:10Just as the gathering of vultures shows, there is a
- 6:13carcass near by, so these signs indicate that the end is near.
- 6:28Ah, we love you Jesus, and we thank you that you do not come
- 6:33and change this world quietly, but you are here to transform it
- 6:38inside out. And when you return, it will be
- 6:41no secret, but like lightning lighting up the sky from one end
- 6:45to the other, everyone will see you and know of your lordship
- 6:50and supremacy over all. And Lord, we don't need to put
- 6:54off waiting for the day when we can participate in your Kingdom,
- 6:57because here is your Kingdom. You have brought your Kingdom to
- 7:01earth. So Lord, I pray that our
- 7:03business as usual can be your kingdom's business and that
- 7:08today as we go about our day, it can be in the context or with
- 7:14that lens in everything we see and understand that this is your
- 7:18time and that the way that we Live Today needs to be as though
- 7:22today could be our last. Honouring you, loving each
- 7:26other, upholding what you have taught us, not waiting for
- 7:30another day to follow you. But this is the day, Lord.
- 7:33This is the day that you call us to be your children, your
- 7:37brothers and sisters, your disciples.
- 7:42So here we are, your people, ready to live for you.
- 7:46And boy are we grateful for all that you give us, for all that
- 7:50you are and all that you have done for us.
- 7:54A wonderful saving, providing God.
- 7:57And so we pray all of this in your wonderful name, Amen.
