- 0:00All right, we are live. Hello everybody, Charlie Marlow
- 0:02here on the Kenny Wallace YouTube channel wanted to talk
- 0:06with all of you and hopefully you jump in the comments as
- 0:09well. Already see Matthew McDonnell in
- 0:11there. I want to discuss this Carl
- 0:14Edwards interview with Dale Earnhardt junior on the Dale
- 0:18Junior download Dirty MO Media. It dropped Wednesday morning, so
- 0:23I listened to it last night. This interview is fantastic.
- 0:29If you're a NASCAR fan, if you're a sports fan, if you're
- 0:33just a fan of of good conversation, good discussions,
- 0:39just good content, you absolutely have to listen or
- 0:43watch this interview. And by no means am I saying that
- 0:47because here on the Kenny Wallace YouTube channel, we have
- 0:51a partnership with Dirty MO Media.
- 0:55It is just fantastic. It it's one of the best.
- 1:00I mean, it might be one of the best NASCAR.
- 1:02Maybe it's the best NASCAR podcast, singular podcast I've
- 1:06ever heard. I, I can't I can't remember
- 1:09myself being more into listening to this podcast.
- 1:15And then also once I started listening just how good it was
- 1:19for heck, almost two hours that that includes the ads and all
- 1:23that. So maybe the, the Carl Edwards
- 1:25portion was more like 90 minutes or 100 minutes, Whatever it was,
- 1:30it's it's well worth your time. Now.
- 1:33There's so much to talk about when when you talk to somebody
- 1:36for over an hour and a half. But obviously the big news, the
- 1:41big story and then Carl Edwards, he has started to discuss this
- 1:47because he went into the Hall of Fame.
- 1:50So he had his speech. He's done a bunch of media
- 1:53availabilities over the last year, but he hasn't really
- 1:55gotten super in depth like he did in this podcast with Dale
- 2:00Junior. So let's just start with I think
- 2:03what is the most interesting part and that is why Carl
- 2:07Edwards left unexpectedly, suddenly just retiring from
- 2:11NASCAR and then kind of disappearing before what was it
- 2:17last year, year before? It was the year before with the
- 2:21NASCAR's 75 greatest drivers that Carl Edwards started to
- 2:27reappear at the tracks. That was Darlington, what,
- 2:31couple years ago. But you kind of wondered what
- 2:36exactly was Carl Edwards going to say, right?
- 2:41Because I, I also think deep down there's a lot of things
- 2:45Carl Edwards wants to say that he won't say.
- 2:49And even at a point in this interview, he said, you know, I
- 2:52don't know how honest I want to be about all this.
- 2:56And Dale Junior also did a really good job of, of kind of,
- 3:00I don't want to say pressing him, but following up.
- 3:04And it was, it was 2 buddies. It was 2 buddies talking.
- 3:07It was a therapy session. I, I'm, I'm telling you, me
- 3:11saying this, I have no financial incentive to say this, but you
- 3:15should absolutely watch or listen to this interview.
- 3:20And I actually, I listen to it on podcast.
- 3:22I kind of wish I would have watched it here on YouTube just
- 3:25because I do think, I do think the facial expressions matter
- 3:29and, and maybe how long it takes for him to, to, to say something
- 3:34or if you can tell he's saying something, but he's, he's
- 3:37holding back a little bit. So anyway, he he discussed his
- 3:42his final race obviously there at Homestead and he did use the
- 3:48words, I can't remember the exact sentence, but he did say
- 3:51that that was snatched from him, that that that championship was
- 3:55snatched from him. And and he used that that
- 3:58verbiage after Dale Junior followed up because Carl Edwards
- 4:03story, which which I believe, but I do think he was, I, I
- 4:07think he was holding back a little bit just because he
- 4:10doesn't want to absolutely destroy NASCAR, right.
- 4:15He did criticize NASCAR a bit saying, look, look, we we know
- 4:19it's a fact and that he talked to people, he talked to people
- 4:24that NASCAR back then, they were throwing those debris cautions
- 4:29to re rack the field to make things more interesting at the
- 4:33end of a race. And he said, look, that's a
- 4:36that's a fact. He also got into this story
- 4:39where he was talking about his faith and how he was always
- 4:42basically an atheist and he said just something, something
- 4:46happened that weekend where his his motorhome broke down a
- 4:50couple times. He almost, he almost wrecked.
- 4:54And then everything that happened with that final, with
- 4:58that final caution, with losing the championship.
- 5:02So he never won a championship. Obviously, he, he kind of framed
- 5:06it like that, that God had a different plan for him, right?
- 5:11Like that this is how it was all supposed to go.
- 5:15And and this is also coming what we're we're what now 8-9 years
- 5:21later. But but he did say again that he
- 5:25felt like the championship was snatched from him.
- 5:29And when I was when I was listening to this, look, I do
- 5:33think NASCAR deserves a lot of criticism, criticism for this
- 5:37and they have been criticized a lot for this.
- 5:39This was 8-9 years ago. They're not doing this anymore.
- 5:43I don't really think you can do this anymore.
- 5:46Those debris cautions to re rack the field to make it more
- 5:50interesting at the end of the race, especially with gambling
- 5:54in the sport. Tony, Tony Stewart talked about
- 5:57this in the Kenny conversation couple years ago.
- 6:00You can't do any type of judging by the hip or internal, let's
- 6:07say moderating. And, and what I mean by that is
- 6:12Tony Stewart and Kenny Wallace talked about the fact that back
- 6:14in the day, if you pissed NASCAR off, if you said something in
- 6:18the media they didn't like, they could give you a pit Rd.
- 6:21speeding penalty the next week. And that was NASCAR's way of, of
- 6:26basically governing, right? You, you really can't do that.
- 6:30You can't do that now that you have legalized sports gambling
- 6:35and all of these leagues and what now tracks, they're
- 6:40essentially in bed with the gambling companies, which which
- 6:42is fine, but you can't have people who put a ton of money on
- 6:46the line thinking that a sports league is basically re racking
- 6:51the field at the end just to make it interesting.
- 6:55And I did find this very fascinating.
- 6:59And, and Carl Edwards said after, after the season, I think
- 7:03he said he went down to Key West by himself to kind of figure out
- 7:07what he wanted to do. And he was driving and he went
- 7:10to, he went to Joe Gibbs Racing to basically tell Joe Gibbs his
- 7:16decision. And I did think the way he
- 7:18framed this was really, really interesting.
- 7:21He basically said that he's so devoted, he was so devoted to
- 7:26racing that he put his his heart, his soul, his mind, his
- 7:30body into it. And he's thinking and at the
- 7:33time, what is he? Is he 30?
- 7:35I don't even know 3637, whatever.
- 7:38We'll we'll look it up. Something like that.
- 7:40But he's thinking himself. And also he's talking to Jill
- 7:43Junior about this with Dale Junior having his his head
- 7:46injuries and all that. And Carl Edwards said, you know,
- 7:49he hadn't had necessarily the the injuries like that, the
- 7:53concussions, but he had gotten his bell rung and he was
- 7:56starting to think more about that.
- 7:58Dale Junior brought that to the attention of a lot of folks.
- 8:01But I found this part really, really interesting.
- 8:04He's thinking, OK, I just finished up a year of NASCAR and
- 8:09he's thinking, if I'm going to do this again, I'm going to do 1
- 8:13full year where I put my entire life into this, right?
- 8:18I don't see my wife as much. I don't see my kids as much.
- 8:22I'm gone all the time. I'm traveling every single week.
- 8:27Obviously well paid. We all know that you get the
- 8:30fame, you get all that. But he's thinking to himself and
- 8:34and he said this, he said, am I going to go through another year
- 8:39of this knowing it's probably going to come down to that final
- 8:462 laps, right, that final caution in Homestead?
- 8:49You're going to do everything all year long, all season long,
- 8:55whether you have a great season, whether you have a bad season,
- 8:58but if you're in the playoffs, if you're in the championship
- 9:00hunt. He's thinking to himself, am I
- 9:02going to put myself through all of this knowing that NASCAR is
- 9:07probably going to do the same thing and throw that late
- 9:11caution and it's all going to come down to a final restart.
- 9:15And I thought that really, really put the whole thing in
- 9:19perspective, right? To go through all of that, you
- 9:24could be great, right? All the trials and tribulations,
- 9:2636 races, you get to the 36th race and you know it's going to
- 9:31come down to a final restart. And I just thought that part was
- 9:35really, really interesting. Again, if you guys haven't
- 9:37watched this, if you haven't listened to it, I just, I can't
- 9:40recommend it enough. Just a A2 hour therapy session
- 9:45between buddies and, and look, they, they talked about that,
- 9:49that, that was the most interesting part to me.
- 9:52And also Dale Junior asked him, look, have you had more
- 9:54opportunities? Of course, all kinds of great
- 9:58teams have have contacted Carl Edwards over the years and he
- 10:02has not run a race. He didn't totally rule that out.
- 10:06I, I think we're going to see Carl Edwards run a race.
- 10:09Maybe it's an Xfinity race and I don't know, this year, next
- 10:12year, whatever, I, I can see Carl Edwards running one more
- 10:16race or or a couple more, who knows.
- 10:19But he's doing TV now, going to be doing TV with Dale Earnhardt
- 10:23junior with, with the new package there with what is it
- 10:26Amazon? And so just a really fascinating
- 10:29interview from what he's been doing since then, talking about
- 10:33how he's rekindled his relationship with his kids.
- 10:36Didn't know his kids very much. He went on this boating
- 10:41adventure where he went and bought a boat over there in
- 10:45Europe and drove the boat back with his son.
- 10:49And he told this really great story where they were travelling
- 10:53and he said he just needed to get a workout in.
- 10:55He went out to the dock doing burpees or whatever, and he said
- 10:58his cell phone fell into the water.
- 11:01And he said his son said something like, well, well, good
- 11:04dad, because now you'll pay attention to me.
- 11:07And he said that hit him really hard.
- 11:09He said once he was gone from the sport that first year or
- 11:13whatever it was, he said there was there was a time where in
- 11:16the morning, his son, they ran into the room of, of he and his
- 11:20wife's room. And the son jumped on his side
- 11:23into his side of the bed, which is something that never
- 11:25happened. And he turns and looks his wife
- 11:28and and she says, this is what you've been missing.
- 11:30Just a really fascinating conversation, you know, doesn't
- 11:35doesn't regret it. And I'm sure he, he said, look,
- 11:38that first year or two really, really difficult.
- 11:42He, he said there was a time where his wife wanted to, to
- 11:44watch a race and watched a couple laps.
- 11:47He watched a couple laps and just couldn't do it anymore.
- 11:51And he said he went out and about and people would say, Hey,
- 11:54how's your season going? And he said, well, I'm not
- 11:56racing anymore. They're like, what, what the
- 11:58heck are you talking about? Because I, I, I get that too,
- 12:01especially if you're an athlete at that level, the highest level
- 12:06in Motorsports, that becomes your your whole identity is, is
- 12:10being a racer. Want to thank you guys for
- 12:13watching here. We got a bunch of people in.
- 12:16We got some comments and questions.
- 12:18I will get to those as well. Let's see.
- 12:21Jerry Langston says because they stole his win.
- 12:25Talking about that championship. Yeah, Jerry Langston.
- 12:29Don't blame him. Championships are hard to come
- 12:32by, especially when NASCAR sticks it to you with no Lube.
- 12:37That's what Jerry Langston is saying.
- 12:39Yeah, when I, when I was listening to this too, I, I will
- 12:43say again, you know, it, it, it does stink that NASCAR did this
- 12:48back in the day. And again, we're rehashing this.
- 12:51But that's what that's what we do.
- 12:52When you have a big interview like this.
- 12:54It is a it is a damn shame because I think most people
- 12:58agree that Carl Edwards was royally screwed back in the day.
- 13:02And Carl also talked about the first championship that he
- 13:06missed out on where he tied Tony Stewart.
- 13:10So you're down to a tie, but you lose by by that much.
- 13:15But you didn't have, you know, Dale Junior use the word
- 13:18shenanigans. You didn't have the shenanigans
- 13:21with that first attempt to win the championship.
- 13:24Of course it's going to be heartbreaking when you you get
- 13:27down to literally a tie essentially and you lose to Tony
- 13:30Stewart. But the but the way he lost the
- 13:34championship at the end when he's ending up retiring there,
- 13:40that is a bitter pill to swallow.
- 13:43And again, 8-9 years later, I don't want to say he's over.
- 13:47You're probably never truly over that.
- 13:50But time heals all wounds. You move on, he's back in the
- 13:54good graces of the sport, which I think is is fantastic.
- 13:58I remember we had a a Rick Mash show and I was talking to Rick
- 14:01Mast about this when Carl Edwards was was going to get in
- 14:04the Hall of Fame. And to me, I remember we were
- 14:08kind of we were kind of debating and arguing because he didn't
- 14:10like the fact that Carl Edwards made all the money in the sport
- 14:16left the sport, right, kind of didn't have anything to do with
- 14:19NASCAR for the last eight years or so.
- 14:21And maybe it's because I'm just somebody who I'm I'm always
- 14:24looking for stories, interesting stories.
- 14:27I think the way Carl Edwards left made his story more
- 14:31interesting, right? He's a great driver.
- 14:34He's pissed. He retires out of nowhere and
- 14:38just goes off the grid and essentially nobody hears from
- 14:42him, right? There was some some funny jokes
- 14:44at the beginning of the podcast on The Dirty MO media, Dale
- 14:48Junior download. And Dale Junior's messing with
- 14:53him. He's like, you know, do you have
- 14:55a bunker? He's like, do you do you have a
- 14:57supply of of food that would last you whatever it is joking.
- 15:01Obviously there's all these rumors about Carl Edwards of of
- 15:04what the hell was he doing right?
- 15:06Did he build some type of bomb shelter?
- 15:08Is he is he preparing for the apocalypse, which he's not.
- 15:12He didn't say he has like a supply of supply of food that
- 15:15would last him a little bit, but so did Dale Junior.
- 15:17So just some kind of funny moments from that podcast.
- 15:20There another another cool story.
- 15:24And I had heard this, but they hadn't talked about it together,
- 15:27obviously, because Carl Edwards hadn't talked with anybody.
- 15:30But the famous story that Dale Junior has told a million times,
- 15:33hanging out with Kenny Schrader, going to the strip club back in
- 15:37the day when Junior was like 15 or so.
- 15:40So what is that like 35 years ago?
- 15:43So the story goes, Dale Junior can't get in the strip club, so
- 15:46he has to sit outside on the truck and he sits with this guy.
- 15:50And Dale Earnhardt Junior did not know until I think it was
- 15:56essentially the end of Carl Edwards career, Dale Earnhardt
- 15:59Junior did not know that the man he sat with on that truck while
- 16:03everybody else was in the strip club having fun.
- 16:05So Dale Junior sitting there and drinking beer, that was Carl
- 16:08Edwards dad, which is really, really fascinating.
- 16:12And, and, and Dale Junior said, man, I wish I would have known
- 16:15that when we were driving. He just said, you know, our
- 16:18relationship or friendship, he, he, he thought would have been
- 16:22so impacted by knowing that that dude that sat with him on the
- 16:25truck 35 years ago was Carl Edwards dad.
- 16:30And I just thought that was a was a really cool story.
- 16:33Obviously, if you don't know, I think most of you do, but Carl
- 16:36Edwards cousins with Ken Schrader, I think they're
- 16:39cousins 1st removed. So they were hanging out back in
- 16:43the day. Like I said, this was like, this
- 16:44was like 35 years ago. It's funny because I was in Ken
- 16:47Schrader's shop. I was in his shop quite a bit.
- 16:51I would say, I don't know, 5-6, seven times when we first
- 16:54started recording this Herman Schrader, before we got all the
- 16:59gear and whatnot so he could, he could do it himself from the
- 17:02shop. But I remember it.
- 17:04And you, I don't know if you'll be able to see this.
- 17:05Actually, you probably can't. You have to really zoom in.
- 17:08But if you see where Schrader is sitting in the office of his
- 17:12shop, he's got kind of like a bulletin board in the
- 17:14background. So you probably can't see, it's
- 17:16probably too small and depending on where he's sitting.
- 17:18But on that bulletin board is that famous business card.
- 17:22You've probably seen the story where when Carl Edwards was
- 17:25whatever, 18/19/2021 years old as he's trying to get a get a
- 17:29NASCAR ride, he passed out these business cards with his picture
- 17:32on it. And it said something like if
- 17:34you're looking for a driver, you're looking for me, or if
- 17:36you're looking for a driver, you're looking for Carl Edwards.
- 17:39And so that actual business card, because again, Schrader
- 17:43and Carl Edwards are cousins, that's sitting there on the
- 17:46bulletin board in Ken Trader's shop, which is pretty sweet.
- 17:50And there's a lot of a lot of Missouri connections here
- 17:52because Trader shop, gosh, what, what town is it in?
- 17:58I can't remember. I've been there.
- 17:59It's like it's see, I live in basically Saint Louis, not the
- 18:04city, but like 15 minutes from downtown.
- 18:07Trader lives about 40 minutes from me.
- 18:09Carl Edwards lives in Columbia where University of Missouri is.
- 18:14That's a good two hours from Saint Louis.
- 18:17And just because we're talking about Missouri connections,
- 18:21Kenny Wallace had Jamie McMurray on Kenny Conversations and that
- 18:26already dropped this morning on Dirty MO Media Podcast and it's
- 18:29going to drop here on YouTube later tonight.
- 18:31Really good conversation. I just bring that up because I'm
- 18:34talking about Missouri connections.
- 18:37All right, get back here and check out some of your comments.
- 18:40I'm not going to go super long on this.
- 18:43Let's see, let's see, Bibsters repair shop says.
- 18:48Just finished listening to the podcast.
- 18:50Really excited to see Carl back at the track.
- 18:54Jerry Langston saying NASCAR been making paper champions
- 18:58talking about the controversy with Edwards and and maybe he's
- 19:01also talking about the playoff situation.
- 19:04I know a lot of old school NASCAR fans don't love
- 19:06necessarily the the playoff format taking away from the
- 19:11regular season and all that good time says I don't believe it
- 19:17should come down to one race or one restart.
- 19:20I don't either. And that's where I I, I think
- 19:23NASCAR needs to continue. I shouldn't say tweak because
- 19:27NASCAR said they didn't want to tweak the format every year,
- 19:30right? If they're going to make a
- 19:32change, they're going to make it more substantial, which is why
- 19:34they didn't really make any changes this year.
- 19:37But potentially down the road. I think whether it's a couple
- 19:43races at the end, I, I do think one thing that you can do that's
- 19:47easy is rotate the final race. Now that doesn't take away from
- 19:51it coming down to one race, but I do think that takes away from
- 19:55a particular manufacturer that just happens to have it figured
- 19:59out like it has been for Penske in the in the last several years
- 20:04with Phoenix. I would rotate what, what do you
- 20:06guys think? I would rotate Phoenix.
- 20:11Las Vegas, would you do? Would you do Homestead?
- 20:15You can't do Atlanta because there's too much, too much with
- 20:19a superspeedway. I think luck involved,
- 20:21obviously. So you're not you're not going
- 20:22to do Atlanta. What am I missing there for the
- 20:25final, final three races? What do you think?
- 20:28If you did a rotation of three, you think that's fair?
- 20:32If you go Phoenix, Vegas, Homestead, what do you guys
- 20:36think on that? Let's see, Jerry Langston says.
- 20:42I see you wanting to giggle, lol.
- 20:44I'm just brutally honest. I appreciate that.
- 20:47I appreciate the honesty from, from Carl Edwards.
- 20:49I, I think he was, he was fair in his criticism, but he wasn't
- 20:54biting in his criticism. And I get that because he's a
- 20:58dude who, look, it was 8-9 years ago, He's just now getting into
- 21:03the good graces of NASCAR. He doesn't want to absolutely
- 21:07RIP them, even though deep down he was being much nicer than he
- 21:11actually feels. Let's be honest.
- 21:13And This is why I'll say it again.
- 21:15At one point in the interview with Dale Earnhardt Junior, he
- 21:17said, I'm kind of wondering. I'm kind of wondering how honest
- 21:21I want to be. And that that tells you right
- 21:24there all you need to know. And again, he he did say flat
- 21:28out he thought the championship was snatched from him.
- 21:31And he said, look, we know it's a fact.
- 21:34And he's talked to NASCAR people who admitted they were throwing
- 21:37those cautions back in the day to re rack the field to make it
- 21:42more entertaining for the TV ratings and all that.
- 21:45But he also said, look, he he understood that to a certain
- 21:48extent because they are in the entertainment business, right?
- 21:53Even if he didn't like it. And I think most people would
- 21:56would agree, though this, this was the most egregious time
- 22:00where people really thought it was truly, truly unfair and that
- 22:04NASCAR was going out of their way.
- 22:08Well, I shouldn't say that knowingly or unknowingly, they
- 22:12clearly impacted a championship that season.
- 22:16I'm not saying that's what they wanted the end result to be.
- 22:21I'm not trying to say it's this grand conspiracy theory.
- 22:24But what they did in re racking the field with that, as people
- 22:29call it, fake caution, it did impact the championship.
- 22:31And look, Kenny Wallace said this was it 3 years ago, right?
- 22:36I mean, he said that Carl Edwards left NASCAR with a
- 22:39broken heart. And that video was actually
- 22:42popping a little bit yesterday. That's, that's still our biggest
- 22:46video on YouTube. It was, I think maybe, maybe May
- 22:52or June of three years ago, so not quite three years ago.
- 22:55And that video is pushing, it's not that close to 1,000,000
- 22:59views, but it's over 900. I think it's like 930,000 views.
- 23:02That's still our most popular video on this channel.
- 23:05That just goes to show you too of, of, of just the, the
- 23:08mystery, the mystique, the intrigue that people had for
- 23:11Carl Edwards over the last eight years or so.
- 23:15But then really, as he's coming back, he's doing media, he's
- 23:19doing interviews now he's going to do TV, which by the way, I
- 23:22think he's going to be absolutely fantastic at TVI
- 23:25think he's going to be really, really good.
- 23:27And also, if you're a dude who has all the money in the world,
- 23:30right, you do other things. You want to be around your
- 23:32family, but now you can also bring your family to the tracks.
- 23:35I think he's what is he doing 5 races?
- 23:38And to me, if you're somebody who doesn't have to work, but
- 23:40you still want to be involved in the sport, isn't this five race
- 23:44deal, whatever they're doing with Amazon, Isn't that the
- 23:46perfect way to jump back in? You don't have to do every race.
- 23:49You don't have to travel 3540 weeks a year.
- 23:53You can do 5 races, have fun. And and hey, if you love it,
- 23:57maybe you want to do a little more work next year, right?
- 24:01OK, let's see. Full throttle RP says I cried
- 24:06watching and understanding how he was screwed over on his
- 24:10championship. Very sad.
- 24:13Let's see Gibb Salisbury says it's ridiculous that a candy
- 24:17wrapper on the track will cause a caution, right?
- 24:20And this is what was going on back in the day.
- 24:22Obviously, you can't do that anymore, although there's still,
- 24:26there's still a lot of discussion about NASCAR throwing
- 24:29caution. This was more so at Daytona, the
- 24:31Daytona weekend. But this is for safety, right?
- 24:33It's more about, and I understand how fans, they want
- 24:38to see folks race to the checkered flag, but also look,
- 24:43if you don't throw the caution, all of a sudden guys are flying
- 24:46through and they're still cars trying to get out of the way.
- 24:49And then you have the the cool down lap.
- 24:50You could have some really terrible outcomes from that as
- 24:53well. If you don't throw a caution.
- 24:55NASCAR is in a really, really tough spot there when they have
- 24:59to make an absolutely split second decision on the final lap
- 25:04most of the time, right and and people aren't going to be happy.
- 25:08You want to have the best possible finish, you want to
- 25:11have the most fair finish. But also at the end of the day,
- 25:14the driver's safety is the number one concern.
- 25:19Dave Milam says nicely done, good job.
- 25:24And Manga 12 says sometimes the cautions are excessive.
- 25:27For sure. Steve D says Dale gets the best
- 25:31interviews. He does.
- 25:33But it's not just Dale getting the best interviews right.
- 25:36Dale does a really good job when he's interviewing these folks
- 25:40and, and I'll just be honest with you, now that I'm kind of
- 25:44full time in the NASCAR world, I try to consume as much as
- 25:48possible. But I will say I don't listen to
- 25:51as many of the real long form interviews as I should.
- 25:55If I'm, if I'm on a car trip, if I'm by myself, like I remember I
- 25:59had a car trip by myself and I listened to the Scott Bloomquist
- 26:03interview with with Dale Junior and Mike Davis.
- 26:07This was what last last year right after Scott Bloomquist
- 26:11passed away. But I consume most The Dirty MO
- 26:13media stuff from the clips right on social media for me, usually
- 26:18X or on on YouTube. But if if there's a an interview
- 26:23that like this, this was the interview, right?
- 26:26And Dale Junior said that this was the interview Carl Edwards
- 26:29that everybody had been clamoring for for years.
- 26:32And they finally did it and they did it right, even though it was
- 26:36a remote deal, right? Carl Edwards was in Columbia and
- 26:39Dale Junior was wherever he's at.
- 26:41He wasn't, he wasn't in studio, but it was really well done.
- 26:45It was the right length of time. Again, it was with the ads and
- 26:49all that. It was almost two hours long.
- 26:50So you, you felt like every question that needed to be asked
- 26:55for this, for this first interview, right?
- 26:57This first big interview, obviously you have to get out of
- 27:00the way, not even get out of the way.
- 27:02It's what people want to here and see you.
- 27:05You have to talk about Carl Edwards leaving the sport.
- 27:07I mean, that's, that's the number one story.
- 27:10But they hit on so many different things over the course
- 27:13of the the almost two hours. But yeah, Dale Junior gets the
- 27:16best interviews, but he's also a really good interviewer.
- 27:19It, it just felt like 2 buddies and it was a therapy session and
- 27:24they, they kind of challenged each other if they didn't like a
- 27:27certain answer. I remember at one point after
- 27:30Carl initially described what happened and he said it was kind
- 27:34of like God's plan type deal. And I'm paraphrasing, but Dale
- 27:38Junior challenged him saying, I just, I don't know if I can, you
- 27:41know, I don't know if I can believe that I, I don't know.
- 27:43And, and he wasn't saying you're lying, but he's saying like,
- 27:45give me more. We, we got to get into this
- 27:47more. I, I don't think you can just
- 27:48say nine years later that this was God's plan.
- 27:51Like we got it. We got to talk about how you
- 27:54were really feeling your emotions back then and then also
- 27:57now 8-9 years later. Let's see.
- 28:02Let's see what we got here. A lot of comments coming in.
- 28:05David Carter says this was one of the most moving, interesting
- 28:10interviews I've ever seen. Dale Earnhardt.
- 28:13I enjoyed every second of it. I've always been a Carl Edwards
- 28:15fan. Yeah, I think, I think it's my
- 28:17favorite. It might be I I shouldn't say my
- 28:20favorite because I got to say Kenny Wallace's interviews are
- 28:23my favorite. But in terms of the Dale Junior
- 28:25download any content that I've heard from them and they've done
- 28:28all kinds of fantastic stuff. I, I think this was the best
- 28:31interview I ever heard NASCAR related, honestly.
- 28:35But it's also because, look, Dale's a great interviewer.
- 28:39He got Carl Edwards, right? It was the first, he's the first
- 28:41guy to get Carl Edwards. And everything was on the table
- 28:45and Carl Edwards sat down there and for 90 minutes, 100 minutes,
- 28:50whatever it was, really kind of poured his heart out, but also
- 28:53just explained detail by detail all of his decision making.
- 28:59When I say all, I say most. I, I still think deep down he
- 29:02probably has a lot of anger, Surely had a a lot more back in
- 29:06the day. But he didn't want to absolutely
- 29:08destroy NASCAR. But I'm sure there's some things
- 29:11he held back. And look, that's how we all
- 29:14would be right if we felt we were royally screwed or in his
- 29:17words, that the championship was was snatched from him.
- 29:21Let's see, we got Matthew McDonald says the DJD Dale
- 29:25Junior download interviews are awesome.
- 29:27Also the Stapleton 42 hometown history vids.
- 29:30Yeah, Mitch Stapleton's great are great too.
- 29:32Will be great if Dirty MO Media and Mitch Logan could do a
- 29:35collab. Yeah, but they're also doing
- 29:38their own thing, man. They're they're both super
- 29:40successful doing their own thing.
- 29:42So sometimes you don't mess with that.
- 29:45Also, let's see, Denver Thurston says can NASCAR give Carl
- 29:53Edwards Daytona 500 start as a way to send him off grand style
- 29:56with him some sense of pride back that lost when left the
- 30:00sport? OK, first of all, we need to
- 30:02type that better, all due respect.
- 30:04OK, we need to add some words there, Denver.
- 30:07But look, there's no way because Carl Edwards was talking about
- 30:11his health. His wife's a doctor, right?
- 30:13If Carl Edwards does do a one off race, which I wouldn't rule
- 30:16out, there ain't no way in hell he's doing a superspeedway,
- 30:19right? There's no way he's doing the
- 30:20Daytona 500. He'll do something shorter
- 30:23because again, talking about injuries and anything can happen
- 30:28at a superspeedway. The worst we know could happen
- 30:30at a superspeedway. So if Carl Edwards does a one
- 30:33off race, I would almost guarantee you there's no chance
- 30:35it's at a superspeedway. Dale Junior brought up Bristol,
- 30:39so maybe someplace like that. All right, we're over 30
- 30:42minutes. I'm going to shut it down.
- 30:43Thank you so much, you guys. Just want to give my comments on
- 30:47the interview. I thought it was fantastic.
- 30:49Thank you so much for joining me.
- 30:52I'll go to Steve B here at the end.
- 30:55I think Carl's only passion now is sailing, to be honest, right?
- 30:58So Carl Edwards talked about sailing, boating, whatever you
- 31:01want to call it a lot at the beginning of that interview.
- 31:04And Sean Murphy says it was a great interview.
- 31:06Yes, it was. All right, thank you very much,
- 31:08guys. Comment like subscribe if you
- 31:11haven't checked it out, Dale Junior download with Carl
- 31:13Edwards. I highly recommend it on podcast
- 31:16or here on YouTube as well. All right, have a great weekend
- 31:20everybody, love you all. Thanks.
- 31:23We'll see you soon here on the Kenny Wallace YouTube channel
- 31:26and Kenny Wallace media. Charlie Marlow signing off.
