- 0:00Speaker 1: Final segment with Coach Cav before we talk to Joey
- 0:03Speaker 1: Muldowney and Mike Murtag. We talked about Joey. I mean, look,
- 0:08Speaker 1: you raved about Murtag last year. He got lost in
- 0:11Speaker 1: the shuffle because you had so much talent two years ago.
- 0:13Speaker 1: He really took off last year. What are your expectations
- 0:18Speaker 1: for the suburban Albany native whose brother happens to play
- 0:23Speaker 1: up the road?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Mike is, you know, he was elected a captain last,
- 0:30Speaker 2: He's a blood and guts player. He's going to play
- 0:34Speaker 2: in a lot of situations for us this year. He
- 0:36Speaker 2: took over a role at center last year. I thought
- 0:39Speaker 2: he got much better on face-offs as the season went on.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So we expect him to be killing penalties, playing on
- 0:46Speaker 2: a power play unit, playing a regular shift. He's a
- 0:49Speaker 2: staple on our five on six. And I just love
- 0:54Speaker 2: his leadership qualities. I think he comes in every day.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And what you see is what you get. He never
- 1:00Speaker 2: takes a day off. And I think that's contagious throughout
- 1:04Speaker 2: our team.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Is it more by example with Mike versus some other
- 1:08Speaker 1: guys you've had?
- 1:09Speaker 2: I would say primarily leads by example, but he's not
- 1:13Speaker 2: afraid to speak up either.
- 1:16Speaker 1: What about Joey? What are his leadership qualities that you've seen?
- 1:19Speaker 1: I mean, look, he's learned from some really good guys
- 1:21Speaker 1: over the last few years.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Joey's very measured. You know, he doesn't get too high
- 1:26Speaker 2: or too low. And I think that's a great quality
- 1:29Speaker 2: to have because our players, if anything goes bad, they're
- 1:33Speaker 2: going to look at the leader. When things are going good,
- 1:35Speaker 2: they look at the leader. And when the leader is
- 1:38Speaker 2: pretty even keel all the time, I think that's a
- 1:41Speaker 2: great way to be. He doesn't get too high in
- 1:43Speaker 2: the highs. He doesn't get too low in the lows.
- 1:46Speaker 2: It's like this is how we have to play, and
- 1:48Speaker 2: we just have to do this day in and day out.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Don't get fixated on the result. Get fixated on our performance.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And Joey epitomizes that.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Mike, one thing that this program seems to have is
- 2:01Speaker 1: a blue collar hockey mentality. You don't get a ton
- 2:06Speaker 1: of number ones, like say BU, BC, those guys, but
- 2:09Speaker 1: what you do get is you turn them into high
- 2:13Speaker 1: quality hockey players that may get drafted late, may get
- 2:17Speaker 1: an undrafted look in the NHL. Mark Gatcombe is, is
- 2:21Speaker 1: certainly case of that. Um, What are you most proud of,
- 2:24Speaker 1: what you, Tyler, and the coaching staff that you've had
- 2:27Speaker 1: in the past and even the present here, what are
- 2:29Speaker 1: you most proud of in developing these guys? Because you
- 2:32Speaker 1: have a ton of experience in this, obviously.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Well, I think we do a good job developing them
- 2:37Speaker 2: and giving them every opportunity to continue their career when
- 2:42Speaker 2: they leave here. And as you mentioned, with Viking and
- 2:47Speaker 2: Mark Gackholm, they've seen NHL games here recently. And then
- 2:53Speaker 2: neither one of them were drafted. But on top of that,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you look at Chase Bradley and Ryan Torberg. They were
- 2:59Speaker 2: seventh round picks. Not many seventh round picks play in
- 3:02Speaker 2: the NHL. They've both played in the NHL recently. And
- 3:08Speaker 2: then we've had first round picks that have played in
- 3:10Speaker 2: the NHL as well. Whether you're a first rounder or
- 3:13Speaker 2: a seventh rounder, we try to develop you so when
- 3:15Speaker 2: you leave here, you can continue to play the game
- 3:19Speaker 2: at a high level. And on top of that, What
- 3:22Speaker 2: we're most proud of, I think we've developed them as
- 3:25Speaker 2: fine young men. And I think that's really important when
- 3:28Speaker 2: you leave here as well, because not everyone's going to
- 3:30Speaker 2: get the chance to play in the NHL. And if
- 3:32Speaker 2: it means Matt Pasquale, who went down to Wall Street
- 3:36Speaker 2: and he's killing it down on Wall Street, I'd like
- 3:38Speaker 2: to think that, you know, we helped develop him and
- 3:41Speaker 2: prepare him for that as well.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That's more important than anything they do on the ice.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Same thing with Gino. He does the same thing. There's
- 3:49Speaker 1: a path. And you've got a lot of economics guys
- 3:51Speaker 1: or financial guys, I notice, on your hockey team. There's
- 3:54Speaker 1: just something special about that. You have two new coaches. Well,
- 3:58Speaker 1: certainly one, Sean Walsh, comes in, and he's got that DNA.
- 4:02Speaker 1: His dad was the legendary main coach before passing away unexpectedly.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But tell me about what he's brought to the program.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, he's a tireless recruiter. And already for the month
- 4:13Speaker 2: of September, he's probably been on the road for, I
- 4:16Speaker 2: don't know, 22 of the 30 days of September. So
- 4:21Speaker 2: he has that passion for recruiting, which is certainly, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: great players make good coaches. So that's what we got
- 4:28Speaker 2: to continue to do is bring in really good players here.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And then Ryan Shannon, you know, played for me at
- 4:34Speaker 2: Boston College, another undrafted guy who made the NHL and
- 4:37Speaker 2: won a Stanley Cup. He had played over in Switzerland
- 4:42Speaker 2: after that. And Austin Matthews lived with him for a
- 4:45Speaker 2: while when he was over in Switzerland. So when the
- 4:48Speaker 2: year before Austin Matthews got drafted, he's got a ton
- 4:51Speaker 2: of experience. He's played with Chris Pronger. He's played with
- 4:55Speaker 2: Scott Niedermeyer, Taimou Salani, all sorts of great players throughout
- 4:59Speaker 2: his career. So I think he brings a wealth of
- 5:03Speaker 2: knowledge about the game. And for those who want to
- 5:07Speaker 2: take their game to the next level, I think he
- 5:10Speaker 2: can certainly help them get there.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That's fabulous. Penn State Friday. They've lost five of their
- 5:17Speaker 1: top six scores from a year ago, including Gavin McKenna,
- 5:20Speaker 1: the number one overall pick. But they're still Penn State.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And it's going to be a formidable challenge right out
- 5:26Speaker 1: of the gate, along with Bowling Green on Saturday. Let's
- 5:28Speaker 1: not forget that as part of the icebreaker as Penn
- 5:31Speaker 1: State and Bowling Green will flip-flop between UConn and Sacred
- 5:34Speaker 1: Heart this weekend.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, no question. Guy's a proven coach in the NCAA
- 5:39Speaker 2: for a long time, whether it was at Princeton or
- 5:41Speaker 2: at Penn State. He's always had successful teams. They're usually
- 5:45Speaker 2: high octane. We're going to have to manage the puck
- 5:47Speaker 2: well because they can get up and down the ice.
- 5:50Speaker 2: They got a first rounder in Jackson Smith. Guy's son
- 5:54Speaker 2: was an All-American a couple of years ago. They're going
- 5:57Speaker 2: to be a really good team. They have some good transfers. So,
- 6:01Speaker 2: I know they're going to be a very tough opponent.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And then I've known Dennis Williams for a long, long time.
- 6:06Speaker 2: He's at Bowling Green, and he's just won wherever he's
- 6:09Speaker 2: gone as a coach. I've watched his teams play. I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 2: they outshot Michigan 23-7 on Monday night at their place.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Very hard-fought game. They lost 4-3. Michigan's the top team
- 6:20Speaker 2: in the country. We'll have two very quality opponents coming
- 6:24Speaker 2: in here, and we're going to have to be at
- 6:26Speaker 2: the top of our game if we want to win
- 6:27Speaker 2: the icebreaker.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yep, first three weeks, not easy. That, two with Colorado College,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and then BU to start.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Peace, Cam, right? Tell me what week is easy, Bob.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the life of Hockey East. Cav, always a pleasure,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and we look forward to doing this again in a
- 6:43Speaker 1: few weeks, hopefully live somewhere, and I'll see you Friday night.
- 6:46Speaker 2: That'd be great. Thanks, Bob. I appreciate it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Mike Cavanaugh, the head coach of the Ice Bus, coming
- 6:51Speaker 1: up as captains as we continue on the UConn Hockey
- 6:53Speaker 1: Coaches Show in a moment here on Learfield.
