Latest / Conversations: Special Guests with Preston Scott / FSU Gets Snubbed By College Football Playoff Committee
Transcript
- 0:07Well, here we go. It's the third and final hour of the morning
- 0:10show with Preston Scott and Preston. That's Grant. Good to be with you
- 0:13this morning, and I'm wearing black. It's never happened before. And all
- 0:18the apologies for the SEC are writing in, and that's fine. You're welcome
- 0:22to do that. There's a built in bias for the SEC and the College
- 0:25Football Playoff Committee. It was exhibited over the final weeks of the season,
- 0:30it was ushered in in the committee meetings, and for the first time in
- 0:35the history of this ridiculous format, an unbeaten conference champion has not been in
- 0:43the College Football Playoff. And you can try to explain that all you want,
- 0:48and tell me about how much better Alabama is and how their strength of
- 0:52schedule is so much better. And the bottom line is they didn't win all
- 0:56their games and FSU did and that's what's supposed to cat out. But we
- 1:00are joined to talk about this with the managing editor of war Chair dot Com,
- 1:06Irish Chafelle. I'm over it. I am absolutely over it. When
- 1:10you got the news yesterday, when you saw what happened, what was your
- 1:11reaction? You know, it's one of those things where you see something coming.
- 1:17You know, maybe in a relationship, you just have a feeling something's
- 1:19going the wrong way, but you don't know for sure, and you're hoping
- 1:23it's not going to happen, and then it happens, and it's just like
- 1:26you realize you've been living a lie. And I think that that's what this
- 1:29whole system has been. I honestly believe, and I'll write this, I
- 1:33honestly believe that Jordan Travis's day is healthy. Florida State was going to get
- 1:36left out. I think they've been They've been paving the road to this for
- 1:38six weeks with that selection committee, and I think Florida State wasn't gonna end
- 1:42because they knew they were going to have at least one you know, they
- 1:47were gonna have at least one loss SEC team that they wanted to get in.
- 1:51And I think that that was going to happen no matter what. I'm
- 1:53going to say what a lot of people are theorizing for different reasons, but
- 1:57I'm just going to ask, how big of a role do you think ESPN
- 2:01played in this? Oh? There's no question. I mean, the whole
- 2:05process is you know that show is owned by ESPN. The whole processes and
- 2:09really that's what you know, kind of all this goes back to if you
- 2:13look back to the last you know, a few years, especially since the
- 2:15playoff was started, and then also with you know, some of the expansion
- 2:20moves, you know, with the SEC picking up Texas and Oklahoma and the
- 2:23Big Ten going out and getting USC and UCLA. But the whole idea is
- 2:27they're going to assemble these two power conferences and then they're going to stack the
- 2:31deck to where all their teams getting the playoff. And and the people that
- 2:36sit here and say, some people in the media have said, oh,
- 2:38the ACC should have fought to or are gone along with the idea of going
- 2:42to a twelve team playoff earlier, Well, what's that going to look like?
- 2:45There's going to be five SEC teams, five Pig Ten teams, the
- 2:47ACC champion, and maybe the Big twelve champion. I mean, this is
- 2:53I'm not going to say it's a death bload of the sport, but it's
- 2:55a it's a retal, it's a five star alarm that you know, if
- 3:00you're not one of those two conferences, you don't belong in the college football
- 3:02playoffs. I've been talking about the fact ira that, you know, the
- 3:07NFL for what it is, has it right. The teams that have the
- 3:14records that get to the playoffs get to play, and the teams that quote
- 3:17have the eye test administered to them frequently don't win the Super Bowl. That
- 3:22just isn't how it happens. Does college football have to go to that point
- 3:27where we don't have SEC Big ten acc we have East West, North South,
- 3:32and we have divisions and you get relegated and you get it's a little
- 3:36premier league type thing in soccer. Yeah, I mean I think that that's
- 3:40kind of where a lot of people think it man up going in and it
- 3:44has to, you know, I really think it has to. I think
- 3:45this is another sign that that's what's needed, because the way it is right
- 3:49now, you're you know, you're going to have these two power conferences,
- 3:52which is what it's become, that are controlling everything and everybody else is just
- 3:55kind of second class citizen. And unless you have one governing body oversees all
- 4:00of it, you know, you're you're always going to situations like this,
- 4:02and you know it's frustrating. Also, is you know who the whole premise
- 4:06when they went to this premise of we're going to have a committee to pick
- 4:10the best teams because we don't want to be stuck where we have to take
- 4:13a team that's not worthy. Well, the idea behind that is, I
- 4:16get it. If you've got an ACC champion in a year where it's a
- 4:19bad ACC and they don't play anybody, say they played four bad non conference
- 4:25teams, I think it's it's fine to have a committee at the end that
- 4:27says, you know what, you didn't schedule anybody, and you come from
- 4:30not the strongest league, and so we're gonna, you know, we're not
- 4:32going to let you in. Florida State scheduled LSU and Florida out of conference,
- 4:36and they they weren't undefeated, and it wasn't a bad ACC. The
- 4:41ACC actually had a better record against the SEC. The SEC had a bad
- 4:45record against Power five schools. So it's just it's incomprehensible. But again it's
- 4:47just proof that they were going to do with what they wanted to do,
- 4:50no matter what. Use Traffic, Weather, Sports, Entertainment and the Truth.
- 4:56The Morning Show with Preston Scott on News Radio one hundred points WFLA Iras
- 5:05Chaffell with us from more chan dot com. We're talking about the obvious,
- 5:11and that is the snub for the first time ever of an undefeated conference champion.
- 5:16And you know, Ira, you listed scheduling two non conference teams.
- 5:21I'd point out that that's why Liberty is ranked in the top twenty five,
- 5:27not in the top ten, because they didn't play anybody. You can't help
- 5:31the conference you're in. But I point to not just that. I point
- 5:36to beating Clemson at Clemson. Nobody else did that this year. And I
- 5:42point to the fact that they have eight teams that are Bowl eligible. I
- 5:46point to Alabama needing a miracle to beat a team that got boat raced by
- 5:49New Mexico State in Auburn. I mean, we could go on and on
- 5:54and on. What do you think are the most compelling reasons FSU should have
- 5:59been in this be on thirteen and oh, I think they're countless. And
- 6:04honestly, this is where you know, and it's not gonna make for a
- 6:08great radio for you, But I don't even I don't even want to make
- 6:12the argument anymore because it's ridiculous. There's no defense for what they did.
- 6:15There's no there's no parsing. Okay, this was this or this was that.
- 6:19This was all about Once they knew they were going to have a one
- 6:23lost Alabama, but they lost to Texas. I think they decided, we're
- 6:26going to do everything we can to beat down every other team that's got a
- 6:30resume, and if they don't lose, the great you know, look,
- 6:32if they lose, then they're out. If Florida State loses, then they're
- 6:34out right. But if they don't, then we've been beating them down publicly
- 6:40for two months and we'll be able to keep them out anyway. And I
- 6:42think that was always going to happen. So, you know, to me,
- 6:45this wasn't I don't believe this was a legitimate decision. This was not
- 6:48where we where we got to go make an argument. This was a choice
- 6:51they made weeks ago. Well and it's and and that is buttressed by the
- 6:57fact that you know, FSU not only did they take care of business,
- 7:01but they would they were going to get left out. If Georgia had beat
- 7:05Alabama, Texas was still going to jump them. It wouldn't have mattered one
- 7:11bit whether Jordan Travis was the quarterback or not. I don't think. No,
- 7:15I agree one hundred percent if Wargan was going to get in, if
- 7:18they could get in or Washing No, I mean, yeah, no,
- 7:20I agree. It was the SEC schools were going to get in. And
- 7:24you know why it is. You know, you can make a couple of
- 7:27different theories there, but I think a big one is, you know they're
- 7:30there. They were not going to let the conferences that they that they can
- 7:33see, that they consider that their partners with that they believe are the top
- 7:38conferences left out of the discussion for a month because the playoff games don't happen
- 7:42until January, so you'd have a month where the SEC would have been left
- 7:45out of the conversation. They weren't going to let that happen. But yeah,
- 7:46no, I agree with you. I think you know that's that's the
- 7:50way it was going to go. I mean, Floridas Day was screwed no
- 7:53matter what. Ira. I'm a I'm a fan of sports. You know
- 7:56that that's where our ven diagram intersects. I live in the political world as
- 8:03well with what I do professionally. I'm gonna drill down deeper on the ESPN
- 8:07thing. How deep do you think this could possibly go. Could this literally
- 8:11go back to ESPNS owned by Disney and Disney hates Governor Rohn de Santas.
- 8:18I mean, I understand that that's out there and some people believe that,
- 8:20and you know, maybe I don't know. I don't think so though.
- 8:24I really think it's more about college football. But but the you know,
- 8:28the bottom line is you mentioned a school like Liberty and they have a you
- 8:33know, those schools in those group of five schools they know the deal,
- 8:37you know, and if a player signs with those schools, they know the
- 8:39deal. They know that something great is going to have to happen for them
- 8:43to get in the playoffs. Their path is very narrow for these Power five
- 8:46schools. If you sign with a Power five school, you believe you've got
- 8:50just as good a chance as anybody. And this is gonna have long term
- 8:52implications on any school that's not in the Big ten of the SEC, because
- 8:54you're gonna feel like, why would I go to that school if there's a
- 8:58very slim chance of competing for a national championship. So I don't know what
- 9:01the motivations are any whether it's intentional or unintentional, but basically, what they've
- 9:07done. Is they're relegating any conference, any school in any conference it's not
- 9:11the SEC or the Big Ten to second tier status, and that's gonna have
- 9:15long term implications. Last question, looking ahead, I don't expect anything less
- 9:20from Mike Norvelle than what he said. This is adversity. We're gonna have
- 9:24to deal with it. What happened was wrong, et cetera. How many
- 9:28of the guys that played in the ACC title game do you think are gonna
- 9:33play against Georgia. That's a great question. You know, if I had
- 9:39to guess, I'd say maybe eighty percent. Eighty five percent. You're gonna
- 9:43have because you're gonna have two different situations. You're gonna have the guys who
- 9:48want to go, you know, they look they the guys who are gonna
- 9:50go to the NFL, the high draft picks, the Jared Versus and Trade
- 9:52Benson's and Kean Colemans, Johnny Wilson's those guys if they're gonna go, if
- 9:56they've already got, if they're getting agents and they're gonna go, the agents
- 10:01a lot of times are going to tell them, look, you can't go
- 10:01play in this college football game because we need to get ready for the NFL
- 10:05Draft, and so even if they want to play, a lot of those
- 10:07guys are gonna be advised to not play. Then you're gonna have a bunch
- 10:11of other guys who who think they're gonna go to a different school. They
- 10:15want to go on the transfer portal because of either opportunities or nil money at
- 10:18other schools. So you're gonna lose those guys as well. So, yeah,
- 10:22I think it's gonna be a very different looking team. George is gonna
- 10:26be the same way. And you know, but the reality is we all
- 10:28this has been happening for a while now. Florida State's been kind of inoculated
- 10:33from it because Florida State was so bad when all this kind of happened with
- 10:35the transfer portal. Yeah, here, Florida State was just happy to get
- 10:39into a bowl game. And then last year you think about all the guys
- 10:41that played in that game against Oklahoma, Well that was because Florida State was
- 10:45on the way up. Well now they're up, and now they're gonna see
- 10:48what these other schools see when when you don't make the playoffs, the ball
- 10:50game is is you know, seen as meaningless ramifications of the decision yesterday.
- 10:56Extend all right, Ira, thanks so very much. I appreciate all the
- 11:01contributions during the season, and we'll talk again post Bowl game. Thanks pressing,
- 11:05Thank you. Irischaffelle with us from warchan dot com seventeen past the hour
