High Court rules Shas leader Deri cannot serve as minister
The High Court of Justice has ruled 10-1 that Shas party leader Aryeh Deri cannot serve as a government minister, saying his multiple convictions make his appointment unreasonable in the extreme. The court noted that in his February, 2022 conviction in a plea bargain for tax offenses, Deri gave the presiding court the impression he was leaving public life. Coalition members assailed the ruling, and vowed to step up efforts to advance a government reform of the judiciary that would restraint the court.
