- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the embodiment lab.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: My name is Addy, and today's episode is going to look a little bit different.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: But before we get into that, I'm going to preface just like I did in the last episode.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: I'm actually filming back-to-back episodes today because my brain is on fire.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And we're going to take advantage of that.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And so I'm pumping out podcast episodes for you, which is super exciting.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: But I'm on my porch.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And if you hear outside noises, birds, cars, whatever AC units, anything, my apologies.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: But I just needed to work outside today and just look at the blue sky and the green trees and allow the cats to sit on the porch and enjoy the day.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: But we're going to do a little, little different episode today.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm considering making this a little bit of a series, but I'm doing this on TikTok and Instagram, where I'm actually starting up a Bible study.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not leading it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I'm in a Bible study group.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And it started up last night, actually.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And I believe it goes for nine weeks.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And I am bringing a journal with me to these Bible studies.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And I'm taking notes on anything that anybody says that really stands out to me, perspective shifts, thoughts that I have.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And I'm challenging myself to make a piece of content every single week based off of the notes and the thoughts that I had from the Bible study.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm posting that on Instagram and on TikTok.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And I decided I want to dive in deeper on the podcast as well.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Because I really think that a lot of what we're talking about can really relate to like it can really translate to fitness and mindset.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Because a lot of fitness is your mindset.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And so I really want to see if this can be helpful for even just one of you.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: If one of you can have a takeaway from this, then I will consider my job done.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Because yeah, I just really want to share this and I really want to dive into this.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I feel like this is something that I don't really talk about very often.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And I want to challenge myself to expand and talk about just a bunch of different things, a bunch of different topics.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And so that's what we're going to do.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: But what I love about this particular Bible study, it's through my church.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And I did a group with this leader in the spring.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And she went through another book that I absolutely loved in that um, in that season.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: But this season we're going through a different book, kind of on a similar topic as the last one that we did.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: But this book is called The Lie You Don't Know You Believe.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I think it's by Jenny Allen.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I think that's how you pronounce her name.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And yesterday I sat down to read the first chapter, and I really felt like this was speaking to my specific season of life that I'm in, where I feel like I'm going through all of these challenges, and I feel like I'm getting punched in like many different directions.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I'm getting things like yanked from me, and I'm in a place where I feel like I need to rebuild.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And I need it's like a big growth season, and I feel like there with all of this stuff happening, there's been lots of thoughts of am I good enough?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Am I smart enough?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Am I worthy?
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And all of these things I'm learning are lies that I'm telling myself.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we're going to get into all of those things, but there are a lot of things that you tell yourself that aren't actually true.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: They are lies.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: And the more that you tell yourself them, the more that you believe them accidentally, unintentionally, and then it becomes a part of your identity.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: And then you get stuck in this fixed mindset where that's just how you're living.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And we're going to just talk about all of the things.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So I don't remember if I mentioned, but this is probably going to go on for about nine weeks.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: And so I want to challenge myself to record a podcast episode after every time that we meet for the Bible study.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So that'll be nine episodes.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And I don't want to upload these like back to back to back.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll upload an extra one a couple weeks.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: So there'll be two podcasts in one week.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll upload one every other week and the episodes will extend beyond my time in this Bible study.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: I don't exactly know how I'm going to do it, but I'm just going to hit record each time and just give you all of my thoughts.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: So the first thing that I want to do is I want to just go through some of the things that I underlined in the book itself, and then I'll get into my actual notes.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So, like I said, I've just read the first chapter, and what I have underlined, so let me just flip to the page real quick, was that when you live under the pull of these lies, you don't just suffer, you also miss your calling.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: The unique work God designed specifically for you remains undone.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And this is so crazy to me because I'm having these feelings of doubt.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: I've had a lot of doubt this summer, which has led me to think maybe I'm not meant to do what I'm doing.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'm not in the right field.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Maybe I need to switch up.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Maybe like I'm just not good at this.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what this is saying is you don't just suffer because of these thoughts.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: These thoughts lead you to take actions that aren't actually necessary.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: So you're missing your calling.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: I also know, like at the very core of who I am, like I am where I need to be.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: I have felt exactly the effects of the work that I do in my own personal life.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I've seen it change so many clients' lives that like I feel so called that this is what I'm meant to be doing.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And how dare I let these lies that I'm telling myself lead me to walk away from that?
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Like, that's actually terrifying to think that these thoughts have that much control over me.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And so that was a really, really big, like, ooh, we got chills, like kind of moment that I wanted to share with you.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: And then the second thing I have underlined is it's talking about darkness and not just like the darkness of night, but like darkness with a capital D that controls this world.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: So, like the devil, Satan, evil, you know, all of that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And the line that I have underlined says that darkness fights hard to keep you believing the lie because your freedom matters, not just for your peace, but for your purpose, how your life affects the world.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And there was a church sermon that I heard when I still lived in Dallas, and it was talking about how like the the devil will like plant these thoughts in your brain, and how you have to just tell him, like, go away, Satan, go away.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Literally speak to him and tell him to go away because he he has to listen.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And even like in a little Bible study that I used to do with my coworkers when I lived in Dallas, we were talking about this, but I feel like I'm trying to remember the phrase that we would say was, um, oh, in Jesus' name.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Anytime that we had like a negative thought or like you know, anything like that that entered our head, you would just say, in Jesus' name, and the thought has to go away.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: It's like you have to take control, you have to take captive of these thoughts.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Because if you don't, then the darkness is going to fight hard because that's how he wins.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: He knows what you're capable of, he knows what your purpose is in this world, he knows how your life affects the world, and he wants to keep you from your purpose and keep you small, keep you doubting, keep you living in that lie because he wins.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And it's ironic that you're worthless is like the core of a lot of people's lies.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: But you're not worthless, you're worth so much, and so that's what I have underlined in the book, and then I'm not going to go through the notes that I took while we were actually in the group last night.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And the first thing that I have written down is be selfish with your time.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And I was talking about this a little bit.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: It's kind of funny how all of this is lining up.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: But I was talking about this with a client a couple weeks ago, and then I was talking about this in a reel that I made, and I talked about this, I think, in like two podcast episodes ago, how you have to be selfish with your time.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And it's like I was saying in the previous episode where if you don't pour into yourself, you are empty, and you don't have anything to pour into others.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And then when you are empty, that can lead to you being like grumpy, not feeling good, lashing out on others, and just feeling like out of sorts.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And honestly, personally, when I don't spend time for myself, like go to the gym, take care of myself, do my Bible studies in the morning, spend time with myself, spend time with God.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: I feel insane.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: So, like I personally, I need that time.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And I know that there are so many other people that also need time that they're just not giving themselves.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So I encourage you to be selfish with your time.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about what other people think about you spending time in the gym or you saying no to plans to spend time at home doing what you need to do.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Like, be selfish with your time.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: The leader of this group was talking about, because this is like the first group that we did, and of course, she's like prefacing and like um just giving some basic information as we start out the group.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: But there she was mentioning how like there's going to be a couple weeks where you experience like spiritual warfare before coming to the group.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe like randomly before you get in your car to drive to group, you might have like a stomach ache that makes you think, oh, like maybe I need to stay home.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: But that stomach ache came out of absolutely nowhere, and that's just spiritual warfare, or you'll feel tired and like, maybe I just need to stay home tonight.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe I just need to not go.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: That's spiritual warfare working against you to keep you away from Bible study, and that's what she was talking about.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And I see this so many times that there's parallels with fitness.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: This happens a lot where people will hire a coach and then like lose their job, or they'll hire a coach and then they'll get sick or go out of town, or something at work will come up and it'll get really, really hectic.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Because when you're challenging yourself to step into a new identity, a new routine, a new lifestyle, there's always going to be something that comes up that makes you think, am I sure?
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Am I sure about this?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And that's your test.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna go all in?
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Or are you gonna lean out and lean away from challenging yourself and pushing yourself to grow and change and become something better?
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: So that's the first one.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Be selfish with your time.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: The second one is perspective is powerful.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, perspective is so powerful.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: It's like I was saying how I'm in a season of pruning.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm having things like taken away from me to make room for new things.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And it's like I could be over here going, oh my gosh, like I feel like I've lost everything.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm missing a lot of things, I feel like I'm going through a lot.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: It's so hard, it's so hard.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Or I can look at this and be like, how beautiful is it that I have the opportunity to rebuild?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I'm making room for new and wonderful things to come.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: How awesome is that?
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: I think that's so beautiful.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: But an example that one of the girls gave last night was the words of just saying, like, I am sick versus I am recovering, I am healing, I'm getting better.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: You notice how one is like a negative connotation and the other one's positive?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Perspective is so powerful.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Changing your perspective changes how you show up in whatever given moment that it is, and that affects everything.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: The third thing is every time that you say something negative about yourself, you are signing an agreement with those thoughts.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: So saying things like, I'm not good enough, I'm not smart enough, I'm I'm fat, I feel gross, I feel this, I can't show up consistently, I'm not disciplined enough, I'm not this, I'm not that.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: We're signing an agreement with those thoughts.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: And the more that we repeat those thoughts, the more that you believe them.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And I'll give you an example.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Last night when we were talking about this, I had a flashback randomly to fifth grade.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And in fifth grade, I started off the year with this one teacher, and I remember not really particularly loving her.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: She wasn't my favorite.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Now I was 10.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I don't remember why I didn't love her, but I didn't.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: We probably had this teacher for the first month, two months, maybe, and she got injured and then had to have surgery, and so we got a long-term sub.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And I think this long-term sub was only supposed to be with us for like six weeks, but her time kept getting extended and extended and extended, and we ended up being with this sub for the remainder of the year.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: And I was friends with this one girl who really loved the original teacher we had and really did not like the sub that we had.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And me not wanting to rock the boat, not wanting to have a different opinion, agreed with her.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: I hid my original opinion because I just wanted to fit in.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to rock the boat.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: And the more that I kept repeating this lie throughout the year over and over and over again, I believed it.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I genuinely believed that I really loved the original teacher, and that I just did not like this sub that we had, and she was miserable.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: The sub was miserable, apparently.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And then getting out of fifth grade, I had a friend in the grade below me coming up into fifth grade, and she got the same teacher that I originally had the previous year.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And I remember telling her, like, oh my gosh, you're gonna love this teacher.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: She's so great, she's so great.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: And a couple weeks later, this friend came to me and told me, Hey, I'm actually transferring classes because I really don't like this teacher for this reason, this reason, this reason.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: And I went, Oh my gosh.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: I remember I didn't like that teacher either for those reasons.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: I genuinely believed that I loved that teacher because that was the story I kept telling myself, because that was a story I kept telling my friend.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And the same exact thing happens when you tell yourself stories about yourself.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: So be careful about the stories that you're telling yourself.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: The fourth thing is when we believe lies, we tell ourselves, we are sinning against ourselves.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: And this kind of goes back to the previous point, but we are doing ourselves a major disservice when we are talking negatively to ourselves, because it leads us to have a different perspective on how we view ourselves, which then affects how we show up, which then affects how we take care of ourselves, which then affects how our mental health is, our physical health is, which then feeds into those negative thoughts.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And then it's a downward spiral.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Whereas if we were to have a positive thought that feeds into our perspective, how we view ourselves, how we show up for ourselves, and that that feeds into our mental health and our physical health, and then we spiral upwards.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: We want to spiral up.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: We don't want to spiral down.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: And the fifth and final note that I have here is surround yourself with people who bring you back and remind you of God and remind you to look to him.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: My mom is a really good example of this.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Anytime I call her with a crisis or a negative thought or anything that's going on in my life, she always brings me back to God.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: She always reminds me that these thoughts are not coming from God.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: They're not coming from me, they're coming from the devil.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And we just need to tell him, back away, Satan, get away, get out of my head, take control of those thoughts.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: One of my best friends in Texas is also really, really good about this as well.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: But like anytime I bring her a situation, she reminds me of, like, oh, this person in the Bible went through this, this, and this, and God did this and this and this for them.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: And look at how their life turned out.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: And she likes to draw different parallels to different stories from the Bible, to my life and her life, and remind me of verses and encourages me and walks me through different situations.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: And having people like that in your life are so, so, so important and so powerful for just the wellness of your life.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And if you are not surrounded by people like that, or you at least have a couple of those people in your corner, then it's probably really difficult for you to reason with yourself and have more of a positive outlook and perspective on certain situations in your life.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: So that is all the notes that I have from the first chapter and from the first Bible study.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I'm very excited to dive into this and just continue to share my thoughts.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: I'm hoping that this will maybe stick a little bit more in my brain because if I'm having to like share and teach and remember and recall these notes and thoughts that I had from the chapters, that it will like just be more permanent in my brain, which I think is really cool.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Part of like remembering something or studying something or learning something is also teaching.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: And so I think this is really cool.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: But that is going to be it for this episode and the first episode of the series of the lie you don't know you believe.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to keep breaking this down.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: I hope that you enjoyed this episode.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: I hope you took away something really positive from it in terms of like the mindset.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I know this is a little bit different than what I normally do, but I'm excited to dive into it.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: That is going to be it for today's episode.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: I hope you enjoyed, and I will chat with you in the next one.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Bye.
