- 0:02Hour number two welcome back Miller and Condon the Iowa
- 0:05sports radio network on Des Moines sports station one O 6.3
- 0:09KXO Trent and I with you until the top of the hour Off the
- 0:12bench come Lucas and Sean at that time.
- 0:15Still to come bottom of the hour, Bill Seals covers Iowa
- 0:17State for cyclonereport.com, part of the on three network.
- 0:23Mr. Monday night with an appearance Detroit on the road
- 0:26getting about four and a half five against the Ravens.
- 0:29That's still to come as well. Well, fellas, good to talk to
- 0:32you, Bama. Thanks for coming on.
- 0:34Just when I learned how to say Sagapulla Telly's name, my
- 0:38Golden bears go on and get spanked by San Diego State.
- 0:42But that was unbelievable. What a great weekend.
- 0:45Next weekend promises to be even better, but we'll see.
- 0:48They're all great. What they at the end of the day,
- 0:50but we're in conference play now.
- 0:52So it kind of ratchets things up, does it not, fellas?
- 0:56It certainly does seem to. I mean, yeah, we'll still have
- 1:00the odds I guess, or toward the end of the year, you know, the
- 1:03rivalry games that are kind of the the non conference.
- 1:07But yeah, I mean, we're I guess for the what next 8-9 weeks,
- 1:11it's kind of full bore conference matchups, which is
- 1:14what you love. Yep, absolutely.
- 1:15Well, Trent, let's get into it. Let's start with the Big 12
- 1:20Friday night. TCU, Arizona.
- 1:22No, that was last. That was the past week.
- 1:25Who did we watch on Friday night?
- 1:27Oklahoma. State, Oklahoma State going down
- 1:29in flames. I think I had Gundy as the first
- 1:31coach to walk the plank, if memory serves.
- 1:34I'm not sure he will prior to the end of the season, but boy
- 1:38oh boy, that's not good. Your thoughts on what you saw
- 1:41this past weekend from the Big. 12 So what are the big
- 1:44takeaways? I think is what we saw from
- 1:47Kansas and just the dismantling of West Virginia, the Jayhawk
- 1:52team, they were the sheet pick a year ago going into the season,
- 1:56didn't work, lost a lot of close games, didn't click, had some
- 1:59injuries. It comes down to Jalen Daniels
- 2:02health, right? Could have been the hangover
- 2:04from the brawl maybe the week before against Pitt.
- 2:06Maybe. Oh yeah, for them, West
- 2:08Virginia's not very good. I mean, yeah, they they played
- 2:10well in a rivalry game, but they're not very good.
- 2:12But this Kansas team, I think at minimum we need to look at them
- 2:16A. Little bit deeper, yeah.
- 2:17That Missouri team's good and they were up, what was it, 15
- 2:20points on them? Whatever it was early in that
- 2:22football game. I don't think Kansas can get to
- 2:25the conference championship game, but can they win eight
- 2:28games? Can they pull a big upset?
- 2:29Maybe that derails somebody's titles hopes.
- 2:31I think The Jayhawks are a team we have to look at, at least in
- 2:34that kind of. Light Yeah, I I don't disagree.
- 2:36I think that's I think that's accurate on all counts.
- 2:38Bama, what did you take away from the Big 12?
- 2:40Obviously, Texas Tech pounding Utah.
- 2:43Yeah, that was that. You know, that game got away
- 2:45late, man. It was.
- 2:47That was a tough walk first half, there's no question about
- 2:49it. Was it 10?
- 2:51Three, I think. Yeah, 10, three.
- 2:53And, you know, was a good defense, was a bad offense, was
- 2:55a, you know, early kickoff. What was it?
- 2:58I think it was a combination of a lot of factors.
- 3:01And then Texas Tech just, you know, the last I'd seen because
- 3:04I was flipping around. I, you know, I'm, you know, I
- 3:07had a Ken Miller week, you know, flipping around able to, you
- 3:10know, watch whatever I want to. And then all of a sudden I just
- 3:13look at what, 34 to 10? It just got away from them.
- 3:16But but Texas Tech is really good.
- 3:19We talked about it going in and nothing really, nothing really
- 3:23changed my opinion. I think they're right now.
- 3:25You have to consider them the favorite, I guess, in the Big
- 3:2812. I don't know.
- 3:29I don't know how you couldn't. You know, they've got a bye week
- 3:32this week. They still have big games down
- 3:34the road. They got to go to Houston, they
- 3:35got to go to Arizona State. And between those you just
- 3:38mentioned Kansas, a sandwich right in there.
- 3:42You know they so those are I think that's really their
- 3:44stretch right there, you know, at Houston, Kansas, at Arizona
- 3:48State, after that it's Oklahoma State who's putrid.
- 3:51You talked about that. I mean, there's just nothing in
- 3:54that program at Oklahoma State. I don't, I don't know, I guess
- 3:58maybe they're just going to hang on this year and, you know,
- 4:00maybe reduce the buyout a little bit.
- 4:01I don't know how that's going to work with Gundy.
- 4:03But there's just nothing there He doesn't like, he cares.
- 4:05You know, he's doesn't look excited about it anymore.
- 4:08And there's the worst thing that can happen to any, any sports
- 4:13team. And I sat in Nashville
- 4:15yesterday. Watch it.
- 4:16Watch it with the apathy 100%, you know, anger.
- 4:20You'd much rather have anger than apathy.
- 4:22When you get apathy, there's just no getting out of it.
- 4:25So I don't know where they go, but there, that's a pathetic
- 4:28team. TCU really good win you.
- 4:32Know TCU is a team that we got to start talking.
- 4:34I'm with you. I think Trent, right on Kansas
- 4:36and I think we should put TCU in that conversation too. 100% and
- 4:41you know they've got a Friday night game this week, I believe,
- 4:45if I'm reading this right. Is that the Arizona State Friday
- 4:48night? I mean, that's a good one if it
- 4:49is. Yeah, let me, let me.
- 4:52Yes, Fox. Wow 8:00.
- 4:55Excellent Friday night game. Yeah, it.
- 4:57Really. Is yeah, they Yeah.
- 4:59So Hoover's playing, you know, I don't want to say the Heisman
- 5:02level, but he's certainly putting it all Big 12 level, I
- 5:05think, along with, you know, a couple other guys.
- 5:07But yeah, PCU is a is a team. You know, we watched in the
- 5:10week, week one, they kind of dismantled North Carolina and we
- 5:13thought, well, North Carolina is just going to be bad and they
- 5:15are bad. But yeah, I think that's a team.
- 5:18You know, I'm going to give a little credit here and I'll, you
- 5:20know, lead a little crow. Colorado's better than I thought
- 5:23they were going to be this year. Guys are two and two.
- 5:26Listen, they haven't really. I don't I don't know that
- 5:28they're a bowl team. They might could get there, but
- 5:30they're they're I'm not saying they're better without Hunter
- 5:34and Sanders, but they're playing pretty well right now.
- 5:37You know, Salter played pretty well.
- 5:39Not very good. He did They're not very good.
- 5:41So, but I think right now the two teams, if you made me pick a
- 5:44championship game, it probably TCU and Texas Tech, but a lot of
- 5:49teams are still gonna have. Say in that I watched.
- 5:51In Oklahoma State, again, just horrible.
- 5:53I watched Indiana, Illinois for the first half and it was
- 5:56getting out of hand, so I switched over and I watched the
- 5:58entire second-half of Arizona State and Baylor as a hell of a
- 6:00football game. Yeah, it was a really good game,
- 6:03it was. A hell of a football game.
- 6:04Arizona State, they're they're defending champ, I don't think.
- 6:07They're going to get back there. I agree they're going to go down
- 6:10with the fight, but but as Trent said, you got to put Kansas in
- 6:13the mix. As you said, Bama, TCU, don't
- 6:15sleep on them. We're all talking about Texas
- 6:18Tech and obviously Iowa State, where we.
- 6:19Kind of what we thought it was, isn't it?
- 6:21I mean, you know, you're going to have 5-16.
- 6:23Yeah, in the middle. It's just going to.
- 6:24Be and maybe BYU out of it and maybe BYU.
- 6:27We'll see where it goes. That's a weird game, yeah.
- 6:31Big 10 Condon. USC is a title contender.
- 6:35Oh, they can score with anyone. Oh, hello, Yeah.
- 6:38I mean, now I know I like this team coming into the year, kind
- 6:40of that dark horse team I watched start to finish.
- 6:43I had it on. Did you until 2:00 AM Ten O?
- 6:46Clock at 10 O clock kick. Off Yep.
- 6:47And I was there all the way to the end.
- 6:49I walked away. Now, Michigan State was making
- 6:51plays, and that's the thing. USC is not did.
- 6:53Charles play well. It was Childs, yeah, he played
- 6:56well and he also played like garbage because that's what you
- 6:58get every single game out of that guy.
- 7:00He's going to look like the best quarterback in the Big 10 and
- 7:02maybe the 15th best quarterback in the Big 10 inside of a 60
- 7:05minute football game. That's what he did.
- 7:07Again, they scored US. CS got some problems
- 7:09defensively, However, they can score with anybody.
- 7:13Lemon, their top receiver, but he is not alone.
- 7:15They're running the football. This team is going to be a.
- 7:18Problem. Have a good game.
- 7:19Yeah, he was excellent. The whole team offensively, this
- 7:22team is elite. Again, don't know if they have
- 7:24the the defense, but they're in a shootout against Ohio.
- 7:27State the Big 10 for right now. Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State,
- 7:32USC. USC right there on.
- 7:33Indiana might needs to be in their table.
- 7:35I think they do, yeah. I'd have to think about it a
- 7:37little bit more, yeah. That's good, I'm glad you
- 7:39watched that game. Your thoughts on the Big 10
- 7:42Bama? You know, Trent might be on to
- 7:45something a little bit and I'm not going to say that they are
- 7:48elite yet, but you really look at, you know, you just mentioned
- 7:51the top teams, right? What do you got?
- 7:53Ohio State. Oregon.
- 7:55Penn State. State, USC, Indiana.
- 7:58USC, the USC only plays one of those teams.
- 8:01They go to Oregon. They do not play Penn State.
- 8:03They do not play Ohio State. They do not play Indiana.
- 8:06They've got a they go to Illinois this week.
- 8:08Tricky spot. They got a bye week.
- 8:10Yeah, a little tricky. They got a bye week and they
- 8:12host Michigan, who looked a lot better against Nebraska.
- 8:17They go to Notre Dame. I understand, you know, Notre
- 8:20Dame, maybe not what they were, but that's still a tough trip
- 8:22back east again. And they got to buy wheat and
- 8:25they go to Nebraska, They got to play Iowa and they go to Oregon.
- 8:28So look, they they avoid the two top dogs, if you will, to the
- 8:33three top dogs in the Big 10. And then, you know, if you want
- 8:37to throw Indiana in there, I'm not I'm going to have to see a
- 8:39little bit more from Indiana. OK, Was that are they that good?
- 8:42Is Illinois overrated? Maybe a combination of both.
- 8:47The problem with that game, I think, was just Illinois is not
- 8:50built to come back. You know, they get down two or
- 8:53three scores. They're not coming back and that
- 8:55you know, from a from a deficit like that.
- 8:57But boy, Signetti, just man, he just kept the hammer down.
- 8:59Then he was not he was not letting up.
- 9:01He doesn't care, right. He really doesn't care if you're
- 9:05I get the feeling and I don't think he would complain if if
- 9:07this roles were reversed. You know you beat him, didn't.
- 9:10And your score. Had no problem, no.
- 9:13Absolutely. I mean, and you know what,
- 9:15that's so refreshing. It's like, you know, it's our
- 9:17job to stop them. You know, if they're out,
- 9:20whoever they've got out there, it's hard to have to stop them.
- 9:22So do with what you. I thought the Michigan Nebraska
- 9:24game was really a good game. I think Nebraska, I don't think
- 9:28it was as close. No, it wasn't because they had
- 9:33the Nebraska had the Hail Mary. The problem was, yeah, they
- 9:37really couldn't run the ball very well and and that and
- 9:41Michigan did. I mean, you know, Underwood
- 9:43wasn't great. No, you know, it was really
- 9:45good. Was, was Hayne, remember,
- 9:47Remember Trent, when Sip was on with us?
- 9:50He says. My biggest fear is #22 yeah, for
- 9:53Michigan Haynes, the running back.
- 9:55And look what he did. Sip also told us that they have
- 9:57a better offensive line than Iowa.
- 10:00He. Might have gone one for 2.
- 10:03I know one team in the SEC that which is they still had him.
- 10:06Yeah. And that's Alabama.
- 10:08Yeah. You know, he came from there.
- 10:10So he did, yeah. One more thing on the Big 10 for
- 10:13me, and I said it after Week 1, I don't remember where they
- 10:15play, but I really like Maryland's quarterback.
- 10:17And Bammy, you sent the picture of of of the same.
- 10:21Yeah, yeah. Again.
- 10:23And you mentioned apathy. Yes, exactly.
- 10:25Yes. It's it's it's hitting, it's
- 10:27hitting Wisconsin. There's going to be a job
- 10:30vacancy. We shall see where that goes or
- 10:32let's us go to the SEC. And Trent, your take away from
- 10:35the SEC this past weekend was? There were a couple of things
- 10:39that I thought that were the Memphis poor officiating an Oak
- 10:43well, Auburn. That was definitely one of them.
- 10:45We got we got the split though in the Group of Five games,
- 10:47Memphis got the win. Tulane got run out of the
- 10:49building that. Surprised me, Tulane.
- 10:51Yeah, just a a complete no show against old miss and and Vandy
- 10:56scored 70. I mean, come on, 70 and he put
- 10:59up 70 points against the Georgia State team that that sucks the
- 11:02air out of the football. I mean, they weren't playing
- 11:04another high tempo team. Look at the look at Vandye
- 11:07record to start the year. They're.
- 11:08They're four, no? Huh, Vandy?
- 11:11Vanderbilt in the SEC championship game.
- 11:13Shall we start the breaks a little bit?
- 11:15Shall we start talking about it? But a fun weekend.
- 11:18And I would just. I'm always so sad to see Sam
- 11:21Pitman. Yeah, when they lose, when they
- 11:23lose like that. I wonder.
- 11:24Apparently Petrino's politicking behind the scenes to be the
- 11:27interim coach. Is Pitman going to make it to
- 11:31October Bama? I don't think so.
- 11:34I don't know what the buyout is. It listen, it's the same thing,
- 11:37right? Everybody likes him.
- 11:39Good guy. Yep.
- 11:42They just keep finding creative ways to lose.
- 11:45And that was a absolutely brutal loss against Memphis because
- 11:49they were driving. You can call it bad luck,
- 11:52whatever you want to call it. They were, I don't know what
- 11:55they're on the 1015 yard line, whatever it was driving in for a
- 11:58chip shop field goal to win the game.
- 12:01The quarter pack is lunging forward and the defender makes a
- 12:04tremendous play, punches it out. You couldn't even tell it on,
- 12:08you know, until you really went to the ISO on the replay.
- 12:10Clear fumble and that's it. I don't know what the buyout is.
- 12:16I don't know what the, the finding.
- 12:18You would think Arkansas, I got a little money up there with
- 12:20Walmart, but I I don't, I don't know that.
- 12:23And the and the Tyson chicken guy, isn't he in Arkansas?
- 12:26Guy, yeah, he's up there too, absolutely so.
- 12:28But again, I don't, I don't know what I don't know what the
- 12:31current situation is. I think it's obvious Bob Petrino
- 12:33is going to be the next coach up there.
- 12:36I mean, you know, you mentioned him politic.
- 12:37And I don't think he's going to have to.
- 12:38First of all, it's not a shock with him because he's done that
- 12:41before. You know, I mean, remember back
- 12:43when he was at other places, he would flirt with jobs, you know,
- 12:46left and right. But yeah, I think I don't think
- 12:50he's going to survive the year. You know, South Carolina is that
- 12:54was a Missouri's good. Yeah, they are Missouri.
- 12:57Missouri might be better. And I thought, and you really
- 12:59look at it and what's really stood out to me, they had 285
- 13:02yards on the ground. South Carolina is not a bad
- 13:04defensive team. They're not elite, but they're
- 13:06not bad. 285 yards on the ground, you know, for Bullo and
- 13:11say his name, you know, through only through 471 yards.
- 13:15Sellers was OK. He.
- 13:16Took a lot of hits. He didn't take a lot of hits,
- 13:20302 yards, you know, 2 touchdowns.
- 13:22But yeah, I think 567 sacks, which, you know, would have
- 13:25been, you know, noteworthy had it not been for what Oklahoma
- 13:27did to Auburn. And Speaking of that, that that
- 13:30was look, that was one of the most poorly efficient games that
- 13:36I have seen in a while. I still don't know the the the
- 13:39stupid score that Auburn had. I don't know.
- 13:41I still don't know how they had enough to overturn that.
- 13:43I don't know how they didn't just uphold what was on there on
- 13:46the field. You mentioned the play where
- 13:48they you know you're running off and.
- 13:50It's the sleeper play in in 8th grade football.
- 13:56You might think it's a dumb rule and that they should be paying
- 13:58attention, but it's a rule and they're not and they're trained
- 14:01to not look for anymore, right? You know defenders are not
- 14:03trained for that anymore by rule because it's it's breaking rule.
- 14:06The past interference that didn't get called on time,
- 14:10right? Yes.
- 14:12And it's Cam Coleman down on the goal line jumping up in the air
- 14:15the the gate and the referee is turned running the other
- 14:20direction. That is as bad as it gets right
- 14:23there. And listen, I'm giving that guy
- 14:25a 10% pass because it was it wasn't a quarterback pass.
- 14:30It was a double pass to a wide receiver.
- 14:32So he's trying to get out of the way.
- 14:33My question is where? My question is, where's his
- 14:36help? OK, you've got six other guys
- 14:39out there. I'm how many times on API do you
- 14:41see five flags coming in, right? Yeah.
- 14:43What were the other guys looking at on that plate?
- 14:45It was it was awful. Now that said, Auburn again,
- 14:49what is it 1011 sacks, whatever it was, They give up school
- 14:52record to Oklahoma when that's a pretty stout defenses they've
- 14:55had in the past. Two, you mentioned Vanderbilt,
- 14:58I'm just going to say it real quick.
- 15:00I don't know that they're going to make it to the SEC
- 15:02championship game, but that is a scary football team.
- 15:06And I'm going to tell you somebody who ought to be scared.
- 15:09Alabama goes to Georgia this week, two weeks for three weeks
- 15:15they go to Missouri. You know what's handled
- 15:17sandwiched in between those two? What's that?
- 15:20Alabama, Vandy, Vanderbilt, Oh my God, at Georgia, Vandy at
- 15:25home at Missouri, you and then Tennessee, right.
- 15:28So you want to tell me they're overlooking Vanderbilt and
- 15:30Vanderbilt can be 9 and oh, nobody's going to care.
- 15:32They're still Vanderbilt. That is a really good.
- 15:36Football team, you know why they won't overlook in Bama last
- 15:38year? I would hope not.
- 15:41Right. But, you know, again, Ken, it's
- 15:43just so ingrained down here, you know, that it's it's.
- 15:47It's a. It's put it in the win column,
- 15:49right? Exactly.
- 15:51It's Vanderbilt. Well, this is not your, your,
- 15:54your, you know, fathers or your grandfathers or your great
- 15:57grandfathers. Vanderbilt.
- 15:58This is a really good football team.
- 16:00And they've got A1 stud at quarterback.
- 16:02Yeah, they did. So that's going to be tough.
- 16:04But yeah, you know, Florida, again, just just cutred.
- 16:09Miami's good. But Florida had one first down
- 16:12and 32 yards in the first half. So it's just the watch is on for
- 16:15Billy Napier. When's it going to happen?
- 16:17They're going to buy week this week.
- 16:19You kind of thought maybe it happened now because, you know,
- 16:22coming out of the body. Oh, look, it's Texas.
- 16:25You know, it's it's just I'm sorry, they don't have a Yeah,
- 16:27they are open this week. So yeah.
- 16:29And and again, it just gets harder down the line.
- 16:31But you know, we're going to really an Ole Miss.
- 16:33You mentioned the Tulane game. We might be sleeping on Ole Miss
- 16:36just a little bit. You know, they lost Jackson
- 16:37guard. You thought, well, it's a reset
- 16:38year for Lane Kiffin. They struggled at Kentucky and I
- 16:42couldn't get past that. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:44But boy, they stumped Tulane. That was never with the backup
- 16:48quarterback. Yeah, Well, yeah.
- 16:51Maybe we'll see. Trent, the ACC, obviously
- 16:55Clemson. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:56I mean, that's the storyline certainly of the week.
- 16:59We might be pretty soon having to change this to the AAC
- 17:02instead of the ACC. You know what, that's a
- 17:03fairpoint because I think the group of five participant is
- 17:06coming from. Do you have your notebook in
- 17:08front of you? I do.
- 17:09Who did we pick as our group of five?
- 17:11I don't add Memphis. You're in a good spot.
- 17:13I'm feeling very good about those Tigers started.
- 17:16To come on, I, I, I, I've shuddered to ask Bama.
- 17:19I don't want to be embarrassed. I think I had two.
- 17:22Lanes all right? You're still alive.
- 17:23They play each other. Yeah.
- 17:25Looking through the notebook scene where I wrote it in here
- 17:28and through this mess of notes says that we had about 6000
- 17:30things in there can and not seeing where I wrote it down,
- 17:36I'd have to look a little. Deeper good.
- 17:37We didn't go on record because I think I picked Boise.
- 17:40I'm sure. I think you had Clemson as your
- 17:42national. I did.
- 17:42Woof. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:45And I had Bill Belichick a success in North Carolina.
- 17:49We killed a lot of segments in the spring over that.
- 17:53Yeah, that's that's turning ugly quick.
- 17:55I don't know that that's going to last the second year down
- 17:58there. Why why does he need that job
- 18:00again? I keep going back up.
- 18:01Why are you there? But I mean, the did you see the
- 18:04UCF tweet? That was just next level.
- 18:06That was awesome. What did they say?
- 18:07So they had their mascot. He was doing the pose.
- 18:10Yes. Just like the yoga pose.
- 18:12Yes. Bill checked in with his
- 18:14girlfriend. Yeah, that.
- 18:15That was they also, they also have somebody put out a meme of,
- 18:20what's her name, Jordan Hudson, kind of, yeah, kind of standing
- 18:24silhouetted behind Scott Frost, like she's checking him out.
- 18:28I mean that was. Pretty good too.
- 18:31I don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but what?
- 18:33What? Potentially because Georgia Tech
- 18:35looked really good. I think so too.
- 18:37What does this game against Georgia at the end of the year
- 18:39mean? I mean, let's, let's put them in
- 18:43the let's put Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship game.
- 18:47I mean, I, I win over Georgia late in the year.
- 18:51If Georgia Tech loses a couple, might they be a playoff team?
- 18:54I guess is where I would go. Might this mean that?
- 18:56It could be, yeah. I mean, where it comes down to
- 18:59then they have to win the ACC Championship in order to get in.
- 19:01If they lose to Georgia, yeah, there's still a lot of.
- 19:04Football. No, there is, but they're off to
- 19:05a remember. Last year you had Wazoo in the
- 19:06playoff. Well, look, no.
- 19:09I wanted to make a case for it. I didn't have them in, they got
- 19:14they got Remind me they did get in though didn't.
- 19:16They they just missed, just missed.
- 19:17Just missed that's what it was. Yeah, Georgia Tech plays at
- 19:21White Forest. That's a win.
- 19:23You think yeah, they're going to buy a week.
- 19:25They got Virginia Tech. That's a win.
- 19:27Terrible. They go to Duke.
- 19:30Yeah. You know, share, win Hughes.
- 19:32Yeah, yeah, Syracuse, tough game, tougher than maybe you
- 19:35think at NC State, at Boston College, PIT, that's their ACC
- 19:41schedule, guys. No Miami, no Florida State,
- 19:46there's a path. Yeah, there is to get Georgia at
- 19:48the end of the year. So yeah, I mean, if they can
- 19:50stay healthy, again, you always worry about attrition and
- 19:52injuries with a team like Delmar Vanderbilt, right?
- 19:55Because they might not have too deep at every position.
- 19:58So they can keep they can keep the things king upright.
- 20:02They're they're going to be around for sure, I think.
- 20:05Trent is is Memphis the best Group of Five team right now?
- 20:10Who worries you? I still can't get there.
- 20:12I mean, Tulane's still going to be a fat.
- 20:13They play each other on a Friday night.
- 20:15Yeah, I don't think that there's a big gap between them and
- 20:18everybody else or anything like that, that when it gets Arkansas
- 20:20is going to go a long way and certainly help them.
- 20:23But I think there's just too many good teams in the AAC.
- 20:26A couple it with no you get weird game.
- 20:28Texas is good. This is good.
- 20:30You got Navy. I mean you got those weird games
- 20:32that are USF. They haven't fallen off the map.
- 20:34I mean, that's still a team that can definitely win.
- 20:36Great start. Yeah.
- 20:38East Carolina didn't play very well against BYU, but they got
- 20:41a. Good game coming up I think.
- 20:42They play in the week. It's either Thursday or Friday
- 20:43coming up this week. I think maybe against Army, but
- 20:46regardless too many good teams in the to say that definitive.
- 20:50So is, but is the Group of Five coming from the AAC Jakes?
- 20:53I do too, yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:55Has to be, I think. I mean, what's the other option,
- 20:57Boy, man, San Diego State? Well, the Big Cal.
- 21:01Yeah, Big. Cal, I mean, you know, Big 10,
- 21:04well, where do they ACC whoever the hell they're in now, you
- 21:07know, But nobody saw it because it was at midnight again.
- 21:11But I don't know. I mean, can San Diego State get
- 21:14there if they win the Mountain West?
- 21:15Are they going to, could they get jump over an AAC team,
- 21:19especially because, you know, Tulane and Tulane and Memphis, I
- 21:23believe, play in the regular season.
- 21:24So then they would have to meet again.
- 21:25Yeah. They play in late November, I
- 21:27mean no early November on a Friday night.
- 21:30Yeah. So if they if they if they
- 21:32played in and then they meet again and they split it, is that
- 21:35going to leave an opening for, you know, San Diego State to
- 21:38sneak in something? So I don't know.
- 21:40But yeah, I think right now if he had to, if you're if you're
- 21:42given odds, I'm taking them for the that it comes out of the AC
- 21:45for the Group 5. Hey, boys, Notre Dame won a
- 21:48football game, and Peacock took a long time to get through it.
- 21:51Yeah, boy, they. Yeah.
- 21:53Bama, I know you're off on Friday.
- 21:56We'll talk a week from today, have fun with the family.
- 21:59I know it's not the best occasions that you're going for,
- 22:01but we will. We'll talk to you in a weeks
- 22:04time. All right, brother.
- 22:05I appreciate it, guys. Take care.
- 22:06I'll, I'll miss you, but I'll. We'll be watching.
- 22:08We'll talk. We'll talk Monday.
- 22:10You got to see you, pal. Good to talk to you.
- 22:11Bama, Bob, Trent and I recapping the week in college football.
- 22:15All right, we'll take your time out.
- 22:17We'll come back. Bill Seals covers Iowa State
- 22:19cyclonereport.com Mr. Monday night still to come as well.
- 22:23Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 22:24Glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:27I'm Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 22:30Trenton Ken with you until 2. Mr. Monday night still to come.
- 22:34He will follow. Our next guest is Bill Seals
- 22:37covers Iowa State cyclonereport.com part of on
- 22:40three media. Bill Trenton Ken thanks for
- 22:42coming on back to work for you and the Iowa State media here
- 22:46this week. I guess I want to start with
- 22:48review with Kyle Conradi, who apparently his girlfriend, I'm
- 22:52not on Instagram, but I have this for a couple of people say
- 22:55it's legit. She apparently posted that
- 22:58Conradi's going to miss, I think that she said four to six weeks
- 23:02with an injury. Do you buy that?
- 23:04Is this the first time is, I mean, does she do this all the
- 23:08time? And if so, how is Matt Campbell
- 23:10not pulled Conradi in and said, you know, tap the brakes on this
- 23:13a little bit? Well, yeah, that's a that's a
- 23:16good question. That it, it sounds like it's
- 23:19been corroborated though, by his dad that he was going to be out
- 23:23for a while. So probably not what the
- 23:27coaching staff wanted to see out on social media over a a bye
- 23:32week. But I, I think kind of what we
- 23:34saw against Arkansas State, it LED everyone to believe he was
- 23:38he was going to miss some time. And even with the bye week and
- 23:41I, I think it, it's wise to just get him some rest really.
- 23:46It's a long season. They've got 3 by weeks, just had
- 23:49their first. So I think still, if they think
- 23:53time will be a a big factor here, I think get him off his
- 23:57feet and and see if they can get him back for the what would be
- 24:01probably what, the last third or fourth of the regular season.
- 24:05And Gilbert's hurt as well, correct?
- 24:07Yeah, yeah. We haven't seen him.
- 24:09He had that first kick off against South Dakota, the home
- 24:14opener, and you know, he spent the second-half of that game in
- 24:17street clothes and we haven't seen the guy since.
- 24:20So I I would imagine we'll get some clarification on both of
- 24:24those kickers from Campbell tomorrow.
- 24:26And then of course, we're back in the Big 12 action.
- 24:29So starting on Wednesday night around 9:00, we'll start getting
- 24:32the player availability reports on that too.
- 24:37Chase Smith looks to be the guy. Didn't appear to have maybe the
- 24:42longest leg. He's still a young guy out
- 24:44there, but we'll hear, I'm sure, more about Jay Smith kind of
- 24:48going forward. What can you tell us about him,
- 24:50what we know? Because I mean, it would make
- 24:52sense with another bye week coming up here in three weeks
- 24:55for Conradie, off this week, obviously with the bye, three
- 24:59weeks of games and then another bye maybe after that.
- 25:01What can you tell us, though, about Jay Smith?
- 25:04Well, he was, he was one of those kind of interesting.
- 25:07I'll I'll always remember talking to this kid because he
- 25:10committed while we were all down in Orlando for the Pop Tarts
- 25:16Bowl week. So this commitment comes through
- 25:19in late December. Obviously it's not a time that's
- 25:23a heavy football recruiting time for that the class, but he was
- 25:28good kind of like a kid that did everything for that North Scott
- 25:32team. If you'll remember, North Scott
- 25:34was the home of the Peterson brothers that that came through
- 25:39Iowa State. So I would imagine a good
- 25:42connection there between the North Scott coaching staff and
- 25:45the Iowa State coaches. So they they steered him onto
- 25:49him. He was a late walk on addition
- 25:51in that 2025 class. The quarterback for his team as
- 25:56well. So true for almost 2400 yards
- 25:59and and 28 touchdowns last year. So also a pretty good QB in his
- 26:04own right at that level of football in in Iowa.
- 26:07So we're we're going to find out a lot more about him, though.
- 26:10And and as you mentioned, you know, maybe the leg strength on
- 26:13kickoffs not quite there just yet, but the the coverage teams
- 26:18are going to be need to be on their game as they as the
- 26:21Cyclones move forward here and cover what looks to be, you
- 26:25know, kicks probably to the 1520 yard line.
- 26:28And they're going to need to come through and, you know,
- 26:30haven't been tested a whole lot. They with guys like Gilbert
- 26:34doing kickoffs and a lot of them have gone for touchbacks.
- 26:37So that's about to change probably.
- 26:39Yeah, what? One more in the kick and we'll
- 26:41get to other physicians on the field.
- 26:42But, I mean, and I don't, yeah, I know the answer to this and
- 26:45probably feel dumb even asking Campbell wouldn't be
- 26:49forthcoming. I mean, if you were to ask him
- 26:51tomorrow, you know, from what you've seen of Chase Smith, what
- 26:53do you feel comfortable sending him out on the field to kick a
- 26:5640 to 49? I mean, what do you think his
- 26:59distance is? Do you have any idea, Bill?
- 27:01And would Campbell even, you know, offer an answer on that if
- 27:04he was asked? You know, probably not just
- 27:08because it probably ends up on Brent Brennan's desk, the
- 27:13Arizona head coach and others moving forward.
- 27:16Probably something we're just going to have to find out.
- 27:19And the media is not allowed into any practices before or
- 27:23during spring ball or before in in like training camps.
- 27:26So we really haven't seen Chase Smith kick.
- 27:29Has he? Did he kick it north, Scott?
- 27:33He did, yeah. Yeah, he did.
- 27:35He did kick for North Scott as far as like the high school, but
- 27:38that's on that, you know, that's fine.
- 27:40I think that's still off of a. Tee.
- 27:42Trent yeah, in high school he was, he was 4 of so with a long
- 27:48of 42 yards and in high school, so you never know, the only four
- 27:53O 6 with a long of 42, maybe they did.
- 27:55There were some opportunities to go for longer ones and the the
- 27:59coach just didn't feel comfortable doing it.
- 28:02We jump over there and you've been doing a lot of work during
- 28:04the bye week. Really enjoyed the rundown of
- 28:07all the grades for all the players to this point in the
- 28:09season from Pro Football Focus. Give us a guy on each side of
- 28:12the football. Maybe this surprise you either
- 28:14good or bad on each side because it was a good rundown of
- 28:17everybody and I thought there were a couple of eye openers
- 28:19myself. As you were unearthing the
- 28:21numbers, what came out to you? Well, I was really impressed
- 28:26with the the offensive line and graded out a little better than
- 28:30I than I thought maybe just because at times this has been a
- 28:33team that struggled to run the ball.
- 28:35They've done it well in in spurts.
- 28:37But you know, Jim Boniface, what was that guy?
- 28:40She's well and I should say James Neal too.
- 28:43I'm not going to slight James Neal.
- 28:44He's been the highest graded of all 5 offensive lineman and, and
- 28:49was a guy they got out of the JUCO ranks earlier in his career
- 28:53had played basketball. So he's only really in like his
- 28:56what 4th year maybe a playing actual football.
- 29:00So he's been a revelation though for this offensive line so far,
- 29:05a 72.6 run blocking the machine so far he's been over a 70 there
- 29:13and, and just doing a great job across the board.
- 29:15And then, you know, Jim Boniface, everybody wondered
- 29:18while Trevor Bohr was out if if maybe they would shuffle things
- 29:22around and like a Dylan Barrett or a Brendan Black might end up
- 29:26at center. But I think Jim Boniface is
- 29:30taking hold of this job and it's going to be his here in his
- 29:33senior year. And seems like maybe Dylan
- 29:36Barrett might be the odd man out here as as they get into a game
- 29:40week again, I would imagine Trevor Borg going to make the
- 29:42start on Saturday. And we've seen Brendan Black's
- 29:46performance up up several ticks here this season as well.
- 29:50So I think that that sums up kind of my thoughts on the
- 29:53offensive side, maybe some surprises to me.
- 29:57And then, you know, you flip over to defense a couple things.
- 30:02I think Dominique Orange at a 68.6 probably could be a little
- 30:06bit higher. I've always, I've always thought
- 30:09that a little bit with him too. Maybe in that 335 he gets
- 30:12underrated quite a bit And, and what his responsibilities are.
- 30:16He's got two guys on the ends that are that are new.
- 30:20So I, I, he's with, with McDonough and with Eziago.
- 30:25I mean, they're throwing two or three guys blockers at, at
- 30:29orange on every place. So I think he's build his own
- 30:31and then gosh, Marcus Neal, let's praise the work he's done
- 30:36an 86.1. He is just been an absolute
- 30:40stand out this year as a sophomore and played the most
- 30:43snaps of anybody on that side of the ball this season.
- 30:47Fascinating to see how this works out and the good numbers
- 30:51on both sides. And I would not have known that.
- 30:54So let's let's look at at this Arizona team.
- 30:57This was the team that, you know, didn't get a lot of
- 31:00attention maybe prior to the season when the schedule comes
- 31:03on and it's Arizona coming off a bad year.
- 31:06But they've played pretty well. Bill, this, this should mean
- 31:09United States got more talent, I think.
- 31:11But this game may be a little bit deeper waters than we
- 31:14originally thought. Yeah, Well, I I think we we've
- 31:18even talked about Fafida, I think in the past, Kenny and and
- 31:22I think he's really done a good job here so far this season.
- 31:26And I put up that over the noon hour, a kind of a deeper dive
- 31:30into the PFF grades for both of these teams through the early
- 31:35stretch of the season. Obviously Arizona had the bye
- 31:37week last week as well coming out of that K State win.
- 31:41But Fafida is remarkable. You you could like what their
- 31:47grades are on the offensive side.
- 31:50Arizona not doing a real good job in in pass blocking here so
- 31:55far 94th in the country. So I but yet they're passing
- 32:00grade with the feet at 23rd nationally.
- 32:03So I think he's really come into his own 712 yards passing
- 32:08through three games. You know, I I thought he was
- 32:10solid against Kansas State. They got that nice win going
- 32:14into the bye week and then with with Fafida as well.
- 32:18He's one that you you factor with the the legs as well.
- 32:22He's got 3 rushing touchdowns and obviously, you know the sack
- 32:26number that the sacks negatively impact like his rushing impact.
- 32:31So he's down to 37 on the season there.
- 32:34But the three rushing touchdowns, I think he's a guy
- 32:37that Iowa State going to need to be on on its keys defensively
- 32:41and and not let him go pick up those 6-7 yard gains on 3rd down
- 32:45and and move the change Arkansas State 7 to 16 on 3rd down.
- 32:49And then we obviously saw what how much of an impact Rainer had
- 32:53on that game for them. What about the other side of the
- 32:56ball? Arizona, of course.
- 32:57Rafito always the top of the conversation there, but this
- 33:00Arizona defense also looks much improved.
- 33:03Right. Yeah, Genesis Smith, the highest
- 33:06graded out of any of the defensive players for them
- 33:11defensive back, so out of Chandler, AZ, hometown guy.
- 33:15So yeah, he's really stood out so far, I think, and I think
- 33:21they're the kind of similar to Iowa State.
- 33:24They've got three of their top five graded guys on defense are
- 33:29DBS. You look at Iowa State, it's a
- 33:31similar story. The coverage grade for the
- 33:35Wildcats really good. So, you know, this is 1.
- 33:38I think the Cyclone's really going to be tested with that
- 33:41Arizona defense and and then the the back end where that's been
- 33:45their strength. And, you know, obviously with
- 33:47Iowa State, Rocco Beck coming in that passing game, it's it's
- 33:51going to be tested this weekend, no doubt.
- 33:53No doubt. I wonder if there's any Cyclone
- 33:57fans out there that wish Eli Sanders was still an an option
- 34:00at the running back position. Putting up big numbers at USC
- 34:04but can't keep everybody I guess.
- 34:06Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com Bill, great stuff.
- 34:09Press conference tomorrow. Campbell speaks at what time?
- 34:13It'll be a little afternoon, usually the whole thing.
- 34:17The whole thing starts around 11:30 with players, then we'll
- 34:20get Mauser after the players 11:50-ish and then Campbell will
- 34:26follow shortly thereafter. Good stuff.
- 34:29We'll see you on Twitter. Thank you, Bill Seals,
- 34:31appreciate you doing this. As always, cyclonereport.com,
- 34:35part of On Three Media. Thanks, Bill.
- 34:36Have a great week. You as well.
- 34:38Thanks guys. Thanks, good to talk to you Bill
- 34:40Seals again, it's a whiteout. If you're headed to Jack Trice
- 34:43on Saturday night for the six O clock kick, it is a whiteout.
- 34:47ESPN has that. But down the hall on the 100.3
- 34:52the bust, the flagship of the Iowa State radio network.
- 34:56All right, we'll take the time out.
- 34:57Come back Mr. Monday night got a good one tonight.
- 35:00Double header next week and they're not spread out.
- 35:04They're going back to that Bing bang right off the right, almost
- 35:07right on top of each other. 15 and 7. 15, right?
- 35:10The late game is Cincinnati, Denver.
- 35:11Do you remember who the early game is?
- 35:13I don't. Remember Jets, Dolphins PU Yes,
- 35:16you're be itching to get over to here, Bronco God.
- 35:19I hope Buck and Aikman are in Denver.
- 35:21What do you think? New York team.
- 35:24Why do we keep betting fed New York teams?
- 35:26New York teams suck. You want to watch the Giants in
- 35:29prime time? No, I haven't wanted to watch
- 35:31the Giants in prime time. Why not watch The Jets in prime?
- 35:33Time Bill Parcells. Is there even the good teams?
- 35:35Yeah, they're just something about that team.
- 35:37Yeah, Eli Manning. No Yuck.
- 35:40And I like Tom Coughlin, but. This this his.
- 35:44His players didn't. No, I wonder how the players
- 35:48like Russell Wilson, what a washed quarterback.
- 35:52You know, I'm glad that the rest of the country see what how bad
- 35:55this guy is. He's awful.
- 35:56He just threw for 450 yards two weeks against the freaking
- 35:59Cowboys. He can't be that.
- 36:03Washed. He's washed.
- 36:05He's that good. No.
- 36:06And he has. A lot of that for.
- 36:07Four years and he's probably #32.
- 36:10I think everybody knows that though.
- 36:12He's terrible. I mean, why do you want to?
- 36:14I get why in this market you want to watch The Jets, right?
- 36:17Like watching Breece Hall. Will McDonald, by the way, he's.
- 36:20My God it's clicking isn't. It Mr. Monday night's been
- 36:23clicking he's next Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio
- 36:26Network. Hi Miller and Condon, welcome
- 36:28back Iowa Sports Radio Network. It's Des Moines sports station
- 36:32One O 6.3 KX&O top of the hour off the bench, Sean Robertson,
- 36:37Lucas train take you until 5 O clock overtime Iowa 5 to 6.
- 36:41Of course tomorrow morning at six O clock the first quarter,
- 36:44Heather and Alec get going at 6:00 AM.
- 36:48Well, the week 3 concludes. Are you still alive in Survivor?
- 36:52By the way, who did you have? The Bills, that was a free
- 36:56square well. You made a sweat for it.
- 36:58It was. A little bit, yeah.
- 36:59It was a little that Seattle was a free square yesterday.
- 37:02It turned out to be. Yeah, it turned out to be.
- 37:05It was 45 three. Wasn't.
- 37:06Well, yeah, I mean it's easy to say in hindsight.
- 37:09You thought last year that there were a lot of free squares and
- 37:11there weren't. They're never free squares, are
- 37:13we? It's.
- 37:13Dangerously close to seeing October for the first time.
- 37:17Well, you just jinxed it, so no. I feel pretty good.
- 37:21You're 1. I did that was the only.
- 37:23Year. That was the only year, yeah.
- 37:25You never have, though. Never have.
- 37:27If The Jets would have held on. If, if, if what was that number,
- 37:32like 3400? More people would have been
- 37:34knocked out. God, I was pulling for that to
- 37:36happen. I do not have the bills this
- 37:38week against the aforementioned Saints.
- 37:40You're not going. To use them, I just used them.
- 37:42Oh, you. Can't.
- 37:42Yeah, you can't use them. Can't go back to the well again.
- 37:45We have one Bills. I think.
- 37:47Well, I don't want to speak for the rest of my group.
- 37:49Who else do you like? Is looks as like a Survivor
- 37:53candidate. Maybe the Packers?
- 37:55Where do they go? Dallas with maybe no CD Lamb.
- 37:59Yeah, who do they, who do the Giants play?
- 38:02The. Giants host of Chargers.
- 38:04They are a home for the Chargers.
- 38:06By the way. Cross country early body clock.
- 38:09Nick Bosa out for the year, Torres ACL for the Niners, saw
- 38:13that. And then the other one that I'm
- 38:14looking at maybe is Monday night.
- 38:17Monday night going with the Broncos.
- 38:20They're not losing three in a row.
- 38:22I use them a weak one against the Titans.
- 38:23You can't use them. Who are you?
- 38:25Who's Mr. Monday Night using tonight?
- 38:27Lions. He's all about the Lions in the
- 38:29four and a half reverse line movement in this one.
- 38:32Better public all over the Ravens, yet that point spread
- 38:35trickling down. In fact, down to four at circa 4
- 38:381/2 at DraftKings. I'm going to grab the points
- 38:40here and give me the Lion. I hope we get a good game.
- 38:43I believe we will. We'll talk about it tomorrow.
- 38:45We appreciate you being with us. Trent and I talk sports with you
- 38:48every Monday through Friday from noon until 2.
- 38:51Thanks for being with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network and
