- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am the beard of Comics, Tyler, and across the interwebs.
- 0:18Tyler Johnson: from me are Tad and Phil. Did you hear the thwips?
- 0:22Tad Eggleston: We did. Oh, yeah. Those were good thwips.
- 0:25Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay, good twit.
- 0:27Tyler Johnson: Great. Yes!
- 0:28Tad Eggleston: Those, like, came out of the screen and into my face.
- 0:32Tyler Johnson: It's two… two problems. One, these are new earbuds, and two, my beard is bigger than ever, and… Enough to…
- 0:41Phil: Take a… your nickname.
- 0:43Tad Eggleston: And three, Zoom has pretty, pretty…
- 0:45Tyler Johnson: Not just a clever nickname.
- 0:47Tad Eggleston: good noise canceling.
- 0:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 0:50Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah.
- 0:54Tyler Johnson: How's it going?
- 0:55Tad Eggleston: How's it going? It's been a busy week, man.
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: I told you guys a little bit off the air, but I'm gonna tell you again on the air, because it's all comics-related since Wednesday. Friend of the podcast will be returning guest soon to talk about this. Jim Terry spent the last week making a movie, or not the last week, last year making a movie.
- 1:19Tad Eggleston: That screened in a theater in Chicago on Wednesday night, and I went down.
- 1:23Tad Eggleston: It's called Shank.
- 1:27Tad Eggleston: And the way I've been describing it.
- 1:32Tad Eggleston: to, like, everybody, because, like, it's amazing, and I want it to get wider distribution, and or digital DVD… it feels like it should be a VHS, honestly.
- 1:44Tad Eggleston: Which people who've listened to the last few interviews have heard me say a few times, but, you know, oh well, I, I don't have a lot of material. But for you guys, it's like, imagine Jim Jarmouche and Kevin Smith got together and made an action movie.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: But spent no money at all.
- 2:08Tad Eggleston: With really good sound design and soundtrack.
- 2:13Tyler Johnson: That's awesome.
- 2:14Tad Eggleston: It's… it's… it's amazing. It's amazing.
- 2:17Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I can't wait to see it.
- 2:19Tad Eggleston: Total labor of love. Again, I hope that a lot more people get to see it. I will continue championing it every opportunity I get.
- 2:29Phil: Listen.
- 2:30Tad Eggleston: I said.
- 2:31Phil: playing anywhere other, you know, than a theater in Chicago.
- 2:34Tad Eggleston: Well, again, it was just one time. Right, yeah.
- 2:37Tyler Johnson: Oh, and just…
- 2:39Tad Eggleston: Playing. Played!
- 2:45Phil: It's like you, you schedule some kind of a release event, it's just your house.
- 2:51Tad Eggleston: A little bit.
- 2:53Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: I mean, no budget, dude! But yeah, so I had that, and then Tyler knows how this happens, you know, sometimes I'll go from having a bunch of balls in the air, where I've, like.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: given dates for, like, the next month or so, whatnot, and then they all say yes for the same week, same day, same time, and sometimes that time is, like, the next available time. So…
- 3:19Tad Eggleston: on Monday, the last thing I was doing for the week was the Jim Terry movie, and then I wound up talking to David Walker, Joe Illage, and Stefan Frank, all on…
- 3:33Tad Eggleston: Between Thursday and Friday. Yeah.
- 3:37Phil: I think I saw a few more emails come in than that, so it was like…
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: But other stuff got booked, but, but, yeah. But yeah, no, 6 hours of interviews.
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: Between… two days.
- 3:51Tyler Johnson: Why do you do this to yourself?
- 3:54Phil: What just happened?
- 3:55Tad Eggleston: It just… it fell into place, and, like, there were good reasons to get them all done in a timely manner.
- 4:03Tyler Johnson: I suppose, yeah.
- 4:04Tad Eggleston: Because one of them has an active Kickstarter, one of them has a Kickstarter about to launch, and the other one is in our FOC today.
- 4:21Tyler Johnson: Whaaat?
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: So, you know…
- 4:25Tad Eggleston: A couple of them I'd been talking to for longer than that, but it fell together like this.
- 4:31Tad Eggleston: It just happens sometimes. And, like, my spring break started yesterday, so it's like, I had to power through a little bit of it, because, man, like, coming home late on Wednesday night, and then…
- 4:43Phil: Woof.
- 4:46Tad Eggleston: But, particularly because, as you guys know, I'd been sick at the beginning of the week.
- 4:51Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 4:52Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 4:54Tad Eggleston: So yeah, it was fun, though.
- 4:58Tad Eggleston: And somewhere in the middle of that is when news dropped that, powers.
- 5:05Tad Eggleston: is getting the adult animation treatment at Netflix.
- 5:10Tad Eggleston: Which is also very exciting, with… with both Bendis and Oming.
- 5:16Tad Eggleston: Lined up to be a part of it, which makes it even more exciting.
- 5:21Phil: I love the implication that, because Netflix was unsuccessful in their attempt to buy the DC Universe, they had to, go with their backup plan to buy the Powers universe.
- 5:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, honestly, if I have to choose between the two, I'd take the Powers universe.
- 5:38Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 5:38Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 5:39Tad Eggleston: I don't think they own the power
- 5:41Tad Eggleston: I think they just get to…
- 5:43Tyler Johnson: Right.
- 5:44Tad Eggleston: to make the TV show. But yeah, I'm excited about this.
- 5:50Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 5:51Tad Eggleston: Less exciting news that you guys have read more about, you guys were the ones that tipped me to this, so who wants… who wants to take the next point here?
- 6:01Tyler Johnson: Cool, buddy.
- 6:01Phil: I just, I just, yeah. I just heard, unfortunately, while scrolling the internet, that, Sam Keith, creator of The Max and co-creator of Sandman, has passed away, unfortunately, at the age of 63, I believe?
- 6:16Tad Eggleston: So not old, but not young, young, so there's a… Yeah.
- 6:22Phil: Absolutely a legend of a creator in the comic scene. A lot of people sharing nothing but nice stories about him, and strangeness, apparently he was a… he was an off-the-wall dude, which is what you'd expect from, you know, someone who created the Macs, for sure.
- 6:38Phil: But I'd rather…
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: It's relatively new, so we may have more on it next week as there's some…
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: More collected remembrance pieces, etc.
- 6:49Phil: Yeah, so it's just today that I heard.
- 6:52Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been? Oh, God.
- 6:55Tyler Johnson: Very cruisy week.
- 6:57Tad Eggleston: War continues, and it's officially hit the comics world. A ship carrying…
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: a couple of Fanographics books, among other things, was hit by Iranian missiles, and iron Circus sent out notices on a couple of their
- 7:15Tad Eggleston: Kickstarters that… Because of the… the close… closure of the state of… Strait of Hormuz, their, their release
- 7:26Tad Eggleston: Their shipping dates are gonna wind up being pushed back.
- 7:30Tad Eggleston: On books that are otherwise done, they're just, you know.
- 7:34Tad Eggleston: Not stateside yet, so, so, so, yeah… That's the world.
- 7:41Tyler Johnson: Don't…
- 7:42Tad Eggleston: And also.
- 7:44Tyler Johnson: It's all good.
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: Tyler, you were telling me something about Banksy?
- 7:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah, so it was reported this week that, Banksy… there's a man that's been accused of being Banksy.
- 7:56Phil: What's that?
- 7:57Tad Eggleston: Banksy… Banks… I mean, is it real? Cause, like…
- 8:01Tyler Johnson: A couple…
- 8:03Tad Eggleston: It's not the first time that there's been…
- 8:06Tyler Johnson: This…
- 8:07Tad Eggleston: Everybody thinks they know Banksy. Who's reporting this?
- 8:11Tyler Johnson: Well, I've…
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: out of it.
- 8:13Tyler Johnson: I initially saw it on Good Morning America, and then I went and looked at it on another site, so you're rolling your… I went and looked…
- 8:22Phil: At other sites, Good Morning America wasn't trustworthy enough for you?
- 8:26Tad Eggleston: I mean, is it Good… I forget, is Good Morning America ABC or CBS?
- 8:33Tyler Johnson: I think it's ABC.
- 8:34Tad Eggleston: Okay, then it's still trustworthy.
- 8:37Tyler Johnson: Okay, but my… the point is, the… this gentleman has been, suspected of being Banksy in the past, so it really wasn't surprising when his name got brought up again, but…
- 8:52Phil: So who is he?
- 8:58Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry.
- 8:58Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry.
- 9:00Tad Eggleston: Phil, were you asking a question?
- 9:02Phil: Something… something… who is this guy?
- 9:08Tyler Johnson: Whoa.
- 9:08Tad Eggleston: I don't know, I haven't read anything.
- 9:10Tyler Johnson: Read my paper here.
- 9:11Phil: Is, is our reason we're talking about this, did Banksy make a comic or something?
- 9:17Tad Eggleston: Banksy hasn't made a comic.
- 9:19Tyler Johnson: That'd be sweet.
- 9:19Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Broke down mystery. We get funniest looks fun. Everyone we meet.
- 9:31Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Monkey!
- 9:34Tyler Johnson: Which is…
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: You guys are nuts. I don't know why you're doing all of this… Crazy, crazy.
- 9:41Phil: Yeah, we're the ones to suddenly add some production value to the show.
- 9:45Tad Eggleston: I think, you know, initial orders are due on Thursday of this week for our new-to-order stuff, so this is our last round of highlights.
- 9:59Tad Eggleston: We should… we should, we should move to that. Sure. Is this first, this first one's Tyler's, isn't it?
- 10:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and so this, this one is Babylon… Babylon Cove number one, from Rafer Roberts and art by Joe Eisma. This is a story about Heather, a no-nonsense career gal who returns to her picturesque New England
- 10:21Tyler Johnson: Hometown, for the first time in a decade, to attend a family funeral.
- 10:26Tyler Johnson: Dennis, the all-American dreamboat who broke Heather's heart in high school.
- 10:31Tyler Johnson: Charlie, the late blooming shy boy who Heather never gave the time of day, and Karthon, the ancient demon with plans to feast on the flesh of everyone in town. If you've ever wondered what would happen if Stephen King were allowed to write one of those Hallmark holiday movies, welcome to Babylon Cove.
- 10:52Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff is April 27th, and will be in shops on May 20th.
- 11:01Phil: Alright, next step is…
- 11:02Tad Eggleston: Phillip.
- 11:02Phil: Emperia by David K. Wilson and Jacques Salmon, in the Kingdom of Imperia. Modern times have come. Now anyone can have the power of a wizard by using magic crystals. They can power a magic mirror to talk with a friend across the kingdom, tune in to your favorite show, or power a magic broom.
- 11:21Phil: Princess May didn't spend her entire life studying magic just to be a shill for her father's crystal business. He gets rich off of people while doing nothing to make their lives better. She made the sacrifice to have real power so she can protect her people, not exploit them. In Dragon City, Randy, a punk rock unicorn, is just trying to take the subway home.
- 11:38Phil: There it is, that look. He hates that look. These old-timer unicorns were born before the Reformation. They must have held their horns taken by the dragons when they were young, by the look of it. This is… this is like…
- 11:49Phil: blowing into the whole story. So this sounds like a fantasy series from… from these creators, and that's coming from Rocket Ship Press. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of this coming week, March 30th, gonna be in stores May 6th.
- 12:03Tad Eggleston: Alright, Godzilla vs.
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: Texas.
- 12:10Tad Eggleston: because apparently they couldn't do just Houston or Austin or Dallas.
- 12:15Tyler Johnson: Nope, Godzilla destroyed.
- 12:16Tad Eggleston: Everything is bigger in Texas. Godzilla couldn't settle for one city in the Lone Star State, so it's going to trample over all of them.
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: Hopefully those cowboys have a saddle big enough for the king of the monsters, or else things are about to get ugly.
- 12:36Tad Eggleston: Join Godzilla and a cast of comic book creators from the great state with a whirlwind tour of Texas, featuring four 10-page stories by comic book legends like Matt Frank.
- 12:48Phil: and more.
- 12:48Tad Eggleston: more.
- 12:49Tyler Johnson: and more. Next up, you guys, is Lenore Ghost Story from Roman Dirge. This is out on Titan, but there is no description.
- 13:01Tad Eggleston: Yes, it says TBA.
- 13:03Tyler Johnson: So, I asked…
- 13:04Phil: You have to come up with a description, you have to tell us about Lenore.
- 13:07Tyler Johnson: I am!
- 13:08Tad Eggleston: I don't know, it's a ghost story, so maybe…
- 13:11Tad Eggleston: point.
- 13:12Tyler Johnson: I asked Google AI to tell me…
- 13:16Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, no, no, we can't take…
- 13:17Tyler Johnson: I don't.
- 13:18Tad Eggleston: No AI, no AI is…
- 13:19Phil: Tyler, I thought you read Lenoir.
- 13:22Tyler Johnson: I never read this.
- 13:23Tad Eggleston: Ghost.
- 13:24Tyler Johnson: So let's see, let's just see what AI says.
- 13:28Phil: Why?
- 13:29Tyler Johnson: Why?
- 13:31Tad Eggleston: Why?
- 13:31Tyler Johnson: Okay, the issue centers on Lenore and her usual crew, Pootie, Ragamuffin, and Taxidermy, attempting…
- 13:39Tad Eggleston: Actually, crew members? Did AI get that part right?
- 13:42Phil: We're, we're spec… you know.
- 13:43Tyler Johnson: Okay, they are real. Attempting a relaxing camping trip. Naturally, things go.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: That jibes with the cover here. She is toasting marshmallows.
- 13:54Phil: Inhallah.
- 13:55Tyler Johnson: Things go south as they take turns telling ghost stories under the stars, which leads to rehashed painful memories and an unwanted appearance by the ghost of Mr. Gosh.
- 14:09Tyler Johnson: So yeah, there… those are all kinds…
- 14:11Tad Eggleston: Is that the ghost of Mr. Gosh on the…
- 14:14Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that is Mr. Gosh, yep.
- 14:16Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 14:17Tyler Johnson: So, I…
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: I can see how they got everything from the cover, except for South.
- 14:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 14:24Tad Eggleston: How do they know that they went south? They could have gone east by northeast.
- 14:28Tyler Johnson: But we don't see the other characters that they mentioned, though, so Pootie, Regamuffin, and Taxidermy are not on the cover.
- 14:35Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 14:36Tyler Johnson: Oh, that's true. Just Lenore.
- 14:38Tad Eggleston: But it's fair to assume that if she was gonna go camping, that's who she'd go camping with, isn't it?
- 14:44Tyler Johnson: May, possibly, yeah.
- 14:46Tad Eggleston: I mean, I spoke…
- 14:46Tyler Johnson: She doesn't…
- 14:47Tad Eggleston: That'd be hilarious.
- 14:48Tad Eggleston: It turns out that this is the issue where she makes new friends.
- 14:53Tyler Johnson: So anyway, that's what Google thinks about Lenore's upcoming issue.
- 15:00Tad Eggleston: Alright, I am not reading from Google AI.
- 15:04Tyler Johnson: Oh, boy.
- 15:05Tad Eggleston: Megalith, the Olympus Saga, number 1.
- 15:11Tad Eggleston: An explosive cosmic odyssey of unparalleled scope and artistry. 20 minutes ago, a massive monolith crashed into the heart of Baltimore, obliterating 16 square blocks.
- 15:25Tad Eggleston: No one knows where it came from or why. Somehow, the monstrous deep space object evaded the global surveillance net.
- 15:33Tad Eggleston: Three elite breach teams were dispatched to penetrate the outer shell and disable it. Ten minutes ago, it sprouted tendrils and began ripping apart nearby streets, cars, and even people using the raw material to print itself larger.
- 15:50Tad Eggleston: Police, SWAT, the feds, even NORAD were powerless to stop it. Just 2 minutes ago, the megalith anomaly achieved its final form. A gigantic, 100-story tall, humanoid mecha-robot then began marching towards Washington, D.C.
- 16:07Tad Eggleston: Now our only hope is Officer Jack Casey, a beat cop scarred by the past, who along with what remains of the breach teams, must scale the robot from the inside. If they can reach the head, they can destroy it, but time is running out.
- 16:25Tad Eggleston: The government has scrambled a nuclear response, and the world has just learned that a second
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: bigger monolith is about to impact Earth. This is from Matt Kent and Louis LaRosa at Bad Idea.
- 16:42Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is April 13th.
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: And in stores on May 13th.
- 16:52Phil: Alright, next up, another book from Bad Idea, we've got Warbird No. 0 from Derek Kolstead, Robert Venditti, and Jesse Longergan, and covers by Frank Quitely.
- 17:02Phil: From the minds of blockbuster screenwriters, blah blah blah, comes a white-knuckle quote.
- 17:08Phil: Cool.
- 17:08Phil: rope-spanning action spy thrill ride. Cole is a repo man of the highest caliber, repossessing heavily guarded mega yachts from billionaires, private planes from captains of industry, and everything in between.
- 17:21Phil: If it's got an engine, he can drive it, ride it, or fly it straight out from under the nose of an army of guards. But now he's handed the job of a lifetime, the impossible job, one that will bring him face-to-face with the highest stakes. The Russians have stolen aeronautical military secrets from China, France, Germany, the UK, and the US to Frankenstein together the ultimate bleeding-edge, next-gen fighter jet.
- 17:44Phil: the Warbird. They're only…
- 17:47Phil: There are only 3 of them in existence. They are a force of absolute nature, 1.4 billion apiece, dominating every global hotspot from Syria to Ukraine, and Cole's been hired to steal one, and destroy the other two. His fee? 10%. Cool $140 million.
- 18:03Phil: But this isn't a repossession job, this is outright theft. And failure doesn't mean jail time and fines, it means a bullet in the back of the head. That's gonna be a final word cutoff of this coming week, March 30th, in stores, April 29th, once again, from Bad Idea.
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: Alright, The End… oh, we should get into some graphic novels now, beginning with The End of the Arab of the Future, A Youth in the Middle East. Riyadh is a teenager growing up in the French region of Brittany.
- 18:40Tad Eggleston: Where he lives with his mother and brother and attends high school in the Wrens.
- 18:46Tad Eggleston: But his adolescence is anything but typical. Born to a Syrian father and a French mother, Riyadh spent much of his early childhood in Libya.
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: rural Syria, and France, moving through contrasting worlds, political ideologies, and daily absurdities. Years earlier, his father, charismatic, authoritarian, obsessed with dictators and with building a utopian Arab society.
- 19:08Tad Eggleston: abducted Riyadh's second younger brother, Fadhi, and returned to Syria, leaving behind a fractured family.
- 19:16Tad Eggleston: At 14, Riyadh navigates puberty, isolation, and the pressures of French society, while haunted by the absence of his father and brother, and the sadness of his mother.
- 19:27Tad Eggleston: He turns to books, heavy metal, and drawing as refuge. The tone is darkly comic and sharply observant, capturing both the universal pains of adolescent and the surreal contradictions of the 1990s. Blending personal story and social commentary, this standalone volume offers a
- 19:46Tad Eggleston: Biting, poignant portrait.
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: of a young man coming of age in a world that feels both familiar and foreign. The End of the Arab of the Future is the first book in a two-volume series that concludes the critically acclaimed autobiographical
- 20:02Tad Eggleston: graphic novel begun in Arab of the Future. This is by Riyad Sattoof Sam Taylor, with art by Riyad Sattoof.
- 20:12Tad Eggleston: And it covers the years 1992 to 1994. For Vanna Graphics, final order cutoff is April 13th, in stores on May 20th. Though I'm not certain this might be one of the ones that I read had been
- 20:29Tad Eggleston: On the ship, and therefore delayed.
- 20:35Tad Eggleston: I think we're gonna start finding that a lot of things aren't coming out quite when we want them to, just because of various supply chain issues.
- 20:43Tad Eggleston: Anyway, he's got this one.
- 20:45Phil: Next up is a little book called Gun Punch by Fernando Pinto. Evan had an alright life, a job he didn't mind, and a long-distance girlfriend he was pretty fond of. Had being the operative word here.
- 20:57Phil: Now, after losing his job and his girl on the same day, a chance hookup with a mysterious girl turns him into Gunpunch, Earth's last hope against the invasion of the evil, shape-shifting Draxons, or plotting on our planet.
- 21:10Phil: Or at least that's what he believes. Also, it sounds way more glamorous than it actually is. To be honest, Evan is not that psyched about it, but at least his recruiters is.
- 21:20Phil: Er, his recruiter's the United Plans Coalition. Pay alright. Kinda. Look, he really needs a gig. Armed with a high-tech symbiotic armor grafted onto his body, Evan will try to eliminate all Draxons in his path before they can take over…
- 21:33Phil: every human being's body on this planet and complete their invasion. His sister Dee, the alien, hollow-constructed Nell, Bob, the criminal, Dee's fiancee, Stacy, and a few more colorful characters will be along for the ride, helping Evan out.
- 21:48Phil: Not that he asked any of them, but, you know, they're all kind of around, I guess. Through it all, Evan will have to deal with the city's reaction to their new hero, huge expectations from the new mission, his old boss, Alice Magnus, and the fact that maybe they didn't really tell him the whole truth when they picked him up for the job. He will also get beat up. A lot.
- 22:08Phil: We're gonna have a final cutoff of March 30th, this coming Monday, and, gonna be in stores May 13th.
- 22:18Tyler Johnson: Alright, the next book up is The Marshmallows. The limited online cartoonist Anna Laura Sullivan makes her graphic novel debut with a captivating adventure about misfits exploring the dark edges of their world.
- 22:34Tyler Johnson: After a nuclear war plunged the world into darkness, the last beacon of hope is the island utopia called Slumber City.
- 22:43Tyler Johnson: In this rainy, happy town, one angst-filled urchin doesn't see what there is to smile about.
- 22:50Tyler Johnson: But, after being taken in by the elderly Marvin and Pearl, Urchin is pulled into their quest to solve the dark, damp riddles lurking outside Slumber City and uncover the plans of its mysterious mayor. The final order cut off from this, is going to be…
- 23:08Tyler Johnson: April 13th, we'll be in shops May 19th, and this is from IDW.
- 23:21Phil: Is this one me?
- 23:23Tyler Johnson: Oh, wow, yeah.
- 23:24Phil: Sorry about that. Pandola by Kyungchi Kit. After the apocalypse, the Earth is nothing but dust and ruin. From the heart of the desert, a single city rises, ruled by the Demon King who brought the world to its knees. To save his closest friend, Summer, Esper joins a band of wanderers bound by uneasy alliances and hidden motives. Their path leads straight into the Demon King's domain. But the truth awaiting them inside the city of demons may re…
- 23:48Phil: write everything they thought they knew about the end and the beginning of the world. Gonna have a final order cut off of April 13th in stores, May
- 23:57Phil: 6th from Mad Cave.
- 24:01Tad Eggleston: School for Extraterrestrial Girls, Volume 3, Girls in Space, from Jeremy Whitley and Jamie Noguchi.
- 24:08Tad Eggleston: School is out for the summer, and it's finally time for extraterrestrial girls to take a break and head to the beach.
- 24:14Tad Eggleston: Or, it would be, if the world wasn't about to be destroyed. An armada of the last Chilian Empire, terrorist people are on the way to Earth, and nobody knows why. They're only days before the strongest battlecruisers from the largest and most dangerous empire in the galaxy arrive, and our girls are on the clock to help their headmasters figure out why they're coming.
- 24:36Tad Eggleston: And how to defend the world.
- 24:38Tad Eggleston: Are they coming to eliminate Misako after destroying her home planet? Are they coming to reclaim Terra for some crime of her family? Or is there something far more dangerous on their agenda? Terra, Misako, Summer Cat and their friends are back, and this time the fate of the Earth is in their hands. Let's just hope they figure it out in time.
- 24:58Tad Eggleston: This is from Papercuts. I love the earlier…
- 25:03Tad Eggleston: Volumes. Jeremy Whitley is a friend of the podcast, and you should all go read it. The final order cutoff is April 27th, and in stores on May 20th.
- 25:14Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 25:15Tyler Johnson: Now, this book looks awesome. This is Squallow and Mage, from Kira… Dogeon Hikino?
- 25:23Tyler Johnson: In this first book of an epic debut, middle-grade fantasy graphic novel duology.
- 25:30Tyler Johnson: by Kara Dodagon Hakino, Mage and her shark best friend Squallo set off on a wild adventure filled with mythical and powerful creatures from Filipino folklore to save their world from the wrath of Bakunawa.
- 25:47Tyler Johnson: Perfect for fans of Hilda Folk and Final Fantasy.
- 25:51Tyler Johnson: After losing her father in an attack by the evil Tikbalan, Mage and her friend Squalo set off on an important quest far from home to honor her father's last wish, find the Bakunawa, the Guardian of the Sea. But Mage and Squallow don't know where to find the Bakunawa.
- 26:10Tyler Johnson: And the evil Tiktalung was only one underling of Ventrolio.
- 26:16Tyler Johnson: The Nightmare marker of… the Nightmare Maker, who is hunting Mage at any cost. Mage and Squallow's journey takes them all over Mundo, facing monsters and possessed minions of Ventrolio.
- 26:30Tyler Johnson: Until they hear news of an angry Bakunawa that would rather destroy ships and summon storms than help sailors. Why would Mage's father send them to someone so dangerous? Can Mage and Squalo uncover the truth before the Bakunawa unleashes her wrath and plunges all of Mundo into chaos?
- 26:51Tyler Johnson: This looks really cool. It's final order cutoff of, May 4th, and in stores on May 27th. Who is this… who is putting this out? Top Shelf.
- 27:06Tad Eggleston: Is it top shelf?
- 27:08Tad Eggleston: Top shelf is generally… no.
- 27:10Phil: No, that doesn't look like… HarperCollins?
- 27:13Tad Eggleston: HarperCollins.
- 27:14Tyler Johnson: Hey, the notes on our note say top shelf, so…
- 27:18Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 27:19Phil: -Oh.
- 27:22Tyler Johnson: So, right there.
- 27:23Phil: Who could have made such an egregious error?
- 27:26Tyler Johnson: I don't know one of us.
- 27:27Phil: Now it says Harper Alley.
- 27:30Tyler Johnson: What the? No, it's…
- 27:32Tad Eggleston: This is top shelf on our…
- 27:35Tad Eggleston: On our document, just what he's saying, and it does.
- 27:38Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 27:38Tad Eggleston: at it.
- 27:39Tyler Johnson: That's what I was reading.
- 27:40Phil: Squallow and Mage versus the Rage of.
- 27:42Tad Eggleston: Oh, oh, no, you're looking at marshmallows, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:46Phil: Yeah.
- 27:47Tad Eggleston: You're looking at Marshmallows as top… top shelf. It says Harbor Alley for Swallowing Mage. You didn't roll… scroll down, Tyler.
- 27:54Tyler Johnson: Oh, God.
- 27:58Tyler Johnson: things.
- 27:59Tad Eggleston: It was Tyler's fault!
- 28:01Tyler Johnson: Thanks, Tyler!
- 28:02Phil: Continuing To pull one over.
- 28:04Tad Eggleston: Collection.
- 28:05Tyler Johnson: We just screw it up again, Tyler, now we have to start over. Alright, babe.
- 28:08Tad Eggleston: Yo?
- 28:09Tyler Johnson: Stop.
- 28:11Tad Eggleston: No, no.
- 28:12Phil: This podcast is aggressively unedited. We live with our shame.
- 28:16Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:17Phil: Exactly. First collection up, we have Colossal, Volume 1 from
- 28:22Phil: Rutile and Diane Trueck. Love, humor, and powerlifting collide in Colossal. A massively successful international webtoon now presented in print about a young aristocrat who's about to discover that the heart may be the strongest muscle of all. Jade, a young French noblewoman, has a problem.
- 28:40Phil: Her parents expect her to marry a rich prince to save their dwindling family fortune, but Jade doesn't want to fall in line or in love. All she wants to do is pump iron and get those gains. Jade's obsession with powerlifting and getting strong is at odds with the image of a delicate flower that society expects from her. When, in a fit of rage, she sends a fellow high society teen, obnoxious pretty boy Nathaniel flying through the buffet table during a ball.
- 29:04Phil: It looks like Jade's secret may be out, but before a scandal erupts, the quick-thinking teen comes up with a brilliant excuse. Love made her do it. Now, Jade finds herself in a dizzying courtship dance between spoiled Nathaniel, Alexander, a stable hand she wants to get lifting tips from, Eloise, a mean girl hiding a soft heart, and Simon, Nathaniel's insufferable best friend. Can Jade keep her secret and learn that strength isn't
- 29:28Phil: Only measured by how much one can deadlift.
- 29:30Phil: Silly, heartfelt, and full of surprises. Colossal is a young adult rom-com graphic novel with a shoujo-manga twist perfect for readers who loved Cursed Princess Club, Heartstopper, and True.
- 29:41Phil: Gonna have a final order cutoff of this coming Monday, March 30th, and in-stores May 6th, from Abrams.
- 29:50Tad Eggleston: Tyler.
- 29:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Hellboy! I, was kind of daydreaming there for a second. This comics collection… this is the second collection of Hellboy's earliest days as a BPRD agent. Takes him across the globe in adventures that tie into the darkest corners of the Hellboy and BPRD comics.
- 30:10Tyler Johnson: Join Hellboy and his fellow agents on globetrotting horrifying mystery adventures from a fire ghost in a forgotten dinosaur theme park?
- 30:19Tyler Johnson: to vengeful demons in Hong Kong, Cold War weapon tests that lead to mutilated monsters in the South Pacific, to a forgotten ghost in New York City's Potter's Field, and more. Plus the true story of Hellboy's turn on the silver screen in the Mexican Luchador films.
- 30:37Tyler Johnson: This volume collects Hellboy and the BPRD across volumes 1955, 56, and 57 from a slew of extraordinary talents, including Mike Norton, Allison Sampson, Sean Martinboro, and, of course, Mike Mignola. This is from,
- 30:55Tyler Johnson: Dark Horse, the final order cutoff will be April 13th, and in shops July 14th.
- 31:06Tad Eggleston: Alrighty. Finally, we have Powers 25, Volume 1.
- 31:13Tad Eggleston: We may have mentioned that we like powers. Yeah. I like powers, at least.
- 31:17Tyler Johnson: I think everybody…
- 31:18Tad Eggleston: like Spowers. Powers is so good. Powers is…
- 31:21Phil: I haven't ready yet, but I've heard it's good.
- 31:23Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 31:24Tad Eggleston: Running independent comics in history, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary landmark.
- 31:29Tyler Johnson: Todd McFarlane would argue with you about that. Spawn, I think claims that record.
- 31:36Phil: Well, this just says one up.
- 31:37Tad Eggleston: Okay, it says, one of…
- 31:39Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay.
- 31:42Tyler Johnson: I thought it was trying to say it's the longest…
- 31:45Phil: The only longest-running…
- 31:47Tad Eggleston: And, like, neither one of them are as long as… as… Love & Rockets or Usagi Yojimbo.
- 31:55Tyler Johnson: I'm just saying, that's what Todd McFarlane has recently claimed.
- 31:58Phil: Is Todd McFarlane paying you right now, Tyler?
- 32:01Tyler Johnson: Yes, yes he is.
- 32:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he and Eric Larson, like, fight over who has the longest-running superhero comic. I get it. Whatever.
- 32:13Tyler Johnson: Alright, I will…
- 32:13Tad Eggleston: Fun dam!
- 32:14Tyler Johnson: Iris adult.
- 32:15Tad Eggleston: look at a world of heroes through the eyes of Special Homicide Officer Detective Cutter and her brand new partner, and the first power to ever make Powers Division, Mobius Moon.
- 32:26Tad Eggleston: Under the watchful eyes of legendary captains Dina Pilgrim and Anki Sunrise, the new detectives are running through a minefield of all new dangers. A new, unsolvable powers murderer has Cutter and Mooner questioning
- 32:40Tad Eggleston: EVERYTHING about the world and their place in it. The new series is also a celebration of Power's very happy home at Dark Horse, where it joins other stuff,
- 32:51Tad Eggleston: It includes a bonus pinup?
- 32:53Tad Eggleston: Gallery from Mignola, Stan Sakai, David Mack, Scott Hepburn.
- 32:58Tad Eggleston: Alex Maliv, Eric Powell, Jill Thompson,
- 33:02Tad Eggleston: Along with Powers 25, the entire Classic Powers Comics series is available as several omnibuses, now from Dark Horse Comics and Jinx World. So, yes, go get… go get your powers!
- 33:17Tad Eggleston: Get your powers, I say. Final order cutoff is… on… April 6th.
- 33:25Tad Eggleston: And it will be in stores on July 7th.
- 33:32Tad Eggleston: So… Speaking of…
- 33:36Tad Eggleston: final order cut-offs, and just because we should remind people from time to time who don't know the lingo, final order cutoff is the day by which you need to tell your comic shop, please order me a copy. After that.
- 33:50Tad Eggleston: They can try, but they're no longer guaranteed to be able to get it for you.
- 33:55Tyler Johnson: Guys, I'm always playing with fire. I put in my order, like, a day before the final order cut off.
- 34:03Tad Eggleston: You could still adjust it up till… the cutoff.
- 34:07Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's true.
- 34:09Tad Eggleston: that.
- 34:09Tyler Johnson: I really should give myself more time than that, in case I hear about something else.
- 34:14Tad Eggleston: I should've ordered.
- 34:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah. Tad, can I read down the list?
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: I was gonna ask you to. I mean, I might toss in some comments here or there, but I was gonna ask you to.
- 34:26Tyler Johnson: For Monday, March 30th, get these in before then. Ape, from Rich Tommaso from Image, June 17th, that's coming out, yep. Cal Exit, say goodbye to Hollywood, from Matteo Pizzolo and C. Granda from Black Mask on April 29th.
- 34:44Tyler Johnson: Crawl Space from Violet Kitchen. That's coming up from Bulligan Press on May 6th.
- 34:52Tyler Johnson: Doom 2099, Rage of Doom from Frank Thierry and Von Randall and Poon Jian Yoon from Marvel on April 29th.
- 35:03Tyler Johnson: Everglide from, looks like Carlos Gonzalez, putting out, from Floating World.
- 35:09Tyler Johnson: on June 24th?
- 35:12Tyler Johnson: From Parts Unknown by Adriano Arianello and Daniel Covell, Jordan and JP Jordan from Pesto Comics, April 29th. G.I. Joe Real American Hero, is it supposed to be Triple S Filent Missions?
- 35:30Phil: Like a snake.
- 35:31Tyler Johnson: Silent Missions Copperhead. Okay.
- 35:34Tyler Johnson: That's from high reporter Romulo, Ferrado, Gerardo, Jr, from Image on April 22nd.
- 35:44Tyler Johnson: Head Lopper, that's one of my,
- 35:47Tyler Johnson: favorite, right now, head bopper from, Andrew McLeon, from Image, on April 22nd.
- 35:55Tyler Johnson: Innards from Rob Gilroy, Sam Lotfy from Ignition Press on May 6th.
- 36:01Tyler Johnson: in your skin from Aditya Bidhikar?
- 36:06Tyler Johnson: So, from Image on April 22nd.
- 36:10Phil: I'm getting that one, looks really good.
- 36:12Tad Eggleston: was…
- 36:13Phil: Yeah, it looks awesome.
- 36:14Tyler Johnson: Okay. I love it when…
- 36:16Tad Eggleston: Letterers take up their pens and make words.
- 36:21Tyler Johnson: In Phantoms, from Jim Bishops, coming up from Onei on April 22nd.
- 36:27Tyler Johnson: The new history of the DC Universe, the Dakota incident, will be the second printing…
- 36:34Tad Eggleston: This is where I'll jump in really quick, and then I'll have you go ahead. We don't often…
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: like, plug second printings, but… Yeah.
- 36:45Tad Eggleston: It has been… let me actually pull it up, and I'll plug the site. There is now a site called DCSoWhite.com, which keeps track of how long it's been since there was a ongoing comic book
- 37:04Tad Eggleston: Wow. In the mainline universe.
- 37:07Tad Eggleston: Mainline continuity of DC.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: Headed by a black character.
- 37:15Tad Eggleston: And right now, the last issue in the mainline DC universe
- 37:23Tad Eggleston: headlined by a black character was, I Am Batman No. 18, published on February 14th, 2023, or 1,132 days ago.
- 37:37Tyler Johnson: Okay…
- 37:39Phil: Damn, I could've sworn that.
- 37:40Tad Eggleston: is… This is despite the fact that.
- 37:44Phil: Oh, limited… yeah, Cyborg, I was gonna say Cyborg.
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: has milestone.
- 37:48Phil: Yeah.
- 37:49Tad Eggleston: DC has static, and Hardware, and Icon, and Rocket, and all of these characters that have been wildly successful through the years.
- 38:02Tad Eggleston: But they don't use them.
- 38:03Tad Eggleston: So, Joe, when, when, when… the…
- 38:08Tad Eggleston: the, new history of the DC Universe Dakota incident was first announced, started… started an internet campaign to push for 100,000 sales on it.
- 38:20Phil: make it, like…
- 38:20Tad Eggleston: impossible to… and, you know, they're well on their way. They sold out the first printing in days, and it went to second printing, and the goal is to keep… keep pushing until we see, you know.
- 38:35Tad Eggleston: An ongoing static book, maybe?
- 38:38Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 38:39Phil: Which is absolutely crazy that, I mean, I think he's only had miniseries, more or less.
- 38:43Tyler Johnson: Hey, guys.
- 38:44Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, since the original series.
- 38:46Phil: Yeah, well, and he hasn't had an actual… even a… I don't even think, like, a miniseries since Milestone has joined DC Continuity, so it's, yeah, it's fun.
- 38:54Tad Eggleston: Well, no, cause…
- 38:56Tad Eggleston: He's had two miniseries as part of the… I mean, they're… see, this is part of the problem. I mean, he's part of an ongoing, or a miniseries right now. There's… there's… there's Batman Static Beyond.
- 39:08Phil: That's not mainline in continuity.
- 39:09Tad Eggleston: Yay.
- 39:11Tad Eggleston: You're true? You're true.
- 39:15Tad Eggleston: But, I mean, I don't even care if it's mainline continuity, like, there should be…
- 39:22Tad Eggleston: Like, the fact that they have the ability to do… Ongoing milestone, and don't.
- 39:29Phil: Exactly. It's, it's really sad.
- 39:33Tad Eggleston: And for that matter, which is the one of their cartoons… I mean, frankly, the cartoon that was arguably the most successful after Batman the Animated Series, that is not streaming anywhere, you have to buy the seasons on Amazon, is static shock.
- 39:50Phil: That is… I love Static Shock, that is… I swear it was on somewhere at one point.
- 39:55Tad Eggleston: Briefly.
- 39:56Phil: Yeah.
- 39:57Phil: If it's not there, it doesn't.
- 39:59Tyler Johnson: Take a look at the photo I just texted you guys.
- 40:01Phil: I did say, that's pretty awesome.
- 40:02Tyler Johnson: Literally just came into my shop yesterday, is the first appearance of Static, and so I picked it up, so I'm pretty excited about that, not to.
- 40:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:15Tyler Johnson: I mean, it's just kind of ironic we're talking about static right now.
- 40:18Tad Eggleston: Well.
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: and I'll tell people, go listen to our Milestone Book Club, pick up the Milestone Compendiums, though that's another thing. Like, we've got these wonderful phone book compendiums, but unless you're already a fan, you're not dropping 60 bucks for 1,000 pages.
- 40:34Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 40:34Tad Eggleston: We have them in your typical… 5 to 10 issue.
- 40:40Tad Eggleston: Trades as well.
- 40:42Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: Like, there is a static one now, for the beginning… arc and static.
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: But, like…
- 40:54Tad Eggleston: every once in a while when we're doing the Milestone Book Club, we will take a look at what else came out the month of whatever we're reading, and it's like, holy fuck, these were the best comics on the shelf!
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: at the time. Like, not even close. Like, maybe there's a Vertigo title or two that's in the same quality league, right?
- 41:16Phil: That's amazing.
- 41:17Tad Eggleston: And somehow, Completely…
- 41:23Phil: Yeah, somehow. Big ol' air quotes. Somehow. I wonder what it could be. I wonder what it could be.
- 41:27Tad Eggleston: So, anyway, anyway, off my soapbox, because, you know, I get to be… and Marcus is better on the soapbox, but that's why we put a second punching on.
- 41:37Tyler Johnson: So we're out at Second Printing, and it includes creators like Joseph Village, Stephanie Williams, Morgan Hampton, and Nicholas Draper Ivey, Carlo Pagudlean, Valentine D'Alandro, and Edwin Gallman. This is from DC Milestone, out April 22nd.
- 41:56Tyler Johnson: Next up, Oddballed Odyssey from Tony Millionaire. Jim Campbell from Bad Idea on April 29th.
- 42:03Tyler Johnson: Penny and the Yeti, from James Gasparo, Amber Akin from Paper Cuts on April.
- 42:10Tad Eggleston: This is another one that I tossed in late, because we just had Jimmy and Amber on. They were fantastic guests. I got to read the book.
- 42:20Tad Eggleston: It's outstanding, and it's outstanding in ways that…
- 42:26Tad Eggleston: Like, you can't help but read it and go… I can't believe that they…
- 42:31Tad Eggleston: got a publisher to make this, because it's that real. Like, it's a story about… a young girl…
- 42:42Tad Eggleston: Whose parents are at a turbulent point in their relationship.
- 42:48Tad Eggleston: Coping with that.
- 42:50Tad Eggleston: Like, and that's just… you know, it's not…
- 42:55Tad Eggleston: not the type of thing that we're used to seeing. We're used to, oh, kids don't need to know anything about… no, it affects their lives, and to be able to look at it from
- 43:05Tad Eggleston: From that angle is amazing.
- 43:07Tyler Johnson: Seattle.
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I can't recommend this book enough.
- 43:10Tyler Johnson: I buy pretty much everything I can find that paper cuts put out for my store.
- 43:14Tad Eggleston: They're outstanding.
- 43:15Tyler Johnson: Yep. Okay, physical education, from Joanna Mosey from Pow Pow on May 6th.
- 43:22Tyler Johnson: Planet Atmos Exordium, from Dr. Brushnell Rob McEvity, Andrea Cucci from Mad Cave on April 22nd, Protopius Collection from…
- 43:38Tad Eggleston: Protopias. Protopias.
- 43:41Tyler Johnson: What did I call it?
- 43:42Phil: I just said pearl.
- 43:43Tad Eggleston: pious.
- 43:44Tyler Johnson: Oh!
- 43:45Tyler Johnson: Protope?
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: videos.
- 43:47Tyler Johnson: Copeless plug.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: Utopia or Dystopia?
- 43:51Phil: Yeah.
- 43:51Tad Eggleston: Utopia.
- 43:52Phil: I'd eat a Protopaya, that sounds pretty delicious to me.
- 43:54Tyler Johnson: I am so sorry about that, listeners. I have not learned to read. From Mark Russell… Mark Russell and Lacey, Danny Hogan and Felipe Cunha, Sierra Ni Chirik.
- 44:07Tyler Johnson: Joshua Locke, Kim, and Max Fostner.
- 44:10Tyler Johnson: Catherine Murdock, Michael Kost, and Karen Grant, Mark Russell again, and ACO, and Yatasha Wormack and Ilthia… Ilitha Martinez. This is from AWA Futurific, out on May 27th. And this is where.
- 44:29Tad Eggleston: I had missed that they were collecting this, and I'm really happy that they are, because these were all really great, like, 48-page one-shots.
- 44:38Tad Eggleston: of what a Protopia is, and I've talked about it a number of times, because we've highlighted a lot of these as they've either… either the week before, the week after, or sometimes both when they've come out. But the idea is…
- 44:52Tad Eggleston: Rather than… the perfect world utopia, or the crumbling world dystopia. It's supposed to be a realistic but progressive
- 45:06Tad Eggleston: world. In other words, like.
- 45:08Tad Eggleston: We don't gloss over things that are going wrong or could go wrong, but they try to envision something… a path that we could…
- 45:21Tad Eggleston: realistically go down for something better, and I've just… I've loved every one of these.
- 45:28Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 45:29Tyler Johnson: Let's see, Red Roots, from Lorenzo di Felice, from Image on April 29th.
- 45:37Tyler Johnson: We have two songs, hardcover from Carlos, Giuffoni, Juan Doe from Rocket Ship Entertainment on May 20th, and Unemployed Killer Support Group from Rio, that's coming out from Titan on April 22nd.
- 45:58Phil: Alright, next up in crowdfunding, just a couple days left, Even the Stars Will Fall, number one, from Florian Akiname and
- 46:07Phil: Fimpei Aliu, and Hassanat Samein al-Hal on Kickstarter through March 25th, so if you're listening to this Monday or Tuesday, you've got just a little bit of time. Sew Buttons, who's My Daddy and what does he do? from Jonathan Bayliss on Kickstarter through March 28th, the end of the week. Action Philosophers, Modernity Bites from Fred Van Lenti, and Ryan Dunlavy, Rocket Ship Entertainment on Kickstarter through April 8th.

- 46:44Phil: The Monster of Blackenstein, not to be confused with Blackenstein, by David F. Walker and Marcelo Di Chiara on Kickstarter through April 13th.
- 46:54Phil: Dan Dare, First Contact by Alex…
- 46:56Tad Eggleston: really quick, and you're gonna tell them to go listen to our talk with Alex DeCampi as well, and you should, but listen, I spent two and a half hours with David Walker on… Heck yeah!
- 47:07Tad Eggleston: Thursday night, and oh my god, was it amazing? So, like, go listen to that now.
- 47:13Tad Eggleston: Okay, you're back?
- 47:14Phil: Absolutely, and we're back, and we're back with Dan Dare, First Contact by Alex DeCampi and Mark Lamming with B7 Comics on Kickstarter through April 22nd. We talked to her…
- 47:23Tad Eggleston: I'll go listen to the couple hours that we spent with Alex DeCampi.
- 47:27Phil: That was a fun time.
- 47:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, okay, they're back again.
- 47:30Phil: Absolutely. Then there is Business As Usual, a 64-page novella by Mark Bouchard, Shelby Criswell, gonna be some…
- 47:40Phil: eco-punk, comedy workplace drama. It's like a, it's like a dark comedy about our, our, modern situation. It's, it's very fascinating. On Kickstarter, launching to, you know, Monday, March 23rd, so by the time you're listening to this, you can go ahead and support it. Same with Hollow… Probably.
- 47:57Tad Eggleston: We might get it up tonight. We'll see.
- 47:59Phil: Okay.
- 48:00Tad Eggleston: I've been getting them up on Monday more often lately, so that's fair.
- 48:04Phil: Yeah. Same thing with Hollow Ground, edited by Michelle Abinator. Gonna have stories from Anthony Oliveira, Ian McEwen, Anas.
- 48:15Phil: Abdul Haq and Heather Vaughn, Megan Camerina and Vash Taylor, MK Traum, JP Jordan and Len Gogo, Abby Frisco and Chris Ho.

- 48:37Phil: one from Meacham's, and
- 48:39Phil: Duna Holler, one from Chloe Brailsford, who also does really fantastic covers, so it'll be great to see her writing, writing a story. Lydia Monette and Dominette, one from then, previously mentioned, Michelle Abinator and Jessica Fong. That's coming from Deathline Comics on Kickstarter, launching March 23rd, so by the time you're listening to this, you should be able to support it.
- 49:00Phil: And then, last but certainly not least, Stephen Frank's Complete Palomino.
- 49:06Tad Eggleston: Stephan Frank.
- 49:07Phil: Stefan Frank's Complete Palomino. I have been, hearing you talk about him only for a couple years now, since, since, Howard Chaikin turned you on to him. So I should know it's Stefan Frank by now, for his…
- 49:18Tad Eggleston: Well, and I remember it all the time, because, you know, I try to ask people how to pronounce their names, but when I asked, and I guess, I said, is it Steven Frank? And he's like, actually, it's Stefan Frank.
- 49:31Phil: Steph and Frank, nice. Yeah, that is funny.
- 49:33Tad Eggleston: Oh, I'd managed to… I'd managed to mess them both up.
- 49:36Phil: There you go. But the complete Palomino, all six volumes from Dark Planet Comics on Kickstarter, that one is launching soon, but since Tad was talking to him recently, we are highlighting it. Get it on your radar, get ready.
- 49:48Tad Eggleston: Well, more importantly, go to Kickstarter and click that notify… notify upon launch, that helps them win the algorithm, that sort of thing, and by the time you… by the…
- 49:58Tad Eggleston: By the time you…
- 50:00Tad Eggleston: are listening to this, there will be a two-hour conversation with me and Stefan up as well.
- 50:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, to be honest, the… and this is no offense to Joe, the hour with Joe was great too, but, like, the 5 hours I spent talking to David Walker and Stephen Frank over the last 2 days have just been…
- 50:22Tad Eggleston: like, so… rejuvenating.
- 50:28Phil: Nice.
- 50:29Phil: That's good to hear.
- 50:30Tad Eggleston: So rejuvenating.
- 50:31Tad Eggleston: So yeah, I hope that… I hope that people enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed recording them.
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: I'll jump in for the Humble Bundles.
- 50:42Tad Eggleston: The Indie Comics United Super Bundle of awesome stuff, $18 for 60 items for the Comic Legal Defense Fund was extended again, so it's available through March 26th, as is The Love & Rockets and more, the collected Hernandez brothers from Fanographics. $18 for 57 items for the ACLU is through March 26th as well.

- 51:06Tad Eggleston: Comic Book Legal Defense Fund through March 31st, The Art of Alex Ross, George Perez, and more from Dynamite Entertainment, a large collection of art books, $18 for 35 items for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund through April 2nd. And added this week, we have the best of Joe Hill at IDW, $18 for 15 items, but those 15 items include
- 51:29Tad Eggleston: All the volumes of lock and key, so that alone makes it worth the money.
- 51:35Phil: Yeah, it's a good series.
- 51:35Tad Eggleston: Industry Charitable Foundation through April 9th.
- 51:41Tad Eggleston: So, we're only, like, an hour in, and we're two amazing books.
- 51:47Phil: A lot of hype.
- 51:48Tyler Johnson: I was just gonna say, guys, can we go a little faster?
- 51:51Phil: Absolutely.
- 51:52Tad Eggleston: I try, I'm…
- 51:52Tyler Johnson: I wanna go eat!
- 51:54Tad Eggleston: Me too. Me too. So,
- 51:57Tad Eggleston: Three amazing books this week. It was hard, even though I didn't get to as many of the books as I wanted to, which is probably the only reason why Kyle Starks didn't make the list, because he had…
- 52:09Tyler Johnson: hey.
- 52:10Tad Eggleston: Three books that I know I'm gonna love all of them, but I've only read one of them so far.
- 52:16Tyler Johnson: Wrestle Heist. It better have been wrestle.
- 52:18Tad Eggleston: Wrestle Heist is the one that I read. Did you read Wrestle Heist?
- 52:22Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that was the best out of the three. I bet all three.
- 52:25Tad Eggleston: Did you notice our friends at the podcast?
- 52:27Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: Did you see Patrick and Dow from Challengers and Rest of Heist?
- 52:33Tyler Johnson: I did.
- 52:34Tad Eggleston: As the court… as the ringside announcers, I loved it. Yep.
- 52:39Tyler Johnson: Weren't they in the previous issue, too?
- 52:42Tad Eggleston: I don't remember.
- 52:44Tyler Johnson: I could have sworn that Challengers was mentioned before.
- 52:48Tad Eggleston: Well, well, like, Patrick is one of the guys, or I think both of them even, but certainly Patrick is in the back.
- 52:56Tad Eggleston: answering all of the… you know, the… each issue has the wrestling questions that they… they survey their group, so he's in every issue back there, but… but this time they were drawn in. If they were drawn in the last time.
- 53:10Tad Eggleston: It didn't… didn't jump at me the way it did this time.
- 53:14Tyler Johnson: Hell.
- 53:15Tyler Johnson: So good.
- 53:16Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, it was a good week in comics, but I had all that stuff I was talking about having done in the last few days, and…
- 53:22Tad Eggleston: Managing to cram in all the reading I wanted to do along with it was… So…
- 53:26Tyler Johnson: Your number one is in my pile. It hasn't been read yet, so sell me on it. Well, I picked it up based on…
- 53:34Tyler Johnson: move.
- 53:35Tad Eggleston: I love Caitlin Yarsky, so it was gonna get read.
- 53:38Tad Eggleston: Relatively quickly. So Dead Teenagers, number one, from Jude Ellison S. Doyle and Caitlin Yarsky.
- 53:47Tad Eggleston: I don't even know completely how to sell it yet, except that, like…
- 53:52Tad Eggleston: It seems like they're… they're… they're in, like, every teenage horror, you know, like.
- 53:58Tad Eggleston: scenario number blah blah blah, and they'll go through stuff, and there's always the one that survives, and no matter what hap… and she's even thinking, oh, I don't know what's gonna happen next, but I'm always the one that survives, and it sucks. And, you know, so they go through a bunch of those scenarios, but then something goes different, and… and…
- 54:17Tad Eggleston: And that's kind of where we're left, and… Yeah.
- 54:21Tyler Johnson: I know, I'm excited to read it.
- 54:23Tad Eggleston: Caitlin's art is always amazing.
- 54:26Tyler Johnson: And… Yes.
- 54:27Tad Eggleston: This is a teaser issue one. I can't tell you much about the series yet. I don't know much about this series yet, except that the setup is, like, this group of teenagers
- 54:40Tad Eggleston: know that they're living out all of these ser… you know, that they've done this before, so…
- 54:49Tad Eggleston: Like, the hows and the whys are still…
- 54:53Tad Eggleston: Still kind of to be determined.
- 54:57Tad Eggleston: The plot thickened in Night City No. 2.
- 55:02Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah, this was so good.
- 55:04Tad Eggleston: Matt Kent and David Lapham from Dark House Flux House, or Dark Horse Flux House. And the plot thickened as well in Dead, or Barbarian Behind Bars number 2 from Elliot Kalen and Andrea Moody at Mad Cave.
- 55:20Tad Eggleston: It also had a nice Easter egg for those of us who had loved, the Unfinished, because it's an Aftershock book, Maniac of New York series that this team had also
- 55:34Tad Eggleston: Done.
- 55:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so…
- 55:39Tyler Johnson: Remember Aftershock, Ben? That was a cool… that was a cool line until they weren't cool.
- 55:44Phil: Until they stop…
- 55:45Tad Eggleston: It turned out they weren't paying people.
- 55:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 55:48Phil: That they were… yeah.
- 55:49Tad Eggleston: Anyway, Phil, take a walk.
- 55:52Phil: Oh yeah, so this week was the return of Batwoman from, Greg Rucka and Danny, which was… it was a good… it was a good first issue. It was… I liked how…
- 56:03Phil: it was, touching on Batwoman's past.
- 56:08Phil: like, kind of reminding you of a lot of the hits from Rucka's first run with the character, without it being…
- 56:15Phil: super exposition heavy, so it was still, like, an emotional issue, and I think Danny's a really great fit for… for Batwoman. I… I put in a note, I'm ready to get hurt again, just because this is now the third…
- 56:26Phil: Batwoman series that, I'll be jumping on that I'll be reading, and the first two did not get, satisfying conclusions, so I'm really hoping that this time,
- 56:35Phil: you know, Rucka gets to tell all the story he wants to. In terms…
- 56:40Tad Eggleston: I mean, my minor, minor criticism on it is I haven't read his other Batwoman stuff, and I felt it while I was reading it.
- 56:49Phil: you felt that you hadn't read it before? Yeah, that's fair, because, like, the character…
- 56:53Tad Eggleston: I don't think it… you know, and, like, a lot of times when that's true, by the end of Issue 2, you don't have to have read.
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: anything before.
- 57:05Tad Eggleston: Because it's just, like, a lot of the times, it's not as much that you need to have read the stuff before.
- 57:11Tad Eggleston: As much as, because there's stuff before, they're giving a slow burn start, rather than…
- 57:18Tad Eggleston: jumping you in and giving you lots of info… you know, here, I felt like there was a lot of information that didn't tie together in a way that I understood yet.
- 57:28Phil: Yeah.
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: Makes sense.
- 57:30Phil: Yeah, it definitely does. You know, it's one… I would highly, highly recommend.
- 57:35Tad Eggleston: And I liked it, that's just what kept it out of…
- 57:38Phil: I could understand that. We should do… I feel like that is a great responsibility, that if, you know, your goodness. …to touching on at least Elegy, because that's the thing, is that, you know, that's where… that's pretty much the entirety of the character Alice, her sister, is… is going on with, so…
- 57:56Phil: So yeah, yeah, really great stuff. But then in, you know, I've been rewatching a few series from…
- 58:02Phil: anime series from… that I haven't seen in years, Paranoia Agent, from Satoshi Kon was…
- 58:08Phil: It's so funny how, when I saw it for the first time when I was 14, it was easily the most fucked up thing I'd ever seen, and now it was kind of like, okay, yeah, that's… there's… there's definitely disturbing stuff here, but I've, I've certainly… certainly grown a lot, you know, it didn't…
- 58:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 58:24Phil: my mind in the same sort of way.
- 58:27Phil: In that regard, I'm also, rewatching Eon Genesis Evangelion for the first time since I was 14, and that has been absolutely astounding, some of the best mecha action, and I've just hit the point where the series is going off the rails and getting weird, so that's why I've been up too long with, you know, to check in on our old One Piece race. I read… I have now hit up to 60 chapters of Blue Period.
- 58:51Phil: I think I've… I'm closing in on the end of volume…
- 58:55Phil: 14? There's, like, 4 more that I have till I'm all caught up, so… yeah, I've just been, you know…
- 59:01Phil: Charging ahead, and, you know, it's like…
- 59:04Phil: tad you, and you… it's like you… it's like you don't like One Piece anymore.
- 59:07Tad Eggleston: I… no, I really, really, really wanted for this to be the month, or the week that… that was…
- 59:13Tad Eggleston: Not becalmed?
- 59:17Tad Eggleston: But, that… that it just didn't happen.
- 59:21Tad Eggleston: Didn't happen.
- 59:23Tad Eggleston: I'm still becalmed.
- 59:27Tad Eggleston: It's spring break, so maybe, but I've… I've scheduled myself a pretty busy spring break, so I don't want to make promises.
- 59:39Tyler Johnson: Are you going on a…
- 59:40Tad Eggleston: The fact that I'm not trying to keep up with you anymore, definitely has been,
- 59:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, I think that if you want to get me going, Phil, you need to start reading One Piece.
- 59:52Tyler Johnson: I should start back up.
- 59:53Tad Eggleston: me, then.
- 59:54Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 59:55Tad Eggleston: I'll be motivated.
- 1:00:00Phil: I mean, and, you know, at least, I mean, you still… I thought the motivation was still you want to be caught up by the time it's over.
- 1:00:06Tad Eggleston: I mean, that is a motivation.
- 1:00:09Tyler Johnson: It's not working, it's not at all!
- 1:00:11Tad Eggleston: A motivation. I think I should also point out that, like.
- 1:00:15Tad Eggleston: As much as I love you for it, Phil, sending me this here switch has definitely affected.
- 1:00:22Phil: The amount of time.
- 1:00:24Tad Eggleston: Etc.
- 1:00:25Tad Eggleston: topics.
- 1:00:26Tyler Johnson: I'm guessing there's been a lot of people take ahead of this.
- 1:00:28Phil: Obscure manga race reading has come to fruition.
- 1:00:32Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 1:00:34Tad Eggleston: I'm certain that I'll get there, but I have home runs to hit, and bases to steal, and…
- 1:00:43Phil: Oh.
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: That sort of thing. But anyway,
- 1:00:48Tad Eggleston: I was a… a benevolent dictator this week and said, I didn't have time to read COPRA because I've got this… this whole C2E2 thing coming up.
- 1:00:58Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait, C2E2 is comics, and we're a comics podcast. So, we're putting Copra on hold, and we're gonna talk about C2E2 until I'm…
- 1:01:09Tad Eggleston: done with all the C2E2 stuff, because… because unlike years past, it's not just, like, oh, I'm going for the weekend, and I'm hoping to meet some cool people, and that sort of thing. I have…
- 1:01:22Tad Eggleston: 4. Count them.
- 1:01:24Phil: Wow.
- 1:01:25Tad Eggleston: Oracle.
- 1:01:26Tad Eggleston: Panels to prepare for, do stuff for.
- 1:01:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm mostly prepared already. Most of them are minimal prep. The part of today has been working with Kelly to get some graphics
- 1:01:40Tad Eggleston: Together, get some slideshow stuff, you know, minimal slideshow stuff together, that sort of thing.
- 1:01:49Tad Eggleston: And I definitely am gonna send out some emails, do, like, some last-minute push to try to really up the cool people talking about comics.
- 1:01:59Tad Eggleston: Numbers, and for that matter, like, the plan is to have… have,
- 1:02:08Tad Eggleston: invitations to hand out to people that I didn't know before. You know, here, hear, Dennis Cowan, come, come be a cool person talking about comics. Hear… hear, whoever.
- 1:02:20Tad Eggleston: But, so, so yeah, it's, like…
- 1:02:28Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna go and not… I mean, you guys should ask questions, this shouldn't just be me monologuing.
- 1:02:35Tyler Johnson: Oh!
- 1:02:37Tad Eggleston: I won my units.
- 1:02:38Phil: So, so…
- 1:02:39Tad Eggleston: Or my thing, so…
- 1:02:40Phil: Cool people asking about comics, that's… that was your guys' first comic podcast that you did together?
- 1:02:46Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, it was… it was… it was… and it kind of fell by the wayside, but cool people talking about comics and stuff started from…
- 1:02:55Tad Eggleston: for a while, we had a quarterly book club that didn't have as much of a purpose, as much as bringing people together. In some ways, cool people talking about comics and stuff was the…
- 1:03:06Tad Eggleston: Was the genesis of… of the… the… Joy, resistance, hope, and survival.
- 1:03:13Phil: Oh… Okay.
- 1:03:15Tad Eggleston: Because, like, the book was… the book was a thing to bring us together, but…
- 1:03:21Tad Eggleston: But really, it was people who loved this medium.
- 1:03:27Tad Eggleston: Having an excuse to talk to each other.
- 1:03:30Tad Eggleston: But… but as a panel, it's… it's… It's more,
- 1:03:37Tad Eggleston: comics-oriented, and I'm actually… well, really quick, let me pull up…
- 1:03:42Tad Eggleston: We'll plug the panel times. Anybody who is going to C2E2 and happens to listen to this before then, let me give specific information on the whens and wheres,
- 1:03:59Tad Eggleston: Because… because I have them.
- 1:04:02Tad Eggleston: And that's just a weird and amazing thing.
- 1:04:06Tad Eggleston: I gotta… I gotta… Things to do. Panels are things to do.
- 1:04:14Phil: It's an event, it's a, you know, it's the very first 22 panels event.
- 1:04:18Tad Eggleston: If you will. Yeah.
- 1:04:22Tyler Johnson: Great.
- 1:04:24Phil: Hopefully, this will spin out a few tie-in miniseries, a few new status quos for you and Tyler, you know, to observe over the…
- 1:04:30Tad Eggleston: certainly wouldn't mind if, if, if this is, this is a, beginning of something bigger…
- 1:04:40Tad Eggleston: For… for… for 22 panels than just the… the… Crap ton of… of…
- 1:04:48Tad Eggleston: Of hours worth of talking that,
- 1:04:51Tad Eggleston: We already do, which, don't get me wrong.
- 1:04:54Tyler Johnson: No, don't say we. What you do. I mean, you know, the order is Tad, and then Tad and Phil, and then I come in.
- 1:05:03Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 1:05:03Tyler Johnson: Very distant third of participants.
- 1:05:06Tad Eggleston: To be fair, when I say we.
- 1:05:09Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep.
- 1:05:09Tad Eggleston: Talking about me, and you, and Phil, and Marcus, and Ted, and…
- 1:05:16Tyler Johnson: all of our, all of our… all of our guys. Sean, and… Yep.
- 1:05:21Tad Eggleston: and Peter, and Matt, and Bell, and Dylan Gilbertson, and,
- 1:05:30Tad Eggleston: there are others that I'm, like, just not coming up with the names right now. I mean, we have a lot of people that contribute to book clubs on it.
- 1:05:38Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 1:05:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:05:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I'm crazy because I'm involved in it all.
- 1:05:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:05:47Tad Eggleston: really is a we.
- 1:05:50Tad Eggleston: It's… it's…
- 1:05:51Tyler Johnson: True.
- 1:05:51Tad Eggleston: But…
- 1:05:55Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: It's why I'm a little bit more comfortable being a medalent dictator,
- 1:06:03Tad Eggleston: Even though… and it took me a while, because, like, it's hard for me not to think about it as your… as your…
- 1:06:09Tad Eggleston: Podcast, because you're the one that had the podcast before, and you're the one…
- 1:06:14Tyler Johnson: Sticked. You still feel that way?
- 1:06:18Tad Eggleston: Not as much, but I find myself sometimes thinking about…
- 1:06:27Tad Eggleston: I find myself sometimes thinking about… I remember…
- 1:06:35Tad Eggleston: the first really deep dive that Pearl Jam did with Rolling Stone.
- 1:06:41Tad Eggleston: Where they admitted that they almost broke up.
- 1:06:46Tad Eggleston: During the no-code time.
- 1:06:48Tad Eggleston: And part of… Part of what… Kept them together, actually… became… Stopping being a…
- 1:07:08Tad Eggleston: stopping… Being a democracy.
- 1:07:14Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:07:16Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, acknowledging that even though he was the last to the band.
- 1:07:24Tad Eggleston: Other than whatever drama they had going.
- 1:07:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:07:33Tad Eggleston: The… Band was Eddie's band.
- 1:07:36Tad Eggleston: Eddie had the most…
- 1:07:40Tad Eggleston: visibility, Eddie had to deal with the most fallout, you know, the other guys could be relatively anonymous, Eddie had, like…
- 1:07:48Tad Eggleston: Hardcore stalkers.
- 1:07:51Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:07:52Phil: You know, I know your cat's popular on this podcast, but I didn't know he had gotten some stalkers by now.
- 1:07:58Tad Eggleston: Oh?
- 1:07:59Tyler Johnson: Whoa!
- 1:08:01Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:08:03Tyler Johnson: You know…
- 1:08:04Tad Eggleston: So, like, it's taken me a while to go, oh, I… I do put in way more effort, I have way more at stake right now, outside of my head. When people think about interacting with 22 panels, they think about interacting with me.
- 1:08:22Tad Eggleston: And therefore, like…
- 1:08:25Tad Eggleston: I do need to occasionally assert myself and say, no, this is what we're doing today, because this is what I can do today, or… Yeah. No, that's not how we do this or that thing.
- 1:08:37Tad Eggleston: You know… .
- 1:08:39Tyler Johnson: So, like, what…
- 1:08:40Tad Eggleston: I mean, I hope I've been kind… I think I've done that second one more with Phil than I have with you, and I hope… I hope I always do it kindly, because I… I never mean to come off as… but every once in a while, when I see something that's not done the way that I'd want to do it, before I can even think about
- 1:08:57Tad Eggleston: how bad it is, it's just like, I would never do that, and just…
- 1:09:03Tyler Johnson: Chill.
- 1:09:03Tad Eggleston: What…
- 1:09:04Tyler Johnson: From my perspective, it was pretty evident right away that you wanted to do more
- 1:09:14Tyler Johnson: more content for the podcast than I would ever have time for.
- 1:09:21Tyler Johnson: Do you know what I mean? And, so, I just… Didn't really mind not…
- 1:09:28Tyler Johnson: taking the reins, you know what I mean? I was like, okay, that's cool, because that's, you know, I just didn't have time for that, so…
- 1:09:37Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:09:37Tad Eggleston: That's how I find it.
- 1:09:38Tyler Johnson: Oh, I saw it, thanks.
- 1:09:40Tad Eggleston: I finally have managed to find my Friday panel, so the first 22 panels will be the road to the Reader, Publisher to distributor to Comic Shop.
- 1:09:54Tad Eggleston: Yes. I have… I have a couple of publishers in C. Spike Trotman of Iron Circus Comics, and Mike Kennedy of Magnetic Comics, to go along with Patrick Brower from
- 1:10:05Tad Eggleston: From, from WrestleHeist fame.
- 1:10:11Tad Eggleston: And, wrestleHeist fame slash, Challengers Con…
- 1:10:18Tad Eggleston: Comics and Conversation, and Taylor Crowell Merker is the… is the distribution… or Director of Operations at Lunar Distribution.
- 1:10:29Tad Eggleston: From there, I actually have 2 on Saturday.
- 1:10:35Tad Eggleston: And… Happily for me.
- 1:10:38Tad Eggleston: There will be time in between them to, I think, run and go see the West Wing panel. Martin Sheen and Dule Hill are doing a West Wing panel. I kind of want to go.
- 1:10:51Tad Eggleston: I haven't even looked at most of the panels, because it's like, I don't know if I'm gonna go to panels that aren't mine this year, because I gotta do my panels, and I'd like to spend some time in Artist Alley.
- 1:11:02Tad Eggleston: but at… Oh, I forgot to give us a room number on that last one, so let's…
- 1:11:10Tad Eggleston: Let's… let's go back to… The road to the Reader is…
- 1:11:15Tad Eggleston: Friday at 1.30 p.m. in room S402A.
- 1:11:22Phil: Yeah, you're gonna need a map to, to match that up too, unless you're, like, an expert navigating your way around McCormick Place.
- 1:11:28Tad Eggleston: I am relatively expert… Okay. …in, like, the C2 area, but also, all of my panels are in 401, 402, or 403, so they're in rooms right next to each other.
- 1:11:41Phil: That's not bad.
- 1:11:41Tad Eggleston: And I know where those rooms are. Nice.
- 1:11:44Tyler Johnson: I've only been there once, but it does… I don't seem to remember, Tad, that you and I had any issues.
- 1:11:49Tad Eggleston: No, not really. Actually, the hardest part is I don't know where the main stage is, and the main stage is where the west wing panel is.
- 1:11:56Phil: Thank you.
- 1:11:59Tad Eggleston: So if I want to go to the West Wing panel, I gotta be able to figure it out, because Saturday, March 28th, at 12.15, I have… I was so much older than
- 1:12:10Tad Eggleston: I'm younger than that now, from indie darlings to best sellers, I'm gonna talk to Jeffrey Brown and Lucy Knisely, a couple of Chicago-area creators that started out doing
- 1:12:20Tad Eggleston: sometimes really awkward autobiomics, and now do kids' books, and have kids, and I'm… it's like, I'm interested to hear that journey, I'm interested to hear if…
- 1:12:32Tad Eggleston: if their kids have seen any of their older stuff, or when they'll be ready for that, I'm interested to hear,
- 1:12:40Tad Eggleston: like… what would the punk making comics in their 20s and working the SPX cake…
- 1:12:47Tad Eggleston: you know, small con circuit, think of the fact that, you know, you have bestsellers for kids now. Like, bestseller, bestsellers. Like… like, Jeffrey's done…
- 1:12:59Tad Eggleston: Done Star Wars and the Hulk.
- 1:13:02Tad Eggleston: For kids. Not, not, not Marvel, I mean, Marvel, Star Wars, and the Hulk, but, but not, like, issues, like, the kids' version. He, he, he wrote, Hulk Teach.
- 1:13:14Phil: Yo.
- 1:13:17Tad Eggleston: So, so I'm looking forward to that.
- 1:13:20Tad Eggleston: The, the, the, the next one that I have on…
- 1:13:24Tad Eggleston: Saturday, and… that one was in 402A,
- 1:13:30Tad Eggleston: The next one I have on Saturday, and 401D at 4.30, I have so much more than Wednesday superheroes. Independent creators provide depth and breadth to the medium. And I'm really, really happy about who I have for this, because I, I, I kind of run the gamut of…
- 1:13:48Tad Eggleston: experience and… Success, because I've got Terry Moore headlining.
- 1:13:58Tad Eggleston: with C-Spike Trotman from Iron Circus again, and Greg Petrie from the Santros Sisters.
- 1:14:04Tyler Johnson: Larry Brooks…
- 1:14:05Tad Eggleston: stall… who has… A book that's been serialized and compila… and… in, anthology books on…
- 1:14:18Tyler Johnson: So he just did a story in Leprecha.
- 1:14:20Tad Eggleston: And he… and he's got a, a, A story in the… the recent…
- 1:14:28Tad Eggleston: What's the publisher on that one? The Leprechaun.
- 1:14:32Tyler Johnson: Oh, my gosh, was it Source Point or something? Yeah.
- 1:14:35Tad Eggleston: the recent SourcePoint press, like… St. Patrick's Day horror anthology, he's got a short story in.
- 1:14:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and then he just did a signing…
- 1:14:47Tyler Johnson: Late last week, that I think went pretty well.
- 1:14:51Tad Eggleston: Well, that's cool, because he's got one at Modern Age on Thursday. He's got one at Chicago Comics on Wednesday. They set up a little tour for themselves.
- 1:15:01Tad Eggleston: And then, Darya Faruhar, who has gone the other route in terms of it being a young indie comic, she's gone more the Lucy Knisley Jeffrey Brown. She's working the tables at small cons, and writing autobiographical and or non-fiction comics, and…
- 1:15:20Tad Eggleston: you know, graduated from the UC, and… and…
- 1:15:24Tad Eggleston: And… is looking at going to law school.
- 1:15:29Tyler Johnson: It's awesome.
- 1:15:29Tad Eggleston: So it just… it feels like a nice, varied… nice, varied group of comic creators. I'm looking forward to hearing them, but I'm also looking forward to… to… to having them talk to each other some, because… because my plan is…
- 1:15:44Tad Eggleston: Like, for the more veteran ones, it'll be, like, tell us something that you wish you'd known
- 1:15:51Tad Eggleston: when you started.
- 1:15:52Tad Eggleston: But for Daria and Larry, I've already told them that, like.
- 1:15:57Tad Eggleston: When it comes to your second question, it's gonna be, you've got 3 of the most successful independent comics creators of the last 40 years in front of you.
- 1:16:07Tad Eggleston: Ask them a question.
- 1:16:10Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:16:10Tad Eggleston: What do you wanna know? What do you wanna… But then we get to…
- 1:16:18Tad Eggleston: the one that I… I still pinch myself every… every time I… I realize that they approved it. On Saturday, or on Sunday afternoon, March 29th, 2.45 to 3.30, in room S403, we have cool people talking about comics.
- 1:16:38Tad Eggleston: So far confirmed is Larry Brooks Stahl, his artist from the Leprechaun book, Eric Olksferry, Mark Pratt, Taylor Crowell, C. Spike Trotman, Mike Kennedy, Daria Faruhar, and Sean Harkelrode. I have other names in my back pocket that just haven't…
- 1:16:57Tad Eggleston: that may be there, I'm gonna be plugging for it, because the idea is I'm gonna get as many people in that room as possible.
- 1:17:06Tad Eggleston: And we're gonna read some comics. I'm even gonna share the… not completely done with the slideshow, but I'm gonna share the slideshow with you guys. We won't necessarily read it all now, cause I know Tyler's ready to go eat, and so am I.
- 1:17:20Tyler Johnson: My tummy's rumbling.
- 1:17:22Tad Eggleston: But I know that you guys will recognize some of these.
- 1:17:28Tad Eggleston: We'll just read them, and then we'll talk about why they're cool.
- 1:17:32Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 1:17:35Phil: Oh, love some Nancy.
- 1:17:39Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:17:40Tad Eggleston: I actually have the peanuts.
- 1:17:42Tad Eggleston: from… This week, The year I was born.
- 1:17:49Phil: That's…
- 1:17:50Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:17:52Tad Eggleston: It's not quite completely lined up with this week, because the year I was born, my birthday was on a Tuesday, and it's a Wednesday this week, but this one in the middle here is…
- 1:18:02Tad Eggleston: The one from the day I was born.
- 1:18:05Tad Eggleston: This one at the end here.
- 1:18:08Tad Eggleston: The sixth one is… The one from 46 years before we'll be reading it.
- 1:18:16Tad Eggleston: at the… at the show, and then the Sunday one from that week is a baseball one, so I had to…
- 1:18:23Tad Eggleston: Had to keep it.
- 1:18:24Tad Eggleston: And then we're gonna do some milestone.
- 1:18:26Tad Eggleston: We're gonna do a fantastic page from a Birds of Prey comic.
- 1:18:30Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:31Tad Eggleston: We're gonna do.
- 1:18:32Phil: I don't seen.
- 1:18:34Tad Eggleston: from Palomino.
- 1:18:37Tad Eggleston: And then some…
- 1:18:38Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:39Tad Eggleston: crisis events. I got a couple things that I might add, and obviously, it really comes down to, will we have time for it all? But if this goes well, I can envision a thing where I make, like, the long, long slideshow, and separate it by numbers, and, like, create a digital wheel to be spun.
- 1:18:59Phil: Oh, that'd be interesting.
- 1:19:00Tad Eggleston: And we do it randomly, rather than with any…
- 1:19:03Tad Eggleston: specific rhyme or reason to do it, because, like, I would love it if this became the panel that I did
- 1:19:13Tad Eggleston: Over and over and over and over and over again, and had it be different every time.
- 1:19:18Tad Eggleston: maybe not even different comics, it'd just wind up being different, because the fans and artists and whatever available at any given con were different, but I would love it to become a 22 Panels thing that, like.
- 1:19:32Tad Eggleston: Any con that led us, we did this panel at.
- 1:19:37Phil: Pretty awesome.
- 1:19:38Tad Eggleston: It was just, okay, who wants to read this part?
- 1:19:42Tyler Johnson: That would be fun.
- 1:19:44Tad Eggleston: So I'm… I'm really hoping it'll work out. I know I'm not the only one that's hoping it'll work out. Almost everybody in comics I've told this about is like.
- 1:19:54Tad Eggleston: You gotta tell me how it goes, because that's…
- 1:19:56Tyler Johnson: It'll be funny.
- 1:19:58Tad Eggleston: It'll be…
- 1:19:58Tyler Johnson: Cool, I hope.
- 1:19:59Tad Eggleston: Well, and I just… like…
- 1:20:02Tad Eggleston: And I don't mind that it's become pop culture cons, like, because, like, there is something nice about the fact that…
- 1:20:12Tad Eggleston: that, comics are now…
- 1:20:18Tad Eggleston: mainstreamed, at least in that, oh, well, I'm really into movies, and being into comics isn't that different from being really into movies. You know what I mean? Yeah. We don't get beat up as often, I guess is what I'm saying.
- 1:20:33Phil: That is good to hear, yeah.
- 1:20:35Tad Eggleston: But… but… I like the idea of in the middle of this big pop culture con event.
- 1:20:42Tad Eggleston: having… 45 minutes that are, like, hardcore…
- 1:20:48Tad Eggleston: Dedicated to comics themselves, and why they're awesome.
- 1:20:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:20:53Tyler Johnson: That is good.
- 1:20:55Tad Eggleston: So I'm hoping it works out.
- 1:20:56Tyler Johnson: That's cool.
- 1:20:57Tad Eggleston: when it works out. Anybody else have anything to say about C2, E2?
- 1:21:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, I did get a hotel room, so I'm not gonna be doing crazy driving. That'll help with the self-care.
- 1:21:07Phil: That's good, good for you, you know?
- 1:21:08Tad Eggleston: And.
- 1:21:09Phil: to hear.
- 1:21:09Tad Eggleston: We'll see about the nerves. I imagine after the first panel, the nerves will start to… start to settle some.
- 1:21:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:21:19Phil: Just don't forget to pinch yourself, you know?
- 1:21:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, oh, God.
- 1:21:23Tad Eggleston: That's.
- 1:21:23Tyler Johnson: It's gonna be one.
- 1:21:24Tad Eggleston: One of my big goals is to just actually enjoy it.
- 1:21:27Tyler Johnson: Will, Kelly be accompanying you?
- 1:21:30Tad Eggleston: Kelly is not coming down. She's not big on the cons, and this is not her spring break week. Next week is her spring break week.
- 1:21:39Phil: That really lined up for you, then.
- 1:21:41Tad Eggleston: Right. Nice. So… So, yeah.
- 1:21:46Tyler Johnson: Cool.
- 1:21:48Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, like, we're gonna spend 3 weeks on this, because by… I don't know when we're gonna record next week, but it's…
- 1:21:56Tad Eggleston: Likely gonna be before…
- 1:22:01Tad Eggleston: I don't want to come home and record, I guess is what I'm saying, so… so…
- 1:22:05Phil: Okay, it'd have to be a morning.
- 1:22:06Tad Eggleston: options for you guys are gonna be Saturday morning before I go to the con, and therefore before…
- 1:22:15Phil: So we're talking, like, 6 a.m? 3 a.m.
- 1:22:17Tad Eggleston: Well, 7 AM will be fine.
- 1:22:18Phil: Okay.
- 1:22:19Tad Eggleston: 10-minute walk from the con.
- 1:22:22Tad Eggleston: open till 10.
- 1:22:23Phil: Okay, okay.
- 1:22:24Tad Eggleston: I mean, normal recording time would work. Okay. But it'd be… it'd be 7 AM…
- 1:22:31Tad Eggleston: like, 8pm or later on Saturday, or 7 a.m. on Sunday is probably what we're looking at.
- 1:22:40Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:22:41Tad Eggleston: But regardless, there will be… I won't have done the Cool People Talking Comics panel.
- 1:22:47Tad Eggleston: And if we do it Saturday morning, I'll have only done one panel.
- 1:22:51Tad Eggleston: So there will be more to talk about, which is why.
- 1:22:54Phil: Nope.
- 1:22:54Tad Eggleston: We will do one more week where we do C2, E2.
- 1:22:58Phil: the aftermath.
- 1:22:59Tad Eggleston: stuff.
- 1:23:00Tad Eggleston: The aftermath, that's a good point. On the selfish side.
- 1:23:03Tad Eggleston: I don't have to worry about doing specific reading for this podcast. And then.
- 1:23:08Phil: There you go.
- 1:23:08Tad Eggleston: back to Copra.
- 1:23:10Phil: Right. That sounds like a good time.
- 1:23:12Tad Eggleston: Hi, Reyna.
- 1:23:13Tyler Johnson: Oh, they said hi, Rena.
- 1:23:15Tad Eggleston: So… Anyway, books I hope, will be spectacular. This is a pretty good week. We got
- 1:23:23Tad Eggleston: Is Ted OK number 2 from Dave Chisholm at Mad Cave? Every time…
- 1:23:28Tyler Johnson: I see that cover of the first one, because it's sitting in my nightstand upstairs, issue one, I… my brain goes, is Tad okay?
- 1:23:37Tad Eggleston: No, seriously, I… if…
- 1:23:39Tad Eggleston: And we've had Dave Chisholm on, and I email with him more, and I need to have him back on again. If I ever manage to see him personally, or I might even ask him to just do it for me and send it. I want one where he draws over the E to make it an A.
- 1:23:54Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:23:54Phil: That'd be… that'd be fun.
- 1:23:55Tyler Johnson: That would be sweet.
- 1:23:56Tyler Johnson: I am looking forward to issue two. Two out of your three are…
- 1:24:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Tyler, we just lost you.
- 1:24:04Phil: -Oh.
- 1:24:07Tad Eggleston: There's your ear…
- 1:24:08Phil: I assumed he was gonna say, ones that…
- 1:24:11Tad Eggleston: Too bad.
- 1:24:11Phil: forward, too.
- 1:24:12Phil: I imagine he wasn't… I imagine there was gonna be positives.
- 1:24:15Tyler Johnson: Sweet.
- 1:24:17Phil: Yep.
- 1:24:20Phil: We still can't hear you.
- 1:24:21Tad Eggleston: How are you?
- 1:24:21Phil: -Oh.
- 1:24:22Phil: -Oh, nope.
- 1:24:23Tad Eggleston: Can't hear you.
- 1:24:26Phil: If this is a bit, it's not funny anymore.
- 1:24:29Phil: Okay, it's maybe a little funny still.
- 1:24:33Phil: It's just a blip! We catch it just a blip, like, one syllable.
- 1:24:38Tad Eggleston: Can you hear me now? No, I can't hear you now.
- 1:24:41Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna keep going.
- 1:24:42Phil: Near us, though.
- 1:24:43Tad Eggleston: Tyler's working on it.
- 1:24:45Tad Eggleston: Is Ted OK? Number 2. Absolute Martian Manhunter, number 10, from Dennis Camp and Javier Rodriguez. Javier Rodriguez will be at C2E2. I'm very much looking forward to seeing him, and meeting him. Also at C2E2 is Chris Condon, which is awesome, because I got Apparel of the Brutal Dark poster.
- 1:25:05Tad Eggleston: when they took it down at the shop, so that's what I'm having him sign this stuff.
- 1:25:09Tyler Johnson: Can you hear me now?
- 1:25:11Tad Eggleston: There you are.
- 1:25:12Tyler Johnson: Okay, so, I could hear you guys the whole time, and what I said is 2 out of your 3 are in my box already at the store, and I also have that peril of, the Brutal Dark poster, and it is awesome. It's hanging up in my shop, but…
- 1:25:27Tad Eggleston: It is totally awesome, which is…
- 1:25:29Tyler Johnson: Next to the Bleeding Hearts one, that one came out the same week.
- 1:25:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, which is why I fully intend that's when I'm gonna have Chris sign for me this year.
- 1:25:37Phil: Fine.
- 1:25:39Tad Eggleston: So yeah, good week in comics, there's some interesting trades, there's some more, you know, we've got Absolute Wonder Woman, we've got Carbon Red Claw.
- 1:25:46Tad Eggleston: We've got Department of Truth.
- 1:25:49Tad Eggleston: Feral.
- 1:25:50Tad Eggleston: Minor Arcana, Miss Truesdale, and The Rise of Man. Oh, yeah, the… there's that… there's that,
- 1:25:56Tad Eggleston: Superman's Spider-Man book?
- 1:25:58Tad Eggleston: Come on, this movie.
- 1:25:59Tyler Johnson: Did you… But you know…
- 1:26:01Tad Eggleston: Actually, really quick, I am pissed off about something.
- 1:26:05Tyler Johnson: Why?
- 1:26:05Tad Eggleston: I have been looking forward to getting Daredevil number 1 on my birthday for, like, 5 months now.
- 1:26:13Phil: -Oh.
- 1:26:15Tyler Johnson: And then boom.
- 1:26:15Phil: got bumped.
- 1:26:16Tad Eggleston: They moved it to April 1st. Which also means that I can't have Stephanie Phillips sign it for me at the con.
- 1:26:23Phil: That's a double whammy. Well, and, talk about an April Fool's, pullover, you know?
- 1:26:28Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:26:29Tad Eggleston: Oh, if it turns out that there's no Daredevil…
- 1:26:35Tyler Johnson: sucks.
- 1:26:36Tad Eggleston: So, Phil, what's your, trade rater?
- 1:26:39Phil: My trade reader pick this week is a little book called The Power Fantasy. This is Volume 3, is coming out, The End of History, by good ol' Kieran Gillen, Casper Wingard, Clayton Cowles, and…
- 1:26:51Tad Eggleston: Cools!
- 1:26:52Phil: polls?
- 1:26:53Phil: It's… that's what I get. So I get an off week outside Nandy Beck Coles, Clayton Coles, and Ryan Hughes, Image Comics. If you are also wa- if you are waiting for this trade, you have more patience than me. This has been one of my favorite series this year, it's absolutely fantastic.
- 1:27:08Phil: Yeah, real great. I can't wait until I imagine the first three volumes are gonna be in one big hardcover, that makes sense to me, so I really hope so, fingers crossed.
- 1:27:17Tad Eggleston: There, I helped you out.
- 1:27:19Tad Eggleston: Phil.
- 1:27:20Phil: Thank you, you know? Honestly?
- 1:27:24Phil: Honestly?
- 1:27:26Phil: It's because of… I don't have, you know, it's the… it's the stage fright where I see, the W, and it looks like Cowell if the E and L were flipped, but it's Coles.
- 1:27:38Phil: You just reframe it, thank you.
- 1:27:39Tad Eggleston: Bye.
- 1:27:40Tyler Johnson: Yeah, alright. Well, I… I'm gonna suggest we get, a roll-in.
- 1:27:48Tad Eggleston: That's your job.
- 1:27:49Phil: We're not… we're not gonna eat dinner together?
- 1:27:51Phil: It's not a…
- 1:27:52Tyler Johnson: Am I going hungry?
- 1:27:53Phil: Hello?
- 1:27:54Tyler Johnson: I'm having leftover pizza.
- 1:27:56Phil: I'm also…
- 1:27:57Tad Eggleston: I'm having new pizza, so… This is… this is where… Frozen pizza.
- 1:28:02Tad Eggleston: I don't know if you've noticed, when you listen to any of the ones I do without you, I don't always tell people when I'm ending it, I just end it. You don't have to talk to us, you can say the words.
- 1:28:13Tyler Johnson: Right, but I just like… I like full transparency, right? Just like… There we go.
- 1:28:19Tad Eggleston: I don't want full transparency, I don't, like, you keep your clothes on, man.
- 1:28:24Tyler Johnson: I keep them.
- 1:28:25Tad Eggleston: on. I don't want to see through them.
- 1:28:27Tyler Johnson: Am I wrecking the…
- 1:28:29Tad Eggleston: That the beard is there?
- 1:28:31Phil: I…
- 1:28:31Tad Eggleston: is…
- 1:28:32Tyler Johnson: Will?
- 1:28:32Phil: So that's what he means by he's the beard of comics.
- 1:28:35Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:28:36Phil: I will also say, I am actually really happy to find out that we are all about to eat pizza. Pepperoni? Pepperoni?
- 1:28:42Tyler Johnson: Yeah, actually. Pepperoni? Probably.
- 1:28:44Phil: Probably. Oh! Look at that.
- 1:28:46Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 1:28:47Tyler Johnson: Alright guys, this has been fun, and we'll catch you guys after the next page. See ya!
- 1:28:56Phil: Pepperoni.
