- 0:00Welcome to Sober Talk. I'm Dennis and I've lived
- 0:03experience of alcohol. If you or anyone you know is
- 0:06struggling with alcohol, please call Alcoholics Anonymous on
- 0:101300 double 22222 or check out their website on aa.org dot a U
- 0:19I'll just run through the preamble of Alcoholics
- 0:21Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous is a
- 0:24fellowship of men and women. We share their experience,
- 0:27strengthen up with each other. They must solve their problems
- 0:31and help others to recover from alcoholism.
- 0:34The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop
- 0:37drinking. There are no Jews of Feast for A
- 0:39membership. We are self supporting through
- 0:41our own contributions. A is not allied with any sect,
- 0:45denomination, politics, organization or institution.
- 0:49Does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses or
- 0:53oppose any causes. Our primary purpose is stairs
- 0:56open up. Other Alcoholics achieve
- 0:58sobriety. And we've got arguing with this
- 1:02and Paula and Sharon, my system, it's it's the Sharon's been
- 1:07having 20 years up and just in the evenings itself and.
- 1:12Adrian, I'm an alcoholic. Three years so.
- 1:14But they were sending for Serenity Thursday.
- 1:16Thank you. I agree.
- 1:18I'm an alcoholic and sobriety tonight, the 28th of July. 2018
- 1:26and my Home group is Hilly Beach, 12 Promises and Sunday
- 1:30night Exeter. Thank you.
- 1:32Paul I. My name is Sharon.
- 1:34I'm an alcoholic. I've got nearly three years up
- 1:37in surprise and line. I'm group is pulled out the
- 1:40right. You know how it works,
- 1:45preliminary, a little bit of chapter which we go in an all
- 1:50meeting away, I think I agree. Portion of Chapter 5.
- 1:54How it works. Rarely have we seen it first
- 1:56failing to sorry, find out, but in here they've got very people
- 2:00you cannot hold or free to give themselves to be strictly
- 2:03further you need no matter what. They were constitutionally
- 2:05incapable of being honest with themselves.
- 2:07They are unfortunates. They are not at fault.
- 2:09They seem to have been born that way.
- 2:11They are naturally incapable of grassing and developing.
- 2:14A matter of English demands rigorous honesty.
- 2:17The answers are both an average. There are those, too, who suffer
- 2:20from grave emotional and mental disorders.
- 2:23Many of them do recover if they had the capacity.
- 2:25To be honest, our story is closed in a general way.
- 2:28What we used to be like, what happened and what we are like
- 2:31now. If you decided you want what we
- 2:32have and are willing to go to any lakes to get it and you were
- 2:36ready to take certain steps and some of these we balked.
- 2:39We thought we could find it easier to solve the way, but we
- 2:41could not with all the osmosis of our command.
- 2:44You could be furious Sarah. From the very start, some of us
- 2:47have tried the whole where all that is.
- 2:49And it was always meal until we let go.
- 2:51Absolutely remember that we dealt with alcohol.
- 2:53Cunning, baffling, powerful, without help is too much for us.
- 2:57There is one who has all power. That one is God.
- 3:00May you find it now I believe that the bell is nothing.
- 3:03We stood at the turning point. We are seeing protection in care
- 3:06with complete abandon. Here in the steps we told we
- 3:08suggested as a program of recovery.
- 3:11One we will powers over alcohol that had a lot of it become
- 3:15unmanageable. And to believe that a pal
- 3:19greater than ourselves could restore us the sentence.
- 3:22Right. Right.
- 3:23We were sitting down to turn out well, and a large out of the
- 3:26care of God is under study. Could you tell the right someone
- 3:30fight it's. His hair and four made a certain
- 3:34feel. The small inventory of ourselves
- 3:365 Go to ourselves and to another human being.
- 3:39Exactly how long? Six.
- 3:41We're entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of
- 3:44character. Then humbly asked him to remove
- 3:47our show company. It may rest of all persons we've
- 3:49helped and became willing to make amends to the law.
- 3:52Nine. We made the recommends to such
- 3:54people. Where are the possible except
- 3:55for him to do so with injure them or others 10?
- 3:58Continue to take a first door inventory and where we were
- 4:01wrong promptly 11 sought for a prayer and meditation to improve
- 4:05our conscious compact with God as we understood Him, playing
- 4:08only for knowledge of His will for us, and with all to carry
- 4:10that out well. Having had a spiritual awakening
- 4:13as the result of these steps, we try to carry this message to
- 4:16Alcoholics and practice these principles in all our affairs.
- 4:19Many of us explained what an order.
- 4:21I can't go through it. Do not be discouraged.
- 4:23No one of others has been able to maintain anything like
- 4:25perfect adherence to these principles.
- 4:27We're not states. The point is that we are willing
- 4:29to grow along spiritual lines. Good.
- 4:31The principals we are set down, the guides to progress we claim
- 4:34spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection.
- 4:37Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the
- 4:39angle Stick, and our personal adventures before and after make
- 4:42clear three cousins ideas. A that we were alcoholic and
- 4:46could not manage our own lives. B the old emotional car could
- 4:50have relieved our alcoholism. C That a God could handle it if
- 4:54it were. Thank you.
- 4:56Right. Yeah, that was well done.
- 5:02Yes. Hi, I'm Paul, no one alcoholic.
- 5:08So I got today through the fellowship of A A and the loving
- 5:11God of my understanding and oh God, who thought I'd be saying
- 5:15that five years ago, nearly five years ago, God drank for 33
- 5:20years. And I come in the rooms at 50
- 5:23and Oh my God, what a different life a A has given me.
- 5:29I did. Oh yeah, I did.
- 5:31I never thought I had a drinking problem and an alcoholic was
- 5:34definitely out of the question. I I just thought I drank too
- 5:37much. I'd drink, I'd drink too much.
- 5:41All my problems that oh, my life, it it just turned shit in
- 5:48the end. Everything, my whole, my whole
- 5:50world just fell apart and. I just thought it was everyone
- 5:53else's fault and I knew. I always knew I was different.
- 5:56I I knew I was. I always knew I was different.
- 5:58But the 33 years did not want to I connect with alcohol.
- 6:03I I could not connect dogs. I couldn't put two and two
- 6:06together. I I I always thought six.
- 6:08I couldn't absolutely and I'll see encounters.
- 6:13But I believe now from what I'm learning in my short time of in
- 6:17a A. I was born an alcoholic God.
- 6:21I was born a thief, a liar and sheep, a manipulative person.
- 6:26I didn't feel right from the word growing up.
- 6:30I I didn't feel connected to my family.
- 6:33I didn't fit in. I had so much fear, how much
- 6:37anxiety, but I didn't know what that that's what it was back
- 6:40then, you know? And oh God, yeah, it's
- 6:44frightening my family. I didn't have any friends.
- 6:47I was, I was just, I didn't fit in with anyone.
- 6:51I, you know, my parents, you know, the friends, even, you
- 6:55know, people at school, kids at school, I just didn't fit in in
- 6:58their groups. And you know, it wasn't the
- 7:00pretty one. I was red, little red hair, you
- 7:04know, frickly skinny little thing like the little red doll.
- 7:06And I was, you know, I was always fear and I never
- 7:09understood anything when the teachers were talking.
- 7:12And now I know it was just that fear of I never was going to
- 7:16understand what they were, what they were going to say.
- 7:19You know, I'd like to all my all my primary school and and the
- 7:23same with high school too. And I never understood what the
- 7:26teachers were staying and it's now I just never never sit it in
- 7:30and I didn't feel good enough. I didn't feel pretty.
- 7:32I felt ugly and fat and I always thought I was really dumb and
- 7:36stupid. And I couldn't wait to get out
- 7:39of school. So once I get out of school and
- 7:41and get out of home and get a job and get a car, if I get all
- 7:45that, get out there in life, you know when people will let me
- 7:49know. I have friends and I'll be
- 7:50pretty. And look, I did all that and
- 7:54we've down at home got a job and everything 1617 and then.
- 8:00And I picked up that drink and Oh my God did I love it.
- 8:03I loved I absolutely loved alcohol.
- 8:06I loved the taste. I loved the effect was like
- 8:08whoa, here I come. I thought I was I thought I was
- 8:11the queen and she. But I thought I was sexy.
- 8:13I thought I was gorgeous. All the boys are gonna love me.
- 8:16All the girls are gonna love me. Everyone's gonna love me and and
- 8:20you know and I hear in the rooms and.
- 8:26People telling their story, sharing their stories.
- 8:29And a few members say that they look in the mirror and and they
- 8:34just love themselves and it's gone.
- 8:35Oh my God, that was me. That was me.
- 8:37Before I'd go out, I'd always look in the mirror.
- 8:40I don't always, you know, I didn't have a drink before I'd
- 8:42go out anywhere. It's just what I did and I look
- 8:45in the mirror and I thought it's love myself and I thought I was
- 8:48pretty. I was gorgeous.
- 8:50Like I said, you know and. Oh, it's always that
- 8:53anticipation that I am. I always look forward to getting
- 8:57a drink, to having a drink, You know, it's so excited.
- 8:59And I'll get my the glass really, in the morning, my straw
- 9:02in it, you know, the the Walker ready.
- 9:05I I always knew, you know, I was going to.
- 9:07I was coming home to drink. And yeah, I I drank the black, I
- 9:13drank. Well, I started drinking too.
- 9:17Yeah, I I I was having blackouts and I, you know, I just thought
- 9:21that's what that's what everyone did.
- 9:22Everyone would be telling me what I was doing.
- 9:25You know, the the next day. I just, I just absolutely love
- 9:29alcohol. And I and I'm married to
- 9:31Alcoholics, you know. I knew I was going to always
- 9:34find the man of my dreams, you know, in a pub, you know?
- 9:39Now I know there was I there was nothing.
- 9:41I had no dignity. There was nothing ladylike about
- 9:44me. I loved the palms.
- 9:45I loved that. I just love the.
- 9:47And I just feel that whether it comes to alcohol, you know, the
- 9:50front bar, the swearing, just every just everything get bad.
- 9:55I loved it and you know and I just thought everyone loved me
- 9:58too. And I I didn't know.
- 10:02I didn't go to jail. I didn't have any cops off to
- 10:05me. I didn't drink and drive.
- 10:07You know, none of that. What I hear in there, you know,
- 10:10I, I, I tried to walk down and I was always on when I say, you
- 10:15know, just dealing. And I was stealing from as young
- 10:18as I can remember, you know, figure it through my money, you
- 10:22know, from a person just I just stole right up until the day I
- 10:25was 50, you know, And I just thought, well, I didn't think
- 10:28nothing of it, you know. And then I was always sort of
- 10:31myself out with them. I always had to look good.
- 10:34I always had to look good. The best clothes, the best of
- 10:38everything, the best jewelry, the best hairstyle.
- 10:41You know, on the outside, on the outside I am.
- 10:45I look perfect, the perfect home.
- 10:48But now on the inside, I was, I was.
- 10:51I was filling everything up and I kind of feel the inside.
- 10:56I had no idea I was. I was so lonely.
- 11:00I was so scared and I was just so frightened and and just that
- 11:05fear and anxiety and I I had no idea that the alcohol was taking
- 11:10that away from me. All I knew I just.
- 11:12I just loved drinking and like I said I was always craving it and
- 11:15just that anticipation for a drink.
- 11:19But as I know what I'm learning now, it just progressed and.
- 11:26And my my life is, my life is getting worse.
- 11:29I was just going down, down, down, down.
- 11:32And you know, and and it wasn't my problem, you know, to be.
- 11:37I didn't have any any problems. It was it was always everyone
- 11:40else. I'd put the finger.
- 11:41I'd blame everyone else. I'd scream at everyone else.
- 11:44To me, I had no problems. It was everyone else.
- 11:47And you know when I come in at 50.
- 11:53You know, like I'd I'd lost my marriage my second marriage and
- 11:57I'd lost my house and I'd come into a a because I I knew I knew
- 12:04where I knew where to come. I said I wasn't an alcoholic and
- 12:09I I didn't have a drinking problem.
- 12:12I just drank too much and I wanted a A to mine called my
- 12:15poor little skull away I was I was in debt you know I wanted a
- 12:18A to and I think my son too. My son was 21 when I come in
- 12:22and. Yeah my son he he he was
- 12:27drinking and drugging and I wanted a A to fix my son.
- 12:29I wanted A to give me a job you know I fix my get a my car off
- 12:33Get Me Out of oh just just fix my life just fix my life as
- 12:39well. If you know if that was all six
- 12:41I would be like hey and just but I knew but I knew something was
- 12:44wrong. I knew I was a little bit
- 12:45different and and when I'd come in I'd come in to a a I was, I
- 12:49was like a little. I was so scared and terrified
- 12:52and fraud and I I come in like I was that little girl, you know
- 12:5533 years ago I had yeah. I had no idea I was an
- 13:01alcoholic. You know and look I I don't
- 13:03normally speak too long because I don't have you know I don't
- 13:07have a a big big recovery story but look at a eights has given
- 13:12me a new life. I I didn't understand anything
- 13:15when I come in. I I I I wouldn't like you people
- 13:19you know you you you didn't understand me.
- 13:21You know I I you know I didn't fit in in the outside world and
- 13:26I didn't fit in the a A I just I didn't know where I belong.
- 13:29But I just I just I just had to keep coming back because he got
- 13:33he got me at my fault and I had nowhere else to go other better.
- 13:36I was just staying. I'm in my drinking and drugging
- 13:39son. I just keep coming to meetings
- 13:42and. Oh look, you know I didn't get a
- 13:47a, a, a got me, you know, I just had to keep coming back.
- 13:52You know meeting after meeting every night.
- 13:55Yeah. It's just because I'm a very
- 13:58very slow learner and and I and I and I don't pick things up
- 14:01very quickly and and like the previous speaker make said it's
- 14:04a that repetitive that repetitive just.
- 14:07People sharing, people talking. They're getting up talking,
- 14:10especially the old, the old, the old time is because then they've
- 14:14been where I've been and they kept sharing, sharing, sharing
- 14:17their story. That and what I was getting.
- 14:19They were telling me about me. They were telling me about me.
- 14:22And people bit, it was like, Oh my God, yeah, that's how I
- 14:27thought and that that's how I felt.
- 14:30You know, I I had. I had no no idea.
- 14:36You know my feelings and and my thinking I I had no idea.
- 14:41You know if that's an affection in the mind is that you know the
- 14:45days that sit in the minds you know and and I'm gonna be I'm
- 14:55gonna be starting out there that's I don't know what to say
- 14:57oh that's that's. All right, Paula.
- 14:59Yeah, no worries. Just finish up and then, you
- 15:03know, you've all done really well.

- 15:08Honestly. I think I I really appreciate it
- 15:11all, Shannon. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:15But look, yeah, I I it's give it's giving me a new life.
- 15:18I'm I'm not that foul mouth that that extruder that you know that
- 15:26I'm. I'm not that person I was when I
- 15:28was drinking, you know? Yeah, I'm, I'm quiet.
- 15:32You know when I was giving me, you know, I lost.
- 15:35I lost my job after 33 years of stealing, you know, because in
- 15:40my, my first year, my first year it was, it didn't get.
- 15:44I feel like my I was getting worse.
- 15:46I was getting worse, you know, I said I wasn't, wasn't giving me
- 15:50money or I was just fighting for my car, you know?
- 15:54I had no no idea what to, what to expect, you know?
- 16:00I just kept coming to meetings and it's just yeah just just
- 16:06surrounded by so much love it and and and you know people get
- 16:12me people understand me and then yeah yeah it's it's I I found my
- 16:18tribe I found my tribe people like me when you know with that
- 16:23you know that that the thing that that that sits in the mind
- 16:26is that thinking it's it's between the head and.
- 16:30And you know I feel I feel like it's relieved and and I'm
- 16:37grateful that I'm that I'm an alcoholic and I and I know
- 16:40what's wrong with me. And I come to these rooms to
- 16:45treat my alcoholism and and to learning, learning to live,
- 16:50learning to live on the outside and and and living, you know
- 16:53with this between my head and and my feelings and.
- 17:05Well, if if she wants the chef, not.
