- 0:29Speaker 1: the weekend or whenever you are listening to this. Then
- 0:32Speaker 1: I share with you my highlights of the week, my
- 0:35Speaker 1: content pics, and finish things off by answering a listener question.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I would love to answer your question on the show.
- 0:44Speaker 1: To submit a question to be featured here on Hurdle,
- 0:48Speaker 1: hear your voice in the feed, you can do it
- 0:51Speaker 1: click on over to the show notes. In there, there
- 0:54Speaker 1: is a link where you can leave me a voicemail.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Super easy, peasy, and spoiler, nothing is off limits today. Wow,
- 1:04Speaker 1: three hundred and sixty five days. I feel like that's
- 1:06Speaker 1: the thing that we've been reading about right. This week
- 1:08Speaker 1: marks the one year timeline of us being officially quote
- 1:13Speaker 1: unquote in a pandemic, and I have, man, I've been
- 1:19Speaker 1: thinking a lot about this. I've been thinking about the
- 1:22Speaker 1: last year, what I've learned, how I have changed, how
- 1:26Speaker 1: I have grown, And for five Minute Friday Day, I
- 1:28Speaker 1: want to share with you a few of my takeaways,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I would argue that this year was, despite being completely unexpected,
- 1:41Speaker 1: something that everyone needed. And when I say that, I
- 1:45Speaker 1: will not I'm not downplaying, of course, the tragedy that
- 1:49Speaker 1: has happened in our country and across the world. Like
- 1:52Speaker 1: the amount of loss it is, it's heartbreaking. Right our
- 1:58Speaker 1: lives will ever be what they were before the coronavirus pandemic,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and in my eyes, for some reasons, we are better
- 2:10Speaker 1: for it. When I say that, I say that because
- 2:15Speaker 1: challenge helps us grow, and adversity helps us grow. And
- 2:19Speaker 1: although it's fun and good and wonderful when the great
- 2:24Speaker 1: things happen in our lives, it's the hurdle moments and
- 2:26Speaker 1: the hurdles that really teach us something.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So with that said, I'm going to dive into a
- 2:33Speaker 1: few of the lessons that I've learned over the past year.
- 2:35Speaker 1: The first lesson is that it starts with you. Now.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Before the pandemic, I know I can definitely raise my
- 2:42Speaker 1: hand about this, it was so easy for us to
- 2:44Speaker 1: just run from things, right, and not just physically, although
- 2:48Speaker 1: I certainly did my fair share of that, but like
- 2:50Speaker 1: frequently traveling, making regular plans, spending long hours in the office,
- 2:56Speaker 1: this like hustle culture that has been like praised for
- 3:00Speaker 1: the last few years. So once the world shut down,
- 3:04Speaker 1: we were all forced to just sit with ourselves. And
- 3:08Speaker 1: for some many maybe they hadn't done that before, right,
- 3:15Speaker 1: And so the past year gave us the opportunity, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: I use that word very strategically, it gave us the
- 3:21Speaker 1: opportunity to get good being on our own. And it
- 3:25Speaker 1: doesn't matter if you spent the past year with your family,
- 3:28Speaker 1: if you spent it alone, if you spent it in
- 3:30Speaker 1: a four hundred square foot apartment, if you spent it
- 3:33Speaker 1: like on the beach in Tulum, like wherever you spent
- 3:36Speaker 1: the past year, without a doubt, you had the opportunity
- 3:40Speaker 1: to get better with just you and yourself because a
- 3:44Speaker 1: lot of the distractions were removed. I will be the
- 3:48Speaker 1: first person to tell you that that extra time alone,
- 3:51Speaker 1: that extra time sitting with yourself, can be really difficult, right,
- 3:56Speaker 1: It can feel really uncomfortable and really just not ideal.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But again with this lesson that it starts with you.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You have to get good at being you on your
- 4:06Speaker 1: own as you are, or working on who it is
- 4:10Speaker 1: that you are, before you can truly show up for
- 4:13Speaker 1: other people in the greatest, most beautiful capacity. So I
- 4:17Speaker 1: encourage you. I know so many of us have put
- 4:20Speaker 1: in this work over the past year, but keep doing it.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Don't let the lessons and the progress and the things
- 4:29Speaker 1: that you have done over the past year that have
- 4:31Speaker 1: empowered you to be a better you go by the wayside.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Once we kind of get back into the quote unquote
- 4:37Speaker 1: normal or more normal swing of things, the next lesson kindness. First,
- 4:46Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, we were all going through the same thing,
- 4:51Speaker 1: so it was easy to understand that the people that
- 4:53Speaker 1: we may be interacting with on a zoom call could
- 4:56Speaker 1: be dealing with an insurmountable amount of anxiety. Right this year,
- 5:01Speaker 1: kindness became super important currency for a lot of people
- 5:05Speaker 1: who may not have prioritized it before. For me, doing
- 5:09Speaker 1: good being kind two of my biggest values to things
- 5:13Speaker 1: that are super important to me. Living my life with
- 5:16Speaker 1: the understanding that I don't necessarily know what is going
- 5:19Speaker 1: on with other people, even though in the last year,
- 5:21Speaker 1: again I may have understood it a little bit better.
- 5:24Speaker 1: But I will say this, this year, it felt like
- 5:27Speaker 1: we all received this kindness a little bit more regularly.
- 5:30Speaker 1: We doled it out to each other a little bit
- 5:32Speaker 1: more freely, and I would encourage you to continue doing
- 5:36Speaker 1: that going forward. My next lesson, You've got to be flexible.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Wonderful things come from the pivot, and I'm sure that
- 5:45Speaker 1: you can relate. Last March, I was frightened. I've talked
- 5:49Speaker 1: about this on the show before, but I went through
- 5:51Speaker 1: a phase where I felt a little bit paralyzed by
- 5:54Speaker 1: the fact that I had rarely recorded an episode of
- 5:57Speaker 1: Hurdle remotely going in to Mark twenty twenty, and so
- 6:02Speaker 1: to have to learn a new skill to figure out
- 6:04Speaker 1: how to make this product from home, to figure out
- 6:07Speaker 1: how to make this as easy as possible for my guests,
- 6:10Speaker 1: to just make this all happen. I was frightened, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: I learned in this process the importance of flexibility. We
- 6:19Speaker 1: have to trust that whatever life steers us away from,
- 6:22Speaker 1: whatever is not happening in our lives, life is happening
- 6:26Speaker 1: for us, not to us. So even though you know
- 6:30Speaker 1: things might not be playing out as we had hoped,
- 6:33Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that something good can't be coming down
- 6:37Speaker 1: the pipe. That's exactly what I talked about in last
- 6:40Speaker 1: week's episode of Five Minute Friday and the last lesson
- 6:44Speaker 1: I want to share with you today the most important
- 6:47Speaker 1: things in life, they're not things, you know. A highlight
- 6:51Speaker 1: for me was really to get more time with my family.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And I say that in a way that I wasn't
- 6:56Speaker 1: getting to physically spend much time with them, but I
- 7:00Speaker 1: started I think from I think from March until like,
- 7:03Speaker 1: who knows, maybe August, there wasn't a day that went
- 7:06Speaker 1: by that I didn't speak to both of my parents.
- 7:08Speaker 1: When I think about pre pandemic life like that was
- 7:10Speaker 1: certainly not a sentence in my vocabulary. And what was
- 7:13Speaker 1: really special was because we were all hanging out at
- 7:17Speaker 1: home for the most part, we were on FaceTime, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: we were connecting, and we were having conversations that we
- 7:22Speaker 1: hadn't had in a long time, and just getting to
- 7:25Speaker 1: really embrace this time with each other and in a
- 7:29Speaker 1: life where oftentimes you know, we're chasing deals or a
- 7:32Speaker 1: money or a certain job title or what have you like.
- 7:36Speaker 1: All of those things they come and go. But your relationships,
- 7:40Speaker 1: those the right ones, They are with you for a lifetime.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So value these relationships, value your values, value the intangible
- 7:53Speaker 1: things that bring joy to your life, because those are
- 7:56Speaker 1: the things that really matter. My prompt for you this week.
- 8:01Speaker 1: What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned
- 8:06Speaker 1: in three hundred and sixty five days of a pandemic? Again,
- 8:08Speaker 1: what is one of the biggest lessons that you have
- 8:11Speaker 1: learned in three hundred and sixty five days of a pandemic?
- 8:14Speaker 1: I would love, actually for this one. Tag me on Instagram.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Let me know where you're at. You don't need to
- 8:19Speaker 1: talk to the camera. Not going to force that here.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I just encourage you. Write a little something, shoot me
- 8:24Speaker 1: a DM keep me in the loop. I'm curious. Highlights
- 8:28Speaker 1: of the week. Links to all of this can be
- 8:30Speaker 1: found in the show notes. First up, listen Sunday the
- 8:33Speaker 1: Bye Miguel and Taney. I cannot stop listening to this song.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It is my jam of the week. I'm calling it
- 8:38Speaker 1: right now. It's the song of the summer. You are
- 8:42Speaker 1: welcome watch one of these fifty best comedies on Netflix
- 8:46Speaker 1: right now. Vulture released a really great list of funny movies.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I just created your to do list for this weekend.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You are welcome. On that to do list, you can
- 8:56Speaker 1: add another one of my highlights for the week, which
- 8:59Speaker 1: is the Big Eat documentary Biggie. I Got a Story
- 9:01Speaker 1: to Tell. I checked that out last weekend with a
- 9:03Speaker 1: friend of mine. I definitely didn't know a lot of
- 9:06Speaker 1: the history behind Notorious Big. I also didn't even know
- 9:09Speaker 1: where his name came from, so I found that one
- 9:12Speaker 1: super interesting. Subscribe the DIP Newsletter. I feel like I've
- 9:16Speaker 1: mentioned the DIP on the show before, but an old
- 9:18Speaker 1: colleague of mine, Lindsay Mannering, she launched the DIP last
- 9:21Speaker 1: year with her good friend and fellow Bustle alum Kate Ward.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's a subscription based website for TV's biggest fans. I'm
- 9:29Speaker 1: putting air quotes around this, which doesn't help because you
- 9:31Speaker 1: cannot see me. But I have really been loving their
- 9:34Speaker 1: newsletter lately, especially talking about all of the things about
- 9:38Speaker 1: the royals. So definitely get into that. And last, but
- 9:42Speaker 1: not least, obsessing over I've mean getting some questions about
- 9:45Speaker 1: these in the DMS. The Puma Deviate Nitro. It is
- 9:48Speaker 1: the new carbon plated sneaker from Puma as a part
- 9:52Speaker 1: of the relaunch of all of their running sneakers. They've
- 9:55Speaker 1: got five new styles. The Deviate Nitro. It's got their
- 9:57Speaker 1: new nitro foam in the soul. I really like it.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It's got like the goldilocks amount of give and coziness.
- 10:05Speaker 1: They are designed for neutral runners, and unlike other carbon
- 10:09Speaker 1: plated sneakers, these ones are built to last for longer.
- 10:12Speaker 1: So we're talking you're gonna get at least two hundred
- 10:14Speaker 1: and fifty good miles out of these. Next up our
- 10:17Speaker 1: listener question from Haley.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, this is Haley. Thank you so much for
- 10:23Speaker 2: all you do for the hurdle community and how honest
- 10:27Speaker 2: you are about your running journey and the ups and downs.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'm curious if you could take us back to when
- 10:34Speaker 2: you decided to run your first marathon. As someone who's
- 10:38Speaker 2: a runner but has done half marathons and never taken
- 10:42Speaker 2: on the full marathon and is maybe downright terrified but
- 10:48Speaker 2: looking for a challenge, I wonder what advice you would offer.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Thanks again, ooh good, good one here. Hey, I would
- 10:55Speaker 1: say that my biggest piece of advice for aspiring marathoners
- 10:58Speaker 1: is just to believe in yourself that you are capable.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You know, before my first marathon, I certainly never thought
- 11:04Speaker 1: that I would be able to run a full and
- 11:06Speaker 1: I think it's one of those things that that's what
- 11:08Speaker 1: the training program is for, right, That's what the training
- 11:11Speaker 1: plan does for you. It helps you get to a
- 11:13Speaker 1: point where you believe in yourself that you can start
- 11:16Speaker 1: to visualize yourself going beyond that half marathon at thirteen
- 11:20Speaker 1: point one miles and going longer, staying in it for longer,
- 11:25Speaker 1: so believe that you can do it. Piece of advice
- 11:28Speaker 1: number two, and of course, follow a smart training plan.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So if you aspire to run a marathon, the last
- 11:34Speaker 1: thing that you should be doing is just waking up
- 11:36Speaker 1: one morning, rolling out of bed and amy to go
- 11:38Speaker 1: out there and run twenty six point two miles. Instead,
- 11:41Speaker 1: follow a smart training program. Talk to an expert, perhaps
- 11:45Speaker 1: a run coach or a trainer that can help guide
- 11:48Speaker 1: you through your process, giving you a suggestion of how
- 11:52Speaker 1: to level up. Of course, there are tons of different
- 11:54Speaker 1: great running programs that you can find online, whether it
- 11:57Speaker 1: be a marathon training program through Nike Running Club or
- 12:01Speaker 1: something on runners World. But make sure again you are
- 12:04Speaker 1: following a training program, you are doing it smart, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: you're staving off injury in the process by not ramping
- 12:09Speaker 1: up too fast. That is it for this week. If
- 12:12Speaker 1: you haven't checked out Megan Roop's episode from Monday, Founder
- 12:16Speaker 1: of the School Society or Calling quickly on the five
- 12:19Speaker 1: different types of runs to add to your routine. With
- 12:21Speaker 1: this week's hurdle moment, I highly encourage you to give
- 12:24Speaker 1: them both a listen. Make sure you are subscribed to
- 12:27Speaker 1: the weekly Hurdle newsletter like to do. That is in
- 12:30Speaker 1: the show notes, as well as if you want to
- 12:33Speaker 1: join in on next month's book club, we are going
- 12:35Speaker 1: to be reading the Art of Gathering. Book link and
- 12:38Speaker 1: book club link to sign up both in the show notes.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
